came across a word I had never heard of the other day and thought ‘I like this word; I wish I had come across it before’. The word is meliorism (admit it, you hadn’t heard of it before either), which is the doctrine that the world tends to become better or may be made better by human effort. I much prefer it to the phrase ‘things were better in the olden days’, because I don’t think they were. Consider this: crime rates are markedly down, life expectancy is up, more people stay in education longer, we have far more good products & services to enjoy than we ever used to have, access to knowledge and information is dramatically more democratic thanks to the internet and there is less pollution than there used to be. So here’s to a great July, which overall will be a tiny bit better than the month before it, thanks to human effort and maybe the weather.

In the swim The pre-holiday countdown is never a favourite time for me or countless other ladies struggling with body issues and pale wintery flesh about to be exposed on sunnier holidays. Sally Stillingfleet dives into swimwear paradise and finds out there is so much more on offer

iselle and her team at Chameleon are more than happy to talk you through their extensive swimwear selection in either shop, in Stamford or at the relatively new shop in Oakham’s Mill Street. “It is definitely worth spending some time trying swimwear on,”Des explained. “That way we can get to know what’s working and we aim to make the whole experience pain free!” Time spent trying on will ensure you have one thing less to worry about and it’s all about finding the perfect fit at Chameleon. There are some beautiful styles on offer and often a style may have another colour-way in the Oakham shop. It seems there is more help for larger busted ladies, with built-in support and larger bands to contain and flatter, with some gorgeous bold prints from Primadonna. The tops are designed more like bras with all the benefits of good construction. Charmline specialises in flattering the tummy area and so these tend to be one-piece swimsuits with well designed tucks and pleats to minimise. Of course the better fabrics help with that process and the fabric does last. Australian brand Seafolly have some fantastic prints this season, really bold florals and fashion led. They also have a popular one-piece style called ‘Goddess’ which has a tummy panel and comes in a range of colours. Nicole Oliver is a higher price point range with some innovative detailing such as metal clasps this year and of course an extensive selection of the matching pieces, which turns the investment into an entire look for that 5 star hotel experience! Smaller cup sizes are well catered for with Sièlei - the prints are younger and funkier. The Watercult brand, which is new this season also caters for a smaller bust sizes and has particularly pretty shapes and styles with stringy briefs. Moontide continue to allow us to buy two in one with their reversible styles, perfect for ringing the changes but this time around with prints and plains. For every swimwear brand there are some lovely wraps, trousers, kaftans and even trilbys to match and some innovative loose fitting floaty trousers. Flip-flops with more of a wedge heel are more flattering and elongate the leg. Of course there are plenty of other styles to suit every swimwear need and bags of experienced advice to help you on your way – it’s really not that bad!

Stamford Chamber Orchestra 30 Years of Local Music-Making S

tamford’s own resident orchestra celebrates its 30th anniversary with a special concert on 5th July in the Arts Centre Ballroom. This concert features the Mendelssohn Violin Concerto with local star soloist Katy Smith and the most famous four notes in music. Contact the Arts Centre for tickets. The SCO was founded in 1983 by composer Jeremy Pike, father of international violinist Jennifer Pike. Jeremy said “on arriving in Stamford I felt there was a lack of opportunity for local musicians so I established the orchestra. Little did I think it would still be going 30 years later, and with some founder members”. Ben One such founder member is leader Nan Ingrams, who Palmer has grown and developed SCO, inspiring younger players: “When I joined 30 years ago I never envisaged leading, let alone for 28 years! It’s been a privilege and pleasure making music with so many dedicated, friendly musicians. Concert memories include Jeremy’s work for five string quartets, Andrew Constantine’s musical eloquence, Adrian Brown’s humour and stories of musical giants, Christopher Brown’s joint choir concerts, Jennifer Pikes’ wonderful playing, and Ben’s reviving interpretations of Haydn. Here’s to another 30 years of Stamford’s wonderful orchestra!” SCO has a reputation for providing exciting, high quality performances under prestigious conductor, Ben Palmer. Baston Car and Bike Show gets into top gear on July 6th, from 10am W

ith a rich automotive history, the village of Baston is the perfect location for a car and bike show that mixes old and new. Come along to see veteran, vintage and classics mingling with just about every modern manufacturer the area has to offer. Making an appearance this year will be the famous ‘reasonable priced car’ from the Top Gear series, so if you fancy sitting in the same seat that the likes of Tom Cruise, Cameron Diaz and Rowan Atkinson drove in, then don’t miss out. Now in its fifth year, the event has grown to be one of the biggest automotive shows in South Lincolnshire with over 400 exhibiting cars and 300 bikes in 2013. Uniquely, it is the only local show where you can compare all the latest models from main dealers, so if you’re interested in a new car come along to take a look in a relaxed environment. As well as the cars and bikes, visitors can enjoy live bands and catering including a BBQ, picnic area and a full bar with real ales. Le grand depart With the recent success of British cyclists, notably at the London Olympics and with Bradley Wiggins’ win of the Tour in 2012, the first Briton ever to triumph, cycling has never been more popular. On 5 July, the Tour de France will begin in Yorkshire, tracing a 190km route from Leeds to Harrogate, past fields planted with special artworks for the occasion. It’s the first time the North of England has hosted the event. The cyclists will then hurtle up hills and down dales along 200km from York to Sheffield on 6 July. The following day sees them tackle the final stretch, a mere 159km from Cambridge to London. Stamford is around an hour away from York, Cambridge and London by train, so why not consider cheering our riders on in person? Details of the exact route, which includes Trumpington near Cambridge, can be found on www.letouryorkshire.com

Out and about This year, Rutland Cycling picked up the top award from Total Women’s Cycling, thanks in part to its women-only and Mums and Tots organised rides. Lee Wigginton, who works at the Whitwell branch, said “As part of our commitment to inspire more people to get out cycling, we offer a range of regular led rides, including senior cyclist rides and women’s rides in partnership with British Cycling’s Breeze campaign (www.britishcycling.org.uk). These rides are free to attend and we encourage participation by offering substantial discounts on cycle hire, so that bike ownership is not a barrier”. From now until October there are Senior Cyclist rides every Tuesday and women-only Summer Sunday rides, free with your own bike or £5 to hire. The chance to combine

evenings at 6.30pm. Saturday morning rides from Stamford are open to all, covering various local routes, and are held fortnightly at 9.30am starting from the shop.

Run in conjunction with Leicestershire and Rutland Wildlife Trust and suitable for all ages and abilities, the rides go from Normanton along the shore cycle path to the Osprey Viewpoint at Lyndon. For the more committed cyclist, the Giant store has set up two Sportive routes, one 62 miles and one 96 miles, which have timed points so you can see how your performance stacks up. At Cyclewright. co, Gavin Thompson told me about their free guided rides for locals. “Our rides are aimed at people coming into the sport who might find organised cycling clubs a bit daunting at first. We welcome all abilities and help people to get 20 miles or so under their belt, experience riding in a group and provide a stepping stone to going faster and further.” Cyclewright runs Ladies Cake and Coffee cycles from Baston on Friday mornings at 9.30am and again on Wednesday

Pedal power We are spoilt for choice when it comes to cycling suppliers, with one of the UK’s best independent bike shops on our doorstep. Rutland Cycling (01780 460705; www.rutlandcycling.com) is consistently voted one of the UK’s best retailers by cycling magazines and organisations. At Rutland Water, there are stores at Whitwell and Normanton where you can buy and hire bikes along with all the associated kit such as clothing, helmets, gloves, locks, lights and bike racks. Numerous brands at Whitwell include Specialised, Trek and Cube while the Normanton store is dedicated to Giant. Choose from road bikes, triathlon bikes, mountain bikes or hybrids which are suitable for both types of terrain. A range of children’s scooters and bicycles is available, including BMX bikes. Rutland Cycling also has a shop and hire centre at Fineshade Woods, home to a network of cycling and walking trails which this summer include a kids’ Gruffalo Trail. In Stamford, Cyclewright.co (01780 482899; www.cyclewright. co) opened its doors last November in St Paul’s St, following the success of the founding store at Waterside Garden Centre in Baston. Owned by Simon and Gemma Wright, the shops stock numerous brand-name bikes for all ages along with all the requisite equipment and services you’d expect from an expert cycling centre. “We specialise in custom builds and wheelbuilding and are able to do same day repairs on small work.” Other bike shops in Stamford are Richardson’s Cycles on North St (01780 480455; www.richardsonsonline.co.uk) and Halfords (01780 482086; www.halfords.com) on Ryhall Road.

For family cycling, you are spoilt for choice. Rutland Water has three, eight, 17 or 23-mile routes around the reservoir (the longest is the full perimeter circuit including the scenic Hambleton Peninsula). Other good bets are Fineshade Woods, with its five-mile circular Family Cycle, and Grimsthorpe Castle (www.grimsthorpe.co.uk) near Bourne. Open daily from 11am in summer, this stately home offers cycle hire and a marked trail through the spectacular lakeside park. Designed with families in mind, the route avoids steep inclines and rough terrain wherever possible. The full trail is nearly ten miles, but there are shorter options available. New for 2014 are early evening guided tours, where cyclists can enjoy empty trails after the park has officially closed and learn about the estate. A minimum of four people is required, up to a maximum of 20. Bikes and helmets are provided if required. Sky Rides are family-friendly, traffic-free cycling events in town and city centres to encourage the sport. There is one in Leicester on 24 August (www.goskyride.com). For competitive cyclists there are plenty of events such as the Dambuster and Vitruvian triathlons at Rutland Water. The former is on 21 June and includes a 42km bike ride, while the hardcore Vitruvian on 30 August entails an 85km blast. Entrance is sold out for both events but why not watch and consider competing next year?

Join the club There are numerous cycling clubs in the area, all offering a friendly environment in which to clock up the miles for an annual subscription of around £15. Stamford Chain Gang (www. stamfordchaingang.co.uk) welcomes recruits for its Sunday rides, meeting at 8am in summer at the Danish Invader on Empingham Road. All you need is a helmet and roadworthy bike. Other groups running regular group rides and races include Velo Club Rutland (www. veloclubrutland.org.uk) and Bourne Wheelers (bournewheelers.wordpress.com). Velo Club Rutland offers the chance to ride starter events up to competing in races and welcomes all bikers, from mountain bikers to road and touring cyclists of any age. Regular rides include a Wednesday evening mountain bike ride at 6.30pm from Manton. Bourne Wheelers hosts a 25-mile beginner ride most Saturday mornings, including a café stop, as well as a 50-mile Sunday morning route. In summer, the club runs weekly ten-mile time trials on three different courses in the area. An active youth section, Bourne Bullets, for under-16s, competes in local road races, cyclo cross, time trials and on track. For under14s, there are weekly Go Ride coaching sessions from April to November. All affiliated club members receive a ten per cent discount at Cyclewright.co. STAMFORD LIVING JULY 2014

s the property market continues to improve, much is being made of the factors that can influence the value of a property – such as its proximity to a sought after school. For example the catchment areas of good state schools can command a 12%+ premium when compared to their county average, recent research has revealed. Living close to where your child is being educated, has not always been as high a priority for some parents. However, given the wide varying education standards in the East Midlands, the pendulum is firmly starting to swing towards the location of a good school being a top priority for many home buyers with children. Changing family needs Clearly living close to a top performing school is always going to be an attractive proposition for family buyers; but at what cost? For those able to do so, the debate between funding an independent education or allocating money to buying a superior property in a good catchment area, is a frequent one, with no clear answer. Family needs have dramatically changed over the last decade and allowing children to travel to school with friends or on a school bus has become more important, as parents juggle their increasingly demanding work commitments. Leaving work early or arriving to work late isn’t always an option for some parents. With many schools offering extra-curricular activities before or after normal lessons and two or three siblings attending the same school, this can result in parents having to carry out multiple journeys to and from school as children of different ages with different interests finish at different times. Parents that are working find this difficult to manage and in some cases have found the solution of living nearer to the school to be an attractive one. With a limited stock of ‘best of breed’ homes fitting this criteria, it is easy to see how premiums can be achieved for properties so close and convenient to the most favoured schools. Finding the right location Both the highly regarded King’s School in Peterborough and Bourne

Grammar school are selective schools, so the ability of your child tends to take precedence over your postcode. However, when the inevitable oversubscription of bright and talented children occurs, suddenly the proximity to the school takes on a new meaning and finding that ideal home can be particularly difficult, and in some cases pricey. The Stamford Endowment Schools run an extensive network of buses reaching as far as Newark, Stilton and Corby. Whilst this is enormously helpful for busy working parents, the ideal for many is still to be located within fifteen minutes drive and indeed, many families opt for walking distance where possible. In the wake of Stamford winning The Sunday Times title of Kate Vincent ‘Best Place to Live in Britain’ popularity for the town has grown significantly. Competition for quality homes is fierce, underlined by a number of properties being sold in a competitive bidding situation, which has resulted in some ‘best of breed homes’ selling significantly over their asking price. A number of villages outside Stamford offer excellent primary school provision; both Barnack and Ketton gained Outstanding ratings at their last inspections. Further a field, Langham CE Primary School achieved 91st place in The Sunday Times ‘Parents Power’ list (impressive given there are over 20,000 primary schools nationwide) and Whissendine CE Primary was named by Tatler as one of the top primary schools in the country. The shortage of quality housing stock and pressure on school places means that parents need to give themselves plenty of time if considering a move nearer to a popular school. I have already mentioned the benefits of dividend tax in a previous article; here is one proviso about ISAs: dividends from investments held in ISA accounts are taxed at 10%, but the tax deducted is not recoverable, as used to be the case. “However, there are ways of overcoming this. For example, a number of highly reputable offshore-registered investment companies are subject to our UK regulatory system. Having offshore status means that the income is paid gross. Let the children play… with their i-Pad or in the woods? Samanatha Weeks

Samantha Weeks is the Director of Early Years at Stamford Junior School and an Associate Lecturer at the University of Northampton, specialising in the field of Early Childhood. She reflects on an issue that concerns us all as parents

“I

t was not like that in my day”, “do you remember the good old days when we played outside and ran free” or how about “children were allowed to be children back then”? These are familiar phrases and a common response to the fast pace of change in our society. There is a hefty amount of nostalgia added to these wistful musings and we must ask ourselves whether or not nostalgia helps us to look forward with clarity, or hinders us by encouraging a need to protect our children against all of this “unnecessary modern development”? There is another camp of course which fully embraces digital technology for our youngest children with the justification that it is their future. This argument asserts that the rapid development of social media as a form of communication means that our children will need to understand its place in their lives, both benefits and dangers. Mr Gove has ensured that coding is now an integral part of the new curriculum because we want to ensure that the future generation is armed with the skills that they need for an ever-changing workforce. So we need technology, don’t we? It needs to be at the heart of our children’s lives from the very beginning – do we agree? The nostalgia starts to creep in, telling us that technology is stopping the children playing outside, they are becoming addicted to screens and they can’t talk to each other anymore. I am always interested by the arguments that want children to experience the ‘real world’, rather than through a screen. As an early childhood educator, I am passionate

about children experiencing the ‘real world’, but I also believe that technology is now part of that reality. We see the tremendous benefits of our Reception aged children taking i-Pads with them on their weekly trips to the woods. They take photographs of things that interest them and bring this back to school to show the rest of their friends. This is an example of them playing outside, using the screen-based technology when they need it and talking to each other about their experiences. All in all, this dispels the myths that scare many of us about the over use of technology. There lies the difference; our approach has been to use technology as a tool, in particular to support and develop creative and critical thinking. For many years it has been an aim to encourage children to become critical thinkers. I believe the skills needed to be critical in their use of technology are also vital for our children and they must develop these skills from a young age. It is important that they learn when technology is of benefit and when it is not. In order to do this they will need broad

experience, specific teaching and an approach embedded throughout their learning. Ultimately, we will all have our own position within this debate and this will depend entirely on our own personal history and experiences. If we find ourselves looking back to the good old days and our own childhood, though, we must look through the rose-coloured hue and remember that our childhood has passed. The childhood that our children are experiencing is theirs, not ours, and we cannot possibly know yet or understand what it is that faces them in their adulthood. The wonderfully wise Ken Robinson reminds us that we need to help our children develop the creativity needed to adapt to and solve the problems that they will encounter in an unknown future. Surely technology can only be an asset if it is wielded as a tool to use at the right time and in the right way, not supplanting, but rather supplementing and complementing other forms of learning? • Be inspired by Ken Robinson on TED talks, watch his talk: Changing paradigms. Something for Everyone at Uppingham Summer School! I

f anyone is wondering how to keep the children entertained over the summer holidays then Uppingham Summer School could well be the answer! Most of the courses run for five days, and there are residential options for any children who might want the added fun of a few days away from home. ove Writing’ author Sue Moorcroft will run her very practical How to Make Money by Writing workshop at the William Cecil, Stamford, on 26 July. Here, she tells Stamford Living just what it takes to make your writing pay... Can anyone write? Most people can write something and everyone can improve with the correct tuition - learning in a happy and friendly environment really helps, too. It’s a myth, I believe, that writers are ‘born, not made’ - courses, conventions, talks, books, magazines, online forums - they all have their place in the process of learning to write well, and successfully. All the other arts - dancing, painting, acting – usually require years of training. Why should writing be any different? What is the most important attribute for a writer? Persistence - and a willingness to be trained. I truly believe that the name for a writer who doesn’t give up is a ‘published’ writer! Also, one needs to learn not only the techniques of writing but how the publishing world works. What do you find most satisfying about writing? Zoning in and out of different worlds, getting to know my characters and how they’ll act, giving them the endings to their stories that they deserve, and making a plot ‘hang together’. Having my work accepted for publication is always incredibly satisfying. What’s the best advice you could give a writer? Be realistic but aim high, and look for opportunities. Be open to ideas, network, make yourself professional. Writing a book or a short story is an artistic act, but selling it is pure business. Also, just write ... a little every day. The Nene Park & Peterborough This walk goes for much of its length through the Nene Park, one of the finest contemporary natural spaces in any British city; and past one of the country’s greatest medieval buildings, Peterborough Cathedral. Photos of Ferry Meadows: Tim Steele WALK DATA Distance: 7 miles Typical time: 3 hours Map: Explorer 227; or better still, Town Map of Peterborough (available from any newsagent) Start & Finish: Thorpe Wood Nature Reserve Car Park, PE3 6SS. Where the Thorpe Rd meets Holywell Rd. Terrain: flat, easy going; can be wet underfoot if there has been a lot of rain.

The context Peterborough is an ancient town that has been transformed since 1967 when it was awarded new town status; at which point the city’s population multiplied threefold in a single generation from 70,000 to 200,000 as the numerous townships were created. But because the growth was carefully planned, there were also two huge benefits; a well thought-through road system that whisks traffic around the city away from the residential areas; and germane to this walk, the creation of the immensely impressive Nene Park.

Places of Interest Thorpe Wood This beautiful ancient woodland consists of a canopy of oak and ash with hazel and field maple below. The northern section is actively managed by traditional coppicing with baskets weaved around the stools to stop deer and rabbits grazing on them. The ground flora is diverse here, especially in spring when there are lots of wood anemones and a spectacular display of bluebells. There are a number of very large mature oaks, which provide an excellent home for a range of invertebrates. Woodpeckers can be frequently heard tapping in the summer. Ferry Meadows Country Park Nene Park was conceived as part of the town’s 1968 expansion master plan. The Nene Park Trust is tasked “to provide for the recreation of the public by the provision of a park for the benefit of the inhabitants of Peterborough and visitors with the object of improving the conditions of life for such persons.” From a total of 2,535 acres within the Trust’s management control, 658 acres are dedicated to Ferry Meadows country park, 259 acres for two 18 hole golf courses and 82 acres for organised recreation such as horse riding, rowing, watersports and trout fishing; the remaining 1,535 acres are in private ownership with managed pathways and informal areas. The landscape of the Park is varied, providing a range of natural habitats, informal areas and visitor attractions, including woodland, flood plain meadow and arable fields.

The sculptures at Thorpe Meadows Much of the Peterborough Sculpture Trust collection is sited in Nene Park at Thorpe Meadows and includes works by Sir Anthony Caro, Lee Grandjean, Miles Davis and Antony Gormley. For a full map of the sculptures visit www.peterboroughsculpture.org The Boardwalks The Boardwalks are an amphibian reserve, with many different areas: ponds of varying sizes and depths, scrub, marsh, tussocky grassland, and many types of willow, all providing excellent habitats. Longthorpe Tower Longthorpe Tower displays one of the most complete and important sets of 14th century domestic wall paintings in northern Europe. This varied ‘spiritual encyclopaedia’ of worldly and religious subjects includes the Wheel of Life, the Nativity and King David. Check English Heritage for opening times.

The Route 1.

Walk south through Thorpe Wood from the car park, then take a right to cross over the Nene Parkway by the footbridge. Continue (slightly to the right) on the other side, crossing the Thorpe Rd and then crossing the Bluebell footbridge across the River Nene. Continue onwards until your reach the Ham Bridge, at which point you cross left over it. Then take the path bearing round to the left, which soon begins to run alongside the river again, with Ham Mere and the bird hide on your right. Cross the Goldie Bridge, then the Nene Valley railway line and turn immediately left towards the city centre, on the south side of the tracks. Cross back over the railway and river at the lock and sluices, and then take the path under the Nene Parkway. Walk along the south side of the Rowing Lake, enjoying the many interesting sculptures. Then head right back towards the river and the route goes along the fascinating Boardwalks across muddy ground. The path

Proceed west down Church St, then Cowgate and take the underpass at Bourges Boulevard to the main railway bridge. Immediately you have crossed the railway bridge, take the steps down to your left and proceed south down River Lane back onto Thorpe Meadows. Follow the route back west on the northern side of the meadows this time, until you reach the hotel again by the rowing lake. Head up to the roundabout, cross Thorpe Rd and then the continuation of Thorpe Rd, onto a public footpath through a narrow gap in the hedge leading across the field up to Thorpe Hall. Pass by the entrance to Thorpe Hall, and then take a footpath just to the right of a car park at the far end of the Hall, leading onto Thorpe Park Rd. Turn left, and then right into Thurlestone Close, through to Harewood Gardens, left towards Melrose Close and then cutting through to the Thorpe Rd. Cross over left to Longthorpe Tower and then take the estate path back to The Thorpe Wood nature reserve. Turn right in the woods and return to your car.

then rejoins the main riverside path. Proceed to the Town Bridge, climb up the steps, cross the main road and proceed towards the Key Theatre and then the delightful Lido. Cross the Bishop’s Rd into the SW corner of the tiny but lovely Bishop’s Rd Gardens. Exit out the NE side, and proceed through the cathedral precinct gates and thence to the cathedral. Magic with Marble

JAMES PRIDES HIMSELF ON NEVER HAVING TURNED DOWN A JOB BECAUSE IT IS TOO BIG FOR HIM TO HANDLE.

James Elliott is a specialist in his field, creating complex and detailed designs using mainly marble. James’ work is in demand nationally and internationally - but he chose to open his state-of-the-art workshop in the village of Market Overton in Rutland. We visited him there and were impressed beyond expectations. Words by David Howgrave-Graham, photographs by Elli Dean

are marbles require rare talents, and for the best materials only the best workmanship will suffice. James Elliott has devoted his entire professional life to perfecting his knowledge of marble, stone and semi-precious stones. His expertise and craftsmanship is on display at many of the great heritage sites both in the United Kingdom and abroad. The antiquity of the materials James works with is in stark contrast to the modernity of the engineering solutions he provides to his clients. The first result a client will see from a commission is a precise and meticulous 3D computer drawing of the work they envisage. James’ firm belief is that all the technical demands of any project must be fully resolved before any work commences. All too often he finds himself being required by architects to rescue projects which other stonemasons have under-estimated. Sourcing the correct materials for any job has not only involved James in extensive overseas travel, but fully understanding the properties of the stone he is working has also obliged him to acquire a good knowledge of geology. The extensive variety of marble formations requires a deep sensitivity to the way each of them must be handled, and James has unparalleled skill in cutting even the most fragile materials. With the amount of heritage work James

undertakes, it is fundamental to his work that he has a thorough understanding of architectural history. While he frequently devises innovative engineering solutions to seemingly intractable problems, he is constantly aware of the need for his work to be sympathetic to the original spirit of the building in which he is working. He is also used to working with the very specific requirements of listed buildings. James’ workshop houses his heavy investment in the latest equipment required to handle the scale of the jobs for which he is commissioned. James prides himself on never having turned down a job because it is too big for him to handle. In spite of the above there are still jobs that need hand crafting and James is renowned for producing hand finishes that others can’t, and when complex carving is required James can ensure it is of the highest standard. Not all the work James undertakes is historical. He enjoys fruitful working relationships with some of the greatest modern designers and architects ensuring that their

How it all began... “It was during a family holiday in 2005 when I realised that there was a massive gap in the market for genuinely family-friendly holiday accommodation after a near catastrophic holiday in France, where my then 2 year old, fell into an unenclosed swimming pool. Quite aside from the very obvious dangers of swimming pools, I realised that being on holiday with tots was a mission in itself, fraught with questions, worries, concerns and that families like mine have a very special set of requirements. I could see that there were plenty of ways to improve this situation. It seemed so obvious that I was frankly stunned that nobody had done anything about it. I launched the business in April 2007 with just 9 family-friendly villas and cottages in France which I had personally visited and vetted to ensure quality control, child safety (particularly with regards to pool safety) and the provision of all the kit that families with small children need.” Before Tots to Travel was born, Wendy had a variety of other jobs, from bread-crumbing pigs’ trotters in a bistro as a student, to selling aerial photos door to door in America and a summer season in Greece! She then worked for UK Sport, specialising in developing the World Class Performance Programme for Olympic level athletes, before becoming a primary school teacher. Inspiration, Motivation, Vision and Drive... Wendy, like many working mothers is driven to be the best she can be, whilst also being the best role model and mother for her three children. Orchard can make your lifestyle dream a reality The Orchard story Orchard has grown organically over the years because so many of its clients wanted a company that could manage their whole renovation project, from installing the latest ‘A’ rated windows throughout the house, or installing bi-folding door systems, to complete kitchen installations that require removing internal walls to form large living spaces, or carrying out full house renovations. So the two Marks (Atkinson and Bush) developed a business that manages the entire project, including seeking all relevant building regulations, all necessary electrical and gas installations and flooring requirements, so that clients can get complete peace of mind that every aspect of a project is taken care of. She has been joined by Stuart, who has been designing kitchens for several years. But perhaps the best way of demonstrating the Orchard experience is by taking a look at two recent projects.

Stylish, modern kitchen Margery Nicholls lives in the first house to be built in Northfields, in the early 1870s. Whilst its exterior says ‘period house’, the interior has been done throughout in a cool, modern, but not too minimalist style which works incredibly well. Margery had first used the two Marks 15 years or so ago when they were just setting out. They installed the windows on a garage alongside her house that created a study and extra bedroom. Nearly 15 years later she called them back to install a couple of doors; and after that, to discuss a big kitchen project. She wanted to knock through from the kitchen to the under-utilised dining room and create a much

bigger space. Maxine Couch, Orchard’s kitchen designer, came up with some layout ideas, and Margery spotted a kitchen she liked on display at the Scotgate showroom. Mark Atkinson was her project manager, and she liked the way that early in the process he told her, ‘We do understand that people change their minds!’ It made her much more relaxed about the whole process. And a week before the building project was due to begin he brought the whole team round to introduce themselves, which also made her feel more comfortable. “I was delighted with the service from start to finish,” Margery told us. “Firstly they offer a complete service – plumbing, electrics, building, flooring, you name it, so there is only one point of contact. Secondly they did everything to time and to a high standard, and Mark was always on hand if anything needed discussing.” And is she pleased with the result? “Delighted. It still puts a smile on my face every time I walk in. And friends come round and want to know who did it.”

Stunning Orangery Mark and Charlotte Hayhurst moved into their delightful home in Casterton back in 2010. Their garden leads down to the River Gwash, with a willow tree and a swing over the river. They wanted to increase the size of their home, whilst keeping it very much looking as an integral part of the house; so they opted for an Orangery. The result is brilliant – a very light space, a very stylish space and a very sociable space, with an island in the middle of the kitchen that can seat at least six. “We chose Orchard,” Mark told me, “as they had already done a couple of Dempsey windows for us, and we were pleased with the quality and service. Mark Bush was the project manager, and we worked together with our ideas and they then worked up more developed plans. “The start of the project was a little unusual and challenging… an archaeologist had to be on site as the foundations were created, as we are near the site of a Roman settlement (nothing

was found). But a more immediate challenge was that there was no hard ground, so we had to make a decision to go with a floating frame, which took a bit of extra time and resource. Orchard dealt with this well.” Stuart of Orchard was in charge of the day-today building work. “He always wanted the best results,” Mark told us. “For example, he bevelled the stone at each corner of the Orangery to give a smoother look. He was a perfectionist, which we really appreciated.” “The other thing we liked was that Orchard did the whole project – the building works, the Orangery, the kitchen, the patio, the walls, and the drive – just one point of contact.” And the result? “We are delighted with it. A classy snack

A great snack for a party and ideal for nibbling on during the World Cup with a beer, says Sean Hope…

Fruits of the sea I adore seafood so it’s always exciting when we launch our Fruits de Mer menu at The Olive Branch. Throughout July and August we’ll be serving up seafood caught on the Norfolk dayboats and delivered fresh to the kitchen. Dishes will include clams in chilli butter, crevettes with lemon aioli and crabs baked in their shells – but the menu will change depending on what’s available.

he recipe I’m sharing this month is one I recently submitted for a competition run by Leffe beer, called the Leffe Gastro Bites contest. Not surprisingly, Stilton beignet fritters go very well with a Leffe, and I hope to get the chance to sit back with a bottle or two during the World Cup this month. Fingers crossed!

Stilton beignets with Bramley apple sauce Serves 4 For the beignets • 250ml water • 50g butter • 70g plain flour • 100g grated Cropwell Bishop Stilton • 4 eggs • Half a tsp of English mustard • Salt • Pepper • Vegetable oil, for frying 1. Bring the water to a simmer with the butter, then add the flour. 2. Cook slowly for about eight minutes until the mixture leaves the sides of the pan. 3. Remove the mixture from the heat and stir in the grated Stilton. 4. Separate three of the eggs and add three egg yolks and one whole egg along with the mustard, salt and a pinch of ground black pepper. 5. Pipe balls of the mixture into a preheated fryer at 180°C and fry the beignets for two minutes until crisp. Drain well on a paper towel before serving.

For the apple sauce • 3 Bramley apples – peeled, cored and chopped • 50g caster sugar • Splash of local apple juice • Knob of butter 1. Place all ingredients into a large saucepan, bring to the boil and cook until soft (around five minutes). 2. Strain the cooked apples when soft and blend until smooth. 3. Allow to cool to room temperature, then serve! To assemble, wipe a little apple sauce onto a slate or plate, arrange the Stilton beignets, add a little crumbled Stilton and garnish with a few fresh garden leaves and crumbled crispy bacon.

sojourn in the French Alps running a chalet business was an opportunity for Nick and Nicky Brake to indulge in their love of food and wine. “And of sharing it,” says Nicky. “It was during our time spent living in France that I discovered the joys of charcuterie – from saucisson to Confit de Canard. I was hooked and it was the one product that we never failed to bring back home with us, as at the time we could find hardly anyone producing it in this country,” adds Nick. Of their return to the UK Nick says, “I was thinking vineyards but all things considered we decided against. So, if not wine it had to be food.” The Brakes in the meantime had moved into Chestnut Farm. A spectacular setting and well positioned on the edge of the village of Braunston in Rutland with outdoor stables for conversion to what is now a state of the art butchery and production kitchen. As part of the equipping Nick has invested in a Stagionello Salami cabinet that aims to give the professional artisan producer of traditional salami complete control over the process from fermentation right through the fermentation cycle. The journey to production has been an adventure that has demanded skill and commitment. “For me the year at The School of Artisan Food on the Welbeck Estate in Nottinghamshire did exactly what I had hoped - I went to the school with the intention of learning the skills required to set up a new food related business. I finished the year passing the diploma in Butchery & Charcuterie with distinction.” “We were very fortunate to have a brilliant mix of teachers,” says Nick. “It has taken a while to get the new business up and running – I am sure it would have been a more arduous task without the knowledge I gained from my time at the school, let alone the contacts that I made.” It was while studying at the School of Artisan Food that Nick met tutors Rich Summers and Chris Moorby. Rich and Chris are both highly skilled butchers who bring their individual strengths and expertise to the venture. Rich’s interest in butchery has been life-long, when at the age of 11 he was feeding a farmer’s pigs after school alongside a little washing up job at a local butchers. This was only the

beginning for Rich, “I grew up with an interest in getting to know about every element of the job.” A stint in an abattoir gave more, as well as working as a stock man in the old cattle market in Leicestershire. With over two decades of experience, Rich’s wealth of knowledge of the local area in terms of suppliers and potential markets, combined with his keen interest in native breeds, artisan butchery techniques, product development, consultancy and a desire to share his knowledge means that he has become an integral part of the company. Recipes for charcuterie are inspired by Rich’s Polish heritage – caraway, coriander, paprika and marjoram help to create the robust yet fragrant flavours of Rutland Charcuterie’s Rutland Smoky, salami, beef biltong, hot smoked duck breast and Prosciutto. Chris brings his expertise of over 35 years of working as a traditional artisan butcher to this venture. He has worked in several sectors of the meat industry, from production and technical management to product development and quality assurance and more recently as a

teacher and champion of artisan produce. Chris will be teaching hands on demonstrations in salami making and other courses at the Rutland Charcuterie Company. Chris is hot on the meat science where every element of the process is logged. “From food producer to production there is a consistency that is created that makes it possible for a small artisan business to succeed. This has been my priority throughout and with the team that we have here and the seriously delicious products we have developed, I believe we offer something really outstanding in terms of British Charcuterie,” says Nick. Nick sent me home with some wonderful samples for tasting and I was inspired to make paella that evening to complement the Rutland Smokies, biltong and hot smoked ham. recently popped in to the all-new Rutland Charcuterie Company in Braunston, Rutland. In addition to finding what’s possibly the most delicious sausage ever – make a note to try the ‘Rutland Smokey’ as soon as you can – plus some very feisty biltong, I discovered that founder Nick Brake had studied at The School of Artisan Food near Worksop before setting up his new operation. The School of Artisan Food might be a few miles away from our zone but it’s within striking distance and I thought it was worth bringing to your attention – to my mind, every food lover should know about it. Located on Welbeck Estate in north Nottinghamshire, the School and its courses are at the beating heart of Britain’s artisan food and drink movement. And around it cluster a brilliant farm shop, cheesemaker, bakery, several farmers producing excellent meats, a brewery and a chocolate maker.

The grain of an idea The idea for the school came about in 2006 when Gareth Kennedy and Alison Swan Parente set up a bakery on Welbeck Estate. They quickly discovered that there were very few skilled bakers around. Conversations with friends in the artisan food world revealed similar skills shortages in many areas, including cheesemaking and butchery. “Gareth and Alison had a lightbulb moment and realised that a centre of food excellence was needed to train people in the skills of artisan food production,” says Joe Piliero, Artisan School director. The nowdefunct East Midlands Development Agency agreed, and offered £900,000 to help set up the School. The School now has state of the art facilities for teaching butchery, cheesemaking, baking, preserving, brewing and chocolate making. It has a jaw-dropping lecture theatre, superb canteen (it would have been rude not to) and seriously impressive kit. Teachers include renowned experts like baker Emmanuel Hadjiandreou, butcher Kate Hill and cheesemaker Val Bines. “Demand is strong for all the courses,” says Joe. “Baking and butchery possibly attract the most interest but it’s pretty evenly spread. Very generally speaking, our full diploma students tend to be people looking at career changes. They might be home bakers looking to set up small-scale businesses, or food lovers with an interest in cheese who want to open a deli. Our next diploma starts in September. Having enthusiasm and passion are the most important requirements – food experience is not essential.” Of those diploma students who have recently graduated, in addition to Rutland’s Nick Brake, another success story is Michael Thompson from Ireland, who secured a job with Leicestershire Handmade Cheese Company before going on to set up Mike’s Fancy Cheese – Northern Ireland’s first raw-milk cheesemaker. But you don’t have to go down the diploma route. Short courses start at around £50 and include an Introduction to Artisan Cider Making (one day), Pro Blue Cheesemaking (three days), Curing and Smoking (one day) and Autumn Preserves (one day). The School of Artisan Food is leading the way in training UK food producers, keeping that all-important knowledge alive. It’s a jewel in the crown of Britain’s artisan food movement.

The Welbeck Estate A cluster of small, indendent food and drink producers thrives around The School of Artisan Food on the Welbeck Estate. Welbeck Farm Shop opened in October 2006 following conversations between shop manager Michael Boyle and his friend Joe Parente, whose family own Welbeck Estate. Joe had the idea of bringing good, locally sourced food and drink to estate visitors, and Michael had an agricultural background, so it made sense for them to work together to open a farm shop. “The area was a food desert before 2006. It’s taken time but now it’s buzzing,” says Michael. As Welbeck Farm Shop was selling its first sausage, Joe Schneider, in partnership with Randolph Hodgson from London’s Neal’s Yard Dairy, moved his Stichelton cheesemaking operation to Welbeck. The synergy created by farm shop and cheesemaker working side by side clearly had a contagious effect. Next, Welbeck Bakehouse was tempted to moved to Welbeck, taking a vacant building. Then the School of Artisan Food joined the party, making use of the estate’s old fire station. The latest arrivals are Shelly Preston, who runs chocolate maker Boutique Aromatique, a shop within Welbeck Farm Shop that stocks sublime artisan chocolates; and Welbeck Abbey Brewery, run by Claire Monk, producing fantastic beer that you can buy in the shop and elsewhere.

A police officer’s iconic uniform is a universally recognised and generally reassuring symbol of authority and probity in Britain. Harjit Gammon visits the station at Stamford to look beyond the uniform at the individuals who form the frontline of policing in our community

n interest sparked by the 1920s station on North Street culminated in an interview with Inspector Mike Burnett. Burnett has been based at Stamford, with responsibility for a wide area extending from Stamford to South Witham, for the past two years. A former Metropolitan Police Officer located at Cannon Row station, opposite Downing Street, he is a Lincolnshire man, with 27 years policing experience, returned to his roots. Spreading his time across the region, in Stamford he is aided by beat officer Sergeant Jules Laybourne and a team of five PCSOs (Police Community Service Officers). PCSOs are the bedrock of Neighbourhood Policing, attending to civil issues such as Anti Social Behaviour, Car Theft and Nuisance Neighbour Disputes, while police officers from the Neighbourhood Response Team, who are the first port of call for incidents, are principally concerned with dealing with criminal matters such as assault, fights and the like.

The Station Located centrally on North Street, in a building dating to the 1920s, the station has over the years expanded and shrunk in reflection of police budget growth and constraint, whether as a result of central Government dictats or those of regional local council, South Kesteven District Council funding allocations for policing. Originally built as a single storey construction, a second floor was added in the 1950s, Enquiry Officer Colin Evans tells me as we take a tour of the building. In its prime the station had an Inspector’s house to the left of the front (now The Stamford Hearing Centre),

and the Superintendent’s accommodation to the right (demolished some years ago). In addition there were around half a dozen police houses opposite the tennis courts with further police properties in the town in Exeter Gardens. Internally there have been considerable changes too. The cells, three for men and two for women, and the custody sergeant’s booking room, where people were photographed, finger printed and logged in, have been decommissioned and are now variously locker and store rooms, though the original institutional brown tiles in the cell passage and cells remain. Until 1991, a full suite of custody rooms including prisoner toilets, exercise yard, doctor’s room, soundproof interview room with full taping facilities and, an intoximeter (for breath testing) were in use, for holding individuals in custody for up to five days. Subsequent changes to custody rules and funding however mean custodial cases are now taken to Grantham or Spalding. The latest effect of reductions in funding will result in measures including the closure of Stamford station at weekends. Inspector Burnett explains, “Most of the business of people coming to the station tends to happen Monday to Friday, so to accommodate reduced budgets, the decision has been made to close the station at weekends. But a telephone located outside the station may be used by members of the public to ring the control centre, who will log incidents and summon an officer if necessary, since the core business of policing can happen anytime, day or night, 24 hours a day due to the weekend and night

time economy and anti-social behaviour in the community”.

The PCSOs The PCSOs are often the visible face of the Police in the community. Their mission is to engage with the public, asking questions, gathering information on the public’s concerns and bringing matters to the beat officers’ attention. They are actively involved in community projects such as marking property for school pupils, security marking for allotment holders, taking measures to prevent metal theft and dissuading anti-social behaviour.

The Enquiry Officers Colin Evans is one of two Enquiry Officers at Stamford, and first point of contact for visitors to the station. The enquiry officers are situated in the former Sergeant’s office, which now functions as the Control Room & Admin Office and is equipped with CCTV cameras focusing on areas of the town and computers linking the station to the national police network. Enquiry Officer Evans is the longest serving officer at Stamford, and has been at the station for 22 years, following a career in the RAF. Recalling the vibrancy of the station in times past, he revels in the satisfaction of the job, committed to helping the retinue of visitors to the station in their moments of distress. Whether dealing with an assault, domestic conflict, crime or the loss of a dog, he embodies the qualities of empathy, dedication, respect and professionalism of the force’s vision with a human touch.
