ere we are at last in a ‘proper’ English summer – a British winner at Wimbledon, glorious sunshine, competitive in the Ashes and the grass turning yellow. Wasn’t it always like this?! I wish everyone a lovely summer holiday, whether it be a quick dash across to the beaches of North Norfolk or a longer trip abroad. Travelling costs a lot and can be full of hassle but boy does it clear the mind and help one see the world in a broader perspective. We are just back from summer holidays (early this year), so I am looking forward to a month in glorious Stamford, hanging out in the cafés and writing an article on the lanes. Enjoy your break.

Travel in Style

Sally Stillingfleet has been seeking the advice of travel experts Anne Brown and daughter and Becca, owners of T&C Robinson, on what luggage to buy and how to pack for those all important summer holidays Luggage “There’s nothing worse than turning up at the airport to check in and your carry-on luggage is 1cm bigger than the budget airline’s dimensions! American Tourister (part of the Samsonite group) have built cases to exactly fit the strictest airline restrictions; it makes purchasing a case that much easier.” Becca told me. I could not believe the lightness of these cases and the stylish colours. There are a few ranges in stock, varying in sizes as well as larger cases. “The Day Bag – When out exploring your holiday destination it’s important to find a bag that can carry all your necessities such as water, guidebook, camera, water proof (hopefully not in all cases) and passports,” Becca explained. I was particularly impressed with the Healthy Back Bag! With its shape, lightweight material, light interior, array of pockets and a whole host of colours, it is a stylish and practical bag (these two hardly ever meet!) which is designed to be ergonomically friendly on your back, shoulders and neck. There’s a range of sizes starting at the Baglett ( £13.50 ) which can double as a bum bag, working up to Baby Bags and even Gent’s bags.

Above: Nieves Lavi print maxi dress £120 Arch Label Agency. Orla Kiely fun towel £39.95 Sinclairs. Orange Mel flipflops £20 Sly. Travel document case from £19.95 T&C Robinson. Bracelet as before in turquoise. Purple Lunar ‘Jelly shoes’ £19.50 Sly. Green Sea folly bikini top £36 and bottoms £34 Chameleon.

Sun Protection A Tilley Hat is a great bit of kit. These Lightweight hats come with a guarantee, they’re insured against loss, they protect from UV, they repel water, tie on and even float!

Good swimwear Since turning up on my honeymoon to find a much older lady in my chosen bikini I always seek out the swimwear not everyone will have! Avoid the High Street and take expert fitting advice from the Chameleon team. They have a fantastic range of one-pieces, bikinis, cover-ups and sandals.

Versatile shoes The Laid back London sandals will double as pool-side sandals and will look great in the evening with a maxi dress. Multi functional ‘jelly shoes’ from Sly will ensure you can look good on pebbles but also comfortable walking on a City break.

Andrews-Coins, Numismatist OK, I will admit, that’s the first time that word has ever appeared in our magazine. So what’s the dictionary definition? Numismatics is the study or collection of currency, including coins, tokens, paper money, and related objects Andy Pond is our man: “I specialise in locating and dealing in old coins. I have 20 years experience in the numismatic coin trade, generally in British coins but some foreign are welcome too. As a boy of 11 years I found my first coin whilst digging up worms for fishing in the River Welland, which was a George III 1806 half penny which was about worthless! But it put me on the road to my first collection, and I’ve never looked back.” “Generally I’m interested in British History and dates rather then what the coin is actually made from, but with bullion price being what it is in the present climate there is a cross over section where bullion takes over because of poor condition.” THINKING OF SELLING? “As a constant buyer of coins I will be able to give you a strong realistic price, which in some cases may well surprise you. When a price is agreed there will be no waiting for an auction or a third party. The price agreed is the price paid. Basically, don’t throw anything away that is pre-George VI!” • Contact details: www.andrews-coins.co.uk, info@andrews-coins. co.uk. Mob: 07754 949760

Smallwood Architects open office in Stamford Chelsea-based Smallwood Architects are opening a new office in Stamford. The firm specialises in classical and traditional architecture, working all over Great Britain and overseas to create and enhance their clients’ homes. For over 35 years, Smallwood Architects have been well known for their expertise with listed buildings and the challenging planning issues which are intrinsic when working with historic houses. The Directors and Associates win praise from their clients for their sensitive approach to each project. They take time to listen, and therefore to understand how their clients live, and painstakingly design houses and spaces to suit their exact needs. Recently, Smallwood Architects have been working on a number of projects in Rutland and Leicestershire, leading the directors to set up the new office, which will be run by local architect, Julius Geeson. He commented, “We are delighted to be opening a new office in beautiful Stamford. We are thoroughly enjoying our work on a Rutland Farmhouse and a new house in a walled garden and being based locally will be of great benefit to us and to our clients.” • The new Smallwood Architects office will be located opposite the George Hotel at 11a High Street, St. Martins, Stamford, PE9 2LF. ‘Children Are Our Future’ On Friday 2nd August friends and families of all Year 5 and 6 pupils from seven different primary schools in Stamford will be rushing through the doors of Stamford Art Centre from 7pm onwards to view and admire their child’s amazing sculptures. The event was organised and funded by STADFAS, the Stamford Decorative and Fine Arts Society, who have been working alongside the Stamford Cluster for the last few years, supporting Cluster art events and offering funding and volunteers to help ensure the continuation of the Cluster holiday programme. This event was the brainchild of Sandy Lawson, from the local STADFAS who has worked tirelessly with the other members to finance this amazing project. The much sought after sculptor, William Ashley Norman, went into every primary school in the Stamford Cluster and spent a day or more helping the children make their own fantastic sculptures. The schools participating in this amazing project are the Bluecoat School, St. George’s Primary School, St. Augustine’s Primary School, St. Gilbert’s Primary School, Malcolm Sargent, Uffington and Stamford Junior School.

Marcia May Shoes Lyn Johnson has been appointed as Manager of Marcia May shoes, where she begun work last month. She brings a wealth of shoe industry experience with her, latterly running a specialist children’s shoe shop in King’s Lynn. Re-locating with her family to this area, the opportunity came up to join the Marcia May team, an opportunity which was too good to say no to. “It’s great to start work with an established brand that stocks such a strong range of quality shoes. I am especially enthusiastic about developing our kids’ section over the coming months, and look forward to welcoming many families into the shop this month as preparation starts for the autumn term. We have a lot to offer, and set great store in making sure that every child has a really good fit.” • Marcia May Shoes, 41 St Mary’s St, Stamford, PE9 2DS Tel: 01780 766608

HOT RIGHT NOW Summer beauty heroes

Genevieve Potter talks to some of Stamford’s top beauty experts to find out which products and treatments they recommend most highly to their customers (and of course, will be using themselves), this summer.

NEETA FROM FLAWLESS FACES BB creams are well-established but the new Hydra Floral Multi BB cream from Decleor, £29, delivers amazing results; it melts in to the skin leaving your face soft, dewy and well-hydrated for summer, thanks to a 24-hour moisture activator and has an SPF 15 to protect from harmful rays. Using extensive research into colour, Décleor have managed to produce a product that suits most skin tones – it really is a secret weapon for summer! (What’s even better is that when you purchase two Décleor products, you’ll receive a free beach bag, while stocks last). Well-defined eyebrows are a must and with my own technique of “flawless brows”, which consists of brow tinting, shaping and traditional threading, you can achieve perfect, naturallooking brows (£25) We also offer eyelash tinting, or for extra beach glamour, try our Express Lash extensions just on the corner of your lashes. A Geleration manicure and pedicure in one of the season’s new pastel colours is a summer essential – the formula “cures” rather than dries like normal polish, so you can wear shoes straight away and it shouldn’t chip for at least two weeks (depending on wear and tear, it can last up to a month on toes). An express Geleration manicure or pedicure costs £23. FLAWLESS FACES ARE OFFERING 15% OFF ALL TREATMENTS DURING AUGUST 2013. • Flawless Faces, Above Browns’ Hairdressers, 3 Red Lion Square, Stamford PE9 2AJ Tel: 0844 999 3365 GISELLE FROM CHAMELEON Caudalie Divine Legs (£26), really is my new wonder product. It’s the answer to all the streaky self-tanners with unpleasant scents; a silky lotion that provides instant golden colour, which blends perfectly and dries in an instant. It smells amazing too! The colour is derived from natural chicory extract and you can adapt the intensity according to how much you apply; it leaves a delicate iridescent finish for a totally natural- looking glow. The really clever part is that it also

8

contains Carob Extract – extracted from the fruit pulp of the carob tree. This ingredient intensifies and prolongs skin’s natural tan by stimulating a protein, Kinase C. It washes off really easily and it’s so good that I use it on my arms and body too! For a gorgeous burst of citrusy sunshine, I love the Abhana White Grapefruit and May Chang Shower Gel; it’s an all-English brand which just makes me feel summery and there’s a travel size too, which is perfect for my suitcase (£17 for 250ml). Ruth Mastenbroek is an an English perfume maker and a famous “nose” in the world of fragrance. My favourite summer perfume is her “Amorosa” – it lifts the spirits with notes of watermelon and juniper and provokes so many compliments. £60 for 50 ml, £85 for 100ml. • Chameleon 5 St Mary’s Hill, Stamford PE9 2DP Tel: 01780 755405 www.chameleonboutique.co.uk

KAREN FROM MAPLES It’s important to keep your hair looking smooth and healthy during summer and I love the new Kerastase Gloss Appeal from their couture styling range (£21). It acts as an instant top coat for hair, giving deep shine without feeling greasy. Importantly it’s brilliant for fighting the frizz on those humid summer evenings. Self-tan is a must and Clarins’ So Natural Self-Tan treatment (£37), is the ultimate glow for face and body. The treatment comprises a skin smoothing exfoliation followed by a deeply pampering application of Clarins’ award-winning self-tanner. It’s the perfect way to start your holiday without the stress and damage to your skin caused by too much sunbathing, or it’s a great treatment just to enhance your skin, all ready for your summer wardrobe. A product I can’t do without this summer is the new Elemis ProRadiance Illuminating Flash Balm (£32). I sweep it on as not only a moisturiser, but a primer for the skin, I love it! My complexion looks instantly more radiant and luminous, giving me a healthy summer glow, evening out my skin tone and smoothing fine lines. This amazing product also keeps my foundation lasting all day. It’s a real multi-tasker! • Maples of Stamford, 24 St Mary’s Street, Stamford PE9 2DJ, Tel: 01780 752725 www.maplesofstamford.co.uk

EMMA FROM THE ADVANCED SKIN CLINIC First and foremost, you really have to protect your skin with Environ RAD sunscreen, which is a revolutionary sun protection cream ideal for thorough sun protection. The sun filters and sun reflecting ingredients contained in this product provide an SPF of 15, it also has natural antioxidant vitamins to increase sun protection and fight free-radicals. This product is highly recommended for all skin types and is suitable for all ages, including babies. Jane Iredale make-up is perfect for summer and if you’re feeling stuck in a make-up rut, come in and see us for a make-up tutorial, which takes around an hour and will give you step- by-step confidence to create a naturally beautiful look. My hero product is “powder me”, it can be used on the face or body and even over make-up; it tops up sun protection with an SPF of 30 whilst giving a flawless, natural finish. Because it’s a fine powder it’s perfect for the beach as the sand won’t stick to you. It comes in three shades and costs £35. Don’t step out this summer until you’ve got perfectly polished hands and feet; we offer both the Sparitual range, which is environmentally and vegan friendly, with no formaldehyde or other nasties (particularly recommended for mums-to-be) or the long-lasting Pro Polish gel system which doesn’t chip or smudge and can last three to four weeks. DURING JULY AND AUGUST YOU CAN GET A MAKEOVER, MANICURE AND PEDICURE AND A FREE ENVIRON RDA PRODUCT WORTH £19, ALL FOR £99. • The Advanced Skin Clinic, 8, High Street, St Martin’s Stamford, PE9 2LF. Tel: 01780 481155

LAUREN FROM ESSENCE OF BEAUTY Right now I love the Xen Tan Transform Luxe self-tan £24.99, which we struggle to keep in stock because it’s so brilliant. I use it to extend a Xen Tan spray tan (£20), you can apply every day or second day and your tan will last for a good two weeks. No summer would be complete without Shellac nails; the product goes on like nail polish, is instantly dry using UV light and wears like gel – lasting a good two to three weeks. The hot orange shades are particularly popular this summer and look amazing with a tan. Lash Perfect eyelash extensions are proving really popular; they are individual synthetic lashes applied directly onto your natural eyelashes (£55 for a full set). We stock a range of lengths and thicknesses so you can achieve a look that’s natural or more dramatic; they are waterproof, durable and feel very comfortable. A lot of people continue wearing the lashes indefinitely because they love the effect so much; maintenance is easy, we can apply top-up lashes every two to three weeks (from £10). • Essence of Beauty, 15 St Mary’s Street, Stamford PE9 2DF Tel: 01780 763564

SAMANTHA FROM EQUILIBRIUM My essential summer accessory is OPI GelColor (£25); hands and feet will look instantly fabulous and the effect will last for a few weeks with instant drying, no chipping worries and a longer lasting shine which will last for the duration of your holidays. There’s an amazing range of summer colours to choose from. Applying mascara in the heat can be a real problem, so before you jet off to sunny climes, I’d recommend Lash Extensions; with between 60-100 lashes in a full set, these semipermanent lashes will give you a wide eyed youthful look all day long (£85). Simply add a bit of lip gloss and you are ready to go! There’s no substitute for a gorgeously bronzed St Tropez face and body; the formula gives the best colour without any tell-tale unpleasant fake tan smells. We recommend a full body exfoliation, which makes all the difference to the finished effect, followed by professional application of the St Tropez spray tan (£35). It’s the fastest way to get bikini-ready and ensure your skin is glowing and polished with a long-lasting, natural colour. SPECIAL OFFER FOR STAMFORD LIVING READERS – LASH EXTENSIONS £50 (NORMALLY £85). BOOK OPI GELCOLOUR ON YOUR HANDS (£25) AND RECEIVE A COMPLIMENTARY FILE AND PAINT ON YOUR FEET. Has the paint been protected? This is vital. If the paint has a chalky or rough feel, it has not been protected with a varnish or wax – this means your new chest of drawers will soon be chipped, stained and basically ruined. The finish should feel smooth and spilt water should simply bead off. If buying online, always ask what wax or varnish was used. 2. What’s it like inside? Are there scruffy paint marks where the interior has not been masked off during painting? Have the drawers been lined? Is there dust on the shelves? Do the drawers stick? All these point to a careless attitude. 3. Are there drips or brush marks? The paint should have been applied carefully, so as not to drip and leave ugly blobs. If the paint has been slapped on in one thick coat, you’ll see nasty streaks and bare wood showing through.

Vacuum Store

The Vacuum Store (which recently changed its name from the Vac Centre) has just undergone a massive re-furbishment that has brought it well and truly into the 21st century. “We are celebrating our 20th anniversary in business this year,” Nick told me, “and it seemed a good time to freshen up our offering and broaden our product range still further.” The new store has many more models on display, a new range of steam cleaners and a ‘test pad’ in the middle where you can try out vacuum cleaners on different floor surfaces to see which suits your home best. No other store has this. • The Vacuum Store, 18 St Mary’s Place, Stamford, PE9 2DG. Tel: 01780 482935. www.vacuum-store.co.uk

Riverside Tapas

Ashley Marin tries out Stamford’s latest tapas offering On the corner of St Mary’s Hill and Wharf Road, with the River Welland lapping at its walls. is a building that I’ve passed many times over the years but never ventured inside. Now known as Riverside - The Venue, it is part of Thierry Daugeron’s burgeoning local foodie empire, which also includes the Stamford Cookery School and an outside catering business. If variety is the spice of life then Riverside offers those seeking out food and a drink a plentiful choice. Depending on the time of day there are three dining areas to choose from: the Riverside Café open from 9am; the Chandelier Restaurant upstairs; and a Wine and Tapas Bar. It was to the latter that we ventured on a splendid summer evening immediately after work which, to me, seems the ideal time to sample a glass or two and a selection of tapas. The tapas menu had a choice of 10 homemade and freshly cooked dishes and offered, we thought, value for money at £3-£4.50 per dish. We opted for six dishes: a meat platter with red onion chutney (a cheese platter was also available), mussels with chorizo, pan fried prawns with garlic and chilli, scallops flambé with whisky on ratatouille, toasted brioche with pan fried foie gras, and rocket with sundried tomatoes - plus bread. The ‘hot’ pan fried prawns with garlic and chilli were for us the highlight along with the delicate scallops flambé with whisky on ratatouille. Riverside offers a choice of 34 wines and has also introduced ‘wines of the month’ in which it singles out a white, rosé and red sourced from a particularly country. Australia was the country when we visited, with South Africa the choice for August. I enjoyed a refreshing unoaked Chardonnay from The Listening Station (£5.30 a glass), while Helen opted for a rosé from the Turkey Flat Vineyard (£7.50 a glass). She declared the wine ‘superb’, which it needed to be at the price! Riverside has a policy of sourcing local produce for its dishes as far as possible and it takes the same view with its wine selection working with Amps Fine Wines in Oundle. A drink, a nibble and a chat is what wine and tapas is all about and we reckon that it is possibly the only venue in Stamford offering such an option. The ‘short’ tapas menu is to be welcomed as it makes for an easy choice of dishes - which are changed regularly by head chef Neil Collins, a recent recruit by Thierry Daugeron, who has been in business in the Stamford area for 12 years. Dishes are in fact changed so frequently that there is no printed tapas menu, but a chalkboard highlighting what is available. Tapas may be thought of as only for summer. But Riverside believes that dishes can be created to match the other seasons so that a little bit of Spain is always on offer in Stamford. The Riverside Wine and Tapas Bar is open Wednesday to Sunday 5.30pm-11pm. • Riverside Wine and Tapas Bar, Wharf Rd, Stamford. Tel: 01780 766651

First Day of School Photos

The day is approaching where many tearful parents wave their children off for their first day at school. This is a stage of your child’s life that should be recorded to look back on for years to come. The sitting will be £10 and you will receive a 7x5 photo with the option to purchase further prints, bundles or digital files to share with friends and family. This offer is open to children of all ages, so those of you with older children can also use this promotion to get a good school photo! This offer is also open to siblings and group photos of school friends. • For more information or to book your sitting, contact Lyndsay on 07580 388880 or via her website www.shutterboxphotography.co.uk

fit locally, t e g o t s y a w on looks at Alysia Anders d out an both indoors Focus on fitness Let’s face it, we all know someone who pays a monthly gym membership yet hardly ever goes. New gym Rhino’s (www.rhinosgymnasium. co.uk) in Stamford has tackled this issue headon by introducing a pay-per-visit scheme alongside weekly, monthly, six-monthly or annual memberships. Its full name; deep breath required here; is Rhino’s Gymnasium Elite Sports and Conditioning. It was set up by father and son Nick and Samuel Swann and is a genuine family business, with mother Linda running reception and membership. Nick spent many years as captain of Barnack Cricket Club while Samuel played football for Ryhall United before taking up a career in natural bodybuilding. Samuel explained the motivation behind opening Rhino’s. “The vision is for an honest, non-intimidating, traditional-style gym where people can come and train, have some fun and create new friends. The casual as well as the serious trainer are all welcome. We offer a diverse range of fitness facilities like no other in the area.” The 10,000 sq ft gym features a huge range of cardio, resistance, strength and crossfit equipment, the latter including monkey bars, rope ladders and sandbags. An air-conditioned studio hosts fitness classes ranging from boot camp and boxercise to yoga and Zumba. One of the latest class crazes is Bokwa, a fun, addictive and energizing workout that can burn up to 1,200 calories a session. Qualified instructor Sam McGreevy explained: “Anybody can do Bokwa. Participants draw letters and numbers with their feet and every class is different to stop that boredom factor creeping in. Come and ‘sweat the alphabet and dance the digits’!” Sam currently teaches Monday and Friday morning classes at Rhino’s and Thursday mornings at Great Casterton village hall (07887 802621; sammcgreevy@ hotmail.com) and plans to introduce further classes in September. On the other side of Stamford, Westside Health and Fitness Club (www.westsideclub.co.uk) has a fully-equipped gym, indoor cycling studio, sauna and steam rooms, crèche and a range of classes. These include kettle bells, circuits, Zumba, Pilates and the latest addition, Powerhoop, which aims to trim the waist and strengthen core muscles. One, three and 12-month memberships are available and if you join online there is no joining fee. The gym also offers a free day pass for those wishing to try out the facilities.

Team spirit One of the great things about exercising is that you meet like-minded people with similar goals. Ladies-only Curves on Stamford Walk (01780 766978; www.curves.co.uk) offers a 30-minute workout on a variety of resistance machines to improve muscle strength and cardio fitness. There is also a Zumba circuit and, new this year, the Curves Complete weightloss programme. Combining diet, workout and motivation in group classes with a coach, the aim is to provide a sustained approach to health and fitness. Personal trainer Rob Dulieu (www. stamfordpersonalfitness.co.uk) set up Stamford Boot Camp in 2010 to offer a dynamic, fun and sociable way to get fit. His sessions have proved so popular he now employs an additional two trainers at his new indoor premises on St Peter’s Hill. Weather permitting, Rob also runs some classes at outdoor venues such as the Meadows. Sessions can be tailored towards weight loss, training for endurance events, preand post-natal exercise or recovery from injury. Classes are very welcoming with a friendly mix of men and women of all ages. Antonia Scott is one keen convert to Rob’s classes. She said: “Each Boot Camp session I’ve been to is completely different and varied so you don’t

know what to expect or get bored. Rob uses sandbags, resistance bands, skipping ropes, kettle bells and good old fashioned circuit training to get you hot and sweaty! He knows just how hard to push you and makes you achieve more than you ever thought originally possible. It’s a hard hour, but one that’s definitely value for money.” On 13 October, 38 members of Stamford Boot Camp will run the Perkins Great Eastern Half Marathon in aid of Anna’s Hope charity to help children and young adults suffering from brain tumours. Rob said “We have committed to run the half marathon which is a stretch goal for many of the team yet I am overwhelmed by the level of support from my clients for this worthy cause. Every penny we raise will be worth the hard yards we put in to cross the finish line. For anyone wishing to make a donation please go to www.justgiving. com/StamfordBootCamp.”

A right racquet Badminton is a rather overlooked sport but it’s a great way to get fit, especially when the weather prohibits outdoor exercise. Welland Valley Badminton Club, based at Stamford Junior School Sports Hall, is recruiting new members from 2 September. The club meets on

Mondays and Thursdays each week at 8pm, at a cost of £4 per two-hour session. All abilities are welcome and coaching is available. For more information contact the Chairman, Whit Brown, on 01780 753263. Stamford Tennis Club (www.stamfordtennis.co.uk) is open to players of all levels and runs various coaching sessions including Rusty Racket sessions on Monday mornings and Cardio Tennis on Thursday mornings. The latter is, as its name suggests, particularly focused on improving fitness and participants sometimes wear heart rate monitors to assess their calorie-burning progress. Squash is also excellent for aerobic and muscle fitness. Stamford Squash Club (www.stamfordsquashclub.org.uk) is based at Stamford School but welcomes players of all ages and fitness levels.

Race ahead With so many endurance events taking place locally, from Race for Life to the Rat Race Dirty Weekend, running has never been so popular. Make it more fun by joining one of the numerous clubs in the area. These include the local Stamford Striders club (www.stamfordstriders. co.uk) which meets on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays at Blackstones Sports Club on Lincoln

and if you don’t have your own bike, discounts on cycle hire are offered to encourage people to get on the saddle. On 5 August, there is a nature ride to the birdwatching reserve at Lyndon, in conjunction with The Wildlife Trust. Starting at 10am, the three-mile guided ride and osprey talk costs £10. On Saturdays in August, the Fineshade centre is running mountain biking skills courses for young riders. Sessions last three hours and run from 9am and 1pm.

Stamford Chain Gang (www.stamfordchaingang.webplus.net) welcomes recruits for its Sunday rides, meeting at 10am at the Danish Invader on Empingham Road. Other groups running regular group rides and races include Velo Club Rutland (www. veloclubrutland.org.uk) and Bourne Wheelers (www.bournewheelers.wordpress.com). Rutland Cycling (www.rutlandcycling.com) also organises riding events around Rutland Water and at its sister location in Fineshade Woods. These include rides for seniors, women-only and mums with tots. The rides are usually free

There are thriving local clubs for cricket, rugby, football and netball. For footie, there’s Stamford Football Club (www.stamfordafc.net) and Blackstones Football Club (www.blackstones. org.uk). Blackstones Sports Club is also home to the long-established Stamford Netball League. Rugby players from under-fives to over-fifties are welcome at the Stamford Rugby Club (www.pitchero.com/clubs/stamford) while Bourne Hockey Club (www.bournedeepinghc. co.uk) has junior, youth and senior teams. To enjoy the thwack of leather on willow, head to Burghley Cricket Club (www.burghleypark. com) or Stamford Town Cricket Club (stamford.play-cricket.com). tep through the doors of Ewe Wool Shop on Cheyne Lane and prepare to be inspired. This cosy little shop is stuffed from floor to ceiling with yarns of every weight, texture and colour imaginable. Rachel Parry Arch opened this haven for knitters in December 2012, taking over the shop that was formerly home to Maria’s haberdashery. The business of yarns and knitting is nothing new to Rachel, who owned and ran a shop at Top Lodge, Fineshade Forest before moving it to Stamford. Prior to that, Rachel’s career was in a completely different field, working for 15 years in business training at various colleges across the country. But her passion is knitting and Rachel designs knitting patterns and makes the most incredibly beautiful scarves, cardigans, ponchos and cushion covers too. Knitting is a great hobby; it’s relaxing, productive, it can be sociable if you get together with friends to do it (knit and natter) - and doesn’t take up much room, just a bag on your sofa. The yarns available today are so varied, with merino, cashmere, silk, cotton, angora - the list goes on - and it means you can create a unique item that you just wouldn’t be able to get on the high street. Rachel and her team are very good at helping with projects and selecting the right wool for your work. If you’re starting out, Rachel organises knitting and crocheting workshops that are held at the shop. Knitwear designer, Debbie Abrahams is running a ‘Design Your Own Blanket’ workshop on 22nd September, that’s suitable for knitters with some experience; email the shop for details: i_love_ewe@ymail.com Learn to knit and crochet workshops will be running throughout the year; please email to register your interest.

WHAT CAN YOU BUY? • The list is endless. Rachel stocks well-known brands such as King Cole (£1.95-£5.45 a roll) and Patons, one of the oldest brands around (from 85p-£4.10). • Rowan is a fashionable brand that‘s good quality and uses natural fibres and mixes (£4.25 for cotton - £18 for mohair and silk). • You’ll also find Debbie Bliss, a very popular label that’s not widely available. It comes in selfstripe, and in bright warm colours, and there’s a very popular 100% silk yarn (£9.95), as well as 100% merino (£5.50) and ‘cashmerino’ for making exquisitely soft baby items (£5.50). • If you like natural yarns, Japanese brand Noro produces luxury hand-dyed yam wool, and there are angora, wool and silk mixes too (£6.95-£15.50). • There are felt and fabric kits containing all you need to create soft animals (£9.99-£14.99), tapestry and cross-stitch kits for children and adults (£4.00-£65.00), plus buttons and ribbons, needles and crochet hooks. • For a limited time, Rachel is even giving away her own scarf, poncho and cushion cover patterns, suitable for intermediate and skilled knitters with wool purchases; an offer not to miss! • Rachel is brilliant at sourcing new and interesting products and hopes soon to stock a range of wools for the increasingly popular craft of needle felting. • Ewe Wool Shop, 17c St Mary’s Street, Stamford PE9 2DG, 01780 765351, www.i-love-ewe.com (the start of Cheyne Lane).

A Good Yarn Local premium knitwear designer Libby Summers has been designing and manufacturing hand-knitted goods in the UK since 2010. This summer, the new ‘Libby Summers Ltd’ brand introduces her own collection of yarns, produced by a family-owned wool farming business in Peru. The business helped to support a project to educate the children of the Quechuan alpaca shepherds, a tribe that’s close to Libby’s heart as she studied it at university. It was Libby’s passion for natural products and individual, handmade goods that inspired her to start her yarn and knitting business in the early 2000s. Her hand knitted items have been sold in John Lewis and have featured in several high profile publications. Libby’s website, www.libbysummers.co.uk launched in June and features beautiful, vibrantly coloured yarns (Libby Summers ‘Chunky’ at £4.50/50g, ‘Fine Aran’ at £5.75/50g), make-it-yourself kits (including her distinctive soft rabbits), and her signature handmade knitted items. You will also find her yarn and kits in Ewe Wool Shop. Libby will be hosting open days at her studio workshop where people can view the yarn and pattern collection. Details will be posted on the website. • Libby Summers, www.libbysummers.co.uk STAMFORD LIVING AUGUST 2013

Spotlight on South Africa

S

outh Africa’s extraordinary natural beauty and cultural diversity often amaze visitors to the country. Superb infrastructure, a great variety of accommodation and world class service mean that South Africa has something to offer the most discerning traveller. With a fascinating mix of indigenous inhabitants, nine provinces to explore and some superb wildlife parks, South Africa is culturally, scenically and naturally inspiring. Cosmopolitan, relaxed and with a comfortable Mediterranean climate, Capetown is the ideal gateway into South Africa; sandwiched between Table Mountain and the Atlantic Ocean, the city enjoys one of the world’s most spectacular locations. Take a cable car to the summit of Table Mountain for superb views over Cape Town and the beaches beyond; visit Robben Island where Nelson Mandela was imprisoned for three decades, or stroll along the attractive Victoria and Alfred Waterfront in the city’s old port area, full of vibrant restaurants, shops and cafés. Arts and the theatre will not disappoint and other excursions on offer delve deeper into South Africa’s political past and open doors not always visible in the city itself – The colourful Bo-Kaap area is one of the oldest residential areas in the city and home to the Malay community. Extending south of the city are many chic and leafy suburbs, Camps Bay is well known for its relaxed atmosphere, beachfront sidewalk and lively restaurant and café culture. This area is also close to the

Clipsham Has Talent!

Antonia Scott visits Clipsham for some homeware inspiration by Petra Wright Pottery and Clipsham Stone Two local companies from Clipsham are gaining popularity after being given further prominence from their renowned neighbourhood pub, The Olive Branch. For the last couple of years, Petra Wright’s Pottery has been a firm favourite since Chef Sean Hope needed a small gravy vessel to complement the steak boards, and thought her small jugs would be ideal. Petra’s pottery range has since evolved and her other products are now displayed in the pub, as well as being stocked in Snow Design and Interiors on St Mary’s Hill in Stamford. Owner, Camilla is very proud to support local artists and has had a lot of

magnificent Kirstenbosch Gardens from where hiking enthusiasts can climb Table Mountain. Cape Town is the perfect base from which to explore the Cape Winelands, the Cape Peninsula and the seaside town of Hermanus. Petra’s products can also be found at Wistow Gallery in the Wistow Rural Centre, Leicestershire. She will also be exhibiting at Emmanuel College in the Cambridge Exhibition which runs from 20th August – 4th September. Petra will complete her Level 4 in Creative Craft next year and says, “I started pottery lessons at Peterborough City College four years ago, just to try something new. I had never done any pottery before but have always been into contemporary design. I sort of got obsessed with the idea of learning to throw!” Prices start at £7 for a small jug - £48 for a teapot. Petra is also available to make commissions. Clipsham Stone Products is a new business introducing the famous local stone into our

homes. They have launched a range of hand-made homeware products, including coasters, platters and table lamps, priced from £6. Clipsham Stone was discovered by the Romans and used to create the Great North Road – now known as the A1. Clipsham Stone has been used over the centuries for many prestigious buildings including Windsor Castle, the Houses of Parliament and many of the Oxford Colleges. Its hard wearing limestone properties make it perfect for long-lasting flooring, fire surrounds, hearths and tableware, as well as exterior walling and bespoke sculptures. Clipsham Stone Products are also stocked at The Olive Branch and Snow Design and Interiors in Stamford and can be contacted for commissions for home and garden ware. • Contact: Petra Wright Pottery Email:petra. mykiln@gmail.com Tel: 01780 410 085 Clipsham Stone Email: enquiries@ clipshamstone.co.uk Tel: 01780 410 085 www.clipshamstone.co.uk www.camillasnowinteriors.com

Stamford vs. Stansted

Richard Barry learns about Stamford’s peak traffic congestion in the 1820s when it was the hub of the east Midlands’ transport system

D

uring the first half of the 18th century turnpike trusts took over from a myriad of local parishes the responsibility for maintaining the main national roads, transforming them from muddy tracks to well surfaced highways. This revolutionised the fortunes of Stamford, located on the Great North Road exactly midway between London and York. Coaching inns, stabling, and related trade (including lawyers) brought great prosperity to the town, and soon the town became a key transportation hub of the East Midlands. Today we think of regional transport hubs in terms of aviation – the great hub of Atlanta, Georgia, the Heathrow-Stansted-Gatwick hub and so forth. But in terms of transport movements, Stamford at its coaching peak was as busy as Stansted today, and on a really busy day was probably about a quarter as busy as Heathrow. This is quite a claim, but I believe it’s supported by the evidence. First: a key definition. In the airline world each “transport movement” is defined by a landing or a take-off. Flying into an airport and then flying out counts as two movements. Using this terminology, the stage coach from York to London calling at Stamford adds two traffic movements to Stamford’s total count. Reliable traffic data are hard to come by. However Stamford is lucky to have in its library a copy of “Stamford: An Industrial History” by local historian Neville Birch (1972), a gold mine of information (thank you Philippa Massey for drawing attention to this). Birch provides us with two of the three facts we need. First, he reports that in 1830 “forty mail-coaches and thirty stage-coaches passed daily through the town”. Second, that in 1827 the Wansford toll on the Great North Road collected £1630. The third fact we need is a list of toll charges, and we have this for a somewhat earlier toll on the Great Road to Worcester – comparable to our Great North Road. The Worcester toll stipulates that “no second toll may be taken on the same day” which helps us to avoid double-counting. Mail-coaches did not pay tolls. Indeed, the toll bar had to be opened so

the mail could get through without stopping, overtaking anything that was queuing to pay. A stage-coach with six horses had to pay one shilling. The glamour of the long-distance stage-coaches with their romantic names – “The Defiance”; “The Regulator”; “The Perseverance” and so forth – can easily cause us to overlook the large number of goods carriers that also used the Great North Road. With five or more horses a wagon would have paid eight pence, with smaller wagons, pack-horse trains and other users paying less. The average non stage-coach toll was probably about six pence. Now for some maths: older readers will remember that one pound was made up of 20 shillings, and each shilling of 12 pence. So the Wansford annual toll revenue of £1630 equates to 1,070 pence per day. Birch’s thirty daily stage-coaches would have paid a total of 360 pence, leaving 710 pence to be paid by all other traffic. With a six pence average, this means about 120 freight transits through the Wansford toll each day. Adding freight, stage-coaches and mail-coaches, Wansford had northbound and southbound traffic totalling 190 transits. Remembering the airline rule that a through-journey counts as two “traffic movements”, the Wansford data tell us that Stamford had 360 traffic movements each day -- and this was just on the Great North Road. In his monograph Birch reminds us of the considerable east-west traffic from Stamford to Melton Mowbray, Newark, Wisbech and so forth. We have no way of quantifying this, but it may have been a hundred or more movements each day. The Civil Aviation Authority publishes traffic movements for every UK airport. The top four are Heathrow (1262 per day), Gatwick (544), Manchester (356) and Stansted (315). So Stamford (in the 1820s) displaces Stansted, and perhaps even Manchester in today’s busyness stakes. How did Stamford cope? It’s amusing to imagine a municipal traffic controller ordering an inbound from Melton to circle Easton until cleared to enter the town. Unfortunately those records seem to be missing. STAMFORD Living AUGUST 2013

LE AR NING

Back to school – adult learning Antonia Scott visited New College Stamford for a step back to student life to see what new and interesting courses are available to adults wanting to try something new or further their knowledge. ‘ENRICHING LIVES AND CREATING SUCCESSFUL FUTURES’ The expression “Back To School” is normally greeted with groans in most family households, however when it comes to adult learning, the desire to get ‘back to the books’ or even try something new, is fast becoming a popular pastime or change of direction for many grown ups. Director of Learning at Stamford New College, John Baldwin has been running courses at the college for many years and is passionate about giving all students the best start in life – whether it’s choosing a career path at 16 or returning to learning at a later stage in your life. Head of Marketing, Peter Lawrence echoes these sentiments: “New College Stamford has really put Stamford on the map in terms of courses offered and facilities available to all our students, businesses and local community. We have a little known state-of-the-art Hair and Beauty Centre, complete with relaxing Spa facilities, where students offer hair and beauty treatments to the public at discounted prices to improve their skills and learn front of house customer services skills. Likewise there is a fantastic

24

Gallery Restaurant which reopens for the beginning of term in September, which has previously been described as “Stamford’s best kept secret”, so good is the quality and value for money of the food.” There is also a Gallery Shop selling delicious pies, breads and teatime treats such as chocolate tiffin, shortbread and other patisseries that any visiting French tourists would be proud of! The standard and presentation of the cuisine is very impressive and it’s no surprise that one of New College Stamford’s former catering pupils got through to the latter stages of Masterchef last year. The College can also host external companies in their numerous classrooms and conference room, along with the 120 seater theatre for larger conferences. The theatre is state of the art and has a sprung floor for authentic budding thespians to tread the boards! Principle, Andrew Patience reiterates, “New College Stamford offers full and part time Foundation Degrees, Higher National Diplomas and Higher National Certificates across a variety of different subjects, along with specialist qualifications and the option to ‘top up’

to an Honours degree thanks to our partnerships with universities. Higher Education is accessible to everyone – our current students range in age from 18 to over 60 and come from an assortment of backgrounds. So whether you have just finished your A Levels and are looking for the next step, or are a mature student searching for a challenge or a career change, a Higher Education qualification could be just around the corner.” There are numerous courses on offer for adults (anyone over 19) to dip their toes back into either academic learning or those wanting to try something completely different. The courses are all run for 5 weeks during term time, usually starting in September, November, January or March; with many of them being free and the others making a nominal charge of £20 for course materials, making learning accessible to all. So, aside from learning a language or brushing up on your History of Art, why not try your hand at the wide range on offer: Vegetable Growing, Chicken Keeping, Sugar Rose Cake Decorating, Animation or Buying and Selling on Ebay for starters. Or perhaps you’ve always fancied trying your hand at Barbering, or picking up British Sign Language, or you might have a desire for a cold blooded chameleon, then Looking After Your Reptiles is the course for you! There’s Sewing for the Terrified or Advanced Upholstery, Cycle Mechanics for bike lovers and even Line Dancing if that’s your guilty pleasure. There really is a course for everyone, so start something new this autumn and enrich your life.

The Ash Tree The ash tree is the third commonest tree species in Britain and has given its name to places all over the country from Ash in Kent to Achadh an Uinnsinn (Ashfield) in Stirlingshire and locally to Ashwell in Rutland. There are ash trees on the outskirts of Stamford and it is common in the countryside around about. Jean Orpin and Sue Lee have been finding out more.

A

sh is a native broadleaf tree which grows up to 40 metres and can live up to 150 years. It is deciduous and its normal life cycle is to flower in April, be in full leaf by May and shed its leaves in October. The winged seed pods called keys hang in bunches, sometimes staying on all winter. Ash plays an important part in the countryside as it provides a habitat for more than a hundred species of insects and many birds, who make their nests and also enjoy the seeds. The light canopy means that sunlight can pass through allowing flowers to grow underneath such as bluebells and wild garlic.

Uses of Ash Wood Ash wood was used by the Anglo-Saxons for spears and handles for their shields because it is strong and flexible so acts as a natural shock absorber. The same properties made it suitable in coach-making and later for the wings of the De Havilland Mosquito aircraft. It continues to be used for tool handles, hockey sticks, oars and furniture as it does not splinter.

Folklore The most familiar saying associated with the ash tree is:Ash before Oak we are in for a soak Oak before the Ash we are in for a splash. (In fact usually the oak is in leaf long before the ash! ) Not surprisingly with such a widespread native tree, there are various other pieces of folklore about it including • Witches brooms were made with an ash staff • Witches lived in ash trees • The wood was burnt to ward off evil spirits • Sea travellers carried ash wood crosses as mascots to ward off evil • Ash was considered a healing tree, used in the north of England as a cure for rickets and warts

The Bad News

disease, commonly called ash dieback has spread across Europe since the early 1990s and was first identified in Britain early in 2012. By the end of the year infected trees were found in several sites in eastern England Watch carefully for signs and by the middle of 2013 over 500 cases were of disease and report anything confirmed covering most of the country. Imports suspect particularly if you have an of nursery stock from abroad have been halted but ash tree in your garden now signs have been found in young trees here. It is now thought it could also be carried on clothing, Signs to look for footwear and vehicles from Europe or by the wind. Blackened dead leaves As a result it will be very difficult to prevent the Veins of leaves turning brown spread of the disease. Die back of twigs and branches

What you can do

The Good News

Scientists at the Norwich Research Park (a partnership between the John Innes Centre, the Genome Analysis Centre and the Sainsbury Laboratory) have ‘sequenced’ the genomes of both the fungus and an ash tree that has proved resistant to it. Although the spread of the disease is unlikely to be halted, there is now a genuine hope that it will be possible to breed a strain of ash that is unaffected by the disease. These could then be used to replace those that perish and restore this feature so natural to our countryside.

More information If you would like to find out more or want to report any signs, there is a Chalera helpline on 08459 33 55 77 or look at one of the following websites. The Woodland Trust www.woodlandtrust.org.uk The Forestry Commission www.forestry. gov.uk/chalara

A Taste of Rutland

Sean Hope goes fishing and tickles some trout to produce a little culinary magic… Seeing as Rutland Food & Drink Festival is rapidly approaching on September 14 [see panel], I thought I’d look at an ingredient that has been local to England’s smallest county since about 1975. That ingredient is trout, which have been swimming in Rutland Water since shortly after the reservoir was created 40 or so years ago. Today Rutland Water is full of trout, both brown and rainbow (although the former is rarer), not to mention fish varieties such as zander, eel and pike. Fresh Rutland Water rainbow trout makes a wonderful local ingredient and is superb simply baked with lemon wedges and a few choice herbs at Gas Mark 4 (180C) for 25 minutes. However, I’ve got a slightly more interesting recipe here for a dish that we’re currently serving at The Olive Branch.

Rutland Water trout brandade

Rutland Food Festival 2013 The Rutland Food & Drink Festival takes place on September 14 at Rutland Water, Sykes Lane entrance (near Empingham), from 10am-6pm. The event will showcase wonderful food and drink from around the county and there will be cooking demonstrations from local chefs. Rutland Day celebrations take place on the same site as the food festival, so as well as great food and drink stalls, there’ll be live music, entertainment for children and lots more. Entry to Rutland Day and the food festival is free, but there is a car parking charge of £5 per car. Alternatively you could catch the Rutland Shorelink bus to the event (see www.rutland.gov.uk/shorelink).

Serves 6 • 1kg fresh Rutland Water rainbow trout fillets • 250g sea salt • 150g caster sugar • Juice of 1 lemon and 1 lime Method for curing the fish 1. Line a deep-sided tray with cling film. 2. Mix the salt, sugar and citrus juices together in a mixing bowl. 3. Place half the cure mix on to the lined tray, then lay the trout fillets flesh-side down on top. 4. Place the remaining cure mix on top of the trout fillets and cover completely. 5. Place in the fridge and allow to marinade for approximately three days (until the fish fillets have firmed up slightly). 6. Remove the trout fillets from the cure mix (retain the mix if you wish as it can be used twice). 7. Rinse the trout and soak in cold water for 30 minutes before poaching. For the poaching liquid • 2 sprigs thyme • 2 bay leaves • 1 shallot • 1 garlic clove • 200ml whipping cream • 200ml milk • 1 tbsp chopped dill Method 1. Place the cured trout fillets into a large saucepan and add the remaining ingredients. 2. Poach the trout on a simmer for 15 minutes, then remove from the heat and allow to cool. 3. Remove the trout from the poaching liquid and place onto a tray, then carefully pick the flesh from the bones and place in a mixing bowl. 4. Strain off the poaching liquor and add back to the poached trout with 500g of mashed potato. 5. Mix well, then add one tablespoon of chopped dill and mix again. 6. Serve warm or cold with toasted sourdough bread (from Hambleton Bakery, to continue the Rutland theme) and a wedge of lemon.

ake a beautiful four year aged balsamic from Modena and reduce it, effectively stimulating a longer ageing process to make it richer, thicker and sweeter. Not a chocolate sauce, although you could be led to believe otherwise. It’s a fine balance between the bitter chocolate, the heady aroma and sweetness of the vanilla and the tangy sweet, aged balsamic. The Gourmet Spice Company’s Chocolate and Vanilla Balsamic is a store cupboard ‘must have’. When Mark Hughes decided on a career change he quite simply asked himself, “What do I love doing?” “I love spice,” and this was the rationale behind Mark’s move after 20 years in corporate life to one of food. “Once I had decided on spice I wanted to expose the misconception that spice means hot. We think it’s about hot but really it’s about layers of taste,” says Mark. Mark is endlessly curious about taste combinations and has stumbled across different ways to blend tastes that really work.

Somewhere along the line it’s the curiosity that has become the mantra for ‘Taste Spice”, says Mark. A pinch of this, a splash of that to get incredible taste with real, natural ingredients. “I wanted to create flavour combinations that aren’t generally seen, like adding Goji berries and fennel to our Salmon Spice rub, infusing classically Asian spices to create our Spiced Aromatic Aged Balsamic Vinegar and even soaking peppercorns in bourbon for a few days

for our Fire-pit BBQ rub just because, well, I wanted to see what would happen. And in the case of the peppercorns and whisky, it took the product to a new level of taste.” Mark encourages his customers to be curious and creative about how they use his range of products. So that’s what we’ve done with his deliciously great Chocolate and Vanilla Balsamic Vinegar! “I have lived much of my life in the Leicester area and am now based from Weldon, along the Oundle Road towards Corby,” says Mark. Find out more at www. tastespice.co.uk. Look out for Mark as he can be found at a number of local food events. Having already attended Uppingham Feast, Belton House Food Festival, he will be at the Oundle Food Festival on Sat July 20th and the Big Sausage Festival in Lincoln on October 26th. EATING OUT

Vegetarian Taste of Alimentum May 20-26 was National Vegetarian Week in the UK and to mark it the Michelin-starred Restaurant Alimentum in Cambridge launched a 7-course vegetarian tasting menu, costing £65. The good news is that this vegetarian taster menu is still available on an on-going basis; just mention it when you book. Now, although all restaurants in our region offer at least one vegetarian dish to pacify the non-meat eater, it is not often that a lot of thought goes into it – it’s often a quite bland pasta or quiche dish that leaves at least one of the diners disappointed. The philosophy at Alimentum is entirely different. Head chef Mark Poynton is famous for his passion for vegetables, and is driven by seasonal ingredients and slow cooking techniques that accentuate flavour. There’s nothing lowly about leeks or carrots at Alimentum – unlike most chefs, Mark designs all of his dishes (herbivorous or not) around vegetables before adding the protein, making him a master of the meat-free menu.

Tuk Tuk Foods We all know and love Tuk Tuk Foods for her market stall on Saturdays in Red Lion Square where she can cook you up fresh and tasty Thai Food on the spot. Well, she is also an excellent choice for outside catering, offering a delicious range of finger food dishes. Here is a typical example: Vegetarian Spring Rolls: noodles, mixed vegetables and Chinese mushrooms wrapped in rice paper, served with Tuk Tuk Foods Hot Sweet Chilli Dipping sauce. Money Bags (Tung Thong): crispy golden bags filled with minced king prawns, served with Tuk Tuk Foods Tamarind Dipping Sauce. Thai Fish Cakes (Tod Man Pla): cod blended with Tuk Tuk Foods Red Curry paste, lime leaves and cucumber salsa. Chicken and Mixed Vegetable Satay: marinated chicken grilled on bamboo skewers, served with Tuk Tuk Foods Satay sauce and freshly pickled vegetables. Mixed Vegetable Satay: char grilled mushrooms marinated with Tuk Tuk Foods Mixed Thai herbs, served with Satay Sauce and Coriander. The flavours are outstanding, and this makes a refreshing change from the standard buffet fare of sausage rolls and scotch eggs. MOT OR ING

Is greater model choice a good thing?

Vehicle owners have never had a greater range of new cars to choose from than in today’s market, as Ashley Martin discovers

N

ot only are there approximately 50 different motor manufacturers selling cars into the UK market ranging from Abarth, a division of Fiat, to Volvo, but new model ranges continue to be introduced as vehicle designers, engineers and marketeers find niches to exploit. The fabled Mini, now part of the BMW Group, can be bought, for example, in an incredible seven different guises - the Paceman now selling alongside the Hatch, Clubman, Convertible, Countryman, Coupé and Roadster. Meanwhile, the word ‘crossover’ has been introduced to the motoring vocabulary as manufacturers mix the virtues of the MPV (multi-purpose vehicle or people carrier) with the SUV (sports utility vehicle or fashionable off-roader) with the long-established hatchback to deliver a new type of car as most recently illustrated with the Renault Captor due to enter showrooms in July. Add into the mix, power alternatives to the traditional internal combustion engine - the ever-growing range of hybrid, extended range electric vehicles, plug-in electric vehicles and pure electric vehicles - and model choice now incredibly extends to approximately 8,500 different models. Taken at face value the fantastic choice available is good news for motorists as they seek a vehicle to match their wallet and lifestyle. But, according to car information experts CAP Automotive, publishers of among other titles the fabled Black Book beloved of traders to value used cars, the seemingly ever-extended choice is hitting owners where it hurts most - in the wallet. CAP’s analysis of new car model introductions over the past three decades

reveals a dramatically shorter ‘shelf-life’ for today’s new vehicles. Known in the industry as ‘lifecycle’, the period between replacement model introductions or significant ‘facelifts’ has shrunk from around 10 years in the 1970s and 80s to around three-four years today. Although motorists benefit from ever more rapid advances in car quality, new in-car gizmos and the latest engine technology resulting in lower emissions and therefore improved MPG, they pay a heavy price in increased depreciation as models go out of style quicker than they did 30 years ago. After the initial depreciation ‘hit’ that comes with the purchase of any new car, the typical inlife model ageing patterns sees residual values fall 3-4% per year. The arrival of a new model will typically add around 25% to the residual value when compared with its predecessor - an average £1,000 on a lower medium model, £1,500-£1,750 on an upper medium model and £2,000 on an executive model - relative to the degree of change. As Ford roll out its latest generation Fiesta - Britain’s best-selling car - and Volkswagen bring out the new version of its ever-popular Volkswagen Golf, the 2013 World and European Car of the Year, CAP new car expert David Saville said: “You can’t help feeling like it’s only two minutes since the previous generation was introduced in each case. “The outgoing Fiesta was produced between October 2008 and October 2012 and the previous Golf ran from November 2009 until November 2012. “Looking back into history the first generation Fiesta was introduced in 1976 and

ran until 1983. The Golf was introduced in 1974 and remained substantially unchanged until 1983.” Experts attribute some of the impetus behind shortening lifecycles to the influence of Far East manufacturers - the Japanese and Korean brands - which adopted a policy of refreshing their offerings more rapidly than the competition, as they worked hard to crack European markets. The success of that policy by the likes of Honda, Mazda, Nissan and Toyota from Japan and Hyundai and stablemate Kia from Korea prompted other manufacturers to follow suit. A second major influence on shortening lifecycles is ever tougher emissions standards, with manufacturers constantly working to meet rapidly changing European rules. Mr Saville said: “A model that had an acceptable level of CO2 emissions three years back is now totally out of step with the latest requirements.” A further influence is the ease, as a result of computers, with which the look of a car can be changed, using modern automotive design techniques compared with 30 years ago. On the face of it, concluded Mr Saville, new car consumers benefit by always having a choice of up-to-date models to choose from. However, he added: “This can also have a negative effect because most buyers have a car that they need to dispose of when they come back into the market. If their existing model isn’t the latest offering from that manufacturer, ‘lifecycle depreciation’ kicks in and makes their car less attractive as a private sale or a tradein.”

STA M FOR D PE OPLE

Robert Pontefract, Clear Ridge Vets The dog may enjoy the distinction of being ‘man’s best friend’, since it was first domesticated more than 12,000 years ago, but domestic pets in general would undoubtedly favour a vet in their in their shortlist of favourite people. Harjit Gammon met Robert Pontefract of Clear Ridge Vets, who are celebrating 25 years of ministering to the medical needs of local, and some not so local, cats, dogs and rabbits to discover what this ‘Dr Doolittle’ has to say to these animals and their owners TELL ME ABOUT CLEAR RIDGE VETERINARY SURGERY I set up the surgery in a converted bungalow in Empingham Road in 1988. I lived on site and wanted to create a place which was light and spacious and enjoyable to be in, as I knew I would be spending a lot of time in it. Hence, there are several consulting rooms, an operating theatre and a large waiting area for pets and their owners. To consolidate our time at the premises we are planning to change the front of the practice to make it more open and erecting a new sign. In August (date to be confirmed, please check our website) we are also planning to hold an Open Day/Cheese & Wine Party to celebrate our landmark anniversary and to express our gratitude to our regular customers, some of whom have been with us for 25 years. The surgery has also grown in numbers since I first set up, and now accommodates three vets including myself. Working alongside me are Sue Booth, who has been with me since graduating 8 years ago and, Daisy Jackson who qualified a year ago. I enjoy training up younger vets and learning in return from them about new and advanced techniques and practices. Vet training itself has changed somewhat over the past 25 years or so, with a shift from focusing on large (cattle, sheep, pigs and horses) and small animals (cats, dogs and rabbits) to a concentration on acquiring core knowledge prior to focusing on selective areas. As a practice we are committed to continuing professional development to keep abreast of the latest techniques and advance in veterinary medicine and frequently attend courses on subjects impacting upon the pets in our care. WHAT MAKES CLEAR RIDGE DIFFERENT FROM OTHER VETS LOCALLY? Our main focus at Clear Ridge is domestic pets; specifically cats, dogs and rabbits in the main, though once in a while we see a bird, whereas at Thurlby for example they do exotics and Oakham equine. Beyond this we have a national reputation for veterinary ophthalmology surgery, which is my specialism (Robert holds a Certificate in Veterinary Ophthalmology). As a result we get a lot of eye referrals and, as only 40 practices across the country do eye testing, we get patients from all over the country.

Aside from this I’d say we’re a good, friendly bunch (I can certainly vouch for Pauline, on reception – very friendly, helpful and outgoing), who truly do like the animals and enjoy the job of being vets. WHAT ARE YOUR PLANS FOR THE FUTURE? To keep on doing the things we do and doing them well. IF YOU WERE AN ANIMAL WHAT WOULD YOU BE? I think that our surgery cat, Stirling, who is eighteen, has had a pretty good life, and probably a life like that would be hard to beat as there is always someone to give him attention. (Albeit that he has had some closer attention from some canines (double-meaning intended!) than he may have desired.) Nevertheless, some of our clients’ dogs lead impressively happy lives. Some of these are owned by people who are retired and have more time to invest in their animals than working people. It seems the boy from the West Riding of Yorkshire, who at the age of 7 declared he wanted to be a vet (with no previous family history) not only achieved his ambition but, like the village vet who inspired him went on to become an eye specialist just like him!
