FASHION

Autumn Style update Fashions come and go and are reinvented, so in order to update your wardrobe in time for some chillier days, Sally Stillingfleet asked the three Designers at Hunters Interiors to prove that with a few simple tweaks to your wardrobe you can still look and feel on trend

H

UNTERS Interiors, the Uffingtonbased Interior Designers, work with you to unlock your property’s potential. Georgie, Candy and Rachel understand that your home should be a sanctuary and it’s where you showcase who you are as a person - so it’s important that your home makes the right statement. They listen to your needs and aim to create a space that oozes creativity and style but also improves the flow and functionality of your space. Using an interior design service will enable you to tap into a market that just isn’t available anywhere else, which means you’re guaranteed to find what you’re looking for, from a new wallpaper or simple pot of paint to a whole new scheme, whole house or a commercial project.

Candy, Georgie and Rachel, with over 30 years of interior design experience between them, are passionate about giving you interiors that are stylish, bespoke and timeless. “During our years of working in Interior Design we’ve seen trends come and go, just like in fashion and sometimes they even do a full cycle! But we’ve loved every second and fully embraced the weird and wonderful world of interior design. We are often asked if we have a specific style or look that we favour - and the honest answer is no, one of the best things about working in design is that we get to create incredible schemes and interiors and no two will ever be the same.” Georgie explained: “They are bespoke and individual to every one of our clients and our enthusiasm, zest and vision mean we genuinely get the same excitement for each of our projects however big or small.” As you can see from the showroom their libraries are full to the brim with the latest collections from fabric and wallpaper suppliers to offer a vast range of choice. Whether it’s Modern, Contemporary, Classic or Timeless, Hunters Interiors will help you achieve the look you desire with a friendly service. • Hunters Interiors, The Dairy, Copthill Farm Enterprises, Deeping Road, Uffington, PE9 4TD Tel. 01780 757946 www.huntersofstamford.co.uk Make-up - A big thank you to Jo at Flawless Faces for expertly applying Arbonne make-up on this occasion. 17/18 Scotgate, Stamford. HEALTH & BEAUTY

Feel fabulous for the

party season As party season gets into full swing, Genevieve Potter has an array of products and treatments to help you feel fabulous

A brilliant facial

If there’s one facial to book in ahead of late nights and revelry, the CACI Ultimate facial could well be it. It’s a non-invasive treatment, backed by years of scientific development and its unique selling point is the way it tones and lifts the facial muscles, effectively re-educating muscle fibres and at the same time, improving the skin’s texture. It incorporates microdermabrasion, the CACI non-surgical face-lift, a ‘wrinkle comb’, LED light therapy, completed with a smoothing and hydrating mask. Results are apparent after one treatment, however if you want to get really organized, book a course of ten to see long lasting results, with maintenance needed every four to six weeks. The CACI Ultimate Facial costs £75, but as a special treat you can book it for £55, subject to availability. Or if you book and pay for a course, you can receive ten for the price of eight. Both offers available until 20th November 2015, please quote Stamford Living at the time of booking. • Equilibrium - 7 St Paul’s Street, Stamford, PE9 2BE Tel: 01780 757579 www.equilibriumstamford.co.uk

Unlike conventional spray tans it has a light, fruity smell, doesn’t go patchy and dries in a flash. It gives an even, natural glow and is a brilliant way to make you feel partyready. Vita Liberata spray tan costs £22. • Emma Cannings, Stamford Garden Centre, Great Casterton, Stamford PE9 4BB Tel: 01780 766583 www.emmacannings.co.uk

Make-up that’s great for your skin Youngblood is a very pure mineral makeup, now available at Renaissance. It was formulated by an aesthetics therapist, who wanted a product which would be suitable to use after chemical peels and microdermabrasion. It is free or any irritants or chemical preservatives and milled more times than any other make-up brand, so has a very fine feel to it. It applies beautifully, has a flawless finish and lasts well, so perfect for party nights out. Pop in to Renaissance to find out more. • Renaissance, 2 Mallory Lane, Stamford PE9 2AZ Tel: 01780 763768 www.renaissancebeauty.co.uk

Beautiful brows

If great skin is the blank canvas for your face, perfect brows are the frame. Mii Brows at Maples is a bespoke eyebrow treatment which begins with a personal consultation, followed by brow tinting, waxing, shaping and finishing. It costs £26.00 and is a great ‘pick me up’ for the face; whether your eyebrows are in need of re-shaping, refining or just a little more definition. Results will last between four and six weeks and a patch test is required ahead of the treatment. • Maples, 24 St Mary’s St, Stamford PE9 2DJ Tel: 01780 752725 www.maplesofstamford.co.uk

Your party dress will look even better with an all-over glow. Kirsten at Body Matters offers an exfoliating back treatment, using dermalogica hydroactive mineral salts followed by a blissful 20 minute stress-relief massage. Kirsten also highly recommends purchasing the dermalogica ultimate buffing cloth, for smooth skin all year round. It’s a long, machine washable cloth, which can be used daily with a body wash to achieve clear, soft skin (£12.65). Once your skin is smooth, why not add a golden glow with a professional application of Decléor self-tan (£20) – much less drying than most spray tans, it delivers an instant pick-me-up. The Body Matters’ dermalogica customised facial with microdermabrasion is also a brilliant pre-party combined treatment, for super clean, smooth skin. It costs £62.50 for 75 minutes, but you can get 15% off for the month of November when you mention Stamford Living at the time of booking (offer subject to availability). • Body Matters, Brownlow Street , Stamford , PE9 2EL Tel: 01780 270002 www.bodymattersstamford.co.uk

A facial in a jar

A must-have product to make a noticeable improvement to the tone and texture of your skin is the Environ Intensive Revival Masque – available from the Advanced Skin Clinic. Renowned in the beauty world as a facial in a jar, it delivers brighter, smoother skin to give you the perfect base for your party make-up (£49.95). The Advanced Skin Clinic also offers the radio frequency non-surgical face lift. Radio frequency works by stimulating the collagen production to strengthen the skin structure. The heat causes local contraction of collagen fibres, immediately tightening the skin and stimulating new collagen production. The treatment costs £125 per session for a full face, but you can book a taster session and 30% off courses during the Clinic’s anniversary celebrations on 19th and 20th November. Pop in or phone for more details. • The Advanced Skin Clinic, 8 High Street St Martin’s, Stamford PE9 2LF Tel: 01780 481155 www.theadvancedskinclinic.co.uk

The ultimate vitamin facial Vitamin C has long been used in facial products to brighten the skin but Decléor have taken things to a new level with the Ultimate Vitamin Glow Facial (£48), available at the Beauty Manor – situated above Brown’s hairdressing. The treatment begins with a diagnostic back massage to melt away stress, followed by the advanced facial with ingredients which include pure linseed, sunflower seeds and wheat germ – all packed with vitamins and antioxidants. Skin is cocooned in a gently heated decongesting mask and the treatment is particularly beneficial for breathing life in to mature, tired or dull skin. • The Beauty Manor, Above Brown’s Hairdressing, 3 Red Lion Square, Stamford PE9 2AQ Tel: 08449 994365 www.thebeautymanor.co.uk

NCT HOME BIRTH SUPPORT GROUP

THE PHOEBE RESEARCH FUND - UPDATE

Set up in February 2015 by Zoe Crowson, mother to 6 year old Phoebe who suffers from the rare form of Recessive Dystrophic Epidermolysis Bullosa (EB) – a condition which means her skin is as thin as a butterfly’s wings, with the slightest bump or knock causing extreme pain and damage – both internally and externally. As Zoe states, “Life becomes a constant risk assessment.” With only 5,000 sufferers in the UK and of those, a mere 20% have the type of EB that Phoebe suffers from, there is currently no government funding. Zoe’s focus for the Phoebe Research Fund is to find that all important cure and she recently received an official charity number 1163875 which should facilitate future fundraising. • For more details: www.phoeberesearch.org.uk

The NCT Home Birth Support Group are holding regular evening meet-ups every 3 months, starting on 30th October in different homes in the Peterborough and Stamford area where home births have taken place! Hosting the first meet up is Hannah Pattison who is working closely with the Peterborough midwives home birth team who have also recently launched officially. Hannah says, “It feels like there is a momentum building with home birth levels rising ever since NICE published their guidelines last year that it is the safest option for women with low risk pregnancies. We have found many women are put off having a home birth simply because they do not know anyone else that has had one. I myself nearly didn’t have one due to this reason. It can seem like you’re going out on a limb and doing something culturally alien. We are seeking to change that by creating a local network and from here build a community of support. We are passionate about home births because we have all had such positive birth experiences ourselves and believe this is mainly due to the environment we chose to have it in.” The launch is attracting parents who have already had home births who want to relive the experience and also parents to be who are considering or preparing for one. The Home Birth Support Group also welcomes prospective

fathers to come along - often they are the ones with concerns about their partner’s safety as well as for their baby. Hannah adds, “My husband will be coming to the groups as home births provide a real role for dads, as keeper of the environment.” • For more information, visit the Facebook page: Home Birth Peterborough

Antonia Scott catches up with Julie Armstrong, Founder of Little Voices

LITTLE VOICES How it all began.... Julie’s original stage background comes from dancing performances, having been a professional ballroom and Latin dancer – coming 2nd in Europe and 3rd in the world at the height of her career. This in turn led to presenting and acting on television in roles with Coronation Street, Waterloo Road, Cold Feet and Prime Suspect. Julie then began teaching Drama for seven years, before moving to Peterborough and opening her first Little Voices studio.

Inspiration, Motivation, Vision and Drive.... Julie thrives on seeing her pupils grow and develop, “I love to see the shy, quiet child, who finds it difficult to even make eye contact, opening up and becoming a happy, confident individual. For me it is not just about putting talented children on the stage, I am driven by the desire to help all children, no matter what their aims – a life on the stage, becoming an accomplished public speaker or simply having more confidence. Little Voices teaches you skills for life.” Julie’s motivation is the children – “I love my job – something not enough people can say! At Little Voices we teach in small groups – up to 8 pupils – so we can truly get to know each child, discover what makes them tick and tailor our teaching accordingly. Each child benefits from one to one attention and individual teaching – no getting lost at the back in a class of 30 pupils. I am very proud of my fabulous team of tutors and am very picky about who I take on! Simply having the qualifications isn’t enough – they need to share my ethos for the company and possess that burning passion which will in turn, inspire pupils.”

Passion, belief and mantras! Little Voices prides itself on creating inspirational, fun-filled lessons, taught by passionate, highly qualified tutors, ensuring that each child can excel in a safe and happy environment. Pupils work towards highly respected, accredited musical theatre, acting and communication examinations with The London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art. Children as young as 4 years old take exams and so far Little Voices has a 100% pass rate, with over 90% of the most recent exam candidates achieving a Distinction. “The children come first – they always have and they always will. Nothing will ever alter that. As a mother, I know how important this is to parents. Each child is individual and has to be treated that way.” Julie’s mantra has to be, “The Show must go on!” especially when she sees the children’s smiling faces in lessons, which reminds her why she does this. There is also a quote from Glinda, the good witch in The Wizard of Oz that she loves and was particularly important when Julie set up the business and had the inevitable start-up doubts: “You’ve always had the power my dear; you just had to learn it for yourself.” “It’s a quote I like to return to on a regular basis!”

“At Little Voices we teach in small groups – up to 8 pupils – so we can truly get to know each child, discover what makes them tick and tailor our teaching accordingly” Where next? Julie now runs Little Voices centres across Peterborough and Stamford and hopes to open up several new venues soon. With a maximum of 8 pupils per class, spaces fill up quickly as demand is high and often there are waiting lists, so Julie’s aim is to be able to accommodate everyone. Every child may apply for a free trial lesson with Little Voices in Stamford or Peterborough so they can join the fun and see what goes on. Winter Wardrobe Written by New College Stamford A level student Emma Church, 18

W

E all know it is coming to that time of year; the days are getting darker and the nights are getting colder, so what better way to warm up with what the autumn/winter collection has to offer. The latest trends include “capes, fur and shearling with pretty palettes, Sixties prints and flashes of shining gold” is what Vogue have to say for the new and upcoming season. However; not all of us have the luxury to model the high-end fashion, and look closer towards the high street fashion. So to make the task of buying a new winter wardrobe a lot easier, I have looked around the local stores (both in Stamford High Street and Queensgate, Peterborough) to see how we can look just as good as Vogue, but without the jaw dropping price tag. A key essential for those winter months is a warm, comfortable coat/jacket. With that in mind, style is still just as important. So here is a range I have put together that should bring together any basic outfit with a statement, stylish overcoat. Classic camel faux fur coat, Newlook £54.99 Jacquard knit coat, Phase Eight £110 Pretty in pink pastelle coat, Next £70

These boots are made for walking… Another must have in the Basic biker upcoming season is toasty toes. jacket, From boots to socks to slippers Dorothy Cover-up Kimono, is what we need to prepare Perkins £49 ourselves for the wintry time of River Island £40 the year. The range is endless with boots to fit every style with the ankle, Chelsea, biker and knee high to satisfy every taste and need. They say you can tell what kind of person you are by the shoes you wear, so tell them you’re strutting your stuff with Real suede Chelsea the latest fashion trends. London Fashion Weekend

After visiting The London Fashion Weekend on Sunday 27th September, the show just highlighted Vogue’s fashion forecasting very accurately. Walking around the Saatchi Gallery fur, pastelle colours and sixties prints was what I could see. Brands from the well-known designers like Vivienne Westwood to Jimmy Choo to more individual brands such as Vintage Fur Company and Loxley. Here are a few photographs I took whilst walking around the different brands. I managed to have a few words with the designer for the handbag brand ‘Loxley’ and she was telling me how “even though the darker colours like black, navy and hunter green are very popular for winter, you would be surprised as to how many people still buy the pastelle pinks, bright reds and the mustard yellows foe their winter accessories.” She also said how celebrities such as Amal Clooney are wearing her upcoming brand. However, we don’t all have to be runway ready to pull off these winter must-haves, as I have proved the high street is just as rewarding with the new and upcoming with what fashion statement pieces they have to offer. Being a student myself, at new College Stamford, I find shopping a necessity but the prices slowly build up. So to keep the cost down as you hesitate to empty your bank at the till, there is a blessing called student discount. To all the students who haven’t invested in a NUS card I highly recommend it, although it is priced at £12. So if you want to be saving even more money download the app ‘Unidays’ to get all the best deals for free.

PETER BARKER FINE ART

“An irresistible mecca for lovers of fine paintings” Peter Barker is renowned for his evocative and mood-enhancing landscapes, many of which echo the beauty of Rutland. The good news is that he now has opened his own gallery, right in the heart of our beloved county. And what a feast to behold! Within the walls of this wonderfully light and airy space you will find a superb range of Peter’s work, as well as a handpicked selection of some of Britain’s finest painters, many of whom are members of the major London Art Societies. Highly acclaimed David Curtis, Pete (The Street) Brown and John Lines, as well as the much celebrated Hazel Soan and Luis Morris (runner up of the Sky Portrait Award 2013) are but a few. For lovers of fine art, a visit to this gallery is a must.

ART

Peter Barker Fine Art at Welland Vale Garden Centre Award-winning artist Peter Barker has opened the region’s newest gallery showing the work of some of Britain’s finest figurative artists. Along with his partner, co-owner Jane Edkins, the couple are determined to provide a different offering to art lovers in the region and say that browsers are actively encouraged. Amander Meade takes them at their word Award winning work in oils, pastel, watercolour and acrylic… As a young boy Peter developed a deep love of nature through birdwatching, fishing and breeding butterflies and moths and it was in those early years that he discovered he had an innate ability to draw and paint all he observed. At the age of fourteen however, it was another prodigious talent for golf that led him to pursue the dream of becoming ‘the greatest golfer the world had ever known!’ Although by his own admission that dream did not quite materialise as planned, Peter did enjoy his share of tournament success as a professional golfer before deciding to embark on a new career in art in 1983. Self-taught, Peter’s work was swiftly accepted by the Stamford Artists’ Gallery and subsequently the Ringstead Gallery. Specialising in landscapes and wildlife, mostly in oils, but also in pastel, watercolour and acrylic Peter is able to capture the most compelling realism in his work, often returning to the same spot to depict it throughout different seasons.

Unique access to a most prestigious group of artists… A chance meeting in a pub led to a dilapidated potting shed becoming the refurbished venue for what Peter describes as a much needed Fine Art Gallery showing the work of some of the best fine artists in the UK. “‘Contemporary’ art is well catered for in the area, but we felt there was a lack of opportunity to see classy, representational fine art in the East Midlands so we are extremely excited to have the cream of the crop all under one umbrella,” he explains. It’s true that Peter and Jane have managed to attract a formidable stable of eminent British artists, each expressing their own unique style and with prices to suit all budgets; but despite that you’ll find no need for hushed whispers or be made to feel intimidated in this bright, welcoming space. Peter and Jane are extremely friendly and love to share their enthusiasm with all visitors – whether you know your art or just enjoy a browse. For the more informed, some of the ‘heavyweight’ names currently showing work in the gallery include David Curtis, Peter Brown, Douglas Gray, Hazel Soan and Luis Morris and the list goes on to encompass the very best figurative artists working today. “It is such a privilege to represent this group of artists, some of whom I consider to be the greats of our time. How wonderful to have them all showing here in Rutland rather than having to travel to London or far beyond to see them exhibit,” adds Peter. What makes the Peter Barker Gallery unusual is that as an acclaimed

painter himself, Peter is able to offer an unusually high level of professional empathy and insight when it comes to his fellow artists – all of whom he knows personally, which certainly helps when representing their work. “I consider myself very lucky to have made a living out of doing something I love, and now I’m even more fortunate to be surrounded by wonderful works of art by revered colleagues. In addition to some of the most celebrated painters, we also have some relatively lesser known, but incredibly talented artists’ work gracing our walls and our aim is to boost their reputation and get them the recognition they deserve.”

Well worth a visit… Look out for details of a special Christmas exhibition in the gallery to celebrate the festive season during December. The gallery can be found just off the A47, less than a two minute drive from Uppingham within the Welland Vale Garden Centre complex which hosts a number of interesting businesses to explore as well as a gorgeous bistro serving home-made food – thoroughly recommended. • Peter Barker Fine Art at Welland Vale, Glaston Road, Uppingham, Rutland LE15 9EU Tel: 01572 868460 or 07591 472228. HEALTH & BEAUTY

Healthy Hearing after a month’s trial you can re-visit Healthy Hearing and have your actual use analysed. With a record of exactly what environments you have actually been in over the last month, finely calibrated adjustments can be made accordingly.

Try it. Wear it. Love it

M

IKE Stanley, the Managing Director of Healthy Hearing, has a passion for getting the right solution for his customers, based on many years in the industry during which he has never ceased from searching out the best possible solutions in the market and also feeding his expertise back to the companies and technicians that develop hearing aids in order to be make them better still. This year a new product has come on the market, unique to Healthy Hearing, called Vista N, which is again transforming Healthy Hearing’s ability to satisfy their customers’ needs more precisely.

The Consultative approach All the skilled audiologists at Healthy Hearing adopt a highly consultative approach, recognising that one size definitely doesn’t fit all. “Our approach in a consultation,” Philip Barker, senior audiologist, explained, “is to allow all the time necessary to understand a customer’s needs, situation and what the best possible solution is for them. We never confine ourselves to a 15-minute appointment time, as others sometimes do. Above all, we want to identify what is right for each customer. And throughout the process we keep you fully informed. “Once we know a person’s particular needs

– for example, they want to hear better in noisy environments, or they want to hear peripheral devices more clearly - then we can advise on the optimal product. And specification level.”

What is Vista N? Vista is a new type of hearing aid that can be completely tailored to your unique individual needs, but can also be upgraded over time if your hearing needs change, as it is controlled by a highly sophisticated piece of software – but you can retain the hearing aid itself which you will have already grown accustomed to. A 6-monthly check-up will always ensure that your maximum hearing potential is realised. Vista N is produced by a leading Swiss hearing aid laboratory; but is absolutely unique to Healthy Hearing, one of the country’s leading independent audiologists - you will not find it anywhere else. It was developed in partnership with Healthy Hearing, using Mike Stanley’s expertise in the sector to produce a truly stateof-the-art and customisable product. The Vista is offered at five levels of specification, your choice depending on what exact hearing needs you have, from basic conversation right through to complex aural environments such as restaurants and cafés. As you move up the specifications, one especially nifty feature you can have is the self learning feature - called ‘Capture It All’ -

Try it: If a simple hearing test determines you’re a candidate for the Vista Flex:trial program, you’ll leave your appointment with trial hearing aids tailored to your exact hearing needs, which you can trial free for up to four weeks. Wear it: wear the hearing aids at work, while out playing or at home relaxing and discover the difference they can make. No matter where your life takes you, you can get a true sense of how hearing aids feel and work and how they will affect your everyday activities. Love it: At the end of the trial, you decide if you love them. If so, they’re yours to purchase. If not, you can walk away and owe absolutely nothing. The decision is yours. The days of picking the wrong hearing aid are well and truly over!

The Healthy Hearing expertise difference What makes Healthy Hearing so distinctive is the many years of experience of the audiologists; Mike Stanley and Suzanne Stevenson in Stamford, Philip Barker in Oakham - between them, they have more than 50 years of audiology experience to draw upon, putting them in another league from the high street chains. And once you have got the optimal hearing aid, you can rest assured with the lifetime support that Healthy Hearing offers. They will be with you on every step of your journey to better hearing, including home visits if required. • Healthy Hearing Ltd, Stamford Hearing Centre, No. 1 the Old Police House, Cliff Road, Stamford, Lincolnshire, PE9 1AB Tel: 01780 759133 Oakham Hearing Centre, 17b Gaol Street, Oakham, Rutland, LE15 6AQ Tel: 01572 759555 www.healthyhearing.co.uk STAMFORD LIVING NOVEMBER 2015

ACTIVITIES

Local Clubs & Societies

Each month we take a look at some clubs and societies and see what they are getting up to and why it might be fun to join

Stamford and District Local History Society

S

tamford and District Local History Society (S&DLHS) was founded in 2013 and is a member of the British Association for Local History. Spearheaded by the late John Plumb, the Society was formed to bring together the many individuals, groups and organisations that share an interest in the rich history of Stamford and its surrounding area. Its President, Professor Alan Rogers, and Chairman, Chris Davies, have, between them, authored several books and many other publications on Stamford. Meeting monthly between September and March at Barn Hill Methodist Church, S&DLHS stages lectures, presentations and exhibitions, arranges outings, and supports individual and group research. Topics covered in its talks have included Stamford’s role in the Cold War, recent archaeological discoveries, Stamford in 1913, St Leonard’s Priory, Victorian church restoration in Stamford and St Mary’s Street pubs. An exhibition commemorating the 100th anniversary of the outbreak of the First World War was mounted at the Arts Centre in June 2014. Books published by the Society include Stamford and World War I and Stamford and Magna Carta, while its archive encompasses the records and published works of its predecessor, the Stamford Survey Group. Members with specific local history interests, for example archaeology or industrial history, are encouraged to form sub-groups under their own leadership, to discuss and research their favoured subjects. The annual membership subscription of the Society, which provides reduced admission charges for meetings and visits as well as a copy of the annual journal, is £10 for individuals and £15 for two people living at the same address. The new season’s programme begins on 17 September 2015 with a talk by Sarah Wilson on Flag Fen. Meetings commence at 7.30pm. • Further information about the Society can be found at www.stamfordlocalhistorysociety.org.uk or on its Facebook page www.facebook. com/pages/Stamford-District-Local-History-Society/391521970960608). Better still, come along to a meeting and find out for yourself! Membership Secretary, Mike Sockett can be contacted at 16 Phillips Court, Stamford, PE9 2EE or by email on mmsockett@waitrose.com.

The National Trust A

Local member writes: Did you know that the National Trust has local Centres and Associations across the country, and that one of them is based in this area? This is the Peterborough & Stamford Association: we meet once a fortnight, on Wednesdays, from late autumn to early spring at the William Cecil Hotel, Stamford. Evening meetings are held from September till November from 7.30-9.30pm, and our afternoon meetings run from 2.30-4.30pm from December to March. At these events we have speakers who offer illustrated lectures on a wide variety of subjects – for example, antiques, music, jewellery and places. In addition we have two lunches, one in November and one in March (also with a speaker), and during the summer months we arrange day trips by coach or car – mainly to historic buildings, some of which are not usually open to the public. In April, a long-weekend coach holiday is organised for our members’ enjoyment. (Next year, Wiltshire). All this activity has one main aim – to generate enough money to provide items urgently needed by National Trust local properties and projects. In recent years we have donated towards improved lighting at Woolsthorpe Manor, a garden bench for Peckover House, covered the cost of coach trips for school children to Lyveden New Bield, contributed towards the purchase of Stoneywell, and helped to stop a toilet falling into the moat at Tattershall Castle – not as silly as it sounds, rabbits cause a lot of damage! • If you would like to join us, or to find out more, please contact our Membership Secretary David Tabor on 01778 424 943, or our Chairman Brenda Harper on 01406 330 475.

MOTORING NEWS

On the road Compiled by Jonathan Craymer

Bretton blues

Silver cars suffer the most damage According to ChipsAway the UK’s leading minor automotive paintwork repair company, almost a quarter of all repairs undertaken by them (24%) involve silver-coloured cars. Richard Dudley of ChipsAway in Stamford explains: “Silver may have the top spot because it’s so popular, and one of the down-sides is that repairers like me have to be a lot more careful to blend in the new paint so it matches the original.” ChipsAway has a special process which means only damaged areas need to be re-painted. “On the plus side, silver cars tend to show the dirt less, whereas owners of black cars frequently complain they show every speck,” he adds. In case you’re wondering, the other colours which seem to come off worst in a recent ChipsAway survey of cars they’ve tended to are: black (21%), blue (18%), grey (14%) and red (9%). White cars need least repairs (just 7%). Richard’s advice for keeping your car pristine? “Park it away from other cars in places like supermarket car parks. People who are most careless with their cars often park near the entrance to a supermarket, whereas it may be worth walking a little further from less crowded spots, to reduce the risk.” • www.chipsaway.co.uk/richarddudley

Has anyone, like me, been caught parking too long at Bretton Centre Peterborough? I realise car drivers should be encouraged to move on, making spaces available for others. But sometimes, to my way of thinking, three hours isn’t enough. The other day I gave my other half a lift to the church and en route we had breakfast at Costa, where I stayed on for a bit working on my laptop. After she came out, we did some shopping. It wasn’t until I got a letter from a private car park enforcement company called Euro Car Parks in London, telling me I had to pay a £90 fine (or £50 if I paid up quickly) that I realised I’d outstayed my welcome. There is an “appeals” procedure, but it worried me that going down that route might delay payment, resulting in the amount going up, so I paid up. But what if I’d innocently driven out of the car park, and returned almost immediately? Supposing I’d got half way home and remembered I’d forgotten something and nipped back into the Bretton Centre car park? You can’t do that, according to a lady at ECP, who told me there’s a “no vehicle return” of 120 minutes: “If you leave the car park you are not permitted to return until after the 120 minute no vehicle return time has lapsed.” Otherwise apparently you also get charged. As far as Bretton Centre is concerned, I certainly won’t be hanging around to browse after I’ve bought any essentials I need in future. I’ll be out of there. Sorry other retailers...

Touchline Heroes

With the Rugby World Cup just complete, Deborah Pennell meets up with a different genre of touchline hero. Those who provide some warmth and sustenance, for all of us whom have to endure a winter supporting children, friends and relatives on the edge of our local sports fields... The Little Soup Kitchen OWNER: RACHAEL KELLEY What make is your van and when was it converted to a catering/coffee van? It’s a 1976 Citroen Hvan, which I had converted in 2013. Does your van have a name and who is he/ she named after? The van is called Hugo. Where we bought him from there was a sign on the wall saying Honk for Hugo and the name just stuck. Tell me a little bit of history about you and why you decided to start running a van? I worked for Thomas Cook as a Product Manager for 25 years part of which involved travelling quite a bit to the USA. Whilst I was there, I visited Pier 39 in San Francisco where lots of restaurants were selling chowder from soup bowls made of sourdough bread. I loved this idea and thought it would be fun to start serving soup at outdoor events in the UK. So I took redundancy and started researching the business. The Little Soup Kitchen was founded. Everything I sell on the van is made by myself the soup, chillies, cakes, chutneys, coleslaw etc and I buy my ingredients from local suppliers What blend of coffee do you serve? Ue Coffee – it’s an Artisan coffee, wood roasted to order, bought in from Oxfordshire. I also use Jeeves and Jericho tea. If you had to choose a cake or biscuit to go with your coffee or tea, what do you think is the perfect combination?

Chocolate brownie with white chocolate chunks with a strong coffee; or Lemon Drizzle with breakfast tea. What is your best seller? Difficult question ….. The Veggie Chilli is always really popular. Butternut Squash Sweet Potato & Chilli Soup goes down well everywhere. Sandwich-wise, I make a Turkey Special with a choice of fresh breads from King’s Cliffe Bakery, homemade guacamole, turkey, bacon, tomato and rocket. And cake, probably Millionaire Shortbread or Lemon Drizzle. Have you ever served anyone famous from your van? Sir Mark Todd and William Fox Pitt at Rockingham Horse Trails and Stuart Pearce at BST Hyde Park. What’s the weirdest request you have ever had from a client? A sandwich with just coleslaw. Where is the favourite place to go with your van? The places I go are so varied and I love that variety but if I had to pick one it would be the markets. I love the banter with the other traders. Tell me about some of the events you cover… sporting, farmers’ markets, shows, weddings etc. I regularly attend the Thrapston and Oundle

Farmers’ Markets and the Thursday market in Oundle. I have worked at a few weddings; one involved serving tea, coffee and cakes outside the church whilst photographs were being taken. Last season we were serving bacon sandwiches, soup, teas and coffees at the local rugby club. I provide lunches for local classes and events such as the Thursday Oundle school recitals in St Peter’s Church, as well as various parties, Christmas markets and music festivals, Rockingham Horse Trials and The British Summertime Festival in Hyde Park. What is the biggest event you have ever worked at? The British Summertime Festival in Hyde Park. For the past 2 years we have provided cakes, teas and coffees in the VIP Summer Garden. On cold wet, windy days in the middle of winter do you sometimes wonder why you decided to run a quirky van and where in the world would you dream of being? Mmmmm? …..The Piazza San Marco in Venice drinking Espresso and eating pistachio biscotti What are your plans for the future? I want to divide the business and hope to start selling soup into local shops and farm shops and also wholesale to cafés, etc. I also want to concentrate on using Hugo for more events such as weddings, private parties, music festivals and classic car rallies.

What is the biggest event you have ever worked at? Rockingham Horse Trials On cold wet, windy days in the middle of winter do you sometimes wonder why you decided to run a quirky van and where in the world would you dream of being? Of course I do…… I dream of lying on a beach overlooked by the Blue Mountains of Jamaica, drinking a cup of its finest! What are your plans for the future? Lots of exciting ideas – Cuckoo Coffee, Cuckoo Cocktails and anything in between.

Kitschen The Cuckoo Coffee Company OWNER: KATE THAIN What make is your van and when was it converted to a catering/coffee van? It started life last year in Italy as a Fiat Piaggio lorry which was imported and converted in the UK Does your van have a name and who is he/ she named after? Yes, but it’s a bit rude! Tell me a little bit of history about you and why you decided to start running a van? I was spending a lot of time watching matches in a field far from a good coffee supply so I decided to do something about it. What blend of coffee do you serve? I have experimented with various coffees from well-known makes to small independent roasters in King’s Cross. At the moment I’m using a full-bodied blend with a chocolaty flavour. If you had to choose a cake or biscuit to go with your coffee or tea, what do you think is the perfect combination? Oooo – difficult but I think it’s hard to beat a really well chilled Mars Bar! What is your best seller? Real hot chocolate – I melt Belgian chocolates to make a ganache and then top it up with whipped steamed milk. Have you ever served anyone famous from your van? Do Brotherhood of Man count as famous? What’s the weirdest request you have ever had from a client? Seven sugars! Where is the favourite place to go with your van? Home after a big event! Tell me about some of the events you cover… sporting, farmers markets, shows, weddings etc Stamford Rugby Club, Food markets, Music Festivals, Equestrian events but basically anywhere there is a demand for a decent cup of coffee.

OWNER: SHARON TAIT What make is your van and when was it converted to a catering/coffee van? Citroen HY Van 1971. It was lovingly converted to a catering van in 2012 by Bingham Trailers, who installed the coffee machine and cooking equipment. They also very kindly put up the vintage wallpaper. Does your van have a name and who is he/ she named after? No, it doesn't have a name - I might have to do something about that! Tell me a little bit of history about you and why you decided to start running a van? I had been a carer for 20 years, looking after my daughter who has autism. I was keen to start work again and knew that I could fit the coffee van around school holidays and appointments. I am interested in food; how it is produced, creating recipes and menus, and eating it too, so the van allows me to indulge in that sense. I am also a bit of a coffee addict! What blend of coffee do you serve? The coffee is Espresso Blend No. 1, made of 97% Arabica Dominican, Brazilian and Guatemalan beans. It is a medium roast with an excellent crema and receives lots of compliments from our customers.

Tell me about some of the events you cover… sporting, farmers markets, shows, weddings etc I have catered at large agricultural shows, village fetes, music festivals, corporate events, sporting events, weddings, birthday parties and concerts. What is the biggest event you have ever worked at? In June 2014 Kitschen took part in Mobilisation Day at Kendrew Barracks. It was a huge event commemorating the centenary of the beginning of World War I, and attracted thousands of people. Kitschen looked great decked out in Union Jack bunting. We served complimentary Anzac biscuits and had a poster of Kitchener on the van asking "Do YOU need a coffee?" On cold wet, windy days in the middle of winter do you sometimes wonder why you decided to run a quirky van and where in the world would you dream of being? On a white sandy beach sipping Aperol Spritz, watching the sun go down. What are your plans for the future? I would like to use the van for collaborations with "guest chefs" and local food providers, to present workshops/cookery sessions to people who are interested in learning about food and cooking techniques. I would also like to expand my menu range; to include more street food, and to showcase the fantastic range of locally produced foods. And, of course, to keep on serving great coffee to Rutland. • If you are interested in hiring out any of the quirky little vans featured in this article then they can be contacted on: • The Little Soup Kitchen – Rachael Kelley 07807 119906 & Facebook • The Cuckoo Coffee Company – Kate Thain - 07713 622039 • Kitschen – Sharon Tait 07745 491121 - www.kitschenvan.co.uk

If you had to choose a cake or biscuit to go with your coffee or tea, what do you think is the perfect combination? My current favourite is blackberry and polenta cake, perfect for autumn. What is your best seller? A Cappuccino. My homemade flapjack is also very popular. Have you ever served anyone famous from your van? Lloyd Grossman had a coffee and a piece of my cardamom and rosewater cake - he was very complimentary. What’s the weirdest request you have ever had from a client? Butter in their Coffee! Where is the favourite place to go with your van? Anywhere in Rutland, especially if I have a view of the lake. STAMFORD LIVING NOVEMBER 2015

MUSIC

Strictly Ballroom Alastair McLachlan meets Stamford’s very own Orchestra

I

T’S almost 8.00pm on a dreary cold Thursday night in Stamford, and you’re standing outside the ballroom of the Stamford Arts Centre wondering why you came out and what on earth that dreadful noise is: squeals and squawks, the sound of animals in pain. Suddenly it goes quiet, and just as you decide on the pub instead of the show in the theatre that you’re already late for, you hear wonderful sounds. It’s an orchestra; they were tuning up, you realise. Now they’re playing what sounds like a minuet; bouncy, tuneful, even graceful. Perhaps there really is a ball on, and you’ve timetravelled to 18th century Stamford? You tip-toe through the foyer, squeeze the door open and peer in … The chandeliers are burning, but no Jane Austen costumes, no dancers, no ball. There is an orchestra, and apparently a conductor peering over his shoulder at you rather suspiciously. You shrink into a seat and listen. It’s the Stamford Chamber Orchestra rehearsing, a lady at the back tells you. They’re playing Haydn. ‘They often do. There’s a concert on Saturday. Isn’t it lovely?’ Why have forty or fifty musicians from Stamford and the neighbourhood gathered on a dreary winter night after work for a tough three hour rehearsal? And why has a successful young conductor from London who has worked with some of Europe’s top orchestras and conductors - legendary Bernard Haitink and Sir Roger Norrington among them braved the London evening rush-hour to knock them into shape and then drive the three hours home? ‘It's worth it,’ says Ben Palmer. ‘SCO is a wonderfully friendly and hardworking orchestra, and it just gets better and better. The players always rise to the challenge. I really enjoy working with them, particularly when we're playing Haydn.’ He has one unusual ambition: to conduct all of Joseph Haydn's 107 symphonies. ‘When I started to work my way through them I was astonished to realise how brilliant every single one is, whether or not it's a famous one with a nickname. At first it seemed it really would take my entire life to get

48

through them, but by our November concert I shall be past half way! We've done a fair few together, and I'm happy to say that the players seem to enjoy them (almost) as much as I do.’ And audiences do as well: it’s not often you hear chuckles in a concert, but SCO concerts are informal, friendly events where laughter is allowed, children welcome, and you might get to chat to some of the orchestra or the conductor in the interval. And when there was a sudden unexpected (deliberate) hiccup in the middle of that minuet, they laughed. The orchestra plays music by the composers you would probably expect: the great classics, plus a few you might not. Schubert’s ‘Unfinished’ this season, with Schumann, Beethoven, Mozart and, of course, Haydn. Concertos by Brahms, Haydn and Mozart, string music by Elgar, Janacek, Dowland and Vaughan Williams’ haunting Thomas Tallis Variations. And Ben’s arrangement for string orchestra of Schubert’s String Quintet. He’s also a composer, of striking and very approachable music. There are local star soloists like harpist Eleanor Turner, and this year brilliant Uppingham violinist Freya Goldmark plays Mozart’s 3rd Concerto. Twin soloists from London play Brahms’ passionate Double Concerto. What marks the SCO out from other ensembles? Its conductors, who frequently go on to great things, Adrian Brown and Andrew Constantine among them. Ben Palmer has been in post since 2010, and currently also directs the Orchestra of St Paul's, and has worked with the London Mozart Players and the Hallé orchestra

among others, and with Sir Roger Norrington, a leader of the ‘authentic’ approach to classical music - playing it as it probably would have been played when it was written. The SCO plays most of its repertoire without vibrato. ‘No orchestras anywhere played with continuous vibrato until 100 years ago,’ says Ben. ‘And I think pure tone sounds ravishingly beautiful, so I encourage all my orchestras to play in this way.’ It certainly sounds good in rehearsal. The orchestra gathers in the Ballroom from all points of the compass. About 80% of the orchestra is local, like rehearsal cake-maker Sara Morris and treasurer Helen Amos: fixer Terry Noble is from Market Deeping (he ensures there are players for each concert). Everyone plays because they love doing it. ‘The concerts are thrilling,’ says leader Anja Smith, who teaches at several local schools. ‘It's wonderful to see the audience enjoying listening to the music as much as we do playing it!’ Terry finds Ben Palmer ‘inspiring’, others enjoy the imaginative programming, and also the fact that twelve hours of rehearsals per concert keep standards high. ‘Lots of private practice goes on too,’ said one. • Stamford Chamber Orchestra plays Schubert, Brahms and Schumann on Saturday November 14th in the Ballroom, Stamford Arts Centre. Stubborn Verrucae Given the Needle

H

ave you got a verruca? Had it years? Tried every product known to man? “Talking about your verruca is not the most glamorous subject!” says Podiatrist Sue Arnold. “They are painful, unsightly and people are very embarrassed to admit having them,” she continues. However, Sue has got the perfect solution for you. A technique called Dry Needling. InStep Foot Clinic is one of the few practices in the UK to offer this effective procedure for your verrucae. It is believed to work by destroying the infected skin cells which then creates a controlled inflammatory response and stimulates the body’s immune system to destroy the virus. This treatment has been successfully used by practitioners worldwide for over 40 years. It differs from most other treatments as it requires only one, occasionally two, applications and a small dressing for 48 hours post operatively. You can shower and resume most normal activities (not heavy sport) just 24 hours following the procedure. Needling is carried out painlessly under a local anaesthetic. The verruca is punctured (with a small sterile needle) multiple times so

that the viral particles are exposed to the subcutaneous tissue beneath the skin, where the body is rich in immune regulators. This triggers a localised cell-mediated response, which can stimulate the immune system to recognise and destroy the virus. Treatment of only one verruca is required, even where there are many lesions, as spontaneous regression often occurs in all verrucae following the needling procedure. If you want a single treatment with a 70% success rate, then Dry Needling is perfect for you. Cost of the treatment is £300; should a second treatment be required this is included in that price. • Make your appointment for an assessment with Sue Arnold today by phoning 01780 783982. ARCHITECTURE

Hidden in plain sight I never fail to be astonished by the number of churches in England. Even the tiniest village can boast a magnificent place of worship. From tombs, brasses, graffiti and pews, they chart the hopes, fears and beliefs of people long forgotten. For me, no feature illustrates this more than wall-paintings. By Rachel Morley

HE joy of Art and Design has been an intrinsic part of Christopher’s life since his early days as a frequent art prize winner at school. After a traditional Art School Foundation and postgraduate studies, a long career in education culminated in his appointment as Head of 3D Studies at college level. A resident of Stamford for over twenty one years, Christopher was focused on Ceramics and Theatre Design until a visit to a gem cutter in Jaipur catapulted him into the world of jewellery. Selected as outstanding new designer in 2010 by the British Jewellery Association, within the year he was selected to exhibit with the most dynamic independent designers in the UK at the prestigious Goldsmiths’ Fair. Further recognition of his talent came with an entry in Vogue Magazine’s “New Designers”. Christopher’s designs have a timeless geometric quality with strong architectural themes that combine the fresh white tones of silver with the rich luxuriance of 18ct yellow gold. He creates bold opulent cocktail rings beautifully set with diamonds. His most recent range of glamorous pendants is now exciting great interest amongst his established clients. As Christopher says his jewellery is “Art to be worn”.

CONTEMPORARY ARTS

JohnBangay-Stamford’s HeritageArtist You may have met John Bangay drawing during the Georgian Festival weekend or seen him filming around the town recently. Jean Orpin and Sue Lee met him to discover more about his work

J

OHN, now living in Stamford, grew up in Lincolnshire at Cranwell, where his father was Director of Music at the RAF College. He went to school at Langley near Norwich where his art master was an idiosyncratic and inspired teacher. When he was short of money he would go and draw a scene in the street and sell it. He went to Art College in Lincoln in the nineteen seventies. This was a time when drawing and painting were unfashionable and more experimental art was the vogue. After he completed his course at Lincoln he took a photography course in London and subsequently worked in Fleet Street covering sport and entertainment. John went back home to Lincoln at weekends and decided that he would emulate his first art master by drawing scenes in the street which people could buy. This was successful so he decided to move to Lincoln to start a business selling his pictures to tourists. He was fortunate that Sir Hugh Casson introduced him to Denis Flanders, whose book ‘Britannia’ was another source of inspiration. He earned enough from his artwork to buy his first house and then went on to take a Masters degree in Design at Leicester University. The subject of his thesis was Lincolnshire windmills, which has been an enduring interest. He accepted a post as a part time teacher and then full time at West Anglia College, King’s Lynn in the photography department. He went on to be Head of Art at Grantham and at Stamford College from 1990 to 2008. After that, he was Head of Art at Huntingdon until he decided to

retire and become a full time artist once again. His chosen medium is pen and ink and his subject historic buildings. He uses a crow quill pen (like a mapmaker) which if pressed can make a line thicker and is versatile. He uses modern inks which do not dry quickly. The drawings are very detailed and a drawing of a cathedral can take three weeks. Unlike a photographer an artist can remove a foreground to give a clearer picture of the main building. You can see this effect in the local pictures on this page and it has meant that he has been commissioned to draw places like York Minster and St Paul’s Cathedral which you can see on his website. At the moment John is making videos including one of Stamford and one about Peterborough Cathedral. The cathedrals at Norwich, Lincoln, York and Ely are in the pipeline. John has researched and presented the video and Ben Connell his colleague has been responsible for the photography. The Stamford one is excellent and well worth watching (on John’s website www. englishheritageartist.co.uk) for it is historically accurate and well presented. In 12 minutes he gives a very clear account of Stamford’s history. The aim is to have a website which will encourage visitors to come and see the places for themselves and purchase copies of John’s work. He has friends in China and has visited there several times drawing along the way. He is travelling there shortly to draw pictures of temples and other important buildings in preparation for a book. PROPERTY

Moving on UPP Antonia Scott catches up with David Crooke of UPP Property Agents

D

AVID Crooke, Managing Director of UPP Property Agents, has recently introduced a monthly Rutland and Stamford property newsletter which is being delivered to the local area to keep residents updated on the current state of the market. It will become a significant resource for existing landlords, potential investors looking to purchase a property or homeowners considering selling their own home. Having been in the industry for over 10 years, David’s depth of knowledge of the property market is extensive and UPP is fast becoming the local authority when it comes to market trends in both rental and sales information. There is also an online blog (www.rutlandandstamford propertyblog.co.uk) which is chatty and easy to read. Some of the articles posted on the blog so far have been inspired by questions David has been approached for his opinion on recently by existing clients, potential landlords and homeowners. Clicking through the blog’s article archive, David’s topics are varied; he regularly discusses which of the latest buy-to-let deals in the area he has his eye on and why - giving examples of who the property would suit and an achievable rental valuation, whether to extend an existing home and by how much it will affect the asked rental price, advice on how much (or how little!) renovation should be done to best prepare a new property for a tenancy, which villages are most sought after, and most interestingly by how much a well performing village school affects house prices. Did you know that homeowners near to Langham Primary School, for example, get a little property value windfall of approximately £6,400 – just for it being in the ‘right location’? Even if you’re not in the market place for selling your home just yet (and even if you feel like everyone else around you is selling up and moving on, then don’t worry you’re not alone, here’s another of David’s local property facts: Stamford homeowners move every 11.9 years), the Rutland and Stamford Property Blog would be a great place for keeping your finger on the property pulse. Plus, we all love talking about “bricks and mortar!”

Moving onwards and UPPwards Adrian McCarthy joined UPP as Sales Director earlier this year and has many years experience within Stamford, Rutland and Leicestershire. He was excited to be involved in setting up the first local estate agency to offer such a unique three-tiered approach that cuts out the rigid, old-fashioned fee structure that most agents still work with. Reflecting on the prominence of internet led sales, UPP has adopted a new approach to enable a more personalised and effective sales option to a far wider range of customers. Appreciating that a ‘one size fits all’ fee structure is no longer desirable as not every customer’s needs are identical has enabled UPP to put every client first. The 3 simple sales options are: 1. Sell for £399 upfront and no VAT 2. Sell for £199 upfront and 0.5% on completion and no VAT 3. No fee upfront and 1.2% of the sale price on completion and no VAT

Adrian has had a positive uptake on all three options, proving that Stamford and Rutland have a wide customer demographic with varying individual needs, of which UPP are able to provide a great service for. Adrian reflected on this strong demand by saying, “The encouraging feedback we’ve already received is proof that the need was there for homeowners wanting to ‘tailor make’ the sale of their property, depending on the level of involvement in the sales process they wanted, with a realistic fee to match. We’ve had new

instructions across all types of property, in all areas of the market and by homeowners with very different personal circumstances. Recent examples include a timber built holiday lodge at Tallington Lakes, a Victorian terraced home on Vine Street in Stamford that sold in just 24 hours for over the asking price, and an immaculately presented 5 bedroom detached modern family home. We firmly believe in putting our customers first by offering a bespoke service that matches their individual needs.” The new three tiered sales package service, the blog and the property market newsletters are all further examples of UPP’s trail blazing and proactive market leading approach. David and Adrian are determined to provide what homeowners in Stamford and Rutland have long been asking for. It seems the only way is UPP. STAMFORD LIVING NOVEMBER 2015

Helen Walmsley-Johnson Rutland based journalist Helen Walmsley-Johnson was working as a PA at the Guardian Newspaper when she found herself having a rant about the plight of the increasingly disgruntled generation of ‘invisible’ women aged fifty plus. Luckily a canny editor was listening and Helen was asked to write a column for the paper on the state of being a single woman navigating the highway of middle-aged style and body image in Britain today. The column was so immediately and eagerly consumed by readers that Helen is now a successful freelance journalist having just launched her first book ‘The Invisible Woman – Taking on the Vintage Years’. Amander Meade spoke to the author to find out more about the myths, magic and manipulation of life after fifty

Y

OUR column clearly struck a chord with readers – how did you react when it became such a hit? Surprise. I wrote it anonymously for the first two years because I wasn’t sure it would be any good (that’s why my alter-ego is the Invisible Woman). When the column topped sixty thousand readers I realised we were on to something and everything was going to be all right.

In the same way as Bridget Jones became a voice for the singleton female twenty years ago, do you now feel a responsibility to speak out for your generation and is that scary or something you relish? I do, and it’s something I enjoy hugely. So many women have read the book and got in touch to say we’re living parallel lives and they thought they were the only one who was experiencing x, y or z. Shouting about what it’s like to be this age helps remove both the stigma (we are SO ageist in the UK) and the fear of ageing for subsequent generations. I have three daughters and three granddaughters so I don’t want them to face the nonsense we have to put up with. How has the book been received and how has your success changed your life now that you are no longer invisible? To my immense relief the book has been very well received, which means at long last I have a degree of security. I felt quite protective of it when it was published – it felt a bit like chucking my child overboard to see if it could swim. As for being visible, I have now completely lost my stage fright, which is the most gloriously liberating thing. Although, for someone who has spent almost all her life supporting other people, it’s an odd thing to be suddenly leading from the front instead of pushing from behind. What is your single best piece of advice for women of any age but particularly those approaching retirement age? Say ‘yes’ – if you don’t do it you’ll never know. There’s a quote that’s been picked up from my book, “carpe the **** out of the diem”. That. What has the reaction been like here in Rutland? Do you think of the county as home and what do you love about the region? In all the years I spent in London I never stopped thinking about Rutland although I wasn’t sure I’d ever make it back. When I tell people I’ve moved back up here the next question is usually “where’s that?” I brought up my daughters in a house two miles away from where I live now – I feel I belong here. As for reaction to the book, I honestly don’t know – I moved in and had to put myself under house arrest straight away to finish writing it, or miss the deadline. It was a close run thing. What comes next for you? Another book! It’s a novel I began incubating about four years ago, encouraged by a dear friend who has since died. It feels like exactly the right time to pick it up again now but writing fiction is a very different discipline to what I’ve just done. Still, if you don’t do it… • You can find Helen’s book, The Invisible Woman – Taking on the Vintage Years, in bookshops £10.99 or order through www.bookshop.theguardian.com

Majestic mountain scenery combines with excellent downhill and crosscountry options and a cosy and sophisticated restaurant and après ski scene. South Tyrol is also something of a secret ski spot, waiting to be discovered, it is definitely the place to come to escape crowded slopes and lift queues. A gourmand’s paradise, stunning Alta Badia hosts ‘a taste for skiing’ each year. The most awaited gourmet event on the slopes, it’s a celebration of great skiing and delicious gourmet food. The concept is simple; it is just finger or street food on the slopes, refined by some world class chefs. Visitors can ski from hut to hut, enjoying delicious food in a truly special location. The chefs will dip their fingers into the traditional cuisine of their region and their recipes will contain only the very best of Italian produce. The result: original dishes steeped in the long tradition of Italian cuisine. After so much delicious food, skiers will need somewhere to work it off. hadija Kalifa, the founder of this rapidly growing cleaning company, explains: “Having entered into the cleaning industry with limited experience and knowledge in 2014 after the birth of my daughter, a lot of research was required, and it wasn’t until we had three regular weekly customers that the ‘Eco- friendly’ premise began. “After cleaning for a lady who introduced me to the world of ‘E-cloths’ I knew that I needed to explore the Eco-friendly route more thoroughly. Now, having been trading for several months, we have tried and tested all Eco-friendly products against non Ecofriendly products and have found that they clean just as well, cleaning 99.9% of bacteria and we feel better about using them. We have received amazing feedback from our customers and have all 5* reviews on our Facebook page. We thank everyone for their support and appraisal, it means the world to us.“ In October the company began commercial cleaning for a children’s nursery in Stamford that fully supports the eco- friendly ethos. There is also a plan to invest in an electrical vehicle to enhance the eco-friendly ethos. And the company will shortly be advertising for dedicated, like-minded cleaning experts in the coming weeks, so please keep an eye out. • Opal & Pearl, Tel: 01733 590 031 Mob: 07542 422310

Stars best shop awards reveal finalists in 2015 P

oze Lingerie, founded by Zoe Phillips, has just celebrated its first anniversary; and to cap a great year has been nominated for the national Stars Finalist Awards. 94 finalists have made it through to this year’s Awards (from a total of 460 nominations) being held on Thursday 12th November at a Gala Ceremony at the UnderGlobe in Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre in London. This 7th edition of Stars will see the presentation of 12 national retail awards and a Supplier of the Year Award (which is voted on by the retailers and etailers). Stars is unique in the UK retail award scene as stores, shops and retail sites cannot nominate themselves but are put forward by the brands on the jury: it is by reputation, good business practice and good service that the outlets gain a place on the finalist roster. Music at St Martin’s M

usic at St Martin’s was formed some twelve years ago to show off the fine acoustics of this historic church in Stamford, and to raise funds for the upkeep of the building. Year by year it has contributed £1,000 or so but last year – the 10th anniversary of its foundation, and helped by a sponsorship scheme launched with the help of patron, Miranda Rock – the magnificent sum of £4,500 was raised and donated towards this year’s major appeal aimed at repairing the roof and installing much-needed kitchen and toilet facilities. Music at St Martin’s is announcing its 2016 Season which will be opened on Saturday 12th March by Piers Adams and David Wright recorders & harpsichord (of “Red Priest” fame) and will close on Sunday afternoon 20th November 2016 when the large sound of the Rutland Big Band will fill the church. In between there will be concerts by rising star James Newby tenor, young pianist Reuben Goldmark and the Cecilian Singers, as well as a special concert by YCAT artist Sean Shibe guitar. MSM will also continue its tradition of welcoming choral singers to a day’s “Workshop”; and, during August, a series of lunchtime recitals will be presented every Thursday for the enjoyment of visitors as well as Stamford residents. Music at St Martin’s welcomes sponsorship – an opportunity to bring a party of friends to your chosen concert – and offers Season Tickets at a bargain price for the whole season. • For more information and a detailed brochure email: musicatstmartins@gmail.com or Tel: 07990 841122

The Family Home and Inheritance Tax Kerry Hilliard, Partner at Stephenson Smart accountancy firm in Peterborough, explains the changes to Inheritance Tax and what it means to your family home

T

he government has announced the introduction of an additional nil rate band for Inheritance Tax, making it easier for most families to pass on the family home without a tax charge. The additional band will apply where parents leave the family home to one or more of their children or grandchildren. It will be phased in starting at £100,000 from 2017-18, rising to £175,000 in 2020-21. The new nil rate band is in addition to the current nil rate band of £325,000 which will remain frozen until at least 2020. The additional band can only be used in respect of one residential property which has, at some point, been a residence of the deceased. Buy to let properties will not qualify unless they have been a residence at some point during ownership. Any unused additional nil rate band may be transferred to a surviving spouse or civil partner, though not everyone will benefit from the additional IHT free allowance. Estates with a net value of more than £2 million are subject to a tapered withdrawal of the allowance and so may not qualify or will only qualify at a reduced rate. • For more information and planning advice on inheritance tax contact Stephenson Smart on 01733 343275 or go to www.stephensonsmart.com

Full Circle for the ‘School of Arts’ with Wildcats

Many Stamford residents were dismayed by the closure of the town’s museum in 2011, not least because of the proud and fascinating history of the building itself. Having lain empty and deteriorating for four years, the building has been granted a new lease of life by one of the region’s most successful and expanding businesses – Wildcats Theatre School and Post 16 Academy. Amander Meade meets Wildcats Founder and Principal, Caz Dolby to find out more Pictures by Elli Dean Photography Historical information provided by Philippa Massey FACTS ABOUT THE BUILDING….THE STORY SO FAR Originally commissioned as a Technical School, the building was designed by Stamford architect, John Charles Traylen who trained in London, helping John Johnson with the building of both the Alexandra Palaces. In 1884 he bought the architect Edward Browning’s practice in Broad Street. The building was constructed in 1895 by local builder John Woolston. – ‘School of Arts’ is chiselled into the stone above the door. The Technical School building was designed primarily to harmonise with the surrounding Georgian architecture on Broad Street, which accounts for the symmetrical rows of key stoned windows, but there are elements of late seventeenth century design, particularly the cupola on the roof, and the decorated arabesques around the doorway. The Technical School opened in September, 1895 and provided varied courses including woodwork, domestic science, dressmaking, typewriting, French, laundry work, and drawing and painting. Groups from local schools were taught practical subjects here with the emphasis on giving students the skills required to hold down a job. It also catered for those who wanted to continue their education beyond secondary school, but could not afford a university education. The school continued in this way until its closure in 1966/7, when the College of Further Education (now New College, Stamford) was opened on Drift Road. After this it was briefly occupied as a meeting place for the Salvation Army, and then the Church of Jesus Christ of the Latter Day Saints, before the Museum moved from the upper level of the Library to these premises in 1980 before finally closing in June 2011. LOOKING TO THE FUTURE… Searching for a suitable creative space to expand her theatre schools, Caz Dolby visited the site in June 2014 and immediately saw the potential. “Lots of people had advised me to take a unit on an industrial estate but

72

I knew I wanted something more special and the history of the building was beguiling – especially since my husband’s grandfather attended the old college. Despite the state of disrepair, the building had all the space we needed but required new electrics, heating and floors as well as new kitchen and bathroom facilities.” South Kesteven District Council agreed to make the building safe and sound and following significant financial investment, the Wildcats team began a summer of extremely hard work. Unbelievably in only three weeks, the transformation was made in time to receive students for the autumn term. Painted and decorated throughout, the building now boasts a study centre, performance space and a brand new dance studio. “It was a whirlwind but we used local tradesmen and had all kinds of help from students, teaching staff and volunteers,” explains Caz. In early September the building had its official opening by the six students who were at the very first Wildcats class ten years ago in the Arts Centre and who are now at students at the Post 16 Academy. “The response from students has been phenomenal; we have a very disciplined ethos and they now feel they have a place to call ‘home’. This building has made such a difference and we already have plans to expand our offering which will appeal especially to students who cannot afford a private theatre school – very much in keeping with the original spirit of the building. We are here to stay.” • Contact Wildcats Theatre School and the Post 16 Academy Tel: 01780 762000 www.wildcatstheatreschool.co.uk

Just an hour away by road or rail, this thriving Essex town has a host of independent shops, scores of beautiful buildings and a fascinating history. Fiona Cumberpatch paid a visit

A day out in Saffron Walden A

SUNNY Saturday morning in Saffron Walden and the Market Place is buzzing with life. A huge fruit and vegetable stall selling the season’s first crop of walnuts, squash and English apples, an antiques stand spilling pretty wares in every direction, and, most noticeably, a fresh fish stall complete with alfresco seafood bar, where punters sit on stools, tucking into platters of glistening shellfish including Maldon oysters and Cromer crab, washed down with white wine. The Market Place is the hub of this town of 15,000 people, and has been since the 13th century. There are plenty of new additions to the scene, of course, including a particularly handsome white and gold Italianate library building, completed in 1848 and designed by Richard Tress which was once the Corn Exchange. But where ever you stroll in Saffron Walden there is a sense of the town’s colourful history and buildings beautiful enough to stop you in your tracks. In the 1230s, the Earls of Essex set out

74

an ambitious town plan with a grid system of streets, a new market place and a church. These elements can be seen in the town centre today, and create a heart to the community. By the late 1300s, the area around Walden had begun to grow the saffron crocus, and by the early 1500s it had become the centre of the saffron industry in this country. It was so important that the town adopted the name ‘Saffron Walden’ and the legacy of this is reflected in the distinctive timber framed buildings of this time and the largest parish church in Essex, which was completed in 1525. The saffron industry declined in the 17th and 18th century but prosperity returned in the Victorian era with the growth of the malting and brewing industries. Farming was also at the centre of the town’s economy - and it is surprising how rural and beautiful the town’s surroundings

Audley End House are, given its proximity to London and Cambridge. If you visit by train, the nearest stop is Audley End, as the town branch line of the railways was abandoned in 1964. The short taxi ride takes you through some stunning countryside, past Audley End house and gardens. This is an area which inspired the artists Eric Ravilious, Edward Bawden and their circle, who settled in the Essex countryside in the 1930s and often represented the rural landscape in their work.

What to see in Saffron Walden The Cross Keys A 15th century timber framed house and shop with later additions. It sits at the corner of King Street and High Street, one of the town’s main shopping thoroughfares. Pop in for hot chocolate, mulled wine or a light lunch. It’s especially cosy in the winter months.

Shops to visit

Market Place On Tuesdays and Saturdays, the market fills the square with stalls. You can find artisan bread and cakes, a hat stall, hot sausages, crepes and coffee, the aforementioned fish stall, olives and Italian charcuterie, plants, flowers, organic fruit and veg, and lots more.

Fry Art Gallery and Bridge End Garden People who discover this gallery are hooked – although unfortunately it is closed between October and April. Although small, it houses a collection of works by the Great Bardfield group of artists who settled in the Essex countryside of the 1930s. They include the now hugely popular Eric Ravilious, and Edward Bawden. The gallery was built in 1856 by Francis Gibson to house his personal art collection, and inherited by his daughter Elizabeth Fry. The gallery sits at the entrance to Bridge End Garden, open to the public year round, and which include a Dutch Garden, rose garden and kitchen garden, wilderness area, maze and lawn with summerhouse. Well worth a visit, even on a chilly winter day, and the Fry Art Gallery is a must in season.

Church Street Gallery A gorgeous little gallery specialising in prints, paintings, ceramics and homewares. I spotted work by Celia Hart, James Dodds, Neil Bousfield and Jenny Portlock, as well as wallpaper by Mark Hearld. Print makers are especially well represented here. 17 Church Street. Tel: 01799 522947

Though there are chain stores in the high street, there are plenty of quirky, individual shops which are ideal for Christmas shopping. Try Arts Decoratifs, vintage jewellery specialists, for a tiny shop stuffed with sparkly treasures and objets trouvees. (The Cockpit, off Market Hill). Reeds (20 Church Street) is an antique hunters paradise, a vast space full of furniture, china, rustic items and paintings at affordable prices. If you love designer fashion, Anna (19 High Street) stocks beautiful collections and covetable cashmere. Oka (15 Church Street) offers colourful, ethnic-inspired homewares with a bit of bling. Potty Moos (18 -20 High Street) has a beautiful vintage-inspired Christmas shop, and rummagers will love The Mad Hatters Vintage Emporium on the opposite side of the road. If you’re ready for afternoon tea with toasted crumpets or home made scones, try Kim’s Tea and Coffee House at 5 Hill Street with a view over to the town bandstand. There’s a great selection of home made cakes and connoisseur’s tea.

Myddylton Place A Grade 1 listed building and one of the finest medieval buildings in the town. It was built as a combined shop, warehouse and home in the 1490s. There is a lovely doorway into Bridge Street and a carved dragon post on the corner. Museum and Castle ruins A particularly family friendly museum, housed in one of the oldest purpose built museum buildings in the country. It’s a great place to delve further into the history of the saffron trade, and to find out more about the buildings in the town, and how they were made (the distinctive decorative plasterwork called pargeting is explained, for example). There are plenty of interactive and imaginative displays. The museum is next to the ruins of Walden Castle, built by Geoffrey de Mandeville, 3rd Earl of Essex, in the 1130s or 40s. All that remains are the ruins of the keep, in flint and mortar, but the line of the inner and outer bailey helped created the shape of the town centre today. Museum Street. Tel 01799 510333 www.saffronwaldenmuseum.co.uk

Castle Street Most of the timber framed houses here date from around 1500. There are lots of examples of ancient and modern pargeting, a decorative waterproof plastering technique which sometimes gives the houses the appearance of beautiful pale iced cakes! • Saffron Walden is accessible by rail, direct from Peterborough station. Alight at Audley End. Taxis run regularly to and from the town. Walden Cabs, tel: 01799 500500 is reliable and fares are around £6 - £7. There is also an hourly bus service to the town centre from the station.

Brand design is about creating differences and changing beliefs. It is a critical trust-builder in any marketing endeavour. And trust is the catalyst in every buying decision – the very cornerstone of modern marketing. People fall in love with a brand when they feel an emotional connection. UPDATES

Art Pop-Up announces new artworks for Stamford Stamford-based arts organisation Art Pop-Up has announced 2 new artworks are to be given to Stamford on permanent loan; and a new, unusual exhibition space is being created in the town centre

T

wo new artworks were commissioned as part of this summer’s Arts Festival, funded by Arts Council England through the National Lottery. The beautiful ‘Found in the Fields Triptych’ by Kathryn Parsons is being permanently loaned to Stamford Hospital for display in the main corridor. The work is inspired by local poet, John Clare, whose writings express his intimate observations of nature. Kathryn’s finely hand-modelled porcelain focuses on texture, structure and forms - the layered platelets of lichen from Royce Wood and Lolham Bridges and the bold architectural plants of Swaddywell. Kathryn noted “The porcelain’s fragile yet long-lasting qualities echo those of Clare himself and I think it particularly apt the work should find a home at the hospital”. The second work illustrates Stamford’s Stone heritage and pays tribute to a little known local champion, Alan Dawn (1923 – 2010), whose nationally recognised work in geology and palaeontology saw him receive several awards. Many of Alan’s important geological finds are on display at Peterborough Museum. He also developed the Stamford Stone Trail which informed many elements of the painting, including several of the town’s celebrated landmarks. The artwork by Jason Duckmanton will be permanently displayed in the town centre. Art Pop-Up is also launching the ‘ART windows’ this month. Superdrugs’ five Georgian windows on Ironmonger Street in the town centre will exhibit vinyl prints on the panes. APU director, Sam Roddan said “This is a

J Duckmanton Stamford Stone Heritage blank, unused space so we are thrilled to be allowed to use it to add further colour and interest to the town centre and show some really great artwork by local artists.” The first work to be shown is a series of intricate nature paintings, drawing and collages by Julie Reid (through to January 2016). Julie is also hosting an Open Studio event in her studio and stunning gardens in Peterborough on Saturday 21st and Sunday 22nd November, for more details please email enquire@juliereid.co.uk

A counselling service specifically for So how will you know if counselling is right for you? young people and young adults now available at The Broad Street Practice About Vanessa Brown

Going to counselling can feel like a very big step and it takes courage. You may be unsure about it. The best way to decide is to find out more about it.

What is Counselling?

Sometimes we all have problems that are worrying. Think of a confusing jigsaw when the pieces are difficult to match together. Talking about a problem in counselling is like sorting out all the pieces so we can begin to build a picture that makes more sense to us.

How does Counselling work?

It can be difficult to talk to people about things that are making us anxious. A counsellor is trained to listen to you very carefully; they will not judge you or tell you what to do. Having thoughts, feelings and worries listened to, clarified and understood by someone who is not directly involved can be hugely beneficial. Often, people find working with a counsellor in a confidential setting and at a regular time, enables them to build a trusting relationship within which to understand themselves better, to gain insight and self-awareness, and to develop new strategies for living.

What kinds of things do people talk about in Counselling?

Whatever matters to them. Whatever is worrying for them. It could be about lots of different things. Here are some examples of problems and some thoughts and feelings that you may have. I feel angry but I don’t know why: I’m worried because I keep feeling like I want to lash out at people. I can’t control myself. I am anxious a lot of the time and stuff keeps going round and round in my head: I’m tired of worrying about friends/going out/what I look like/whether I am good enough. Feelings about myself: Sometimes I don’t understand how I feel or why I feel like I do. I just don’t feel right.

Vanessa Brown is a qualified counsellor, and a registered member of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP), which is the UK’s leading body for talking therapies. As a member of the BACP she adheres to their Ethical Framework for Good Practice. She believes that although there is plenty of attention paid to the “external” aspects of young people’s lives, many young people become isolated in their own internal worlds, the world of feelings, thoughts and beliefs. She has specialised in working with young people and young adults, and regularly works with issues such as relationship and family issues, self-harming behaviour, suicidal thoughts, anger, anxiety, depression, and eating disorders. You can find out more about counselling on Vanessa’s website www. vanessabrown.counselling. co.uk or the Broad Street Practice website www. thebroadstreetpractice.co.uk You can contact her for a free confidential enquiry on 07470 248611, or email her on contact @vanessabrown. counselling.co.uk

CHARITIES

TheMustardSeedproject In 2008, following a safari holiday in Kenya, Rita and Geoff Fowler who live just to the east of Stamford, visited an informal school in a Mombassa slum. They could not believe what they saw, two young men trying to teach with no resources in an appalling building. They could not walk away when they had skills to offer as Rita was a qualified nurse and primary school teacher and Geoff a civil engineer with lots of experience in the not-for-profit sector

E

ARLY in 2009 the couple returned to Mgongeni. They knew that they wanted to help but needed more information. The enthusiastic village elders suggested a public meeting where the community could explain their needs. As is common in most of Africa’s poor communities the problems are complex and it soon became obvious that they had an enormous task ahead of them. People told Geoff and Rita that they needed good schools for their children, clean water, work and healthcare. They explained that, although primary education had been free in Kenya since 2003, there had been no new money from the government; resulting in classes of 80 to 100. Importantly, government education could only be accessed by those who could afford uniform, books, exams and who were able to pay for pre-primary education, the equivalent of Key Stage 1. This had resulted in a lot of informal schools with unqualified teachers. Many children were being denied education by poverty. After a generally productive trip the couple returned home to think things though. GETTING STARTED In September 2009 they again returned to Kenya, armed with some teaching resources and this time set up Miche Bora Primary School with just 17 poor children and two teachers. The children were hungry, having come to school without breakfast; but a nutritious porridge programme soon sorted that out. When they realised that only one of their two teachers was qualified, they organised for the other to receive in-service teacher training to gain her certificate. At the same time they were looking at the other issues in the community; and over the course of the next six years they have done their best to resolve as many of these as they can. They spend two to three months each year working in Kenya split into twice yearly visits. Rita mostly works on the school and Geoff tries to resolve the issues in the community. To date they have arranged for the council to dig two large soakaways to deal with severe flooding, they have dug a well to provide clean water and help prevent water-borne diseases, obtained 3,000 mosquito nets (many still die each year of malaria), one for every family in the community; and provided two groups of women with health training. In

80

October they set up a clinic in the school for their children, their parents and their siblings, about 1,000 people. EXPANDING FACILITIES The school has now grown to 200 children and will have 225 in January at the start of the new school year. The children are taught by enthusiastic, well qualified teachers in classes of 25. Rita does additional teacher training during her twice yearly visits. There is now a full feeding programme and their healthy children are making fantastic academic progress. They make sure every child reaches his or her potential including their three profoundly deaf children. They have built phase one of their own building and hope to complete as soon as funds allow. Women are responsible for the family; many are single mums and are struggling to feed their children. Mustard Seed has delivered business training to over 200 women and set up a micro-finance fund providing loans to help them to set up or grow their own businesses. Many women do not go to school, so Mustard Seed is running adult education in literacy and numeracy and I.T. skills. Whilst these things are measurable, the increase in their self-esteem should not be underestimated. When excited people are telling them that they can now read their own texts or the signs in the community or are showing them their books saying ‘Vzuri sana’ (very good). Then there is the work done supporting the youth through sport. There is such high unemployment and the youth are disenchanted. It has been difficult changing attitudes but Geoff has had some success with his two football teams and boxing club. NEXT PRIORITIES So what are the priorities now? Most importantly they need to finish building the school. When completed it will accommodate 300 children, aged three to fourteen years. It will contain the health clinic, a library and an I.T suite. It will also have a large hall. All of these facilities will be available to the wider community in the evening and weekends. You can learn more about this wonderful charity, which is transforming many lives, and discover how you can help, by donating at www.mustardseedproject.co.uk, and on their Facebook page.

EATING OUT

Kings Head, Stamford Lynsey Saker found much to enjoy in David Waycott’s well-cooked pub food offering in cosy surroundings

T

ucked just off the high street in Stamford, The King’s Head is a very inviting option, especially on a cold autumnal October evening, perfect pub weather! The refurbished 17th century coach house, welcomed us in, drawn by the open fire and intimate setting and the stylish but cosy décor. Once comfortable , Kelly, our server was attentive and knowledgeable, and never allowed our glasses to empty all evening. We chose and enjoyed starters of Gruyere & Spinach Fritters and Hand Carved Scottish Smoked Salmon, which was fresh, plentiful (note they were generous enough to be a main) and just delivered by Colin, a regular and as it turns out, their fishmonger with stories to tell! Onto the main event, and my immaculately cooked medium rare steak, served with chips, onion rings and seasonal greens, was the perfect paring for my ruby-red, fruity Malbec. My companion stuck with the (incredibly) fresh fish options, and thoroughly enjoyed his daily special of Roast Fillet of Fresh Cod. Full to bursting, after two courses we weren’t sure we could manage dessert, but persuaded by David the owner (and chef), we managed a couple of mouthfuls of the rich and creamy Bread & Butter Pudding and were glad we did. There wasn’t an empty table by 8.30pm and there was a wonderful atmosphere full of chatter and happy diners, consisting of groups and couples (perfect date venue) so make sure to book ahead, even on a week night. We’ve heard on the grapevine that the lunches are fantastic and popular, with a selection of homemade soups and sandwiches to enjoy, and that tapas style portions will soon be making an appearance on the Dinner Menu too. All in all the tasty food, cosy setting with roaring fire and the beautiful heated courtyard which even boasts the fig tree which provides the fruit for their own fig jam, this Stamford gem is definitely worth a visit. With a skilled home cook at the helm and a constantly developing menu, if you’re local, like me, I can imagine you’ll be back time after time • King’s Head, 19 Maiden Lane, Stamford, PE9 2AZ Tel:01780 753510

Bread Meat Cheese - NEW

A

n interesting, independent new food outlet is to open in Stamford over the coming weeks. Bread Meat Cheese will be producing “artisan hand-held food” in Red Lion Street – a take on New York deli style sandwiches, hot and cold. A spokesperson said: “The simple idea is to create street-stall inspired sandwiches of a kind not found in any supermarket or chain outlet, all produced on site.” Bread Meat Cheese promises to be a welcome addition to Stamford’s daytime offerings, open early to catch people on their way to work and of course throughout lunchtime. Sandwiches such as Divine Swine, the company’s signature Porchetta in a local bakery’s baguette served with salsa verde will feature on a regularly evolving menu all of which will be available online. Twitter followers of @breadmeatcheese will also be privy to a “secret menu”, sandwiches from under the counter! The new venture stressed the importance it places on working with local suppliers and producers: “So many talk about provenance, but we will actively publicise where our ingredients are sourced; for example our meat suppliers are Groovy Foods of Bourne and Crowtree Farm at Thorney, cheese and all bread products are procured locally too.” • The exact date of opening will be announced on www.breadmeatcheese.co.uk in due course.

A

dam, David and Darren, the enthusiastic new management team at The Collyweston Slater, are not new to the pub trade. For the past 11 years they have been successfully running The Horseshoe at Thurlby, nr Bourne. They pride themselves on producing good home cooked food to a high standard. With Starters such as Homemade Soup of the day, Classic Prawn Cocktail, Creamy Garlic Mushrooms and Goat’s Cheese on Toast, on offer, you know you have entered a pub that likes producing traditional food. The Main courses are again quite traditional with Dry Aged Steaks, Chump of Lamb, Steak & Ale Pie, Chicken with a Creamy Leek and Stilton sauce, Sweet Chilli Roasted Salmon and Homemade Authentic curry. Also Sandwiches, Wraps, Jacket Potatoes and Salads. I went for the Goat’s Cheese on Toast with Port and Cranberry dressing. It was simple but well executed. The dressing was sweet yet tart and teamed well with the creaminess of the generous piece of grilled goat’s cheese. Lorna went for the Double Pork Loin Steak from the grill with Black Pudding and an apple cider sauce. This came with a large bowl of beautifully cooked crunchy vegetables. The Pudding menu changes regularly, with a Cheesecake, Crème Brulee and Sponge Pudding normally featuring. I opted for the Vanilla Crème Brulee and I can honestly say I have never eaten better. Perfectly cooked with a wonderful dark, crunchy caramel layer on top. Stunning! Lorna had sorbets. In summary, I would say, this is not a Gastro Pub but a Good Food Pub. • Collyweston Slater, Collyweston, on the A43 Tel: 01780 444288 for bookings STAMFORD LIVING NOVEMBER 2015

Winter warmers W

PHOTO: ROBIN STEWART

E’VE been celebrating at both The Olive Branch and The Red Lion Inn. The Olive Branch has been handed a Sawday’s Fabulous Food Award 2016, while The Red Lion has been named Leicestershire Dining Pub of the Year 2016 for the second year running. We don’t set out to win awards but it’s always nice when they come in! This issue I have a couple of autumn/winter recipes for you. The partridge dish is a classic meal to enjoy in front of the fire when there’s frost on the ground. The cocktail is one we regularly serve at the Red Lion in Stathern and is a great winter warmer. Speaking of cocktails, we’ve got a fine new selection available at both pubs, including ‘Cracking Pear of Figs’ – bourbon, honey, pear and black pepper; ‘Smoked Bacon & Maple’ – bourbon infused with smoked bacon, with orange and maple syrup; and ‘Winter Fizz’ – date purée, port and Cointreau topped with fizz.

An earthy winter dish and a cockle-warming cocktail from The Olive Branch’s head chef and co-owner… IT’S PARTY SEASON Party season is upon us! The Barn at The Olive Branch is now equipped with a bar billiards table and vinyl record deck to create the ultimate laid-back vintage party venue. Dust off your records, bring them along and party like it’s 1969! While looking forward to listening to your Duran Duran LPs, you can enjoy the main event – dinner. Our Set Party Menu includes dishes like fillet of bream, sautéed wild mushrooms, confit salsify, white wine sauce, and truffle potato purée. And braised shoulder of lamb, swede potato boulangère and grilled radicchio.

THE STATHERN MULE • 25ml Lamb’s Navy Rum (or any dark rum) • 250ml Belvoir Ginger Beer Pressé • 1 slice lime • 5 ice cubes • Dash Belvoir Apple & Ginger cordial

Roast local partridge, root veg, game chips and bread sauce SERVES 4 • 4 oven-ready partridge • Sprig fresh thyme • 1 carrot, peeled, washed, roughly chopped • 1 parsnip, peeled, washed, roughly chopped • 1 turnip, peeled, washed, roughly chopped • 4 slices bread, broken up • 1 shallot, finely chopped • 2 cloves garlic, finely chopped • 1 glass Madeira/Sherry • 1 glass dry white wine • Butter & rapeseed oil • 2 tbsp cream • 2 Maris Piper potatoes, peeled, sliced thinly on a mandoline, then washed under cold water for four minutes Partridge 1. In a hot frying pan with a drizzle of rapeseed oil and a couple of knobs of butter, seal the birds on all four sides until golden brown (about five minutes). This will give the partridge some colour. 2. Place in a preheated oven (Gas Mark 6 or 200°C) and roast with a clove of garlic and a sprig of thyme for 12 minutes (partridge don’t need long). 3. Remove from the oven and allow to rest for a further 10 minutes before serving. Root vegetables 1. Place all the vegetables into a saucepan,

cover with water, season and bring to boil. When just cooked, remove from the heat and allow to cool. 2. To finish veg, cook in a hot frying pan with a little oil until golden brown, drizzling with clear honey. Add a dash of lemon juice or sherry vinegar to serve.

1. Rub the rim of your glass with lime slice and then squeeze the lime into your glass. 2. Fill your glass with ice cubes and add a shot of rum. 3. Top up with ginger beer and finish with a dash of cordial.

Bread sauce 1. Sweat off the shallot and garlic until soft. Add the bread and stir. 2. Add the wines and cook off the alcohol by boiling for two-three minutes. 3. Remove from the heat and blend with the butter and cream until smooth. Season to taste before serving. Game chips 1. Drain the water from the sliced potatoes and heat clean vegetable oil in a fryer to 160°C. 2. Carefully drop the slices into the hot fryer in small handfuls and fry to a golden brown. When cooked, remove from the fryer and drain on kitchen paper.

BRINGING LOCAL FOOD TO LIFE

Pheasantry Brewery & Restaurant An award-winning microbrewery and restaurant on a 4,000-acre farm near Lincoln ticks all the boxes for Matt Wright…

Pheasantry Brewery & Restaurant owners Mark and Mary Easterbrook

A

microbrewery that serves food and drink isn’t a new concept in these parts. All Saints’ Brewery in Stamford, where Samuel Smith’s fruit beers are made, offers food, as does the award-winning Grainstore Brew Pub in Oakham and Oakham Ales’ Brewery Tap in, confusingly, Peterborough. Also, there’s Nene Valley Brewery’s Tap & Kitchen at Oundle Wharf. And since 2012 another relatively new contender has been both cooking and brewing: Pheasantry Brewery Restaurant & Cafe in East Markham, just off the A57 between Newark and Lincoln. In August, Pheasantry Brewery won a Gold Medal at CAMRA’s Great British Beer Festival in London, meaning its Best Bitter is the finest in its category in the UK. That’s an impressive feat, and I’d heard good things about the food too, so I decided to visit. Where Pheasantry Brewery differs to the places mentioned above is that it is completely rural, situated on a working family farm. It was purpose-built in 2012, so although it is in an old converted threshing barn, it feels modern and spacious inside, with the brewery on one side of the building and the restaurant/café/bar on the other. It works brilliantly and if anyone is planning a wedding, I would urge you to visit Pheasantry Brewery. The courtyard and sizeable, tranquil beer garden make it an ideal space for a party. “Because we’re on a farm, we wanted to take a similar approach to that of a vineyard,” says founder Mark Easterbrook, who runs Pheasantry Brewery with his wife Mary. “Vineyards often have cafes and restaurants attached, so that provided a template. This is a 4,000 acre farm and we grow up to 944 acres of malting barley, so also like a vineyard we grow

88

the raw ingredient for the drink we produce.” Never mind the beer, Pheasantry Brewery’s bright and airy restaurant/café would be worth a visit even if you had no interest in ale whatsoever. It is run by Lincoln-based caterer Black Peppermint (another reason why it’s perfect for a party) and the focus is on tasty, locally sourced British food. It’s got a decent wine list too. The menu offers mains such as Pheasantry minced bacon and beef burger in a brioche bun with Lincolnshire Poacher cheese, triplecooked chips and homemade relish; or seared seabass with butter beans, baby spinach, chorizo, goat’s cheese and micro coriander; or roasted

Matt was impressed with his burger

A jolly new arrival

chicken breast with prawn aranchini, stir-fried yellow peppers, peanut massaman and fondant potato. Pork from award-winning Redhill Farm in nearby Gainsborough is used extensively. And there are also tapas-style options (three for around a tenner), which include blowtorched salmon; or ham hock with crispy hen’s egg and Pheasantry Brewery’s own piccalilli. The quality of the cooking and ingredients is excellent. I chose the minced beef and bacon burger, which came with a wonderful homemade relish loaded with capers and gherkins. As well as being delicious, the bun was solid enough to hold everything together without disintegrating, which is fundamental to a good burger. And with the great food, you can of course enjoy the wonderful beer, brewed just yards away. Of his recent CAMRA UK Best Bitter Gold Medal, Mark says: “Winning was a surreal moment. We were up against 18 brews including Timothy Taylor’s Boltmaker, last year’s overall Champion Beer of Britain.” That’s a fantastic achievement, and to celebrate, Great Food Club members can get a free pint of Pheasantry Best Bitter with any main dish ordered in the restaurant (valid for up to six per membership card). You can join Great Food Club for free – and get access to over 200 other exclusive local offers at recommended venues – at www.greatfoodclub.co.uk.

Another local brewery that deserves a mention is Baker’s Dozen of Ketton, which was launched in July 2015 by Dean Baker, landlord of Stamford’s Jolly Brewer. I recently popped into the Jolly Brewer and tried his ‘Galactic Landlady’, described as a “remix” of his ‘Electric Landlady’ ale (great names, especially if you’re a Hendrix fan!). Galactic Landlady is about as far removed from a pint of John Smith’s as you can get and is bursting with New World hop aromas and flavours. Dean is clearly influenced by the craft beer movement, which started in the US, and it’s great to see even more highly flavoured beers reaching our corner of the world. Actually, the Jolly Brewer, with its regularly rotating list of wellcared-for beers – which usually includes two personal favourites, Brewster’s and Hopshackle – make it my choice for best beer pub in Stamford.

UPDATES

Lasting Powers of Attorney – not just an optional extra A

Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA) for property and financial affairs is a document which allows you to appoint someone to make certain financial decisions on your behalf. This includes paying bills, managing bank accounts and selling your property, should there ever be a time when you are physically or mentally unable to do so yourself. It is impossible to know whether you, your partner or a parent will ever be in a position to need someone to act for you, but the consequences of being in that position and being unprepared are so potentially devastating that preparation is imperative. The One Show recently highlighted a situation in which a 42 year old man was injured in a jet ski accident which left him in a coma for three years. He had no Power of Attorney, which meant that his wife had to apply to the Court of Protection to be appointed as his Deputy. This application can cost thousands of pounds and can take many months. Perhaps a more common situation is that of a married couple, living in a house that is jointly owned. If one spouse loses capacity through a stroke or dementia and moves into a residential home, the other may not be able to afford to remain in the house and may wish to sell to buy a smaller property. Not only will it be necessary to make an application for a Deputy for their spouse, but it will also be necessary to make a separate application to the Court to enable the property to be sold. Both applications could have been completely avoided by having a Power of Attorney in place. An LPA is therefore vital . Think of it as a one off insurance premium. Once done it can simply be put away and forgotten but you can rest

assured in the knowledge that you have done all that it is possible to do to protect yourself and your family against any unforeseen future problems. • If you would like to discuss Lasting Power of Attorneys further, please contact Sarah Westwood on 01780 484570 or email sarah. westwood@buckles-law.co.uk.

S

t James Church in Castle Bytham originates from the 11th century when the Norman, William de Colville became Lord of the Manor and the original castle was constructed. Interior features include the 15th century door adjacent to the chancel arch which gave access to the former roof loft and the ornate 14th century tomb recess in the chancel and in the churchyard are two medieval stone coffins. The current lead covering to the nave roof is thought to date from a Victorian restoration of 1857 and is therefore at the end of its working life and is why they need to raise around £100,000. A number of grants have been applied for and local companies Clipsham Stone and Trinity Conferences, along with the Summer Fair committee have already pledged their support to the restoration fund. The Stamford Singers have agreed to give a candle-lit concert featuring works by Vivaldi, Palestrina, Rutter and the ever popular Gershwin. • Tickets for the concert are only £5 each and are available from the Parochial Church Council contact below. LOCAL HISTORY

TheStamford RoughsandRiots Ian Dair discovers that Stamford wasn’t always the peaceful and harmonious place that it seems to be these days

W

e think of Stamford as a peaceful, respectable, even dignified town. It wasn’t in the month of March 1871. As the Lincolnshire Chronicle reported, the Stamford roughs were at large and riot and assault were the order of the day. Like most places, Stamford then as now had its crimes and lesser misdemeanours. For example, David Davidson, a whitesmith (a worker in tin), was summoned before the court for wilfully defacing a number painted on his door. By direction of the Local Board, a painter had been contracted to number the houses throughout the town. But Mr. Davidson had wanted to put up a brass number of his own. For this crime of wanting to be individual he was fined 6d (2 ½p) with 1shilling (5p) costs. A more serious offence was committed by Thomas Cecil Toon. He was a billsticker who would be prosecuted. Toon had assaulted a rival billsticker, a man named Bunning, by striking him on the head with a paste brush. The thought of the two bill stickers fencing with paste brushes may semicomic. But Toon had inflicted a serious wound on Bunning which, had the blow fallen a little lower, apparently could have proved fatal. Then there was John Fowler, alias Ward, who was charged with stealing a waistcoat and hat, the property of John Potter, clothier, of St John’s Street. The prisoner, Fowler alias Ward, pleaded guilty and was sentenced to seven days with hard labour. Fowler alias Ward, previously of excellent character, attributed his misconduct to drink.

Zoe Nash

The roughs, riots and assault Ah, the demon drink. Now for the roughs, riots and assault. Stamford had been well aware of the dangers of the demon drink and had held its first temperance lecture as far back as 1836. A series of lectures had been organised by the Stamford Temperance Society for March 1871. The first meeting, on the 8th, was well attended, with about 600 people quietly seated in the Corn Exchange to listen to the lectures. They weren’t allowed to do so. As the Chronicle reported disapprovingly - ‘twenty or thirty young men, assisted and encouraged by a well-known public functionary, amused themselves by stamping the floor, shouting, whistling, cat-calling, pelting bits of oilcake (compressed linseed used as fodder or manure), and jostling persons supposed to be in favour of temperance principles, pushing each other violently against them, and otherwise committing cowardly assaults on persons whose motives were to promote the peace and good order of the town.’ That wasn’t the end of it or the worst of it. The Temperance Society held another meeting shortly after the first, on 13 March. A paid lecturer, a Mr. Richard Horne of the British Temperance League, had been invited. He didn’t get very far. ‘On this occasion the number of disturbers had increased to nearly 300, who took their place at the back of the room, performing the same disgraceful pranks as on the previous evening, forming themselves into a crowd, swaying backward and forward, and making it impossible to hear the lecturer's voice by disturbing the proceedings with noises which could scarcely be rivalled by the savage inmates of a menagerie’.

94

Jack Lane At the close of the meeting the mob lay in wait opposite the hall for the members of the committee ‘greeting them with yells and groans, following them down the street, hooting and roaring like mad bulls, pelting members of the committee with stones, and shouting ‘down with them’, disturbing the whole neighbourhood.’ The committee called for the police ‘but the only answer they could get was the men could not be spared, as it was the horse fair night. This state of things continued for nearly two hours. One or two persons were taken into custody by the police, who happened to be passing as the mob came rushing out of Wellington Lane’. The Temperance Society was not cowed. Another meeting was held on the very next night. This time the police were present and ‘secured quiet until nearly the close of the meeting when the

Gillian Masters

Abigail Thompson-O’Connor same proceedings were repeated by some of the same party’. Quite rightly the Chronicle condemned the ‘disgraceful disturbances which have been made by a number of ‘fast’ young men, and others who ought to have some better notion of decent behaviour’. The paper’s reporter predicted that ‘The proceedings at our Police Court last Saturday will teach the Stamford ‘roughs’ that they cannot interfere with the right of public meeting, and hustle quiet people in the streets with impunity.’ With evident satisfaction, the Chronicle went on to report on what happened to some of the troublemakers as they were hauled up before the magistrates.

Angaharad Graham

The judgement The main man in the dock, charged with offences on 13 March, was Joseph Atkins. It may or may not be a coincidence that he worked for a local wine and spirit merchant. Also charged were George Blake and Samuel Parkinson for similar offences committed on the next evening. Atkins was accused of making a personal attack on a Mr. Lock, one of the promoters of the meeting. Lock had left the hall ‘but was followed by a crowd hooting, yelling and pelting him’. Amongst the most violent of the mob was Atkins, who, ‘not content with aiding in the uproar, made a personal attack upon the complainant by pushing and striking him’. This was supported by several witnesses. The charge against Blake and Parkinson was that they were 'equally demonstrative, joining a mob who escorted Lock from the Exchange Hall as far as Clock Cottage on his way home, hustling him and threatening personal violence. Some forty or fifty cowardly fellows surrounded Lock at Scotgate, and but for the arrival of the police, he would have had difficulty in getting home’.

Meghan Browett The defendants’ lawyer ‘ably addressed the Bench and called several witnesses on behalf of his clients, but be failed to shake the overwhelming testimony against the defendants.’ The magistrates retired for deliberation. On their return to court the Mayor said they had found the defendants guilty not only of making disturbance, but of assaulting Lock. The magistrates ‘were determined that these disgraceful disturbances should be put down with a strong hand. The members of the Total Abstinence Society had perfect right to their opinions, and neither the defendants nor any other persons were justified in interfering with them. Each of the defendants would be fined and in default of payment would be imprisoned with hard labour for a month’. The magistrates had, ‘firmly and with stern resolve’, upheld the right to freedom of speech in Stamford. The peace, respectability and dignity of the town had been restored. STAMFORD PEOPLE

Vicky Buckman Stamford High School, the girls’ senior school of the trio of Stamford Endowed Schools, welcomed its new Head at the start of this academic year. Alysia Anderson met Vicky Buckman to talk about education, scuba diving and Doctor Who Which schools did you work at before and which subject did you teach? Prior to taking up the post at Stamford, I spent nine years as the senior Deputy Head at City of London Freemen’s School in Ashtead, Surrey. Before that I was at Christ’s Hospital in Horsham where, amongst other things, I ran a girls’ boarding house for a number of years. I am a biologist by training and still enjoy enthusing young people about the living world. Do you have children yourself? I am married to Stephen, who is a priest, and we have two children but they could hardly be described as children! James is 22 and working on a part-time MA at Kingston University; Lucy is 21 and is living and working in Worthing. We also have a large ginger cat called Borodin. What attracted you to the role of Head of Stamford High School? Quite simply, I was longing to lead my own school - but not just any school! I wanted to go where I could use my experience and enthusiasms most effectively. When I came to Stamford, I was struck by how vibrant and happy the School was (and is!). Also, having had a lot of experience of looking after girls within a co-educational setting, I felt very much in sympathy with the ‘diamond structure’ at the Endowed Schools (co-educational at the Junior School and again in the Sixth Form). What do you think are the strengths/ challenges of single sex teaching? I think the ‘diamond structure’ provides a very elegant solution to the conundrum of single sex versus co-education. The world is undeniably co-educational but research shows that girls, and boys, do better at school when they are taught separately. I think the SES model allows that but with a nod to the real world. Many of

our activities are co-educational so there is no ‘mystery’ about the opposite sex, yet lessons are tailored to meet the needs of the respective sexes and their rather different approaches to learning. In the Sixth Form, we can start to teach them in co-educational groups in readiness for life beyond school. What do you hope to bring to the High School? The School has a fine reputation and I am looking to take it forward and make it even better. My previous experience, in two very different schools, means I have plenty of ideas on which to draw. Equally, I am surrounded by a talented and hard-working group of colleagues who have lots of ideas that they would like to see realised. I am passionate about getting the best outcomes for the girls, not only academically but in terms of the skills and attitudes necessary to take the world on! The School’s Houses are named after strong women from history such as Edith Cavell. Is there a particular female role model you admire? I have been very lucky in my career to work with two female deputies, both of whom now run their own schools, who acted not only as great role models but also encouraged me and gave me lots of advice and opportunities to hone my leadership skills. They have very

different styles but I learned a great deal from them. I hope I have taken the best bits of both! Do you have any secret talents that might surprise us? I confess to being a great Dr Who fan – not really a secret! Having two older brothers meant that I have followed the series from almost its earliest episodes. I am also a keen gardener, cook and musician. Two years ago, I was talked into a scuba diving trip, so learned to dive. It must be the most terrifying thing I’ve ever done but seeing aquatic life that I had taught about and only seen in books or on TV was absolutely amazing. What do you enjoy about Stamford and do you live in the town or beyond? At present I am living in Stamford but will soon be moving to a more permanent residence in Corby Glen when my husband takes up the post of Priest-in-charge of the Corby Glen benefice. Stamford itself is beautiful and I love the fact that everything is close enough to walk. I am also delighted by how friendly everyone is; folk you don’t know will stop you in the street for a chat! When I got the job, I was stunned how many people had heard of Stamford/ been to Stamford/knew someone who was at the Endowed Schools. Even our cat’s vet in Sussex had played against SHS when she was at school!
