That was a pretty good summer It took a while to get going, but what a wonderful summer it’s been weather-wise. I hope that you had a chance to get away somewhere wonderful, to unwind and freshen up your mind; but that you also had a chance to enjoy this wonderful town and countryside of ours, which just keeps getting better. Oh, and we’ve had the thrill of the Olympics; something for everyone in terms of interest, and so much interest, not least the man who won a medal in shooting and had to hasten back home to finish off the harvest in Somerset. Here’s to a great start to the early autumn, and the pleasure of the Burghley Horse Trials.

HE Delcor furniture showroom is always a delight to visit; its location, on the banks of the River Welland overlooking the Town Bridge; the quality and range of furniture and accessories available; but above all the warmth of customer service, where you always feel you are with a friendly advisor, not a sales person. Recently Delcor has introduced many new styles and finishes, and I strongly recommend you pop in to take another look around. All the furniture is British-made and all of it can be made to your exact individual requirements; not just the fabric, but also the dimensions, so you get just the fit you want for your particular space. This is a family business that takes huge pride in what it creates. Here are some recent introductions, there are many others in the showroom too; rest assured you will find a style to suit your tastes, be they modern or more traditional: • Delcor, 30 Bath Row, Rear of St Mary’s Hill, Stamford, PE9 2QX. Predominately an online business, The Brownie Company can also be found at local farmers’ markets.
variety of trees and plants found in the British countryside and remote locations around the world. “You have to try them to understand that all honey tastes different. The flavour is all to do with the flowers. Bees only fly in a five mile radius from the hive, so each honey is uniquely regional.” A must on my shopping list is Ogilvy’s recently launched new ‘super honey’ - the Australian Jarrah honey has a range of health benefits proven to have great anti-bacterial qualities, as well as anti-oxidant levels two to three times higher than betterknown Manuka honey. Visit the Ogilvy’s stand and try the wonderful range of honeys for yourself, they are delicious!

FOOD & DRINK GRASMERE FARM
www.grasmere-farm.co.uk Contact Stuart on 01778 342344 Situated at the top of the Food Walk, Grasmere has had a stand at Burghley Horse Trials for nearly 18 years. A local Butchers, who specialise in all things pork related, they are known for their event catering in the local area. Serving their usual delicious bacon, sausages, burgers, eggs and pulled Pork in a bun, they are also able to accommodate those who are gluten free. With accompaniments such as Heinz ketchup, mayo, BBQ sauce, and apple sauce and stuffing with the pulled pork, this is a meal for anytime of the day. Clive Parker, from Grasmere, who will be on the stand again this year says “Burghley Horse Trials are busy days for us with over 3,000 Jumbo Lincolnshire sausages being sold over the 4 days in 2015!”
DICKINSON & MORRIS
www.porkpie.co.uk 01664 482068 Based in Melton Mowbray, this is another of our local companies who deserve a long service award, having been on The Food Walk at Burghley for nearly 20 years. Dickinson & Morris carry the label of England’s Oldest Pie Shop (established in 1886) and are believed to be the only remaining Pie Bakery in the world. For Burghley they offer delicious British roasted ham sliced off the bone, the best Melton Mowbray Pork Pies you’ll ever eat, a superb selection of bread delivered daily, Stilton and Red Leicester cheeses, chutneys and pickles. They are well known amongst the regular competitors and camping fraternity, who stock up here for their early morning fry ups and their picnics. They offer a great selection of packaged sausages and bacon to buy.
THE WHISKY MOUSE
www.whiskymouse.com 01536 711661 Mackenzie Baird, of The Whisky Mouse, sounds like the sort of man who should be selling whisky. This will be his twelfth or thirteenth year at Burghley he reckons, he has lost count now as he’s been so many times! This is mainly an online business but he does appear at one or two events a year and he says, “Burghley has to be my favourite”. Online he stocks 650 single malt whiskies and brings 150 -250 to the Food Walk. If you have a favourite that’s not on the stand, he is able to pop home and restock every night, so you can expect to find it the next day. Try shot taster samples of multiples. For the whisky lover The Whisky Mouse offers something completely original and unique to Burghley Horse Trials; Mackenzie brings a cask of whisky which he bottles on site, each bottle being numbered and marked with the date it was distilled.
MARQUESS OF EXETER WITH LAUNDE LAMB www.marquessexeter.co.uk 01572 822477 Local Head Chef and Proprietor, Brian Baker, of the acclaimed pub/ restaurant The Marquess of Exeter in Lyddington, will be back under the Oak tree at the top of the food walk this year serving his ‘Burghley Feast’. Brian starts the day offering top class breakfast fayre such as Eggs Benedict; and then teams up with Launde Lamb to create incredibly delicious, locally reared, Lamb Wraps - this is somewhere I make a beeline for at some stage over the four days. Over the weekend, awardwinning Launde Lamb will be providing an incredible 200 legs of lamb – which equates to an enormous amount of lamb wraps!
FEN FARM VENISON
01529 421272 www.fenfarmvenison.co.uk Jane Wesley and her husband established their Red Deer herd in 1994 and like nothing better than sitting on their patio, gin and tonic in hand, watching their deer calves charging around. No stranger to Burghley Horse Trials, having had a stand on the food walk since 2013, Fen Farm Venison is well known amongst regulars as the place to get a sumptuous breakfast bap filled with their home cured bacon and wild boar sausage. Also on offer, venison burgers and venison steaks with onions, cheese and salad, as well as delicious wild boar sausage sandwiches. Venison and Wild Boar offer a healthy alternative to a beef burger or pork sausage, being low in fat and cholesterol and I couldn’t recommend them more highly.
PIPERS CRISPS
www.piperscrisps.com 01652 686960 Best snack brand 2015-2016. Winners of 23 Great Taste Award Golds since 2007. Set up in 2004 by three farmers who hand delivered the first 20 boxes they produced, these days Pipers Crisps has flourished and now makes 24 million bags of crisps a year from their factory in Brigg, North Lincolnshire. Pipers will be bringing two vans, overflowing with more than 2,000 bags of crisps to the Burghley Food Walk this year. With 8 mouth-watering flavours such as Kirby Malham Chorizio, Anglesey Sea Salt and, my personal favourite, Wissington Tomato, there is a variety to suit all tastes. Add them to your picnic basket or just devour alongside a sneaky glass of wine or Pimms.
LYMN BANK FARM
01754 880312 www.lymnbankfarmcheesecompany.co.uk www.postacheese.com This will be the eighth year that Lymn Bank Farm have brought their wonderful range of cheeses and homemade chutneys to Burghley. Expect to find a fantastic selection of 18 different cheeses and 4 homemade chutneys on their stand. This year they are supporting a special cause and through the sale of their Just Jane cheese and Aviator chutney they are raising funds to help fund repairs to a WW11 Lancaster Bomber named Just Jane. The plane is currently based at the East Kirkby Aviation Centre, undergoing restoration works to make it airworthy again. Their Aviator chutney is based on a 1945 recipe. Head to their stand to support this great cause and buy some of their other delicious handcrafted cheeses such as Lincolnshire Brie, Skegness Blue and assorted flavoured Lymn Bank barrels. J & L Ball Interiors goes from strength to strength J
& L BALL Interiors have just completely re-furbished their showroom, and they are clearly going from strength to strength as a business. “Exciting news,” Lorraine told me, “We are a Luxaflex gallery dealer, the only one in an area stretching at least fifty miles or so, and we have invested in creating a showroom which really shows off their style and technology to the maximum.” Luxaflex is one of the top blind companies in the world, always at the forefront of new technology – they are introducing Powerview for instance, which will allow you to control your blinds remotely wherever you are. And they have all sorts of nifty innovations, for example blinds which come down from the top as well as the bottom so that you can adjust just for sun, sightlines etc. Ingenious. Pop in and take a look, they are bound to have a solution to your window covering needs. Also in the showroom you will find a large choice of wallpaper and curtain fabrics and the Little Greene range of paints. With more than a decade of experience in soft furnishings, Lorraine, Jeremy, Laura, Alan and Robin – know what works and what doesn’t. They are experienced at shutters, blinds, curtains, awnings, conservatory shades and wall coverings • J & L Ball, 16 North St, Stamford PE9 1EH Tel: 01780 481416 http://jlball.co.uk/
The Reflexology Studio W
HEN conventional medicine failed to tackle Laura Donaldson’s stress and insomnia she decided to visit a clinical reflexologist. When her well-being and sleep patterns were restored she was so impressed that she decided to retrain as a therapist herself and has now opened The Reflexology Studio in Stamford. “Reflexology has been helping people achieve better health for thousands of years,” explained Laura.” Both the Egyptians and Chinese recognised the benefits of applying pressure on reflex points found on the hands and feet, and the effect it had on corresponding parts of the body.” Reflexology is now practiced globally as a holistic or complementary therapy that treats and relaxes the person as a whole or can help specific conditions, such as migraines or back pain. Laura’s commitment has seen her achieve the highest possible qualification, a Level 5 Centralia Reflexology Mastership, developed to give practitioners a deeper, clinical understanding of the body. Her tutor at Jubilee College, Nottingham, was the first reflexologist to be made a member of the Royal Society of Medicine, illustrating the therapy’s prominence as a complementary treatment. At her purpose-built studio Laura thoroughly investigates client’s medical history, lifestyle and diet before starting treatment with general relaxation techniques. “It is a therapy that is non-intrusive and is always tailored to meet a person’s distinct needs. I will examine your feet and discuss any issues before using precise thumb and finger techniques to re-balance your body and treat the condition you are suffering from.” Laura specialises in infertility and lymphoedema (the fluid retention often suffered after cancer treatments), but her reflexology skills can also help with: stress and anxiety; sleep disorders; arthritis; sports injuries; pregnancy and labour, digestive disorders; depression; hormone imbalances; chronic conditions such as Multiple Sclerosis, and much more. Sandra Allen of Stamford asked Laura to treat her for pain associated with Repetitive Strain Injury. “Over a number of sessions with Laura I began to see a significant improvement in the RSI related pains in my right shoulder, with the intensity and duration of pain decreasing. “I have also found the treatments relaxing and beneficial in relieving the stresses and strains of everyday life. I will be recommending Laura to friends and family.” • Tinwell Road Lane, Stamford. By appointment only. 07584 901 949 Laura@TheReflexologyStudio.co.uk www.TheReflexologyStudio.co.uk

UPDATES Perfectly Fitted Every Time Buying the first bra for any teenage girl is often daunting and can be an embarrassing experience, which is often accompanied by bewilderment and lack of guidance, especially on the High Street. Sally Stillingfleet has been talking to Zoe, owner of POZE and found that things have changed for the better. The formative forays into bra wearing can be made fun and unintimidating, Zoe assured me. But along with the pretty styles on offer at POZE there are general pitfalls to avoid, so it was interesting for me to be guided by her upbeat tour of the teen ranges.
G
IRL’S breasts develop and mature roughly around the age of ten or eleven or later in some cases. Peer pressure tends to catapult girls into buying unsuitable bras without being measured, in a bid to appear ‘grown up’ at this age; however Zoe explained “a non- padded lightweight bra or bralet will give enough light support at this stage. A padded bra provides additional support and will protect their modesty.” Research suggests that underwired bras shouldn’t be worn until the breast has fully developed as wires may restrict and damage the breast tissue. Zoe is happy to measure and advise in private fitting rooms at any time. Unlike an encounter my friend had in a larger well-known store, where the lady could see me traipsing in and out with various styles, only to be told as she flicked her tape measure at us “Well if you had asked I would have measured her!”
• Allow for future growth so always fit on the tightest hook, but remember to check or get re-measured regularly as you grow and let the bra out. This applies to all women - get measured regularly especially during and after pregnancy, when weight loss has occurred and around the menopause. • A well fitted bra is important for a woman’s posture, if not fitted correctly it can cause backache, muscle tension and headaches. • It can also act as a real confidence boost and make clothes hang far better – always begin with the undergarments!
The underband is firm, but not uncomfortable
The breasts are totaly encased within the wire, which should sit flat against the body.
Wires should sit close to the chest and the bra should stay in place when the arms are lifted.
Spotlight on Gran Canaria Now the evenings are drawing in and the weather is cooler why not consider a break to the Canary Islands during the autumn months?
G
RAN Canaria is alive with varied natural beauty from the stunning sand dunes of Maspolomas to the volcanic mountainous interior. To explore you do not have to stick to the roads, a well signposted network of tracks and trails will lead you to nature reserves on foot or bicycle. With more than 20 locations with excellent conditions for surfing, windsurfing and kite surfing, Gran Canaria is without a doubt a perfect destination for the watersports enthusiast. If golf is your game you will not be disappointed, with ten magnificent courses, whether you are beginner or budding master. The cuisine in Gran Canaria is excellent and the local wine well worth a try! The busiest parts of the island are best avoided, head for Maspolomas, San Augustin and Mogan in the South.

Zoe’s Teen Tips
• Wearing the right bra keeps a girl’s breasts supported, whilst they play sport and can prevent injury to breast tissue. Therefore, as your bust grows it is important to invest in a sports bra. Educating the young girls what to look for in a wellfitted bra will last a lifetime. If the underband is riding up, the back size is too big.
If the wires dig in at the underarm, a larger cup size is needed.
If the wires lift under the band when arms are raised, a smaller band is required.

HEALTH & BEAUTY
Focus on Glen Eden Medical Glen Eden Medical Aesthetics is part of The Market Cross Surgery, a modern GP surgery situated between Stamford and Grantham, which offers aesthetic services. Genevieve Potter finds out more
D
OCTOR John Elder has been a member of the British College of Aesthetic Medicine for over a decade and his wife Mary is a member of the British Association for Cosmetic Nurses. Also a practicing G.P., Doctor Elder explains his ethos: “We offer the best aesthetic treatments in a professional, medical environment and our patients know that they are in exceptionally safe and experienced hands. “We offer a spectrum of aesthetic solutions ranging from the relatively simple – such as muscle relaxing injections – to ever-more advanced, like the Silhouette Soft™ non-surgical thread facial lift, which offers more dramatic results.”
26
In speaking with Doctor Elder, it’s clear that he’s a man who is excited by what he does and the transformational results that can be achieved. “Whether we are treating a patient who has suffered with rosacea on their face for years with IPL (intensive pulsed light), or carrying out an “8 point” non surgical facelift where we can precisely remodel the middle of the face in a very exact and subtle way, we offer the highest standards of care and precision.” Keeping up with aesthetic
advances is a top priority and the centre has just taken delivery of a ‘Q-switch Nd-Yag’ Laser™, for tattoo removal. Doctor Elder comments: “No laser in the world today will completely remove multi-coloured tattoos, particularly yellow ink, but our new machine is safe and highly effective in removing black ink – we are seeing some brilliant results.” I asked Doctor Elder about the current trend for lip fillers and his response typifies his responsible approach to aesthetics: “It’s very easy to over-fill lips, but we would never do so, that’s just not what we are about. We want our patients to achieve a subtle, beautiful result.” Doctor Elder welcomes the fact that the aesthetics industry is being pushed in to better, more stringent regulation and higher educational standards, led by the Department of Health. He comments: “Aesthetic treatments can provide a major confidence boost – we see it every day. However, they are not without risk and patients have a right to be fully informed and to demand the best. “Every patient is unique and we insist on a thorough consultation and initial assessment for every treatment that we carry out.” • Glen-Eden Medical The Market Cross Surgery Corby Glen NG33 4BB Tel: 01476 550056 E: DrJohnElder@Glen-Edenmedical.co.uk www.Glen-Edenmedical.co.uk

Hair SOS Hair that’s been stressed by sun exposure and air conditioning needs some serious TLC Genevieve Potter investigates the best solutions
Nano-Intense Keratin revolution® at Mojo
A blissful Indian head massage and blow dry Here’s a brilliant idea if you want to be rid of tension, and love the look of perfectly blowdried hair. Lynsey Saker of Be-Well Massage, and the talented team at The Loft Hair Boutique offer an Indian head massage and blow dry package. For £40 (a saving of £15), you can experience the joy of massage to the upper back, shoulders, upper arms, neck, face and scalp, whilst seated in an upright position. One client recently commented: “I felt completely relaxed and invigorated, the massage not only relaxed my muscles but it also felt spiritual and really connected me to my mind, body and spirit.” Lynsey uses organic balm during the Indian Head Massage, to nourish the hair and scalp – the perfect precursor to a fabulous blow dry. Claire and her team of stylists use paraben-free Montibel-lo hair products to impart moisture and shine, before creating a perfect tailor-made blow dry. • Be-Well Massage The Loft Hair Boutique Tel: 01780 757781/ 07861 732792 10A St Paul’s Street, Stamford PE9 2BE
A keratin ‘shot’ at Oliver Lee If you’re short on time but need a noticeable boost to your hair’s shine and smoothness, a keratin shot treatment at Oliver Lee comes highly recommended. I recently visited Jacob for this treatment, which, as a bonus, incorporated a truly glorious head massage. The keratin shot (officially known as the Paul Mitchell KeraTriplex 2-step repair treatment®) strengthens brittle hair and can reduce further breakage by 80%. It contains proteins that are virtually identical to the keratin found in human hair. It lived up to the hype – leaving my slightly “fuzzy” tresses exceptionally smooth and shiny for days afterwards. • Oliver Lee Hairdressing, 11 St John’s Street, Stamford PE9 2DB www.oliverleestamford.co.uk Tel: 01780 754828
If your hair is prone to frizz, it’s worth considering a professional treatment that lasts much longer than your next shampoo. The Nano-Intense programme at Mojo offers three options depending on the thickness and length of your hair, from an “express” process, that lasts up to 30 days, to the “intense” version, which makes thick, unruly hair smooth and straight for up to three months. Corrina at Mojo recently carried out the “volume reduction” process on my hair and, having just come back from a few days in the sun with hair that felt dry and unruly, I was excited to see if it fulfilled its promise. My hair was shampooed twice with a reparative shampoo to remove any trace of styling products, before being roughly blow-dried. The keratin treatment was applied with a small brush and combed through, until my hair was saturated. It contains a combination of glycolic acid and carbosysteine, loosening the natural bonds in hair that are then penetrated by the keratin complex, effectively filling up the spaces to make hair smoother and straighter. After sitting under a heat lamp for 20 minutes, most of the treatment was rinsed out, then, with just a little of the treatment remaining, my hair was blow dried again until it was almost dry. Finally, my hair was flat-ironed with a straightener to seal in the keratin, leaving a swishy, glossy, smooth finish. The verdict? My hair has never looked so sleek and well behaved! And after the first couple of washes I liked the effect even more, as more of my hair’s natural kink reappeared, minus the frizz. Unlike the early versions of keratin treatments, with Nano-Intense, you can wash your hair straight after the treatment. Nano-Intense Keratin revolution with Corrina at Mojo starts from £85 for the express treatment, including after-care shampoo and conditioner. • Mojo, 1A Ironmonger Street, Stamford PE9 1PL Tel: 01780 757070 www.mojohairandbeauty.co.uk

ARCIA May has recently opened its second Stamford store at one of the premises formerly occupied by Lambs in St Mary’s St, No. 36. Samantha Drewery and her team have worked incredibly hard to create a stunning space – in harmony with the Georgian origins of the buildings but with a simple, modern elegance that makes shopping there a delight Women’s and men’s shoes have been transferred to the new site, and children’s shoes will remain at no. 41. All of the pottery is oven/Aga/microwave/dishwasher and freezer proof and is designed and made for everyday use. The patterns including flowers, spots, stars and hearts look best when all mixed together and will look stunning in both traditional and modern homes. Country Traditionals buy their pottery from the world famous Ceramika Artystyczna pottery works in Poland. The quality is second to none; this why they have so many loyal customers that keep adding to their pottery year on year. You may have seen Country Traditionals at various country fairs and events including Burghley Horse Trials, Badminton, Hampton Court Flower Show and the Country Living Magazine shows. SHOPPING
STAMFORD’S CHARITY SHOPS Molly Clayton (words) and Charlotte Starbuck Peters (pictures) are both studying ‘A’ levels at New College, Stamford.
W
HO doesn’t love a good bargain? If you’re from Stamford or a regular visitor then you will know the wide range of charity shops that feature in our high-street, ranging from Cancer Research, a popular bustling charity shop which re-stock regularly, to Mind which displays and sells designer brands but without three zeros on the price tag. They don’t just sell your usual unwanted clothes; they sell the popular branded fashion favourites liked by all people of Stamford. Cancer Research Charity shops have their good days and bad days. One day you can pick up 10 items and another, leave empty handed. The majority of charity shops in Stamford re-stock every day and only keep their stock out for up to two weeks. I went to go and visit the well known Cancer Research located at the top of the high-street opposite Wilkinson’s. Shirley Vide, the assistant manager told me: “Our store sells a variety of good quality women’s, men’s, children’s and designer clothing. We re-stock every day and only leave things on the rails for two weeks so you are always bound to find something new every time you come in.” Shirley explained that she had noticed that the tourists of Stamford are now attracted to the area because of the charity shops. She said; “The bus routes for summer now include Stamford on their timetable which allows people of all ages to come and explore our fashionable, trendy charity shops.” When the ‘trend’ to rummage in charity shops came about I turned my nose up at the idea. Old clothes, unwanted items, missing buttons, not my kind of idea of ‘fashion’; but when I was dragged in to them whilst my mum
36
36.indd 1
pottered about down Stamford high-street popping in to each one, I started to find some things that I liked. Jackets, books, t-shirts and even designer items with the tags still on! I began to realise that most of the items in these shops were good quality and that all they needed was a wash, if you’re as fussy as me that is. I mean what teenage girl wouldn’t enjoy being able to get a whole new outfit with just £20? I began to enjoy this ‘hobby’ a lot and it got to the point where I searched around the streets of Paris, pulling my Dad along with me in the depth of the city just to try and find a vintage, retro charity shop. May I include that he had never stepped foot in a charity shop and didn’t intend to. He mistrusted the idea of that typical stereotype of ‘someone died in this top’. However, a year later, he now can’t walk down a street, whether it is in Stamford or Wimbledon, without wandering into one to pick up a bargain and bring it home. And don’t even get me started on my Granddad’s charity shop cufflink collection which consists of five full boxes! Age UK Tracy, who is the deputy manager of Age UK, positioned opposite Dominos told me that she is getting a lot of customers who are young and looking for that ‘retro’ look. She explained: “I never put things on sale which are ruined, unsellable or have any missing buttons. Our shop has the best drop-off point in Stamford which means that our stock is always being replaced and updated.” The shop has a designer rail which displays men and women’s clothing and each time I have been in, it has been full with a crowd trying to grab whatever bargains they can get. The shop has a changing room where you can try on items and if you need any advice then the staff are there to help!
Charity shopping has increased in popularity not only in Stamford but around the UK. They are becoming a magnet for people who want current, contemporary, cheap clothing, who don’t mind it being second hand. In America it has become popular enough to earn its own slang term of ‘thrifting’. May I just add that I have asked my Mum if I can go to America just to experience this ‘thrift shopping’. She said no… There are now over 9,000 charity shops in the UK and Ireland, 700 of which are Oxfam and 800 Cancer Research; and the numbers are continuing to grow. Mind I visited Mind which is stationed next to the Card Factory. Mind is known to be one of the designer clothing hubs, selling brand new, original clothing that is updated frequently. The shop has rails of modern, unique clothing that is suited to the season. It also sells bought-in goods which consist of brand new watches, sunglasses and jewellery which is all sold at favourable prices. “There is no longer a stigma attached to shopping in charity shops,” said Vicky, a volunteer who works in Mind. “Many young teenagers come in here to buy clothing. Its brand new, labels are still on, its affordable and some of its designer. Who wouldn’t want that?” Vicky explained that the stock is renewed every two weeks and new stock is bought in every day. “Bags are always waiting for me outside the shop most days when I arrive”, she said. The ‘charity shop’ trend is continuing to grow all over. It’s attracting people to our bustling, bright town allowing it to grow in popularity and expand its fame. I would advise anyone to go and have a peek inside them; you’d be surprised at what you can find. After all, they are what make Stamford, Stamford.

OUT & ABOUT
STAMFORD DOG SHOW The Stamford Dog Show and Family Fun Day is here again on Sunday 11th September on Stamford Meadows
I
t is run under the banner of Stamford Methodist Church with huge help from the Stamford Veterinary Centre and Pets Korner. As usual there will be both Pedigree and Novelty Classes with an entry fee of £2 per dog per class. The first four places in each class receive rosettes and the first three prizes. There are also displays by Malamutes and Huskies, and Empingham Agility; and this year there will also be a display by the Military Working Dog Regiment based in North Luffenham. Throughout the day there will be a wide variety of stalls selling all sorts of goodies both for dogs and their owners. Children can be entertained on the fair rides, the land train or at the children’s activity tent and there will also be plenty of food stalls for your lunch and other refreshments. The alpacas will be there again this year as will the ever popular reptile tent with many unusual creatures on display and some to handle if you dare ! The show is a fundraising event for the charities supported by Stamford Methodist Church which this year includes the Nixon Memorial Hospital in remote eastern Sierra Leone. Although still struggling with a huge programme of rehabilitation and rebuilding after the widespread destruction during the Sierra Leone civil war which only ended in 2002, most of the country was further devastated by the recent Ebola outbreak. The hospital lost members of the nursing staff as well as many members of the local community during this period.
In 2010 we supplied solar panels to generate electricity for the hospital and also funds for nurses training. In response to the Ebola outbreak we have recently provided funds for further training in an Infection, Prevention and Control Workshop to boost the recovery programme. The new water well and pump on the hospital site funded through the UK based charity ‘Friends of Nixon’ has recently been completed and is now fully operational improving the water supply at the hospital for patients, staff and students. Stamford Methodist Church continues to cover the cost of vital medicines. The conditions at the hospital are very basic and further funds will help them become fully functional again providing support for all members of the local community. So much more needs to be done. We shall also be supporting the Stamford and District Carers Sitter Service which provides a home sitting service for the people who are housebound and depend on the 24 hour care from relatives or friends. They work closely with other caring organisations to assist the carers and their families across Stamford, Bourne and Market Deeping as well as villages in Rutland and East Northants. Another project supported this year is the youth outreach work. Luke Denley provides support at Casterton College and the Stamford Welland Academy and is a member of the Chaplaincy Team at New College Stamford. Luke is also a member of the Street Pastor Team that goes out in Stamford on a Saturday
evening and he is responsible for the Legacy Youth Club which meets every Wednesday for young people of secondary school age. Each year an animal charity is also supported and this year it is Pets As Therapy who provide therapeutic animal visits to care homes, hospitals and hospices. Volunteers bring in their friendly, temperament tested, vaccinated dogs and cats and visit over 6 million people a year, sharing the joy which pets bring. Research shows that stroking, playing with, feeding and looking after animals is good for the health and can reduce stress and blood pressure levels. One care director said: “It is all about creating homes from homes. Pets are very therapeutic and particularly to elderly people”. There are also specific autism services for children that can provide a trained assistance dog to help parents with children aged between 3 and 10 years of age. This will provide support for families to gain the most from a relationship between a pet dog and their child. The day starts with an open-air Church service at 10.30am complete with brass band. Registration for the Pedigree and Novelty classes starts at 11am. To avoid the rush you can pre-register at either Pets Korner in Stamford Walk or at Stamford Veterinary Centre, Great Casterton. Judging starts at 1.00pm. • Don’t miss one of Stamford’s most popular events - a great day out for all the family. For further information call Tony at Pets Korner on 01780 756082 STAMFORD LIVING SEPTEMBER 2016

Moores Estate Agents launch specialist Country Rentals service. The increasing demand for rural rental properties in this region has prompted one of the most prominent estate agents in Stamford and Rutland to launch a new arm of its business.
M
oores Estate Agents is now operating Country Rentals to deal with the rising number of requests for cottages and village homes to rent. New director Paula Smith, who has 15 years’ experience of managing rental properties, will oversee the new venture. She will be office-based and will use the skills of sales staff and valuers at Moores’ six offices, in Stamford, Oakham, Uppingham, Melton Mowbray, Grantham and Peterborough (due to open Autumn 2016). Managing director Vernon Moore said: “Having once had a general lettings agency, which grew to such a size that it was difficult to give the quality of service Moores like to offer, on being approached to sell the portfolio we decided that was the best way forward. We are now able to offer a more bespoke service to people with country/village homes which being more individual i.e. cottages through to farmhouses and properties with land, requires a more specialist knowledgeable service.” “We do a lot of work with people relocating from London,” he said. “Quite often they don’t want to jump in feet first and buy somewhere here so they look for a nice place to rent instead. Over the last year or so we have been helping buyers moving to the area rent character and country properties whilst they have been searching for something to buy. We have found that these people will often pay a premium for the right thing that other letting agents sometimes overlook” “We know from experience that the best service comes from having a dedicated senior manager heading up the business and this is the role Paula will fill with our rental properties. “We are delighted to have her on board and she will be meeting with owners and bespoking the new service.” Vernon said the rental market was buoyant in this area with no shortage of landlords wanting to put tenants into properties, including thatched cottages, farmsteads and manor houses. “We are dealing with properties ranging from £700 through to £5,000 a calendar month for country homes.” • For more information about property services offered by Moores Estate Agents go online at www.mooresestateagents.com , PAULA SMITH email office@mooresestateagents.com or telephone 01572 757979.

Moores Estate Agents sponsor British Touring Car ace Mark Howard Moores Estate Agents are excited about going trackside to cheer on the local motor racing driver who the company is now sponsoring.
T
he business, which has six offices in the area including those at Stamford and Oakham, is supporting Mark Howard, who is taking part in the high profile MSA British Touring Car Championship. They are looking forward to watching Mark compete when he takes to the grid at Rockingham, near Corby, over the late August Bank Holiday. Moores are inviting staff and clients to a hospitality experience where they will get a chance to meet Mark and see his car and the race up close, for the prize winners they will be able to go on to the grid pre-race as well as other VIP perks. Managing director Vernon Moore said: “I used to race cars myself, on the rally circuit, so I have an interest in motor racing. “We thought it would be a good opportunity to support Mark and get our branding on his car. “The race is shown on ITV with a television audience for this in the UK of more than 20 million people and the races are shown live so we will get some good exposure.” Mark, who lives in Little Dalby, which lies between Oakham and Melton Mowbray is a new home builder and Moores work closely with his company Grange Developments in both acquiring sites and house sales. Mark races in a Volkswagen Passat CC. He is also a former Renault 5 ELF Turbo UK Cup champion. The touring car event, which dates back to 1958, features high-powered saloon cars and only Formula One and the American NASCAR stock car series have longer histories. The front grid “works” teams spend over a million pounds a year, so privateers need all the support they can get to compete. Another local driver in the past who did well is Frank Sytner who is also a client of Moores and became sponsored by BMW, he then went on to win for many years. Vernon said “We have a pair of VIP hospitality tickets to give away for the event at each of our offices. Anyone who has a valuation during the month of August will be entered into a prize draw and have a chance of winning the tickets. So call your local Moores office to book your appointment.” • Melton 01664 491610 • Oakham 01572 757979 • Stamford 01780 484555 • Uppingham 01572 821935 • Grantham 01476 855618 • Country & Equestrian 01780 433000

INTERIORS
Winning Design QKS Home Improvements have been announced as Atlas’s May winner of the ‘Installation of the Month’ competition with a gorgeous orangery
L
ONG established Stamford firm, QKS Home Improvements Ltd, are specialists in all types of orangery and garden room installations having traded since 1981 and with an excellent reputation. They have undertaken many projects which include bespoke hardwood, UPVC, and aluminium garden rooms.
A recent project QKS’s clients were looking to replace their old conservatory with a bespoke orangery. Their existing conservatory was in need of repair to a point where they could no longer use it for most months of the year.
44
The clients approached QKS to design and build an orangery that could be used all year around, becoming a focal point for their entertaining. Switching from a conservatory to a contemporary orangery using aluminium products was essential to creating a luxurious living space. The orangery measures 9m x 5m and features a dual colour lantern roof; white inside grey outside. QKS used two roof lanterns which were strategically positioned to maximise the natural light into the property. QKS carried out the complete design to build programme, which included all the hard landscaping and garden design as well as
the interior décor. The clients are absolutely delighted with their completed project, and can now relax or entertain in their large, open, contemporary new living space. Nick Clipston, owner of QKS Ltd, commented, “Our customers loved the slimline appearance – especially the slim bars. The result is a new living space full of light and style that is really transformative whilst still totally in harmony with the original house.” • QKS Home Improvements Limited. Charles & Dean ...changing the face of finance E
STABLISHED since October 2012, when co-founders, Tom Perkins and Simon Grace, founded the company using their middle names, Charles & Dean, to launch the business. During that time, the Stamford based independent finance brokerage has helped over 6000 customers financing vehicles, assets and commercial property. The business has grown dramatically, tripling in size in the last 12 months. Selecting their team for their finance expertise and dedication to the customer journey, feedback consistently touches on the friendly, efficient and bespoke service. Renowned for helping consumers find the most competitive and suitable finance as well as assisting businesses in their growth and development, Charles & Dean are truly committed to making the confusing world of finance a more simple and straightforward process. Recognised recently by being awarded Small Business of the Year and Customer Care at the Stamford Mercury Business awards, 2016 has been quite a year for the groundbreaking business.
Here the team discuss what they enjoy about the finance industry: Tom Perkins - Director and Co-Founder: Being able to help businesses grow and develop by helping them leverage their money gives me great satisfaction. Simon Grace - Director and Co-Founder: Ensuring we are deliver financial transparency is imperative...gone are the days when brokers bamboozle the customer with industry jargon.
Brad O’Hara - Senior Broker: Every day brings exciting new challenges - no one client’s needs are the same - finding the right proposition for each client, that works specifically well for their individual business needs. James Murray - Business Development Manager: It’s extremely satisfying knowing that you’ve made the difference in saving someone a significant amount of money on their finance package.
Victoria Magnall - Office Manager: I love speaking with our customers on the day they collect their childhood ‘poster car’...being part of making someone’s dream come true is a terrific feeling.
Dan Thorpe - Head of Vehicle Sourcing: There is nothing like sourcing a vehicle which you desire for Charles & Dean to then complement the purchase with a favourable finance agreement/package.
Charlotte Purdy - Office Assistant: You are always learning in the ever evolving financial market. It is a fast paced, dynamic environment and I enjoy the challenges it brings as we believe nothing is seen as a problem.

Rutland Homeowners’ Brexit vote affects local property market T
HIS month, our local buy-to-let expert and property investment advisor, David Crooke, author of the ‘Rutland and Stamford Property News’, online blog www. rutlandandstamfordpropertyblog. co.uk and managing director of UPP Property Agents analyses the age demographics of Rutland homeowners and the impact of their Brexit decision on the local property market. The residents of the Rutland County Council area voted as follows... Rutland County Council ‘Remain’ Votes 11,353 (49.4% of the vote) Rutland County Council ‘Leave’ Votes 11,613 (50.6% of the vote) Rutland County Council Turnout: 78.1% There is some evidence to indicate younger voters were vastly more likely to vote ‘Remain’ than their parents and grandparents and, whilst the polling industry’s techniques may have been widely criticised (following them wrongly predicting both the 2010 General Election and the Brexit results), anecdotally, many surveys seem to suggest there was a relationship between age and likelihood to support leaving the EU. Interestingly, the average age of a Rutland resident is 42.4 years old, which is above the national average of 39.3, which might go someway to back up the way Rutland residents voted. Putting aside whether you were a ‘remain’ or ‘leave’ voter, the vote to leave has, and will, create uncertainty and the last thing the British property market needs is uncertainty (because as with previous episodes of uncertainty in the UK economy – UK house prices have tended to go down).
46
Interestingly, looking at the homeownership rates in the Rutland County Council area, of the 10,716 properties that are owned in the Rutland County Council area (owned meaning owned outright, owned with a mortgage or shared ownership), the age range paints a noteworthy picture. Age 16 to 34 homeowners 538 or 5.0% (Nationally 9.6%) Age 35 to 49 homeowners 2,636 or 24.6% (Nationally 29.2%) Age 50 to 64 homeowners 3,605 or 33.6% (Nationally 30.7%) Aged 65+ homeowners 3,937 or 36.7% (Nationally 30.5%) Incredibly, 94.9% of Rutland homeowners are over 35 year old! So, with the high proportion of older homeowners, one assumption is that all the Rutland County Council area homeowners would vote ‘remain’ to keep house prices stable and younger people would vote ‘out’ so house prices come down and they could afford to buy. But, there’s a risk in oversimplifying this. The sample of the polling firms are in the thousands, whilst the country voted in its millions. Other demographic influences have been at play in the way people voted, as early evidence is starting to suggest that class, level of education, the levels of immigration and ethnic diversity had an influence on the way the various parts of the UK voted. Don’t assume everyone over the age of 50 voted ‘Leave’ and don’t assume most 20 somethings backed ‘Remain’ - because many didn’t! • For advice on buying, selling, renting and managing your homes and investments in Rutland and Stamford, please call UPP Property Agents on: 01572 725 825 or email: david@upp-property.co.uk

This month Deborah Pennell stops off around Stamford to meet people who take their dogs to work
W
Oliver with Angus and Jacob with Ena at Oliver Lee Salon
HEN I began this article I sent a Facebook message to friends asking if anyone knew of people in Stamford who took their animals to work. I was inundated with messages and it appears that dogs are very much part of the working set in Stamford. Sadly, no one knew of anyone who took a parrot or bearded dragon to work so that’s another article for the future!
With a great reputation as one of the top hair salons in town, Oliver and the stylists at Oliver Lee take it in turns to bring their dogs to work. On any one day you may meet Angus, a 15 week old French Bull dog, Ena an 8 year old Chihauhau, or Axle a 2 year old miniature Poodle. www.oliverleestamford.co.uk
Amber at H-Works with Alan & Heather Mowat
Jasper with Leisa and Tim of Bluebird Care Jasper, a 5 year old Russian Black Terrier goes to work at Bluebird Care in Wharf Road, Stamford. Run by his owners Tim Carey and Leisa Mackenzie, this award-winning business specialises in live in and domiciliary care in the Rutland, Peterborough and East Northants area. www.bluebirdcare
The Team at Stamford Veterinary Centre with their dogs A Vets is an obvious place to find dogs at work and on any day a selection of the staff’s dogs can be found curled up behind reception at Stamford Veterinary Centre.

Dollylicious aka Dolly with Peter Glassey
Alan Mowat says, “our Golden Retriever, Amber, is now two and has been coming with us to the shop every day since she was eight weeks old. You’ll normally find her curled up asleep in her own armchair or she’ll greet you by bringing you a toy!” H-Works is an interior design and soft furnishings business established in 2009, specialising in bespoke curtains and blinds, fine fabrics and custom made upholstery as well as providing lighting, paint, wallpaper and decorative objects for the home. www.hworksdesign. co.uk
As Head of Forestry, Park and Gardens on Burghley Estate, Peter Glassey and Dolly, his working cocker spaniel, spend lots of time out and about on the Estate dealing with day to day problems, checking on future projects and welcoming school parties. Peter says “Dolly’s favourite walk is anywhere there are rabbits, and her favourite trick is to go into contractor vans and eat their sandwiches!”
Guinness with Sarah Mayhew at Burghley Estate Office Guinness, a 4 year old Chocolate cocker spaniel belongs to Assistant Land Agent at Burghley Estate Sarah Mayhew. Sarah says, “Every office needs a dog. A dog is cathartic and offers calm in a busy and stressful environment”. People who come into the Estate Office often come to see Guinness. His favourite treat is deer antlers (luckily not attached to the live animal!) and he loves a good old bunny chase. www.burghleyestate.co.uk

Murphy and Perdita (Purdy) with Robert & Robina Loomes at Robert Loomes 12 year old Lurcher, Murphy and 2 year old Saluki, Perdita are both rescue dogs from Three Counties Dog Rescue. Murphy was found abandoned on the edge of a motorway in Northern Ireland with a broken leg and was too thin and weak to operate. These days he enjoys lounging around on the sofa whereas Purdy loves horses and jumping on hedges and they both spend some time in the office at Robert Loomes watchmakers. Robert says “Murphy and Perdita really enjoy coming to work with us, we have a drawer which is specifically full of dog treats and they always sit quite close to that especially when Robina is in the office, as they know they can persuade her that they are starving!” www.robertloomes.com
Lottie with Caroline Naylor at Welland Tyres 5 year old, Lottie, a miniature Jack Russell greets customers of Welland Tyres in Gas Street by rolling onto her back to have her tummy tickled. Welland Tyres is a well reputed Stamford business that sells and fits car tyres, exhausts and batteries. Owner Lottie has great fun sitting at the front of the garage woofing at all the dogs that go past. www.wellandtyres-stamford.co.uk
Valentine at Miss Pickering Herbie and Candy at Hunters Interiors Popular, Uffington based Interior Design company, Hunters Interiors regularly have two four legged friends at the office. Herbie is a working cocker spaniel and is owned by Candy and Hercules, a longhaired miniature dachshund who belongs to Rachel. The Hunters pooches are well known to regular clients and the delivery men are so fond of them, they often bring them treats. www.huntersinteriorsofstamford.co.uk
Bailey owned by Tracy Burr at The Flower House Bailey a 5 month old cockerpoo, loves going to work at this busy florist in the heart of town and is proving popular with all their clients. He waits under the cutting table for his favourite chew, which happens to be a carnation stem. www.theflowerhousestamford.co.uk
Anyone who frequents Stamford’s popular florist, Miss Pickering, will have met handsome Valentine the whippet. He can also be spotted, hanging out in the St Paul’s Street shop window, as part of the wonderfully eclectic window displays. According to Miss Pickering he likes tripe sticks, pizzas in The Tobie Norris and chasing cats! www.misspickering.com
George, Maisie and Jazz all go to work at the National Association of Agricultural Contractors (NAAC). NAAC is a national trade association representing the interests of land-based contractors. Memberships vary from large businesses with lots of big farm machinery, through to sheep shearers, and NAAC gets involved in political lobbying on their behalf, providing information. It also promotes agricultural contractors through the press and various media. George is a 16 month old bulldog belonging to Louise Cox (NAAC Membership Manager). Louise says “it’s like living with a petulant toddler. George can give you a high five for a treat and loves to eat bugs and spiders. He is good as gold in the office, snoring loudly most of the day, unless Maisie is in, then playtime is required”. Maisie, a 4 year old cairn terrier belongs to Jennifer Donn (NAAC Executive Officer), is cute as a button, slightly (no very) bonkers but also behaves impeccably when we need to get on and work At 15 years old, Jazz, a cocker spaniel, belonging to Jill Hewitt (NAAC Technical Consultant) will often take refuge in the car just outside the office for a good long kip and to get some peace and quiet, away from the young whipper snappers. www.naac.co.uk

any of the craggy rocks of Charnwood Forest are of volcanic origin and are very old, dating back through 600 million years. It was the site of the first ever recorded discovery of Charnia masoni, the earliest known large, complex fossilised species on record. It was discovered in 1957 by a local schoolboy named Roger Mason (thus masoni) who, with friends, was exploring a quarry near Woodhouse Eaves. The rocks of Charnwood Forest remain the only place in Western Europe where these Precambrian fossils have been found. David Attenborough, whose father was principal at the university, spent his childhood here collecting fossils.

Leave Swithland Woods North car park by the permissive footpath at the west end. When you come to a clearing in the woods take the footpath heading south. Keep bearing right along the tracks through the woods, aiming for the bottom right-hand (SW) corner. Cross the road and follow the footpath opposite uphill towards Bradgate Park. Go through the gate into Bradgate Park, then head straight uphill, skirting the right side of the copse of trees. Continue over the open countryside, ascending the first of the three peaks to the Old John Tower. Descend the hill from Old John towards the exit gate to the Hunts Hill Car Park, travelling in a north-westerly direction. Pass through the gate and car park to reach the main road. Cross the road at the car park entrance and walk down the road immediately opposite. You will find a stile marking the Leicestershire Round long-distance footpath about 150m down the road on the right-hand side. Cross the stile and head downhill. The path crosses another stile at the bottom and then crosses the golf course to a road. Cross the road and the footpath continues immediately opposite. The well-marked path crosses several more fairways of the golf course before you reach a stile into a field on the left. Cross the stile into the field, crossing diagonally to a second stile. Crossing this takes you across a second field, which exits onto a farm track. Follow the track round a sharp left-hand corner to reach the road at the top. Turn right down the road for about 200 metres before turning left onto the permissive track across Broombriggs Farm Country Park.

Follow the waymarked path along the field, keeping the hedge to your lefthand side, until you reach a stile on the left. Cross the stile and head uphill, keeping the woods and wall to your right. Continue until you reach a gate and stile on the right. Cross the stile and head for the top righthand corner of the field. Go through the gate into the next field, then continue to the top of the hill, keeping the wall to your left. You have reached the top of Broombriggs Hill - the second peak! Carry on downhill with the wall on your left until you reach a gate out of the field, then follow the path downhill. When you reach the farm road at the bottom, turn left for a short distance and then cross the main road into Beacon Hill Country Park. Follow the path to your left and climb to the summit of Beacon Hill, marked by the triangulation point. You have reached the third peak! Take the path downhill from the triangulation point, heading east. This soon joins the main track down to the lower car park (and toilets). Just as you reach the car

park there is a track off to the right. Follow this track until you reach a fork to the left that heads down towards the road. Descend the bridleway to the road and cross into the entrance to Windmill Hill. Follow the footpath to the left of the car park, heading uphill in a south-easterly direction. Pass through two gates and enter the woods. The main path goes straight through and down the hill into Woodhouse Eaves, becoming a road at the start of the houses. (A short, optional, diversion uphill to the left will take you to the remains of the old windmill at the top of Windmill Hill, before rejoining the path to the bottom). At the bottom of Windmill Hill (Mill Drive) turn left down the road into Woodhouse Eaves village centre. Turn right at the crossroads. At the T-junction at the bottom of Brands Hill, turn right. Pass a cottage on the right before reaching a road junction with a grassy triangle at its centre. Take the right fork and you will shortly be back at the start.

Creating the perfect kitchen The kitchen is often considered to be the very heart of the home. Of all rooms, this is the one we use most and, as a result, it evolves to reflect our lives and personalities.
W
ITH over 25 years’ experience, the craftsmen at the Fitted Furniture Company are experts at creating bespoke, handmade kitchens that are not only beautiful and functional, but also encompass the vision and lifestyle of their clients. “These days the kitchen is not just somewhere to prepare food away from the rest of the family,” says Jason Nicholls, owner. “It is somewhere to entertain, for us to indulge our culinary passions, or the natural place for the family to congregate. We work with our clients from concept to installation to ensure their kitchen complements those experiences.”
An Exton village kitchen We spoke to a client based in Exton who had recently had a Fitted Furniture Company kitchen installed to understand how the process worked. “The kitchen was part of an overall renovation of our 17th century village house,” the client told us “and the main contractor for the whole house project was Adrian Smith of Clipsham, who did an excellent job. “Our overall plan for the kitchen involved moving it from where it was, in a small room facing north, to a much larger south-facing space. This created the right start point. “We then worked with the Fitted Furniture Company to create the optimal design, using several of our ideas but also taking on board the many bits of practical advice that Jason gave,
56
for example about the right size for the island given the need to be able to circulate easily around it. “The kitchen that the Fitted Furniture created was totally bespoke and of the highest quality. We selected our own kitchen equipment – we were particularly interested in sourcing a particular cooker – and you are welcome to do that or they can be supplied for you – we appreciated that flexibility. And we appreciated the attention to detail, for example the coat rack in the utility room which had to fit into a limited space without looking squashed. “The service and installation were all excellent. We have enjoyed it for several months now and we are yet to see a single snag! And without exception, friends and family have been amazed by it and agree it has really brought the house to life. We would heartily recommend the Fitted Furniture company to anyone that wants the best.”

24hour football match to support #TeamGeorge F A
T the end of July, One Touch Football took on a 24hour football match that would see the ball moving on the pitch for 24hours straight through from noon on Saturday to noon the next day. On the Saturday they invited local clubs and team to participate in tournament style matches; in this time George Robertson was able to meet young players. Then into the night local groups and teams and groups played for hour slots from 9pm until 3am Sunday. Then from 3 am until 9am saw One Touch Football dads and coaches played in an hour long game until Eddie (George’s younger brother) made up an 11 to play against a Peterborough Utd fans team. Glenn Vaughan (head coach) played for 15hours straight of football and, with Emma and Scott, were at the event for 24hours helping with BBQ, inflatables and other events throughout the time. They have broken the £2,500 mark and are still collecting in some donations. They would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who helped supported the event.

Robert Loomes appointment
S
TAMFORD Watchmaker Robert Loomes has recently been appointed Vice Chairman of The British Horological Institute. Under the Chair of Stella Haward of Norwich, herself a working clockmaker, the role of Vice Chair stands in for the Chair, typically for public speaking and events. Robert Loomes is well-known internationally for his work on watch making and was recently made only the second emeritus Fellow of the Institute this century. He says “I am delighted to have been appointed to the role. This is a very exciting time for the BHI. With help from the Heritage Lottery Fund we are beginning an £8.5 million development scheme called Saving Time. Our current teaching centre, Upton Hall near Newark has a splendid dilapidated stable block. Saving Time will convert this into two extraordinary teaching classrooms, doubling the number of teaching hours we can provide to clock and watch making apprentices, which gives the industry a very positive outlook for the future”.

ROM April 2016 a Personal Savings Allowance has been available to basic and higher rate taxpayers. The amount available depends on the individual’s circumstances with basic rate taxpayers receiving a £1,000 tax free allowance and higher rate taxpayers receiving a £500 allowance. Those who pay additional rate income tax (at 45%) will not have an allowance at all and will continue to pay tax on their savings income. Savings income includes interest received on bank and building society accounts, unit trusts, open-ended investment companies and bonds – not just savings accounts. Interest received on an ISA account will not apply towards the allowance total. Banks and building societies will no longer deduct tax at source from interest at 20% and will pay savings interest gross. This means that non-taxpayers will no longer need to fill out a form to receive bank and building society interest gross. From April 2015 a £5,000 starting rate (0%) band has also applied to savings income and this continues into the 2016-17 tax year. The effect of the £11,000 personal allowance, the £5,000 starting rate band and the £1,000 new savings allowance makes it possible for some to receive up to £17,000 savings income tax-free in 2016-17. HMRC will normally collect the tax for those that exceed the allowance by changing their PAYE tax code and those who complete a selfassessment tax return will continue to do so as usual. • For more information contact Stephenson Smart Tel: 01733 343275 or visit www.stephensonsmart.com

OUTDOORS
Stamford’s perfect places for fresh air and fun Kate Cadman takes a town tour of indigenous outdoor idylls
W
HEN anyone mentions ‘Stamford’ the image that immediately springs to mind is a maze of higgledy, piggeldy quaint cobbled streets and lanes lined with a multitude of unique, undersized, historic stone buildings shoehorned tightly into meandering rows. However, like a painter often focuses on the spaces in between the objects they are endeavouring to capture, one must not overlook the truly magical open spaces of our market town which serve to subtly knit together pockets of user groups with common goals. Stamford has its fair share of green public land which provides the backdrop for many activities. From the traditional, family oriented games, to shared hobbies and skill sets, there’s always an outdoor space within minutes of the town centre that you can visit to ponder the meaning of life or indulge in one particularly popular, pet-lover’s pastime - perambulating with a pooch! One local mum who regularly embraces one such open space which nestles neatly alongside the town’s meandering River Welland is Brigitte from South Luffenham. “I like to drop my two-year-old daughter, Anouk, off at the local nursery in town, buy a large take-out coffee and walk onto the Meadows with our dog, Neo. What I really love is that I can do the town thing (grabbing some caffeine!) and then walk just a short way and feel that I am properly surrounded by nature.” “I get the best of both worlds here, I can walk our Springer and be completely in my own space, or I can choose to stop off by the ‘doggie beach’, throw a few sticks and stones into the water for Neo to chase whilst chatting to others; it’s sociable but relaxing at the same time.” Fellow dog walker, Liz Morgan agrees: “I walk my two English Springer Spaniels, Bella and Lily, on the Meadows two or three times a week. The wide open space allows you to cross paths with other walkers if you choose to, but is large enough not to if you don’t want to.”
60
“It’s a real privilege and quite unusual to have such a large space to walk a dog right in the centre of town. Our dogs love the Meadows, they really enjoy a swim in the river and roaming off the lead here too. There are always other dog walkers around who are invariably very friendly to chat to. Not only is it nice to bump into fellow pet owners, it is also very good for the dogs to get used to socialising with other animals.” Another open air spot where sociability is key and friendships are regularly forged is Stamford’s Skateboard Park. The £150,000 park opened on the Recreation Ground in 2013 after years of fundraising and petitioning for the facility. The project has been a huge success with hundreds of youngsters benefitting from the space. Here children as young as three or four regularly come and teeter up and down the smooth ramps testing their parent’s nerves as they trundle completely unaware alongside the much larger, faster and bolder teenager skaters, bikers and rollerbladers. As a mother of a fearless seven-year-old skateboarding son (Alfie), I have spent many hours watching my offspring seemingly dice with death as he ‘drops in’ from the highest ramps, my heart thudding in anticipation of the inevitable (yet occasional) misjudged manoeuvre which hurls him thudding sickeningly into the smooth, hard concrete. Each time this happens, without fail, there is always an older child there who will check Alfie’s ok and often offers to swap skate boards, almost intuitively as if he understands that distraction at the point of severe pain (and embarrassment) will smooth over the latest boarding catastrophe and turn it into a positive. “I started boarding up here when I was five,” explains Alfie. “I love being able to come up to the skate park and practise new tricks and turns. The older boys often show me new things and help
STAMFORD LIVING SEPTEMBER 2016

me to be a better skateboarder. They all call me Stamford’s Tony Hawk (famous American skateboarder) which makes me feel very proud.” On a sunny day the skate park is always a hive of activity, brimming with talented youngsters who come together, often forging long-term friendships based on a common interest, sheer hard work, determination, respect and a desire to prove to themselves that they can master that next trick or series of tricks and share this with their dedicated companions. However, if watching or hurling yourself headlong over lumps and bumps is not your scene, maybe a spot of football on the Recreation Ground is more appealing. It’s a great place for father and son bonding time, as seven-year-old George and his Dad, Ian Housley, explained. “We love being out in the fresh air. It’s a great place to come and run around, Stamford’s great for that. It gives the two of us a bit of exercise and it also gives George’s mum five minutes peace when we come and play up here!” added Ian. And the jewel in the crown of Stamford’s outdoor spaces has to be Burghley Park, with its rolling parkland originally laid out by Capability Brown. Nestling amidst this large and beautifully coiffured acreage is Burghley House itself, a stunning sixteenth-century country house with more chimneys than is possible to count! This truly extraordinary backdrop, including the wonderfully creative and mysterious Garden of Surprises, inspired by William Cecil’s lost Elizabethan garden, is the mecca for all manner of traditional pastimes. You name it and people do it in abundance in Burghley: picnic, play hide and seek, climb trees, watch the deer, sunbathe, walk, jog, ride bikes, pony ride, learn to roller skate, even sledge (weather permitting) along its walkways and paths. Lucy Juby from Nottingham visits Burghley regularly: “It’s got everything and is an ideal place to come and access green open space. We regularly meet up with family here as it’s roughly half way from Nottingham, where we live, and Bury St Edmunds, where my Step Mum and Dad live - and it’s free.” “We have been here since midday and, so far,
we have eaten in the café, visited the food market, and played cricket. Our children, Samuel (10) and Sophie (8) have been paddling in the fountains and climbing the logs and trees. It’s such a beautiful setting here, the kids absolutely love it. Burghley Park appeals to all ages, you really can’t beat days like this - being outdoors all day.” Local families, the Hoyles and the Keegans love bringing their children to meet up and play in the parkland too. “Since having children, we come up here a lot,” explains Rebecca Hoyles. “I come dog walking here regularly with my four-year-old riding his bike and my two-year-old on his scooter. It’s ideal - it’s free and there are not many cars.” Family friend, three-year-old Amalie Keegan, found her own special little spot on one of the very popular climbing logs to sit and take in the scenery. “I like walking here holding mummy’s hand,” she says. She also likes the Garden of Surprises and especially the water fountains, explains her mum. Another group of families from Spalding often converge at the Park to picnic and enjoy a wide range of activities which they told me includes: Scooting, penny boarding, playing cricket, walking, visiting the House, eating ice creams, paddling in the Garden of Surprises, watching the deer, enjoying the lake, lunching at the Orangery Restaurant and browsing in the gift shop. “It’s perfect and the public are really nice here,” explains picnicker Darren Smith from his comfy camping chair. Burghley House is of course, steeped in a wealth of history, so again makes an ideal venue for anyone wanting to exercise their minds. Stamford is the home of some truly extra special open air spaces. Next time you are admiring the architecture don’t forget to look at what lies in between the stone and slate - you might be surprised at what you find. STAMFORD LIVING SEPTEMBER 2016

LOCAL BUSINESS
A question of success: growing your business through your people As Stamford sees a growing number of new and emerging businesses in the area, local HR expert Nicola Eastwood sets out how employers can increase their chances of success by asking their employees a few key questions.
T
HE number of private sector SMEs based in our local area is currently growing and what differentiates these businesses from their larger competitors, who use economies of scale to deliver products at a lower cost, is their employees - their people. Smaller businesses are perfectly placed to encourage a culture of collaboration and transparency amongst their employees. This enables everyone to focus on shared goals, builds trust and gives the business an input from different perspectives, all of which increase the chances of business success. In practical terms, this means employers can grow the business and encourage employee engagement by simply asking employees the right questions. FIVE KEY QUESTIONS TO ASK YOUR EMPLOYEES ARE: 1. What blocks you from doing your job to the best of your abilities? Improving productivity could have a real impact on your profits. Maybe processes could be improved to remove duplication and inefficiency. Support your people to be the best they can be. 2. How do you think we could improve the business? Sometimes, you’re so involved in your own business that it’s hard to see the obvious. Every business wants to be innovative and you give yourself a much better chance of doing so if you involve everyone who works with your clients and customers day in, day out in what they really think your customers need. Not only will this give you some great ideas, but it gives a great boost to morale too. 3. What are we doing within the business that is no longer necessary? Outdated systems and procedures could be costing you a fortune and ensuring that you play small. It could be time to ditch the things that aren’t working, and start moving towards the future. Your employees keep things running on an operational basis, so it’s likely that they’ve got plenty of thoughts to share. 4. What are the areas of the business which interest you most? If you’re not nurturing your team’s need for personal growth and doing your bit to keep them motivated and on track, then a time will come
when they start to look elsewhere. Understanding their ambitions and aspirations, as well as their strengths, will help you align these with a role that’s the best fit for them (internally or externally) as well as help your succession planning. 5. How’s your work-life balance at the moment? Have you stopped to consider what your employees get up to outside of work and how this might affect their time? Time to relax and unwind is crucial to their well-being, so ask about your employees’ families, children, pets and interests. How could you support them in striking an effective balance? Showing an interest is often greatly appreciated, and it could help you to get a better understanding of wider issues that are having an impact on your workforce. This is not intended to be an employee survey, but by asking the right questions you might unearth a sprinkling of gems when it comes to working out what makes your employees tick and how your business can be run better. Neither should they be part of a one off conversation; by doing this on a regular basis, you’ll soon see positive changes to both the culture and bottom line of your business. Ask them, I dare you! BRINGING LOCAL FOOD TO LIFE
A big day out at I The Olive Branch Great Food Club is growing. To celebrate, the new editing team met up in Rutland... BY GFC FOUNDER: MATT WRIGHT
USUALLY use these two pages to tell you about local producers, pubs and restaurants. This time I wanted to let you know a little bit about my own project – Great Food Club – plus share a top-notch recipe. Hopefully you’re already a member of Great Food Club but if not and you love food and drink, you really should join. It’s free and signing up allows you to save a decent amount of money with your membership card (for example, you can enjoy offers like a free cocktail when you dine at The Olive Branch). The club’s main aim is to support and promote good local food and drink independents and to guide you to some brilliant hidden gems – head over to www. greatfoodclub.co.uk and take a look around. So, what’s new? Well, back in January 2016 I advertised for a team of regional editors to help with our mission of seeking out and shouting about the best local independent food businesses. Over 150 applications flooded in and after a lengthy selection process we now have 16 troops on the ground. They are now busy searching out gems in their home counties, including Norfolk, Suffolk, Rutland, Northamptonshire, Lincolnshire, Leicestershire, Nottinghamshire and more. Our new editors are passionate about locally produced food and drink, have great local knowledge, and are constantly adding their recommendations to the Great Food Club website and annual handbook. As a result, GFC now consists of over 320 recommended pubs, restaurants, producers and food shops, many of which run exclusive offers to our 9,000+ members. The club is growing by two new businesses per day and by around 50 new members per week. Our criteria for adding new food and drink businesses are simple: first, they have to be independent (so no chains); second, they have to be places we’d happily recommend to discerning friends. If they’re not, they don’t go in. If they are, they do.

Here’s the recipe for our main course on the day… Chargrilled breast of corn fed chicken, scorched gem lettuce, pine nuts, poached peach Serves 4
A trip to The Olive Branch With the new editing team finally in place, I wanted to get everyone together for a foodie celebration so they could all meet each other. What better location, I thought, than The Olive Branch in Clipsham, Rutland? It’s not far from GFC’s Melton Mowbray HQ and it’s a pub that’s still up there with the very best in the UK. So I called The Olive Branch and asked whether head chef Sean Hope would be able to put on a cookery demonstration for us. He agreed and a date was set. When we all arrived at The Olive Branch one sunny day back in July 2016, The Barn was set up with 17 chairs pointing towards a table topped by a variety of tempting ingredients. Sean proceeded to show us how to cook two summery dishes ¬– chargrilled breast of chicken, scorched gem lettuce, pine nuts and poached peach, followed by Eton Mess – before serving the same dishes to us all for lunch. The star of the chicken dish (recipe below) was the scorched gem lettuce, which is incredibly simple to prepare and added a huge amount to the ensemble. In my experience you never really consider griddling lettuce but this works a treat and would enhance so many main courses. Sean’s cookery demonstrations come highly recommended and if you haven’t experienced one before, you should give one a go, although they do get booked up well in advance. Call the pub on 01780 410355 to enquire when the next one will be held, or if like us you have a team of 20 or under, you may be able to get Sean to put one on specially. The demo plus lunch makes for an exceptional team-building day.
CHARGRILLED BREAST OF CHICKEN • 4 corn-fed chicken breasts • Sprig rosemary • Rapeseed oil • Salt and pepper Method 1. Place the chicken breast between two sheets of cling film and flatten to 1cm thick with a rolling pin. Discard the cling film. 2. Rub the rosemary onto the chicken breast and allow to infuse overnight. 3. Using a hot griddle pan, lay the chicken breast skin side down and cook for 2-3 minutes, turning around halfway to cook evenly. 4. Turn the breast over and grill again for an equal amount of time. 5. When cooked through, remove from the heat and allow to rest for two minutes before serving. SCORCHED GEM LETTUCE • 4 heads gem lettuce, cut into four wedges and washed • 1 lemon • 1 litre of cold water • 10g table salt • Rapeseed oil Method 1. Place the prepared gem lettuce into a large bowl. 2. Sprinkle the salt onto the lettuce and pour over the water. 3. Mix well, cover with cling film and chill for 20 minutes. 4. Remove the gem lettuce from the brine solution and rinse under cold water. 5. Pat dry with kitchen paper, drizzle with rapeseed oil then char on a grill or bbq for two minutes. 6. Squeeze the lemon juice over the lettuce and serve. POACHED PEACH • 3 ripe peaches/nectarines, cut into quarters • 500ml sugar syrup • 1 lime cut into quarters • Small cinnamon stick • Petal star anise • 1 tablespoon of sherry vinegar Method 1. In a large saucepan place the sugar syrup, cinnamon, star anise, lime and vinegar and bring to the boil. 2. Add the prepared fruit, bring back to the boil and remove from the heat. 3. Cover with cling film and allow to stand for 10 minutes before serving. 4. Put everything together and serve with toasted pine nuts sprinkled over the top.
Join Great Food Club With its new editing team, Great Food Club is on a mission to unearth brilliant food and drink gems in your area and beyond. We currently recommend around 320 pubs, restaurants, producers and food shops, and around 200 of them run exclusive offers for Great Food Club members. Offers include 10% off at Stamford Cheese Cellar, 10% off at The Tobie Norris, a complimentary cocktail when you dine from the a la carte menu at The Olive Branch, 10% off at The King’s Arms in Wing, and 25% off at The Fox & Hounds in Exton. It is completely free to join and get a membership card – no catches – and we never share your data – sign up at www.greatfoodclub.co.uk

TIM LUFF HEAD CHEF AND JOINT OWNER OF NO.3 THE YA R D , S TA M F O R D
Deborah Pennell meets up with Tim Luff at one of Stamford’s top restaurants. Tell me a little bit about yourself I was born in Portsmouth and have lived in Oakham, and now Stamford since I was 7 years old. What jobs have you had since working as a chef? I have worked for about 17 years as a chef, in various jobs, including a stint at Mallory Court in Leamington Spa and running a pub near Stratford upon Avon. More locally, I spent 9 years at The Olive Branch under Sean Hope, working my way up to Head Chef. Sean is a completely inspirational chef and I count myself lucky to have worked with him. During my time at The Olive Branch, we won a Michelin Star. I left to pursue an exciting opportunity with Marcus Welford, a great mate. We re-opened The Northwick Arms, in Ketton on a lease, making a huge success of it. Very sadly one day, the pubs owner decided to sell the pub, along with others, and we were left looking for new horizons. I bought the premises of the former Jim’s Yard in August 2014. What are the demands of being a chef? Being a chef is immensely hard work and you have to be completely dedicated. My week consists of 6 days working from 10am -10/11pm at night. I absolutely love having my own business. Being your own boss at the age of 32 has the added pressures of employing others, 20 staff at the moment, but I feel a great sense of satisfaction at the end of each day knowing that whatever I have achieved I have done for myself, with my team. What do you like most about working at No.3 The Yard? I love the fact that we are situated right in the heart of Stamford but we have created our own little oasis and I have a great team working with me.
66
How would you describe your food and how often do you change the menu? My food is Modern British with influences from around the world, including Asian and Middle Eastern. Our menu changes with the seasons but I often add dishes depending on what my suppliers, who include Stilton Butchers and Lavinton Lamb, have coming through. I work really closely with them to use seasonal produce and fit my menus around what is available, or in abundance, at any one given time. Looking at the menu, 2 courses at £15.95 and 3 courses at £19.50, offer great value for money with incredibly delicious offerings such as Thai Fishcakes with fennel, carrot and cucumber salad, Lamb burgers, black garlic mash, and Wasabi marinated Cod, coconut and spring onion noodles with Japanese seaweed salad. The Lunchtime menu offers snacks and light lunches and Dinner is an a la Carte style menu. You also do BBQs during the summer. Are these popular? We have a fabulous Kadi Fire Bowl BBQ, although this year with the poor weather we haven’t used it as often as I would have liked. We cook wonderful things such as maple glazed spatchcocked poussin, grilled lobster tails, homemade burgers and marinated bourbon sticky ribs. We post our BBQ dates on the website.
If you could choose your favourite dish, what would it be? I absolutely love slow cooked Oxtail accompanied by a delicious risotto. Give me an interesting fact about No.3 the Yard I think the two things that excite me most about The Yard are the Courtyard which is such a wonderful place to sit and eat, and the kitchen, which is fitted with top of the range equipment, making our job as chefs so much easier. What are your interests outside of work? When time allows, I really enjoy a round of golf at the Rutland County Golf Club. I mountain bike, and I also have two dogs, a West Highland and a miniature Schnauzer - they are great company, and keep me fit, as they always need walking. • To sample food from one of the Stamford’s top chefs, at an affordable price, find No.3 The Yard, just off Ironmonger Street, Stamford, PE9 1PL. Have you ever cooked for anyone famous? I’m not really one to recognise celebrities, but I remember one of the managers coming into the kitchen and saying Ralph Little from 2 pints of Lager and a Packet of Crisps was in the restaurant, and on another occasion Rowan Atkinson.

The Wine Bar, Stamford Nearly two years ago one of Stamford’s most popular venues for fine wines, good coffee and a well-liked catch up venue wasn’t here, so how’s it going?
A
s one of Stamford’s world famous events, Burghley Horse Trials, is another year older it makes you realise how quickly the time passes! I mean, where has 2016 gone, more importantly where did the summer of 2016 go…Luckily The Wine Bar, on St Paul’s Street in Stamford, has been serving a superb array of wine, specialist spirits and superb platters all summer long. Like a hidden gem The Wine Bar has a fantastic outdoor space which surprises much of the clientele, shhhhh…. just don’t tell everyone! So after nearly two years for the owners Alex Way and Stephen MIskell, how is it going? Both still smiling, looking a little older but both still loving running one of Stamford’s most popular venues, the boys are doing well. With an ever-increasing team of friendly and knowledgeable staff it just means there are more people to argue about what to put on the wine list! With regularly changing wine menu’s you’ll be sure to find something new to try, if not, how about coming along to one of The Wine Bar’s regular wine tastings and expanding your wine knowledge. Whilst starting out with 6 different gins, The Wine Bar has now expanded slightly…. to 25 different gins. But why… well Alex says ‘‘we like to respond to customers and what they would like, gin is very popular so we like to try some new products. There’s just so much to choose from!’’ Luckily there is a Gin and Tonic for every palette, feel free to ask the staff to recommend you one.
The Wine Bar: things have got busier, they’ve expanded but are still run by the same ethos: to create a friendly atmosphere where one is made to feel welcome and relaxed whilst enjoying fine wines, specialist spirits and good company! • Open Sun-Thur 10am - 11pm, Fri-Sat 10am - 12 midnight. 10 St Paul’s Street, Stamford Tel: 01780 757 844. OUT & ABOUT
Andy loves life in the fishing lodge at Rutland Water
A small team is responsible for managing Rutland Water and the land surrounding it. They play a vital role in maintaining an environment enjoyed by thousands of people every week. Nick Rennie dropped into the Anglian Water fishing lodge to meet the man in charge of the operation
A
S views from the office window go, it’s not too bad at all. As Andy Ainscough relaxes at his desk he gazes out at a row of fishing boats and the gentle majesty of Rutland Water. Not that his job involves a lot of sitting down. As head ranger at the reservoir for Anglian Water, he and his team are responsible for maintaining the threeand-a-half acres of water, the banks and all the angling activities which take place there. He also has to look after the little matter of 28 miles of track which wind around the banks of the lake and all of the car parks. The rain was battering down on the roof of the fishing lodge, on the south-eastern shore at Edith Weston, when I visited Andy. “The job is so varied,” he said, handing me a welcome cup of tea. “This morning, for example, I came in and unlocked the car park to find that there were 70 or 80 sheep on the frontage. They had got through from the field so I helped the farmer to usher them back. It had been raining heavily so I then had to pump out 30 or 40 fishing boats which were full of water.” Andy has three other full-time rangers assisting him and during the peak periods at the reservoir – April to September - additional staff are drafted in. He has only been in charge for a year, following the retirement of John Seaton, who served 30 years in the role. “The best part of the job for me is the angling, being a keen angler myself. It’s a really prestigious role in the sport because Rutland Water is viewed as the Wembley of fly fishing.” Born in Oakham, he believes he was one of the last babies born in the town hospital before the maternity unit closed, Andy was brought up in Langham. He studied marine and fresh water biology at university and
when a ranger’s vacancy came up at Rutland Water six years ago he saw it as the perfect job for him. “People come from all over the UK, Ireland and Europe to fish here. We have a party of six men here from Scotland at the moment and they’re having a great time despite the rain. We see a lot of the same faces every week and there is a real community of anglers here – it’s a nice social thing as well as the sport.” The reservoir is stocked with 80,000 trout every year. Fish farmers arrive at regular intervals with their lorries and the trout are pumped directly into the lake through soft piping. “An increasingly popular branch of the sport is fishing for predatory fish such as pike and zander and that is certainly the case here,” explained Andy. Anglers, who can stock up on accessories at the tackle shop adjacent to the fishing lodge, can buy various tickets over the season. Many locals opt for season tickets. They can choose to fish from the banks or in one of the 65 boats available at the reservoir. Rutland Water Fly Fishers is the club associated with the lake and it organises regular matches throughout the year. Perhaps the biggest event is the Anglian Water Airflo International, for teams of six anglers. Qualifying competitions are held ahead of the October finals. There is a real water craft the best anglers use to land the biggest catches, the location of which can vary day to day. “The best anglers sniff out where the best catches are,” said Andy. “It all depends on three things – the food in the water, wind direction and water temperature.” He was working the night Empingham angler Tom Cooper landed the biggest ever trout at Rutland Water three years ago – a monster 17lb 6oz specimen. Andy recalled: “He brought it into the lodge towards the end of my shift and he was so excited because it was breath-taking.” Andy, who is married to occupational therapist Lucy, has had little time to indulge his passion for fishing recently since the birth of his daughter, Iris, five months ago. But for now he is enjoying holding the reins at one of the largest artificial lakes in Europe. “I enjoy seeing the guys enjoying their fishing and running the lodge to the best of my ability,” he added. • For more information on angling at Rutland Water go online at www. anglianwater.co.uk/leisure/water-parks/rutland/fishing or telephone 01780 686441. UPDATES
From Stamford to Zimbabwe When Stamford resident Cathie Freeman started volunteering at the local Oxfam shop she never imagined she would get the opportunity to travel to see first-hand the charity’s work overseas. The tour organised by Oxfam GB visited Zimbabwe, travelling over 900 miles, to see projects that demonstrated the diversity of Oxfam’s work with local partner groups.
“I
T really put into perspective the difference that donating to Oxfam could make to the lives of so many.” In Harare they saw a Community Garden group, where Oxfam had installed solar pumps to access clean water, negotiated for land, arranged agricultural training, provided seeds and fertilizer. The group is now self- sufficient and training others in the community to grow their own fresh food. Two projects in Bulawayo focussed women. One helped women affected by HIV and AIDS, who were acting as carers. By setting up savings and loan schemes they were able to start locally-needed cottage industries, making them financially independent. The other focused on young girls, many teenage mothers, to build their self-confidence, find employment
and educate them in their health rights. An irrigation project in the remote Ruti district had developed, with joint funding from the United Nations, into a re-usable energy scheme involving solar pumps for water access, solar lighting and energy. Farmers, villagers, schools, a shop and clinics were benefiting from this free source of energy. Over 9,000 people benefited through this project. Sekai Chitombo in Ruti explained: “Now I have cash my children can have an education. We are smart, we bathe, we are clean, and we have light. I can sit next to you confidently because I know I do not smell.” • If you or group you are involved with would like to hear more contact Cathie Freeman at Stamford Oxfam shop on 01780 765303

invaluable work of Evergreen. “We encourage any local entrepreneurs who would like to get involved in helping older members of the community to come along to the launch event. Whether you are a large corporate organisation or an independent business, any assistance you can give, be it financial support or the offer of expertise or services, Evergreen would put it to good use.” “In return, we will facilitate four business networking opportunities each year and promote our corporate sponsors on the Lighthouse website and our social media channels to raise awareness of their contribution to the charity.” “A special thanks goes to James Bolitho from Inception Design and Emma Holttum from Marketing Perks. James and Emma became our first Beacons by Building our Lighthouse site and raising awareness of Evergreen via social media. This has all been done on voluntary basis. They are both extremely talented and will be attending the Lighthouse Launch”. Tickets to the event are limited and cost £10. A wild yurt for a wild child Georgie Fenn catches up with two Stamford School Boys that have landed on their feet back in Stamford and set up their own bespoke yurt making company
I
T begins at Stamford Boys’ School, two friends, William Montgomery (Monty) and Dan Smeeth become the best of friends but each go on their separate adventures when the time comes to leave charming little Stamford. Dan’s adventure took him off to London where he did a Foundation Degree in Illustration at the University of Arts, this later made him realise his passion for architecture (we won’t go into how.) So off Dan went to Edinburgh to study the finer world of Architecture for probably far too long. This took him to Amsterdam and Istanbul creating memories in stone that will remain for ever. Dan finished himself off with big travels to South America where he built all sorts of things and he’s finally weaved his way back to the relative safety of Stamford. Monty, well Monty travelled straight after school and did South East Asia and South America and had a jolly good time before heading off to University with big plans for a thriving career after studying Philosophy and Economics at Nottingham University. The economics provided the financial means to pursue what could have been a wealthy career but Monty soon realised it wasn’t for him and he wanted to do some sort of aid work instead. He realised to get truly involved in this you had to have a masters so he set about getting one of those next at The School of Oriental and African Studies which he found really interesting and went on to work for the Beckley Foundation. Following this, like Da,n Monty had the impulse desire to use his hands and build things so went into carpentry; and then in a nuclear storm both Dan and Monty ended up back in Stamford together and with their similar desires to make a difference in the world, help people, be outside and use their hands – they started making yurts. So for the modern people out there a yurt is an original house, picture a tepee but with a much sturdier structure – a posh tent if you will.
Perhaps you’ve thought about buying a Wendy house for the kids but thought…not that exciting, bit of a pain to put up and it’s there forever once it’s there. Maybe…you’re trying to get your kids outside to do more running around and playing like children should (obesity being such a huge factor these days too) and you’ve considered a trampoline, a tennis table, all manner of things but have you considered a yurt? Now if you’re like me you’re probably picturing a tepee or something equally flimsy that won’t stand your terrors and their team of even more terrible terrors running rampage in it. No – the yurts these boys are making are far more special than that and they’re making them here in our very own little Stamford. So what can they do for you…imagine your perfect yurt, any colour, all means of special effects and when the children are away you can take the roof off and gaze at the stars with your significant other and take yourselves back to your childhood in the great outdoors. Dan and Monty are keen to help, very friendly and happy to chat so you can give them a call on: Dan: 0790358925 Monty: 07865494793 Or email: wildchildyurts@zoho.com to find out more information regarding prices etc.

The Friends Support Stamford Hospital with a book launch “The Story of Stamford Hospital: as told in the 19th, 20th and 21st centuries.”
T
HE story of Stamford Hospital started in 1823 with the death of Henry Fryer, a prominent local surgeon. His estate included £7,477 set aside to establish an Infirmary and this was built on land provided by the Marquess of Exeter. The Hospital opened in 1828, the final cost of construction being £5,793 12s. 1d. The Hospital’s story over the next 188 years gives a vivid and fascinating insight into the development of healthcare and the changing nature of society. Three accounts have been written and are presented sequentially in this book. The first history, published in 1879, was written by William Newman, an eminent surgeon who worked at the Hospital for over 30 years. He was devoted to the Hospital and had many interests outside medicine, notably in history and photography, and was one of many inspirational clinicians who have worked in Stamford. He was responsible for several imaginative innovations, not least the design and construction of the three Fever Blocks, very necessary in a time when infections such as typhoid, cholera, diphtheria and scarlet fever were common and often fatal. The detailed planning of these facilities is well described in his account. A second history was commissioned and published by the Friends of Stamford Hospital in 1978 to mark the 150th anniversary of the Hospital and the 30th anniversary of the incorporation of the Hospital into the newly formed National Health Service in 1948. This account gives a more modern perspective on the origins of the Hospital and describes the changes through most of the 20th century including the effects of two World Wars and the introduction of the NHS. Both of these histories were published in pamphlets, not books, and there was a risk that they would be lost in the future. The committee of the Friends of Stamford Hospital has decided to republish them in a book, and include a third section describing the most recent history taking the story up to 2015. This new book is available for purchase from:
1. The volunteers at reception at Stamford Hospital. Price £8. or 2. By post. Please send a cheque for £10 [which includes £2 for P&P] and your name and address to: The Friends of Stamford Hospital, 9 Haddon Road,, Stamford, PE9 2UW • For more details on the Friends of Stamford Hospital, and information on how to become a member, please visit: www.friendsofstamfordhospital.org.uk
Give it a Try: Bowling Open Mornings
W
HILE the Rio Olympics will have proved an inspiration to youngsters considering becoming athletes in a wide range of disciplines, few, if any, sports can match bowls when it comes to being competitive against opponents aged eight to 80. For decades the game has battled against a stigma of being perceived as only taken up when you draw a pension. But a glance at those who represent England for example, will reveal a fair smattering of under 25s
as well as those in their 40s. So much for bowls being only for the elderly. With this in mind, Stamford Indoor Bowls Club - a splendid six rink arena off Exeter Gardens with ample car-parking - is inviting anyone keen to try the sport to give it a go at one of its Open Mornings on either September 17 or 24 (from 9.30am). Equipment is provided free of charge and coaches and experienced bowlers will be on hand to introduce the sport and encourage newcomers to join a club which is approaching a 600 membership, playing up to seven days a week in any one of up to six daily sessions. Says the club’s president Bob Warters, an example of someone who achieved county and national singles titles aged 67: “Bowls is the epitome of a sport in which you can be competitive even in later life. Some of us might draw the line at being described as athletes but it is a sport where experience and hand-eye coordination are perhaps more important than stamina.” The club’s youngest member is eight years old and its oldest in their 90s but whatever their age, whether male or female, all compete on equal terms and are keen to share their experiences with newcomers to the sport in a welcoming social atmosphere. With its restaurant, bar and raised viewing area Stamford IBC provides first class facilities not only for its sport but merely as a meeting point for socialising. • For more information about the Open days visit www.stamfordindoorbowls.co.uk or call 01780 756452. Conservation, Conservation, Conservation... Rannveig Stone looks at the ins and outs of conservation and restoration
D
O you own a listed and derelict outbuilding and are not sure what you are allowed to do with it? Does the thought of conservation and planning regulations put you off buying a listed property? Or have you jumped in feet first and bought your picturesque dream home but haven’t the faintest idea what being listed might entail? South Kesteven is the most heritage rich local authority district in the East midlands boasting 120 Grade 1 listed buildings, 200 Grade II* listed buildings, 2,280 Grade II listed building and 9 registered historic parks. If purchasing a listed building and contemplating major alterations, ask yourself first if it is the right building for you. Renovating a listed property will not only involve your selves, there will be the conservation and planning office, your neighbours and possibly the parish council all having a say in what you want to achieve. Not for the faint hearted, however pre planning and building good relations from the very start will go a long way into making it a relatively smooth process. “Whilst working on listed buildings and in conservations areas it is imperative to be aware of how your development sits within the local environment, it’s a big responsibility developing an historic building as it can have wider implications. Our Cobblestone Yard development was a prime example. We had a fantastic derelict range of buildings that we wanted to sympathetically refurbish, but also push the boundaries and move away from replicating what had previously been done. Working very early and closely alongside the planner and conservation officer at SKDC, we were able to bring these historic premises into the 21st century.” Andrew Beeson “Pre-application discussions provide greater certainty for applicants and developers about the likely outcome from the planning process. They also help to improve the quality of design, encourage greater public consultation and enable the council to process planning applications more quickly.” SKDC DON’T UNDER ESTIMATE THE BUDGET Local builder Dennis Smith says “do not underestimate the cost or time a listed development may take. By pre planning before submitting drawings and engaging contractors you will save your self a lot of wasted time and money; however as with all old properties it is hard to quantify the amount of work that will be needed. It often takes much longer to preserve rather than re build and you are never sure what you will uncover until you start.” He recommends adding an extra 25/30%

Cobblestone Yard, Bath Row, Stamford. Beeson Wright Ltd contingency on top of your budget sum if tackling a listed property in this area. Stamford Stone have source of the UK famous Clipsham limestone and one of the countries most advanced masonry production facilities, which in turn makes them more cost competitive. Much of Stamford town centre was built in the 17th and 18th centuries, in Jacobean or Georgian style with timber frames and stone buildings, most of which came from the same stone used to build Lincoln Cathedral, Clipsham Limestone. “Traditionally in Stamford, Ashlar, a
finely dressed stone worked until squared, was widely used. It is more expensive than rubble walling stone, so developers today, work in a similar way to days gone by, when Ashlar was saved for the front façade, with ornate door surrounds, fluted pilasters and decorative capitals and money was saved on the side and rear of the properties, with the use of rubble stone, equally as structurally sound and beautiful,… but perhaps not as dramatic.” Laura Green, Director of Stamford Stone Stephen Wright from Heritage Roofing is
FACTS It is a criminal offence to under take work on a listed property without formal authorisation it is also advisable to check before purchasing that all previous works had the necessary consents. Otherwise you may be forced to put these changes right. Before drawing up any plans or involving builders seek advice from the conservation office. Their role is to provide advice and guidance to owners of historic buildings; and by getting them involved early on will help manage the costs. Don’t forget your neighbours! Fellow local residents and parish councils will always have a view so talking to them with your initial ideas before submitting to planning may help avoid any potential disagreements and objections further down the line. Emergency work can be carried out providing you can prove it was necessary due to safety, health and preservation of the building. Work was kept to the bare minimum necessary and written justification is sent promptly in to the local authority. Engage contractors that have the experience and appropriate knowledge of traditional methods of construction. The use of modern methods and materials can irreversibly damage the building and therefore its importance as a heritage asset. Historic pointing should be retained and its style copied in any new repointing works proposed so that the existing masonry can perform naturally and avoid damage. Poor repointing can also take away valuable clues to a buildings construction and history. Conservation believes windows are an important contributor to a buildings character and that replacing them with modern double glazed alternatives will compromise this. If you are granted permission to replace and not simply repair, it is likely to be with an identical single glazed unit out of hard wood, single glazing and putty. In a day and age of needing to improve the thermal efficiency of buildings and mitigate climate change you will need to consider draught-proofing and secondary glazing to raise the U-factor rating.

Wansford THE MAKING OF WANSFORD Settlement at Wansford, with its ford across the River Nene, must have taken place long ago. Roman villas and quarries have been found nearby and possibly they built a bridge for the movement of soldiers and officials to take Ermine Street across the river. There was also an east-west route just above the valley where goods such as corn, pottery, stone and timber could be brought and loaded onto river boats. These route-ways continued to be important in the Saxon era; important enough for the village to have a stone-towered church. That tower remains as the lower part of the present tower including a pre-Conquest window inside the church. The rest of the original church would have been wooden; however it was soon rebuilt in stone and by the early 13th century the nave and aisles had taken the shape they have today. About the same time Henry III granted oak to repair the bridge so there was certainly a wooden bridge by then. Medieval Wansford centred on the crossroads north of the river with wharves and jetties, warehouses and mills along the river itself. The bridge was badly damaged in 1571 and was replaced with one of 13 stone arches in 1577. Alterations were made in 1672 and the southern end rebuilt (after another serious flood) in 1795 but much remains. A 1748 Act of Parliament required the improvement of the Great North Road between Stamford and Wansford and such Improvements meant the village became an increasingly important staging post with a number of inns and hostelries. Fine, stone and Collyweston-tiled buildings are witness to the continued prosperity of both river and road in the 18th and early 19th centuries. The coming of the railway sent these activities into decline. Instead, the village became home to agricultural and estate workers with new cottages extending along the approach roads. As the 20th century dawned the bridge intended for pedestrians, animals, wagons and coaches was not suitable for the motor car and certainly not for the motor lorry! A bypass for the Great North Road was built as early as the 1920s. HAYCOCK The Haycock has served travellers since the 16th century when it was known as the Swan. By 1632 it was a posting house serving

the many coaches travelling north and south, providing fresh horses, food and accommodation for travellers. A hundred and fifty horses could be stabled there. There was also a cock fighting loft. Mary Queen of Scots reputedly stayed at The Haycock on her way to Fotheringhay. In 1832 Princess Victoria (later the Queen) stayed there on her way to meet the Archbishop of York. Many other princes and princesses are also known to have stayed there. During the 19th century the hotel owned a farm of 625 acres, enabling the hotel to be self- sufficient. Anthony Percival, the owner, had won the hotel in a game of cards. The inn was converted into a private house in 1898 for Major General Charles Cavendish, 3rd Baron Lord Chesham but then he was killed hunting with the Pytchley. In 1911 Stanley Brotherhood lived there while his house at Thornhaugh was being built. The next occupant was Sir Bache Cunard grandson of the founder of Cunard shipping line. He moved there in 1914 from Nevill Holt for financial reasons. Sir Bache opened an ordnance factory in the cock fighting loft to make shells during WWI.. In 1928 it reverted again to an inn after Cunard’s death. It was bought by Charles Allday, a local dairy farmer. In the 1930s a sprung floor from Covent Garden was bought for the ballroom. The Embassy Theatre, Peterborough, booked accommodation for stars including Laurel and Hardy and George Formby. In WWII the hotel was popular with the RAF. It has changed hands several times since 1960 and is now run by Macdonald Hotels. It has been renovated and restored and as well as accommodation is now a popular restaurant, wedding venue and conference centre.
THE 1920S BRIDGE From the 1920s the engineer-architect Sir Owen Williams created many daring concrete structures. These included, in collaboration with the architect Maxwell Ayrton, Wansford bridge (1925-9) which carried the A1 over the River Nene on the Wansford Bypass. Today it carries only the northbound carriageway. It is listed Grade II*.

Refreshments • The Paper Mills is dog friendly and food is available 11.30am - 3pm and in the evening (closed on Mondays) • The Haycock, Wansford’s most famous inn, uses locally sourced food which is served all day every day • The Cross Keys is dog friendly, has a lovely back garden but may only be open in evenings Walking • From the Bridge you can walk along the river to Yarwell • From the church take the road towards Yarwell and Old Sulehay Forest can be entered by several paths on the right • The two walks can be combined by walking through Yarwell village
PAPER MILLS The Paper Mills public house is a reminder of a flourishing 19th century business which was once nearby. Richard Newcomb, the proprietor of the Stamford Mercury and a dynamic figure, was determined to produce a paper of the highest quality. For this reason he bought the paper mill at Wansford in 1824. The 17th century mill had been rebuilt in 1805 following a fire. It was in an ideal situation on the River Nene and adjacent to the Great North Road providing transport for the paper. Newcomb employed a manager to run the mill. The paper was made from cotton rags. The bales of rags were unloaded at the Paper Mills wharf and 40-50 women were employed to remove the buttons. The paper was of an excellent quality, not only providing newspaper for the Stamford Mercury but also for the Times and another London paper, The Weekly Dispatch. The Mill House, later renamed Stibbington House, was included in the sale. The house had been rebuilt in 1810 and later had a lodge designed by Teulon (see below). Richard Newcomb divided his time between Stibbington House in Wansford and Rock House in Stamford. He built a row of houses in the village, called the Barracks, to house his workers. He also built a clubroom (7 Chapel Row) for the employees, which Newcomb allowed the Wesleyans to use as a chapel. In 1855 one of the steam boilers exploded and the mill closed. The Mercury then used a cheaper paper made from esparto grass but the quality was poor in comparison. TEULON, BEDFORD & THE WANSFORD LOOK Samuel Sanders Teulon (1812-73) belonged to a group of 19C architects who spearheaded the Gothic Revival style. He set up practice in 1838
and designed schools, parsonages, churches and country houses mostly for aristocratic clients. The most important of these was the Duke of Bedford who employed Teulon to provide estate buildings. He felt an estate owner should supply, “good and comfortable cottages in which the decencies and dignity of human life may be maintained”. Teulon’s great-great-nephew and biographer, Alan Teulon, commented that “most of his work was done for the Duke of Bedford around Wansford”. This has often been overlooked in architectural books that only cite Teulon’s work on model villages such as Thorney (commissioned by the Duke from 1848). At Wansford the buildings are scattered, making a less immediate visual impact but they produce the ‘Wansford Look’ using local building materials and blending with earlier houses. They date from the 1850s and demonstrate the Duke’s principles, providing for separate eating and living quarters and bedrooms for children apart from their parents. Date-stones and the initial B identify cottages on the east side of Elton Road and the west side of London Road. Less typical of Teulon’s work, but attributed to him, are Goss Cottages, numbers 2 & 4 on the west side of Elton Road. A distinctive house is 19 Old North Road commissioned for the estate cooper with a single storey cooper’s workshop attached. Teulon at his more flamboyant is demonstrated in the gatehouse to Stibbington House. He loved varied rooflines, gables, bays, porches, tall chimneys and if he could incorporate one, a tower. The ‘tower’ at Stibbington House was actually a ventilator for an earth closet! STAMFORD LIVING SEPTEMBER 2016

MEET THE MAKER If you’re going to Stamford, be sure to wear some flowers in your hair. Clare Kelly meets Svetlana Faulkner of Present Perfect Creations.
ON YOUR HEAD, BE IT
H
OLDING one of Svetlana’s delicate flowers in your hand, it’s impossible to resist the urge to literally stop and smell the roses. You could try of course, but although completely lifelike, these botanical beauties are the creations of Svetlana’s imagination. Adoring the head of brides, bridesmaids and those with something to celebrate, Present Perfect Creations offers unique pieces – butterflies to play in children’s hair and a virtual garden of flora. Cherry red dahlias are made of leather, pansies of velvet and pink silk camellias are clustered as if just plucked from an English country garden. At home in Stamford, Svetlana is passionate about horticulture and joined the RHS so she could be inspired by the many rarities she encounters in some of the UK’s greatest gardens. So at home here, it’s hard to believe she has only left Russia five years ago, where she worked as a manager for an international hotel in Moscow. Being bilingual in business has definitely worked to her advantage and she says: “Being able to speak more than one language, I find myself in the position of being capable to combine and improve the knowledge of other artists in the industry from around the world. I love sharing my knowledge and experience with other like-minded artists and milliners in the UK as well as from abroad.” With a restless toddler to contend with, Svetlana juggles her life with the greatest of organisation but when it comes to her designs, the process is altogether much freer: “I start with an idea for a collection, for example a colour combination or a particular selection of flowers – I do not sketch, but imagine a piece in my head and work from there. It is not uncommon for me to stay awake until the small hours assembling pieces or working on the computer replying to emails and updating my website. Because I hand paint most of the fabrics I use, I also need to spend what time I can during the day on my flowers when the light is good. One might say that I tend to burn the candle at both ends, but then when you’re passionate about what you do, why not?” Such intricate designs clearly take time, some take more than a week and once the flowers have been created, they need to be moved onto an accessory so they can be worn on the head: “I start by cutting out petals, leaves and other parts required for a piece from pre-stiffened fabrics.
Some roses take up to 160 petals. It’s a lot of cutting!” This is only part of the process; each individual petal is touched by her hand just as you would if you were a gardener tending to your David Austin’s: “Then I mix the dyes and colour each and every petal and leaf by hand. After the parts have dried, they need shaping with the hot millinery tools. At this stage they start resembling real petals and leaves. Then I assemble them into a flower and finish the flower to turn it into a wearable accessory, which can be a brooch, a headband – even shoe clips.” With a workshop full of materials and a head full of ideas, growing her business as a teacher was a natural step. Watching others bloom, it seems continues to delight her. Revealing that her “tools are really an extension of her hands” it can be hard to differentiate one from the other and the process is seamlessly intertwined. Her creations are never made for her to keep captive, instead they spread their wings across the world flying into the lives of her delighted customers: “One of my signature pieces is a silk and lace butterfly headband. Initially this was commissioned for a little girl by her mum for a photo shoot. It was made in sky blue to match the little girl’s dress. Since then I have created countless butterflies in pastels and bright colours for other little girls around the globe.” With most of her business coming from the States, it’s ironic then that the thistle, a flower synonymous with Scotland has become one of her bestsellers: “I’m very proud of my leather thistle corsage. This commission came from a gentleman in the USA and was meant as a wedding anniversary gift for his beloved wife. As you probably know, the third wedding anniversary is about leather gifts and most of my leather designs are purchased by men as gifts for their wives.” From her Stamford studio, she watches the world go by and in sending out her flowers and butterflies, she is in turn, sending a little of our favourite town out into the big, wide world. • Find out more at: www.presentperfectcreations.com www.facebook.com/PresentPerfectCreations www.instagram.com/presentperfect_creations www.presentperfectcreations.com STAMFORD LIVING SEPTEMBER 2016

Carol Holland, club medic to Stamford AFC

Stamford Football Club has a new club medic and she has already become a firm favourite with staff and supporters. Carol Holland is responsible for treating injuries and keeping the players match fit. Nick Rennie met up with her at the Zeeco Stadium to find out more about her job.
T’S not easy for a woman going into a testosterone-filled changing room to treat the injuries of a squad of top amateur male footballers. But Carol Holland – head of medical for Stamford AFC – loves her role. The 45-year-old took over physiotherapy duties at the Zeeco Stadium in June and she has already built up a firm bond with both coaches and players. “Because I am a bit older than the players I’m a bit like a mother figure to them,” said Carol. “I was in the RAF for 12 years so I’ve got life experience and I can hold my own when it comes to a bit of banter.” Carol now has her own physio room at the ground after complaining there wasn’t one when she arrived. She still spends time in the changing room, though, and says the players are comfortable getting changed and showering around her. “It wasn’t fair on the players me being in the changing room all the time when I arrived at the club so I voiced my concerns and I have my own room now,” said mother-of-three Carol. “The lads don’t bother about me being there if they are changing – they treat me as one of the lads, to be honest.” Stamford is the fifth football club Carol has worked for as a therapist – she began with Deeping Rangers Reserves eight years ago and has also been on the staff at Blackstones, Holbeach United and St Neots. Her previous career in the RAF involved administration work but she decided to retrain after getting interested in sports massage. She is qualified in massage and holistic therapies and has football-specific FA-accredited sports therapy qualifications. Carol decided to do the training after spending many hours watching her son, Vance (now 15), play football. And she’s never regretted becoming a football medic. “I love seeing players back on the field fit again after working through rehab with them,” she said. “You get to know your players and I know straight away during a match if someone is injured or if they are just trying to win a free kick.” Female sports physios have been big news in the last year, of course. Chelsea suspended Eva Carneiro from her job as first team doctor after the then manager José Mourinho complained about her racing on to the pitch to treat a player in a Premier League match. She has now left the sport after getting an out-of-court settlement. Carol said: “When the referee calls you on to the field, as happened with Eva, you have to go on. “For a manager to then criticise you for doing your job is not fair at all.” She says that scenario will never happen with Stamford manager Graham Drury, who Carol also worked with at Holbeach United. “We have a great manager/physio relationship,” she explained. “Graham would never stop me running on the pitch if the ref calls me on or if I think a player is injured – he trusts my professional opinion.” Carol does have experience of falling out with a manager though over injuries to players he thought weren’t injured. She says: “It happened twice last season with St Neots. Both times the manager said ‘he’s OK, he’ll get up in a minute’ but I knew I had to go on. “The first player turned out to have a broken nose and the second had a broken leg. We had a big argument over it later.” Carol quickly felt at home at Stamford and she loves the atmosphere at the Zeeco Stadium. “The fans are superb,” she beamed. “When I am walking around to the dug-outs I like to chat to people in the crowd and if you’ve been on the pitch to treat a player people will shout out things like ‘well done phys’.” Carol’s husband, Julian, also works on medical duties with a football club. He uses his first aid skills learned as a retained firefighter to treat Holbeach United footballers. Aside from son Vance, the couple also have a son Thomas (17) and 20-year-old daughter Danni, who is a professional dancer. The family live in Deeping St James. Carol also works for the Football CV Academy, based at the Stamford AFC stadium. And she also runs private fitness classes using hula hoops, working on core fitness, posture, strength and co-ordination. She added: “I love working in football and I would recommend more women get involved if they get the chance.” • To contact Carol for sports therapy or private fitness classes call her on 07950 412074.
