ell, that worked pretty well weather-wise… welcome back from whatever you have been up to, the kids are back and now it’s time to be a little more serious again, get back to work, re-assess one’s life, maybe finally paint the garage doors. One thing that really seems to be in our favour as we go about our business again is the feel good factor. Businesses are more optimistic than I can remember for several years, unlet shops are filling up again, and the property market is much more lively. The entrepreneurial spirit is returning. And nothing epitomises this more than Stamford’s Lanes, which I write about this month. It is a very attractive feature of the town that we could make much of – incredibly there are 16 in total, with over 70 businesses on them, every one an independent. With more affordable rents and oodles of charm, they are often a good spot for starting up a business, although many subsequently decide they will stay put they like it so much. So here’s to better economic times and the ongoing success of our Lanes.

And this is where the Vacuum Store really stands out from the competition. they will access your needs e.g type of floor surface, allergies, pets/ no pets etc etc and with expert advice establish which new machine is best for you and your home. And naturally, the service remains as the ‘jewel in the crown’ of the offering; but even here there have been improvements, with the workshop also refitted so that turnaround times will be speedier. And of course, every machine is still fully valeted as part of the excellent service. This shop is a joy – combining old-style service with state-of-the art machines and advice. • The Vacuum Store, 18 St Mary’s St, Stamford. o celebrate the 20 years anniversary and to leapfrog the competition once again, he has just completed a complete store re-fit and expansion of his premises in St Mary’s St. “First of all,” Nick explained “I decided to change the name to reflect that we sold a wide variety of brands and that we were involved both in product sales and service. And we are the only vacuum cleaning specialists in the whole region.” “Then I set about redesigning the store so that it is up-to-date for the 21st century,” The result? A massive refreshening and enhancement. The whole store has been laid out anew, all the logos and fascias have been updated and the range has been extended. In the middle of the store there will be a demo area where you can test drive each

Liam Pridmore Memorial Cycle Ride and Fun Day Saturday 7th September

This event started as a small event in aid of raising money for local charities. Over the years the event has got larger with the numbers involved on the day in 2012 rising to around 400. Thus far the Event has raised over £20,000 for local causes. For the last two years the event has been in memorial of Liam Pridmore, a local Glinton and Peakirk boy who tragically died aged 12 from a cancerous brain tumour in 2012. This year the organisers are looking to raise over £5,000 from the ride itself, local contributions and a Raffle with some serious prizes such as a Mini IPad, SMART TV, Camcorder and a host of others. There are 3 rides available on the day; a 50 mile on road event for those who like more of a challenge, a 25 mile ride mostly based around the Green Wheel, and a Kids’ 6 mile ride. All rides are signposted with maps available. The event is also fully insured through the British Cycling Club links with Marshalls; and support vehicles are available for any mechanical failures or injuries. The rides start at around 11.30. After the event the delightful Golden Pheasant in Etton will be providing all day bands and a BBQ with the raffle being drawn at around 9pm. Bands on the day are Tiger Club, Brotherhoods Roundabout, DB5, Code Red, Paul Lake and local acoustic talent Hannah and Dom. This year’s charities are great causes, with The Brain Tumour Charity, Team Jess and The Rudolf Fund all benefiting from the final total collected. • You can call 07919 177901 for more info or contact liammemorialride@gmail.com. Alternatively a Facebook site is available by typing - Liam Pridmore memorial ride.

Celsius Stoves launches in Stamford

A new stove, wood-burning, multi-fuel centre is opening in Stamford in the second half of September, in the old Marshall’s Yard in St Paul’s St between the car wash and the SES school shop. Launched by William Carter, who has been in the business for many years with his father, based out of Sewstern just north of our patch, he felt that there was a big opportunity to launch into a major market town. He already knows the town well as he services the fireplaces at The George Hotel. He is converting an old stables to display his large range of both traditional and contemporary stoves, and we wish him well. His opening day is pencilled in for Sat September 21st. There are three very handy customer parking spaces there too, so simple if you are coming in from the villages. • Celsius of Stamford, Marshalls Yard, 38 St Paul’s Street, Stamford, Lincolnshire, PE9 2BH Tel: 01780 678679 www.celsiusofstamford.com

Prime Location at St Mary’s Place Set within the heart of Stamford, this well presented Grade II * Listed town house dating from the early 18th Century offers grand and imposing accommodation over three storeys with a wealth of individual character and period features. Once inside you can observe the beautiful flagstone flooring in the entrance hall leading to the sweeping original Georgian staircase which glides to all levels. Offering four bedrooms with the principal benefiting from en suite, four reception rooms, good sized family breakfast kitchen and family bathroom, the property also benefits from gas fired central heating, cloakroom and rear lobby. A delightful courtyard with a separate outbuilding has been skilfully converted to a one bed annexe with kitchen facilities and shower room. The rear courtyard is enclosed and provides a private external space which the vendor describes as a lovely “suntrap”. Chesterton Humberts are marketing this property in St Mary’s Place at £795,000. For a selection of Stamford properties or if you would like a market appraisal of your property, please contact Zoe Noyes, Associate Director, Chesterton Humberts on 01780 758090. Alternatively their office on Ironmonger Street displays a range of properties from period town houses to larger village properties including individual new builds, barn conversions, small holdings and substantial country homes.

It’s all happening at the Stamford Garden Centre - their End of Season Sale is now on and all their shrubs are on promotion; if you buy any shrub (including roses) you can get a second half price. Plus all their seeds are 50% off and they have a 3 for 2 offer on several composts as well. Everything is on their newly updated website www.stamfordgardencentre.co.uk and if you follow them on Facebook you can be the first to be updated on all their new promotions. Just click on the Facebook icon on their website. They are also excited to have their new Country Clothing & Furniture shop open and it looks amazing, with top name brands such as Toggi, Musto and a great selection of Joules clothing – it’s really worth checking out and is a great addition to the site. After all that you can relax at the now wellestablished Garden Kitchen restaurant which has become a favourite for those who want homemade quality meals prepared using the best ingredients from their own butchery and the local area - and all their daily specials are on promotion all month at £9.50 for 1 course and £12.50 for 2 courses. • Stamford Garden Centre, Casterton Rd, Stamford, PE9 4BB Tel: 01780 765656

AGELESS BEAUTY Genevieve Potter guides you through some of the products and treatments that can make a visible difference to fifty plus skin

A

s the years advance, wrinkles tend to be the most obvious (and dreaded) sign of ageing. However, there are other indications which are every bit as important to address.

COLOUR PERFECT Hyperpigmentation manifests itself as spots of brownish colour, which are largely caused by environmental damage, particularly UVA light (which is present all year round) and UVB, which is stronger in the summer months. Good sun protection is essential and for the face, neck and décolleté, I’d recommend an SPF of 50 (don’t forget a quick once-over on your hands too). There’s a new generation of products which can help fade “age spots” significantly, as well as reducing any future hyperpigmentation. One of my favourites is Caudalié Vinoperfect Radiance Serum £45 for 30ml, from Chameleon. It’s made from concentrated ingredients derived from grapes and their vines and is packed with antioxidants to defend against hyperpigmentation. Darphin Melaperfect, £50.00 for 30ml, from Essence of Beauty is an alternative perfecting treatment which promises to visibly reduce pigmentation and deliver an even, radiant complexion. Clarins have just launched Vital Light Serum £59 for 30ml, available from Maples. It uses three rare plants to firm, unify and restore a radiant glow. To maximise results, try the Vital Light day and night cream too (pop in to Maples to pick up some free samples for yourself, subject to availability). Decleor’s new dark spot corrector concentrate (£50.50 for 15 ml, from Flawless Faces), can be used on the face as well as the back of hands and has been proven to reduce hyperpigmentation marks by 66% when used daily for 28 days. LIFT AND TONE Loss of muscle tone, particularly in the lower half of the face can be extremely ageing and if, like most people, surgery is too daunting or expensive, there are some great non-surgical options. CACI at Equilibrium is the original computer aided facial toning treatment, backed by 20 years of medical research. Results of the CACI Ultimate Anti-Ageing treatment (£75), are apparent after one treatment; using microcurrent technology, microdermabrasion, light therapy and hydratone, the face appears gently lifted, with a softening of lines and wrinkles. A course of ten is recommended to give long-lasting results with maintenance every four to six weeks. Used at home, the CACI Amino-Lift Peptide complex (£50 for 30ml)

12

will enhance and prolong treatment results; it has been proven to visibly reduce lines and wrinkle depth by 26% after just 28 days. Stamford Living reader offer - book and pay for a course of eight CACI treatments at Equilibrium and receive another two free of charge. Offer valid for bookings made before 30th September 2013. Nu Skin is a system of anti-ageing skin care that you carry out yourself safely and easily at home, using a compact, hand-held device that uses galvanic currents to deliver high-performing Nu Skin formulas to the face, as well as the scalp and body. Galvanic currents aren’t new to the beauty world, but they have the important ability to significantly improve the skin’s absorption of products. Nu Skin is ideal for those who prefer to carry out treatments at home - you need to dedicate 15 minutes, three times a week, first applying a deep-cleansing pre-treatment gel followed by ageLoc treatment gel, which delivers the beneficial ingredients to the skin. Catherine Kaye, who is the Nu Skin distributor for Stamford, says that the programme has transformed her complexion – before she began the programme in 2010 she was “ageing fast and didn’t like it one bit”, but did not want to undergo surgery or invasive treatments. She now has firmer, younger looking skin and looking back at pictures from three years ago, has forgotten all about many of her wrinkles from that time. The best way to find out more about Nu Skin and see a demonstration is to get a small group of friends and family together; for more information please contact Catherine on 07787 505847/ or email kacatheri@aol.com. RESURFACE AND RECHARGE As you enter what’s now considered middle age, regular salon facials have an enormous part to play. The act of a skilled facial massage can in itself provide an instant “lift” and leave your skin glowing. The latest thinking also suggests that rather than looking to mechanical exfoliation (like the old-fashioned, gritty dermabrasion treatments), it’s better to work on re-densifying the skin, to firm and improve its texture and radiance. One range which works on this very principle is Environ at the Advanced Skin Clinic. The Ionzyme Vitamin Treatment facial also uses a combination of electrical pulses and sound waves to drive vital vitamins A,

STAMFORD LIVING SEPTEMBER 2013

C, E and beta-carotene deep into the skin. The treatment stimulates thickening of the dermis, helps to improve collagen and elastin levels, reduces uneven skin tone, hyperpigmentation and increases hydration. The treatment lasts 90 minutes and costs £75.00 - book and pay for a course of six treatments and receive a 10% discount. Essence of Beauty now offers Fusion SLR sonic laser rejuvenation. This incorporates three essential principles; exfoliation, hydration and nourishment/tissue regeneration. Firstly, smooth diamond exfoliation removes dead skin cells for a smoother texture while promoting skin cell renewal. Then, using the latest acoustic wave technology, hyaluron serum is infused into the skin, delivering an instant plumping and smoothing effect. An application of low level lasers activate the hyaluron serum, stimulating the production of collagen and elastin, tightening the skin for a lifted effect. For the month of September, Essence of Beauty are offering this new generation facial for £65.00 per session (saving £15.00) or buy a course of five for 325.00 and get your sixth free. Medik8 is a high-tech “cosmeceutical” range of products and treatments available at Renaissance, which targets all aspects of skin ageing including loss of firmness, lines and wrinkles, redness, dryness and pigmentation. Their newest serum, White Balance Click (£45 for 20 ml) is a highly potent de-pigmenting serum which comes in two clever 10ml bottles so that the product remains completely potent; just click and apply. No-needle mesotherapy at Renaissance is also an excellent antiageing treatment, with many 50 plus fans who have decided against the botox/fillers route. It includes diamond touch microdermabrasion and specialist serums are introduced into the skin using ultrasound. Bring your copy of Stamford Living to Renaissance to receive 20% off a trial of needle free mesotherapy and to find out more about Medik8 - available until 21st September 2013. At Flawless Faces, Decleor have introduced a new Excellence De L’age range using “lipo-filling” technology, with active, skin-firming ingredients. The Excellence De L’age anti-ageing facial (£54) uses natural lifting techniques to stimulate micro-circulation, with nourishing essential oils to boost collagen and regulate pigmentation. During the month of September, when you mention Stamford Living at the time of booking, Flawless Faces will include a complimentary eyebrow wax/ thread with every Excellence De L’age anti-ageing facial. Asembo’s luxurious new treatment rooms are the ideal location for some serious pampering and the 90-minute Lift and Firm facial (£70) is perfect for 50

plus skin; ESPA’s patented spa-strength “superactive” products include the tonicity of the skin and stimulate cellular regeneration, using the latest facial massage techniques. And ESPA’s Regenerating Face Treatment Oil (£65 for 28ml) is the perfect product to use at home, quenching the skin to ease the appearance of fine lines. It contains neroli and sandalwood essential oils and vitamin E-rich avocado and patchouli extracts. Readers of Stamford Living are entitled to 10% off their first ESPA treatments at Asembo for the month of September, when they book mentioning this feature. Mature skin generally lacks the softness and smoothness of a young complexion and at Maples, the Tri-Enzyme resurfacing facial is increasingly popular. It’s a highly relaxing, 75- minute facial which delivers visible resurfacing and smoothing results in a single treatment, reducing lines and wrinkles while stimulating cell regeneration and also reducing pigmentation and scaring. The Tri-Enzyme resurfacing facial normally costs £62, but for the month of September when you mention Stamford Living at the time of booking, it will cost £49.

Discovering Asembo

Genevieve Potter takes a tour of the luxurious new salon, situated in a beautiful period building on Stamford’s St Leonard’s Street. James Parker and partner Natasha have created an exciting new brand for Stamford – Asembo - the name of a Kenyan village close to Lake Victoria, where Tasha’s family originate from. The interior of Asembo manages to strike a perfect balance of sophisticated modernity; designed by Neil from NGI, who worked with James, Tasha and also the team from dsquared design, they have created a unique brand identity. The main floor is home to a large reception area and styling stations, with a more private room for Redken colour treatments to one side. Asembo’s team of stylists, Natasha, Lisa and Diane have a legion of loyal followers in Stamford, with recently qualified Blair joining the Asembo team. Downstairs are the sound-proofed beauty rooms, which have the look and feel of an upmarket residential spa. Jamie and Becca are Asembo’s experienced beauty team and trained Espa therapists. The Espa brand is the perfect fit for Asembo; famous for its truly personalised approach to treatments, every facial begins with an in-depth skin analysis and products are based on nourishing, non-irritating, natural ingredients. If luxurious surroundings, heavenly treatments and well-trained staff are your priorities when you have some time to yourself, Asembo really does tick all of the right boxes. • Asembo is open Tuesday and Friday 9 am – 5.30 pm, Wednesday and Thursday 9 am – 7 pm, and Saturday 9am – 4 pm. Knock migraines on the head In the UK 5.85 million adults suffer with migraines and 190,000 people at any one time experience a migraine attack. A migraine is a headache involving recurrent attacks that can last up to three days and sufferers may also experience double vision, nausea and vomiting. Migraines are often thought to be caused by emotional strain, stress, hormonal imbalances, and lack of food and/or sleep or by a reaction to some foods or medications. Research has shown that acupuncture can be very beneficial in the treatment of migraines as it tends to lessen the frequency and severity of attacks. Migraines can manifest in very different ways and a fully qualified acupuncture practitioner will want to know, among other things exactly where the pain is located, what the nature of the pain is and whether the patient has any accompanying symptoms. An individual diagnosis and treatment plan is then tailored to the patient based on this information and on their general health history. Duncan Ford, acupuncturist and British Acupuncture Council member says: “As a traditional acupuncturist I recognise the same approach is not always appropriate for each individual as symptoms differ from person to person. Certain foods may be associated with headaches or patients may find that headaches occur during their menstrual cycle, emotional issues may also be an important component in the evaluation of migraine. • To contact Duncan, acupuncturist and BAcC member phone 07714 575720, or call his clinic, The Broad Street Practice on 01780 480889.

Stamford Dog Show and Family Fun Day The 9th Stamford Dog Show and Family Fun Day is being held on Sunday 15th September and this year it will be on the Recreation Ground. The show is organised by Stamford Methodist Church with huge support from sponsors Pets Korner and Stamford Veterinary Centre. Every year this event draws crowds of dogs, and their owners, for an enjoyable day out with fun for all the family, even if you don’t have a dog there is plenty to watch and take part in. In addition to the various classes for pedigree dogs there are the ever popular Novelty Classes and a variety of other attractions. These include dog-agility courses, a ‘hands-on’ reptile tent, alpacas, owls and many family and children’s entertainments as well as a variety of charity and commercial stalls. This event is supported by Stamford Living and this year winners in all classes will be presented with a professional photo of the dog complete with rosette, courtesy of Shutterbox Photography. The Best in Show will be presented with a hand drawn portrait of the winning dog, courtesy of local artist Richard Agar. As well as the judged events there will also be a display of Hearing Dogs which are trained to help those in need of a close companion with these special skills. Malamutes and Huskies will also be on parade and the Labrador Rescue Trust will be showing their happy, re-homed dogs and some in need of re-homing. There will also be a demonstration by Sniffer Dogs in service with the drugs prevention teams from local prisons. A dog behaviour specialist will also be on hand to give advice. All proceeds from the show go towards the different projects which Stamford Methodist Church supports. In addition to the £2,000 raised at the 2012 Dog Show a further £13,000 was raised by holding concerts and other fundraising events and income from ‘The Well’ café at the church. In the past year the projects supported have been the Maua Hospital in a remote part of northern Kenya, as well as Evergreen Care Trust and Teenzone – both local charities. Some funds also go towards the youth outreach projects supported by the church. In the coming year the church will continue to support Evergreen Care Trust, the Youth Outreach project and Phakamisa – a programme based in a very poor community on the outskirts of Durban, South Africa which helps many local groups with training and income-generating activities. Come along and support the 2013 Stamford Dog Show. Bring the family, bring friends, bring your dog or just come along and enjoy the sights and sounds of pets and people enjoying a day out.

Courtesy Bike Service With all bikes requiring some form of maintenance at one point or another, Rutland Cycling is now able to offer a unique service for everyone that brings their bike for repair. Much like you are offered a courtesy car when you drop your car into the garage, Rutland Cycling is offering a free courtesy bike for the duration of the work. Despite fast turnaround from their highly trained mechanics, at times there can be a short delay in sourcing parts for your bike to be repaired. No longer will you have to stand by and wait for a week without your beloved two wheeled friend. Workshop customers will have the choice of road, mountain or hybrid bikes – all current year models and, the cycling world, that already means 2014! In addition to these bikes on offer, adding to the courtesy collection will be wheels, lights and GPS systems. Free courtesy bikes are available for all bike service customers, to guarantee availability you should book in advance. The workshops are open and courtesy bikes available 7 days a week, all year round, with minimal fuss. Simply use a debit or credit card to pay £5 security deposit and the bike will be yours. The added bonus is that these courtesy bikes can be yours to purchase once you have used them, again at a discounted price. • www.rutlandcycling.com

Love It wins ‘Best Independent Greeting Card Retailer’ accolade The winners of this year’s greeting card retailing awards - affectionately known as The Retas - were revealed recently at a glittering awards event at London’s Dorchester Hotel, attended by almost 400 people. The Retas awards, launched in 2005 by Progressive Greetings Worldwide magazine, recognise excellence across the whole greeting cards retailing spectrum, from independents on the high streets, to the mini chains, national multiples, garden centres, department stores, supermarkets as well as art and framing shops. Love It, an independent with character, located in St John’s St in Stamford, beat off the competition to win the East Anglia award! All the winners in all the retail categories were arrived at as a result of huge nationwide nomination process. Earlier this year, over 2,000 Retas forms were distributed to UK greeting card publishers, who nominated the retailers that they felt to be the worthy winners in each of the categories.

Write a stunning paragraph. Get published and win £100!! WriteStars, the new Stamford and London-based writing website, is running a £100 competition to mark its recent launch. The contest - ‘New Beginnings’ - invites writers to create the most intriguing first paragraph for a book. “The story can be about anything at all,” says WriteStars founder Rachel Henry. “We’re looking for a strong hook that makes us desperate to read on and find out what happens, all in 300 words.” The top two entries will win £100 and £50 respectively, and will be published on the WriteStars website. The closing date is 31 Nov 2013 for entries from the Stamford area. See www.writestars. co.uk for details, or call 020 3078 7835. There’s an entry fee of £2.50, of which £1 will go to the literacy charity Children in Crisis. The winning entries will be published in Stamford Living Magazine. The website will also be running workshops in the near future, including several at The George Hotel in Stamford. The first one-day workshop is booked for Sunday 15 September – ‘How to Write a Novel’, presented by author Sue Moorcroft. “We plan to cover all kinds of writing,” says Rachel, “from press releases for local businesses to romantic fiction and non-fiction. We’ll post details on our website, and in the meantime anyone can register their interest by phone or email. “Stamford is known for its thriving arts community, and we hope to be a part of that community by giving people the chance to develop their writing skills and have fun - and maybe a glass of wine or two - at the same time.”

Tax-Free Childcare

Kerry Hilliard, Partner of accountancy firm Stephenson Smart, explains the new childcare scheme for working families announced by Government earlier this year Once fully up and running, the scheme will be worth up to £1,200 per child, and so will save a typical family with two children under 12 years old up to £2,400 a year. The scheme will be phased in from late 2015 and will initially apply to children under 5. Ultimately it will be open to around 2.5 million families with children under 12. To be eligible, families will have to have all parents in work, with each earning less than £150,000 a year and not already receiving support through Tax Credits or Universal Credit. They will receive 20% of their yearly childcare costs up to £6,000 per child. The new scheme will replace the existing childcare voucher programme which is currently offered by less than 5% of employers. Families who use the old scheme will be able to stay with it or switch to the new system. Large families will benefit as savings are calculated per child rather than per employee. The new scheme is also likely to be welcomed by the self-employed who cannot currently claim vouchers. Families where only one parent works will be worse off together with those only requiring small amounts of childcare. The Government is consulting on the finer details of the new scheme, including looking at how employers can continue to play a role in supporting their employees with childcare costs within the new system. • For more information and tax advice contact Stephenson Smart & Co Tel: 01733 343275 or visit www.stephensonsmart.com

Always Take Care

Always Take Care has been successfully established for over eight years and now cares for 40+ clients nationwide, with 200 trained carers (CRB/reference checked) on their books. They have recently relocated from Cottesmore to 9 High Street in Oakham. Always Take Care offers one-to-one live-in care to clients who wish to remain in their own homes, maintaining their independence and way of life for as long as possible. The Agency recognises the vast range of needs of their clients – what suits one person will not necessarily suit another. Perhaps you need short-term care rather than long term, due to circumstance, for example postoperative care. Take Care offers three levels of care, including specialist care, for individuals and couples. Each level is well described in their brochure. They produce an extremely comprehensive care plan for each client, and detailed information about the carers chosen; and all aspects of the individual case will be liaised fully before a profile of the carer is given to a client for consideration. Once a carer is in place, a 24 hour Helpline is available 365 days a year. • Please contact Heather or Bridget if you would like to learn more. Telephone or visit www.alwaystakecare.com or call into their office between 9am – 5pm MonFri for advice or a brochure. Tel: 01572 869138

Spotlight on Florence

W

here better to take in some warm Autumn sunshine than in Florence, birthplace of the Renaissance and home to Michelangelo’s ‘David’ and the works of Botticelli & Giotto. Florence has inherited a rich cultural heritage and is perfect for a short break, and even today the Florentines and their city never fail to impress. A must see is Michelangelo’s huge statue of David that occupies pride of place in The Accademia Gallery, carved from a single block of marble. And Brunelleschi’s gravity defying Duomo which dominates the Florence skyline, together with the world famous Ponte Vecchio Bridge, the oldest in Florence which over the years has housed tanners, butchers, blacksmiths, and finally the goldsmiths’ shops that still line it today. The Uffizi Gallery houses Italy’s most important collection of art, The Medici Collection, and is well worth a visit. City Tours are available from £36.00 per adult, a little touristy perhaps, but well worth the effort. Whilst in Florence sampling the local food & drink is a must, try Schiacciata, a type of Tuscan flatbread for a snack or light lunch with salami and pecorino cheese accompanied by a glass of wine from the Chianti region. Try Gilli on Piazza Della Republica, ideal for an aperitif before heading off for dinner. If you have a morning free, Oundle Travel offer a visit to the rolling hills of the Chianti region and a wine estate visit from £45.00 per person, including a light lunch. Florence is a relatively small city and most of the hotels are within

or the fourth year running, Shaw’s Day Tour Programme was selected as a finalist for the very keenly contested ‘Day Excursion Programme of the Year’ at the National Coach Awards; and their 2013 holiday brochure was also among the finalists in the ‘Holiday Brochure of the Year’ award, The latest day tours brochure has just come out. With fares starting at as little as £10 pp, they’re ideal for a first time trip if you are new to coach travel. At the other end of the spectrum, you’ll find some truly special days out, often with lunch or tea included, like a visit to Windsor Castle which includes a private viewing of Queen Mary’s Dolls House. And there’s more! Hear top quality classical music with a series of RPO concerts between October and next June, with world class performers like John Lill and John Williams and, of course, the much-loved John Rutter. Take the opportunity to visit popular events like the Clothes Show and Birmingham Tattoo, in comfort, or to see priceless masterpieces at exclusive exhibitions like ‘The Cheapside Hoard’ at the Museum of

easy walking distance of the main sights and attractions. For stunning views, choose one of the hotels located on the banks of The River Arno. For a bargain break this spring Oundle Travel recommend the Pitti Palace, a charming little 3* hotel with a unique location and delightful views from the breakfast terrace from £299.00 per adult travelling in October/November 2013 – and always ask about free night offers, as these are applicable at certain times of the year. The 4* Brunelleschi is a characterful hotel hidden away from the main street in a charming courtyard, in the heart of Renaissance Florence - it remains a firm favourite with Oundle Travel clients from £345.00 per person for a 2 night stay in November 2013. Free night offers available on specified dates. • Call Oundle Travel on 01832 273600 for more information and up to date availability and prices.

London or ‘El Dorado’ at the British Museum. London theatre trips start from just £49.50 pp (to include coach travel and a top price show ticket). New productions on sale now include From Here to Eternity and Dirty Dancing, which is back in the West End for a limited run! Recent new additions include Barry Humphries ‘Eat, Pray & Laugh’ farewell tour at the London Palladium in December and the Full Monty, which opens in the West End next year. Don’t forget to take a look, too, at Shaw’s latest Autumn 2013/Spring 2014 Holiday Brochure for a truly tempting selection of holidays and short breaks. There is a great selection of autumn colour tours including the Lake District, Scotland and, further afield, Lake Garda. There’s a choice of Christmas shopping weekends – at home and abroad – ideal perhaps for a ‘girls’ weekend? And some great new tours like the 5 star overnight stay in London, a floating hotel in the centre of Paris, an all-inclusive stay at one of Warner’s luxury hotels! The Wool Room in Stamford has some beautiful alpaca throws, blankets and comfy cushions in an array of colours and patterns to keep outdoor guests warm.

John Lewis has some great ways to warm up and light your outside space so you don’t have to retreat inside just yet. Chimineas provide a wonderful and atmospheric source of outdoor heat and need not be packed away as autumn approaches. They can also be used as an eco-friendly garden heater waste disposal for falling leaves, saving both money and coal use. Many people have taken to using their chiminea on Bonfire Night as a safer alternative to a large, uncontrollable fire. With the addition of scented Kindlecones, they are perfect for huddling around drinking mulled wine and toasting marshmallows! Central Firepits and tall gas fuelled patio heaters are also ideal ways to warm outdoor dinner guests up.

However, perhaps the most cost effective way to recreate a cosy Orangery is to simply let nature take control and grow climbing plants all around a designated entertainment/eating area to shelter your guests. You can even train the climbers to grow in an oval shape to create a “window” on to the rest of the garden, so you will be sure to want to sit and stay a while longer. STAMFORD Living SEPTEMBER 2013

A Day Out In…

Nottingham

View of The Park from Hart’s Hotel garden

Nottingham is one of my favourite cities, and takes less than an hour to get to. The shopping is brilliant, the culture is varied, there are lots of sporting venues (Trent Bridge, Notts Forest, Nottingham Panthers, National Water Sports Centre, Ice Arena) and so many good food & drink spots Words: Nicholas Rudd-Jones Pictures: Elli Dean

ART & CULTURE

Opened in 2009 to huge architectural acclaim, The Nottingham Contemporary (www.nottingham contemporary.org ) is one of the largest contemporary art centres in the UK. It has regular exhibitions and very much merits a visit. The Theatre Royal and Royal Concert Hall (www. trch.co.uk) stages shows, musicals and comedies throughout the year, and Opera North in November. The Nottingham Playhouse (www. nottinghamplayhouse.co.uk ) 2013 is a special year for the Playhouse as it marks 50 years since the ‘new’ Playhouse was opened to the public. The Capital FM Arena www.capitalfmarena.com Lots of top musical acts, including the Stereophonics in November. Lakeside Arts Centre (www.lakesidearts. org.uk ) is the University of Nottingham’s public arts centre and museum presenting an eclectic programme of music, dance, theatre, visual art and family events all year round. With two excellent cafés and craft cabinets selling original works by leading craft makers, this is a great place to visit, albeit it’s a couple of miles west of the city centre.

WHAT TO SEE AND DO

Nottingham Castle (http://www.nottinghamcity.gov.uk/ article/22175/Nottingham-Castle ) Situated on a high rock, Nottingham Castle commands spectacular views over the city. A castle was first built on this site by William the

Conqueror in 1067. Totally destroyed after the Civil War, the medieval castle was replaced by a magnificent ducal mansion in 1674. Then in 1875 it was converted into the first municipal museum and art gallery outside London, which is still its use today. Nottingham Caves (www.cityofcaves.com) Beneath the Castle there is a labyrinth of manmade caves. Courageous kids will love them, and there’s lots of interesting history to explore. Nottingham Ice Arena – the ‘home’ of Torville and Dean and the Nottingham Panthers. There are public skating sessions every day. www.national-ice-centre.com

PIT STOPS Delilahs Deli & Café, 12 Victoria St (www. delilahfinefoods.co.uk ). We loved this place in the heart of the city, combining as it does a traditional delicatessen with a tapas style food bar & relaxed café-style seating for up to 70 diners. Atlas Café, 9 Pelham St (www.atlasdeli. co.uk ), reckoned by Antonio Carluccio to be “one of the ten best delis in Britain”.

SHOPPING DISCOVERIES

Bridlesmith Gate A haven for chic boutiques and designer labels, Bridlesmith Gate is a Mecca for stylish shoppers, including the original flagship Paul Smith store (Nottingham is his home town) Hockley – students, vintage, independent. Nice area for cafés/drinks/meals Unique boutiques, chilled out cafés. Recommended shops in Hockley are Ice Nine alternative jewellery, Cow retro fashions, White Rose, Wild Clothing and Montana local independent fashions. Old Market Square is the largest public space in the UK after London’s Trafalgar Square. From here Nottingham’s shopping streets spread out in every direction. Exchange Arcade in the centre of the Market Square. Head here for women’s fashion including Warehouse, Oasis, Jaeger and Karen Millen. SUGGESTED WALKS

The Park. The Park is one of the most beautiful Victorian estates in the country. The 150 acre estate, which was once the deer park of Nottingham Castle, is full of classic Victorian mansions (Jesse Boot of Boots fame first had his home here) and retains much of its original character, including the original gas lighting network. There are some steps down alongside Hart’s Hotel at the top of Park Row. Once in The Park, head past the tennis courts to the two circuses in the centre of the gated estate, which are a picture of Victorian gentility. A walk along the Canal. You could head west all the way to the university and Wollaton Park; or potter east a few hundred yards to get a flavour of Nottingham’s industrial past. Entry via Wilford St, Carrington St or Trent St. Wollaton Park, west of the city, is Nottingham’s biggest park - it has a lot of walking paths, the Elizabethan Wollaton House (now a natural History Museum), a café and a lake. Good site for further information on Nottingham: www.experiencenottinghamshire.com

Focus on Hart’s Hotel and Restaurant Hart’s Hotel is a modern, intimate boutique hotel in the heart of Nottingham, perched on Standard Hill just north of the castle with stunning views over the city. It would be my choice every time for a business or leisure stay, perfectly situated as it is. Service is impeccable and it is incredibly quiet, you would hardly believe you are in a city. The rooms are modestly proportioned but immaculately laid out, and the garden rooms have a table and chairs in the delightful garden, perfect for a drink before dinner or a cup of coffee in the morning. All in all very good value. Hart’s Restaurant is across the way, offering modern British cooking and probably the best place to eat in Nottingham. The style of the place is classy yet informal, and we especially enjoyed the enthusiasm and accuracy Hart’s Hotel of the service. For starters we enjoyed two seafood dishes – squid with baby chorizo, chicory, avocado; and scallops with yoghurt, cucumber and mint. For mains, my partner chose grilled halloumi with spiced lentils and tempura vegetables; whilst I tried the Roast Derbyshire Lamb Rump, with potato gnocchi, courgette caponata and aubergine puree. Both delicious and beautifully presented. For dessert, we shared a delectable vanilla pannacotta, with Southwell strawberries and a sable biscuit. It’s a restaurant to linger in, great ambience and a very friendly team. The set lunch menu is fabulous value at £14.95 and would make a good break in your day between exploring the Castle, Park and Contemporary Art Gallery in the morning and shopping later in the day. Hart’s Restaurant recently added a Gourmet corner to the a la carte menu on Friday and Saturday nights. Sample menu: Whole dressed lobster with garlic butter, saffron & lemon pink fur potatoes, shaved fennel salad Hart’s starter Poached roast monkfish ‘Osso Bucco’, artichoke, tomato and green chilli risotto Cote de boeuf for two, with triple cooked chips, sautéed mushrooms, buttered spinach, Béarnaise sauce. Art

A Fresh Take at Burghley – Sept 9th-Nov 3rd The Fresh Take exhibition opens at Burghley this month (entrance as part of the house tour) and is profoundly inspiring. Nick Rudd-Jones met with some of the artists

F

resh Take is an innovative project, giving six local artists - whose diverse practices range from street art to sugar craft - the opportunity to respond to this great House and produce new contemporary and conceptual artworks to be exhibited in the State Rooms. The project has received lottery funding through the Arts Council as well as support from Creative Peterborough. It has been particularly well received by the arts community due to the unusual opportunity it offers for the artists to engage in critical dialogue during the collaborative research and development phase. Each artist spent several months studying aspects of the house and talking to experts there to give them inspiration for a piece of conceptual artwork that reflects or echoes a story or an object from the house. As we toured the house and each artist explained their work I was struck by their sheer enthusiasm for and commitment to the project – and a sense that it had stretched them creatively in ways they hadn’t envisaged. Anita Bruce has created two pieces for the exhibition: a golden wire canary referencing Dementreuil's carved bird in Burghley's Marquetry room, whose breed she discovered in her research, and the song birds that once sat in the Great Hall. Secondly, incorporating imagery from the House's painted ceilings and tapestries, Anita has created beautiful oversized silk print feathers which are boned and embellished with metallic embroidery. 'Trophy Birds' responds to the opulence and wealth on display, with an abundance of avian and hunting imagery. Jason Duckmanton explores the frailty of life in historic times, addressing these concerns with a Danse Macabre animated in an oversized zoetrope: an allegory of the universality of death and drawing reference from the portrayal of Death on the Hell Staircase and the concept of Memento Mori present in the House, such

as the cadaver portrait of Charles Cavendish (1671). Lindsey Holmes has created textile-based artwork referencing ‘The Little Bedlam Club’, the gentlemen’s drinking club founded at Burghley in the 17th century. Her works are conceptual millinery creations incorporating the animal pseudonyms taken by club members and the club activities. Kathryn Parsons, inspired by the worn tread of the House's Roman Stairs and the sugar concoctions created in Tudor times, has created two pairs of shoes, envisaged for Tannekin Cecil and Sarah Hoggins, two of the House's former residents, encapsulating their woeful tales. Stuart Payn’s 'Calligraffik Marquetry Cabinet' is inspired by Burghley's aesthetics and furnishings, a visual anthology of the incumbents' lives. Elements are remixed using graffiti hand styles merged with calligraphy to create form and decoration that at once reference historic and contemporary contexts. Sue Shields has responded to specific narratives of the house, creating two works which explore the contemporary concept of tourism. The embossed metals encased in resin featured in 'The Taste of The Incredible' respond to the Old Kitchen's copper jelly and aspic moulds, a metaphor for the suspension of time. Sue's second work 'Wanderlust' explores the relationship with travel associated with the house. Hand cut, paper ribbon maps are entwined to provide a visual history of some of Burghley's visitors over the centuries such as Capability Brown and John Clare. This wonderful exhibition works at two levels – the pieces are appealing and interesting in their own right; but they also bring Burghley House alive too, especially characters and events from the past.

Street Artist SNIK recognized for Prestigious UK Contemporary Arts Prize

F

rom over 3500 entries, one half of street art duo ‘SNIK’; Nik Ellis, Stamford resident and magazine designer (our magazine!) has been chosen to showcase in an exhibition at the Mall Galleries in Central London from Wed 25 September - Sat 12 October, for the prestigious Threadneedle Prize. Previous winners and shortlisted artists include Nina Murdoch, now represented by Marlborough Fine Art, and Rose Wylie (currently on show at Tate Britain). The Threadneedle Prize is the leading competition for excellence in figurative and representational painting and sculpture. At £30,000, it is one of the UK’s most valuable art prizes. For the first time in its history, ‘Urban art’ has been acknowledged for its contribution with the shortlisting of an artist predominantly recognized for his on-street works. Leading stencil artists, SNIK have been painting on and off the streets for the past 10 years, travelling worldwide to expand their artistic boundaries and knowledge of the trade. In 2011 they announced their inaugural solo show in London and since that time their profile has been steadily rising, with each new piece more impressive than the last. Their works are characterised by portraits of people and animals with a focus on melancholic, sometimes haunting images of women. Rendered with spray paint, these stencilled pieces can be as intricate as up to 9 different layers. • More info on SNIK www.visualdirt.co.uk or www.delamainarts.com

Stamford’s Lanes S

tamford was recently voted the best place to live in Britain by the Sunday Times, and one of the reasons was the sheer number and quality of independent traders dotted across the town. Incredibly, over 70 of these traders are based in our medieval and very characterful lanes, passages and courts. People travel from far and wide to visit these shops and services, and they are becoming known throughout the land. Who is to say they can’t become as famous and popular as Brighton’s Lanes? Nicholas Rudd-Jones set out to explore every one (16 in total!), and to help kickstart the campaign to give them the prominence they deserve as beacons of independence, creativity and charm. Tim Lee, President of the Stamford Chamber of Trade, is determined to help support the Lanes as part of the overall re-branding of the town. “Our aim,” he told me, “is to become like the Lanes in Brighton, a famous shopping destination that people choose to visit when they are looking for products with character, individuality and personal, independent service. We are looking at ways to improve signage, pavements and overall appeal (hanging baskets etc.)” Karen Brannan

Karen Brannan, owner of the Stamford Cheese Cellar, has taken on the mantle of ‘Champion of The Lanes’. She is passionate about the friendliness and goodwill of The Lanes traders. “We recommend each other,” she told me, “and work together as a team.”

G Gaynor Jewellers S

tamford’s traditional family jewellers, G Gaynor Jewellers, founded in 1990 are opening their doors the weekend commencing 27th September for a special event. Running over three days the jewellers are inviting you to come and admire the gorgeous Clogau collection. This beautiful range of Welsh Gold boasts exciting and unusual designs, with each piece containing a rare touch of the rose coloured gold. The Clogau brand was established in the early 1990’s, and each individual piece of jewellery is handcrafted to the highest quality. The Welsh gold used within Clogau was discovered in the hills of Snowdonia over 150 years ago, in the Clogau St. David mine. After many years, however, the gold veins became very rare and the gold was harder to come across. The Welsh gold is loved and appreciated worldwide, and our very own Royal family have their wedding rings crafted from their own nugget. G Gaynor Jewellers are offering an exclusive offer over the period of the three day event. If you spend £250.00 on Clogau gold then you will receive a beautiful Origins pendant, worth £109.00, for free! This family based jewellery shop has grown from strength to strength over its 23 years in Stamford, and is proud to offer fantastic, friendly and traditional customer service, along with an extensive range of jewellery and an excellent repair service. • So come along to G Gaynor Jewellers on the 27th, 28th and 29th of September, enjoy a glass of bucks fizz, admire the full range of Clogau gold, and meet the friendly team. You will also be able to benefit from the exclusive offer, discounts and have a chance to see the brand new pieces that have recently been added to the collection.

SHOPS & SE RVICE S SOUTH OF NORTH ST Nag’s Head Passage Narrow and a little bit daunting, this is the major pedestrian link between the old town and Northfields, passing through the old town wall. J & L Ball Interiors (Tel: 01780 481416, www.jandlballinteriors.co.uk) moved to this high visibility location at the top of this passage in 2007. “It’s the best of both worlds really,” Lorraine told me, “lots of pedestrians passing by and a car park right opposite too.”

is flourishing where several chains have foundered. Beyond processing, he also does portraits shots for passport photos etc, and is able to provide a framing/canvas service. “But the photo print business also remains strong,” Andy told SL, “after all, without prints where are all those happy family memories to be found?” Cuts ‘n’ More (17, Tel: 01780 243272, www.cutsnmore.co.uk ) Always cheerful, and usually only a short wait.

Mallory Lane

UTS Electrical (7, Tel: 01780 762367, www. utselectrical.co.uk) Love this place, if its anything electrical they always seem to have what you need, be it an unusual light bulb or a toaster.

Mallory Lane runs up the west side of Harrison & Dunn (Tel: 01780 762088) and is a neat cut through from the Sheepmarket to the Post office.

Sweets ‘n Treats It’s surprising who you see popping in here, young and old alike, for their fix of great value sweets and chocolates.

SOUTH OF BROAD ST

NFU Mutual (Tel: 01780 427018) is one of the friendliest insurers you will ever come across; they always seem to recall your details very quickly and are competitively priced too. Our contact there is Frankie, and she’s a gem.

Humble Pi Coffee Shop

Renaissance Health & Beauty (2, Tel: 01780 763768, www.renaissancebeauty.co.uk) is one of the original and one of the best health & beauty clinics in Stamford, offering a discreet and topclass service. Fiona celebrates 20 years running the business next year.

Wellington Lane A cut through from the top of Red Lion St to the High St. Hairess (1, Tel: 01780 765815) Sandra Jackson runs this hair & beauty salon, which she moved recently from her home. She has been pleasantly surprised by the number of ‘walk-in’ customers she now gets, and is delighted with finding a central location at an affordable rent. LunchBuns (2, Tel: 01780 764274)

Humble Pi Coffee Shop (8, 01780 757373) opened in April where Beans formerly was. It is run by a very friendly family team; headed up by Adam, his Mum Helen, his sister Sophie and brother Bradley. The coffee is good, and it remains a very pleasant hidden away spot with a good outdoor space to watch the world go by. Garie Nigel Hairwork (6, Tel: 01780 751511, www.garienigelhairwork.co.uk) Founded by Garie nearly twenty years ago now, this is undoubtedly one of Stamford’s best and most established salons. It remains progressive in its style and always a very friendly place to go.

A little bit of Lanes History Martin Smith writes:

“The Lanes were most probably created as communication routes between the principal arterial roads of the borough, as they are today. The main roads north of the river all run east-west along the valley contours. The lanes tend to all run northsouth to connect them. Some lanes adopted names from former pubs in their vicinity: e.g. Nag’s Head Passage and Roebuck Lane (now Goldsmith’s Passage). It is clear that some lanes housed trades and probably housing: Silver Lane and Goldsmith’s Lane imply that metalworking trades were concentrated there. Cheyne Lane hosts the Hole in the Wall pub and several buildings with retail use. Thus the lanes allowed for the town to expand within the confines of the borough. That north-south communication routes were needed is emphasised by Richard Newcomb’s plan to create a new street from St Mary’s Street to High Street in the 1840s, of which the first two shop buildings survive.”

for the family's chickens. The children will also have the benefit of the most unusual outdoor classroom - a yurt! They will be able to use this warm space all year round - after playing and digging in their very own mud pit!

Star Lane Star Lane is really a road, but we feel it merits inclusion for the proliferation of shops there over the last year as it has been re-developed. The Broad St Practice (Tel: 01780 480889. www.thebroadstreetpractice.co.uk) is at the top of Star Lane. Established in 1996 by husband and wife osteopaths, Perry Westbrook & Anthea Bentley and now with over 10,000 registered patients, it is a practice committed to providing excellence in complementary healthcare. They spotted the potential of this site long before Stamford became ‘fashionable’, and have been delighted by it ever since.

Harris McCormack Architects (3, Tel: 01780 767707, www.harrismccormack.co.uk) Harris McCormack Architects was founded three years ago to create a practice that thought out of the box, that was not afraid to do things differently and that looked at every project/site on its individual merits. Naturally a location in one of Stamford’s lanes was in keeping with this image, and they have been very happy here.

Silver Lane Health Foods ( 2, Tel: 01780 755710, www.silverlanefoods.co.uk) Under new ownership after the very sad passing of the previous owner, this landmark shop has retained its passion for health foods and its wide range of well-known and not so wellknown ingredients. This shop more than any epitomises the characteristics of a ‘true Lanes’ enterprise – originality, passion, independence.

Mobile World (Tel: 07424 780251)

Silver Lane is one of the town’s busiest lanes, being the main cut through from the market to the high street, and with many interesting independent business along it. Stamford Photo Express (Tel: 01780 763659, www.stamfordphotoexpress.co.uk) has recently moved to these larger premises at the top of the lane. There will also be space

The Woolroom (8, Tel: 01274 392096, www.thewoolroom.com) The Woolroom chose Stamford because of its strong historic associations with the wool trade, which brought the town its great wealth in the 14th century. St Paul’s Court (7 St Paul’s St) Although this isn’t officially its name, it seems an apt title for this charming courtyard full of independent businesses just behind Miss Pickering’s the florist. Miss Pickering (Tel: 01780 489261, www.misspickering.com) Miss Pickering is an original in every way. Her shop is a fascinating place to look around and her flower arrangements are always incredibly original, with a gorgeous array of flowers and a very natural-look. Her blogs are well worth following too, they can be found at http://www. misspickering.blogspot.co.uk/ Simone loves the location: "We all look out for one another, we are a community, we help one another, it’s brilliant.” Equilibrium Health & Beauty (Tel: 01780 757579, www.equilibriumstamford.co.uk The quiet and charming location matches the exquisite pampering that you will receive at this spa. H Works (Tel: 01780 754605, www.hworks stamford.co.uk) Alan loves their location in Stamford Walk, but is surprised how many people still seem to be discovering their place for the first time. “I would love to see something like the Leeds Arcade,” he told me, “where you have a wrought iron arch at each end of the lane, announcing it to be Stamford Walk.” The shops just south of here are due to become a clothes shop and gift shop respectively.

HairHouse (Tel: 01780 762687) The Hair House has been tucked down here ever since I can remember, and it feels like one big family who want to serve their clients brilliantly and have a fun time whilst they are doing it.

Georges Gatehouse An eclectic collection of retro furniture and accessories. You are bound to find something in here to delight.

Horseshoe Lane connects Red Lion Square to the Sheepmarket; it was re-paved in York stone a few years back, making it much more pleasant; but rather alarmingly these are starting to break up now.

So if you want to make the man in your life look that little bit classier, this could be the destination for you.

Cheyne Lane

Mr Pangs (Tel: 01780 766508) is especially recommended for its Sunday buffet which is excellent value. Cheyne Lane Bistro (Tel: 01780 480048) We have had several readers emailing in to recommend this bistro – no frills, well-cooked food, friendly service.

Chic Hair (Tel: 01780 762323) has been doing my family’s hair for many a year. Stamford Cheese Cellar (Tel: 01780 489269, www.stamfordcheese.com ) Karen Brannan has a passion for cheese and she often talks about it to groups/evening meetings and enthuses them about all things cheesy. You will feel the same way if you go down and meet her, and take away something very fine to try. The space above will soon be vacated, and there are many businesses that are already interested in moving in. “Watch this space!” says Karen. Stamford Wine Company (Tel: 01780 489269, www.thestamfordwinecompany.com) This location has brought Blake Johnston so much success that he is able to move soon to larger premises in St Paul’s St. This is one of the functions that The Lanes perform so well – ‘incubating’ start-up businesses by enabling them to get going with a low cost base due. The Smart Investor Frenzied property flipping may be a thing of the past but smart investors know bricks and mortar still add up as a sound place to put your money. Making it pay relies on working with the right properties and the right professionals. Stamford Living talks to leading property experts Richard Watson and Robert Goodwin, who have joined forces to offer specialist lettings and sales services. With the dramatic financial crash that ended the property boom, you’d be forgiven for thinking that property was no longer a wise investment. With finance still in disarray you’d be forgiven, even, for thinking that hiding your cash under a mattress, or the 3.30 at Newmarket were safer options. However, secure investment growth still exists and it can be found in the property market. Those with the means, insight and appetite have been using property as a successful part of their wealth management strategy to great effect. Richard Watson of lettings agency Watson Mitchell says: “Smart landlords are gaining enough of a return from their property investments to supplement income, support their retirement or fund their children’s education. We also act for ex-pats who still see the UK property market as the best place to protect and grow their wealth. “All our clients are using property to secure growth where other vehicles, such as bonds, shares and stocks have plateaued or failed.” This is not the unsustainable growth of the Noughties boom years, which attracted opportunists restyling themselves as property tycoons. Today’s growth is more stable, more realistic and it has longevity. It’s the type of growth that even cautious investors shouldn’t dismiss. Richard explains: “There’s a huge shortage of housing in the UK. Government is tackling the problem but it will be decades before supply catches up with demand. There’s a shortage of cheap money, low lending ability and a generation of young people who need to remain fluid to chase the job market. It all adds up to a buoyant rental market. It will remain so for some years.” As with any investment, a portfolio will only perform as well as it is set up and managed. You can gain greater control and growth of your investments as long as you understand the rental market. It comes down to choosing the right property, in the right location. It’s more difficult to achieve than it sounds. Robert Goodwin of Goodwin Estate Agency explains: “People still let their emotions drive their decision-making when it comes to investment properties. “If you want the return you can’t get from the standard investment houses, then you have to focus on how tenants choose a place to rent rather where you’d like to call home. The £300,000 cottage with roses around the door may look the most attractive to you, but to a tenant it says high maintenance, high bills and inconvenience. “Most renters are objective and want something that is easy to live in, close to amenities and affordable. In this area, this is more likely to be a £160,000 three-bedroom, modern build than a traditional, listed cottage.

48

“It’s absolutely crucial to get the property right. Experts who have spent decades following, studying and understanding the market really are best placed to advise on where to invest. “Even for our big-time investors, who come to us with anything up to £1,000,000, it makes more sense to assemble a portfolio of entry-level properties. The returns are better, the risks are lower and the money works much harder for you. Smaller properties will always be needed by recently separated people and professional young sharers.” Robert added: “The Government’s policies to tackle the housing shortage and ability to buy will inevitably take effect. However, it could be some years before the market shifts, keeping the property market steady and ripe for investment now.” It’s a gentle reminder that the property investment market has stabilised. This is not the scramble for assets we saw last decade through the availability of cheap money. The climate has become a more tempered investment route for those with the capital to buy outright. Having experienced, professional advice and support by your side, you can manage out the risk and concentrate on maximizing the growth of your capital. Sound prospects indeed.

Specialist lettings advice from Richard Watson, Watson Mitchell “Quality property managers take care of the day-to-day management in the same way that financial managers look after your stocks, shares and bonds: acting when necessary to optimise annual returns and maximize growth. Property investment tends to lose money when the residence is poorly managed. Thankfully, ARLA, the Association of Residential Letting Agents has made it easy for investors to identify good management agencies who can all but eliminate the risk and the headaches. Landlords are protected by a money guarantee scheme when they work with agencies accredited by ARLA, which is the only government recognised body regulating the industry. ARLA agents are also highly skilled and qualified in all aspects of property management. This means they can minimise financial risk by guiding you safely through lettings legislation and tenancy transitions, when the investments are most exposed. When it comes to establishing what is and isn’t your responsibility, assessing wear and tear, negotiating deposit returns and finding replacement tenants quickly, an ARLA agent is better equipped to protect you while still looking after the tenant’s needs. Correct reading and implementation of legislation and contractual agreements and robust evidence to avoid disputes make all the difference for healthy investment returns and happy tenants. Top tips for successful property investment 1) Establish your financial goals 2) Use specialists to find the right property 3) Discuss your goals with them 3) Don’t overborrow 4) Plan for the costs 5) Use a specialist management agency to secure growth

Specialist sales advice from Robert Goodwin “When buying investment property, you have to think in numbers, not in the way we usually buy houses. Our advice is built on 40 years in the industry. Use it and you’ll avoid the common mistakes others make. With rental property you need to balance long-term capital growth, gross rental income, annual running and maintenance costs and levels of finance required. Significant gross returns are unlikely if you are servicing a large buy-to-let mortgage. However, it’s not impossible to develop a healthy property portfolio with an element of financing. Undoubtedly, you’ll see the best returns if you can invest mortgage-free. House prices will remain stable until we start to see a rise in incomes. So, you need to plan for the next 10 to 20 years for significant capital growth. On an annual basis, expect gross rental yields in our region of between 4 and 5 per cent. Compared with the rest of the finance market, the return is compelling. Clearly, the lower your running costs, the better your annual yield. Factor in maintenance, management costs and void periods. The best way to minimise costs is to invest in a wellmaintained or newly-renovated property; which could provide a decade of low-maintenance income. Plan for 11 out of every 12 months being let. That way, you’re prepared for the worst and pleasantly surprised by returns when you don’t have any void periods. And remember, tenants like space and storage as much as buyers. Don’t buy a property where the third bedroom is little more than a box and there’s nowhere to store shoes, balls and bikes. It will limit rental potential. • Goodwin Property Services is one of the area’s leading specialist sales estate agencies. Call Robert Goodwin on 01780 750000. A S K L EO SPE CIAL

ALL SAINTS BREWERY

Stamford’s main trade in the early 19th century was malting and a number of breweries were established in the town. All Saints is the only one left producing beer. Jean Orpin and Sue Lee trace its history.

EARLY HISTORY

William Brown Edwards was a managing partner of Harper, Hunt and Edwards in Water Street and left the firm in 1826 to set up his own brewery. The site chosen was on the corner of All Saints’ Street and Scotgate on land granted by the Marquess of Exeter. The brewery was built with an entrance on Scotgate and with the brewer’s house next door. Edwards died in 1841 and his son ran the firm until 1857 when Frederick George Phillips took over for a couple of years. In 1859 Elmer Brown, a farmer’s son, bought it and moved the entrance from Scotgate to All Saints’ Street. Scotgate was very narrow although it was the Great North Road! He was listed as a wine and spirit merchant and brewer in the 1861 census but as a farmer in 1871 when he lived at 11 Barn Hill. By 1881 he had moved to Warwickshire.

MELBOURNS

Herbert Wells Melbourn and his brother George bought the brewery in 1869. They were farmers from Nocton in Lincolnshire. There was a fire at the brewery in 1876 and it had to be rebuilt. When it was rebuilt it was very up to date with a coal fired boiler and the most modern brewing methods. The new plant was called ‘Melbourn Brothers Steam Brewery’. Herbert ran the brewery and George continued to farm at Nocton. The partnership was dissolved in the 1920s, but after Herbert’s death in 1927, his widow continued to run the brewery with George’s children.

TIED HOUSES

Breweries needed to buy local pubs as retail outlets for their beer. Melbourns had thirty three tied houses including eleven in the town. The Crown Hotel, The Hit and Miss, The Brewery Inn (now The Jolly Brewer) and the Bull and Swan are still in existence. It is still possible to decipher the name of The Victoria on Ryhall Road and The Boat and

Railway on St Mary’s Hill. The beer was transported in barrels on a dray pulled by horses. The stables were part of the Brewery complex. It was only possible to travel about 15 miles a day so depots were opened in Grantham and Lincoln. The brewery still has records of these daily journeys.

CLOSURE OF THE BREWERY

In 1971 All Saints’ Brewery was put up for sale and bought by the Earl of Gainsborough and his son-in-law Lord Liverpool. A cracked boiler halted production and the brewery closed. The tied houses were administered from the Exton Estate until they were sold in 1987 to Camerons of Hartlepool.

REVIVAL OF THE BREWERY

Samuel Smith of Yorkshire took over the brewery in the early 1990s and opened it as a museum. The buildings were meticulously restored by Humphrey Smith, the owner of Samuel Smith. Before hops were used in beer, fresh fruits were the main additive and in 1994 Smith’s decided to brew fruit beers. The old fashioned equipment was perfect. The beers are brewed and fermented at All Saints’ Brewery in Stamford; then blended, conditioned and packaged at Samuel Smith’s Old Brewery in Tadcaster. Their strawberry beer was awarded Gold for the ‘Best in Show Organic Class’ at the United States Open Beer championship 2013.

TODAY

The fruit beers are on sale at the brewery on All Saints’ St and do take the opportunity to visit the brewery - the present landlord is an excellent guide. It is open for a tour during the Georgian Festival at the end of September and by arrangement for groups. The cost is £6.50 and booking (at the brewery) essential.

Secondary schools The move from primary to secondary school is a big step, so it’s worth attending open evenings to see what’s on offer. Alysia Anderson does her homework on schools in the Stamford catchment area Arthur Mellows Village College Tel: 01733 252235; www.arthurmellows.peterborough.sch.uk This respected academy in Glinton for 11-18 year olds gained an Outstanding rating from Ofsted and holds Specialist Status in Technology. Courses cover both the academic and vocational, with exam results scoring well above the national average. The college facilities were expanded last year to include new music, science, ICT and media rooms and a new innovation centre for engineering opened this year. Students are encouraged to participate in music, sports and performing arts alongside Duke of Edinburgh’s Awards. The open evenings are on 2 October for Year 7 and 13 November for Sixth Form. Bourne Academy Tel: 01778 422365; www.robertmanning.org.uk Formerly Robert Manning Technology College, this non-selective state secondary converted to Academy status in 2011. Numbers from the Stamford catchment area are steadily increasing, into both Year 7 and Sixth Form. The school achieves good academic results which improve year on year. Upgraded facilities since becoming an academy include 300 new computers, two new science labs, new PE changing rooms and a four-classroom Humanities block. Food Technology is a new subject now offered at A-Level thanks to the school’s state-of-the-art food chilling and packaging facilities. Sports on offer include rugby, football, netball and hockey while the school also has a thriving Creative Art Faculty. The Sixth Form open evening will take place in November. Year 7 information evenings are held in mid July. Bourne Grammar School Tel: 01778 422288; www.bourne-grammar.lincs.sch.uk Following its recent expansion, Bourne Grammar now takes highachieving pupils at the 11+ from Stamford, Bourne, the Deepings and Peterborough. As one of the top performing selective secondaries in Lincolnshire, demand for places is always high. This has been met to some

54

degree by an increased Year 7 size and a larger Sixth Form. New facilities include the Turing Centre, a computing and systems and control building, and extra classrooms. Sports, music and the arts are actively encouraged and pupils enjoy stimulating trips and after-school activities. The Sixth Form open evening is on 14 November at 7pm. For other ages, information evenings are held in late June. Casterton Business & Enterprise College Tel: 01780 762168; www. rutlandcountycollege.com Rated Outstanding by Ofsted, this co-ed community college caters for 11-16 year olds. The King’s (The Cathedral) School Tel: 01733 751541; www.kings.peterborough.sch.uk Founded by Henry VIII in 1541 to educate the choristers, this comprehensive school continues a close bond with neighbouring Peterborough Cathedral today. There are around 1,150 pupils, 340 of them in the Sixth Form, for which there is a minimum qualification requirement for entry. In 2011 a Junior Department opened for Years 3 to 6, principally to educate young choristers. Academic results here are high and the school offers a wide range of extra-curricular activities including sport, music, Duke of Edinburgh and Young Chamber. The open evening for Year 7 entry is on 18 September at 7pm and for Sixth Form on 7 November at 6.45pm. Oakham School Tel: 01572 758758; www.oakham.rutland.sch.uk An independent school for boarders and day pupils aged 10-18, Oakham blends academic achievement with wide-ranging opportunities outside the classroom. New developments include a £4 million Faculty of Science and the new ‘Learning Habits’ initiative which encourages independent, self-motivated learning. At Sixth Form the school offers AS/A2 levels or the International Baccalaureate. The latter provides a wider range of subject study, allowing students to choose the approach that best reflects their individual skills, interests and university aspirations. Various scholarships are available as well as some bursaries. Reflecting the three divisions of the school, open mornings including lunch are held from 9.30am to 1.30pm on Saturdays as follows: Sixth Form: 14 September at 9am; Lower School ‘Jerwoods’ for ages 10-12 entry: 21 September or 12 October at 10.15am; Middle School for 13+ entry: 5 October. Contact the Admissions Office to book a place.

The proposal is led by local parents who are currently seeking a suitable site for the school. To find out more or to register interest, visit the website. Stamford Queen Eleanor School Green Lane, Stamford PE9 1HE Tel: 01780 751011; www.queeneleanor.org.uk Head Wendy Hamilton welcomes children of all backgrounds and abilities to this coed comprehensive which has seen steadily improving academic results. The school’s programme of accelerated learning provides students with the option to take GCSEs a year early, with an enrichment curriculum of additional qualifications available in Year 11. Students also have the opportunity to take the English Baccalaureate. Children enjoy a wide range of after-school activities in the sporting, academic and cultural arenas. Parents with children in Years 4, 5 and 6 can see the school in action during a week of open mornings from 16 September. Stamford School and Stamford High School Tel: 01780 750310; www.ses.lincs.sch.uk The Stamford Endowed Schools have educated children in Stamford since 1532 and continue to offer excellent schooling for boys and girls aged two to 18. A ‘diamond’ structure means children go from the co-ed Junior School to

single-sex education at Stamford School (boys) on St Paul’s St and the High School (girls) on St Martin’s from ages 11-16. Then, at Sixth Form, the schools become co-ed again. Principal Stephen Roberts explained: “This allows for a highly tailored curriculum, without distraction or gender-typing during the GCSE years but with myriad mixed extra-curricular activities beyond the classroom”. Junior School pupils automatically gain a secondary place; otherwise entrance exams are held in January. A range of scholarships and means-tested bursaries are available. All three schools offer flexible boarding although the majority are day pupils. Last year, Stamford School opened a new pool and sports centre, for use by all the schools. In 2014, work will begin on a Performing Arts Centre which will be a focus for music and drama for all pupils. A schools-wide WiFi network has been put in place to allow use of technology such as iPads in the classroom. At the High School, there are plans to refurbish the Home Economics rooms and build an atrium and welcome area at the rear of the school. The Open Day for both schools is on 5 October between 10am and 2pm. A separate Sixth Form evening, for boys and girls, will be held at the High School on 16 October from 6-9pm.

Oundle School Tel: 01832 277122; www.oundleschool.org.uk Established in the 1500s, this co-ed independent school is very much part of the fabric of Oundle town. Applicants sit an entrance exam and may enter at 11+, 13+ or in the Sixth Form. Although day pupils are welcome, Oundle is one of England’s three largest boarding schools. Its impressive range of facilities and activities include rowing on the River Nene. Open days take place each quarter, with the next one on 14 September. Attendance is by arrangement only, via the Admissions Office. Stamford Free School www.stamfordfreeschool.org.uk Stamford Free School is a proposed secondary school for pupils aged 11-19 which plans to open in September 2015. With an initial 120 places for Year 7 students, the school would grow to a full capacity of 720 pupils by 2021. Free Schools are state funded by the Department for Education and are typically established in areas with strong local demand. According to the school’s proposers, 70 per cent of secondary starters in Stamford go to schools outside the town.

Nevill Arms Inn and Restaurant, Medbourne Nicholas, Helen and Abigail enjoy a working lunch al fresco

N

icholas and Helen raved about the Nevill when they reviewed previously, so I was looking forward to our lunch and what a destination – a Grade 11 listed building, rebuilt in 1863 in a Tudor style and such an idyllic setting alongside the river. You can dine outside, on the terrace, in the bar, in the restaurant or at café Nevill – a smaller bistro style affair offering Light-Bites at the back, and with its own deli. Once settled and drinks ordered, we perused the menu and Helen ordered Smoked Salmon, lemon crème fraiche with date and walnut bread (£6.95) followed by Crab Cakes, hollandaise, capers and gherkins (at £6.95 for a starter portion) – both beautifully presented and delicious but such generous servings that she couldn’t finish either! Great value for money. Nicholas had more of an appetite and ordered the Tempura King Prawns with grilled lime, garlic and chilli mayonnaise (£6.95) followed by the Whole Dressed Cromer Crab, spiced lemon mayonnaise and pomme frites (£14.95) and he had no trouble polishing off the lot – ‘superb’! I opted for Seared Scallops, Stornoway black pudding, pea puree and crispy Parma ham (£7.95) followed by another starter of Grilled goat’s cheese bruschetta with sun dried tomatoes and a pesto dressing (£5.75). Again the portions were huge and one would have done but, boy, did I enjoy them both! The Goat’s cheese was so ripe it was almost blue and the scallops were out of this world. Nicholas insisted that we had dessert so we ordered the Assiette for 2 to share (£6.95), which when it arrived looked like 3 normal portions and consisted of a chocolate brownie, chocolate bread and butter pudding and banana and chocolate ice cream in a brandy snap basket. The bread and butter pudding stole the show, for me with the Nevill’s own freshly baked brioche forming the base. Helen particularly enjoyed the ‘exquisite’ chocolate brownie. Coffee and a chat with the chef, Anthony Difazio, who had recently created the menu that we were sampling – paring it down to simplify the offerings – it still looked pretty extensive to me! Anthony also makes his own label produce for the deli and is head chef not only at the Nevill but also at The White Horse in Stoke Albany. One would never know as the attention to detail, the quality sourced produce and the excellent service make this place a very classy set up – and hard to beat. I thoroughly recommend. • Contact: 12 Waterfall Way, Medbourne, Market Harborough, LE16 8EE, Tel: 01858 565288 www.thenevillarms.net

Norfolk inspiration Sean Hope heads to the coast to source the finest lobster and also toasts an outstanding achievement… Pictures by Robin Stewart (Www.Realfoodphotography.Co)

T

he other day we were chatting in the kitchen at The Olive Branch and came up with a plan. How could we get the freshest, most keenly priced lobster on the menu? Suddenly it came to us – go straight to the source! Rather than call up the seafood salesman, why not drive to the Norfolk coast and buy from the fishermen?! So it was I found myself getting up at 4.30am to drive to East Runton village near Cromer. The dayboats start to land with their catch from around 6am, so getting there early was a must. But my family and I often spend weekends on the Norfolk coast and I love the place, so believe me, this was no chore! On arrival, accompanied by Oakham-based photographer Robin Stewart, I met up with Kevin Jonas from Jonas Seafoods. We chatted, got a feel for his fishing operation and drank in all the wonderful sights of the Norfolk coastline – the lobster pots, blue skies and sandy beaches. I also visited the crab room, where teams work 12-hour shifts preparing crabs for market. The work starts at midnight and it’s relentless but fascinating to witness. Needless to say, I collected plenty of lobster, crab and more besides, and worked out a deal with the fishermen to supply The Olive Branch with regular batches of fresh Norfolk seafood. The trip was a breath of fresh air and gave me lots of ideas to take back to the kitchen. Two special East Runton lobster dishes inspired by the Norfolk coast are now available at The Olive Branch. The dishes are: 1) Classic grilled lobster thermidor. Summer salad, saffron vinaigrette, lobster bisque, pub chips or Boston new potatoes from Abbey Parks Farm, Boston. Half: £15. Whole: £30 2) Fresh lobster claw and tail meat (no shells). Foaming basil butter, lobster tortellini made in-house with knuckle meat, chopped tarragon and scallop mousse, summer vegetables, fresh chervil from the Olive Branch’s new pub allotment. £26.50 One final thing. We are absolutely thrilled to be named UK Pub of the Year by The Good Pub Guide 2014. When we took on The Olive Branch in November 1999 our primary aim was to open a really good pub – a place that served good food, good wine and good beer in a comfortable, relaxed environment. This award shows we’ve achieved something like that. We put the award down to the incredible hard work put in by our wonderful team.

New Olive Branch allotment Not content with just cooking, I’m now gardening too. The team and I have created a vegetable patch behind the pub that’s producing a variety of herbs and vegetables such as chervil and baby carrots. The new pub allotment means we can cook with produce that’s even fresher and tastier… and nothing beats the satisfaction of knowing you’ve grown it yourself.

Hearty congratulations to The Olive Branch on winning the accolade of Pub of the Year in the Good Pub Guide

Prime cuts

Sarah Lyon visits Katie Buncome, a young entrepreneur whose Oundle-based business, Mytton, is really taking off

S

et to go to university to study medicine on a scholarship it was a work experience placement at Wimpole Hall Farm that changed the course of Katie Buncome’s life. Now 24 years old and with a BSc Honours degree in Land Management, topped up with extra study in breeding and genetics followed by a course in mechanics (useful if things break down) Katie is applying her skills to producing some of the best meat in the region. So what is it that sets Mytton Meats apart from the rest? Having researched best feed practices with an animal nutritionist Katie and her partner Adrian created a high quality mineral-enriched feed for their animals. Katie excels on price too and goes on to say, “we would rather people could afford our meat; pay a little less and pay for good quality than sell for more and sell less. We sell our ducks £4-£5 a kilo cheaper than a butcher.” The duck breasts I see on Katie’s stall are fresh, large and plump and only cost £6 for two. Katie’s ducks are in high demand and popular with customers at the Snooty Fox, Lowick, The Kings Head, Apethorpe, Oundle Mill, Hambleton Hall and the Olive

62

Branch in Clipsham. And it’s not just Katie’s duck everyone is raving about. Local chefs and customers on the farmer’s markets are just as enthusiastic about her pork. Katie and Adrian rent land and farm buildings across the region; mainly Elton, Benefield and Fotheringhay. They have plans to breed their own animals in the future but for now their pigs are bought locally and are free range. They include Large Blacks, Tamworths, and Gloucester Old Spots and British Lop Cross Tamworths. The Large Blacks are a traditional local to East Anglia and Norfolk. “A long lean bacon pig with a darker meat and a slightly nuttier gamey flavour. The Old Spots are bred by Adrian’s parents and the Tamworths are also bred locally,” says Katie. “We know they have all been bred with integrity, we rear them slowly and traditionally so they are a tender end product. If reared too quickly they will be too fatty, we would rather they be the right weight and take a little longer than the usual six months and finished correctly than rush the process.” There is a hint of nutmeg in Katie’s ‘Old English’ sausages. Perhaps this is the

reason that they are a best seller and so very popular. Her sausages may be a best seller but it is Katie’s home produced goat meat that customers, ‘just can’t get enough of,’ says Katie. “People try it abroad and return home only to find that they cannot buy it anywhere. Goat is a truly healthy meat, more tender than lamb and it contains less fat than chicken,” Katie explains. Katie is keen on cooking and offers recipes when customers purchase her produce. “I love cooking and having people around for dinner, says Katie. “It is the look on their faces when they say, ‘I really love your meat. That’s it, that’s what makes me happy and makes me want to continue doing what we are doing.” • NMeat boxes: £90 for a half pig, includes six joints, six packages of sausages and 24 chops. FOOD & DR INK

The Bombay Cottage celebrates its 20th anniversary Nicholas Rudd-Jones tries out some new dishes at an old favourite

G

o on, admit it, you’ve been a regular there for years, but surely it hasn’t been around for 20 years!? Despite being by now one of the most established restaurants in the town, the Bombay Cottage always manages to treat each and every customer as the most important and valued person that has walked through their doors. We arrived one sunny Friday evening after a stroll round town, and decided to place our choice in the hands of owner Habib. All he needed to know was how courageous we were spice-wise (not very) and which meat/vegetarian preferences and he did the choosing. The best thing from my point of view was that it meant having several dishes I had never tried before and that was great. My partner chose the Raj-Shahi Amar Jhinga – spicy king prawns cooked in mango, yoghurt and a dash of fresh cream, very indulgent and delicious. I tried something slightly spicier and more meaty – the Zaflingi Murgh – barbecued chicken marinated with hot Naga Murich, honey, fresh finger, garlic, coriander, tomatoes, green peppers and ground spices. A robust and delicious dish, all I needed was to add rice for a complete meal. The boys chose milder dishes – a chicken Shahi Naroyal – chicken korma cooked with coconut and nuts; and Chicken Merelan – chicken with mango, pistachio, almond, fresh mint, yoghurt and a dash of cream. The service here is phenomenal. Just so much as glance up, and someone will come to your table to see what you need. If you want a chat

about pretty much anything, there is someone who will pipe up and help. We found ourselves chatting for a long while about exactly how the taste buds work and transmit messages to the brain! The Bombay Cottage reputation has spread far and wide. The takeaway service is very popular too - free up to five miles, and a mileage charge thereafter, and they get some orders from surprisingly far away. The evening we were there he had just taken an order from the other side of Oakham. As we left, full and contented, we were bid goodbye like old friends. “Happy 20th anniversary Bombay Cottage and thank-you for looking after us so well and with so much enthusiasm for so many years.” • 52 Scotgate, Stamford PE9 2YQ Tel: 01780 480138 www.thebombaycottage.com

The White Horse, Baston Antonia Scott went with her husband to check out a pub east of our patch that has just been completely re-furbished

I

f you are looking for a new favourite village pub, then trot along to The White Horse in Baston (between Market Deeping and Bourne) for some seriously good nosh. The pub has been totally revamped and has a high end quality feel to the interior without losing any of the warm welcome you’d hope to expect in a pub. The bar is incredibly long so getting served is easy – part fashioned from sycamore timber at owner Mark Richardson’s farm, down the road. Mark bought the pub last year and lovingly restored it using largely local tradesmen to support the community. Managed daily by Ben and Germaine Larter, formerly of The Bull & Swan in Stamford, locals are in good hands when it comes to the quality of food served and beers and wines poured. Head Chef, Leighton O’Callaghan previously from the Five Bells in Edenham, and with a long serving military career producing high quality food, is well placed to serve his customers’ needs. Having personally visited every local meat producer and supplier before serving up each dish, customers can be assured of its premium quality. On the mid week night my husband and I visited, we noticed how busy and atmospheric

the pub was. The staff were all incredibly personable – chatty and informative without being intrusive. The food arrived quickly, for such a busy evening and was beautifully presented, as well as pitch perfect fresh. For Starters, we tried the ‘Goat’s cheese and red onion marmalade tartlet with a baby leaf salad’ which at £6.25 was plenty big enough and simply delicious and the ‘Local ale braised oxtail crispy fritters served with a pea puree’ at £8 which was devoured! We both ‘ummed and ‘arrgghed’ over what to choose for a main course, which is a sure sign that you simply have to return to sample the dishes you didn’t have. I finally opted for ‘Cumin roasted lamb chump, tomato couscous, cucumber and mint salad’ at £16.50 (the most expensive single dish on the main course menu) which was a little piece of Middle Eastern heaven! My husband was concerned about the etiquette of ordering the ‘Whole chargrilled fore rib of beef, with watercress salad, onion rings and gruyere mushrooms’ at £45 as it clearly stated ‘For Two Or More To Share’! In the end, it didn’t deter the carnivore king who was presented with the largest wooden platter filled with what looked like the perfect “last supper”!

Puddings were plentiful and I just about managed to squeeze in an ‘Eton Mess’ – a delicious twist on the classic with strawberry sorbet nestled in between the meringue and cream. We were hugely impressed with The White Horse – the surroundings, the food, the staff and the atmosphere were all impressive. Baston dwellers will surely be expanding their waist bands over the coming months! • Contact: The White Horse, Baston, 4 Church Street, Baston, Lincs, PE6 9PE Tel: 01778 560923. www.thewhitehorsebaston.co.uk

B R I N G I N G L OCA L FOOD T O LIFE

An apple a day… Enjoying a chilled glass of cider brewed in Stamford is a good way to enhance your day...

A

s we enjoy an Indian summer, a cold glass of cider is just the ticket. Happily, Stamford has its own cider – Jollydale – which is pressed and fermented just off West Street, not far from the Jolly Brewer. The man behind Jollydale is Simon Dale, who is also a horseshoe manufacturer (he is the proprietor of Pegasus Horseshoes, also based in Stamford) and the owner of Westside Health Club. Quite a combination! Simon has been making cider since 2002, when he started to pulp and press apples grown in his orchard at home in Woodnewton, Northamptonshire. These pictures show what I found when I visited Jollydale not so long ago…

1

Apples, grown in Shropshire and the Fens, are put through the pulping machine in Stamford. The tipping device was designed and built by Simon Dale.

2

Jollydale men Chris Sanders (left) and Keith Long are both from Stamford. They also work in Simon’s horseshoe factory, which is located just a few yards from the apple pressing area.

About the writer Matt Wright founded and runs Greatfoodmag.co.uk and Greatfoodclub.co.uk, two Leicestershirebased websites that celebrate and promote local food and drink. His Great Food Club Handbook 2013/14 is out now.

3

After being pulped, the flesh is layered onto cloth between wooden panels. The panels are then squeezed by the crushing machine, which extracts the juice.

Join Matt’s food club – Great Food Club – free of charge and discover the very best local food and drink. Members can enjoy special offers at over 80 handpicked independent pubs, restaurants, producers and farm shops www.greatfooodclub.co.uk/join

4

The apple juice is siphoned off into fermentation vats where it is left to ferment for around six months before eventually being blended into Jollydale cider. Waste apple flesh is compacted and fed to animals.

5

Simon’s Stamford horseshoe factory is next door to his cider-making plant.

Today you can buy bottles of Jollydale at a variety of places, including The Jolly Brewer, Stamford Garden Centre, Mama Liz’s and Peterborough-based online shop The Ale Room.

Make your own! Inspired by my visit to Jollydale and by a cidermaking course I attended at the School of Artisan Food in Welbeck, last winter I pressed my own apple juice. I used apples grown on an allotment in Waterfurlong, Stamford. The juice has now fermented into cider that I’m currently enjoying. For my full step-by-step guide to making your own cider at home, visit www.greatfoodmag.co.uk and type “how to make your own artisan cider” into the search box located at the top right of the home page.

D IA RY DAT E S This month’s highlight…Stamford Georgian Festival Friday 27, Saturday 28 and Sunday 29 September – The festival is the first of its kind in Stamford and a packed programme of events has been carefully selected to celebrate the beautiful town and entertain all age groups. Launching the weekend on Friday evening will be Dan Cruickshank, author and BBC presenter specialising in Georgian architecture and speaking at the Arts Centre Theatre, plus a delicious offering of information - and food - from Annie Gray, one of England’s most eminent food historians. St Martin’s Church will ring to music from the Coronation services of the first four King Georges, sung by the Burghley Voices. Saturday is town centre action day, with a street fayre and craft market, horse drawn carriage rides, a treasure hunt round Stamford, street entertainers from stilt walkers and mime artists to character entertainers, living statues and fairground rides. Adding particular colour will be the Coldstream Guards Military and Living History Society with a re-enactment of the second Battalion Coldtream Guards from the Waterloo Campaign in 1815. Later in the day Stamford’s notorious Bull Run takes to the streets again, this time a costume re-enactment by students from New College. Tours, speakers, Regency prose, and a production of Pride and Prejudice in its 200th anniversary all feature, including a special Horrible Histories ‘Gorgeous Georgians’ afternoon production in the Corn Exchange Theatre, repeated on Sunday. Stamford Town Council will be exhibiting precious memorabilia in the Town Hall. There will be special events at Burghley House including a talk by curator Jon Culverhouse and the historic doors of Browne’s Hospital and All Saints Brewery all opening for events. Council Chief Executive Beverly Agass remarked “As you look round Stamford you cannot fail to be impressed by the beauty of the buildings and that is what gave us the idea of a Georgian Festival against such a great backdrop. Our aim is to transport visitors to the elegance of the Georgian era with a weekend of nostalgia, discovery, participation and fun.” Mayor of Stamford Councillor Brian Charles Sumner praised the programme, saying “It’s full of imagination and colour and it is entirely fitting that local people have been involved alongside professional performers with the prospect of a great boost for local trade. What I am equally excited about is the wonderful opportunity for Stamfordians to let their hair down and really have some fun!” More information and tickets Tel: 01780 763203 or www.stamfordgeorgianfestival.co.uk

GAR DE NING

Adam Frost

L

ocal gardening talent, Adam Frost has an impressive cv, having worked with many of the garden design greats, including our dearly loved, Geoff Hamilton at Barnsdale Gardens. Adam also recently stepped into the limelight of BBC’s The One Show with Christine Walkden, to mentor a competition winner at Hampton Court Flower Show. Adam then won an incredible fifth Gold Medal at this year’s Centenary RHS Chelsea Flower Show, with his Homebase sponsored garden entitled, “Sowing the Seeds of Change”, which featured inter-planting of flowers and vegetables, fruit trees, alpine strawberries, a bee hive and dipping ponds to encourage wildlife. Local Living readers will now be able to benefit from Adam’s horticultural expertise every month.

ADAM SAYS: “What I love more than anything about my work is the way it allows me to bring together my passion for plants with my love of design, to create special places for people to enjoy. Gardening is something I believe grounds us all by getting your hands in the soil and giving you an awareness of the future and understanding of the seasons. I love the rhythm that a garden gives, it’s a job that carries on throughout the year but doesn’t have to be a chore. We live in a world where we never have enough time, but you will be surprised by how much you can achieve in your garden if you just allow yourself 10-20 minutes now and then. I hope to help people enjoy their gardens and encourage all ages and abilities to get their hands dirty and their fingers green!” SEPTEMBER: For me, September is normally a month that I just don’t want to end. Although you can feel the days drawing in, it generally tends to be good weather wise, so there’s still lots of fun to be had outdoors and a time to start your spring planting. Having coaxed your plants through the summer heat, it’s time to get ready for the start of the next season. Plants, Ponds and Lawn Care: It’s a great time to do a little planting if you have a few gaps in your borders and there are some lovely plants this month to choose from. Grasses are looking great, I especially love the ‘Stipias’ and also perennials like ‘Rudbeckia’ and ‘Sedum’ but for me, the ‘Asters’ are my stars as they can carry on until November - and if I have to choose one, it would be ‘Aster x Frikartii Monch.’ September is a particularly good time to plant as the heat of a good summer will remain in the soil for some time, which, with the addition of moisture, is great for roots to get away before the onset of winter. Also, because the days are shorter and cooler, it gives you a less stressed plant. Now is the time to plant spring bulbs - get daffodils in by mid-September, along with ‘Fritillaries,’ ‘Crocuses’ and Grape Hyacinths.’ Tulip bulbs are best left until November. Keep your bulbs in a cool, dry place – the mice love them! The tail end of the month is a good time to dig and divide your perennials to sort out your borders. I’m looking at my ‘Iris Sibirica’ which needs to be divided this year. When you are dividing it’s a good time to have a look at the plant out of the ground. Make sure you keep the stronger and younger part of the plant. Remember when you re-plant you can put in

some organic matter or a little fertiliser and cut back foliage at the same time. It’s also a lot nicer now, to clean out your pond and get your blanket weed divided from your plants. When the children have gone back to school, it’s an ideal time to give your lawn a face lift with a good scarifying and top dressing with a little seed and top soil mix. You can also give your hedges a final trim before winter sets in. Vegetable and Fruit Gardens: It’s probably the busiest month for harvesting your vegetable garden - reaping the rewards of all your hard work: French beans, runner beans, peas, cucumbers and courgettes are probably coming to an end, however, there are new crops to harvest such as pumpkins, squash, marrows and delicious sweetcorn. Start to think about planting onion sets as they’ll be ready almost a month before those planted in spring. I also like sowing rocket now as sometimes it can be even better as it does not ‘bolt’ and if you’re lucky, you can even get it through the winter. Now is also the time to enjoy the last of the summer fruits – apples, pears, plums, damsons and blackberries are all perfect for pies and jams. Now is the time to plant new strawberry runners for cropping next year. If you choose varieties that fruit at different times of the year (early, mid and late season), you can get strawberries all summer long. Wildlife: All these plants are great for the insects that are finding it harder to survive in the wild. Migrant birds such as swallows and house martins will begin flying south for the winter, so try and keep bird feeders and birdbaths topped up to encourage more birds to visit your garden as autumn sets in. STA M FOR D PE OPLE

Louis Grimoldby, a rugby talent in the making Victoria Bullimore met up with Old Stamfordian Louis Grimoldby in the Cosy Club over Mocha, and very quickly realised that he’s a man on a mission

A

ged just 19, Louis is well on the way to a career as a professional rugby player, and clearly he is meeting the challenging physical demands that all this entails. Since his recent signing with the Harlequins, a two-year contract, Louis has been training every day from nine till five. He rarely drinks and never eats anything that isn’t going to do him some good. “When you’re training hard you realise the impact what you put in your body has on you,” he says. To those of us who like the odd pizza or plate of chips with our Pinot Grigio, this sounds tough. “You have to suit the lifestyle,” he agrees, “you’ve got to commit to it. Nutrition, sleep, exercise, it’s all looked after for you at Harlequins.” Louis attended Stamford Endowed Schools from kindergarten to sixth form and by the time he was 15 he was already playing fly-half for the Stamford School first team. Out of school he joined Stamford Town Rugby Club aged 5 and played with them until he was 16, coached by his father Nick, himself a former pro rugby league player. Louis’ big break came in November 2011 when he played in St Jo’s Festival, a tournament for the best British school teams, where he was scouted by an England selector to play for the England Under 18s Clubs and Schools. There followed a three month trial at Harlequins resulting in a year’s contract with the club, but aware that the working life of a rugby player is more finite than your average career (“I’ll get 15 years from now if I’m lucky,” he says), Louis decided to carry on with his education and went to Kingston University in London to study Business Management. Studying full time and keeping up the training with Harlequins means he has little free time. “I literally drive in for a lecture, get back in my car and go straight back to the training ground. It works quite well but it takes its toll.” This of course, makes Louis a bit different from your regular student. One of triplets, he keeps in touch with his brother and sister who are also at University, and when he hears of all the fun they’re having it makes him aware of the sacrifices he’s making to fulfil his dream. Harlequins have done everything they can it seems to keep him happy though. He can’t speak highly enough of the welcome he got as a new recruit who was slightly in awe of his surroundings and the big name players alongside him. “The respect I got from everyone there took me back. It’s part of what Harlequins stand for, the big emphasis is on the culture we’ve created, on and off the field.” Now that he’s signed a full-time contract, Louis has moved to Surbiton from where he can both easily reach the training ground and continue his studies long distance. He will finish his degree with a distance learning course from Northumbria University in conjunction with the Rugby Players Association, meaning that he has precious little free time. So what is your short-term ambition? I ask him. “To push on at Harlequins and start every game, week in week out, playing in front of 15 to 20 thousand people. That’s my dream. At the moment I’m just focusing and taking it step by step.” And long-term? “To play for England.” I suspected he would say that but I confess it gives me goose bumps to hear it. “Any player in my position would say that. It’s the highest accolade.” The very best of British luck to you, Louis, your hometown is rooting for you.

Do you like Marmite? Yes. Where were you born? In Sutton-in-Ashfield. As triplets and early babies we needed the special care they had there. What are you reading? “A Life Too Short: The Tragedy of Robert Enke” by Ronald Reng. Tea or coffee? Neither. I like cold diet coke. Bath or shower? Shower. It’s too much of an effort to wait for a bath to fill up. (He seriously has too much energy!) Do you support a football team? Yes, Liverpool, because I was a fan of Michael Owen when I was little. What’s your favourite song? “Thrift Shop” by Macklemore. But I love Paul Weller, “Days of Speed” is my favourite album, it’s all acoustic and just really chilled. Who is your hero? Jonny Wilkinson, because of the way he handles his fame and his life. Maybe there’s a new JW on the way from Stamford. Watch this space!
