Picture of the month In 2018 it is 900 years since work started on the construction of Peterborough Cathedral – hence this historic-feeling illustration for February’s Picture of the month. For the potted history below, we called in the help of Sue Dobson, long-time contributor to our sister publication Nene Living and author of The 50 Greatest Churches and Cathedrals of the World (Icon Books, £8.99). In the beginning, a motte and bailey castle were erected on the north side of the abbey precincts as a deterrent to future aggressors. However, this couldn’t deal with the fire of 1116 that started in the bakehouse and raged for nine days, destroying the entire town. Rebuilding started two years later with the construction of a new church, substantively the one that would become Peterborough Cathedral (hence the 900-year anniversary). Additions and renovations aside, the structure of the building has remained essentially as it was when it was consecrated in 1238. Peterborough Abbey was dissolved in 1539 during the Reformation, and its land and properties were confiscated. Instead of tearing down the church, however, Henry VIII created a new Bishop (the former Abbot) in 1541, and the great abbey was transformed into Peterborough Cathedral (the final resting place of his discarded queen, Catherine of Aragon). Art from the heart: Valentine’s gift inspiration This Valentine’s Day, why not surprise a loved one with a stunning piece of art? Gillian Durno ‘Working from my beautiful cottage garden studio in rural Rutland; I’m inspired by the continual cycle of nature, the local landscape, and flowers in particular. My work is a celebration of still life, flowers, landscape and texture conveyed through contemporary floral, still life and impressionist landscape paintings in acrylic, mixed media, collage and pastel. ‘I am happy to discuss any subject matter for a commission. Welland House in Stamford Dominic and Sarah Bovis adored their home in Liverpool but when they moved to Stamford with their three year old son Lucas, their challenge was to create a home they could love just as much. WORDS: AMANDER MEADE
L
OOKING for a family home that suited them had proved tricky for the Bovis family before they viewed Welland House on Tinwell Road in Stamford. “Although the core property was constructed in the 1950s and was much smaller with only three bedrooms when we bought it, the house stands in a very large plot and we could see the potential for expansion,” explains Dominic. “We had done major renovations on our former home in Liverpool so we were not put off by the scale of work to be done.” Using trusted tradesmen they had worked with before, Dominic and Sarah had plans drawn up to create bedrooms in the roof space and for a large double height extension to the rear, intended to more than double the size of the house. “Although it was challenging to live on site whilst all the work was undertaken, it did mean that we could tweak and alter things as we went along.” Using a mixture of existing contacts and local tradespeople, and despite the major upheaval, the house is now beautifully presented and refitted with a contemporary feel. Dominic has an exacting eye for detail and an aversion to clutter which is particularly evident in the show stopping kitchen. “We installed under-floor heating and plenty of storage all under Corian worktops. There are pop up sockets and even the toaster slides away to be hidden out of sight to keep the surfaces easy to clean which is perfect for busy family life.” Dominic and Sarah love to entertain frequently so the vast island breakfast bar provides the perfect place to socialise and incorporates a gas hob, downdraft extractor and wine fridge. There are two integrated ovens, fridge and freezers and a coffee machine, with a waste disposal system and boiling as well as filtered, chilled and sparkling water taps. LED accent lighting offers several mood lighting options and a bank of sliding doors open to, and give views of the garden. “We spend most of our time in here in the summer with the doors open to the garden which is ideal for us to keep an eye on Lucas and his friends while we cook.” 18

The outside space has also been landscaped and designed with ease of maintenance in mind. There is just less than half an acre with lawns, terraces and mature flowering and shrub borders. “We don’t have the time for much gardening at this point in our lives – in fact, I even use an auto-mower which has a docking station outside and takes just a tiny amount off the top of the lawn each day in the summer and mulches the clippings back into the lawn to keep it healthy.” Another favourite space is the cinema room where the family get together to watch movies or TV. The couple designed this home with family life in mind with clear, clean spaces, a neutral colour scheme and high end, quality fixtures built to last. There are quirky design elements too which add interest like the exposed tiling on the feature wall in the family room, contemporary fireplaces and the unusual bespoke glass and oak cantilevered staircase in the hall. “From outside the house looks quite standard,” says Dominic, “it’s when you come in that you realise how much space we have created as well as all the high spec fittings. Although we are moving on to a new property, we have been very happy here and love Stamford so definitely won’t be going too far.” Welland House is currently being marketed with Savills of Stamford. Julia Hayward owner of Toe-Tally gives advice on foot care “Many foot problems including such things as hammer/mallet toes, blisters, bunions, corns and calluses, heel spurs, ingrown nails, fungal nails and athletes foot can occur due to simple neglect. An everyday footcare programme could prevent the most common foot-related problems and pains from occurring in the first place, so... make sure that the feet are clean and dry. Moisturise daily, this will not only prevent hard skin that can then crack, allowing a porthole entry for bacterial infection but will also allow you to stimulate circulation. For the younger person One of the most common foot problems will be how they walk. It may be due to intoeing, flat feet or even a very common growth spurt. In these cases, footwear is so important and needs to fit properly to help support a growing foot. If intervention is necessary, we may provide an orthotic (specialised inner soles) specifically for the individual’s needs. For the older child Quite common foot complaints may include athletes foot and fungal nails that can cause smelly feet. This is because the foot contains an incredibly high number of sweat glands and when in enclosed spaces can be the cause of a nice warm, moist environment. Good hygiene is essential! For an adult foot We may see problems such as Plantar Fasciitis, dry skin, athletes foot, corns and callus build up. The routine care of daily moisturising, can help hard skin build up and the correct shoe wear could resolve the Plantar Fasciitis although, orthotics may also be used along with foot exercises”. ANY of us won’t give our feet a second thought until we run (pardon the pun) into trouble that hinders our daily activities. For eyes we head to the opticians, for teeth we go to the dentist but what about our feet? They work hard for us, taking approximately 8,000 to 10,000 steps a day. Whether you have a niggling toe complaint, chronic aching feet, or toes that are damaged through running and walking, Stamford has a wealth of experts on hand ready to look and give advice how to keep them in good shape.
A podiatrist is a health care professional that is medically trained to diagnose, treat and rehabilitate feet and lower limbs. Their main aim is to keep you active and to eliminate any aches, pains and abnormalities. If you are on your feet all day, exercise regularly or walk long distances, keeping feet in the best shape is absolutely essential. I popped along to see Susan Lester, Principal Podiatrist and owner of Snowdens Foot Clinic and Beauty Spa, for a foot MOT! A new patient podiatry treatment at Snowdens starts with a chat about your feet and nails and a discussion about your overall health. Foot problems can sometimes indicate an underlying illness such as diabetes, gout and even immune disorders, so it’s important that your podiatrist gets an insight into your wellbeing. Susan then checks circulation and nerve function, and has a thorough look at your lower limbs, feet and nails. Hard skin on the soles of the feet and toes are removed using the debriding method (using a scalpel which is totally painless) and an electric sander. Removing the build-up of dead skin is a simple and effective preventative method, as hard skin can affect the way you walk and the way shoes fit. Nails are cut and filed, and inspected for signs of infection. All findings are noted down and the correct course of treatment will be recommended, whether that’s orthotics, foot/nail surgery, or medication. “I recommend people come to see us quarterly or pop along for a free 15-minute foot health check if you have any concerns with any lumps and bumps”. When visiting Stamford town centre nowadays there are many people walking around with a dog or two in tow but not many of them are tied up outside the shops, pining or waiting patiently for their owner to return. It is really quite interesting to see how many shops, cafés and hotels are now dog friendly, although rightly so have rules about paws and where they are allowed.

F your visit to Stamford started off with a walk across Stamford Meadows, it would be wrong of you to presume that in such a big open space you could let your dog off the lead for a run around. This is because, and as I recently witnessed, our four-legged friends like nothing better than to chase the ducks and geese that reside by the water’s edge at this magnificent piece of open space. There are signs asking on one side for ‘no dogs’ which is the side where the picnic tables are and then a sign for the other side advising that dogs should be kept on leads and any mess to be cleared away as this is where children and their families like to play and run around. As you make your way up into town and past the Cosy Club, you may spot the odd well-behaved Labrador laying near the feet of its owner having a coffee in the lounge/casual dining area where there is plenty of space and separated from the main dining part of the property. Working your way up the High

Street, there is a delightfully vintage-looking sign inviting any ‘pet’ to wend its way into White Stuff - something which could easily encourage you to spend some money and avoid leaving your favoured pooch outside in the cold. The newly opened Space.nk with its shiny new shelves and abundance of sleek bottles offers dogs a quick slurp of water before heading inside for you to get some grooming products of your own. Should you then need to prepare yourself for a rocky terrain or camping trip then Mountain Warehouse is encouraging your trusty sidekick for a drink by cleverly branding its water bowl outside as well as putting a notice in the window. However, it is fair to say that dogs cannot go into every establishment and some will allow dogs of the assisting kind as you can see from the notice on the doors at Café Black. Having witnessed a small Cockerpoo being trained as a Guide Dog for the Hearing in M&S, whereby it nudged the owner’s leg with its nose to warn it of noises, I can understand how important
these little animals can be to more than just the visually impaired. Café Nero used to have a sign on the wall that said something along the lines of ‘We welcome paws, but only on the floor’ which I felt was an informative but gentle approach to asking for no seat smuggling from our canine companions. However, I discovered a very friendly black Labrador called Sam, who at five months old was unsuccessful in waiting patiently for his owner to return from the queue at the till and being bribed by his other owner with treats to keep him occupied. A scenario I have experienced only too well with Nutmeg, our Cocker Spaniel. Other establishments are partial to offering your dog a snack or two so do not be fooled by the jar of multicoloured or odd shaped biscuits on the bar in one of the many hostelries in town - these are not for human consumption and can be found in the likes of The Crown Hotel and Tobie Norris to name but two. Happy dog, happy owner!

Spotlight on: Stamford Childminders
It is one of the most important decisions to make regarding your child’s welfare and therefore, finding the right childcare provider can also be one of the most stressful. They are responsible for your darlings when you can’t be. They provide education, entertainment, care and cuddles and impact on some of the most formative years of your child’s life. Louise Goss meets The Stamford Childminding Group to get the lowdown on the home-from-home child care option.
A
CHILDMINDER is just one of the childcare options, which also include pre-schools, nurseries and nannies, yet there is misinformation out there which can complicate what might already be a confusing decision. The Stamford Childminding Group is currently an eight-strong group of women offering childcare for local families. This group of warm, friendly and professional ladies are among the dozens of childminders working locally to provide personalised childcare in a home setting. They were keen to dispel a few myths about what a childminder does and to make one thing quite clear: they are not just babysitters! The group often meet up for joint play sessions, allowing the children in their care to interact and make friends with a wider group of people. They welcome other childminders who want to join and take advantage of the social interaction and support offered and it enables them to help parents out by referring work to each other if they are unavailable at any point. “We get together as a whole group each week,” says Dee Nottingham, one of the childminders. She goes on to explain the activities they organise together from private library sessions with a reader, lessons in French and Spanish, to “toddler fit” where the children

workout to various music. “They are pretending they’re tigers but actually they are doing lunges,” says Dee. As well as the more structured activities and the care and education at home, childminders will take the children to local playgroups and attractions. Trips to The Yard, Burghley, Rutland Water and Sacrewell Farm are often on the agenda. “When you’re out and about with colleagues and the children on a beautiful sunny day and the kids are running around having a good time, what better job have you got? The children are happy, we are happy,” says Dee. “They have got exposure to real life,” adds Alex Kennedy, another Stamford childminder. “We all do something with the children every morning, whether that be together or going to playgroups, going out walking or playing in the garden,” she says. Childminding is not all child’s play and what parents can be reassured of are the protections that are in place. “We all have to have liability insurance,” says Alex. “We also have to have special house insurance and special car insurance.” That is on top of the different organisations with which they need to register and the many safety and legal requirements such as regular fire drills, health and safety and
hygiene certificates. “We enjoy playing an active role within our community and the children’s social and emotional well-being is at the forefront of our planning,” states their group ethos and there is no doubting the passion and dedication which the Stamford Childminding Group embodies. Childcare is a very personal decision for each family but if you might be considering the childminder option, the following information might help you in your choice.
How do I find a childminder?

INDING a childminder is something, which like many things these days, is first done online unless you have a word-of-mouth recommendation. The website childcare.co.uk lists the childcare providers in your local area and from there you can contact a childminder and arrange a visit to see if it seems like the right fit for your child. Locally, the Stamford Childminding Group have their own Facebook page, where you can enquire about vacancies within their group.
Could a childminder be for you? • Home from Home Children are cared for in a home environment. Shared meals are eaten round a kitchen or dining table, play is often in the carer’s living or playroom. Some minders have their own purpose-built rooms attached to the house but many zone off parts of their own home and all are risk-assessed for child safety. Groups are small and activities are done in a homely space or children are taken for days out as on a family outing. The small group size allows for adaptability of the daily routine and a very personalised approach to the children in their care. • Educational Childminders have to follow the Early Years Foundation Stage framework, covering all areas of early childhood development. This is the same framework which nurseries and pre-schools follow and just as in those settings, childminders keep parents updated with their child’s progress through online journals such as Tapestry, providing reassurance of their safety and wellbeing. • Real-life Learning Trips to the supermarket, the hairdressers,
getting feet measured at the shoe shop or cooking and gardening at home: they are all daily-life experiences which a childminder can offer. Children can adopt new skills and learn basic maths, science and language through these activities. • Flexible From early starts to late evenings, even occasional overnight care, a childminder works around you and your schedule. There are no set sessions and they usually charge by the hour so you only pay for the time you require care. • Consistent Care Your child will be cared for by the same person each day and this care can continue from the baby and toddler years through to pre-school and after school. Many childminders offer a school drop-off and pick-up service, allowing siblings to remain together and a child to receive continuous care from the same person over the years as they grow. • Collaborative: Childminders work with other professional bodies in order to ensure a child’s development is on track. They will do the one and two-year checks in conjunction with the health visitor and can consult with professionals should any concerns arise.
DID YOU KNOW? Funding Government funding is available for childcare through registered childminders. As long as the childminder is rated ‘good’ or ‘outstanding’ with Ofsted then you are eligible for the 15 hours free childcare a week for all 3 to 4 year-olds and if you fulfil requirements, the 30 hours free childcare for children from 3 years. Funding can be split between two different childcare providers if needed, whether that be two different childminders or a nursery and a childminder. Qualifications and registrations Childminders are professional people who are required to complete a raft of qualifications and courses in order to provide childcare. They must keep up to date on allergy information, health and safety, first aid and special needs requirements. These are among the qualifications and courses they are required to have: • A module within the level 3 home-based diploma in childcare • Hygiene certificate level 2 (plus regular inspections) • Paediatric First Aid • Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) checks • Safeguarding children course
• They are recommended to take 4 new courses a year, which could include courses from special needs to speech therapy. • Registration with the ICO for data protection Ofsted Ofsted is the government organisation which inspects and regulates schools and childcare providers. All individual childminders have to be registered with Ofsted and the Early Years Register and/or the Childcare Register. They are inspected and rated by Ofsted to ensure they are providing adequate care and are suitable for young people. The EYFS framework All Ofsted-registered childcare providers must follow the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS). It is a framework that sets the standards for child development, learning and care and on which nurseries, pre-schools and childminders will base their teaching and the care they deliver. Through play and fun activities, a childminder will monitor the following different areas of learning: • communication and language • physical development • personal, social and emotional development • literacy • mathematics • understanding the world • expressive arts and design

A Little Doing February is the month that the Piccolo Concerts start up again at St John the Baptist Church in the centre of Cathedral Square, Peterborough. In a great space at the front of the church, the classical concerts for all under-5s showcase a variety of musicians and instruments and are informal, relaxing, entertaining and informative. Freya sits quietly mesmerised listening to the music and Toby loves the fact you can join in at the end, shaking tambourines and maracas and banging triangles. Adults only need pay £4 at the door. Children are free, and tea, squash and biscuits are available beforehand. A Little MAking We can’t wait for pancake day this year (Tue 13) and Toby is very excited about getting pancakes for tea! It is not always practical (or safe) to let him help as much as he would like (unless we have a batter explosion) so if the children are too small to flip their own, we have come up with some fun topping ideas to get them involved with decorating. The Seven Ages by Gordon Turnill Following last October’s article about the life and work of Stamford photographer Gordon Turnill, several readers have sent Ask Leo photographs celebrating important milestones in their families’ lives. The engagement photographs of Frederick Lord (brother of Grace the tinter) and Kathleen Hall were taken about 1936. Their daughter, Alison, thinks Frederick looks sinister in those glasses but we think they are classic period pieces. More at ease with decisions made are Roger Bettinson and Joan Woodisse at their wedding in Stretton Church in 1962. Wedding pictures were another speciality and people would make a point of passing the Studio window to see who had been married recently.

Alderman Pledger, a well-known businessman in the iron, steel and timber trade was Mayor 1949-50. Alderman Ireson, Mayor 1962-3, was a building contractor and stone mason who cared a great deal for the historic buildings of the town.

They might simply provide companionship and chit-chat for the lonely but this is of great benefit to all.” With over half of all people aged over 75 in the UK living alone, according to Age UK, this certainly is vital work.
Occupational therapy
Most older people wish to live independently in their own home for as long as possible, while their relatives want to make sure they stay safe and well. Occupational therapy consultants such as Stamford-based OTC can help people to plan for later life and enable them to carry out activities they find increasingly difficult with age. OTC’s therapists are degree-trained healthcare professionals registered with the Health and Care Professions Council. Their services include advising on safe ways to cook and wash, suggestions for stairlifts, extensions and level-access showers to reduce the risk of falls, and creating dementia-friendly environments. OTC also helps people to install technology in their homes that can communicate essential information to friends and relatives. For example, a family can be alerted if their loved one has fallen or if their house is too cold; whether they’ve used the kettle or microwave; if care staff have called; if they have gone out at night and/or to locate them if they get lost; or whether there is a household safety problem. Such technology enables elderly people to call for help at the touch of a button as well as to keep in touch with friends and family. “Accepting help can often mean that people
lose the skills to look after themselves,” said OTC Director Zoe Belford. “We help people to identify realistic goals they want to achieve and to keep active and engaged in activities that matter to them.”
Keeping on the move
Other companies in Stamford that help people to maintain independence at home are Mojo Partners and Scotgate Mobility. Promoting positive attitudes to ageing
These are just a few of the local companies that can help us to approach later life in a positive fashion. Others in Stamford include the Evergreen Care Trust, which promotes healthy ageing and attitudes towards older people. Alongside care services and advice, the Trust offers free training for volunteers wishing to get involved. There are also many clubs and societies such as U3A (www. stamfordu3a.org.uk) that play a role in preventing loneliness and depression amongst older people through shared interests such as history or gardening. It is this regular, social contact which has the greatest impact on preventing loneliness. Combined with practical steps such as those outlined above, growing old can be a positive, rather than a negative, experience. For the Love of Food This month, Deborah Pennell, gets up close and personal with foods said to have aphrodisiac qualities, persuades a local chef to part with a delicious recipe for a Valentines meal, and takes a look at some exciting seasonal ingredients.

O January is all but over, and following our abstinence of all things unhealthy after Christmas excesses, February brings Pancake Day swiftly followed by Valentine’s Day, and for those who have willpower and determination, the challenge of Lent. It would appear that food plays an important role in the second month of the year. And who better to ask for advice on cooking a romantic meal for your loved one, than Alison Trozzi, of Just So Italian in Stamford. Alison and her husband Danilo are Italian trained chefs who have worked in Italy and now live in the UK, setting up their business, Just so Italian in 2008. When asked who she would cook for, Alison says she would cook this meal for her husband Danilo, how wonderfully romantic!
KING PRAWN, PEA AND LEMON RISOTTO Risotto di mazzancolle e piselli Serves 4 Prep time 10 minutes Cooking time 25 minutes: • 50g butter • 1 small onion, finely chopped • 1 small garlic clove, finely chopped • 400g carnaroli or vialone nano rice • 100ml dry white wine • approximately 1.8 litres hot vegetable stock • 250g raw king prawns • 200g frozen peas • Zest and juice of 1 lemon • 3 tbsp extra virgin olive oil • 1 tbsp flat leaf parsley, finely chopped • Melt the butter in a saucepan and gently cook the onion and garlic for about 10 minutes until everything has softened and turned translucent. Add the rice to the pan and stir until all the grains are coated in fat. Then pour in the wine and stir until it has evaporated. • Start adding the stock a ladleful or two at a time, stirring the rice until it has absorbed the liquid before adding any more. After about 10 minutes add the prawns, peas, lemon zest and juice, then continue cooking gradually adding more stock. Season with salt and pepper. • The risotto is ready when the rice is soft, but still al dente. This should take about 20 minutes. Remove from the heat, stir through the extra virgin olive oil and finish with a generous sprinkling of black pepper. Serve immediately.

Foods with aphrodisiac qualities For those with romantic intentions this month, Valentine’s Day is a celebration of love, and hopefully the beginning, or continuation of an intense relationship between two people. It was therefore suggested I might delve into research on certain foods thought to have aphrodisiac qualities. With that as my brief, I have compiled a list, and short explanation of 10 such foods (remembering this is Stamford Living Magazine and not a medical journal, I have tried to create explanations to fit): AVOCADOS – contain high levels of folic acid, Vitamin B9 (provides the body with more energy) and Vitamin B6 (helps increase testosterone production) 75% COCOA OR CHOCOLATE – contains phenylethylamine – a stimulant which elicits excitement and a sense of well being. Contains natural caffeine. OYSTERS – contain large quantities of zinc, a mineral important in the production of testosterone and sperm production, plus dopamine, a brain chemical that increases desire.
TRUFFLE By weight this knobbly fungus is one of the most expensive foods in the world. The majority of truffles are still found wild, growing around the roots of oak, hazel and lime trees. Truffles are sniffed out by pigs or dogs who have been trained to recognise their pungent smell. Truffles can be found in the UK, but it is generally agreed that the finest black truffles are found in the Perigord region of France, and the finest white truffles are found in the Piedmont region of Italy. Their season is normally November to February. Storage is important – keep in an airtight container in the fridge wrapped in kitchen paper or sitting in rice (a good quality risotto rice will take up some of the flavour), this ensures they do not rot from moisture on the surface. Black truffles are peeled and can be used raw or lightly cooked, while white truffles are just wiped clean and should never be cooked. Shave over pasta, scrambled eggs; add to mashed potato or risotto, or infuse in extra virgin olive oil to create an intense truffle oil for use in so many dishes.

RED WINE – this has nothing to do with the quantity you drink! The resveratrol in red wine is a powerful antioxidant which helps decrease inflammation and gets your blood pumping! SALMON – high in Omega 3 fatty acids, important for heart health. Also helps libido by supplying building blocks for production of oestrogen, testosterone and progesterone. HOT CHILLIES – the spiciness stimulates nerve endings, which in turn releases adrenaline, increases heart rate and releases endorphins.
RHUBARB/FORCED RHUBARB We are always being told to buy fruit and vegetable ‘in season’ to get the best flavour, however, the exception to this rule is forced rhubarb. Depriving rhubarb of light makes the stems shoot upwards searching for light. Unlike sturdier outdoor grown rhubarb, this forced rhubarb has an inherent sourness and only requires light cooking. Wakefield’s famous Yorkshire Forced Rhubarb has joined the hallowed ranks of Europe’s protected foods. Yorkshire Forced Rhubarb has been elevated to the same status as Champagne and Parma Ham. If it is not from the Yorkshire rhubarb triangle, it cannot be called Yorkshire Forced Rhubarb. The leaves from rhubarb should never be eaten, as they are toxic but they will tell you how fresh the rhubarb is. Create a winter comfort food and Sunday lunch favourite, rhubarb crumble; rhubarb can also be simply sprinkled with soft brown sugar and orange zest and baked, poached in orange juice, or turned into a compote to be served with oily fish such as mackerel or rich meats like pork, or venison. It can also create a beautiful pink cordial, with sugar and water.

Do not be put off if you have tried kale before and found it tough – the chances are you did not cook it for long enough and the answer is to make sure it is chopped or shredded finely and cooked for a long period. If it is to be used in salads, blanch it, and immerse it straight into ice cold water to retain the wonderful dark green colour.
OYSTERS In the 19th Century this shellfish was plentiful and cheap, and oysters were used to bulk out dishes such as pies, soups and stews – you will still come across them on menus today in classics such as Beef, Oyster and Ale Pie. However, today they come with a price tag, as supplies have decreased and they are seen as a luxury food item. Long thought to have aphrodisiac qualities, our native Oysters remain the highest quality, with pacific and rock oysters coming into second place. Oyster aficionados would probably insist this delicacy be eaten raw to extrude the fresh salty taste of the ocean, served with a squeeze of lemon juice, freshly ground black pepper and a drop of Tabasco sauce. They can, however, be steamed, grilled or poached and I especially love them dipped in a delicate tempura batter and lightly fried. Request them from the fishmonger on the Stamford Friday market, but remember they are seasonal so will not be available all year round. KALE This most hardy of winter crops survives harsh winters where other cabbage crops may not. A true ‘super food’ and a great addition to winter

A National Treasure – Love Hearts I have to admit to being a huge fan of these much-loved sweets. Sour and fizzy, I use them to decorate cupcakes if I can save them long enough. Therefore, I was interested to read that back in 2014, Swizzels, the makers of Love Heart sweets, ran a competition asking for new designs to celebrate their 60th anniversary; they were inundated with suggestions, and the winning messages were stamped on their famous sweets. New phrases included ‘take a selfie,’ ‘tweet me,’ ‘yolo,’ ‘marry me,’ ‘think pink,’ and even more locally orientated phrases such as ‘alreet pet’! As a mother of youngish children, they were able to help me out with deciphering the meanings of several of these phrases, and I have to say I it was a forward thinking person who suggested the move to broaden the repertoire of our humble Love Heart sweets. For those not in the know ‘Yolo’, I am told by my 9-year-old, with a look of ‘do you really not know what that stands for Mummy?’; apparently means ‘You only live once’, and ‘think pink’ brings a politically correct sweetie into the Love Heart fold. Sadly, I cannot claim to have ever unwrapped sweets quoting either of these phrases when eating my way through quite a few packets of an old sweet shop favourite, but on further research I find that you can now pre-order Love Hearts with your own personalised packaging – perfect for weddings, birthdays or any other celebration. Valentine’s Day would not be the same without a packet of these fizzy little suckers. www.swizzels.com

Take advantage of their very short season with a romantic Valentine’s night cocktail Blood Orange Mojito Makes 2 drinks • 10 fresh mint leaves, plus 2 sprigs for garnishing • 2 fl oz sugar syrup* • 1.5fl oz white rum • 2 fl oz fresh lime juice (from about 2 limes) • 12 fl oz sparkling water, or as needed • 1 blood orange, halved • Ice • Fill 2 tall glasses with ice. In a glass jug or cocktail shaker, combine the mint leaves and sugar syrup. Gently muddle the mint leaves and sugar syrup together, being careful not to tear them Stir in the rum and lime juice. • Pour into the glasses, making sure to get a few mint leaves into each. Add the sparkling water, leaving a little room at the top and gently stir. Finally, squeeze the juice of half a blood orange over each drink. Garnish with a mint sprig and serve. *To make sugar syrup; stir together 1/4 cup caster sugar with 1/4 cup hot water until it dissolves. Leave to cool. This makes 3floz syrup, which can be stored and used as needed*

YEARS ago, the first satellite (Sputnik) was launched. All the superpowers have used them to take high definition pictures of each other for decades, but now these cameras are being used for more peaceful purposes. The European Environment Agency (EEA) has been taking HD pictures of the UK from outer-space to give us a focussed picture of what every corner of our country really looks like. Over the last 20 or so years, there has been an imbalance in the British housing market with demand outstripping supply, meaning the average value of a property in the SKDC area has risen by 320%, taking an average value from £48,500 in 1995 to £203,500 today. Using the information from the EEA and data by Sheffield University with their ‘Corine-Land Cover Project’, some thought-provoking data has emerged: Just 3.47% of SKDC area is ‘built on’. In the study, land classified as ‘urban fabric’ has land which has between 50% - 100% of the land surface built on, (meaning up to a half might be gardens or small parks, but the majority is developed). Of that amount, less than 0.1% of that land is intensively built on (where 80% - 100% is built on – still leaving 20% for gardens). The use of the land is split up with 0.49% allocated to airfields, 1.49% as sports facilities, 85.64% is arable farmland and the rest being made up of various other minor types such as pastures and waterways, etc. The assumption that vast bands of our local area have been concreted over doesn’t stand up to inspection. However, the effect of housing undoubtedly spreads beyond its actual footprint, in terms of noise, pollution and roads. Residents and local authorities are going to have to put their weight into building more homes. There is going to have to be compromise on both sides, otherwise house prices will continue to rise exponentially in the future and Stamford’s youngsters won’t be able to buy their own home, meaning rents and demand for private rented accommodation in Stamford can (and will) also grow exponentially. Stamford Indoor Football Group on the hunt for new recruits A newly launched Stamford football group is looking for like-minded individuals to join its ranks for a weekly kick-around.

HE group is searching for locals who want to keep fit and play football, but don’t want to join a league or team. Stamford Indoor Football organiser Danny Morgan said there was a need to have an environment where people can play competitively, but in a more friendly atmosphere. “In both Peterborough and Brighton, I’ve always managed to find groups of people who loved to play football every week without needing to join a league. For some people, joining a team is a little intimidating, it’s a big commitment, and sometimes you just fancy a casual game of football with others who don’t take it too seriously and to keep fit. Long-term Barn Hill resident Richard Barry sadly passed away in December. Here, editor Nicholas Rudd-Jones shares some excerpts from favourite articles over the years
A Tribute to Richard Barry R
ICHARD sent me an extract from his selfpublished autobiography back in October: ‘In 2002 Nicholas RuddJones started to publish a monthly magazine Stamford Living. Between 2002 and 2015 I wrote 114 pieces for Nick. He accepted and paid for 113. The rejected one was too contentious, and the subject of the piece said that “she’d see us in court” if Nick published it. We binned it instead. ‘I thoroughly enjoyed writing for Nick. The pay was modest, but the favourable comments I sometimes received from Stamford readers more than made up for that. I retired from Nick’s list of writers in 2015, which marks the end of my working life. 57 years in total 1958-2015.’ Richard was always erudite, well researched (I bet the binned article was right), funny, touching, with a broad range of interests and a natural curiosity. I hope to capture just a little of these qualities in the following excerpts: MOTORBIKING AROUND STAMFORD – JUNE 2002 – OUR FIRST EVER ISSUE!
Above all, motorcycling is tremendous fun. In the nineteen twenties people used to go ‘motoring’, taking the car for a spin, just for the fun of it. Today’s traffic makes that almost impossible for the car driver. But not for the motorcyclist – even gridlock on the M6 can be fun, filtering and threading one’s way through the traffic, every nerve tingling, every sense alert to the possibility that some fool will jump lanes. The hint of danger that is ever present when biking is one of its great attractions - that delicious prickling of the skin that comes from a mix of fear and adrenalin, a feeling hard to find elsewhere in the ultra-safe lives we lead today. But the real treats are to be found riding, just for the delight of it, in the narrow country roads to the west of Stamford. My own favourite is the lane from Ketton to Barrowden and on to Seaton. Over the tops of the hedges the motorcyclist – but not the low-seated car driver – can catch distant glimpses of that masterpiece of High Victoriana, the Harringworth Viaduct. Another of the pleasures of motorcycling is its sense of camaraderie. In a way that car drivers haven’t done since 1910, motorcyclists still acknowledge each other when passing, by a nod or a wave or – on the Continent – by a rather strange foot-waggle. And a biker will always stop for a fellow biker who looks in difficulties. It’s all rather old-fashioned and charming. SHIPBUILDING IN STAMFORD OCTOBER 2002

Anyone with their finger on the zeitgeist will tell you that red trousers are riding a fashion wave that has yet to crest. and look down Hudds Mill Lane, a stone’s throw from Morrison’s. Through the hedge you can glimpse the upside-down steel hull of what looks like a small aircraft carrier. Actually, it’s Graham ‘Mad Dog’ Morgan’s get-away ship. From Virginia Cottage, the nerve centre from where he masterminds Stamford’s shipbuilding industry, Graham explains. “The Stamford by-pass was going to be built right here, which would have completely ruined the cottage. So, we thought we’d build ourselves a ship and sail away to a new life as water-gypsies.” RED TROUSERS - DECEMBER 2011
I thought I’d been married all these years to an unshockable woman. Until, that is, I went to Paul Richman and bought a pair of red trousers. Not just any red, but a true 7,000 Angstrom scarlet (non-techies would call it Pantone 032). “What in God’s name induced you to buy red trousers?” she gasped. Good question. Many men pride themselves on being immune to the vagaries of fashion, and look with contempt at the Sunday supplement ‘style’ sections. But. of course. that attitude is complete piffle. We are all slaves to fashion. Just think of wine: my father-in-law went to his grave never having bought or served a rosé. Men just didn’t. Scroll forward 20 years, fashions have changed, and now real men do drink rosé -- I’m reliably informed that it’s available in the SAS mess near Hereford. And so, it is with red trousers. Anyone with their finger on the zeitgeist will tell you that red
trousers are riding a fashion wave that has yet to crest. Whether the craze originated with Hussars, wine merchants or sex-obsessed gamekeepers, who wears red trousers today? An authoritative survey carried out in London recently identified four main groups: Fogies (24%); Toffs (48%); Hipsters (17%) and Eccentrics (11%). Only one surprise there – the rise of the Hipster. Coaching inns, stabling, and related trades brought great prosperity to Stamford, and it soon became a key transportation hub of the East Midlands. Today we think of regional transport hubs in terms of aviation. But in terms of transport movements, Stamford at its coaching peak was as busy as Stansted today. This is quite a claim, but I believe it’s supported by the evidence. The Civil Aviation Authority publishes traffic movements for every UK airport. The top four are Heathrow (1262 per day), Gatwick (544), Manchester (356) and Stansted (315). So, Stamford (360 coach movements), displaces Stansted in today’s busyness stakes. Richard was also very active helping improve the fabric of the town, two notable achievements being his part in the All Saints’ sundial project and the re-landscaping of St Michael’s Churchyard. We will all miss him very much, and will forever feel enriched by his great company.
