This seems really odd, but I am going to do that deeply non-intuitive thing, eulogise another part of the local media. The people I have in mind are Rutland Radio, and specifically Rob Persani, experienced hand, and Josh Begley, star of the future. Their love of the region, good nature and banter comes across in everything they do and they truly help make Stamford & Rutland a more enjoyable place to live. Rob has recently got engaged and best wishes to him, and to the whole team of broadcasters. If you have not tried Rutland Radio, give them a listen on 107.2 FM or 97.4FM.

HEALTH & BEAUTY
Hair and Beauty makeover Genevieve Potter
C
LAIRE Kendrick from Uppingham was selected for our March hair and beauty make over, thanks to Oliver Lee Hairdressing, Natalie Dams Beauty and ‘Wolf in Disguise’ makeup. Claire, who has three children aged between three and eight, was feeling in real need of a hair and beauty overhaul. Friends had recommended Oliver Lee and she’d stumbled across the makeover opportunity on the salon’s Facebook page.
She comments: “My hair had literally overgrown, and I’d had a disaster with home colour which had left my ends black and my roots purple and red! “I’m a full-time mum and don’t have too much time to spend on myself, so consequently I just kept pushing my hair up and out of the way. I also hardly ever wear more than a tiny bit of make-up. I was cooking tea for my children when the salon called to let me know I’d been selected and I was so shocked but delighted.” Step in the dream team; renowned hairdresser Oliver Lee, Natalie Dams Beauty and Karolina Horspool (AKA ‘wolf in disguise make-up’).
12
HAIR Olly cut Claire’s hair in to a modern, collar-bone length graduated style, removing length and heaviness to add texture and movement and creating a soft sweeping fringe. Jacob coloured Claire’s hair, creating a natural dark brown base with loads of warm highlights – and no purple in sight! CLAIRE’S VERDICT “I love my new style and the best thing is how easy it is to manage and style myself. I can literally rough dry it and it still looks great, but Olly has also shown me how to use straighteners to give it more wave. It is so much easier! “I have to admit to having trust issues with my hair and I was very wary of having a fringe, which is a throwback from my childhood, but I trusted Olly and I’m so glad that I did.”

BEAUTY Natalie Dams and the team also stepped in to provide Claire with some of their signature treatments. Firstly, Morgan perfected Claire’s eyebrows with the precise, seven step HD method, which framed and opened up her eyes. Natalie created LVL lashes; to lift and curl Claire’s natural lashes, giving a wide-eyed look.
Finally Natalie applied perfectly glossy and long-lasting Jessica gel nails in a wintry deep red. CLAIRE’S VERDICT “I’m really happy with my brows and lashes, especially as I now don’t even need mascara which saves me valuable time every morning. My brows look so much better, and I love my glossy nails.”
MAKE-UP Karolina created a glowing, natural look for Claire, starting with her eyes so that she could remove any excess powder without ruining the base. She applied a light concealer over eyelids and underneath the eyes, followed by a nude eye shadow over the lid area. She then added a light, sparkly shade to the inner corner of the eye, followed by a taupe shadow in the crease and up to the outer corner. Claire’s lash line was defined with a mix of black and deep brown powder shadow, blended along the lash line for a super natural look. Foundation and a cream highlighter were mixed and lightly buffed with a brush from the centre of the face outwards, and then set with a light powder. A soft, matt bronzer was used to gently sculpt under Claire’s cheekbones and peach blusher was gently blended across the apples of her cheeks. To finish the look, Karolina applied a peachy gold lip gloss and a very light coat of black mascara. KAROLINA’S TOP TIPS Always go for a slightly lighter base and then warm up the face with bronzer and blusher For a versatile look for eyes, use a light, sparkly shade in the inner corner and over the lid and then build up a darker eye for the evening, using a taupe shadow in the outer corner and crease. To create a perfect base, you first need a perfectly moisturised skin Don’t forget to wash your make up brushes every week, using a gentle shampoo CLAIRE’S VERDICT “This make up makes me feel like a more glamorous version of myself, without being too heavy or overpowering. I love it!”

The traditional salon experience, combined with the use of machines for efficiency and precision, allow for long lasting nail results. Clients agree that their nails remain strong and shiny all the way up to their next appointment and, more importantly, their natural nail remains healthy underneath because of the excellent primer and prep technique. Repairs are free since it is extremely unlikely that these will be necessary.
Mudhoney Beauty Russian volume lashes are a new softer, lighter, non-damaging type of lash extension on the beauty market. Lots of women who have had the option to swap are trying the switch from ‘classic lashes’; a method that took off after the ‘cluster lash’, to the new Russian volume lash. There is no irritation with Russian lashes. They don’t twist, turn or hang heavy. They are weightless. They are fluffy. They are beautiful. Depending on how thick you want to go, you can pick between 2D right through to 7D. 2D being the most natural,. 4D is proving to be very popular at the moment, a little in between the two. Length is also an option, you can have a lash as short or as long as you like. Lashes last 4-5 weeks before you need infills, but in total, 6-7 weeks before they fall off naturally with your own eyelash. Prices vary between £45-£80 and infills vary between £30-£55. Russian lashes take between 75 minutes and two hours to do and are available at Mudhoney Beauty in Stamford with Silke, above the Loft Hair Boutique in St Paul’s St. • You can contact Silke today to book yours in on: 07970 533743

UPDATES
Garie Nigel Hairwork: 30 years in business G
arie Nigel Hairwork is proud to say they have been in business for thirty years this year. Having survived and embraced the many changes in Stamford and the differing styles and trends the hairdressing world has had to offer, Garie Nigel Hairwork are still among the top salons in the area. They have seen the big perms of the eighties, Princess Diana and Posh Spice from the Nineties – crimping, smoothing, long, short, light and dark, they have witnessed it all! 2014 saw Garie’s daughter, Monet, win a place on the TIGI Inspirational Youth Team, one of only ten stylists chosen in the whole country. Education and further learning and advancement has always been important to Garie Nigel Hairwork and you will often find the team visiting trade shows, attending in-salon workshops, with trips to the TIGI and Wella academies in London, whether for advance cutting, product knowledge or colour correction – to ensure they are professional at all times with an excellent knowledge base. Recently, in 2015, Becki’s Beauty Boutique with Rebecca Smillie, opened within the salon. She offers Gelish and OPI manicures and pedicures and Hi-Brow treatments, all of which have been very popular with clients. This year, the launch of The Braid Bar with Laura and Bryony – a walk-in service @ £10, has been successful. Following this new venture, they will be teaching small groups of mothers and daughters how to braid, with the proceeds going to a children’s charity.
Garie Nigel Hairwork is owned and run by Garie with the help of a fantastic team, including Jackie Caprio. Jackie originally commenced her employment with Garie Nigel Hairwork back in the late 80s and then returned to her roots (no pun intended) in 2012 and manages the salon on a day-to-day basis. Other team members who deserve a shout out are: Sharon, Monet, Bryony, Jordan, Laura (who has just completed her training and is a fully-fledged Designer), Alex and Becki.
Stamford Yoga N
ow in its second year of operation, Stamford Yoga prides itself in being one of the most beautiful and friendliest studios in the area. The studio is of typical Stamford architecture with lots of natural light beaming through. The studio is open 7 days a week with Yoga and Pilates classes at all times of day and evening. Students of all abilities are catered for with classes ranging from Beginner classes to the strong Power Yoga classes that give a great challenge to those seeking a more intense practice. Specific classes are also offered for abs, lower body, arms, shoulders, back care, raising energy levels, stress relief, fat burning, relaxation, etc. The studio also offers a unique range of classes to provide variety and interest such as Yoga with the Chair, Yoga with the Bolster, Yoga with the Stretchy Band and the latest edition, Yoga with the Ball. Regular workshops are also held to provide greater knowledge and immersion in a particular aspect of Yoga or Pilates. Those who start Yoga quickly get hooked through its health-giving properties and feeling of peace and wellbeing. Yoga is excellent at shaping and toning the body too and of course improving flexibility. The studio’s aim is to make Yoga accessible and fun and bring ancient teachings into the modern world. • Stamford Yoga, 12 Broad Street, Stamford, PE9 1PG Mobile: 07738 272474 Email: info@stamfordyoga.co.uk

OUT & ABOUT
Historic Melton Mowbray cinema’s young owners add a modern touch to bring film fans flocking The Regal Cinema at Melton Mowbray is carving a reputation for itself as a destination picturehouse. Film fans are flocking to the luxury boutique venue, which sells tickets for comfy two-seater sofas and offers home-made cakes in a building which dates back to the halcyon cinematic days of the 1930s. Nick Rennie Membership: Costs (per year) went along to meet the cinema’s owners, - Single £25, Joint £40, young couple Jacob and Bryony Mundin
N
IGHTS out at the movies at the chain multiplexes are very much the same wherever you are in the UK as customers are rushed in and out of screen rooms which all look the same and which can often feel pretty soul-less. But that’s most certainly not the case with The Regal Cinema in Melton Mowbray, where film fans can choose to relax on two-seater sofas or luxury soft seats in a building full of character which dates back to the 1930s. Home-made cakes are served in reception, as an option to the traditional fare of popcorn and ‘pick and mix’, and there is also the option to take hot drinks or something alcoholic into the movie with cup-holders on every seat. Customer service is clearly high up on the list of priorities for owners Jacob and Bryony Mundin, who rescued the old picturehouse from closure three years ago this month (March). Thousands of people have signed up as members thanks to the drive and innovation of the young couple, who are both aged just 25. Jacob said: “It wasn’t easy at the start. Our members tend to be older, 50 and above, and we had to convince them as a couple in our early 20s that we could run a cinema. Before we opened we had already signed up 1,000 members so there was a lot of pressure to give them what they wanted. We have managed to do that, though, and people stop us in the street now to tell us how much they enjoy coming along.” Integral to the success of the The Regal Cinema is the friendly feel of the place. It’s intimate and homely, as well as being incredibly comfortable for patrons. Particularly popular are the five sofas which are each named after cinematic legends – Beauty and the Beast, Bosom Buddies, Bonnie and Clyde, Danny and Sandy (Grease) plus Mr Darcy and Mrs Bennett. “We’ve also got 16 luxury seats at the back and 84 standard seats at the front and these are a big improvement on what was there before,” said Jacob. “The old cinema used to have 216 seats but we’ve halved that number and also taken the wall out at the back so customers now have double the leg room.” Movies have been shown in the building for 80 years but that proud history almost came to an end in April 2012 with the death of dedicated previous owner John Merryweather. His family kept the cinema going for a couple of months before deciding they could no longer continue. A campaign was launched to reopen one of the town’s most popular assets but it remained closed for nine months until the Mundins took it over. Jacob and Bryony

were no strangers to working in a picture house as both had been employed since they were teenagers at his mother Amanda’s small independent cinema in Derbyshire, called The Ritz. His brother Louis has also just started running one in the north of England. Bryony said: “It’s great when we all get together because we all run cinemas and we have plenty to talk about.” The couple have now signed up 2,600 members. They all enjoy discounts on tickets and a brochure of upcoming movies sent to them before the general public are told. Around 46,000 people came through the doors in their first year and estimates indicate they have increased that by 10,000 in the last year. Jacob said: “We show films three or four weeks after they are on general release which means we are not committed to showing them for long runs. “We can mix up our films during the
week and that is the only way a small cinema like ours can survive.” There are always healthy attendances for the Silver Screen offerings for over-50s, which are shown on Tuesday afternoons to coincide with the hugely popular weekly street and cattle markets in Melton. Regal customers don’t just have films to choose from. Live screenings of West End theatre shows, operas, ballets and even pop concerts all regularly sell out. The couple work long hours, Jacob on mainly front-of-house duties and Bryony as the projectionist, which involves working with digital files as opposed to the 35mm film spools of yesteryear. They have to juggle their cinema commitments with looking after 18-monthold son, Milo, and Bryony is expecting their second child next month (April). She added: “It’s very exciting running your own cinema. It’s hard work but we really enjoy it.”

ACTIVITIES
Child Friendly S Antonia Scott finds out what’s going on creatively in Stamford for your little ones KNITTING PARTIES:
Stamford’s very own knitwear designer and author, Libby Summer is hosting some Knitting Parties this year. She extols the benefits knitting can have: “Knitting is not only a great hobby but it’s good for you too. Science says knitting makes humans warmer and happier. Knitting is repetitive and rhythmical which means it has a meditative quality. Many people testify to the way in which knitting alleviates stress, giving them a sense of purpose and achievement. Whatever else is going on in your life, your knitting basket can always be at hand to comfort and soothe. Sometimes, our ambitions can be greater than our skills, and that’s where knitting parties come in.” Relax in a lovely atmosphere, enjoying good food and drink, whilst being coached through any knitting dilemmas and dreams. All of Stamford’s Knitting Parties are hosted at The Stamford Wine Bar by Libby Summers and supplied with delicious food and drink by The Stamford Delicatessen. For the Saturday Workshops, Libby could accommodate children aged 10 + if accompanied by an adult, so parents would have to book a place for themselves and their child. Teenagers 14+ are welcome to attend on their own. Friday 11th March from 10am – 1pm: TEXTURE NOT TEXTING (£39) Explore the huge range of possibilities of knit and purl, turning your experiments in a mini hot water bottle cover. Saturday 20th March from 10am – 4pm (£75): Keep Warm & Make a Tea Cosy
SEW EASY....
TWO LITTLE BIRDS: Run by Stamford based professional seamstress, Vicky Palmer, Two Little Birds can provide your child with an exciting hour or two of creative fun for either a birthday party or holiday activity. Starting with simple and fun designs, the group of children will choose fabrics and patterns and then get sewing. Under the careful eye of Vicky, an experienced sewing teacher (and mother!), the children will each make a brilliant creation to take home – such as a Sock Monster or Owl Key ring, or more complicated designs for accomplished sewers. Each party bag also has a creative sewing kit inside to make at home. Sewing parties can be tailored to the age of your children with simple hand sewing projects for younger children, and the chance for older girls to use a sewing machine. A typical party lasts for 90-120 minutes depending on the age and number of children attending. Vicky is fully insured and DBS checked and will provide all necessary materials including fabric, felt, buttons, thread and stuffing, plus the use of all her equipment and simple templates and designs. £10 per person or £12 with party bags. • For more information: Tel 07906 804085 or email twolittlebirds@ sky.com

Stamford KETTON CRICKET CLUB
Antonia Scott catches up with John McAvoy, Ketton’s new Juniors Head Coach to give a shout out to Chris Mainstone his predecessor and Founder of Ketton Juniors - one of Ketton’s unsung cricket heroes!
I
n 2004, Chris Mainstone made an enquiry at Ketton Cricket Club to find out what, if any opportunities there might be for his then 9 year old son. “None” was the answer. With a population of 1,800, and a primary school with (then) 120 pupils, Ketton was not a small village, short on resource or potential junior players, so Chris (a time served cricketer himself) took matters into his own hands. Ten years later, and the 2014 season at Ketton saw a total of 92 Junior cricketers John McAvoy across seven different age groups and a Girls team enjoy regular coaching from one of the 21 ECB qualified coaches and helpers. Ketton’s Junior cricketers regularly compete in the Borders County Youth League and to date, 11 players have been selected to take part in the Leicestershire Youth County Cricket programme. As the new season begins once more at Ketton Cricket Club, children from as young as five years old, right through to 20 years old benefit from support and input from a small army of qualified adult coaches as well as a fantastic range of facilities and equipment - from bowling machines and nets to essentials like cones, bibs, first aid kits and playing equipment. However, none of this would have happened were it not for Chris and his vision of cricket for everyone in the village. For the past 12 years, Chris has had to raise money and is solely responsible for organising numerous fundraising events as well as securing sponsorship from local business and ‘The Whitebread Trust.’ He also recruited volunteers, mainly parents of children at the club whom he had coached, to join in and take responsibility for their age groups. Chris would then arrange for the volunteers to complete the Level 1 ECB Coaches courses, their CRB checks and First Aid courses, and get it all funded by The Whitebread Trust. In return, Chris set up the ‘Ketton Casuals’ cricket team as a way of giving something back to the volunteers and giving them the opportunity to play local friendly fixtures. Chris also liaised with the ground staff to manage the schedule for all junior home fixtures, along with arranging the end of season awards which includes a paired wicket tournament for all age groups and organises trophies, medals and food. Chris also arranges the schedule for all age groups’ indoor winter net sessions, liaising with local schools and colleges for availability, negotiating rates and assuming overall responsibility. Chris was nationally recognised at the end of last season and
Chris Mainstone (left) received an England & Wales Cricket Board Coach Award for outstanding contribution in Leicestershire. Modest as ever, he simply said, “Although it’s lovely to be recognised I don’t feel right getting personal plaudits when so many other people put in so much effort to the junior set-up at Ketton; Simon Forster, who has been with me since the start of my involvement and has been Treasurer all that time, Graham Young, John McAvoy, Dave Walpole, Craig Hawksworth and Tim Harris who have all done such great work in managing junior teams. It’s a wonderful thing to have such an active community of people.” John McAvoy is soon to take over the reins and says, “It is no exaggeration to say that without Chris Mainstone’s passion and vision for Junior Cricket at Ketton, a lot of kids wouldn’t have had the opportunity to sample the sport over the last decade. His original vision was simply that Cricket should be appealing and accessible to ALL children in Ketton. It was never about money, winning or producing elite players. The fact that those things have happened along the way is a bonus, but can ultimately still be credited to him. If you ask any one of the volunteers that Chris has recruited over the years why they agreed to help, each of them will say they wanted to support Chris and his vision.” John estimates that in the past 10 years as many as 250 – 300 children have had the opportunity to sample cricket which they otherwise wouldn’t have had if Chris had gone for the easy option and just taken his son to the next nearest club to Ketton village that did offer junior coaching. How fortuitous for Ketton that he didn’t!

HEALTH & BEAUTY
Update on Flawless Faces “The best move I’ve ever made” – that’s how Neeta Matharu describes relocating her Stamford beauty business, Flawless Faces, from its previous location to 17/18 Scotgate.
N
EETA has transformed what was a ‘Paint a Pot’ studio in to a luxurious beauty haven and is reflecting on a year of transformation. She comments: “We’ve acquired a lot more new clients as our location has now become more noticeable to passing traffic and pedestrians, so we attract people from Stamford and also the surrounding areas. We couldn’t be happier here and now that the Flawless Faces team is complete, 2016 is set to be our best year to date.” Neeta is keen to reward her loyal clients and there are always some great offers available at the salon, including a Mother’s Day offer available throughout March, where for less than £50, you can completely spoil your mum with gel polish, a 30 minute back, neck and shoulder massage and an eyebrow tidy. She is also excited to have introduced the complete HD brow make-up range. As well as the expert 7-step HD brow method, clients can now treat themselves to some must-have makeup, including a ‘sculpt and glow’ face palette; a highly blendable cream palette available in two shades, with a darker contouring shade and a highlighting cream, which Neeta says “just doesn’t budge” (£45). Neeta’s current favourite facial treatment is the recently launched Decléor advanced sculpt
and lift facial (£60 for 75 minutes), which treats loss of skin tone and lifts and plumps the face. It includes a diagnostic back massage, which makes it feel even more luxurious. The Flawless Faces team are all highly qualified and have developed their very own signature treatments. Neeta is a self-confessed “brow geek” and threading expert, Emily is a Decléor and Lycon waxing specialist (with Hollywood and Brazilian waxing becoming very popular), Agnes has a loyal following for her manicures and pedicures (and especially her glamorous gel nail extensions) and Rebecca is brilliant at threading, Fake Bake spray tanning and massage, including Indian head massage. Receptionist Niamh is always on hand to help clients and is a social media whizz – look out for Facebook and Twitter offers. To celebrate Flawless Faces’ first year in their great new location, for the month of March, when you spend £25 you will receive a free brow tidy and shape (thread or wax). • Flawless Faces 17/18 Scotgate, Stamford PE9 2YQ T: 01780 660301 www.flawlessfaces.co.uk (book online) Facebook /FlawlessFaces01 Twitter @FlawlessFaces01 STAMFORD LIVING MARCH 2016

egarty LLP is running a seminar in conjunction with Landmark IFA concerning the recent pension changes. It will be held at the William Cecil Hotel in Stamford on Thursday 17th March. The speakers will cover the practical implications of the greater pension freedoms introduced last year and why drawing income from your pension should not always be your first choice. The talk will also cover the importance and benefits of planning ahead. • Please visit the website www.hegarty.co.uk or contact Angela Babb, Hegarty Solicitors at angela. babb@hegarty.co.uk or 01733 295618 if you would like to book.

A world of natural discovery for babies at The Children’s Garden Day Nursery & Montessori Pre-school In TCG’s cosy Baby Room, we follow a unique enquiry-based ethos rooted in Montessori principles. At the heart of this approach is the powerful image of the child as competent and capable of interpreting the world around them. We consider every child to be a beautiful, independent, fascinating and creative individual. We provide an inspiring environment for children to explore, create and be joyful. Led by one of our Montessori teachers, also a trained Nursery Nurse and mother, our babies’ capabilities are observed carefully so that their play can be extended and challenged. This approach requires deep loving respect for each child who comes to us and is given by highly trained staff, many of them mothers themselves. Our lovely Baby Room has been carefully designed by owner Claire Kenyon, a Montessori Teacher and Nursery Nurse, and offers indoor/outdoor play into a baby-dedicated area. Claire has also studied Naturopathic Nutrition and the children are offered nutritious, organic meals and healthy snacks throughout the day. We support baby-led weaning for parents who wish to follow this approach. ASK LEO SPECIAL
Lancelot ‘Capability’ Brown’s 300th anniversary “Lancelot Brown changed the face of eighteenth century England designing country estates and mansions moving hills and making flowing lakes and serpentine rivers, a magical world of green.” (Jane Brown, ‘The Omnipotent Magician’). Jean Orpin and Sue Lee have looked at some of the latest research and the local work of this famous figure. The Man Lancelot Brown is the most famous landscape designer in Garden history and this year marks a nationwide celebration of the 300th anniversary of his birth. He grew up in Kirkhale in Northumberland and started his career as an undergardener at nearby Kirkhale Hall before moving south. By the age of 25 he was Head Gardener at Stowe, owned by Lord Cobham. He would have shown Cobham’s visitors round the garden and must have impressed them as many employed him in the future. Cobham ‘lent’ Brown to his friends to help them design their gardens. He had a reputation for being charming and witty and made friends with his employers. Cobham and Brown remained friends until Cobham’s death in 1750. He received the nickname ‘Capability’ because after being shown round a garden he would say ‘there are capabilities here’.
Architect At Stowe, Brown took on the responsibilities of clerk of works and became competent in architecture, submitting building plans. By 1746 he was an efficient administrator, capable of carrying out complete building and gardening projects. After Cobham’s death Brown stayed at Stowe for two years then set up on his own. His first independent commission was to build a house and design a garden for Lord Coventry at Croome Court, the whole project costing £400,000. He was then employed by Lord Brooke to make alterations to Warwick Castle as well as the gardens. Once again Lord Brooke and Brown became friends. Throughout his career Brown designed buildings as well as creating gardens. In 1754 the accounts at Newham Paddox describe him as ‘Mr Brown the architect’. Some of his most extensive work can be seen at Burghley House.
Engineer Recent research has shown that some of Brown’s earliest work was in Lincolnshire. At Grimsthorpe, his title was given as ‘engineer’. This particularly referred to his work with water which was considered essential in every landscaped garden. This aspect could cause problems as dams had to be made and water levels maintained. Brown became skilled at solving these problems as he studied soil types and drainage.
Landscape Gardener Brown was not the first to introduce landscape gardens but his work was to be the most influential and prolific. Kip’s early 18thC engravings (such as this one of Madingley) Madingley Formal Gardens show houses surrounded by canals, fountains and formal gardens. Influential classical scholars criticised this style and Brown’s predecessor at Stowe, William Kent was the first to introduce landscapes with temples into English gardens. Brown formed his own ideas and created ‘natural’ landscapes of trees, lakes and lawns removing the formal gardens and including existing deer parks. In the 18th century it was important to show that you were a man of taste and could embrace these new ideas. Brown was not short of clients and created a huge number of gardens. The landscapes he designed were expensive: his clients needed to be enormously rich. A sign of his success was that fourteen estate owners signed a petition for him to receive a royal appointment, which he did in 1764.
Legacy There are over 260 gardens attributed to Capability Brown. Some like Madingley and Castle Ashby are certainly his, many like Burghley retain substantial features and buildings but some were only partially implemented and some plans were put aside. What is certain is that Brown was admired during his lifetime and that his influence was enormous with some of the attributions likely to be by followers and imitators. As fashions reverted to the Picturesque style he was condemned for destroying formal gardens but today we are aware that those would not have survived the 20thC lack of manpower or the straitened circumstances of the owners. Once again we appreciate the surviving estates with parkland, lakes and trees many of which are being revitalised in this anniversary year. Typical Brown Landscape
Businessman Brown built up a very successful business. He travelled a great deal but he could not, of course, supervise the implementation of all his plans so he established methods of working with associates and sub-contractors. Brown visited some gardens to check on progress but he employed a number of foremen who used local contractors or worked with the estate owners own workforce. By these means he made enough to buy himself a Manor House with land in Fenstanton where he probably intended to retire.

The Orangery
Burghley House I
n 1683 the 5th Earl had employed George London to create an elaborate formal garden with a Dutch canal and radiating avenues, culminating in a mile long avenue of lime trees called Queen Anne’s Walk. In 1754 the young Brownlow Cecil, 9th Earl, inherited Burghley. He had plans of the house and gardens drawn up by John Haynes in 1755 then, in 1756, his wife Letitia Townsend died leaving him £70,000 for his life. This enabled him to make improvements to the house and garden and Brown was employed. Brown submitted his own plans and suggested sweeping changes. George London’s gardens would be cleared completely and a more fashionable landscape garden was created with shrubberies and a small lake. Improvements to the existing deer park were made by planting trees. Brown also worked with the Earl to make improvements to the house. He designed and built the Orangery and the Stable Block around a courtyard. Many alterations were made to both the interior and exterior of the building including raising the second-storey windows on the south side to give an even skyline. Over the many years he worked at Burghley he continued to develop the gardens and park. He moved fully grown trees from place to place as well as planting more. He designed lawns sloping down to the lake with a ha-ha to keep the animals out. In the park he built the impressive stone bridge with four Coade-stone lions on its parapets. The view from the bridge was considered the finest view of Burghley House. ‘CAPABILITY’ BROWN 2016 – PLACES TO VISIT Burghley House PE9 3JY For visitors there will be an exhibition in the House Entrance about Brown and his influence at Burghley. There will also be a leaflet with a self-guided walk around Burghley Park including Brown’s vistas and the Lion Bridge. Burghley House opens again on March 19th. For groups special tours can be arranged to discover Brown’s influence on the landscape, garden and/or the buildings. (Contact 01780 752451 or Burghley@burghley.co.uk)
“This is a great place, where I have had twenty-five years of pleasure in restoring the monument of a great minister to a great queen” (Lancelot Brown)
Grimsthorpe Castle PE10 0NB As well as his early work the landscape here owes much to Brown. Coach tours around the park will explore his contribution and there are also cycle and walking tours planned – these have limited numbers. (Contact Ray Briggs 01778 591205/ray@grimsthorpe.co.uk) Fenstanton PE28 9JS Brown owned the Manor House and was Lord of the Manor. A leaflet describing locations connected with Brown will be available and there will be a display in the church. From June to September there are a series of events starting with Open Gardens at the Manor on 18th/19th June, 1.30pm-5.30pm and including a sponsored cycle ride in August from Brown’s birthplace in Northumberland to Fenstanton. The aim is to raise enough to restore the Brown memorial in the church. (Details on website & Ray Whitby 01480 370973/ray@srobb.co.uk) Belvoir Castle NG32 1PE Brown’s plans for Belvoir were recently rediscovered and a surprising story about them is told by the Duchess of Rutland in her book ‘Capability Brown & Belvoir – Discovering a Lost Landscape’. The ‘Lost Landscape’ can be visited on Sundays and Mondays from March 13th (Contact 01476 871001 or see openingtimes@belvoircastle.com) Madingley Hall CB23 8AQ Brown was employed at Madingley in the mid1750s and elements of his design are unchanged. The gardens are open (Open Gardens Scheme) on Sunday 5th June 2.30-5.30pm. The Hall is now part of Cambridge University and will host a conference, ‘Moving Heaven and Earth’, from 5th-7th August. Castle Ashby NN7 1LQ These gardens have drawings by Brown which are now on display in their new archive building. The gardens are open daily from 10am with the tea room etc opening again on 25th March. Ampthill Great Park MK45 2HX This is a public park which has had a Lottery Grant to restore its Brown landscape. cannot express how overwhelmed I was. We are still receiving donations, so the exact amount raised is still to be confirmed, however we have made OVER £6,000. It’s quite astonishing when I only aimed to raise £1,000 when the idea came about. “I couldn’t have been made possible without the fantastic support of the team at Westside Health & Fitness Club & owner Simon Dale. In addition my father who instructed 3 of the 7 hours, Paul Brewster. We have received endless donations of money, raffle prizes along with goodies for the TeamGeorge Tuck Shop we created for the day to keep the riders fuelled. A few to mention who donated goodies are Asker Bakery, Stamford, Waitrose, Stamford, Claire Thorneley, Helen Cole Nutrition, Emma from Sweet Ideas & Jane Christie. “We were overwhelmed to also discover we had secured Charity Funding from Barclays Bank, who have donated £1000; along with HSBC, Stamford who kindly donated £500. It is amazing & I never dreamt we would receive this kind of support & funding. “We had in excess of 50 raffle prizes which could have been won; I am so grateful for everyone’s generosity especially to those local businesses in Stamford who supported the event, to mention a few, Emma Cannings Facial & Body Care, Nelson’s Butchers, Natalie Dams Beauty, Oliver Lee Hair, The George of Stamford & Burghley House. Moores getting better prices for local people by taking properties to London. WHY HOME BUYERS ARE MOVING TO RUTLAND, STAMFORD AND THE VALE OF BELVOIR...
M
oores Estate Agency have offices in London, Oakham, Stamford, Melton, Uppingham, and the London platform at Grantham Railway Station with more platform offices poised to open this year. Covering five key towns, seven hundred villages and seven hundred square miles across the region, it’s not surprising that Moores are the agent of choice for local people as well being at the forefront of promoting Rutland and Stamford as perfect choices for thousands of buyers in London and the South East. With March and April the most popular months for buying and selling houses, Managing Director, Vernon Moore explains why his team lead the property pack.
Is the housing market in good shape this spring? 2016 is shaping up to be a boom year for us with 70% of our buyers moving here from outside the region thanks to our creative marketing strategies. We have a strong partnership with Douglas & Gordon – one of London’s largest independent estate agents – which means we have a direct link with buyers looking for rural properties of all kinds and a very powerful message to convey. It’s a fact that for every mile travelled either out of Kings Cross or up the A1, house prices are reduced by a massive average of £12,400. Thanks to our towns doing so well in ‘Best Place to Live’ polls, that message is filtering through fast and we are doing all we can to make sure potential buyers are in no doubt about the fantastic lifestyle opportunities in this region including great transport links and superb education. As well as having offices in all the key towns, your railway platform presence is growing – how did the idea come about? I spend a fair amount of time travelling by rail myself and realised that we can directly reach thousands of commuters as they wait for their trains. The Grantham office is situated on the London platform and is designed to introduce commuters to this area and show them what kind of property they could purchase should they decide to
*HOUSE PRICES ARE AS PER FEBRUARY 2016. BASED ON 4 BEDROOM HOME OF APPROXIMATELY 1400 Sq Ft
relocate outside the capital. Inspired by how international retailers operate at Kings Cross, the platform office has a coffee bar feel and free Wi-Fi making it easy for commuters to acquire information to browse further once their journey is underway. Already a great success, the office is proving a rich source of new buyers for our clients and we are planning to roll out similar offices on other carefully selected platforms this year. Well known for cutting edge innovation, how important is ‘traditional’ agency at Moores? Customer service is more important than ever to us. More and more clients are losing heart in property searches on the internet which are often fruitless. Our clients can rely on a complete package of service which involves the exclusive care of one of our team twenty four hours a day, seven days a week as well as the full attention of one of the three directors who oversee all valuations, negotiations and sales. We provide a bespoke property search service plus a discreet sales package – in fact, 30% of our January
sales took place without boards, marketed directly to waiting buyers. Nationally the average fall through rate on sales is one in three; at Moores that figure is around one in ten – how do you manage such a high success rate? We believe it’s not all about getting a sale – it has to be the right sale to the right client at the right time as well as securing the basics such as making sure funding is in place and buyers are ready to proceed. All our clients receive the same level of care and attention and that approach works for us. Last word? If you are considering a move, get in touch with us now for free, no obligation advice. We are showing properties next month at the Country Life ‘Move to the Country’ Show and your home could be part of our portfolio. We very much look forward to being of service. STAMFORD PEOPLE
A shared passion for local sport has strengthened family ties for Bob and John Feetham One of the secrets of a strong father and son relationship is a shared passion. And for Bob Feetham and his son John it is local sport in Stamford and Rutland. They both have links with football and cricket clubs throughout the district and their background in journalism led to them starting a ground-breaking sports website. Nick Rennie shared a coffee with the Feethams to find out more about a duo who have a remarkable family bond
W
HEN Bob Feetham was growing up in Stamford in the 1950s he can trace the moment he began to fall in love with sport. His father had two shops in the town selling the newly affordable television sets and radios and one day he brought one home for the family. Bob (73) recalled: “This football match came on between Wolves and a Hungarian team called Honved. “I had never seen anything like it before and I’ve been a fan of Wolves ever since.” That unlikely affiliation with the team from the West Midlands has been passed down to his son John, who went to his first game there as a baby, and in turn to his son, Elliot (5). John (34) chuckled as he remembered being the only child at school wearing a Wolves shirt: “I have suffered Mickey-taking. I can remember turning up for football training with a gold shirt on and everyone else was wearing the red of Liverpool or Manchester United. My son is going through the same thing now.” A CAREER IN PRINT When it came to school, Bob admits he didn’t do very well. But he ended up taking a job at 18 as a cub reporter on the Rutland and Stamford Mercury, beginning what was to become a glittering career in newspapers. He became a leading light at national sports publications such as the Angling Times and Match Weekly and braved volatile picket lines to work in newspapers during the 100-day strike. Bob eventually headed up the newspaper
division at EMAP before the company decided to sell up to Johnston Press. “I was heartbroken when we sold the newspapers – I had tears in my eyes on the day I left the office for the last time,” he recalled. THE RUTLAND TIMES After EMAP’s decision to sell its newspapers, Bob was convinced that a family-run set-up could make a success of local papers in the form of the Rutland Times and Bourne-based The Local. John said: “It was great. Mum (Carol) was in reception, my sister Katie was the editor and I was sports editor. Dad did a lot of writing. We have this mutual passion about sport. He loves writing about it and always has a fresh angle on a story.” Bob, who lives in Uffington, decided to sell his newspapers to Johnston Press in 2006 because he could see the industry changing rapidly with less demand for the printed product. LAUNCH OF SRSN Although his dad was a winger, John became a goalkeeper when his football career took off. He played semi-professionally for Bourne Town, Deeping Rangers, Blackstones and Yaxley, clocking up around 300 games in the United Counties League. John was also a talented cricketer for the likes of Burghley Park, Uppingham and Bourne. His contacts led him to launch the SRSN (Stamford & Rutland Sports News) website three years ago. It attracts thousands of hits
every month and also now runs awards nights for local footballers and cricketers. Based at Oakham, the business also incorporates a graphic design service, with John’s colleague Christopher Strickland. Bob said: “We were sitting in the garden one day and I just said to him ‘let’s launch that website you keep talking about’. “It wouldn’t be a success without John. He has such a passion for local sport and the people he interviews respect him because he has played with or against many of them.” STAMFORD AFC Bob’s sporting passion is now being injected into Stamford AFC, where he is chairman, as the club settles into its impressive new stadium at Borderville on Ryhall Road. While Bob sits with committee members in the stand at matches, John will often be reporting pitch-side for his sports website. John lives in Stamford with his wife Kelly and the couple also have a two-year-old daughter called Daisy. He said he has inherited Bob’s passion for hard work and he continues to be amazed at his father’s standing in the community. “You can go anywhere in this area and there will be someone who knows my dad,” added John. “He has friends in so many circles in Stamford and Rutland. I am in awe of him really because I have a lot of respect for him and what he has achieved.” • The SRSN website can be found at www.srsn.co.uk STAMFORD LIVING MARCH 2016

BBC Question Time broadcast from Stamford School O
n Thursday 28th January The Stamford Endowed Schools were delighted to host the BBC’s flagship political debate show, Question Time. The panel consisted of; Transport Secretary Patrick Mcloughlin, Labour MP for Birmingham Yardley Jess Phillips, SNP Westminster Leader Angus Robertson, author and writer for The Independent Yasmin Alibhai-Brown and CEO of M&C Saatchi Moray MacLennan. They tackled topical questions about the refugee crisis, large corporations avoiding high tax bills, the costs of transport and the EU referendum. Earlier in the day the face of Question Time himself, David Dimbleby, spent time with Sixth Form politics students and gave them the once-in-a lifetime opportunity to become panellists and take part in their own political debate. The five student panellists had to field questions from their peers who were making up the audience. The Question Time production team also worked with Stamford Endowed Schools Theatre Studies students during the day and allowed them to tour their production trailers and the set. This provided the students with a fascinating behind the scenes insight in to the making of the programme including the huge tasks of transporting and building the set each week. The students then had the privilege of speaking to the director about their interests in programme production and tips on how to enter the industry. Principal of Stamford Endowed Schools, Stephen Roberts, said “We were delighted to host BBC Question Time and to see in inner workings of the programme. The students had the opportunity to meet with David Dimbleby and to take part in the rehearsal as panellists and the audience. I am sure this experience will stay with them for a long time. • To find out more about the Stamford endowed Schools, visit www.ses.lincs.sch.uk

ugby is as British as mud and drizzle… so the mothers who brought you ‘Stumped by Cricket’ have stepped up to the touchline to explain the rules of this noble game. Their latest book ‘Rugby Tackled – a mothers’ translation’ takes the uninitiated spectator onto the pitch, sidestepping tackles, to unravel the scrum, rucks and mauls. This latest handbag-sized edition looks at the importance of each player on the team and simplifies the workings of the game, brought to life with beautiful illustrations by Kate Spurway. Amusing and light-hearted in tone, it makes the game accessible and keeps readers turning the pages and wanting to learn more. From Rugby club parent to hopeful Six Nations supporters, ‘Rugby Tackled’ will help new spectators become fully paid up rugger buggers in no time. This book is the creation of three mothers who have nine sons between them. Rebecca Chatterton, Annabel Buik and Tara Shippey have spent hours together huddled on the school touchline. They came to realise that they’d have much more to contribute to post match discussions if they researched and understood the sports their children love to play. • Available at www. theallaboutcompany. co.uk and Amazon. KM...The best advice I can give is to anyone is to focus on your financial plan - what are you trying to achieve, what’s your time horizon, what are the risks? Spring into the world of Interiors!
Rannveig Stone offers advice in refreshing and revitalising your home for the Spring
S
PRING time often brings about the need for change. It’s one way to beat back the winter blues and to feel revitalised. Homes, gardens and wardrobes across the country go through a rigorous spring clean and revamp to satisfy this need. Professionally I have found a Feng Shui service has become increasingly popular for when a home needs a lift rather than a complete design overhaul. Personally I also appreciate the value of this, especially at this time of year. So I thought I would impart ten top tips to help you make your interior feel fresh and revitalised for the warmer months ahead.
1
De-clutter and introduce clever & attractive storage. It is not necessary to display all that you own at the same time and less is often more striking and easy to maintain.
RIGHT: Burgon & Ball storage tins selection from £9.99. Large faux leather trunk £119.00 Umbrella stands £34.99 each Nook Furniture
2
Rotating throws and cushions with the seasons will act as a quick and easy room makeover, without huge expense. Store items not in use and rotate when the mood takes you. Light blue Tibetan sheepskin throw £160.00 Longleat cushion £39.00 Rattan chair £190.00 Snow Design & Interiors
3
Repositioning existing artwork, family pictures and ornaments in different rooms can be enough of a shake-up. However, investing in a new piece of artwork or sculpture for a prominent location will create an instant ‘wow’. Art work by Gillian Durno £250.00 Hunters Interiors
4
I love what a mirror does to an area. Install decorative mirrors to create light and a feeling of space. Acanthas round mirror £225.00 Delcor
5
It is the day and age of up cycling. Painted furniture is very popular and off the shelf flat packs can be transformed with a whacky handle. Linen cupboard painted in Farrow & Ball Cooking Apple Green £595.00 Chez Soi Door Knobs from £3.95 each Snow Designs & Interiors

t is possible to breathe new life into your home whatever your budget. A simple switch around of furniture, ornaments and giving the house a deep clean is a therapeutic, easy and inexpensive way to shake off those winter blues. If you also have the luxury of investing in a new feature item then that’s an added bonus. Too much can look busy, too little unloved and not homely. It is important to make your home personal, so don’t be afraid of nick knacks. By wringing the changes and alternating ornaments with the seasons it is possible to create a calm and uncluttered environment whilst keeping a personal touch. Be inventive with how you use your home and wring the changes with how it suits your lifestyle at the time. Come, it’s time to spring into spring! LISTINGS; Delcor. UPDATES
Where do you find the best buy-to-let deals? L
ocal trusted property advisor David Crooke, Managing Director of UPP Property Agents has launched ‘The Rutland and Stamford Property News’, a regular newsletter and accompanying weekly blog on a subject very close to all our hearts – the Rutland and Stamford property market. Many landlords and investors regularly seek David’s advice on matters such as considering whether to extend or not and how it might affect the rental price? If leasehold or freehold is a concern for buy-to-let investors? Which town is a more attractive investment? How much (or how little) renovation is needed to make a property ‘tenant ready’? What to buy, a terrace or a semi? The list goes on… Whereas David still offers his free one to one buy-to-let advisory service, the newsletter provides comment, guidance and analysis that relates specifically to the overall property market here in Rutland and Stamford. And via his blog you’ll also find properties from all the estate agents in the area that he believes may make decent property buys, be they buy-tolet investments or for homeowners...almost ‘Homes under the Hammer’ Rutland and Stamford style! David explains how well the newsletter has been received and how the articles have prompted investors into new purchases. “We have created a newsletter mailing list to ensure no-one misses out on the next issue either in printed form, via the David Crooke, Author of ‘The Rutland & Stamford Property blog or on email”. He continues, “The next few weeks are really exciting as I am looking forward to meeting with some News’ & property blog. new investors and discussing the various rental opportunities on the market. Mostly I am hearing from investors wishing to make the most out of their pensions, and from those whom are in a position to strike before the additional 3% stamp duty hits at the end of March”. With offices in Oakham and Stamford the established lettings team have earned their reputation for providing an excellent property management service and for being the ‘go-to’ agency for local, trusted property advice. What’s more, judging by the number of distinctive pink ‘Sold By’ boards on display in the area, it seems their cost effective sales packages are also having a positive impact. Strong trustworthy values underline their distinguishing name, and it seems ‘UPP Property Agents’ really do go the extra mile in ‘Understanding People and Property’. Issue 2 has been included within this magazine. If your copy is missing please contact UPP Property Agents on 01572 725 825 and one will be posted to you. Professional Finishing Techniques at Ewe Wool Shop by Rowan yarns Knitwear designer and author Jem Weston 4 Stamford Walk, Stamford PE9 2JE, Tel: 01780 763838 Sunday April 10 Jem writes: “We put a lot of time and love into knitting our garments. This workshop will teach you the skills needed to give your garment the professional finish it deserves. On the day we will cover many essential techniques, including professional buttonholes, picking up stitches and sewing using a mattress stitch. Cost to include Rowan yarn, lunch and refreshments.” Visit www.i-love-ewe.com for details of other workshops.
Rental property income - more changes to come In her last article Kerry Hilliard of Stephenson Smart Chartered Accountants reviewed forthcoming changes for ‘buy to let’ landlords. This time Kerry looks further at the tax changes that are on their way relating to expenditure that arise from repairs and replacements.
T
ax relief is currently given for expenditure incurred on repairing a property and for replacing ‘integral fixtures’ such as baths and fitted kitchen units. There has previously been no relief for the replacement of furnishings. From April 2016, it is proposed that tax relief will be given for the replacement of furnishings including moveable furniture such as beds, tables and other items such as televisions, fridges, carpets, linen, crockery and cutlery. The new replacement relief will give relief for the cost of the replacement asset, less any proceeds received from the old asset that is being replaced. No relief will be given for any furnishings that have not been in the property before and any element of the replacement asset that represents an improvement would be excluded from the relief. The 10% wear and tear allowance which is given whether or not any actual costs are incurred will disappear so it makes sense, where possible, to defer replacement expenditure until 6 April 2016 when relief will be available. Owners of properties which are not fully furnished and never qualified for the wear and tear allowance are the clear winners from these changes. For more information and planning advice on tax matters contact Stephenson Smart on 01733 343275 or go to www.stephensonsmart.com

LOCAL WALK
The Ultimate Welland Valley Walk If you do one long walk locally this year, this is it! And as the weather starts to improve, it’s time to get planning. If you’re not feeling up to the whole lot in one go, it can be split in two at Barrowden.
C
ATCH a bus or get a lift to the start-point in Uppingham and walk back along the Welland Valley, traversing a beautiful landscape of rolling meadows and riverscapes. This is a truly inspiring walk. UPPINGHAM TO SEATON (4.5 MILES) The walk starts in the Market Square at Uppingham. Walk along the High Street East and take the first right in a southerly direction; follow the public footpath to Lyddington, passing by the College Playing Fields; at the footpath ‘crossroads’ on the outskirts of Lyddington, take the right turn to visit the village. As you head back on the path towards Seaton, you will see on your right the fishponds constructed about 1320 to supply the palace. From here the path takes a straightforward route to Seaton. Lyddington refreshments: Marquess of Exeter (01572 822477) and The Old White Hart (01572 821703). Small shop and post office.

SEATON TO BARROWDEN (4 MILES) In Seaton, turn right at the George and Dragon pub, with the church on your right. Pass down a small path with (restored) workers’ cottages immediately on your right. As you enter the field you have a stunning view of the valley and Harringworth Viaduct. The Harringworth Viaduct was opened in 1878. To construct it, three thousand navvies dug clay from the Welland Valley floor, made twenty million bricks and built the 82-arch three-quarter mile viaduct in little more than two years. This task was done to clip fifteen minutes off the journey time from Nottingham to St Pancras. And we think we’re timeobsessed. The path crosses the disused railway line and then skirts to the left of a former mill before crossing a small bridge. Head across a field, under the arches and then over a stile onto the pavement leading into the village. Leave Harringworth on the road east. After a couple of hundred yards there is a path on the left which crosses a field to the river. Follow this track to Barrowden, crossing The Turtle Bridge at the half-way point and then tracking alongside the south side of the disused railway line, crossing over to the northern side, heading northeast across a field and entering Barrowden on the west side. Refreshments: George and Dragon at Seaton (01572 747773); the White Swan Hotel at Harringworth (01572 747773). At the time of writing the White Swan is temporarily closed, so please check first. BARROWDEN TO GEESTON (5 MILES) The Village Green at Barrowden with its duck pond makes the perfect lunch or picnic stop, since you have by now done about half the walk. It would also be a good start-point if you
want to split the walk into two. From The Green, follow the road east. After a couple of hundred yards, there is a tiny fork right; take this and in a few yards the path goes to the left, crossing the meadows towards Wakerley Bridge. At the bridge turn back left up the road and after 300 yards take a footpath right which leads back towards the river. The next stretch runs above the river and then through an ancient spinney. The path runs just north of St Luke’s Church, Tixover, a tiny church out on its on in the middle of a field. A service is held there once a month. Walk through Tixover, cross the busy A47 and head along the road to Tixover Grange. Opposite the entrance, a path heads across a field, crosses the road again and then follows a farm track toward Geeston (you are now on the Jurassic Way). Refreshments: Exeter Arms, Barrowden (01572 747247). Good pub grub, great location GEESTON TO STAMFORD (4 MILES) At Geeston, take the footpath which skirts behind the gardens of the houses on the southern side and at the road turn right and cross the historic Collyweston Bridge. About 100 yards after the bridge a path forks left up a field towards Easton. Once you have reached the top, you will join Ketton Drift, a mettled track and enter Easton. Pass a shop on your right (drinks, chocolate, plasters etc.) Turn left just past the Bluebell pub to the church (an early evening drink by mow perhaps?); immediately after the church there is a path to the right which takes you back to Stamford; from the second stile you have an excellent view of the town. You will eventually reach the Town Meadows, where you can enjoy an ice-cream and a Welland rest. STAMFORD LIVING MARCH 2016

HEALTH
Orthodontics ‘British teeth’ are well and truly out of fashion as more of us than ever, both children and adults, opt to have our teeth straightened. However, it’s vital that you find the right dental practitioner and type of treatment for you. Alysia Anderson gets her teeth into the subject with local consultant orthodontist Richard Cousley
D
ESPITE living in England for 22 years, Richard has retained his gentle Northern Irish accent. I imagine that this, coupled with his calm manner, puts his clients instantly at ease. In fact, feeling comfortable is key to finding the right orthodontist for the job, explained Richard. “It’s especially important for children to feel relaxed when they are having braces fitted, while adults should feel able to discuss all their aspirations and concerns.” Even more important is to ensure your chosen practitioner is a fully qualified orthodontist. Richard has been the lead NHS consultant orthodontist in Peterborough since 2001 and also sees private patients at Total Dental Care in the city’s Cathedral Square and Oasis Dental Care in Stamford. Richard is not only fully qualified but has also designed specialist orthodontic devices (now used in about 20 countries), written a textbook on the subject and travels widely giving guest lectures and training fellow professionals. ORTHODONTICS – A DEFINITION Richard explained: “Orthodontics is the speciality part of dentistry involved in the diagnosis and treatment of abnormal positional problems of the teeth and jaws, e.g. crooked teeth, abnormal bites and small or large jaw sizes. Technically, any dentist in the UK is permitted to ‘do’ orthodontics within the limits of their training. However, since undergraduate dental training only covers basic theory and simple techniques, most orthodontics is provided by specialists.” These are dentists with three years of full-time specialist training in university and hospital posts. Their competence has been independently tested by Royal College of Surgeons examinations (recognised by the qualification MOrth RCS after their name) before admittance to the General Dental Council’s list of orthodontic specialists (www.gdc.org.uk). Before embarking on treatment, Richard recommends that you check an orthodontist’s qualifications and ask to see a portfolio of results from previous patients to see evidence of good clinical skills. “A small proportion of orthodontists undergo two further years of full-time training to qualify as consultant orthodontists, typically recognised by the additional letters FDS (Orth) RCS,” added Richard. Further information is available from the British Orthodontic Society (www.bos.org.uk).
TECHNIQUES AND APPLIANCES Numerous techniques and types of braces are available. While it’s great to have choices, this can be confusing, especially if patients aren’t told about both the pros and cons of latest innovations. “My role is to guide each patient towards the optimum choice for them, unclouded by misleading marketing,” said Richard. “I tailor treatment to each person’s needs, no matter how simple or complex the problem. For example, many children benefit from the use of specialised ‘orthopaedic’ braces to enhance jaw growth, rather than having tooth extractions, but may not be given this choice by some providers if this approach is mistakenly deemed too complex.” Types of braces vary from fixed metal ones to ceramic versions with tooth-coloured wires, called aesthetic braces. Metal appliances are routinely used for teenagers as they are extremely effective and their flat profile on the teeth is beneficial for those playing wind instruments or contact sports. Richard also fits plastic orthopaedic braces for 11-14 year olds to correct prominent teeth and/or an undersized lower jaw. These can often result in very beneficial changes in lip closure or the shape of the face. While children like to liven up their braces with brightlycoloured elastics, most adults prefer tooth-coloured fixed braces and virtually invisible removable aligners. Aligners are thin transparent plastic braces, worn in a series to progressively move teeth by small amounts. They are worn day and night but removed for meals and tooth brushing. Richard warns that many dentists offer free aligner ‘consultations’ but may not provide a thorough clinical assessment, nor accurately explain other options. Richard is one of the first UK orthodontists to have access to specialised software for aligner cases, meaning that he personally controls the tooth movements rather than relying on technicians with no clinical experience. This means that he uses the latest aligner options which aren’t advertised direct to the public. “This revolutionary new approach, combined with my specialist knowledge, makes aligner treatment predictable and more affordable than many quotations patients have shown me.” MINI IMPLANT ANCHORAGE AND SNORING APPLIANCES Mini implant anchorage is a new way of maximising the effectiveness of brace treatment, even to the extent that conventional jaw surgery can be avoided in patients with certain bite and jaw problems. Richard designed the Infinitas system (www.infinitas-miniimplant.com) and is regarded as the UK expert in this new field, travelling widely to train other orthodontists. Last year he also helped to design a new, comfortable, unobtrusive and cost-effective appliance to improve snoring and associated sleep quality problems. Worn at night, it advances the lower jaw, bringing the tongue forward to open the collapsed airway. Good news for long-suffering spouses everywhere! • For details visit www.visageorthodontics.com or call Oasis Dental Care on 01780 762182.

Weaver UK Ltd
Sosennah Every asks David Weaver, local carpet and upholstery specialist, for a little help
I
called David Weaver from Weaver Ltd to rescue my beautiful Travertine stone floor which looked dull with the grout lines a dark grey colour. Other issues I wanted David to deal with were scratches and a number of little holes that were appearing in the stone. Firstly, David used a Diamond lapping process to remove the thinnest layer of the Travertine surface to smooth out all but the deepest scratches. This makes the stone look very white but David assured me the cleaning and reseal will bring the colour back to its original honey and caramel colour. On the second day, David and his wife Mel came and took out the kick boards to the kitchen cabinets and sealed them and all the walls with a plastic sheet to prevent any dirt and spray from the cleaning process reaching them. The floor was then swept and vacuumed and the cleaning process started. Unfortunately on my floor, it was apparent that some of the soil on the floor had been trapped by an additional seal coating placed upon a dirty floor, which had obviously been done by previous owners to save money. So David had to strip the floor of the previous seal, and then clean it with a high pressure rinse, bringing the floor back to its natural condition. The final process once the floor was dry was to reseal the floor to prevent stains from cooking fat, red wine, coffee and many other acidic spillages going into the floor. David used a high quality seal and once this was dry used a buffer to bring up the shine. The drying process can take a long time depending on the porous nature of your stone and also the weather. The result was truly impressive, I can thoroughly recommend them. The company also does carpet cleaning and curtains. • 24F Pillings Rd, Oakham LE15 6QF. Tel: 01572 759899 www.weaverltd.co.uk
Uppingham Summer School U

READY STEADY BAKE! Easter wouldn’t be Easter without Hot Cross Buns, Simnel Cake and lots and lots of chocolate! This month Deborah Pennell has been out and about meeting some of our local bakers and getting her hands covered in chocolate, just in time for Easter
W
E are lucky in the Stamford area to have several bakeries that still produce wonderful Easter treats, saving the more time-oppressed individuals amongst us a lot of hard work. Rich Fruit Cakes with soft marzipan and Cinnamon and Orange Peel infused Hot Cross Buns can all be part of our Easter celebrations. Like all areas of cooking, there is however a knack to baking – Mary Berry didn’t churn out sunken, under cooked cakes to get where she is today and Paul Hollywood might have gorgeous eyes but, he can actually pull off a mean cream puff! Baking takes skill and is an art. Some people manage it, and others don’t. I stand somewhere in the middle, with rather hit and miss creations: (1) depending on my level of concentration when reading the recipe, (2) whether I forget to set my timer and (3) the fact that I am relying on a 40+ year old Aga to maintain heat and not cremate my baking prowess. So let’s take a look at what a couple of our individual bakers are planning to put into our local cafés and delis this Easter, and also what treats our local bakeries have up their sleeves. Sarah Conway has been baking for The Stamford Deli since it first opened back in 2014. It was a chance cup of coffee and a chat with Kelly Combes and her partner Mark one day that established that they had all lived in Harrogate, where Sarah had worked in a deli, and they loved similar food. The following week, Sarah dropped off some samples of her wares and that was the start of what has turned out to be a recipe for success. Sarah takes inspiration from recipe books, but adds or takes away ingredients to put her own stamp on her baking. The Red Velvet & Chocolate Heartache recipe book provides lots of ideas. Sarah and Kelly have devised recipes for the Deli, which often have a
64
story behind them … The Fat Rascal inspired by Bettys Tea Room in Harrogate, takes Sarah and Kelly back to their roots; their Easter creation will have almonds, raisins, choc chips and a hint of orange zest. A Deli favourite, the MiIlionaire’s Flapjack, was created by Sarah in memory of her Mum, and Bundts are a passion of Kelly’s, with their delicious sounding Easter version of Rhubarb and white chocolate, sure to be hugely popular. Other Deli favourites that will be featuring for Easter will be Portuguese Egg Custards and Mini Egg and Crème Egg Brownies. Lynn Fitzpatrick owns a company called Deliciously Different Cakes, which provides cakes for The Fine Food Store (run by her daughter) and The Stamford Garden Centre. Originally starting off working in The Fine Food Store, she has baked for them for the last 12 years and set up her own company to try to meet demand for specialist birthday cakes and wedding cakes. Her wonderful creations can often be seen in the window of Fine Foods. For Easter this year the café is going all out for chocolate, with cakes decorated with chocolate eggs and delicious Easter treats. Fully aware that sugar is becoming more of an issue in our diets, Lynn is now starting to experiment with other natural sweeteners in her cakes for a more healthy option. However, I did ask her what her favourite cake would be and a 4 layered Ombre Cake with a chocolate layer, chocolate and caramel layer, caramel layer and plain vanilla layer all covered in a chocolate ganache, does not seem to come under that remit! How delicious! A new idea for the café is ‘Cakes for the Weekend’, where you can order any of the 12 cakes on display in the shop, in any size from 7 inches upwards. This won’t require much notice and is a great way to cheat if you want to pretend you’ve done some home baking!

And Don’t Forget The Chocolate! (I definitely wont’ be!)
A
ll around Stamford you will be able to buy cheap, poor quality Easter Eggs, but amazingly enough you can actually buy, really good quality, locally produced, chocolate Easter gifts very reasonably priced. With prices starting at £4.50, Barbara from The Stamford Cupcake Company has started a new venture, producing a wonderful range of chocolate products, all hand crafted using top quality French chocolate. The range includes Easter bunnies and lambs, beautiful Easter Eggs with gorgeous champagne truffles and wonderful boxes of homemade chocolates as good as any you would find in Fortnum & Mason or Selfridges - Trust me! Head for her bakery at George Farm at the top of the St Martin’s Rd close to the A1 opposite the water works. Call 01780 489364 or 07825 153003 to check opening times. And even more exciting, you can now create your own chocolate frenzy! Although Barbara is still producing a good amount of Cupcakes, as well as all her Bespoke Birthday and Wedding cakes, she has decided to add another string to her bow. Welcome to the world of the CHOCOLATE WORKSHOP. Barbara kindly invited me and a couple of friends to test one of her new classes and strangely on this occasion it wasn’t difficult to find friends who wanted to join in! Not only did we come away laden with chocolate goodies including Easter gifts and chocolate high heeled shoes, we also laughed and laughed and all promised we would return with children and friends.
This is a great Kids party idea, Hen party or Corporate bonding session. The chocolate workshop is priced at £15 per head for groups of 8. Barbara is about to start a Takeaway Chocolate Pizza, which can be delivered for a small charge anywhere in Stamford. These are great for Easter, Birthdays, Mother’s Day, Father’s Day or a romantic gift. A huge range of toppings are available including mini eggs,
marshmallows, peanut butter cups, rolos, orios, maltesers and the list goes on and on. Pizzas can also be personalised with a message. Finally, for those with intolerances, do not panic. Gluten free, Lacto Free (Moo free) and Vegan chocolate can all be bought in Silver Lane Whole Foods. They will also order in that special Easter Egg for you, but will require a couple of weeks notice. Happy Days… Happy Easter!
And in the bakeries: Askers As usual, Askers will be producing delicious Hot Cross Buns, along with wonderful Easter Shortbread Rabbits and Ducks. Easter Nests stuffed full of desiccated coconut, cream and mini eggs will also be difficult to resist. Treat yourself or a member of your family to something produced by the oldest bakery in town. Hambleton Bakery This Award Winning bakery has decided to revisit a great old favourite for Easter this year with a delicious Celebration Simnel Cake, complete with its very own presentation tin. A wonderful gift and a chance to indulge in what’s great about Easter other than chocolate! Another addition this year is an individual Simnel tart, which as it suggests has all the components of a Simnel cake but in the form of a tart. I know where I’m heading in early March.

FINANCE BROKING
Money Saving Tips for Car Buyers: Top 5 Benefits of Using a Finance Broker, with Charles & Dean
I
f you’ve ever dealt with car dealerships, you’ll be familiar with their endeavours to entice you with a finance package that appears attractive on the surface, but often proves costly in the long run. Tom Perkins & Simon Grace from Charles & Dean have uncovered the Top 5 Benefits of Using a Finance Broker to help you to make your next car purchase more affordable – if you’d like to save money on financing your next car, read on.
The White Hart:
Simple pleasures in unfamiliar places Reviewer: Katy Burrows
A
S lovely as our little old town may be, it’s nice to escape occasionally – and for a break from the familiar, there’s no need to travel far – just a few miles down the road will do. If you’re anything like me, and you find a sense of anonymity rather alluring – The White Hart in Ufford provides the perfect hideaway – assuming of course, that you don’t already live in the vicinity of this 17th-century village inn. The White Hart offers a choice of dining areas, all with a different feel – from the cosy bar area, to the light and airy Orangery and the ‘farmhouse-kitchen style’ restaurant, not forgetting the fully sheltered patio garden – the ideal spot for lunching after a springtime walk. It was a Thursday evening when I met Nick at The White Hart, and we chose to relax on one of the comfy sofas in the welcoming bar area until our starters were served in the main restaurant - ‘Garlic-roasted Portobello mushroom bruschetta with a poached hen’s egg’ for Nick, and ‘Local game terrine’ for me. Nick’s bruschetta provided ‘all the ingredients for pleasure’, in his words, and the spiced date purée that came with my terrine was delectably moreish. On to the mains, and Nick’s ‘Locally shot breast of pheasant’ came with a ‘delicious’ savoury bread and butter pudding and blackberry jus, while my ‘Char-grilled 8oz rib
66
eye steak’ was served perfectly rare with a Portobello mushroom, vine tomato and chips. To finish, Nick tucked into the ‘Pear and almond tart with gingerbread ice cream’, while I absolutely devoured the ‘Hot caramel spiced apple cake with cinnamon custard’ – I can’t resist anything sweet and ‘cinnamony’! After our desserts, we relaxed and chatted to Sam, the head chef, who prides herself on serving ‘British classics with a twist’ to satisfy every palate. Sam is the sort of person you can’t help but instantly warm to, and she clearly enjoys what she does – ‘I wouldn’t do it if I didn’t love it’, she enthused as she bid us farewell and headed back to the kitchen. Our cappuccinos arrived in lovely ‘duck egg blue’ china – coffee always seems to taste better when it’s served in a beautiful cup. Feeling well fed and content, we reflected on our conversations over the course of the evening, which were mainly around the importance of being in the moment. That’s the joy of getting out of town for the evening – everything seems better when you feel more present in the world, amid the beauty of unfamiliar surroundings. • Weekly specials: Fish & chips on Wednesday nights – 2 for £16, Curry night on Fridays - 2 for £18. • The White Hart, Main Street, Ufford, PE9 3BH. Benefit One: Choice, Flexibility & Speed As a broker, we have immediate access to a variety of lenders, whereas car dealerships are often restricted to using in-house lenders. This enables us to offer our customers more choice and better value for money on car finance than the majority of car dealerships. Benefit Two: Competitive rates As a broker, we have well-established relationships with some of the UK’s biggest banks, so we are able to negotiate considerably better rates than most car dealerships, which means we can offer our customers substantial savings on their car finance. Benefit Three: Clarity As a broker, we fully discuss all appropriate finance options with our customers, including loans, leases and overdrafts. Our customers can then make an informed choice to ensure their finance package suits their individual requirements. Benefit Four: Experience As a broker, we act in the best interests of our customers and their individual financial circumstances. Our tailored approach improves our customers’ chances of being successful in their car finance application. Benefit Five: Protection & Assurance As a broker, we are members of the National Association of Commercial Finance Brokers and are regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority, so our customers can be assured that we will always act in their best interests. About Us Charles & Dean is an independent finance broker with ultra-competitive rates. We take pleasure in making vehicle and asset finance more personal, as well as a lot more straightforward. SNIK: Unmasked Stamford-based stencil artists Snik – real names Nik and Laura – create stunning works of art that grace the walls of a growing list of international clients. And walls, as they reveal, are both their inspiration and their canvas...

HE next time you walk past a wall, stop and think. It may soon be the temporary location of something altogether more beautiful than a bunch of cobwebs and some badly daubed graffiti. Snik emerged from the underground world of urban art and are now enjoying the limelight as trailblazers for a new breed of artists, intent on highlighting fresh creative processes and challenging perceptions. Their work is being snapped up by all kinds of people, including Nottingham’s celebrated 2 Michelin-starred chef Sat Bains, and collectors worldwide. Says Nik: “A lot of traditional art galleries turn their noses up at street art. Landscapes and animal portraiture, done in traditional mediums, tend to be the norm in many places, and it’s always been a battle to get past that prejudice. It’s probably why we get more readily accepted in places like London and Berlin and other big cities across the world.” “We were inspired by traditional graffiti writers and their attitude of putting out free art on walls. The work didn’t need to be hanging in a gallery to be seen. The whole point of street art was making it accessible; it broke down barriers and made it easier for people to absorb and appreciate it.” “But you can’t get a decent wall in some places now,” he reflects. “It’s the general rule of gentrification. You paint in a run-down area, where people have stopped caring about it, and then when you finish people go and look, and the property values start to go up. Eventually it pushes the people out that made it what it was.”
70
PIONEERING SPIRIT “We are always trying to push our techniques,” say Nik. “Every piece we do has to be better than the last. Stencils have always had a bit of a bad reputation because they are seen as an easy way to create a big image. People criticise saying it’s not painting because we are not using freehand skills, but there is more to it that that. You need to get past the stigma and that is part of our reasoning. There is an art in cutting and an art in the delivery – the painting. We put hundreds of hours into our pieces.”

When asked to give advice to young artists Nik is clear: “Just keep practising. We are selftaught and started out with an exacto knife and ten cans of car paint from Wilko, but now we use over 500 colours and shades from an international supplier. As we work harder, we get better; we never stop pushing. “We went to Miami in December to paint a 10-metre wall, and we are having a solo show in Paris this June. Every time we show in a different country that, for us, is a personal success. It shows how far we can reach. There’s a lot you can do with art and if your work is good people will notice. It’s that simple. Just get out there and paint.” • To find out more about SNIK and their work, check out their Facebook page at www.facebook.com/snikarts, or on Instagram & Twitter @snikarts. PROFILE In a new column starting this month Deborah Pennell interviews Head Chefs and Local Food Heroes In and Around Stamford… In this article we hear how a Junior European Kick Boxing Champion became the present Head Chef at Burghley!
TOMASZ NIEDBALA
H E A D C H E F F O R A B S O L U T E TA S T E LT D AT T H E O R A N G E R Y AT B U R G H L E Y Tell me a little bit about yourself? I am 34 years old and have a partner of 18 years. We recently got engaged and we are planning to marry this coming October in our home country of Poland. We have a wonderful son who is nearly 2 years old. What brought you to this country and eventually to Stamford? I came to England in 2001 after Poland joined the European Union, because I had heard so much about this wonderful country and I wanted to experience it for myself. I ended up in Stamford because my fiancée has family in the area. Where did you train to become a chef? I originally trained at Chef College in Poland for 3 years, studying in college in the mornings and working in a restaurant at night. When I came to England I initially worked on a farm and then landed a job working in the kitchens at The George of Stamford. After a year I decided to go to Stamford New College to do a NVQ 2 & 3 in Catering & Hospitality. I won the ‘Best Student Award’. I also did a course in Pastry at Loughborough College which I fitted around working fulltime so it meant that for a period I was working 7 days a week. Through Loughborough College, I was entered into a big Patisserie competition in London, where I won a Silver Medal in Desserts. What jobs have you had since working as a Chef? I have worked at a number of well-known local hotels and restaurants including Barnsdale Hall Hotel, Fratelli and The Olive Branch. One day when I was looking online I came across an advert for the Head Chef position at Burghley, and I have been running The Orangery kitchen for 5 years, this month. What do you like most about working for Absolute Taste at The Orangery? Working for Absolute Taste has given me opportunities that I would not have had in other jobs. I travelled to work on a Formula One event in Spain and to Istanbul to work on The Red Bull Catamaran Race. I also worked at The BBC Good Food Show with Michel Roux, Tom Kerridge, Mary Berry and Paul Hollywood, who designed a menu alongside Absolute Taste for a 150 cover Fine Dining restaurant. And I must not forget to mention the lovely lady, who comes to The Orangery most Thursdays, checks that I am working and then
78
asks for whatever I feel like cooking her – what a compliment; she has such trust in my food! What are your interests outside of work? Even though we do not do evening service in The Orangery, there are regular functions on and I am often still in the kitchen at 7 or 8 o’clock at night preparing for the next day, so I love spending time with my family. I have always loved boxing and after starting at the age of 12 years old I became Junior European Kick Boxing Champion for 2 years running in 1997 and 1998. I am taking time out from boxing at the moment as I had an operation on my hand last year, but I hope to start training again early next year. Give me one interesting fact about working at The Orangery? Last year we served in excess of 7,000 scones! All produced in the kitchens here. What is the most popular dish on the menu? The pies are always popular. The Beef and Ale Pie is the number one favourite and people will order this whether it is a freezing cold winter day or the hottest day of summer! I find that rather amusing. Who is your favourite celebrity Chef? Marco Pierre White If you had the choice of any meal, what would you choose it to be? Something my mother cooks with traditional Polish dumplings.
• The Orangery Restaurant is open from Wednesday to Sunday 10am-4pm during the Winter. From Saturday 19th March to Sunday 30th October it will be open Daily from 10am-5pm. Please be aware, that the restaurant is occasionally closed on a Friday for private events, so telephone first. Group bookings are available on request Tel: 01780 761989
