Art in town Original art is something worth investing in, and it doesn’t (always) have to break the bank. You can spend as much as £2,000 on an original piece or £20 on a print - but if you love the piece then it was a good buy. Stamford has it’s fair share of galleries, shops and even markets where you can buy original art. Here is just a taster of few of many artists selling their art in Stamford

Holistic Therapies Genevieve Potter looks at how holistic therapies can help to heal physical and emotional issues

Reiki with Emma Lannigan I’ve tried many alternative therapies over the years but never Reiki, so I was excited to experience it for the first time in the reassuringly experienced hands of Emma Lannigan, who is a ‘Reiki Master Practitioner’. Reiki is an ancient Japanese healing therapy, which you experience fully clothed, either lying down or in a comfortable position, during which the practitioner acts as a highly attuned conductor to help restore balance and positive energy. Reiki works on a physical, emotional and spiritual level. Reiki isn’t designed to replace conventional medicine, but in the hands of an experienced practitioner like Emma, the natural healing works to open up the body’s chakras (our internal energy pathways) and remove emotional and physical energy blocks. Emma explained the benefits of reiki. These include improved relaxation and sleep, through to building self-esteem and confidence and increasing energy levels. I had no idea of what to expect but was looking forward to 50 minutes of lying still. After being cocooned in Emma’s beautifully calming treatment room, she took me through some guided breathing, then I closed my eyes whilst Emma moved around the couch. The heat which Emma generated without even touching me was pleasantly surprising. My tummy became quite noisy and my throat felt slightly tickly, but otherwise I can only describe the session as deeply, wonderfully relaxing. I lost all sense of time and I can honestly say that I felt more ‘Zen-like’ afterwards than I have in years; beautifully chilled and almost as if I had a force field around me. ‘Mind over Matter’ integrated weight control programme The Broad Street Practice in Stamford is offering a solution to the diet conundrum, by providing a combined approach to weight loss and weight control. This innovative approach is being adopted by Claire, a 37-year old woman from Stamford who is currently trapped in a cycle of yo-yo dieting. This is her case study:Claire is 37 years old and has been a yo-yo dieter since she was a teenager. She’s at the point now, where her energy and motivation are low – each time that she puts the weight back on, her self-esteem plummets and she’s become obsessed with fat and calorie counting. She is also worried about the effect this is having on her children. What makes it even more difficult for her is her stressful job and family life. On her most stressful days she comfort eats and even though she knows that this isn’t helping her, she’s unable to stop. Afterwards the guilt and upset make it much harder to stick to her weight loss goals. Claire is the perfect candidate for a non-diet approach, combining nutrition and hypnosis. Through professional nutritional education, Claire will learn how to optimally nourish her body, breaking the cycle of yo-yo dieting. The watermill and its associated buildings have been restored to full working order, incorporating a small hydro-electric water turbine and interpretation of the site which dates back to Roman Times. The mill will also be grinding flour and visitors can meet some of the characters who have kept the ancient skill alive throughout the centuries. Stamford TWO LITTLE BIRDS Antonia Scott speaks to Vicky Palmer and finds out how to get started sewing!

HOW IT ALL BEGAN Vicky Palmer is the founder of ‘Two Little Birds’a local business making decorative accessories for the home using traditional and modern appliqué and embroidery techniques. Vicky also specialises in sewing courses, sewing parties, and private tuition for all ages and abilities. “Since I was a small child, I loved drawing, painting and making things, so on finishing school I followed a natural path to Art College studying Theatre Design and spent the next five years making costumes for theatre, film and television. On moving to Stamford in the mid-90s, I started my own business designing and making bespoke bridal wear, which was a rewarding, but hectic time!” Having a family changed Vicky’s work/life balance priorities, but provided the perfect opportunity for a new career. “Creating ‘Two Little Birds’ gave me the chance to keep designing and making things from fabric and thread, and teaching others to sew and develop traditional skills is one of the most rewarding aspects of my job.” Four years ago when Vicky started teaching sewing classes, the greatest demand was for soft furnishings, and while these are still popular, she has recently seen a surge of interest in dressmaking, no doubt fuelled by the popular television programme, ‘The Great British Sewing Bee’. The sewing courses have evolved over time but Vicky always works hard to make sure there is something for all experience and skill levels, so everyone feels they can come along and be comfortable with the project. Class sizes are kept small so she can offer as much guidance as possible and the emphasis is on learning in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere. CHILD FRIENDLY – NEVER TOO YOUNG TO START Last year saw the creation of ‘Make It Fun!’ sewing classes for children which have proved really popular and quickly led to children’s sewing parties. “I was delighted by how many of my young students asked for a sewing machine for Christmas! Like cooking, sewing has become somewhat neglected in our schools, and I have been amazed at how excited and enthusiastic the children are when they are given the opportunity to be creative. I’m very proud to have imparted some skills and stimulated a passion for sewing that will hopefully, stay with them for life.” JOB SATISFACTION “I love meeting new people and being part of

their learning journey, they are a constant source of inspiration. STAMFORD OBSERVATIONS

“Stamford At Rest” Words and Photography by Loo Loo Rose

EATH is often an uncomfortable subject for people in Britain. We don’t open up about death easily. This seems strange to me, as it was not so long ago the Victorians celebrated death so intensely. Nowadays we preserve the memory of the dead under a carved piece of stone. There is something to be said for having a physical, permanent place to visit, which must help console those experiencing loss and help them feel close to the person. I have come for a wander through Stamford’s quietest place, the cemetery. It is so very silent; a place so peaceful that even the birds remain respectful and keep their songs to a minimum. Perhaps a solitary walk through a graveyard should put me on edge, but I have never felt so at peace. I have discovered a place where my thoughts can be as deep as I allow. As I walk off path, I take a moment to appreciate the rows of graves. Masses of people lay at rest here, all somehow connected to Stamford. Perhaps they grew up here, perhaps they died here, perhaps they loved here. For some reason their loved ones chose to bury them in Stamford town. The gravestone is your final statement to the world. It is your very last physical display. It will feature your concluding identification which sums up your life. This carved information acts as a message to all that pass by. I start to wonder about the untold stories of the people who lay underneath the tombstones. As I lean in closer, I read some of these messages which are extremely personal, along with some which are quite generic. Either way, it is a privilege to get a glimpse into something so very intimate. Some people buried here lived a long, full life, dying at ages over eighty. Some of the more poignant stones tell tales of deaths much younger. One which sticks in my mind was as young as seventeen, which is even less than half a life. And it is hard to ignore the very modern looking stones scattered around where I can almost smell the freshly laid flowers. This place really makes you think; an area so surrounded by death and yet all I can think about is life and how appreciative I currently feel. I stroll on further, getting deeper in amongst the headstones, some highly extravagant, some more humble, but each representative in some way, featuring small details which tell me about the person who is laid under it. Some graves seem more visited and looked after than others. For me, the more lichen, moss and overgrowth the better. I love to see stones which have sunk into the ground, covered in ivy, which have lived here so long that they are officially part of the cemetery and will eventually become part of the Earth. As I discover more graves, it occurs to me that some of these slabs must be so old that even the once mourning relatives must also be dead too, meaning that no one but the gardener visits them anymore. Even though these graves are crammed in together, each has its own space and presence. Some are actual tombs coming out of the ground and some remind me of coffins. Many are typically gothic and others highly religious. One is so extravagant it is reminiscent of a church steeple. But my absolutely favourite piece in the whole grounds has to be the Stamford angel, whose eyes follow me around as I cross her path. She is deteriorating, desolate and disfigured,

holding up her missing hand with pride, yet she is not threatening. Her haunting, tear stained face protects you on your journey through the cemetery and her robe covered in bird droppings provides a feeling of familiarity. With her perched here you are never alone. This small spot in Stamford is more than just a peaceful cemetery. It is a place to come for comfort and companionship. It is a reminder of nature’s endless cycle, a reminder that life is short. It is a person’s final resting place where loved ones bury them, giving them back to nature. Some are buried in pairs, some buried too soon, but all buried here with the same hope that we will see them again. And until then, we come and lay flowers on their grave.

It is a well-known fact that people often lose the plot to go all out for charity, whether this means getting completely starkers for a calendar or running a marathon dressed in a three man horse suit, in Britain we have seen it all! You could say local band DB5 fall into this category….

n a cold dark winter’s night at the Exeter Arms in Helpston, Andy sipped at his pint pensively as he listened to his fellow comrades provide stichomythic entertainment to his ears. Amid the bountiful banter Andy heard a ladiy’s voice in the distance – she sounded distraught as she spoke about her son who had Cerebral Palsy and it was gradually taking away his ability to walk. She spoke of hope in America where her son could get an operation to walk again but for the huge amount of £20,000 – however this is nothing to enable a child to regain the ability to scamper about. Andy raised the attention of his fellow friends and they rose to the occasion and decided they would help by putting a band together and play one evening at The Exeter Arms to help raise money for this operation! They managed to raise £1,000 with just 12 songs in one evening and this also raised awareness of this lady’s cause and eventually her son was able to go over to America for the operation, which was successful and he is now able to walk which is fantastic. This event took place 5 years ago and now the boys; Chris (Bass), Martin (Drums), Jess (Guitar), Andy (Rhythm Guitar & Vocals) and Leaky (Lead Vocalist) have built up a great array of songs and are loved by many, so they are often entertaining pub goers. The band also play at private functions, parties, weddings, they even played for the Burghley Cricket Ball last year and were exceptional. It always pays off to have some live music at an event to get people dancing. State Pension “Top-up” Scheme This month, Kerry Hilliard of Accountancy firm Stephenson Smart talks about a new top-up scheme for pensioners

ensioners will, from later this year, be able to ‘buy’ up to £25 a week extra State Pension – worth up to £1,300 per year - under a scheme introduced to offer fairness to those pensioners who will not get the new flat rate State Pension, which is due to be introduced from April 2016. In an 18 month period starting October 2015, all those who will reach State Pension age before 6 April 2016 will be given the opportunity to buy the additional pension income. Each additional £1 a week will cost a 65-year-old £890. To receive an extra £5 per week the contribution would be £4,450. The government has identified that the scheme might be particularly attractive to women, who tend to live longer and so will get a better return on their contributions. It may also help the self-employed who currently only qualify for the basic State Pension. The new top up does not replace the existing system which allows people to fill gaps in their contribution record where they have not built up entitlement to full basic State Pension. The government is advising pensioners to ensure that they have full basic entitlement before purchasing the new top up. More than skin deep Lisa Claypole started her beauty business in 2002 in a spare room at home. Now her rural enterprise has been nominated for Salon of the Year by prestigious brand Environ. Words: Fiona Cumberpatch

based. “It makes changes, and works at a deeper level than many brands,” says Lisa. “I’ve seen excellent results with this, even on clients with very sensitive, reactive skin.” Her decision to offer Lipofirm Plus has proved especially popular with clients, both male and female. HEN Lisa Claypole started working from home, she chose a flexible job which would fit around her growing family and enable her to live the rural lifestyle she enjoyed in the village of Tansor, East Northamptonshire. But over the years, her enthusiasm has grown, the business has taken off and she has embraced some advanced treatments which require a high level of skill. “I started off giving lovely facials, and massages, and I still do that, but now I specialise in proven advanced treatments,” says Lisa. Examples of these include Microdermabrasion, and the body sculpting, skin-tightening Lipofirm, which are delivered via sophisticated technology. “People want advanced therapies which really give results, but they don’t want risk and they don’t want downtime,” says Lisa. “I try to listen to my clients and what I offer is response to what they’re telling me.” Looking good, says Lisa, is not just about the superficial. “Everyone has their own issues, and if it concerns them, it can really affect their self esteem, even if it’s something that no one else would necessarily notice,” she says. The beauty business is a competitive one, and requires constant training to keep up with the latest developments in skin care and treatment. “I do more training now than I’ve ever done,” admits Lisa. “But the more I learn, the more I want to know. I also believe in treating people holistically. It’s not just about one element or a quick fix: you have to take into account a good diet, hydration and exercise too.” Some of the treatments she offers are expensive: “but they are scientifically proven and they do deliver,” says Lisa. “My clients come to me and they’ve done their research. Quite rightly, they know their stuff, and that’s why I am always striving to learn more. I never take our busy salon for granted.” Though she has a background in accountancy (and before that, three day eventing), Lisa had no ambitions to be a beauty therapist. “I started off with reflexology because I loved having it, and I was fascinated by how it works, and I went on from there,” she says. “But I suppose the crunch came about five years ago when I was involved in a bad accident and my leg was crushed. I was lying in my hospital bed wondering what I would do when I got better, and I suddenly realised that I really wanted to continue my business, I wanted to fight for it. When I came out of hospital, I took on another member of staff and since then, we’ve been growing steadily and I now have a large client base from a 20 mile radius.” Lisa chooses the treatments she offers very carefully. “My reputation is important to me, so I’m not going to opt for the celebrity endorsed choices or the obvious ones,” she says. “I really do my research.” She is passionate about Environ, the South African skincare brand incorporating Vitamin A, which has a massive following in the UK. “I want my toes in the sand and a cocktail in hand” Deborah Pennell moves from Afternoon Tea with our lovely local Vicars last month to hanging out in Cocktail bars this month. Who ever said life was dull?

WAS delighted to oblige when the kind Editor asked me to write on this subject. And who knew that Stamford had so much to offer on a night out in search of Cocktails. It would have been rude not to try just a few. A quote by Willie Gluckstern, a wine writer and reporter says: “In a perfect world, everyone would have a glass of champagne every evening.” I, however, feel in a perfect world everyone should have a Cocktail every evening. After all, variety is the spice of life and champagne gets boring when drunk too often! I’ve learnt loads about Cocktails during my arduous research and one thing that seems to be included in so many is sugar. In the form of granules or sugar syrup it is an important ingredient. I have therefore included a recipe for a sugar syrup to get you started. Basic Sugar Syrup used in many cocktail recipes 1 part sugar 1 part water Bring the water to a boil. Dissolve the sugar into the boiling water, stirring constantly. Once dissolved, remove from the heat. Cool completely and bottle. This can be stored in the fridge in a well, sealed bottle for up to 6 months.

This is the bar in town that reminds me most of the 1988 film Cocktail starring Tom Cruise as a rather handsome Cocktail maker. Behind the bar Jacob, Dominic and the team pull it off. They could sell ice to the Eskimos; their enthusiasm is infectious and they even create their own recipes. Jacob recently created a cocktail that tastes like a lemon cheesecake, but he wasn’t divulging the ingredients. Mama’s Moonshine, a slightly illegal sounding cocktail is another favourite. The venue has so much to offer. Three main areas include the Main Bar and Restaurant, which has a Creole/Cajun style menu and offers a selection of ten popular cocktails. The Voodoo Lounge is open one Thursday a month and every Friday and Saturday, often with live music. The “Bar Upstairs” is a bespoke Cocktail bar which is open from 11pm Saturdays closing late, subject to their licence. This bar can also be booked for Cocktail Making Workshops. A great idea for Hen parties, Birthdays or budding Tom Cruises! I tried their Strawberry Daiquiri, a Mojito, and a Margarita which were fresh, summery and delicious

and a rather extraordinary cocktail prepared in a shot glass called a Squashed Frog, which looked disgusting but tasted like a delicious blend of boiled sweets. I left feeling very happy with the world!

lex Way and Stephen Miskell took over The Stamford Wine Bar seven months ago. It has a relaxed atmosphere with small tables and sophisticated décor. A great place for a girlie night out, or just a quiet drink after work with a few colleagues. From the front it looks quite a small bar but there are other rooms at the back of the property and a very large garden with masses of seating. If the British weather is kind, this is a fabulous place to sit out and drink Cocktails under the stars. The wine bar even has comfy blankets to snuggle under on those chillier nights. Alex, who reminds me of a young 007, makes a mean Gin Martini. Stirred not shaken! Not one for the faint hearted or for those wishing to drive home afterwards, it was delicious but very strong. With a clean and dry taste it is great as an aperitif and palate cleanser. Only half way through the Cocktail, my lovely friend, who was helping me research the article, announced she was feeling rather pie eyed. A warning notice should be plastered all over this one! The wine bar has around 15 types of Gin and offers a range of cocktails – apparently Gin is In. A delicious selection of tapas style food is available to help soak up the alcohol.

love the atmosphere in The Cosy Club whether it’s full or half full it just feels COOL. Formerly the old Royal Mail sorting office its warehouse feel is complemented by shabby chic antique mirrors, sets of antlers on plaques and sofas and comfy chairs for lounging once you’ve finished propping up the bar. It always offers a great night out. Tom (Cruise) Baxter, the Bar Manager and I ran through their amazing list of 19 cocktails, which are categorised into long drinks, short drinks and sparkling. They are also happy to make The Cosy Club Cherry Bakewell – cocktails not on their list. classic country Hotel this place oozes sophistication and charm. The owner, Ed Burrows goes for simple but delicious cocktails. There is a good variety on the menu which should keep the most discerning guest happy and they would be only too pleased to make ones not included on the menu, if they have the ingredients. Inevitably, a lot contain Champagne and the one Ed chose as his hotel’s signature cocktail was eye opening and delicious. Called the Hibiscus Fizz, it is simply a wild hibiscus flower preserved in a syrup which has Champagne or Prosecco poured over it. The bubbles from the Champagne stream off the flower and open it up in the bottom of the glass. The Hibiscus flower looks magical, rather like a miniature pink water lily, and has a delicious pomegranate and rhubarb flavour. I have never come across these before but I gather they are easy to come by on the internet even though they appear to be imported from Australia. Ed suggests pimping a plain Mojito with the Hibiscus by adding the syrup that they are steeped in and using the flower and fresh mint as The Barnsdale Lodge Hibiscus Fizz – a garnish. The Champagne Bar, as it is known, is located through the Lounge area next to The Walter Scott room. It’s not your typical Champagne bar, there is no glitzy décor or funky music, just a comfy seating area with a very impressive bar stuffed high with spirits. Tracy changes the Cocktail menu three times a year adding a seasonal twist. There is also a colourful, thirst quenching non-alcoholic alternative. The George’s most popular Cocktail during the summer is the Strawberry Mojito. This looks impressive and is very easy to drink with the delicious flavour of summer strawberries steeped with lime and vodka. One to be careful with as I expect after two or three you will suddenly hit the floor. The upside is you are drinking one, two or three… of your five a day!

There are lots of areas in The Crown where you can sit and drink cocktails and the courtyard offers a really good outdoor space. The outdoor Pimms bar with big screen TV has a great atmosphere and will be showing top class sporting events such as Wimbledon. Naomi Schein and her great team of bar staff are all trained in cocktail making and the hotel offers a good variety. She stressed that they use large shots and really top end brands for their cocktails. Naomi is convinced this is very important, as it reflects in the end product. Again the Mojito took the crown as the most popular Cocktail but I tried a delicious Espresso Martini made by Josh, who looks scarily like Olly Murs. I failed to ask if he could sing too! Rather like an iced coffee but with the addition of alcohol – who would turn their nose up at that? An instant caffeine hit.

his hotel boasts probably the largest outdoor terrace in town and one that is perfect for drinking cocktails on during the summer evenings. Alternatively there is the Olympic Bar and beautiful conservatory. Peter Brighouse, their recently appointed General Manager, is on hand to help and advise. I was offered a house favourite, The Pinkster, which is a very simple, good looking and delicious cocktail. A smart, pink Gin and Tonic with some fresh raspberries thrown in for good measure. Perfect for summer drinking, Pinkster Gin is the brainchild of a frustrated chartered accountant and is produced nearby in Cambridge. Fresh raspberries are steeped in the core spirit, which has been triple distilled so it offers a pure clean taste. They have a selection of Cocktails on the menu and are happy to oblige if you are looking for your favourite tipple, as long as they have the ingredients on the shelf. Another William Cecil favourite is a Bloody Good Mary. This contains Somerset distilled, organic Godminster Horseradish Vodka. The Godminster brand is wonderful for cocktail making as it offers two or three interesting and inspiring organic vodkas. Adding some of their Elderflower vodka to Champagne or Prosecco can make a simple yet sophisticated cocktail.

A View of 16 British Mountains by Simon Ingram

“T

HERE are more reasons for hills than being steep, and reaching only high.” Simon Ingram’s book opens with this particularly apposite epigraph taken from Norman MacCaig’s poem “High Up on Suilven”. As any decent epigraph should, it captures the essence of this unusual text. I say unusual because it isn’t what you would expect from a book on mountains. It’s not a practical guide to mountaineering. Neither is it a Ranulph Fiennes-style tale of survival in extreme conditions. It is something different. There is an existential edge to it. It is, at bottom, an exploration of the relationship between humanity and nature, people and the mountains that dominate their landscapes. I caught up with Simon for a coffee in Stamford’s Cosy Club. A young man in his mid30s, he looks particularly tired as he sits down. He has just become a father and the sleepless nights that go with this, combined with a job as Editor of Trail Magazine, are taking their toll. Still, this does not dampen his enthusiasm for his topic. He is clearly besotted with the mountains of the British Isles and all the stories that he assures me are inscribed in their craggy rock faces. What made him decide to write Between the Sunset and the Sea? “As a journalist, I’d hear these stories and come across these characters and I guess curiosity got the better of me and I started digging deeper and collecting little bits of research that I’d come across”. Initially, Simon tells me, he wanted to write a history book, one that would preserve all of the stories and assorted arcana he’d collected over the years. He wanted to save for posterity those tales that wouldn’t otherwise get much of a hearing by those of us who don’t venture far above sea level. And he has done this, although it is less a history book and more what he describes as “a cross-section of the British mountain experience.” Simon did a science degree at university but soon realised that he really wanted to be a writer (“I would make a dreadful scientist!”). In fact, it was mountains that led him to journalism. After university, he travelled in South America and Alaska and

Simon Ingram talks to William Eichler about how they inspired him to write his first book “There are more reasons for hills than being steep, and reaching only high.” discovered a passion for mountainous terrain and the great outdoors. “I’ve always been interested in exploring the edges of places, the places where civilisation stops and it becomes something else. It’s a case of being alone with the landscape. You feel so privileged to be there.” It is this sense of awe when faced with the grandeur and chaos of nature that continues to draw Simon to mountains. In a chapter of the book entitled “Art” he discusses how this feeling moved the Romantics to compose poetry, letters and even, in the case of Wordsworth, a guide to the Lake District (a book Simon believes is far superior to his poetry). There is a quotation in this chapter from the philosopher Edmund Burke, who describes this as a sense of the sublime: it is “not pleasure, but a sort of delightful horror...tranquility tinged with terror.” And, according to Simon, anyone can experience this. “[Enjoying mountains] doesn’t require you to be a superman. It doesn’t require you to risk life and limb. You can just go up there and enjoy it. It’s a challenge on whatever level you want it to be.” This is no macho message about rushing to the top or pushing the limits. It’s more about the philosophical, the aesthetic or, if you are so inclined, the spiritual, experience of exploring Britain’s vast mountainscapes. So, if you need an escape from the daily grind and you’re feeling claustrophobic in your office (perhaps the modern equivalent of William Blake’s “dark satanic mill”) then a trip to the Lakes to experience some of that “delightful horror” might be for you. You can go with a copy of Trail Magazine and Between the Sunset and the Sea and you might be surprised at just how big these seemingly small islands really are.

Learn something new with Uppingham Summer School The summer programmes offers something for just about every taste and interest

PPINGHAM Summer School has been running a programme of residential and day courses in the heart of rural Rutland during the summer holidays for more than 15 years now; courses cover a multitude of different interests including music, drama, sport, science and technology, art and creative writing. Although many people are aware of the courses for children, fewer people know that there are also some excellent opportunities for adults to learn something new. The range of courses for adults has been expanded this year, and includes a number of highlights. ADULTS’ COURSES New this year is a course focussing on the ancient art of Icon Painting (29 June-3 July); led by award winning local artist Alan Parker, participants will learn how to gild and paint in the traditional Byzantine style using 24 carat gold leaf. Also on the art front, renowned artist David Kirk will be running a Landscape Painting course from 6–10 July. David regularly holds successful exhibitions of his paintings in galleries throughout the UK, including a recent exhibition at the Goldmark Gallery. Another new course ideal for anyone who enjoys singing is English Choral Music from the Romantic Era. Running from 9-13 August, the course will explore some of the best English choral music including Parry, Elgar and Rutter, and it ends with a full ensemble concert in Uppingham School Chapel. Previous singing experience is not necessary, and everyone is welcome! Home crafts are very much in vogue at present, and there are a number of courses with this theme including Mosaic and Stained Glass Making, Needle and Wet Felting, Machine Knitting, Upholstery and Chair Caning and Rush Weaving. For those who feel they might ‘have a book in them’, Wild Words is a new course for anyone interested in creative writing, whether a complete beginner or someone wishing to extend their skills further. The course is offered as either a one-day or five-day workshop from 9-13 August. CHILDREN’S COURSES The Uppingham Summer School children’s courses are as popular as ever with a range that definitely includes something for everyone. Advanced young strings players and pianists have the opportunity to benefit from expert

tuition for two days during the Chamber Music Weekend (2426 July), whilst young orchestral musicians of all ages and all abilities are welcomed during Young Musicians’ Week (27-31 July). Budding rock musicians and bands can have a week of writing, recording and performing their own material during Total Music Powerhouse (3-7 August) whilst Jazz Big Band Week (27-31 July) is a fantastic opportunity to experience playing in a jazz ensemble and learning about jazz repertoire and improvisational skills. Thespians and those who dream of being on the West End stage have been catered for too, and can either take part in From Page to Stage drama week (10-14 August) or experience the bright lights of Broadway and sing lots of show tunes during Musical Theatre Week (3-7 August). There is also a week of Art workshops and a creative writing course, Get Write In (3-7 August). Teenagers love computer games, and they can learn how to design and programme their own games, or build and programme their own robot or drone on the Creative Technologies courses (3-7 August), whilst younger children have the opportunity to learn more about nature, wildlife and the great outdoors on the Nature Explorers course. Also ideal for 6-11 year olds is the fun and interactive history course Time Tunnel Tardis (10-14 August), when youngsters can learn all about vicious Vikings, exciting explorers and more. There are sports galore on offer from 10-13 August, with five different sports courses taking place that week; Hockey, Netball, Rugby, Tennis, and new for this year, Lacrosse. These courses are open to children of all playing abilities, and offer expert coaching and the ideal pre-season training opportunity before going back to school. Uppingham Summer School is delighted to be working with the Windmill House. MatthewWilson, GardenDesigner Antonia Scott caught up with Matthew Wilson, Garden Designer and regular Panellist on Radio 4’s popular Gardener’s Question Time who has recently made the move from London to Rutland with his family, to enjoy our green and pleasant county! FROM CITY TO COUNTRY LIFE – WHY RUTLAND? “I think we were motivated by the same reasons many families escape from London - we wanted more space and for our children to grow up having a strong connection with nature. Rutland is such a beautiful county and has pretty much everything you could want - apart from a coastline! We’d been coming here on holiday since 2010 and it always felt like such a great place to be. In fact our son took his first steps in Rutland!” FAVOURITE PLACES OF INTEREST? “Rutland Water is a great resource and we spend a lot of time there, as well as Fineshade Woods, which is lovely and allows me to do some surreptitious botanising! Welland Garden Centre is on our doorstep and as I’m developing our own garden at home I spend quite a bit of time there. I’m also a sucker for salvage and recycling so enjoy visiting Rutland Garden Classics.” WHAT WAS YOUR EXPERIENCE OF DESIGNING YOUR FIRST SHOW GARDEN AT RHS CHELSEA THIS YEAR? “Terrifying, exhilarating, exhausting! It was unlike anything I’ve ever done before, because despite designing and building dozens of gardens during my career, a Chelsea garden is such a different proposition. Unlike a real garden, a Chelsea garden is designed as a snapshot, a moment in time that has to look pristine for a week and no more. So the plants you choose have to be at their peak for that time, which is a tremendous challenge with an unpredictable British spring. Putting the whole thing together in just 17 days was pretty intense too! The Royal Bank of Canada garden that I designed got a Silver-Gilt medal, which for a first attempt is quite an achievement – although I’d have loved to sneak a Gold medal of course!” AFTER CHELSEA: “I’m currently working on projects in Yorkshire, the South of France and in our core area of business, in London where I’m still the Managing Director at Clifton Nurseries in Little Venice, W9. It would be nice to design some gardens closer to home in Rutland! The Chelsea garden is being relocated to Earl Mountbatten Hospice on the Isle of Wight, under the auspices of a small charity I chair called Greenfingers. We design and build gardens for children’s hospices and this will be the last of ten gardens to be made during my chairmanship, which is a lovely way to sign off after three rewarding years. I’ll be doing some redesign work to make it fit the new space, and then helping out with the planting which is always my favourite part of any garden project. Then there’s more Gardeners Question Time, some filming for Gardeners World later this summer, plus a holiday at some point!”

IME. Keeping time, saving time. On time, in time. The hand of the clock guides us from dawn to dusk and back round again. The ticking heart of our existence, time has preoccupied poets, artists, scientists … since, well, the beginning of time. In England, time began to become part of our day-to-day lives when the Saxons brought us scratch dials. These were a method of dividing their days and nights into eight divisions known as ‘tides’. Later, during the Middle Ages, this model was adapted for ecclesiastical purposes to herald prayer recitals at specific times of the day, known as the Divine Offices. These dials are more commonly referred to as mass dials. True to their name, these dials were generally etched into south-facing walls in order to catch the sun and were approximately 8 - 9” in diameter. Whilst their form varies, these are generally incised circles, arcs or dots with scratched lines radiating from the centrepoint, where the gnomon would be found. Gnomons are the element which projects at right-angles from the centre of the dial and indicates the time of day by the position of the shadows cast. As most gnomons would have been formed of timber pegs, few, if any, survive today. Originally mass dials would have been located near the main door or priest’s door; however, owing to rebuilding and restoration works, they can now be found anywhere on a church building. Of course, over the passage of time, countless of these simple dials could have been lost, discarded or destroyed. Wonderfully, however, Lincolnshire boasts one of the largest collection of surviving mass dials in the country. Patience is required to discover the now faint etchings, but great examples can be found at St Mary’s, Marston, St Peter’s, Bottesford and St Lawrence’s, Sedgebrook. A sun-dial etched by a young Isaac Newton can be found internally at St John the Baptist’s church, Colsterworth. Chronology of design is uncertain; however, in general terms the earliest mass dials were formed of simple circles with radiating lines; these were followed by versions with a bottom arc of pin-point dots. Mass dials with numerals around the circumference are much later and quite rare. In the 14th century more sophisticated mechanical clocks, allowing more accurate time-keeping, were introduced to great English cathedrals, such as Salisbury Cathedral c.1377. Over the course of the next century or so,

use of mechanical clocks gradually spread throughout the country, however mass dials were also still commonly used. As scientific understanding of the relationship between the sun and the Earth increased, the sun-dial we are familiar with today began to rise in popularity. In these, the gnomon was orientated to true celestial North in relation to local latitude. This meant that every location requires bespoke calculations, such that the incised lines are graduated to give accurate local times. Sun-dials can take many forms, but architecturally, they are vertical with a central gnomon; within this complicated science there are, of course, many further classifications. These time-pieces could be formed of many different materials, but stone, bronze and painted schemes are by far the most common. As well as being functional, these sun-dials became attractive centre-pieces on building facades - a celebration of science and art. Indeed, by the end of the 16th century, the humble incised dial had been eclipsed by the fanciful sun-dials and practical mechanical clock. Time had been called on the mass dial.

Throughout the 18th and 19th centuries, sun-dials became far grander affairs of intricate carving, ostentatious decoration and sage inscriptions. Throughout Lincolnshire and the surrounding areas, there are many grand examples. For the very keen, there is even a Cambridgeshire sun-dial trail which winds through Cambridge, Peterborough and Ely. In Stamford, the 18th century sun-dial from All Saints’ Church was recently replaced as part of a Heritage Lottery funded project by the Stamford Civic Society. The original sundial had weathered beyond repair. The new piece, complete with moulded pediment and gilded numerals, enlivens the south elevation and glimmers of the grandeur of the past. Interpretation boards at All Saints’ tell the history of the sun-dial and the conservation works. Indeed, whilst visiting to admire the freshly carved piece, you may wish to pay your respects to the original dial, which has been conserved and displayed within the tower. So, as you look at your watch as you hurry out the door or count the minutes till the end of the working day, remember, time has come a long way.

This walk gives you a flavour of all that is best about North Norfolk – some history, lots of beach and oodles of nature POINTS OF INTEREST Old Hunstanton Lighthouse: The present lighthouse was built in 1840 although there has been a lighthouse on the site since 1665. This first lighthouse was built of wood with an iron basket of burning coals as a light. Hunstanton lighthouse had the world's first parabolic reflector which was built in 1776. The present lighthouse ceased operations in 1922, since when it has been a private residence. Holme Dunes Nature Reserve. Incredibly, over 320 bird species have been recorded here, superbly located as it is to attract migrating birds. What to look for: Spring/summer - avocet, little tern, black-tailed godwit and ring ouzel. Natterjack toad. Autumn/winter - wigeon, pink footed goose, brent goose, snow bunting, long tailed duck, Slavonian grebe, twite, spotted redshank, redstart and pied flycatcher. Year round - curlew, bar-tailed godwit, knot, ringed plover, redshank and lapwing. John Burrows – Flower Arranger Spectacular floral displays set off the treasures of Burghley House. Sue Lee and Jean Orpin have visited the man who creates them

OHN Burrow’s roots are very firmly in Stamford and in gardening. His grandfather ran Wothorpe Nursery and inspired John’s interest while he was still at Primary School. From then on there was never really any doubt about the career he would follow: when his friends craved remote control cars, John saved up and bought himself a greenhouse. While he was still at school he worked at Burghley during the holidays and his work experience was with Rassells of Little Bytham. John left Stamford for four years to study first at Riseholme College near Lincoln then at Pershore Horticultural College. On the day he left college he was offered a job at Burghley and ten years later he had worked his way to the top. John is now Head Gardener at Burghley House and he is also Chairman of Stamford Horticultural Society. FLOWER ARRANGING AT BURGHLEY HOUSE Flower arranging at Burghley House has passed from generation to generation of gardeners. John was introduced to the art by George Bates and has carried on learning by experience as the floral displays became part of his duties as Head Gardener. John’s responsibilities include the private apartments as well as the public spaces and everyday displays as well as special events. The grandness and scale of the house require a bold approach and have determined John’s style. Often he will use only one variety of flower or shrub but blooms and arrangements can be large, even grandiose. Placing is important and compositions need to attract attention. He always hopes that his flowers will be commented on and form part of visitors’ conversation both during and after their visit. This is the same whether it is a massive arrangement for the State Rooms or a bowl of blooms for the bedroom of a visitor to the family. John’s arrangements reflect the seasons and about 75% of the flowers he uses come from the gardens where there is also a choice of greenery that most flower arrangers would envy. There is an area set aside for growing flowers to cut but parts of the gardens are also planted with a view to providing flowers for the house. Recently, beds of David Austin roses have been planted both for show in the garden and for cutting. For major events, public or private, John has to think about preparing at least a week in advance to make sure the flowers are in full bloom when he needs them. This may involve moving them indoors and out several times. He will then spend up to two days actually arranging the flowers. Asked to select his own favourites from his work, John struggled to decide. He likes to see the dining table all set out with silver, china and flowers ready for a big dinner. Royal occasions such as the visit of the Queen in her Jubilee Year stand out in his memory. FLOWER FESTIVAL The annual Flower Festival has provided a new dimension to John’s work. For this event he works alongside local floral arrangement societies and produces an arrangement on a theme for one of the State Rooms. Perhaps to his own surprise, he has proved very adept at this. Last year the theme was ‘Cities of the Grand Tour’ and John’s city was Pisa with its leaning tower. This year the Festival will feature ‘Shakespeare’s Plays’. John has had the chance to choose a play and a room that will complement each other. He says that he has a few ideas already but may well change his mind and won’t finally decide until he sees what is looking good as the date approaches. UFUS Shoon, an awesomely laid back, leather trousered, gaucho dude (he’s actually from Trinidad but what’s a minor detail) who raises alpacas on his farm overlooking a ridge along the River Gwash. He is an unlikely maker on first encounter, but this is just one of many things which onlookers would be surprised to learn about this endlessly surprising man. The manifestation of innumerable, seemingly incongruous qualities he is both an engineer and alpaca breeder, a technology whizz kid and weaver, a huge truck driving environmentalist; a rampant carnivore with a surprisingly soft spot for animals; an asset rich landowner who for the past six years has lived in a makeshift, self constructed caravan home - though plans are afoot for a highly glazed log cabin overlooking his acres. Technically adept and rigorously disciplined, every morning he attends to his business supplying UK manufactured card reading prepayment machines worldwide, from his office in Barnack. Job done he devotes a similar energy to the task of living. Surrounded by his twenty-nine strong alpaca herd, nine of which are currently pregnant; three micro pigs (who proved to be not quite as micro as envisaged and were therefore donated to him by a neighbour), a clutch of cantankerous but loveable roosters who annoyed the neighbours in their previous homes; three sleek ridgebacks, an ageing spaniel and a softly grey coloured cat amongst other animals, he is forging a new facet to his persona as a weaver. A Christmas gift of a loom from his wife Rachel, who spins the wool from their alpacas on her spinning wheel in the wooden living room/studio structure adjoining the caravan, has fuelled Rufus’s interest in woven textiles. Having assembled the structure in record quick time he set about experimenting. Intrigued by the effect of different yarns, colours and natural versus manufactured materials he was he recounts inseparable from the loom for a while. The absorption paid off as he showed friends and acquaintances the results of his labour and the flow of orders started to trickle in; a shawl for a local restaurant owner’s wife, a scarf to complement a tweed cap for a friend, a snood for himself, some headbands for a forthcoming village show together with a medley of South American inspired hats and fingerless gloves. The weaving, it seems, is destined to become a new thread to his already multi-stranded life. In contrast to many professional craft weavers and true to his general practical ethos in life, he is a dab

hand at constructing pretty much anything from a roof over his head, to a novel outdoor pizza oven in a discarded oil barrel, to growing a wide ranging selection of trees and exotics including several avocado plants and a banana palm from seed, raising vegetables and livestock to feed them both; Rufus is a functional weaver. The hats, shawls and baby blankets and bags in the pipeline are all intended to be worn and used. Listening to him talk about the eyes and slots, separators and weights, the warp and the weft and the shuttle and the reed it is clear he has discovered yet another rich thread to the meaning of life for him. Freed from the slavish addiction of television and radio (they gave them up seven years ago when they moved to the farm which is entirely off grid) they have been able to indulge in living life says Rufus. Rufus is no stranger to this however, having grown up wild amongst 250 acres of jungle, aloe and fruit trees in Trinidad.

SPINNING THE WOOL

Rachel cards the wool from the alpacas on a leather pad, making what she describes as a fan of the staples (locks of alpaca wool removed by shearing the alpaca’s coats). The effect is not dissimilar to untangling hair. This process also clears out anything caught in the alpaca wool. The fanned wool is then pinched and twisted as it is fed to the spinning wheel to create continuous long lengths of spun thread. The thread is collected in half bobbins. Once two half bobbins have been filled the two half bobbins are ply-ed together to produce the finished wool ready for knitting. FUN FACTS • Wool is only sheared from the saddle of an alpaca not the neck or legs. • One alpaca yields between 3.5-5 kilos of wool. • The resulting wool is sold by weight. A baby shawl for example would require approximately 500g to complete. • A ratio of five spinners to one knitter is the norm for wool production.

Time to travel to Spain: Cáceres, Spanish Gastronomy Capital 2015 Laura Alcázar, currently living in Stamford, tells us about her old home town’s gastronomic pedigree

F you are passionate about Spanish food you should visit Cáceres this year, Spanish Gastronomy Capital 2015. Located in the west of Spain, in the Extremadura region, Cáceres has enjoyed the title of World Heritage City since 1986 thanks to its Old Town, which is considered the third best conserved in Europe. I have been living in Cáceres for over ten years, working as journalist and as head of communication for different companies, so I know the city well. In this article I would like to recommend to you some of the places that I used to go for dinner or just to have creative ‘tapas’. First of all, going for a walk around the Old Town we can find several cosy ‘taperías’ like Calenda o La Cacharrería, where enjoying an informal lunch or dinner based on our typical ‘tapas’. However if you can afford it you should know Atrio, a two stars Michelin Restaurant and Relaix Chateau Hotel placed in San Mateo Square. Managed by its owners, the brilliant chef Toño Perez and the sommelier José Polo, Atrio has a well known cellar, being one of the most important in Europe with more than 2,000 vineyards represented and 40,000 bottles.

Not far from the Old Town, next to Santiago Square, is El Madruelo, a restaurant that offers a creative and complete menu elaborated with local products in a quiet and relaxed environment and affordable price. After that, it might be a great idea to have a rest enjoying the good weather of Cáceres, having a coffee in one of many terraces of its Plaza Mayor, which has recently been remodelled to become a meeting point for tourists and local Pablo Medrano people. On the other hand, in the modern town I would suggest you go to Oquendo Restaurant, definitely my favourite one, a temple of authentic gastronomy where its chef Pablo Medrano combines and develops the excellent cooking skills from his region, the Vasque Country, with the quality of our products. The result is elegantlypresented, delicious food, in an environment mainly full of local clients. The region also produces a great variety of good sheep and goat cheeses, like the famous Torta del Casar; and the correct place to taste a high quality cheese board is El Potosí, a typical Spanish ‘meson’ where you also can try the best products of the ‘dehesa extremeña’ such as ibérico jam and good grilled meats. You can complete your trip to Cáceres going for a drink after dinner. Nice pubs are waiting for you around the Old Town as La Belle or Petit Gin in Pizarro Street and Mastropiero or El Corral de las Cigueñas, both with a huge and charming patio on which to enjoy the warm summer nights. There are many more places to discover in Cáceres but this is just a small selection of my favorites… I hope you enjoy them in your trip to Spain! STAMFORD LIVING JULY 2015

A Cut Above Their tweed clothing range is worn by Princess Anne and Eric Clapton. Corby based manufacturer Chrysalis Clothes is that rare breed: a successful British manufacturing business. Words and photos: Fiona Cumberpatch

HE factory floor at Chrysalis Clothes is a hive of industry. There’s the hum of sewing machines, the smell of freshly pressed cloth, tweed jackets hanging up in various stages of completion and Radio 2 playing in the background. With 30 workers, Chrysalis is a success story. It was started on St George’s Day 1986 by Managing Director Chris Blackmore with just eight employees, and has been in profit since the first year. “Throughout my working life I’ve seen it all: we’ve had three day weeks and two major recessions,” says Chris, who started his career as a tailor at Austin Reed around 50 years ago and came to Corby in 1973 as factory manager of duffle coat makers Gloverall. “There are only a handful of us left manufacturing clothes in the UK now, but I wanted to stay here rather than move offshore.” In January this year, Chris’s daughter Charlotte joined the business as Marketing Director. After 20 years at Next, she is now helping her father to expand the brand. Chrysalis designs and manufactures tweed outerwear for men and women. There are between 50 and 60 different styles from field coats to top coats. Each one is hand cut and hand made with astonishing attention to detail.

Only the finest soft British tweeds are used for the garments, and this is sourced from mills in Yorkshire and Scotland. Linings, pocket trims, under collar and top collar trims are selected to create stylish, classic long lasting garments. The company is mainly a business to business seller, although a factory shop has recently opened on site, where coats made from shorter lengths of discontinued material are available to the public at reduced prices. “A business client will come to us and choose the style they want us to make, including selecting bespoke linings, trims and all the details. They literally build their own coat, and we then go into production,” explains Charlotte. “We don’t hold stock, everything is made to order.”

Once the client has chosen a coat design, the making process begins. “First, the pattern is made and we do this here at the factory,” explains Chris. Then the jacket pieces are cut out in the prepping area. The tweed is then processed, and a stabilising interfacing is fused on to key pieces, such as pocket tops and

collars. The garment is prepared and delivered to the sewing team in an adjacent room. The distinctive Chrysalis label is sewn on to the lining, and a ‘drip strip’ – to aid the water repellent properties of the jacket – is introduced on the base. Knitted storm cuffs are added and the pockets, sleeves, welts, flaps, front and facings are stitched. “It is a highly skilled job,” says Charlotte. “Many of our workers have been with us for years.” Chris admits that it is not always easy to find people with the right skills. “School curriculums have changed, computer screens have arrived - and it shows,” he says. “We do train people, although we don’t offer apprenticeships. Employees need to be industrious and very precise.” The manufacturing process is all about team work. “Nobody makes a garment each, the operations are individual,” explains Chris. “But you do need to know how to do the job in front and the job behind.” It is fascinating to see how the zips are placed and sewn, shoulders joined and sleeves and side seams closed. As the coats are weather proof, a membrane is inserted between the tweed and the lining, and each garment has a Teflon coating. The lining and the outer garment are put together and sewn out, turned through and top stitched. Each coat takes four hours to complete before it is hung up ready for inspection, then ticketed for size and style.

She and Chris are constantly developing new styles. The Oxford has a slimmer cut, and is belted, aimed at a younger market. Tweeds in brighter colours rather than the traditional muted green are being introduced, and bolder checks are noticeable. At around £600 for a full priced jacket, the garments are designed to be worn for years. “This is why we use the finest materials, with cotton from Italy, Loden fabric from Austria and a fabric called Alcantara, a durable man made suede,” explains Charlotte. Working with her father is a privilege, she explains. “My Dad is my hero: he can cut a pattern, cut and sew, he can literally make anything,” she says. Chris’s wife Annette works in the admin department and helps with packing, and son Tim has modelled his father’s jackets for GQ magazine. The Blackmores are facing the future confidentally. “I’ve never been fearful,” says Chris. “It would be much tougher if we were competing in the mass market. Getting Started in the World of Blogging Blogging is an easy way to share your hobbies or promote your business. William Eichler talks to two Stamford-based bloggers about the advantages of joining this growing online community

LOGGING is the most democratic form of publishing available. Anyone can do it. It does not require any particular expertise and there are many sites available to help you get started. You can publish anything you like: articles, photos, recipes. The list of possibilities is endless. It all depends on what you want to get out of it. I spoke to two Stamford-based bloggers to discover more about this online world. RUTH’S COASTAL WALK (UK) Ruth Livingston, a retired GP, is committed to trekking the entire length of the UK’s coastline. A keen writer and selfproclaimed “techie nerd”, she also wanted to record her experiences and so she started her blog, Ruth’s Coastal Walk (UK). “It was going to be a diary for me,” she says. At first it seemed like no one was reading her blog. But this all changed once she joined Twitter with the memorable username @ regularly. Once or twice a week should prevent your readers from forgetting about you. And if you RuthlessTweets. A great hockey season at StamfordSchool

Hockey at Stamford School has gone from strength to strength this year, as Nicholas RuddJones, noisy touchline parent, can testify

T has been an eventful season and many congratulations are in order for all of the squads. The school has worked to develop a strong inclusive ethos with players of all abilities training together to produce a competitive work ethic. The coaching staff are dedicated to providing an environment in which they can help students overcome limitations, instil discipline, appreciate the value of teamwork and understand commitment. The coaching team’s main aim is to combine strategic, conceptual and technical development techniques that engender enthusiasm and enjoyment; to help motivate all players individually and as a team, towards achieving success. Looking back on the year, Head of Hockey, Jack Cropper, said: “I have been extremely proud to be a part of a dedicated in-house staff team who work so hard throughout the season to deliver the coaching plan and manage the teams. I am sure that I speak on behalf of pupils and parents alike in expressing our sincere thanks to the staff who have been prepared to generously offer their time and expertise after school and at weekends.” In the department’s quest for excellence they have enjoyed specialist coaching from Ed Horler, ex Millfield Captain, who regularly commuted from the GB U21 Hockey Hub at Loughborough to share his knowledge and experience with the junior sides. Ben Mackey and Sam Hatherley, of Team Bath and GB U21 also provided the department with the latest coaching techniques and demonstrated some mesmerising skills for the boys to emulate. The introduction of indoor hockey has proved to be a huge hit with players of all ages and initiated a number of new players to the game and within the hockey family. The indoor regional finals, to be held in the autumn term, will be an eagerly awaited fixture for the U18 & U16 teams with keen aspirations for success. Over 200 boys have played for the school this season on a very strong circuit each week, with two teams representing the school nationally; the boy’s first team and the boys under 13s. U18S PROGRESSION TO NATIONAL FINALS The road to Lee Valley was tense for the first team, with results against Uppingham and Oundle decided on penalty stokes and all other games won by the narrowest one goal margin. The game against Denstone College deserves special mention: the team was 2-1 down at half time, but they worked hard to bring it back and scoring their last goal with only eight seconds to spare they ended as winners 4-3, putting the best of hockey of the year on display. The finals weekend saw the boys against Reeds School.

Unfortunately, this was a step too far, and the team went out 4-1 to the eventual winners. The following day the boys were involved in a tight scrappy game against Magdalen College, Oxford, for Bronze. The boys, mentally and physically fatigued, drew the game 2-2 but lost on strokes. A fourth place finish in the National Plate Finals for the 1sts. U13S MADE IT TO THE NATIONAL FINALS TOO The boys under 13s had some year, winning the Gresham’s Invitational tournament and Princethorpe Invitational, in addition to becoming Lincolnshire County Champions and comfortably winning the east regional to be crowned the East Champions. The nationals proved a little more difficult however. Playing the best of the best the boys started with a 2-2 draw with local rivals Oakham, and wins versus eventual winners Dean Close and Harrogate Grammar. The team was sitting pretty top of the group but a win against St George’s Weybridge would gift them a spot in the final. However, it was not to be, going down 2-1. The boys were put into a 3rd and 4th place playoff with Millfield, where missed chances early on led to a 3-1 win to Millfield. Like the 1sts, the boys finished 4th in the national tournament. Jack Cropper commends their efforts, stating: “Each and every member of both teams can be proud of their achievements and should look forward to building on their success next season. On behalf of the school I would like to express our pride not only on their success but in the way in which they have gone about achieving it.” David Laventure, Director of Sport at Stamford School, said: “It’s been a fantastic year for hockey right from the under 12Gs to the First XI. The boys worked tremendously hard in pre-season training before Christmas and an unbeaten tour of Holland for the 12s, 13s and seniors just kept the momentum building. The AstroTurf was rarely empty after school during the week and on Saturdays throughout the term. The staff all worked very hard but will have to work even harder next year with more teams, more matches and more success on the agenda!” STAMFORD LIVING JULY 2015

N the words of Curtis Mayfield, “... move on up towards your destination, Though you might find, from time to time, complications. “ This song gives me shivers of pleasure because, alongside Hard-fi’s ‘Hard to Beat’ it has been the musical constant of our family life. The latter has been guaranteed to stop arguments on long car journeys, for ten years. Its youthful energy is infectious and we get swept up in it every time. The car suspension is sorely tested when three adults and a slightly smaller one flail about in tuneful joy. ‘Move On Up’ is a similarly life-affirming track on our favourite coming-of-age movie, ‘Bend it Like Beckham.’ We have devoured it countless times, savouring every morsel. No other movie brings us onto the same sofa so willingly, and Mayfield’s lyrics are perfect for every stage of life. We need his words of wisdom more than ever at the moment. Child No1 left for Uni in 2014, a second is about to go and a third is left behind, bereft. What once was a busy house is emptying and whilst the youngest stays put, everyone else has begun to ‘Move on Up’. Things will never be the same. The best choice I ever made was to bring up my children in Stamford. Not for them the crumbling factories of my home town, the after dark violence, the fear of strangers, the biting, horizontal wind and sleet. This has been a warm and welcoming town, a small town, a town where people know the name of your dog and there is a comfort and a safety in that. Our young people know that wandering alone into town on any given day or evening will provide them with the companionship of those

No.3 The Yard Katy Burrows finds the perfect place to while away time and savour the experience

N idyllic little courtyard, tucked away off Ironmonger Street, is home to one of Stamford’s hidden gems - No.3 The Yard. It was a warm evening in June when we visited, and they were hosting a special Kadai Fire Bowl Barbeque. The smoky aroma was so good you could almost taste it, and at the helm of the fire bowl was the highly acclaimed Head Chef, Tim Luff, who co-owns the restaurant alongside Simon McEnery. My friend Zoe accompanied me for the evening, and we dined alfresco in the intimate surroundings of the sheltered courtyard garden. There was a relaxed buzz of conversation in the air and, surrounded by lavender and flickering candlelight, it felt as if we were on holiday in the south of France. It was the perfect night for a jug of Pimms, although there is also an excellent wine list and it’s always worth asking about the current vintages. Moving on to the food, the menu was nicely varied, with a mix of lighter and more substantial options - as is the norm at No.3 The Yard. Zoe was quick to choose her main course - spatchcocked chicken marinated in lemon, rosemary and yogurt, served with quinoa and roasted new potatoes. As always, I took longer to decide and was tempted by the bourbon baby back ribs and the chilli and ginger marinated beef kebabs, before I eventually settled on the ultimate beef burger with Lincolnshire poacher cheese and chips. In keeping with the Mediterranean feel to the evening, we shared antipasti to start, which

came with artisan cheese, ibérico ham, olives and sunblush tomatoes. The starter and mains were all delicious - the spatchcooked chicken was succulent and tender with a fresh summery taste, and the burger came with triple-cooked chips that were to die for. For dessert, Zoe ordered pear and frangipane tart, with clotted cream, while I went for the butterscotch and banana Eton mess, and we finished off the night with one of the best tasting lattes I’ve ever had. We whiled away the evening and before we knew it, the hours had passed us by. We weren’t alone either – the airy conservatory and intimate upstairs dining areas were still filled with people enjoying themselves long after they’d finished their meals. Great Food Club Awards 2 The public voting has closed. Here are the local food independents that Great Food Club members voted for…

FTER counting the 1,750 public votes cast between March and May, I can now announce the shortlist for the Great Food Club Awards 2015! The awards are for local independents based in the Midlands only (no national or global chains are eligible) and the shortlist comprises the top three vote winners in each category for each region. There are some well known names on there, and a few surprises too, but all have one thing in common: they are passionate about food/drink and customer service, which is why people have voted for them. In the Stamford and Rutland area, shortlisted businesses include The Mad Turk, Stamford Deli, The Olive Branch, Hambleton Bakery, Kings Cliffe Brewery and Grasmere Farm Shop. As you read this, the final judging process by the Great Food Club writing team is taking place to decide the 2015 champions. Music maestro Nigel Stark is Director of Music at St Martin’s and St Mary’s in Stamford and conductor of the Grantham Choral Society and Royal Leamington Spa Bach Choir. An Associate of the Royal College of Organists and holder of a Diploma in Choral Directing, Nigel has played and conducted in major churches and cathedrals worldwide. He now lives in Oakham. Alysia Anderson met him for a chat about pipes and polyphony WHAT GOT YOU INTERESTED IN THE ORGAN IN THE FIRST PLACE? My father was a semi-professional tenor and encouraged me musically. I can probably sing all the tenor arias from Handel’s Messiah as I heard them so often! I discovered the organ by accident really. I used to visit my grandparents in Northumberland and go to church with my grandma. I loved hearing the organ and once my grandmother said to me “Why don’t you ask the vicar if you can have a go?” I did – I was about 13 – and was instantly hooked! I then got another opportunity to play through a friend of my father’s. It was two bus rides away to get there. I also used to practise in a little church on my way home from school. Later I had lessons in Chester Cathedral and became a professional organist. It’s very physical: you use your hands, feet, everything really, so it’s an allenveloping experience. The organ has a rather churchy image as a hymn machine but in fact it can hold its own and has a marvellous repertoire. There are modern composers around such as Judith Weir and Petr Eben adding to this body of work. WHAT DO YOU LIKE ABOUT CONDUCTING CHOIRS? I’ve discovered that I really enjoy it and am good at it. It’s rewarding as you get results by getting the best out of people. When I worked in Portsmouth it was in a rather deprived area but several youngsters went on to became organ or choral scholars, so it’s nice to feel that I had a positive influence on their lives. In Portsea, the church was amazing but in a poor area, yet people in their twenties would come to hear plainsong and polyphony (harmonising voices). WHAT DOES THE ROLE OF DIRECTOR OF MUSIC FOR ST MARTIN’S AND ST MARY’S INVOLVE? I play the organ for services in both churches and I direct the choir. We hold regular concerts to raise money for the churches’ upkeep. We are always looking for more singers so if anyone is interested, come along to our Friday evening rehearsals at 7.15 in St Mary’s or contact me at chromatic@hotmail.co.uk. I enjoy performing in Stamford as people are very appreciative of the music. DO YOU HAVE A FAVOURITE COMPOSER? I would have to say Bach, especially as an organist. You never finish with his

work. It has hidden layers and reveals something new each time. Church music has to have that extra dimension, I think. I GATHER YOU ALSO PLAY THE TROMBONE WITH THE RUTLAND BIG BAND? I chose the trombone at school as I liked the versatility of brass instruments: you can play in an orchestra, brass, jazz or big band. When I worked in Solihull it was very full on with four different choirs, recruitment and pastoral duties so I wanted to do something where I didn’t have to be in charge. I discovered the Rutland Big Band when I moved to Oakham and really enjoy playing with them. We perform at private functions and also hold theme nights such as James Bond or the Great Gatsby, often with singers and dancers too. ARE THERE ANY MUSICAL EVENTS TAKING PLACE THIS YEAR? For Rutland Big Band gigs visit www.rutlandbigband.org.uk TELL ME ABOUT YOUR CURRENT PROJECT, HAUPTWERK SYSTEMS UK Unlike conventional electronic organs, Hauptwerk (www.hwsystemsuk.co.uk) is a computerised ‘virtual organ’ which you link to a console and sound system. It holds recordings of notes played on around 100 organs around the world, with their original acoustics, so it’s as if you are playing in Salisbury Cathedral or on an historic chamber organ. I am the UK agent for Magnus Organ Builders in Poland, who build solid oak consoles. The instruments look beautiful and cost less than an equivalent electronic substitute, but with far superior sound realism. I’m installing one at the moment in a church in Scotland and have set one up in St Joseph’s church in Oakham. Where a small pipe organ, say with 12 stops, would cost £250, 000 to £300,000, you can get a 60-stop console for around £45,000. They may not last as long as pipe organs but you get the benefit of all those different sounds. Also, as computer technology continues to improve, they will become even better and cheaper over time. The sound is truly amazing, just like a real organ.
