Picture of the month

Burghley Park is delightful at any time of year, but especially in the winter with the deer. A favourite time for me is just after Christmas, watching all the bicycle-with-stabilisers Christmas gifts being tried out for the first time along the tarmac - a big wobble becoming a little wobble and then, hey presto, perfection! And when you’ve completed your constitutional, why not pop in to the Orangery Restaurant for a hot chocolate and slice of cake. It’s open Wed-Sun 10am to 4pm until 17th December. THE RUTLAND WATCH M U LT U M I N PA RVO

Loomes & Co has launched a new wristwatch in time for Christmas and it’s called the Rutland. Building on the success of earlier watch designs, Loomes wanted to create a classic manual wind mechanical wristwatch. Deceptively simple in design, the watch completely encapsulates Rutland’s motto, Multum in Parvo “Much in Little” – a lot in a small space. Over 150 components go into the making of each watch and each carries a three-year guarantee. Housed in the Loomes classic stainless steel case, the dials are produced in Stamford and available with either duck egg blue or ivory silk dials.

A Dream Project Rutland couple Richard and Liz Dixon are veterans of many renovation and extension projects but had always harboured a dream to take on a self-build project. When the opportunity came they snapped up the perfect plot in Ketton to finally make their dream come true. Amander Meade visited to see the results of their venture. PHOTOGRAPHY: ELLI DEAN

HEN Richard Dixon stepped into semi-retirement from his senior banking role, he finally had the time to collaborate with his wife Liz on their ambition to build a home from scratch. Originally from Rutland, Richard and Liz were alerted to the ideal plot by Richard’s father who lives in Ketton. “The plot on which our current home stands was for sale along with the bungalow next door. From the beginning we knew we would build a brand new bungalow on the plot which already had planning permission but first we fully renovated and extended the existing building which provided us with a very convenient place to live and from which to project manage the new build,” explains Richard. After the purchase, the couple spent seven months remodelling the interior of the bungalow whilst planning the layout of the home they planned to build next door. Once happy with their plans, Stamford architectural consultant John Hartley formalised their ideas and work could begin. With duties divided clearly between them, Richard spent every day on site with Liz turning her attention to logistics, research and the interior design. Spotting a stone new build they admired in Stamford, Richard approached its builder, Dale Harrison and recruited him to create the shell of their new home with Richard’s brother Michael drafted in to install the roof. Plasterers and a plumber were gradually brought on board and selected by personal recommendation. The Dixons were particularly impressed by electrician Kalv Jasser of the Glowbolt Group who Richard describes as “one of the most professional people we dealt with through the whole project. He really added to the finished home, not just with the obvious lighting features, but also things like the home networking - even 20

STAMFORD LIVING DECEMBER 2017

the Sky engineer said it was one of the best networks he’d ever seen.” With the shell and roof complete, Richard and Liz took over, completing first and second fix joinery, installing the bathrooms and all the wall tiling (floor tiling was done by Lee Bush). Richard learned how to install coving and hang doors and the couple even collaborated on installing their own kitchen which is an impressive contemporary design, incorporating an open plan dining area. Richard credits his friend Johnny Wilkinson with being an extremely useful extra pair of hands throughout the trickier installations. “The project was undoubtedly exciting and very rewarding but there is no doubt it was hard, hard work with plenty of frustrating moments along the way,” remembers Liz. “We enjoyed it immensely and were thrilled with the amount of support we had from neighbours in the village who were as fascinated by the project as we were,” she adds. Clipsham stone provided by the Clipsham Stone Cutting Company was the building material of choice – “We wanted to create a building in keeping with the locality and also support a great local business,” says Richard. The company also provided a beautiful fireplace for the living room and all the exterior architecture too. Fifty one weeks later, the build was complete and the couple moved in last summer with Richard’s father happily installed in the original renovated bungalow next door. Liz has chosen restful, pale colours from a neutral palette and made the most of the plentiful natural light. The layout is easy to navigate and the décor flows from room to room creating a relaxed atmosphere throughout. “We do have the desire to find another project at some point in the future, but for now we are happy to have a rest from building and enjoy our first family Christmas in our new home.”

“I’m proud to say we never used a skip on site throughout the whole build – we made sure absolutely every piece of packaging or rubbish was recycled.” (Richard)

N preparation for a weekend of drinks and parties, Aimee popped along to see tanning expert Wendy at The Tanning Lodge. Wendy explains “The benefits of coming to see me at The Tanning Lodge are that it’s completely private. You can come in your loose clothing or even your dressing gown if you wish, without having to get fully dressed afterwards, just jump in your car. The reason I chose to use Skinny Tan is because it is the only tanning product that combines natural tanning actives and skin smoothing ingredients which tan and contour the skin, reducing the visible appearance of cellulite”.

Next on the list was a visit to Francesca Alexander on Ironmonger Street to have her hair and nails done. The difference between doing your hair yourself watching a YouTube tutorial (apart from the achy arms and countless attempts) is that a professional salon takes time prepping your hair for the updo. It’s a bit like laying foundations when building a house. The structure they achieve by taking each piece and skilfully styling it makes sure it holds and is super glossy. Her session started with a hair wash with Bumble and bumble invisible oil shampoo and conditioner. It contains 6 feather-light oils ideal for hair that needs serious nourishment without feeling weighed down. It was then on to a Signature Bumble and bumble blow dry; with great precision Francesca took sections of hair blow dried and pinned them to give volume at the root. Ashley took over for the updo, she simply braided one side of Aimee’s hair and gently pulled it out for a softer look. She then effortlessly positioned sections of immaculately backcombed hair into place at the nape of her neck.... a large sweeping fringe to finish and ta-da!!! Meanwhile Kimberley was busy filing, buffing, shaping and painting Aimee’s nails. The brand-new collection of Artistic Colour gloss gel had landed at the salon that morning. Kimberley chose the very trendy

colour Heart of Chrome to match Aimee’s outfit from Energy. The London-based brand are modern and have very unusual shades.

To convert your make-up, look from day to night my top tip is to stick with the colours you wear usually day-to-day. Simply change the finish from a matte/satin to a high gloss or metallic for a party look. For Aimee I took her favourite copper eyeshadow in a supershiny finish and applied it all over the lid to just above the natural crease. It made her blue eyes even brighter! I also applied it underneath the eye very close to the lash line for definition and blended it well. Using a black eyeliner pencil smudge in the waterline, apply plenty of mascara and some eyelashes (if you’re confident doing so). To finish, apply a generous amount of blusher with sparkle to the cheeks and a touch to the nose for a wintery glow, a slick of your favourite gloss and your good to go! What Aimee had to say: “The tan itself went on evenly and smelt of heavenly coconut, it developed over eight hours and the result was a very even, natural looking tan. I thoroughly enjoyed my make-over with Rebecca and the wonderful ladies at Francesca Alexandra. I was thrilled with the result! A liTtlE DOing We cannot wait for Santa’s visit to Sacrewell Farm, Thornhaugh, this year. Freya is a huge animallover and so a chance to meet and receive a present from Father Christmas as well as feed the goats and pet the rabbits is a dream come true! This month Christmas crafts, elf visits, and marshmallow toasting add a little extra magic to the day while the children explore the farm. If it gets a bit cold or damp there is the fantastic indoor play barn and if not, there are numerous wildlife trails and the tractor rides, which put a big smile on Toby’s face, as does Jolly Jules the donkey! You can finish the visit with a bite to eat in the café or make the most of stocking up on the array of toys, which make ideal gifts, from the shop. Christmas at Sacrewell kicks off with their first Christmas Market on 2-3 December and there is even the chance to have breakfast with Santa on 9-10 December. Delivering the Mail to Stamford Sue Lee and Jean Orpin look at the changing roles of the Post Master and the Post Office in Stamford.

TAMFORD was on a postal route long before the General Post Office was set up by Charles II. Initially this was for government surveillance of political letters but attempts to break the royal monopoly failed and the right to oversee mail and get the profits from its distribution was established. In the 18C there were receiving houses across the country. The mail was managed by Post Masters appointed by the GPO and long-distance deliveries were by Post-Boys on horseback. This was wide open to fraudulent dealings between Post-Boys and highway robbers: it was also slow. In 1784 John Palmer, a theatre manager from Bath, persuaded the government that Mail Coaches would be more efficient.

Mail by Coach Given its location on the Great North Road it is not surprising that Stamford soon became an important stopping place for the new Mail Coaches. Francis Freeling Secretary of the GPO, posted an advertisement in the Stamford Mercury. “November 2d 1786 The bags of Letters from London and the Places intermediate, with their Branches, will, for the first Time, be brought by the Mail Coach on Tuesday Morning, the 7th Instant. The bags of Letters from York and the Places to the North of Stamford, with their Branches, will, for the first Time, be brought by the Mail Coach on Tuesday Afternoon, the 7th Instant.” This daily service would arrive from London between 7am and 8am and the coach from the north at about 4pm. Letters for the North had to be taken to the Post Office before 10pm the previous evening and letters for the south before 3.30pm. These coaches were light, horses were changed every few miles, the mail was carried in a locked box and an outside guard in scarlet livery was on board. He would sound a horn as the coach approached tolls and settlements. The speed and safety of the mail was greatly improved. It is easy to imagine the excitement of first arrival down St Martin’s but it was not long before it became a regular occurrence. Within a few years there were Mail Coaches travelling through Stamford to Leeds, Carlisle, Oxford, Cambridge and Leicester and later to Yarmouth. Stamford’s Post Master had a busy job receiving letters, sorting and delivering them to the coaches then collecting and distributing in the town. Up to the mid-1830s there were several Mail Coaches going through Stamford with letters reaching London in 12 hours. 48

Mail by Train In 1841 the General Post Master wrote to Stamford Town Council in connection with the imminent demise of the Mail Coach from London to York and Edinburgh. He couldn’t find a contractor to run the coach. Changes were made to the timings of the ‘Rockingham’ coach (London to Leeds) and the Leicester coach so that mailbags were not held up at Stamford; however, the railway network, spreading like wildfire across the country, was set to transform the distribution of mail. Railway companies were already obliged to carry mailbags and sorting was also already taking place on moving trains. The introduction of the ‘Penny Post’ (also in 1841) saw a vast increase in the volume of mail. When Stamford was linked to the Midland Railway in Peterborough in the late 1840s mailbags were no longer taken by coach but delivered to the station. In 1856 the Stamford to Essendine line was opened giving a link to the Great Northern Railway and the main route to London and the north. The mail train immortalised by W H Auden in his poem ‘Night Mail’ had become the chief means of transport.

Post Offices Post Office buildings have changed considerably since the first ones were opened often in just a room. In Stamford in 1849 William Newcomb, a cousin of Richard Newcomb owner of the Stamford Mercury, was appointed Postmaster. Initially he ran the post office with the family printing business in Ironmonger Street, then moved to the Gothic House (now Walkers) and ran the printing business and post office from there. By 1866 he was replaced and the post office moved to 4 Red Lion Street. The Mercury reported on November 30th, “The removal of the Post Office from the High Street to Red Lion Street is much complained of, the new site being considered very inconvenient.” In 1867 it moved again to 34 St Mary’s Street then in 1874 it moved to 4 Red Lion Square (now Clarks’).

The New Post Office In 1890 there was the first national postal strike due to poor working conditions. The postmen had no place to go between deliveries and conditions for other workers were primitive. Around the country improvements were made and in 1891 the Postmaster General advertised for land to build a new post office in Stamford. They were offered land in All Saints’ Place by Major Hart, close to the Great North Road. The new Post Office was designed by a London architect and built by Bowmans. It opened in 1895 and accommodation was provided for the Postmaster, letter carriers, sorters, clerks, telegraphists and linesmen. The public room was at the west end and adjoining was the Postmaster’s room. At the east end a passage led to the sorting office with a kitchen for the letter carriers at the back. There was also accommodation for the clerks’ kitchen and a room for telegraphists. On the first floor there was an instrument room, a kitchen for the telegraph boys and a linesmen’s room. On the top floor there was an apartment for the caretaker. The building was lit by gas and there were cellars for coal. Hot and cold water was installed in all kitchens and all the rooms were heated.

Running the Post Office The telegraph office was open from 8am to 8pm. Telegrams were first introduced in 1875 and were delivered by telegraph boys who were not always a welcome sight as they brought bad news as well as good. Stamford post office was open from 7am to 9pm every day except for Sunday when it opened from 8am to 10am. One year there were so many Valentine cards that the staff returned to the post office at 3am on Feb 13th to ensure that the cards were delivered on time! There were three deliveries per day (and on Sunday, Christmas Day and Good Friday one delivery until 1963!). In 1912 the post office introduced the telephone service. The Midland Bank (now HSBC) was Stamford 1, Burghley Estate Stamford 2.

CHRISTMAS CARDS The Post Office has changed considerably but one custom started by the post office is still with us today and has grown in popularity. Henry Cole had helped to introduce the Penny Post in 1840 and launched the first Christmas card in 1843. These were luxury items costing a shilling each. Cards were even cheaper as they could be sent unsealed for ½d. In the 1860’s printing became cheaper and as celebrating Christmas became fashionable, cards were produced in large numbers. Pictures of holly and ivy, flowers and images of Spring were popular; only a few had a Christian theme. In late Victorian times robins and snow scenes became popular, as postman became known as Robins because of their red waistcoats.

POST EARLY Despite email it is still a tradition to send cards at Christmas. 75% of people prefer to receive a card by post. Since the 1930s the Post Office have urged people to post early, the longest running campaign by the Post Office. Noted artists and designers, for example Graham Sutherland, have been commissioned to produce posters.

Collections Post boxes were introduced in 1852 by Anthony Trollope who was working as a Surveyors’ clerk for the Post Office. There are still four Victorian letter boxes in Stamford. Letters were collected from the central post boxes five times a day. Seven postmen served the outlying villages. Joseph Charity delivered post to Casterton, Pickworth and Tolethorpe. His round was 17 miles. He travelled 150,000 miles in his thirty years and was awarded the Imperial Service medal by the king in 1928.

Splendid mansions dressed for Christmas DODDINGTON HALL, DODDINGTON, LINCOLN LN6 4RU Barely an hour north of Stamford, Doddington Hall is an unspoiled gem of a place that lets its personality shine out at Christmas. Claire Birch inherited the Hall and its estate in 2006 and with her husband, has worked to further its upkeep with imagination and ambition. The result, she says is “very Doddington”. The displays and ornaments are lovingly sourced from the gardens or built by the staff. Rachel Petheram of Catkin Flowers, who grows her flowers in Doddingtons wonderful walled garden, cuts and dries flower heads throughout the year and foliage is foraged from the estate. The Hall has developed a relationship with lighting and production designer Howell Thomas and provides a unique opportunity for his students from Lincoln College’s production arts course to get involved in a live project. They have traditionally produced some magical pieces for the Long Gallery. Each room tells a different story – this year visitors can expect to meet the Queen and King of Hearts and to see Time on the run. Wonderland will weave its way into the very fabric of the house – think giant mushrooms, floating clocks, frozen forests, tented rooms and … well, go and see for yourselves. Second Helpings at Christmas

Since opening its doors just over two years ago, Second Helpings has fed nearly 5,500 people and intercepted around 20,000kg of food destined for landfill. It is estimated that a shocking £4m worth of food waste will go into landfill each year from the households of Stamford alone! This inspirational little café is now gearing up for a busy Christmas period; in 2016 the team of volunteers fed 60 people on Christmas Eve and a further 65 people on Christmas Day. George Hetherington, one of the project leaders reckons this year they may feed up to 100 people. He says, “our guests come from all walks of life; we have wealthy people sitting alongside those in poverty, homeless people, those who hate waste, families, those who just like good food, and those who are lonely and need some company.” The store cupboards at Second Helpings are kept full thanks to some of the town’s supermarkets and bakeries, along with unwanted produce from local farms. Due to the vast quantity of food now being collected by volunteers each week, they often have a surplus of food. In order to recycle it all, a Food Boutique has been established - running alongside the café on a Saturday, and also open on Fridays. The same ethos as the café applies - everything bought in the Food Boutique is on a ‘Pay as You Feel’ basis, nothing has a price tag, so those who can afford to pay do, and those who cannot afford to pay, do not. George Hetherington believes the numbers attending the Second Helpings Café have increased due to the current economic conditions we are experiencing in the UK. Those seeking help via the Food Bank and Citizens Advice Bureau are now often referred to Second Helpings for food. There are many ways people can volunteer. George goes on to say, “our greatest need at the moment is for qualified chefs. This is a challenging role, as we often have no idea what ingredients will be available to cook with, until the Friday afternoon. Stamford local, Craig Lyons, took over The Spice Market stall in July this year, and can be found every Friday on the Stamford market in Broad Street. Place all the ingredients, except the spiced rum, in a pan and slowly bring to a boil. Turn down the heat and simmer for 2530 minutes. Pull off the heat and add a good slug of Spiced Rum to taste. Serve in tall glasses garnished with a cinnamon stick and a chunk of orange studded with cloves.

This sell-out dinner was much anticipated by all, as owner and chef Chris Hand only runs these special events with a six-course tasting menu and wine flight once every season. The evening started with a chilled glass of Prosecco and a convivial atmosphere. Our amuse-bouche was a beetroot borscht, a traditional Polish soup, served in an espresso cup with a hint of vodka and crème fraîche. It had a sweet and earthy taste that was a perfect palate warmer. Following was a rocket and ricotta raviolo with grilled radicchio and a white wine sauce, which all paired well with the crisp, zesty Eric Louis Sancerre 2016. Our third dish – a sweet-tasting poached brill with girolles, with nutty and peppery notes – was our absolute favourite. The fullflavoured sauce of fish stock, chicken jus and a slight hint of lemon juice packed a punch to our taste buds. Chris continued to delight us all with the main dish of a medallion loin of pink venison accompanied

by a “Crown Prince”– a mini venison shepherd’s pie, with a rich venison jus that encapsulated all the flavours of autumn. The quarters of quince on the side added a tangy bite to each mouthful. The dish was paired with a Kim Crawford Pinot Noir, but we opted to stick to a fabulous English Pinot Blanc from the Stopham Estate. The two desserts were fabulous too, but you will have to go to prove that for yourself…whenever you go, you are guaranteed an interesting menu to choose from. There were so many rumours circulating Stamford when The Periwig closed, I’m guilty of sharing a few myself. “I’ve heard that it’s being turned into hotel rooms for The Crown, with a wine bar at the bottom,” I quite confidently said, and believed myself too. I had pictured a sort of private wine club, with irritated guests in the bedrooms above slamming their hand on the floor, asking people to be quiet. What a relief it was to find that all three floors of The Periwig have been transformed into Paten & Co, Knead Pub’s latest masterpiece, which opened in November. For people who knew and loved The Periwig, you’ll recognise the structure but the whole feel of the place is totally different. I had my fair share of nights up on that crowded dance floor. Where the little DJ booth once stood alongside a well-used dance pole, you’ll now find the kitchen where most of the food is cooked in a fancy little charcoal oven. The pole is still there somewhere, but you’ll have to see for yourself if you can spot it. News & Notes Malcolm Sargent Catchment Area Properties Outperform Stamford Average By 33% This month, local property advisor David Crooke, owner of UPP Property Agents looks at the positive impact and influence a great primary school has on house prices

NECDOTALLY, I have always known that a good school creates good demand, and good demand affects house prices. As I like a challenge, I decided to look at the science behind these assumptions, so I ran a report using our database of house hunters and relocating families. The results confirm there is a close correlation between the high demand areas of Stamford and the close proximity to a good primary school, and many people will increase their budget quite significantly whilst others would consider downgrading their property requirements to be close to a good primary school. According to the SchoolGuide website, Malcolm Sargent Primary School is one of the best primary schools in Stamford. Its figures are certainly impressive; their last Ofsted Report classified it as ‘Good’, a score of 105 on reading and Maths 106 (National Average 99.4 and 99.6 respectively) at Key Stage 2. Looking at property sales within half a mile of Malcolm Sargent (the core of the catchment area), property values have risen in value since 2000 by 222.6%, whilst according the Land Registry, the Stamford average as a whole has risen in the same time frame by 167.1%. That means the parents of Malcolm Sargent have seen the values of their properties rise proportionally 33.2% more than the Stamford average... interesting don’t you think? However, whilst a good primary school significantly contributes more to house prices, the same can’t be said for secondary schools. There are two reasons for this; firstly, as secondary schools are much larger their catchment areas are correspondingly much larger, meaning parents don’t need to live so close to the school. Secondly in the UK, whilst the difference between the top 25% and bottom 25% of secondary schools is not insignificant, in the primary school sector, the difference between the top 25% and bottom 25% is, according to the London School of Economics, considerably and significantly more. Anyone can have the luxury of a wood burning stove Georgie Fenn catches up with our local experts at Alfred Poppins to chat about the luxury of warmth this winter

’M currently sat on my sofa, in Ketton, with a border terrier under one arm and a sausage dog under the other. My wood burner is chucking out some serious heat; my dad calls it the little puffer. I spent the weekend preparing wood, dad said his father used to tell him wood will keep you warm three times; when you chop down the tree, when you split it into logs and when you light the fire, isn’t that simply wholesome. With the fire going, I never put on the heating which sometimes means traipsing up to a freezing cold room with just a hot water bottle and two doggies for warmth, but it’s far more satisfying that any heated room could ever be. People think wood burners and stoves are just for country homes, but they couldn’t be more wrong. I’ve been chatting to Wayne from Alfred Poppins who you’ll find at West Street, Stamford, and he tells me it only takes around two days to install a wood burner or stove…even if you don’t currently have a chimney, anyone can have one. Wayne explains that he ‘fell into’ the wood burner industry, not in a Santa like fashion but through his chimney sweeping trade. “I was seeing badly fitted wood burners, and I thought I could do a better job of that myself, so I set up my own company,” says Wayne, who has done exactly what he aimed to, alongside his wife Helen. Their company, Alfred Poppins, not only sells favourite brands including Woodwarm stoves, Home & Country stoves, Parkray, Hunter and many more, but they also fit, offer advice, and clean and line chimneys. I’m guilty of skipping a chimney sweep or two each year so I asked Wayne why it’s so important to keep on top of these sorts of things. It essentially comes down to safety; blockages could cause a chimney fire and when it’s only around £50 a year for a service, it’s really not worth the risk. Wayne is also a member of The National Association of Chimney Sweeps and HETAS registered which is something home insurance companies often look for from regular chimney sweeps. Excellence Abounds at the Stamford Endowed Schools

N September 2017, Stamford High School, Stamford School and Stamford Junior School (including Stamford Nursery School) were inspected by the Independent Schools Inspectorate (ISI), the body approved by the Government for the inspection of independent schools. Three different teams of inspectors visited the Schools concurrently to assess the quality of pupils’ academic and other achievements and the quality of pupils’ personal development and regulatory compliance. The overall findings were outstanding. The Schools were rated as ‘Excellent’ (the highest level of achievement) in five out of six reports and ‘Good’ (the second highest level of achievement) in one report. The Schools were fully compliant with ISI regulations, which included a thorough assessment of pastoral, health and safety, staff recruitment, medical and boarding policies and procedures, as well as, its overall estate. Academic achievement was recognised across the board along with ILIC (independent learning and intellectual curiosity) and the benefits of the Stamford co-curricular offering together with the outstanding pastoral care. Many of the inspectors’ comments show that Stamfordian Spirit is strongly in evidence in our pupils with numerous comments made about hard work, resilience, ambition, awareness of others and kindness. OU may regularly walk or drive past a particular square of pastureland called Torpel Manor Field just outside Helpston. If you have noticed a mysterious collection of lumps and bumps that buck the characteristically flat landscape you may not have thought anything of it. This book will make you look twice at the area, which was once a significant medieval manor and settlement. The site is preserved as a Scheduled Ancient Monument, but until Hunting in a deer park. Sponsor a Slate Campaign launched to secure remaining funding for essential roof repairs

UNDAY 15th October saw users of the All Saints’ and St John’s Centre, Scotgate, Stamford get together to launch a new campaign to help secure the remaining funding required for its Phase 1 essential repairs to the South Elevation Roof. Used by over 20 groups a week including over 300 children and 50 adults, the Centre is an essential community hub for a wide range of educational and social activities across the town and beyond. The Foodbank uses the Centre as its storage, distribution and welcoming place, and it is the Trustees’ intention to expand its use to allow other groups to meet so they can help with dementia and mental health issues in the town. In 2015 the trustees of the Centre embarked on an essential fundraising journey to secure the future of the building as a meeting facility for the whole community through the improvement and development of the existing facilities. Since that time, they have successfully secured over £25,000 in grant funding and benefits in kind. With a total repair cost of almost £40,000, the Trustees are now on a final push to secure the remaining £15,000 for these essential repairs. Whilst longer term the centre is looking at further re-development to improve existing facilities, the priority is to repair the main roof to ensure that it is weatherproof. As a key building in the Conservation Area the Trustees are committed to maintaining the character of the building by ensuring that the repairs are undertaken in local materials, mainly Collyweston Slate. Jean Asher and Eileen Bangay, from Stamford Foodbank commented – “The Centre is an essential central base enabling us to feed over 1000 families a year. The trustees are working hard to secure essential repairs and make the centre viable for the future, some of which are already coming into fruition. We hope that the community can continue to support this important cause.” Adrian Worgan, Chair of Stamford Amateur Musical Society, commented “the Centre provides us with cost-effective/usable space to prepare for the many shows we put on for the benefit of the community during the year, including our next show “Company” which opens on 9th November.
