Many Stamfordians will be going down and watching the events, and there are many who have volunteered as ‘Games Makers’ who will be helping out with various aspects of the running of the Games. In this issue we celebrate health & well being; and if the Olympics encourages us to do anything, hopefully it will be to take more exercise. I’m not sure if it has ever been proven properly, but one hardly needs proof – the fitter you are the more you can relish life’s everyday challenges. Fit in body, fit in mind! So here’s to going to the gym, that little bit more walking, swimming or running more, letting your dog drag you that little bit further along its favourite route, taking up a team sport, whatever tickles your fancy.

Food at the 2012 Games Best of British With 14 million meals being served over 77 days the job of catering for the athletes, 22,000 broadcasters, technical officials, corporate sponsors and a myriad of spectators has become the most fascinating aspect of the Games for caterer and food writer Sarah Lyon

arah was sponsored by Rick Stein to the Guild of Food Writers, the professional association of food writers, authors, journalists and broadcasters in the UK, in 2006. As a member of the Guild of Food Writers Sarah is regularly invited to fascinating food workshops and events, the most recent of which was the Feeding the Millions: Food at the 2012 Games, at Imperial College London. Guest speakers Jan Matthews and Jeni Pearce delivered a spectacularly thought-provoking talk.

Jan Matthews This will be the first Olympic Games ever with a food policy and it is Jan Matthews, Head of Catering, Cleaning and Waste for LOCOG who is spearheading the Olympic food vision. “This will be the biggest and most complex peacetime catering operation in the world,” says Jan. The 2012 London Games will be a tastier, healthier, greener games celebrating the great diversity and quality of British food delivered at affordable prices. Every menu has been tasted and every dish priced. MacDonald’s, a company that Jan has huge respect for, are a corporate sponsor of the games, and committed to sourcing British

chicken (Red Tractor standard). They will provide only 10% of the food to spectators with British producers supplying much of the rest. Local producers were invited to a ‘meet the buyers day’, where contractors did a blind tasting. One of these unbranded success stories is cupcake makers Frost & Snow, based in Birmingham. Contractors were impressed by their product and story where homeless people have been given a chance at employment in an effort to turn their lives around. Jan went on to say, “I know people are at the Games for the sport but actually what we want them to say is that the curry we had was great too!” Food served right across the games is going to be healthy and inviting. Jan’s food vision has become a reality where the link between food and sport will become a lasting legacy of the Games.

Feeding the athletes Our second speaker was Guild member Jeni Pearce, Head of Performance Nutrition for the English Institute of Sport and Catering Advisor to the BOA. A chef, dietician, nutritionist and teacher, Jeni along with 15 other nutritionists, has the great responsibility of fine-tuning the athletes. “We are feeding the ‘elite athlete’,” says Jeni. “We take it strongly as a science. Of all the sciences, nutrition may have more to offer the athlete than any other as it is clear that a poor diet will prevent the athlete from achieving their

potential.” She went on to say, “The athletes are human machines. One kilo can make a crucial difference to performance results.” Nutrients play a big role in the diet of the 2012 Olympian making the relationship between Jeni and the Camp GB chefs a critically important one. Jeni explained that the athletes’ menus are trying to take advantage of the latest science as it relates to diet, where antioxidants (lots of vegetables), black current powders, Vitamin C, Omega 3 and plenty of hydration are essentials. The Team GB holding camp is in Jeni Pearce Loughborough. Here, Jeni will have helped many first time Olympians adjust to the environment of being in the camp where she and the other nutritionists oversee the individual diets of every athlete. Jeni is hopeful that this commitment to nutrition, food and food hygiene will have a knock-on effect for the general public. She and seven other scientists, dieticians and nutritionists have written an 80 page booklet, A Guide to Nutrition and Hydration for Active Healthy Lifestyles, which for her will be a lasting legacy of the Games. The booklet aims to get people thinking more about the food they eat and how eating healthily fine tunes the body. s Olivia Newton John’s song ‘Let’s get physical’ came on the radio on the way to my ‘Sporty photo-shoot’, I thought it was a good omen as I could not have been feeling less in the mood for sporty stuff - the rain had set in, Olympic sized raindrops were falling. Our spirits were not dampened though, due to the excellent location of Oakham Tennis Club and their two willing tennis coaches (my male models Ralph and Dan). Rob Dulieu advised us on choosing the right gear to enhance performance and still look good (the most important part!) “When it comes to clothes you exercise in, comfort is vital. Whatever you wear the clothing needs to wick away moisture; choose performance clothing which allows the body to breathe when performing activities. Go for clothing that dries quickly, holds its shape and feels great to wear. Always seek out a local sports performance shop. “When exercising in hot weather or indoors you need lightweight outfits. Select tops that fit well but allow you freedom of movement. For cold weather workouts wear clothes that insulate the body yet still wick moisture from it. Dress in layers so that you can peel them off as you warm up. Purchase an insulating fleece jacket or vest as the outermost layer to keep your torso warm. “Nothing is more important than the shoes your wear, poor footwear can cause biomechanical issues. I would always advise that you buy from a reputable local retailer who can put you through a gait analysis test to determine which shoes suit you best for the type of exercise you wish to perform. Regular exercise will wear down the soles and thus it is advisable to replace your trainers on a regular basis (every 400 -500 miles or so!)”

Home grown Olympians As the Olympic Games begins, Dave Phillips looks at famous local Olympics heroes, past and present

But four years later he won Gold in the 400m hurdles at the 1928 Amsterdam Olympics, followed by Silver in the 4x400m relay at the 1932 Los Angeles Games, where he was also fourth in the 400m hurdles and fifth in the 110m hurdles. In the British Empire Games in 1930 (forerunner of the modern Commonwealth Games), he won Gold medals in the 120 yards hurdles, the 440 yards hurdles and the 4x440 yards relay. Educated at Eton and Magdalene College, Cambridge, legend has it that Burghley placed a matchbox on the hurdles when he was practicing, aiming to knock the boxes over with his leading foot without disturbing the hurdles. In 1927, he sprinted around the Great Court at Trinity College in the time it took the college clock to David Burghley toll 12 o’clock – inspiring the scene in the

Sir Peter Scott (1909-89), the son of Captain Scott of the Antarctic, was educated at Oundle School. He was best known as an artist and conservationist and was founder of the World Wildlife Fund, but he was also a successful sportsman. He represented Great Britain and Northern Ireland at sailing in the 1936 Berlin Olympics, winning a Bronze medal. In his later life he spent many years living in an old lighthouse near the mouth of the River Nene, at Sutton Bridge. Another famous Oundle School sportsman was Sir Harry Morton Llewellyn (1911-99), who in 1952 won a Gold medal in show jumping at the Helsinki Olympic Games for the British equestrian team, riding his favourite horse, Foxhunter. But one of our best-known local athletes was shot putter Geoff Capes, who with 27 international caps is the most-capped British male athlete of all time. Born in Holbeach, in 1949, throughout the 1970s he was a policeman, based in Peterborough. The seventh of nine children, Capes represented Lincolnshire at basketball, football and cross-country. But he was best known as a shot putter, who won two Commonwealth Games and two European Championships. In 1972, aged 21, he competed in the Munich Olympics and did not make it past the qualifying round, but he went to the 1976 Montreal Olympics as favourite for the Gold medal. He finished a disappointing sixth overall. In 1980 he again went into the Olympics a – this time in Moscow – as favourite, but this time finished fifth, even though the winner’s putt of 21.35m was short of Capes’ British record of 21.55m, set in Wales earlier that year. Capes said afterwards that the result left him “numbed with disappointment”. In the 1980s, Capes turned professional and concentrated on the televised strongman events, for which he became a household name. He’d missed out on Olympics glory, but he won the World’s Strongest Man competition in 1983 and 1985.

The Great Olympic Garden Party

Recent winners A local athlete who didn’t miss out was Paul Barber, who was born in Peterborough in 1955. A legendary hockey player, he won Gold with the British squad at the 1988 Olympics in Seoul. Four years earlier, at the 1984 Olympics in Los Angeles, he had won a Bronze medal with the team. In a career that spanned over 25 Years, Barber won 99 caps for England and 68 for Great Britain. He retired from international hockey in 1988 and now lives in Bath with his wife and three sons. (See also our article on Colin Dale, Stamford hockey Olympian, on Page 38) Britain’s most successful Paralympic swimmer of all time was also born in Peterborough. Chris Holmes won nine swimming gold medals, four silver and one bronze in four Games. Now Director of Paralympic Integration at the 2012 Olympics and Paralympics, he returned to the city Chris Holmes earlier this year to examine disabled sporting facilities in the city and encourage local athletes. Visiting Peterborough Sailability at Ferry Meadows, he said: “I was born in Peterborough, and it is great to come back here. Projects like this give disabled people the chance to come and try out sport. It is not only encouraging people to have a go at the grass roots, but also the chance for people to get into the national team, and maybe become Paralympians of the future.” Ferry Meadows also happens to be the place where Olympian Nick Dempsey learned to sail. Nick, who was raised in Peterborough, finished 16th in the 2000 Olympics in Sydney, but took Bronze in Athens 2004 to become the first Briton to win an Olympics windsurfing medal. Now living in Weymouth, he finished fourth in the 2008 Beijing Games.

Louis Smith

We’re backing Louis! Great Britain has never been noted for worldclass gymnasts. But all that could change at London 2012 thanks to local Gold hopeful, Louis Smith. Born in Peterborough in 1989, Louis was a hyperactive child, according to his mother, Elaine Petch. He never crawled, but was running before he was a year old. He had broken his arm twice before the age of three, thanks to his love of climbing chairs and tables and launching himself into the air. To keep him out of mischief, Elaine enrolled him for gymnastics at the age of four, with his elder brother Leon. Within two years, the coach at the club told her that her son showed talent and recommended she took them to a club in Huntingdon. Here, Louis thrived under legendary coach Paul Hall. By the time he was 15, he was the European junior champion on pommel horse. And four years after that he won Bronze at the 2008 Games in Beijing. Previously, as a junior, he had been a twotime European Champion on pommel horse,

For those who want to watch the Olympics in a spectacular setting, Burghley will be throwing The Great Olympic Garden Party every day during the London Games With the Elizabethan house as the backdrop, Burghley’s normally closed private South Gardens will host a Big Screen, showing TV coverage from Saturday 28th July to Sunday 12th August - and included for free with a normal house and gardens ticket. Access to the screen will be available 10am to 10pm, last admission 6pm, with special film night tickets after 6pm at a reduced rate. A special Olympic Pass will also be available covering the whole period which will be given as wristbands in the colours of the Olympic Rings. A summer evening festival of outdoor screenings will feature four special film nights, launching on Sat 28th July at 7pm with iconic sports movie Chariots of Fire, followed by three other movie screenings: Pride and Prejudice on Wed 1st Aug, The Full Monty on Thur 2nd Aug and Mamma Mia on Fri 3rd Aug. in 2004 and 2006. He won Gold on pommel horse for England at the 2006 Commonwealth Games in Melbourne, Australia, and in 2007 he came fourth at the European Championships. His success in Beijing meant he was the first Briton to win a medal in the individual gymnastics at the Olympic Games since Walter Tysall – exactly a century earlier, in 1908. He was also only the second black male gymnast to win an Olympics medal. No wonder Smith returned from China to star treatment. But he hasn’t let the adulation go to his head. Now 23, he lives in Eye and trains harder than ever. “I’m going for gold this year,” he says. “I can’t get anything less and I don’t want silver now. Silver is just a shinier bronze - gold is the only option. To win gold would be unbelievable. LOCAL NEWS Boot camp blitz!

Sally Stillingfleet rather nervously accepted the assignment to go and check out Stamford’s very own Boot camp and to find out what it was all about At the start everyone stands around looking equally nervous in the new premises in the old Language School; but the hour long session soon gets going and we are stationed according to the forms we have already filled in about fitness levels and even competitiveness ( 5 or 6? ) to make sure the weights we are to use are suitable. I really like the variety of exercise done in short intense bursts, with a 20 second breather, thankfully. My partner Sarah and I get a fit of the giggles with the ‘towel shaking’ exercise in pairs (enough said!) and towards the end there’s a group exercise which is silly but immense fun. The good news is I am still here to tell the tale and chat to two Veterans Peter and Nikki. They both started with Rob’s sessions on the Meadows and have been consistent in their training two or three times a week. Now they have reaped the rewards, in terms of fitness levels and both have lost weight ( a stone and 2 stone respectively!) “The gym was boring,” Nikki explained. “I am far more self motivated now, Rob spurs you on!” “Rob has a holistic view on fitness and has a talent for getting the best out of everyone. The classes are a diverse mix of all ages and abilities and no two sessions are ever the same,” Peter told me. Both Nikki and Peter agreed on the winning formula of exercise variety, sense of humour and the feeling of there being a group bond, which is so important. As well as our Sport’s Day, (which did not get spoilt by rain!) we have been learning about the Olympic venues. Fun learning has included; reconstruction of historic Olympic events, building models of venues, redesigning Olympic Mascots, mapping host cities and origami Olympic rings! Y5 passed their ‘Bikeability’ awards, getting inspiration from the biographies of our British cycling team. Year 4 have even followed the training routines of Team G.B’s rowing team using computer animation! “So now you know a bit about us. Additionally, this year there is a special exhibition of work by an accomplished local potter, Pat Armstrong, who specialises in Japanese Raku glazed firing. Stamford Dog Show and Family Fun Day

The Stamford Dog Show, now in its 8th year, will be held on Sunday 9th September on The Meadows This very popular event for all the family is organised by Trinity Methodist Church, Stamford in conjunction with Pets Korner and Stamford Veterinary Centre. The show has two judging rings, covering Pedigree Classes (different breed classifications) and Novelty Classes – ranging from ‘Cutest Puppy’ to ‘Best Sausage Catcher’! There will also be a special Doggie Olympics and a Dog Agility ring for you to test your own dog as well as a parade of malamutes and huskies. It’s not just a Dog Show - there is also a reptile tent, where you can view and handle various lizards, snakes and spiders and a display of owls and falcons from the Rutland Falconry Centre. Children of all ages can drive their own Jumicar or have fun on the fair rides. There will be market stalls, face painting, children’s crafts and plenty of refreshments to suit all tastes. All proceeds from this event will go towards helping the Maua Hospital in northern Kenya and local charities including Evergreen Care Trust and Teenzone and the Youth Outreach programme. BRAUNSTON-IN-RUTLAND This walks starts at the pretty village of Braunston-in-Rutland, passing through gently undulating countryside. It includes a delightful route along a medieval track and stunning views towards Oakham DIRECTIONS

Cross over the stile at the west end of the church (the right-hand path), walking in a westerly direction close to the right edge of the field. Cross a ditch and then the diminutive River Gwash over a footbridge. Once over the river, follow a broad track between two fields as far as a gate. Once through the gate, you will soon pass South Lodge Farm on your right hand side. At the end of a long, thin strip of a field, cross to the other side of the tiny stream and follow it on the other side to the end of the next field. At this point the path cuts diagonally across the field (a tiny pond on your immediate left) to a stile in the far left-hand corner under an ash-tree, but most people appear to walk around the right hand side and then up. Once over this stile, head across a field (wet in winter) towards an opening at the top of the hill. At this point you get fine views of the Chater Valley to the south. Join the bridleway and head right (north), until you reach a road Take the right hand path (there are two), which crosses a field to another road. Turn right onto the road, and at the T-junction cross over on to the bridleway opposite. Stay on this bridleway, and do not be tempted by first a path and then a bridleway that branch off to the left. The route is heading north east. Cross the River Gwash again via a footbridge, then up a track and across a road, continuing to head NE, through two further gates and up a hill 5 At a gate on the right, you will see the bridleway heading across a grassy pasture. Towards the end of the second field, a gate takes you into a green lane heading south back to Braunston. Turn right when you reach the road, and you will soon be back at the start.

POINTS OF INTEREST

BRAUNSTON - All Saints’ Church dates back to the 13th century. It is notable for its medieval wall-paintings and odd-looking clock face. As you pass the west end of the church you will see a pagan figure standing at the foot of the tower. Theories abound as to what it signifies or exactly how old it is. Immediately beside the church is an open access area, where there is evidence of a medieval ridge and furrow field system and possibly a water mill and dam. There is a helpful information board a few yards down Wood Lane, just south of the church. THE RIVER GWASH flows to the south of the village. This sinuous stream subsequently runs into Rutland Water and then on to Ryhall before taking a big loop and joining the River Welland to the east of Stamford. STAMFORD LIVING AUGUST 2012

EYEBROOK RESERVOIR Jean Orpin and Sue Lee recommend a visit to Eyebrook. It was made by damming the Eye Brook, a tributary of the River Welland, and was the largest stretch of water in Rutland before Rutland Water was created History Eyebrook was built for Stewarts and Lloyds who moved the headquarters of their iron and steel company to Corby from Scotland in 1932, to enable them to take advantage of the ironstone of the area. Many of their Scottish workforce came and there is still a strong Scottish presence in Corby. Stewarts and Lloyds was nationalised in 1967 and closed in 1980. During this time they produced 2.5 million tons of steel. The company produced pipes that carried fuel under the sea for the D Day landings. Steel is still produced in Corby by Corus who manage the reservoir today. The reservoir was built between 1937 and 1940 to supply water to the steel works. Six million gallons of water were required each day for the steel works. The capacity was increased in 1955 and it now covers 400 acres. The new reservoir played a part in the Second World War when it was used by 617 Squadron, known colloquially as The Dambusters, to practise low-level bombing by the Lancasters prior to the raids on the Eder and Mohne dams in Germany in 1943. There are plaques on the wall of the dam to record this event and a display in the Fishing Lodge. Fishing Eyebrook is an attractive venue for fishermen as it is quiet and peaceful with no other water-based activities and is well stocked with trout. It is restricted to fly fishing. Over 20,000 trout are caught annually, which are reared in the fishponds nearby. Fishermen compete with kingfishers, ospreys and otters for their catch. The wildlife societies monitor and record sightings of all wildlife including birds, insects and flowers. Birds As soon as it was built the reservoir became a haven for wildlife and by 1956 was declared to be a Site of Special Scientific Interest which means that it is now managed within Natural England guidelines for all wild life. Eye Brook is a wonderful place to see migrating birds as they stop off to feed and rest on the journey north in the spring and south in the autumn. When they are travelling south they tend to stop off

for longer, and have their young with them, so from the end of August onwards through the winter there are birds to see. The water is quite close to the road with grazing between the two so you can see widgeons a stone’s throw away. During the winter thousands of waders like golden plovers can be seen on the muddy edges near the bridge, where the Eye Brook flows into the reservoir. The gull roosts are famous and songbirds like wheatears and yellow wagtails drop in on their journey from Africa. Ospreys are fairly regular visitors and little owls nest in the trees near the bridge. The birds have been monitored by the Leicestershire and Rutland Ornithological Society since the reservoir was formed and various projects carried out to encourage birds. Rutland Natural History Society also carries out some recording. Stoke Dry Stoke Dry is the small, attractive village that sits above the reservoir. It was the property of the Digby family closely implicated in the Gunpowder Plot – it has been said the plot was hatched here. Whether or not this was so, the church has many interesting features worth visiting. Access The reservoir lies on the boundary between Leicestershire and Rutland, two miles south of Uppingham. Take the A6003 south out of Uppingham, then turn right onto the minor road to Stoke Dry after a mile and a half. This road continues down the hill and round the northwest half of the reservoir. There is also a small parking area so that you can take a walk but as it is a Site of Special Scientific Interest it is not a good choice for taking the dog for a walk. You can park carefully anywhere along the road, taking care not to block field gateways or obstruct other traffic. There is a road round the reservoir that enables you to see the wildlife from the car. If you are a member of the Rutland Natural History Society or the Leicestershire and Rutland Wildlife Trust you can receive permission to enter the private areas of the Eyebrook which are closed to the public.

BURGHLEY SCULPTURE GARDEN

Celebrate everything there is to celebrate when it comes to the Land Rover. There’s something to for the whole family, from a

A visit to Burghley Sculpture Garden’s new exhibition may involve a walk on the wild side, as Flora and Fauna explores the animal and plant kingdoms through the sculptor’s eye. A menagerie of beasts stalk the gardens, whilst ﬂoral apparitions bloom throughout. Highlights include the work of Jerwood sculpture prize winner Benedict Carpenter, along with Sally Matthews’ Horse and Dog. Her working animals appear on the brink of exhaustion, having evidently endured a long day on the hoof. Intriguing parallels exist between the vitality of the animal sculptures present and the contribution of Mike Dodd, who has propagated a living sculpture. His Living Willow Tunnel is weaved from willow, and incites the viewer to move through it, as well as simply looking. It is a dynamic work that will grow and change with the seasons and may in turn become host to other climbing plants. Similarly, Laura Patacchia’s Drosera appears to be in a mortal struggle for preeminence with its host lime tree. As well as a direct exploration of animals and plants, another recurring theme in the show is Man’s treatment of the natural world and its resources through works that reconﬁgure man-made products and waste. THE TORCH ROUTE On July 3rd the Olympic Torch was carried through the historic streets of Stamford. Jean Orpin and Sue Lee followed its route

After the Enclosure Act, 1871 it was possible to build houses outside the town walls. Large middle class houses were built. These were popular as they had very good views over the Welland valley and were away from the cramped conditions in the town.

In the 13th century Oxford students tried to set up a rival university here. They brought the knocker from the gate at Brazenose College. It was ﬁnally returned to Oxford and a replica can be seen on an old gateway.

Since the Middle Ages a road has run just outside the town wall between St Peter’s and St Paul’s St. This was an industrial area in the 19C. Jeffrey and Blackstone were here before moving to Ryhall Road and so were Hayes and Son, Wagon and Carriage Builders.

Until 1960 this was part of the Great North Road carrying a great deal of trafﬁc. There were a number of inns and public houses. Truesdale and Snowden both endowed an almshouse for the poor on this street. Stamford Fire Station was here, now the car park.

A market was held here before 1066. It is named after an Inn which closed in the early 18th century. In the 14th century there were permanent market stalls. A market is still held here on Saturday. The square was paved recently and a milestone placed to mark the sites of Eleanor Crosses.

This was the main street in the 9th century Danish town. The meat market and the ﬁsh market were held here. It has been the main commercial street since the 18th century. St Michael’s church is now commercial premises. National retailers have replaced the family run shops.

St Paul’s St This was the main street east from the earliest times. St Paul’s church (now the school chapel) became Stamford Grammar School in the 16th century. The Norris family who were well known bell founders had premises here.

Wharf Road This road takes its name from the buildings formerly standing along the river when it was navigable. It was always an industrial area. The arch which belonged to Grant’s Iron foundry remains and Gas Lane is a reminder of the gasworks erected in 1824.

High St S Martin’s This street is the entry to the town from the South. The ﬁrst bridge was built in the 10th century. The George Hotel was a large coaching inn where coaches changed horses on their journey from London to York. Memorials to the Cecils are in St Martin’s Church. STAMFORD LIVING AUGUST 2012
