Picture of the month
Burghley Park is delightful at any time of year, but especially in the winter with the deer. A favourite time for me is just after Christmas, watching all the bicycle-with-stabilisers Christmas gifts being tried out for the first time along the tarmac - a big wobble becoming a little wobble and then, hey presto, perfection! And when you’ve completed your constitutional, why not pop in to the Orangery Restaurant for a hot chocolate and slice of cake. It’s open Wed-Sun 10am to 4pm until 17th December. Or maybe try out a Burghley concert: There’s the traditional Christmas Chapel Concert on 10th Dec (£25, including mince pies and mulled wine); or Christmas Carols in the Great Hall on 13th Dec (£20 adults, £10 child, including pre-drink). See www.burghley.co.uk for more details. Best wishes for the Festive Season! Nicholas Rudd-Jones, Editor Photo by Kingsley Singleton, www.kingsleysingleton.com

Get the look: Decadent Christmas Décor PHOTOGRAPHY: ELLI DEAN
SIMPLE IDEAS TO TRY
• Try to understand what the light is doing in your home – light can change some colours completely. If you need to, update your Christmas lights so that you can only use white lights. • Go for quality over price; quality is timeless, cheap items age very quickly • Rotate decorations and accessories when you go off them. Things go in and out of style, so what you loved as a child might turn out to be next year’s hottest trend! • Arrange rosemary, white cyclamen and white daffodils around your home • Make a quirky statement with a gold stag’s head on a dark wall
This year, create a sense of opulence and luxury with your Christmas décor. Think big and bold; use rich, dark colours punctuated with decadent gold and dusky pink highlights, peacock feathers and splashes of white. Admire it all from the comfort of your sofa, snuggled up in sumptuous blankets in emerald greens, midnight blues and deep teals. You don’t need to spend a fortune on brand new decorations; simply combine your ‘old favourites’ with some natural elements (fir cones, sprigs of foliage and feathers) and arrange with complementary lighting. Read on for more tips on how to achieve this luxurious Christmas look. Rannveig Stone 16

Trim the tree Add drama to your décor with a peacock feather wreath, sprigs of white foliage, feather baubles and oversized decorations on the tree. The decorations used are from a wide selection available from some of my favourite haunts in Stamford, namely; You Living, Sack Store, Chez Soi, Nook and The Cook Shop.
Dress up the fireplace While the Christmas tree is the obvious festive focal point, decorating a mantel in a subtle, understated style can add a new dimension to the room.

IN TIME FOR CHRISTMAS
THE RUTLAND WATCH M U LT U M I N PA RVO
Loomes & Co has launched a new wristwatch in time for Christmas and it’s called the Rutland. Building on the success of earlier watch designs, Loomes wanted to create a classic manual wind mechanical wristwatch. Deceptively simple in design, the watch completely encapsulates Rutland’s motto, Multum in Parvo “Much in Little” – a lot in a small space. Over 150 components go into the making of each watch and each carries a three-year guarantee. Housed in the Loomes classic stainless steel case, the dials are produced in Stamford and available with either duck egg blue or ivory silk dials.

A Dream Project Rutland couple Richard and Liz Dixon are veterans of many renovation and extension projects but had always harboured a dream to take on a self-build project. When the opportunity came they snapped up the perfect plot in Ketton to finally make their dream come true. Amander Meade visited to see the results of their venture. PHOTOGRAPHY: ELLI DEAN
W
HEN Richard Dixon stepped into semi-retirement from his senior banking role, he finally had the time to collaborate with his wife Liz on their ambition to build a home from scratch. Originally from Rutland, Richard and Liz were alerted to the ideal plot by Richard’s father who lives in Ketton. “The plot on which our current home stands was for sale along with the bungalow next door. From the beginning we knew we would build a brand new bungalow on the plot which already had planning permission but first we fully renovated and extended the existing building which provided us with a very convenient place to live and from which to project manage the new build,” explains Richard. After the purchase, the couple spent seven months remodelling the interior of the bungalow whilst planning the layout of the home they planned to build next door. Once happy with their plans, Stamford architectural consultant John Hartley formalised their ideas and work could begin. With duties divided clearly between them, Richard spent every day on site with Liz turning her attention to logistics, research and the interior design. Spotting a stone new build they admired in Stamford, Richard approached its builder, Dale Harrison and recruited him to create the shell of their new home with Richard’s brother Michael drafted in to install the roof. Plasterers and a plumber were gradually brought on board and selected by personal recommendation. The Dixons were particularly impressed by electrician Kalv Jasser of the Glowbolt Group who Richard describes as “one of the most professional people we dealt with through the whole project. He really added to the finished home, not just with the obvious lighting features, but also things like the home networking - even 20
STAMFORD LIVING DECEMBER 2017
the Sky engineer said it was one of the best networks he’d ever seen.” With the shell and roof complete, Richard and Liz took over, completing first and second fix joinery, installing the bathrooms and all the wall tiling (floor tiling was done by Lee Bush). Richard learned how to install coving and hang doors and the couple even collaborated on installing their own kitchen which is an impressive contemporary design, incorporating an open plan dining area. Richard credits his friend Johnny Wilkinson with being an extremely useful extra pair of hands throughout the trickier installations. “The project was undoubtedly exciting and very rewarding but there is no doubt it was hard, hard work with plenty of frustrating moments along the way,” remembers Liz. “We enjoyed it immensely and were thrilled with the amount of support we had from neighbours in the village who were as fascinated by the project as we were,” she adds. Clipsham stone provided by the Clipsham Stone Cutting Company was the building material of choice – “We wanted to create a building in keeping with the locality and also support a great local business,” says Richard. The company also provided a beautiful fireplace for the living room and all the exterior architecture too. Fifty one weeks later, the build was complete and the couple moved in last summer with Richard’s father happily installed in the original renovated bungalow next door. Liz has chosen restful, pale colours from a neutral palette and made the most of the plentiful natural light. The layout is easy to navigate and the décor flows from room to room creating a relaxed atmosphere throughout. “We do have the desire to find another project at some point in the future, but for now we are happy to have a rest from building and enjoy our first family Christmas in our new home.”
“I’m proud to say we never used a skip on site throughout the whole build – we made sure absolutely every piece of packaging or rubbish was recycled.” (Richard)

HEALTH & BEAUTY Getting ready to look great for Christmas Watch Aimee, an avid Stamford Living reader on her journey across town to get ready for her Christmas drinks PHOTOGRAPHY: ELLI DEAN
I
N preparation for a weekend of drinks and parties, Aimee popped along to see tanning expert Wendy at The Tanning Lodge. Wendy explains “The benefits of coming to see me at The Tanning Lodge are that it’s completely private. You can come in your loose clothing or even your dressing gown if you wish, without having to get fully dressed afterwards, just jump in your car. The reason I chose to use Skinny Tan is because it is the only tanning product that combines natural tanning actives and skin smoothing ingredients which tan and contour the skin, reducing the visible appearance of cellulite”.
Next on the list was a visit to Francesca Alexander on Ironmonger Street to have her hair and nails done. The difference between doing your hair yourself watching a YouTube tutorial (apart from the achy arms and countless attempts) is that a professional salon takes time prepping your hair for the updo. It’s a bit like laying foundations when building a house. The structure they achieve by taking each piece and skilfully styling it makes sure it holds and is super glossy. Her session started with a hair wash with Bumble and bumble invisible oil shampoo and conditioner. It contains 6 feather-light oils ideal for hair that needs serious nourishment without feeling weighed down. It was then on to a Signature Bumble and bumble blow dry; with great precision Francesca took sections of hair blow dried and pinned them to give volume at the root. Ashley took over for the updo, she simply braided one side of Aimee’s hair and gently pulled it out for a softer look. She then effortlessly positioned sections of immaculately backcombed hair into place at the nape of her neck.... a large sweeping fringe to finish and ta-da!!! Meanwhile Kimberley was busy filing, buffing, shaping and painting Aimee’s nails. The brand-new collection of Artistic Colour gloss gel had landed at the salon that morning. Kimberley chose the very trendy
28
STAMFORD LIVING DECEMBER 2017
colour Heart of Chrome to match Aimee’s outfit from Energy. The London-based brand are modern and have very unusual shades.
To convert your make-up, look from day to night my top tip is to stick with the colours you wear usually day-to-day. Simply change the finish from a matte/satin to a high gloss or metallic for a party look. For Aimee I took her favourite copper eyeshadow in a supershiny finish and applied it all over the lid to just above the natural crease. It made her blue eyes even brighter! I also applied it underneath the eye very close to the lash line for definition and blended it well. Using a black eyeliner pencil smudge in the waterline, apply plenty of mascara and some eyelashes (if you’re confident doing so). To finish, apply a generous amount of blusher with sparkle to the cheeks and a touch to the nose for a wintery glow, a slick of your favourite gloss and your good to go! What Aimee had to say: “The tan itself went on evenly and smelt of heavenly coconut, it developed over eight hours and the result was a very even, natural looking tan. I thoroughly enjoyed my make-over with Rebecca and the wonderful ladies at Francesca Alexandra. I was thrilled with the result! Thank you”. • Wendy at The Tanning Lodge, Castle Bytham – 07738 949842 £20 for Skinny Spray Tan • Francesca Alexander and Nails by Kimberley, 7 Ironmonger Street, Stamford PE9 1PL, 01780 482 888 -£40 for hair special occasion updo and nails from £20 for file and paint. • Rebecca Chantrell is available for special occasion makeup, weddings and will travel to any location www.makeupbybecca.co.uk 07841 622366

HEALTH & BEAUTY Equilibrium has had its own make-over Equilibrium has recently had a complete renovation, Rebecca Chantrell popped along to see what they have been up to
This winter Equilibrium has had an exciting total makeover. It’s been more than a decade since the team first graced the people of Stamford with their holistic and aesthetic approach to beauty. Focusing on improving your overall sense of well-being through treatments, they certainly exceed your expectations at every opportunity. Committed to investing in the latest technology, Equilibrium offers clients a huge range of treatments. Try out anything from a relaxing hot stone massage, the superb Caci radio frequency facials for youth boosting or award-winning Lipofirm Pro for inch loss; they really have it all!
You can find Equilibrium nestled away off St Paul’s Street in a gorgeous building full of charm. Walking in you really can’t help but unwind, a sanctuary that is so tranquil amid the hustle and bustle of town. The new look with calm grey walls, neutral tones and wood make for a very peaceful space. If you want to drop in for a quick manicure you can, but at the earliest opportunity I recommend donning a fluffy white dressing gown and spending as long as you can working your way through the long list of treatments on offer.

STAMFORD LIVING DECEMBER 2017
Each room has its own name, its own quirks and specialities, but what really makes Equilibrium stand out from the crowd is the newest and most impressive addition; The Retreat! Up the road from the main salon The Retreat has a real ‘wow’ factor! Cosy armchairs invite you to relax and unwind. The Retreat is available for bespoke events and no request is too small. Afternoon tea, gin tastings, canapés, the team will tailor make it just for you. It’s the perfect spot for a birthday party, hen do, office party or just an excuse to catch up with friends whilst being seriously pampered in your own little bubble. The other room that received lots of ‘ooohs’ and ‘aaaahs’ at the recent launch night was the Meadow Suite. This dual treatment room gives family and friends the unique opportunity to have a treatment together. The room itself is stunning, wooden beams, beautiful lighting and two beds side-by-side. Partners, mother and daughter or friends can enjoy this little indulgent haven
At the real heart and ongoing success of Equilibrium are 45 years’ experience amongst the highly skilled therapists. The team are very dedicated and feel like a family, they make their clients feel at home and the rapport they have with them is very evident. Many customers have been visiting Equilibrium since 2005 when they first opened which speaks volumes. This new chapter is an exciting one. Bluebird Care Homecare Nicholas Rudd-Jones talked to Leisa MacKenzie, Director of Bluebird Care, about their aims and achievements
B
LUEBIRD Care Peterborough & Rutland is a multi-award-winning Care Company based in the heart of Stamford, providing high quality homecare and support services in Stamford, Peterborough, Rutland, East Northants, Bourne, Market Deeping and the surrounding areas, including, Yaxley, Castor, Oundle, Oakham and Uppingham to keep you safe and comfortable in your own home. Leisa MacKenzie told SL: “We offer a unique choice of flexible homecare and support services tailored exactly to your needs. These could be anything from a 30-minute visit to 24-hour live-in care. You may want short term help after an illness, or you may require respite care because your usual carer is having a break. Whatever your needs, our dedicated team of home care workers are happy to talk to you about your requirements. “As our reputation grows, so does the demand for our services, so we are looking to grow our team of care staff over the next 12 months, in a variety of roles, all focused on supporting the care team & our customers. “As such we have introduced the Career Pathway for all our Care Assistants to ensure we continue to develop and train our staff, both in professional qualifications, bespoke training for specialisations in care such as Dementia, Palliative, Stroke and Alzheimers’. This is in addition to the continued training and supervisions of all our staff, ensuring we stay as the preferred provider of choice, providing the level of care that everyone has come to expect from Bluebird Care. “Over the seven years we have been established we have become integrated in our local communities both in a professional manner and as part of fund raising events for local charities. We pioneered a community care service working with Peterborough & Cambridge Clinical Commissioning Service helping the hospital in discharge and assisting the Accident & Emergency department to help avoid hospitalisation. “We are linked to several charities in our area, regularly attending events and trying to raise awareness. We have recently carried out an event raising funds for Thorpe Hall Hospice in Peterborough and a Tea Party event for Macmillan Cancer Support. “Not one to sit on our laurels, earlier this year we took part in ‘the innocent BIG knit’. This was a great charity event that has been really embraced, and has proven to be a fantastic support of Age UK. We are once again, with our team and customers, carrying out a knitting event, this time in support of the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) by knitting hats for premature babies and donated to the charity for sale. “We also like to ensure we support the communities on a wider basis, and not just those who have more of life’s ‘experience’ shall we say! Which is why we sponsor both Oakham rugby club and Stamford Daniels football club, trying to help both the young and old in our community. “What we as a team have achieved over the last seven years has been not without challenges, but it has always been rewarding, and we feel a great sense of pride in our team and the huge positive effect we have had not only on our customers but also on the community as a whole. We feel like, although we are seven years in, we are just getting started with so much more to do. 2018 will be a fantastic new year where we will continue to grow and develop as a company, but more importantly we will be able to work with more customers, more charities and more people within our community, making sure we stay the best at what we do.” Bluebird Care (Peterborough & Rutland), 16 Wharf Road, Stamford, Lincolnshire PE9 2EB 01780 480881 www.bluebirdcare.co.uk/peterborough-rutland

THE FESTIVE SEASON
IS UPON US If you need a helping hand, aesthetician Lisa Claypole from ELYSIA has a range of treatments that bridge the gap between beauty and surgery. In just a few weeks they can have you looking and feeling great. Ready to tackle Christmas AND 2018! Elysia have just upgraded their laser technology by introducing LYNTON lasers. A British based company, used and trusted by the NHS. All their training is with the University of Manchester and results are impressive. This is a perfect time of year to start your hair removal or skin rejuvenation treatments with 20% OFF ALL COURSES BOOKED DECEMBER-JANUARY
LASER SKIN REJUVENATION
Harnessing all of the benefits of the light. To put it simply LIGHT has amazing benefits on all of us. Just think how much better your skin is when you are on holiday. Unfortunately though, too much sun is very ageing and can have more serious effects. Elysia use safe light at controlled wavelengths and these treatments are wonderful for acne sufferers. It’s also one of very few treatments that can clear the skin reducing vascular and pigmentation concerns. It evens out the skin, reducing lumps, bumps, lines and wrinkles. A more youthful complexion guaranteed!
RED VEINS/ROSACEA/ SPIDER NAEVI/ PORT WINE STAINS
A common problem for so many people and it’s something Elysia can treat very successfully. Light energy is applied to the skin and heats it to the point where they are destroyed. Generally you will see a huge improvement after 1 or 2 treatments, which are quick with no downtime. This can make such a difference to the whole appearance of your skin and complexion.
34
PIGMENTATION Again this is such a common concern for so many people. Clearing the skin of pigmentation will knock years off you and it’s such an easy treatment. Light from the laser is absorbed by the pigment and breaks it down. Treat face, neck, hands…
Lisa Claypole - Elysia Health & Beauty.
HAIR REMOVAL
Wouldn’t it be amazing if you didn’t have to wax or shave again? Start your hair removal course now. Really popular for men and women on most body areas. Quick, easy, no messy sticky wax, no ingrowing hairs. What are you waiting for?
VENUS VIVA This is a wonder treatment! Always consistent and works to treat anti-ageing, lines and wrinkles, reduce pore size and acne scarring.
ACNE Light directly targets overactive sebaceous glands. This reduces the number and severity of active lesions. It also reduces inflammation and occurrence of breakouts.
LIPOFIRM PRO/ COLLAGEN WAVE
LIPOFIRM PRO and EXILIS ELITE provide fabulous radio frequency treatments. Also with the added benefit of ultrasound on the EXILIS, it can give a focused treatment with deeper penetration depths. Radio frequency heats deeper into the skin tissue to stimulate collagen production so it’s also perfect to improve skin texture and lift and is very comfortable with no downtime. This is a popular treatment either on its own or in combination with other technology. KYLIE MINOGUE is a fan of the COLLAGEN WAVE TREATMENT. BEFORE
AFTER
“We have some wonderful before and after’s in our portfolio where you see great lifting and natural collagen stimulation – it’s also fabulous for rosacea.” A little downtime with this treatment – but only 12 hours maximum and definitely worth it.
ULTHERAPY
If you want to look amazing and natural then ULTHERAPY uses ultrasound energy to stimulate your collagen and elastin. Sonic waves stimulate ageing collagen to tighten, lift and stimulate. Turn back time with this procedure and be the best you can be. Elysia find clients don’t really want to look younger; they want to look great for their age. Ultherapy used to have a reputation for being uncomfortable but as technology improves it’s really well received by our clients.

For December I thought it would be fun to engage with some of our four-legged friends that you will find out and about within local businesses, or some that you may well know and are just too damn cute to avoid, when you’re in Stamford or the surrounding villages. Loved by their owners and often involved as a way of encouraging likeminded dog owners to use their business, Stamford really is a society of dog owners and carers.

A mix of culture, gastronomy and bon vivant!
Victoria’s Top Table
I
T’S the most wonderful time of the year, and there is no better place to enjoy it than Stamford! Surely the cosiest month of the year as more and more fairy lights appear in shop windows and an evening log fire is compulsory. There are so many Stamford traditions to be enjoyed at this time of year… I am lucky enough to pass St John’s church each morning and always look to catch a glimpse of one of the most Christmassy scenes in Stamford…the stunning display of lit-up Christmas trees is a sight to behold and a must see if visiting our pretty town at this time of year. A mid-week treat in December is to pop along to The George Hotel on one of the evenings when the fabulous carol singers are visiting. There is nothing quite like it, during such a busy month, to take some time to enjoy the heart-warming Christmas songs in such a beautiful setting. The George really does know how to dress for Christmas with the most decadent of decorations and their traditional carol evenings mark the start of the festivities. www.georgehotelofstamford.com
bespoke hamper, being able to select items from the wide variety of cheese, chutneys and flat breads not to mention the exquisite selection of fine wine, port, gin, whisky to name a few! The team are so friendly and helpful, always going the extra mile for their customers (they even stayed open late for me, so that I could collect a hamper after hours!) This year, the Pickering Gin festive baubles look set to be a best seller! www.stamfordcheese.com Christmas shopping would not be complete without purchases from You (Living and Giving). Some of my most loved gifts have come from the You gift shop. There is so much to choose from, for all ages, and certainly covers gifts for those that have everything; their bookcase holds some of the most coveted coffee table books available! www. youstamford.co.uk
For a culinary treat, the Stamford Deli wins hands down each year! Pop in to see Kelly from the Deli and treat yourself to a deli Christmas sausage roll before hitting the shops for some serious gift buying. Christmas has come early for those who enjoy an edible advent as the selection of sweet and savoury delights is endless. Why not try one of Kelly’s famous brownies, the ingredients range from beetroot to Oreos! For those tricky to buy for, the Stamford Cheese Cellar is a great starting point. I love creating a 38

A liTtlE DOing We cannot wait for Santa’s visit to Sacrewell Farm, Thornhaugh, this year. Freya is a huge animallover and so a chance to meet and receive a present from Father Christmas as well as feed the goats and pet the rabbits is a dream come true! This month Christmas crafts, elf visits, and marshmallow toasting add a little extra magic to the day while the children explore the farm. If it gets a bit cold or damp there is the fantastic indoor play barn and if not, there are numerous wildlife trails and the tractor rides, which put a big smile on Toby’s face, as does Jolly Jules the donkey! You can finish the visit with a bite to eat in the café or make the most of stocking up on the array of toys, which make ideal gifts, from the shop. Christmas at Sacrewell kicks off with their first Christmas Market on 2-3 December and there is even the chance to have breakfast with Santa on 9-10 December. For more information and to reserve your place to meet Santa at Sacrewell: sacrewell.org.uk, 01780 782254
For a true winter wonderland experience, make sure a visit to Waterside Garden Centre, Baston, is on the to-do list this December. There’s ice skating for the whole family and for the children, Santa’s grotto is open for business every weekend until 24 December. My two loved stepping through the Narnia wardrobe and into their gift shop of magical Christmas scenes. From polar bears and penguins to a traditional London theme, there is a feast of fairy lights and beautiful decorations. Make sure to book ice skating in advance online: watersidegardencentre.co.uk, 01778 560000

Fancy walking off all those mince pies and chocolates? The Hills and Holes national nature reserve in Barnack is a great place for a winter’s walk and at this expensive time of year, somewhere free to explore. Toby loves running up and down the mounds, making up all sorts of adventures. Although not buggy territory, Freya manages to waddle her way round for most of it. The circular route gives you lovely views and the sheep mean we hear plenty of “baa” sounds (from Freya). fbhh.org.uk
A liTtlE EAtiNg Why not make a day of it at Waterside Garden Centre and treat the family to breakfast or tea with Santa? Toby and Freya would love to have the man in red come and join them at the table and deliver an early Christmas present. Not only do they get a choice of a hot or cold tea or a cooked breakfast, they can decorate a Christmas cookie and take home some reindeer dust for Christmas Eve. A magical meal experience for any believer! Book breakfast with Santa for a Saturday or Sunday at 9am in the run up to Christmas, or tea on Saturday afternoons, by reserving a table online. watersidegardencentre.co.uk As Christmas approaches, a few more treats sneak on to the menu and what better way to pass a cold, wintry morning than with tea and cake at The Bertie Arms, Uffington. Enjoy a mince pie or slice of cake from 9am Monday Saturday or 11am Sundays or maybe indulge in Toby’s favourite, a special hot chocolate (with or without the marshmallows!) There is plenty of space, a selection of games to play while the children wait, and their festive-themed menu is a winner for a family-friendly lunch as well. thebertiearms.co.uk, 01780 766400
Beautiful gifts abound in Nook on Horseshoe Lane but these charming silver bracelets (£14.99) by Joma Jewellery are something special for the stocking and come in a range of designs from angels to snowflakes. This festive fairy doll (£11.99) caught my eye as well. These might be the perfect presents for a little princess. Nook, 01780 751029
Traditional toys for girls and boys. Step back to simpler times with retro games at Sinclairs on St Mary’s Street. These yo-yos and lovely woodenhandled skipping-ropes would make ideal stocking fillers as would their little travel-sized versions of favourites such as Snakes and Ladders. Some unique gifts from £2 to £20 for a stocking or under the tree. Sinclairs, 01780 765421
A little Stocking Filling
I am eyeing up these fun and furry JellyCat Rainbow pompom toys (from £20) for Freya. She loves anything soft and cuddly and these gifts from YOU on St Mary’s Street tick all the boxes. YOU, 01780 765001
Louise Goss has been finding out what Stamford has to offer in the way of fun and fabulous children’s gifts this Christmas
Toby would love some of these fun pens and rubbers from TINC on the High Street. With prices starting at 50p, you can stock up and brighten up pencil cases for those back to school blues in January. TINC, 01780 754359 These handmade train letters (£1.50 each) will definitely be going into Toby’s stocking this year and are available at Stamford Kidz Stuff in the Corn Exchange, Broad Street. Spell out their name or maybe a meaningful word. Perfect for a shelf or on top of a chest of drawers. Stamford Kidz Stuff, 07956 083789
You are spoilt for choice for gift ideas at Marcia May Mini on St. Mary’s Street, but this gorgeous wooden pull along train (£15.99) is great for toddlers (and apparently Prince George owns one). If Toby’s love of jigsaws doesn’t wane soon then one of these colourful Djeco puzzles (£12.00) might also find its way under our tree this year. There are a range of designs and complexity to suit pre-schoolers upwards. Marcia May Mini, 01780 754400
Something cute and collectible? A Steiff toy is something to treasure and although the top end teddies don’t come cheap, Anand Shoes on the High Street have a whole range of animals from small cuddly friends ideal for babies (from £12) to these cute penguins (from £24) and this classic bear (£150). Anand Shoes, 01780 767688
A special Christmas book is an ideal stocking filler or maybe, as we like to do, a Christmas Eve treat to read before bedtime. Walkers Books on the High Street have something for all ages, fact and fiction, including beautifully illustrated books for younger children and some real page-turners for the older ones. CHRISTMAS If you are familiar with Marcia May Shoes, which opened in 2010, you will be pleased to know that Marcia May Mini is just as splendid.
Local girl, Samantha Drewery decided there was a need in the town for some great quality children’s clothes and gifts. “We already had a well established children’s shoe business within our original shop, so we decided to split the adult and children’s shoes and create this new store”. Since opening in June, Marcia May Mini stocks a carefully selected range of clothing, gifts, toys and footwear; you will be sure to find something to tick off your Christmas list.

Ask Leo
Delivering the Mail to Stamford Sue Lee and Jean Orpin look at the changing roles of the Post Master and the Post Office in Stamford.
S
TAMFORD was on a postal route long before the General Post Office was set up by Charles II. Initially this was for government surveillance of political letters but attempts to break the royal monopoly failed and the right to oversee mail and get the profits from its distribution was established. In the 18C there were receiving houses across the country. The mail was managed by Post Masters appointed by the GPO and long-distance deliveries were by Post-Boys on horseback. This was wide open to fraudulent dealings between Post-Boys and highway robbers: it was also slow. In 1784 John Palmer, a theatre manager from Bath, persuaded the government that Mail Coaches would be more efficient.
Mail by Coach Given its location on the Great North Road it is not surprising that Stamford soon became an important stopping place for the new Mail Coaches. Francis Freeling Secretary of the GPO, posted an advertisement in the Stamford Mercury. “November 2d 1786 The bags of Letters from London and the Places intermediate, with their Branches, will, for the first Time, be brought by the Mail Coach on Tuesday Morning, the 7th Instant. The bags of Letters from York and the Places to the North of Stamford, with their Branches, will, for the first Time, be brought by the Mail Coach on Tuesday Afternoon, the 7th Instant.” This daily service would arrive from London between 7am and 8am and the coach from the north at about 4pm. Letters for the North had to be taken to the Post Office before 10pm the previous evening and letters for the south before 3.30pm. These coaches were light, horses were changed every few miles, the mail was carried in a locked box and an outside guard in scarlet livery was on board. He would sound a horn as the coach approached tolls and settlements. The speed and safety of the mail was greatly improved. It is easy to imagine the excitement of first arrival down St Martin’s but it was not long before it became a regular occurrence. Within a few years there were Mail Coaches travelling through Stamford to Leeds, Carlisle, Oxford, Cambridge and Leicester and later to Yarmouth. Stamford’s Post Master had a busy job receiving letters, sorting and delivering them to the coaches then collecting and distributing in the town. Up to the mid-1830s there were several Mail Coaches going through Stamford with letters reaching London in 12 hours. 48
STAMFORD LIVING DECEMBER 2017
Mail by Train In 1841 the General Post Master wrote to Stamford Town Council in connection with the imminent demise of the Mail Coach from London to York and Edinburgh. He couldn’t find a contractor to run the coach. Changes were made to the timings of the ‘Rockingham’ coach (London to Leeds) and the Leicester coach so that mailbags were not held up at Stamford; however, the railway network, spreading like wildfire across the country, was set to transform the distribution of mail. Railway companies were already obliged to carry mailbags and sorting was also already taking place on moving trains. The introduction of the ‘Penny Post’ (also in 1841) saw a vast increase in the volume of mail. When Stamford was linked to the Midland Railway in Peterborough in the late 1840s mailbags were no longer taken by coach but delivered to the station. In 1856 the Stamford to Essendine line was opened giving a link to the Great Northern Railway and the main route to London and the north. The mail train immortalised by W H Auden in his poem ‘Night Mail’ had become the chief means of transport.
Post Offices Post Office buildings have changed considerably since the first ones were opened often in just a room. In Stamford in 1849 William Newcomb, a cousin of Richard Newcomb owner of the Stamford Mercury, was appointed Postmaster. Initially he ran the post office with the family printing business in Ironmonger Street, then moved to the Gothic House (now Walkers) and ran the printing business and post office from there. By 1866 he was replaced and the post office moved to 4 Red Lion Street. The Mercury reported on November 30th, “The removal of the Post Office from the High Street to Red Lion Street is much complained of, the new site being considered very inconvenient.” In 1867 it moved again to 34 St Mary’s Street then in 1874 it moved to 4 Red Lion Square (now Clarks’).
The New Post Office In 1890 there was the first national postal strike due to poor working conditions. The postmen had no place to go between deliveries and conditions for other workers were primitive. Around the country improvements were made and in 1891 the Postmaster General advertised for land to build a new post office in Stamford. They were offered land in All Saints’ Place by Major Hart, close to the Great North Road. The new Post Office was designed by a London architect and built by Bowmans. It opened in 1895 and accommodation was provided for the Postmaster, letter carriers, sorters, clerks, telegraphists and linesmen. The public room was at the west end and adjoining was the Postmaster’s room. At the east end a passage led to the sorting office with a kitchen for the letter carriers at the back. There was also accommodation for the clerks’ kitchen and a room for telegraphists. On the first floor there was an instrument room, a kitchen for the telegraph boys and a linesmen’s room. On the top floor there was an apartment for the caretaker. The building was lit by gas and there were cellars for coal. Hot and cold water was installed in all kitchens and all the rooms were heated.
Running the Post Office The telegraph office was open from 8am to 8pm. Telegrams were first introduced in 1875 and were delivered by telegraph boys who were not always a welcome sight as they brought bad news as well as good. Stamford post office was open from 7am to 9pm every day except for Sunday when it opened from 8am to 10am. One year there were so many Valentine cards that the staff returned to the post office at 3am on Feb 13th to ensure that the cards were delivered on time! There were three deliveries per day (and on Sunday, Christmas Day and Good Friday one delivery until 1963!). In 1912 the post office introduced the telephone service. The Midland Bank (now HSBC) was Stamford 1, Burghley Estate Stamford 2.
CHRISTMAS CARDS The Post Office has changed considerably but one custom started by the post office is still with us today and has grown in popularity. Henry Cole had helped to introduce the Penny Post in 1840 and launched the first Christmas card in 1843. These were luxury items costing a shilling each. Cards were even cheaper as they could be sent unsealed for ½d. In the 1860’s printing became cheaper and as celebrating Christmas became fashionable, cards were produced in large numbers. Pictures of holly and ivy, flowers and images of Spring were popular; only a few had a Christian theme. In late Victorian times robins and snow scenes became popular, as postman became known as Robins because of their red waistcoats.
POST EARLY Despite email it is still a tradition to send cards at Christmas. 75% of people prefer to receive a card by post. Since the 1930s the Post Office have urged people to post early, the longest running campaign by the Post Office. Noted artists and designers, for example Graham Sutherland, have been commissioned to produce posters.

Collections Post boxes were introduced in 1852 by Anthony Trollope who was working as a Surveyors’ clerk for the Post Office. There are still four Victorian letter boxes in Stamford. Letters were collected from the central post boxes five times a day. Seven postmen served the outlying villages. Joseph Charity delivered post to Casterton, Pickworth and Tolethorpe. His round was 17 miles. He travelled 150,000 miles in his thirty years and was awarded the Imperial Service medal by the king in 1928.

Visit wonderful historic family homes dressed up for Christmas. By Rebecca Chatterton
Splendid mansions dressed for Christmas DODDINGTON HALL, DODDINGTON, LINCOLN LN6 4RU Barely an hour north of Stamford, Doddington Hall is an unspoiled gem of a place that lets its personality shine out at Christmas. A classic example of an Elizabethan mansion, its beautifully mellowed brickwork and graceful symmetry, has complemented its surroundings since 1600. Claire Birch inherited the Hall and its estate in 2006 and with her husband, has worked to further its upkeep with imagination and ambition. Christmas is something for which Doddington is becoming renown. From the 25th of November visitors arriving at Doddington will step into ‘Christmas in Wonderland’ as the house is dressed up and the rooms staged to create a kaleidoscopic world of humour and ingenuity. Working in and around the Hall throughout the year fires the imaginations of Claire and her team and the beautiful old rooms of the Hall are allowed to show another side of their personalities. The result, she says is “very Doddington”. The displays and ornaments are lovingly sourced from the gardens or built by the staff. Rachel Petheram of Catkin Flowers, who grows her flowers in Doddingtons wonderful walled garden, cuts and dries flower heads throughout the year and foliage is foraged from the estate. The Hall has developed a relationship with lighting and production designer Howell Thomas and provides a unique opportunity for his students from Lincoln College’s production arts course to get involved in a live project. They have traditionally produced some magical pieces for the Long Gallery. Each room tells a different story – this year visitors can expect to meet the Queen and King of Hearts and to see Time on the run. Wonderland will weave its way into the very fabric of the house – think giant mushrooms, floating clocks, frozen forests, tented rooms and … well, go and see for yourselves. But Be Warned – you’re sure to leave Doddington inspired and fizzing with quirky ideas of your own.
Don’t forget to enjoy the shopping and eating – fill your tummy with cake and your bags with Christmas gifts. Eat: Courtyard Café - Enjoy everything from breakfast, to a cake, or lunch at Doddingtons courtyard café. Shop: The Bauble Barn – Christmas unleashed in the form of every decoration, in every colour that you never knew you needed but will suddenly, desperately want. The Toy Shop – wonderful old fashioned toys as they should be. The Farm Shop and Home Store – purchases waiting to be made from what’s for supper to new lamps for Christmas. HOLKHAM HALL, HOLKHAM, WELLS-NEXTTHE-SEA NORFOLK NR23 1AB With the North Norfolk coastline so easily accessible from here it is well worth visiting Holkham Hall at Christmas - a wonderful contrast to a windswept walk on the beach. The gilded staterooms of this imposing Palladium home come into their own bathed in candlelight at Christmas. Lady Leicester spends a good deal of her year thinking about and planning Christmas at Holkham. The knowledge that in 2016 over 5,000 visitors came to experience a ‘Candlelight Tour’ or an ‘Audience with Father Christmas’ continues to inspire her and she ensures that every last detail continues to delight. From the classic to the playful, each room is dressed up in a unique way – Holkham has become known for its surprising gingerbread creations - last year Emma Thorburn of Buns of Fun Bakery created a giant Big Ben over 5ft tall. This year’s gingerbread showstopper is still a closely guarded secret. Christmas is also a community effort, Lady Leicester is quick to point out that they couldn’t create many of the displays without the help of the Eastern Floristry College and the Fakenham Flower Ladies. Being a private home allows Holkham to be braver in what it does; in the past Lady
Leicester has delighted in using a snow machine to transform a whole room into the snowy forests of Narnia. Christmas trees and silver birches are used from the estate and the rooms are drenched in the smell of pine needles and spices from the candles. “I love hiding away in a corner and watching our visitors’ reactions,” says Lady Leicester “People leave feeling they can recreate the looks in their own homes”. The tours led by stewards, take in the history of the house and reveal the very personal stories behind Christmases of old. When children meet Father (and Mother) Christmas they look as though they have flown directly from the North Pole via the prettiest Victorian picture card. While away the day at Holkham Shop: The Courtyard Gift Shop Festive Food Fair 16th & 17th December Be entertained: Candlelight Tours and An Audience with Father Christmas On select days from Sunday 3rd December Get creative: Christmas Craft Workshops For more information www.holkham.co.uk

Investing in health care
F
ROM the provision of a fifth operating theatre suite, an additional MRI scanner and a new specialist High Dependency Unit to the creation of colourful gardens within the landscaped grounds, the completion of a major refurbishment and multi-million pound investment sees the Fitzwilliam Hospital looking to the future with pride. One of the region’s leading independent hospitals and a member of the Ramsay UK Healthcare Group, a network of 36 private hospitals in the UK, the Fitzwilliam opened in 1983 and quickly gained a reputation for high quality healthcare. Today its continuing investment in advanced medical technology means it can offer a range of state-of-theart treatments and services for private and NHS patients in a modern and comfortable environment. “The investment into a brand new state-
of-the art Theatre features Laminar air flows to achieve the most stringent standards of ultra-sterile Theatre conditions,” says Carl Cottam, Hospital Manager. “This will bring the total number of Theatres at the hospital to five, with commissioning for a two-bed High Dependency Unit which will enable the hospital to undertake more complex operations.” The Fitzwilliam is an Orthopaedic Centre of Excellence, providing a full range of musculoskeletal and orthopaedic procedures, including spinal surgery. Back pain affects many of us and with five spinal consultants, together with experts in the assessment and treatment of back pain and the latest imaging facilities, the Fitzwilliam offers a wide range of options for back and neck problems, from pain management and physiotherapy through to complex surgery. KNEE KNOW-HOW The latest developments in orthopaedic surgery are custom-made knees. Since the inception of knee replacement surgery, there have been continual developments in design, with implants and techniques developing rapidly. Standard cutting instruments take a ‘one size fits all’ approach to your total knee replacement surgery. They mean that your surgeon has to make adjustments as necessary during surgery to fit the implants to your anatomy. Using standard cutting jigs can result in implants that are too big or too small, that do not follow your natural shape and are an imperfect fit, whilst also offering variable precision in placing the implant. Custom cutting guides are disposable, patient-matched cutting blocks that are used to cut the bones during the knee replacement.
They are manufactured based on each individual patient’s pre-operative images so that the inner shape of the cutting guide matches the outer shape of your thigh and shin bones at their meeting point in your knee joint. This hand-in-glove fit allows your surgeon to make the precise bone cuts to position your knee implant in the optimal alignment. The patient benefits from precise placement, reduced operating and recovery times, lessened complication risk and decreased post-operative pain. DEDICATED SPECIALISTS In the outpatient department, private treatment areas and a recently refurbished rehabilitation gym are part of the Fitzwilliam’s extensive physiotherapy services. The highly qualified team of senior chartered physiotherapists, all specialists in their fields, offers a complete range of tailored programmes. The facility is also used by the region’s professional sportsmen and women for training or following an injury. The wide range of facilities and on-going investment means the Fitzwilliam is well equipped to service the ever-increasing demand for quality healthcare. “We are finding many more people are opting for private health insurance or choosing to selffund their treatment,” says Business Services Manager Lynne Nelson. “We are open from 8am to 8pm, Monday to Saturday, so appointments can be made at a time to suit a patient’s needs, and there’s free parking. You see the same consultant for in- and out-patient care and have dedicated specialist nursing.” • Fitzwilliam Hospital, Milton Way, South Bretton, Peterborough PE3 9AQ. 01733 261717. www.fitzwilliamhospital.co.uk

Deborah Pennell takes a look at what’s new and what’s worth a closer look
Food & Drink News
Second Helpings at Christmas
Since opening its doors just over two years ago, Second Helpings has fed nearly 5,500 people and intercepted around 20,000kg of food destined for landfill. It is estimated that a shocking £4m worth of food waste will go into landfill each year from the households of Stamford alone! This inspirational little café is now gearing up for a busy Christmas period; in 2016 the team of volunteers fed 60 people on Christmas Eve and a further 65 people on Christmas Day. George Hetherington, one of the project leaders reckons this year they may feed up to 100 people. He says, “our guests come from all walks of life; we have wealthy people sitting alongside those in poverty, homeless people, those who hate waste, families, those who just like good food, and those who are lonely and need some company.” The store cupboards at Second Helpings are kept full thanks to some of the town’s supermarkets and bakeries, along with unwanted produce from local farms. Due to the vast quantity of food now being collected by volunteers each week, they often have a surplus of food. In order to recycle it all, a Food Boutique has been established - running alongside the café on a Saturday, and also open on Fridays. The same ethos as the café applies - everything bought in the Food Boutique is on a ‘Pay as You Feel’ basis, nothing has a price tag, so those who can afford to pay do, and those who cannot afford to pay, do not. George Hetherington believes the numbers attending the Second Helpings Café have increased due to the current economic conditions we are experiencing in the UK. Those seeking help via the Food Bank and Citizens Advice Bureau are now often referred to Second Helpings for food. There are many ways people can volunteer. George goes on to say, “our greatest need at the moment is for qualified chefs. This is a challenging role, as we often have no idea what ingredients will be available to cook with, until the Friday afternoon. A lot of chefs’ enjoy and accept this challenge nonetheless.” Should you be interested in volunteering or hearing further about Second Helpings and The Real Junk Food Project then pop into the Café at the Methodist Church on Barn Hill on a Saturday lunchtime, or contact George Hetherington on georgehetherington2@gmail.com

Stamford local, Craig Lyons, took over The Spice Market stall in July this year, and can be found every Friday on the Stamford market in Broad Street. The Spice Market has everything you need for your Christmas cooking. An array of Christmas spices, cinnamon, nutmeg, allspice to add to your Christmas cakes, puddings, mince pies as well as a wonderful assortment of nuts and dried fruit; plump dried figs, sticky dates, local mincemeat and dried cranberries, sat alongside pecan, brazil and a selection of nuts. As a talented self taught baker and chef, Craig is in a wonderful position to offer advice on how to use the various spices. Do not forget your leftover Turkey either – The Spice Market has a huge and diverse selection of curry spices for that Boxing Day mash up - be it a fricassee, curry or soup, you are bound to find the perfect spicy addition to your recipe. Mulled wine and Mulled Cider (see recipe) are two must have drinks over the Christmas period. Fragrant cinnamon sticks, whole nutmegs, star anise and individual fresh vanilla pods are all stocked, to add to those warming party drinks. Find Craig Lyons on the Stamford market on a Friday or visit his Facebook Page at The Spice Market Health Food and More, or contact him on sales@thespicemarket.co.uk Fragrant and Warming Mulled Cider • 1.5 litres Dry Cider • 2 cinnamon sticks • 4 whole cloves • 2-star anise • 2 vanilla pods - pricked • 3 strips of orange peel • 4 cloves • 75g soft brown sugar • Spiced Rum to taste

This sell-out dinner was much anticipated by all, as owner and chef Chris Hand only runs these special events with a six-course tasting menu and wine flight once every season. The evening started with a chilled glass of Prosecco and a convivial atmosphere. Our amuse-bouche was a beetroot borscht, a traditional Polish soup, served in an espresso cup with a hint of vodka and crème fraîche. It had a sweet and earthy taste that was a perfect palate warmer. Following was a rocket and ricotta raviolo with grilled radicchio and a white wine sauce, which all paired well with the crisp, zesty Eric Louis Sancerre 2016. Our third dish – a sweet-tasting poached brill with girolles, with nutty and peppery notes – was our absolute favourite. The fullflavoured sauce of fish stock, chicken jus and a slight hint of lemon juice packed a punch to our taste buds. Chris continued to delight us all with the main dish of a medallion loin of pink venison accompanied
by a “Crown Prince”– a mini venison shepherd’s pie, with a rich venison jus that encapsulated all the flavours of autumn. The quarters of quince on the side added a tangy bite to each mouthful. The dish was paired with a Kim Crawford Pinot Noir, but we opted to stick to a fabulous English Pinot Blanc from the Stopham Estate. The two desserts were fabulous too, but you will have to go to prove that for yourself…whenever you go, you are guaranteed an interesting menu to choose from. There were so many rumours circulating Stamford when The Periwig closed, I’m guilty of sharing a few myself. “I’ve heard that it’s being turned into hotel rooms for The Crown, with a wine bar at the bottom,” I quite confidently said, and believed myself too. I had pictured a sort of private wine club, with irritated guests in the bedrooms above slamming their hand on the floor, asking people to be quiet. What a relief it was to find that all three floors of The Periwig have been transformed into Paten & Co, Knead Pub’s latest masterpiece, which opened in November. For people who knew and loved The Periwig, you’ll recognise the structure but the whole feel of the place is totally different. I had my fair share of nights up on that crowded dance floor. Where the little DJ booth once stood alongside a well-used dance pole, you’ll now find the kitchen where most of the food is cooked in a fancy little charcoal oven. The pole is still there somewhere, but you’ll have to see for yourself if you can spot it. I caught up briefly with Mick Thurlby, the brains behind so When I heard the rumours circulating Stamford that a new sushi restaurant many great bars in Stamford, “I’ve was opening, just 20 minutes away, I could barely contain my excitement. Or would it certainly reflects this mind set, there be everything we could ever want from a sushi restaurant just down the road. is something for everyone. Thankfully it was the latter, and I was blown away by just how tasty the food was. 23Seven Clothing: The smart destination

STONE’S throw away from the High Street is Stamford Walk, where you’ll find smart boutique 23Seven Clothing. Run by husband and wife team Jonno and Ruth, this little gem sells a mix of classic and latest trends for men and women, including British staples Fred Perry and Farah, and Italian brands Gabicci and Fila. You’ll also discover several niche brands such as Ichi, Louche and Sugarhill Boutique. “Our customers actually appreciate our policy of only stocking a limited quantity of each item, reducing the chances of being seen out in the same outfit,” explains Jonno, who set up the shop over four years ago. “And we often stock brands they’ve never heard of such as cycling frame manufacturer Reynolds. Next year we’re introducing at least five more brands, some new, some established, but all exclusive to Stamford, including Nicce, Luke, Sergio Tacchini and Lacoste.” “We listen to our customers. One of the main bugbears is the lack of affordable jeans on the high street, so we’ve recently taken delivery from up-and-coming brand DML. They’re available in three colours and fits, and sell for just £40.” You can enjoy 10% off on all purchases at 23Seven Clothing when you show this article or the leaflet in this month’s issue. News & Notes Malcolm Sargent Catchment Area Properties Outperform Stamford Average By 33% This month, local property advisor David Crooke, owner of UPP Property Agents looks at the positive impact and influence a great primary school has on house prices
A
NECDOTALLY, I have always known that a good school creates good demand, and good demand affects house prices. As I like a challenge, I decided to look at the science behind these assumptions, so I ran a report using our database of house hunters and relocating families. The results confirm there is a close correlation between the high demand areas of Stamford and the close proximity to a good primary school, and many people will increase their budget quite significantly whilst others would consider downgrading their property requirements to be close to a good primary school. According to the SchoolGuide website, Malcolm Sargent Primary School is one of the best primary schools in Stamford. Its figures are certainly impressive; their last Ofsted Report classified it as ‘Good’, a score of 105 on reading and Maths 106 (National Average 99.4 and 99.6 respectively) at Key Stage 2. Looking at property sales within half a mile of Malcolm Sargent (the core of the catchment area), property values have risen in value since 2000 by 222.6%, whilst according the Land Registry, the Stamford average as a whole has risen in the same time frame by 167.1%. That means the parents of Malcolm Sargent have seen the values of their properties rise proportionally 33.2% more than the Stamford average... interesting don’t you think? However, whilst a good primary school significantly contributes more to house prices, the same can’t be said for secondary schools. There are two reasons for this; firstly, as secondary schools are much larger their catchment areas are correspondingly much larger, meaning parents don’t need to live so close to the school. Secondly in the UK, whilst the difference between the top 25% and bottom 25% of secondary schools is not insignificant, in the primary school sector, the difference between the top 25% and bottom 25% is, according to the London School of Economics, considerably and significantly more. Homeowners, landlords and investors are all welcome to call into UPP Property Agents to discuss the Stamford property market with David and to consider how Stamford compares with its’ closest rivals. STAMFORD LIVING DECEMBER 2017
Anyone can have the luxury of a wood burning stove Georgie Fenn catches up with our local experts at Alfred Poppins to chat about the luxury of warmth this winter
I
’M currently sat on my sofa, in Ketton, with a border terrier under one arm and a sausage dog under the other. My wood burner is chucking out some serious heat; my dad calls it the little puffer. I spent the weekend preparing wood, dad said his father used to tell him wood will keep you warm three times; when you chop down the tree, when you split it into logs and when you light the fire, isn’t that simply wholesome. With the fire going, I never put on the heating which sometimes means traipsing up to a freezing cold room with just a hot water bottle and two doggies for warmth, but it’s far more satisfying that any heated room could ever be. People think wood burners and stoves are just for country homes, but they couldn’t be more wrong. I’ve been chatting to Wayne from Alfred Poppins who you’ll find at West Street, Stamford, and he tells me it only takes around two days to install a wood burner or stove…even if you don’t currently have a chimney, anyone can have one. Wayne explains that he ‘fell into’ the wood burner industry, not in a Santa like fashion but through his chimney sweeping trade. “I was seeing badly fitted wood burners, and I thought I could do a better job of that myself, so I set up my own company,” says Wayne, who has done exactly what he aimed to, alongside his wife Helen. Their company, Alfred Poppins, not only sells favourite brands including Woodwarm stoves, Home & Country stoves, Parkray, Hunter and many more, but they also fit, offer advice, and clean and line chimneys. I’m guilty of skipping a chimney sweep or two each year so I asked Wayne why it’s so important to keep on top of these sorts of things. It essentially comes down to safety; blockages could cause a chimney fire and when it’s only around £50 a year for a service, it’s really not worth the risk. Wayne is also a member of The National Association of Chimney Sweeps and HETAS registered which is something home insurance companies often look for from regular chimney sweeps. For all of your open fire, romantic evenings, wood burner or stove dreams, get in touch with Wayne and Helen at Alfred Poppins on 01780 753979 or visit their show ream on West Street, Unit 4, Stamford, PE9 2PL.

Excellence Abounds at the Stamford Endowed Schools
I
N September 2017, Stamford High School, Stamford School and Stamford Junior School (including Stamford Nursery School) were inspected by the Independent Schools Inspectorate (ISI), the body approved by the Government for the inspection of independent schools. Three different teams of inspectors visited the Schools concurrently to assess the quality of pupils’ academic and other achievements and the quality of pupils’ personal development and regulatory compliance. The overall findings were outstanding. The Schools were rated as ‘Excellent’ (the highest level of achievement) in five out of six reports and ‘Good’ (the second highest level of achievement) in one report. The Schools were fully compliant with ISI regulations, which included a thorough assessment of pastoral, health and safety, staff recruitment, medical and boarding policies and procedures, as well as, its overall estate. Academic achievement was recognised across the board along with ILIC (independent learning and intellectual curiosity) and the benefits of the Stamford co-curricular offering together with the outstanding pastoral care. Many of the inspectors’ comments show that Stamfordian Spirit is strongly in evidence in our pupils with numerous comments made about hard work, resilience, ambition, awareness of others and kindness. Will Phelan, Principal, Stamford Endowed Schools commented; “These considerable achievements are the result of the Stamford community working together. Whilst, we are naturally delighted with our academic achievements, which are at the heart of all we do, I am especially proud of the less tangible aspects such as ethos and strong core values, that have become synonymous with our students: this is a culture by which we live and work and testament to the hard work by the whole Stamford community. “Our staff, parents and Governors have shown total dedication and hard work in ensuring that the Schools continue to achieve excellence in teaching, while inspiring and supporting their pupils. At every level, in every department across the three Schools, enormous thanks go to all 533 members of staff for their tremendous contributions to these outstanding achievements.” The full inspection reports can be found at www.ses.lincs.sch.uk.

News & Notes Milne Joinery’s brandnew showroom
M
ILNE Joinery’s brand-new showroom ‘The Forge’ in West Street, Stamford opened on Saturday 18 November, marking an exciting new era in this wellestablished fami-ly company’s story. We spoke to Emily Craig-Tyler, one of its owners, to find out more: “We’ve been around for 30 years and have always had too much work! Expanding our premises and opening the showroom means that we can keep taking on new work and have ample space to do it. People coming to the showroom can feel the furniture and see for themselves how special it is. Our furniture isn’t cheap, but essentially, if you buy mass produced pieces, you’ll get a lot less quality for the same price. “We take a collaborative approach, showing customers the best possible options, then toning them down according to their budget. That way, the customer doesn’t have a nasty surprise when the ‘extras’ bill arrives. Our pricing is transparent and standardised. People know exactly what they’ll be paying before going ahead. “We’ve always done bespoke furniture and refurbishment, as well as house renova-tions and complete building works. That said, we’re still very much joiners first and foremost, undertaking external joinery including orangery frameworks, windows and doors. “We’re a tight-knit, reliable bunch and everyone takes a huge amount of pride in our work. You get a personal touch; I go around to every job and tend to be the person who quotes for each project and inspects it at the end. I’ve been in the industry for over a decade, so I can happily go into my workshop and make things from raw tim-ber. Having experience in every part of our business, I know every aspect of the work intimately. Milne Joinery, The Forge, West St, Stamford, PE9 2PN; 01780 751724 www.milnejoinery.co.uk

Sponsor a Slate Campaign launched to secure remaining funding for essential roof repairs
S
UNDAY 15th October saw users of the All Saints’ and St John’s Centre, Scotgate, Stamford get together to launch a new campaign to help secure the remaining funding required for its Phase 1 essential repairs to the South Elevation Roof. Used by over 20 groups a week including over 300 children and 50 adults, the Centre is an essential community hub for a wide range of educational and social activities across the town and beyond. The Foodbank uses the Centre as its storage, distribution and welcoming place, and it is the Trustees’ intention to expand its use to allow other groups to meet so they can help with dementia and mental health issues in the town. In 2015 the trustees of the Centre embarked on an essential fundraising journey to secure the future of the building as a meeting facility for the whole community through the improvement and development of the existing facilities. Since that time, they have successfully secured over £25,000 in grant funding and benefits in kind. With a total repair cost of almost £40,000, the Trustees are now on a final push to secure the remaining £15,000 for these essential repairs. Whilst longer term the centre is looking at further re-development to improve existing facilities, the priority is to repair the main roof to ensure that it is weatherproof. As a key building in the Conservation Area the Trustees are committed to maintaining the character of the building by ensuring that the repairs are undertaken in local materials, mainly Collyweston Slate. Jean Asher and Eileen Bangay, from Stamford Foodbank commented – “The Centre is an essential central base enabling us to feed over 1000 families a year. The trustees are working hard to secure essential repairs and make the centre viable for the future, some of which are already coming into fruition. We hope that the community can continue to support this important cause.” Adrian Worgan, Chair of Stamford Amateur Musical Society, commented “the Centre provides us with cost-effective/usable space to prepare for the many shows we put on for the benefit of the community during the year, including our next show “Company” which opens on 9th November. We look forward to seeing further improvements and are delighted to be able to support the Centre in its fundraising aims.” Members of the public can sponsor a slate for just £10 or a square of slates for £1,500. She’s a rocking, rapping, international harpist but Stamford girl, Eleanor Turner, tells Louise Goss that life is not all Chopin and champagne
Eleanor Turner T
HE last time I had seen Eleanor Turner was a chance meeting in Sydney. She was performing at the World Harp Congress at the city’s Conservatorium of Music, one of Australia’s most prestigious music schools. That’s when you know she is so much more talented than her selfdeprecating humour will let you believe. Reading a copy of her musical CV could also tell you that. The mum of two made her concerto debut aged just 15 after reaching the final of the Audi Junior Musician of the Year. Since then she has collaborated with some of the most renowned harpists and musicians, won international competitions and composed numerous works from ballet to pop. This year will be sixteen years performing with the group, Four Girls Four Harps, who have just recorded their latest album and are frequently played on Classic FM. Currently she holds the position of Head of Harp at the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire, teaches at local schools and is the friendly face organising Stamford’s Cosy Concerts for children. However, when I ask what her favourite moment has been to date, her face lights up with one word: “Ranagrí”. “It’s an amazing band,” she says. She joined in September having previously done the occasional gig with them. “I remember the first one I did was in a little folk club. It just felt like the missing thing in my life, the missing piece of the puzzle.” They have just toured supporting Justin Currie, lead singer with Del Amitri. “We were playing all these rock venues,” Eleanor says. “Someone asked if I ever thought I’d be playing the harp at these venues and of course, I really didn’t. It didn’t occur to me that I wanted to until it happened and you realise how much fun it is.” Performing is what re-energises her and “provides light relief” after the draining process of applying for grants. “The best things I have done have been as a result of successfully getting funding,” she says. “You invest so much into the applications, it’s disheartening when you don’t get it and are left feeling really exhausted.” Eternally grateful for the grants she has received, and often needs, she says her work is not as glamorous as it can be perceived. She launched a fundraising campaign to get to the World Harp Congress in Hong Kong this year. “Two days before it I was busking frantically in Stamford High Street, trying to make enough money for the fuel to get to the airport,” she says. “That is what my life is like the whole time… It can be really hand to mouth.” As with most artists however, she would not change it. She thanks her mum for introducing her to the harp and sharing her love of Harpo Marx, who Eleanor names as an inspirational influence for his “instinctive harp playing.” Her children help to lift her own music. 82
STAMFORD LIVING DECEMBER 2017
“I can tap into a level of joyous abandon that I would never be able to experience without children” “Straight away I’m in a happy place so I can tap into a level of joyous abandon that I would never be able to experience without children,” she says, but also admits to having sombre influences and “connecting to pain.” “I’ll be playing a concert and will be doing an internal musical prayer to all of these awful things that are happening in the world and that is my way of coping with real life and also my own personal crises.” She has recently returned from Shanghai where she represented the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire’s foray into experimental music: Playing the harp with new technology, allowing
her to “throw the music” around the room, while simultaneously using sign language to convey a poem (or “ranting rap” as she calls it). “I blend a lot of the music genres,” she says laughing. “It starts off as classical and ends up as hip hop with a rap and sign language over it… That is literally what I wanted to do with my life. “I stopped worrying about audiences that come expecting Bach and pretty harp music. There is an element of me feeling confident that there’s some kind of expectation out there that it might be a bit different. I’ve got to an age where if it all ends tomorrow I’d rather be having fun doing it.” www.eleanorturner.biz
