Schools out: A lesson in style A group of hardworking teachers from local schools volunteered to have a make-over to help sort out any dressing dilemmas and take advantage of a much needed post-Christmas boost from talented New College Stamford’s Hair and Media Make-up students. Sally Stillingfleet enjoyed a day out at Stamford’s Welland Academy finding out more about what’s required to look presentable in the classroom these days Georgina really suits the new take on the 1970s silhouette for this season, especially as she often has to wear smarter suits for her management days at Malcolm Sargent. Even though Charlotte says she prefers dresses, by trying jeans and a blazer I have shown she can still look smart and the well fitting Esprit jeans really elongate her legs. After returning to work after maternity leave Sarah relished the idea of trying a dress. The Nordic dresses from a local on-line company are perfect as they show off Sarah’s figure and could be dressed up for smarter occasions. After sticking to the same couple of staples it’s nice to have a change. As an Art teacher Lauren’s clothes can quickly get ruined! By adding this jacket in a lovely fabric from Arch Label Agency she can look smarter when she needs to and wear an apron in the classroom. Heidi and Lucy are bound by the Stamford High School PE kit - navy tracksuit bottoms, white polo shirt and fleece. They both love to go shopping for other clothes. Lucy is a petite lady who knows what suits her shape. She finds it difficult to find on-trend fitted shapes, so looks perfect in a jersey dress from Energy teamed with a biker jacket, instead of her usual jeans. Heidi prefers skinny jeans, boots and casual tops, so we thought we would try the looser printed trousers from Attic, which go perfectly with a chiffon top.
Dom presented the biggest challenge - the tallest model and one with the largest feet! Marcia May Shoes to the rescue; they ordered in his boots and Sarah from Energy found the perfect fitting jeans – a welcome change from his shorts and school t-shirt. Sarah from Energy found him “a good pair of jeans”, as Dom’s concern was that the amount of denim needed tended to reduce the fashionable cut.

Many thanks to the girls from New College Stamford, with special thanks to Imogen for coordinating: - ImogenSabrina Isaacs, Mollie Cook, Malak Al Obaydi, Karolina Bubala. Currently studying for their Level 3 Diploma in Hair and Media Make-up. A one year course, which includes all aspects of theatrical and media make-up, including the application of special effects make-up. The diploma also includes hair design and styling, including wigs. The brief received was to complete a make-over of some hardworking teachers and give them a more glamorous look. All the girls planned a face chart in advance with a look for each teacher. This made their features brighter and stand out more for the photographs. Many thanks to the Stamford Welland Academy for the use of their facilities. We really are spoilt for choice when it comes to hairdressers in Stamford, with many offering services and products that you’d only expect to find in a large city. Genevieve Potter has an update on just a few of the best hairdressers in our town, from the long-established to some refreshing newcomers
Oliver Lee Salon The Oliver Lee salon is in the location formerly occupied by Sloane’s in St John’s St. Run by Oliver Lee-Follows and business partner Jill Scott, it has a stylish, airy, feel with lots of great little touches to make its clients feel welcome and relaxed. Clients receive a complimentary Shiatsu head massage as well as a hand and arm massage, whilst receiving a tailor-made haircut. The unique Colour Bar allows the team to create the perfect seasonal look, or, for a complete new image, the hand-made Racoon International brand extensions can create a lustrous, long London look. For men, a complete grooming experience is on offer, for example, a Turkish cut-throat shave and a sharp and fresh haircut. The salon uses Paul Mitchell professional products, including XG Paul Mitchell colour and stocks a full retail range including the Mitch male grooming range. TREND PREDICTION: Oliver thinks that spring 2015 will see some hugely exciting trends - inspired by late 60s Rock ‘n Roll and the festival scene. But it’s the finish which will make your hair cut really stand out, with texture, bounce, wave, bed-hair and mod inspired fringes taking centre stage. • Oliver Lee, 11 St John’s Street, Stamford PE9 2DB Tel: 01780 754828 www.oliverleestamford.co.uk
Asembo Asembo is a salon that’s evangelical about colour, specifically Redken colour. It’s a certified Redken salon, using professional products in all treatments and stocking the complete homecare range. All of the Asembo staff can provide educated recommendations on which products will suit clients’ hair the best and both Lisa-Marie and Natasha underwent an intensive colouring course at the Redken training academy in London over the course of a year, both passing with (you guessed it), flying colours! Asembo is also the only salon in Stamford stocking Mizani, a product and service range targeted at the Afro-Caribbean market and those with naturally curly hair. For gents, there are four members of staff qualified to carry out luxury wet shaves and Asembo also stocks the Redken Colour Camo range of products for those men who wish to “conceal to signs of ageing”, (hide those grey hairs). TREND PREDICTION: In terms of hair trends for 2015, the team are expecting their clients to favour a “coming-undone” style, the ‘au naturel’, tousled look that mimics the 1970s rocker trend. There’s also a move towards more adventurous colour and it looks like we’ll be seeing bold, bright colours becoming a much bigger trend this year. • Asembo, 20 St Leonard’s Street, Stamford PE9 2HN Tel: 01780 765337 www.asembo.co.uk

Browns Browns is part of a chain of six regional salons that all pride themselves on superb customer service. Thursday is colour day at Browns, with 50% off colouring on offer, including ammonia-free L’Oreal colour. The salon stocks a huge selection of products including Kerastase and Redken. There are also express blow-dry appointments – often available on stand-by. Wedding and prom hair are well catered for and Browns offer a Brazilian blow dry treatment which guarantees smooth, glossy hair. The team are predicting that natural waves and curls, as seen on the spring 2015 catwalk, will be a huge trend as we head in to spring and
summer, with middle partings, soft fringes and cooler colour shades also making a comeback. If you’re a new customer you’ll receive 20% off your first cut and finish – contact the salon for more details. • Browns Hairdressing, 3 Red Lion Square, Stamford PE9 2AJ Tel: 0844 999 3365 www.browns-hair.co.uk

? g n i s dres Mojo Mojo is a unisex salon based in the heart of Stamford’s town centre, next to the Hambleton Bakery on Ironmonger Street. Recently the salon has had a total refurbishment, with new décor and furniture. New recruit Charlie Francis, who is tipped as one of the best young hairdressers in the area, has also recently joined the talented Mojo team. As well as leading colour and styling Schwarzkopf products, the salon is one of only a select few salons in the UK stocking O’right, a range of certified organic shampoos and styling products which contain powerful plant extracts, essential oils and antioxidants, delivering beautiful and ethical results. There’s a comprehensive treatment list, including wedding hair packages, barber services for men, Balmain hair extensions and keratin hair straightening and there are six stylists on hand at Mojo including Director and Owner Sharon. Upstairs, resident beautician Zoe offers a great range of beauty services, including OPI nails and Crystal Clear facials. • Mojo, 1a Ironmonger Street, Stamford PE9 1PL Tel: 01780 757070
Maples The Maples team pride themselves on providing truly excellent customer service - whether re-styling, perming, blow-drying or creating party up-dos. If you’re feeling the need for some serious length, Maples offer Great Lengths hair extensions as seen on celebrity A-listers including Cheryl Cole. Product ranges include Kerastase and L’Oreal colour and the team undertake regular training to stay in touch with current hairdressing trends. TREND PREDICTION: Maples predict that 2015 will see the continued popularity of the “killer bob” – with a blunt, sharp line, but styled softly with a wave. Bed-head tousled hair will also continue to be a huge trend, embracing natural texture. If you want to be bang up to date with your colour, deep reds, coppers and platinum blonde will be at the fore, with the new “baby lights” technique taking over from last year’s ombre trend, with smaller, very fine highlights for a natural, sunkissed look. • Maples, 24 St Mary’s Street, Stamford PE9 2DJ Tel: 01780 752725 www.maplesofstamford.co.uk
Gerards Hair and Beauty Stamford’s only Aveda salon, Gerards Hair and Beauty, is situated in the unique and tranquil surroundings of the George Hotel Mews. Garie Nigel Hairwork Garie Nigel Hairwork offers a dedicated hairdressing service in the heart of town, from a beautiful medieval loft where they have been trading since 1986. 2015 is going to be an exciting year for the salon, with Monet (Garie’s daughter and colleague), having being chosen along with nine other talented young hairdressers to join Tigi’s highly prestigious Inspirational Youth 2014 Team. 2015 also sees the salon embarking on a new range of hair colours from Tigi. A workshop, run by one of Tigi’s top colourists and educators, took place within the salon and the team at Garie Nigel Hairwork are looking forward to stocking the stunning new colours, which can be semi-permanent or permanent. Also arriving in 2015 are a new range of hair extensions for customers seeking length and volume. All of this, and customers are treated to loyalty cards too! • Garie Nigel Hairwork, 6 Silver Lane, Stamford PE9 2BT Tel: 01780 751511
2015 sees a straightening revolution – Aveda has harnessed the power of plants to create a new wonder cream “Smooth Infusions Naturally Straight Crème” to seriously straighten your hair. The more you use this product, the more effortlessly straight your style becomes, but when you are ready to return back to more texture and wave, all it takes is three washes to reverse the effect. T
t Aquilia Acupuncture in Stamford you will find acupuncturist Miss Lianne Aquilina BSc Hons MBAcC ATCM DipAy APA and her associate Mrs Corinne Alexander BA Hons MBAcC conducting a range of acupuncture treatments at their specialist acupuncture clinic which was founded in 2005. Treatments range from acupuncture for fertility to osteoarthritis of the knee. Lianne Aquilina (a multinational acupuncture textbook author and visiting guest lecturer on the topic) is currently studying a Masters of Science (part-time) at the University of York Health Science Department in Applied Health Research. Lianne aims to combine her expertise in acupuncture with high quality research skills. The British Acupuncture Council has a Research Resource Centre which reviews published research for a range of different conditions; here is an example involving osteoarthritis of the knee: ‘Several systematic reviews of acupuncture for osteoarthritis (of peripheral joints, knee and hip, or knee alone) concluded that it is statistically superior to usual physician care, and similar in benefit to some other active interventions such as exercise regimes (Kwon 2007; White 2007; Manheimer 2007, 2010). The expert consensus guidelines of the Osteoarthritis Research Society International (Zhang 2008, 2009), recognised that acupuncture has clinically relevant benefits, and a favourable safety profile, and recommend acupuncture as a treatment option for osteoarthritis (Reinhold 2008).’ Lianne Aquilina says ‘it is great that the evidence-base for acupuncture is growing, and for integrated healthcare, evidence-base is paramount. However, there are many people that are not interested in how it works, or the current research and seem to give it a try anyway purely because acupuncture has been around for centuries’! At Aquilia Acupuncture we are highly trained, qualified, experienced and are used to dealing with complex chronic cases that have been hard to resolve with medical treatments alone, and where people seek a different treatment approach and our support.’ • If you would like to discuss acupuncture research or find out whether acupuncture may help you contact Lianne and Corinne at: 2, Scotgate Mews, Stamford, PE92FX Tel: 01780 763465 | 07903 725316 www.aquilia.co.uk www.aquiliafertility.co.uk www.facebook.com/AquiliaAcupuncture

Stamford COPTHILL SCHOOL – MORE THAN JUST AN EDUCATION... Antonia Scott sits down with Jonathan Teesdale, headmaster, to find out what makes Copthill so special
C
OPTHILL Independent Day School is celebrating another ‘Outstanding in all areas’ Early Years Department inspection by the Independent School Inspectorate, which assesses provision for children’s well-being, leadership and management and the overall quality and standards of the Early Years Foundation Stage. The emphasis was on the strong relationships forged between staff and children which is a direct result of the high staff to pupil ratio which ensures the “children feel secure and are exceptionally well looked after.” Copthill is also praised for its “richly resourced environment” and the benefits of its long established Forest School are acknowledged as “a significant strength”. Headmaster Jonathan Teesdale welcomes the report’s recognition that “adults make learning fun and the children respond by being highly motivated and curious leaders” which is at the heart of Copthill’s teaching and learning. The thriving Early Years Department has always been at the core of the school since its beginnings in 1969 and the school continues to provide a fun and challenging educational environment for 21st century learning, whilst still retaining core family values. From EYFS through to Year 6 pupils, Copthill aims to bring out the best in every boy and girl, whether academically, musically, on the stage or the sports field, by encouraging children to grow in confidence and achieve a well rounded education. Jonathan Teesdale passionately believes that every child has potential and so the school provides a huge range of opportunities to ensure that all talents can be discovered to ensure they move on to secondary school, with self belief. On leaving Copthill, Year 6 pupils go on to a wide variety of local state and independent senior schools and many pupils gain scholarships and awards each year which reflect Copthill’s high academic, sporting and musical standards. Copthill are holding an Open Morning on Thursday 26th February from 9.00am till 11.00am - where pupils will be delighted to show you THEIR Copthill. For more details contact: www.copthill.com Tel: 01780 757506
OLD COPTHILLIANS ALUMNI
One of the great joys for the Teesdale family is hearing the news of the continued success of past Copthill pupils. Mrs Anne Teesdale (Senior!) who first opened her farmhouse doors to children over 45 years ago, still comes into school and regularly has contact with former pupils or their parents who remain in the area. It was this enthusiasm to remain in contact with past pupils that initiated her son, Jonathan Teesdale, Headmaster of Copthill to set up an Old Copthillians Alumni with the help of one of the first pupils, Antonia Scott (née Williams) in the hopes of hearing from as many past pupils as possible. A Facebook page has been set up with the sole aim of reconnecting pupils, exchanging news and establishing a vibrant social interaction. The school plans to invite all past pupils back to Copthill for various events in 2015, so they can enjoy reminiscing together and see how much has changed since its humble origins. www.facebook.com/ oldcopthillians

Awarm welcome A wood burning stove can be a great design feature and focal point in any room, creating a warm and cosy space. We visited some of our local suppliers and found a great choice of beautiful products from traditional, to retro and contemporary designs. There is definitely a style to suit every personal taste and house style. But looks is not enough, and there are other points you will need to consider when making your choice; would a dedicated wood burner or a multi fuel stove work better for you? What is the right size and heat output for your room? All the suppliers featured here are experts in their field and will be able to advise you on the best product for your room as well as install it. Stoves need to be installed by a qualified installer and meet building regulations. Photography by Elli Dean 24

Nest Estates can sell your home quickly J
ayne Knights and Matthew Payton at Nest Estates pride themselves on giving unbiased advice to vendors on how to get the maximum value from selling their home Jayne said: “We like to help people understand how they can sell their property Emlyns St more quickly and for the best price. That might be something as simple as de-cluttering the house to changing the layout of a room to make it look more spacious. Or making a bedroom look like a bedroom rather than a junk room, by making up the bed and making it look homely. Most buyers typically make up their minds in the first couple of minutes, so it’s vital that the first impression is right. Fairly simple changes can often make a big difference to the speed with which a house sells. You have only one opportunity to sell the property, so it needs to be right first time.” The Stamford market has had a strong start to 2015, and Nest Estates has sold all types of properties, all with features that have made them desirable to potential purchasers: • Exeter Gardens – super location, lots of
Emlyns St entertainment space, fabulous garden • Emlyns St – period character, charming outlook • Casterton Rd – great location, spacious, beautiful garden, great features • Hambleton Rd – great views, easy walk to town, ideal family home. Time to look again at your mortgage? Oliver Lee Salon T
his time last year an increase in interest rates before the end of 2014 seemed highly likely, with clear signs of recovery fuelling expectations. Yet now, with falling inflation and fears over the health of the eurozone, markets are not expecting the Bank of England base rate to rise until early 2016. While that may yet change, and let’s not overlook the inevitable uncertainty that will come with the impending general election, the benign environment – at least for borrowers, if not savers – could mean that now is the ideal time to look again at your mortgage to make sure that you have the best deal for you. There are a wide range of mortgages out there, from discount to capped rates, to fixed rate deals. Each has pros and cons. The most suitable one for you will depend on your needs but also your attitude to risk and expectations or otherwise of future rate rises! If you are looking for some help or advice then do feel free to come and talk to Handelsbanken, either in person or over the telephone. Richard Harrison of Handelsbanken says: “We believe in traditional, local banking; in building strong relationships with our customers, and getting to know them and the communities in which we operate thoroughly. This way we can provide you with the service you need and, where appropriate, the products to suit your needs.” He continued: “As a bank we have no sales targets and we are not paid either bonuses or commission. Our focus will always be on making the right decisions for our customers, with those decisions made at a local level, by the managers that know you best. We look forward to hearing from you.” Your home may be repossessed if you do not keep up repayments on your mortgage.

A bright new, modern hair salon has recently opened in Stamford run by Oliver Lee-Follows together with his business partner Jill Scott
T
he salon is in the location formerly occupied by Sloanes in St John’s St and has undergone a major facelift which has made it look very stylish, spacious and welcoming. Oliver is passionate about hairdressing, having started out when he was just 13 – he aims for ‘affordable luxury’ and brings to bear the latest techniques in hairdressing and colouring, using Paul Mitchell products. But it’s the extras that make this place stand out; a top-notch coffee machine and complimentary drinks; a head and arm/hand massage with every cut; a wet shave area with a complimentary glass of whisky; a colour bar where you can relax and observe the art and science of colour creation. Jill & Oliver are both from
Boston way. What brought them over here: “We had always known about the George of course,” Oliver told me, “but we were amazed when we looked around by the quality of the shops, especially the independents; and the whole friendly ambience of the place.” • Oliver Lee, 11 St John’s St, Stamford, PE9 2DB Tel: 01780 754828 www.oliverleestamford.co.uk STAMFORD LIVING FEBRUARY 2015

MUSIC
LET THE CHOIR SING! Since its formation in 2007, local choir Stamford Singers has performed concerts across the region for a variety of good causes and charities and sung services in no fewer than sixteen cathedrals across the UK, including Westminster Abbey and York Minster. Members now have their sights set on St. Paul’s Cathedral. Chorister and Secretary Lesley Kirby tells Amander Meade about their plans
“T
HE choir was formed by the then Director of Music for the Stamford Endowed Schools, Paul White, in response to an invitation from Belgian brass ensemble, Kalison, to join them in their home town of Haasdonk and give a concert in the local church. A dozen singers from around Stamford and Rutland were gathered together by Paul, and along with organist David Lovell Brown, made the trip to Belgium. The concert was a great success, and the choir was invited to sing at the regular service in the church the following morning. Happy to oblige, Paul and the singers were disconcerted to discover on arriving at the church that the hymns were to be sung in Flemish, and that the custom was for the congregation to listen to the choir sing rather than join in. An instant and rapid lesson in pronunciation led to an enthusiastic rendering.” Although it was never the intention that this ‘one-off’ event should mark the beginning of a new choir, the small group of singers were very keen to continue singing together so almost seven years on, under the direction of Paul, now retired, and with David still as accompanist, Stamford Singers continues to thrive. The ensemble has developed into a chamber choir capable of singing services in some of the country’s most prestigious cathedrals. Opportunities to sing in cathedrals occur when their own choirs are taking a holiday break and as these occasions are limited, applications by visiting choirs often have to be made several years in advance. Requirements vary from a simple email enquiry followed by a reply with a choice of dates, to the more formal procedure that had to be followed when the choir applied to sing in Westminster Abbey. “Happily our
application was satisfactory and Stamford Singers had the honour of singing services in Westminster Abbey in April 2013.” “Part of the fun of visiting different cathedrals is discovering the particular resonance of each building,” explains Lesley. “Every cathedral has its own personality and distinctive style of operation, and the choir has become proficient at adapting to the varying requirements of each individual establishment. We may have to negotiate an elaborate walk up staircases and around the building singing as we go, or have just a short walk to the choir stalls. Some of the buildings are surprisingly difficult to sing in, whereas others, such as Derby and Wells have such wonderful acoustics that the voices just sing out effortlessly.” Recently the choir has adopted The Evergreen Care Trust as its nominated charity, and is hoping to host a fundraising “Come and Sing Messiah” event in the spring of 2015. As they begin preparations for an application to sing in St. Paul’s Cathedral, Stamford Singers are happy to receive enquiries from potential new members and organisations looking for fundraising opportunities. “We really have a lot of fun with social events throughout the year including gatherings at pubs, meals out and parties hosted in members’ homes. Trips to cathedrals usually see husbands and wives of choir members coming along too with a group meal arranged during the stay. There is very much a ‘family atmosphere’ within the choir, and new members comment on how welcome they feel.” • Full details of how to contact the choir, and more information about forthcoming events can be found on its website at www.stamfordsingers.org

UPDATES
Welcome to The Yard! Antonia Scott catches up with Aimee and Jo - the creative talent behind The Yard’s success
T
he Yard – formerly Rascals softplay – in Stamford is soon to be celebrating their first year anniversary, having opened their doors last May after a complete make-over. Run by young mums, Aimee Swift and Jo Henchy, they created a space that is bright, clean and family friendly. The Yard’s ethos is to bring the outside in, with their bright sunshine yellow walls and chairs and aromatic lavender plants at the food counter. A wonderful selection of homebaked cakes by local Treatley’s are beautifully presented, along with a variety of grilled sandwiches sourced from Askers Bakery and delicious barista-made coffees to keep parents happy. The Yard differs from many other softplay centres is that they specialise in welcoming
a host of varied business entrepreneurs who showcase their creative talents as weekly ‘pop ups’– whether it’s Dinky Dancers, Tatty Bumpkins Yoga, Usborne Book Sales, Baby Signing, Woolly Wednesdays knitting circle or Eleanor Turner rocking the place on her harp! Antonia Scott ran two ‘Paint a Pot with Tooty’ workshops at The Yard in December – which proved very popular and was attended by many local parents all keen to give personalised hand and foot print gifts. There will be another workshop at The Yard on Wednesday 4th February from 10am – 4.30pm which will make perfect Valentine’s presents. • The Yard, Unit 2, West Street, Stamford. PE9 2PL Tel: 01780 480610 www.theyardstamford.co.uk Open Tues – Sun: 10am – 4pm for 0-7 year olds. Prices: over 2’s - £4.50, under 2’s - £3, under 6 months and all adults – free.
What is Dermapen? T
he Dermapen is the latest version of dermarolling. The Derma FNS (fractional needling system) is the one used at the Cosmetic Clinics which is actually the very latest revolutionary advanced skin needling system. It uses needles to temporarily damage the skin and trick it into stimulating new collagen and elastin development. By having adjustable needles it causes much less damage to the epidermal skin, so virtually very little downtime and because a numbing cream is applied before the procedure it is relatively painless. As well as treating acne scarring, burn wounds and scars it has fast become an extremely popular treatment at the clinics for rejuvenation of the skin for skin tightening, minimising pore size and also improving wrinkles and fine lines. The Derma FNS miraculously brings alive that dull, flat grey and lined skin that seems to have appeared overnight. After the redness has settled the skin will be plumper and more radiant and the fine lines around the eyes will be significantly reduced. A course of 3-4 treatments is recommended for the best possible results. So plenty of time to plan a treatment or have the course of 2 - 3 Derma FNS procedures before the spring for healthy glowing skin. • To book a consultation with Miss Butt please contact the Cosmetic Clinic Peterborough – 01733 310090 or the King’s Lynn clinic – 01553 692531.

BRINGING LOCAL FOOD TO LIFE
‘Gis a butcher’s! T
HERE are some excellent butchers in the region. Stamford has Nelson’s and Grasmere Farm; Oakham has Leeson’s, Hambleton Farms Fine Foods and Rutland Charcuterie Co.; Uppingham has Culpin’s. Then there are our genuine farm shops with their exceptional butchery counters, including Northfield Farm near Cold Overton and Groovy Foods near Bourne (also see guide opposite). However, if you want the ultimate in steak satisfaction, you need to cut, trim and prepare the meat yourself. And that’s where The Olive Branch’s new Butchery Masterclass comes in. Launched and run by the pub’s head chef and co-proprietor Sean Hope, the five-hour hands-on course (followed by a five-course tasting menu and matched wines – or beers – if you wish) has been set up in response to customer demand. The day starts at 8am when you meet for coffee and pastries at The Olive Branch before being introduced to half a locally sourced pig or lamb. You then wield the knife under Sean’s expert tuition (or just watch if you prefer), working your way through the different cuts including chops, fillet, loin, shoulder and belly. You’ll also learn forgotten skills such as how to prepare stock and dripping, and – if you’re working with pork – how to make scratchings. After being a butcher for the morning you have the option of sitting down for a fivecourse tasting menu cooked by Sean using some of the cuts you’ve just created, served with wine, beer and cider to match. There is also the option of staying over at Beech House (The Olive Branch’s award-winning bed and breakfast accommodation over the road in Clipsham) either before or after the masterclass. Whatever you choose, all attendees go home with all those juicy cuts of meat from your half pig or lamb, vacuumsealed and labelled ready for the freezer. You’ll also go home with recipe notes for each cut. Sean said: “I decided to launch the course because customers kept telling me they were interested in butchery tuition and keen to stock up on local pork and lamb. Buying unbutchered half animals is great value if you know what to do with them. “The Masterclass is relaxed and informal,

and individuals can decide to get as little or as much hands-on experience as they want. It makes a unique gift for people with passion for good food and wine – it’s the ultimate spa day alternative!” Dan Hiblin from Stamford who attended Sean’s first Butchery Masterclass said: “If you’re into good food and particularly like your meat, this is a must. It was a very enjoyable and informative butchery session followed by a top-notch taster dinner with great wine to complement each course. Thoroughly recommended!” Pricing is as follows: Meat, plus tuition (8am-12pm), coffee, pastries and recipe notes: £75 The above plus five-course tasting menu: £120 The above plus matched wine/beer/cider selection: £145 For an overnight midweek stay at Beech House, add £150

Moores Estate Agency in Stamford opens stunning new office
Moores has just opened a new office in Stamford, in the heart of the Sheepmarket. The old building, which has been completely re-furbished, has a fabulous stand-alone position that gives it a really classy feel and is highly visible to residents and visitors alike “We discovered,” said Vernon Moore, the owner, “that this part of town has a very high footfall, so we will be seen by the maximum number of people.” The main residential business in Stamford will be headed up by Harriett Norton, and the Country & Equestrian business will be headed up by Jenny Moore, with its own dedicated room. 70% of purchasers at this upper end come from outside the region, and Moore’s marketing and London associates are very important at bringing in new buyers. The new outlet is very impressive. They have done a great job on the restoration, including cleaning the stone on the outside; and it has a great outlook across the Sheepmarket. But above all it is welcoming, unhurried, and feels like a place to spend time in and have a cup of coffee; and the team is young, dynamic and forward-looking. You have the feeling that you will get the best possible result here, and enjoy the process too. • Moores Estate Agents, Sheep Market, Tel: 01780 484555 www.mooresestateagents.com • Offices also in: Oakham, Uppingham, Melton, London and Grantham (Train Station, Platform 1) STAMFORD LIVING FEBRUARY 2015

DESIGN SOLUTIONS
QKSNewShowroom QKS Kitchens in Stamford has just put the finishing touches to a new showroom with ten complete new kitchen layouts for you to pore over and plan your next perfect kitchen.
T
he kitchens range from daringly contemporary to reassuringly traditional, with everything in between. And with a huge choice of colours, finishes and handles you can create exactly the effect that you are looking for. The Sheraton Kitchens are endorsed by George Clarke of Amazing Spaces fame – and he should know a thing or two! One of my favourite new kitchens is the Sheraton modern layout that you see in the showroom on the right just as you come in. I especially like the contoured wall surface; and the ingenious retractable ‘hood’ that means no unsightly hood above the hob. This kitchen is a bespoke factory-built unit with excellent Siemens appliances. The solid oak wood can be painted in any paint of your choice. All QKS’s great kitchens are fitted expertly by an in-house installation team; and any ancillary work that needs doing can easily be handled. There is also an excellent design service to ensure you get the most possible benefit out of your kitchen space. • QKS, The Maltings, Stamford, PE9 2NA Tel: 01780 755855 www.qksstamford.co.uk

MOTORING
New name. Even better service
The former Cooks Citroën dealership in Storeys Bar Road, Peterborough was recently re-branded Robinsons Citroën – and we’re happy to report the change has built still further the site’s excellent reputation for service
R
OBINSONS Motor Group of Norwich bought Cooks Motor Group at the end of 2012, and Robinsons immediately announced it intended to retain the entire Citroën dealership team at the site. Sales Manager John Howard, who has worked here for many years, explains why existing and new customers will be excited to see the changes which have resulted, alongside a real sense of business-as-usual. How has the Robinsons name added to what has clearly been an extremely successful Citroën dealership site in Peterborough for well over two generations? Robinsons have given us the opportunity to expand the business. For example we’ve recruited extra technicians to ensure customers’ service wait times are reduced. We also have the benefit of experience and size of company that comes with a group of 26 dealers. How do you account for Citroën’s success in this area? We have a very established team, and have always worked hard to look after customers, ensuring they get a fair deal. Our regulars are pleased to know they’re dealing with the
same friendly faces, offering the same level of efficiency as before. This is unusual in the car trade. We have technicians who’ve been here 20 years, and some members of the sales team, including myself, have worked here for 16 years. What improvements in service are customers likely to see? We’ve been able to take on extra staff to ensure customers get a first class service, and more importantly, everybody here is customer focused. We give all our customers who come in for work or collect their car a follow-up call to ensure they’re 100% happy, and we now offer fixed price servicing and service contracts to make paying for services even easier. Are there new sectors of the local market for both cars and commercials that you, as Sales Manager, will tackle? We’ve seen the launch of the C4 Cactus and the all-new C1 in 2014, and this year we’re hoping to attract new customers who may not have considered Citroën before. Both these cars will be promoted by us in 2015. We also want to build on the success of the DS range, which is proving very popular indeed.
Driving the all-new C4 Cactus
T
HE Citroën name is synonymous with innovation. From the time it created the world’s first all-steel bodied car in 1924 and the iconic 2CV in 1949, through its advanced Hydractive computer-controlled self-levelling suspension (on the XM in 1989) to the innovative C3 Hybrid Air, unveiled at the Geneva motor show in 2013 – the company has led the field in technical advances. Thus one of its latest creations the new C4 Cactus – one of the brand new models Robinsons Citroën is pleased to offer right now - has a thrilling sense of newness in its design, which you simply won’t find elsewhere. Fed up with doors or corners being dented by inconsiderate drivers? The Cactus neatly addresses that with its Airbump soft outer body areas, designed to absorb small knocks. Also aware that the sheer weight of cars generally creates a major drain on fuel usage and environmental impact, Citroën has made the new vehicle, launched last April, weigh around 200 kg (almost 450 pounds) less than an ordinary hatchback. In addition to greater fuel economy, it rides better and saves money on items like tyres, brakes and suspension. Then there’s Magic Wash, another small but ingenious advance. We’ve all seen cars spurting screen wash liquid into the air – anywhere but the windscreen – Citroen gets round that by removing the jets from the bonnet, and putting them into the wiper blade tips. Clever stuff. At the wheel the road-test car, a BlueHDi 100 manual (£17,990.00 on the road) feels wonderfully light and responsive. The economical diesel engine offers plenty of low-down torque (i.e. pulling power) making acceleration lively but smooth. The layout in front of the driver is refreshingly simple and for once isn’t cluttered by more dials and knobs than a jumbo jet cockpit. Instead there’s the nicely proportioned wheel (with certain controls such as audio volume built-in), and easy to read speedometer display, a stalk to the left controlling indicators, lights, and wipers, plus the gearlever on this manual version. Taking pride of place in the centre of the dash is an easy-to-use iPad style display, which operates just about everything else – including air con, digital radio (note there’s no CD player – sign of the times!) Bluetooth functionality, and audio streaming. To the rear there’s a handy boot space under the hatch offering an amazing 358 litres of room, and we mustn’t forget the sofa-like seating and the clever storage spaces dotted around the interior. We want one! www.robinsonspeterborough.citroen.co.uk

Robert Goodwin looks at a new player in the online property search market
I
F you’re thinking of buying, selling, letting or renting in the near future then you need to read this. Here’s how it currently works: your Estate Agent or Letting Agent pays to advertise property on websites like Rightmove and Zoopla. Nearly 90% of people searching for property will make their initial search online so there is no denying the power of the internet and these sites. In fact, Rightmove is ranked 6th out of all UK websites, just below Amazon and above the BBC – we love property in this country! THE INTERNET GIANTS The scenario that agents currently find themselves in is a tricky one and quite unique to the industry – it is also a reflection on the UK property world’s inability to move with the times. Rightmove and Zoopla have effectively created a duopoly in which agents pay an awful lot of money for a service that they must use. On average an Estate Agent pays over £700 per branch, per month, to use Rightmove alone. There are approx 15,000 agency offices in the UK, most of who list on Rightmove. I’ll let you do the sums. The problem with agents is that they are (in general) fearful of change and are too busy watching their competitors. This is how Rightmove and Zoopla have managed to creep up, clean up and create this duopoly situation. Now, you would think that somebody would step-in and take advantage of this scenario: after all, there are 15,000 disgruntled agents who would happily dump Rightmove and Zoopla given the chance. Well, many have tried with varying degrees of success over the years. Alas though the potential giant killers have failed in their attempts. But why have they failed? Well, it’s a mixture of not gaining the agent’s full trust and support (see above, very tricky) combined with the wrong people behind the scenes, mixed in with poor business models. THE NEW KIDS ON THE BLOCK Here enters the new kid on the block: Agents’ Mutual or, to use its publicfacing brand name, On The Market. Except that the faces behind the scenes are not new kids at all. In fact, they are a group of top bods from some of the UK’s prestige, traditional Estate Agencies including Savills, Knight Frank and Chesterton Humberts. They have hired Primelocation founder, Ian Springett, to head up the organisation. The concept is that agents who each have one share and one vote will wholly own the new property site. Profits will be reinvested and costs will be cut. There are a couple of factors that perhaps make this the first truly viable player. Firstly that the group have already raised a significant amount of investment, £7m as far as I am aware. Secondly because Agents’ Mutual are asking agents to ditch one of either Rightmove or Zoopla. Anyone who has studied economics will be aware of the prisoner’s dilemma, a scenario which shows how two apparently rational people may not co-operate as expected. Multiply this by 10,000, mix in a whole load of fear, anticipation, panic and old fashioned competition and you’ve got some idea of what’s going on right now in the agency world. Personally, I’ve gone through a massive swing in my opinion of Agents’ Mutual. When I initially read about it in the property trade press I laughed at the notion of having to leave either Rightmove or Zoopla. I hated the fact that a group of old boys were behind the scenes and the
old-fashioned nature of the phrase Agents’ Mutual bothered me. When the opportunity arose for me to attend an Agents’ Mutual meeting in Leicester I jumped at the chance. I came away 100% convinced by the pitch and felt it was a solid presentation, thank you. A room full of fear, determination & excitement! WHAT GOODWIN OFFERS So we have gone the full circle and here’s why. My own business is classed as a traditional agency, which means that we do not solely rely on online business but we are a traditional office-based Estate Agency. What we lose in portal enquiries we gain elsewhere: personal service, tailored marketing with a strong local presence, from a well positioned office, we also gain flexibility, agility and the ability to innovate and change to meet our clients’ needs. Whilst we will not be losing our presence on Rightmove, we are looking forward to the future of a website that is geared at the industry across the whole of the UK providing a solid platform for consumers to view properties. • Robert Goodwin FNAEA, MARLA Goodwin Property Services 01780 750005 - 2-3 St Johns Street, Stamford PE9 2DA STAMFORD LIVING FEBRUARY 2015

Sandra Naylor, Miniaturist Creating miniature scale models requires patience, resourcefulness and artistic skill. Jean Orpin and Sue Lee visited Sandra Naylor, a master craftsman
S
ANDRA is a skilled creator of miniature articles. She was born in Ryhall, where her father was a farmer then moved for a short time to Long Clawson before returning to Borderville, on the Ryhall Road out of Stamford. Her adult life has been spent in Stamford. From an early age Sandra and her siblings enjoyed making things for their own entertainment. She remembers making a raft to go on the river, a go-cart and hammocks. These practical skills also came in useful when she had children of her own. She made dolls’ cots out of shoeboxes, an Action Man tent and a My Little Pony horsebox. She also made a doll’s house, which inspired her to make other miniatures. She found others shared her interest and with a friend started a miniaturist group based at Ketton Club. For several years they met each month, sharing ideas and inspiring each other. They worked on a range of projects including a terrace of houses in which each member created an interior and a department store for which each member was given a department to do. Sandra’s Romany caravan pictured here was part of another project. The scale of all Sandra’s models is 1:12 – that is 1 inch for 1 foot – and everything is executed with great attention to detail. Fimo is a modelling clay which can be modelled into tiny objects like the fruit and vegetables on the stall but Sandra’s great skill is the ability to see potential in unusual materials. She uses a tremendous range of materials and is always on the look-out: cocktail sticks, beads, tiny pictures, wooden stirring sticks from the coffee shop have all been adapted to use in her miniatures. She also reduces images with the aid of the computer. She made a tiny family photograph album an inch square. Several of her models have been exhibited in local Shows and she has won numerous awards and prizes. One was for the flower and vegetable stall exhibited at the Stamford Horticultural Society and another was a miniature version of the Show itself. The tiny vegetables were all crafted with the same precision that the exhibitors were achieving in the real show.

HEALTH
Elderly Care: Making the right choices
Bluebird Care
Antonia Scott takes a look at local options for care for the elderly, both in one’s home and in residential care
A
S more people reach well beyond retirement age and the NHS figures reveal stark statistics of just how much living longer is costing the nation, quality care of our elderly generations is fast becoming a necessary requirement. As any elderly person or their family will testify, making the right care decisions can be a stressful and worrying time. Information and advice on the subject of long term care can seem confusing and often conflicting. Stamford and the surrounding area have various options to consider for your loved ones in their twilight years. The Lincolnshire Care Services Directory from Care Choices on 0800 389 2077 (also available online) is full of helpful and informative advice on choosing and paying for your care and support in Lincolnshire. It includes information on home support, specialist care, care homes and funding advice. Finding the right care home is very important for all family members’ health and peace of mind. The Care Quality Commission www.cqc.org.uk - provides free, independent reports on the quality of your local homes and care services. The Directory also provides a useful checklist of questions to ask when assessing whether a care home is suitable for oneself or a relative. The main care options available are to: • Move to retirement housing, with or without home care; • Remain in your own home, with or without home care; • Move to a care home; • Move to a care home with nursing; • Move to a hospice.
Care in the Community Evergreen Care Trust based on Ryhall Road in Stamford was established in May 2005 by a group of volunteers from across the local churches in response to identified needs of older and vulnerable people which did not fall within the remit of statutory health and social care agencies. The Trust has endeavoured to develop services appropriate to need; some are voluntary projects and other services are paid

Cross Keys Homes
Cross Keys Homes for by clients. Their mission statement “seeks to serve older and vulnerable adults in our community by improving their circumstances through advocacy, friendship and practical support.” www.evergreencare.org.uk Christchurch Stamford Day Centre was established over 40 years ago and now has 50 members who are elderly and housebound, who are collected from their homes every Wednesday and given a hot cooked meal, prepared by a team of four volunteer cooks. Members are provided with entertainment each afternoon followed by a cup of tea and cake before being taken home mid afternoon. For many members this is their only social interaction of the week and provides essential fellowship and a sense of being a valued member of the community. The Day Centre meets 45 weeks per year and involves 40 volunteer helpers, drivers and cooks. Funding for the centre comes from membership fees but these are kept to a minimum by support from local commerce, Cummins Generator Technologies and local charitable trusts. www.christchurchstamford.com/daycentre
Care Home with Nursing Cross Keys Homes says: “If you can’t always be there for them, we can.” They specialise in a ‘Life Line’ service for elderly or vulnerable people who would prefer to live in their own homes and stay independent, yet provides a discreet and effective way of summoning help 24 hours a day, which greatly allays family member’s worries. The lifeline personal alarm is a small unit that is fitted into homes close to a telephone that allows help to be sought by pressing a button. Cross Keys also provide
a lightweight pendant for the person to wear which has an emergency button that connects to immediate help. The service is from £4.40 per week or £160 in the first year. Contact: www.crosskeyshomes.co.uk/lifeline Tel: 01733 396439 Bluebird Care is a national provider of care in the home and their Stamford office is run by Leisa Mackenzie and Tim Carey, both Directors who have a very customer centric approach, “There is a misconception in the care for the older generation. They are not ‘elderly’; they do not come from the planet ‘Elder!’ They are simply older people, and as such, in order to lead their lives independently it is sometimes necessary for them to receive help in certain tasks; this is where Bluebird Care can help. Our approach is one of “What can we do for you?” It’s about how we help you achieve the life you want, and about promoting independence for the customer, to help them to lead as independent a life as possible. “Our customers have a wide range of requirements. Some may be older, less physically able to manage day to day chores, while other customer needs may be more complex and need a full care and support package. We work to a ‘Care Plan’ - each is specific to the individual person, be it in helping with domestic chores to shopping calls, through to personal hygiene and 24 hour live-in care. We are here for any individual who requires help and support in their own home to allow them to remain at home and keep their independence and choice. Whether it be due to age, illness or disability, our aim is to ensure that care remains personalised to meet their individual preferences, and to do this, the importance of

‘Cake for the Weekend’ from Deliciously Different Cakes Considering that Valentine’s Day falls on a Saturday you might want to think ahead and order a ‘Cake for the Weekend’ writes Sarah Lyon
L
ynne Kemps’ cakes are deliciously different and a bit quirky too. Her creative skill and passion for cake making has placed her cakes amongst top favourites for clients who visit The Fine Food Store in Stamford. More recently Lynne has moved her cake bakery from Easton on the Hill to new premises where clients can now order beforehand and conveniently collect from the newly converted bake house on Brownlow Street near the Ford Garage in Stamford. Lynne has transformed a shell of a space into a commercial kitchen uniquely fitted with an office and consultation area for customers to talk through their requirements. Wedding and celebration cake consultations can be booked for a weekend visit. ‘Cake for the Weekend’ is a new concept for Lynne and comes on the heels of much demand from clients who want a little more of a bespoke, made-to-measure cake. Lynne can modify size, flavour and filling to meet the desires of clients: “People can have their favourite cake in whatever size suits their family needs”. Lynne explains that the idea for ‘Cake for the Weekend’ came from customers enjoying the deliciousness of a slice of cake in The Fine Food Store and wanting to buy the whole cake to take home for the family. Lynne creates cakes for all seasons and for all occasions. Ingredients are sourced locally and Fairtrade when possible. Silverlane Foods, Silver Lane in Stamford provides a wonderful array of nuts and people tend to bring in bits and bobs from their allotments in season whether it be a glut of courgettes, carrots or apples. TRENDS IN CAKES Weddings Lynne made a two-tier wedding cake (courgette cake) as the centre piece cake and an individual courgette cake for each table of guests. With a move away from the more traditional fruit cake, the most popular flavours for wedding cake are lemon or chocolate sponge. Tall deep cakes (5” tall tiers and not so broad at the bottom) with sharp edges in Fondant icing are a popular wedding cake option: “I catered a ‘Naked wedding cake’ on New Year’s Eve where the bride had a three tier cake with six varieties of cake. The bottom tier was chocolate and sour cream with butter scotch cake followed by courgette cake and carrot cake for the middle tier and then a lemon drizzle and Victoria sponge on top of that. I followed the client’s design to the letter. Finished off with silk greenery so that the flavour of fresh herbs wouldn’t tinge the cake” (picture opposite). By the slice at The Fine Food Store and ‘Cake for the Weekend’ Courgette, carrot, parsnip or orange with almond cake (Gluten free), chocolate and sour cream, butterscotch, lemon drizzle or Victoria sponge are a sample variety but if you have tried something different to these in The Fine Food Store Lynne will be happy to bake it for you. Ombre cake, a deep hefty cake with different flavours of chocolate, chocolate caramel, caramel and vanilla layered with caramel sauce and covered in chocolate ganache.
54
Baby Gendre Cakes Lynne was asked to make a cake at the request of her client who was pregnant and hosting a family party at which the sex of her baby would be revealed. Lynne was passed an envelope and sworn to secrecy. “We had worked out a design for the cake but it was only when they cut the cake at the party that the couple found out if they were having a boy or a girl (the cake inside is either blue or pink).” The fondant icing on the outside was white with pink, blue and lemon polka dots. Lynne uses a natural paste for colouring. • Information regarding ‘Cake for the Weekend’ can be found at The Fine Food Store, 37 St Mary’s Street in Stamford. THE WINE BAR STAMFORD The Wine Bar came under new ownership only 8 weeks ago and it has been a whirlwind of activity ever since. We would like to thank everyone who has got merry with us so far, it has been brilliant to have such a wonderful reception.
O
ur goals and vision are clear: to create a friendly atmosphere where one is made to feel welcome and relaxed whilst enjoying fine wines, specialist spirits and proper cocktails! I’m sure you will recognize the ‘friendly’ faces pictured but we are Alex Way and Stephen Miskell. Stephen has been in the bar trade for a number of years and we dare you to order a cocktail he can’t make. With an excellent knowledge of wine, Stephen will be happy to recommend something other than your usual choice. Alex’s background is in property but he is quickly learning the ropes of running a bar and loving every minute of it - especially making ‘the best gin and tonic EVER’…. according to one happy customer. We aim to provide a venue to while away an evening whilst enjoying fine wines and nibbles, our food menu will also be expanding throughout the year. NEW: The only venue in Stamford to have a specialist gin menu, why not try a Little Bird, Botanist or Bloom all served with bespoke accompaniments? We will also be holding gin tasting evenings throughout the year so keep up to date with the latest news on our Facebook page ‘Wine Bar Stamford’. Open from 10am, 7 days a week serving superb coffee, breakfasts and sandwiches freshly prepared by Stamford Deli. Later on during the day we are happy to prepare a cheese or charcuterie platter to stave off hunger whilst enjoying some fabulous wine. We look forward to seeing you soon and don’t forget to ‘Like’ our Facebook page to keep up to date with special events throughout the year. • Open Sun-Thur 10am - 11pm Fri-Sat 10am - 12 midnight 10 St Paul’s Street, Stamford Tel: 01780 757 844 E : info@stamfordwinebar.co.uk www.stamfordwinebar.co.uk - twitter - @winebarstamford - facebook

EATING OUT
Tasting new wines and cheeses in Stamford! Laura Alcázar is a Spaniard studying English in Stamford, with a passion for food & drink
I
REALLY enjoy eating cheese and tasting new wines with pleasant conversation. I would like to become a wine expert, maybe working in the sector as a marketing manager, but meanwhile I’m improving my English language at the Stamford Academy and finding different restaurants and pubs in the town to go for a drink and trying new wines! One of my favourite places is The Wine Bar in St. Paul’s Street. Here you can find wines from different countries like Spain, Italy, France or Argentina. The price per bottle is quite affordable so you can share it with friends. Besides, you can taste a good cheese board with three or four pieces of cheese from the region combined with chutney. To be honest I thought chutney wouldn’t like me but I have to admit it’s delicious! The Wine Bar is situated in a very old building - it’s small but very cosy, with modern decoration and it holds a secret… – a lovely patio for spring and summer! The staff are very friendly too so it’s the perfect place to drink good wine! As well I have discovered the Stamford Cheese Cellar in St Mary’s St –It’s a charming
shop that I’m sure will appeal to everybody who loves cheese so much as me! You can buy many artisan cheeses. I bought here two of my favourite English cheeses, the Stilton and the Cheddar extra mature. I tasted them when I arrived in Stamford four months ago and I think they are fantastic. Their flavour is strong but they’re ideal to eat with red wine.
Also the Stamford Cheese Cellar offers hampers and gifts for special occasions so you can find here an original present for a foodie friend! They sell pâtés, jam, chutneys, crackers, homemade marmalades and wine too. What do you think about these two places? Have you been here before? If your answer is not you should already visit them; the first one with your partner or friends to drink good wine in a pleasant environment and the second one to buy some delicious cheeses and gourmet products for a special dinner at home!
Surprise Awaits at The Oat Hill in Market Harborough Having always either eaten or drunk in the bar area at the Oat Hill pub in Market Harborough, it was a first for Sosennah Every to venture into the restaurant area at the back
T
HE menu was varied and just reading over the interesting array of dishes got our taste buds ready for action. We were not disappointed with the Trio of English salads, which were served very simply and elegantly on a long dish and included chunks of mouth-watering Stilton on an iceberg leaf, a sliver of beetroot with goat’s cheese mousse and a grated celeriac and pear salad. We also tried the Herb crusted Carpaccio of beef which was perfectly pink and a homemade free range Scotch Egg with a tangy piccalilli sauce. Other starters included Antipasto cured meats and marinated vegetables as well as local cheeses. For around £6 a starter, they represented good value. Our mains were all generously portioned with individual delicate flavours and well presented. The roast breast of Gressingham duck came with wilted pak choi and a star anise and port jus, which was extremely tasty. The herb crusted Grasmere pork had some good marbling along the meat, but it was the roast rack of Joseph Morris lamb which was the night’s outright winner. The pink lamb was moist, succulent and just “melted in the mouth”. The rack was presented with a ‘hair of red Cress’ which added to the dish’s wow factor. We forced ourselves to try the dark chocolate and orange roulade for dessert which was luckily refreshingly light. With attentive service and an excellent wine list especially selected for the Oat Hill by local wine merchants Duncan Murray Wines, we could easily have made a long night of it! Here is quality food at sensible prices and definitely a number of notches above pub grub! Give it a try next time yiu are down Market Harborough way! • The Oat Hill, Public House & Dining Rooms, 31 Kettering Road, Market Harborough, Tel: 01858 462324, www.theoathill.co.uk STAMFORD LIVING FEBRUARY 2015

FLORENCE
here better to take in some warm spring sunshine than Florence, birthplace of the Renaissance and home to Michelangelo’s ‘David’ and the works of Botticelli & Giotto. Florence has inherited a rich cultural heritage and is perfect for a short break, and even today the Florentines and their city never fail to impress.
A must see is Michelangelo’s huge statue of David occupying pride of place in The Accademia Gallery, carved from a single block of marble. And Brunelleschi’s gravity defying Duomo which dominates the Florence skyline, together with the world famous Ponte Vecchio Bridge, the oldest in Florence which over the years has housed tanners, butchers, blacksmiths, and finally the goldsmith’s shops that still line it today. The Uffizi Gallery houses Italy’s most important collection of art, The Medici Collection, and is well worth a visit. City Tours are available from £36.00 per adult, a little touristy perhaps, but well worth the effort. Whilst in Florence sampling the local food & drink is a must; try Schiacciata, a type of Tuscan flatbread for a snack or light lunch with salami and Pecorino cheese accompanied by a glass of wine from the Chianti region. Try Gilli on Piazza della Republica ideal for an aperitif before heading off for dinner. The region is popular for its full-bodied red Chianti wine, although there are also many Tuscan white wines such as Vernaccia from nearby San Gimigano which are well worth sampling. Florence is a relatively small city and most of the hotels are within easy walking distance of the main sights and attractions. For stunning views we recommend you choose one of the hotels located on the banks of The River Arno. For a stylish hotel close to the historical centre consider The Unicorno or for a special occasion Oundle Travel recommend the Il Salviatano; this palatial fifteenth century villa offers stunning views over the city.

THE TIN PIGEONS ARE FLYING Georgie Fenn met up with Fraser, Douglas and George (sadly Tom was away) and got the latest news from Stamford’s most lovable band
F
OR those of you that are not from Stamford or have been living under a rock and don’t know The Tin Pigeons, here is a recap: The group formed in 2011 and since then they have established a reputation as one of the UK’s most exciting young contemporary folk bands! The Tin Pigeons is made up of George Norton on vocals and banjo and his brother Fraser on vocals, guitar and mouth organ with Tom Quemby on bass guitar and kick drum and last but not least Douglas Tawn on vocals and mandolin; the boys are all originally from Stamford School. At the time I was interviewing the boys they were gearing themselves up for a private recording session for their latest EP (alternative word for single – actually means extended play so can be anything from one song to say four). However, since this interview ‘All’s Spent’ is now available to buy on iTunes and to listen to on Spotify, so you lucky Stamfordians I suggest you give your post-Christmas ears a treat and have a listen! It looks like an exciting year ahead for The Tin Pigeons as they plan a nationwide tour hoping to do a gig ‘nearly every night and to just take every opportunity we can’! There is even talk that they may be hitting Paris and Madrid so watch out Europe! Surprisingly the boys have a varied taste in music, and young Tom is launching a successful career in drum and bass! Fraser’s heart is set on country music and Doug likes to listen to late 70s, 80s stuff including Gene Vincent – the boy has style. I was impressed to hear that on long journeys they are taking their voices very seriously by listening to Mrs Quemby’s (Tom’s mum) warm up for your vocals; as she is a speech therapist this has been really helpful to them and ensures when they arrive at the gig they can hit all the notes straight away. It really is raw talent that has created this band, they are all incredibly self-taught and busy writing their own songs. We spoke about how much more exciting the X-Factor would be if it was purely for musicians who wrote their own stuff! Fraser phrased it perfectly about the current music industry: ‘Music is less of an expression and more of a career and a way of making money’. It is so nice to see such passion and energy shining through this young band and I think it’s really exciting what they have to offer. Despite their incredible following, Tom, Fraser, Doug and George still can’t believe they have actual real fans that follow them – it just shows how humble they are despite being the most talked about band in our area. If you would like to get it touch visit their Facebook page which you can find by typing The Tin Pigeons into the search bar, they tell me that they love to connect to fans so send them a message if you have questions to ask or you would like to hire them for an event yourself! We all need to keep a look out for these guys in the future!

Wing & Rutland Water This is a splendid walk, its highlights being wide-ranging views over Rutland Water and three delightful Rutland villages
WALK DATA Distance: 6 Miles (10 kms) Height Change: 60 metres Typical time: 2.5 hours Map: Rutland Water Explorer 234 Parking: Top St, Wing Start & Finish: Wing Church Terrain: Rolling terrain, lots of up and down, but nothing severe Dog suitability: Moderate. Sheep and Nature Reserve, so discipline essential.
POINTS OF INTEREST Wing is a very pretty village. Its most notable feature is The Old Maze (on the Glaston Rd, directly opposite where you arrive on foot from Lyndon). More accurately known as a labyrinth, it measures around 14 metres in diameter and consists of a single grass path that winds and backtracks around in a circle before finally leading to the centre. This form of maze has been variously termed ‘Classical’, ‘Cretan’ or ‘Chartres’ and is popularly associated with the legend of Theseus and the Minotaur. It is thought to date from the medieval period - it is later recorded in the Leicester and Rutland Directory of 1846 which describes it as ‘an ancient maze, in which the rustics run at the parish feast’. The Lyndon Visitor Centre, on the edge of Rutland Water, very much merits a visit. It is the base for the Rutland Osprey project. Find out more at www. rutlandwater.org.uk Lyndon remains an Estate Village, as it has been for centuries, retaining much of its charm and rural character. It is surrounded by an agricultural estate extending to over 1000 acres.

BOOK EARLY FOR THIS PRODUCTION… Tuesday 3 March to Saturday 7 March, 7.45pm THEATRE: A Doll’s House First performed in 1879, ‘A Doll’s House’ proved to be one of the most controversial plays ever staged. It is the story of a marriage in which the dilemma faced by Nora, the wife and mother at the centre of the drama, provoked outrage in contemporary audiences. Today this finely observed and sensitive masterpiece is regarded as the first great naturalistic play, in which psychological realism took precedence over romantic idealism. Ibsen said at the time of writing, ‘A woman cannot be herself in modern society.’ It is for the audience to judge how far we might have come today. An amateur performance by Stamford Theatre’s acclaimed resident company, Shoestring Theatre. Stamford Theatre Tickets £10/£8 Tel: 01780 763203 - www.stamfordartscentre.com

STAMFORD PEOPLE
DavidPalmer; Auctioneer Words & Photography: Harjit Gammon
L
IKE many inveterate sale goers I’ve watched and enjoyed seeing David Palmer in action at Batemans auctioneers for many years. First, at The Corn Exchange on Broad Street and latterly at Batemans’ premises at Ryhall Road. A performer rather than a mere acceptor of bids, it is a pleasure to see him in action. Indeed many a bidder has been coaxed into taking part even when they weren’t entirely convinced they needed or wanted the item in question such is his power to variously cajole, provoke and charm. In stark contrast to his saleroom persona, a slick, fast talking, wise-cracking, confident, loud waistcoat-wearing player, in person he cuts a rather more conservative, reserved figure, nervously anticipatory and altogether quieter and more understated on first meeting. Smartly dressed, sans loud waistcoat, he sat slightly ill at ease clutching the lead of a tiny little terrier (Ruby), his wife and daughters’ he quickly tells me when we meet, for whom he is responsible in his role as house husband. Ruby, it emerges, accompanies him to all his sales but ironically is petrified at the sound of the gavel. As we talk it is evident that David is an immensely likeable individual, brimming with genuine energy and enthusiasm, doing something which he very clearly enjoys. A seemingly effortless, natural talent is in reality in great part the product of an on-going process of continual refinement, modification and honing of his art. Saved from a potentially pedestrian life as a technical illustrator by a fortuitous remark, by the American husband of a neighbour, who commented, “If you don’t change you’ll probably grow to like it (three dimensional drawing of machinery)”, David says he thought “how horrible is that” and promptly looked about for something more engaging and satisfying. After a self-initiated start, with no knowledge whatsoever of antiques, “I pestered the sale room in Newmarket (from where he hails) until they finally gave in and gave me a job as a porter”, he recounts, he found the personal enjoyment he sought rather than just a job. A steep learning curve followed. He recalls going out to clear properties and then progressing to valuing items for horse trainers in the surrounding area, a task which he tells me was inevitably accompanied by an obligatory glass of whisky regardless of the time of day. Along the way he ventured into taking the rostrum and there found his forte. From his early days selling general household items and antiques (which he still continues to do, for salerooms up and down the country) he has added the whole gamut of chattels, goods and property, selling everything from aeroplanes to houses to motorcars. He has presided at bespoke sales; all Jewish and all Arab sales, charity sales and internet only sales - including one for Pop memorabilia at London’s Hard Rock Cafe. A few days after we met David was off to conduct a piano sale in Manchester. He observes that auctioneering has changed over the years, with people wanting to be entertained now at sales. Humour is key it seems. For David, who sees it as a way of life rather than a job, trips to Covent Garden to see how street performers draw a crowd in or watching a comedian in action is just a natural extension of perfecting and adapting his own performance to the varied sales he oversees. His commitment is all consuming it seems. “I buy something every day. I haven’t had a
70
good day unless I buy something,” he says. And to complete the circle he recently set out a stall at an antiques fair for the experience, discovering just how ill prepared he really was. To the change in style of auctioneering, can be added the advent of first, telephone bidding and then, internet bidding. Both requiring yet more adeptness in juggling the room with telephone and on-line bidders, and accommodating the swift bidders with the dwellers. On occasion this has resulted in bidding continuing even after the hammer has come down he says, as bids ping on-line when he momentarily looks away. His schedule is punishing on sale days with on average eight hundred lots at general & antiques sales rising to over a thousand at football memorabilia sales where the pace is often much faster. Piano sales such as those mentioned earlier are speedier still with an astounding lot per minute. With around 45-50 talks and 160 auctions in the last year it is a wonder that he has the time for his house husband duties doing the washing! CORRECTION In last month’s article on Stamford Welland Academy, we incorrectly stated that Chris Beckett is Headmaster. He is in fact on the leadership team at the school and is supporting the Principal, Mr Anthony Partington.
