Happy Estivation
5 11
Here I am resorting to word definitions again, but I love this one, so I thought I would share it:
14 39
Estivation: 1. To spend the summer, as at a specific place or in a certain activity. 2. Zoology. To spend a hot, dry season in an inactive, dormant state, as certain reptiles, snails, insects and small mammals. I am hoping to fulfil both these definitions at various times of day with the family at St Ives in Cornwall; and I hope that you will have the chance to pursue your preferred estivations in many and varied places. But when you fancy a beach, but only have an hour or two to spare, don’t forget that there is now a beach at Sykes Lane, Rutland Water. And those who have lain and built there say it is a very fine beach!

Chef’s special What do our local chefs wear when they’re not working? Sally Stillingfleet discovered that the life of a chef is none too conventional - they don’t ‘need’ many clothes as they can change several times a day and tend to wear at best sweat pants or jeans and a T shirt. We decided to see how well they could scrub up courtesy of the sartorial ‘chef’ here - Sarah Sewell and her sous chefs - the Energy team who have simply all the best ingredients to turn scruffy chefs into something quite special! “Y
ou know what it’s like being a chef?” sighed Brian Baker – well no, I don’t actually, but it turns out these guys never have time to shop for clothes. This fashion story idea came courtesy of charming and charismatic Brian, owner of The Marquess of Exeter, who was very complimentary about a feature we did a while ago on Energy’s famous jeans. He suggested we do a feature on local chefs, as they don’t get dressed up very much and what a challenge that turned out to be! The Marquess of Exeter has become our backdrop for this photoshoot. From the veggie patch to the pigs and chickens, this pub really is all about the good life. Thank you Brian for being such a wonderful host.

Andrew usually shops in the USA and leans towards Abercrombie & Fitch and Hollister. When Paul gets the opportunity to shop he likes Next, H&M and Zara but now they have discovered the delights of shopping locally they are keen to get to know Stamford’s independent shops.

Café au Chocolat C
afé au Chocolat is a brand new concept inspired by the owner’s background, upbringing and experiences. Krystyna Szpryt, a linguist of Polish descent, has an insatiable passion for foreign travel and meeting people from diverse cultures. Café au Chocolat is intended to bring a little of the continent to Stamford, speciality coffee, eye-catching patisserie, authentic French crêpes and luxury chocolates made by French chocolatiers (Comptoir du Cacao) and also other countries, including Poland. It is on the site that was formerly Blockbusters, and has undergone a total and amazing transformation. The Café offering includes freshly ground coffee beans, locally roasted and carefully selected, and quality continental chocolates
with high cocoa content. The focus is on understanding where the product is sourced and training staff in the art of coffee making and knowledge to grow appreciation of coffee culture with customers in this part of the world. Krystyna told us: “Coffee is as varied and complex as the wine industry, in fact there are more types / flavours of coffee than wine but little is known. We are presenting the true theatre of coffee making with a brew bar specifically for single origin coffees with finer notes for the discerning customer.” You can watch your crêpes being made and prepared in front of you. The savoury ones are made from Buckwheat and are gluten free, with a choice of interesting fillings. The traditional firm favourites, the sweet crêpes

The Flower House T
he Flower House, in the site of the former Sue’s Flowers, brings a fresh, bright and modern approach to floristry. Tracy Burr, the owner, has a background working in interior design and wedding photography; and it is this eye for details and style that she is now applying to the business of flowers. She has built a team of four – herself, Nikki, Amy and Phil – and together they provide a very friendly and innovative service. The day we visited they had just prepared a Golden Wedding bouquet with gold leaves and a lot of personal touches. Tracy is especially keen to provide wedding flowers given her background; she has created a consultation area within the shop, and she is able to offer The Vera Wang Wedding Collection from Interflora. • The Flower House, 31 St Mary’s St, Stamford, PE9 2DS Tel: 01780 753225

Chalk Toy Boxes T
he lights are off, the ‘Closed’ sign is on the door and Chalk Interiors looks shut for the evening when we visit the home interiors boutique at Stamford Garden Centre. But all is not as it seems, and at the back of the shop in an area illuminated by studio lighting, manager Kate Higginson looks on with excitement as the video shoot to promote an exclusive new product range begins. The man behind the camera, Rich of Beach Media, says it’s their most complicated video to date. “I don’t often get the chance to execute my more wild ideas, but when I told Kate the idea behind this story, she said ‘go for it’. This is the first video we’ve done that incorporates stop-motion animation with live video.” The subject of the video is a beautifully crafted wooden toy box, in the shape of a 4x4 vehicle. There are more exciting designs, and videos, to follow according to Kate. “We’ve secured a deal with the creator of these toy boxes, and we can’t wait to show the other designs when they’re ready.” The boxes can be bought painted or unpainted, and as the only stockist in Stamford of Chalk Paint™ by Annie Sloan, the Chalk team can not only advise customers in choosing their own paint designs, but are authorised by Annie Sloan to run workshops which teach the various painting techniques, something that is exclusive only to Annie’s stockists. Alternatively, there are a number of pre-painted options available to customers in-store. • For more information visit www.chalkinteriors.com or call 01780 752414, or visit them at the Stamford Garden Centre. he rich aroma of tanned leather envelopes the senses from the moment one enters through the doors of one of Stamford’s oldest retail outlets. “You won’t experience that on the internet,” smiles Robinson’s of Stamford proprietor Anne Brown. “You’ve got to touch it, feel it, smell it; then you can see you are getting quality, the real thing. We’ve got a commodity, fine leather goods. That’s in our favour.” And as a former buyer for Harrods and Simpson’s of Piccadilly, Anne definitely knows her stuff. From the origins of T & C Robinson as a bespoke Lincolnshire saddlery business back in 1905, founded by her grandfather, and now celebrating 35 years at its present location at 4 St Mary’s Street, Robinson’s has become one of Stamford’s finest retailers, specialising in premium leather goods, gifts and country wear. Although the store has always carried leather goods, around 10 years ago the saddlery business began a rapid change and equestrian outfitters began to operate from more rural locations. Thus a decision was made to cut out that side of the business from the Stamford location, and rebrand in order to focus on quality

country clothing and leather goods. “Because people still thought of us as the saddlery and horsey shop, we felt we needed to let them know we’re not,” explains Becca. Most recently the shop’s façade has been revamped, with fresh signage to reflect the new name and image. T & C Robinson is now Robinson’s of Stamford. “We’re always looking to stock merchandise that’s a little bit different and that you don’t find in every other shop,” says Anne. “Items of high quality and good design which aren’t off-putting by price. Plus we vary our stock throughout the year. For example we carry a lot more ladies’ and gents’
Anne and Becca believe they serve a broad demographic and maintain a very loyal customer base due to their wide variety of products, and taking their personalised and friendly service seriously. In addition to Anne and Becca, also employed in the shop are Maria and Sue. The latter has been with the company for 12 years. Seeing familiar faces when customers come in year after year is all part of what makes the Robinson’s experience so special. The choice location also adds a little more magic, believes Anne. “St Mary’s street has changed very little in the last 70 years. You

can’t say that for many central shopping districts, with such a great selection of independent shops.” Although the saddlery and equestrian side continues as T & C Robinson in Billinghay near Lincoln, the Stamford outlet is now forging a fresh and distinct reputation for itself as one of the town’s finest retailers, offering service that goes above and beyond the usual. And judging by the comment overheard by this writer from a potential customer to her companion about to enter Robinson’s – “This is the shop with the lovely leather handbags” – we’d say they are doing an exceptional job.

STAMFORD’S NEW FOOTBALL GROUND Antonia Scott gets a tour of the impressive work going on at Stamford’s new Football Stadium
W
ith World Cup fever fast fading, Stamford residents can soon look forward to the opening of a brand new football stadium and state of the art sports facilities in September. Funded by the Burghley Estate and New College Stamford, this ambitious project will have taken shape in just 11 months from start to finish. David Pennell, Estate Director at Burghley, conducted my tour with Dean Hall, Senior Contracts Manager at R.G. Carter, a Norfolkbased company that won the £5.9m building contract and set themselves the task of completing the project in just 47 weeks! David Pennell explained that the site was originally all undulating Burghley farmland and so 180,000 tonnes of spoil has been moved and trenches have had to be hand dug to avoid damaging any potential archaeological finds. Great care has been taken to maintain the surrounding original landscape by sowing a wild flower meadow to the north of the pitch which will create an ‘acoustic bund’ that screens for noise to local residents. The pitch has already been sown
“I am continually amazed at the progress on this project and the speed with which it has been delivered. I cannot wait for everyone in Stamford to start using and enjoying the sports complex.” David Pennell, Estate Director, Burghley with high quality seed which only took three days to germinate and is being lovingly watered throughout the summer to ensure green carpet perfection for its first autumn fixtures. The stadium is graded as a Category C ground with high spec floodlights and the capacity for 2,500 seated fans which has been future proofed for the potential advance up the league. ALL WEATHER GAMES PITCH Behind the main football pitch is one enormous AWGP (all weather games pitch) that can
also be split into three pitches for community use – ideal for football leagues, children’s sporting camps, personal training or Boot camp sessions. The pitches are open until 10pm and have already seen great interest by the local community. To their right are four more community pitches for children to start their football sporting careers on – from the U7s upwards; and they are overlooked by a spectacular viewing area for parents to keep an eye on their protégés whilst also enjoying a snack from the downstairs ‘Daniel’s Larder’ serving foodie favourites. SPORTS CENTRE The Borderville Sports Centre sits centrally on site and overlooks the community pitches and main football arena. Constructed largely from limestone brick to connect with Burghley Estate’s classic look, inside is a modern, highly energy efficient building with underfloor heating and anti-glare glass. The ground floor gymnasium has a beautiful beech sprung
“I am delighted that the unique partnership of a Further Education college, local football club and prestigious stately home have combined to provide a fantastic education, football and community facility for the people of Stamford and beyond. This incredible resource will make major difference to the quality of life of local people.” Andrew Patience, Principal (retiring), New College Stamford 20

Q&A WITH DAVID PENNELL, ESTATE DIRECTOR AT BURGHLEY floor (and vivid turquoise walls!) for numerous sporting purposes including – badminton, netball, volleyball, basketball, futsal and roller derby. New College Stamford received funding for this project from the Skills Funding Agency so that their 2,500 students can use the facilities, not just for teaching and learning, but also for when large numbers of pupils need to sit exams. The ceiling is perforated to capture sound so that it doesn’t reverberate, making it ideal for exam conditions. Also downstairs is a Sports Injury Clinic for teaching 16-18 year old students which will also be used on match days in an emergency. The ‘Home’ and ‘Away’ changing rooms are spacious and there are additional separate Referees and Officials’ changing rooms. I had my first (and no doubt last!) wander into the shower rooms to watch workmen on mechanical stilts install miles of cables! The community changing rooms are colour coded to ease identification for children – Red, Yellow, Green and Blue, along with space for numerous lockers. Upstairs are two classrooms and one function room which can also be opened up
to create a single large room for corporate hospitality overlooking the impressive main pitch. There’s an interactive white board and projector and the all important bar serving local beer from the Grain Store in Oakham and bistro area, which overlooks the gymnasium, for refreshments. The first floor terrace overlooks the four different community pitches for a perfect bird’s eye view on match day. The final stages of a new right-hand turn lane are being installed on Ryhall Road to ensure traffic safety to the site and New College Stamford is working towards a new bus route which will drop students off and use a turning circle to exit. A 2m wide safe cycle route is also being created from New College Stamford’s Drift Road site for students to use. As I left the new Stamford Daniels Football Stadium I was hugely impressed with the mammoth project undertaken and the speed at which such a unique sporting facility has been created for Stamford’s community. Perhaps next year, the Sunday Times can add Stamford to their list of not just the ‘Best Place to Live’ in the UK, but also ‘the fittest!’

Window Repair
Why replace your timber windows when you can restore? Traditional Restoration offers a cost-saving alternative to window replacement.
• Repairs and renovations • Overhaul and draught proofing • Reglazing and reputtying • Converting single glazing to double glazing
How much was the Grant you received for this project? In total, we received a £2m grant from the Football Association, Football Foundation and Skills Funding Agency. The remaining cost was split between Burghley Estate and New College Stamford. How many hours has the construction taken so far? 50,000 man hours already with another 8,000 more to go. How many parking spaces will there be? There will be parking capacity for 120 cars and room for another 80 in an overflow area. Who will open the stadium? We are not quite sure yet, as we are awaiting confirmation on a high profile invite! When will the first match take place? A fixture list is yet to be confirmed but we are aiming for 1st September. What will happen to the old Stadium? It will be knocked down and be replaced with 50 high spec well-built houses.

TOWN & COUNTRY WALKS
Lincoln: Uphill & Downhill Lincoln is a city that we all know is there but few of us visit. This walk, by Nicholas Rudd-Jones, will give you a fabulous outlook on a great city and probably want to make you come back more often WALK DATA Distance: 6 miles Typical time: 2.5 hours Map: Explorer 272 Start & Finish: Brayford Pool Terrain: a fairly strenuous ascent to the ‘uphill’ bit of the walk; otherwise, straightforward

Brayford Pool is a natural lake formed from a widening of the River Witham. It was used as a port by the Romans - who connected it to the River Trent by constructing the Foss Dyke - and has a long industrial heritage. The Pool has been the focus of Lincoln’s urban regeneration since the early 1990s. It is now overlooked by the University of Lincoln on the south side; and bars, restaurants and a cinema on the north side.
Lincoln Cathedral is nearly a thousand years old, and was reputedly the tallest building in the world for 238 years (1311–1549). John Ruskin declared: “I have always held... that the cathedral of Lincoln is out and out the most precious piece of architecture in the British Isles and roughly speaking worth any two other cathedrals we have.” Lincoln Castle also dates back to the 11th century.
West Common has been an open space since Roman times, when it was thought to be an area of agricultural production for the military. A race track was built there in 1773 and closed in 1964. The grandstand, the stables and the
THE CONTEXT Lincoln is situated in a gap in the Lincoln Cliff, a major escarpment through which The River Witham flows. Lincoln is thus divided into two zones, known locally as ‘uphill’ and ‘downhill’. The uphill area includes the historical quarter, including Lincoln Cathedral, Lincoln Castle and the Medieval Bishop’s Palace. It also includes residential suburbs to the north and northeast. The downhill area comprises the city centre and the suburbs to the south and south-west. The aptly named street ‘Steep Hill’ connects the two (although it is too steep for vehicular traffic, which must take a more roundabout route). This divide marks out Lincoln from other historic cities in England and elsewhere in Europe. Whereas in most such cities, the chief historical buildings (cathedrals and castles) tend to be centrally located and intermingled with the present-day city centre, in Lincoln they are separate. It is easy to see why the Romans were attracted to Lincoln. The gap through the Lincoln Cliff offered a natural east west route-way either by water or on foot. Roman engineers also saw the possibility of linking the River Witham to the River Trent by building a canal. That canal, called the Foss Dyke, is still in use today, and through the ages, the links to Yorkshire and the Midlands via the Foss Dyke have brought trade and prosperity to the city. Even after the Romans abandoned Britain in the early 5th century, the importance of the port remained and the great and prosperous medieval city of Lincoln was built on the wealth (mostly in wool) that traded up and down the River Witham.

The Lincoln Arboretum was designed and laid out between 1870 and 1872 by the celebrated Victorian gardener Edward Milner, following the national trend of providing public parks for workers to relax in. A bandstand was added to the site in 1884, and during the 1890s the arboretum attracted over 40,000 people to concerts. After much neglect in the second half of the twentieth century, a major restoration project was undertaken a decade ago, and the park you see today gives enormous pleasure, with its beautiful gardens, lakes and bridges, children’s maze, two fountain features, Victorian bandstand and tea room/café. PIT STOPS Brayford Pool has many chains to choose from, but the more characterful eateries and cafés are to be found in Bailgate, close to the cathedral. The Ice Cream Parlour, 3 Bailgate is recommended, for, amongst other things, ‘its weird and wonderful flavours’. The White Hart Hotel, Bailgate, a 14th century coaching inn, has an outside terrace on an upper floor that affords great views of the cathedral. There is also a quaint café set in the cloisters of the Cathedral called the Refectory. If you’re into tapas/nibbles, then we recommend Ole Ole, 33 Bailgate www.oleolelincoln.co.uk. A typical Trip Advisor review: “We have been several times now and every time it has been excellent. It is lovely to sit and enjoy tapas and sangria in the garden on a warm day. The lunch time special of £15 for 2 people is fantastic value, even available on a weekend.” STAMFORD LIVING AUGUST 2014

LOCAL BUSINESS ENTREPRENEURS
Attitude is contagious... Antonia Scott, Marketing Manager at Right-click speaks to local entrepreneurs, to find out why their attitude is worth catching
Dan Black Managing Director Black + Blum
of every job.” Dan has a clear vision of where he wants the company to be in 3-5 years time and uses this passion to engage with his team and share the vision for what the future could hold for everyone. Dan fuels his team’s motivation by communicating how cool the new designs they are working on are and how they could stand out from the competition on the market. “Every six months, I present a 3 year vision to the company, which sets out what steps need to be taken in order to get to the end goal. This makes the vision very tangible and allows everyone to contribute to what is needed to get there.”
www.black-blum.com How it all began... After leaving Uppingham School in Rutland, Dan gained a First Class Honours degree in Industrial Design from Northumbria University – famous alumnae include Jonathan Ive, now Head of Design at Apple. On graduating, Dan worked for various design companies before deciding in 1998 to make the leap to go it alone with fellow Design student, Martin Blum. They founded black+blum from small offices in London and for the first two years designed products for other companies. In 2000, they decided to design, source and sell their own range of lighting to retail shops and then expanded into all areas of homewares. Over the last 14 years, black + blum have brought nearly 60 different designs to the market, won over 25 international design awards and had their work featured in numerous publications. Their products are stocked in John Lewis and Conran Store in the UK, and MoMA NY and Wholefoods in the US. Black + blum now sell products in over thirty countries and 75% of their annual sales come from outside the UK. Dan lives in Apethorpe, with his wife, 3 children and 2 dogs and in January made the decision to buy his partner Martin Blum out from the business.
Inspiration, Motivation, Vision and Drive.... “I admire many key business personalities – including the obvious Steve Jobs and Richard Branson, but I am interested in anyone that has the guts, determination and vision to enter an existing market and shine above the competition by offering something better. Attention to creativity and detail inspires me, especially when you see how clearly it can change the perception and success of a company by allowing customers to see you care and making you stand out from your competition. E.g. Apple, Land Rover, Jo Malone, Jimmy Choo - all of these brands are very different, but in their own fields, they stand out from the competition because they are better through attention to design.” Dan’s motivation comes from a desire to

Passion, belief and mantras!
“Attention to creativity and detail inspires me, especially when you see how clearly it can change the perception and success of a company by allowing customers to see you care and making you stand out from your competition.” establish his brand on an international level amongst the design community, “If I can establish it amongst the design community, then I think the public awareness will naturally follow afterwards. I want to create design classics of the future - products, which could be sold in a second-hand design store in thirty years time, as an antique of the future.” Dan motivates his team by making it ‘feel’ like a team. “We do all the obvious things, like cake on people’s birthdays, drinks after work if targets are met and we have just introduced a ‘profit pot’ which is like a dividend for the whole company, if annual sales targets are met. However, I think the key thing is giving each person responsibility for their own role. We are a small company, and everyone needs to understand how crucial they are in every aspect
“I am inherently passionate about design and love solving creative challenges. The chance to innovate in a stale, competitive market is a good driving force.” Dan states that his father had a strong work ethic which he clearly passed on to each of his four sons who all run their own companies. He advised them to start their own companies early on, as all businesses fail at some point and the earlier you learn to deal with the hard times, the easier it is to pick yourself up and re-adjust your path. As Managing Director of his company, Dan has ensured that everyone is responsible for their own area which gives him the maximum amount of time to work on what he does best – design more products. Looking ahead Dan says it’s going to be a busy year, “Traditionally we have only designed between 3-5 new designs a year; however, over the next twelve months, we plan to launch over 70!” Dan’s vision on a design level is to create designs which are underpinned by function. “They have to look good, but if they don’t function, then they have a limited life span and value.”

We specialise in locating and naturally correcting imbalances in the nerve system and body chemistry which are blocking your ability to achieve optimal physical and mental performance.
Our methods of correction are twofold.
We re-balance the nerve system by performing special “chiropractic adjustments” using the Activator Method. These corrections are very gentle and totally safe, making this type of care suitable for the whole family. We then look to re-balance body chemistry by educating our patients on changing their lifestyle habits. This is a wide ranging, tailor-made programme for each individual depending upon their needs and goals.
When our bodies work in balance, not only does our health improve significantly but we may also start to notice a whole range of other benefits, such as: • Improved posture • Relief from musculoskeletal aches and pains • Feeling more alert and less tired • Improved mood

FOOD & DRINK
Welcome to the world of campsite operators
Introducing The New Lodge Farm Caravan and Campsite. Sarah Lyon reports
L
ocal producers Sarah and Simon Singlehurst started the idea 13 years ago of selling their lamb, beef and pork on the Farmer’s markets and direct from the farm; meat that is guaranteed antibiotic and hormone free, because their belief is in the concept of eating high quality, locally produced seasonal food, which has low food miles. “So many of our customers rely on us to bring the meat to their towns and markets, and although some of the markets have had problems in a similar way to the High Streets that they are situated in, the markets are still a social hub of the town where we are always genuinely pleased to catch up with our customers every month and share news just as friends,” said Sarah. And Simon adds, “This is the philosophy of our farm.” It was after a conversation with one such customer, Robert Louden MBE, Director General of the Camping and Caravanning Club, that Simon began to develop the idea of turning five acres of farm land into an ‘adult only campsite’. Three years on from that initial conversation, Sarah and Simon, along with an expert team, have opened the gates to The New Lodge Farm Caravan and Campsite. The site offers great security, beautiful views, comfort and an opportunity to relax in this tranquil environment. The Singlehursts have taken what once was an old Victorian milking parlour and converted it to a very modern shower, kitchen (veg prep area and microwave) and laundry facility. Sensitive to retaining its character and charm throughout, they have kept the old beams as part of the new design. “The KWB Bio-Mass boiler, supplied by Orangehouse Renewables of Uffington, is a star trek sort of thing,” says Simon. “The fully automated system burns repelleted waste sawdust from the local timber industry, reducing the site’s carbon foot print while providing consistently warm buildings and lots of hot water at peak time.” Simon wanted to future-proof the site for caravanning for the next twenty years with 52 fully serviced ‘super pitches’ (electrics, water and drainage); a combination of grass and hard standing, all enjoying a 360 degree view over the Singlehurst’s farm and the rolling Northamptonshire landscape. An area adjacent to the super pitches gives space for 20 generous grass pitches for tent campers,
32
all with electric hook-ups. Landtech Ltd based in Oundle created roadways using stone from what had been a disused quarry in the next door field to the farm. “Considering that we built the facility during the wettest winter ever on record, the skill our team of experts gave the project resulted in creating an outstanding build,” acknowledges Simon. There is also a pond a short stroll away, with an all fenced and secure area with cut walks amongst long grass and wild flowers, providing two acres for walking dogs. There is an option to eat in the farm shop café or buy a few steaks and cook them oneself. The farm shop café provides soft comfortable sofas and leather arm chairs to relax in as you enjoy a drink and some home cooked food. Aside from this the farm shop provides camping and caravan essentials and much more. Locally produced Belvoir cordials, cakes and meringues, marmalades and jams stock the shelves while the farm’s own meat can be bought from chilled cabinets. Cheeses from Lincolnshire Poacher, Wobbly Bottom (goat’s cheese) and Colston Bassett Stilton give a regional flavour. Locally produced Farringdon Honey and Mustard vinaigrette perfect for dressing salads; crisps and cakes for nibbles and desserts. Farm diversification is important to the local economy and it is initiatives such as The New Lodge Farm Caravan and Campsite that play a vital role in supporting and creating a healthy rural economy whilst becoming a great asset to the area, supporting local activities. • Simon and Sarah Singlehurst, New Lodge Farm, Bulwick, Rockingham Forest, Northamptonshire NN17 3DU Contact: 01780 450493, www.newlodgefarm.com Farm shop opening times: 8:30am – 4:30pm Saturday and 10:00 am to 4:30pm Sunday Bulwick village pub is close by Wi Fi: hot spots in Café Site open: April 3, 2014 and runs until October 31st, 2014 Pitch costs: £21.50/night Monday to Thursday, £25.00/night Friday to Sunday Tent pitches: £18.00/night with electric hook up, £15.00/night without Photographs: Jane Berridge – janeberridge2@hotmail.co.uk

EATING OUT
SixBells, Witham: Ringing the changes An idyllic Lincolnshire village without a pub is like tonic without the gin – thankfully, with the re-opening of the Six Bells, Witham on the Hill has a pub again. Ben Miller and Genevieve Potter went along to try it out
W
hat a transformation! Where before the Six Bells was dark and dingy, it is now light, charming, and as welcoming as the flowers in spring. Owners Jim and Sharon – whose impressive track record includes the excellent Beehive pub in Peterborough and the reliably brilliant Jim’s Yard in Stamford – have poured untold time, money and love into the Six Bells’ refurbishment. Much more than a lick of paint, the project ran over schedule as the couple dug deep to deliver the restoration the fine old building deserved. On arrival you’re stuck by the pub’s impressive frontage – it really is a handsome place. Its layout means the building also hugs the outside seating area at the front on three sides, giving shelter on fine but breezy summer evenings. Step inside and the vibe is immediately welcoming; smart and efficient but relaxing and with enough of the building’s past retained to give a pleasing sense of history and continuity – the snug area to the side of the bar, and the bar itself, have been retained from the pub’s previous life. After a drink at the bar (real ale lovers will be delighted to learn that the excellent Star brewery currently has two of its brews on offer, Meteor and Astral), we were shown through to our table. By now, thanks to the amazing smells coming from the wood-fired pizza oven at the other end of the pub, we were ravenously hungry. Fortunately help was at hand in the form of the delicious bread selection, with all the offerings baked inhouse in the pizza oven. Appetites momentarily sated, it was on to the serious business of making our choices from the menu, and shortly afterwards our starters arrived. Presentation is evidently one of the chef’s great strengths – all the dishes looked fantastic, from the shimmering freshness of the Portland crab dressed with chilli, lemon and dill to the creamy contrasts of my mozzarella with purple fig, Parma ham and watercress. The
34
starters tasted as good as they looked too, impressing with that age-old combination of ultra-fresh ingredients expertly and sympathetically prepared. With another round of drinks and a pause to admire the restaurant’s quirky and eye-catching cutlery, it was on to the main event. The main course menu has something for everyone, from light and zesty fish dishes to hearty steaks and roast lamb. Between the four us we tried the steak with chips, mushrooms, onion rings and tomato, the sea bream with mash and sea asparagus, the rump of lamb with borlotti beans and the seared squid and tempura prawns with courgette and watermelon. All four were excellent, particularly the delicately delicious sea bream and the perfectly roasted lamb, which ate beautifully with the hearty beans, wilted spinach and salsa rosa. But if you’re really hungry don’t beat around the bush: Andy and his healthy appetite plumped for the steak and were so happy together we barely got a word out of him for half an hour. Sadly, all three of us were too full for dessert but, in the name of professional journalism, I took one for the team and selflessly ordered the affogato with ice cream and crushed amaretto biscuits – manna from heaven for a man whose coffee obsession is all-consuming. In summary then, a fantastic meal and an equally great venue. Eating at the Six Bells needn’t be a sit-down affair in the evening either – the pub also offers breakfast (choose from continental croissants and muffins or a full English), lunches and the aforementioned pizza (eat in or take away). And for those keen to sample the ales and the fine wine list, there’s no need to hold back on account of the car either – upstairs the pub boasts three beautifully decorated rooms, the star of which is an artful conversion of the old hayloft complete with high ceilings and generous proportions. Go on, treat yourselves. • Six Bells, Witham on the Hill, PE10 0JH Tel: 01778 590360

LOCAL ARTISTS
Angela Harding –
Painter and Printmaker
Jean Orpin and Sue Lee visited Angela Harding in Wing, Rutland to see her working in her studio.
A
ngela began her career by taking a degree in Fine Arts at Leicester Polytechnic. On completion of her studies she travelled, cycling round Britain initially and then doing Voluntary Service Overseas in Bangladesh and subsequently travelling in India and Nepal. On her return she spent some time teaching and first came to Rutland as Artist-in-Residence at Uppingham School from 1988 to1990. The school provided her with accommodation and she taught part time, also setting up a printing workshop there. The press is still in use. She studied for her M.A. at Nottingham and has also worked as a part time lecturer at a number of Higher Education Colleges. She admires the work of Eric Ravilious, Edward Bawden and Clare Leighton and has specialised in print making since her college days. Starting with an original drawing she uses tools to make different textures and build up an image on vinyl. The printing process requires accuracy and patience. For some time she was Director of the Leicester Print workshop, a regional print-making centre. Painting is more spontaneous and many are of the birds she sees in her garden or on visits to Norfolk. She has always lived in the country and her studio overlooks the Rutland countryside where she sees fields, hedgerows and wildlife such
as hares, foxes, red kites and other birds. The subjects for her pictures are often these things she sees from her studio or that she encounters on her walks with her dogs. Angela’s two dogs, Syd and Ami, also appear in some of her pictures. In most of her paintings she uses the same palette of soft colours: greens, blues and greys with reds and stronger colours for autumn. She is now self-employed and although it requires dedication and she does work seven days a week (even on days out to Norfolk), she has shown that it is possible to use her creative skills to be successful in business. She has provided illustrations for Gardens Illustrated and BBC Country File magazine and has featured in Country Living magazine. Images are also published by Art Angel Publishing and Cannes Down Press as greeting cards. A new addition produced by Angela are attractive tea towels. There is an opportunity to see Angela Harding’s art in Stamford this month as she is exhibiting her work at Rob Fogell’s gallery in High Street St Martin’s from August 16th until September 6th. You can also visit her website at www.angelaharding.co.uk.

UPDATES
Hunters Lifestyle H
unters Lifestyle has re-branded itself from Hunters Interiors to be more in tune with modern trends. Georgie Teesdale who together with Candy Smith runs the business, explained; “Some people still feel we might come in and turn their house upside down with a new design. Whilst we welcome a full house project, we are by no means just about that. We are about helping you enhance your everyday lifestyle through judicious change and addition; we like to work with what you have. The new name communicates that we are more modern and accessible.” To celebrate their new-found creative freedom, they recently run a superb art show over two days, which showcased local talent. What came across in speaking to each of the artists is their ever continuing wish to experiment, to push boundaries, to explore new possibilities, to become more natural in their style. Thus Jane Hindmarch is now painting with her fingers to create a more immediate, direct and naïve effect; Gillian Durno creates vibrant still lifes without the constraint of perspective; Catherine Headley paints fresh,
vibrant abstracts that could transform any room; Belinda Mannings envisions fish with an exquisite flourish; Tricia Stocker works from a textile background to create highly distinctive pictures. This spirit of adventure is what
The Stamford Eye Clinic comes to town F
ancy something fresh, new and modern in the world of eye clinics? But still want to be sure that it is underpinned by good technology and great experience. Well, the Stamford Eye Clinic could be just the answer for you. Launched by Malvinder Hanspal FBDO, who has many years of experience in the corporate sector of the industry, he felt that the time was ripe to set up on his own and offer something new and distinctive. He chose Stamford because he felt it was exactly the right place for his stylish and personal offering. “Our focus,” he told SL, “is on clinical testing, excellent customer service, informed choice and a great range of glasses. You will be looked after by the same person from the start to finish of the process, and you will never be rushed.” The substantial technology that Malvinder has invested in includes an Advanced Digital Imaging machine that provides a top quality 3D scan of the retina and associated structures, ensuring the early detection and management of any issues - for example, the early detection of glaucoma. The range of glasses available is really impressive. Since Malvinder is not constrained by any corporate policies, he has been able to select ranges based on his own sense of style and the needs of all different age groups and sexes. The result is a fabulous array of brands, including Bellinger, Garrett Leight, Tom Ford, Lindberg, Bevel and Maui Jim. Lens choices include leading brands Zeiss and Essilor. There are very competitively priced ranges available as well as designer ranges. • The Stamford Eye Clinic, 32 St Peter’s Street, Stamford, PE9 2PF Tel: 01780 767403www.thestamfordeyeclinic.co.uk
The Advanced Skin Clinic T
he Advanced Skin Clinic offers a wide range of beauty treatments as well as aesthetic treatments. Now offering MPL® (Multi Pulsed Light) treatments, they can resolve skin issues such as Acne, Pigmentation, Thread Veins, and Hair Removal. What is the difference between MPL® and electrolysis? Electrolysis treats each hair follicle individually with a needle, which can cause scarring. Electrolysis takes a long time to treat an area, and it can become uncomfortable for the client. MPL® is more comfortable, pain free and more effective than electrolysis. Their state of the art skin rejuvenation technology uses the most stable radio frequency sine waves to ensure comfortable, result-driven treatments, for all ages and skin types with both early stage and long term results. You can be treated on your face or body, this treatment will restore your elasticity, tighten and lift the whole face, and will bring back life to sallow and dull complexions as well as eradicating lines and wrinkles with results immediately, lasting up to 18months. • To be eligible for Free Consultation and 10% off your first treatment please call 01780 481155. A current Peterborough volunteer says: “For me the key sign that Peterborough CAB is a good organisation is that the difference between paid members of staff and volunteers is blurred. I’m a naturally inquisitive person and this is one role where nobody stops you learning more. As social laws continually change, I’m confident we will not run out of new things to learn.” No one knows when they might have a problem they can’t sort out. That’s why CAB plans to be here for your children, family and friends, colleagues and employees. As an independent local charity, they can’t survive without your help, so please think about supporting then with your time, with resources or in kind, in any way you can. • Peterborough Citizens Advice Bureau, 01733 887922, atpadmin@peterboroughcab.org.uk

r Thomas jested humorously that he’d meet me in a corner of Scotgate car park, with a rose in his hair so that I might recognise him. Rather apt really for a group defined in the common imagination with symbols and secrecy. In the event he thought better of the rose, but was outside a white door, tucked deep into a corner of the car park. The Masonic Centre, he informed me, as he ushered me in is “Probably the best kept secret in Stamford”. The theme of secrecy was clearly uppermost in both our minds. In an earlier conversation, in which I had expressed an interest in writing about the Masons, he had quickly commented on the desire to dispel the myth of secrecy which shrouds freemasonry. And, as I was keen to uncover the reasons for the same, we were both united in our thinking. As I had commented that despite often walking past the Masonic Centre along the St Peter’s Street facade but having never ventured in, he embarked on a tour and history of the building. Originally it was the Bluecoat School, one time alma mater of Stamfordian and internationally renowned conductor, organist and composer Sir Malcolm Sargent. The derelict building was acquired in the 1960s by a group of masons to hold meetings, as the rooms at The Stamford Hotel, where they had previously met had been requisitioned by the War Office. The old school with its hall and numerous classrooms proved ideal for accommodating a large meeting chamber and separate room (the old school hall) for dining afterwards. The original school bell now hangs in the dining hall. The building has also recently been licensed to hold weddings and receptions, and has a bar, kitchen and dance floor.
On 24 June 1717 four London lodges met at the Goose and Gridiron tavern in St Paul’s Churchyard, declared themselves a Grand Lodge and elected a Grand Master. This was the first Grand Lodge in the world and will be 300 years in three years time.
The Foundations of Freemasonry
Personal recommendation remains the principal path to becoming a freemason, though younger members may learn of it from the internet and then approach a lodge. Thereafter follows an interview, in much the same way as clubs such as Rotary or the Round Table. Lodges remain male enclaves, though women’s freemasonry, run along the same lines as the male equivalent, is growing. Stamford has seven lodges, the oldest of which The Lodge of Merit was established in 1846. Others represent the special interests of the members; Pro Musica-related to people with an interest in music; The Burghley Lodge-Round Table Members, Terpsichore-ballroom dancing and so forth. Showing Master’s chair in the east, Senior Warden’s in the west and Junior Warden’s in the south with chequered pavement and lodge banners behind.
“The origin of Freemasonry is probably lost in antiquity, Dr Thomas tells me, “but the recognised origins today are from stonemasons”. Groups of stonemasons worked on the great cathedrals; Exeter, Gloucester, Peterborough and Durham, and were organised into groups known as lodges. Within each group individuals had different skills ranging from trader masons (the lowest skilled, cutting chunks of stone) to master masons. Each was paid according to his skill, but quarry workers for example were not literate, so individuals developed their own mark/ sign, which identified them for payment. Each lodge moved from town to town, however as lodges settled in a town their conviviality and fraternity attracted others, speculative masons or men involved in other trades. The first recorded non-working stonemason in England was Elias Ashmole in 1646.
46
What is Freemasonry? “The essence of freemasonry is that it is a fraternity. Not exclusive, other than a belief in a divine creator - your god by whatever name you choose to call him; Christian, Jew, Sikh, Muslim... There are no discussions of a political or religious content. In here all are equal. There is no disharmony. We take a good man and make him better by taking part in a series of Masonic rituals and playlets on morality, behaviour, understanding of people’s strengths and weaknesses. This allows you to develop as a person. You have to perform in front of the brethren, which gives confidence. Freemasonry is a force for good in any community. Every year £20million is donated by freemasons to charitable causes, from within the organisation. We don’t go to the public to raise funds”. The money raised is donated to a diverse range of causes, including £27,000 recently to Peterborough City Hospital to complete an appeal for a cancer scanner. In addition every year £500,000 is given to an adult hospice and £100,000 to a children’s hospice. Other donations have been made to the Red Cross tsunami appeal, the Philippines typhoon appeal, Somerset floods fund, riding for the Disabled, College for the Blind, Papworth and £1million each to prostrate and ovarian cancer research.
