Stamford Library

10 Updates: Great Eastern Run, Burghley Craft Show, Stamford Holistic Candles

W

HAT makes Stamford great is its people, its beauty and of course its institutions…one of the finest being the Stamford Library – what a brilliant place, well organised, not a shambles at all (Ok, poor pun, sorry). It is always (quietly!) buzzing, full of people of all ages going about their enquiries; and the staff are always incredibly helpful, even when I cock up the automatic book withdrawal system (thanks Louise, for sorting it). I did a little comparative search of its opening hours and found that it is open 20% more hours than Birmingham’s main central library (48 hours vs. 40 hours). Now that’s quite an achievement! So thanks to everyone – the LCC, SKDC, staff and no doubt many others who keep loving it and supporting it.

FASHION

Gorgeous Gagliardi

When Gagliardi opened on St. Mary’s Street there was much speculation about the smart shiny new menswear addition with an unusual name. Sally Stillingfleet met up with Gayle and Richard Wailes, the couple whose strong fashion background saw an opportunity to bring sartorial style to Stamford

I

T’S not the first time I have come across this family. From my daughter’s Primary School days I remember Ellie looking wistfully when their son Eddie (who has modelled for us) had ‘real’ Hunter wellies. Yes, they were ‘in Fashion’ she told me and they were cool! Both with long track records in the industry, Gayle and Richard have worked for High Street giants in design and in the more gritty commercial aspects of fashion retail, from initial design through to fabric sourcing and factory site visits all over the world and back again. They have worked long hours for the likes of George Davies who famously brought fast fashion to the supermarket trolley, at Asda and later with Per Una. “George instinctively knew where fashion was heading. They were exciting times but extremely hardworking times,” Richard explained. The couple was highly regarded and he would always get them on board with his latest venture. But family came first, and when Eddie and his sister came along things had to change. Gayle latterly worked as Senior Womenswear Designer for Next more locally and Richard was a Director at Crew. They made good connections with a Maltese tailoring factory owner who became a close personal friend and together they launched an opportunity for Gagliardi in the UK. Gayle and Richard were pleased to get the chance to do something for themselves and set about finding the perfect location for their first retail adventure. There was a lot of “spade work” to be done they told me, but one thing’s for sure they really know their product. Anyone who loves their clothes or just instinctively knows when something feels right is going to appreciate this shop and keep coming back for more. There’s an interesting variety of covetable menswear, shoes and accessories lovingly displayed. Selling is not a challenge for this pair. Surprisingly the challenge has been recognisng that men are often blissfully unaware of the size they should wear. They take much pleasure in outfitting customers and introducing them to beautiful fabrics and classic pattern cutting, which have resulted in some timeless pieces mixed in with key fashion elements. The stock is selected by Richard and is constantly changing so there’s always something fresh on the horizon with three collections per season. I was surprised how good Eddie looked in the clothes, with lots of slimmer fits and great styling. His parents have a lot to be proud of, a beautiful shop and a son who still looks pretty cool in the clothes - can’t be bad.

Stamford Boot Camp supports Anna’s Hope Stamford Boot Camp will once again be entering a team to run the 2015 Perkins Great Eastern Half Marathon this October in aid of Anna’s Hope – the East of England’s premier charity for children and young adults with brain tumours

I

n the past two years they have raised approximately £10,000 and last year won the Anna’s Hope Sports Award as the #1 donator to the charity of any sports organisation competing in the event. Proprietor Rob Dulieu said, “I am very proud of my Campers past achievements, both on a personal level and for what they have done to help Anna’s Hope and the children they support. A good number of this year’s team will be newcomers to the event and while it is a daunting challenge, their overriding concern is to help others less fortunate than themselves. I really hope that people will support us and donate to this worthy cause.” • If you would like to make a donation, please go to www.justgiving.com/Stamford-Boot-Camp.

So make sure you come and eat in this new festival atmosphere Take away a wide range of tasty foods from the food producers and retailers to enjoy at home, Artisan cheeses, rare breed meats, pickles, chutneys & preserves, wines and spirits. Moving on to another major element of the show, the Craft Village. There’s lots to see and buy from Artists, Designers and Craftsmen from around the UK. They are supported by many working Craftsmen. Rural Craft demonstrations are always a highlight of the show, watch crafts in the making by talented working Craftsmen attending the event. HEALTH & BEAUTY Genevieve Potter tries a luxurious new facial treatment and keeps that summer glow going for a little longer

Thalgo MCeutic at Equilibrium T

HE new MCeutic facial and products have been widely anticipated in the beauty world, so I was intrigued to see if they deliver on their promise and was able to try them at Equilbrium’s recent MCeutic launch day. The Thalgo brand is renowned for its marine-based ingredients, however this range is based on medicallyinspired, cosmaceutical elements, breaking away from traditional skin care. There’s a patented ingredient called mesolift marin; an infusion made up from a complex blend of vitamins, minerals and amino acids, including hyaluronic acid, renowned for its water binding, skin-plumping properties. Thalgo claims that mesolift marin, which is at the heart of the product range and the facial itself, releases slowly over 48 hours, to stimulate skin cell turnover and radically increase elastin and collagen – the keys to smooth, youthful skin. Additionally, the MCeutic contains a patented complex called Neo Skin. This has been developed specifically to improve oily, blemished skin. It treats deep blemishes and skin irregularities caused by malfunctioning sebocytes, which cause spots and upset the balance and overall quality and appearance of the skin. The ‘magic bullets’ within Neo Skin include the Buchu leaf extract, an African plan whose leaves are exceptionally rich in flavonoids, and two algae extracts, which contain concentrated zinc, delivering antiinflammatory and anti-oxidant properties. All extremely scientific! There were three main stages to the MCeutic facial. Firstly a detailed diagnosis determines the grades of severity of skin imperfections and irregularities to correct. This then dictates the strength of peel that is used as the first critical part of the treatment. The peel has salicylic acid and active vitamin C, to eliminate dead cells, and fade irregularities. The term ‘peel’ always sounds daunting, but whilst tingly, it doesn’t cause any real discomfort. Secondly, the skin is massaged and infused with a regenerative formula, which includes 5% pure active oxygen. The massage targets pressure points to boost skin detoxification, drain any puffiness and stimulate the circulation to lift and plump. This stage literally feels like it is breathing life in to the skin. Lastly, a serum mask with Neo Skin is applied to resurface and exfoliate the upper layer of the skin, inhibiting sebocytes, which cause spots and imperfections. As a final step, a resurfacing cream serum and an SPF 50+ cream are applied to leave the skin dewy and protect from UV rays. The research and development behind MCeutic is undeniably impressive, but just as importantly, even after a relatively quick facial, it seemed to perk my skin up from its slightly dull, post-Summer state. The science and investment behind MCeutic has obviously paid dividends, because this is five-star facial. I’m also eager to try the MCeutic home product range, especially as some of the products are applied over a sevenday spell to give quick results. The MCeutic 60 minute facial costs £75, or a course of four treatments including a discovery kit at home pack and full sized SPF product is £275. • Equilibrium - 7 St Paul’s Street, Stamford, PE9 2BE Tel: 01780 757579 www.equilibriumstamford.co.uk www.facebook.com/equilibrium

A post-Summer glow at Emma Cannings

E

MMA Cannings now stock the Vita Liberata range of tanning products and offer the renowned Vita Liberata spray tan. The advanced formulations of Vita Liberata products were conceived to counteract all of the negative aspects of a conventional spray tan – the risk of patchiness and streaks, the uneven fade out, the sticky feeling and of course, the smell, which can be over-powering! Additionally, unlike many other fake tans, Vita Liberata is completely nontoxic, with no parabens or other harmful additives. The certified organic ingredients not only create a golden glow, but they actually contain antioxidants and antiageing properties derived from aloe vera, pomegranate, raspberry, grape and witch hazel. The Vita Liberata spray tan is applied in a tanning booth, using a spray machine, just

as you’d expect. It’s quick – therapist Lottie took around five or ten minutes to apply the spray tan – but the real difference to tans I’ve had before is how quickly it is touch dry, and how subtle it smells. I could get dressed (in loose dark clothing), almost straight away. The tan developed beautifully overnight

and after showering left an even, golden glow, which looked natural rather than overdone. It lasted a good five days (although I was in and out of a pool, which caused it to fade more quickly). I also invested in the Vita Liberata pHenomenal 2-3 week tan mousse, which was brilliantly easy to apply in order to top up my colour. Applied over a few evenings, it felt as light as air and, much to my surprise, actually did last a couple of weeks. Vita Liberata is the smartest, most natural and nourishing version of fake tanning and is a great alternative to sun exposure. I’m left in no doubt as to why it is adored by the world’s top spas and stores. And it’s definitely worth a reminder that the key to making any fake-tan last is good hydration with a body moisturiser, especially during the Autumn and Winter months when skin is at its driest thanks to cold air and central heating. Look for one that doesn’t contain heavy oil or retinoids though, as both can strip your fake tan. A Vita Liberata spray tan costs £22, pHenomenal 2-3 week tan mousse £37.50 • Emma Cannings, Stamford Garden Centre, Great Casterton, Stamford, PE9 4BB Tel: 01780 766583 www.emmacannings.co.uk

“Over the last few weeks I have been doing life coaching with Tom, he’s a great guy and it’s been lots Client Testimonial: Hannah of fun. I have been struggling with a few things, mainly confidence and eating. I was terrible, I would start a diet and then the next day end up in McDonalds so I was really quite struggling. I came to Tom, he hypnotised me, this was a good few weeks ago now, since then, my diet has been on point, it’s been structured, I've lots 6 lbs, and so it’s all going great. I can't believe how much better I have been feeling, I can't thank Tom enough. I was very sceptical at first about it all when I first met Tom but it definitely works as I have not had a cheeseburger since, and I don’t actually want one. I feel like what he has done has really changed my life”

“I HAD A SESSION WITH TOM AND REALLY ENJOYED THE EXPERIENCE. HE MADE ME FEEL AT EASE AND BY THE END OF THE SESSION I FELT EXTREMELY RELAXED AND POSITIVE IN KNOWING I CAN ACHIEVE MY GOALS WITH THE TECHNIQUES HE SHARED WITH ME. TOM IS HIGHLY PROFESSIONAL AND I RECOMMEND HIS SERVICES.”

Emma Cannings Facial & Bodycare Emma writes: “I believe the beauty industry has gone wrong in so many ways. We can spend £1000s on beauty products and treatments but if we load our skin with chemicals and also have a poor diet we will never achieve the antiageing skin we desire. “This is why I am a firm believer in treating the skin from the inside out. Start with a good healthy diet and feed the skin with natural, organic skin care. The chemicals we put on our body today can and will affect you now and in later years. Eat clean, stay hydrated, keep active and get rest. “I am so excited and happy to announce that I now only stock organic, natural skin care products. Our luxury skin care range, Pinks Boutique, is 100% organic and natural. We also stock the yummy Inspiral snacks and smoothie ingredients. Other exciting additions are the Glassharma glass straws. They are much better for the environment with no plastic chemicals and are recommended by dentists to avoid tooth decay. We are stocking the beautiful Eat Pretty books to help give readers a very

clear understanding on how eating correctly can help with anti-aging and skin problems. There will be more coming soon, so please visit us at the Stamford Garden Centre.” • Emma Cannings, Stamford Garden Centre, Gt Casterton, Stamford, PE9 4BB. 01780 766583 - www.emmacannings.co.uk

Stamford LITTLE LANE NURSERY

S

ET to open in October is The Little Lane Nursery, based in Silver Lane, catering for children aged between 6 weeks and 5 years of age. The nursery is the creation of two Stamford mothers - Victoria Banfield and Emma Altham, who both have children of nursery age and feel this gives them a unique perspective as they know exactly what parents want and need from a nursery. “We have worked hard to produce a real home from home environment and firmly believe that children only learn so much within the walls of the nursery; so with the help of our specialist walking wagon, we will be out every day - whether it’s to feed the ducks on the Meadows, a picnic in Burghley Park or to buy some fruit and veg from the market on a Friday – again reinforcing our home from home ethos.” Victoria and Emma are both self-confessed perfectionists and extremely passionate about The Little Lane Nursery. Emma comes from a nursery nurse background and Victoria has an extensive business account management background. “Our blend of passion for childcare, efficient business knowledge and most importantly being mummies, has enabled us to create a unique boutique nursery school.” • The Little Lane Nursery, 1 Silver Lane, Stamford. ARCHITECTURE

Montagu Monuments There is treasure hidden in Warkton. In St Edmund’s church to be precise. Beyond the silvered oak door, are four of the most breath-taking monuments you will ever see in a village church. Indeed, these are some of Britain’s finest eighteenth century sculptures.

K

NOWN as the Montagu Monuments, these funerary sculptures are memorials to four members of the Montagu Family – the ancestors of the Buccleuch family who brought us Boughton. Set into niches of a purpose-built chancel they remember John 2nd Duke of Montagu (1749) and his wife, Mary Churchill, Duchess of Montagu (1752), their daughter Mary Brudenell (1775) and grand-daughter Elizabeth Montagu (1827). The glorious allegorical monuments to the Duke and Duchess were designed by the popular French sculptor, Louis-Francois Roubiliac. The monument to their daughter, Mary Brudenell, Duchess of Montagu was designed by Robert Adams and executed by Pieter van Gelder; while that to her daughter, Elizabeth was sculpted by Thomas Campbell. The Duke of Montagu’s monument commemorates his philanthropic life; in this scene Charity, surrounded by weeping children, pins a medallion to the monument, while the mourning Duchess looks on. One of the children carries a short, extinguished torch to symbolise the Duke’s untimely death. It is believed that this fine monument was originally intended to be erected in Westminster Abbey, however, when the Duchess learned that her monument could not be placed alongside her husband’s, she ordered it to be built at Warkton. The medieval chancel was demolished in order to home the new sculpture. The monument to the Duchess occupies the niche immediately opposite the Duke’s. Here, the marble figures depict an allegory of time: at the base sits a putto with a full spindle, an invisible thread, representing life, runs through the fingers of the figure above, while the characters opposite gather the thread and carry a scissors. The monument to Mary Brudenell is the most theatrical of all. Set in a Rococo-style niche, an angel comforts the mourners by pointing to Heaven. The posturing and delicate interaction between the figures and the movement of the garments brings the scene to life. The fourth monument was carved over 50 years later than Mary Brudenell’s and is stylistically quite different. Elizabeth of

Montagu sits regally while to her left Morpheus, wearing a crown of poppy-heads and carrying an upturned torch symbolises life extinguished – perhaps eternal sleep; on her right the figure of a woman, possibly the muse of history, Clio, writes on a scroll to perhaps recount Elizabeth’s life. The monuments have just recently undergone an extensive conservation project of repair and cleaning; work which has seen the Lincolnshire conservation company, Skillingtons shortlisted for the Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings’ John Betjeman Award and Historic England’s Heritage Angel Award. The careful conservation of the precious sculptures began with detailed recording and analysis to understand the sources of the decay and failure. From this, it was discovered that environmental conditions in the chancel, ventilation issues and landscaping were creating condensation, which in turn was leading to the corrosion of the ironframework of the marbles causing them to jack and potentially fracture, as well as sugaring of some of the sculptures. To deal with the corroded iron skeleton, it was necessary to carefully dismantle and partial dismantle some of the monuments. The core was then allowed to dry out before new steels were installed. Interestingly, when the monuments were dismantled a number of masonry elements from the demolished medieval chancel were discovered as rubble within the core. The works also involved re-carving of some

small elements. For instance, the spindle which is held by the putto in the foreground of Mary, Duchess of Montagu’s monument had been stolen a number of years previous. Archival research enabled a replica spindle to be carved. This element, as explained, is key to the interpretation of the scene. Morpheus’s hand also required replacement. The original had severely deteriorated, such that it was completely lost. Analysis determined this to be due to unstable mineralogy of the statuary marble, or at least, a mineralogy unstable in the existing environment. The monuments all received thorough cleaning to restore them to their original finish. The workmanship – both of the original sculptors and conservators – is astonishing. The figures, both celestial and earthly, are truly glorious. Nothing I can write can ever do them justice. You simply need to visit and let them take your breath away. STAMFORD LIVING OCTOBER 2015

UPDATES

The Woodnewton Potter: Rob Bibby Annabel Spain writes: n the quaint village of Woodnewton, a small Methodist chapel lies tucked between the rows of homes. The current owner is Rob Bibby, who creates and paints his own pottery which is displayed in many local exhibits and galleries, including the chapel itself. In the years before Rob invested in the Methodist chapel he studied 3D art in Arts School which was based in Cardiff, before making the decision to let pottery become his profession. During the 1970s Rob had lived in both Canada and France, developing his pottery skills and techniques before moving back to England to teach pottery part-time. Ron purchased the Methodist chapel in 1989 and has transformed it into an arts and crafts workshop, which gave rise to a wide range of local talents including wood working and pottery. As the volume of pottery increased it seemed more space was needed, so in 1997 the chapel became converted solely to producing, displaying and selling the pottery which Rob creates. Rob’s pottery designs are inspired and influenced from China and the Middle East. His work is described as decorated functional pottery and always has a delightful burst of colour. The use of a mixed pallet allows Rob’s emotions to be expressed through the illustrations of animals and nature. Rob creates a large variety of vibrant pots, dramatic bowls, curvaceous teapots, and many more. The form of each piece varies as all of Rob’s work is made by hand with the aid of a potter’s wheel and a creative spark. The Methodist chapel offers pottery workshops for everyone, with a mix of beginners and those who are more advanced. The workshops give the opportunity to create artwork with the help of potters’ wheels, tools, Kilns and a wide range of glazes. Many of Rob’s students who have been attending the workshops for many months, now exhibit and sell their own work. The workshops encourage your own creations, as you can make almost anything from small bowls or plates to large hare sculptures. Your own imagination will be encouraged by Rob to become infused with life and coated in clay. • Workshops are held Tuesday mornings and evenings but visitors should phone before attending. Tel: 01780 470866. 43 Main Street, Woodnewton, Peterborough, PE8 5EB www.robbibbyceramics.co.uk Rob is currently selling his work at Art in the Heart (Peterborough), Dolby Gallery (Oundle), and at his Workshop (Woodnewton).

Stamford School Student Receives School Maasai Warrior Troupe Performing in Stamford Physicist of the Year Award

The renowned Osiligi Maasai Warrior Troup will be performing at All Saints’ Church, Stamford, on Saturday, 24th October at 7pm

Year 13 student at Stamford School, Douglas Douglas, recently received a School Physicist of the Year award from the University of Lincoln, in association with the Ogden Trust

A

T

he Ogden Trust aims to create opportunities for young people across the UK in the fields of science, particularly physics. Every year they run a nation-wide Schools Physicist of the Year award, which recognises the most promising A-level physics students in the region. The winner receives a prize from the Ogden Trust, and are also eligible for undergraduate science scholarships. Douglas is one of the Samford Endowed Schools’ most gifted physicists, and his efforts and achievements were recognised by the University of Lincoln, who have now encouraged him to pursue physics for further study. At the awards evening held at Lincoln’s campus, the head of the school of Physics and Mathematics, Professor Andrei Zvelindovsky, gave a lecture on the application of physics and how it stretches beyond commonly perceived areas of research. Dr Maunela Mura, Senior Lecturer in the School of Mathematics and Physics at Lincoln University, said to Douglas “Your achievements have highlighted you as a worthy recipient of this award. These awards are important to encourage you in your studies, both next year and in the future as well as acting to inspire future students to follow in your footsteps.” Douglas’ Mother, Mrs Joanna Douglas, said “Needless to say, we are so proud of him and how well he is doing under the guidance of Stamford School.”

Since then, together with the spin off charity, Osiligi Charity Projects, they have succeeded in raising their community from abject poverty, providing clean water, solar powered lighting, a school with 165 pupils (all with UK sponsors) a medical centre and church. Stamford Shops Memories of the Co-op in Stamford It is amazing how many people have told us they remember their Co-op ‘divvy’ number’! They also recall the Co-op shops and deliveries in Stamford. BM told us about working in the furnishing department as a teenager. Mr Thorpe was the Manager and there were three assistants. It was especially busy at Sale times when extra goods were brought in. For Mick Warby our article brought back many memories and we are pleased to include parts of his detailed account. He started as a delivery boy at the Co-op in August 1951, three days after his 13th birthday, firstly at Doughty Street then a week later he was transferred to the High Street grocery shop. “Deliveries were still made by horse and van when I started and I well remember proudly sitting up front with Danny the driver as we trotted down High Street. I think I was the last boy to have this experience and this happened only once because a week or two later they changed to using motorised vehicles. I then had to use a trade bike like all the other boys. “The horse, mentioned earlier, was stabled at the Wharf Road yard, now Watergate, and was looked after by the late George Tee. George’s love of horses obviously continued because we have a photo of our two daughters mounted on a pony with George holding the reins, which was taken at a garden fete around l970. “I worked in the shop after school for two hours each weekday and on Saturday mornings until I left school, two years later. When I was not making deliveries my jobs in the warehouse included weighing out potatoes, pig

34

Previous articles about Stamford shops have triggered many people’s memories. ‘Leo’ is pleased to share some recollections and pictures on these two pages.

meal and chicken feed; also, helping to make up customers’ orders. I worked in the cellar removing the covering from large drum shaped cheeses. In the shop I stocked the “fixtures” with Items I collected from the cellar, warehouse and first floor stockrooms. Sometimes we would form a team to pack smaller items like sugar or dried fruit which came in large sacks or boxes. I would put approximately the correct amount into a one or two pound bag. The second person would weigh and correct the amount, the third would close the bag.”

west corner of the shop took you below the warehouse. ”I really enjoyed my work there and still remember Mr. Chapman on the provisions counter telling so many customers that whatever they were buying he had had “a bit for his tea the night before”. I also remember a lady in Essex Road who used to come into the shop five minutes before closing time and insisting on having her order delivered that day. It was hard work cycling up to Essex Road but great fun going back down to the shop.”

High St Co-op Store

Butchers in Red Lion Square

“During my time the main building was shared between the houseware department managed by Mr. Crown and later by Mr. Thorpe and the grocery shop managed by Mr. Seaton. The “cottage” half (shown on the right of the picture) was the butcher’s shop. The gates between the two buildings closed off the cobbled yard. From the street there were two doors into the grocery shop with the cashier’s department between and display windows on either side. “The shop was served by a zip wire system with five or six positions around the counters where the shop assistant could propel the customer’s cash across the shop in detachable cups using the overhead wire to the cashier in her cubicle. The shop had “fixtures” around three walls and counters in front. The manager’s office was on the right-hand side and access to the first floor was by stairs opposite. To continue further would take you into the warehouse where on the west wall a large door opened on to a loading platform and the cobbled yard. Stairs down from the south

Thank you to JF who pointed out that Hazel’s butchers shop was at 6 Red Lion Street not Red Lion Square. He remembered it from the 1950s. Another reader sent a list of 22 butchers and 6 pork butchers who were in Stamford in the 1920s and 1930s including Hazel’s so it was probably there for about 50 years. GC, great-grandson of George Pepper Burrell (8 Red Lion Square) contacted us to say that Burrell’s grandmother had been Mary Pepper before she married. He wondered if there was a family connection with the Peppers of 3 Red Lion Square that had encouraged him to become a butcher when his father was a publican and brewer. Although a relationship seems likely we have not been able to find it and John Pepper’s father was a wheelwright so he was not following in his father’s footsteps either. Having taken on the shop when he married aged only 21yrs, Burrell stayed less than 10yrs before he moved onto pastures new – but that is another story.

Johnsons Butchers Peter and Gwenda Johnson have provided this wonderful collection of photographs of Johnsons, a family butchers in Stamford for many years.

Albert Robert Johnson had a butchers shop at 2 All Saints’ Street (now Raj of India). He also ran the abattoir at Alma Place. His sons Sam and Peter both joined the family business.

Sam moved to Bourne and Peter took over the shop at 11 All Saints’ Place (now Prezzos) formerly owned by Wright’s. There was a bakehouse at the back for making pies and cooked meats. The picture shows the staff with Peter on the right and Gwenda next to him.

The Monday market and annual Christmas Show were important socially and for trade. Peter met local farmers and the auctioneers who were friends. The Mayor always attended the Show and there was always a competition between the butchers to buy the champion beast. STAMFORD LIVING OCTOBER 2015

Natural Stone Bathrooms in Stamford Natural Stone Bathrooms is pleased to announce the opening of its new showroom in All Saints’ Street, Stamford

C

O-OWNER Eddie Bowles says; “We aim to offer a wide selection of natural stones that will complement homes in and around Stamford. With our emphasis on natural stone products it seemed a logical step to open in Stamford where natural stone and brick houses are in abundance; we feel sure that our products will sit beautifully within this environment. “When a customer enters our showroom we want them to be able to see a selection of bathrooms that show what can be done and how they will look. When a customer has decided they would like to invite us to quote we would then arrange for one of our survey and design team to visit the customer’s home, the designer would discuss what the customer wanted and also what they did not want, then take note of all the requirements from the customer and complete a survey of the bathroom ensuring everything will fit as the customer desires. “Once the materials have been chosen , our design team will then design the bathroom to the specifications requested by the customer; we will then revisit the customer’s home and show computer generated images of how the bathroom will look, as it would be when completed by our fitting team. This allows the customers to take the guesswork out of how it would look in their home. “What makes us different is that we make all our own units; our tiled units are all bespoke and made to measure for each individual bathroom. We ‘bull nose’ all our tile edges, we are the only company in the U.K. that offers this as a standard service - with ‘bull nosed’ edges the whole appearance of the bathroom looks softer and also eliminates the need for tile trims. We make all bathroom furniture including bespoke mirrors and skirting, we truly are a one stop shop for people wanting to renovate their bathroom. “We started as a building and home improvement company over 30 years ago and it is only in the last 7 years that we decided to

focus more of our attention on bathrooms. We have finished many bathrooms in that time and all of our clients came as recommendations from previous clients. “Our competitive pricing policy means that we can compete with any bathroom store, even D.I.Y. people can come to us and buy their tiles and adhesives at very competitive prices and our very experienced and knowledgeable staff are only too pleased to help and give advice where required. We aim to exceed our customers’ expectations and from our experiences over the last 7 years of fitting bathrooms, we are getting it right.” Why not come and take a look round the impressive new showroom.

NORTH NORFOLK STROLLS

Holkham Park Holkham Hall is one of the great houses of the 18th century and it comprises 3,000 acres parkland that makes for a very pleasant stroll POINTS OF INTEREST Holkham Walks and Bike Rides Holkham has a superb choice of walking and bike routes. In addition to the one featured, the yellow arrows are for the lake walk, the red arrows are for the farm walk and the brown, blue and white arrows indicate the cycle routes. If you are feeling energetic, you could happily add on the yellow route at Point 7 of this walk – that would add 3kms (1.9 miles) to your route. Find out more at www.holkham.co.uk

Holkham Hall is one of England’s finest examples of the Palladian revival style of architecture. The Coke family has lived there continuously since the 1750s and take great pride in sharing the house and its treasures, the Deer Park and Holkham Beach with visitors. The Obelisk Work to the designs of William Kent on the park commenced in 1729, several years before the house was constructed. This event was commemorated by the construction in 1730 of the obelisk, 80 feet high, standing on the highest point in the park.

PIT STOPS The Victoria Inn (NR23 1RG) has a delightful interior and good food, plus a pretty garden out front. Right by the bus stop, too. 01328 711008 Café in the Park While the former stables and pottery buildings are being transformed (during 2015), the café has been relocated to the park, overlooking the lake.

Orangeries and Garden Rooms QKS has just installed a new Orangery in its Cherryholt Lane showroom. It is a structure of great beauty and craftsmanship, which thoroughly merits a closer look.

N

ick Clipston, the owner, described some of the attractions of the Orangery: “Because it’s made of hardwood, you have the opportunity to create great detailing and features that allows it to blend in seamlessly with a period home. Or you could fashion it in a more contemporary style. And everything is bespoke, so you can have exactly the dimensions and finishes that you desire. The Orangery in the showroom is extra height, giving all the advantages of a classic period room whilst being flooded with light from the lantern lights above. Finished off with a pair of classic doors leading to the main house, it instantly becomes an integral part of your home. There are also several other conservatories on show to take a look at, from the ultra modern to the traditional. QKS are also specialists in doors and windows, and no job is too small. And a complete after sales service is provided, all backed by a full 10 Year Guarantee. • Showroom: Unit 4, Cherryholt Road, Stamford PE9 2EQ. MOTORING NEWS

On the road News and reviews, compiled by Jonathan Craymer

Game-changing new Astra due at Marshalls

Motorpoint and Posh stars clean up for charity Peterborough United stars Jermaine Anderson, Kyle Vassell and Kgosi Ntlhe rolled up their sleeves to clean fans’ cars for charity at the city’s branch of Motorpoint, the UK’s largest independent car retailer. For each car cleaned by the three players, Motorpoint donated £50, meaning that for eight cars washed, £400 was raised, plus £200 donations by customers. The exercise at the car supermarket’s Peterborough site on Edgerley Drain Road took place under the watchful gaze of the club’s giant rabbit mascot Peter Burrow, while it was filmed for the club’s popular YouTube channel. Everyone who had their cars washed by the players went into a prize draw to win a brand new Peterborough United 2015-16 home shirt. Chris Goodison, General Manager of Motorpoint Peterborough, said: “We were really pleased to have raised so much on behalf of Peterborough and Fenland Mind, which works hard to improve mental health in the region.” Alex Harris, Commercial Manager at Peterborough United, added: “We’re always looking at different ways in which we can support our partners and the car wash is a unique way to do just that for Motorpoint – raising lots of money for charity in the process. The players really enjoyed it and said it was great to do something for such a worthy cause.” Motorpoint, which has seven other locations in Birmingham, Burnley, Chingford, Derby, Glasgow, Newport and Widnes recently agreed to sponsor the Posh players’ training kits for the next two seasons. This complements its on-going naming rights agreement for the 2,500 allseater Motorpoint Stand which runs until the end of the 2016-17 season. Motorpoint employs over 600 people and was named one of the Top 100 Mid-Sized Companies to Work for in 2015 by the Sunday Times and in 2014 Ultimate Digital Car Supermarket by Auto Trader. Its UK-based call centre sells over 1,000 vehicles a month. • www.motorpoint.co.uk • www.theposh.com and www.youtube.com/user/ThePoshOfficial

BMW X1 Another significant new launch this month (on the 24th) is BMW’s new XI compact Sports Activity Vehicle model. First launched in 2009, the XI has been a huge success, selling more than 730,000 globally - nearly 40,000 of those to UK buyers. The all-new version has dynamic BMW X styling, a sporting character blended with outstanding efficiency, and an array of innovative

Perhaps one of the most significant new mainstream models in years - Vauxhall’s all-new British-built Astra - is due to arrive at Marshall Vauxhall in Peterborough later this month. You may have seen pictures of the excitingly sleek new model, shown for the first time at last month’s International Motor Show in Frankfurt. What’s generating the excitement is that this model will set new standards in looks, spaciousness, efficiency and on-board technology. Set to be built at Vauxhall’s Ellesmere Port plant in Cheshire, the new Astra will be up to 200kg lighter than the outgoing model – but thanks to the cleverness of the design, it’ll be smaller on the outside and bigger inside. Both petrol and diesel units ranging from 100PS to 200PS will be offered, including an all-new 1.4-litre (145PS) ECOTEC Direct Injection Turbo, a four-cylinder unit from the same family as the one-litre, three-cylinder engine seen in the Corsa. The new Astra will also be the first all-new Vauxhall to feature OnStar technology, offering high-speed 4G LTE mobile network, emergency response notification and stolen vehicle recovery technology. It’ll also be one of the first vehicles from a mainstream manufacturer to have Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, available through a new version of the IntelliLink infotainment system. Mark Greenacre, Sales Manager at Marshall Vauxhall in Peterborough says: “The all-new Astra will lift the bar in terms of quality, design and connectivity. It looks set to shake up the C-segment when it arrives in our showroom this autumn.” • www.marshallweb.co.uk/vauxhall

equipment features in comfort, safety and infotainment. At launch there’ll be one petrol and three diesel engines on offer, part of an all-new range of engines and gearboxes, not to mention the latest, ultra-efficient version of the xDrive all-wheeldrive system. Clearly excited at the impending new arrival, Nathan Owen sales executive at BMW Sycamore told us: “The new X1 follows on from the modern

styling and body structure of the X3 and X5 models and with more modern engines. We’re constantly striving to increase both speed and efficiency, and the sophistication of the X1 amply demonstrates this. “The X1 is aimed at a broad audience, including families and anyone looking for practicality and a decent ride-height, while being able to accommodate everything from baby buggies to golf clubs.” • www.sycamorebmw.co.uk

You won’t find high pressure salesmen here, says Marshall Vauxhall What’s your view of car salesmen? Pushy? Condescending? Making promises they don’t keep? Marshall Vauxhall listened to customer feedback, and decided to offer customers a wholly different sales experience. Motoring editor Jonathan Craymer reports on an initiative which could change car retailing in our region for good

(L to R) Bobby Joe Elvin, Paul Trundley and Mark Greenacre

W

HAT have a McDonald’s manager, a hairdresser and bartender, and a personal trainer got to do with selling cars? Answer: absolutely nothing. And that’s the whole point according to Mark Greenacre, sales manager at Marshall Vauxhall in Peterborough, who has been deliberately seeking out sales people who aren’t from a car retailing background. This is one dealership which has decided to cast off the old image of high pressure car sales - instead taking on people who are good at putting customers at their ease and placing their needs first. “The industry’s moved on from the days of hard sell,” says Mark, who is clearly - along with the rest of the team here - confident that what they’re doing will work out well for them and

46

their customers. “We’re concentrating on offering a fantastic experience, in which we deliver on promises and there’s no hard sell. We’re now all about listening to customers and making sure that the car and any finance packages discussed are really what the customer needs, and not just something we want to sell.” Marshall Vauxhall admits it hasn’t always got it right in the past. “One customer last weekend told me he came here two years ago intending to buy a car, but ended up being dissatisfied and walking out. He purchased a vehicle elsewhere. However he did come back recently, having heard about our new approach. This time he was delighted with the way we treated him and his family – which led to him making a purchase. I know it should be obvious, but so

many dealerships fail to get it right. The formula ought to be: look after the customer, and they’ll look after us - by making a purchase.” Mark was recruited from Marshall’s Toyota franchise in King’s Lynn in the middle of 2015, because of his good reputation and he immediately set about recruiting sales staff with the right people skills. “We concentrated on employing people from outside the industry. A great example is Paul Trundley, who worked in McDonald’s after leaving school and eventually became a branch manager. He was used to ensuring his team delivered excellent service, and he’s successfully transferred those skills here. “Another of our new intake is Bobby-Joe who’s worked in construction – which taught him team-work – and he’s also worked in a bar

STAMFORD LIVING OCTOBER 2015

in Greece, then hairdressing. Another, Jamie, is a former personal trainer, again with great people skills, who will have joined us by the time this appears. “We interviewed a lot of people and chose very carefully those we took on. We knew exactly what we were looking for and in all cases could see how easily they related to people. Our instincts proved correct. Whether the customer is a single female, a married couple with kids or a retired couple, we must to accommodate their needs. “I’m married with three kids. You see a lot of people come in with children and they’re worried about them running riot, but let me say a hundred percent genuinely we don’t mind that. A lot of us here have children and we want to make sure people feel comfortable when bringing their families in.” Marshall Vauxhall’s aim, he says, is to become the best car retailer in town. “We want to be seen in that light by customers and by our colleagues at other centres around Peterborough. We want this dealership to be a great place to work and a great place to do business. For most customers, after buying a house, a car is one of the biggest purchases you make. We want to make sure they make the right choice, so hopefully they’ll want to come back next time!” If Mark himself went into a dealership, how would he like to be treated? “I’d want to be spoken to like a human being. The person looking after my family and I should put us at ease, and give us an honest, genuine experience without stringing us along. Outside the car retailing industry, we aspire to the reputation for service and honesty enjoyed by retailers like John Lewis.” He and his colleagues are keenly aware that these days the Internet and other electronic platforms play a huge part in customers’ research before they even visit their first dealership. “On average customers only make 1.7 visits to dealerships before purchasing, which means we’ve got to get it right from the moment anybody walks through the door. “Have they looked for hours and hours, as many do? Or have they done very little? We want to fit seamlessly into that process. If you haven’t done much research we want to assist you by running through everything. On the other hand if you’ve done a lot of work beforehand, we won’t bore you by talking about specs for an hour. If you know exactly what you want, then that’s fantastic – let’s get out on the road as quickly as possible. “Having said that, we always try to see if we can find something that suits the customer even better. We’ll ask how they’ve used their car in the last seven days. Do they want a 5-door instead of a 3-door, if they’re giving a lot of lifts for instance. The same goes for diesel and petrol. If you’re a low mileage user, is diesel really right for you? The point is, we genuinely want to sell you the right car, with the right finance package – while making the whole process enjoyable. That way we believe we can change customers’ attitude to car retailing, and help bring the whole industry into the 21st century.”

Fast food to fast cars Paul Trundley, 21, joined a local branch of McDonald’s after leaving school and eventually became a branch manager. So why has he joined the sales team at Marshall Vauxhall? “It’s all to do with customer service,” he grins. “I wanted to try something different and I like cars. I was offered brilliant training here, and thought – why not? It’s a good fit, bringing my customer service experience into an industry where I think it’s needed. So far customers seem to be responding well.” What does he personally think of the typical car salesman? “A lot of people, myself included, used to think salespeople were too pushy. What they’re trying to do here is take that out of the equation. It’s all about giving customers a great experience, which is fantastic. I’ve only been here a few weeks, but I love it.”

Hospitality background helps Bobby-Joe Elvin ‘s CV includes bar work, hairdressing and construction - leaving him with the ability to get on with people and put them at ease. One of this 24-year-old’s first tasks on joining the sales team here was to ‘mystery shop’ (ie. pretend to be a customer) at three other garages. He says it was an eye-opening experience, as he realised how overbearing sales staff in some garages can be. “People don’t want to be dealt with aggressively. They want the person looking after them to be transparent and open. ‘Be honest with them and they’ll be honest with you’, is my motto. “The great thing about working here is that they clearly also value me, which in turn has helped me treat customers well. This approach has come from the top at Marshall Vauxhall and I believe it’s going to work brilliantly.” STAMFORD LIVING OCTOBER 2015

UPDATES

The flourishing Sowden Wallis’ letting business It’s been nearly 18 months since Sowden Wallis opened its doors, and it’s clear to see this independent estate agency is going from strength to strength

T

he team has more than doubled in size since they first opened, as both the sales and lettings side of the business continue to grow month on month - Sarah Scrimshaw has joined to assist in the sales department and Lisa Miles to assist in the lettings department. Emma Sowden told SL: “The lettings department has seen huge growth, which we believe is due to the hands on approach they have to both the letting of properties and the property management. “Having over 12 years experience in Lettings gives Emma a wealth of experience in the field which she can pass on to her clients to ensure the lettings process is as smooth as possible. Over the years you hear too many negative comments from both landlord and tenants with regards to how they are treated by letting agents; something they strive to do is to show how different an experience dealing with Sowden Wallis can be. They offer both a fully managed and let only service, covering everything from their offices on Star Lane. “We pride ourselves on having an in-depth knowledge of each and every property we deal with, as everything is dealt with in-house, so both our landlords and tenants know they are in safe hands”. And it’s clear to see that the hands-on approach is working - their client reviews and testimonials speak for themselves, all positive and full of thanks for the hard work the Sowden Wallis team provide: “Emma Sowden was the Senior Manager of my house in Stamford for

3 years. She was completely professional at all times dealing with both the tenant and myself as the landlord in ALL aspects of property rental. If you are considering buying, renting or selling your property I would highly recommend Sowden Wallis. Brilliant Team.” So if you are looking for a professional independent lettings service or advice on renting your home then please contact Emma or Lisa on 01780 754737. • Sowden Wallis, 3 Star Lane, Stamford, PE9 1PE. The Loomes watch business goes from strength to strength, with Robina and Robert both being awarded Fellowships this summer: Robina’s is from the RSA (Royal Society of Arts Manufacturing and Commerce) as MD of Loomes & Co. Her classic quote “if the 20th century was about globalisation then the 21st century is about localisation”, and her obsessive support for not just British made but Locally Made was cited in her award. There are proven economic benefits to this approach in manufacturing, where either you make it on site or choose the nearest possible supplier. Loomes & Co support over twenty specialist engineering firms within a forty mile radius of Stamford and are both training and expanding a highly skilled workforce in Stamford. Robert’s award is from the British Horological Institute, the professional body for the clock

and watch industry. Like a lot of these organisations, Member and Fellow is by examination but once every few years the Institute promotes a Member to Fellow “by eminence” because they have made “a contribution to the field of horology deemed to be of exceptional value”. Working with the Institute of Advanced Manufacturing, via Nottingham University, Robert developed a Patent Pending widget: a single wristwatch component which can replace three components in a normal watch and remove significant errors in the assembly process. As Robert reflected, “It demonstrates we Brits can still outwit the Swiss in innovation and cleverness”. • Robert Loomes FBHI, 4 St Mary’s Hill, Stamford, PE9 2DP. PROPERTY VIEWS

Sorry did I mention the Ghost of Sir Walter De Bolbec moans in the spare room at night? Robert Goodwin takes a wry look at the legislation changing the everyday business of the property industry and why it’s not just a simple case of finding a buyer or tenant

W

HENEVER I let my mind wander, I become quivery lipped and frightened thinking about all the things you could do ten years ago that you cannot do now. You may not smack your children, for instance, or order a simple coffee without facing the judgement of a ‘Barista’. ‘Is that a tall, non-fat, half-shot, extra hot, extra whip, frap-alap, thingamajig?’ Or put too much salt on your mashed potato, or smoke at home if your cleaning lady objects, or give your dog a tender burial, or indeed encourage your dog to kill rats (although to be fair those who know Pip, our excuse for a Jack Russell, will realise this is a rubbish notion!) If I put the wrong thing in the wrong coloured dustbin, I’m likely to spend the next the next five years working in a salt mine. Outside my little world, things are even worse. Officials have banned sack races on school sports days because some competitors could fall and hurt themselves. Trawlermen must throw everything they catch back into the sea. The makers of beer must tell their customers to drink responsibly. Even at Hunstanton beach the other year a sign appeared warning happy sunbathers that sand in the dunes was a trip hazard! Even in our business Letting agents will be flogged and fined for not checking the immigration status of tenants and Estate Agents will be being locked up for not checking if the buyer or seller is ‘cleaning’ dirty money or indeed using it for the purpose of funding terrorism. It is easy to spot a dodgy deal if men in shades and limos turn up to sign a contract but Money Launderers, drugs dealers and terrorists are far too clever to be caught by Joe Muggins the Estate Agent being a good boy and propping up an industry that’s grown up to facilitate this checking process. After we’ve done it the Lawyers do it again. The whole process is not really fit for purpose. Agents are now also tasked to reveal awkward facts such as a house being located on a noisy road, or having a smelly take-away or noisy club nearby, or if neighbours own badly disciplined pets – even if these revelations mean

a property falls in value as a result. Previously, selling and letting homes in the UK had been largely unregulated, with only two major pieces of legislation applied to the industry. These were the 1979 Estate Agency Act, setting out how agents should behave, and the influential 1993 Property Misdescriptions Act (PMA) specifying standards for accurate marketing of homes in brochures, websites or in discussions with prospective buyers. But the Government – lauded by the property industry back in 2010 for scrapping earlier consumer legislation, Labour’s Home Information Packs – repealed the PMA. Instead, it insists estate and lettings agents abide by the Consumer Protection from Unfair Trading Regulations (CPRs) of 2008 It also put an end to the adage “caveat emptor” or “buyer beware”, which placed all the emphasis on the purchaser to “discover” any problems about a property or location. The property industry (and everyone else) has been operating under these regulations since 2008 but they really came to the fore in October 2013 when the Property Misdescriptions Act (PMA) was repealed. Consumer Protection regulations are however much wider-reaching than the PMA, which was narrowly defined to just 33 “specified matters”. Also, the PMA only affected estate agents whereas CPR cover all businesses

and so include lettings agents too. In a nutshell, five forms of unfairness are identified and agents have a clear duty to ensure that they comply with all of them. • Misleading actions • Misleading omissions • Aggressive practices • Failing to show professional diligence • Engaging in a banned practice The industry has lived by caveat emptor since Adam was a boy and, whilst it may not be dead, it is certainly terminally ill, as it is no longer specifically up to a buyer (or tenant) to find out, but for the seller or landlord (or agent) to inform. So if you think you live in a ‘fairytale castle’ don’t be surprised if your agent describes it as something else, unless you can prove you have a magic beanstalk leading to the front door. The plethora of new and changing regulations coming into force year by year is mind boggling for businesses in general. I’m not suggesting all these changes are bad or some not needed but some of these schemes are proof that the machine has gone off its rocker with men in high viz jackets enforcing its avalanche of new laws and locking up or fining people who may be innocent. And you know what scares me most of all? It’s like the internet. We can never turn it off. STAMFORD LIVING OCTOBER 2015

STADFAS

David Lankester writes: Stamford Decorative and Fine Arts Society (STADFAS) will be 25 years old this November. It is affiliated to the National Decorative and Fine Arts Society (NADFAS), which is a leading arts charity that opens up the world of the arts through a network of local Societies, like STADFAS. We work to advance decorative and fine arts education and appreciation, alongside promoting the preservation of artistic heritage. STADFAS provides ten high quality lectures a year, covering a wide range of artists, art forms and art history. These are presented by accredited and experienced visiting speakers and last approximately one hour. In addition to the lecture programme, STADFAS offers other benefits to improve access to the arts, which include two Special Interest Mornings held locally. There are also two full day visits to places of art or art history interest and two Study Tours abroad. All of these are charged for separately. STADFAS contributes to local art and art history projects with teams of volunteers currently working as Church Recorders at St Andrew’s Church in Thornhaugh and Heritage Volunteers conserving Stamford ephemera at Stamford Town Hall. The Society also wants to inspire future generations through its Young Arts programme. The next event, for primary school children, will be held at St Gilbert’s Primary School this October. With almost 400 members, STADFAS is a welcoming and vibrant Society. If you’d like to find out more about the Arts and make new friends then come and see us in action. The Society lectures are held on the second Tuesday of each month (except July and August). They take place in Barn Hill Methodist Church at 10.45am. Annual Membership. £38. (Guests can come to individual lectures for £5.) For more information, please look at our website: www.stadfas. org.uk or contact our membership secretary, Judy Baxter on: judy.baxter@virgin.net

Hands On Rosalind Rodway writes: Hands On is a group for people living with secondary cancer. These days, more and more people are living with this condition and leading relatively normal lives, though perhaps with certain physical limitations and restrictions. When a person is diagnosed with secondary cancer, the focus will be on how to maintain a good quality of life for as long as possible, the challenge being to live in the here and now. Trying to come to terms with the loss of energy or physical limitations and living with the unknown, can be a struggle and

The Inner Wheel

Zena Coles writes: One of the best kept secrets is Inner Wheel! What is Inner Wheel? One of the largest voluntary women’s organisations in the world - www. innerwheel.co.uk. Here in Stamford we have two clubs – the original Stamford club which meets on the first Monday evening of each month for a meal and meeting and Stamford Burghley Club which meets on the third Thursday of each month. Inner Wheel was founded in Manchester in 1924 with the following objectives: • To promote true friendship • To encourage the ideals of personal service • To foster international understanding. Clubs meet regularly and have a full and varied programme through which friendships are built and maintained. Visiting other clubs and joining in their activities broadens the opportunity to make new friends. Membership is now open to any woman regardless of age, who feels they would like to make new friends but also help charities both at home and abroad. There is an annual subscription. If you feel this is for you please contact Zena Coles (zena.coles@ btinternet.com) or telephone on 01780 740550 for more details. We look forward to hearing from you.

often isolating and lonely. Anxiety and stress can play a large part in exacerbating pain of discomfort for someone who finds themselves in this position. A relaxing treatment such as massage, reflexology or Reiki may reduce anxiety and stress and ease pain or discomfort. Investigations and procedures that are a necessary part of monitoring a patient with secondary cancer can traumatise the body, so that touch becomes a negative experience. Having a soothing treatment allows the body to feel touch as positive, comforting and reassuring. The group will meet every second Thursday of each month.at Tinwell Village Hall. There

will be a charge of £5.00 per person to cover the cost of hiring the hall, which hopefully can be reduced when more people attend. Tea and coffee will be served. If you would like to join us for coffee, a chat and a relaxing treatment, or just to find out whether it could suit you, please email me – rosalind.rodway@virgin.net Correction: Our apologies for mis-spelling the Cummins company name last month. It should also be noted that their badminton club is open to employees, but not to the general public.

BRINGING LOCAL FOOD TO LIFE

Mouthwatering country pubs

Y

OU don’t have to travel far to find a beautiful country pub in our neck of the woods. One quintessential village inn that’s been closed for quite a while but now open again is The Bewicke Arms in Hallaton, south Leicestershire. And its future looks bright. In fact, it’s shot straight up my (very long) pub hitlist. That’s because Tom Cockerill, former chef-proprietor of Leicester’s multi-award-winning Entropy restaurant, has been appointed consultant chef at the Bewicke (which also features an adjoining café – Hare Pie Café). Tom’s previous establishment Entropy was the highest-rated restaurant in Leicestershire in the Good Food Guide for nearly a decade, being nominated as the Midlands’ ‘Reader’s Restaurant of the Year’ as well as ‘Best Newcomer’, and receiving many glowing reviews in the national press. Tom’s reputation has brought him into the fold of the Slow Food UK Chef Alliance, a collective of the UK’s leading chefs who champion ‘forgotten foods’, heritage varieties and small-scale producers throughout the country, one such supplier being his own family’s farm, which produces grass-fed Dexter beef and Southdown lamb, both of which will feature on the Bewicke Arms’ menu. “I’m really excited to be working with The Bewicke’s new owners Simon and Claire Tait to create a new and exciting food offering in south Leicestershire,” said Tom. “The pub will have a creative take on traditional pub food using local produce – an obvious concept, but one only a few pubs in the East Midlands are doing well. The Bewicke Arms is a gorgeous English country pub perfectly located for sourcing from the region’s

60

There are exciting goings-on at some of our region’s most idyllic village inns. Matt Wright has the details…

amazing suppliers and artisan producers.” The Bewicke’s menu will evolve day to day, featuring honest, well-prepared pub classics such as Dexter steak & kidney suet puddings using beef from Tom’s family farm, Brancaster mussels cooked in Bottle Kicking cider (made in Hallaton), as well as game, mushrooms, fruit and herbs foraged from the surrounding countryside throughout the seasons. Owners Clare and Simon Tait said: “We are proud to be working with such an outstanding chef as Tom. The Bewicke Arms is one of the finest traditional pubs in the country and we hope to welcome you very soon!”

Fox & Hounds open again The Fox & Hounds at Exton, which is surely one of our most handsome village pubs, is also open again after an extensive eight-month refurb. Rochelle Bushell, the pub’s new South African owner, said: “Every square inch of the three floors has undergone mammoth upgrading, not only to ensure this grand old lady stands for another few hundred years, but also continues her life as the new Fox & Hounds Hotel.” The changes are significant and include a larger pub, a quiet lounge area/hotel reception, and a dedicated a la carte restaurant. The accommodation, now open, has been renovated to ‘boutique hotel’ standard, and an additional selfcatering two-bedroom suite opens later in the year, together with a gym and sauna room. The restaurant is open from Tuesday to Sunday, 12-2.30pm and 6.309.30pm, and head chef is Omar Palazzolo, formerly of La Gavroche, Nobu and Tom’s Kitchen. Needless to say, The Fox & Hounds has also rocketed up my hitlist!

Good Pub Guide 2016 winners The Red Lion at Stathern is Leicestershire & Rutland’s Dining Pub of the Year in The Good Pub Guide 2016 – the second year in a row it has won the title. Ben Jones, joint-proprietor of The Red Lion with Sean Hope, said: “To win two years in a row is fantastic. The whole team works hard to ensure The Red Lion Inn is a great country pub. This award is the culmination of everyone’s hard work.” Elsewhere locally, The Pheasant at Keyston is Cambridgeshire Dining Pub of the Year 2016, while The Brownlow Arms at Hough-on-the-Hill won in Lincolnshire, The Martin’s Arms at Colston Bassett in Nottinghamshire, and The Falcon at Fotheringhay in Northamptonshire.

The Joiner’s Arms, Bruntingthorpe Another relatively local pub that has caught my attention recently is The Joiner’s Arms at Bruntingthorpe. Run by head chef Stephen Fitzpatrick, The Joiner’s boasts a beautiful location and simply focuses on doing what it does best – serving fantastic food and drink. It has a loyal bunch of in-the-know regulars and is well worth a visit. Try the Auberge Supper on Tuesday nights, where you can enjoy a delicious three-course meal for £16.95. The latest menu featured smoked trout with potato and horseradish salad; slow-cooked pork cassoulet; and treacle sponge in custard.

SEAN HOPE COOKS

Local game The Olive Branch in Clipsham often serves up some very local game birds, says Sean Hope. Photography: Robin Stewart

H

ERE at The Olive Branch we love the game season and like to have a selection of game dishes on the menu whenever possible. If you come to the pub and order pheasant, or possibly pigeon, there’s a good chance it will have come from Morkery Wood near Castle Bytham on the Lincolnshire/Rutland border. Morkery is beautiful wood in Kesteven Forest, and it is home to a pheasant shoot run by old school friends Malc Smith and Nigel Goodson. All of the pheasants shot in Morkery Wood end up on dining tables throughout Rutland and south Lincolnshire, including several here at The Olive Branch. The main reason for this is because my senior chef, Dan Smith, is Malc’s nephew. Dan regularly shoots at Morkery Wood and I’ve joined in once or twice, too. There’s something special about working with game when you know the land where it’s been raised and the people who’ve reared and shot it, which is why I especially enjoy preparing birds from Morkery Wood. My passion for local game comes from my late father – a real countryman who loved his pheasant, grouse, woodcock and venison. November is one of my favourite months for cooking and that’s when I usually produce an eight-course game dinner at The Olive Branch. Last year I prepared fallow venison tartar with seared king scallop and juniper; roasted partridge with game chips and bread sauce; and quince soufflé with white chocolate sorbet. And maybe I’ll do something similar this year. Perhaps I’ll include this wood pigeon dish on the menu…

Warm tartlet of mushroom florentine with breast of wood pigeon SERVES FOUR For the tartlet pastries • 125g plain flour • Pinch of salt • 55g diced butter • 2-3 tbsp cold water • 8cm diameter tartlet moulds 1. Mix flour and salt together in a mixing bowl. 2. Add the diced butter to the flour mix and rub together to a sandy texture. 3. Gradually add the water to bind the pastry. 4. Cut out 9cm diameter circles of pastry and line the tartlet moulds; trim off any excess pastry with a knife. 7. Bake the tartlet pastries blind in a pre-heated oven at 170C (Gas Mark 3) until golden brown. 8. Turn out the pastries. 9. To serve, fill the tarts with the mushroom florentine, top with the sliced roasted breast of wood pigeon and garnish with sautéed diced celeriac and carrot. Mushroom florentine • 100g mushrooms • 1 tbsp finely diced onion

• 100g baby leaf spinach • 1 knob butter • 2 tbsp crème fraiche • Pinch nutmeg 1. Sauté the onion and mushrooms with the butter until golden brown. 2. Add the spinach and creme fraiche to the pan and cook out for two minutes. 3. Season with salt, pepper and nutmeg. 4. Place the mix into the tartlet pastries and top with the sliced roasted wood pigeon. Wood pigeon • 4 wood pigeon breasts, skin removed • Sprig thyme • Garlic clove, crushed • 1 tbsp rapeseed oil • Knob of butter 1. Heat a frying pan, add a drizzle of rapeseed oil and a knob of butter. 2. Add the thyme and garlic, then seal off the wood pigeon breasts for two minutes each side. 3. Season with salt and pepper, then remove pan from the heat and allow to rest for four minutes before slicing and serving.

FOOD & DRINK

The William Cecil The epitome of ‘quirky luxury’, offering a welcome escape from reality. Reviewer: Katy Burrows

N

ow that autumn is here and the nights are drawing in, The William Cecil provides a welcome escape from reality, with its soft and atmospheric lighting and intimate surroundings. My friend Nikki and I arrived on a Friday evening to a warm welcome from Rob, the assistant manager, who seated us next to a fabulous satirical print by James Gillray, the ‘father of the political cartoon’. Part of the Burghley Estate, The William Cecil’s restaurant features an original 18th century fireplace and flooring, contrasting nicely with the wooden panelling and industrial pendant lights. First things first, and soon after taking our seats, we were handed the wine list. My friend Nikki is a bit of a wine connoisseur, so an extensive tasting process took place! After the Chilean Sauvignon Blanc eventually won the battle, we were ready to pay attention to the food. Much to our delight, we were served a complimentary prawn and avocado roulade with a lime crème fraîche. This type of dish is what’s known as an amuse-bouche, a ‘mouth amuser’, and it acted as the perfect palate cleanser before our starters. Nikki’s pankobreaded Cromer crab, lime and coriander cakes was beautifully presented, as was my pan-seared fillet of red mullet, which was accompanied by hand-dived king scallops, crispy bacon and sautéed samphire. The samphire brought all the saltiness of the sea to the plate, and worked well together with the rest of the flavours to create a delicious dish. On to the mains and my roasted venison loin was served with confit potato, English figs and blackberry jus and was mouth-wateringly good, an accolade to Phil Kent, the head chef at The William Cecil, who recently won the title of

Professional Game Chef of the Year at the CLA Game Fair at Harewood House (see picture). Nikki’s scorched breast of Gressingham duck was served with a delicious candied orange, roasted carrot and maple syrup purée and was cooked to perfection. ‘This is superb… it’s the best duck I’ve ever had,’ she enthused. Finally on to the dessert menu, and self-confessed sugar addicts with a tendency towards indecisiveness will be pleased to know there is a sharing platter option. Arriving on a large wooden board was not four, not five, but six delicious desserts – the peanut butter parfait, salted caramel ice cream and lemon meringue pie being personal favourites! The bill arrived with luxury chocolates and elderflower vodka, another little surprise from a venue that knows how to delight its guests. • The William Cecil, St Martin’s, Stamford, PE9 2LJ. Pumpkin Time

Deborah Pennell explores all things pumpkin

A

UTUMN always brings the ‘Cinderella’ out in me – I clean the house from top to bottom, bake lots, fill the freezer with comforting foods and generally settle the house into a cosy nest for the onslaught of winter. Pumpkins embrace so much of Autumn and they are at their most plentiful from late September and all through October. Incredibly hardy, they manage to grow in six out of seven continents in the world. Antarctica being the only continent where they do not flourish. A pumpkin is the cultivated version of a squash plant and a member of the Cucurbita family, which includes the squash and cucumber. They have a long growing season, requiring 75-100 frost-free days. Pumpkins contain potassium and Vitamin A, and are made up of 90% water. They can be used in so many different ways. Their flesh is used in both sweet and savoury dishes and their flowers and seeds are edible.

Pumpkin Festivals and Competitions

Halloween The origins of Halloween date back 3,000 years to the Celtic celebration of Samhain (Summer’s End). This festival was held, starting at sundown on 31st October and lasted until sundown on 1st November. Glowing Jack-OLanterns (carved pumpkins) were set in doorways and windows to welcome deceased loved ones, but also to act as protection against malevolent spirits. Originally burning lumps of coal were used inside as a source of light, which have more recently been replaced by candles. Pumpkin Chunking (Punkin Chunkin) is an American phenomenon. Teams compete to build various mechanical devices designed to launch a pumpkin as far as possible. The devices range from catapults and trebuchets to air cannons. The current Guinness World Record is held by a pneumatic canon named ‘Big 10 inch’ and it flew a staggering 1,690metres! Giant Pumpkin competitions abound all over the world. Grown from the Cucurbita Maxima seed, these pumpkins are tended to an inch of their life, by hugely competitive growers and are eventually harvested ready for the weigh-in, staged at various competitions around the globe. The 2014 World Record Giant Pumpkin was grown by Swiss farmer Beni Meier and weighed in at a humungous 1,054.01kg!

A Quick Autumn Evening Supper Pumpkin, Sage and Spicy Sausage Spaghetti Serves 4 • 800g pumpkin – chopped into small cubes • 1tsp golden caster sugar • 100g butter • 4 large Merguez sausages, sliced into 1cm pieces • approx. 20 sage leaves roughly chopped • 350g dried spaghetti • juice of 1 lemon • 50g grated parmesan • Put cubed pumpkin into a medium-sized pan with a tightly fitting lid. Sprinkle over sugar, a pinch of salt and 6tblsp water. Cover and place on medium heat and steam the pumpkin, stirring every so often for 10-15 minutes – the pumpkin should be soft but not mushy. Put to one side • Fry off sausage in a separate pan until golden. Take it out of the pan and leave to one side. • Put butter and sage into the pan and heat gently until the butter is foaming then turn off heat. • Boil the spaghetti until just cooked – drain but reserve 3-4tblsp of the cooking water. • Put the sage butter over a high heat until sizzling then pour in lemon juice – be careful as it will spit. • Tip pumpkin, melted butter, 3-4tblsp pasta water, sausage and half the parmesan in with the spaghetti and toss together. Add salt and pepper to taste. • Serve with remaining parmesan sprinkled on top. STAMFORD LIVING OCTOBER 2015

“An Apple a Day keeps the Doctor Away” Deborah Pennell On Saturday 3rd October, the 12th Stamford Apple Day will take place, in the Ballroom at Stamford Arts Centre. Running from 10am – 4.30pm. Entry is free. PHOTOS: JOHN UTTLEY

O

rganised by The Stamford Community Orchard Group (SCOG), Stamford hosts one of the country’s largest Apple Day events. Regularly attracting over a thousand visitors, the organisers reckon that this year is set to be bigger and better than ever. As well as bringing along many different varieties of English Apple to exhibit, experts from the East of England Apples and Orchards Project will be offering an apple identification service. There will be lots of stalls selling apple related gifts and produce, fun games for the children such as pin the maggot on the apple and apple bobbing, and the ever popular Tombola. Information on Cider making will be available and apple juicing will take place. In addition to the above, SCOG’s own gurus will be dispensing invaluable advice on how to look after the apple trees in your garden and will try to help solve any problems you may be encountering. Days like this are so important to the local community, bringing together experts and enthusiasts alike. SCOG, a Registered Charity (No.1115719) aims to preserve the old orchards that still exist in Stamford, to establish new orchards and to rediscover old apple varieties. So far the group has planted a Community Orchard in the town, an Allotment at Rutland Water to mark The Queens Jubilee and has a new site on Uffington Road, where they are busy planting different varieties of fruit trees. And there are exciting times ahead for SCOG. As a result of a recent Stamford Apple Day, it is thought that the Stamford Pippin may well

have been rediscovered. At present the apple has been sent off for further investigation and DNA tests but local experts feel, that if confirmed, this could be their biggest find in decades… Fingers crossed! • For more details about the event, contact maria83_jameel@hotmail.co.uk, or call Maria on 01780 484180. The Real Junk Food Project comes to Stamford... Deborah Pennell

O

n Saturday 3rd October the Barn Hill Methodist Church sees the launch of one of Stamford’s most interesting café projects to date. Second Helpings is a new venture built on the principles of the hugely successful national network of Real Junk Food Cafés. Based on an inspirational idea by the founder, Adam Smith, it has come to fruition in Stamford due to George Hetherington, with the help of Rev Andy Fyall, the Church council and enthusiastic members of the public. Second Helpings is working in partnership with the Stamford Methodist church and the whole community to divert food that would otherwise go to waste from cafés, the market and shops to create wholesome food for all of us. The café will be run completely by volunteers from the area all working together, to create sustainable change. As well as the positive environmental impacts of reducing edible food waste the project also has clear social benefits through operating a strictly Pay-as-you-feel policy. On arrival you will be handed an envelope and it is totally at your discretion to leave payment for the food you have just consumed. By making people think about what they wish to contribute for their meals, the idea is to get society visualising how they value food as a resource. It means that if you cannot afford to pay more than 10p for a good meal you will still be welcome. To quote Rev Andy Fyall, it will be “a practical way of experiencing God’s concern for

Above: Adam Smith the founder and inspiration for the project, of the first Real Junk Food cafe Right: Food waste everyone”. To date Stamford Fairtrade Town Group, Transition Town Group, Churches togetherStamford, The Foodbank, The Crown and Riverford Organics are just a few of the businesses who have agreed to contribute in some way to the project. Headed up by Project Manager, Jo Kemp, the café will open its doors on Saturday 3rd October 2015 from 12-2pm and thereafter on Saturday lunchtimes. • If you think you can help by volunteering or supplying food to the project please contact Second Helpings (charity number 1160930). Trial By Jury, is the story of Angelina who sues Edwin for breach of promise, claiming that he has broken his word to marry her. UPDATES

Stamford Country Market Fresh, local produce at great prices Sandra Tipler writes: tamford Country Market sells a range of freshly baked goods: cakes, pastries, desserts, pies, savouries and preserves also seasonal fruit and vegetables. Our cooked items are always freshly prepared and never frozen. On our craft table you will find a wonderful range of handmade greeting cards, fabric items, quilts and jewellery. All goods are labelled in accordance with trading regulations. Look out for our logo, the sign of high quality and genuinely home produced goods. Treat yourself, a friend or relative to some homemade goodies. We take orders for all occasions and with Christmas approaching, do come and view our lovely fabric advent calendars. In the late 60s and early 70s Stamford W.I. Market originated as a part of the Women’s Institute. The founder member of the Market was Mrs. R. Spry-Leverton, along with a team of local ladies. Following the sudden closure of the Stamford W.I. Market in January 1998, it was decided by Rosamond Thorn and other members to form a committee and re-open once more in June that same year. They decided to leave the Darby and Joan Hall and meet in the more centrally located Stamford Arts Centre. If you would like to become a producer, it is very simple to become a member of the market.

S

We are open to everyone over the age of sixteen. It costs a nominal fee of five pence to join and the market will only take a small commission from sales to cover the running costs of the market. All food producers are required to hold a current certificate of food hygiene. If you have the skills to bake goods, sew, produce craft items or have the space to grow fresh produce to sell, why not come and meet our friendly members and possibly join us. • We meet fortnightly, between 9.30 and 12 noon at Stamford Art Centre on the same dates as the local farmers’ market. tylish, elegant, comfortable are not words usually associated with a Care Homes. Country Court Care has broken the mould when it comes to designing and building care homes. Rose Lodge Care Home, Market Deeping is an example of how style and elegance have been incorporated in to the development of a care home. With a £3 million investment from Country Court Care, Rose Lodge has been built from traditional stone, incorporating state of the art design and functionality. Samantha Lord, Owner at Samantha Lord Interior Design, was tasked with designing the home. She wanted to capture an environment which exudes elegance and comfort which can be enjoyed by residents. On the 10th of September, Rose Lodge held an open day, which was attended by many local members of the Market Deeping community. Celebrating the Open Day, the Mayor of Deeping Wayne Lester and Mr Kachra (Chairman of Country Court Care) cut the ribbon. Many guests likened the home to the Ritz Hotel with a piano, luxury surroundings, orangery and beautiful gardens with Olive trees and a pergola. The home is spacious and has a feeling of being in a five star hotel, with the feeling of calm and peace. Supported by a highly trained team of Managers and staff, residents can be assured of the best personalised care. LOCAL PEOPLE

Work gave me the strength to carry on When Felicity Kemp was diagnosed with ME her world fell apart. But instead of crumpling in the face of a debilitating illness she found a new focus and has now doubled the size of her business

F

ELICITY Kemp was a typical ‘work hard play hard’ career girl. With a successful telemarketing business, a nice little house in Stamford and an active social life, everything was looking rosy for this bright, bubbly 26-year-old. However, on New Year’s Day 2012 she began to experience flu-like symptoms – fatigue and achiness – and that’s when everything changed. ‘Four months later I could still barely hold my head up,’ recalls Felicity, now 30. ‘I had to work lying down with my head propped up on a pillow. It took all my energy just to raise my hand to type something on my computer.’ With two companies to run – Talk Results, which provides flexible telemarketing services, and Talk Networking which connects local business people – Felicity had no choice but to carry on working. Eight months later she was finally given a diagnosis of Myalgic Encephalopathy, otherwise known as ME. The illness can cause severe fatigue, joint pain and nausea. There is no known cure for ME and no proven treatment. ‘It was a huge relief when I got the diagnosis because at least it meant I knew what I was dealing with,’ says Felicity. ‘But at the same time I found it very hard to accept that I couldn’t function the way I used to, and that this was an illness which might never go away. ‘Even walking up the stairs can be a huge effort and there are times when my body feels like it’s full of cement. I am in constant pain and doing even the smallest of things takes up a huge amount of energy.’ Gone are the days when Felicity was in the pub with her friends every night. Instead she now leads a quieter life but it’s one which has brought its own rewards. ‘I’ve had to re-evaluate my life and accept that I can’t do all the things I used to do,’ says Felicity. ‘The old me was a complete workaholic and I was intensely stressed. Now I’ve had to get better at prioritising. I’ve also learnt how to delegate which means that my business is actually now run a lot more efficiently than it was before I had ME. Because of that I’ve been able to double my workforce. ‘I’m very lucky in that I absolutely love what I do. I find it so rewarding helping other people grow their businesses with flexible and affordable telemarketing and by running a local business networking group. There have been times when I’ve felt like giving up, but I find what I do really inspiring and that’s what makes me get up in the morning and carry on.’ Another essential element in Felicity’s readjustment to life as a ME sufferer has been the support of her family, friends and fiancé. ‘My partner Asher has been my rock,’ says Felicity. ‘We got together only three days before I became ill so he has only really known me with this illness. It’s been a long hard slog with lots of tears and pain, but he has been with me every step of the way. I don’t know how I would have coped without him.’ In the midst of Felicity’s health problems she has also managed to lose five stone over the last two years. ‘I was told I needed to lose weight to qualify for specialist IVF treatment,’ explains Felicity. ‘My diet was appalling so I removed a lot of carbs and dairy and started a gentle exercise programme. As well as losing weight I found that my energy levels improved, too.’ Felicity and Asher are getting married in December, the IVF process is due to start next year and Felicity is continuing to grow her business. ‘ME has been life changing for me but in some ways it has changed things for the better,’ says Felicity. ‘I’ve reached an incredibly exciting time in my life and I can confidently say that I am now in control of my ME.’

78

Coping withME Felicity shares her tips on how to live life with a painful energy-zapping illness ACCEPT YOUR CONDITION ‘This was a really important stage for me. Until you accept that you’re unable to function the way you did before ME it’s very hard to move on.’ ASK FOR HELP ‘It’s important to ask for help when you need it. Whether that’s from friends and family or by delegating some of your work commitments.’ ALTERNATIVE THERAPIES ‘Mindfulness and Shiatsu have made an enormous difference to how I function with ME. Mindfulness clears my head and Shiatsu recharges my batteries.’
