he demography gods have been angry with us these last few months, giving us Poundland, Domino’s, Wetherspoon’s and KFC (according to rumour). Before that they had seemed much happier, sending us Fat Face, Crew Clothing, Rohan, The White Company and the Cosy Club, amongst others. But are chains, even those that are not ‘smart & up-profile’, such a bad thing for the town? I think they certainly help strengthen Stamford’s footfall and general position as a national shopping centre. And judging by the rude health of East Stamford, which we write about this month, starting on Page 18, the two can live happily side by side, perhaps even strengthening each other. I was amazed to discover 65+ enterprises altogether in East Stamford, almost all independent, significantly more than were there when we last did the survey in 2007, all very bullish about their prospects for the future. And it’s important to remember the contribution of enlightened landlords in this process, making decisions for the longer-term rather than quick gains. I would be interested in your views on the chain vs. independent issue; I am not pretending I know the answer. Email me at stamfordliving@btopenworld.com

More reasons to come and talk to us: Goodwin Property Services, led by Robert Goodwin and Simon Burton, have built their reputation living and working in the local area for 40 years. The local market is highly complex making this experience and knowledge invaluable when assessing values, changes in supply and demand as well as the numerous other factors involved in the buying and selling process. The unique combination of experience we have at our disposal really does mean we can provide levels of advice, in terms of using property for investment or retirement planning, that is difficult to match. If you are thinking of going this route drop in for a chat and we will explain more.
Being recognised as the area’s leading independent agent is also something we value highly. The ability to react quickly to changes in the market should not be ignored. We are not target driven but want to act in our client’s best interests at all times and continue to build our reputation. You are dealing with the people who run the company and really care about what you think. Our reputation is very important to us. We really do believe that honesty and integrity are two of the greatest tools at our disposal and, combined with the level of professionalism we demand of ourselves, lead to a level of service that is hard to beat. Savvy Style Update
Sally Stillingfleet and her husband Nick surrendered themselves to the delights of John Lewis’s Style Advisors in Ladies Fashion and Menswear respectively to learn about the whole experience and hopefully come away sartorially smarter in every way
For Him
I am very open about what to wear – I love advice and guidance, but Nick not so much! He reaches for black and white and has so carefully honed his ‘fashion’ likes and dislikes that his wardrobe is dull and conservative. Can Ian the Menswear Fashion Advisor change him from his black ‘V’ neck jumper and jeans into a more fashionable version of himself? Ian is a consummate fashion expert and gentleman. His challenge was to get Nick suited and booted for work, through to advice on a better mix of casual separates which would work together and not leave him resembling Top Gear’s James May! Ian is so approachable and very knowledgeable about the John Lewis stock and all the fashion details that are so often overlooked. I was very impressed with the neat dark navy Paul Costelloe suit. We liked the mean lapels and slim fitting trousers, later teamed with a more casual shirt by Ted Baker his options had already increased! I especially like the Kin (John Lewis’s more Fashion forward range) white shirt worn with what I named the Gary Barlow waistcoat (also Ted Baker) and slimmer 511 Levi’s. The slightly padded and more fitted Ted Baker navy jacket finished off the outfit once again. This service is complimentary and transformative. The combination of innate stock knowledge combined with a nod to fashion is just what Nick needed. Ian is a tonic to all those men floundering in fashion wilderness. Men can take advantage of Ian’s expert advice on Saturday March 29th 10am – 4pm on the Lower Ground floor. Find out about the latest tailoring trends to timeless classic suits. Ian will be on hand to find the perfect suit for you. As well as this he can help with your selection of shirts, shoes, ties and accessories to help complete the look. To book an appointment please call 0844 693 1752. £100 of John Lewis vouchers will be offered towards the outfit of the first customer who books and purchases a suit on the day using this service. This offer is not open to John Lewis Partners and dependents.

For Her
My friendly Fashion advice was delivered by Lorraine and Alison (not Trinny and Susannah!) in the special suite of rooms dedicated to the service. A two hour complimentary service is primarily for finding specific outfits for customers, such as Mother of the Bride or dressing for a special occasion. But I was treated to the new ‘Style Profile’ service which approaches the targeted shopping experience in depth. The questions the girls asked me are aimed at drawing out information about personal style, my body proportions and what would suit my body shape and how to shop accordingly. There is emphasis on accessorising and a fully comprehensive in depth colour analysis with a take-away shade card. There is even advice given on the best brands stocked for me. Armed with my newly acquired know-how Lorraine and Alison darted around the shop floor like heat-seeking fashion missiles, finding me outfits which I could not have chosen better myself. We thoroughly enjoyed the experience and, who knows, you could find out something about yourself as we did along the way! The Style Profile service is £125 redeemable against a shop of £500 and over. The Style Profile price is correct at the time of going to print.

Wellbeing for mums-to-be Genevieve Potter looks at some important nutritional advice, alongside the very best beauty and wellbeing treatments for mums-to-be
S
P
regnancy can leave a woman feeling less than swell. The first few months can be fraught with sickness, tiredness, even hormonal skin flare-ups, all contrary to the rose-tinted image of a glowing mother-to-be. Some beauty treatments, (for example, aromatherapy massages), aren’t recommended until you are through your first, three month trimester of pregnancy. But once that stage has passed, most pregnant women (especially those who already have children), find that they need some serious pampering like never before. Experienced therapists will be well-used to taking care of pregnant women; adjusting positions (side instead of front) and ensuring that the treatments are totally suitable for pregnancy (for example, pregnant women have a heightened sense of smell which should be taken in to account when potent aromatherapy oils are used). The most common issue affecting pregnant women is the overwhelming sense of fatigue. A good night’s sleep is vital and to ensure that you also have plenty of energy throughout the day, the single most important thing to do is to review and adapt your diet; to ensure you’re getting all of the right nutrients to care for you and your new baby, as well as avoiding anything which is potentially harmful.
L
eading nutritionist Sophie Driver provides some simple guidelines for mums-to-be. Although you don’t need to “eat for two” (you only need about an extra 200 calories in the last three months), you should make sure that you’re eating nutrient-dense foods that are going to nourish your baby without leaving you depleted.
12
Include: ✔ Complex carbohydrates (brown rice, quinoa, bulgar wheat, rye, barley, oats) to minimise cravings and improve energy ✔ Pulses to support hormone and blood sugar balance ✔ Fruit and vegetables ✔ Essential fats in fish, nuts, seeds and oils – for your baby’s brain, eye and nervous system. These also support female hormones, mood and can help alleviate cravings ✔ Protein in eggs, fish, poultry and lean meat – for hormones, muscles and enzymes ✔ Live yoghurt – to help balance gut flora Avoid: ✖ Raw eggs, pate, meat, shellfish, sushi, soft or blue cheeses – these can be contaminated with bacteria / parasites ✖ Green/ or sprouting Potatoes – these contain poisons that have been linked to Spina Bifida ✖ Ready to eat salads in bags – may contain listeria ✖ Sweets, chocolates, caffeinated and fizzy drinks, preservative, sweeteners, alcohol and of course, cigarettes ✖ Liver and cod liver oil – may provide too much vitamin A Tuna/swordfish – may contain mercury Sophie at The Broad Street Practice can offer mums-to-be expert nutritional advice on a 1:1 basis and can also help mums post-pregnancy, with tailored nutritional packages that are simple to follow and will increase energy levels and help to lose weight safely and naturally. • Sophie Driver, dip ION, CNHC registered The Broad Street Practice Tel: 01780 480889 Thebroadstreetpractice.co.uk
teph at Walford and Ferris is a highly experienced therapist who recommends two bespoke treatments for mums-to-be. Firstly an Indian head massage (£34 for 45 minutes). This is a natural way to relieve stress and tension headaches which pregnant women can experience; as well as releasing “knots” in the neck, shoulders and upper back. The massage will also loosen and stimulate the scalp, to improve circulation and improve the condition of the hair and skin. The Decleor sumptuous “mother-to-be” package (£60 for 90 minutes) is a truly nurturing experience. This blissful face and body treatment includes a comforting tummy mask that actively helps to reduce the risk of stretch marks, plus a draining massage to limit water retention, lightening ‘heavy’ legs. Finally, a skin-brightening facial ensures you’ll look your glowing best. This package can be taken from the third month of pregnancy until the due date. As an added bonus, book one of these treatments at Walford & Ferris and you’ll also receive 25% off your next beauty treatment; either pre or post pregnancy. • Walford & Ferris, 2 Maiden Lane, Stamford PE9 2AZ Tel: 01780 764591

Stamford Ladies Lunch Club
Stamford Ladies Lunch Club has been dining out for 30 years. Now benefiting from an exciting new menu, they would like to share those delicacies with new members! A club member writes: “At Stamford Ladies Lunch Club there is a diverse menu that caters for polished taste buds and inquisitive minds. High quality food and entertainment keeps members coming est 1983 back for seconds. You don’t have to take the plunge on your own, however there are plenty who do, and tables for new members make that an easy step with conversation flowing easily in no time. Equally we sometimes find group reservations in our diary, friends who join together looking for something to stimulate more than just their taste buds….and our speakers offer just that! The icing on the cake, so to speak (we don’t do baking!), is that we welcome members from all around the area, not just in Stamford. “We meet every other month at one of three local venues; The Haycock Hotel in Wansford, Toft Country House Hotel and Greetham Valley Golf Club. If you haven’t tried them before, we are sure you will find them perfect for enjoying both great food and great company. You may also discover on joining that you have a new friend just round the corner, whom you would like to travel with many of our members share the driving. “Topics are varied month on month and are selected based on members’ similar interests and thirst for knowledge. From calendar girls to local history, along with talented writers and singers, we are sure there is something to tempt your taste buds! “We are offering you a chance to join us for lunch at the discounted member’s price of £17 to see what is on offer. Lunches start at 12 for 12.30 and last 3 to 3.5 hours, and include a two-course meal and a speaker. We also host informal coffee mornings for members at The William Cecil in Stamford.” • Contact either Mary or Hazel and they will be delighted to tell you more. Renaissance Health and Beauty 20th Anniversary 2014 sees Renaissance Health and Beauty Therapy celebrating 20 years in business. No mean feat in these challenging times. Fiona Hood has seen many changes in the industry over the years and her business has had to move with the times. “I have developed the business in line with my passion for resultsdriven Hi Tech treatments that clients are now striving for; and in line with this the business has changed beyond all recognition from when I first started.” Fiona is known for innovative anti-ageing treatments that can be customised for clients and in the past couple of years has attended many seminars and training in machinery and cosmeceuticals, only recently adding a
treatment for thinning hair in ladies and gents. “This treatment was trailed in the salon over five weeks and the results are amazing and effective in 95% of cases. Specialist serums are introduced into the scalp with dermaroller and a course of homecare prescribed to back up and enhance salon results.” Fiona was recently invited to apply for membership to the Royal Society of Medicine and has now been accepted as a Senior Associate member. A high accolade indeed. We congratulate her on 20 years of endeavour and success. • 2 Mallory Lane, Stamford, PE9 2AZ Tel: 01780 763768 www.renaissancebeauty.co.uk
A few days with Uppingham Summer School is the perfect way to entertain the children, or yourself, over the Easter holidays. Various sports courses will help the energetic burn off lots of energy, whilst baking some Easter goodies or making some Easter crafts is perfect for those who prefer quieter pursuits! Highlights this Easter include Cricket and Tennis coaching courses. These popular sessions are led by former England, Kent and Leicestershire cricket professional Trevor Ward, and by LTA CCA performance qualified tennis coach James Muir. Who could resist the opportunity to learn how to bake lots of Easter goodies? The Easter Baking for Kids course always sells out; everyone doing the course becomes the most popular person in the family as they come home each day armed with all the delicious things they have made! Easter Arts & Crafts is another opportunity to get creative; young artists will have lots of fun making things like decoupage bunnies and painted eggs. If you are an adult wanting to learn something new, why not try the Bridge for Beginners course? Or you could have the satisfaction of restoring an old piece of furniture to its former glory by doing the Upholstery course. Beginner or expert, young or old, there really is something for everyone at Uppingham Summer School. • Further details of all the courses can be found on www.uppinghamsummerschool. co.uk or by phoning 01572 820800.

In 2013 they were named ladies’ independent retailer of the year and independent family retailer of the year and we were also highly-commended in the men’s independent retailer of the year category. The ‘East End’ of Stamford East End of towns & cities have become much more fashionable in recent years (note London’s burgeoning, trendy and hi tec east end) and Stamford’s is no exception, having been on a sharp upward trend ever since M&S became the anchor store in 2007. Nicholas Rudd-Jones takes a stroll around and is amazed

ST PAUL’S ST Coleman’s (No 1, Tel: 01780 762324) is the first shop you come to in St Paul’s St. It is a highly respected regional stationer that has been in Stamford for over 25 years. I love the friendliness of the staff here; there is always someone ready to serve you. They also do a brilliant home delivery service. Cancer Research (No 3, Tel: 01780 766548) Penny Lane (No 3A) opened last autumn, selling a range of new and second hand gifts and clothing, as well as books and toys. It is run by Stamford College and staffed by young people with learning difficulties or disabilities.
O2 Mobile Communications (No 4, Tel: 01780 763281) opened its doors shortly before M&S in 2007. They have become another anchor tenant at this end of town and have a good reputation for quality service.
Everyone says how discreet Domino’s Pizza looks on the corner (No. 6, Tel: 01780 765556); and most people by now have been visited by one of their ‘mobile customer care operatives’.

Miss Pickering Flowers (No 7, Tel: 01780 482961) Simone Pickering’s reputation as a leading national florist continues to grow. She recently had a five-page feature in the Mail on Sunday magazine, You. I have never been less than delighted with the flower arrangements that she creates. St Paul’s St Bookshop, (No 7, Tel: 01780 482748) A fascinating range of second-hand books, with local history and motoring books a particular speciality. A father and son business.
Equilibrium, (No 7, Tel: 01780 757579) has been in this spot for five years now. Sam Hiseman commented: “A customer summed up our location yesterday when she described it as a ‘hidden treasure’. We love being here, and also working together with our business neighbours on weddings – hair, beauty and flowers all in one place!”
The Hair House has been on its present site (No 7, down a passageway, Tel: 01780 762687) nearly twenty years now. “We needed more space,” Roger Curtis remembers, “but initially I was not sure being down a passageway …but people love it down here, they feel very private.” Roger’s partner Sue is famous for her hospitality and conviviality. This salon often feels like a party!
The Mad Turk (No. 8-9, Tel: 01780 238001) has become Stamford’s most popular restaurant in the blink of an eye, through the sheer hard work and determination of husband and wife team Kaz & Shelly. The combination of well cooked authentic Turkish food and great hospitality seems to be the recipe. They get their meat from Grasmere Butchers, another business based in east Stamford. They are soon planning to expand upstairs.
Stamford Wine Company (No 10, Tel: 01780 757844) Blake Johnston has created a lovely stylish wine bar and wine merchants that is an incredibly relaxing and enjoyable place to spend the evening. And as the weather improves, there is a garden out back to die for! Highly recommended.
The Loft Hair Boutique (10a upper floor, Tel: 01780 757781) was opened by Claire in January. She is a very experienced hair stylist who has most recently worked in Charles Worthington in Covent Garden. She has been joined by Anna doing ‘Moo’s makeup’ and Sarah doing gel nails. The place has a vintage chic style about it which makes it a really fun and vibrant place to be, full of personality and warmth, quite different from the chrome and marble norm.

ST PAUL’S ST cont. The Tobie Norris (No 12, Tel: 01780 753800) If you were a newcomer to Stamford you would imagine that the Tobie Norris was one of its oldest pubs, but it has still a way to go until its 10th birthday. But it already feels like one of the great hospitality institutions of the town.
Cycle Wright Co. (No. 40 Tel: 01780 482899) opened in Stamford a few months ago and combines good product knowledge with a wide range of gear. Another very welcome newcomer to the area. They are holding a number of mechanic evenings at the Stamford shop, next one is on Tues 4th March.
Pride of Stamford Dry Cleaners (No. 13, Tel: 01780 755432) is the place to take your clothes if they need first-rate attention from an independent business that cares. Kim Smith’s Hair Design (1st floor, No.13a, Tel: 01780 755155) Stamford Endowed Schools Shop (No. 36a, Tel: 01780 750349) supply school uniforms and other accessories and equipment for the three schools. But there’s also lots of equipment and kit which are not school-specific, so worth checking out.
Celsius of Stamford (Tel: 01780 678679), tucked away in Marshall’s Yard, is a joy to visit, especially on a cold winter’s day, as you can see the stoves ‘under fire’ and warm yourself up in the process. There are a range of traditional and modern brands stocked, including the delightful Dovre retro range
Arch Label Agency (No. 43, Tel: 01780 764746) Susie Archer moved her whole business last May from smaller premises, and she is delighted with the move. “Footfall is much stronger and I have very visible window space.”
Stamford Independent Travel (No. 44A, Tel: 01780 763030) is full of fun and great ideas. Run by Emma, supported by a great team including her mum Dawn, you are always guaranteed expertise and fun. You feel like your holiday has begun as soon as you go in. “Every customer is different,” Emma told me, “so we don’t start by selling, we start by listening. These days we find we are doing a lot more tailor-made itineraries, which we love.”
BROAD ST EAST END Bakehouse Kitchen Studios (31a Broad St, Tel: 01780 767928), tucked down the passage, creates kitchens with an emphasis on style and elegance. Petra Studios (No 31, Tel: 01780 482858). Petra Johnson moved her hairdressing and health & beauty business to the current site nearly 20 years ago. And she has a novel explanation as to why she chose it: “The postcode 1PJ is the same as my initials. We were always meant to be here.” And the business certainly has a wonderful feel about it, incredibly friendly, open and light. Stamford Shoe Repairs (No 30, Tel 01780 762813) A friendly and efficient service. Keeping Stamford on its feet since 1992. Quality at affordable prices. Shoe Repairs, key cutting, shoe care and engraving. Chipped car keys. Hairline (No. 28, Tel: 01780 755039)
Stamford Car Wash (No. 36) is one of the most established businesses in the ‘east end’. It was set up by Stephen and Ghislaine Chandler back in 2000. “What appealed to us about this location,” Ghislaine explained, “is that there was plenty of space but it was still central. People can get their cars cleaned whilst they get their hair done opposite or go shopping. And we have made many great friends with the other businesses around here in that time.”

Age UK (No. 49, Tel: 01780 482154) has been a stalwart of the street for many a year. I really like their new system whereby you are told how much your donations made when sold.
Voujon Indian Restaurant (No 26-27, Tel: 01780 757030 www.voujon.co.uk ) is a very agreeable spot with good food. Premier Mobile (No 25, Tel: 01780 755777)
M&S is the beacon store that has made many retailers and customers flock to this end of town. The food hall is always busy and full of delicious foods. And if you hate queuing at the checkout, this is the supermarket for you as there is hardly ever a queue.
Brayshaw Morey (No. 24, Tel: 01780 750840) accountants has been in business for over 25 years and the Stamford office was established over seven years ago. This location has given them greater visibility in the town.

Broad St Practice (No 20/21, Tel: 01780 480889) Anthea Bentley and Perry Westbrook were one of the first businesses to discover the attractions of this end of town, and last year they celebrated their 10,000th patient coming through the door. Practitioners include osteopaths, acupuncturists, a hypnotherapist, a sports and therapeutic massage therapist, a nutritional therapist and a specialist in skin camouflage make-up. ST GEORGE’S ST STAR LANE Mobile World, Star Lane (Tel: 01780 762647) The Woolroom (No. 8, Tel: 01274 392096) is a joy to behold, with beautiful wool bedding products and much else besides (I couldn’t resist the Herdy mugs!) Wool is a natural, ecofriendly, renewable source, which when used in bedding has the ability to regulate heat and humidity, making you neither too hot, nor ever cold.
Just opposite M&S, we reach Precision Outdoors (27/29, Tel: 01780 762165). Be careful about going in if you are an outdoors equipment junkie, because you are bound to find something that you have to have…

Tinc (29) is a funky new stationery, gifts and gadget store launching shortly. It began life in Bath only a few years ago and has already established a dozen or so branches across the south of England. Jos Baker, Director, told me; “We began to get to know the area better as a result of having a stand at the Burghley Horse Trials; and also I was brought up in the Oakham area.” Their name is an acronym for ‘think, inspire, create’ and their shop will certainly add a dash of colour and youthful appeal to this part of town. Bubble & Squeak (30, Tel: 01780 755799), offer boys and girls clothes from newborn to eleven years old. Run by Sarah and Jess, a mother and daughter team, it opened three years ago. It was Jess’ growing family that started them on the adventure. They wanted to find reasonably priced clothes, toys and gifts that were a little bit different. Their brands deliver just that. Grasmere Farm Shop (No. 34, Tel: 01780 765563) offers traditional Grasmere Farm pork products, together with a full range of beef, lamb and poultry, cooked meats, free range eggs, sauces and more.
The museum exhibition on the library is worth a visit – it’s absolutely brilliant, and no-one however not into history will get bored by it. It’s in the room in front of you as you enter the double doors into the library.
North Side Chez Soi (No 26-27 High St Tel: 01780 482845) Sue Growcott, the owner, has also noticed a change with all the new developments at the end of the High St; “Previously, people would only go so far before turning round, now they will go much further.”
Anand Shoes (No. 28, Tel: 01780 767688) is one of the big new success stories at this end of town, selling high-end shoes, shoe repairs, keys and recently a foray into Steiff bears has proved very successful. Anand’s was runner-up in the Stamford & Rutland Business Awards for customer service least year – just pop in and you will find out why.
The Stamford Delicatessen NEW (39B, Tel: 01780 755772) opened its doors only last month. Kelly Combes, the owner, told me; “I’m sure there’s a place in the Stamford market once again for an independent deli, and this end of town has so much going for it now, with many new shops and restaurants opening up recently.” “We have been made to feel really welcome by the other local traders, and are working with the Mad Turk and selling their dips and delicacies in the shop, which are proving very popular.”
South Side Johnson’s Dry Cleaners (No.42, Tel: 01780 763184) offers a great service; efficient, good quality and very good on minor alterations and repairs Martin’s Newsagents (No.47, Tel: 01780 764738) You can’t beat the friendliness of this store; they always seem to put a smile of your face. They also deliver my newspaper every day, and do a fine job of it. Paper Kisses (No. 48) Cook (No. 50, Tel: 01780 766051) frozen foods is definitely worth a try. It really is true that you can pass off any of the dishes here ‘as if’ you had cooked them yourself. The quality is often astonishing. Friendly team led by Marcus.
MAIDEN LANE Turning left down Maiden Lane, the shopkeepers here are also experiencing a growing footfall. Gallery Stamford (No 3, Tel: 01780 753737) offers very good value prints and a first-rate framing service. Walford & Ferris (No. 2, Tel: 01780 764591) Hunter Stevens Accountants (No.5/6, Tel: 01780 761920) are a proactive and forwardthinking firm of accountants offering a range of professional accounting, taxation and advisory services to businesses and individuals. Pirrie Opticians (No 7, Tel: 01780 753488) has been established on this site since 1983. They have always loved the location with easy access by car and disabled access from the side of the building.
King’s Head Pub (No. 19, Tel: 01780 753510) under new mgt, this is offering some cracking food and cosy ambience. We had Sunday lunch there and were very impressed – great food, great value. PJH Law (No. 18a, Tel: 08448 505805) was launched in 2001 in the same month as Stamford Living, so we have always felt a great affinity with their business. They moved to this premises only in the last few months, and are very pleased to be back right in the heart of the town. Philip Hyland and his team specialise in employment law. Pennies from Heaven (No. 17, Tel: 01780 481634) is viewed by many as Stamford’s most quintessentially traditional tea and coffee house. Well worth a visit. Stamford Art Gallery (No. 10, Tel: 01780 764074) offers the work of local artists and is well worth a look around. Natural (10a, Tel: 01780 791113)
Purely You (No. 51a, Tel: 01780 767307) health & beauty.

Aquilia Acupuncture Nicholas Rudd-Jones went along to Scotgate to find out more about Stamford’s Specialist Acupuncture Practice Aquilia is Stamford’s leading acupuncture clinic and has a very experienced team comprising Lianne Marie Aqulina (BSc Hons MBAcC ATCM) and Corinne Alexander BA(Hons)LicAc MBAcC, who are both Members of the British Acupuncture Council. Lianne Marie Aquilina is a university teacher and writer as well as a practitioner, which makes her fascinated in all aspects of the profession. She has a book being published in the autumn by Elsevier called ‘Acupuncture for IVF: An integrated approach to treatment management’, which is set to become the authoritative text in its field. When I met her I was impressed that she was able to combine being very knowledgeable in her field with great skills of empathy and communication which allowed her to explore issues very easily and efficiently. The first thing I appreciated is that treatment is about looking at a person in the whole – their lifestyle, psychological as well as physical circumstances before settling on a particular course of treatment. Lianne identified in my case that my kidney energy levels could do with a boost, and she performed a couple of treatments to get me off on the right track. First, she carried out a Ayurveda pressure massage which was heavenly – applied pressure to ancient therapeutic holistic points on the surface of the body, using a fragrant traditional Ayurveda medicinal oil and an organic herbal scrub which was sprinkled lightly over the skin. Then a short acupuncture treatment focusing on my lower legs, feet and arms designed to boost the kidney energy levels. I went away much fleeter of foot and with a feeling of renewed energy and optimism. I will be back soon! Acupuncture Awareness Week 3-10 March has a focus on Back Pain and Corinne Alexander notes a new study showing many of us are risking a back pain epidemic caused by unhealthy habits and sedentary lifestyles. The study found that almost half of us admit to eating on their lap, 40% complain they sit at a desk all day and over a third admit to watching TV or films in bed. 74% say they repeatedly use painkillers to deal with their discomfort rather than addressing the root cause of the problem. Corinne comments: “Painkillers often numb the end symptom and mask the problem but do not address many of the combined underlying causes of back pain. Simple lifestyle changes, alongside acupuncture, could save millions of people taking medication every day. It’s important to recognise the impact our behaviour has on our bodies.” The National Institute of Clinical Excellent (NICE) recommends acupuncture for persistent, nonspecific lower back pain. • To book a free 20 minute consultation with Corinne Alexander please call her on 07737 172939. Churchill Summer Camps
Why not give your child a holiday to remember and let them join in the fun at Churchill Summer Camps? Churchill have been operating in the Stamford and Peterborough area for over 20 years and for the past two years in Oakham during the school holidays. They are not just a sports camp, offering an extensive range of over 30 activities (quad biking, swimming, archery, arts and crafts, bouncy castle,
TAX SAVING TIPS FOR THE NEW YEAR Tax is a subject that excites very few people but, as Garry Wiles of Peterborough Accountants, Stephenson Smart & Co explains, ignoring tax planning opportunities can cost you. Here are a few areas for consideration before the end of the tax year deadline. 1. Using allowances of both spouses Ensure full use of each spouse’s tax free allowance and basic rate tax band. Given that the personal allowance cannot be transferred between spouses at present it may be necessary to consider gifting of assets between spouses in order to distribute income more evenly. 2. Preservation of child benefit If you are in receipt of child benefit and either you or your ‘live in partner’ have income in excess of £50,000 then you may have to pay back/forego some or all of your child benefit. The impact of this new tax charge can be reduced by considering how profits are extracted from family businesses, or by making additional pension contributions. 3. Family companies If the payment of bonuses to directors or shareholders is under consideration give careful thought as to whether payment should be made before or after the end of the tax year. The date of payment will affect the date tax is due, possibly the rate at which it is payable and also possibly entitlement to income related benefits such as child benefit. 4. Capital gains tax For 2013/14 the first £10,900 of capital gains per individual are free of capital gains tax. Each spouse has their own exemption which is not transferable and cannot be carried forward if unused therefore it may be possible to sell assets standing at a gain prior to the end of the tax year to use the annual exemption. Contact Stephenson Smart if you’d like to discuss the issues involved in pre year-end tax planning and any appropriate action you may need to take. • For more information and tax advice contact Stephenson Smart & Co Tel: 01733 343275 or visit www.stephensonsmart.com
orienteering, cooking to name a few) to suit all ages and interests. The day camps are a great opportunity for children to make new friends and to try out new activities in a safe environment, surrounded by supportive and experienced staff. They now run at every school holiday in Peterborough and have extended the number of weeks in Stamford over the summer. They are happy to accept payment by childcare vouchers. • Please telephone 01780 753461 or email info@ churchillsummercamps.co.uk for further details. STAMFORD LIVING MARCH 2014

Garden Inspirations opens at Welland Vale Located on the outskirts of Uppingham between the old A47 and the bypass, few people know of the existence of Welland Vale Nurseries, hidden behind tall hedges. But, it started life 40 years ago, and in that time has become a one-stop plant shop for Garden Centres around Britain, with a reputation second-to-none. Wholesaling has continued with customers as far afield as Cornwall, Kent and even Scotland. The ethos of the business has always remained the same – to supply quality plants at reasonable prices, and maintain a high level of integrity and honesty to their customers. Now that two of the original partners have retired, Welland Vale is moving forward and diversifying again and moving into a new and exciting era. A trade Cash & Carry has been established to supply landscapers with a wide range of quality plants. They can bring their clients to the site to discuss plans and view our plant range. This service is now being extended to other trade customers, builders, schools, stately homes to name just a few. And more recently, they have developed a now burgeoning website selling hedging plants, supplying customers with quality products all over the UK Opening of Garden Inspirations In 2014, as Welland Vale celebrates its 40th year, it is launching its most ambitious project yet – a retail plant centre called ‘Garden Inspirations’. This will focus on a wide range of plants and core elements of gardening. If you’re looking for a garden centre selling everything from clothes to jewellery to furniture, that isn’t what it’s about. But, if you wish to explore an inspirational range of well-cared for plants with frequently changing fresh ideas, large specimen plants from topiary to trees for instant impact, sundries and pots, a little bit different from the run-ofthe-mill, then you should definitely pay a visit. Welland Vale’s passion is plants. They aim to offer sound advice that 40 years experience brings, all in a friendly relaxed environment. Strong links with local landscapers, designers and specialists offer a wide list of contacts. You will be served by knowledgeable staff, and will be confident in knowing that the plants that you are purchasing have come from Welland Vale’s own nursery and from a tried, tested and trusted chain of suppliers. They also stock items a little out of the ordinary traditional Italian terracotta and Cretan terracotta and more contemporary designs, a range of tools, sundries, chemicals, fertilizers, wild bird food and tables, house plants and cacti along with a range of pots for indoor use, aggregates & composts and much more. Every year we will look for something in all businesses that we can point out that might help people move forward or save money or become more efficient. “I am a fan of looking at things differently, but not following every whim of accounting whim of fashion, rather plotting a long-term course which is both innovative and robust. Mike Goldmark Pottery Bringing great art within everyone’s reach
T
he Goldmark Gallery has long been famous for its prints, lithographs and paintings, operating on a national and international stage as well as serving the local market. But its foray into pottery is much newer, dating back to 2005. Incredibly in that short space of time, Goldmark is already one of the leaders in the field of craft pottery, having staged 23 exhibitions to date, raising the profile of British and international craft pottery massively. This new-found fame was well illustrated last year when a gentleman arrived in the shop one summer’s day, dressed in heavy cape and hat, with a mysterious air yet a welcoming thick Australian accent, who turned out (as one does) to be an Abbot in a Russian Orthodox monastery in Melbourne and also an enthusiastic amateur potter. “I just wanted to thank you,” he said, “for helping raise the profile of craft pottery across the world; you are doing a great job.” Raising the profile of craft pottery Mike Goldmark and his team have worked hard at raising each potter’s profile. Every exhibition is the subject of a glorious catalogue and supporting feature film, all masterminded by Mike’s son Jay, who taught himself photography and was recently approached by ANC Black publishers to do the photography for a book on craft potters, testament to his exceptional skills. The film that Jay made of Anne Mette Hjortshøj’s work, for example, a Danish potter,
was incredibly evocative, showing her at home on the tiny island of Bonholm off the coast of Denmark, sourcing clay from the cliff faces of the island and turning her pots in a converted cowshed. The film launched on to the internet, went viral and was watched with interest by the Queen of Denmark. She then paid a state visit to the island, which was covered by Danish news. That in turn went onto the internet and was widely viewed in the USA. Hence the Gallery has now begun to receive orders for her pots from the States. Reaching out to a new generation of enthusiasts Collectors from far and wide descend on Uppingham to drool over the exhibitions and permanent displays. But still Mike is not completely satisfied. He wants a broader public to appreciate and enjoy the wonders of craft pottery. “For as little as a £100,” he opines “you can drink form the work of a great artist, clasp it in your hands; it can become a part of your home and your life. No more that a meal out for two, but it will last for many, many years, not just one night.” “Young people spend their lives in the virtual world, and then stop to use machine-made products. Pots/domestic ware are things that everyone shares the need for – a bowl, a mouth, a tradition that has existed for thousands of years – and a process that is so basic – earth, water, air and fire brought together in a creative surge to create a pot.
“Why not have your favourite drink – a coffee, a hot chocolate with a dash of brandy, an herbal tea - out of a piece of art?! What could be more warming and satisfying as you clasp the mug in your hands?” The new pottery shop To reach this wider public and to get works of art into the hands of a new generation, Mike has recently launched a dedicated pottery shop next to the Gallery, showcasing the work of several major craft potters on a permanent basis – the other worldly delicate Nordic-ness of Anne Mette Hjortshøj’s pots, the warmth and character of Jean-Nicolas Gerard’s work, the breathtaking delicacy of Takeshi Yasuda’s creations to the rich robustness of Ken Matsuzaki’s art… to name but a few. Basically there is something to everyone’s taste, and the opportunity is there to start to collect pottery for your home to delight and to use at the same time. Take it, it will enhance your world! The shop is managed by Vicki Uttley, who grew up in a home full of home-made pots and so feels very at home in the gallery. She will help you to learn more about each artist. And it is open the same hours as the Gallery. • Goldmark Gallery, 14 Orange St, Uppingham, Rutland, LE15 9SQ, UK Opening Times Mon-Sat 9.30am-5.30pm, Sun 11.00am-4.00pm Tel: 01572 821424 www.goldmarkart.com STAMFORD LIVING MARCH 2014

Stamford Sack Store
Antonia Scott caught up with Chris and Emma Isaac, owners of The Sack Store who are making significant changes to their latest Stamford project The Sack Store in Boston has been established for 20 years and is owned and run by Christopher Isaac and his team. They are delighted to have taken over the Stamford Garden Centre and are planning a raft of exciting improvements. They are already underway with tree planting and landscaping, including creating almost a hundred car parking spaces at the front of the site for better visitor access, with the plants moving to a covered display area at the rear. They plan to introduce a range of Sack Store products and heat the showrooms with Clearview stoves and in time, will use one of their successful Biomass boilers for additional heating and hot water to create a unique and stimulating retail environment for customers. They also hope to bring a range of outdoor clothing to the store so customers can sit on the beautiful English-made Harris Tweed chairs and try on wellie boots in front of a warming stove! The Butchery is to be refurbished and will hopefully re-open at the end of March and the Garden Store is stocking an improved range of local deli products. The Kitchen Garden continues to serve locally sourced, fresh food – from delicious soups to a two-course Daily Specials Menu, along with tea, coffee and homemade cakes. The Chef Manager, Michael Laing will continue the ever-popular ‘Fine Dining Evenings’ hosted by Sue Davies. The Garden Centre displays will be updated and the range of gardening products extended for the benefit of all the keen gardeners in Stamford and the surrounding area. Emma Cannings’ Beauty and Wellness Centre, Sew-Now for bespoke soft furnishings, Greensleeves Florist and Chalk Interiors featuring the Annie Sloan range of paints will continue to trade on site. • Contact info: www.sackstorestamford.co.uk. ’62 Love Me Do broadens menu
’62 love me do is a stylish ‘60s themed restaurant diner in Oundle, brought to you by Karen & Phil of Beans Coffee Stop, just across the road from Beans itself. Sitting inside what is arguably the best shop front in town, the interior of ‘62 is tastefully decorated to recreate a 1960s diner, with a red and black interior and a mix of red and black leatherette seats set off by a collection of 60s memorabilia. However, don’t be fooled by the ‘diner’ image, since last autumn the menu is much wider-ranging, including home-made steak pie, sausage and mash, gammon and egg, enchiladas, spaghetti bolognese and other pasta dishes. Their fresh salads also take a lot of beating too, as does the breakfast menu, offering pancakes with syrup New York-style as well as other choices including a ‘Full English’ as good as any top hotel offering! Apart from the incredibly tasty and great value dishes they offer, ’62 love me do also take great pride in their locally-sourced policy, with their burger and steak pie beef sourced from Seven Wells butchers just two doors away (from their farm a mile and a half away), and wines and beer from local suppliers Amps and Castor Ales. • 12 West St, Oundle, Peterborough PE8 4EF Tel: 01832 274383 www.62lovemedo.co.uk
Launde Farm Foods and the Marquess of Exeter
Originally a family business selling meat to their local family and friends, Launde Farm Foods converted their stables into a butchery so they could run their business all from the farm. Then three years ago Gwilym took the decision to set up on his own, with the continuing support of his wife, Alex and Mum, Pippa. Initially selling direct to households and then to trade also. Launde Farm Foods uses locally sourced beef, lamb, pork and poultry and not only supplies households and restaurants but also caters for a variety of parties from 40 to 200 people. Gwilym started supplying The Marquess of Exeter around two years ago and both Gwilym and Brian have the same ethos of being part of the local community and providing the best products available. Gwilym currently works with The Marquess on all their “stall” events (Oakham, Oundle & Burgley markets, plus Burghley Horse Trials) and will be working in partnership with Brian at The Deli Shed; he plans to be available every Friday morning to offer butchery. The ‘Deli Shed’ will be opening at the back of the Marquess in March, opening times the same as the pub. It will offer a wide range of foods, including vegetables, free range eggs, ready meals, meats, cheeses, preserves etc; or if a villager just needs a pint of milk, that will be possible too. • Marquess of Exeter, 52 Main St, Lyddington, Rutland LE15 9LT Tel: 01572 822477 www.marquessexeter.co.uk • laundefarmfoods@tiscali.co.ukTel: 01572 490428

H OM E & GAR DE N
A Restoration Drama The story of No. 45 High Street, Ketton, by Martin Smith
I
’m going to admit a guilty pleasure. I like watching those programmes on TV about Martin Smith restoring hopelessly decrepit houses. You know the ones, where the naïve owners are pushed to financial and emotional meltdown, goaded by a smug presenter who mercilessly exploits every disaster in what is now a familiar soap opera. Well, let’s say upfront, that our restoration drama doesn’t contain any of those edge of the seat cliff-hangers. If that’s your thing, then I’m sure there’s a repeat episode of Restoration Home now showing on More4 +1. Rather, it’s the story of taking an ugly duckling and slowly finding that a beautiful bird lies within. And it’s a journey that ends with us attending an awards ceremony at Oakham Castle and unexpectedly winning a prize, in the teeth of some much grander projects. For, let’s be clear, this is not a posh house. I first noticed it driving to work every day thinking ‘who would want to live there?’. It looked like a Victorian terrace, attached to a derelict house and former garage, on one of the most frustrating bits of Ketton for any flustered commuter. If you drive that way, you’ll know the bit. It’s where there’s always a row of parked cars and you have to give way to oncoming traffic because the road’s too narrow. The temptation is to try and squeeze through, and that’s when you hear the sound of horns and screeching tyres. The wing mirror of our car got knocked off shortly after we moved here… Anyway, as fate would have it, a few years later we were there in the house viewing it. I was reluctant at first, but had been persuaded to go along – it had 4 bedrooms and we needed the space for the kids. It was also at a price we could afford and it did look old, sort of - and as you might have guessed, I like old buildings. The first impressions were not
36
auspicious. A modernised interior - all very nice but not our kind of thing. There was a cellar, but it was full of rubbish, with a serious damp problem – more a wet room really. Then there were the nasty plastic windows and the revelation that you didn’t own most of the rear garden – it was earmarked for car parking for a new development of houses. Oh, and there were two planning enforcements in place, meaning you would need to apply for planning permission to use what was left of the garden! So that should have been that. But instead we went back for a second viewing. We started to notice historic features dotted about here and there. A bit of old stone wall, or a black-painted beam. Then we discovered that this ‘Victorian’ house was in fact a grade 2 listed Georgian house, built around 1780. There was a Collyweston slate roof and a fine ashlar façade, expertly crafted in creamy Ketton stone - only it was spoilt by those plastic windows. For many, the discovery it was listed would have been the final nail in the coffin. But, instead, we found ourselves putting in an offer, which was accepted. We took possession of the house in February 2012 and the first job was to pull up the carpets. We had been fantasising about having a nice chequered terracotta tile hallway and had been looking at tiles online. Imagine our surprise, when we peeled away layers and found an original set of just such tiles underneath the damp, rotting underlay. The ‘play room’ at the back revealed a lovely stone-flagged floor, now our dining room. Upstairs there were those nice really-wide Georgian floorboards, a bit knackered, but just waiting to be sanded and polished. Now began the serious work and the raiding of the savings pot. The

House (before)
cellar had suffered from years of rain water pouring down the coal hole from the pavement outside. The timbers supporting the main wall at the front were seriously damp, well, soaked would be more accurate. So we cleared out the muck, damp-proofed and tanked the stone walls and created a whole new subterranean room, now lit from a glass panel in the old coal hole. This is now the studio domain of our eldest teenage son and appears to function as a nightclub. Of course the windows had to go. It took over a year, but we managed to source a local firm, Traditional Timber Windows in Sleaford, to handmake and install some beautiful hardwood sash windows and doors. The windows use this new 4mm thin double-glazing which means they look like single pane sashes, but keep the road noise out, and the heat in. The ethos, as the work continued, was to create a historic interior – not some modern scheme in an old shell, but something with genuine atmosphere, like you’ve just stepped back in time. And we think that was one of the reasons that we were honoured when the Rutland Local History and Record Society chose our house for the 2013 Tony Traylen award. We weren’t the most prestigious project, but ours had a certain character. As one judge said during the tour, the house reminded her of Dennis Severs’ house in Folgate Street, London, a place where it appears that an 18th-century family have just popped out for some milk. So, what do our kids make of living in a time warp? Well our ten-year old daughter, when asked where she would like to live, said without hesitation, ‘Definitely in a modern house – one that’s bright and nice and clean’. Ah well, you can’t win them all! • The Tony Traylen and George Phillips Awards, organised by the Rutland Local History and Record Society in conjunction with Rutland County Council, were announced and presented at a ceremony at Oakham Castle on Thursday 30th January 2014. Kitchens – How to optimise light and space “Eat, drink & be merry!
Antonia Scott considers how to optimise your kitchen space to accommodate cooking and living in
W
hich is your favourite room in your house? Whilst answers vary according to individual tastes, there are some rooms that will always retain their importance and add value to any property - the kitchen being considered number one. Kitchens have evolved significantly in recent times becoming multi-purpose spaces where cooking and entertaining are merged into one living space. So, in terms of usage and adding value, the kitchen remains the heartbeat of most contemporary homes. How to optimise your kitchen space with lighting Thanks to advancements in LED technology, it is now possible to dramatically add to the appeal of your kitchen space with modern light fittings. The days of having just one or two sources of light in your kitchen are long gone, as the trend for individual multiple spotlights have taken over. They give you the benefit of more flexibility when it comes to controlling the level of lighting that you desire, and many have a remote sensor to customise brightness according to the mood that you are trying to achieve.
40
The application of spotlights has also enabled designers to create unusual angles when lighting their properties. The development of plinth lights are now very popular as they are small, compact and widely integrated into work surfaces and the base of wall units to cast soft and intimate rays of light. They can also run just above the cusp of the floor in your kitchen and offer an alternative and unique source of LED light. Historically, LED fittings were cumbersome and unattractive lighting options that delivered functionality but little style to home-owners. However, modern LED light fittings are significantly improved and available in a comprehensive range of contemporary designs and styles, though they have lost none of their functionality and remain excellent cost cutting products. How to optimise your kitchen design to counter space constraints Some homes are lucky enough to have large, airy kitchens while others have homeowners unable to open a cupboard and the dishwasher at the same time. Small kitchens may appear to be a design challenge, but they

can also be functional, stunning and efficient. Even with a limited budget and building restrictions, there are many options to create and transform your kitchen into something that meets your needs and vision. To create a small and efficient kitchen design, you need to concentrate on three major areas: storage, lighting and appliances. • Make use of the centre of your kitchen by creating a central island that is convenient from any spot in the kitchen and which also provides valuable storage space (wine rack perhaps?). If you don’t want something permanently installed in the centre of your kitchen, a rolling cart is the small kitchen’s best friend – simply wheel it out when you need some more counter space, ‘slide and hide’ when you don’t! • With a small galley kitchen design, line the cabinets and appliances on either side of the corridor to maximise space and storage. • Create the illusion of more space with under cabinet or under the counter lighting. • Install deeper counters that can accommodate more appliances and increase work space. • Buy Smaller Appliances - if you need to buy new appliances, ask yourself if your family really needs 31 cubic feet of refrigerator space. Purchasing compact appliances is an easy way to save space without giving up the conveniences that you need, and can actually help you to live more simply. A 24inch dishwasher will clean dishes just as well as a 36-inch model and take up much less space. Get Kitchen Creative For urbanites, apartment dwellers and smallhome owners, the heart of the home can become the bane of your existence when space is at a premium. But by maximising every inch of precious space, you and your kitchen will be able to work wonders together. If you don’t have many kitchen drawers to store your items in, consider storing them in baskets, hooks, and shelves on the wall which become ‘space saving titans!’ A shelf built into the usually-bare backsplash can hold cooking items that might otherwise take up room on shelves or counters. There’s plenty of vertical storage space to take advantage of, leaving conventional kitchen drawers and cupboards free to be optimised to prevent the free-for-all that can often happen inside! Installing kitchen cabinets with glass
doors can make your space appear larger and also has the added benefit of encouraging you to de-clutter inside, as guests can see the contents of your messy cupboards! Most modern households love the convenience of microwave cooking, but a traditional microwave takes up valuable counter space, so consider buying a combination microwave and hood and hang it on the wall above your stove which will give you easy access to the microwave without taking up extra counter space. Many homeowners like the visual grandeur of a doublesink in their kitchen, but installing a narrow, deeper basin will give you the same amount of sink space but take up less area and gives you more precious counter space. With a smaller sink, consider an articulated faucet which can bend out of the way to accommodate large pots and dishes, or even mount it on the wall to take up even less space. Another space saving tip is to get a large chopping board to fit over the sink or range to give you more space to prepare meals. The board can be stored in a cupboard or drawer when you are not using it so that it doesn’t get in the way. It sounds obvious but Kitchens surrounded with dark-coloured walls often look confined and minimise space, so by contrast, painting the walls with light colours can make the kitchen area appear larger than it actually is. You can also add brighter lighting to make the space look bigger. Small kitchens don’t have to be cramped or hard to navigate, by making some adjustments and organising your kitchen effectively to optimise the space available, you can create a functional and clutter-free kitchen. With a well designed and organised kitchen, life should be made easier for you by ensuring long-term simplicity. Stamford and the surrounding area are lucky to have several excellent Kitchen Design and Fitting experts at hand to help locals choose the right option for them.

Weight Loss Surgery at Fitzwilliam Hospital
Is your weight affecting your health? Have you tried all the diets available with no success? Fitzwilliam Hospital can offer a solution to obesity through surgical weight loss procedures. Procedures available are Gastric Banding, Gastric Bypass and Gastric Sleeve. All procedures can result in loss of around 60% of excess weight over time.

Weight Management The Fitzwilliam Hospital is one of Cambridgeshire’s leading private hospitals, with an excellent reputation for delivering high quality healthcare treatments and services
T
he Fitzwilliam has been offering bariatric programmes and weight loss procedures successfully for many years, and offers a range of surgical and non-surgical treatments backed up by a very thorough on-going programme. Background People become overweight because they are consuming more calories than they use up through exercise and everyday life. These extra calories are stored in our body as fat so they can be used up later - but people who consume more calories than they use up each day will gradually put on weight. As our lifestyles have become less active and fewer people do physically demanding jobs, being overweight has become more common. Many overweight people will find it difficult to exercise or even to move around normally - which will further reduce the amount of calories they use up. And many people with weight problems find it difficult to control their appetite - the normal mechanisms which will tell them they are ‘full’ after a meal may malfunction and they may continue to eat. In the long term, increased weight can damage your health contributing to everything from infertility to type II diabetes. It can also affect people’s self-confidence and self-esteem. Many people are advised to lose weight by their GP but find this difficult, even if they diet or try to exercise more. If they become seriously overweight then, over time, this will increase the risk that they suffer from diseases linked to weight. Weight Loss Surgery Weight loss surgery can help many people but it is not recommended for every one. It is a lifelong - and often life-changing - decision and is not designed for people who are just a few pounds overweight or who want to look better for
their summer holiday! Your GP may recommend you try to adjust your diet and exercise and possibly try a drug which can help with weight loss. Weight loss surgery helps you to lose weight by either cutting your intake of food or preventing some of what you eat being absorbed. It is normally used in patients who are significantly overweight (with a body mass index (BMI) of 40 kg/m2 or over) and who have tried other methods to lose weight without enough success. Mr Tsang, a Peterboroughbased consultant with a specialist interest in this area, says: “Weight loss surgery should be looked at as a last resort; and to be effective, it still needs to be combined with an effective weight loss programme.” There are four main procedures offered at the Fitzwilliam: Laparoscopic adjustable gastric banding In this procedure a constricting ring is placed around the stomach and may be secured with stitches. This slows the passage of food through the upper part of the stomach and can create a sensation of fullness, even if only a small amount of food has been eaten. This type of procedure is known as restrictive because it reduces the amount of food you eat, thereby decreasing calorie intake. Gastric banding using keyhole surgery techniques (laparoscopic) and is a less invasive procedure than some other weight loss surgery. It results in on average 40% of excess weight lost. Sleeve Gastrectomy This is a more radical restrictive technique and involves removing part of the stomach. A sleeve-shaped portion of the stomach is left which reduces the patient’s capacity to eat food. But the part removed also contains cells which secrete a hormone which is thought to produce a feeling of hunger - so removal may also make you feel less hungry. Obviously, this procedure can’t be reversed and your surgeon will consider very carefully whether you are suitable for it and how much stomach to remove. A sleeve gastronomy will sharply reduce your calorie intake - you can eat normally but will want much smaller portions - and can lead to on average 5060% of excess weight lost. Gastric bypass This procedure involves food bypassing parts of your intestine which means that less is absorbed from it - thereby reducing
calorie intake. In addition, the size of the stomach is reduced creating a full feeling. So your food intake is both restricted and the amount of calories you can extract from it is reduced because it is not passing through the entire length of your intestine. This means that a bypass can be a very effective way to lose weight. This results in on average 7585% of excess weight lost, because it reduces the amount you can absorb as well as being restrictive. Mr Tsang commented: “It also tends to have an almost immediate influence on hormone, sugar and diabetes, for reasons we don’t yet full understand, which are potentially very beneficial.” Gastric balloon - a non-surgical approach Some patients may not want to undergo surgery - but still want something to help them to lose weight. A gastric balloon, usually inserted into the stomach for six months, can be used to ‘kick start’ weight loss while you also change your lifestyle and eating habits. This procedure involves inserting a deflated balloon into your stomach and filling it with saline. This creates a feeling of fullness and helps you to eat less. The procedure only takes 15 minutes and you don’t need an anaesthetic, just a mild sedative. This will not result in the same weight loss as the other procedures, but may be the preferred prelude to one of the above procedures which will then have a greater chance of a positive outcome. Getting started at the Fitzwilliam Just call to make an appointment or get a referral via your GP. Initially you will speak with the specialist bariatric nurse, to review your medical history and start to consider options. The full assessment process will then be conducted by a multi-disciplinary team that includes a surgeon, bariatric nurse, dietician and anaesthetist. The Fitzwilliam has three consultants with specialist skills in bariatrics: Mr Alfred Choy MA MB BChir FRCS Mr Andrew Tsang MBBS, BSc, MRCS (Eng), MD, FRCS (Gen Surg) Mr Farrukh Bajwa MB BS • A useful source of further information is BOSPA (British Obesity Surgery Patients Association) http://bospa.waxwing.co.uk • Fitzwilliam Hospital, Milton Way, South Bretton, Peterborough, PE3 9AQ Tel: 01733 842304 www.fitzwilliamhospital.co.uk

THE BACK
Y back street boys have nothing to do with the 1990s American close harmony boy band famed for its sentimental lyrics delivered to a misty-lensed camera. In my opinion, their performances were as sickly as a box of Turkish delight, which, according to Tiggy, my border terrier, is pretty damn sickly (we didn’t witness the wholesale scoffing of granddad’s Christmas present, but strong evidence was provided when a ghostlike dog wandered into the dining room covered in icing sugar. Following the crime, she retired to her basket for the rest of the day, looking sick as a dog).
Stamford’s Independent Garages No, I refer to the honourable group of unsung heroes who keep the wheels of Stamford turning – the owners and mechanics of Stamford’s independent garages. Unlike their glitzy distant relations, the main dealerships, these guys (apologies to any female mechanics out there, sadly haven’t found one yet) are found in the back streets of town. You won’t find a customer coffee machine or a comfy chair with adjacent coffee table displaying glossy car brochures here. You will find a bunch of hard working, greasy-overalled, professionals who relish the challenge of keeping your vehicle on the road. As someone who used to drive the type of car that simply required hooking up to a computerised stethoscope at the main dealers, I am in awe of these old school mechanics. Initially, you may encounter the old ‘sucking the breath through the teeth whilst shaking their head routine’ but their professional curiosity invariably gets the better of them and they set about diagnosing the problem with the dogged determination akin to that used by the crackers of The Enigma Code. They will miraculously conjure up long forgotten parts from goodness knows where, or if necessary, make some kind of thingamajig that will do the job just as well. They practice mechanics with a generous share of wizardry thrown in.
Project One
The Bongo lifestyle choice I stumbled on this rare breed of folk last summer after a number of circumstances forced me to change my car. Firstly, I was recovering from a back operation and found that getting in and out of my saloon car was very uncomfortable. Secondly, funds were rather low and a summer holiday seemed

unlikely and thirdly, whilst engaged in an insomniac’s eBay session I found a cracking deal. These factors resulted in me becoming the proud owner of an 18- year- old Japanese import camper van, a Mazda Bongo! I have never bought a vehicle in this way before and was rather apprehensive so took the precaution of sending a mechanic out to view it before I committed to buy (I’m not a complete sucker). He was happy that it was a genuinely great buy so I went to pick it up from the owners, a lovely couple who were obviously sad to see the Bongo go. They recounted tales of travelling through the Alps and camping in remote places. As they waved a moist-eyed, emotional goodbye, it felt more like I was adopting the vehicle than buying it. So much so, that the Bongo sent his birth parents a Christmas card. My daughter and I have become very fond of Bongo. We enjoy being part of the small, carefree, network of bongo owners who exchange waves and horn toots as we pass each other on the open road. We eagerly check out the online ‘Bongo forum’ in, I admit, a slightly nerdy way - who knew that you had to take the passenger seat out to change the oil filter or that the noise that sounds like you’ve stepped on a mouse means that the coolant alarm is working! To sum up, we are lovin’ the bongo life. I have an excellent driving position for my now mended back, a fridge to keep the beers cold, a two ring hob - perfect for a holiday fry, a memory foam mattress, and an excellent sound system. Best of all, we have made trips to the Wye Valley, Cornwall, Dorset, Norfolk and Suffolk and are planning a post GCSE European adventure this summer. Just watch our Bongo go! PE R SPE CT IVE S “I would as live as a Brownist as a politician” – Twelfth Night, Shakespeare
WHO WAS ROBERT BROWNE? Antonia Scott was invited into Lilford Hall, Browne’s family estate in Northamptonshire, to discover the fascinating past of Robert Browne and his connection to Stamford and The United States of America
A
s a life-long non conformist preacher, Robert Browne was certainly infamous in his day – he married twice, fathered nine children, contracted the plague and was jailed an incredible 32 times throughout his life time (1550-1633), but little else is widely known of the former Headmaster of Stamford School (1588-1591). ‘Colourful’, a ‘firebrand’ and ‘rebel’ – all words used to describe Robert Browne during his years as a preacher. Born into the wealthy and prominent Brownes (Elmes) of Lilford family at Tolethorpe Hall in 1550, he was related to the famous William Browne of Stamford who founded Browne’s hospital in 1493, whose family crest “The Spede Bird” appears on the Stamford Endowed Schools crest. He was also fortuitously well-connected to another family member, the hugely influential William Cecil, Lord Burghley, who later became Treasurer to Queen Elizabeth and was a sympathiser to his cause; ultimately saving him from more lengthy jail terms for his non-conformist views.
What did he believe? Robert Browne was highly influenced by Thomas Cartwright, his Professor whilst studying at Cambridge University’s Corpus Christi College, who advocated a new spirit for reform. On leaving Cambridge, Browne preached in Islington, London where he became ever more of a dissident as he felt the Church of England was in a state of moral decline and he was vocal in his anti-papist views. Rather than reforming the Church from within, he sought out a new ‘true church’ ethic which advocated religious separation from the Church of England and was the first to set up a Separatist Church where each congregation independently and autonomously runs its own affairs. He was a passionate orator with a loyal following called ‘Brownists’ who praised his strong beliefs and were even prepared to be incarcerated alongside him for outwardly defying the Church of England.
Robert Browne’s Time at Stamford School Browne travelled from London to Norwich and over to Holland preaching his outspoken beliefs with a loyal congregation following him. He published two books in 1582: ‘A Booke which Shewth the Life and Manners of all true Christians’ and his major work, ‘Treatise of Reformation’ which were soon banned by the English authorities. By the following year, a proclamation was issued against the buying, selling or possession of Robert Brown’s works. By 1588, after periods in jail and excommunication, his relation William Cecil, Lord Burghley finally sought him a Headship at Stamford School, in the hopes of bringing some calm to his life. It is there that Robert Browne eventually seemed to conform to the rules and statutes of the Church of England and even recanted some of his previous beliefs and writings. Parts of the original Stamford School Chapel where Browne taught for the three years he was recorded as Headmaster, still stand today and are filled with pupils on a daily basis.
50
Lilford Estate and Robert Browne’s connection to America Charles Micklewright is the current owner of the impressive Lilford Hall, a private residence not yet open to the public, which he bought over 10 years ago and has been researching its history ever since. He kindly invited me for tea in the Library – a scene that wouldn’t look out of place in Cluedo! Although the main house was built circa 1634, parts of the building date back to 1480 and are still surrounded on three sides by water as was originally intended. Charles explained Robert Browne’s family connection to the estate and how he discovered how influential he was during his lifetime, both here and in America. Charles has commissioned a film telling the history of Robert Browne, Lilford and his status as ‘The Father of the Pilgrims’ when the Mayflower set sail to Plymouth, Massachusetts. The Pilgrims story of seeking religious freedom has become a central theme of the history and culture of the United States and Charles would like to relay Lilford’s importance to them. Interestingly Lilford Hall reconnected with The United States when it was given over to the American Airforce during the Second World War to become the 303rd station hospital with 1,500 beds helping over 8,000 men and women who served in the 303rd Bomb Group. Charles regaled me with tales of carved heart ‘graffiti’ he has discovered on trees around the Estate from war time romances – similar to the fictional dramatisation, Downton Abbey! During this time, apparently Clark Gable enjoyed a ‘vacation’ in Lilford Hall, surrounded by the numerous nurses stationed there!

Why is Robert Browne remembered? Robert Browne devoted his life to his ideology of separating the Church from the State to create a better world for the common man. He inspired a movement which ultimately led to 102 men, women and children fleeing persecution during the reign of James I by boarding The Mayflower in 1620 and crossing the Atlantic to America to found the Plymouth Colony; where in turn many other English dissidents followed suit. Browne has since been referred to as the ‘Father of the Pilgrims’ (or Congregationalism) which stands at the heart of American Protestant tradition and the ideology of an individual’s right to be responsible for his own religious position is part of Brown’s legacy. A rebel to the end, he lived until 1633 when at 83 years old, he was arrested for hitting a Constable of the Lilford Estate over the payment of rates. He was sent (again!) to Northampton jail where he became ill and died and is buried in the graveyard of St Giles’ Church in Northampton. His light may have shone only briefly, but he certainly lit the path for others to follow.
Antonia Scott met up with Will Phelan, current Headmaster of Stamford School, to find out his views of Robert Browne as one of his predecessors
Q
As the current Headmaster with a degree in History, what do you think made Robert Browne so extraordinary? It was a pretty sticky time to be a religious fanatic. Elizabeth I was trying to maintain the status quo and not let the country become too radically Protestant, men like Browne were deliberately trying to push for a more radical religion. He was clearly a man of stalwart views and a clear sense of direction. 32 arrests did not change his mind. That courage and conviction makes him special and what was clear is that his ideas and the way he put them clearly resonated with his followers. So much so that they decided to leave England and embark on a treacherous journey to an unknown and dangerous destination to America. Imagine how much you must believe and have faith in an ideal to undertake such a journey in the 17th Century. The man clearly had something which motivated these people. I wish I could bottle it! The Stamford School Chapel where Robert Browne preached from.
Q
Are there any remaining artefacts from Robert Browne’s time as Headmaster of Stamford School? Not really, the only information we have on Browne at School is contained in Basil Deed’s book, who was Headmaster here in the mid 20th Century. The great legacy of his family is of course the stork on the woolsack which was the symbol of William Browne, his father and also strongly linked with Browne’s Hospital in town. We do have the senior boarding house, Browne House named after the family. No artefacts remain, sadly, however I understand that new things are being discovered at Lilford Hall all the time, which is exciting. Right: Side view of Lilford estate land – still surrounded on three sides by water....
The Robert Browne Foundation The Robert Browne Foundation is an American charity set up to create a lasting memorial to a man whose impact on American history is not only momentous, but still largely unknown. It sets out to remember America’s forgotten history and put Lilford Estate at the forefront of where Robert Browne’s teachings began. The Lilford Estate aims to open up part of Robert Browne’s ancestral home, so visitors can learn about this long forgotten heritage. The programme includes the opening of a museum, a 70 acre woodland trail leading to the remains of Browne’s Church, along with a picnic site on Browne’s Island where visitors can view Lilford Hall and the park. The film is called “Robert Browne - The Rebel Who Inspired a Nation” and will be aired in America over the summer. • For more information: www.robertbrownefoundation.org
Q
What values or legacy has Robert Browne left on Stamford School since 1591? I am not sure he was here long enough to imbibe a legacy. I would like to think that Stamford School calmed him down! Certainly he was not arrested again until he was in his 80s. Maybe the boys gave him the run around and brought him back to the practicalities of life!
Q
Does Stamford School have any links with American descendants of the original Brownist followers that went over on the Mayflower? Not that we know of, but through the project we are part of an up and coming link to work with pupils from the original Founding Fathers’ states to combine in a cross Atlantic project. Be Se’Juiced by Juicing Sarah Lyon reboots her health and well-being with the liquid fuel of good roots and fruits
ecently, I was blown away at how youthful a 50-something friend looked. She put this good look down to the kale she was juicing and drinking every day. The case for juicing was impressive and quite noticeably effective. This impression simmered away in the background of my mind for far too long before I recently began to juice. Initially, I procrastinated over which juicer to buy until another friend introduced me to Jason Vale, the Juice Master. Jason Vale advocates using the Philips juicer (HR1861 Whole Fruit Juicer) which is perfectly great to get started. Adding to this, the most important aspect of the juicing was the provenance of the fruit and vegetables used. I decided that produce would have to be an organic/biodynamic mix. So what was needed? I decided that a regular commitment to the Farmers’ Market to either Woodlands Farm’s stand or ordering one of their weekly vegetable boxes was essential.

Let the juicing begin Since embarking on my journey to juicing I have met others who are advocates and practitioners too. All of whom have some pretty convincing stories to share about how ‘the juice’ has changed their lives. I spoke to Julia at the Chirohealth Clinic, www.chirohealth.co.uk, in Scunthorpe, Lincolnshire. Julia and her colleagues hold health days at their clinic and although she told me she is no expert on juicing she can say that with a higher nutrient intake one can start to introduce fruit and vegetables into their diet in an appealing way. When the vegetable box arrives the idea for juicing can stimulate us all to think in a different way. Karl McGrory recently started juicing. Karl said: “I have been amazed by the way that after having a fresh organic juice in the morning my normal craving for endless cups of caffeine has dramatically reduced. I also find that starting the day with a drink that makes me feel so healthy sets the tone for the day and encourages me to eat more healthily. I have lost 8lbs in weight in two weeks since I started juicing. But the best bit is that the juice tastes absolutely amazing, better than anything you can purchase and it’s so quick and easy. The first recipe I tried got me hooked. Juicing two apples and a third of a lemon (Jason Vale) makes the most amazing sherbet lemonade flavour, it’s like a wicked treat but great for you.” Karl McGrory,
52
Woodlands Organic Farm – Vegetable Box Home Delivery A conversation with Theo gave more. “Juicing is such a fantastic solution to a busy life, when deadlines beckon. In a few minutes you can have a delicious nutritious ‘snack’, which avoids all the Junk Food traps. My favourite juice is: Carrots, apples, a beetroot, celery and a touch of ginger. This tastes amazing, is a gorgeous colour, and gives your kidneys and liver a welcome ‘rinse’. It certainly makes me feel fresher.” Lesley Harris at Natures Dispensary Ltd in Oakham advocates juicing alongside everything else you do. For Lesley, who is not keen on eating fruit, juicing offers an instantaneous way of mixing up vegetables and fruits. Lesley says, “You want to avoid the sugar rush, so juicing with vegetables is important.” Juicing really is a way of supplementing a compromised immune system and for Lesley juicing presents an easy way of adding other helpful and nutrient rich products like Spirulina and Chlorella. I had the impression that Lesley would be a good guide towards achieving optimum health. Lesley
Harris, Bsc (Hons) M.N.I.M.H, Medical Herbalist, Aromatherapist – 7 Mill Street, Oakham www. natures-dispensary.com. Based in Barnack, Lisa Armitage is known locally for her fabulous natural skin care range (www.lisaarmitage.com). So it is no wonder that when she talks about juicing she is coming from a skincare perspective. Although not strictly juicing, for dry skin she advocates a banana, almond milk, avocado smoothie with spirulina (anti-aging, protein base, antioxidant, immune boosting). This bright green super food smoothie works as a breakfast drink for kids too and can be made in a blender. If you are worried about skin breakouts then juicing will help tone this down – rich in minerals, vitamins, enzymes. Lisa suggests a cleansing juice to help: celery, apple, lemon and kale with a touch of ginger. Lisa posts regular healthy recipes, beauty, nutrition tips and more juicing recipes at www. facebook.com/greencleannutrition Lisa and I agree that life is busy and perhaps juicing sounds difficult in terms of finding the time and factoring it into your daily routine. For me, with an already battered immune system I am convinced that making the time to juice and budgeting for it is a key and essential ingredient to enriching life. • Purchase a juicer from Steamer Trading Cook Shop, 7 High Street, Stamford – Magimix, Le Duo Plus XL Juicer £179.95 or Cuisinart Juice extractor £99.99 Harrison and Dunn, Stamford – Order the Philips HR1861 Whole Fruit Juicer

Welland School of Dancing celebrates 50 years The dance school has long been at the heart of Stamford, both in its location and the role it plays in the lives of local residents. Alysia Anderson, herself an adult student and parent of two young dancers, looks at the WSD past and present
I
n the early summer of 1964, Susan Mitchell-Smith, who was teaching dance at Stamford High School and in Easton-on-the-Hill, set up the Welland School of Dancing. The first classes, one for pre-schoolers and a ballet class for the over-fives, were held at the YMCA on St Peter’s Hill. “Our first dance display was on 17 July 1965 at the Darby and Joan Hall on North Street,” said Susan, who has kept Stamford Mercury newspaper cuttings from those early years showing smiling students captured on camera. The school continued to put on regular displays and, alongside children’s classes in ballet, modern and tap, Susan Mitchell-Smith offered adult lessons in ballroom dancing, tap and ballet. Performances were always in aid of a charity, often the Sunshine Home for Blind Babies and Young Children, and took place at various venues such as the Congregational Hall in Broad Street, Casterton Village College, Stamford Theatre and the Key Theatre in Peterborough. The WSD also took part in smaller displays for church fêtes and Stamford Hospital and in 1970 gave an open afternoon at Stamford College for the first Stamford Arts Festival. Susan Mitchell-Smith was sometimes asked to do the choreography for other amateur productions. On occasion, the ballet students enjoyed exciting opportunities to dance with touring professional companies, for example, as dolls in Coppelia with the Alexander Roy London Ballet Theatre. DANCING TO SUCCESS In 1971 Susan bought 2 St Mary’s Passage. Much thought went into the WSD logo, inspired by a photo of prima ballerina Svetlana Beriosova who danced with the Royal Ballet for more than 20 years. At the school’s height there were over a thousand pupils, with classes in Stamford, Bourne, Easton-on-theHill, Peterborough, Bretton, Billingborough, Uppingham and Oakham. The first RAD Ballet exams took place in 1966 and were always reported in the Mercury. ISTD Modern and Tap exams were also taken as were Cecchetti Ballet and Ballroom exams at Stamford High School. Several students went on to train at professional schools but often came back to join the school’s displays. Over the years many pupils have made successful careers in theatre, both behind the scenes and treading the boards. Students have performed with the Royal Ballet Company at Covent Garden, danced in the ballroom scene of the feature film Mansfield Park and appeared in West End shows such as Billy Elliot and Phantom of the Opera. Recently, several senior students successfully auditioned and performed with the London Children’s Ballet and English Youth Ballet. Two former pupils went on to create their own dance companies.

discovered that really all they wanted to do was dress up in costumes and be in a show! So that became the format.” Maggie Purr then introduced a Senior Summer School for the more experienced students. Currently, she is working hard on the 50th anniversary Corn Exchange production, written and directed by her. Maggie explained: “The shows include all pupils from Grade One Ballet upwards and have a theme about life in and around Stamford. The WSD is a great supporter of the Stamford Exchange theatre project and has invested over £6,000 in the refurbishment programme. Our 50th anniversary show, from 13-15 March, is called Stamwood Through Time. We’d like to invite everybody to come and watch; not just members and parents of the school, to celebrate WSD being part of Stamford life for the last half century. We’ve had generations of Stamfordians pass through WSD and we’d like to invite former pupils to come and help us celebrate too.” The show tells the story of a time-travelling Doctor who recruits prima ballerina Emma to help him reteach the lost art of dance to future humankind. Naughty fairies sabotage the Doctor’s time-travelling washing machine and send him back in time on an adventure that incorporates the history of the Welland School of Dancing. “It’s a family-friendly show for anyone who loves dance, showcasing over 400 of the School’s pupils,” said Maggie. • Tickets are £10 or £7.50 for concessions, available online or from the Corn Exchange Box Office (01780 766544; www.stamfordcorn-exchange.co.uk” www.stamford-corn-exchange.co.uk). DOWN MEMORY LANE Anne reminisced: “There are so many highlights from the last 50 years; the Stamford Millennium show in a huge marquee on the Meadows; dancing Peter and the Wolf with the Stamford Chamber Orchestra; performing at Belvoir Castle; Maypole dancing in 1790 costumes made by David for the Pride and Prejudice film company’s celebration; collaborating with local musician Jonathan Sismey to create the ballet The Elves and the Shoemaker. “ Anne spoke of the Christmas shows that the school took on tour to local hospitals, Stamford town hall and STAMFORD LIVING MARCH 2014

You don’t have to wait till March 30 to take mum out for a treat. Nothing says thanks like food in fine surroundings

lowers are very nice but to make mum feel really special this year – and you don’t have to wait till Mothering Sunday – you could organise a truly memorable food experience. There is a huge variety of special things you can do locally. The ideas in this feature could be used to make any day special...
Afternoon tea at Stapleford Park CONTACT: Stapleford Park Country House, Stapleford, Leics LE14 2EF, www.staplefordpark.com 01572 787000 Set in 500 acres of landscaped grounds and exuding country luxury like a pair of velvet-lined Hunter wellies, Stapleford Park is the perfect place for a spot of high tea. Or maybe sherry with cucumber sandwiches. Sink into the comfortably sofas, place your Earl Grey and scones on the antique table, and inhale the refined 17th century atmosphere.
Champagne at Kilworth House Hotel CONTACT: Kilworth House Hotel, Lutterworth Rd, North Kilworth, Leics LE17 6JE, 01858 880058, www.kilworthhouse.co.uk Victorian opulence and a hint of theatrical flair are in the air at Kilworth House Hotel. The snore-inducing comfort of the public rooms – where you can relax with your fizz – contrasts with invigorating light that constantly floods the starched white tablecloths and ornate tiled floor of the Orangery. Theatre and opera regularly take place at Kilworth but even if there isn’t a show on it’s worth taking mum to literally and metaphorically drink in the luxurious surroundings.

Evening dining on the Great Central Railway CONTACT: Great Central Station, Great Central Road, Loughborough, Leicestershire LE11 1RW, 01509 230726, www.gcrailway.co.uk There’s something pleasingly old fashioned, romantic and ever so slightly decadent about drinking wine on a steam train as it hurtles through rural landscape. Eating a six-course evening meal between sips, while admiring the view across Charnwood Forest from your first-class dining carriage is even better. The Loughborough-to-Leicester Great Central Railway, Britain’s only mainline steam railway, has been voted 12th in the 50 greatest train journeys of the world. It offers a dining service every weekend and on some weekday evenings. If mum loves Indian food, it’s worth taking a ride on the Maharaja Express, where the dining service teams up with Salim’s Indian restaurant of Loughborough.
ake a sprinkling of local knowledge. Add a pinch of imagination. Combine with flair to create an array of mouthwatering food itineraries. No matter where in the region you live, you won’t have to travel far to enjoy a mélange of gourmet activities. STAMFORD FOOD EXTRAVAGANZA A day out in one of England’s finest stone towns is laden with great-tasting possibilities. After browsing the numerous boutiques (St Mary’s Street is a good place to start), refresh with excellent coffee at Fine Food Store before visiting impressively ancient and comfortable hotel, The George. New restaurant The Mad Turk on St Paul’s Street should be on your agenda, as should fabulous old pub the Tobie Norris, where you can grab excellent pizza.
the Nevill Arms (a café within a pub) in the pretty village of Medbourne, just a few miles from Market Harborough? If the sun’s shining, the brook at the front of the pub underlines a beautiful scene. After breakfast, you should certainly pay a visit to Farndon Fields, one of the region’s very best farm shops. Finally, and this is for mums who love Italian food, visit the excellent Just So Italian deli on Bath St. BELVOIR BITES If you want to eat out or just grab a drink in the Vale of Belvoir, try the Red Lion Inn, Stathern, The Wheel at Branston or the Chequers, Woolsthorpe-by-Belvoir. If you’re more interested in coffee and local ingredients to take away, head to The Good Grub Company in Eastwell village (be sure to grab some Colwick cheese, which was featured recently on Jamie Oliver’s show). Further afield, Langar Hall is excellent.

Cakes in the Orangery at Burghley House CONTACT: The Orangery Restaurant, Burghley House, Stamford, Lincs PE9 3JY, 01780 761989, www.burghley.co.uk Burghley House on the edge of Stamford is one of the most stunning Elizabethan country houses in Britain. Its architectural impact and grounds are second to none. Burghley’s bright and airy Orangery café/restaurant (pictured below), designed by Capability Brown, is under the management of Absolute Taste, who have introduced a welcome policy of cooking with local produce, including Grasmere Farm sausages, Colston Bassett Stilton and local Longhorn beef.
t’s said Melton Mowbray used to be the equivalent of Monaco during the height of the fox-hunting trend in the 19th century. Even the most passionate Meltonian would hesitate to make that claim today, but it is Britain’s rural food capital. And to give mum a true taste of rural food, set a Tuesday aside to experience the timewarp farmers’ market, where sheep, ferrets, geese and a variety of local produce are traded weekly. At the market you can visit the Melton Cheeseboard’s stand or wander to their shop in town to pick up some amazing cheeses, each marked with a label showing how many food miles it’s travelled. Next, venture to Ye Olde Pork Pie Shoppe on the High Street to stock up on awardwinning pork pies. After all that you need to relax. The King’s Arms in Scalford village just a couple of miles out of town is a lovely pub for a bite to eat or, in Melton Mowbray itself, The Anne Of Cleves is a nice, historic pub that serves decent food.
City cuisine
I
f mum’s a city girl at heart, a shopping spree at Leicester’s Highcross might go down well. But after that you should take her for a cocktail at award-winning Hotel Maiyango in St Nicholas’ Place (double gold in the East Midlands Tourism awards). Try one of their sublime cocktails. Another good urban option is new Leicester restaurant The White Peacock on New Walk.
Rutland refreshment
R
utland’s county motto roughly translates as “a lot in a small space”, and that’s certainly true of the disproportionate number of high-quality eateries. To give mother dear a true taste of Rutland, try the King’s Arms, Wing, where local ingredients are used religiously in imaginative ways. Or for a truly special meal, visit Michelin-starred Hambleton Hall or Good Pub Guide Pub of the Year, The Olive Branch, Clipsham. Gardeners could head to Barnsdale Gardens before eating at neighbouring Barnsdale Lodge. STAMFORD LIVING MARCH 2014

UPD ATES
Private General Practitioner joins the Broad St Practice Dr Nigel Hume has recently joined the Broad Street Practice, offering private medical appointments of up to an hour. Nigel is well known in the town, having originally joined the St Mary’s Practice in 1990. He currently works as a GP at the NHS Wansford Practice, where he is also involved in training and research. Whilst passionate about this role, he feels that there is also a place for a private GP service that can do things slightly differently. He told us: “There are patients who are often keen to get a longer appointment with a doctor so that the session can devote more time to looking at what the causes of a particular ailment are rather than just treating the symptoms. There are also people who would rather explore alternative ways of addressing a medical issue rather than resorting to tablets as a first step, and this is something I am a strong believer in. I prefer to look at other options first before considering medication.” “I prefer to listen, analyse and reflect with the patient and the emphasis of this premium private medical service is to provide a high quality consultation, where patients are given 45 minutes or 1 hour to describe and discuss their symptoms. Taking a good medical history is well recognised to contribute 80% to the diagnosis, and having time to fully elucidate a patient’s complaints will aid diagnostic accuracy. This will then be augmented by a clearly defined and comprehensive medical examination.” As well as mainstream medical issues, Nigel has a special interest in medicine in extreme conditions of altitude or cold – he has been on a medical course in the Arctic, and is also a keen mountaineer. So if you are thinking of taking on an extreme challenge, for example climbing a 4000m+ peak for the first time, then he would also be a good person to talk to in terms of how to cope with the altitude. • To book a consultation, call the Broad Street Practice on 01780 480889 or visit www.thebroadstreetpractice.co.uk
Antonia Scott enjoys Saturday Night Jack A former Stamford School pupil, Dylan Dronfield has just had his first novel published and is thrilled with the initial positive feedback and reviews. Saturday Night Jack is a crime thriller set in Newcastle where Dylan went to University, where he combined studying for a degree in English with working at the local newspaper, The Chronicle. It was during these student days that the first idea for his book came about, yet it took a further 14 years for Dylan to finish his debut novel and achieve his goal of finally seeing it in print. Saturday Night Jack centres around two main characters - local newspaper crime reporter, Mick Rogers and detective, Simon Sharpe leading the investigation into solving the murder of three young women, who all meet their end after being picked up from Newcastle nightclubs. Fast paced and well written with a definite nod to typical Tyneside humour and a noticeable North-East feeling, Saturday Night Jack gives the reader a front row seat in a murder inquiry and the ensuing media frenzy. Let’s just hope it doesn’t take Dylan another 14 years for book number two to be published! Dylan is now a Senior News Editor at Sky News and currently lives in London with his wife and their two young children. They hope

SPOTLIGHT ON BUDAPEST
S
tylish, attractive, relatively unspoilt and gateway to East Europe, Budapest is a hot destination at the moment. After centuries of destructive wars followed by dramatic rebuilds this city offers an eclectic collection of architectural styles ranging from Roman ruins to Turkish, neo-Gothic, Art Nouveau and Stalinist block house chic. The city’s restaurants and bars follow the eclectic party line too with quality offerings from goulash to sushi, premium lagers to exotic cocktails and giant café lattes for your wake-up call before hitting the sensational thermal baths. Public transport is efficient, easy and good value and the ambience is free. Budapest is a merger of two towns: Buda on the hilly, quietly regal west bank of the Danube River and busy Pest on the east. Buda: Budapest - unlike Prague - is big enough to absorb the tourist crowds except in Buda’s Castle District where the stunning views from Fisherman’s Bastion are the premier attraction and night-time floodlights turn the area into a Disney fantasy. Among other Buda offerings are walks on the old castle ramparts, the Royal Palace and its museums, 700 year old Matthias Church, the underground Labyrinth, the Citadella and the thermal baths in the superb Art Nouveau Gellert Hotel. Don’t miss Statue Park, a collection of monumental Soviet era mega-heroes set in stone. Pest is the place for shopping, bopping and neo-neo land, including the neo-Renaissance State Opera House and St Stephen’s Basilica, neo-Gothic Parliament and neo-Classical National Museum. Margaret Island is for culture day release, an oasis of trees, flowers, swimming pools, spa hotels and a theatre with musical evenings. Bicycles are available for rent. With a wide range of hotel options available to suit all budgets, it is the perfect short break destination. For something special try the 5* Boscolo Budapest - this hotel is truly spectacular and is one of Budapest’s

Graham Wright Graham Wright’s contemporary street scenes of Stamford are depicted on postcards and correspondence cards as well as limited edition prints. Sue Lee and Jean Orpin find out about the artist behind the pictures.
G
raham Wright is an architect by profession and has lived in Stamford since 1980 although his architectural career began elsewhere. Having trained from 1966-72, he first worked for Leics County Council then obtained a position with Peterborough Development Corporation. This was at the time when Peterborough was changing from being a market town into a major city and there were plenty of opportunities for architects with a new shopping centre, car parks and many other new buildings needed. During this time Graham and his family moved to Stamford and after a short time in Bedford he also worked in the town. Alongside his work Graham was always keen on art and had enjoyed painting as a hobby. He tried various mediums, like linocuts, in his earlier days before he settled on watercolours as his usual medium. In his working life Graham’s skills at drawing and watercolours were frequently called on for presentation work. In Stamford he did this for Jefferson Sheard in Scotgate Mews. All these things came together when he decided to use his architectural, drawing and painting skills to produce pictures of the streets in Stamford. With so many attractive streets in the town, this has proved very successful and Graham has also completed individual commissions for people who wanted a painting of their own house. Graham is fortunate in having a conservatory where the light is good and this is where most of his work is carried out. The streetscapes began as sketches before watercolour was added. Graham deliberately chose a 1:200 scale so the pictures could then be easily reproduced. Limited edition prints can be purchased at Gallery Stamford in Maiden Lane and some of the streetscapes are available as postcards and cards at Walker’s bookshop in the High Street. Graham can turn his hand to many things including designing the glazing for his own front door. Recently he has worked with his son Matt who started The Great Food Magazine in 2010 to celebrate and inform people about local food. He initially promoted his Good Food Club by issuing a bi-monthly magazine. The magazine cover was illustrated by Graham who enjoyed the variety of topics he was asked to paint. Matt then decided to promote his club on the web and discontinued the magazines but you can see Graham’s illustrations on the digital back issues on the Great Food Club web site (www. greatfoodclub.co.uk). Matt is a contributor to Stamford Living, writing articles on local food.

STA M FOR D PE OPLE
& Co: The Clockmakers Tale This month Harjit Gammon starts a new series of Stamford People focusing on the team behind the success of the enterprise. She begins with the team at Robert Loomes & Co.
W
illiam Paley, the 18th century philosopher, could have been referring to Robert Loomes clockmakers, when he used the famous watch analogy to propound his theory, “design qua purpose”, to explain the existence of the universe and man. In short, he argued that just as an ‘old-fashioned’ mechanical watch, with its tremendously complex movement of cogs, wheels and springs comes about with the agency of a clockmaker, so too the earth and universe must have come about with the agency of a designing creator - God. Whatever your philosophical stance, that Robert Loomes & Co are fast gaining a reputation as gods amongst British watchmakers is arguably less beyond dispute. Behind a tranquil and civilised facade of ‘oldfashioned’, luxurious gentility beats the tempo of an altogether more modern marriage of technology and craftsmanship. Stepping across the threshold, from the traffic of the Town Bridge, one is ushered into a hushed haven of cosseting, interspersed only by the ticking of a clock. A log fire burns in the grate, of the deeply carpeted room overlooking the River Welland, in an appropriately quirky, historic building dating to circa 1588. But step from the shop gallery into the workshop, as I was privileged to, and the ‘mechanics’ are unveiled; a community of master craftsmen at work. Variously clad in blue, brown or white coats and aprons, depending on their role within the firm, here are assembled the modern day workings of British clock and watch making; the engineers and the artists. The dramatic change in the work of the company in the four years since Robert moved the business to its present location from St Leonard’s Street is also apparent in the staff make up. “Our business has gone from 99% restoration work and 1% making to a more equitable split, four years and some 500 watches later,” says Robert. Long case clock restoration now rubs shoulders with manufacturing tiny, intricate wrist watch components for their own entirely British watches. There are also now, “Thirteen of us. Twice the number of people as at St Leonard’s Street.” Robert, nursing a broken wrist at the time of writing, computer designs the components for Gary, a former engineer with the Ministry of Defence, Thorn EMI radar systems and Formula One advisor, to make in the workshop. When a machine requiring a prohibitive half million pound
70
investment was needed, it was Gary’s happy task to build it. The machine is critical for repeatedly making the high precision parts for their uniquely all British watch. Astonishingly accurate, in layman’s terms, the machine is accurate to 1/1000th of a millimetre compared to the naked eye which can see to an accuracy of just 1/10th of a millimetre. The parts thus produced are assembled and hand polished by Craig and Andrew, the white coated watchmakers. Working under intensely focused light in crisp, clean, grease free conditions, the pair have sharp vision and astonishing hand eye co-ordination skills. I’m struck too by the odd asides peppering Robert’s commentary as we walk around amid the automatic watch winders, enamelling kilns, engraving machine and Robert’s own seventy-five year old lathe. The steel case for the wrist watches take eight hours to polish, to achieve the smooth, look of liquid metal on the wrist. The enamel dial is made using a process which costs £400 per hour. To qualify as a clockmaker can take as many as twelve years and a minimum of three years full-time study. On the staff luckily is Huw Matravers, an examiner for the British Horological Institute, and an authoritative arbiter of skill and knowledge. “We’re very proud to have Huw on the team,” says Robert. “He’s a huge asset to the business”. He was prised away from Devon around two years ago to join the team and to preside over the Clock workshop in one of the upper rooms of the building. As we ascend yet further, past Robert’s room with its ceremonial livery gowns, we pass The Queen’s solicitor’s clock in the workshop, with its glass mechanism and 4kg pendulum. In a warren of rooms at the top are the artists’ studios. In one, Jon is at work restoring the painted faces of grandfather clocks, when he is not enamelling watch dials in the kiln for their all British, £16,000 Robin and Robina gold watches. In yet another room, an art shop, are John and Wayne, busily occupied restoring a Chinoiserie lacquered clock case, whilst other rooms still house rows of clock parts arranged in regimental rows. Back in the haven of the ground floor shop are the charming Maria and Sarah, completing, together with Robert’s wife Robina, the Managing Director (absent on the day I visited) Robert Loomes & Co Extraordinary Watchmakers.
