Your profile pic

When is the right time to change your profile pic? How often should you change your profile pic? It’s one of life’s trickiest decisions now that social media is such a central part of our lives. You always want to look at your best, most smiley and youngest-looking possible – on the other hand, if you leave it too long, when you do change your pic those who follow you think ‘wow, he/she has REALLY aged – whereas in fact they had been looking at how you looked many years ago. I changed my profile pic last month after probably five years – and got lots of comments! I think I will make a note to change it every year now. Or maybe the easier solution is just to show your pet or your favourite view! Anyway, my new pic here is ALMOST contemporary, so that’s how I really look!

hen you look in the mirror, what do you see? Do you find yourself lifting your chin for photos? Do you wear a scarf to hide your neck, and clothes which cover your neck, thighs or stomach even during the warmer months? Advances in non-invasive technology mean your face and body can be treated more easily than ever. Our treatments target problem areas for men and women. LIPOFIRM PRO –offers advanced non-surgical solutions to treat face and body. Focused fat reduction, skin tightening and firming, body contouring. Proven by science, tested and confirmed by clinical experts: you can be sure you’re in safe hands. The treatment is safe for patients of all ages who are showing signs of ageing or wanting to improve problem areas where diet and exercise have failed. This is the option for those who want aesthetic improvement without the cost, risk and down-time of surgery. “We generally recommend eight treatments at weekly intervals. Patients notice results quickly which will improve over the course and beyond,” says Lisa. BTL X-WAVE – Acoustic wave therapy is an advanced, FDA approved, scientifically proven cellulite treatment. It uses specially modified acoustic wave pulses which induce vibration within the connective tissue and break down those adhesive fibrous bands in the skin which lead to puckering and dimpling. Cellulite happens regardless of weight, diet or exercise. When fibrous bands from the top layer of the skin attach to fat, dimples then show on the surface of the skin.”With X-WAVEyou can expect reduction in cellulite, no risk or down-time with an excellent satisfaction rate,” says Lisa.

VENUS VIVA – uses Nano-Fractional Radio Frequency and micro-needling to deliver energy through the epidermis to the dermis. This generates heat and stimulates fibroblast and collagen remodelling. Results are firmer, tighter skin, lifted jowls and eyebrows, reduction in lines and wrinkles plus an improvement in overall skin health, texture, redness and pigment irregularities. There’s minimal down-time for such a results-driven treatment. AFTER

HERE are not many issues of Stamford Living that have not featured Energy’s cool bohemian clothes, and their fantastic range of jeans for both men and women. This one-stop shop is the cornerstone of many a local customer’s wardrobe young and old, male and female. Returning customers and now friends who have moved away still come back with carrier bags to prove it. After studying for her ‘A’ Levels, Sarah started as a trainee Buyer at British Shoe but a wander past an empty shop in Stamford Walk caught her eye. She called the number in the window and managed to talk her way into renting the premises (Now George’s Sandwich Bar) rent-free for a few weeks. She had a vision to sell the casual clothes she loved and grabbed it. Twenty years ago you could set up shop with clothes on a sale or return basis and companies were happy to oblige. With some makeshift shop fittings from the local scrap yard she set about selling ‘surf style’ to us locals and never looked back. There was nothing like it at the time and still isn’t. Another shop followed giving more space and the ability to acquire more brands as the customer base grew. Fifteen years on in Ironmonger Street Sarah asked Claire (a customer) if she would like a job. Now Claire and Sarah are the winning combination of pure ‘Energy’ enthusiasm and a zest for life and living that cannot be matched! People come in for a chat, not necessarily to buy, it’s a sociable hub and never dull. When advice is needed the girls are there to help. Their jeans fitting ability for all shapes and sizes has to be experienced. We have had a lot of fun outfitting various groups we have featured in the magazine and the same comment rings in my ear “It was the first pair I tried on!” Between us chefs, choirs, and more recently band members are astounded that they can find the perfect fit. Brands are very important to Sarah. She buys with her customers in mind and told me she was one of the first shops in the UK to sell Maison Scotch. “It was a jaw dropping moment!” Now this phenomenal Dutch brand caters for men and women and works well with the sportier brands such as Adidas, Carhartt, Pepe and Levis to name but a few. This savvy pair has moved the business on to new level thanks to the Internet. What they have achieved is more than admirable. They have over 3K followers on social media and a vibrant Instagram account, whereby other (International) brands such as Becksonndergaard scarves (14.5K followers) re-gram their images and the unique look they have created. Employing Alex to do their photography has ensured a constant drip feed of tantalising images of the Energy girls wearing clothes and accessories to covet. “It’s all about having fun!” Sarah smiles. “We love what we do and want to share it. We love living in Stamford and want to celebrate it.” Now their infamous ‘A’ board gives us all happy quotes to try to live by – you can’t help but come away thinking... I wish I could bottle it, their Energy is infectious! Energy – 9 Ironmonger St. Tel. 01780 765633 Look out for a new re-fit in May to celebrate 20 years in business. www.energy-clothing.com wearetheenergygirls ( Instagram account ) Thank you to Alex Wallace for the Energy Girls images. HEALTH & BEAUTY

The definitive guide to young skin

Genevieve Potter looks at how to face the world with confidence during your teens and early twenties

A

CNE is a topic that has hit the headlines recently, with charities and action groups acknowledging just how adversely it can affect an individual’s confidence. I can empathize; in my teens and twenties I remember being so embarrassed about break-outs that I’d pile on every industrial strength lotion I could buy; leaving my skin sore and angry. For me, the watchwords for young skin are ‘nourish’, ‘simple’ and ‘gentle’. Whilst it’s a myth that cutting out all fat from the diet will ‘dry out’ acne, you absolutely have to start from the inside when it comes to good skin – cutting out too much refined sugar and fizzy drinks and upping your intake of water, greens and low-sugar fruits like berries and cherries. (Making a daily smoothie with a Nutribullet or kitchen blender – including a little fruit and lots of greens, is a brilliant way to start). There are also some supplements you can take in tablet form that are very helpful, notably Accumax from the Advanced Nutrition Programme (available in Stamford from The Electrolysis and Skincare Studio or the Advanced Skin Clinic). Then be kind to your face; a very gentle facial a few weeks before a big event can get you on the right track, and afterwards keep your skin care regime simple – and don’t forget your day time sun protection of 30 SPF or more, in a non-clogging formula. For girls, on a bad skin day it’s all-too tempting to pile make up on, but be brave; it’s more flattering and better SKIN LESSONS FROM ASEMBO At Asembo, the team believe that a simple ‘cleanse, tone and moisturise’ regime can set you up with good skin for life. Daily Cleansing with ESPA Balancing Foam Cleanser morning and night removes debris and cleanses pores, this is especially important as hormonal changes increase sebum production. ESPA Balancing Herbal Spafresh after cleansing will tone and balance the skin, leaving it looking clearer and brighter. Oily and combination skin needs a good moisturiser, like the ESPA 24 Hour Balancing Moisturiser, which balances oily areas around the t-zone, leaving skin beautifully soft and hydrated, also helping to reduce acne scarring.

for your skin to let it breathe, employing some sheer mineral make up and a little concealer (the Jane Iredale range is brilliant). Help is at hand with lots of good beauty salons in Stamford offering bespoke treatments and advice for young skin – here are a few of the best. STAMFORD BEAUTY MINI FACIALS Sarah and her team have worked alongside the International Dermal Institute, where there’s a strong emphasis on young skin education. All of the Stamford Beauty therapists are trained in caring for young skin and work with a product called ‘Clear Start’ by Dermalogica. It incorporates salicylic acid - a natural exfoliant that breaks down dead skin cells.. The salon offer ‘Mini Skin’ treatments, a 30 minute treatment suitable for both boys and girls for just £13.00 (this treatment can be offered for the face or back) and skin care lessons, which take 30 minutes and show you how to use the product range, for £10. This can be offered individually, with a friend or in groups. OFFER: During the Month of June, if you have a Mini Skin treatment, you’ll receive a free gift to try at home. THE SOLUTION TO UNWANTED FACIAL HAIR For young women in their teens and twenties this is very much a problem of today and it is rapidly increasing. This is due to a condition known as Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS) resulting in a hormonal imbalance, producing male pattern hair growth, acne and weight gain. Tweezing, waxing, threading and shaving exacerbate this problem, causing stronger hair growth and damage to the skin. There is a solution to permanently treat these coarse terminal hairs and that is electrolysis - the only method that can legally claim to be permanent. Electrolysis successfully treats all skin types and all hair types. Carolyn Claypole is one of the UK’s leading experts on electrolysis and is based in The George Hotel Mews. Carolyn is happy to provide a friendly and free consultation. • Electrolysis & Skincare Studio, The George Mews, Stamford, PE9 2LB. Tel: 01780 763620 Email: info@escstudio.co.uk

GREAT BROWS FOR TEENS AND PRE-TEENS Well-defined brows are important at any age and, rather than letting loose with a pair of tweezers, it really is worth getting them shaped professionally. As a youngster Natalie, proprietor of Natalie Dams Beauty, had ‘wild hairy’ brows, that she over-plucked – it then took two years for them to grow back, creating small gaps that will never completely re-grow. With this in mind, when the brow team at Natalie Dams re-shape teenagers’ eyebrows – both boys and girls – they ensure that they don’t create anything too defined; often just taking the middle ‘mono-brow’ away, or tidying the underneath of the brow, but always ensuring that the finished shape is bespoke to each individual. Natalie acknowledges that parents can feel nervous about sending or bringing their children in to a salon from a young age, but the team ensures that everyone feels welcome and comfortable. Under 16s cost £5, and for 16 and over, £10. • Natalie Dams Beauty at Oliver Lee, 11 St John’s Street, Stamford PE9 2DB. New body treatments at Elysia,Tansor Situated in the picturesque village of Tansor, Elysia are at the cutting edge of new body treatments, designed to effectively reduce cellulite, scarring and stretch marks. ‘BTL X-Wave’ uses acoustic waves – strong, non-focused sound pulses that induce vibration. These have been used for over 30 years in medical treatments and have been modified and tested to improve cellulite, scarring and stretch marks. The waves break down adhesive fibrous bands in the skin which cause puckering and dimpling, improving blood and lymph circulation, skin texture and elasticity. Each treatment takes just 30 minutes, with no down time, and for optimal results, a course of six at weekly intervals is recommended. Lisa also offers BTL ‘Lymphastim’. This treatment focuses on the precise movement of lymphatic fluids, offering mechanical drainage to detoxify the body. It gently remodels areas of concern and can be especially useful in preventing ‘heavy leg’ syndrome and fluid retention (it’s used by top sportspeople as a recovery aid). Lymphastim can be used alone or in conjunction with X-Wave, and again takes just 30 minutes without down time. • Please get in touch with Lisa for more information and to book a treatment: Elysia Health and Beauty 1 Tansor Court Cottages, Fotheringhay Rd, Peterborough PE8 5HP. Venue: Sir Henry Royce Suite, The Marriott Hotel, Peterborough Business Park, Lynch Wood, Peterborough, PE2 6GB. • Visitors can book their free ticket or find out more by contacting Sarah Evans: sarah.evans@hearclearexpo.co.uk Tel: 0800 298 7265 or by visiting: www.hearclearexpo.co.uk

surgery and with significantly less recovery time. Whilst a conventional facelift procedure is carried out under general anaesthesia, skin and fat are tightened, lifted and repositioned. The Silhouette Lift is different and works in two separate ways. “The procedure is carried out under local anaesthetic”, explains Dr Elder, “we carefully thread dissolvable sutures under the skin in certain key points. The unique sutures have a number of cones spaced in opposite directions which allow the suture to cog with skin and secure a degree of lift, tightening and repositioning of the lax tissue.” In addition to the conventional lifting and tightening effects the Silhouette Soft lift also has a regenerative action. The threads and cones are made form a substance call poly-Llactic acid which is gradually absorbed by the body but also stimulates fibroblasts to produce new springy collagen, resulting in a continued progressive improvement over time. “The treatment takes about an hour. Ideally a couple of days off work are recommended if possible but by no means essential, and the

benefits are likely to last in the region of 20 months and can easily be repeated or combined with other treatments such as dermal fillers,” says Dr Elder. “The cost of the treatment is typically around £1560 for a four thread treatment”. Whilst results are not as dramatic as a surgical facelift they are impressive; the “down time” is minimal, there are no risks of general anaesthesia and no incisions to heal; just tiny entrance and exit points concealed within the hairline. Flabbiness in the mid-face and jaw line plus skin laxity of the neck are effectively tightened and there is continued improvement over time. The significantly lower cost and less invasive nature will appeal to those too nervous to go under the surgeon’s knife; meaning Silhouette Soft may be an increasingly preferred option for those seeking to restore their youthful facial contours. • Glen-Eden Medical, The Market Cross Surgery, Corby Glen Tel: 01476 550056 DrJohnElder@GlenEdenmedical.co.uk www.Glen-Edenmedical.co.uk

STAMFORD SHOUT OUT... Random acts of kindness or excellent customer service should not go unnoticed, so here is your chance to give a ‘shout out’ to someone who has gone above and beyond the call of duty. Antonia Scott discovers there really are some genuinely good people in Stamford...

T

owards Careby, the hedgerows are alive with white blackthorn blossom. Those sweet scores of muntjac deer also lie in wait: I know they’re ready to pounce at any time with their lovely faces but meddlesome minds, so I take it easy and sometimes (always) stop to look at the stream below the bridge. Trains are ever present and soon the herald for Little Bytham is the gloriously majestic brick arch of the Viaduct, which leads me in one piece to The Stamford Auction Rooms. You may not have heard of it yet, but you will: The news is travelling. By virtue of the press and my love of antiques, I was alerted to the allure of a female Auctioneer, Jessica Wall. An impressive woman, both proprietress and experienced Valuer of the Stamford Auction Rooms, she is also a Solicitor. Now, my desire is to search for the impeccable aesthetic; for beauty in people, places, and objects and so Jessica gave me the perfect opportunity to create the saleroom catalogue. There can be jewels and solid gold, dolls with two faces, gilt mirrors and creaking Georgian coffers. I have seen Victorian birds with life in a dome and a boar that lives upon the wall. There will be mirrors and always clocks – even a skeleton or two. Railways, Meissen, medals and photographs of souls now gone. I expect our strength is in the solidarity of the predominantly female team of experts and wonderful characters who rally around to bring the Auction day to life. It is truly a marvellous experience. Why not make it a lovely day out? We look forward to seeing you! • Valuations take place Monday to Friday and Collections are free. Forthcoming Sale Dates are: 25th June, 30th July. S I turned up unannounced to Tecmotive on Ryhall Road with a car bonnet that wouldn’t shut, asking if anyone could help me, the garage owner stopped working on the car he was servicing, to diagnose and attempt to fix my problem instead. He said the spring mechanism had broken and it would take approx 20 mins to fix, so I wandered off for a coffee and returned to a problem solved and a car with a safe bonnet to drive home in. To my complete surprise, he didn’t charge me anything, not for the parts nor for his time; and this random act of kindness made me think that a ‘Shout Out’ page would make a great regular feature. Savill’s new Stamford office

Nicholas Rudd-Jones went to visit the team at Savills estate agents

S

AVILLS once again has a base in Stamford, as a result of their recent merger with Smiths Gore; and they have a very smart and welcoming office just opposite the George Hotel in St Martin’s. James Abbott, a very experienced estate agent, is heading up the office. He has strong experience in the region, having been based for some time in Market Harborough. Alongside him on the residential side is Lois Simpson, born and bred Lincolnshire and with over nine years residential property experience; and Heather Lemmon, the office manager. Zoe Noyes is head of Residential Development Sales, and always has a fascinating portfolio of new properties, both those ready for immediate occupancy and those available in the near future, including the Kettering Rd development “Being part of the Savills network provides many benefits,” James told me. “First of all our nationwide network of offices; both regionally in Nottingham, Cambridge and Lincoln; and in London, where we have 37 sales offices. The London market is a key source of potential purchasers, ensuring your property is

effectively marketed to the widest audience.” “Secondly, being part of the Savills network also has the benefit of close links with other specialisms; so if, for example, you have a property with an adjoining slip of land that might have development opportunity, we have professionals who can advise you on that too. “Selecting which estate agent to use is a big decision – and so it should be. While cost is a consideration, other factors such as track record, advertising spread, reputation, personal recommendation, market knowledge, geographical coverage and experience are more important. In the property market it’s about both what you know and who you know. “Whilst our marketing reach is vital, we also believe old fashioned estate agency values are equally important; taking an interest, really finding out what buyers want and when they want it, and keeping in regular contact with them. It is about helping people in almost every aspect of their move; schooling, recommending local tradesmen and removal companies, dog walkers or tree surgeons – we are asked anything and everything.” Savills market properties, both new and period, across the price range from £300,000.

New Heritage housing for Stamford Work has begun on site to create 48 new homes in Stamford that reflect the iconic architecture of the Georgian town. The 48 houses are to be built at the former Stamford Association Football Club ground on Kettering Road after the land was sold to developer Morris Homes by the Burghley House Preservation Trust (BHPT). “The project is the result of rigorous planning and research to produce a legacy scheme sympathetic to its surroundings,” said David Merrick of Savills who marketed the land on behalf of Burghley and who, together with Adam Architecture, advised the trust during the lengthy design process. “Morris Homes, the trust and their respective advisers have worked together, looking at the big picture and the fine detail to ensure the end product is right for this prominent location in Stamford. For example, there will be significant use of ashlar, rubble stone and render,” he said. They are expected to go on sale later in the year and Savills will be the agents for them. • Savills, 9 High St St Martin’s, Stamford, PE9 2LF Tel: 01780 484696 www.savills.co.uk STAMFORD LIVING JUNE 2016

PROFILE Clare Kelly meets the husband and wife printmakers behind Basil & Ford, who create original work from their Stamford studio

MEET THE MAKER

S

OME couples can work well together. Others cannot. Thankfully the former is true of printmakers Lucy and Matt of Basil & Ford. Either that or they’re putting on a pretty good show when I go to visit them. One pours the tea apologising for the lack of ‘real’ sugar, the other offers chocolate eggs pilfered from their daughter Matilda’s leftover Easter stash. I doubt she’ll miss it. Matt shows off his enviable succulent collection in the window where he does his designing, and the two of them have so much energy, I almost need a lie down. And I would do, I don’t think they’d mind. They’re relaxed like that. But I’m eager to see the studio, to see where they work and how. Once inside, I spot all the vintage maps – seemingly of every town and country you could think of. They are the sort of maps that speak of great adventures, of days when travel wasn’t just functional, it was fun. The smiling faces on the covers of these maps have hampers full of picnics, people wear proper driving gloves and not one child seems to scream ‘are we nearly there yet?’. Colourful inks are neatly lined up on shelves and the pinboard showcases some of their favourite pieces of work and a cute snap of them. I also spot a few little notes they’ve written to each other Sellotaped to the exposure unit (where the screens are prepared for printing).

24

On the day I visit, they are creating a bespoke print for a couple – it’s one of their signature pieces – three vintage maps have been carefully cut out by Lucy. They show places where the couple met, where one of them proposed and where they said ‘I do.’ If you’re looking for a truly personalised gift to celebrate a wedding, you’ll find it here. And while all good fairytales might end with a wedding, the story of Basil & Ford began with a wedding. Once engaged, the couple started to look for the perfect invitations but they couldn’t find what they wanted and decided to have a go at printing their own. And so they did. This got them thinking (I imagine at this point, there was a little head scratching going on) and the seed of Basil & Ford was planted. They started making wedding stationery to order – invitations, table plans, order of service booklets. Each one unique and perfectly personal. And then people started shouting for more so they printed cushions, tea towels, table plans. If they could print on it, they would. But they were running out of space in their London flat, there wasn’t enough room to print or store materials. It was time to return to Lucy’s hometown. In 2013, they came to Stamford bringing their business with them. They moved in with Lucy’s

parents and began printing in a charming outbuilding. I mean, I say it’s charming but they said it’s pretty cold. Daughter and future printer Matilda was born and then along came Irish Terriers Rosie and Rusty – and so it grows. And they are planning their dream house and studio which, by the looks of the plans they’ve been working on is going to be pretty spectacular with an abundance of natural light. They love the Lincolnshire way of life and they’re clearly settled in here but they are not to keen to retire into a more genteel existence yet but instead, they hope to open up part of what will be their new studio to other creatives in the area. London might be further away now but Matt often heads back to the Big Smoke to sell their wares at specialist markets and their online shop at www.notonthehighstreet.com is always open; but before you dash off to place your orders, you might have been wondering about their name because it really is very clever. We already know Lucy is from Stamford, that’s the ‘Ford’ part taken care of. Matt was born in Basildon. Can you see what they did there? That’s what I like about them. They’re originals. Just like their work. • For more information and to commission Basil & Ford, visit: www.basilandford.com

ACTIVITIES

Child Friendly Stamford Antonia Scott discovers there are so much more to Sacrewell than just spring lambs! SACREWELL FARM

Sacrewell is a much loved heritage farm attraction and 18th century watermill, conveniently nestled between Peterborough and Stamford. It forms part of the William Scott Abbott Trust, which was founded in 1964 to provide an agricultural education centre, and over the years has evolved from being not just a lovely place for children to see animals and let off steam in the refurbished Playbarn, but with the help of £1.4 million from the Heritage Lottery Fund, the grade II* listed watermill has been restored. By partnering with breeders and owners, Sacrewell supports British Farmers and is home to world famous Shire horses that starred in War Horse, as well as rare breed British Lop pigs and Lincoln Longwool sheep. Sacrewell also hosts regular seasonal events from the popular ‘Lamb National’ to ploughing with vintage tractors. Families regularly enjoy the wildlife trails or one of the rambles available, where children can find pond life in the mill pond, spot the rare red kites and brown hares or understand what’s involved in keeping a pet in the Animal Village and Discovery Centre. Visitors can also take a tractor ride around the land farmed by Riverford Organic Farms and learn the provenance of organic vegetables. SUMMER NIGHTS AT SACREWELL FARM From June to August, Sacrewell Farm is going to be packed full of family fun events so that visitors can have the opportunity to spend even more time relaxing on the farm, with two open-air theatre performances and a new ‘Late Night Fridays’ each week throughout July and August. The farm has electric and nonelectric hook-up camping pitches available for overnight guests. On 18th June Sacrewell is hosting ‘Sherlock Holmes and the Hound of the Baskervilles’ by Chapterhouse Theatre Company. Tickets are £14 for an adult, £10 for a child or £42 for a family of four.

SACREWELL GOES GREEN

On 30th July ‘The Wizard of Oz’ is being staged by Immersion Theatre Company. Tickets are £8 an adult, £6 a child and £25 for a family of four. Under twos visit free. • To book tickets visit www.seetickets.com or call 0871 220 0260. Gates open at 5.30pm. Bring a seat and a picnic. Refreshments will be available. Sacrewell is just off the A1/A47 at Wansford, Peterborough and is open from 9.30am to 5pm every day. For all other enquiries call 01780 782254 or visit www.sacrewell.org.uk

Green has always been a colour associated with Sacrewell, so the team thought it was time the business started to live up to its reputation. Over the last few months, staff and volunteers have made some important changes behind the scenes, to ensure they are doing all they can to help reduce their carbon footprint and to preserve the planet. It all boosts the key messages that Sacrewell is promoting by creating electricity through its hydroelectric waterwheel. “The mill project really made us think about ways we’re using energy,” explains General Manager Debbie Queen. “Sacrewell was always ahead of the game when it came to innovative farming under the careful watch of William Scott Abbott, so we thought it was time we brought forward his legacy.” At the beginning of April, Sacrewell entered into a new waste disposal contract with Peterborough-based firm Viridor, which promises to reuse or recycle 99% of the rubbish it collects. The items that can’t be recycled

26

they make into a resource, creating high-quality compost from food waste and electricity from rubbish that would normally go to landfill. Sacrewell is working hard to ensure the new approach is something their visitors can join in with too. Volunteer John Oliver is building new double bins, with space for recycling and for general waste. Sacrewell have also changed to using recycled paper and everyday items such as wristbands for campers are now 100% recyclable. The final big move by the visitor centre has been in the gift shop. Sacrewell is now working with VegWare to supply compostable bags and Origin8 at Sacrewell Café have also stocked their compostable cutlery, plates and cups. Even the animals are doing their bit! Their new food pots are also compostable, meaning that they can be reused to grow the nutritious grass nuts they are filled with.

TOTS TO TRAVEL... THE STORY SO FAR Antonia Scott speaks to founders of Tots to Travel - Wendy and Rob Shand on the success of their business having recently celebrated their 10 year anniversary.

Congratulations on reaching your 10 Year milestone. Can you tell me how it all started? It all began when my two-year-old son fell into an unenclosed swimming pool whilst on a family holiday in France. I began to wonder why it was so difficult to find a holiday that properly solved the stresses of travelling with under fives, knowing full well that as a mother, I desperately needed a holiday. So I researched the idea and crafted a proposition that properly solves the problems that families in this stage of life face. We began the business in 2006, as Tots to France, with just £250 and nine properties on our portfolio, and now we have over 500 genuinely, family friendly villas, gîtes and resorts across Europe. What does Tots stand for? The biggest thing for us is making it possible for mums and dads to get further than Tesco! We provide holidays that are safe and specially focused on families with young children, so that they can get on with the important business of enjoying their precious family time together. How do you do that? We personally hand select, inspect and perfect every single property to make sure that it is up to our safety standards, is stylish and lots of fun! We are also the only company in the market that guarantees pool barriers - an issue that is clearly close to my heart. We know just how difficult it can be to pack everything you need for a holiday with little ones, so we created a Baby and Toddler Essential

Kit Guarantee to not just provide the obvious items like highchairs and cots but also the essential stair gates, toys, blackout blinds and baby monitors that families need. What are some of your highlights from the last 10 years? I’m very proud of the fact that we receive so much amazing feedback from families who are thrilled (and slightly surprised) that they have actually been able to have a relaxing holiday! What’s more, we have the most amazing connection with mums on Facebook which tells me that we are doing something that parents really value. Of course, I am also delighted by the awards that we have received. We were recently up for the massive ‘Travel Brand of the Year’ award at the Travel Marketing Awards, and were up against well-known travel industry giants. So, it’s fair to say, we were amazed to win the ‘Highly Commended’ runner up award. Where next? We are constantly pushing frontiers, so we’re always looking for brilliant, new family destinations and new experiences upon which we can add the ‘Tots’ twist’, while sticking firmly to our values of making it all about mums and dads and their little people! We want to do as much as we can to enable families to get away and to have a brilliant time whilst they are there. • Tots to Travel: 45 Broad Street, Stamford, PE9 1PX Tel: 0800 014 2770 www.totstotravel.co.uk

PETS

GALORE

This month sees the inclusion of our brand NEW Pets page. Deborah Pennell starts us off with an idea of what’s in store for you, and your pets, over the coming months

W

ELCOME to our new Pet page – a page that will be full of useful information, advice and quirky tales. You can expect to be wooed by whippets, scared by snakes, fascinated by ferrets, beguiled by budgies, transfixed by tarantulas, delighted by dachshunds and captivated by cats… We will be talking to vets and animal behaviourists. Dealing with pet care. Focussing on charities, rehoming schemes and pet sitters. Promoting dates for your diaries, and most importantly of all, featuring some of your own wonderful pets. As an owner of a large menagerie of pets, not only do I understand the emotional rollercoaster a pet owner lives on, but I also realise that owning a pet comes with huge responsibilities and a deal of expense. Whether you own a small dog, a cat or a bearded dragon, there are always daily tasks to carry out, so having time in your busy lives is something to take into consideration. All animals need a modicum of attention, even a snake. So why own a pet?…

Pets are good for you! MENTALLY Research shows that children who live in households with pets tend to be more self-confident and socially adept than those without animals. Over 50 years ago, a psychiatrist working with severely withdrawn children, noticed they became more responsive when accompanied by a dog in counselling sessions. These days we use pat pets in schools, nursing homes and hospitals all over the country to help build self-esteem, increase mental alertness and help people with depression. In several prison projects, inmates who have been given birds and small animals to take care of have become less violent, more sociable and more responsible. PHYSICALLY The physical benefits of owning a dog are obvious; a dog needs walking, preferably twice daily, therefore encouraging people to exercise. But with other pets too, studies show the benefits include, reduced risk of heart disease, lower blood pressure and heart rate.

Advice from a Professional - The Do’s and Don’ts of Buying a Dog Jessica Fawcett is Head Veterinary Nurse and an Advanced Pet Health Counsellor at Stamford Veterinary Centre.

“I

N my experience, owning a dog can be one of the most rewarding things you will ever do. They give you as much back as you give them, if not more, but you must make sure you can commit to them financially and give them the time they need.”

When introducing a dog into your family there are many important things to consider: • A dog relies on you for mostly everything; food, water, shelter, exercise, grooming, veterinary care, training and protection. • The average life span of a dog is 10-15 years. • Which breed of dog would best suit your lifestyle? • Have you considered a rescue dog/puppy? There are many wonderful puppies and dogs in our local rescue centres looking for a second chance and a loving home. If you choose to buy a puppy: • When visiting a breeder, make sure you see mum and her pups together, and ensure the environment in which they are kept is clean and warm. • NEVER buy a puppy if you have any doubts about the breeder or the situation • Check both parents for any health problems and ask if they have been screened for any inherited diseases, such as BVA hip/elbow scoring for dysplasia or DNA testing. • Look out for signs of medical problems such as a dull, scurfy coat, runny eyes or nose, coughing, sneezing, or any weakness. • Check the puppy’s age. Ideally puppies should be 8 weeks old or more before they leave their mother. New

laws state that all puppies should be microchipped by the time they are 8 weeks old. Check the breeder’s records and ask for copies of the paperwork so you are able to change the owner details. • Vaccination records should be stamped by a veterinary practice. Ask the breeder if your puppy needs any further vaccines and when they are due. • Ask if the litter has been treated for worms and other parasites, such as fleas. Find out the name of the product used and the date it was given - your vets will need this information. • And lastly, look for a happy interactive puppy. Spend plenty of time with the litter and don’t feel rushed into making a decision. Stamford Veterinary Centre 01780 763180, run free Pre Puppy Consultations with a veterinary nurse. They will discuss which breeds you might want to consider and how to prepare for the arrival of a new puppy.

BUS STOPS – Taking the 201

Jean Orpin and Sue Lee suggest some days out near to home. Choose a sunny day, take the 201 Delaine bus to Peterborough, get off at one of the stops along the way and explore our local neighbourhood.

DELAINE BUSES Delaines began with horse-drawn vehicles in the 1890s and bought their first motor bus just after World War 1. By the 1920s their main routes were established. Today those routes continue and the 5th & 6th generations of the Delaine-Smith family operate a fleet of 27 buses. The 201 Delaine bus travels between Stamford and Peterborough Bus Stations leaving from both places on the hour between 9am and 3pm (and slightly different times earlier and later). The times quoted here are for this hourly service. The full timetable can be found at www.delainebuses.com/TT201.pdf

THE PILSGATE PATH – WALK WITH (OR WITHOUT) THE DOG

until you see the entrance gate to the path on the opposite side of the road. The path returns to the road just before the Burghley Visitors’ Entrance. • Best to keep dogs on leads because there are still gaps in the hedge bordering the road. If you go into the Park, dogs MUST be on leads. • Rather than taking the bus back, go to the Garden Café for tea – there is a place to leave the dog – then walk back through the Park • For a longer walk, go towards Barnack and cross over to Mill Road. Continue until the Hereward Way path goes to the right, a lovely walk back past the golf course to Stamford.

BARNACK – A VILLAGE TO EXPLORE The Manor of Pilsgate belonged to the Sacristan of Peterborough Abbey, the official in charge of looking after the vestments and communion vessels. It once had a small church, no longer standing, but was never really more than a hamlet. It has been part of Barnack village since the late 19thC. There is a street called Pudding Bag Lane an unusual old name which probably just means that it was always a cul-de-sac. Pilsgate House is a fine 17thC house and there are some other old buildings although many houses are of fairly modern date. The Pilsgate Path links Pilsgate with Burghley Park and Stamford and is part of a more extensive footpath network connecting villages to the east of the town. Local Parish Councils and several national organisations supported the provision of the path and Burghley House Preservation Trust agreed to make it a right of way. Natural England provided a grant and local companies donated materials. PRACTICALITIES: • Bus journey is only 7 mins to Pilsgate and the bus returns from Burghley Visitors’ Entrance at 31 minutes past the hour. • Walk towards Stamford on the grass verge

2 Pictures: Barnack Tower, Kinsgley House The stone quarry at Barnack was known to the Romans and the first written reference to ‘Beornica’ was as early as the 9thC. In the Middle Ages ‘Barnack Rag’ from the quarry was used to build Peterborough, Ely and Norwich cathedrals and also some early Stamford buildings. Sleds were used to get the stone as far as the River Welland where it could be loaded on barges. The ‘Hills and Holes’ where the stone was quarried is now a site where you can see butterflies, rare orchids, the elusive pasque flower and many other wild flowers, which thrive in this sort of situation when left in its natural state. The best displays are in June and July. The lower part of the tower of Barnack church is known to architectural historians the world over. Very few Saxon towers survive and this is one of them. The tower has several Saxon features including a sundial and a decorative carved panel. Inside the church there is also a Saxon arch and a carving which may date from the same period. Another reason to visit Barnack is to see the Old Rectory where Charles Kingsley, author of the ‘Water Babies’ lived as a child. His father was Rector or the parish. The artist Wilfrid Wood who painted many pictures of Stamford lived in Barnack for many years and the Village Hall, formerly the parish school, is named after him. PRACTICALITIES: • Bus journey takes 10mins to reach Barnack and returns at 26mins past the hour (after 4pm at 41mins past). • Food is available at the Millstone Inn and snacks at the Post Office where you can pick up a free guide to the village. • Allow 1hr 15mins to explore the village but add at least another hour to visit the Hills and Holes and/or have lunch.

HELPSTON - POETIC HERITAGE John Clare was born in Helpston in 1793 and buried there in 1864. In 1820 his first book of poetry was published. This was a great success and led to a visit to London where he was feted by fashionable society. Unfortunately Clare’s mental health declined and after 1837 he spent many years in an Asylum but he continued to write poetry, recording nature and every aspect of rural life, at a time of great change. After his initial success, Clare became unfashionable and fell into obscurity with much of his poetry unpublished until quite recently. Now scholars regard him as one of our leading poets on a par with contemporaries such as Wordsworth and Coleridge. Clare’s birthplace and family home in Helpston has been transformed into a heritage centre celebrating Clare’s life. An audio tour of the village identifying places of interest is available if you visit the cottage. The church which Clare would have known well and where he was baptised and buried can also be visited and has information about the poet. Inside is a modern window by Francis Skeat, one of the 20thC’s leading stained glass artists. Nearby is the 14thC Buttercross, another landmark familiar to the poet, and the Clare Memorial. The Almshouses in West St date from 1907 and were provided by James Bradford who started work as a railway clerk at Helpston. He had a very successful career in the railway industry. PRACTICALITIES: • Bus journey is 17mins to Helpston and returns at 19 mins past the hour • Get off at the stop near the Buttercross, cross

the road and go down Woodgate to John Clare Cottage which is open on Fridays, Saturdays and Mondays 11am to 4pm (last entry 3pm) • Also at John Clare Cottage you can browse in the bookshop, look at the small gallery and light meals are available (Monday Souperday special). A more substantial meal can be found at the Bluebell next door.

FROM ‘SUMMER MORNING’ BY JOHN CLARE Now let me tread the meadow paths - While glittering dew the ground illumes, As, sprinkled o’er the withering swaths, - Their moisture shrinks in sweet perfumes; And hear the beetle sound his horn; - And hear the skylark whistling nigh, Sprung from his bed of tufted corn, A haling minstrel from the sky.

GLINTON – LEISURELY WALK & LUNCH Glinton is a very ancient settlement where Iron Age and Roman remains have been found. The name may derive from the Old English word glente meaning a look-out place which will surprise you when you visit because it appears very flat. In fact the centre of the village, around the church, really is slightly higher than its surroundings. The village was closely connected with the Abbey of Peterborough and St Benedict’s Church was a ‘chapel of ease’ (a subsidiary) of Peakirk until 1865. This makes it all the more surprising that its wonderful medieval needle spire is considered second only in magnificence to Salisbury Cathedral! John Clare attended school in the church and wrote: ‘Glinton! thy taper spire predominates Over the level landscape; and the mind…’ Surrounding the Church are a number of attractive 16thC, 17thC & 18thC houses, a reminder of the village’s agricultural past. A map and details are displayed on a board east of the church. An 18thC building is occupied by the Bluebell Inn, your destination for a leisurely lunch. Head Chef, Will Frankgate, and his wife Kelly run the pub which is recommended in the 2016 Michelin Guide. You can choose to sit in the oak-beamed bar, the bright dining room or the garden. PRACTICALITIES: • Bus journey takes 20mins to Helpston Road Bridge where you alight and it returns from there at 15mins past the hour. • The bridge crosses the A15 into Glinton and it’s a 15-20mins walk along a quiet road into the village – keep straight and aim for the spire when it comes into view. • Allow 2hrs for the walk and lunch but far better to allow 3hrs so you can appreciate the centre of the village, visit the church and have time to sit and enjoy the Village Green.

Is this new intelligent bedding the secret to a good night’s sleep? Ever wondered why you wake up too hot in bed?

A

STUDY conducted at the University of Leeds and commissioned by local sleep experts, The Wool Room, has revealed that local Stamford and Rutland wool could be the secret to staying cool and getting a good night’s sleep. Over a third of Brits attribute poor sleep to being too hot at night and it is this build-up of heat and subsequent sweating that is the most common reason for waking during the night, particularly during crucial stage 4 regenerative sleep between 2am – 5am. The Wool Room, based in Empingham, Rutland and with its leading store in Stamford, wanted to try and understand why they received so many testimonials and reviews that outlined how sleeping with wool bedding changed their lives by managing their sleeping comfort so much better than traditional bedding types. The belief is that by managing heat and humidity (each of us loses half to a litre of moisture per night) that we will obtain significantly enhanced stage 4 REM sleep. The study used a modified Sweating Guarded Hot Plate Technology, which replicates somebody sleeping and sweating at night. The study pitted commercially available (from popular high street brands) feather/ down duvets and polyester against wool to examine their thermal insulation properties and moisture management, factors essential to keeping us cool and preventing a disturbed night’s sleep. The Wool Room believes that humidity levels within the bedroom are really important for getting a good night’s sleep and such wadding samples of each duvet were pre-conditioned under two environments, in the cooling down phase from a temperature of 70° C and in the warming up phase of an environment of 17° C and 45% relative humidity – the ideal settings for the average bedroom. In both environments, it was found that the

wool duvet performed significantly better at managing moisture over an 8 hour period than both polyester and feather/down duvets, traditionally the bestselling duvet types in the UK. Feather/down wadding allowed the least amount of water to escape, with wool allowing 43% more moisture transmission than polyester and 67% more than feather and down duvets. When testing thermal insulation, wool was found to reach 35.1° C, the optimum temperature for sleep, faster than feather/ down and polyester bedding. It was also found to maintain this temperature constantly while feather/down and polyester took far longer to reach 35.1° C and were unable to maintain this, regularly reaching 36.1° C and above. This also explains why customers also report falling to sleep faster under wool than other types but also highlighted how wool will maintain body temperature more consistently. Overall, wool was found to let the most moisture escape and remain at a consistent optimum temperature when compared to feather/down and polyester duvets. Testing at two different temperatures also allowed the conclusion that these benefits are down to the fibre properties and structures of wool rather than the thickness of the duvets.

and they continue in their quest to develop the most intelligent and healthy products for the bedroom. The Wool Room believe it is vital to manage heat and humidity under the body as well as above as most mattresses contain synthetic layers (particularly memory foam) next to the surface. This without doubt causes significant humidity build up and a cause of waking. By investing in a wool mattress topper or wool mattress protector and a wool pillow in addition to a wool duvet one can create a micro climate that will adapt intelligently to the sleeper even if there are two different temperature sleepers in the same bed! It is this clever moisture management that also led the Wool Room to be awarded the Allergy UK Seal of Approval in 2015 for its entire British wool and alpaca bedding ranges, resulting in being the only natural solution for allergy, asthma and eczema sufferers. This Rutland business is so passionate about changing their customer’s lives by delivering the very best, natural, healthy sleep that they have developed the unique retail proposition of allowing customers in their Stamford store to select and design the most suitable sleep system for them and their partner. The customer experience involves trying and selecting in store the right option of duvet, pillow and underlayer and what’s more by buying the complete wool sleep system you have a 30 day sleep guarantee to ensure that you are obtaining a better night’s sleep. If not you can return it! So the next time you wake up too hot during the night think of those local sheep and their intelligent wool that can deliver the very best natural, healthy night’s sleep.

Whilst this research is ground-breaking it is not that surprising to the Wool Room as they receive rave reviews for their products daily

No ordinary cobblestone y This month has seen me interview Andrew Beeson from Beeson Wright Ltd to uncover the conversion story of Cobblestone Yard, their latest property development and headquarters on Bath Row. Clean, unfussy and raw, it has without doubt broken the traditional mould for listed property development in Stamford and is most certainly a success. Rannveig Stone

I

N March 2015 Beeson Wright Ltd undertook the redevelopment of a three-storey derelict listed warehouse and outbuildings based on Bath Row overlooking The Meadows. Over the course of 12 months, business partners Andrew, his wife Joanne and parents in law Neville and Marilyn Wright (being the two sole founders/owners of Peterborough based Kiddicare), jumped at this rare opportunity to develop this iconic structure both sympathetically and dynamically. The largest structure was converted into office space for Beeson Wright Ltd and Marville Properties with a retail unit below and the outbuildings (3 & 4 Cobblestone Yard) are now a two and one bed residential let. “The main building needed under pinning, the stone walls had structural cracks, the floors were rotten, the roof was leaking and windows were missing or boarded up. Fortunately no bats or conservation issues cropped up; however there were a few hundred pigeons to let out!” As a chartered building surveyor, Andrew headed up the project, working with Jon Richards Architectural Design based in Tallington, who has a background history of working with Zaha Hadid in London. Stuart Setchfield from Setchfield Associates in Folksworth was the structural engineer and Paul Ford from Fords of Stamford was the contracts manager. “We did our best to keep the long list of trades and materials sourced locally. By doing so it means we all know each other well and what we all expect from one another, which make communication and delivering on the job so much easier.” RJ Sutton Engineering Ltd in Nassington fabricated the stairs from scratch and installed them. “What we didn’t want was to buy one of these prefabricated kits that wobble and creak as you walk up them. We wanted something that looked industrial, as though it had been there forever and as RJ Suttons undertake a lot of agricultural projects, gantries and jobs for farms I felt they were perfect as I didn’t want anything that looked off the shelf.” The stairs were repositioned to a more

38

e yard! centralised location, and a raw, blackened steel structure was installed. It has simply been waxed so that it seals the steel and the welded joints are left visible and unrefined. The staircase is most definitely one of the key features of the building and the treads have been capped off in an engineered oak with a scrapped and oiled finish. During the survey they found that the first floor structure was rotten and not sufficient for office loadings, so they installed new steel beams for the first floor. Some of the oak beams that were sound have been stored for potential future projects and they used some parts to clad areas of the stairs and door linings to create an additional depth of character to the properties. The modern plaster boarded look has been kept at arm’s length; in fact the only part that is plaster boarded is a full height stair wall and a small area on the 2nd floor which being of single skin brick needed that extra insulation. Everywhere else, the brick work, pillars, stone work and the underside of the floors has been left exposed. Surface fixed conduits drop down to toggle switches for the lights and adding to the industrial vibe the heating and cooling is exposed in galvanized ducting. With regards to the external appearance Andrew was reluctant to follow the crowd. “Not wanting to criticize, but in planning it is sometimes all too easy to follow what has been done elsewhere in the locality. But we wanted to take our design to the next level, hence with the aluminium windows and glass balconies with oak cappings.” And the feedback they have had from the locals has been fantastic. “I had a couple come by the other day that moved away from Stamford a year ago and came back specifically to see what the building had become!” The courtyard outside was dug up, to bring in all the services, and Andrew sourced mixed granite sets imported out of Eastern Europe for the new surface finish. “They are already a few hundred years old and

hopefully will be here for another few hundred years to come, which again adds another quality to the development, and that’s where the name ‘Cobblestone Yard’ came from”. The front signage is in Times New Roman font and was laser cut out of steel sheet in individual letters for a soft and subtle finish. Not a single detail is left unturned and it screams quality. “From the outset we were hands on with the planners, holding meetings before drawing up plans. We weren’t bullish in terms of what we wanted because actually what we wanted, the building needed, so there weren’t too many challenges in getting permission to proceed.” Original drawings maximised the front elevation openings so that in the summer they could open them out fully on all floors, but the planners stipulated that the openings had to have a hierarchy, which was conceded as their vision was the correct decision. The planning department were also reluctant to allow the installation of up and down lights on the exterior even though this had been done before. However they overcame this hurdle by holding back this request in the initial planning package, allowing for the wiring and waiting for the building to be almost complete before submitting. Once the building was taking shape the planners were able to see how this lighting would actually add and highlight the building’s original architectural features and not disturb the residents of the town centre. An example of patience being a virtue! The interior fit out is aimed at quality rather than quantity. On the second floor aluminium ceiling pendants from an old 70s boat building workshop at their Oundle Marina site have been renovated and installed. Crudely cleaned down and brought back to life with modern technology, the attention to detail here is subtle but strong. Each light has a braided cord that is positioned in exactly the same manner – so that each light (there are six in total) hangs in exactly the same position. The beams are washed with LED strip lighting that is not visible to the eye and just STAMFORD LIVING JUNE 2016

No ordinary cobblestone yard! creates that subtle ambience that adds to the simplicity of the design. On the first floor they have contrasted with flat panel state of the art LED lighting, proving that mixing the old with the new can be very successful. The furniture, kitchens and sanitary ware is locally sourced and the emphasis was on clean lines that won’t date or outshine the existing features. Areas of the 2nd floor are divided by seamless glass walls, complimenting rather than detracting from the original features such as the roof light retained in its original position next to the chimney stack. From it you get a picture view of the brick work, quirky but cool! “I like to think our attention to detail is paramount. We have tried to make the most of the roof lines, exposing these internally and in the residential units we have used some of the old timber joists to make the door linings and architraves. Even though it was a rental property, to us it was still important to do a good job and give it a slightly different twist to the existing rental market offerings. That coupled with the location makes it very desirable.” Andrew says “We are not your typical property developer, only interested in squeezing as much as possible on a plot to maximise profit. We are locals and want the best for our surrounding areas and we develop and build with that ethos in mind. We know property and want to create exciting and stunning developments wherever we have the opportunity. If we wanted to maximise our profit this development would have become entirely residential and we would have found an office elsewhere. But this wasn’t our aim. We wanted a beautiful place to work and having a beautiful, airy and spacious office, with stunning views over the meadows, makes those rainy days all the more tolerable.” Alongside Beeson Wright Ltd there is Marville Properties, HID Estates Ltd and Oundle Marina Village Limited. Beeson Wright Ltd have been so pleased with every one they have worked with on Cobblestone Yard that they have kept everyone on to work on their next residential site in Market Deeping. “I like diversity and being able to do a bit of everything, we have an array of projects to our portfolio. We have outline planning permission for a mixed used scheme on Oundle Marina and commercial properties and several hundred tenants in and around Peterborough. With HID Estates we recently completed Woodlands Park on Thorpe Road, Peterborough, an attractive development that boasts 14 executive residential homes, and we are always looking for that next opportunity.” So if you have a piece of land or building that is ripe for development but would rather not undertake, you might want to give Beeson Wright Ltd a call!

PEOPLE

Tom loves life, organising Burghley concerts and Truckfest shows Tom Siddall rubs shoulders with celebrities and has the responsibility of playing a leading role in organising some of the biggest events in the country. He took time out of his busy schedule to tell Nick Rennie about his stressful but exciting life running music concerts at Burghley House and Truckfest shows at Peterborough

T

HE next time you are sitting enjoying a picnic at Burghley while watching a famous rock star strutting his stuff on stage, spare a thought for the people behind the scenes. Everything may appear to be running smoothly but there are countless logistical issues which need to be addressed before, during and after the big event. One person who knows all about the challenges is Tom Siddall, events director at Live Promotions, the company which built its reputation on the hugely popular Truckfest brand. The business has since diversified into other areas and is preparing to put on a concert by legendary former Roxy Music frontman Bryan Ferry on a stage in front of Burghley House on June 11. Tom loves being involved at the sharp end: “People think I have a glamorous job but it can be stressful too. It’s a lifestyle. You have to react very quickly to what is happening in the run-up to an event and during it and your phone is on 24 hours a day in case there is a problem.” One of the biggest issues Tom has faced at an event involved the pop band UB40 when they turned up to play at Burghley, only to find they had left their keyboards at a previous gig in Norway. He desperately rang around the big musical instrument suppliers in the area but none of them could provide keyboards in time. “As a last resort I went into town with the tour manager and the UB40 band members and we called at the tiny Stamford Music Shop,” recalled Tom, who lives at Empingham. “We asked them if we could try out the keyboards they had in the shop. “In the end they said we could take them for the concert as long as we brought them back to the shop afterwards.” Live Promotions was founded in 1972 by Colin Ward, who remains the company’s managing director. The business organised low key events until Colin came up with the idea of Truckfest

in 1983 – a show which brought together trucker enthusiasts. Tom, who wasn’t with the company at that stage, said: “The first Truckfest was at Newark. “There were only a handful of trucks on show and no celebrities. Colin used a very early form of viral social marketing to grow the event. He would stand on the side of the A1 with a CB radio talking to truckers as they drove past. He told them about Truckfest and they told their mates.” The franchise brand is now huge with eight shows across the UK. The latest one at the East of England Showground in Peterborough over the early May bank holiday saw 80,000 people attend to see attractions such as US television trucking stars from the Lizard Lick Towing crew and Ice Road Truckers. “Truckfest is now a Mecca for the trucking industry,” said Tom, who joined the company 11 years ago after working on consumer magazines at Bauer. “We now get more than 2,500 trucks entered in competitions. On the back of the event’s success we have been able to go into other event areas such as the music concerts.” Some of the nation’s biggest recording artists have featured in shows the company has organised, including Jools Holland, Take That and Status Quo, as well sports stars like Frank Bruno, Eddie ‘The Eagle’ Edwards and Damon Hill. But the event Tom is most proud of was the 2012 appearance by the Queen at Burghley House as part of the celebrations for her Diamond Jubilee. “There were so many meetings when we planned it all and it was incredibly intense but

“People think I have a glamorous job but it can be stressful too. It’s a lifestyle. You have to react very quickly to what is happening in the run-up to an event and during it and your phone is on 24 hours a day in case there is a problem.” we came away from it with such pride that we had helped bring the Queen to Stamford,” said Tom. Away from work, Tom is married to Natalie, a wedding planner who runs Cupids Wedding Shows in the region. The couple’s nine-year-old daughter Gracie and son Teddy (6) love accompanying their dad to his shows. Does Tom ever get the chance to enjoy the events he organises? “Once all the planning has been done at somewhere like Burghley and you are on site and watching Spitfires flying past, for example, there is a moment when you can step back and say ‘this is brilliant’.” • To find out more about events organised by Live Promotions, go online at www. livepromotions.co.uk or telephone 01775 768661. Blakeney National Nature Reserve Blakeney Point, a four-mile-long sand and shingle spit, has been managed by the National Trust since 1912 and is designated as one of the most important sites in Europe for nesting terns. 2

Blakeney was a commercial seaport until the early 20th century. Now the harbour is silted up, and only small boats can make their way out past Blakeney Point to the sea. Just inland from the harbour is Mariners Hill. This vantage point is believed to be man-made, probably as a lookout point for the harbour. Adjacent to the hill is the old Guildhall with a 14thcentury undercroft.

UPDATES

3.7% rise in Stamford property values adds weight to the town’s housing crisis This month, local buy-to-let expert, David Crooke, author of the Rutland and Stamford Property News, online blog www.rutlandandstamfordpropertyblog.co.uk and Managing Director of UPP Property Agents discusses Stamford’s continuing housing shortage.

T

HE country’s repute as a nation of homeowners is ‘under threat’ as the number of houses being built continues to be woefully inadequate in meeting the ever increasing needs of the growing population in the town. George Osborne used the ‘Autumn Statement’ to double the housing budget to £2bn a year from April 2018 in an attempt to increase supply and deliver 100,000 new homes each year until 2020. He also introduced a series of initiatives to help get first time buyers on the housing ladder, including the contentious ‘Help to Buy Scheme’ and extending ‘Right to Buy’ from not just council tenants, but to housing association tenants as well. Now that does all sound rather good, but the country is only building 137,490 properties a year (split down 114,250 built by private builders, 21,560 built by Housing Associations and a paltry 1,680 council houses). If you look at the graph (courtesy of ONS), you will see nationally, the last time the country was building 230,000 houses a year was in the 1960s. Looking at the Stamford house building figures, in the local authority area as a whole, only 650 properties were built in the last 12 months, split down into 590 privately built properties and 60 housing association with not one council house being built. This is simply not enough and the shortage of supply has meant Stamford property values have continued to rise, meaning they are 3.7% higher

than 12 months ago, falling 0.8% in March. The demand for Stamford property has been particularly strong for properties in the good areas of the town and it is my considered opinion that it is likely to continue this year, driven by growing demand among buyers (both homebuyers and landlords alike). So, what of supply? Well, we have spoken about the lack of new building in the town holding things back, but there is another issue relating to supply. Of the existing properties already built, the concern is the number of properties on the market and for sale. The number of Stamford properties for sale in February of this year was 133, whilst 12 months ago, that figure was 105, whilst three years ago it stood at 218… a massive drop! With demand for Stamford property rising, minimal new homes being built and fewer properties coming onto the market, that can only mean one thing ... now is a good time to be a homeowner or landlord in Stamford. For more articles like this along with David’s hugely popular weekly recommendation of the ‘3 Best Buy-to-Let deals’ in the area, please visit the Stamford Property Market Blog: www. rutlandandstamfordpropertyblog.co.uk • If you have a property and are unsure of its current value, or if you have an investment property and would to discuss it further, please do get in touch with David. LOCAL MUSIC

The Harpist of Stamford Georgie Fenn met up with the well-known harpist Eleanor Turner to catch up

W

E met in Fine Foods so that Eleanor could bring her gorgeous children with her; Artemis and Inaki. I’d never met Eleanor before ` so wasn’t sure what to expect but to describe her, I would have to say… she’s like a sunny day, walking in beaming from ear to ear with a lot of expression in her eyes – but with a few clouds in the sky here and there – because who can get anything done in eternal sunshine? Eleanor’s story winds around Stamford like a migrating bird; she’s here, there and everywhere but always comes back home. I actually asked her how she manages and she turned to her son Inaki, ‘’I’d describe it as barely hanging on,’’ he said. Not quite the answer I was looking for but similarly to a spinning top, I imagine if Eleanor stops she would topple over! ‘’My friends are always saying ‘slow down Ellie!’ but I just end up running everywhere!’’ she says. She comes across as someone who puts a lot of pressure on herself, perhaps it is the cultural pressure of the society we live in today or maybe it’ deeper rooted – I’m not sure. What can be said though is that selfishly, it’s no bad thing for us as it’s drawing out the inner music which we are lucky enough to have the pleasure of listening to. If you aren’t sure who I’m talking about yet, Eleanor Turner is a concert harpist, she plays solo as well as with orchestras and is also part of a harp quartet called 4 Girls, 4 Harps. As well as all this playing, Eleanor composes music to a very high level, collaborates with other musicians to compose music including previously mentioned Benjamin Rimmer and looks after her two young children. Eleanor says that as much as she loves performing at private functions and weddings, her heart lies in concerts where she is the centre instrument. “Too often the harp is renowned for being stuck at the back of the orchestra,’’ Eleanor says, ‘’but I like to be at the front, I’m a bit of a show off.’’ So whatever next! Well as if Eleanor hasn’t got enough on her plate she’s started writing words as well as notes. “I love expressing myself through my music and composing but sometimes with modern music, it’s harder for the audience to pick up on the emotion,’’ says Eleanor. And so – to combat this – she has recently dabbled with the written word. “I’d actually really like to get into rap music,’’ she says, “Lauryn Hill is a huge idol of mine and I’d like to try something like that.’’ Eleanor won’t be alone, she’s currently chatting with Mark Grist who is going to offer her help and advice on this new journey…it will be interesting to see what she creates next! Ellie founded ‘Cosy Concerts’, her family-orientated concert series, back in February 2013 when her daughter Artemis was nearly one year old, inspired by Artemis’ reaction to Ellie’s harp practice. Babies react instinctively with joy, fascination, chatting and dancing when they hear any music, but especially live music. Ellie decided to start a series of concerts for babies and children that their parents, childminders, grandparents etc could enjoy with them. The music is a mixture of classical, folk and jazz and they are based in and around Stamford. Ellie has a website and an online booking system for them: www.cosyconcerts.co.uk you can also follow them on twitter @cosyconcerts and on FaceBook search for Cosy Concerts in Stamford. All of the artists are hand-picked by Ellie and many of them, like Ellie, have international concert careers as well as being parents themselves.

PHIL KENT

H E A D C H E F AT T H E W I L L I A M C E C I L The William Cecil has held the position of Trip Advisor’s No1 Hotel for Food and Accommodation in Stamford, since October 2015. This month Deborah Pennell meets Head Chef, Phil Kent Tell me a little bit about yourself? To be honest I really didn’t enjoy school so I left at the age of 13 and messed around for a few years, which I’m not proud about. Then in 2007 when I was 18 years old I had a life threatening motorbike accident, which has left me on a lifetime of medication as a result of my injuries. It was a ‘wake up call’. While lying in intensive care with my parents and family around me I decided to pick my life up and focus on a career.

What jobs have you had since working as a Chef? I started my kitchen experience at The Royal Crescent Hotel, Bath as a Commis chef. I was working alongside Luke Richard. He taught me so many things about running a kitchen and helped me on my way to becoming an innovative chef. From there I progressed to Sous Chef at the Bath Arms, Longleat. At 23 years old you have a very responsible role as Head Chef at The William Cecil. How did you hear about the job vacancy? The Bath Arms was part of Hillbrooke Hotels portfolio and in 2011 they took on The Bull & Swan at Burghley and The William Cecil. They asked me to relocate to Stamford to open the kitchen at The Bull & Swan. In 2014 I moved up to The William Cecil, when there was a vacancy, and I had proved my potential. You recently won a prize for cooking Game. Tell me a little bit about the competition. My passion for Game originally came from a great friend Adam Yeo, who is a gamekeeper in Wiltshire. In August 2015 I was crowned CLA Game Chef of the Year, which is an amazing accolade. The competition was quite rigorous with six different rounds. The final round was a cook-off held at The CLA Game Fair at Harewood House nr Leeds. My winning dish was Pan Roasted Loin of Venison Saddle with sautéed Jersey Royals, Crisp Watercress, Pickled Walnuts and Blackberries with a Potato Tuile and a Madeira reduction.

Give me an interesting food fact We sell over 6,000 homemade scotch eggs a year! 800 at each of the Burghley Fine Food Fairs, which take place three times a year, and at least another 10 a day in the hotel. What is the most popular dish on the menu and how often do you change the menu? We change the menu every three months. A popular dish at the moment is the Seared Fillet of Stone Bass, Shellfish Chowder, sautéed Samphire and Confit Potato. I’ve had some very complimentary comments about this dish.

PHOTOS BY ELLI DEAN

Where did you train to become a chef? I trained at Wiltshire College and gained an NVQ 1, 2 & 3 in Hotel and Catering and also Professional Level 3 Catering & Hospitality.

Have you ever cooked for anyone famous? Gok Wan, the celebrated fashion guru, came to his Gran’s 80th party here in the Exeter room at The William Cecil.

Who is your favourite celebrity Chef? Heston Blumenthal. I find the way he deals with food very refreshing, it’s so scientific and technical. If you were tasked with cooking a dish for HM The Queens 90th birthday celebrations, what would you serve? It would have to be Game from one of her Estates. Pan seared Sandringham Pheasant Breast and Confit Leg, thyme potato, roasted carrot and maple syrup puree, port wine reduction. What are your interests outside of work? Cooking with my 2 children at home and teaching them my trade. I also enjoy playing Pool. • The William Cecil serves Lunch on Monday– Saturday 12noon-2.30pm and Dinner from 6.30-9.30pm. STRAWBERRY FIELDS FOREVER

…but there is so much more to PYO Late May/early June sees the start of the annual Pick Your Own Season. This month Deborah Pennell steps out into the fields and gives us a round up of where, when and what is available locally

J

UNE to me means Wimbledon, and strawberries and cream, although scarily, British strawberries seem to be available in the supermarkets as early as April these days. However, there is nothing better than finding somewhere local, to go and pick your own. Strawberries, raspberries, blackcurrants, redcurrants, plums and gooseberries are among some of the fruits readily available to pick.

Hill Farm Pick Your Own & Farm Shop, PE7 3UA Perched on top of a hill, just outside Peterborough, and with a wonderful farm shop, Hill Farm offers a wide variety of fruit during the picking season, June to September. PYO pumpkins and squashes finish off the season in mid October. Opening times 10am-6pm weekdays and 10am-5pm weekends CLOSED ON MONDAYS 01733 233270 www.hillfarmpyo.co.uk

Rutland Water Fruit Farm, LE15 8HB Located in an idyllic position on the South shores of Rutland Water, down the driveway to The Rutland Water Golf Club, this PYO is open from mid May until the first week in August. If you haven’t time to pick your own, a small farm shop sells ready picked strawberries, raspberries and freshly cut asparagus, grown in a field behind the site. Opening times 9am-5.30pm 7 DAYS A WEEK Nick Makey 07875 479533

Seldom Seen Farm, Billesdon, LE7 9FA With over 200 acres of PYO, this farm has an interesting variety of berries to pick throughout the summer. Their season starts in mid June and finishes mid August, when the farm closes. It re-opens in December for Geese and wonderful Christmas offerings. Opening times 10am–5.30pm. 7 DAYS A WEEK Call first if the weather is inclement. 0116 259 6742 www.seldomseenfarm.co.uk

FROM THE FARM GATE It appears difficult to find PYO Asparagus in the local area, but several places grow and sell Asparagus from the farm gate. This delicious vegetable, which has only a short growing season, normally between the end of April and mid June is a much sought after crop. Grab it while you can. J L Ashby & Co, Rectory Farm, PE8 5LS Cut Asparagus is sold at the farm from the end of April to mid June. Opening hours 8am-5pm 7 DAYS A WEEK 01832 272243 HERE’S HOW TWO LOCAL CHEFS ARE PREPARING ASPARAGUS THIS SEASON Phil Kent, Head Chef at The William Cecil serves up a scrumptious Charred Asparagus with a Crispy Duck Egg and pata negra (pictured below) and Head Chef of The Orangery at Burghley, Tomasz Niedbala, serves a delicious Ricotta and Asparagus Ravioli with Watercress Pesto and an Asparagus and Rocket salad.

FOCUS ON THE GROWER

N

ick Makey from Rutland Water Fruit Farm has been growing strawberries for over 25 years. With 14 poly tunnels on the site, he staggers the planting so that there are always 4 tunnels ready for picking. Each year he replaces three quarters of the plants, in order to prevent disease and crop failure. In recent years he has begun to grow everything in a coco peat, which is made from the husks of coconut shells, as he finds this retains moisture well and that the plants thrive in it. This year sees varieties such as Sonata, Malling Centenary and Vibrant alongside some everbearers; all chosen for good flavour and size. From mid June through July it’s easy picking, with all the later strawberries being grown at table top height, about 4ft off the ground. Raspberries are also ready to pick in early June.

Poly tunnels guard against the inclement weather and late frosts, and help Nick bring on the early varieties in a protected environment, while still benefiting from the warmth of the sun. It also means that the fruits can be picked, whatever the weather, so not so much wastage occurs. I asked him how he likes to eat his strawberries – “with natural yogurt”, he replies. Over the last few years he has supplied many top local Hotels and Restaurants. Hambleton Hall, The Finch’s Arms, The Olive Branch and Barnsdale Lodge all take his wonderful produce. Village shops in Collyweston, Ketton, Edith Weston and Barrowden all stocked his fruit last year, and he is hoping to expand his client base again this coming season.

FOCUS ON THE CHEFS Phil Kent, Head Chef at The William Cecil turns local strawberries into Cracked Black Pepper and Strawberry Ice-cream to accompany Coconut Panna cotta served with a Passion Fruit and Fennel salsa. While, The Orangery at Burghley, keep it simple with Strawberry Shortcake - shortbread with a vanilla cream, strawberries and a strawberry coulis – showing off this summer fruit at its best. BRINGING LOCAL FOOD TO LIFE

“We want to brew the qualities of Stamford into our beer” The all-new Stoney Ford Brew Co is making ales inspired by Stamford. By Matt Wright

A

S we all know, Stamford is unique. The heritage, the churches, the architecture, the pubs, the Meadows, Burghley House… the list goes on. It’s an inspirational place, even though it often doesn’t feel like it when you’re trying to park on Broad Street. And now that inspiration has motivated two local chaps with a passion for good beer to launch Stoney Ford Brewing Co. Tim Nicol from Easton on the Hill and Simon Watson from Ryhall were previously ‘shed brewers’, the name given to people – usually men – who like to disappear into the garage or shed to concoct strange liquids of which they are usually unjustifiably proud. After meeting in Easton via a mutual friend, this pair decided they had the skills, support and inclination to progress from ‘shed brewers’ to commercial brewers. Tim, a marketer, and Simon, a lawyer, were well placed to go for it, especially seeing as

62

Tim had experience of setting up of a five-gallon ‘teaching brewery’ in Tideswell, Derbyshire, just a few years ago as part of the Taste Tideswell project. Over several meetings that sometimes took place in Easton pub The Blue Bell, the idea for their microbrewery gathered pace. Fast-forward several months to December 2015 and Ryhall residents were surprised when a giant lorry drove into the village. The lorry was carrying a handful of cylindrical metal vessels that had been fabricated in Fort William. It was Stoney Ford Brewing Co’s two-and-a-half ‘brewers’ barrel’ brew kit (720 pints), but a breakdown in communications meant that Tim and Simon had to unload it and carry it into their freshly renovated brewery building (an outbuilding near Simon’s house) without a fork-lift truck. Since then Tim and Simon have been designing logos (created by

STAMFORD LIVING JUNE 2016

62 63 FOOD.indd 2

19/05/2016 11:17

Stamford design agency Artisan), honing business plans and brewing – and sampling – lots of test batches of beer. Tim has also invested in a vintage Morris Minor van as a delivery vehicle, while head brewer Simon has attended a highly regarded brewing course in Sunderland and been meticulously getting under the skin of the science of the brewing process as only a lawyer could. The duo are committed to producing consistently excellent beer and have been brewing with and learning from other local brewers including Castor Ales, Kings Cliffe Brewery and Baker’s Dozen in Ketton. They’ve also been making regular trips to scientific brew analysis lab Murphy & Son in Nottingham to make sure everything from yeast counts to bitterness ratios to clarity of beer is spot on. “We’re having lots of fun,” says Tim, “but we’re really passionate about what we’re doing and want to brew outstanding beers. We’re taking it slowly and growing outwards from here in Ryhall and Easton. We’ve already brewed Blue Bell Bitter for the Blue Bell at Easton on the Hill and it received great feedback. Next we’re set to supply the Green Dragon in Ryhall and the Tobie Norris in Stamford, and are having conversations with all the Stamford pubs. We’d love to supply as many as possible and grow from there.” Tim and Simon chose the name ‘Stoney Ford’ because it is the origin of the name ‘Stamford’ and because the town is their inspiration. “We want to brew the qualities of Stamford into our beer – we want our beers to be unique, characterful, traditional and beautiful, just like the town.” Tim and Simon’s beers will be made with English hops only and, where possible, malt grown in Norfolk and Lincolnshire. “The trend among many new small UK breweries is to use hops from America, New Zealand and Australia to create hugely hoppy beers. We want to show that you can make memorable, creative, interesting brews using native hops,” says Simon. “Our core pub beers will be quaffable brews that make you want to go back to the bar for more. But our bottled range will be different – more distinctive, stronger and designed for matching with different foods.” Many years ago, Stamford had lots of small, local breweries in and around the town, which served its many pubs. Today the town has just one working brewery – All Saints – but that is owned by Yorkshire’s Samuel Smiths and makes fruit beers mainly for export. It’s great to see local microbreweries like Stoney Ford and Baker’s Dozen of Ketton springing up to supply local pubs. Let’s all support them as much as possible so they can grow and make even more great, local beer.

OUT & ABOUT

Burghley Sculpture Exhibition 2016: METALLIC

Michael Shaw, exhibition curator describes this year’s exhibits, which look set once again to be visually compelling

Jim Unsworth, Soprano

Dido Crosby, Iron Stag

F

IRST came the Bronze Age, then the Iron Age and now the time of all metals has come to Burghley Sculpture Garden. The 2016 exhibition Metallic explores dynamic sculptures in stainless steel, copper, iron, aluminium and bronze. The ductile versatility of metal has lent it to myriad objects through much of human civilisation, as evidenced by the production of arms, armour, cooking utensils, jewellery and of course, sculptures. Exquisite bronzes were produced in ancient Egypt, Greece, the Roman Empire and beyond. Shift forwards several millennia and some of these began influencing Modernist artists, with the sinuously stretched Etruscan bronze figures prompting Giacometti’s elongation of the human body. 20th Century technological advancements, such as welding in the late 1920s, expanded possibilities for part by part construction, as typified by the welded sculptures of Gonzalez and Picasso. Their linear and relatively small fabrications took on greater mass with the emergence of artists such as Anthony Caro in

Diane Maclean, Beyond

Marjan Wouda, Scrabble the 1960s, who welded larger sculptures from industrial components. In Metallic, the techniques of casting, fabricating, welding and weaving are present. In fact, the process of casting is central to Iron Stag by Dido Crosby. It toys with conventions by revealing an interior that normally remains hidden. Its external surfaces depict the beast’s fur and antlers as one might expect, yet surprisingly, moving around the sculpture reveals it to be a hollow skin. Marjan Wouda’s joyful crab Scrabble highlights the ability of liquid metal to take on the form and appearance of other materials, by translating the transient nature of corrugated cardboard into the permanence of bronze. A shift from casting to welding is denoted by the sculpture of Jim Unsworth. He uses colour to differentiate parts and thereby underline internal differences. In Soprano, heavy metal dematerialises into painted colour, singing colour, zinging colour. Its tri-colour patination through black, yellow and pink also encompasses the greens of surrounding

foliage thanks to the holes punctured through its surfaces. Diane Maclean exploits the light responsiveness of brushed stainless steel in Beyond, a sculpture that responds to and changes with ambient light. Walking through its three portals brings these reflections of light into motion, as well as making the landscape and viewer an active part of the work. Whilst some of the sculptures depict mass through volume, others are skeletal. For example, Will Nash’s Fever, if you Live and Learn is pure structure. It arrived in parts, which Nash then assembled around an Ash tree to create a site specific response to landscape and horticulture. The slanting growth of the tree is complemented by a grid that reads variously as diamonds, rectangular lozenges or chevrons according to the observer’s relative position. Overall, Metallic reveals how sculptors can exploit the flexibility of metal in the pursuit of sculptural delights. We therefore hope you will enjoy the breadth of metallic activity on show. • Burghley Sculpture Garden is open daily 11-5 - www.burghley.co.uk STAMFORD LIVING JUNE 2016

UPDATES

The Queen’s 90th Birthday lunch at Stamford Town Hall T

O celebrate the Queen’s 90th Birthday and the 33rd anniversary of the founding of the Daniel Lambert’s Dining Club, members enjoyed a 3 course meal in the magnificent surroundings of the newly refurbished Court Room at Stamford Town Hall on Thursday 21st April. They were welcomed to the Town Hall Mayor’s Parlour by the Mayor, Cllr. Susan Sandall, who joined them in a toast to the Queen. The luncheon, based upon traditional British dishes, was prepared and served by members of The Mutts Nutts Dog Rescue Charity. This was a new fundraising initiative for the charity which is based in Stamford. They fundraise, foster and find forever homes for rescue dogs. A life sized model of Daniel Lambert, which forms part of the town’s museum collection, is generally to be found seated in the entrance hall of the Town Hall but for this unique luncheon was placed at the head of the festive table. Terry Cook, Trustee and Chair of the Mutts Nutts, spoke briefly about the charity’s work

in dog rescue and its plans for the future. She acknowledged the tenuous link between the Queen and her corgis, Daniel Lambert and his love of hunting dogs and the charity’s passion for mutts. Terry thanked the Mayor, the very helpful staff at the Town Hall and the Daniel Lamberts for their support and congratulated the Daniels on achieving their 33rd anniversary. The Dining Club members gather every 3rd Thursday of the month at various dining establishments within Stamford to enjoy a convivial lunch and they have supported many local charities with donations now totalling over £46,000. All present agreed that the luncheon was a memorable success aided by being held in such impressive historic surroundings. The Town Hall is Grade1 listed and its recent restoration combined with the provision of a lift and a state of the art finishing kitchen, has created a venue that can be hired for private and business functions and that can be enjoyed and accessed by all, including one unfortunate Daniels member, John Baxter, who recently broke his ankle and is temporarily wheelchair bound.

Do you shudder at the thought of Boot Camp or think you need to be fit to begin? Well - fear not! Rob Dulieu (proprietor) says, “We have people ranging from 16 to 59 years of age, 4’6” to 6’7” tall, from 7 stones to over 20 stones in weight, and those with two left feet or others seemingly with three! Ask any of my Campers and they will tell you that what make my classes work is the support and respect we give one another; something that sets this fitness experience apart from any other I know of. I take on new people all the time. They love the welcome they receive and each programme is adapted to work at all levels.” Rob’s programmes are ever changing, so you will never get bored and there are no mirrors, divas or big egos; just friendly, happy Campers. STAMFORD PEOPLE ABROAD

French connection I

THINK it’s always interesting to catch up with people who are still very much Stamford people but living abroad because they have such an interesting view on everything – Stamford does that to people. So this feature is going to become a regular thing and we’ll be getting into contact with fellow Stamford people that have taken their lives abroad. Louis’s story begins in reception at Stamford Junior School where he stayed through to sixth form at the Boys’ school. As a young keen, probably naughty five year old, Louis was taken down to the rugby club by his dad. I suppose you have to tire them out somehow and as Mr Grimoldby was a rugby coach himself, what better age to start? It was at Stamford Rugby Club that the talent was born and Louis’s potential started to show. His enthusiasm was contagious and he got his friends involved, eventually creating what was a very strong first team at Stamford Boys’ School. At this point, Louis is still doing really well in school but his heart is on the rugby field. This didn’t go un-noticed and by the time it came to make the decision about University,

70

he was scouted by Harlequins to play for their U21 squad in London. But we aren’t here to talk about London, two years on and Louis has moved to Paris and plays with a team called the Massy Rugby Club. “It’s a completely different sport out here,” says Louis. “They’re so laid back and just love the game, it’s not technical like it was at Harlequins, they’re fuelled by passion.” So although it’s taken a lot of getting used to, Louis is learning to enjoy the sport from a different aspect and not analyse each section of play. “It was frustrating at first,” he says, “but I’ve learnt to relax now, we’re doing really well and should get promoted to the 2nd division soon so something must be working!” Aside from the rugby Louis has been working hard and has got himself a Business degree, some very handy practically fluent French and a great bunch of mates. But despite being in the beautiful Paris, Louis says he still has lots to explore, “I’ve got as far as taking a selfie outside most of the great sites, I think it’s an inherently British struggle that we get to these places, say Le Louvre, and see the queues and something in our psyche tells us to retreat!”

Louis Grimoldby, born and bred Stamfordian, is currently playing professional rugby in Paris - Georgie Fenn catches up with him

But, there is a dark side to Paris too, as with any place – poverty isn’t far away and Louis tells me about the uneasy feeling you can get on the metro, “I wouldn’t want to be a girl travelling alone,” he says, “somehow you just don’t always feel safe, there’s quite the religious divide between Muslims and Christians and a lot of the poorer areas in Paris are Muslim communities.” This probably won’t shock you after all that’s happened in Paris over recent times, but it’s still unsettling to hear first-hand – and so neglected by the media and government, just left there to simmer undisturbed until something drastic happens and they are forced to deal with it. So will Louis return to Stamford? “I can definitely see myself settling down there in the future,” he says, “but I’m definitely sticking to rugby for now.” As with all talented young players Louis is being well looked after by an agent, so whatever move he makes it will be for progression and in his best interests and I don’t know about you but I think he’s a really exciting player. Although Massia (where Louis lives) has nothing on Stamford…the postal service sounds absolutely horrendous…they’re looking after him for now and I’m sure Stamford will reclaim him eventually. Louis says, “the more you’re away, the more you appreciate how beautiful Stamford really is.”

STAMFORD PEOPLE ‘Friendship through service’ is the unofficial motto of the Inner Wheel, founded in 1924 by the wives of Rotarians to promote personal service, friendship and international understanding. Alysia Anderson talks to Stamford resident Zena Coles, the new President of the Association of Inner Wheel Clubs in Great Britain and Ireland

Zena Coles T

HE Inner Wheel is one of the world’s largest voluntary service organisations for women, working across 104 countries to improve the lives of those in need. It began in Manchester when wives of Rotarians met to set up a ladies’ club to run along Rotary lines. With post-war deprivation and class inequality much in evidence, Rotary Clubs had regularly involved the wives in projects to help alleviate suffering. Gradually, these unofficial women’s groups became more established, with social events and speakers organised. The Manchester club became the first official Inner Wheel Club, its name chosen to indicate a sense of support alongside the Rotary connection. These initial 27 ladies raised funds and knitted 80 woollen baby garments for the local hospital. From such modest beginnings the organisation grew to comprise 680 clubs in Great Britain and Ireland, divided into 29 Districts with around 17,000 members. The International Inner Wheel was formed in 1967 and now has 100,000 members worldwide, including representation at the United Nations. Over the past 12 months, the Inner Wheel Clubs in Great Britain and Ireland have raised an astonishing £1.3 million for charities such as Parkinsons’ UK, HomeStart, Young Carers, Mary’s Meals, School in a Bag, WaterAid and many more both at home and abroad. FROM PARISH TO PRESIDENCY The Stamford club falls into District 7 which covers groups from Sleaford all the way to Towcester. Each club has monthly meetings (in Stamford, at the George every first Monday evening) while Districts meet three times a year and a national conference is held each April. A new national president is elected each year, beginning their tenure in July. About to don the chain of office is Zena Coles, the current Vice-President. Zena strikes me as a perfect choice, for her enthusiasm, humour and personality shine through within the first few seconds of our interview. Zena gave me some background about her journey up to this point. “When my husband Lionel died in 1992 I took over the chairmanship

of the Macmillan Stamford and Bourne Committee which Lionel and I had formed. Thanks to a lot of support from the Stamford Mercury (where Lionel had been manager until his retirement in 1990) and other local organisations and people, we raised an amazing amount of money. We were able to support two Macmillan nurses in the area. I became a Parish Councillor in Bainton and Ashton and eventually Chairman (I obviously got a taste for being bossy!) before moving to Barnack in 2011. I was District Chairman of District 7 in 2004 and the IW club of Stamford were so wonderful in their support for me in that role, coming with me on visits and being generally morale boosting. They are now being equally amazing in their support and interest for this next major step. It means such a lot to me and epitomises the friendship that is Inner Wheel. From being District Chairman I moved on to represent the District on the Association governing body and then was elected Constitution Chairman. My brief was to update where possible, which was fascinating: if you changed one thing it meant changes to something else, so it had to be done slowly and thoroughly with the correct amount of legal support.”

“We are always falling about laughing…”

A RALLYING CRY Zena revealed that as President she will visit every District in the country. “It’s a mad schedule. For example, I will be in Ireland, then the following day at a district rally on the Isle of Skye, then off to Kent and Surrey, with a quick trip via home to grab some clean knickers!” Each president nominates a charity of their own choosing for the IW to support that year. This is often a cause close to home. For example, the outgoing president, Trish Douglas, chose Parkinsons’ UK after her husband died of the disease. Zena has chosen Beat (www.b-eat. co.uk), a charity that supports those suffering with eating disorders. “My grand-daughter was hospitalised last year with anorexia which developed during her A-levels. Beat doesn’t have the funds to run a full-time helpline but does what it can to support sufferers and their families and spread the word via young ambassadors who have personal experience of an eating disorder. Our support is not just about fundraising but also giving them a platform.” The requirement to be a Rotarian wife no longer applies to membership of Inner Wheel and it now welcomes new members from many walks of life. However, as Zena explained: “New members should have our ethos of helping. It’s a fantastic organisation and is good for your health: you can fundraise, enjoy yourself and make new friends; we are always falling about laughing. I am very proud to be a part of it.” • For more information visit www.innerwheel.co.uk or call 0207834 4600.
