Being British So here we are in July, perched precariously between the happy memories of The Diamond Jubilee and anticipation of the Olympic Games, wondering what we’ve done to deserve so much national celebration compressed into such a short space of time. And we seem to be getting a picture of Britishness that is truly uplifting in these times of political and economic uncertainty. A nation that knows how to celebrate and give thanks to its public servants. A reminder of the huge benefits of helping others and a wish to do more ourselves. A reminder of the humanity amidst the pomp – coping with poor weather and the illness of a partner. The special feeling when the Queen drove through Stamford of monarchy and informality intermingled. She had her window wound down, she was one’s granny as well as The Queen. And shortly the Olympic torch will be passing through town along the same street as the Queen travelled, and we will be starting the final build up to the Olympics. I am looking forward to the opening ceremony and the planned depiction of the British countryside. Enjoy your summer breaks.

HOME & GARDEN

Art and Antiques Trail Stamford has long been known for its antique shops and was a magnet for collectors in the Sixties. Today it is still a popular hunting ground, especially with its location en route to the big fairs in Newark and Swinderby. The town is also home to an enviable collection of art galleries and secondhand bookshops. Alysia Anderson takes a tour St Martin’s Antiques Centre 23a High St St Martin’s, Stamford PE9 2LF Tel: 01780 481158 www.st-martins-antiques.co.uk With more than 70 dealers represented, Peter Light’s long-established centre stocks Georgian, Victorian and Edwardian furniture alongside items from the Arts & Crafts and Art Deco movements. You’ll also find specialists in jewellery, clocks and watches, military books, toys, pictures and prints, as well as a vintage clothing room and copper, porcelain, brass and silver items. Peter and his team are always on hand to advise, purchase items or sell them for you on commission. The centre also offers an email search facility and privileges for members.

Robert Fogell 23 High St St Martin’s, PE9 2LF Tel: 01780 762099; www.robfogell.co.uk This stylish gallery features not only paintings but also ceramics, glassware, jewellery and sculpture by British Modern and contemporary artists such as Ned Cartwright, Peter Hayes and Debbie George. Robert himself is a sculptor and conservator. With wife Diane he opened the gallery six years ago and is a keen supporter of local talent, for example Crispin Heesom and Gillian Durno. Purchase and commissioning schemes are available. Robert also runs educational and specialist workshops in carving, clay modelling and plaster construction at his Burghley House studio.

Claire Langley Antiques 7 High St St Martin’s, PE9 2LF Tel: 01780 752555; www.clairelangleyantiques.co.uk Claire, who shares the space with fellow antique dealer Robin Cox, offers an eclectic mix of items from various periods, including furniture, mirrors, lighting and decorative pieces. She says: “We strongly believe that classic 20th century pieces can sit happily alongside period antiques, creating a more individual style.” Each spring, the shop holds a sale specialising in garden and decorative antiques, a great way to add character to your outdoor space, whether with a stone lion, antique bench or, Westminster style, a painted duck house. For the first time this year, the shop held an art exhibition featuring four local artists. “Feedback was very positive so we plan to make it a regular event.”

The shop also provides services in restoration, upholstery and antique searches.

Spencer Coleman 5/9 George Mews, PE9 2LB Tel: 01780 480800; www.spencercolemanfineart.com Tucked away behind The George Hotel, the gallery is one of a trio established by Spencer Coleman. A professional artist since 1980, Spencer sells his own paintings alongside an extensive collection of fine art, modern sculpture and glassware. He says: “We can source virtually any artist from around the world and we also take commissions.” The gallery offers a wedding service whereby guests can contribute towards a piece of art chosen by the couple. Alternatively, artist Karen Wallis Coleman can be commissioned to paint a bridal portrait. For serious art investors, the gallery has a private buyers’ club with member discounts.

London & Stamford Valuation and Buying Centre St Mary’s St, PE9 2DE Tel: 01780 765611 Housed in the beautiful old building on Town Bridge, the centre is owned by the London

& Stamford property company. The centre purchases and values jewellery, watches, silver and antiques, so a hunt round your attic might be in order. You can also pick up interesting antiques, decorative arts, garden statuary and other collectibles.

St Mary’s Books 9 St Mary’s Hill, PE9 2DP Tel: 01780 763033; www.stmarysbooks.com Established in Leicester by the late Godfrey Tyers and his wife Patricia, this emporium of secondhand and antiquarian books moved to Stamford in 1987. The collection has grown to 50,000 and the shop is now run by Patricia, daughter Naomi and son Marcus. The modest façade belies the six rooms within, stacked with tomes on topics as diverse as beekeeping, cricket, music and motoring. Naomi says “Our fields of interest are very wide and we welcome quality books on any subject.” The shop has a strong children’s section as well as first editions and signed copies by writers such as Jane Austen, John Betjeman and John Clare. It’s easy to while away an afternoon here, not only perusing books but also the maps, prints and taxidermy.

St Paul’s St Bookshop 7 St Pauls St, PE9 2BE Tel: 01780 482748; www.stpaulsstreetbookshop.co.uk Beneath the rafters of this quaint shop are secondhand and antiquarian books, particularly on Lincolnshire, the Fens and motoring, although a wide range of subjects is covered. Owner Jim Blessett, who has run the shop for 17 years, is always interested in purchasing books, new and old, from single volumes to full collections.

Stuart Porter Antiques & Craft Centre 15 Broad St, PE9 1PG Tel: 01780 766214; www.stuartporterantiques.com When Stuart was 16 he asked his father to lend him £250 to buy some Japanese scrolls. He later sold them to Sothebys for £20,000 and was hooked from then on. He opened his own centre last year and now has around 70 dealers. Stuart says “We specialise in Georgian furniture but also have costume jewellery, pictures and china. We buy gold and silver and have a free valuation surgery every Thursday. You can bring along antiques not necessarily to sell but to gain some history.” The centre is also home to Lynsey’s Social Stitching, Paul Mills Picture Framing, Brassnecks Restorations and a tearoom.

Stamford Arts Centre

Gallery Stamford

27 St Mary’s St, PE9 2DL Tel: 01780 763203; www.stamfordartscentre.com This light-filled space displays paintings, photography, pottery and sculpture by both amateur and professional artists. House Manager Emma Oglesbee explained: “There are around 20 exhibitions a year, including two by The Welland Valley Arts Society, Stamford College’s graduate show and Stamford Fairtrade in October. In August the students from our art classes showcase their work.” Until 16 July the centre is hosting the annual exhibition of the Guild of Fine Artists, whose members mostly hail from the East of England.

3 Maiden Lane, PE9 2AZ Tel: 01780 753737; www.gallerystamford.co.uk Located here since 1997, Gallery Stamford offers a selection of limited edition prints by popular artists such as Sam Toft, Quentin Blake, Sue Howells and Becky Mair. Owner Kate Marshall says: “We frequently have sporting and country pursuit prints by artists such as Mick Cawston and Paul Doyle and also offer original works by local artists, many of whom depict Stamford and environs in individual and insightful ways”. The gallery also offers a bespoke framing service for tapestries, memorabilia and more.

Stamford Artists Gallery

Christopher Pye Antiques

10 Maiden Lane, PE9 2AZ Tel: 01780 764074 Peer into the tiny Stamford Artists Gallery and you’re likely to spy the bearded figure of owner John Fountain sitting reading. With wife Carole, John opened the gallery in 1980 with the aim of promoting local artists. Many of his own works, principally portraits, are also for sale. As would be expected, there are many scenes of local life to be found here, so it’s a great place to find a unique souvenir of Stamford and its environs. John is also a skilled picture framer and restorer.

3 St Leonard’s St, PE9 2HU Tel: 07919 168203; www.facebook.com/ChristopherPyeAntiques Christopher, who also restores houses, opened this little shop in April as an addition to his showroom in Newark. He tends to buy whatever catches his eye. “The rent is low here so I don’t charge high prices. I just enjoy finding things for people.” The day I popped in, there were some lovely miniature wooden chests and a 19thcentury weathervane.

6 Red Lion Square, PE9 2AJ Tel: 01780 754166; www.dawsonofstamford.com Family jewellers in Stamford for 30 years, Dawson sells gold, silver and antique jewellery and watches as well as antique furniture and decorative items. John Dawson said: “We source our pieces from throughout Europe, giving us a diverse range of stock, ranging from early Flemish wood carvings to fine English furniture and antique French carriage clocks.” A skilled goldsmith and diamond mounter, John specialises in the restoration of antique jewellery and handmade commission pieces. A second shop, selling contemporary jewellery and watches, is opening on St Mary’s St.

Batemans The Saleroom Ryhall Road PE9 1XF 01780 766466; www.batemans-auctions.co.uk These popular auction rooms hold sales of fine art, antiques and collectables on the first Saturday of each month. HEALTH AND BEAUTY

LOOKING GORGEOUS FOR THE BEACH

Genevieve Potter provides the inside track on all of the latest treatments, products and fitness fixes to help you look your gorgeous best on the beach this summer

MY TOP TIPS FOR SUMMER BEAUTY

Hitting the beach fully made-up is not a good look, so pare things down. Wellgroomed brows, a little strategically placed concealer and some waterproof mascara are all you need – if you are very pale a tiny dot of cream blusher will perk you up as your tan develops. A natural tan should be developed safely and slowly over the course of a couple of weeks, but for a quick fix, invest in a professional spray tan, like the new Karora at Essence of Beauty, the Bali Sun at Body Matters, or for a great result at a bargain price, Aromatica (opposite the George) are offering the famous Fake Bake spray tan for just £15 throughout July (call 01780 753443 to book). Hydration is key to achieving dewy summer skin – I like Dermalogica’s skin-hydrating masque (available from Stamford Beauty on Silver Lane), a clear miracle worker which can be left on as an overnight treatment (I also use it instead of moisturiser on my face and neck before travelling, so that I arrive looking freshfaced). Whilst I’d always recommend investing in some good quality sun cream with an SPF of at least 30, go back to basics and consider how your diet affects your skin – load up on water-rich vegetables and fruit – carrots and tomatoes also act as brilliant skin protectors to stop burning and encourage a safe, natural glow. • For more fashion and beauty tips, visit my blog www.ihaventgotathingtowear/ blog

SHAPE UP WITH PILATES

Pilates is renowned for encouraging good posture, as well as lengthening and strengthening the muscles. This makes it the perfect method for achieving a leaner bikini silhouette when combined with cardio-vascular exercise and of course, eating well and staying hydrated. I recently had the pleasure of trying a one-to-one Pilates lesson with Louise Gill, who also runs group Pilates and Zumba classes in the Stamford area. The hour-long session was brilliant and very worthwhile, allowing me to focus on the technique involved in each Pilates move. Louise identified that I needed to concentrate on strengthening my lower back which, although flexible, has a slight curve called lordosis, (common in women who have had children) and my upper back, which is very tight and needed to be opened up and relaxed. She introduced exercises designed to address these areas and talked me through each move in detail, so I really got the most out of the session. I’ll certainly be treating myself to more one-to-one lessons; for about the price of a spray tan I left my lesson walking taller, with my tummy and back muscles feeling fully engaged! • For more details contact Louise on 07827 665916 email louise@stamfordpilates.co.uk And for those of you who relish a fun and energetic summer work-out, fitness instructor Judith Ewing has recently launched the ‘Fame’ dance workout, every Tuesday at 7.15 at Oakham Church of England Primary School, Burley Road, Oakham. The class costs £5, there’s no experience required and no need to book. Visit www.judithewingfitness.com for full details.

THE PERFECT QUICK-FIX SUMMER MAKE-UP

Mineral make-up provides the perfect base for summer as it is skin-enhancing, non-clogging and provides a layer of natural sun protection. BareMinerals have pioneered a new range of ‘ready’ make-up, which comes in a compact that’s perfect for your beach bag, looks like a pressed powder but feels like a cream, giving smooth and long lasting coverage with no parabens or harsh chemicals. The range contains antioxidant ingredients including borage oil and cucumber. Body Care are currently exclusive stockists of bareMinerals ‘ready’ in this area – prices from £19. • Body Care, 7 Ironmonger Street, Stamford PE9 1PL - Tel: 01780 480777 www.bodycare-online.com

CHILLED OUT AND GLAMOROUS IN JUST ONE APPOINTMENT

Essence of Beauty in Stamford specialises in Darphin Institute products and treatments. Darphin is a Parisian skincare line that blends the latest advances in skincare ingredients and technology with plants and pure essential oils. I recently experienced Darphin for the first time, enjoying a customised facial at Essence of Beauty. It was an hour which made a real difference to my skin and left me feeling incredibly pampered and relaxed. Unusually the treatment starts with a foot massage; the products smelt utterly divine and, thanks to Lauren’s skill and expertise, my skin was left noticeably smoother and glowing. I’m a convert!

STAMFORD LIVING OFFER For a limited time, the salon is offering a “Top to Toe Treat”; available between 2nd and 13th July inclusive, which comprises a Darphin sensorial reviver facial, back, neck and shoulder massage, custom manicure and custom pedicure including a Leighton Denny polish of your choice, all for £85 when you book mentioning Stamford Living (and for the first two lucky Stamford Living readers to book, there is a Darphin gift bag awaiting you, worth £45). In addition, there are some fantastic new products to try at Essence of Beauty this month including the new Darphin nourishing and firming velvet cream (£39), which is enriched with organic shea butter and sweet almond and provides exceptional firming to help you look your best on the beach, boosting skin’s natural collagen production, preserving elastin and maintaining the skin’s natural support structure. The salon now also offers totally organic, paraben-free sun care and spray tan products by Karora, with ground-breaking natural formulas which deliver flawless colour and long-lasting results. The Karora range of products starts from £13.50 and a Karora spray tan at Essence of Beauty costs £20. • Essence of Beauty, 15 St Mary’s Street, Stamford PE9 2DF Tel: 01780 763564

LOSE THOSE LAST FEW STUBBORN INCHES

Equilibrium are specialists in the classic treatment by Universal Contour, a wrap that combines mineral rich clay and specialist body wrapping techniques which detoxify the body whilst actively compressing soft tissue. This is a tried and tested way of firming the body and losing inches before sporting your bikini or swimming trunks (there is a money back guarantee if you don’t lose at least six inches in two hours, with some clients losing up to 14 inches in total).

GET HAPPY FEET

Before you even think about a pedicure, it’s well worth booking a 30-minute session at the foot experts, Toe Tally, which will eradicate hard, cracked or painful skin to leave your feet soft and energised. After using a motorised emery board and gently planing the skin, Julia of Toe Tally will apply emollient products containing essential oils of lavender, pine and rosemary to penetrate the skin, leaving your feet feeling refreshed and fantastically light. A session costs £37 including a brief medical consultation (that’s less than a new pair of sandals) and for the month of July, when you mention Stamford Living at the time of booking you will receive a free foot file to help you keep up the good work at home. • Toe-Tally Clinic, 10 High Street, St Martin’s, Stamford PE9 2LF (opposite The George Hotel) Tel: 01780 766991

ACHIEVE THE RADIANT SKIN YOU’VE ALWAYS DREAMED OF

The summer throws your skin in to sharp focus. As well as the obvious need to protect your complexion against UVA and UVB rays, the rise in temperature can take its toll causing breakouts and increasing pigmentation. Environ, available at The Advanced Skin Clinic is a highly advanced, vitamin-rich range which is manufactured and packaged under stringent conditions to give a clearer, more even-toned complexion; as well as defending your skin against the sun and free radicals.

FASHION

IN THE SWIM

By Sally Stillingfleet

P

reparing to bare all for suntanning and swimming (I wish!) is a daunting experience for most if not all of us. Giselle Brannan takes the sting out of summer with her fabulous selection of swimwear and accessories and reveals her new premises in Oakham to spread her knowledge and helpful fitting service. Giselle gets ready to dive in! Chameleon has always stocked a good range of swimwear and is now opening up in Oakham’s Mill Street. New brands have been introduced into the mix such as Roidal and Nicole Olivier, as well as brands such as Charmline, Beachlife and Sea Folly. Super fabric innovation of late has been the biggest breakthough. Stretchy but soft fabrics can now retain their shape and enable styles to have greater support in key areas (vital for the larger bust sizes) The higher prices might be off-putting but these pieces will last and last, definitely an area not to scimp on! “Fabric innovation has enabled swimwear styles to do things they couldn’t do 10 years ago, as I have always championed the bigger bust. Technology has adapted to make garments lighter, more stretchy and stronger.” Giselle explained.

Lindsay Phillips flip flops from Sly ring the changes. Available in 6 stunning colours and you can change the snaps with over 20 to choose from. Change your look not your shoe! £18.99

Toms - £34 - £37, striped espadrilles £35 both from Cavells

RIGHT: Roidal is the top Spanish luxury swimwear brand. It has hidden support and beautiful soft drapey fabric , this style goes up to an E cup, can also be worn with over with fabulous pareos. Prices from £175 for the suit and £85 for the pareo Turquoise bikini by Nicole Olivier and has B/C cups with little skirt pants. There is an amazing kaftan and dress/skirt which goes over these in a vibrant animal print. £159 for the bikini.

Moontide retro floral print bikini, also available as a swimsuit (not shown) £76 for the bikini

Gorgeous laminated original art beach bag also from Cavells £276

The One Off Chair Company The One Off Chair Company is a new and exciting partnership between Stamford antique dealer Claire Langley, and Medbourne-based upholsterer Alan Watson, of Weavewood and Watson . Both have a passion for chairs and good design; and after many years of working together, have decided to join forces and pool their collective knowledge. Their aim is to offer a diverse and individual range of chairs and sofas – from 18th century Georgian classics, right through to 60s/ 70s retro, and the smooth contemporary lines of today. All pieces are restored and upholstered to the highest quality, using only traditional materials and time trusted methods. A bespoke service is also available, made to the same exacting standards . Whilst some pieces are fully upholstered, others will be available in an unupholstered state – stripped back to the basic frame – so customers can choose their own fabrics . Claire and Alan are able to supply fabrics from a wide range of designers, and have pattern books from Colefax and Fowler, Nina Campbell, Romo and Designers Guild, to name but a few. • Why not view their stock on-line at www.theoneoffchaircompany.com, or visit Claire’s antique shop opposite The George Hotel in Stamford. The rest of their stock is in their store in Scotgate, Stamford, where Claire and Alan will be more than happy to meet customers by appointment.

DELCOR Creators of fine bespoke furniture for over 40 years are now opening in Stamford

I

f you thought the art of creating beautiful furniture went out with Chippendale – think again. In the heart of the north-east you’ll find one of the country’s most treasured skills alive, thriving and growing. Delcor have been manufacturing stylish bespoke furniture since the mid 1960s from their showroom and manufacturing headquarters at Seaton Delaval near the Northumberland coast. Under the direction of Rick Petini, Owner and Managing Director, skilled craftsmen continue to create high quality furniture using the finest sustainable woods and fabrics. Everything comes out of Seaton Delaval – the ideas, the designs, the manufacture, upholstery and covering, delivery and after-care. Customers can even leave their furniture in storage until ready to enjoy – for no extra charge! And now Delcor has opened a 4,800 sq ft store at Bath Row, Stamford (in the former Mark Elliot building) to satisfy growing market demand for their unique products. The opening follows on from the success of Delcor’s factory and showroom at Seaton Delaval, Northumberland, King’s Road Chelsea and their franchise store in Altrincham, Cheshire. Delcor also opened a 2,000 sq ft store in Harrogate in June this year. Delcor’s main focus is on settees, divans and chairs in a range of designs and coverings. Every piece of furniture is bespoke so clients can adapt the design to suit their particular requirement; and furniture can also be assembled in the home thus avoiding any access problems. Delcor ensure their designs will satisfy all types of home and tastes - from period Georgian elegance to 21st century minimalist - and from the large family house to bachelor pad. Traditionalists might prefer

the ‘Chesterfield’ design or the ‘Victorian’ with rounded back and arms. Those looking for something more contemporary will love the ‘Milan’ with tapered legs, or the super cool ‘Prezzo’. And for sheer indulgence you can’t beat the ‘Soho’ – a clever combination of settee and divan so you can sit or stretch out at your leisure! And with a choice of over 1,000 fabrics in a range of patterns and plains – getting something to suit the mood of your room won’t present any problems. Key to Delcor’s success is the drive and passion of Owner and MD Rick Petini. Rick was born in Nottingham to Italian parents and trained and qualified as an upholsterer and has many years design and upholstery experience. He joined Delcor as design director over 10 years ago and when the company came up for sale two years ago, he loved it so much – he bought it. Rick’s passion is to build the best sofas available and to address solutions of size, depth and appearance which many Delcor clients require. His mission is to build and sell furniture that is British, hand-crafted and stylish. The company’s ethos is not to compromise on quality even in an unstable economic climate and continues to provide “investment” pieces that are built to last. Since buying the Delcor business two years

ago, Rick Petini, owner and MD is delighted to report that business is thriving: “It appears that despite economic uncertainty, customers are still looking for quality furniture that lasts and Delcor is currently outperforming last year with strong sales from both Seaton Delaval and London. Customers like the fact that our products are manufactured in Britain and they know they are buying something beautiful that is guaranteed to last 20 years and more”. Rick is delighted to be opening a stylish new store in Stamford: “It’s a beautiful county town with many fine historic houses and is within easy reach of larger conurbations such as Peterborough. We’re confident that our beautiful ‘British-made’ bespoke furniture will attract property owners both locally and regionally and we look forward to welcoming our new customers”. he setting here is from a Gothic novel, a long avenue of lime trees leads to imposing Wing Hall, built by the inventors of velvet dyeing in the Victorian era. Screened from the villa-like construction by tall trees and dense rhododendrons, tents and caravans pitch up in the nearby fields. On hand is the excellent on-site farm shop, which sells gourmet items including Hambleton Bakery bread and great rhubarb crumble ice cream and daily papers as well as the basics. If cooking seems too much like hard work, the pretty verandah cafe-bar is a good option for breakfast and lunch, and also provides a full menu for dinner, serving local food. Outdoor seating on the terrace overlooking the lawns makes it an idyllic spot on warm days.

While the farm shop and verandah cafe-bar add a dash of class, it’s a good option for campers who like to fish – there’s coarse fishing on site in two pools stocked with carp, bream and tench, whilst fly-fishing is available at Rutland Water. Located just a mile away, Rutland Water is also good for sailing and bird-watching, and it is encircled by a 25-mile cycle and walking track, bike rental is also available on site.

PERSPECTIVES

Richard Barry visits a Victorian masterpiece

“Gothic and Cathedral-like, not Workhouse-like” T

his was the design condition insisted on by the Duke of St Albans before he agreed to the building of the Bestwood pumping station on his land. The owner of Papplewick Hall, the Right Honourable Andrew Montagu, insisted that the pumping station to be built on his land should be even grander. As a result, we have two Victorian masterpieces barely fifty miles from Stamford, providing us with an inspirational day out. Bestwood has been converted into a health spa and restaurant (of which, more later). But Papplewick is the jewel – it has been beautifully restored as one of the few remaining fully functional Victorian water pumping stations. (That said, Leicester also has an operational pumping station but it’s of a slightly later period and pumped sewage not water). Backstory During the nineteenth century there was a great improvement in the health and life expectancy of many Britons. It is rather irritating to hear the medical profession claiming credit for this. Truth be known, it had little to do with medics but was largely due to civil engineers. The two great heroes of the East Midlands were Hawkesley and Tarbotton, civil engineers responsible for Nottingham’s water supply and much else. Until the 1830s most of its drinking water came from the heavily sewage-polluted river Leem. Almost 300 townspeople died from cholera in the 1832 outbreak. Soon after that, Hawkesley changed the town’s water supply from the river to a deep well tapping the underlying Bunter sandstone aquifer. When cholera struck many of the same areas of the country with even greater virulence in 1848, Nottingham escaped almost untouched. Local authorities enquired “whether any causes can be assigned for the exemption?” The engineers knew the answer. As the town grew in to a city (53,000 in 1835 to 217,000 in 1881) more Bunter sandstone wells were needed. To avoid local depletion of the aquifer beneath the city centre, new wells were located along the sandstone outcrop to the north. The first new pumping station was built at Bestwood in 1871 and the second at Papplewick in 1884. Papplewick The picture shows the main pump house. Through the trees on the left you can see the boiler house and chimney. In front is the cooling pond – a million miles from an industrial cooling pond of today, more like an elegant corner of Chatsworth. This is a recurrent theme – the sheer

grandeur of the concept – inside and out – and the flamboyant disregard for penny-pinching. The splendid front door could only be used by Directors of the water company, and municipal grandees, everyone else entering by side doors. Then, as now, executives had a keen awareness of status. The pump house contains two enormous beam engines designed by James Watt and made by his company (Watt & Bolton) in 1884. You have to climb three floors to see the whole beautiful machine. But it’s the exquisite details that fill one with awe. What truly remarkable people these Victorians were. Loyal to the Duke’s wishes, the pump house has stained glass windows throughout, and the structural beams (see picture) are magnificently decorated – all this in a building that was never intended for public view! Each day the two beam engines lifted 13,000 tons of water from the underlying sandstone aquifer up to the Papplewick storage reservoir, constructed on a nearby hill. The energy to do this was provided by six boilers, burning six tons of coal a day. The pump house and boiler room are impressive, but it’s the storage reservoir that leaves one awestruck. Call me fanciful, but you will have to travel the breadth of Europe, from the Cisterns of Istanbul to the Mosque in Cordoba, to see such impressive vaulting. The picture shows a small section of the reservoir – the vaulting retreating into the darkness in every direction. From the reservoir the water flowed under gravity down to the centre of Nottingham. Papplewick operates ‘in steam’ eight times a year. The next occasions are 14/15 July and 26/27 August from 11am to 5pm. It is also open for nonworking display every Sunday from 11am to 1pm but without visits to the reservoir. Details and prices are available on 0115 963 2938. Lunch The Lakeside restaurant in the former Bestwood pumping station is about three miles away. None of the equipment remains, but the restored building and cooling pond can be admired. The restaurant serves a perfectly acceptable two course lunch for £15.95 (0115 967 1444) • To get to Papplewick: A1 to Newark. A46 towards Leicester. A617 towards Mansfield. Take A614 towards Nottingham for 4.5 miles. Signpost on right. Post code NG15 9AJ STAMFORD LIVING july 2012

SPOTLIGHT ON... AUSTRALIA

A

ustralia is vast, stretching from north to south nearly 2,000 miles. This stunning country features three climates, the Tropic of Capricorn at its centre, three time zones, and many native plants and wildlife found nowhere else in the world. For indulgence and luxury, try the coastal resorts on the eastern seaboard. Both Sydney and Melbourne are two vibrant state capitals and both make perfect bases for exploration. From Sydney you can explore the historic rocks and Circular Harbour, join concert-goers in the iconic Opera House, explore the Blue Mountains and taste wine in the stunning Hunter Valley. From Melbourne you could start your day floating gently over the Yarra Valley in a hot air balloon with breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains, and end your day by choosing to eat in one of Melbourne’s many restaurants. Queensland stretches up to the tropics, where hydrofoils from Cairns and Port Douglas take you to snorkel or dive amongst the marine life on the Great Barrier Reef. The must see northern rainforests – Mossman Gorge in the World Heritage listed Daintree National Park and the area around Kuranda – are easily reached from Cairns and Port Douglas. With the size and diversity of this wonderful country, planning your perfect holiday to Australia may seem daunting. Oundle Travel are a designated Aussie Specialist for 2012/13 as recommended by the Australian Tourist Board and have extensive personal knowledge of tailor made itineraries to both Australia & New Zealand. • For more information and advice please contact Oundle Travel on 01832 273600 www.oundletravel.co.uk

A Rural Muse wins gold at Chelsea Flower Show Stamford-based garden designer Adam Frost and sponsor Lands’ End are celebrating a second year of gold-medal success at Chelsea Flower Show. Adam won a highly coveted gold medal for his Main Avenue show garden. Adam already has three Chelsea golds to his name but this is the first he has received for a large-scale show garden. Adam said: “I’m overwhelmed. Chelsea is the biggest event of the gardening calendar and to win gold for a show garden is about as good as it gets. It has been a really tough year; first with the drought and then the cold spring. Work on the garden went right down to the wire but it’s all been worth it now.” Stamford-based garden designer Adam Frost has followed up on his Chelsea Flower Show success with another RHS gold medal, this time at Gardeners’ World Live in Birmingham.

His garden, Childhood Memories, also won best in show for Adam, and his sponsors Honda. The garden is dedicated to the children’s hospice charity Greenfingers and draws heavily on Adam’s own memories of growing up and time spent on his grandfather’s allotment. A tent for outdoor sleepovers and a campfire to cook sausages over form the main focal points, while raised beds filled with logs offer a home for creepy crawlies and a dipping pond presents a haven for young naturalists.

R

obert Loomes is on to his 5th limited edition British-built wristwatch in four years, and was recently awarded the “Made in Britain” marque, the only English watch making firm to have achieved this milestone. His latest watch, the Black Dial Copper watch (above) has come as a result of feedback from his previous customers. “Why not create a dress watch,” they asked; and this is exactly what he has done. The watch will sell at £940; it is a limited edition of 100, and compares well price-wise with any comparable brands. But it is its looks that set it apart, with a copper casing that ages beautifully and a black face. It is very distinctive and unusual. Previous customers of Robert’s watches have come both from the immediate region and further afield. An American visiting London on business came all the way up to Stamford to buy one. It is the craftsmanship of the watches combined with their unique English origin that makes them so appealing. And what is behind the craftsmanship? “In a nutshell,” says Robert “attention to detail. There are no shortcuts in watch making, everything has to be of the best quality, and I have to persuade numerous suppliers to work in limited numbers to the highest quality standards.” Local MP Nick Boles recently paid them a visit. He said how he was “absurdly proud” of what the firm has achieved and that it seemed “a very fitting business for Stamford, with its tradition of craft and industry”. Nick also offered to nominate Robert Loomes’ watches for the “Made by Britain” project. The project was devised jointly by the Associate Parliamentary Manufacturing Group and the 1851 Commission to highlight the best in modern British manufacturing and engineering. • Robert Loomes & Co. 4 St Mary’s Hill, Stamford, PE9 2DW Tel: 01780 481319 www.robertloomes.com STAMFORD LIVING JULY 2012

SEAN’S KITCHEN CONFIDENTIAL

Summer garden party favourites

Three long drinks recipes. By Sean Hope, head chef at the Olive Branch, Clipsham

T

his issue, just for once I’m moving away from food and focusing on my other favourite topic – drink! At our sister pubs, The Olive Branch and Red Lion Inn (Stathern, Leicestershire), we have developed a range of seasonal country cocktails – including Hendrick’s gin with cucumber and elderflower; vodka and cream soda with fresh strawberries; and our special Pimm’s with extra gin and marinated red fruits. Here are three long drinks perfect for summer.

Red Lion Pimm’s pu nch • 1 bottle Pimm’s • 1/4 bottle gin • 100ml cassis • 100ml grenadine • Lemonade • Ginger ale Mix ingredients. Add fresh apple strawberries, raspberries. Steep in kilner jar/s for 3-4 days. Remove and bottle. To serve, pour punch into an ice-laden glass and top up with lemonade and ginger ale. Garnish with mint, cucumber and fruit.

Real le monade

• 100ml sugar syrup • Lemon zest • 100ml freshly squeezed lemon and lime juice • Soda water To make sugar syrup, add equal quantities of caster sugar and water to a pan and heat until dissolved. Allow to cool. Then fill a half-pint tumbler with ice and add syrup. Add lemon zest and freshly squeezed lemon and lime juice. Top up with soda water and garnish with lemon. Easy.

Strawberries & crea m

• 50ml strawberry vodka • Ice • Cream soda • Chopped strawberries To make strawberry vodka, place a punnet or so of washed, quartered strawberries in a clean Mason jar and add a bottle of vodka. After 24-48 hours, the colour will have drained from the fruit. At this point your vodka is ready. Now pour 50ml of strawberry vodka over ice into a long glass. Top up with cream soda, before adding fresh chopped strawberries and mint leaves. Decorate with a vanilla pod.

Did you know? We’ve now been at the Red Lion Inn at Stathern for 10 years – unbelievable! To mark the anniversary, we’ve refreshed the bar and plans are afoot to refurbish the dining room.

See my cookery demonstrations As usual, I’m running a series of cooking demos throughout the year at both the Red Lion Inn and Olive Branch. Simply Thierry

Thierry Daugeron is a Chef for all occasions, as Nicholas Rudd-Jones discovered

T

hierry Daugeron has become Stamford’s adopted ‘French chef’- with his thick French accent, bonhomie and superb culinary skills, he’s a great asset to the town and is often to be found helping out at shows or giving cookery demonstrations Simply Thierry Signature Events Thierry’s most significant business is catering for special events, be they weddings, birthday parties, hen parties, corporate events, funeral wakes or private dinner parties. His smallest event has been a dinner party for 4 and his biggest event a barbecue party for 750. Thierry’s company is able to sort the whole event, not just the catering. The marquee, linen, glasses, cutlery, seating, entertainment and flowers can all be looked after; And Thierry takes personal responsibility for ensuring that everything is exactly right. “I keep my hand on everything,” Thierry told me, “I like to control every single detail of an event, and if I need to do it myself I will. I insist on high quality and high quality control.” Of course it’s the food that Thierry produces that is what we remember most, and it never disappoints. Thierry has eight chefs at his disposal so he is able to deal with a wide range of requests and also serve top quality food to large numbers, be it classic French or Thai Fusion! Simply Thierry at Home Thierry’s second business is specialist food products, selling jams, chutneys, dressings and sauces. They are available in Stamford at the

Stamford Cheese Cellar in St Mary’s St. All the recipes are created by Thierry and their inventiveness makes them stand out from the crowd. Two recent favourites are Pear & Vanilla Chutney and Apple & Chilli Jelly. Thierry is inspired by trips around Europe, and a recent trip to Marseilles has got him thinking abut pestos and vegetable dressings, so we expect them to join the range soon! Simply Thierry Cookery School Thierry’s third business and one he is very passionate about is the Cookery School in Brownlow St. Here he has a class that comfortably accommodates ten people and allows him to share his enthusiasm and expertise with others. He also invites a series of guest chefs along to teach specific cuisines or techniques, so there is something for everyone to learn. A list of upcoming courses can be found at www.stamfordcookeryschool. co.uk. He is also an enthusiast for teaching youngsters. Each year he runs the Junior Masterchef competition, in partnership with Le Creuset for whom he is their regional ambassador. “I can’t believe how competitive kids are!” he told me “I love doing it…sharing the knowledge…meeting all types of new people. And I find people go away with fresh enthusiasm to try out something new. I love it and enjoy it and get a buzz out of every single course.” • Stamford Cookery School, Unit 3C, Brownlow Street, Stamford, PE9 2EL. Eating Out

Oundle Mill

“If you were to choose your local dining out experience by the location then there is no doubt that Oundle Mill, alongside the banks of the River Nene, would be high on the list”, declares Ashley Martin

I

t is many years since I had been in the Mill’s restaurant and it has undergone a significant makeover. Billing itself as a ‘boutique hotel’ with ‘rustic chic’, Oundle Mill can trace its roots back to the 17th century and used to be known as Barnwell Mill. It is located adjoining the A605 just a mile or so from Oundle Town Centre and next to Upper Barnwell Lock. We were there to sample the Mill’s newly unveiled spring menu, which features an array of dishes with much of the emphasis on utilising a wide range of locally sourced produce. Asparagus is a favourite of mine so I couldn’t resist the locally sourced spears served with an almond and asparagus mousse and a crispy egg (£6.50). Meanwhile, Helen opted for potted salmon with leeks, Jersey Royals, horseradish

and a scotch salmon egg (£7.95). Both starters were extremely flavoursome, very fresh and light. Lightly toasted bread was served with balsamic and rape seed oil and a palate cleanser of pink grapefruit and champagne granite prior to our main course was simple and refreshing. My spring lamb, from nearby Lutton, was served on a bed of crushed potatoes, pea purée, pea shoots and mint jelly (£19.95). Helen opted for slow-cooked belly pork with celeriac, apple with black pudding, creamed potatoes and crackling (£14.50). Both were light and aromatic and beautifully presented. For dessert I opted for a warm chocolate fondant with white chocolate and basil and raspberry sorbet (£6.50). My dessert with its warm and cold texture on the tongue was a delight and Helen declared her banana cheesecake, toffee sauce and Pedro Ximenez raisins (£5.50) delicious and “tasting of Christmas cake in a glass”. Chef Gavin Austin has a number of top kitchens on his CV including London’s Chez Nico (three Michelin stars) and L’Escargot and has created a varied menu. Pleasingly, it is not overly extensive - thus ensuring freshness and attention to detail. The brevity of the menu contrasts with the extensive wine list - wine being a passion of Mill manager Paul - and we chose a very agreeable Chilean sauvignon blanc (£24.95). The Mill is hosting summer barbeques by the River Nene every Saturday in July (excluding July 28) and August between noon and 6pm. So here’s hoping the sun shines. • Oundle Mill Barnwell Road, Oundle, PE8 5PBTel: 01832 272621 www.oundlemill.co.uk

THE WICKED WITCH After our first very positive review of the Wicked Witch, we decided to re-visit a couple of months later to see how things were going. Pictures: ellideanphotography.co.uk

ameon Clarke, who was helping out in the kitchen from the start, has now been appointed Head Chef and this will be good news to his many gastronomic devotees in the region. Dameon first became known locally when he was at Nick’s Restaurant in Oakham, then the Collyweston Slater and latterly at his own restaurant Assiette in Stamford. He began his stellar culinary career at the Michelin 3 star Gavroche restaurant in London. At the Wicked Witch he is cooking very fine, but not over complex food. It is great food but not fine dining. In Dameon’s words: “I am

returning more to the style of cooking at the Collyweston Slater rather than the complex fine dining of Assiette.” We begun with sushi tuna with mint & sugar – an absolutely delicious dish, with each flavour standing separately but still working in harmony. Next up a three-hour cooked duck’s egg (the slow heat creates a rich consistency for the yolk) atop white and green asparagus, cep mushrooms and pecorino cheese. For the mains I had succulent duck with duck hearts, celeriac and baby lettuce; whilst my partner enjoyed a ‘lobster soup’ (eaten mainly

with a knife and fork), which comprised lobster, beetroot, peas and a quail’s egg. Finally for dessert (this in not a restaurant where you would want to miss a course), we enjoyed a strawberry confection, constructed at the table, of strawberries, clotted cream, strawberry soup and white chocolate powder – indulgent and combining many different textures. All in all, food thoroughly to be recommended. The Wicked Witch, Bridge St, Ryhall, PE9 4HH Tel: 01780 763649 www.ryhallwitch.co.uk

HEALTH & WELLBEING

Growing Old in Stamford Richard Barry learns about the options

I

t wasn’t until a neighbour’s son – who lives a couple of hundred miles away – asked what help was available in Stamford for his elderly mum, that I started to look into the options that can help us cope with old age. The good news is that there’s a huge amount of help available. The bad news is that anyone who is even marginally affluent is going to have to cough up a lot of money to pay for it. What follows is, I regret, more of a catalogue than an interesting narrative, but I hope it may prove useful to people facing these issues for themselves or relatives.

Adult care is a county responsibility The starting point is to get a copy of the Lincolnshire Care Services Directory (01522 782155) and - because of our location - it’s also worth getting the directories for Rutland (01572 722377); Northants (0300 126 1000) and Peterborough (01733 747474). The Lincolnshire Directory is a brilliant document, from which it’s possible to draw up a spectrum of care alternatives: • Move to retirement housing, with or without home care • Remain in your own home, with or without home care • Move to a care home • Move to a care home with nursing • Move to a hospice Each of the highlighted alternatives will be discussed below in a bit more detail, but only for Stamford – defined as postal district PE9.

Retirement Housing Downsizing from one’s home to retirement housing can make sense on a number of grounds – the two most common being financial (for example, selling a freehold house to buy a leasehold flat) and ease of living (moving to a bungalow or single-floor flat from a multistorey Stamford house). The key concept is “independent living”, usually with a minimum age criterion of 55. The housing might have a concierge to look after the buildings, but he or she would not get involved in personal care. To make the jargon more confusing, some providers extend the concept to “assisted independent living”, providing a bit more help (e.g. the option of eating in a communal dining room rather than always having to cook in one’s own kitchen) but still with no personal care. A list of existing schemes is available from the Elderly Accommodation Counsel (EAC) (0800 377 7070). For PE9 the EAC lists 20

44

retirement schemes. Eight are run by SKDC (Clare Close; Edmonds Close; Emlyn’s Gardens; Essex Road; St Clements; St Martin’s Close; Hillary Close and Tenter Court). These schemes provide no personal care and are therefore classified as ‘Housing’, which is a district responsibility, rather than ‘Adult Care’ which - as we’ve seen - is a county responsibility. All SKDC schemes are on a rental basis and, by free market standards, the rents are low. The first step to qualify is to join the SKDC Housing Register (01476 406311) but be warned – there are more than 3,000 applicants on the Register and only 451 could be housed last year. But this doesn’t necessarily mean that you will have to wait for ever – this highly sought-after housing is allocated on a points system, and the points you get depend on your need. Similar to the SKDC schemes, Rutland has three in PE9 (Francis Court in Ryall; Manor View and Carver Court in Ketton). These are rentals with resident wardens. Applicants should start by joining the Rutland Housing Register. This register is administered by Spire Homes (0300 123 6611). Northants has one rental-with-warden scheme in PE9, at Warmington. Access to the Northants Housing Register is also administered by Spire Homes. Eight of the PE9 schemes listed by EAC are private, provided by the following five companies: Anchor (0845 140 2020) runs Welland Mews on Water Street (leasehold). Barchester (020 7352 2224) runs Chater Mews in Ketton (leasehold), and also Welland Meadows (leasehold) at Tixover, adjacent to a nursing home (see below). Hanover (0800 280 2575) runs Hanover Court in Silver Lane (rental) and Torkington Gardens in West Street (leasehold). Lilac-hall (01780 444357) runs the Tixover Grange / Cottages / Walled Garden complex at Tixover (leasehold). Peverel (0845 880 5560) runs Newcomb Court in Scotgate and Blackstones Court in St Georges Avenue (both leasehold) As the list shows, most are leasehold, not rental. The annual service charge levied on a leasehold can come as a shock to people who have downsized from freehold homes and are unfamiliar with the service charge concept. What’s included in the service charge and how it may increase over time can be a source of friction between the management company and the leaseholder. There’s a ‘ginger group’ called Carlex (campaign against retirement leasehold exploitation) that is worth Googling. Finally, it’s important to mention the five

‘Hospitals’ in Stamford: Lord Burghley; Browne’s; Truesdale; Hopkin’s; and Fryer’s. These are quite distinct from private or council provision, and are run by boards of trustees.

Home Care There is a key distinction between ‘personal care’ – washing and dressing, for example – and other care. Personal care can only be provided by those approved by the Care Quality Commission (CQC). The website www.cqc.org. uk provides a useful and easy-to-use database for anyone searching for personal care. In PE9 it lists two home-care providers; one does not meet all the required CQC standards but the other, Bluebird Care does (01780 480881). Much of the care required by people is nonpersonal and does not need to be regulated by the CQC. A leading provider of non-CQC care in Stamford is the charity Evergreen Care Trust (01780 765900). Many of its services are provided by volunteers at no cost to the client – such vital things as ‘befriending’ (there are housebound people who might otherwise see nobody for weeks at a time); ‘advocacy’ (helping people to navigate through the daunting complexity of the modern world) and ‘blitz cleaning’ when domestic chores have overwhelmed somebody. Evergreen also helps people when they return from hospital – making sure there’s someone to greet them, that there’s food in the house, that clean sheets are on the bed and so forth. Age Concern (01529 302843) will soon be coming to Stamford, and plan to provide nonCQC care.

Care Homes Care homes are for those who are unable or unwilling to live independently – hence the distinction from retirement housing. To add a bit of confusion, some authorities have an extra category, “sheltered housing” – which seems to be mid way between a “retirement home with home care” and a “care home”. However, neither the Lincolnshire Directory nor the CQC data-base use this category and place their emphasis on care homes, with or without nursing. The CQC website lists eight care homes in PE9. One of these does not meet all of the CQC standards. Of the seven that do, three provide nursing and four do not. The four care homes that meet CQC standards but do not provide nursing are: Braceborough Hall Retirement Home is owned by Susan Burcham. (01780 560649) Chater Lodge Ketton, is owned by Barchester, with 234 homes nationally. It cares for the

Lakeland Hospice (01536 747755) in Corby. Probably the best known hospices are the Marie Curie ones for those with terminal cancer. There are nine throughout the UK, the nearest to Stamford being in Solihull (0121 254 7800)

Payment This is a very complicated business, and one that changes quite frequently as central government changes its mind. It is vital to get the advice of ASC. (Lincolnshire Adult Social Care on 01522 782155) At the moment, you are unlikely to get much help if your capital and savings exceed £23,250. This figure includes the value of your house unless you have a partner living in the house, in which case its value is excluded. There are a number of tricky little rules so, again, ASC advice is important. There are, however, two sources of money that are non-means tested and non-taxable. The first is the Attendance Allowance of £49.30 or £73.60 per week, depending on whether the person requires day care or day and night care. To get this, contact the Benefits Agency on 0800 882200. The second is a nursing care contribution funded by the NHS of £108.70 per week. Your GP will help you to claim this if you move into a care home with nursing. It is paid directly to the home.

physically disabled and for the demented. (01780 720376) Tallington Care Home is owned by Country Court Care, a family company with eight homes across the Midlands. It cares mainly for the demented. (01780 740314) Whitefriars is owned by The Order of St John Care Trust charity, with 73 homes nationally. It cares mainly for the demented. (01780 765434). The concept of a care home that does not provide nursing might look like a contradiction in terms. But it is not, as can be seen when we consider, for example, dementia patients – these are people who often require one-to-one care but do not require catheters, the taking of blood samples and similar nursing duties. Care homes without nursing can call on visiting district nurses if and when they need nursing expertise. The three care homes in PE9 that do provide nursing include: Priory Court Nursing Home is owned by HCOne Ltd with 249 homes nationally. (01780 766130) Red House Nursing Home is owned by Dinesh

Patel (01780 766261) Tixover House is owned by Barchester with 234 homes nationally (01780 444491) The Lincolnshire Directory provides a very useful checklist of 65 questions that one would want to ask when assessing whether a care home is suitable for oneself or a relative.

Hospices These specialise in the care of people who are dying. There are now more than 200 hospices in the UK. Many have home-care teams and day centres for people living, and intending to die, at home. Some are funded by charity and some are part of the NHS. Care in a hospice is free. A list of hospices can be found on the website www.helpthehospices.org.uk under “UK hospice and palliative care services”. The website shows none in PE9 but five within a 25 mile radius of PE9, listed in order of proximity. South West Lincolnshire Community Macmillan Team (01778 426523) in Bourne. Cancer and Specialist Care (01733 678570) in Peterborough. Sue Ryder (01733 330060) in Peterborough. The Tulip Suite (01775 652017) in Spalding.

Next Steps Community Care Established in 2006, and continuing to grow, Next Steps community care are specialists in caring for clients in their own homes and are now offering their services in Stamford and surrounding areas. The company was founded by Steve and Caroline Croxton, both registered nurses with over 35 years combined experience within the NHS. Their ethos is to provide individualised care and support to enable individuals to continue to live at home while still receiving excellent care. Their services include help with household chores such as cleaning, preparing and cooking meals, or other more personal tasks such as bathing and showering, dressing, shaving and continence care. They can also help with shopping, swimming or other activities. They are very well rated by the CQC. They invite you to contact them for further information on (01733) 367226 asking for the Area manager or by visiting www.next-steps.co.uk. STAMFORD Living JULY 2012

Arthur Sells – Rutland Terrace & Uffington Thank you to AC and TF who have both sent interesting – although rather different – accounts of Mr Sells. AC recalls the Sells living at 8 Rutland Terrace being ‘very regal’ and, “They were both immaculate in their dress. Mrs Sells was likened to an American film star of the day. She wore long silk/ chiffon dresses and coats with matching picture hats, gloves and parasols, usually in lovely pastel colours. She appeared extremely haughty but of course may have been very different. They were obviously very wealthy. The house and gardens were immaculate. They would sit under umbrellas on the first floor balcony overlooking the Meadows.” TF describes Mr Sells as a benefactor of the village of Uffington where several members of his family lived. “In the 1920s he converted two stone thatched cottages into one building and gave it to the village for their Village Hall. His photograph still hangs there. In 1933 he presented a large silver cup for the winner of the annual flower, fruit and vegetable show. ... I was a pupil of Uffington Village School and remember that on a certain day each year, the headmistress ... presented a silver sixpence: a gift from Arthur Sells. Arthur Sells had a very successful career becoming a Bank Manager in Sheffield in his early 40s. He was born in Uffington where his father, William, was a tailor. Perhaps he had fond memories of his childhood there or perhaps it was his father who was the benefactor? Can anyone enlighten us?

“Can anyone tell me why the houses on Casterton Road north of the Donkey Steps were always called The White City?” MB Even our best correspondents haven’t been able to come up with an answer to this! It might be worth mentioning that the White City Stadium, in London, was built in 1908 for the Olympic Games and that this area of town was probably developed at about the same time. Perhaps the old Twilley site further up Casterton Road, now being developed into housing (currently called Roman Mills), should become Olympic Park?

Frank Iliffe Several readers responded to our request for recollections of Iliffe’s shop on St Peter’s. All tell a similar story about Mr and Mrs Iliffe – popular and helpful with an ability to make children feel they were important customers. This is typical, “As a small impecunious boy I bought my fishing tackle from Frank Iliffe. He was a pleasant affable man and would discuss at length my choice of tackle as if I were as old as he.” AC agrees they were likeable, with Mrs Iliffe “helping you to use your sweet coupons sensibly”. However, some of her memories were not so good, “On some occasions I had to collect my father’s maggots from there for his fishing trips. I hate maggots and still shudder to see them. Mr Iliffe opened a gate at the side of the shop, went to a large container and measured them out into the container I had to take, even asking which colour my father preferred. I always carried them home at arm’s length.” We also learnt that Mr Iliffe was keen on sports, served in the Home Guard and had a garden where Warenne Keep is now. Does anyone have an old picture of the shop?

For next time: AT’s winning question for ‘10yrs of Ask Leo’ - Is it feasible that the canopies on top of the Burghley Bottle lodges were ‘recycled’ from Wothorpe Towers as they became ruined? Bowmans – Thank you to those who have already contacted us. We’d still like to hear from more people who worked there. Coronation Celebrations – Any memories of the events described in the June issue? Send your replies to 1 St Peter’s St, Stamford PE9 2PQ or askleo@btinternet.com Book Tokens: to AC and TF with thanks for their very interesting letters

Alternatives

Alternatives Pregnancy Advice Centre provides a confidential, caring and practical response to local teenagers, women and their partners. Alysia Anderson met Kate Nottidge, the centre director, at the charity’s premises next to Stamford Hospital

T

he moment you walk into the Alternatives centre you can’t help but feel welcome. From the tranquil flower logos to the restful shades of blue and green in the counselling rooms, this is a place designed to put people at their ease. Kate Nottidge, the youthful Centre Director, maintains this effect with her ready smile and open manner. Kate, along with deputy Helen Leech, manager Donna Dickinson and a team of dedicated volunteers, provides a wide variety of services. The centre offers free pregnancy and chlamydia testing, runs parenting courses and school tutorials, loans baby clothes and equipment and is, above all, a safe and confidential place to talk. Clients include expectant parents, young people embarking on relationships and those who have experienced loss, abortion or miscarriage. They can contact the centre either by phone, in person or online. “The majority of our clients are aged 15-19 but we do get older mums too who may be facing an unexpected pregnancy or miscarriage,” says Kate. Since the centre opened in July 2009 more than 300 people have passed through its doors, aged 13 to 60-plus. Kate’s role is to oversee the centre’s growing number of projects and in particular its education programme, evaluate, which helps equip young people to make healthy choices in life. This could be in relation to issues such as drugs, alcohol, peer pressure or sex. Kate explained: “Talking to young people about selfesteem, love and relationships can lead them to make different choices in life. In line with the National Curriculum schemes we visit schools and talk to Years 5 to 13 about topics such as the physical and emotional changes they will experience. As the government has cut this area of education it’s great that we can come in and provide support to teachers.” Kate and her team not only visit local schools but also regularly attend the Children’s Centre and Stamford College, where young people can drop in for a chat. “They can be open with us and talk freely about prevention, safety, love and sexual health” says Kate. “It’s amazing to be part of a child’s development, of their growing up, and to help defuse a potential situation.” Although the centre is run purely through charitable donations and the commitment of volunteers, it does incredibly valuable work and is one of 140 such centres across the UK. A board of local trustees underpins this work, helping to raise funds through events such as the annual Bollywood Ball, to be held this year at the Arts Centre on 8 September. Kate and colleague Alice Scott, wife of Chairman Ian Scott, each ran 140 miles to raise thousands of pounds. A generous grant from the Stamford Young People’s Charity is also key to the centre’s survival. Currently around 15 volunteers are on hand,

but more are always needed. Kate explained: sitting in my cellar. “Last month we had 66 people in asking for • To volunteer, donate or make an advice. We are open Monday and Thursday appointment, call 01780 765853 or 07913 for drop-ins and appointments and 24/7 by 052159, email office@alternativesstamford, phone, but we’d like to open five days a week”. visit www.alternativesstamford.com or go to The next volunteer training course starts in the centre at Stamford Hospital Site, Ryhall September and runs over 12 mornings so that Road, Stamford PE9 1YA parents of schoolchildren can attend. “Mums make great volunteers as they can be both empathetic and inspirational for young girls” says Kate. She is hoping to get the course accredited as an Introduction to Counselling qualification. The centre already runs courses for Young Expectant Parents which lead to an Open College Network qualification. These are run in conjunction with the Children’s Centre, where parents continue to receive In aid of alternatives, Stamford support after the baby’s arrival. Another facet of the centre’s work which Kate admits to particularly enjoying is the loan of baby equipment and clothing to parents. She showed me a huge room full of Tickets available from cots, prams, furniture and Alternatives Stamford clothes donated by well01780 765853 wishers. “We always need office@alternativesstamford.co.uk good-quality items, such as books and stairgates.” I left Kate full of admiration for her and her team’s work, and with a promise to bring her the car seat STAMFORD Living JUly 2012
