Guilty as charged… What is it about those messages scrawled on the back of old envelopes and stuffed behind your windscreen wiper – the capitalisation, the triple underlining, the plaintive tone – is there any way to write a note that doesn’t irk the reader? You feel the author would have been inclined to write a much ruder note if they weren’t such a respected member of the local community and feared that a guilt-less neighbour might see the message first. I realised when I read this note on my windscreen (see picture) after a very fine walk, that the angry missives that I scratch out on a regular basis when people park on the pavement right in front of my front door must have exactly the same effect – making one feel like a scolded child; and determined to speed off as quickly as possible so as not to be seen by their angry correspondent. Is there any way to write a note of remonstrance that doesn’t somewhat offend the recipient? The only one that ever made me smile was this one attached to a drinks can in a communal fridge: “Do not think about drinking this can of Coke, in fact don’t even think about touching it….” Just to be clear, I didn’t touch the Coke can, but I was guilty as charged of the green verge offence – and promise not to do it again!

ISTERS-IN-LAW Marion Lindley and Kathryn White had the idea of starting up a shop together, when they met up in Stamford for a coffee and it was chilly. Kathryn couldn’t find a reasonably priced cardigan anywhere to buy and the rest is history as they say! From small beginnings in Sly’s current premises they started with a few brands and a few vintage pieces, lovingly displayed. It seemed to be the kind of shop everyone needed at the right time. Helped by the fact that Kathryn had sharp business skills as Merchandise Director for the Arcadia Group and Marion had worked at both Jean Muir and Paul Smith they combined their talents and grew the business organically. When the ideal property became available on St Paul’s Street (Weekend) and later St Mary’s Street there were two shops; but combining the two into St Mary’s Street offered a more workable option. Now Attic can offer a broader range of clothes, accessories, scarves, jewellery and shoes. With a team of nine in total, Kathryn steers the business side of the operation and Marion is responsible for the daily running of the shop. Marion alongside Mel is responsible for the all-important buying decisions, with a varied mix of customers in mind. The Attic team is passionate about customer service and love outfitting customers, who want help and guidance. The stock trickles in throughout the seasons, so there is always something fresh, new and exciting. Brands are carefully considered and do change from time to time. Esprit, the well-known German brand has been at the core of the fashion mix, offering reasonably priced but high fashion pieces consistently. Attic is one of the few independents offering Esprit and it never fails to deliver on quality and affordability. New brands this year are Plus Fine, Indi and Cold, Reiko, Ese O Ese and Harris Wilson. The shop maintains an eclectic mix of Spanish brand Nice Things and the ever-popular American Vintage and Mac for jeans. The range of brands and styles ensures that there is something for everyone and at all price points. Here the staff at Attic show off the new looks for the season and will be coming to the catwalk in the not too distant future!

Stamford PUT A SPRING IN YOUR STEP
HOW IT ALL BEGAN.... Tara and Aaron Day are a dynamic husband and wife team whose positivity and enthusiasm are infectious. Tara’s background is in weight training, nutrition and roller speed skating and Aaron is a professionally trained boxer and former keen runner. After marrying in 2014, they decided to set up business together, maximising on their ability to work well as a team and encourage others to turn over a new leaf and put health high on their agenda. “To test the market, we offered local people a free 4 Week Fit Club, and ended up working with over 30 volunteers on their diet, fitness and lifestyle. The feedback we got from everyone and their end results were so encouraging that we decided to expand. Over the space of 18 months, we have grown month on month, and now have over 300 regular clients, attending over 20 different fitness activities every week.” FAMILY LIFE Tara and Aaron have four children between them, so they appreciate how tricky it can be for parents to prise their off-spring away from electronic gadgets and do something active instead. With childhood obesity on the increase and poor nutrition levels rising, Tara and Aaron are passionate about educating children and adolescents about their health, and helping them to realise that exercise can be fun! Having come from a Roller Skating background, Tara took advantage of the new facilities at Borderville Sports Centre on Ryhall Road and set up Stamford Skatescool in 2015. “We wanted to offer children a chance to learn to roller skate in a safe environment, whilst having fun, getting fit and making new friends. We now have over 50 skaters every Saturday – boys and girls aged between 4 – 12 years old, attending every week and have expanded to 4 coaches so that we can enrol a new intake of Beginners every term. From mid April, after the Easter holidays, we are expanding Skatescool and will be taking on children as young as 3 years old, up to teenagers.” As the popularity of their adult fitness classes increased, so did Tara and Aaron’s attitude to involving the younger generation, after many parents brought their children along during the long summer holidays, and by the end of the session, many of them had joined in and loved it! Aaron is keen to develop a non-contact Junior Boxing class as well
Antonia Scott speaks to Tara and Aaron Day, Stamfordbased fitness instructors, on their vision to get everyone - old and young - fitter and healthier this spring
as running some after school circuit classes for primary school and secondary school children. INSPIRATION, MOTIVATION VISION AND DRIVE “Our inspiration comes from seeing people achieve things they never thought possible. It’s massively rewarding to see someone get a sparkle in their eyes – no matter how old or young - watching a child’s confidence develop from their first skating lesson, to seeing them whizzing around in a matter of weeks. We take huge pride in the fact that our youngest clients are 3 years old, and our oldest client is 83! It’s all about making positive changes to all aspects of their lives which increases their self confidence, wellbeing, social life and their fitness. Our goal is to help absolutely anyone - any size, shape, ability, age - with zero intimidation and lots of fun. We aim to listen to every client and child and adjust what we do for them – whether it’s an injury, a confidence issue or fear of the unknown. We aim to help everyone achieve their own personal goals and reach their full potential.” PASSION, BELIEF AND MANTRAS! “We both make a big effort to gain the trust and build long- lasting relationships with our clients, who in turn support each other towards their goals. It’s very rewarding watching new friendships emerge and we are hugely proud of the way that everyone encourages one another, both inside and outside of our classes. ‘Nothing worth doing is ever easy, but it’s always easier with a little support!’ WHERE NEXT? In the future, Tara and Aaron would love to have their own fitness studio in the Stamford Area, but premises are always difficult to find though, so for now they are very happy to keep their fitness classes where the demand is. They currently run activities at the Wildcats studios in Stamford, The Northwick Arms in Ketton, Tinwell Village Hall and Borderville Sports Centre. • For more information: www.taraandaaronhealthandfitness.co.uk FaceBook: Stamford Skatescool /Tara & Aaron Health & Fitness Download MINDBODY App for a schedule of activities Tel: 07749 473586 or 07539 266120

LEARNING
Stamford Academy Tucked away on Stamford’s High Street, the Academy does more than simply teach languages – it also helps to promote cultural exchange in the community. Alysia Anderson heads into the classroom to learn more
B
LINK and you could easily miss the entrance to the Stamford Academy, an unobtrusive doorway between Tesco and Wilkinson, except at certain times of the year when a gaggle of chattering foreign students outside hints at its whereabouts. Up a flight of stairs are four classrooms equipped with whiteboards and other teaching aids, including a library of audio and printed books. Each room can accommodate up to a dozen students, although class sizes are limited to ten or fewer. “We believe small class sizes are essential to good learning,” says Managing Director Chris Brock, who runs the school with the help of fluent Dutch-speaker Ingrid Richardson, Business Development Manager, and John Walker, Assistant Director of Studies. All have many years of experience in the field of language teaching and examinations. The school is recognised by the British Council as an accredited provider of quality English language courses and is a member of English UK, which works to ensure high standards of teaching and student care. The school is also certified by Cambridge English as one of their exam preparation centres and recently became a centre for the UKiset (United Kingdom Independent Schools Entrance Test).
Speaking in tongues I asked Chris how the language school had begun. “I took over the running of the Academy in 2009. The school was originally established in 2005 to teach English to immigrants as part of a government initiative,” explained Chris. “When funding for this type of course dried up, the Academy started its own programme of English courses, helping many people to pass the highly-regarded Cambridge English exams.” In 2013, the school started offering foreign language classes. Currently, it runs group or individual tuition in French, Dutch, German, Spanish, Italian and Mandarin, often for business people wishing to improve their language skills. “We have around 15 teachers plus others we can call upon if there is demand,” said Chris. Those teaching English are required to have several years’ experience under their belt as well as a CELTA (Certificate in English Language Teaching to Adults) qualification. Most of the foreign language teachers are native speakers, including Jing
14
who teaches me Mandarin each week on a beginners’ course I started in January. There are just four students and the class is very relaxed. In one lesson we learned culinary vocabulary and the following week Jing presented us with a plate of her delicious homemade Chinese dumplings! Foreign language courses start termly in January, April and September and are offered at beginner and intermediate levels. Flexible one-to-one tuition is also available.
Entente cordiale Chris is proud of the way the Academy involves students with the local community. Groups of visiting foreign students, aged 13-17, come to Stamford for around ten to 21 days and stay with local families. “We pay host families £100 a week per student to provide bed and half board, provided they meet the relevant vetting requirements.” The school organises lots of activities for students to explore the locale, such as quizzes, ghost walks and treasure hunts around town. Chris said: “We have a good
relationship with the shop-owners and they are very supportive.” There are also trips further afield, to London, Lincoln or getting active at Rutland Water. “We’ve taken students to the town hall to meet the mayor and got them to do a fantasy menu based on ingredients from the market. They get a truly English experience here, both culturally and historically. As the town is so compact and pedestrianised, it’s easy for them to go out and explore. It’s also safer and cheaper than going to a big city,” said Chris. The Academy also keeps things local by arranging discounted catering from the Stamford Delicatessen just across the High Street. The Deli provides not only sandwiches, drinks and cakes but hot food, too. “Italian kids are used to eating a proper meal at lunchtime, so our chef George prepares hot meals in our professional kitchen just off Wharf Road and we deliver them to the school,” explained Deli owner Kelly Combes. The school also works closely with the FootballCV academy in High Street St Martin’s, providing English courses for their international players and arranging summer football camps for overseas students.
Looking to the future Most of the Academy’s business comes from word of mouth or online: an enquiry from a school in Almería a few years ago kick-started the foreign student group visits. Another growth area is extra coaching for local schoolchildren in Maths, English and languages for IGCSEs or A Levels. Also in the pipeline is a proposal for after-school or Saturday language classes for younger children. Other initiatives include a Summer Shakespeare week with visits to Tolethorpe and Stratford-upon-Avon. • For more information visit www.stamfordacademy.co.uk or call 01780 489400.

Bread Meat Cheese A
n interesting, independent new food outlet has opened in Stamford recently. Bread Meat Cheese is producing “artisan hand-held food” in Red Lion Street – a take on New York deli style sandwiches, hot and cold. Sandwiches such as Divine Swine, the company’s signature Porchetta in a Hambleton Bakery’s baguette served with salsa verde will feature on a regularly evolving menu all of which will be available online. For those searching for something a little lighter, there are toasts such as Aussie Avo – mashed avocado with chilli and lime on a toasted sourdough. Twitter followers of @breadmeatcheese will also be privy to a “secret menu”, sandwiches from under the counter while ‘supporters’ joining through the website will be offered latest news and special offers through the year. The new venture stressed the importance it places on working with local suppliers and producers: “So many talk about provenance, but we will actively publicise where our ingredients are sourced; for example our meat suppliers are Groovy Foods of Bourne and RP Meats in Peterborough , cheese is primarily Lincolnshire Poacher and all bread is from Hambleton. We also offer coffee roasted locally, organic teas and interesting soft drinks.” • For further information visit www.breadmeatcheese.co.uk
Charles & Dean are winners he ICC, Birmingham was a hub of activity recently, as the annual winners of Theo Paphitis’ exclusive #SBS (Small Business Sunday) award gathered to celebrate the recognition. The Twitter campaign was launched by Theo Paphitis in 2010 and has grown from strength to strength with UK businesses eager to be a member of the #SBS family. Stamford based finance brokers, Charles & Dean were amongst those being recognised after having their winning tweet retweeted by the former Dragon to his half a million followers last year. The event played host to speakers from leading retail and service businesses including ‘Not On The High Street’ and ‘Really Useful Boxes’. The award winners were invited to listen to a variety of talks discussing innovation, brand alignment and marketing projection as well as a Q&A session with Theo Paphitis himself. Charles & Dean director, Tom Perkins said, “We are thrilled to join the engaging #SBS community, who have made us feel so welcome. We all support each other via various social media and the weekly #SBSwinnershour so the #SBSevent2016 was a terrific opportunity to meet each other over lunch and strengthen those relationships”. Simon Grace, director of Charles & Dean added ‘There is real value in events such as these, whereby like minded businesses leaders can take time out of their organisations to share successful strategies with each other. At Charles & Dean we help our customers finance everything from vehicles and company assets through to commercial property and we have been impressed by the wealth of knowledge under one roof today”. • Charles & Dean, 2 Broad St, Stamford PE9 1PB Tel: 01780 763836 www.charlesanddean.com

elebrating its 2nd anniversary, you can tell it’s flourishing the moment you step inside. The team of five, led by owner Tracy Burr, are full of creativity and enthusiasm for what they do and all sides of the business are growing, especially weddings, which she particularly enjoys. With a background in photography, Tracy has a particular eye for what will work and what the best angles are in each venue. he Friends of Rutland Sailability, a local charity that provides sailing on Rutland Water for people with disabilities, are trying to raise £7,950 to refurbish one of the club’s sail boats. The Kinsman sailing cruiser can carry up to five people and an especially adapted wheel enables those with mobility difficulties to steer the craft. ‘Kinsman No 41’ has been in the Sailability fleet since 2003, but is now showing her age! A comprehensive programme of refurbishment is being undertaken to bring the craft up to full sailing standards in readiness for the coming sailing season. The programme includes refurbishing the hull and deck, repairing and servicing sailing gear, new sails and secure storage for equipment. This will ensure the craft is ‘seaworthy’ for at least the next five years – and saves the replacement cost of around £30,000 for a new boat. “Routine maintenance is carried out by members of Rutland Sailability, but the work required to refurbish ‘Kinsman No 41’ requires the services of professional craftsmen and use of industrial equipment. The Friends of Rutland Sailability are keen to support this programme, so that disabled members can continue to enjoy sailing on Rutland Water,” said Andrew Hunter, Chairman of The Friends of Rutland Sailability. • Anyone interested to donate to this programme will be welcome – please contact Jim Fleming on 01780 756300 or Email: flemingjandb@msn.com

any people arrange their own care independently. Local authorities can help with this, but it’s always a good idea to do your own homework in either situation. Know what category of care that you will need. When looking for a care facility it is often overlooked. It can be assumed that all care homes offer all categories of care, however they do not. You need to know whether the person who requires care will need Nursing Care, Residential care, Dementia care, Nursing Dementia, or a home that caters for specific conditions or disabilities. The age group of the residents in the home may also be an important factor, as not all care homes are for the elderly. CQC and Local authority reports are a good starting place to start. On the CQC website it is possible to enter your post code and search all categories of appropriate care homes within a nominated mileage range. Inspection reports are available for care homes of all categories and will give you indication of the suitability for the person who may need care. It is a good idea to ask the manager of the home further questions about their report if you have any concerns or need clarification. Things to do & look out for: Visit the home unannounced. The staff at the care home should be happy to offer you a viewing at any time. This way you will see everyday life at any time of the day you visit. Have a list of questions ready you would like to ask. For example ask to see a copy of the menu. Ask what activities are provided. • Do the staff seem friendly and engaging? • Do the residents you see look happy? • Why not ask a resident about their experience living at the home? • Is the environment suitable for the person you are helping find a care home? • Are the facilities suitable for a person having difficulties with cognition or mobility for example? It is always a good idea take the perspective resident to visit the home before a final decision is made. This will allow you to gauge their reaction. • For confidential help and advice, you can contact Julie at Rose Lodge Care Home on 01778 344454. For more information about Rose Lodge itself, you can visit www.countrycourtcare.com.
Helping with the pursuit of career happiness C
areers Counsellor Niki Tolhurst has years of experience in helping clients find job satisfaction Whether you’re starting out on the career ladder or looking for a mid-life change of direction, Niki Tolhurst, Careers Director at Career Junction UK, is passionate about the positive role that discussion plays in making the right choice. Based in Peterborough and operating across the region, the company focuses on the personal delivery of career guidance, counselling, education and coaching. Niki, a University of Durham graduate, has worked in key roles for blue chip organisations and is fully qualified in careers education, information, advice and guidance, holding the well-recognised Qualification in Careers Guidance (QCG) backed by the Careers Development Institute (CDI). She has worked in both private and voluntary sectors and has experience in training, recruitment and selection. She says: “Individuals who might benefit most from our type of personal careers service fall into two camps. Firstly, young people who have not yet found satisfying work that fulfils their potential and need an independent, supportive careers guide to help them move towards their goals. Perhaps graduates who rely on a well-informed service, based upon wide-ranging experience of the many types of contemporary interviewing styles and selection processes. I see young people who have done well at Uni and are now starting out, considering what they want from work and trying to identify a future career path. “Secondly, adults who feel they need a change of work that offers a different perspective – more meaningful and either more or less challenging perhaps, and fitting in with their current circumstances and aims. This could be a person returning to the job market after a break with family – many find they’re unsure of their skills, or how best to balance work and home-life.” www.careerjunctionuk.co.uk

Little Cherubs P
roud owners Elizabeth and James announce the opening of Little Cherubs Day Nursery this May, bringing to the children and parents of Stamford, a new and thrilling concept in nursery care! The newly renovated 15 and 16 Broad Street will provide a vibrant, stimulating environment for children of all ages. Opening hours are 7:30am to 6pm so pick up and drop off will be a simple affair with parking along Broad Street. The Friday market doesn’t stretch as far as the nursery, so parents are still able to park up and drop their children off with ease on that day. Within the nursery, each room is individually themed, and set up to ensure all 7 areas of learning are represented. There is a baby soft play area specifically designed for their needs, as well as a dedicated soft play room for our older children and their growing exuberance! They have designed a ‘Mr Benn Room’ which will reflect the current focus of the nursery and provide amazing role play and dressing up experiences and a room devoted to sensory learning. Little Cherubs offers a ‘family’ environment and employ well trained, caring members of staff who work to the highest standards. Parents are seen as partners so you will have daily updates, 6 monthly progress reports, computerised children’s learning journals and a monthly memory book to treasure. Within the nursery there is a webcam system that allows parents to observe their child at play within the nursery at any time. This gives all parents the peace of mind that your child will be treated no differently than if you were standing in the room! Fees are fully inclusive, (except for milk in the Under 2’s) so no packing bags/ meals and forgetting things! Little Cherubs offers various exclusive fees and incentives, ranging from holiday discount to term time care. Little Cherubs hold exciting sessions such as music and movement, introduction to French and Spanish, as well as Baby Yoga and Massage. Their very own allotment is an amazing opportunity for children to learn about food, what better way than, ‘hands on’! And he Adventure Area has a lovely bright canopied area for babies, mud kitchen, sandpit, playhouse, climbing frame and even a road for biking! • Please feel free to visit, no appointment necessary, or alternatively call for all those burning questions you’ll have on 01780 751222, or www.littlecherubsstamford.co.uk.

he Zo facial is a medical-grade treatment using American brand Zo Obagi skin health products that hydrate, exfoliate, stimulate, nourish and protect. The facial is so popular with celebrities it’s earned the title “red carpet treatment”. This is a new treatment for Peterborough Cosmetic Clinic. Unlike many sophisticated facials it does not use machines, but relies on ingredients such as Alpha Hydroxy Acid that remove dead skin cells and superficial imperfections to reveal the brighter and clearer skin underneath. I tried the 50-minute treatment and whilst I could feel the products were leaving my skin tingling and warm, it also felt very relaxing and soothing as the therapist gently massages them in. I am delighted with the results and although my skin was initially dry for a couple of days after the treatment – I was warned it might! – it soon felt fresh and glowing with improved texture. It is an ideal treatment to soften lines and for the treatment of mild acne and scarring, age spots and uneven pigmentation. It really helps reduce pore size too. Even after one treatment, the results are impressive and there’s a visible difference. • Peterborough Cosmetic Clinic, 226 Dogsthorpe Road, Peterborough PE1 3PB (within the DHC Business Centre). 01733 310090. www.ukcosmeticclinic.co.uk.

Osprey Lettings O
sprey Lettings has recently opened an outlet in Stamford, having been successfully established in Oakham for the last couple of years. Osprey are specialists in letting and property investments and have a refreshingly direct and professional approach to the market. Darren Haughton, who heads the office, told SL: “We start by listening carefully to what a landlord is seeking; for some, it is all about yield, for others long-term capital growth, for others a combination of the two. We can meet all these needs through our excellent knowledge of the Rutland and Stamford property market, but also through our other offices in Kettering and a recent acquisition covering the Hull/Grimsby area.” Osprey are members of the Association of Residential Letting Agents (ARLA) and pride themselves in the level of service they offer throughout the lettings process, where detail and tenant suitability are key. Darren Haughton is supported by Kay Jones, who has a strong knowledge of the local market and Marianne Thompson, property manager. Kay joined the team in Stamford having worked previously for another local estate agent. Living in Stamford she has a wealth of local knowledge, possesses excellent customer skills and has a professional approach to the business. Darren has over 20 years experience within the local property market and having previously owned his own successful property management company which now forms part of Osprey Lettings, Darren brings a wealth of knowledge and expertise to the company and is responsible for the overall day to day running and development of the business. Compulsory Microchipping in Dogs is Being Embraced by Stamford Veterinary Centre F
rom this month, compulsory microchipping is being introduced by the government for all dogs across England and Wales. The new law means that every dog over the age of eight weeks has to have a microchip, their information has to be stored on a suitable database and this information has to be kept up to date. Stamford Veterinary Centre are working hard this spring to help raise awareness of the new legislation in the Stamford and Rutland area. Practice Manager, Jessica Fawcett explains: “Microchipping is not only important to comply with legislation, but is a vital part of security and reassurance for pet owners – if a pet is lost or stolen the microchip provides a valuable way of identifying them and reuniting them with their worried owners”. The microchip process itself takes seconds and Stamford Vets only use minimicrochips which mean a smaller needle for your puppy or dog. The owner’s details are stored on the Kennel Club run database ‘Petlog’® - this keeps the pet owner’s data secure but, should anything happen and that pet becomes lost or stolen, the database is contactable 24 hours a day. . To help people and their pets get up to date, Stamford Veterinary Centre are running a special promotion throughout March & April. Microchipping is available for just £10.00 (normally £20.00). To arrange an appointment, please call the practice on (01780) 763180 and they will be happy to assist you. • Stamford Veterinary Centre 32 Main Street, Great Casterton, Stamford, PE9 4AA Tel: 01780 763180 www.stamfordvets.co.uk

THE POWER OF MARINE MINERALS AT EQUILIBRIUM Natural algae are the key ingredient in the paraben-free Thalgo range, and it’s an ingredient that’s been used for centuries to revitalize the skin. The Thalgo 3 Algae facial (£50) is a comprehensive pick me up for the face, which includes application of a pure natural seaweed mask. There’s also a rebalancing back treatment (£40), which is a great way to improve skin texture and regulate sebum production ahead of the summer. A sachet of Thalgo micronised marine algae (£33.95 for a box of 10 sachets) will turn your bathroom in to a home spa. Rich in minerals and vitamins, they relieve muscular fatigue and poor circulation. You can also mix this wonder powder with water to make a paste and apply as a body or a facemask. And for every day, allover cleansing, the Thalgo Marine Shower Gel (£14.25) contains red algae to condition even the most sensitive skin. Stamford Living Reader offer – book a Thalgo 3 Algae Facial during April 2016, and receive a complimentary Marine Shower Gel (please mention Stamford Living at the time of booking, offer is subject to availability). • Equilibrium, 7 St Paul’s Street, Stamford PE9 2BE www.equilibriumstamford.co.uk Tel: 01780 757579
Hypnotherapy
Relaxation shouldn’t be a luxury, as Genevieve Potter discovers with the help of local hypnotherapist David Balfe
I
t’s a sad fact that relaxation seems like a luxury for many of us. It’s something that we aim to do when we have more time, or for when we book a rare week in the sun, but, according to David Balfe, it is the very thing that we should be planning as an intrinsic part of our everyday lives. David, who practices at The Broad Street Practice in Stamford, comments: “People who consult me for various emotional and psychological problems will often add that they just need to relax. “Most of us recognise the benefits of relaxation, but we are unsure how we can achieve it effectively.” David believes that learning relaxation techniques and using them frequently can be effective in taking charge of many common stresses and worries we experience in everyday life. “The more stressed we are, the less able we are to cope and think positively. This can, in some cases, lead to people getting stuck in a cycle of negative thinking, which can prevent them from being able to achieve the things they want to.” A recent study published in The Lancet Psychiatry, showed that positive thinking combined with exercise was beneficial in helping people with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. It showed that people who were given cognitive behaviour therapy (CBT) alongside an exercise programme showed a reduction in their symptoms. CBT is designed to help people think and behave more positively and has often been associated with helping people improve distressing emotional problems. David believes that hypnosis is an ideal way of benefiting from
relaxation and encouraging a more positive attitude. “Hypnosis is best described as focused relaxation. The deep relaxation allows a person to be able to suggest a more positive way of thinking, which can have a positive effect on their behaviour.” Suggestion therapy using hypnosis is often used to help people stop smoking, or manage the anxiety associated with unwanted behaviours, but it is particularly useful in helping a person to relax. It does not have to be a long process either. “I would usually work with a client for a couple of sessions and show them how to use hypnosis themselves, and, with a little practice, they are able to use the techniques to gain some much-needed relaxation in a few minutes a day. “Many people are surprised how easily they relax, even when they thought they couldn’t. In fact I was once told it was the closest to being asleep, without being asleep.” So perhaps one resolution to make this spring is to build time to relax into our schedule. Rather than being a luxury, it is essential in helping us feel positive and able to cope with whatever stresses life throws at us. Having experienced hypnosis with David, I can absolutely recommend it as an effective, natural way to calm the mind. • David Balfe: The Broad Street Practice, Stamford. 20-21 Broad Street, Stamford, PE9 1PG. www.thebroadstreetpractice.co.uk Tel: 01780 480889 Or Tel: 01536 350328 www.ketteringhypnotherapy.com

Natural Looking Make-up: A step by step guide

Where to find the best buy-to-let deals in Stamford? L
ocal buy-to-let property expert, David Crooke, Managing Director of UPP Property Agents offers free advice to Stamford property investors and Stamford home owners. David understands that buying an investment property is a big decision to make, and to assist you in reaching these decisions he has started writing monthly newsletters and a weekly blog; www. rutlandandstamfordpropertyblog.co.uk Since the blog was started at the end of last year, there is already an impressive library of topical articles to read as new articles are added weekly. The articles are informative, yet easy to read, and his opinion is supported with facts and figures on the Stamford property market. Proving to be really popular with regular visitors to the blog are David’s weekly list of the ‘3 best buy-to-let deals’ in and around Stamford – irrespective of which estate agents they are listed with. A kind of ‘Homes Under The Hammer’ Stamford and Rutland style! Over a decade ago, just prior to David starting his own residential lettings and estate agency, he bought his first investment property and became a landlord for the first time. Before taking the plunge into buying his first investment property David said he really struggled to find decent, reliable, local property information; He wanted to know where to buy in Stamford, and where to avoid? What to buy in Stamford? How many bedrooms? New build or old? He needed answers on rental yields and capital growth. He didn’t know where to begin his research. If you live in Stamford, the ‘Rutland and Stamford Property Blog’ has something of interest for you, such as whether you’re looking to maximise on your own home to save you from ‘pension oblivion’, or trusted advice for first time investors, or perhaps discussion on how the new taxation legislation will affect buy-to-let landlords. House buying trends and residential demands across the spectrum of the Stamford property market affects the value and ‘sale-ability’ of your own home, so this blog is a

ASET currently offers a range of engaging and informative presentations to local schools on issues such as sex and relationships, consent, protective behaviours and the impact of pornography. They want to expand this service to more schools and colleges and want really enthusiastic, driven people to help make this a reality, and to further the work they do. • If you think you fit the profile, or you simply want more information please follow this link https://alternatives560.wordpress.com/about/ or contact Laura on 01780 765853 or email office@ alternativesstamford.co.uk for an application form. W
HAT does ‘vintage’ mean? Although originally used to date a bottle of wine, the term now implies that the item being bought is over 50 but less than 100 years old. However it is regularly used more loosely when talking about an item that mimics a fashion popular in a different era. If we are to stay true to its meaning then the quintessential vintage styled event will boast the delicateness of the 1920-40s, between 50 and 100 years ago, where tea parties were the rage and floral, delicate and pretty ruled. Consider soft lighting and delicate glassware. White lace or embroidered table cloths. Fabric napkins with silverware, certainly not plastic ware! Alongside pretty floral crockery, teapots and sugar bowls.

Founded in 1993 by Peter Light, St Martins Antiques is now managed by his daughter Lucinda Silcock and her team of experienced staff. Moving back to the area in 2005 with her husband, two children and Casper the dog, Lucinda decided to join the family business. She was looking for a more flexible work / life balance than her previous job allowed and has not looked back since. “Like my Father, I grew up in a home full of antiques & certainly since having the opportunity to furnish my own home my first port of call has always been St Martin’s Antiques Centre.” Situated just off the A1 in Stamford, the centre leases space to over 70 dealers, who source world wide and has reached wider fame in the past through the filming of a number of antiques shows including The Antiques Road Trip. Here you can indulge in items from the Georgian era to the arts and crafts movement and hours can easily be spent browsing the amazing collections. Allington Petal Sue Jackson’s grandfather came to live in the village of Allington after the war, where he built up his own plant nursery. So 12 years ago, after travelling and working in various locations Sue, accompanied by her dog Sunny, moved back to her home village and set up Allington Petal which specialises in flower arrangements and vintage ware. She regularly occupies a stand at Newark market on Wednesdays and Saturdays and at Stamford market on Fridays. Alongside this her wares are found in a few local businesses and she travels the country in the summer months standing at various shows (listing is available on her website). “I use vintage pots and containers where I can as I love up cycling and the character of something pre-loved…I grow a few of the plants and source others from local nurseries and flower markets and plant them up myself using vintage containers. My parents and uncle are retired and live close by and they all love to help at busy times, which is lovely and makes it a real family affair.”

Whilst juggling the joys of motherhood, local ladies Stacey Johnson and Nicola Homan decided to set up business doing what they loved most, sourcing antique lighting and vintage accessories. Lights are sourced from various antique fairs in France, Italy and Belgium, then transported to and restored in the UK. Says Stacey “By working closely with our qualified electrician, we can source, restore, and in some cases adapt a light fitting to suit your room. With a wide range of lights and candle sconces there is something for every budget.” Most of the light fittings date between 70 to over 100 years old. The majority can be viewed at Europe’s largest antiques fair in Newark (approx 45 miles from Stamford) and more locally, a small selection are available to view in Oakham. Please see the website for more details. A dining table is never complete without its central light fitting and candle light so what better way to finish off a vintage scheme than with an antique pendant and a candle wall sconce from Antoinette Pearl.
Candle sconces are £50 each or 2 for £90; age over 100 years old.

Tiffins Vintage Having moved here 30 years ago from Brazil and brought up her 3 children in Stamford, Adelaide Bradbury now manages a network of working mothers who each hold skills in baking, catering and waiting to provide vintage inspired functions, big and small in the Stamford area. It was her love of collecting all things vintage, and her previous catering experience working at The George Hotel, that kick started her career in vintage styled events and she now boasts a collection that provides cover for up to 200 people. “People really like how I organise things, really carefree and uncomplicated…I have a very eclectic collection, whatever I find beautiful. However beauty is in the eye of the beholder and all pieces must therefore be of good quality and good condition, the best of what I can get.” A mobile business, Tiffins Vintage operates mostly in the Stamford area and supports local industry, local farms and local people. Magpie Vintage Crockery Hire Born out of a passion for vintage home wares and antiques treasures and with her background in marketing and events, Helen Esposito has built up a collection of vintage china and accessories that she now rents out along with her personal touch and invaluable advice. “I used to buy and sell vintage clothes and home wares (and also keep a lot too!). I then came up with the idea of starting Magpie, giving me the perfect excuse to build up a collection of beautiful vintage china which I could share with anyone who wants a vintage look at their wedding, party or event”. Magpie, now in its 4th year has supplied teacups, cake stands, teapots, vintage embroidered tablecloths, vases, bunting, tin baths, vintage props and accessories (the list goes on!) to events from weddings, christenings and afternoon teas to hen parties, birthday parties and awards ceremonies. As well as the hire, Helen can also set up and style events and is happy to give advice on how to bring people’s ideas to life. “Whether it’s a formal afternoon tea or a relaxed, rustic country style wedding, I can help with achieving the right look”.

OUT & ABOUT
A summer full of festivals If you can convince yourself to venture out of Stamford this summer, and not just to the reassuring beaches of Hunstanton, then why not visit one of these amazing festivals…some are closer than you think! Standon Calling 29th July - 31st July 2016
Y
ou know that advert on the telly where some folks have a festival in their garden and suddenly it turns into a mini Glastonbury? Well that’s basically Standon Calling, it started with just 25 friends, a swimming pool, a set of decks and a birthday BBQ. They pride themselves on sticking to the original laid back atmosphere but the garden party has just expanded slightly! This festival is family friendly and one of the best medium sized festivals in the East of England. Set in the beautiful British countryside of Hertfordshire you can relax at this festival listening to favourites including Jess Glynn, Kelis, The Hives, Everything Everything, Suede and plenty more to be announced soon. There is plenty of other entertainment there for adults and children so it’s a great one for the whole family! Boutique camping is available if putting up a tent and whacking out a pocket rocket isn’t your thing, you can book tickets and camping on their website: www.standon-calling.com

S
et in the unique woodland beauty of Henham Park in Southwold (around 2 hours from our area) this festival is also family friendly but is a lot larger than Standon Calling with the lineup being announced soon. For the kids, activities include everything from pond dipping and astronomy to pizza making so they are sure to be kept busy. Tickets and information regarding camping is on the website: www.latitudefestival.com
The Secret Garden Party 21st - 24th July 2016
P
ossibly one of the closest but most overlooked festivals in this area, The Secret Garden Party or SGP as it is known down with the kids actually takes place in Abbots Ripton near Huntingdon, only around an hour from here! The location is part of the grounds of a Georgian farm house which has its own lake and landscaped gardens. The SGB support the charity CALM (the campaign against living miserably) which helps men who are considering suicide and tries to prevent it. The music is varied so there is usually something there for everyone. The headliner this year is the French duo, ‘Air’, with Milky Chance and The Temper Trap as just some of the amazing music filling the stages this year. The best thing about SGP in my opinion is the huge array of sleeping options, from royal safari tents to tipis; it’s luxury, not camping. Things not to miss out on: • Mermaid School, fulfil your wildest dreams and learn how to be a mermaid for the day. • The theme this year is ‘Gardener’s Guide to the Galaxy’, so think outside the box, lose yourself and get ‘proper’ dressed up Their website is a nightmare, it’s fun but give yourself plenty of time, so if this sounds like your kind of festival: www.secretgardenparty.com
Cambridge Folk Festival 28th July - 31st July 2016
O
ne of the most famous and longest running folk festivals in the world, attracting around 10,000 people most of whom return each year - this festival sets its standards high and wants the best for its performers as well as the audience. This means pristine toilets (you will have to go to believe this is possible at a festival) food from around the world, craft, on site art and an area for youth to stay entertained in. If Organicism is your thing (not orgasms silly) this festival was named ‘outstanding’ in the A Greener Festival awards. The first names have been announced on their website, the phenomenal Christy Moore will be doing his thing on the Saturday along with Kate Rusby, Songs of Separation and many more. hy not support your local festival in Peterborough this summer… Bands and entertainment have not been announced just yet but if you keep a close eye on their website, I’m sure it won’t be long until they release the information you’ve all been waiting for. This event is FREE which means everyone can go, they accept donations to their event on the website www. willowfestival.org.uk if you would like to contribute to the event, if not just turn up and have a great time and support them with some good crowd action!

A
festival at the mysterious Elton Hall, what more could you want? It’s so close if there’s no traffic, all the lights are green and no trains obstruct your path so you have absolutely no excuse not to go! They promise a huge line up this year, keep an eye on their website for more information. The best thing, you people who say ‘I don’t do festivals, I hate camping’ fear not! It will be twice as easy to get a taxi back home. Some fun facts from last year: • There were 4000 minutes of music listened to • 400 litres of ice-cream eaten • 40,000 bounces on the inflatable castle! If this sounds like your thing visit their website for more information: www.greenmeadowsfestival.org
Red Rooster Festival Euston Hall, Suffolk 2nd - 4th June 2016
R
ed Rooster, the Suffolk Rhythm ‘n’ Blues festival, returns for its third year this summer. The first wave of musicians have been announced and this year Red Rooster plays host to the incredible King Khan & The Shrines and their first ever headlining slot at a UK festival. The Berlin-based psyche soul revue area cult musical phenomenon with more than 10 years of international touring, and multiple studio records. Bob Log lll is a punk blues one man band from Tuscon, Arizona. Bob plays insane Mississippi Delta blues slide-guitar with hip hop beats performed in a full face crash helmet and cannon ball suit! Red Rooster also welcomes son of a preacher James Leg and his first ever UK festival performance. James Leg plays blistering Gospel Punk Blues. Finally, another act making their UK festival debut at Red Rooster are Daddy Long Legs, a blues wailing trio from Brooklyn, fresh off a US tour with The Jon Spencer Blues Explosion. Euston Hall is a bit further to go at around an hour and a half away, and as always boutique camping options are available, for more information: www.redrooster.org.uk
I
don’t know what it is about the word ‘Shambala’ but once I say it I start singing ‘Shambalalalalalaa’. I feel this emulates the festival – loads of fun and a bit quirky. This year, for the first time, Shambala have decided to go ‘Meat and Fish Free for 2016’ because they have always endeavoured to reduce environmental impact at their festival and they feel that being bold is a good way to show this. There will be some absolutely delicious alternative food for sale; they’ve even said to look out for insect dishes (entomologists steer clear!) Described as taking place in ‘a secret location in the heart of Northamptonshire’ this festival is not to be missed. Shambala is not only a music festival but also includes live comedy acts, circus acts that will make your eyes pop, interactive theatre and beautifully decorated venues. There’s a huge variety of acts so you’ll find something to feast your ears on, keep an eye on their website. There is even an herbal first aid tent in case you come to any harm! Things not to miss out on: ‘Fruity Friday’ – this started off as a one off but has now become a tradition at Shambala. Cross dressing is essential, as amateur drag kings and queens strut their stuff on the cat walk. ‘Power Ballad Yoga’ - wake up, grab a smoothie, pop your leg warmers on and limber up to the rousing riffs of Bon Jovi. If these sounds like your thing visit their website for more information: www. shambalafestival.org

Thousands Move to the Country... with Moores A
T the end of this month, the Country Life ‘Move To The Country’ show takes place in Chelsea and Moores will be showcasing properties in their portfolio to thousands of London buyers keen to find out more about living ‘the good life’. Thanks to their strategic position and identification as the best places in the UK to live, Stamford and Rutland are now firmly established as prime relocation areas for families in the South. “Clients are keen to sell their homes in London and make the move to this region where they find superb transport links to make commuting easy as well as the excellent schools and a wealth of country homes from which to enjoy the unrivalled lifestyle this area offers,” says Vernon Moore, Managing Director of Moores Estate Agency and Country and Equestrian of Oakham. As well as the finest properties available, Vernon will tempt visitors to the Moores stand with a taste of the region including samples of the best locally produced food and drink plus lots of invaluable information on schooling, lifestyle and leisure. “We are really proud to represent Rutland and Stamford at such a prestigious event and attendance has proved invaluable to our vendors, many of whom have seen swift sales as a result of introductions made at the show”. Vernon explains that serious interest comes in two main forms; those who are wishing to move out of London completely and those who wish to combine a rural lifestyle with a reasonable commute. “With the capital accessible in under an hour from both Grantham and Peterborough, we have plenty of homes ideally placed with vendors ready to move.” It’s not too late to include new listings to those on show with Country & Equestrian in London this month where there is an especially good reason to be seen there. “This year will be vitally important for visitors as there is a national shortage of rural homes with 35% fewer available than this time last year which means there has never been a better time to bring your home to market. • Thinking of selling? Contact Moores on 01572 757979 or for Country & Equestrian contact Vernon Moore on 01572 490319 or visit www.countryequestrianhomes.com for specialist advice from the experts.

id you know that over seventy five per cent of buyers purchasing country homes in Stamford and Rutland come from out of the area? For this reason, Vernon Moore created a specialist company to market prestigious homes to potential buyers in London and the South East. Vernon is Managing Director of the premier estate agency that bears his name and is an expert in conducting bespoke home searches for clients from all over the UK – and in particular those who are wishing to take advantage of the superb lifestyle opportunities the region has to offer.
THE LONDON LINK… Through an established partnership with Douglas & Gordon, one of London’s largest property agents, Country & Equestrian have a direct link with thousands of buyers searching for rural homes. “We are able to offer expert guidance to London buyers seeking the best value for money when they move,” Vernon explains. “Very often clients have sold a much smaller property in the south and need some regional expertise when it comes to finding their perfect new home in an unfamiliar area. This is where we can offer all the local knowledge they need as well as advice on schools and amenities to suit their needs.” WHAT DO CLIENTS SAY? Recently re-branded as a result of its phenomenal success, Country & Equestrian has been recognised nationwide for its huge portfolio of properties ranging in price from £600,000 to £6 million – many of which are never seen on line or in any press advertising and include cottages, country homes and estates, equestrian properties and farms. “At Country & Equestrian, the ethos is to tailor the brokerage of the property around the needs of the individual and while some vendors like to take advantage of a full national marketing presence, others prefer a different approach. We also offer a highly personal, low key marketing option which is

The Vendor said – “At no time did we feel we were one of hundreds of people on the books trying to sell a house. C&E have a personal network with London based agencies and indeed our buyer came from London. Vernon Moore not only found us a buyer but kept everyone on schedule so we could plan our move. They then helped us relocate our offices and found us a new home – a true end to end service.” The Buyer said - “When we spoke to C&E we had viewed about a dozen houses and knew what we wanted and what we didn’t. Vernon really listened and instead of adding us to an email list, about six weeks later we got a call about a property which sounded ideal. A second viewing confirmed our initial impression and within the month we had agreed the purchase. The service we received from C&E was genuinely different and the property we purchased was never on the open market.” Vernon commented, “It’s very gratifying when the hard work of the team creates a happy outcome – one of the most memorable was the sale of the outstanding Rutland property Prebendal House to a buyer who had sold a town house in Belgravia. A prime example of what we do best – demonstrating to clients what their capital can achieve in this region.” If you are currently searching for your next home or require advice on marketing your property through Country & Equestrian, contact Vernon Moore Tel: 01572 757979 www.countryequestrianhomes.com • Next month…. Look out for great advice from the Moores team in a special feature on downsizing.

PROFILE In our new monthly craft column, Clare Kelly meets local makers to talk about their work and inspiration. This month, she meets potter Katherine Winfrey in her Barnack studio
MEET THE MAKER
B
IRDS perched daintily on top of teapots, foxes chasing rabbits around and around and chickens too, are on the run – Katherine’s world is full of animals. Each is brought to life by her hands, their character forming under her fingertips. They might only be made of clay but each creation has its own personality, something that cannot be doubted if you look closely. At the time I meet Katherine, she’s thinking a lot about birds and we talk at length about our favourites. She tells me that the creative process often begins while she’s walking the dogs either along the river in Stamford or out across the fields in Bainton; a sketch might appear on the back of an envelope and while her two terriers nap in the studio by the fire, she begins work. Rows of pots are ready to be fired and before I arrive, she’s been hard at work and created some jugs too. On the side, there are rows of tiles adorned with cheery dogs for a lady who commissioned them for her kitchen. The back of each tile is embossed with a different pattern created by laying the wet clay over wallpaper – it won’t be seen once it is placed on the wall. It’s like a secret. But there’s a function too, it gives the adhesive something to grip on to. “I like to make functional earthenware but want people to enjoy using it and for it to have its own narrative. I think that when you look at
46
it, you can make up your own story. My birds are cheeky chappies with plenty of personality,” she says. During the early 90s, Katherine spent time in La Borne, France, working under the potter Eric Astoul — a relationship that came about through the twinning of Peterborough with Bourges. It was here she became inspired by the French traditions and countryside and its Gallic charm clearly made an impression on her as she regularly attends French country dancing events in Ketton at the Northwick Arms. “If you like dancing, you must go,” she urges me. That evening, she is off to a Swedish dance evening that takes place once a year. As a newcomer to the area, her suggestions inspire me to dust off my dancing shoes.
Take 5 Exhibition in April
Of course, one of her favourite places locally is Stamford Arts Centre whom she credits as a great support not only to her but the artistic community as a whole. In April, Katherine will be joined by Pat Armstrong, Karen Atherley, Alison Coaten, Tydd Pottery in the Centre’s gallery to showcase a range of works from crockery to sculptures as part of the Take 5 exhibition. If you’re new to pottery or already a fan, why not pop along? And if you want to see more, there’s a Pottery Market in May also at
the Arts Centre. It’s the sixth year, Katherine has organised the market and this one is set to be bigger than the last with more than 20 exhibitors and live music from Alan Wood plus each maker will be donating a handmade planter to the tombola. Every person who buys a ticket is guaranteed to win and the proceeds raised will go to Sue Ryder Care in Peterborough. “It’s a way to give something back to the community and because the Arts Centre is so generous, we can raise even more.” Before I leave, Katherine asks me to follow her into the garden. We stop in front of a wall and for a while, I’m unsure what we are here for. And then I see it. Shards of pottery have been added to the top of the dry stone wall to make a mosaic-like effect; it’s a surprise, another example of Katherine’s whimsical, wonderful nature. • Find out more at: www.katherinewinfrey.co.uk Take 5 9-24 April, 10am-5pm Stamford Arts Centre Stamford Pottery Market 1-2 May, 11am-5pm Stamford Arts Centre www.stamfordartscentre.com

HEALTHCARE
Spire Hospital Spire Leicester Hospital opens two new outreach clinics in Market Harborough and Stamford. Sosennah Every investigates… We have all been concerned about the waiting times to see specialists on the NHS but for those who are willing to pay, there are some immediate options available in our area with Spire Healthcare, a leading provider of private healthcare that has 39 private hospitals located throughout the UK.
I
WAS invited to see the purpose built hospital in the leafy surroundings of Gartree Road in Oadby and was immediately struck by the efficiency, professionalism and friendliness of all the staff I met. For those who have private medical insurance, want to try the private route and pay for their own treatment, or select Spire Leicester Hospital through the NHS Patient Choice scheme, Spire Leicester Hospital offers diagnostics and treatments across 34 core specialities. Setting Spire Leicester apart is its Rapid Access and One-Stop clinics such as the One Stop Cardiac Clinic and a One Stop Breast Clinic – a Bupa-accredited breast cancer service for rapid diagnosis, onward referral and treatment of breast disease. For those living in Market Harborough and Stamford, initial consultations with a number of specialist consultants, private GPs and physiotherapists are now even easier at the two new outreach clinics at Archway House in Market Harborough and at Broad Street in Stamford town centre. This service gives people living here the opportunity to have initial consultations and follow up treatment, such as physiotherapy at a location much closer to home, with evening and weekend appointments available too, made directly through the hospital. Look out for their free mini-consultation evenings offering the opportunity to have a free, no obligation chat with a surgeon giving expert advice in their area of specialty (these mini-consultations are an opportunity to ask questions and not a formal out-patient consultation so before
proceeding to surgery, a full out-patient consultation is required). If patients are referred to the hospital for surgery, the Spire Leicester facility includes four operating theatres (three with laminar flow to further minimise the risk of infection) with on-site sterile services for the sterilisation of surgical equipment. To facilitate speedy results there are on-site pathology services and diagnostic imaging facilities include a static 64-Multislice CT Scanner, MRI,
ultrasound, X-ray, mammography and DEXA scanning, which measures bone mineral density to diagnose osteoporosis. The hospital also employs its own team of specialist housekeepers to guarantee the hospital’s cleanliness. I visited the dedicated Chemotherapy and Daycare suite which was extremely modern and fresh. Each room was fitted with large comfy chairs so patients don’t have to lie in bed
whilst receiving their chemotherapy and there is plenty of space for friends and relatives to come along. Alternatively, patients can enjoy the television or read in the peace and quiet. Food is also made freshly to order by the hospital’s own chefs. Spire Leicester has 54 single private rooms, many of which have been recently refurbished. The rooms are spacious and airy and felt more reminiscent of a four star hotel room rather than a hospital room. With large en-suite shower rooms, Pecksniffs’ Mood Therapy shower gels and shampoos, soft towels and bathrobes neatly folded on shelves, I was quite ready to feign an illness and stay! With quotes from clients saying, “Exceeded my expectations at every stage; I have had private treatment elsewhere but this was by far the very best. The staff were all wonderful. Excellent care, impossible to do any better”, it is easy to understand why so many patients choose Spire Leicester. The hospital has available some of the most experienced consultant surgeons and other specialists available in the East Midlands and all the staff work extremely hard to ensure patients get personalised and tailored care. • Spire Leicester Hospital, Gartree Road, Oadby, LE2 2FF, Tel: 0116 2720 888, www.spireleicester.com, info@spireleicester.com

From Barrow Common you have a fabulous view of the coast - expansive inter-tidal sand and mudflats, salt marshes, shingle banks, sand dunes, brackish lagoons and reed beds. In Word war II there used to be a coastal defence radar station on the common. Today a few structures still survive, including the bases of the radar masts. Branodunum Roman Fort. This was built between 225 and 250 AD to replace an earlier fort. It was designed to guard against the Saxons and was in use until the 4th Century AD. It is likely that a Roman civilian settlement grew up around this fort. Pause at the information panels in the fields to read more about the fort.

KS Homes has been in the business of enhancing your home for many years, but the bar keeps getting raised and Nick Clipston, the owner, feels that QKS are perfectly positioned to help give your home not just additional space but also that highly desirable ‘wow’ factor. “Gone are the days when people order a rectangular box to add on to the end of their home for maybe a kitchen or living space; they are now much more ambitious in their desired result – and our company can bring all the different elements together to create something truly exceptional – glass roofs, aluminium, Orangeries, hi spec glazing, combinations, you name it, we can help design it and install it.” “People want a lot more glass, open plan living; and we are at the forefront of offering that”. QKS has three building teams on the go at any time, with a full range of building and installation skills that enables them to tackle pretty much any project, however ambitious. Come and visit the showroom, start dreaming and let them turn that into reality. Also, take a look at their new website.
Bringing your garden into your home As part of its drive to offer the widest and most innovative range of solutions on the market, QKS has recently been appointed as registered installers of Weinor extensions, one of only seven installers across the UK. Weinor extensions are a very costefficient and stylish way to help bring your garden into your home. It consists of a Terrazza patio roof which can be closed with all-glass elements to form an uninsulated conservatory. The many flexible and fixed-glazed side elements allow for any number of possible combinations. This is just one way of blurring the lines between the inside and the outside; and extending the season. UPDATES
From The Ark As the first intake of Stamford’s Ofsted Outstanding Day Nursery leave secondary school and take their next big step, we ask ‘What next?’ Words and research by Tilda O’Bryan-Tear
W
HEN Early Years Teachers Jo O’Bryan-Tear and Jane Ingle were looking for a nursery in Stamford for their two sons Teddy and William, they decided to open a nursery themselves. The nursery occupied the lower ground floor of Jo’s home, a beautiful Grade 2 listed Georgian house with an idyllic walled garden. St George’s Square Nursery (which evolved into Stamford’s Ofsted ‘Outstanding’ Day Nursery, The Ark) opened its doors in 2001. But what became of the children who came through the doors on that first morning? Did they make lasting friendships and did their early experiences shape their later lives? For Sylvie Copley, Emily Wood, Elliot Smith and Jo’s son Teddy, maybe. The nursery’s strong emphasis on music, role play and dance has obviously stayed with them. Sylvie and Teddy are now auditioning for drama schools and Emily is hoping to study set design. Elliot, a keen actor, has been in many Tolethorpe performances. Many former pupils of the nursery also excelled in the more academic side of things. Maddie Price and Imy Serjeant are both planning to study veterinary medicine at
university, and Jack Butcher plans to work in IT. For some, it’s harder to see how early characters might develop. Seth Walton, once quiet and thoughtful, now fronts Stamford indie band The Talk, and plans to enter the not-so-quiet world of journalism. For Nathaniel Taylor, Arthur Franklin and Oscar McAughtrie, the energy that saw them tearing up and down the garden on nursery sports day clearly hasn’t left them. All three play sport for school, county and in Oscar’s case, country at U18 level, and name scuba-diving and skiing amongst their hobbies. The former pupils went on to a variety of different secondary schools, including Stamford Endowed Schools, The Deepings School, Rugby, The King’s School, Casterton, Oundle and Oakham. Jane’s son William on the other hand, was home-schooled until GCSEs and now studies sports coaching in Winchester. His earliest memory? Wearing the fireman’s hat. Maybe it’s not so easy to tell how they might turn out.

GARDENING
How Does Your Ga Antonia Scott discovers that a beautifully designed garden is ‘the room outside’- a place where you and your family can relax and enjoy the changing seasons that reflects your own personality.
GARDENING IS GOOD FOR YOU!
Results from an educational project run across four secondary schools in England over the last 2 years called the Demos study, has indicated that pupils working together on a school garden project has helped re-engage them with their learning. The staff and pupils stated that their relationships had dramatically improved because the traditional teacher-student model had been redefined when working together in a more relaxed, informal outdoor environment. Children commented that it has helped their social skills by interacting and working together with staff and other pupils from different year groups, and that they now had more confidence to speak out with their ideas both inside and outside the classroom. In essence, the report has found that getting teenage children outdoors, away from electronic gadgets and into the fresh air to plan, create and plant up a garden design and then have the patience to watch the fruits of their labour blossom into edibles and a wildlife haven, is magical to watch and can transform children’s engagement to learning. Around Stamford there are a plethora of professional horticulturalists on hand to make use of – whether you require a total garden revamp, or just some planting advice.

GET OUTSIDE....JOBS FOR ALL THE FAMILY! • Plant out any Autumn sown Sweet Pea seedlings or sow now direct in their final flowering position. • Hanging baskets can be planted up and kept in the greenhouse while the plants grow on. • Remove any faded flowers from earlyflowering bulbs, especially daffodils. • If you want them to naturalise then leave flowers on snowdrops, crocus, muscari, scillas and other small bulbs. • Begonia tubers can still be planted in pots and kept in the greenhouse – remember that the concave part of the tuber needs to be uppermost. • In mild areas dahlia tubers can be planted outside towards the end of the month. • Mulch around trees with well-rotted manure. • Keep an eye out for any pests and take corrective action. • Apple trees, pear trees, plum trees and cherry trees will start flowering in April. • Check tree ties to prevent rocking. • In drying wind water all newly planted trees. • Summer and autumn fruiting raspberries should be cut back to approximately 23cm from the base. • To encourage early flowers cover strawberry plants with cloches. • Now is the time to sow direct carrots, peas, beetroot, winter cabbages, broccoli and salad crops. Marrows, courgettes, pumpkins, squashes and tomatoes can all be sown in a heated greenhouse or propagator. • If frost threatens then pull some fleece over your potato foliage. • Plant onion sets when the soil is dry. • If any rhubarb flowers appear then cut them out near the base as otherwise they will steal food and energy from the plant. • Rake out any dead moss from your lawn with a scarifier and then fork over to improve drainage. • Apply lawn fertiliser. • Mow growing grass but keep the blades fairly high still. • April is a great time for sowing new lawns and repairing bare patches.

HERDWICK SHEEP
Spotting some unusual sheep at Burghley inspired Sue Lee and Jean Orpin to find out more about the Herdwick breed of sheep which have travelled far from their home in Cumbria to live here in Stamford. Along the way they picked up some further sheepish information Herdwick Sheep at Home Herdwick sheep are native to the Lake District. The Herdwick farms are no more than a hundred acres, augmented by use of the common land on the Lake District Fells. The sheep have been bred for hundreds of years to know where they belong, which means that they will stay in their own area without being fenced in. The lambs learn this from their mothers. They are very hardy sheep and also have a resistance to ticks and parasites. The lambs are black with white ears when they are born in March and April. As they grow,
64
the face, head and legs become white and the first fleece is chocolate brown. This is shorn when they are 15 months and after shearing their fleece is silver grey. The sheep are very important to Cumbria. They cannot be replaced with another breed as they would wander off. Beatrix Potter bought Hill Top Farm in Cumbria in 1905. She decided to keep a flock of Herdwick sheep. Over the years she bought more farms to preserve the countryside she loved so much. She was President of the Breed Association for a time and exhibited her sheep at many shows. In 1943 she bequeathed 15
farms to the National Trust, 4,000 acres in total, with the instruction that all must continue to keep Herdwick sheep. The Herdwick’s grey fleece is coarse and is good for making carpets. It is also good for insulating lofts. The meat being slow to mature is tender and tasty. Herdwick lamb and mutton were eaten at Queen Elizabeth’s coronation in 1953. It may seem unwise to have Herdwicks down in our part of the world but after the Foot and Mouth outbreak in 2001 they were severely affected and it was considered important to have flocks elsewhere to preserve the breed.

Sheep Sense (from a local farmer)
Herdwick Sheep in Burghley Park
• The common assumption that sheep are stupid is wrong. They may be self-willed, awkward and escape artists but these characteristics indicate intelligence not stupidity! • A flock of sheep soon learn human signals – for instance they will come for food when a plastic bag is crackled. • To a human one baa may sound like another but actually each sheep has its own voice. When a ewe says, “Get back here” her own lambs will understand. • Some sheep have hair instead of, or as well as, wool. Herdwicks have both and Wiltshire Horn sheep have hair that they shed. Today breeders are trying to breed other ‘Easy Care’ sheep that shed their own wool. • Ewes have two teats. If they have one lamb it will normally feed from both but if they have twins the lamb carried on the left in the womb will feed from the left teat and the lamb carried on the right in from the right teat. • Britain has more sheep than the rest of Europe so our lamb and mutton prices can depend on the export market. Last Local year prices were very poor but early indications are that Herdwick things will be better this year. Products • Sheep’s greatest enemies are dogs and their At the Wool Room, home of wool irresponsible owners. The sheep are owned and managed by the Mitchell family of Easton-on-the-Hill who are expert shepherds and graziers and understand the special requirements of Burghley Park. When the Herdwicks first arrived they were escape artists as it was an unusual environment for them and they were a long way from home. Now they are getting used to living in Stamford and settling down. There are large areas of grazing in the Park and the sheep do an important job in keeping the grass in good condition for the wide variety of events that take place there. Stamford Museum Collection Stamford is a very important historic town, but despite this its heritage collections have had a chequered history. The first museum was in the Institution in All Saints’ Street, opposite St Peter’s Green. The foundation stone was laid in 1842 and a collection was built up by donations from local people. After the opening of the library in 1906 the Institute decided to sell the contents of the museum and hand the building back to the Marquess of Exeter. There was a good attendance at the sale but many lots were disposed of cheaply. For instance a collection of 76 silver groats was sold for £10 and bound volumes of the Stamford Mercury from 1808 to 1909 realised only £2 10s. The whole sale only raised £150 and much of Stamford’s history which should have stayed in the town was lost. Stamford did not have another museum until 1961 when a small one was opened in the library as part of the celebrations to mark the 500th anniversary of the granting of the charter to the town. The museum appealed for artefacts for their new collection. People looked back
with regret at the amount which was lost in the 1910 sale and donated generously. In 1976 the collection was moved to the former Technical School on Broad Street. As the local industries closed they donated their archives, including an engine from Blackstones and a collection of dolls’ furniture from the Doltoi Company. There are many pictures in the collection including a number by Wilfred Wood. There is information about Hayes the carriage makers who traded in Scotgate, Picks who built cars in the early 20th century, Phillips and Melbourne breweries and the railways and schools. This museum closed to the public in 2011 but the collection remained in the store behind the building and was available on request via Stamford Library. As the Library will in future be run by Greenwich Leisure, Lincoln County Council considered moving it to Lincoln but they have now reconsidered and are searching for a place to house the collection here in Stamford so that history does not repeat itself.

BRINGING LOCAL FOOD TO LIFE
The story of Nelson’s Butchers With four shops and one pie factory in Stamford and Rutland, local legend Nelson’s is still going strong. By Matt Wright n’s Making Nelso rd fo am St pies in s ie xt Si e th in
Guy Gilman
B
UTCHERS’ shops are like vinyl records. Once ubiquitous, then chucked out in favour of tapes, CDs and minidiscs (supermarkets) and now revered again due to their superior quality and traditional feel. Not too long ago, every village had its own butcher’s but now even some city centres are bereft. In fact, according to various online sources, over the past 25 years, the number of independent butchers in the UK has fallen from around 15,000 to 6,000. But the specialist meat purveyor is on the rise again. Many of us have realised their true worth: the fact they often (but not always) source from local farms, thereby reducing food miles; the fact they offer a bespoke service so you can ask them to do special cuts; the fact they don’t tend to sell horsemeat labelled as beef. Four local butcher’s shops that have carried on regardless for what seems like forever display the word “Nelson’s” above the door. Nelson’s HQ is in Stamford, where it has not one but two shops plus a production facility – for making pies among other products. A third Nelson’s sits on Oakham High Street, and a fourth is located in Uppingham. It also has a mobile shop that drives out to various local villages. So what’s the story of Nelson’s, a name that’s surely been responsible for more Sunday lunches and Christmas dinners in Stamford and Rutland than any other? Well, today it’s run by local man Guy Gilman, who has been with Nelson’s for 40 years. Guy’s uncle, Frank Gilman, a local farmer, bought the business in 1952 from Harold Nelson, and Harold acquired the business in 1924. Nelson’s original shop is in Stamford’s Red Lion Square, which has been a butcher’s shop since at least 1826 and used to be called Hall’s. Guy says: “When I started with Nelson’s there were more shops – one in Barrowden, another in North Luffenham and two in Oakham. We also had more mobile shops – five or six. “The factory here in North Street, Stamford, where we make pork pies and other things, was built in 1959. Before that, Nelson’s pies were baked in old coke ovens in the cellar of the Red Lion Square shop. The factory was built on North Street because there used to be a slaughterhouse on the top side of the car park, which closed in about 1970.”

So what’s the secret behind Nelson’s success, when so many other butchers have fallen by the wayside? Part of it is using good quality local suppliers, including local cattle farmers Jim Thraves in Empingham and Richard Wright in Tilton on the Hill, and pig farmer John Millard in Cambridgeshire. “We’ve always kept up the quality of our products,” says Guy. “As soon as you lose the quality you’re in trouble.” The other part is the fact that Nelson’s has stuck to its guns during a period when supermarkets have become so dominant. “We try to do things differently to supermarkets,” says Guy. “We take a traditional approach. We still butcher the meat in the shops; it doesn’t all come to us pre-packed in boxes.” And it’s that bespoke, high quality ethos that has attracted trade from local pubs and eateries including The William Cecil, The Bull & Swan and The George in Stamford; Gates’ Nursery in Cold Overton and, in Uppingham, places like The Vaults and The Falcon. Guy continues: “We’ve also held on to our staff – some of the team have been here for 20 or 30 years. Customers like going into the shops and seeing faces they recognise. They like to deal with someone they know and can relate to.” In Stamford, customers can choose between two familiar shops – on Broad Street and Red Lion Square. Why not close one and consolidate? “They both do a good trade,” says Guy. “They draw people from different ends of town. I wouldn’t know which one to close.” About the writer Matt Wright founded and Nelson’s has been a runs Greatfoodclub.co.uk, a big part of Stamford and Leicestershire-based website that Rutland since 1924. EATING OUT
No 3 The Yard If you’re looking for a top-quality meal in Stamford, Nicholas Rudd-Jones thinks that No. 3 The Yard is hard to beat
O
NE very cold February evening I went along to No 3 the Yard, tucked away in a courtyard in Ironmonger St, with writing and walking companion, Sarah Stirling, to plot out some urban rambles for her to carry out in Wales, for our website www.urbanrambles.org Or at least that was the ostensible reason for going. But the reality was the sheer pleasure of the excellent food and service. In the evenings there is a three-course set menu at £22, or an à la carte option, which we went for. Sarah chose the tempura tiger prawns with chilli mayonnaise to get going, and declared them to be absolutely delicious; whilst I set to on the black pudding and crispy bacon, with a soft boiled egg salad & apple dressing, which turned out to be rich and satisfying. Time between courses enabled us to map out a few obscure routes through Welsh cities, but the main courses undoubtedly merited
our full attention. Sarah tucked into the roast lamb rump with garlic & rosemary Dauphinoise potatoes, green beans, toasted almonds & lemon oil. The chef had the confidence to cook the lamb rare, which allows its natural flavour to come through. And I plumped for the confit duck leg, with roasted red onion, buttered Savoy cabbage, mash & spiced jus. Again, a very rich and delicious dish and, if duck is your thing, I recommend you come here for it, they do it very well. On the basis that we were going to walk long distances in the future and would need sustenance, we felt that desserts were justified, Sarah opting for the pear & almond tart, with pear parfait and crème Anglaise; and I for bread & butter pudding – something I hardly ever opt for, it being usually too stodgy and lacking distinctive flavours, but I had confidence by now in no. 3’s attention to detail, and I was not disappointed. In a nutshell, this restaurant deserves your patronage. • 3 Ironmonger St, Stamford PE9 1PL Tel: 01780 756080 www.no3theyard.co.uk Sign up to the members’ area and receive all the latest news, events and offers.
The Berkeley Arms, Wymondham Six years on Louise and Neil Hitchen continue to wow customers and judges alike. For the 5th year running, The Berkeley Arms has received a Michelin Bib Gourmand for good cooking at moderate prices. And we can see why. Abigail Richardson and Janie Johnson Crossfield enjoy a not so ‘lite lunch’ at one of our favourite pubs
I
N order to thank loyal friend and neighbour (what would I do without her?), I took Janie for a girls’ lunch. I had heard rumours that Louise and Neil were moving to Oakham, sadly not, but the 6 mile drive is no hardship when one knows what is waiting at the other end. I had already informed Janie of the Berkeley Arm’s signature dish – fish and chips, and so her decision was made prior to arrival…..But I managed to persuade her into sharing a starter and a pud – well, all in aid of a good cause! We opted for the twice baked cheese soufflé – incredible – light and fluffy, “not to cheesy” (that wouldn’t have bothered me), mouth-watering and huge! Having had Hambleton bread as an appetiser, we were beaten. I would not make that mistake again and in fact the soufflé would happily serve as a main, possibly with a side salad - what value for money that would be, Monsieur Gourmand. My main was the Pan seared scallops, cauliflower purée with pancetta and breadcrumbs – and a side of chips please?
70
Again, beaten but what incredible flavours and texture. I adore scallops and find they can often be over cooked. Not the case here. I didn’t need the chips, particularly as Janie left most of hers (even though they are the fattest, crispiest and most delectable of pleasures) as her fish was also incredibly generous. Janie would have preferred crispier batter but thought the quality and cooking of the fish to be outstanding. The dessert was a masterpiece, both visually and gastronomically – Dark chocolate mousse with coffee cream, honeycomb, white chocolate ice-cream on a toffee crumb. Again vast but Louise assure me that ladies half our stature (what was she implying?) easily manage 3 ‘full’ courses. Janie would have preferred the cream on the side and Louise understood why this would suit bona fide chocolate lovers…I was happy either way. I would definitely recommend this as a sharing dessert – and all for £6.50! • 59 Main St, Wymondham, Melton Mowbray LE14 2AG Tel: 01572 787587 www.theberkeleyarms.co.uk

FOOD & DRINK
Meals on Wheels
Spring has sprung, which means we can look forward to spending more time outside, hopefully enjoying the sunshine, and getting involved in a few of our wonderful local outdoor events. This month, Deborah Pennell, takes a look at the array of scrumptious foods our local Outdoor Event Caterers can provide
G
ONE, are the days when you went to a local Country Show or major outdoor event, and the only things on offer to eat were anaemic looking Sausages in a roll or Fish and Chips and a Mr Whippy ice cream. These days we are completely spoilt for choice. With wonderful options like Hog Roasts, Paellas, Vietnamese Street food and Pizzas, to name but a few. Eating at local shows and festivals can be as enjoyable as eating in a good quality restaurant. Local husband and wife team, Simon and Sarah Singlehurst from NEW LODGE FARM, BULWICK are experienced caterers for outdoor events. Using all home reared or local meat they are well known for their traditional Hog Roasts, with the option of Ox Roasts, Lamb Roasts and BBQs too. Regulars of the Stamford Farmers Market, they also cater at Vintage Car Shows, Point to Points and the Burghley Fine Food Markets. In addition to these events, they often take on Christenings, Birthday Parties and Weddings where they provide all the food or work alongside local caterers. • 01780 450493 www.newlodgefarm.com
Duncan and Rachael Robinson, of GROOVY FOODS provide traditional Hog and Lamb Roasts, but also do some amazing Alternative Hog Roasts. Their mouth-watering choices include: • The Raj Roast: Tandoori infused pulled pork cooked and served with Indian Roti, salad and mango chutney. The Havanna Hog: Jamaican style Jerk pork, served with sour lime cream, sweet mango salsa and sourdough bread. The Oriental Pig: Five Spice pulled pork with hoisin sauce, spring onions and rice pancakes. El Mexicana: Mexican spiced pork served with salsa and tortillas in fajitas with cheese. And finally, the amusingly named Ali Baa-Baa! Moroccan style Lamb roast served with harissa in pitta. Their Gourmet BBQ offers treats such as their Award Winning Sausages, homemade

Aberdeen Angus Burgers and slow roast beer bbq pork ribs. With a busy summer ahead, we can expect to see them serving up their exciting food at The Rat Race at Burghley, the Bourne Carnival and Classic Car Show and lots of other local events. • 01778 424420 Groovy-foods.co.uk. Facebook – Groovy Foods Stuart Stables and his team from local butchers, GRASMERE FARM, are seasoned pros at providing Outdoor Event catering for large numbers. Their food revolves around their homebred Pork so you can expect anything from traditional Hog Roasts, to Pulled Pork rolls and BBQs full of sausages. Their Catering trailers have the capacity to feed large crowds, so as well as being out and about at our local Farmers Markets, they also take part in major local events such as Burghley Horse Trials, where they sell over a mile of sausages and the equivalent of 1.5 tonnes of meat products! • 01778 342344 www.grasmerefarm.co.uk
WILLOW BROOK FARM, is based on the road between Ufford and Marholm. This family run Butchers, Farm Shop and Café also find time to cater for Outside Events. As the weather improves they have a regular, twice monthly, Vintage and Classic Vehicle Meet in one of the farm’s fields, which is always popular. All their beef is home produced and their pork is sourced locally. Their Great Willow Brook Hog Roast comes with all the trimmings and the Ox Roast can be served in a bread bun or alternatively as a traditional roast with Yorkshire Puddings, vegetables and lashings of gravy. • Contact Rosemary Morton 01780 740261 or 07718 971900 www. willowbrookfarmshop. co.uk

Since converting her 1971 Citroen HY Van in 2012 Sharon Tait, owner of KITSCHEN has been busy. A regular at Uppingham Junior Rugby Club and Oakham School sports events, Sharon will be serving delicious Vietnamese Street Food at the Rutland County Show in June. We can also find her at the Oakham Proms in the Park, and The Rutland Water Food and Drink Festival. Always happy to work with the client, Sharon did a tagine/hummus/ fattoush menu last year for a party and has her Van booked to be used as a Champagne bar for a party of 100 guests, in the not too distant future. • Sharon Tait 07745 491121 www.kitschenvan.co.uk
King’s Cliffe based Rachael Kelley, trades as THE LITTLE SOUP KITCHEN from her converted 1976 Citroen Hvan named Hugo. As well as working on the Farmers Market at Oundle on a Thursday, The Little Soup Kitchen, can be found at Rockingham Castle Horse Trials and events as far flung as the British Summertime Festival in Hyde Park, which takes place in July, and then the closer to home, Peterborough Green Meadows Festival in August. Serving extremely delicious soups, sandwiches and Chillis alongside wonderful teas, coffees and cakes, the unit can also be hired for private parties. • Rachael Kelley 07807 119906 Facebook the Little Soup Kitchen Shelley Harold became the owner of THE MORTON FISH & CHIP VAN just over four years ago. With a busy schedule, it can be spotted around the local villages during most weekday evenings. Although he still works full time as a Landscape Gardener, his out of work passion is Pizzas. About 6 years ago he bought his first mobile unit complete with wood fired oven and he now has two units and is helped by his son. Well known locally for his amazingly delicious pizzas, Dale bases himself at The Five Horseshoes at Barholm most Friday and Saturday nights. This year he will be firing up his oven at the likes of The Bourne Beer Festival and The Boston Car Show and is available to hire for any major outdoor event. He can also cater for private parties, children’s parties and festivals. • Dale Regan 07941 781 168 - woodstovepizzas@gmail.com Facebook – woodstove pizzas YOUR PAELLA, was founded in 2012, by Gary Evans and is based not far away in Wellingborough, Northamptonshire. Using very large Paella pans placed on top of their unique Paella Cart he, or one of his team, can cook delicious Mixed Paella, Meat Paella and Vegetarian Paella. With the success of his business he has recently taken charge of a new catering trailer, which can provide freshly cooked Paella as well as Spanish style Paninis for Shows and Events. Gino Rosella Snr first started selling ice cream in Kettering in 1964 and came to Stamford in 1970. He bought a second van for his sons, but after a few years they went back to owning just one van. Over the years he has attended many shows, fêtes and farming events, as well as weddings and children’s birthday parties. His most popular seller is the “99” ice cream, and he lost count a long time ago of how many boxes of flakes he has been through over the years. For Gino, the sun is always helpful, people eat more ice cream if the sun is shining and always begin booking when the better weather starts. • Gino Snr 07957 992669 - Gino Jnr 07930 917059 rosella125@virginmedia.com And finally, Spalding based NATIONAL EVENT CATERERS can provide manned catering units for all outdoor events. 8848 reaches the top Carolyn Morgan enjoys a buzzy local Indian restaurant with a Nepalese twist
T
HE restaurant was a warm, buzzy haven from the icy wind outside. Our poppadoms arrived swiftly, accompanied by a generous portion of sauces – the usual mint and mango options plus a grated carrot relish with a surprising spicy kick, and a chunky, super-hot lime pickle. The starters are the highlight of this place for me. I’m always prepared to wait the stated 20 minutes for the signature Momo – spicy lamb and coriander in half moon parcels that are a cross between tortellini and dim sum. The Machi Pakora - crispy, delicately spiced fish, with an intense sauce - were equally tasty. Our third starter was Prawn Puri – a standard dish but well executed with meltingly tasty puris and succulent prawns. All were thoughtfully presented: colourful and appealing, a cut above standard Indian restaurants. It would be tempting some time to simply feast on starters, meze style, as the menu was rather enticing, but then we’d have to forego the carefully cooked mains. We were cautious with the main course, choosing just three to share between four of us. Chicken Nepal was delicate and soothing, in a gentle coconut and mango sauce that went well with the sweet Peshwari naan. Macha Special was a good contrast – spicy fish in a tomato-based sauce with ginger and coriander. The Sichuan Inspired Lamb was the final choice and it was rich, complex and sumptuous. With no room for pudding, we just enjoyed the customary hot towels and After Eights. The bill was manageable – just over £80 for four including drinks. By the time we left at 8.30pm the place was full, but the service was prompt and friendly throughout. • 8848, 11 Broad St, Stamford, PE9 1PG Tel: 01780 767600 www.the8848.co.uk

Local School expands premises for more learning and educational possibilities in the region
E
ASTON Garford Endowed CE Primary School in Easton-on-the-Hill is currently being refurbished with new facilities to support education for primary age children in the region. The work involves creating a new entrance, new offices, and greatly enhanced spaces for the pupils. The building work began last month and is expected to be completed in a few weeks. A launch event is planned for the late spring, at which the School will be welcoming parents, businesses and local dignitaries to see how the School has changed in recent months. The current curriculum is rich and varied with a balance of academic and creative opportunities; and to widen learning opportunities the School is forging links with local businesses. Local artist Jill Hedges of Big Art in School, visits the school every Wednesday to lead outstanding art opportunities with the children as part of their creative curriculum. Future events include a shared residential trip to Norfolk for Year 3 and 4 pupils in collaboration with the school’s new partnership school Polebrook Primary School near Oundle. Later on in the year there will be a Family Fun & Sports day at the local Playing Fields, which will give the whole community the chance to get out and enjoy themselves. New Executive Headteacher Hazel Johnson, appointed in September 2015, has worked hard with the Governing Body, the Garford Trust and PDET to source monies to fund the re-development and boost this much-needed village school. She said, “Children in the local area deserve the best possible environment in which to learn and I believe that the works will transform the School into a modern and lively learning environment essential for the local community and education in the 21st century.” Mrs Johnson added: “With class sizes averaging 15 at this School, the unique personalised curriculum offered at Easton Garford Endowed CE Primary School affords children the best start to their School career. “As the School continues to develop we would love to welcome children from the wider local area and encourage visits to the School throughout the year. “Although Easton on the Hill is in Northamptonshire, the School can accept pupils from Lincolnshire, Cambridgeshire and Rutland.” • To find out more, visit www.eastongarford.org

PAUL RESEIGH E X E C U T I V E C H E F AT T H E G E O R G E H O T E L O F S TA M F O R D Where are you originally from? I was born in Cambridge and when I was very young my parents moved to live in West London. That’s where I was brought up and met my wife. We married in 1996 and have 2 children, a boy and a girl. Where did you do your training and what qualifications did you gain? I did my training at Westminster Kingsway College, in Battersea, South London and gained City & Guilds 706 1, 2 & 3. Tell me a little bit about your career before you came to The George. Once I had qualified as a Chef I took jobs locally to home, in small hotels around the Hounslow area. I also did a stint at St Anne’s Manor in Berkshire. I came to The George on 2nd November 1998, when I was 24 years old. How did you hear about the job vacancy at The George Hotel? Back in 1998, I was thinking about changing jobs, moving out of the London rat race and looking for somewhere that could offer us a better quality of life. I was reading the National Caterer magazine and came across an advert for a Senior Sous Chef position at The George. My wife’s parents are from Nottingham and they knew it had a good reputation. Without me even knowing about it, my wife sent off my CV for the job! A few days later I had a phone call and I jumped at the opportunity. We have now lived in Stamford for nearly 20 years. How have you progressed through the ranks at the Hotel? In 1998 I took up the role of Senior Sous Chef and in 2000 was promoted to Head Chef. I love the job here and I held the role of Head Chef for over a decade. Quite recently I was promoted to Executive Chef. Who are your influences when it comes to Chefs? I don’t really have one particular Chef that influences what I do. However, I make sure that I keep up to date with how the food world is changing. I eat out at restaurants belonging to top Chefs, as often as work permits. I believe you have several Dining Rooms at The George? We have the two main Restaurants; The Garden Room and The Oak Panelled Restaurant. In addition to this we also have three Private Dining Rooms; The London Room, The Lambert Room and The King Charles Room. We also cater for the Conference Suites and the Wedding Marquee, which goes up and down all summer. We are generally kept quite busy! The Menus are changed seasonally, and the team of
23 Chefs works on a shift system, as we are open 7 days a week. Have you ever cooked for anyone famous? Without sounding too smug we regularly have quite famous people dining in The George, but some notable people include Joan Rivers, Dame Judy Dench who was filming Pride & Prejudice at Burghley House, and Prince Charles whose hand I shook when he came to present Stamford Endowed School’s Duke of Edinburgh awards and he happened to pop into the hotel for a while. But, I have to say the person who would stand out the most for me, is Donald Sutherland. If you could choose your favourite dish what would it be? Ooh that’s a tricky one! ….. It would have to be a toss up between a good traditional Roast Rib of Beef or Steak and Kidney Pudding. In the Hotel, we use my Mum’s recipe, which is just delicious. Give me an interesting fact about the kitchens at The George. We use local suppliers such as our Butcher, R.W Camplejohn & Son from Leicester, and the wonderful Stamford based, Askers Bakery who supply all of our bread, whilst our Fishmonger, Wicker Fisheries Ltd, comes daily from London. It always amazes me the number of Oysters we sell. If you work it out on an annual basis it is around 13,000! What are your interests outside of work, if you have time for any? I’ve always enjoyed Judo, although these days I don’t take part in it any more. However, my son who is 14 years old, has done incredibly well at it. He fights in the U18 cadets, under 42kg category and is No. 2 in the UK, so I am very supportive of him. Otherwise, I play the guitar badly and just enjoy my time off. • The George Hotel is open 7 days a week. The Garden Room is open 7-10.30am for breakfast & then from 12noon – 11pm The Oak Panelled Restaurant is open 12noon2.30pm for lunch & 7-10.30pm for dinner Afternoon Tea is served 3.30-5.30pm Contact: 01780 750750 www.georgehotelofstamford.com STAMFORD LIVING APRIL 2016

STAMFORD PEOPLE
Cricket ace enjoys a new lease
of life at Stamford School
Pupils at Stamford School are being taught how to play sport by one of England’s cricketing heroes. Dean Headley loves his new career and enjoys living in Stamford. Nick Rennie found out a little more about the man and his successful fundraising activities
M
OST of the children he teaches weren’t even born when Dean Headley was spectacularly taking a match-winning six Australian wickets in the cauldron of an Ashes match. But 18 years later the 46-year-old former England cricketer feels privileged to be entrusted with helping shape the young lives of pupils at Stamford School. And Dean is making headlines once again by spearheading an annual community fun day at the school - the BGL Sport Bash - which raises tens of thousands of pounds for charity. He said: “I enjoy working in sport again and being given the chance to help in the development of young people. “It’s great to see a student like Zak Chappell sign as a cricket professional for Leicestershire but there is also someone like Ben Penlington, who loves his cricket, who won’t be a world beater but who will continue to enjoy playing the sport. “That’s as important to me as when students go on to make a career in sport.” Dean has worked at the school for six years. He also teaches rugby and hockey in the autumn and winter terms and has just returned from taking a party of boys on a cricket tour to Sri Lanka.
BGL Sport Bash 2016
He is in the throes of organising the popular BGL Sport Bash, which this year is on Friday July 29 and which will once again feature a cricket match involving an England Masters XI against a team of top local players. Among those who have already signed up to take part are Simon Jones and Geraint Jones, who won the Ashes with England as recently as 2005, and a Test contemporary of Dean’s from the late 1990s, Phil ‘Daffy’ DeFreitas. For the first time this year, there will be circus skills workshops, a thrilling crystal fire show and caving and climbing experiences as part of the traditional family entertainment running alongside the cricket. Proceeds will once more go to the Matt Hampson Foundation, the charity started by the paralysed former Leicester Tigers rugby player which supports young people seriously injured through sport. It’s a cause which is particularly poignant at Stamford School because it helps pupils Seb Goold, who was badly injured in a road accident two years ago, and George Robinson, who sustained serious spinal injuries playing rugby last year. Dean said: “The original idea was to organise a big community day around a cricket match.
86
“We’re hoping for a crowd of more than 2,000 and it would be great if we could match the £40,000 we raised from it last year. “The generosity of Stamford people is superb, with the auction prizes they give us and the donations. You realise what a fantastic community we live in here.” Dean, who grew up in the West Midlands, carried on a remarkable family tradition when he won his first England Test cap in 1997. His father Ron and grandfather George were both former West Indies batsmen – only the second time in cricket history where there has been three Test players from the same family in a straight bloodline. Dean played for Middlesex and Kent and turned out for England between 1997 and 1999, taking eight wickets against Australia on his Old Trafford debut and a memorable 6-60 at Melbourne the following year. He doesn’t like to single out one career highlight. But he is clearly proud of his achievements, such as taking five wickets on his county debut, becoming the first player to take three First Class hat-tricks in a year and performing so impressively in the Ashes. “They were all defining moments and the last one wouldn’t have happened if the others hadn’t happened before it,” added Dean, who lives with his wife and three children in Stamford. A back injury unfortunately ended Dean’s career at just 29. He took up a career away from sport but the lure of returning to his first love was too much to resist when the Stamford job came up. He recalled: “Having to retire only hit me when I was 37 or 38. It was like being institutionalised as a cricketer back then, like being in the army. Suddenly it all ended and there was no support for me. But you are always taught in sport not to show any weakness so I blocked everything out when I finished.” Dean added: “I would have been wealthier had I played in the modern era and I wouldn’t have been working here at the school after retiring. “But then I wouldn’t have had this great opportunity to work with children and help develop their lives.” • You can book tickets for the BGL Big Sport Bash on July 29 by going online to www.bglsportbash. co.uk and for details about VIP hospitality packages email info@dcrevents.co.uk
