Stamford in Bloom Stamford in Bloom was judged one sweltering hot day in July, and the town was looking simply stunning, including many ‘planted’ chairs. Walking around town has been a complete revelation these last few months, with so many public areas given so much TLC – one I have noticed particularly is the flower bed at the entrance to the bus station. The individual without whom this would never have happened is Ann Ellis, the closest thing to a horticultural dynamo ever created, and she deserves huge credit (and probably a break). She is keen now to convince people that this is going to be an on-going effort year after year, so please show her your support by emailing her at stamford18bloom@gmail.com with suggestions for what to do new next year (apart from more rain, which is not under her control).

FASHIONABLY FIT! THANKS Equilibrium Gym owners Simon, Dan and Jamie and Personal Trainer Tom agreed to model for me to highlight the launch of their new premises. Huge thanks to them all! The ethos at their gym is very much on personal attention, with training programmes tailored to the individual, based on working at the member’s own pace and aiming towards individual goals. In designing the stylish new facility to the highest possible standard, Equilibrium worked closely with Grantham-based designer David Lyon at Shift Branding & Design (madebyshift.co.uk). The result looks amazing and is highly functional, with smart changing rooms. The gym, which is very much growing by word of mouth, focuses on personal training but also offers a range of classes. You can find it at Unit 19, Springfield Business Park, Caunt Road, Grantham, Lincs NG31 7FZ. CLOSET THOUGHTS T
If you’re contemplating changing your kitchen or rethinking your storage spaces, don’t forget to spare a thought for the type of material they are made from. To ensure long-term loveliness from your coiffured culinary spaces (and let’s face it, we all want that!) the trick is to use high density materials which wear well and won’t warp, move or discolour.
here is so much up for consideration when you are thinking about your new kitchen design. One of the fundamental decisions is what materials to opt for,” explains Alan Ramm from Bakehouse Kitchens. “Always make sure the wood or materials chosen for your kitchen cabinetry are high pressurised which means they will be much more robust to everyday moisture and this will prevent warping and bubbling in the longer term.” Another important consideration is the depth from front to back of your cupboards as there’s nothing more frustrating than not being able to fit your favourite plates in to a new cupboard. “Make sure you can fit your pizza plates in before you commit to buy!” advises Alan.
walnuts which are two very hard woods. Tulip wood is also great to use for painted cabinets doors as it can be more economical.” In addition to being practical, it is very important to get the look of the design right in order to give a kitchen the Bakehouse wow factor. “It is really important to get the proportions right, particularly with the architectural detailing. So, for example, the outer frames of the cupboards want to be sympathetic to the margins on the door.”
“Also think about the thickness of the carcass of your cabinets - these vary in size - often from about 16mm to 22mm. If you are planning to store something heavy, there’s no point in having a flimsy shelf installed that will sag in no time. In addition, think about the height of the shelves and cupboards to optimise them for your size and use. At Bakehouse Kitchens all these details are thought about and included in the design process to ensure that your space is uniquely created to complement you and your lifestyle.”
“We use a mix of traditional British handmade and contemporary German kitchens in combination with our workshop in Essendine where all the bespoke finishing is done. Our skilled team of designers and craftsmen will work to bring your vision to life, showcasing the best materials, appliances and use of space to get the kitchen you desire. With highly considered design, we are committed to treating each project as if it were our own kitchen, challenging the space and perfecting the finer details to make your dream a reality. To this end, we also create complementary dining tables, sideboards and any other bespoke items of furniture you require. We can also create reveals and routed out spaces to show off any special items you want to have on display.”
“I like to colour code the carcasses or add a flip reverse on colour using a solid timber dovetail drawer box in the same type of wood for the carcass as for the doors. We work with all kinds of materials but I love the richness of oaks and
“Our work surfaces are bespoke too and we can incorporate S boxes (which pop out of the surface to reveal ipad holders/chargers/sockets etc) and other elements to your own specification. A popular addition is the integral drinks trough
12
which is sunk into the surface and houses a chilled drinks compartment.” Another design gem that Bakehouse Kitchens often displays is the marriage of fitted cabinets with free standing elements. “It can work well to site open-bottomed cupboards with legs next to a fitted kitchen area which can soften the transition from pure kitchen space to dining area.” Top Tips: • Use materials that have a high density to avoid bubbling and warping • Think about the size of plates and bowls you need to house and choose cabinets so they fit. • Consider the height of wall cupboards/shelving so it works for you. • Make sure your new kitchen design reflects exactly what you want to use the space for whether it be entertaining; watching TV; cooking; family time - or a mix of all these. • Check out all appliances available you’ll be surprised at the choice out there.

Interior Design
Quirky Finds! If you want to add a punch of personality to your property, there are plenty of quirky interior accessories to be found in and around Stamford.Whether you’re starting with a blank canvas of whitewashed walls and subtle flooring, or you’re desperate to inject some character on a shoestring budget, we’ve got some tips to suit you. For those in rented accommodation; it’s best to invest in things you can take with you when you move on to pastures new. Who wants to be bland and neutral? Let’s shake things up and get funky! Rannveig Stone
SUBLIME SEATING
Striking prints can pack a real punch in the personality stakes; I don’t think you can beat these beautiful fabrics by Linwood, featuring jungle foliage, exotic birds and animals. Stamford-based Delcor can create the perfect perch for you; they can source any fabric from any supplier in the world.
This Capri sofa is covered in Ardmore’s Monkey Bean fabric range in colour way ‘Night’. Other colours include Ash, Butterdust, Flame, Parakeet and Stone, retailing at £145 pm. The Capri is available from Delcor in a range of fabrics. Prices start at £1,553.
GO WILD IN THE KITCHEN
Add some animal magic to your kitchen with these funky jungle prints from Katie Cardew. As well as the quirky, fun products available from Katie’s online shop, she also enjoys working on commissions.
This Duke chair is covered in ‘Jungle Jive Velvet’ fabric in Navy, one of Linwood’s ‘Tango Collection’. The Duke is available in a range of fabrics and prices start at £993.
If you don’t have the budget to buy a brand new sofa, you could commission an upholsterer to upgrade a tatty sofa you already own. Local upholstery specialists Jonathan Harvey and Mark Milner are based in Foundry Lane, Stamford.
Why not add some humour to your home with a ‘Baa Stool’ or maybe an entire flock of Sheep Stools, available from The Wool Room in Empingham.
ART WITH HEART
Displaying bright, colourful artwork is a quick and easy way to transform a space and give it fresh energy. Big, bold and highly decorative canvases or prints are really fun; I absolutely love this llama portrait by Fenella Beauchamp. ‘Lulu’ is approximately 3ft/4ft, painted on board and available for sale for £500. If you don’t have the budget for an original painting, prints of Fenella’s work start at £150.

FABULOUS FLOORS
‘Made entirely from recycled plastic bottles, Weaver Green rugs look and feel just like wool or jute but are hard-wearing, water resistant, easy to clean and machine washable. A very happy house is how current owners Paulette and Trevor Davidson describe the spacious home they designed around a dovecote that was the original occupant of the plot. Amander Meade finds out more about the home they built in the tiny hamlet of Cawthorpe, just northeast of Rutland.
The Dovecote at Cawthorpe
WORDS: AMANDER MEADE PHOTOGRAPHY: ELLI DEAN
I
T was a long-held dream of Paulette’s to build a home from scratch, so when she spotted a large plot of land with initial planning to build an extension to a dovecote she was intrigued. “The dovecote itself was originally listed but de-listed when we bought it, although there were still stipulations about what we could do around it; we were only allowed to join one new wall to the original building, which influenced the shape of the house.” After several attempts at pleasing the planners, the Davidsons received approval to construct a large, family house of Stamford Stone in which their young family could grow up. Paulette designed the layout herself, and The kitchen was made by hand and has oak and granite worksurfaces.

at the top of her wish list were generously proportioned rooms and plenty of bathrooms. “My dream was a light, bright, contemporary home, and my husband just wanted a snooker room – I think we both did well.” The construction was by D and I Builders of Bourne, and they worked fast to complete the build in under 12 months. “It was important to me to recruit tradespeople locally,” remembers Paulette. The couple entertain family and friends frequently, so opted for a large, open-plan living kitchen with zoned areas of demarcation for cooking, dining and relaxing – although Paulette originally planned for her dining table to grace the entrance hall. “Things evolved, and the dining table just worked better nearer the kitchen. When the children were small, they could be watching TV while I cooked, and it was nice to be all together,” she adds. The oak-topped kitchen was hand-built by a cabinet-maker recommended to Paulette and is painted in lilac for a soothing feeling. Having always hankered after an Aga, Paulette found one for sale online, and she and Trevor travelled to Penhill in Wiltshire to collect it. “When we found ourselves travelling down an endless private drive, I knew we had to be visiting the home of a celebrity, and I was proved right when the documents accompanying the Aga listed Heather Mills as its previous owner!”
Elsewhere in the kitchen diner Paulette has kept things contemporary with pops of peacock blue used in the bar stools, dining chairs and wall light shades. “The house is painted entirely in white on the walls, then I play with colour in each room,” she explains. “White walls are a practical solution when you have a growing family, as they are so easy to re-touch. I also enjoyed making my own curtains and soft furnishings for the house in colourful Designers Guild fabric.” The master bedroom is Paulette’s favourite room and it certainly has the luxury of space thanks to the adjoining dressing room. “Without big clunky wardrobes to work around, I have rearranged this room a number of times. The bed can be moved to face the full-height French doors, which frame what I consider to be the best view around.” The Davidsons' home stands at the end of a sweeping driveway flanked by lawn and low herbaceous borders, with well-established beds with flowering plants and shrubs all around the house itself. “We have been very happy here,” says Paulette, “but it’s a big house and garden for us now, and it’s time for another family to love it as we have done. I hope it will always be a happy home, as it was intended.” The Dovecote is currently being marketed with Humberts of Stamford. To find out more contact Josh Budgen on 01780 758097/humberts.com.

HEALTH & BEAUTY Top ‘you have to try this’ products
PHOTO: ELLI DEAN
This month Rebecca Chantrell rounded up the bestselling, ‘you have to try this’ products from across Stamford. All handpicked by the salons for their popularity with customers and efficacy within treatments. This product sounds good enough to eat! Lisa’s roots lie in nutrition so no wonder she packs a punch with carefully selected ingredients such as with prickly pear and white poppy seed both known for their replenishing properties.
OILS
Lisa Armitage
Oils have made a huge comeback in recent years - the appeal being the vast choice targeting different skin concerns. Natural oils are extracted from plants, fruits, nuts, seeds and each selected for their unique ability to balance the skin whether its antibacterial properties, nourishment or anti-ageing. It’s just about choosing the right one.
SKIN FEAST Omega Facial Oil £84 @ Lisa Armitage Skincare (a local Beauty Expert who launched her own skincare line)
Lisa says: “Omega’s 3, 6 and 9 are essential for optimal skin health, especially when daily life involves too much screen time, too little sleep, a barrage of central heating or air conditioning, or exposure to harsh weather conditions. Omega Facial oil is the skincare equivalent of a mega-dose of omega supplements, feeding your skin with the nourishment it needs to replenish moisture and restore elasticity and vitality. This silky oil provides an intensive boost of essential fatty acids (EFA’s), which penetrate the skin’s deeper dermis layer to strengthen, rejuvenate and restore lustre. This is fantastic as a post summer product to restore parched dehydrated skin!”
CLEANSER Cleansing is probably the most important step in your skincare routine. Removing makeup and daily grime is essential. If it isn’t done properly makeup, dirt and dead skin can clog the pores and leave skin dull and prone to breakouts. With so many options available from oils, waters, washes and creams we asked Samantha at Equilibrium which she found most effective in treatments and why?
BeautyLab Relax Neuropeptide serum, £55.00 @ Natalie Damms
Samantha says: “Thalgo’s cleansing range is inspired by the oceans and contains the hero ingredient, Seve Bleue des Foaming Micellar Cleansing Lotion RRP Oceans. This pure spring water is drawn up from below the £26 @Equilibrium sea bed and is incredibly rich in vitamins and minerals to deeply hydrate and remineralise the skin. This foaming lotion is reminiscent of refreshing sea foam and contains tiny micellar particles that absorb make-up, oil and impurities to reveal a clearer looking complexion.” The gentle cleanser is suitable for all skin types; massage over the face and rinse with warm water.
SERUMS If you are a fan of layering products and feel like your skin has got used to your current skincare routine, then a serum might be great product to try to give your skin a boost. Used after cleansing and before moisturising, the lightweight texture penetrates the skin delivering highly concentrated active ingredients. It’s fantastic at giving a potent hit to target specific concerns such as pigmentation, firmness or soften lines.

It packs a punch with its high concentration cocktail of collagen, hyaluronic acid, vitamins and retinol. “We are the only stockists in Stamford” - Natalie Dams, the owner chose to stock this brand as its credentials were gleaming - no parabens, against animal testing and the results speak for themselves.

HEALTH & BEAUTY MASKS
24HR MOISTURISER
Masks are not only a great excuse to sit and chill for a few moments with a cup of tea or magazine, but they also intensively treat and restore the skin. If you haven’t been able to give your skin the attention it needs, 15 minutes with a mask can reset your skin completely. Brilliant for pre or post party!
If you like your skincare routines simple and fuss free, then a moisturiser that can be used day and night would suit you perfectly.
Environ Tri Biobotanical Revival Masque £54 @ RÖ Stamford
Elemis Pro-Collagen Marine Cream £82 @ The Ivy Lodge Stamford
This product gets a lot of press and features heavily in beauty magazines. Clinically proven, the powerful anti-ageing ingredients of the award-winning Pro-Collagen Marine Cream has been shown to reduce the depth of wrinkles, improve skin firmness and hydration in just 14 days. So popular that 1 pot of cream is sold every 9 seconds worldwide.
RÖ says: “Otherwise known as “THE FACELIFT IN A JAR” this product is famous for how quickly it produces results. DAYTIME MOISTURISER Throughout the year dermatologists highly recommend using a day cream with an SPF of at least 15. Whilst it won’t protect you enough to sunbathe or play sports (it won’t have the water-resistant requirements) it can provide sufficient daily protection from UV rays and pollution, which can cause premature ageing and pigmentation.
Medik8 Advanced Day Total Protect SPF30 £55 @ Renaissance

Fiona says: “My best-selling product and personal favourite is Medik8 Advanced Day Total Protect SPF30. This product is an intensely hydrating SPF moisturiser suitable for all skin types and is Medik8’s most advanced day cream ever. It is formulated to include a pollution shield and anti-ageing technology and with the addition of SPF30 and 5*UVA protection has been created to prevent premature skin ageing and protect skin from free radicals. Medik8 has recently rebranded to remove all plastics from their packaging making them still one of the top green cosmeceuticals. “This product is a personal favourite of mine and I wear it every day no matter what the weather. It is lightweight enough to be comfortable and non-greasy yet is intensely hydrating on a mature skin.”
STAMFORD LIVING AUGUST 2018
Michelle the Salon Manager says: “The Pro-Collagen Marine Cream is our most popular anti-aging and hydrating product available. It’s a ‘hero’ product that gives you results very quickly. Apply a pea size amount into the hands and warm together. Gently smooth over the face, neck and décolleté. Always use upward stroking sweeping motions when applying moisturiser to the face. For maximum benefit, use after the Pro-Collagen Quartz Lift Serum.”
PRIMER If you don’t have the luxury of being able to touch up your makeup during the day, or you work in a hot, dry environment primers work wonders keeping foundation in place. The primer contains silicones and soy protein that fill in pores and lines giving a super smooth finish to the skin. Most primers work superficially, but this one from Dermalogica also offers skincare benefits with the use of potent peptides that help to improve skin firmness, sunscreens shield against sun damage and white tea Skin perfect primer by polyphenols inhibit Dermalogica collagen damage. @ Stamford Hair Kimberley says “The and Beauty Hub primer is used at the end of a Dermalogica skin treatment to smooth and brighten the skin and give a hint of colour. This product fills in fine lines, brightens and evens out the skin for a flawless make up application. Some customers like to use it on its own during the summer months, as it comes with a high SPF of 30. I love using this product over the top of my moisturiser in the summer months, it’s gives my skin a flawless even look. I especially love the velvety texture of this product.”

Two wonderful volunteers for Stamford’s highly esteemed charity The Evergreen Care Trust tell us why they love contributing their time to help others
Why not volunteer to volunteer? Daphne Coates (left) and Emma Holttum
E
MMA Holttum and Daphne Coates have formed a strong friendship through volunteering for Evergreen. Both are motivated by a strong sense of wanting to help and support other people - and both feel that they get as much out of what they do as what they put in. Emma explains: “I got involved after the death of my granddad. Once I’d got over his death I wanted to fill the gap and do something to help older people; I felt I wanted to give something back.” Emma began by volunteering at one of the charity’s lunch clubs, but as a self-employed data marketing specialist, she has since gone on to work alongside Rosie Maclennan, Evergreen’s Volunteer Services Team Leader, in the vital task of promoting awareness of the charity’s care services along with volunteer and employment opportunities. “What I have enjoyed most is meeting so many lovely people,” Emma says. “The experience has changed me completely. I now cannot walk down the street without smiling or saying hello to an older person. I know what a difference it makes to someone who lives on their own and who may be lonely. Too many people walk along avoiding eye contact, looking down often engaged with their phones.” Emma raised over £1,000 for the charity in sponsorship when she completed the London Marathon in 2016 (she was a non-runner at the point she signed up to do it!) Last year she was one of the team working on Evergreen’s Christmas Cracker prize draw, launched by Rosie last autumn. She used her expertise to market the campaign as well as picking out each day’s winners live on social media, from December 1 to Christmas Day. One of Evergreen’s senior volunteers, Daphne Coates, was Emma’s closest ally in promoting ticket sales. The pair enjoyed visiting many of the Stamford businesses who had donated prizes for the draw, Emma taking Daphne’s photograph as she showed off various prizes. From modelling flashy sunglasses to sitting in a yoga lotus pose, and from jumping alongside the Energy girls in

“I have the view that people might look at me and think ‘if she can do it, then so can I’” a glamorous top, to posing by Charles & Dean’s Aston Martin, Daphne proved to be an adept model. “I will always remember how much fun Daphne and I had with the Christmas Cracker Draw,” says Emma. “I really feel as though I have made a friend for life. It’s made me realise that no matter how old you are, you can still enjoy trying something new and enjoy having some fun.” “From my point of view, as a marketer, I would recommend anyone who has any kind of skill, to see how they can help give a charity the benefit of their knowledge - even some small input can make a big difference. It could help them to do more and in turn, help more people.” Daphne, who has volunteered with numerous charities prior to working with Evergreen, has what can be best described as an ambassador role with the charity. She has accompanied Rosie to talk to school children, including pupils at Stamford Girls’ School, about what it’s like to grow old, and her reading of a fictional diary entry of a widow has moved audiences to tears. On weekdays, she may be found in the Evergreen
office helping with admin tasks, including speaking to members and fellow volunteers over the phone. “I have the view that people might look at me and think ‘if she can do it, then so can I,” says Daphne, who has volunteered with various charities over the years. “It’s a two-way street — you gain as much as you give. Actually, you benefit more than the charity, as it gives you a sort of warm glow of ‘look what I’ve done today to make a difference’! “Try it and see! Come along and see what Evergreen does, then find out what suits you. It’s about channelling your individual talents. Most people could do a one-to one visit for example, or may have the skills to review services, or help with the Advocacy role”. For more information on volunteering, contact Rosie Maclennan on 01780 765900 or email volunteer@evergreencare.org.uk You can find more information about the wide range of services provided by Evergreen at www.evergreencare.org.uk

Louise Goss describes the life of a mum car
Me & My Car
“One day I’ll own a car whose doors might even close automatically rather than get slammed with the enthusiastic force of a three-year-old Spider-Man. One day my boot might actually be too small to hold anything but a designer handbag.”
A
LOT of women I know seem to give their cars names. I have friends with Dolly and Tim Tam parked proudly on their driveway. My car, a fairly new Fiesta, is currently nameless. To be honest, I haven’t really had it long enough to get a sense of its personality (see, it’s still gender neutral). It was a bit of a last-minute purchase. The second car, the oh-so-not-flashy, practical, economical packhorse to lug me, children and push chair around from home to play-dates to swimming and rugby classes. In fact, any personality it may have is stifled under a permanent layer of mud. That mud-dust that engrains itself into corners and crevices I didn’t know my car had. The clean part of my car is on the back seat, the bit which never sees the light of day, hidden under the car seats. I forget what colour they actually are because I haven’t seen them for a while as I am usually ferrying around dolls, toy cars, sun hats and a random monkey who seems to like hitching a ride as well. My car (otherwise known as the portable toy box) is the go-to place when I have lost my sunglasses, my purse or a child has lost his or her favourite paw patrol sticker. My first car, my Grandma’s old Metro served me well, taking me on various adventures to see uni friends around the country and over the water to Ireland on a bit of a road trip. It was written-off by joyriders who took it from Stamford train station and left an empty vodka bottle in its place. I then owned a small but perfectly formed Ford Ka in which I played music of my choice and rode around from home to office, to gym, to friends’ houses. I sold it when I moved to London and for a few years “my ride” was a crammed tube train with someone’s armpit shoved in my face. During those years I did get to race around Silverstone in a Lotus Elise (a PR freebie) and boyfriends generally drove something small and sporty. My husband and I then had a great
28
STAMFORD LIVING AUGUST 2018
time cruising around Australia in our four-wheel drive for a few childless years. We plugged in our iPod, we listened to podcasts, chucked a bag in the back, a board on the roof and away we went. My current car hears less iPod playlist and more various renditions of Twinkle Twinkle Little Star (who knew there were so many?) This car’s Sat Nav is now on auto pilot to the nearest adventure playground or the local A&E (we are in that stage of late night fevers and ominous rashes), the only gym it goes to is preceded by ‘jungle’ and the only parties it heads to are ones full of hyper four-year-olds on a cup cake high. Indeed, sticky little finger marks and smears are just part of the paintwork. I got it valeted once. For a few minutes I enjoyed that contented feeling driving my sparkly clean car, only for the following day’s outing to be to Rutland Water – after rain. I’ve yet to shatter my son’s illusion that I drive a sports car. He sees the rear spoiler and metallic paint and instantly believes that mummy’s car is the fastest on the road. One day of course, it might be. Maybe I will be zipping around again in something less Fiesta and more Ferrari with the soundtrack of my choice in my ears rather than the angry screams of a toddler who believes safety straps are for losers. One day I’ll own a car whose doors might even close automatically rather than get slammed with the enthusiastic force of a three-year-old SpiderMan. One day my boot might actually be too small to hold anything but a designer handbag. Right now it’s a holding place for wellies, spare clothes, and has been known to host the odd nappy change. Where my glove box used to house nothing but an owner’s manual, I now need to rummage through carrier bags and emergency snacks. If I dare to peer beneath my seat I might find that plastic Paw Patrol figure, a half-eaten rice cake, a missing sock and… ah, there are my sunglasses.

UTMEG and I recently embarked on an adventure together of going back to school or should I say dog training which is as much about how I handle Nutmeg as how she behaves too. Progress is slow but worthwhile! After seeing many posts on Facebook through a friend of mine I got in touch with Thorneyash Gundogs, nr Gendey Hill, to enquire about their next term of sessions. Whilst Nutmeg is no gun dog, Sid & Helen also run training for puppies and older dogs because every now and then even the older ones can be taught new tricks - something which Sid told me just the other week when I queried whether at the age of 4.5 years, could Nutmeg really be taught anything new? Seeing Nutmeg interact with puppies and a few older dogs has been quite an eye opener and this has been seen through the training classes as well as when we are out walking and she is off lead at Hills & Holes in Barnack. As mentioned earlier, this course was as much for me as much it was her, because a dog’s behaviour is very often a response to how the owner manages them regardless of whether it is at home or out and about. I know only too well that at home Nutmeg is very comfortable and a very affectionate little companion

although thinks she is a much bigger dog when the doorbell rings. However when we are out on our walks, she can be a little defensive and nervous which can lead to barking which some
people would see as aggression. Other times she can be quite playful with other dogs, going down on her front paws and barking to say ‘play with me’ whilst other times there are dogs that want to play with her and she runs around with her tail between her legs and then hides behind me. So even one dog can have various behavioural patterns and presumptions can easily be made by an on looker. At Stamford Living we were recently brought to the attention of the poster you see here on this page, which tells you how to be ‘Dog Smart’ as well as staying safe. The website www.learnwithdogstrust.org.uk is also very informative and an interesting read whether you have a dog or not. I recently met a Scottish Terrier who had a little yellow bib on her collar which indicated she should be approached with care as she can be a little nervous. I slowly bent down and let her sniff the back of my hand, so she could suss me out by her very sensitive sense of smell and I could gauge how she would respond to that. She seemed quite happy and I then stroked her head because approaching any dog with caution is always a wise thing to do, although if they sense you are nervous this can make them bark too so whichever way we do it we won’t always get it right.

A mix of culture, gastronomy and bon vivant!
Victoria’s Social Scene S TAMFORD in summer...is there anywhere more beautiful to spend August? The incredible voluntary team, Stamford In Bloom, have been working tirelessly, creating eye catching floral displays throughout the town. The campaign #KeepingStamfordBeautiful has raised great awareness amongst home, shop and office owners, who have joined the efforts by sponsoring baskets, boxes and bicycles full of flowers! Thank you SiB and supportive organisations for the wonderful campaign and keeping Stamford in Bloom for us all to enjoy. Follow the story via Twitter @StamfordInBloom
One of my favourite gift shops is ‘Love It’ on St John’s Street. I can purchase birthday gifts for friends and family of all ages and if ever stuck for what to buy, I am always inspired within in seconds of entering the shop, and where else can you purchase Moomin mugs at a moment’s notice! It seems I am not the only one to appreciate this very special gift shop. For the second time in four years, ‘Love It’ has been deservedly crowned ‘Independent Gift Retailer of the Year’. The judging process considered customer service, shop layout, range of gifts and friendliness. I make a point of visiting ‘Love It’ regularly as business owner, Amanda Oscroft, has to be one of the friendliest people to grace our town and is a fantastic ambassador for Stamford. Always giving a warm welcome to her customers, it is little wonder ‘Love It’ has such a loyal following of customers and fans. Find out more about this award-winning shop via their Facebook page @Loveitstamford A venue synonymous with Stamford is our beloved George Hotel, known the world over for exemplary high standards, enviable fine food and wine and outstanding customer service. Cascading the George ethos, owner Lawrence Hoskins is the epitome of a great host. Regularly welcoming his guests to enjoy some of Stamford’s most memorable evenings created by head chef, Paul Reseigh and bar and cellar manager, Tracy Davenport. Most recently, Hubert de Billy, fifth generation of the Pol Roger family, spoke at a formal dining experience 32
STAMFORD LIVING AUGUST 2018
where guests learnt about the history of the world renowned champagne. The evening was spent savouring the extensive range, including the Cuvée Sir Winston Churchill, in homage to the fact he favoured Pol Roger to other refreshments. He even named the Pol Roger home ‘the most drinkable address in the world’. If you would like to experience the same champagne enjoyed by guests at the recent marriage of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, then you need only visit the George Hotel and order the Pol Roger Brut Reserve! A stunning blog by local graphic designer, Gary Curtis has really caught my eye. Gary, founder of Zero Six Design, created www.theoldbuilding.com as a place to home and showcase his stunning photographs of Georgian and Regency properties. His shots are instantly recognisable as Gary has refined the art of capturing Stamford and other areas at their most authentic, avoiding street signs and yellow lines where possible. You will no doubt be familiar with Gary’s work if you follow his Instagram account @theoldbuilding and his blog shares even more images of beautiful buildings around the UK. I can’t wait to see more of Gary’s work as each season rolls into the next.

Garden party at Walcot Hall Walcot Hall, near Barnack (just south of Stamford), is opening its elegant gates for a garden party on Sunday 26 August from 12–5pm, in aid of the MS Society’s “Stop MS Appeal 2018”. Walcot is a private family home, rarely open to the public, and the glorious grounds make the ideal setting for a summer party. The Carolean house, built to celebrate the restoration of Charles II, has passed through several families over the years. It was the Deardens, who owned it in the late 19th and early 20th century, who planted and laid out the garden as it exists today, including the unusual handkerchief tree and swamp cypress, as well as creating the stone follies that are dotted through the landscape. During World War II the US air force were barracked at the house and the gardens were filled with Nissen huts. When the Dennis family made it their home in the 1960s, the bones of the old garden were there, but the land was overgrown and the trees were running wild. The next phase of the garden’s history began. Owner Catherine Dennis says: “we’re not gardeners by nature, but we’ve inherited this wonderful place, and the family have really enjoyed breathing life back into it over the last 60 years.” Walcot is a magical domain with lots of areas to explore. There are tree-lined walkways, terraces and a walled garden, as well as an original, formal canal with a view of the house. The Dennis family have made new
additions too, including the rose garden designed by Bunny Guinness over 20 years ago, laid out with a spreading Mulberry tree at its heart. Bring a picnic, enjoy the steel band and children’s entertainments. Bar available. Tickets £15. Children free. Available from Min Pumphrey at swallowfieldclubcic@gmail.com

Shed heaven
• Family driving you nuts? Make a sanctuary in your own backyard where you can take a book, or use it as a craft room during the warmer months. TV presenter Sophie Robinson designed the sheshed below from a plain wood summerhouse from Waltons Garden Buildings (waltons. co.uk). Man caves work equally well!
Your garden shed might well be the biggest outdoor feature you’ve got. Just because it’s functional doesn’t mean it has to look dull. There are so many inspiring ways to customise a bogstandard garden shed at no great expense, and it will make an attractive focal point in your garden. Here are some ideas for you to try: • Paint the shed in two complementary colours. Country cream combined with willow green, for example, as in the photograph above, elevates the ordinary into something special. Add a couple of hanging baskets on hooks to the front, and even if it’s a junk store inside, it will look like a mini summerhouse on the exterior. Cuprinol Shades is my top choice for exterior paint. Try Harrison & Dunn in Stamford and D Norton and Son in Uppingham.

• Fix a trellis to a wall of your shed and train climbing plants to grow there. A clematis ‘Prince George’ with its big white petals would look beautiful planted against a shed painted in Cuprinol’s Black Ash (a dark charcoal grey). You can plant a clematis in a pot or in the ground. For a selection of sheds, try: • Rutland Sheds, Oakham, rutlandvillage.co.uk. • Cherry Lane – Peterborough Barn, cherry-lane.co.uk • Helpston Garden Centre, helpstongardencentre.co.uk

Growing in my garden now Sunflowers are so cheerful and easy to grow. You don’t have to stick to the classic yellow – there are many different types, including tawny brown ones and dwarf varieties. They flower from July to October, a time when other flowers may be going over, so they’re useful for revitalising a tiredlooking border. Grow them in full sun, and add slow-release fertiliser pellets to the area in which they’re planted, as they are always hungry for nutrients. When the flowers have gone over, leave the seedheads on for the birds to enjoy.
We love!
If you don’t want to grow your own vegetables, hang some on the wall instead. This beautiful antiquestyle botanical print costs £19.95 from Chez Soi, 16 St Mary’s Street, Stamford PE9 2DF, chezsoi.co.uk

Ask Leo
Stamford Pub Crawl Jean Orpin and Sue Lee have been on a pub crawl and found that Stamford’s landlords use some quirky items to decorate their pubs. Can you follow in their footsteps?
A) The Crown, 6 All Saints’ Place
The Challenge
For your interest, and an occasional clue, there are a few facts about each pub on the opposite page, but the challenge is to find which object pictured below belongs in which pub. An example is given but no other answers are provided because, if you visit the pubs, you will find them yourself. N.B. It is not recommended that you try to do all the pubs at once!
1
Daisy, Daisy, Give me your answer do! Why did you leave your bike on the wall as you were passing through?
The Crown, in close proximity to the Great North Road, was a medieval inn. In the 18thC it served the coaching trade with extensive stables at the rear. It was leased then owned by the Burghley Estate from 1734 to 1898. It had stabling for 51 horses and catered for well-to-do travellers. Today it provides a stylish and unusual décor offering a welcome to pets as well as people.
Go into the main door of the Crown, look right and you will see the bike on the wall so Picture 1 belongs with Pub A
3
You can still push pennies across the bar here but just to pay for a drink not to win a trophy.

4
The clouds around the spitfire are fleecy but maybe they are the wrong colour for this pub?
5
“Of all the gin joints, in all the towns, in all the world, she walks into mine” (Casablanca) - this bird is upstairs.

A Carillon from Paris but it jolly well tells the time here in England, not across the Channel.
Goodness knows how or why this magnificent bull got stitched up here.

This is surely the only pub in Stamford where Ena Sharples and Alf Tatlock hang out?

Water filtered for Nelson? But would it be good enough to wash this pub’s name?
Found in a Gentlemen’s Club set up by the Earl of Exeter in 1684 so maybe belonging to him?
Perhaps this pub’s namesake advised the Queen that Guinness was good for her?
11
Manufactured by Martin’s Cultivator Co these tractor seats seem to be soaring in the clouds.
In which of these pubs can you find the objects pictured on the opposite page? B) The Bull and Swan, 25 High Street, St Martin’s
G) The Lord Burghley, 17 Broad Street
This was originally a medieval house which in the late 16th century was converted into a small inn with stables behind. Later, it became a staging post for coaches with a courtyard to accommodate coaches; and horses attending Stamford Races had to be entered here. The inn can be seen in Turner’s painting of Stamford in 1798. It is now the only public house south of the river.
A pub here called the Rising Sun was set up in a medieval house following the 1830 Beerhouse Act which enabled any rate-payer to make and sell beer on payment of a licence fee. The pub closed in 1964 and the property was taken over by a builders’ merchants. In 1982 the building was demolished and rebuilt as a pub by the Burghley Estate called The Lord Burghley. It is a free house.
C) The Golden Fleece, Sheepmarket
H) Melbourns, 21 -22 All Saints’ Street
This name was first mentioned in 1840. The sheep market was held on the square outside, giving the pub its name. It provided for many customers during the St Simon and St Jude Fair in November. Originally tied to Hunts’ Brewery on Water Street it is now tied to Everards of Narborough Leicester. Before the cattle market closed many farmers used to meet here on Mondays.
A brewery was started here by Edwards in 1826 and run by Melbourn’s from 1869. In 1971 it was bought by the Earl of Gainsborough but needed extensive repairs so was closed. Samuel Smith took over the brewery and restored the buildings in the early 1990s. The antique steam brewing equipment is now used to brew fruit beers, mainly for America but also available in the pub.
D) The Green Man, 29 Scotgate
I) Paten & Co, 7 All Saints Place
The Green Man dates back at least to 1796 when it was on a list of public houses drawn up for the 10th Earl of Exeter. For many years it was tied to Hunts’ Brewery on Water Street but is now a free house. It is well known locally for being the best real ale pub with beer festivals in the garden at the rear. The current landlord has recently redecorated the interior and is very welcoming.
This late 18thC building became a wine and spirit merchant’s business in 1837. Patens of Peterborough bought it in 1909 refacing it in the 1930s with timber framing, stained glass and tiles. Named the Marsh Harrier in 1970 it was renovated and renamed the Periwig in 1996. It has recently received another facelift and new name. It has superb views over Red Lion Square from the first floor.
E) The Jolly Brewer 30 Foundry Road
J) The St Mary’s Vaults, 19 St Mary’s Street
This pub, built in 1830, was originally named the New Chequers by the landlord of the original Chequers which was in St Peter’s Street. For a time in the 1870s it became a brewery but reverted to a pub ten years later with the yard used for housing. It has also been known as Brewers’ Inn and Brewery Inn. In 1924 it was taken over by Melbourn’s. who renamed it The Jolly Brewer in 1970.
A late Medieval Inn, this was originally the Eagle and Child. Once owned by St Mary Magdalen College, Oxford, since 1935 it has belonged to Samuel Smith’s, the Yorkshire Brewery. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries it was listed as a wine and spirit merchants. It had probably been so for much longer hence the term ‘Vaults’ in its name. It had a quoits alley, a game popular in Stamford in the early 20th century.
F) The King’s Head, 19 Maiden Lane
K) Tobie Norris, 13 St Paul’s Street
The King’s Head opened in 1825 in a timber framed medieval building later faced with stone. It had its own skittle alley and at one time it was headquarters of the Stamford Town Quoit and Skittle Club. It is the smallest pub in Stamford with only two rooms and a courtyard garden. An outside wall faces on to St Michael’s churchyard and has a collection of interesting monuments.
This pub gets its name from Tobie Norris, a notable bell founder who purchased the property in 1617. He had already cast some bells and, conducting his business from here, made bells for many local churches including St George’s. Much more recently the building was used as the R.A.F. Association Club before being converted to a pub in 2005. It is full of quirky items.
A reader has noted that within a short distance of Stamford there are at least 6 pubs called the Blue Bell and would like to know the origin of the name. Has anyone any suggestions? Ask Leo would like to hear from you. Email them at askleo@btinternet.com STAMFORD LIVING AUGUST 2018

I could not walk past these beautiful handmade gifts by Sally Nencini in Emma Cutmore. Also made from the same Norfolk lambswool, this elephant (£35) is super soft and adorable for any child’s bedroom. Emma Cutmore, St Mary’s Passage, Stamford, 01780 482870
If we are out and about over the summer, I am starting to tune out to the constant whine of, “Please can we have an ice cream?” It seems to be the question always hovering on their lips so in the spirit of summer but with a good dose of ‘healthy’ we decided to create our own frozen ice lollies. These are great as a cooling treat, super simple and taste delicious! What you need: Makes 4-6 lollies • Half a punnet of strawberries • 200ml coconut milk (the creamy stuff from a can is better) • 1tbsp icing sugar/coconut sugar (to taste). • Note: We made ours without adding sugar as the strawberries were really sweet and there were no complaints, but a little extra sweetness might be preferred. Method: Hull the strawberries and lightly chop. Sprinkle any sugar you are using over the strawberries. In a blender mix strawberries and coconut milk until smooth. Pour into lolly moulds, add sticks and freeze for 4 hours or overnight. Eat and enjoy! Any extra mixture can be lightly frozen and enjoyed as an ice cream sorbet too! STAMFORD LIVING AUGUST 2018

If only Every Day was a Golfing Day
Luffenham Heath Golf Course
Karen Haynes
A mother of two, and accomplished seamstress, Karen has a handicap of 2.5, and currently holds the honour of being Club Champion at Luffenham Heath Golf Club, a title she has won no less than 13 times! At what age did you start playing golf? I started hitting a ball at around 12 years old but began playing properly at the age of 19. How often do you play? I play about four rounds a week in the summer, but generally head to the practice ground on the days I’m not playing. I do not play at all in the winter; my golfing season tends to be April until October. Why did you choose to become a member of Luffenham Heath Golf Club? Luffenham Heath is challenging and interesting, and also very beautiful. My Mother was a member first and once I achieved a handicap at North Luffenham Golf Club I decided to join Luffenham Heath. I joined as a junior, but as an adult you need sponsors and a playing in round with a couple of Committee members. What appeals to you about golf? Where do I begin? Firstly, it gets you away from mobile phones so you can spend quality time with people, without the interruption of modern technology. I also like the personal challenge, as I’m always trying to improve my own game, and I enjoy the competitions. As a sport it is a great form of exercise. You walk for miles, which is physically demanding. It is mentally challenging too, as you are always working out the yardages, wind direction, slope, to decide which club to hit, in order to achieve a great round. And lastly, I find it is three hours of downtime, which we all need in this crazy busy world! If you could choose to play any golf course in the World, where would you play? As I have young children I do not go too far from home, but I love Luffenham Heath, and Hollinwell in Nottinghamshire is a favourite too. Luffenham Heath Golf Club Stamford Rd, South Luffenham, Stamford PE9 3UU www.luffenhamheath.org Adult Membership - by proposal only. Open to visiting golfers throughout the year by prior arrangement.

Marketing Manager for a Norwegian Paint company and a new member of the Toft Hotel Golf Club in 2018. John has a handicap of 19. At what age did you start playing golf? I began playing golf at 33 years old. What prompted you to take up golf? Some colleagues at work suggested I took up golf and I have been playing ever since. How often do you play? I play once a week when time allows. Why did you choose to become a member of Toft Golf Club? Since returning to the UK from Dubai in 2014 I have been a member of various golf clubs in the area but I have recently settled for Toft Golf Club, as it is the most convenient place to meet friends who live in Bourne. I really enjoy the atmosphere here at Toft Golf Club. There is always lots going on in the clubhouse and it is a relaxed, and very social club. What appeals to you about golf? It is really good exercise. It is self-challenging; I find myself always trying to better my previous round’s score. If you could choose to play any golf course in the World, where would you play? The Best of Local Business! Holly Lodge Dog Field

UST a twentyminute hop down the A1 towards Huntingdon brings you to the idyllic countryside setting of Holly Lodge, the farm that’s been home to the Warrener family for an impressive three generations. Owned and run by Geoff and Lucy Warrener, you can expect to find a mixture of arable land and livestock on arrival … but there is also much more to this particular farm than first meets the eye. British farming has never experienced so many challenges and so many opportunities, with farmers having to think outside the box more than ever before in order to keep their businesses productive and relevant. Entrepreneurial Lucy is embracing this new way of life wholeheartedly, with a plethora of diversification projects and ideas aiming to make the most of all the resources that the farm has to offer … with Holly Lodge Dog Field the centrepiece of her hard work. ‘It can be hard to come up with truly original ideas,’ says Lucy, ‘a bit like looking for a needle in a haystack!’ Her lightbulb moment came after taking delivery of two new family members in the form of Basil

the Norfolk terrier and Dill the cocker spaniel. ‘I took the puppies to training and met so many people who said that they loved their dog but couldn’t let them off the lead’ she recalls ‘and I realised that converting a field and cart s hed into a purpose-built dog facility would give people somewhere to spend quality time with their pets without any worry.’ With the help of husband Geoff and daughters Emily and Beccy, Lucy transformed a three-acre paddock into a pet paradise, featuring toys, agility equipment and a huge open space for dogs to enjoy themselves. The Warrener family ethos is simple, aiming to give owners an exclusive, safe space to enjoy with their beloved hound … all in the beautiful setting of the peaceful Cambridgeshire countryside. ‘We’re mad about our dogs, and It’s really lovely to see people being able to get closer to their pets,’ reflects Lucy. If you want to build your dog’s confidence off the lead, practise some new tricks, or even arrange a puppy party, then Holly Lodge is the place for you. The field can be booked in hour slots, with prices starting from £10 for two dogs, and waste bins and fresh water all provided. ESTLED quietly in the grounds of Island House near Elton (famous for being the spot where Kenneth Grahame drew inspiration for his wonderful novel, The Wind in The Willows), the Arc Cabin is a little slice of pure escapism just a short journey from Stamford. Created by nutritional therapist Lotte Hughes, the simple wooden cabin lies on the riverbank in the midst of a beautiful poplar plantation and promises a true countryside retreat. Two pubs in great walking areas
Food & Drink News
The Cross Keys, King’s Cliffe Bridget Steele visits a quaint pub in a charming village
W
ALKING in to The Cross Keys at King’s Cliffe on a summer evening, I was struck by the relaxed atmosphere of drinkers and diners mixed together, some watching the football, others chatting in the bar or away from screens in the snug. Ian Cartmell took over the pub earlier this year and has swiftly worked on making it welcoming and friendly. The pub offers six rooms for Bed and Breakfast, and there is a separate function room that Ian is keen to promote for private parties – they can cater for 50–60 people. He’s also keen for The Cross Keys to be a welcome stop for the many walkers and cyclists in the area. With a new chef, Germaine Ellis, on board, the dining options include plenty of favourite pub classics as well as an £11.95 two-course set-price menu (£15.95 for three courses). Food is on offer every day. Tuesday is Curry Night with a curry (chicken, lamb or veg), served with naan, rice and salad, wine or beer for £10.95; Wednesday night, meanwhile, is Steak Night, with a choice of rib eyes or sirloin steak with a bottle of red or white wine for two at £30. There’s a great selection of regularly alternating beers too – we enjoyed The Cross Keys Beer, brewed by the King’s Cliffe Brewery. See also our King’s Cliffe walk in this issue. Exeter Arms, Barrowden Clare Peel visits one of the region’s best located pubs
I
T’S been two years since the Wades took over the Exeter Arms in Barrowden, Rutland. Tom and Joanne began their new venture with their daughter Jessica back in 2016, opening the doors to the public at the end of April after four intensive weeks of restoration. The couple knew the pub from when they moved to Barrowden 14 years ago and had been certain that one day they would like the opportunity to run it. Looking back, they acknowledge that as first-time pub owners the first six months were very challenging with much to learn so quickly. They are very proud to say that two years down the line they feel they have now created their vision of a characterful, relaxed, warm and welcoming environment for all customers new and old to enjoy. Stamford Living editor, Nicholas, and I went on a beautiful late June lunchtime – the village was looking incredible, with its golden-hued architecture, archetypal English village green and classic duck pond and glorious countryside views as far as the eye can see. We were wonderfully warmly received by Joanne, who was happy to help with recommendations from the menu – dishes are all home cooked, with local produce used where possible, and there’s a really great range at competitive prices from soups and sandwiches to pub classics to more elaborate à la carte creations. I started with the confit duck parcels (£5.50), which came with hoi sin sauce and elegant, palate-cleansing strips of cucumber and a scattering of sesame seeds; it had a lovely sweetness that got the meal going nicely. Nicholas’s starter, skewers of grilled salmon and colourful peppers served on a bed of asparagus and with a honey dressing (£6.95), looked
the part and definitely passed the asparagus test – correctly cooked with a lovely crunch, that is. For the main course I had the naturally smoked haddock with a silky-smooth carrot purée, new potatoes and a creamy lemon caper sauce (£12.95) that had just the right tang, while Nick opted for the lamb cutlets (£16.95), a beautifully presented dish served with seasonal vegetables, new potatoes and a rich mint gravy. It was delightful to enjoy our meal looking over the village green – a real treat year-round. The portions were very generous, and we didn’t quite have room for dessert, opting for coffee instead, but we admired the trail of sweets such as trio of ice cream and the summer pudding heading for the next table. Over the past two years Joanne and Tom have developed a lively programme of events including: Take-Out Tuesdays, Wicked-Wednesday Steak Nights, Thirsty Thursday Happy Hours, Family Fridays, a monthly Quiz Night and, every third Thursday of the month, an Open Mic Night. The pub also supports a variety of village groups and events including a pétanque team, book clubs, the annual village fete and a collection of vintage classic car meets throughout the spring and summer. The pub is also a great venue for bespoke wedding celebrations and birthday or anniversary parties – these can be held both inside and outside in the large beer garden at the rear (a nice space for children to play in). Additionally, there are three B&B rooms. Sunday lunch is extremely popular here too. “This quintessential country pub has so much to offer, with greatquality food, fine local ales and delicious wines all at great value,” Tom told us. “You won’t be disappointed.” An extra attraction is the great walking country all around – there’s a lovely walk from here along the valley to Harringworth, then back round via Wakerley Woods. LIFE’S A PICNIC… you just cannot plan the weather! A picnic is described in the Concise Oxford Dictionary as “an outing or excursion, including a packed meal eaten out of doors”. Expanding on this, you could say that it should ideally take place in scenic surroundings or in conjunction with a public event, and usually during the summer months. August, therefore, has to be one of the most popular months of the year for picnicking. Deborah Pennell discovers some great picnic locations and suggests local businesses who could help fill your hampers with deliciously different goodies.
Picnic in the woods There are several beautiful woods in the area with excellent picnicking facilities. Among the largest is Rockingham Forest, just off the A47. You can also enjoy a family picnic in Fineshade Woods, where the Forestry Commission have placed picnic benches around the woodland trails. Alternatively, base yourself by Top Lodge, next to the main car parks or at the children’s adventure playground nearby, where there are plenty of picnic benches for your use. Walk on well-maintained forest paths, suitable for wheelchairs, or meander off the track down woodland glades to get away from it all. This is a perfect spot to take dogs too; water dishes are provided around the picnic benches in the courtyard at Top Lodge, and the majority of tables are fitted with clasps to attach leads to, keeping your pooch safe whilst you devour your pack up. And there is no need for your dog to feel left out either, as you can treat them to their own sausage ice cream, served up at the cafe! Children’s activities include a fantastic adventure playground close to the car park, a fun Highway Rat Activity trail, a Gruffalo orienteering course, bicycle hire, and a bird observation hide a short walk into the woods. On the opposite side of the A47 lie the historic ancient Wakerley Great Woods, a more untamed setting, popular with mountain bikers for the marked trails and challenging terrain. The car park here is set amongst majestic larch trees and includes a grassed area for games and picnicking.

Picnic on the beach Despite being around 50 miles from the nearest sea, we do have a beach in Rutland. Travel to the Sykes Lane car park on the north side of Rutland Water and find golden sands littered with sandcastles. Due to the size of this manmade beach you may struggle to park more than a small rug on the sand, but adjacent to the beach there is a large area of grass that offers more space to sit and avoids the inevitability of getting sand in your sandwiches! Sykes Lane also boasts a children’s adventure playground, mini golf, a designated dog-walking area, an interactive visitor centre and the locally renowned, Bugtopia, where you can get up close and personal with large lizards, some cheeky meercats and a 9-ft-long boa constrictor!
Picnic by the water
Picnic in the gardens We are lucky to have a plethora of historic houses and estates in this area with gardens open to the public. Some allow you to picnic, most notably Grimsthorpe Castle, Burghley House and Easton Walled Gardens. Each offers a completely different experience. Visit the Burghley Sculpture Garden, where it is possible to picnic amongst the contemporary sculptures, on the side of the picturesque lake. This is a beautiful place to dine alfresco, with neatly mown grass pathways winding their way amongst ancient trees and shrubs, which are tamed to form archways and outdoor rooms where the sculptures are nestled. The 2018 exhibition (“Otherwordly”) runs until October and includes a life size 17-m-long depiction of Kylo Ren’s Star Wars TIE Silencer, by eccentric local inventor and YouTube sensation, Colin Furze. On a hot, sunny day there is even the chance to cool off in the Garden of Surprises, but do not set up your picnic in this area, as no food or drink is allowed.
Picnic at The Burghley Land Rover Horse Trials
As touched upon opposite (under Picnic on the beach) there is no end of places to picnic around Rutland Water, with picnic tables found in many sites, but also large grassy areas to lay down a rug and open up the hamper. Some of the grass areas off the car parks have barbecue stands, so if you are considering halloumi skewers, hot sausages, or marinated chicken, there are endless opportunities. For peace and quiet, and to get away from the madding crowd, park at the Barnsdale car park and walk into the beautiful beech woods to the east. Here you will find a bird-watching hide and several places to picnic by the water’s edge. Alternatively, base yourself below Barnsdale Hall Hotel and enjoy the stunning views across to Hambleton whilst you munch on your cheese and chutney sandwich. For fun and entertainment, head for the Whitwell entrance to Rutland Water. Here you will find large areas of grass beside the water, picnic tables and barbecue stands, as a well as entertainment for all. The ever-expanding Aqua Park is a great place to build up an appetite, and also makes fantastic spectator sport! Paddle boarding, sailing, kayaking and other water sports are also available from this site. A pre-picnic workout on the popular outdoor gym comes highly recommended. For a more peaceful setting the Normanton car park offers a large grassy area leading down to the water with barbecue stands, and within a short walk of the car park you can picnic in the lee of the historic Normanton church, and watch the boats from nearby Rutland Water Sailing Club on the water. And do not forget the River Welland, which runs through a large stretch of the county with footpaths along its banks – this is a great place to unwrap a sandwich, and while away some hours listening to birdsong and the mesmerising flow of running water.
If you have been lucky enough to scoop one of the much sortafter Picnic Parking tickets for the Saturday of Burghley Horse Trials, then you may well be aware that a hotly contested “Tailgate Picnic” competition runs throughout this car park. People go completely over the top, and it is worth just walking around this area to witness full bars with water features, silver candelabra, best linen, the finest glassware and, of course, the swankiest picnics you may ever set eyes on. This competition is just for the people who have purchased Picnic Parking, and as in previous years will be judged by a Land Rover ambassador. Land Rover, the main sponsors of Burghley Horse Trials, have in the past coerced Land Rover ambassadors such as Adam Henson and Zara Tindall to award the coveted prize of “Best Tailgate Picnic”, but the identity of this year’s judge is yet to be announced. This is a hotly fought contest, showcasing picnicking at another level!
Picnic at an outdoor event Whether it be Nevill Holt Opera, Tolethorpe (for the Stamford Shakespeare Co.), Battle Proms, a live music concert, Bird Fair or a country show, there is a multitude of occasions over the summer when there is a chance to pack up a picnic, chairs and a rug. At Tolethorpe, for example, you can enjoy a relaxed picnic in the beautiful gardens with the exquisite backdrop of Tolethorpe Hall, before heading into the auditorium to enjoy one of the many excellent plays put on here. The grounds open well in advance of the performances, so all those choosing to picnic are well accommodated. Ready-prepared picnics can be ordered in advance for evening performances through their website.

A Pub Worth a Visit
The Bertie Arms at Uffington Bertie Lane, Uffington PE9 4SZ Since opening its doors under the new ownership of James and Katie Genever in April 2017, The Bertie Arms has reinstated itself as a ‘must go to’ local pub. With great food and a vibrant atmosphere, this charming pub is definitely worth a visit. Katie, who originally qualified as a nurse, before managing The Periwig in Stamford and Smith’s in Bourne said, “as my husband’s family have lived in Uffington village for more than three generations, we took over the pub with the hope of recreating a focal point for the community.” And it would appear they have achieved just this. The pub has a comfortable, homely feel without being pretentious and the helpful staff and great food all combine to create a perfect place for people to meet, like the regular Monday ‘knit and natter’ group, and many locals. On Friday and Saturday nights the Food Hut, a converted Shepherd’s Hut in the car park, provides a ‘Street Food’ option for those who require fast delicious food without the fuss, to accompany a drink. The menu is worked around seasonal and local; sharing plates, catch of the day, pies and lighter bites all come at reasonable prices. An upstairs room offers a fantastic space for private dining, supper clubs and corporate meetings with seating for around 20 and a smart TV fitted. Live screenings of all major sporting events are shown in the bar area of the pub with a mix of sofas and comfortable seating. The TV upstairs can also be used if requested. To book for dinner, or enquire about the upstairs room to hire, then please call Katie on 01780 766400 Opening Times: 9am – 11pm Monday –Saturday 11am – 10.30pm Sunday Please note, booking is always advised for dinner. No food is served on a Monday, although the Morton Fish & Chip van stops off in the car park at around 7.30pm, and Katie says, “we are more than happy if people want to bring their fish and chips into the pub to eat.”

Ingredient of the Month
Broad Beans The taste of the humble broad bean was totally destroyed for me back in my school days. Overcooked, grey, pungent and with a glutinous texture, they were always the vegetable I moved to the side of my plate or left, hidden under my knife and fork! However, broad beans have made a resurgence in popularity over the last few years, and I urge you to try them in this recipe, which will hopefully re-enlighten your taste buds to this much maligned vegetable. Crushed Broad Bean Bruschetta with crumbled goat’s cheese, chilli and mint • 500g broad beans (weight in their pods), podded • a handful of podded peas (or use frozen if easier) • 1 lemon, zest and juice • Extra Virgin Olive oil • Small bunch mint leaves, finely chopped • Pinch dried chilli flakes • 150g soft goat’s cheese, crumbled • 4 slices of sourdough
• 1 garlic clove • Sea Salt & freshly milled black pepper • 50g bag of pea shoots to garnish 1) Boil the beans and a handful of peas in salted water for 3-5 minutes until tender, then mash roughly with a fork. 2) Zest the lemon, and add the juice of half the lemon into the bean mixture. 3) Stir in 3 tablespoons of olive oil, the lemon zest, mint and chilli. Season with salt and pepper to taste. It may be necessary to add a little more lemon juice at this stage. Leave to cool 4) Griddle the sourdough, to toast it and give it flavour, then rub with a cut clove of garlic. 5) Pile the broad bean mixture onto the toasted sourdough and crumble over the goat’s cheese. Garnish with pea shoots and drizzle with some extra olive oil to serve.

Secondary Schools Open Evenings The move to secondary school or to sixth form is a big step, so it’s worth attending open days or arranging a tour to find out which will suit your child best. Alysia Anderson swots up on local schools. Bourne Academy (01778 422365; www.bourneacademy.org) This non-selective mixed state secondary for 11-18 year olds is part of the South Lincolnshire Academies Trust and works closely in partnership with Spalding Academy. Consistently oversubscribed, the school achieves good academic results and continually invests in upgrading classrooms and facilities. It offers BTEC courses alongside A Levels, such as in Music and Food Technology, and works with local companies to provide a Business Mentoring Programme for students. A wide variety of sports and extra-curricular clubs includes trampolining, golf, drama and music. Open evenings are held in September and July, with dates available on the website. PHOTO: ELLI DEAN
Arthur Mellows Village College (01733 252235; www.arthurmellows.org) This respected academy in Glinton for 11-18 year olds joined the Four Cs Multi Academy Trust in 2017. The school holds Specialist Status in Technology and courses cover both the academic and vocational, with exam results well above the national average. Facilities include music, science, ICT and media rooms and an innovation centre for engineering. Students are encouraged to participate in music, sports and performing arts. The open evenings are on 4 October for entry into Year 7 and 7 November for Sixth Form.
Bourne Grammar School (01778 422288; www.bourne-grammar.lincs.sch.uk) Bourne Grammar takes high-achieving pupils at the 11+ (and some 12+ entries into Year 8) from Stamford, Bourne, the Deepings and Peterborough. As one of the top performing selective secondaries in Lincolnshire, demand for places is always high, with 240 places available in Year 7. Recent improvements include a new £4m science block equipped with 15 labs. Sports, music and the arts are actively encouraged and pupils enjoy stimulating trips and after-school activities. The Sixth Form open evening is on 8 November while Year 7 information evenings are held in late June. The 11+ exams take place in mid-September.
Casterton Business & Enterprise College (01780 762168; www.castertoncollege.com) This co-ed community college caters for 11-16-year olds, with around 900 pupils in total. Pupils consistently achieve excellent academic results and the maths department in particular has been recognised with national teaching awards. Facilities include an Enterprise Centre where pupils learn maths, ICT and business. Music and drama are well catered for and extensive afterschool pursuits range from fencing and archery to Young Chamber. Casterton’s open evenings for Year 7 entry are held in early July but a personal tour with the Head can be arranged at any time.
The Deepings School (01778 342159; www.deepingschool.org.uk) The Deepings School is a mixed 11-18 comprehensive school with almost 1,600 students on roll, including 270 in the Sixth Form. It is part of CfBT Schools’ Trust, having converted to academy status in 2012. The school is strong on Business and Enterprise, with links to local companies. The Sixth Form has a dedicated centre with seminar rooms, internet café, library and state-ofthe-art IT facilities. There is also a Science Centre and a Conference Centre, with funding secured for a new Design, Technology and Art Centre. Ongoing investment in IT means students enjoy first-class computing facilities. There is a Year 7 open evening on 27 September for pupils currently in Years 4,5 and 6, with additional October open morning dates to be published online.
The King’s (The Cathedral) School (01733 751541; www.kings.peterborough.sch.uk) Founded by Henry VIII in 1541 to educate young choristers, this highly regarded co-ed comprehensive school maintains a close bond with Peterborough Cathedral today. Pupils generally join at Year 7 or the Sixth Form, the latter requiring a minimum qualification requirement for entry. The Junior Department for Years 3 to 6 is principally to educate choristers. Academic results are excellent and the school offers a wide range of extra-curricular activities. The open evening for Year 7 entry is on 18 September and for Sixth Form on 8 November.

STAMFORD LIVING AUGUST 2018
Oakham School (01572 758758; www.oakham.rutland.sch.uk) An independent school for boarders and day pupils aged 10-18, Oakham blends academic achievement with wide-ranging opportunities outside the classroom. A new Head, Henry Price, formerly Head of Wellington School in Somerset, has been appointed to succeed Nigel Lashbrook, following the latter’s retirement. The Lower School for pupils aged 10-13 is undergoing a £1m refurbishment with extensions to classrooms and boarding facilities. The school has also created a new medical and pastoral wellbeing centre, new hockey pitches and improvements to the sports hall, adding an extra classroom, larger changing rooms and a new viewing gallery. Alongside a wide range of academic subjects at GCSE, A Level and International Baccalaureate, Oakham also offers BTECs in Business and Sports Science. Lower School open days are on 15 September and 6 October; for pupils aged 13+ on 29 September; and for Sixth Form, on the evening of 20 September.
Stamford Welland Academy (01780 761000; www.stamfordwellandacademy.org) The only state secondary in Stamford, SWA is part of the Cambridge Meridien Academies Trust (CMAT). SWA welcomed a new Head last Easter, Vicky Lloyd (see our interview in July issue), who previously worked for 12 years at Belvoir High School, one of Leicestershire’s top performing schools. A significant rise in standards, record GCSE results and increasing admissions into Year 7 have resulted since the change to academy status, with 460 pupils now on roll. The school offers a wide variety of extra-curricular opportunities, including army Cadet Force and water sports, alongside a programme of around 50 different ‘Session 6’ enhancement activities after school. Recent improvements to the facilities include two new fully equipped science labs. The open day for Year 7 entry is held in October.
Uppingham School (01572 822216; www.uppingham.co.uk) Established in 1584, this co-ed independent school is one of the country’s best boarding schools. There are around 785 boarders and just a handful of day pupils, aged from 13-18. The school offers a diversity of academic and extra-curricular opportunities amongst first-class facilities, including an outstanding sports centre. Exam results are very good and the school, set in the town of the same name, is particularly known for its music and performing arts. Pupils wishing to secure a place must take entrance exams and there are some bursaries available. To arrange a visit to the school or for more information on how to apply, contact the admissions department.
Stamford School and Stamford High School (01780 750311; www.ses.lincs.sch.uk) The Stamford Endowed Schools have long been part of the fabric of the town’s community, with the boys’ school dating back to 1532. The schools offer ‘rounded and grounded’ education for boys and girls aged two to 18, located at three sites across the town. A ‘diamond’ structure allows for a highly tailored curriculum, with children moving from the co-ed Junior School to single-gender education at Stamford School (boys) and the High School (girls) from ages 11-16. At Sixth Form, the schools become coed again, when students have a choice of 26 A Level subjects and two BTECs in Business Studies and Sports Science. Extra-curricular activities are numerous and varied with many, such as drama, music, CCF and some sports involving boys and girls together. Junior School pupils automatically gain a
secondary place; otherwise entrance exams are held in January. A range of scholarships and means-tested bursaries are available. All three schools offer flexible boarding although the majority are day pupils. Facilities are excellent, including an extensive sports centre with a 50m pool. An exciting new initiative is the Ideal Classroom project, creating flexible, IT-enabled classrooms with write-on desks and walls, projectors and other state-of-the-art equipment to enhance both teaching and learning. The Junior School is currently completing the refurbishment of all its classrooms and the initiative will continue to be rolled out across the senior schools, with some classrooms already converted. The Open Days for both senior schools take place on 6 October, the Sixth Form evening is on 10 October and the Junior School Open Day is on 13 October.
Oundle School (01832 277122; www.oundleschool.org.uk) Established in the 1500s, this co-ed independent school plays a significant role in the life of Oundle town. Applicants sit an entrance exam and may enter at 11+, 13+ or in the Sixth Form. Although day pupils are welcome, Oundle is one of England’s three largest boarding schools. Its impressive range of facilities and activities include rowing on the River Nene. Open days take place each quarter, by arrangement with the Admissions Office. The next Open Day dates are 15 September, 2 February 2019 and 18 May 2019. A range of bursaries and scholarships are available, the latter for 11+, 13+ and 16+ in various disciplines. LOCAL WALK
King’s Cliffe & Blatherwycke Wait for a crisp, blue sky day and set out on this wonderful walk, traversing a varied landscape from deep woodland to sheep-grazing pastures and a path alongside a babbling brook
THE ROUTE
1
Park at the Post Office in the centre of King’s Cliffe. Head west along the main village street, then cross the Blatherwycke Road up a track called Wood Lane over the disused railway line. Almost immediately after the railway line, turn left over a stile and follow the path across open access land in a westerly direction; at the start of the second field keep to the right along the edge of the wood and follow this path until you cross a stile and enter the woods. The path through the woods is reasonably well marked, but keep your eyes peeled; it briefly follows the route of the disused railway line and then passes behind a derelict footbridge. Shortly you come out into a field; turn right, following the line of the woods, and, where the field edge bears sharply round to the right, strike out across the field to a stile you can just see on the far side of the field. Follow the path through the wood; in a few minutes you will come out on a metalled track; follow this to the right and go through a gate. There is then a steepish descent down towards a small brook, keeping Fineshade Abbey on your right. On reaching the brook, turn left, keeping this side of it, passing through a sheep pen and along a field; after a couple of hundred yards start to climb in a southerly direction. Once over the brow of the hill you will get a view of Blatherwycke Park Farm; follow the path through a further four fields until you reach it. Walk through Blatherwycke village along the road until it turns sharp right; at this point turn left in a northeasterly direction, passing by the church; the path at this stage is easy to follow.

About three quarters of a mile after the church there is a little gap in the fence on your left; one path goes towards a footbridge over Willow Brook, but you need to take the path that turns immediately right after going through the gap, heading towards Alders Farm. At the other side of the farmyard, walk on the right of the fence and fairly soon you will come alongside the brook; this is a charming part
2
of the walk and a good spot for a picnic. After a mile, cross a footbridge over the brook and you will soon find yourselves approaching King’s Cliffe. Cross a stile into a field (beware of the bull sign) and then another. Pass the allotments into Orchard Lane – follow this straight ahead towards the church, through the lovely back ways of the village; you come out on to Hall Yard. Turn left and you will be back at the Post Office.

POINTS OF INTEREST King’s Cliffe The Domesday Book records that the village comprised more than a square mile of woodland in 1086 with only a small amount of cultivated land. Successive kings visited the area to hunt, notably King John and Henry II. Blatherwycke Blatherwycke’s Holy Trinity Church is in the former grounds of Blatherwycke Hall, built by the Stafford family in 1713 in Grecian style but sold for £1,600 in 1948 and demolished for building materials. The garden is being restored. So far, a large kitchen garden, wall-trained fruit trees, extensive herbaceous borders, seasonal beds, parterre, orchard and wild-flower meadows have been created. Garden occasionally open to the public.

Charity Coffee & Cake Day in Barnack Sat Aug 18th 10am-4pm

HILST Stamford Stoves have the largest showroom in the area for wood burning stoves, the team behind the company thought it would be great to do something different and raise money for two charities close to their hearts; Mind and The UK Sepsis Trust. Charities that are both very current with raising awareness and help for mental health and the life-threatening effects of Sepsis. To ensure the event will be a popular one, they have decided to promote a Charity Coffee & Cake Day. The team will be making the cakes (including gluten free ones) by using the ESSE range cookers that are on display within their showroom and a local coffee machine retailer will be lending them a couple of machines to ensure top quality coffee can be served on the day. There will also be an array of prizes to be won through the sale of raffle tickets, with all proceeds going towards the nominated charities. Cyclists need not fear that their prizes might be too big for their pouches, as Stamford Stoves will deliver them at a later date. Equilibrium set to expand further
S
AM and Selena, co-owners of Equilibrium, have nearly completed their most exciting and ambitious project to date, the creation of a spa facility in the re-furbished 21St Mary’s St, formally the Little Surgery. This early nineteenth century building provides a stunning backdrop to an array of health & beauty offerings. There are so many historic features but at the same time the rooms are light, with a contemporary feel, each dedicated to a different aspect of the spa experience. There will also be sitting-out areas and light bites available, so this will be a place to spend time in and to truly relax. The spa facilities are an extension of Equilibrium’s offering in St Paul’s St, and will be opened in September. Watch this space. News & Notes Peters’ Cleaners
T
UCKED away on St Paul’s Street, next to the Tobie Norris and opposite the Stamford Endowed Schools Shop is Peters’ Cleaners, Stamford’s independent dry cleaners and, up until recently, Stamford’s best kept secret. Over the last two years the shop has undergone a transformation and 55 years after the business was established it has re-gained its reputation for exceptional cleaning and customer care. But it doesn’t stop there as Peters’ Cleaners is expanding its offering by launching 3 new services: • Handbag restoration – Peters’ Cleaners is now an agent for the Handbag Spa and customers can get their designer handbags cleaned, repaired or completely restored. • Invisible Mending – ‘re-weaving’ to restore damaged items. • Leather Cleaning – for trousers, jackets and skirts. The shop is managed by Marianne Tarrant, a born and bred Stamfordian for whom outstanding customer service is instinctive. She is supported by an operations team with over 120 years of dry cleaning experience – the perfect combination to ensure complete customer satisfaction. As an independent, Peters’ Cleaners delivers quality and fast turnaround (including its ‘Express Same Day’ service) whilst keeping its prices down to ensure exceptional value for all its customers. It is for this reason that generation after generation of families use the business and why customers come from as far afield as Nottingham, Cambridge, Derby and London. The variety of items cleaned is also surprising; everything from bedding to beaded ball dresses; upholstered chairs to Ugg boots and trousers to table cloths. If it’s fabric, portable and can be cleaned, Peters’ Cleaners should be your destination. St Peter’s Cleaners were recently announced as finalists for the Mercury Business Awards 2018 in 2 categories: Best Independent Retailer and Best Customer Care. Stamford Property Values 7.7% higher than year ago This month, our local property market advisor and owner of UPP Property, David Crooke, analyses the Stamford property market and its future.
I
T’S been nearly 18 months since Sajid Javid, the Conservative Housing Minister published The White Paper “Fixing the Broken UK Housing Market”; meanwhile Stamford property values continue to rise at 7.7% (year on year for the council area) and the number of new homes being constructed locally remain slow, creating a potential perfect storm for those looking to buy and sell. The White Paper is important as it will ensure we have long-term stability and longevity in the property market as a whole. Stamford homeowners and landlords need to be aware of these issues in the report to ensure they don’t lose out and ensure the local housing market is fit for purpose. The White Paper wanted more homes to be built in the next couple of decades, so it might seem counter-intuitive for existing property owners to encourage more homes to be built and a change in the direction of housing provision – as this may have a negative effect on their own property. Yet the country needs a diversified and fluid property market to allow the economy as a whole to grow and flourish, which in turn will be a greater influence on whether prices increase or decrease in the long term. The first of the four points raised was to give local authorities
powers to speed up house building and ensure developers complete new homes on time. Secondly, statutory methods demanded local authorities and builders build at higher densities (i.e. more houses per hectare) where appropriate. The other two points were incentives for smaller builders to take a larger share of the new homes market and help for people renting. Looking at data from the local government’s association in South Kesteven, the council is below the regional average, only spending £23.33 per person, compared the regional average of £32.05 per head – which will mean the planning department will be hard pressed to meet those targets. Also, 87% of planning applications are decided within the statutory 8-week initial period, below the regional average of 89%. I would agree with the government’s ambition to make more efficient use of land and avoid building homes at low densities where there is a shortage of land for meeting identified housing needs, ensuring that the density and form of development reflect the character, accessibility and infrastructure. It’s all very good building lots of houses, but we need the infrastructure to go with it. Talking to local homeowners their biggest fear of all this building is a lack of infrastructure for those extra houses (the extra roads, doctors’ surgeries, schools etc.). I know most want more houses to be built to house their family and friends, but irrespective of the density it’s the infrastructure that goes with the housing that is just as important. Children who attend Wildcats classes get to perform in two shows per year as well as other events and opportunities. Coming to class each week develops skills but also builds confidence in everyday life, not just performing! To enroll your child or find out more about the #wildcatsfamily go to www.wildcatstheatreschool.co.uk or call 01780 762000. “What we hadn’t truly appreciated at the time of enrolling George into Wildcats was the amazing friendships he quickly built with the children and teachers who share his passions and encourage each other at every step.” Heidi and John Cassidy - Parents to George. “I absolutely love going to Wildcats. I have made lots of new friends and learnt so many new skills. I used to be too shy to perform in front of people, but my confidence has grown so much and now I love performing on stage.” Freya Giles, Age 9.
VERY year thousands of people across the region choose to pop loose change into charity collection boxes in pubs, shops and community hubs rather than weigh down purses and pockets. What might only be a few pennies to each individual adds up for the charity. Sue Ryder Thorpe Hall Hospice in Peterborough receives, on average, £706 every month from collection tins. That’s enough to pay for a hospice nurse for more than five days. But the hospice needs help – in the shape of Blue Tin Heroes – to round up tins, deliver them to Thorpe Hall in Longthorpe and to distribute empty tins around the region. Community fundraising officer Sharon Baker has the task of co-ordinating Sue Ryder Thorpe Hall Hospice collection tins. She said: “We are really grateful to all the venues across the region which have one of our collection tins – the contents really do add up to make a difference here at Thorpe Hall. Now we need volunteers who are willing to use their community connections and knowledge to pick up full tins, distribute empty ones to venues which already support us and identify places which might like to have one of our collection tins at the till, on the counter or on the bar.” Husband and wife Elaine and John Rignall have already signed up as Blue Tin Heroes covering the area near their home in Stanground, Peterborough. Elaine said: “John and I are often out visiting friends and going places so it’s no bother for us to stop off on the way and pick up a couple of collection tins and give out some empty ones. It’s our way of doing something to help our local hospice.” The team at Thorpe Hall Hospice are particularly seeking Blue Tin Heroes in Stamford, Market Deeping and the surrounding villages and would love your help. To find out more about becoming a Blue Tin Hero please call 01733 225999 or email Thorpe. fundraising@sueryder.org • Academic Diaries – from £4.79 (usually from £5.99) • Bic 4 Colour Pen - £2.39 (usually £2.99) • Winsor & Newton Cotman Watercolour Sets – Student Specials – from £10.99 • Helix Special Edition Maths Sets - £5.59 (usually £6.99) • Lamy Cartridge Pens - £15.12 (usually £18.90) • Name Tape Kit - £1.99 (usually £2.49) • Pencil Cases – from £2.39 (usually £2.99) • Drink Carton Pencil Cases – from £5.59 (usually £6.99) • Pukka Project Books – A4 - £3.99 (usually £4.99), A5 £3.19 (usually £3.99) • Sharpie 24 Pen Set - £15.99 (usually £19.99) • USB 16Gb Memory Stick – Student Special - £9.99

From treading the boards to going feet first into the beauty business, Louise Goss interviews Annette FoleyCraigen about the ‘vital part of the anatomy’ we often ignore.
Annette Foley-Craigen W
HEN I met Annette FoleyCraigen it was the first time anyone has shown me their feet during an interview. But Annette does have very lovely feet, something which should come as no surprise as the Managing Director of B-Line Health and Beauty and the woman almost solely responsible for raising the profile of foot care in the professional beauty industry. She is what one would describe as ‘a character’; a lively, sparky personality with many a tale to tell at the age of 77 and who has played many a character herself after starting out in the world of theatre, studying at the prestigious Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama. (She’s even met one of her fellow alumni, Sir Anthony Hopkins.) As an actress, Annette always built her characters from the feet upwards. She stands to show me that with feet as her foundation, they become the foundation to a character. “You automatically move, you build the body and it alters, depending on what part you’re playing,” she explains. Today, feet remain core to her business. She entered the beauty industry almost by accident when as a glamorous young actress, working “any job to pay the rent” in London, she was asked to do some promotional work for Estée Lauder. Later she moved to Clarins and after years in various sales and marketing roles, Annette decided to branch out on her own. “I decided if I was going to work that hard for them, I could work that hard for myself,” she says laughing. She decided to focus on an area of the body which was not being covered by the big companies. “I thought I’ll do something different. Instead of starting from the face down, I’ll start from the feet up,” she says. “I thought, and still believe, that feet are a vital part of the anatomy, which is totally and sadly neglected.” Annette and her late husband were renovating the beautiful Harrowby Hall near Grantham from where B-Line Health and Beauty launched in 1989. “B stands for Best, British and Beauty,” she tells me. She began her research, developed three unique products, gave lectures on foot care and was described as a ‘foot guru’ and ‘sole sister’ writing for top industry publications. “Everyone hated feet,” she says. “Women would often say, ‘oh I can’t stand my feet’ and therapists hated doing feet because products weren’t nice.” At a time when foot care was medical, functional, corns and hard-skin, Annette was innovating, discovering the perfect blend of tea tree and lavender oils for a more functional but beautiful product line. “I wanted [the products] to be plant orientated and I wanted to use natural products,” she says. “Tea tree was absolutely right because it’s antiviral, antiseptic, just right for the

feet. The lavender was healing, soothing, cooling with a lovely fragrance.” B-Line’s first major customer was luxury spa, Ragdale Hall. “We are still with them and we are very proud of that,” says Annette. After years performing on the stage and experiencing tired and aching feet, Annette recognises the importance of looking after them. “I wasn’t motivated by money,” she says. “I loved the whole process and feel proud to have made a contribution to feet and foot care. It broadened my horizons. I travelled and lectured. I actually do believe, in our pioneering days, we made a big difference to the way people feel about feet.” Annette continues to be a pioneer and innovator, still bucking the trend well into her seventies. B-Line was applauded by environmentalists for removing plastic
microbeads from its exfoliating product in 2015, when many beauty brands were simply talking about doing it. They became the first independent British company to replace the plastic with bamboo, which, along with its sustainability, Annette says reflects her natural, plant-based ethos. They have also begun moving from plastic to aluminium bottles. Around the room at Harrowby Hall I glimpse several pairs of decorative shoes, placed as ornaments. “I’m a shoe addict,” admits Annette. “I’ll never tell women not to wear high heels.
