Picture of the month Stamford is starting to bloom Preparations for this year’s entry into the prestigious Stamford in Bloom (SiB) competition are well underway. Communal areas such as the Bus Station, Bath Row and the planters on the High Street have all been cleared, cleaned, weeded and prepped for planting thanks to the help of a band of dedicated volunteers. Anyone wanting to show general support of the SiB project can make a small donation (£2 minimum) and pick up a SiB label, complete with ribbons, designed to be hung on or around the front of your property to show your support for the project. Town residents are being asked to decorate their front entrances (porches/ gardens/front doors etc) in support of the overall SiB competition entry. It’s a chance to get creative with ideas which could include flower arrangements, garden tool arrangements, and other, more wacky ideas, to stage at the front of your property. Door fronts on the official route of the Stamford in Bloom competition will be judged and the winning creation will be awarded a magnum of champagne. Local Artists (part two) Spring has sprung – time for fresh art work to freshen up your home Selecting art for your home is an incredibly personal choice. Some people are inspired by provocative pieces which stimulate discussion; others prefer to display aesthetically pleasing art, which complements the style of their interiors. To me, in the home environment at least, the best art makes your heart sing every time you look at it, touch it, use it. I’m not just talking about paintings; updating everyday items (such as your crockery) with something truly beautiful can really help to enhance your mood. Who wouldn’t feel an extra spring in their step after sipping their morning coffee from a beautifully hand thrown mug? Fenella Beauchamp ‘Painting is part of my DNA; I need to do it to nourish my creativity. My latest work has taken inspiration from the Golden Age of the Dutch Old Masters; I’ve created large still life paintings of flowers. This year, I’m going to combine this with screen printing onto the canvas, to add a more complex dimension to my work. ‘I absolutely love working on commissions; I thrive on the challenge of creating a beautiful piece of art for my clients. Commissions come from as far afield as Brazil, but if you don’t have the budget for an original painting, prints of my work start at £150. ‘I’d really like to do some more commissions and I love working with interior designers for their clients. In addition to paintings, I create iPad prints, which can be printed up to A1 size in very high resolution on watercolour paper, prices start from £85 for A3 prints.’

René Viner ‘I am a mixed-media artist who draws inspiration from nature’s forms and structures. The sky, a constant changing palette, is of particular interest to me. In 2018, the themes I’ll be working on will be impressions of landscape and the sky, as always. ‘I have a number of projects brewing which I hope to bring to life in 2018; I’m especially excited by my new ceramic Wall Art which is the perfect marriage of my paintings and ceramics. Lizzy Standbrook ‘I love painting big skies, trees, seaside scenes and I’m inspired to paint by the places I’ve been and the people I meet. I use watercolours in non-traditional ways - I never have liked colouring in the lines! I usually paint on large canvasses and then mix this with brightly coloured inks and metallic fabric paints. I use black inks and pens to draw over my paintings, giving them a sketchy, informal look and lots of movement and life. ‘One of the best things anyone has ever said about my work is “the more I look the more I see.”’

‘The core of my work is form and function. I work with traditional techniques to create stoneware ceramics that are a pleasure to use in everyday life. I’m continuously trialling new glaze combinations and usually use the reaction of two glazes to create a unique surface. My range of domestic stoneware ceramics is continuously evolving and is now available in four colours. The latest colour I have just launched is midnight blue. Prices range from £14 for a small jug to £45 for larger bowls. ‘This year, I’ll be exhibiting at The Stamford Pottery Market (May 6-7) and as part of Peterborough Open Studios later in the summer. My work is available through Gallery Stamford, Wistow Gallery, Cambridge Contemporary Crafts and Harriman & Co in Leicester.’

Debbie Boon ‘After graduating from Art College, I embarked on a career in graphic design, before working as a children’s book illustrator. This instilled in me the desire to create character within the painted image; an intention which is never far from the surface. ‘My work is inspired by two passions; the sheer joy of bringing a blank canvas to life through painting, and the delight gained from observing and representing the striking (and sometimes quirky) rural characters and vast blue skies of Eastern England. Whether depicting animals, people or places, I want to convey a deeply personal impression of each subject, through a progression of expressive paint techniques, colour, light and movement. ‘I create my work on canvas using heavy bodied acrylics with a rich, almost buttery texture and a variety of glazes. Working quickly at the initial stage to block in the main elements of the composition, I then layer my paints to create depth and vibrancy. AVING moved into their family home in 1994, Mr and Mrs B realised it was time to plan a programme of improvement to update the property now that their two grown-up sons had moved into homes of their own. When it came to the kitchen, the couple knew they were after a light, open plan room with a contemporary feeling but were at a loss as to where to begin. Mrs B spotted an attractive, well planned kitchen in some advertising by local design specialists, Classic Stamford. The couple invited Classic’s Project Manager, Dan Barford to visit in the hope he could provide a starting point. “Dan’s particular talent is being able to help the client visualise the end result,” explains Mrs B. “Not only could he predict how the space could be used but was able to provide us with fabulous computer generated images in under 48 hours so we could really see how the end result might look in detail.” The couple sensibly acquired two or three other quotes but chose Classic. “We were impressed by Classic’s efficiency and attention to detail,” remembers Mr B. “Classic had a team in place to co-ordinate and complete everything from ground work to the plumbing, heating and electrical work so we felt confident from the very start.” Before work began, Dan brought the whole construction team to meet Mr and Mrs B, to ‘walk’ the house and to make sure all plans were practical. Within a couple of hours, the couple had an outline of which activity was planned for each day, how it would impact them and who to expect on site which was very much appreciated. “We were combining three rooms into one, knocking down walls and everything that entails. The job was large and invasive but the team were always polite and jovial and we all sat down at the end of each day with a cup of tea to discuss the day’s progress and the plan for tomorrow which I found very reassuring,” adds Mrs B. Ten weeks later, a small dining room, dated kitchen and underused conservatory had been transformed into a bright, open kitchen diner with bifold doors leading out onto the patio. Mrs B loves her central island which provides a sociable focal point to the kitchen, as well as plenty of storage in the form of Shaker style cupboards painted in two shades of grey for timeless appeal. The couple entertain family and friends frequently at their stunning handmade extending table by Danish company, Bo Concept with matching two tone chairs by the same company. “We did get rid of lots of older furniture in favour of cleaner lines and a more contemporary feel for the new kitchen and it does feel lighter as a result,” says Mrs B. “We enjoyed our first family Christmas here last year with our sons and their partners and it was lovely to be so warm and cosy in the new kitchen with the snow outside; we are looking forward to having the doors open this summer and enjoying the warmer weather too.”

OTHERING Sunday has been going for approximately 400 years and Stamford marks this weekend every year in an extra special way by welcoming in the Mid-Lent Fair. As the large lorries and trailers swoop into Broad Street and Bath Row, many mums are having homemade creations bestowed upon them by their beloved offspring. If the promise of an exciting trip to the fair isn’t enough to quell the Mothering Sunday madness, every fourth Sunday in Lent, fathers and their children have the ideal opportunity to mark their appreciation for the matriarchal figure in their lives by bestowing cups of tea in bed, hugs, kisses and of course the obligatory present. If you decide to opt for the retail option, Stamford has a plethora of independent outlets offering precious present procuring opportunities. Nicholas Rudd-Jones caught up with Neeta from Flawless Faces recently. She has had a busy year last year with the opening of Flawless Body, so we thought we would see what her plans were for this year.

Flawless Faces – A New Way of Doing Things “A

FTER an extremely busy Christmas, January is always a good time to take stock,” she told SL. “I have spent a lot of time speaking to clients and understanding what is important to them. There is a lot of economic uncertainty at the moment and spend on non-essential items is always a consideration. Clients love the fact that they can just walk to us if they are in town or park around the corner. They love the promotions we run and think our loyalty scheme is one of the most generous in Stamford.” Having known Neeta for the last 8 years it is always exciting to see what she is going to come up with next having built Flawless Faces into a thriving business from scratch as a mother of two young boys. “The town is growing. We have a number of new developments that are bringing new people to the town. Whilst for business owners this is a positive it also brings its challenges, such as more traffic. In some cases, people want to be in and out of town as quickly as possible and they have a to-do list of a number of things while they are here - my initial thoughts were how can we help and reduce the stress!” I thought we could spend the next hour just talking about this. I asked her about the new trends in the sector. “Lashes and the different types of lashes available seems to be growing by the day and so does the people offering the service. However, this is an art form and going on a course for a day does not make you an expert – it takes years of experience to ensure that they look as natural as possible. Secondly, I see that time is a premium for people - spending several hours getting treatments done is now for the few not the many.” So the obvious question was: What are you going to do? “Well!” she said, “there are three things we are planning: • “We are introducing an Express Lash & Brow Bar – we have always been the place for Brows and Lashes. But I don’t want to stop just there. We now have three individuals who can do threading in the authentic way (it used to be just me!). You can either Walk in, Book Online or Call on the day - it’s that simple!” It is great to see that Neeta has listened to her clients and taken to heart what they have said. We agree that time is becoming a premium and therefore the Express Treatments will be a great addition. For those wanting to book ahead, that provision still remains. We like the fact that promotions that clients value have been made a permanent feature. This in itself is a brave move, but Neeta is not one to shy away from big decisions. We get the feeling that if something is right for the client, she will find away of doing it. I like her continued focus on the customer and adapting her proposition to what customers are asking for. Above all she is recognising how people are living and how she can play her part in making client’s lives less stressful. In our discussion she continually talked about the team and how they worked together as a family unit. She continues to grow the team and shared that a recent role advertised attracted 108 applications – this says something in itself, she has got something very special and very right.

his month, Batemans Auctioneers on Ryhall Road is holding an exciting sale of James Bond memorabilia. The lot will occupy a special section of the 3 March sale at 11am, one of Batemans’ regular monthly sales of fine art, antiques and collectibles. Items include film posters, toys, models and an almost entire collection of first editions, among them Casino Royale, the 1953 novel in which 007 first made an appearance. Batemans was founded in 2001 by Ron Bateman and his daughter Kate, and is still a thriving family business. Today, it is run by Managing Director and Valuer Greg Bateman who took over the helm seven years ago. Ron is still very much involved as a Director and Senior Valuer, while fellow Director Kate can often be seen valuing items on popular BBC antiques programmes such as Bargain Hunt and Flog It!

Half an hour up the A1 near Grantham, this is a brilliant place for children of all ages with lots of family-friendly attractions including the discovery centre, café, maze and all the parkland where you can bring a ball to kick about, or your own picnic. Celebrations for the anniversary take place on Thursday March 29 with Blue Peter’s Peter Purves who officially opened the playground back in 1978. There will be face painting, outdoor theatre, bush craft and archery among the activities on offer. Spring has sprung! And no more so than at Rutland Farm Park in Oakham. My two adore visiting all the animals and riding the toy tractors in the play area.This is a wonderful, authentic farm experience which lets you get an up-close view of all the typical farm animals and even some Shetland ponies and llamas as well. A perfect family trip, especially if you have a soft spot for woolly lambs and little calves at this time of year. There is a lovely tea room for a drink or bite to eat and Freya was kept occupied by the supply of farm-themed books to read while you wait. A family ticket costs £16 and it’s free for those under 3. GROWING IN MY GARDEN NOW

Reliable primula and muscari herald spring with a welcome splash of early colour. Once they are settled, muscari will spread like wildfire. If you didn’t plant bulbs in the autumn, they are available from the plant stalls at Stamford market. I like to put a few in temporary vintage containers and bring them inside for a longer lasting alternative to cut flowers. Once you’ve had enough of them indoors, plant outside to enjoy next year.

Whilst you’re waiting to get properly busy outside again, take a trip to Brightwater Gardens at Saxby, Lincolnshire, to see a true garden of the 21st century, which combines traditional elements with a modern sensibility. There’s just time to catch the quarter of a mile winter walk (until Sunday March 4) with 40,000 winter irises, snowdrops, willows, flame-stemmed dogwoods, pleached red-twigged lime trees and ghostly white Himalayan birch. TWIGGY SPRING WREATH You will need: • Some thin, whippy branches such as willow or honeysuckle • Pussy willow stems • Primroses • Small wooden eggs (try Rapport at 3, St Mary’s Street, Stamford) • Florists’ wire • Raffia

What to do: 1. Take a few of the thin branches and carefully fashion them into a circle, fastening at the top with thin florists’ wire. It’s easier if you start with a couple of branches, as some are more flexible than others. You can add more as you go along if you like a thicker wreath, fixing with wire as you

proceed. 2. Once the circle is firmly secured, add your choice of spring flowers, twining in some pussy willow, and threading some eggs and, as a temporary decoration, some primrose heads. Fix in place with wire. 3. Add a raffia loop at the top and hang in a window or on a door.

A vertical garden With outside space at a premium for many people, the Living Wall is one garden trend that looks like staying around. It may look complicated, but Dobbies have come up with an easy way to get the look by selling planters which are specially adapted for the purpose. You can build your wall on any solid wall or fence. In our photo, wood has been used to create a custom wall that can be moved from room to room but you can build straight on to the side of your house, a garden fence or even a sturdy shed. Screw in rows of 5cm by 2.5cm treated battens 38cm apart to fill the space, checking with a spirit level as you go to make sure they’re straight. Now screw in the planters. Using an electric screwdriver and working from the bottom up, attach the plastic planters to the battens. You can then click and lock the planters into each other and build up your wall in staggered rows. Starting at the top, water your wall with a hose or watering can. The reservoir system is designed to keep plants watered for up to two weeks. Fill the planters with your chosen plants (try Carex ‘Evergold’, Heuchera ‘Boysenberry’ and Ficinia ‘Ice Crystal’) using 12-13cm pots and either remove the plants from their pots and plant them in the planters, or to make changing the scheme really easy, place the pot directly into each planter, making sure the pot touches the reservoir base. Dobbies has this

advice for success with a living wall. • If you’re attaching your green wall to the side of a house, attach a waterproof membrane to the wall before you begin, to prevent damp. • If you choose to take your plants out of their nursery pots and plant them directly into the planters, use one of their specially designed filters under each plant, to stop leaves blocking the reservoir outlet. • This specific system needs watering around every two to three days, depending on climate (unless you’ve chosen to add an automatic irrigation system), more in summer - check by sticking a finger into the soil to see if the compost is dry. • If you’ve chosen flowering plants, snip out faded flowers to encourage more later in the season. Foliage plants such as heucheras and ferns should be tidied up by snipping off tatty leaves, as needed. Annuals, in particular, benefit from a liquid feed every couple of weeks in summer, although any display that’s in place for any length of time will need feeding to keep it looking its best. Now that 2018 is under way there are bound to be many of you who are planning holidays, and regardless of whether it’s home or abroad, you need somewhere or someone to look after your pets. Or do you?

OLIDAYS in the UK become evermore popular as those cheap flights and last minute cheap holidays are more or less a thing of the past. And if you’re up for a spot of self catering then there’s an abundance of cottage holiday websites who either specialise in pet friendly properties like www.petspyjamas. com or have a filter option to showcase which properties are dog friendly such as www. mulberrycottages.com and www.suffolksecrets.co.uk to name but a few. Another option, especially if you’re jetting off abroad, is to use a ‘home from home’ service if you don’t like to use boarding kennels. Whilst it’s fair to say that catteries are commonly used for those feline friends who are possibly a little easier to please and normally please themselves, some of us have canine companions who we like to know are interacting with humans in someone’s home and like to have those creature comforts. Those alternatives to kennels can be found through companies like Barking Mad, a service that collects your dog and its belongings, takes it to someone else’s home whilst you’re away, and brings them home on your return. Endearing updates are sent via text when your four legged friend arrives at their host’s home to show how well they’re settling in and again after their first night’s sleep. You are then greeted by a postcard which is written by the host family to tell you how much they have enjoyed having your dog (or dogs) and how much your dog has been enjoying itself. There are obviously costs involved with this type of service and it’s not always the cheapest option, but the attention to detail is exceptionally high and and the care/love for your dog whilst you are away is unconditional. The team at Barking Mad are always on call should the hosts need them and I have seen this myself on one of the very rare occasions that they needed to be called out at a weekend to provide a helping hand. Another recent addition to the pet sitting

scene is www.borrowmydoggy.com. On first appearance it works a little like a dating website whereby you put in your details and your dog’s general details and it’s requirements to be matched to people in your area who would like to look after a dog. It now has over 500,000 members in the UK and Ireland and promotes dog walking as well as dog boarding. Quite simple when

you think about it, and a way of helping out a neighbour who needs a bit of company, or vice versa helping a neighbour who needs assistance in looking after their dog because of work commitments or other things that life can throw at us. The dress

Minimal dresses are still in vogue but with bigger skirts and whimsical additions such as full-blown sleeves, capes and subtle, romantic silk flowers. Hair trends

This year, the look for hair is predicted to be low key – instead of a formal chignon, consider wearing your hair in a loose braid or down with natural, soft curls. Go for fairy-tale flowers and lace woven through a half-up, half-down style for a really dreamy look.

What better way to announce your date than on beautiful handmade paper and using the latest look? Marble-effect designs or watercolour washes are predicted to be the background for many invites in 2018, with metallic lettering enduringly popular. Transparent materials are set to be a big thing, with glass and acrylics providing an elegant background for flowers and accessories. You’ll see this look used from “ghost” chairs to translucent marquees. What better excuse for

Floral favourites

Bridal bouquets are still expected to follow the trend for free form, with greenery still a strong influence, as it was in 2017; this year, however, sees the addition of overblown blooms such Chinese dogwood. Flower walls and arches still make dramatic statements and provide stunning backdrops for photos, but another fashion is the use of exotic houseplants to dress the venue.

Ultra Violet

Pantone’s 2018 “Color of the Year” – Ultra Violet – is set to be everywhere: in floral arrangements, in other decorations and for bridesmaid dresses. Pantone describes it as “a blue-based purple that is enigmatic and complex, and suggests the mysteries of the cosmos, the intrigue of what lies ahead and the discoveries beyond where we are now”.

Adopting a theme is an effective way of tying the day together. With a Royal Wedding this year, the quintessentially English look is expected to stay firmly in fashion. Expect Meghan’s choices to influence weddings taking place after her own marriage to Harry in May.

Local love story Bio scientist James and accountant Alix met on a night away in Leeds that James had been persuaded to attend by his friend who worked with Alix. Three years later, James proposed during a surprise weekend away in Berlin. After moving into their home together and having their son, Harry, they set about planning a winter wedding. The mood: We decided to embrace the cold and planned a relaxed, personal day with plenty of fun, especially as lots of children were attending.

The ceremony: Crowland Abbey (in the parish in which Alix’s parents live), with choir and church bells.

The palette: Shimmering whites with touches of silver and grey, accompanied by twinkling fairy lights, flickering tea lights and sparkly silver candelabras.

The reception: The Barn at Barnsdale Lodge. Guests were welcomed to a beautifully dressed room with a warming Winter Pimm’s, followed by a three-course meal of hearty comfort food. The children had activity packs, which included games, and the sweet-toothed bride put jars of her favourite candy on a dressing table provided by Lola Rose. Instead of favours, money was donated to the Alzheimer’s trust. The table plan was inspired by the periodic table (a nod to James’s profession), and the couple also provided a photo booth with props and a Polaroid camera for guests to take snaps. Guests were encouraged to leave messages in a dictionary, circling a word to best describe the couple, and to write notes on wooden love hearts. A string trio played throughout the drinks reception and dinner, then the band (The Aesthetic) struck up and kept the dance floor filled throughout the evening.

The dress: A classic A-line, ivory, beaded wedding dress with lots of detail, complemented by a cathedral-length veil and pearl earrings. The bridesmaids: They wore silver multiway dresses that allowed them each to show off their individual style. The flowers: Alix’s hand-tied bouquet and all the flowers were created by Rebecca from Parsons and consisted of large-headed white and ivory roses, white freesias, white and ivory spray roses, brunia berries, senecio foliage and eucalyptus, with ivory ribbon and pearl pins. The bridesmaid’s bouquets were pretty gypsophila, and the flower girl had a flower crown using the same flowers as in the bride’s bouquet. The groomsmen had sprigs of gypsophila as their buttonholes. In the church an arch of passifloras complemented the flowers in the bride’s bouquet.

The photographer: We were aware of Elli through this magazine, as James’s mum [a designer at Local Living] has worked with her many times. She completely captured the whole day fabulously.

Top tip: Make use of your groomsmen and bridesmaids – they can be a huge help. To ensure our day ran smoothly, they all had something to help out with. It meant the day ran without a hitch. Corn Exchange Theatre Jean Orpin and Sue Lee visited the Corn Exchange during last year’s Heritage Open Day Weekend and were amazed to discover the extensive use of the building as a theatre.

Beginnings The first permanent Corn Exchange building, an arcade with a glass roof, was erected outside Browne’s Hospital in 1839. The merchants soon complained, wanting a proper building, so the arches were dismantled and used elsewhere. The Black Swan opposite was demolished and a new Corn Exchange, designed by Edward Browning, was built in 1858. It opened for trading in January 1859. Merchants displayed samples in named trade stands.

Within a couple of weeks of opening the building was being used for live entertainment and from then onwards the building, which could seat 600, was always used for entertainment, as well as for trading grain.

19thC & early 20thC Entertainment Many London theatre companies included the Corn Exchange in their tour schedules and Stamfordians had the opportunity to see the popular artists and productions of the day as you can see from the posters. It was also an important local venue with a diversity of uses - balls and parties, political rallies, flower shows, furniture sales, charity events and even for roller skating – the floor was said to be excellent.

Later uses

In 1920 the Picture House moved here from All Saints’ Street, then in 1925 the building caught fire. It had a poor-quality rebuild but reopened in 1927. During the 1950s it started to be used for antique sales. Today it has been restored for use as an important entertainment venue. 54

The Corn Exchange Theatre Project (by Michael Lee, Trustee) As the new Millennium approached, the Corn Exchange building was being leased as an Antique Centre. The owners were trying hard to maintain the building but sadly with not much rental income they were failing. The 1925 asbestos roof was leaking like a sieve. Toilet facilities were lacking. The lease allowed for two local amateur shows per year by The Stamford Operatic Society and the Stamford Pantomime Players. With two years to run the Antique Centre relinquished the lease. There was a good prospect that the hall would be sold and lost to the local community as a place for entertainment. Four local theatre lovers decided to try and save the building and put in a bid to obtain the lease. In their words: “We succeeded in getting the remaining years and were able to formulate our plans and help start a new business for Stamford by subletting the hall to Batemans Auctions. “Our plans became more and more ambitious with encouragement from the Chief Executive for SKDC, the Town Council and people of Stamford and district. Helped by SKDC, plans were completed and Planning Permission granted to construct a new theatre within the existing building with new dressing rooms, retail shop area, bar and restaurant and heritage room. Over the next two years there was great activity raising funds and getting the support of local firms and individuals. The support was amazing: local firms promised and delivered over the next eight years. Free labour, plant and materials were donated. Hundreds of local volunteers learnt building skills in-house and the work of building and restoration moved forward. We were also lucky to have highly skilled volunteer management for building and administration. “We optimistically applied to English Heritage and the Arts Council for grants, both sadly rejected us due to our lack of previous experience. They thought we would not be able to complete it. How wrong they were. They did not bargain on the determination of the people of Stamford. “The overall cost was more than £2m but we have now been running as a full-time theatre for 10 years. It proved to be just what the local community wanted and with their support and all the wonderful help of our theatre volunteers we continue to improve the quality of our stage and theatre. We continue to run a very successful programme of amateur and professional shows.”

Corn Exchange Posters Ætherscope Jan 1875

The Ætherscope and Proteus were optical inventions refined by ‘Professor’ Pepper (actually a conjuror) for use in the theatre. Each performance had several parts with different illusions. In this performance, Storm of Thoughts (a poem by Schiller) was followed by a ‘metaphysical drama’, The Haunted House by Dickens - the story for which the Ætherscope was developed. It created ghost illusions also used effectively in dramatic productions of Dickens’ Christmas Carol.

Court Minstrels May 1878

Several Minstrel companies visited the Corn Exchange in the late 19th C. It was clearly a popular entertainment in the town. They performed ballads, dances and comic burlesque accompanied by string and brass bandsmen. All were dressed in costumes of the 18th C Court - coats, knee breeches, stockings and buckled shoes. The Court Minstrels were managed by the Livermore Brothers, builders of family Music Halls, who were considered the finest company.

Aladdin - 1884

Roberts, Archer & Barlett’s Dramatic Company (formerly Roberts & Archer) brought pantomime to Stamford throughout the 1880s. It was a touring company playing for a couple of nights and Aladdin appeared from Eastbourne to South Shields in 1884. Arthur Jefferson, Stan Laurel’s father, had a contract with the company and possibly came to Stamford. Roberts & Archer also brought other productions, including The Shaughraun and The Magistrate here.

Mikado - 1887

The successful partnership of Gilbert and Sullivan produced a number of operettas frequently brought to Stamford by the famous D’Oyly Carte Company in the 1880s and 1890s. This poster was for The Mikado which opened in London in 1885 and performed here in 1887. It was their most popular production in England and America, helped by exotic costumes and picturesque scenery. Gilbert and Sullivan are still popular with Stamford audiences today.

The Silver King January 1888

This was a well-known and popular melodrama. Wilson Barrett, charismatic actor and Theatre Manager of The Grand, Leeds and The Princess’s Theatre, London, controlled the Provincial Rights, so advertising used his name to attract audiences although he was not involved in this production. Its six Acts included romance, a jealous lover, murder, a pardon, reconciliation and a fortune from a silver mine. It was billed as “The Event of The Season!!!”

Mr M B Spurr April 1892

“Don’t argue, go and see Mel B Spurr” was a catch phrase used by Melancthon Spurr. He was a Yorkshire solicitor turned singer, musician and writer known for his effective facial expressions as he performed recitations with musical accompaniment. The idea of a ‘Musical & Literary Entertainment’ sounds more highbrow than it probably was - it was a Smoking Concert which means the audience was all male.

Political Meeting July 1892

This promoted Henry Cust (Belton estate heir) who hoped to retain his Stamford seat won in a byelection. The MP for Sleaford, Agriculture Minister in the current Conservative Cabinet supported him. The Mercury reported that E P Monckton of Fineshade had an accident on his way home afterwards. Cust won by 124 votes. (Known as a womaniser Cust is acknowledged as father of Lady Diana Cooper).

Dorothy October 1892

Described as a Pastoral Comic Opera, Dorothy had a record-breaking run in London at the Gaiety, Prince of Wales and Lyric Theatres. Performed here for three nights under the patronage of the Mayor, Marquis of Exeter, Lord Burghley MP and Lord Lindsey the company promised a Powerful Chorus, Magnificent Wardrobe, Splendid Scenery and Trained Foxhounds! The issue of feminism was gently raised while the humour arose largely from mistaken identity. The restored Corn Exchange once again attracts national and international artists. This month it is the only local venue to host American singer and song-writer Beth Nielson Chapman’s 2018 UK Tour. It will feature her newly released album, Hearts of Glass.

A Hunt in History H

ERE in Stamford you could say that things are getting a little cosy, with all the new homes popping up everywhere as word gets round that Stamford really is the best place in the UK to live. However, with more homes comes less green space, smaller gardens and problematic parking but what will never ever change is the fact that just a short walk away, we have the 13,000-acre estate of Burghley House. How much do you really know about Burghley? Perhaps you know quite a lot already, the 6th Marquess of Exeter certainly led a very interesting life as an Olympian and Politician amongst other things. What you might not know is that many years ago, Burghley House had their very own hunt, with their own kennels and a pack of hounds. They even met at The George Hotel in Stamford once or twice a year. As many grand estates did, Burghley has been home to a hunting pack of hounds at various times since the late 16th Century and although records have not survived, there is evidence of a thriving hunt from the 19th and 20th Centuries. Jon Culverhouse, the Curator at Burghley House, filled me in; “In 1898 the 5th Marquess of Exeter started a private pack of harriers (a smaller type of hound), with which he hunted by invitation in the Fitzwilliam Thursday country and some of the Belvoir and Cottesmore country. They became foxhounds at the turn of the century, but members retained their green coats and in 1915 they were absorbed by the Fitzwilliam.” Thankfully, the kennels at Burghley wouldn’t remain empty for long. David Cecil, 6th Marquess of Exeter, was involved with hunting throughout his life. In 1935, as Lord Burghley, he restarted the pack and hunted similar country by invitation until 1939 when he took over the Mastership of the East Sussex. “On his inheritance and return to Burghley in

As many grand estates did, Burghley has been home to a hunting pack of hounds at various times since the late 16th Century 1957, he brought from the Old Berkshire, of which he had been the Master for four seasons, some 30 couple of hounds and restarted his pack,” Jon tells me. He then proceeded to hunt by invitation, the west end of the Fitzwilliam Thursday country, their Warboys country and all the Cottesmore country to the east of the A1. During the early 1960s and 70s, the Burghley Foxhounds was one of very few remaining private packs in England. They hunted on Wednesdays and Saturdays and provided sport for a large number of local residents, particularly farmers and their children. The Joint Master with Lord Exeter was Captain A.F. Goddard-Jackson. Lord Exeter normally hunted the hounds himself with Mr W. Garratt as Kennel Huntsman, and Mr W. Campling and Mr J. Smith were Whippers-in. Jon says that by the mid-1970s, Lord Exeter’s arthritis – a legacy of his sporting career as an Olympic hurdler - was making it extremely difficult for him to spend long periods of time on horseback, which made hunting all day a bit tricky! Agricultural depression and punitive taxation were also factors that forced his decision to disband the Burghley Foxhounds. The final speech that Lord Exeter addressed the field and followers was recorded: “Having regard to the heavy increases in taxation during the past two years and the sharp rises in costs, I have with a sad heart and very reluctantly decided that I must close down the Burghley Hunt at the end of this season.

“I would like to take this opportunity of saying how deeply grateful my Joint Master and I are firstly to Lord Fitzwilliam, Major Hoare and their Joint Masters for allowing us to hunt in their countries, and also to all our supporters of the hunt, including particularly the farmers over whose land we have hunted during these past ten seasons. “I am happy to say that both Lord Fitzwilliam and Major Hoare have told me that they plan to meet regularly during the hunting season in the areas of their country which the Burghley hounds have hunted during the past ten years.” As you may have already worked out, the hunt would have been active at the same time that Lord Exeter took on the Horse Trials. It was 1961 that British eventing reached Burghley Park and riders could compete around Capability Brown’s beautifully constructed landscape. When the hounds were still active, it was tradition for the Lord Exeter to lead a hunt on the first morning of the Horse Trials every year, perhaps to give the local farmers a tour of what was to come over the following week. Today, the Fitzwilliam Hunt (who I am a proud supporter of) are very lucky to be able to visit Burghley still and follow the hounds through the beautiful parkland as many of their ancestors no doubt have before. No matter what your take is on hunting, to experience such a tradition in an estate so filled with history is a sight to behold, and it’s right on your very doorstep.

BRAISED VENISON WITH HORSERADISH Jane says, “ it is great for a dinner party and we never have any left! “ Serves 4 • 30 ml/2 tblsp plain flour • 4 x 175g/6 oz braising steaks (or equivalent weight in casserole) • 30 ml/2 tblsp sunflower oil • 12 small shallots – peeled and halved • 1 garlic clove - crushed • 1.5 ml/ 1/4 tsp ground ginger • 5 ml/1 tsp curry powder • 10 ml/2 tsp dark muscovado sugar • 475 ml/16 fl oz hot beef stock • 15 ml/1 tblsp Worcestershire sauce • 30 ml/2 tblsp creamed horseradish • 225g/8 oz baby carrots - trimmed • 1 bay leaf • salt and fresh ground black pepper • 30 ml/2 tblsp chopped fresh chives (to garnish) • Place the flour in a large, flat dish and season with salt and black pepper. Toss the steaks in the flour to coat. Heat the oil in a pan and quickly brown the steaks on both sides. Transfer them to a casserole. • Add the halved shallots to the pan and cook gently for 10 minutes, or until golden and beginning to soften. Stir in the garlic, ginger and curry powder and cook for 1 minute more, then remove the pan from the heat.

• Tip the shallot mixture into the casserole, spreading it over the meat and sprinkle with the sugar. • Pour the beef stock over the shallots and meat, then add the Worcestershire sauce, horseradish, baby carrots and bay leaf. Stir to combine, and season with salt and black pepper. Cover with the lid and cook on high in the slow cooker for 1 hour, or alternatively in the oven on 180°C. • Reduce the slow cooker to low, or turn the oven down to 140°C and continue to cook for a further 5-6 hours, or until the venison and vegetables are very tender. Remove the bay leaf from the stew and sprinkle with the chopped chives. Serve with roast vegetables such as potatoes, parsnips and sweet potatoes. O you have a day or two to spare? Are you in need of some luxury pampering and a relaxing retreat? Are you desperate for a change of scene or want to have fun with the family? If it’s yes, then head south from Stamford on the A1, take the A14 towards Cambridge, turning off onto the A11, where a little further (just 65 miles in all from Stamford) is a site mentioned in the Domesday Book: Tuddenham Mill, in the hamlet of Tuddenham St Mary (referred to simply as “Tuddenham”). This ancient watermill has been transformed into a luxury boutique hotel with a restaurant boasting 3 AA rosettes. It didn’t matter that when we visited it was bleak wintry weather, as at Tuddenham Mill we were greeted by the warmest of welcomes. The rooms The main building, housing the waterwheel, is flanked by a series of lodges, “nooks” and beautiful rooms leading out on to the water meadows. Here we enjoyed modern contemporary Italian decor with every comfort, including a Bose radio and Apple TV, and gorgeous views from the patios. Everything speaks of luxury – the fine bed linen, soft feather pillows, fresh (not UHT) milk and squeezed orange, not to mention complimentary sloe gin! In addition, you can enjoy the ESPA products in the spacious bathroom and book the outdoor hot tub for a real treat. The loft rooms are particularly spacious and hence very popular with families, whilst the ground floor rooms are ideal if you can’t bear to leave your family pet at home. Much of the accommodation is easily accessible for guests with disabilities, but there is also a dedicated suite on offer too. The restaurant A break from the kitchen is definitely a holiday for me, so it was a delight to relax in the calm candle-lit restaurant, which was well patronised – a sure sign of a good establishment. This in no way detracted from our enjoyment or from the spot-on service of the waiting staff. The Mill is acclaimed for the high quality of its food, much of which comes from its own allotment, with the menus prompted by what is in season. The three AA rosettes indicate an “outstanding restaurant that achieves a standard that demands recognition well beyond the local area.” Lee Bye, the young and highly praised chef-patron, offers an interesting combination of ingredients with a comprehensive wine list to match. In 2016 he received an Acorn Award, which recognises 30 of the country’s most promising hospitality professionals under the age of 30. Fenland parsnip soup topped with toasted almonds and apple, a standout hake cooked on the bone, with pepperonata, brown shrimps and baby spinach, and, to finish, a mouth-watering baked croissant pudding with whisky soaked raisins and sea salt toffee, served with vanilla ice-cream. Fabulous. My tip for seating in the restaurant would be to choose a window table where you can enjoy looking down on the mill pool and be mesmerised by the gliding swans – it’s especially picturesque after dark. The whole area, incidentally, is a wonderful for bird-watching and stargazing. (If you’re outside, just be careful not to venture too near to the swans, as they can be somewhat possessive of their territory. Another tip is to pack a little torch to help keep a sure footing on your stroll back after the evening meal.) Tuddenham Mill is a beautifully presented, wonderfully atmospheric hotel offering a stylish, upmarket retreat and fine gourmet experience. There’s lots to do in the vicinity for those who like to combine relaxation with sightseeing, culture or something more active, too. Highly recommended.

Need a Will for your French Holiday Home? – Consider making a Choice of Law…

F you own a property in France, are you aware of a recent change in European inheritance law? A significant new EU Regulation, known as “Brussels IV”, came into force in August 2015. Previously, French inheritance law applied to any French property owned by a person who died whilst domiciled in England & Wales and there was very little that could be done to change this. Under French law, ‘forced heirship’ rules mean that, on your death, you cannot always leave your French property to your surviving spouse (or other beneficiaries) because your children have an automatic entitlement to part of it. The aim of Brussels IV is to prevent different inheritance laws applying to assets situated in more than one country. It ensures that, where a person owns assets in the EU, their worldwide estate is governed by a single inheritance law. If this applies to you, Brussels IV says that your worldwide estate will be governed by the law of the country of your last habitual residence at the time of your death, unless your Will provides otherwise. As a result, if you are resident in England with no plans to live abroad, you might assume that your French property will pass under English law. However, the UK has opted out of Brussels IV and so it seems that French law will continue to apply. That said, Brussels IV provides that you can opt, by Will, for the law of your nationality to apply to your worldwide assets instead. This option is available despite the UK not being party to the Regulation. So, if you wish to bypass the French forced heirship rules, or futureproof your Will if you are unsure of where you will be living at the time of your death, you can now include a clause in your Will expressly

selecting the law of your nationality to apply to your worldwide estate. However, a word of caution - seek specialist legal advice as to whether such a ‘Choice of Law’ is appropriate for your circumstances and, if so, whether it is preferable to make just one Will, or two. Bear in mind that, because Brussels IV does not affect inheritance tax, both French and UK inheritance tax consequences must be considered too. The 2018 Stamford Property Market Forecast With Stamford property values 5.8% higher than a year ago, local property advisor David Crooke, owner of UPP Property shares his thoughts on the 2018 Stamford Property Market.

ITH the average 5-year fixed rate mortgage at 1.98% (down from 3.47% in 2014) and 2-year fixed rate at 1.47% (down from 2.37% in 2014), mortgage interest rates offered by lenders are at an all-time low (even with the slight increase on the Bank of England base rate a few months ago). Added to this, last year Stamford had a low unemployment rate of 3.4% which contributed to maintaining a decent level demand for property (interestingly – an impressive 503 Stamford properties were sold in last 12 months). Whilst finally, the number of properties for sale in the town has remained limited, thus

providing support for Stamford house prices, meaning Stamford Property Values are 5.8% higher than a year ago. However, this year there will be greater pressures on incomes as inflation starts to eat into real wage growth, which will wield a snowballing strain on consumer confidence. Interestingly, information from ‘Rightmove’ suggested over a third of property listed in October and November had their asking prices reduced - the highest percentage of asking price reductions in the same time frame over 5 years. Still, a lot of that could have been house-sellers being overly optimistic with their initial pricing. In terms of what will happen to local property values in the next 12 months a lot will be contingent on the type of Brexit we have and the impact on the whole of the

UK economy. There will be much discussion surrounding the central London property market in the coming year, and if the banking and finance sectors are negatively affected with a poor Brexit deal then the London market is likely to see more of an impact. Nevertheless, local homeowners and landlords should be aware of what happens in the rollercoaster housing market of central London, but not panic if prices do drop suddenly there in 2018. Over the last 8 years, the central London property saw house prices grow by 89.6% in those last 8 years, whilst in Stamford, they only rose by 30.2%). So, we might see a heavy correction in the capital, whilst more locally, something a little more subdued. So, what of house prices in Stamford over the next 12 months? I believe they will end up between 0.2% lower and 1.4% higher, although it will probably be a bumpy ride to get to those sorts of figures.

Landlords continue to be targeted by HMRC

HE Let Property Campaign is aimed at individual Landlords who have failed to disclose rental income to HMRC. The campaign has been open since 2013 and was originally intended to last for just 18 months, but there is no indication that it will be closed any time soon. It allows those who owe tax as a result of letting out property in the UK or abroad to tell HMRC about the income that they haven’t declared by making a voluntary disclosure to them. If HMRC are notified without being prompted, lower penalties and a payment plan may be negotiated. Rental income is often not declared to HMRC because people simply don’t think of themselves as landlords. There are numerous examples of situations where rental income may be liable to tax without the taxpayer being aware. This could be where someone inherits a property and then lets it out, rents a holiday home (even if it is also used personally) or relocates for work and rents out their house. In addition, measures have been introduced effective since 6 April 2017 that start to restrict tax relief on finance costs, including mortgage interest, to the basic rate of income tax. This will create a tax liability for many who have previously not owed any tax on their rented property. There is detailed guidance available on the GOV. UK website, including information on the scope of the campaign and how to make a disclosure to HMRC.
