S July approaches, so our collective thoughts turn to the sea and escaping to our very own patch, North Norfolk. Everyone has their favourite spot to walk and place to eat; and there is always the fiercest of arguments as to which is the ‘best’ beach, balancing distance with accessibility and ‘unspoilt-ness’. For me, it always has to be approaching Holkham Beach from the Burnham Overy Staithe coast path. That moment you climb the last sand dune and the sea opens up before you… This month we help you to discover new places and things to do in North Norfolk with our 24-page pull-out supplement, written by our North Norfolk editor and her team – if Amanda doesn’t know it, then probably no-one does, as she is born and bred in the Burnhams and her father and brothers are all fishermen there.

UPDATES
Fitness Boot Camp moves to Stamford Welland Academy F
OUNDED back in June 2010, Stamford Boot Camp has become a local icon for health and fitness fanatics, characterised by its reputation for unparalleled variety, and its sense of community and a spirit of fun. It really is a most unique health and fitness experience! Seven years ago - on a sunny Saturday morning - just eight people attended their inaugural session. But it wasn’t long before the demand grew for more classes and in April 2012 Stamford Boot Camp moved into Castle House to expand its class timetable. Proprietor Rob Dulieu says, “The Castle House venue served its purpose well, but the time is now right to take Stamford Boot Camp to a different level. I have been searching for a new base for a number of years and recently an opportunity presented to work with Stamford Welland Academy (SWA) on Green Lane. SWA have a range of facilities that lend themselves well to fitness classes and we will be making full use of them. I am really excited about the prospect of working with the Academy, who have made a genuine commitment to help their pupils improve their health and wellbeing. The beauty of this association is that it will allow me to work closely with them to further that aim, while also offering classes to their staff and the pupils’ parents. This is a very exciting phase in the development of my Boot Camp which continues to grow from strength to strength.” • To check out Rob’s class timetable go to www. stamfordbootcamp.co.uk or call him on 07846 457959 for further details.

Katie Cardew Illustrations wins a nationwide award! H
UGE excitement at Katie Cardew Illustrations as the business has just won a nationwide award! Katie was shortlisted for the Digital Star award at the Small Awards back in March this year, and having gone through a judging panel, she was picked as this year’s Digital Star! The Digital Star award, sponsored by Indeed, recognises small businesses that operate only through digital channels and do not have their own physical shop. Katie was chosen for her strong use of digital channels to engage with customers, including Instagram, Facebook, her blog & website, as well as for her innovation in web design & functionality and the growth of her audience over time. All this in the same fortnight that Katie launched her brand-new London & World Collections at London’s Earls Court to a fantastic reception from commercial retailers. The new London collection features some of Katie’s favourite London buildings, including St Paul’s Cathedral, Buckingham Palace, Liberty London, and many more, as well as the extremely popular London map, available in A3, A2 and even A1 size. The brand-new World collection features iconic buildings from around the globe, including the Taj Mahal, the Eiffel Tower, the Blue Mosque and more, not forgetting the gorgeous world map. Both collections also feature the illustrations on cards & notebooks, which make a lovely gift. Katie’s new London and World maps have been flying off the shelves of the studio, so it’s been a very busy and exciting time for the business! • www.kcillustrations.co.uk

DESIGN INTERIORS
The Old Dairy, Burghley Park Nestled in the heart of the Burghley Estate, with unsurpassed views of Burghley House, sits the Dairy. Brownlow Cecil, the 2nd Marquess of Exeter, had a passion for Jersey milking cows. His ambitious renovations to the Burghley Estate included the creation of a model dairy farm. The livestock tradition continued at Burghley until the dairy herd became unsustainable in the mid-20th Century, and the Dairy fell into disrepair. In 2016, the Burghley House Preservation Trust launched an ambitious project to give this spectacular 19th Century building a new lease of life. Since then, it has undergone an incredible transformation. Rannveig Stone
‘Over the course of 15 months, the Dairy has been lovingly developed into a unique and luxurious holiday house for up to 20 people.’ David Pennell, Estates Director, Burghley Estate Q. What was the aim of the restoration? The Dairy embodies a huge amount of the Estate’s history, so we wanted to keep that alive in the conversion and restoration of the building. It was vital that the Architects, Interior Designers and Building Contractors working on the Dairy shared our vision and we were very fortunate to draw together a fantastic team, namely: • Architects – Simon Harris of Harris McCormack Architects • Interior Designer – Thomas Hamel • Building Contractors – Orchard Builders Q. What was the most successful aspect of the project? I’m really pleased with the way the old has been seamlessly combined with the new. Having used stateof-the-art equipment (boiler taps, dishwashers and cappuccino machines) to brew a cuppa in the modern, well-appointed kitchens, guests can luxuriate in the comfort of the spacious seating area, admiring the historic architecture and stunning views of the parkland. We were determined to preserve as many existing features as possible, such as the beautiful exposed brickwork. Where items couldn’t be used to fulfil their original function, we repurposed them as imaginatively as possible.
14
STAMFORD LIVING JULY 2017
Quirky reincarnations of original dairy fittings: • Cast iron drinkers from each cow stall now act as cloakroom basins • Huge feed troughs have been repurposed as handy storage benches in the boot rooms • Cattle stall bricks, complete with drainage gulleys, now form attractive pathways to the Dairy and around the garden • Much of the old wood from the cattle stores has been used for panelling • Original doors from the stalls are used throughout the Dairy, both practically (to conceal the scullery kitchen) and decoratively • Old cattle stalls (complete with cast iron railings) have even been upcycled into some very interesting headboards!
Q. How did you approach the design of the Dairy’s interior? In order to achieve absolute luxury and comfort, we worked with top international interior designer, Thomas Hamel. Thomas’ design team researched the history of Burghley House to create accommodation which closely reflects the rich heritage of The Estate. To complement the thoughtful repurposing of various elements of the Old Dairy, we commissioned local artisan, Claire Langley Antiques of Harringworth, to restore and reupholster carefully selected pieces of furniture from Burghley House. Blanchard Interiors assisted in sourcing a range of items for the Dairy. Items were sourced from a wide range of companies namely, The Dining Chair Company, Ecco Trading, Arcadia Antiques, Loaf, Oka, Cox & Cox, John Lewis, Sofa & Chair Company, Pottery Barn, Robert Langford, Heathfield, Chelsea Textiles, Neptune and Graham & Green were the leading few. We also sourced many items locally, such as the range of china ware by Sophie Allport. Having been forced to fell one of the magnificent oak trees planted by Capability Brown over 250 years ago, we’ve ensured it
lives on by having it crafted into two enormous oak dining tables by Mark Atton, a master joiner based in Market Overton. The Capability Brown Oak tables are perfect for big family dinners, board game marathons and lazy Sunday breakfasts. Pictures of some of Exeter’s beloved cattle hang on the walls, along with landscape images of Burghley Park throughout the centuries. An enthusiastic breeder of native shorthorn cattle, Exeter took great pride in Telemachus, his champion bull. Guests exploring the Dairy’s many nooks and crannies will discover an assortment of unusual items relating to this passion, including the trunk which stored all the trophies and rosettes from Telemachus’ prizewinning days. Q. What might you do differently? If I knew at the outset of the project what I know now, I would definitely have got the lighting engineers involved much earlier on in the process. Lighting plays a crucial part in creating the ambience that guests enjoy and showing off the various features we’ve so painstakingly preserved.
Q. Why have a break at the Dairy? The Dairy offers great flexibility, as it can be taken either as one large residence for up to 20 people, or separated into two houses which both sleep ten. It’s ideal for groups of friends, family reunions and all manner of celebrations. The Dairy’s spectacular dining and living spaces are perfect for parties or for more intimate gatherings, where enjoying the open fires and wonderful views are the order of the day. Guests will really feel part of Estate life; they might look out of the window to see a very characterful herd of sheep going about their business; or sit in the garden, enjoying front row seats at the famous Horse Trials. Those preferring seclusion will not be disappointed. With high-speed broadband, widescreen TVs, walk-in power showers and huge bath tubs in each en-suite bathroom, guests can be assured of a comfortable and relaxing stay. There’s even space for (well-behaved) dogs and an enclosed garden. • To book your luxury getaway at The Dairy visit www.ruralretreats.co.uk

THROUGH THE KEYHOLE
The drawing room wall colour was matched to a shade the couple fell in love with during a trip to New England. Helen brought home a colour chart and had the shade matched locally.
STEP INSIDE…
The Priory at Wymondham The Priory at Wymondham is a superb example of a Grade II listed country property which has been carefully updated to provide the perfect family home. Amander Meade takes a look around.
T
HE interior of Simon and Helen Selkin’s home perfectly reflects their attitude and interests; each room is warm, welcoming and infused with personality. Simon’s father was a lifelong collector of art and antiques and his enthusiasm has been passed on to Simon who has been acquiring objets d’art and paintings since his early 20s. “I have travelled a lot on business both here and abroad and can never resist stopping en route wherever I am for a rummage through the local antiques shops and galleries,” he explains. “I never buy for investment, only ever what I personally enjoy and that would be my tip to anyone buying art within any budget.” The evidence of Simon’s interest abounds throughout the couple’s home where they have lived together since their wedding in April 2005. The couple’s children, Charlie (10) and Katie (8) complete the household. When the Selkins moved in, the house was in good structural order but they set about putting their own stamp on the décor with Helen taking on the lion’s share of design planning. “With a young family, we knew we needed a larger living kitchen so Palmers of Oakham were commissioned to build an extension
18
STAMFORD LIVING JULY 2017
which we are really pleased with – it has been really sympathetically blended into the existing building and looks as if it has always been here.” The couple spent considerable time and trouble designing the arrangement of the new kitchen which had to be both practical and serviceable. Helen planned out the space carefully using cardboard templates until she was happy with the layout. “Grantham Kitchens made bespoke units for us. We wanted a contemporary feel but nothing too high gloss that would look out of place in a house of this age and I think we struck exactly the right balance,” she comments. Simon says that the drawing room is probably his favourite room in the house and spends a lot of time in there enjoying playing the piano and encouraging his children to play too. “It’s a lovely room and we have so many very happy memories in here – I remember friends and family gathering to meet Charlie for the first time when we brought him home. There are plenty of good memories of the dining room too as we like to entertain. This room has seen some great dinner parties around the table which we had made specially to fit the space and which was an engagement gift from my father.”
On the first of two upper storeys, the couple have used a statement floral wall paper in the master suite and resisted the temptation to fill the room with too much furniture. “We prefer to keep things simple and let one statement piece or design feature speak for itself,” says Simon. Similarly, the bathrooms have been fitted with classic white fixtures and plenty of storage to keep clutter at bay. The Priory stands in extensive grounds of over an acre which have been immaculately tended by the couple who have established a policy of easy maintenance to suit their busy lifestyle. “We don’t have the time for elaborate gardening but the potential is there for the next occupant to do lots more with the grounds if they wish. This house has been a fantastic family home and has the flexibility we needed without being overwhelming in size. Our next move is based around our children’s schooling but we have been extremely happy here and will continue to treasure all the special memories of our first family home.” • The Priory is currently being marketed for sale through Moores Estate Agency. Clockwise from top left: The exterior. Grounds to the rear. The Dining Room: Light pours into this sociable space via the original mullioned windows. The extending dining table easily seats 14 and was made to fit the space. En Suite bathroom: Space under the eaves has been cleverly used for storage in here. Master Bedroom: A bold floral print has been used to great effect in here. The children’s rooms have plenty of space for playing and sleepovers. Snug: A wood burning stove makes this room a family favourite in the cooler months. Recessed alcove shelving provides the perfect showcase for family photos and trinkets. Kitchen: The extension doubled the size of the kitchen which now has generous proportions and an open plan design. Bespoke units were crafted by Grantham Kitchens. STAMFORD LIVING JULY 2017

HEALTH & BEAUTY
Lashes and Brows

Genevieve Potter pays a visit to Natalie Dams’ new St Paul’s Street premises and discovers how to achieve immaculate lashes and brows.
N
ATALIE Dams and her team re-located earlier this summer and the move to airy new premises (tucked beside Peter’s Cleaners) marks an exciting new chapter for Natalie, who started her career in the beauty business almost a decade ago. There’s lots of open space and a fresh and contemporary feel, with more room for the team and their clients. There are two smart Jessica nail stations and a luxurious treatment room for treatments such as LVL lashes (a pre-holiday essential to replace mascara for hot summer days). But it’s brows that Natalie and her team have become notorious for in Stamford, and having built up a team with three HD Brow master stylists, they truly understand the power of a perfect arch. As Natalie puts it: “Good brows are the most cost-effective way to give the whole face a
lift. Lots of women don’t get the shape of their brows right when doing them at home, but we can create a natural, beautifully defined shape that is much more flattering.” “We’re very happy to be in our new, roomier location and look forward to welcoming our loyal customers, as well as some new faces, over the summer.” STAMFORD LIVING READER OFFER – HD brows with Abbie for £20 and LVL lashes with April for £40 during July 2017, subject to availability. A patch test is required for both treatments – please mention Stamford Living at the time of booking. • Natalie Dams Beauty, 13a St Paul’s Street, Stamford, PE9 2BE 01780 238639 www.nataliedamsbeauty.com
Stamford’s ultimate brow and lash directory Equilibrium
Equilibrium recently introduced microblading to the salon and are seeing some spectacular transformations. A pigment with an iron oxide base, precisely implanted to the correct depth, gives the appearance of beautiful, natural looking eyebrows. The semi-permanent qualities of the microblading pigment prevent it from fading into unnatural shades that are common with permanent cosmetics. The results of microblading last between one and three years. One very happy client commented: “I couldn’t be any happier with the result, I would recommend this treatment to anyone thinking about it. My new brows look amazing and I will definitely go back to Gwen at Equilibrium for microblading in the future, to keep them looking this good!” • Equilibrium, 7 St. Paul’s Street, Stamford, PE9 2BE 01780 757579 www.equilibriumstamford.co.uk

Stamford Living writer Kate Cadman enjoys some organic pampering at Clean Beauty Living
I
F you are lucky enough to spend an hour or two with Laura Thomson-Dunne at her newlyopened studio above The Loft Hair Boutique on St Paul’s Street, you are likely to leave feeling Kate Cadman refreshed, revived, pampered and incredibly indulged! I was lucky enough to try out an organic facial and make up session which left me glowing radiantly for the rest of the day. The award-winning Pinks Boutique range is certified organic by the Soil Association. “I like to offer holistic, non-toxic beauty treatments which make people feel confident about their appearance and the products they are using,” explains Laura. The luxury facial I received included 30 minutes of intensive, heavenly face, neck and foot massage – a wonderful bonus! Following my facial, I had an hour’s make up application. Throughout this session Laura took the time to talk to me about my skin, eye colour and explain what products she was using and why. She included her top three, tried and tested, favourite make up brands - RMS, Ilia and Well People. The result was a subtle make up finish with smoky eyes - perfect as I’d requested a fairly natural look with just a little bit of an eye thing going on. Oh, and just to add to the overall experience I got a cuddle with Jimmy Laura’s seven-year-old chihuahua who was beautifully well-behaved and unbelievably cute too! • To make an appointment email: hello@ ltdbeauty.co.uk or Tel: 01780 757781 or 07399 591343. The Pinks Boutique organic facial costs £50 and make up application £50 (a make up tutorial costs £65). HEALTH & BEAUTY UPDATES
Health services for women T
HE female body is quite phenomenal. Apart from the subtle differences between the male and female physiological make up, the female body undergoes some significant changes and stresses over the course of a lifetime. However, accompanying this miracle make-up that allows us to reproduce and continue the cycle of life, are a myriad of health concerns, complaints and complications that see most women needing to visit a GP or specialist at some point in their lives. There are many reasons for the increase in demand for female health services, from the improved profile of some conditions, better knowledge and education to external influences, (such as intentional delays to starting a family), that are seeing a rise in demand for infertility treatment. This is being seen and felt by health professionals around the world. We’ve also seen improvements in medicine which have resulted in an increase in demand for menopause treatment services, proving that the support for female health extends beyond those “baby-bearing” years. Hany Elmadbouh, lead consultant at private healthcare facility Avicenna Clinic in Peterborough comments, “I think that there is an increase in demand for health services generally. We’re living longer, have a better understanding of illnesses and conditions and are more open to getting help than we have been before. However, there are certain areas where I am seeing a marked increase in the number of patients; gynaecology and fertility in particular. “We are fortunate enough to have some of the country’s top consultants working at the clinic; Alka Prakash, one of the leading consultants in fertility, Aparna Gumma, whose expertise covers menstrual disorders and menopause, among many others, and Bruce Ramsay who is known in particular for his expertise with endometriosis. “Many of the conditions women come to see us for see them living in a great deal of discomfort day- to-day. Having access to a range of consultants, and the ability to be seen, diagnosed and have a treatment plan agreed all in one day has a huge impact on their lives; both physically and mentally.” There’s no doubt, the female body is a marvellous thing. And it’s reassuring to see that the increase in demand, and indeed support, for female health services is so apparent. • Want to find out more about Avicenna Clinic and the range of services on offer? UPDATES Stay hydrated this summer says local home care provider O
LDER people, their families, friends and neighbours across Stamford, Rutland, Oundle and Peterborough area are encouraged to think about staying hydrated this summer. Individuals have a moral duty to support vulnerable people who may be at risk, in any way they can, leading home care provider Bluebird Care Peterborough & Rutland has urged. As the weather starts to get warmer and the sun starts to come out, Bluebird Care Peterborough & Rutland is sending out the strong message that heat and sun exposure is extremely serious and potentially life threatening – and is urging people in the area to stay hydrated and prepare for the hotter days with some simple tips to stay safe in the sun. Bluebird Care Peterborough & Rutland are running a “Stay Hydrated this Summer” campaign to spread the word about the dangers of heat and share simple tips that save lives in hot weather. Due to the soaring temperatures in July 2016 there were 1,661 deaths recorded in England & Wales, compared with a five-year average of 1,267 (ONS, 2016). This highlights the danger of high temperatures and the importance of being prepared. Staying hydrated is essential, particularly for those in high risk groups, such as babies, children and older people. Government recommendations suggest everyone should have around 6-8 glasses a day, which can be water or sugar free drinks (NHS Eatwell Guide, 2016). As part of this they will be sharing top tips across our website and social media and Facebook page, sharing links to national resources to help ensure everyone is prepared for the hotter weather.
With the frequent and sudden changes in British weather Bluebird Care Peterborough & Rutland want to issue a reminder for people to get prepared for the hotter weather. Tips from the NHS include: • Keep your home cool by closing your blinds and curtains • Avoid extreme heat where possible • Stay hydrated with water, avoiding alcohol, caffeine and sugary drinks • Stay alert by keeping up to date with weather forecasts • Check on relatives and neighbours who may be most at risk • If you need to go outside plan ahead, have plenty of food and water as well as sun protection (sun cream, sun hat and sunglasses) • Avoid outings in the middle of the day, 113pm is the hottest part of the day.
WATCH, EAT, ENJOY – Pizza Oven Demo Day with Stamford Stoves O
UTDOOR living is becoming increasingly popular and what better way to enhance that outdoor living lifestyle than with an ESSE Fire Stone Pizza Oven or a Vauni Globe fire pit. Both are being sold by local stove retailer Stamford Stoves who are based in Barnack, just outside Stamford. Stamford Stoves specialises in a range of contemporary and traditional styled wood burners, multi-fuel stoves, outdoor fire pits and the latest addition to the range; the ESSE Fire Stone Pizza Oven which can cook a pizza in approximately two minutes. Tried and tested by Michelin starred professionals, the Fire Stone is British made and can be bought on its own pedestal with the body of the oven rotating 360® which means it can be turned away from the wind. As well as making homemade pizzas, the Fire Stone can also roast, braise, chargrill, and bake so it is not just pizzas that can be cooked in this fabulously designed outdoor oven. It comes with a range of accessories, some of which are included and others which can be purchased separately. WATCH EAT ENJOY – Stamford Stoves are holding a pizza oven demo day on Saturday 15th July at their showroom in Barnack between 12pm and 4pm. Along with The Giddy Aunt for sampling Prosecco and gins and The Green Dragon, Ryhall inc. Stoney Ford Brew Company who are providing other refreshments, there will be a garden style setting where everyone is welcome to come along and see this marvellous oven design working and making pizza for you on the day. • Email us on info@stamfordstoves.co.uk for further information.

Commenting, Nadine Wilmer, Care Manager of Bluebird Care Peterborough & Rutland said: “Staying hydrated in the summer months is vital as the sun can often catch us off guard, giving little time to take precautions against the heat. It’s important to start planning for the hotter weather now by taking simple precautions like making sure you are aware of the weather forecast, finding an hour to keep cool, speaking to your neighbours about coping with extreme heat and make sure you are drinking enough fluids. “We’re reaching out to the local community to ask anyone at risk to keep in regular contact with friends and neighbours. If you have an elderly relative or neighbour, please check them in hot spells to make sure they’re coping.” Nadine adds, “If anyone would like further hot weather advice or information about summer homecare, please call us on 01780 480881. We’ll be delighted to help. Let’s look after one another this summer.” • www.bluebirdcdare.co.uk/peterboroughrutland

355,880 people use Stamford train station a year… This month, our local property investment advisor David Crooke, owner of UPP Property Agents, looks at the impact Stamford train station has on property prices
A
S an estate agent in Stamford, I am regularly asked where the best parts to buy are, and which of the surrounding villages are best to live in - chiefly from newcomers to the area. Now the answer is always different; a lot depends on the demographics of their family, their age, schooling requirements and interests. Nonetheless, one of the principal necessities for most tenants and buyers is ease of access to transport links, including public transport, of which, the railways are very important. Official figures recently released state that, in total, 489 people jump on a train daily from Stamford train station. Of those, 154 are season ticket holders. That’s a lot of money when a standard class season ticket to London is £4,276pa. So, if up to £658,550 is being spent on rail season tickets each year from Stamford, those commuters must have some impressive jobs and incomes to allow them to afford that season ticket in the first place. Demand for middle to upper market properties remains strong in Stamford and the surrounding area and so, in turn, these are the type of people whom are happy to invest in the buy-to-let market – providing homes for many residents. Property values in Stamford would be at least 3% - 4% lower, if it wasn’t for the proximity of the railway station As the costs associated with car travel continue to rise and the already congested roads worsen, rail travel is becoming increasingly
MUSH Sarah Richey became a keen advocate of MUSH – a new, free way for mums to meet local mums with kids the same age - when she moved to Stamford
M
OVING to a new area with young children can be daunting, especially when you don’t know others in the same boat with time to spare during the day. It’s easy to quickly feel isolated and this was exactly the situation I faced when we moved temporarily to Stamford in April whilst we undertook what seemed like a never-ending building project at our home. Whilst I was fortunate to have a good network of mum friends in my home town of Cambridge, I soon discovered that without them, the days could appear dishearteningly long. Finding a simple way to meet other mums with similar age children became vitally important and fortunately the MUSH app ended up being a complete lifeline; allowing me to connect with lots of lovely mums and find out exactly what activities were available for babies and toddlers locally. I am now working with the founders

important, and this has resulted in a huge surge in rail travel demand. Overall, usage of Stamford train station has increased over the last 20 years. In 1997, a total of 186,863 people went through the barriers or connected with another train at the station in that 12-month period. However, in 2016, that figure had risen to 355,880 people using the station (that’s 978 people a day). The juxtaposition of the property and the train station has an important effect on the value and saleability of a Stamford property. It is also significant for tenants, so for an investor, the distance to and from the railway station can be extremely significant. One of the first things house buyers and tenants do when surfing the web for somewhere to live is find out the proximity of a property to the train station. That is why Rightmove displays the distance to the railway station alongside every property on their website. • For more advice on the local property market, visit: www.stamfordpropertyblog.com
of MUSH to promote the app across the Stamford and Oakham area. MUSH’s mission is to make the lives of mums more fun and less lonely by connecting with other local, like-minded mothers with kids of similar ages. Pregnant mums-to-be can connect with others who are due the same time as them. Research shows that 80% of mums experience loneliness, 50% find it hard to make local mum friends, 60% go a full day without adult interaction and 82% think having mum friends make you a happier more positive mother. Mums can create a profile, write a short bio and give details of their children’s ages (or their due date) and then connect with others. They can also share what’s going on locally, ask for advice as well as organise meet-ups via the app - I have already organised the first MUSH mums’ coffee morning in the Cosy Club in Stamford. There’s been plenty of local interest and I’m delighted to have increased the number of sign-ups up in the area by 20% in less than 3 weeks. MUSH is also useful for mums who don’t have many friends with children, missed opportunities to do antenatal classes or simply want to increase their circle of mum friends. • Mums can download MUSH from the Google play or App store by searching for MUSH. It takes 5 minutes to sign up and start browsing for mums nearby. www.letsmush.com

OUT & ABOUT
The Secret Garden In the bustling town centre behind St John’s Church lies a haven of wildlife, plants and calm which is open to the public each summer. Fiona Cumberpatch paid a visit
Y
OU’VE probably walked past St John’s Church hundreds of times without realising that behind its elegant façade is a tiny wild garden. Formerly the graveyard of St John’s parish, it dates back to the 12th century, but has been closed to burials since the 1850s when the town cemetery opened. Now a small group of volunteers maintain the space and open it as a place of sanctuary every Friday and Saturday from June to September. Visitors are free to come in and sit peacefully, reflecting and enjoying the birdsong, the hum of insects and plethora of plants. The area is part of a nationwide Quiet Garden Movement (www.quietgarden.org) which provides a safe, quiet space for spiritual contemplation, regardless of a person’s faith. At this time of year, sage and mint intermingle with wild grasses. Honeysuckle scrambles across stone walls, and bees buzz in and out of the flowers. The churchyard falls into two halves: the western side is dominated by trees including yew and holly, while the other side is mainly grass, where wildflowers flourish. “We have three main aims,” says honorary curate, the Reverend David Bond. “To create a nature reserve, to have a place where people can come and sit and be quiet, and to introduce more people to the benefits of plants and nature.” An informal programme has been developed, such as Prayer in the Garden, which takes place on Fridays from 12.15 to 12.45. The first Wednesday of each month from 6.30pm onwards sees Poetry in the Garden when people talk about a verse that they enjoy. A writing group meets here regularly, and the area is maintained and managed by a group of volunteers known as The Friends of St John’s Churchyard Garden. Their aim is to encourage wildlife and plants. “This may mean that the garden looks a little more untidy than you might expect, but this is

deliberate,” explains David. Long, unmown grass gives shelter and allows more flowers to grow. Piles of wood and cuttings encourage beneficial insects, while bird and bug boxes are placed for extra breeding habitats. Volunteer Erica Burt is responsible for the mosaics which are sited throughout the garden. These include a ‘finger labrynth’ which helps people to make a journey in their mind while tracing it with their finger, allowing them to slow down and pause in the moment. She and other helpers are also introducing plants with biblical associations, such as pomegranate, myrtle, olive, St John’s Wort and Balm of Giliad. “I have learnt so much about plants and insects since I started volunteering,” she says. “I love to see sights such as the tiny scarlet cinnabar moth which feeds on the ragwort which grows here.” The garden is entered via the Church, and it is free to all comers. All that is asked is that the area is respected as a burial ground and a place where birds, plants and animals can thrive in peace. • The garden is open on Fridays and Saturdays, 11am – 3.30pm, from June to September. If you would like to volunteer, or to visit the garden when it is not officially open, contact the Rev. David Bond on 01832 226255 or email david@dbond.me.uk

OUTDOOR LIVING
Make the most of your garden this season WORDS: FIONA CUMBERPATCH
Sound proof your garden According to a recent survey, the most irritating unwanted sounds in the garden are loud music, barking dogs, traffic noise and noisy neighbours. Given that housing density is increasing, and the trend is likely to continue, is there anything you can do to solve the problem? It is possible to use fencing and planting to help cut down on intrusive noise, and although you cannot eradicate it completely, it may help you to relax and enjoy your outside space. New this year is a Decibel Noise Reduction fencing panel, which is attractive as well as functional. Made by Forest Garden and available from Wickes (1 Cockerell Road, Corby), the fence reduces noise by 30 decibels. Of course, any fence panel will reduce noise to an extent, but this one has been made with no gaps in the lap panels (noise can travel even through small spaces) and tests have shown it to be six times more effective than a conventional panel. At £119.99 per 180cm wide
panel, it might be an investment worth making if rowdy neighbours or a busy road are a constant problem. Alternatively, you can use plants to help absorb and diffuse sound via their leaves, twigs and branches. Dense planting is thought to reduce noise by up to six decibels. Evergreen shrubs are an obvious choice because they offer year-round protection, but a hornbeam hedge is also worth considering as it does not shed its leaves in the winter. Plants such as hollies and junipers that have thick branches at ground level may help to muffle excessive noise. Alternatively, a fast grower such as bamboo makes an attractive living screen. You can also make a visual statement by choosing a dramatic species, such as black bamboo. It is widely available at local garden centres. If you need an instant solution, choose mature plants to provide immediate height and cover. As well as noise absorption, bamboo has the added advantage of creating soothing sounds as it sways and rustles in the breeze.
My pots and containers are finally brimming with loveliness after a slow and cold start (and a few disasters when late frosts took all my young nasturtiums!). I like to display my containers on an old stepladder so I can see them better and create some height on my patio. I found a ladder at a car boot sale last season and I gave it a lick of paint to bring it back to life. You can also source them at St Martin’s Antique Centre in Stamford. I am really enjoying a combination of Verbena ‘Aztec Blue Velvet’ and some ruby red calibrachoa, which make striking partners in the same pot. Both of these bedding plants, or similar ones, are on sale at Stamford Garden Centre, Helpston Garden Centre and at Stamford Market.
OUTSIDE INSPIRATION Bright Ideas to Borrow What better way to gain inspiration than visiting nearby villages and towns to see how gifted gardeners have transformed their plots, using plants that thrive in local conditions? The National Garden Scheme, celebrating its 90th anniversary this year, is the best way to view (and you benefit charity at the same time). Try the Gosberton Group Garden opening on July 2 or the Blatherwyke Estate’s stunning 4 acre walled garden on July 23. Quick Make Do you sometimes forget which seeds you have planted where, or need reminding of the name of particular herbs? Plant labels can be attractive as well as useful. This month, I’ve customised some high street tags with paint and cheerful colours. Plain wooden stakes, such as lolly sticks, can be transformed with blackboard paint from Wilko. I used a white indelible Posca pen (available from Colemans in High Street, Stamford) to write the plant name. Copper tags are £1.50 for ten from Asda, while the pink labels were purchased in plain wood from Flying Tiger in Queensgate, Peterborough and given a pop of colourful acrylic paint, lightly varnished and then labelled.

Resolving conflict – the mediator’s way M
OST people would agree that being in sustained conflict can be exhausting. Most strive for a harmonious life, free from the stresses and complexities that life invariably throws our way. When a marriage or partnership breaks down, however, often everything can become overwhelming. It is normal to feel angry, upset and frightened for the future. So, what is mediation? Mediation offers a forum for parties to have a discussion and endeavour, with the help of the mediator, to come to a resolution. It is important that parties are aware of some fundamental principles of the mediation process which are: • Confidentiality - mediation is a confidential discussion that cannot be repeated in Court. What this enables the parties to do is have an open discussion about the issues that are important to them without feeling that anything may be repeated to a Judge if their case ends up going to Court. The parties can, of course, tell their solicitors what is said in mediation. • Voluntary - mediation is an entirely voluntary process. There is somewhat a misconception that parties have to attend mediation. How does it work and is it for me? Mediation can take many forms and should be tailored to what the parties want, after all it is their process. Normally parties are initially seen separately and thereafter a number of joint sessions follow. The number of sessions, again, depends on each individual case. Mediation is not for everyone and there may be many reasons why someone might
not feel comfortable in a mediation setting. They may feel that they will not be listened to, intimidated by the other party, afraid to speak freely and say what it is they want to say. They may think that the other party will not make full and frank disclosure of their financial details and therefore the process will be a waste of time. These are normal concerns. The important issue is to remember that mediation is about having a discussion and to try and warn off the polarisation and hostility that can quite easily take over when parties embark on the separation road. Reaching agreement If the parties reach an agreement in mediation, at the end of the process a Memorandum of Understanding is drafted by the mediator. This is not a legally binding document. It simply sets out for the parties and their respective solicitors what has been agreed. That agreement has to then be put into a Consent Order (for a financial agreement) for the Court to approve. The parties can change their minds after the mediation process and before a final Order is approved by the Court. It is commonly accepted that a solution reached by separating parties through negotiation and discussion rather than one imposed by the Court process is more likely to leave the parties to a divorce

or separation less bruised and battered by the process. Most people do not seek conflict. Conflicts are frequently fuelled by miscommunication and misunderstandings. UPDATES For the love of our pets Wayne Smith of Alder Vets in Uffington Rd, Stamford reflects upon our closeness to pets
T
HE human animal bond has probably always been present, initially for hunting, transport and guarding. In modern times animals have effectively become family members, with mutual close relationships. In America, surveys suggest that between 60 and 80 percent of dogs sleep on or in the owner’s bed. It is known that owning pets has great health benefits, reducing blood pressure, cholesterol and stress. Riding horses gives improvements to people with neurological damage and people with handicaps. We have guide dogs, hearing dogs, riding for the disabled, and pat dogs. We have much loved cats, dogs, rabbits, hamsters, reptiles and birds. They live in our homes and are generally constant in their affections to us. There are numerous stories of animals saving their owners. Dogs and cats warning their owners about carbon monoxide or fire. Dogs rescuing people who are drowning. Dogs detecting malignant skin and lung cancers. Horses moving their owners away from danger. This relationship works both ways of course. Our love for our pets is greatly beneficial to them as well. We improve their health both by our physical care for them and the emotional care we give them. Studies have shown that animals recovering from painful surgery feel less pain when their owners are present as well as being less stressed. There have also been many cases of humans risking and sometimes losing their lives trying to save their pets. It is not surprising then that when our pet dies we suffer a level of grief similar to losing a close family member. I have witnessed this grief many times. I have had people collapse onto the ground into a foetal position their grief has been so great. I still remember what I felt when I was a young boy and Whisky, my Poodle had to be put to sleep after breaking his back in a road traffic accident and the grief my son felt when his cat was run over. It is very important then that we as vets understand this bond. We need to help our pets recover from illness and surgery by allowing owners to visit. We need to let owners be present when sedated prior to surgery. We need to be aware that we are responsible for an animal that is an important part of somebody’s family. • www.alder-vets.co.uk
Family Law: Can I obtain a ‘no fault divorce’? T
HERE can be many reasons for a marriage to breakdown, however not every marriage breakdown is acrimonious and some couples decide mutually to get divorced without attributing the responsibility for the breakdown to either party. Placing blame on one party as the cause of the marital breakdown can make deciding to get a divorce particularly difficult. At present, it is not possible to obtain
a ‘no fault divorce’ within the UK. There is only one legal ground for divorce “the marriage has broken down irretrievably.” A person can petition for a divorce after one year of marriage and the facts they can rely upon are “Adultery” or allegations of “unreasonable behaviour” against a spouse. The alternative is waiting between 2 or 5 years before being able to issue for a divorce based upon separation for the same length of time. The recent case of Owens -v- Owens highlights the need for a ‘no fault divorce’. In this case the court dismissed the wife’s petition, which was based upon allegations of unreasonable behaviour against her husband. Her allegations of unreasonable behaviour were described as “exaggerated”

and “of a kind to be expected in a marriage.” This case has now been referred to the Court of Appeal. This case demonstrates the need to change our family legal system and establish a divorce that allows for no blame to be attributed to either party. If a marriage has broken down many couples feel they should be allowed to end the marriage without having to make allegations against a spouse or wait 2 or 5 years respectively. There is a growing support in the UK for a ‘no fault divorce’. • If you have been affected by any of these issues or require further advice then please contact Pavinder Khela an experienced family solicitor at Hegarty Solicitors based in Stamford on 01780 752066 or email Pavinder.Khela@hegarty.co.uk. BURGHLEY DIRTY WEEKEND Deborah Pennell talks to the Founder of this popular outdoor event, and meets a competitor who dishes the dirt
PROFILE OF A HALF MUCKER – 13 MILES, 150 OBSTACLES
JIM MEE, FOUNDER/MANAGING DIRECTOR OF RAT RACE ADVENTURE SPORTS
LOCAL RUNNER, DAN BLACK, A 42-YEAROLD CO-FOUNDER AND LEAD DESIGNER OF INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS BLACK + BLUM.
When did you set up Rat Race and what did you do before? I set up Rat Race in 2004, having previously worked for Red Bull in Events and Marketing. Who comes up with the ideas for all the obstacles? Mostly me, although we have an annual winter brainstorm with the full staff, where people pitch in ideas. We then go away and look at the feasibility of the new obstacles and rule them in or out. Have you ever taken part in a Rat Race event? Yes many, but I have never run Dirty Weekend – I am always too busy behind the scenes. My proudest personal Rat Race achievement was completing ‘The Wall’ Ultra Marathon, a 69-mile run along Hadrian’s Wall. I came second to last! But that’s what Rat Race is all about – taking part and giving it a try. How many similar events do you organise each year? Seventeen events in the UK, and a clutch of International events too. What tips would you give to potential competitors when preparing to run the Burghley Dirty Weekend? Get the training miles in, pre-event. The Full Mucker course is 20 miles long, with 300
strength-sapping obstacles. Get a solid half marathon under your belt. Dress for the weather, and importantly don’t miss the After Party! What is special about the Burghley Dirty Weekend? For me: No event anywhere on the planet has more obstacles over a single-lap distance; we appear to be the biggest assault course on Earth. For the competitors: being able to camp so close to Burghley House, run in the beautiful park, and be part of an incredible After-party. Do people from other countries enter the race? We regularly have competitors from the USA, Canada, Australia and some from Malaysia, Singapore and other Far Eastern countries. We always have coach loads of Dutch and Belgians taking part. Can you give me a random statistic or two relating to the running of the Dirty weekend....? • 33,000 litres of water were consumed at the water stations out on the course • Nearly 10,000 pints of beer were served at the After party! • Around 25,000 scaffolding poles are used across the course • Around 50,000 zip ties • We set up a radio comms net that covers the entire 20-mile course • The staff at Screwfix in Stamford know me by name!
What made you sign up in the first place? I did it last year and really enjoyed it, plus I needed a challenge to fight the Christmas bulge. How did you prepare? Running twice a week with my dogs and gradually building the distance up. I definitely didn’t do enough aerobic work, and paid for it on the day. What were your thoughts at the start? Why am I doing this? I never learn! What were your thoughts halfway round? It’s going better than I’d hoped, but then some cramp kicked in, just after getting out of the cold lake. From your experience, what was the worst obstacle on the course? The underground tunnel - it is too small to even go on your hands and knees, so you really do just have to slide the whole way, and it’s pitch black! Which is the most exhilarating obstacle? I loved the high-water jump. When you get to the top, it is a massive drop into a deep pool, but there is no time to turn back. The music is blaring… a count of 1,2,3 jump and you’ve done it. Great fun! What are your thoughts at the finish? I need a pint, the relief of finishing, and exhaustion probably in that order! What part of your body hurt most the next day? I had weird bruises on my arms where I’d been pulling myself over walls. Would you consider doing it again? Yes, but I haven’t signed up yet. Any top tips for potential competitors? Don’t just rely on running. Do a lot of aerobic exercise and stretching. How would you describe the experience as a whole? Awesome, awesome fun! I really couldn’t recommend it enough. There is such a great atmosphere at the event. Roll on 2018!

PETS
Holiday essentials Preparing to go away on holiday can get a little stressful sometimes, particularly if you’ve not made adequate provision for your pet care whilst you are going to be away. Kate Cadman lists some reminders to make the transition a little smoother for your pet from home to holiday carer.
1
Make sure all jabs are up-to-date. Most catteries and kennels won’t take animals that are not fully upto-date with all their vaccinations. Do remember to take your pet’s food along to the holiday carer. Pets can become quite poorly if they suddenly have an entirely new palette of food. Always ensure flea and worming treatments are upto-date, particularly when staying in holiday cottages. Don’t let your pets drink salty water, it will make them sick. If you do take pets away with you, it is wise to check out the contact number for the local veterinary surgery just in case you have an emergency. When looking for a suitable cattery/kennel/carer for your pet, make sure you have a list of questions at the ready and be clear about what you are looking for. If your pet has quirks for example: attachment issues or behavioural problems with other animals, make sure you take the time to fully brief your pet carer so they can make the necessary arrangements to help settle your pet in for its stay. Make sure your pet care costs are all clearly stated prior to leaving the animal, you don’t want to come back to a whole heap of extra costs that you weren’t expecting. Always go on recommendations - it’s the best way to comfort any worries you may have about leaving your pet. Finally, don’t forget to enjoy yourself! Holidays are for relaxing and rejuvenating. Worrying about your pet whilst you are away will not be beneficial to anyone. A refreshed owner will be of much more use to their pet!

Staying safe outdoors
7
If you’re not jetting off somewhere, but plan to spend more time outdoors (with your pets), then you should be alert to some of the common threats to pets during the summer months.
8 9
10
• When you are out and about with your dog, make sure you keep them on a lead. A fight with another animal can result in cuts, lacerations or severe punctures which can become infected if left untreated. • Flies are far more prevalent during the warmer seasons - an injury, however small, can be a perfect place for flies to lay eggs. Keeping your pet clean and treating any skin injuries is crucial in avoiding maggot infestations. • Antifreeze can be another outdoor threat. Many people change their antifreeze/water mixture at this time of the year and dispose of it poorly. Unfortunately, it tastes sweet to pets but it is highly toxic. • Watch out for pets that have access to bins or compost as the summer heat speeds up decay and decomposition. Pets can ingest moulds that can cause significant nervous system abnormalities including tremors or seizures.
• Don’t be tempted to give your pet any picnic or barbecue leftovers as this may cause vomiting and diarrhoea. Pets are not used to the high fat foods; mayonnaise and other dairy based items can be particularly bad and can cause food poisoning. • Look out for stagnant pools of water which, at certain times of the year, can form life-threatening algae (if ingested) along the edges. • Fishing can be a popular spring and summer activity. Be aware that the bait you use to catch fish is also tempting to your pet. Many dogs and cats have eaten bait – along with the hook and line. Your pet might also step on a hook, which will result in embedding of the hook in the skin.

AEDs
– an acronym that could just save your life!
Did you know that dotted around the streets of Stamford, and beyond, are many potentially life-saving pieces of equipment sitting, waiting, ready to spark into life when an emergency strikes. Kate Cadman went in search of some of the town’s Automatic External Defibrillators (AEDs).
T
HOUSANDS of people are dying Emergency first aid training with Advanced in situations where first aid Paramedic and Director intervention could have made all of ‘INFORM’ Clinical the difference. A recent statistic Skills Training Services released by St John’s Ambulance quotes Ltd, Sarah-Jane Turner. that 140,000 people die in the UK each year from incidents where first aid could possibly have saved their life. Every year approximately 900 people choke to death, 2,500 asphyxiate from a blocked airway and 29,000 die from having a heart attack and what’s really chilling is to find out that almost two-thirds of us don’t feel confident enough to even try and save a life. “Many people are frightened of doing something wrong,” says Anthea Westbrook, Osteopath and joint Owner of The Broad Street Surgery, Stamford. “Ten years ago defibrillators were very complex and what many people don’t understand is that nowadays, AEDs are fully automated, they assess the patient and only deliver a shock if one is needed. As a community we need regular first aid training sessions including how to use AEDs,” adds Anthea. The Broad Street Surgery has its own AED which is sited in the reception area (and therefore only accessible during clinic opening hours). However, there are many more AEDs situated around the town (see list) many of which are accessible 24/7. “Doing something in an emergency situation is obviously much better than doing nothing,” explains Advanced Paramedic and Director of ‘INFORM’ Clinical Skills Training Services Ltd, SarahJane Turner. “Cardiac arrests occur at the most unusual times and in the most unexpected places and that’s what catches people out. Don’t be afraid of getting involved in an emergency situation as you really can’t do anything wrong. If you break someone’s rib doing CPR on them, that’s okay, you are doing your best to keep them alive, and the AEDs will only ever shock a person if the machine detects a heart rhythm that will respond to this treatment.” Dr Nigel Hume has been working at Broad Street Practice for three years as a General Practitioner and arranged a first aid training session for all Practice staff, “I am keen to get clinical meetings organised on a regular basis and decided that the first one should be both a team building and information-giving exercise. I’ve seen defibrillators being used and bringing people back to life - it’s pretty mind-blowing. There are so many more AEDs in public places now and we should all be aware of them and how to use them in an emergency situation.” Outside a hospital setting, on average, less than 10% of victims survive a cardiac arrest. With defibrillation survival rates can go up to about 40%, and if suitable patients are shocked within two minutes the survival rate can be as good as 70%. WHAT TO DO IN AN EMERGENCY?
Your priorities are to: • assess the situation – do not put yourself in danger; • make the area safe; • assess all casualties and attend first to any unconscious casualties; • send for help – grab a defibrillator (if there’s one to hand). Check for a response: • Gently shake the casualty’s shoulders and ask loudly, ‘Are you all right?’ If no response: • shout for help and dial 999; • open the airway; • check for normal breathing and pulse; • If no signs of life start chest compressions until an AED arrives; • As soon as you have the AED put it on the chest Dr Nigel Hume practising and listen to its chest compressions. prompts. If you get the AED to the patient immediately, then put it straight on.
AEDs explained No training is required to use an AED as they are fully automated and talk you through the process step by step. An AED only administers a shock when a heart is in an irregular rhythm, the defibrillator will shock the heart to stop and restart it, hopefully back to a normal rhythm. If the heart has no rhythm CPR is required to try and get a rhythm back before an AED can be used. AEDs are lightweight, portable, battery operated devices that are simple to use. Sticky pads with sensors are attached to the chest of the patient. Electrodes send information about the heart and its rhythm to a computer inside the AED which analyses the rhythm to see if a shock is required. If a shock is needed the AED gives full voice prompts explaining when to give the shock and the electrodes deliver it. It WILL NOT shock unless the heart requires it.
Defibrillator facts • Each untreated minute of a sudden cardiac arrest leads to a 10% reduction in survival. • 95% of people who have a cardiac arrest die from it, most within minutes.

• Sudden cardiac arrest can be triggered by anything, including running, stress or a blow to the chest like being hit by a football/netball. • CPR alone gives a 5% chance of survival, early defibrillation raises that chance to over 50%. • Untrained people can use automated defibrillators. • Defibrillators cannot save everyone, they are that extra chance - the last chance. • Even children are at risk; it is thought 1 in every 500 children could have a thickening of the heart muscle (cardiomyopathy) which can lead to a sudden cardiac arrest especially during exercise.

GALLERY STAMFORD Positioned in the centre of town is the Gallery Stamford, a busy little shop just down from NatWest. As this gallery has been around since 1993, you can’t have missed it if you’re a true Stamfordian. However, if you aren’t sure what they offer they really specialise in a bespoke framing service. I actually took some paintings I bought from a street market while travelling to Gallery Stamford, I had no idea what I wanted and they were incredibly helpful showing me a variety of different styles, materials and widths and I loved the finished result. This shop is also full of eclectic greetings cards, beautiful prints and some original artworks too. • 3 Maiden Lane, Stamford, PE9 2AZ gallerystamford@gmail.com

modern sculpture and exquisite glass for thirty years. Jordan Coleman, the third generation of Colemans, has recently taken over as the new owner and director of the company, following in the footsteps of his father and grandfather, Spencer and Ronald Coleman. To celebrate their anniversary the Stamford gallery has had a full refurbishment and reopened earlier this year. The galleries are home to many leading British and European artists including Edward Hersey, Rob Hefferen, Roz Bell, Ian Mastin, Alfredo Navarro and Lawrie Williamson. You will also find international and critically acclaimed artists including Jorge Aguilsr-Agon, Geoffrey Humphries, Gyula Boros and Mattin Laurent Parrteriue. LOCAL BUSINESS
“On Top of the World” with local watchmaker and clock restorer, Loomes & Co. Loomes & Co achieved another milestone earlier this year, when their Stamford made watches reached the ‘Top of the World’ carried by the first serving Gurkha soldiers ever to summit Mount Everest. Deborah Pennell was following this truly remarkable expedition www. gurkhaeverest2017.co.uk
O
N Monday 15th May 2017, a small team of three serving Gurkhas summited Mount Everest. The rest of the team were to summit the following day. An historic achievement. Back in 2015 The Brigade of Gurkhas selected a team of 16 serving Gurkha soldiers to attempt to summit Everest as a celebration of 200 years of Gurkha service to the British Crown. Unfortunately, their expedition was to be brought to an abrupt end due to the catastrophic earthquake in Nepal. The resulting aftershocks reeked havoc on the slopes of Everest, causing a massive avalanche, which took the lives of 22 climbers. The Gurkha Team were lucky to escape alive, and spent several days locating missing climbers, and co-ordinating repatriation of the dead and injured from the mountain. In May 2016, the Gurkha Brigade decided to return to the mountain to complete ‘unfinished business’. Leaving the UK in March this year and arriving at Everest Base Camp in mid-April. They once again carried Loomes & Co watches amongst their equipment. The Gurkhas successful attempt in May 2017 marks the first time an entirely English-made watch has topped Everest since 1953. In this year, Sir Edmund Hillary and Sherpa Tenzing’s historic expedition carried a Smith’s, Britishmade, wristwatch to the peak. Robina Hill, Managing Director of Loomes & Co said, “this is an incredible achievement. To summit Mount Everest requires planning, timing and a degree of luck. We are delighted the Gurkhas agreed to wear our watches during their summit attempt. We can now say our watches have been to the top of the world.”
THE SUMMIT ATTEMPT Mount Everest, standing at 8,848m (29,029ft) has a tiny climbing window each year, with April and May being the best time to attempt an ascent to the summit. In the second week of May this year a dedicated team of local, high altitude climbers were due to prepare a route up Everest by fixing ropes for climbers. Their attempt to reach the top was hindered by high winds and heavy snowfall above 8,400 metres. They decided to retreat down the mountain and return to make the summit bid after 17th May, when better weather was forecast. Following several weeks acclimatisation, the Gurkha Everest Team had already established themselves high on the mountain. They too assessed the weather conditions, but felt there was a big enough weather window for a small group of the team to climb. They went for it, resulting in three serving Gurkhas summiting on the 15th May with a further ten on the 16th May - their mission was complete! Robert Loomes, said, “summiting Everest is a ground breaking day for both the Royal Gurkha Regiment and Loomes & Co. Major Gale, who led the expedition in 2015 came to our Stamford workshops once again in March 2017 to collect the watches, after we had modified them to function in temperatures down to minus 40C
degrees.” Brigadier Ian Rigden, expedition chairman, said “The aim of the expedition was to place a serving Gurkha on the summit of Mt. Everest for the first time. That the team had achieved this by placing nine Gurkhas and four British team members on the summit is a magnificent achievement. “ The Loomes brand is known for its robust and reliable entirely British-made timepieces. Robina Hill continues, “this was a great experiment for us and we are very grateful to the Gurkha 2017 Everest team for taking our watches with them. The watches will be auctioned this Autumn to raise funds for The Gurkha Welfare Trust and The Mountain Trust.” Statistics read that more than 4,000 people have scaled Everest since 1953, with over 280 climbers losing their lives whilst attempting to reach the ‘Top of the World’. And on the busiest day to date, 19th May 2012, 179 people climbed to the peak, resulting in a ‘traffic jam’ on Everest! The Gurkha Team now take their place in the record books. What they may not realise is that there was a thirteenth larger egg in the series and which was awarded to one very lucky Cadbury’s retailer. Whilst the twelve 22ct gold treasure eggs were each based on a different story or verse and plate in the book and weighed approximately 250g each, the thirteenth egg, also

EATING OUT
The Millstone in Barnack Zoe Noyes enthuses about her local
W
HEN a public house is on the doorstep of Hills & Holes; a National Nature reserve, a short drive from Stamford and Burghley House and part of a popular village, it is no wonder that The Millstone Inn which is tucked away in the centre of the village of Barnack is something of a hidden gem. For those that haven’t been for a few years but talk of it fondly, you should really revisit and see how much it has been updated and improved. Oliver & Amie Dawkins took over the lease of the The Millstone Inn in August of 2013 and since then it has had a complete refurbishment to go along with its exemplary menu which has something to appeal to all its customers. On entering The Millstone, you are greeted at the bar by a friendly face as well as a plethora of spirits (including some excellent Gins) along with a selection of wines, lagers, ciders and ales, including a guest ale to add variety to the regular choices. Food is served seven days a week and the menu is divided into mouth-watering sections; while you wait (nibbles), to begin (starters) and to follow (main courses) as well as ‘pub classics’, as well as a selection of freshly made burgers. The menu is competitively priced in line with other local establishments, so if you are looking for something ‘quick and cheap’ then it may not be for you, but if you want your food to be freshly prepared and cooked to order with attention to detail then The Millstone Inn definitely has something to whet your appetite. Having lived in the village for nearly four years, it is fair to say that we have visited The Millstone on many occasions and sampled some great dishes from Oliver’s kitchen. With a new menu making its appearance in August, July is the perfect time to taste for yourselves some of the dishes we’ve sampled in more recent months. A personal favourite is the Quail’s Egg on Asparagus & Parma Ham with a Mustard Dressing as a starter or lite bite, which has a multitude of flavours and textures that all blend together brilliantly, crowned with the satisfaction of the poached quails egg breaking over the asparagus. The Buffalo Wings as a nibble, or starter have wonderfully moist chicken which falls off the bone, with the semi crisp coating that adds fiery ‘buffalo wing’ flavour. For your main course, there is a wide selection. Some would comment that there is almost too much to choose from, but it gives every customer the chance to try something different and revisit knowing that they could have a different dish every day of the week should their oven be broken. From the moist and fragrant monkfish on a bed of egg noodles to a delicious brie & cranberry sandwich with an accompaniment of chips in a small wire basket served on a rustic wooden serving board, there is also a spring vegetable risotto and a sweet potato gnocchi with goat’s cheese something for everyone regardless of your appetite size - while half size portions are available on most dishes for the children too. Oliver’s fabulous curries are also a hit with many of the regulars! Desserts are not to be missed either. All are made by Oliver and his team on the premises and are as indulgent as they sound. With sticky toffee pudding and Baileys & white chocolate cheesecake to name but a few, there are normally about seven or eight to choose from so you always need to leave some room, or at least have one to share. The Millstone Inn is certainly somewhere to be recommended for its variety and quality of food and frequently changing menu. • For further information on events, menus and more visit www.millstoneinnbarnack.co.uk

HE Millstone also likes to keep its locals and visitors entertained. A significant loyal following exists for the annual charity Summer Ball (for Cancer Research) which is held in the marquee at the rear, while there are also more individual music nights. On Saturday 12th August, Barnack resident Richard Noyes will be performing an acoustic solo with covers from the likes of Stereophonics, The Killers and Kings of Leon as well as some of his own original material. The evening will start at 7.30pm, in the courtyard (weather permitting) which is a real sun trap. Richard is holding the event as part of his fund raising for the MAGPAS Air Ambulance, which he has chosen to support as he rides from Land’s End to John O’Groats in September, as part of the Deloitte Ride Across Britain event (www. virginmoneygiving.com/RichardNoyes) STAMFORD LIVING JULY 2017

FLAMING SUMMER FOOD
Turn your summer into an al fresco feast with Deborah Pennell’s delicious summer barbecue ideas
I
LEARNT to cook on a barbecue a few years back, out of necessity. We were moving house and the first ‘big’ project in our new home was to gut the kitchen and revamp a small and pokey space into a wonderful kitchen/living area. This was to take three long months! After we had exhausted every takeaway option in the area, I suggested to my husband we might get the barbecue out and use it to cook our food on. It changed my view on barbecuing forever. Suffice to say, there are a wealth of incredibly delicious meals you can create, with a degree of imagination, and the desire to experiment with new recipes. We cooked supper parties, developed our own range of puddings, and regularly executed a full English breakfast, with impressive results.

Charcoal or Gas Barbecue?
I can definitely see the plusses for a gas barbecue. With real charcoal you have the lottery of, will it get hot in time and, can I maintain the heat for the duration of the cooking time? On gas, you just fire it up and get cooking. However, I do believe cooking over real charcoal enhances the flavour of your food, and this is apparent if you experiment with adding different wood chips to create subtle smoky flavours. I no longer enter the summer with the fear and trepidation of cooking for dozens, on a regular basis. I just light the barbecue and the sky’s the limit.
Meat
Try different cuts of meat such as beef striploin, lamb neck fillet and huge racks of pork ribs. Spatchcock any type of poultry or game bird. Use marinades with lots of fresh herbs and serve with raitas, roasted garlic mayo and flavoured butters (these can be prepared in advance, rolled up in cling film and frozen). Roasted garlic and thyme, chilli and lime, harissa, sundried tomato and chervil can all add that extra dimension to your finished barbecued meats.
Veggie
There are so many options, but some of my favourites include, skewers of paneer marinated in a tikka spice, mini peppers stuffed with soft peppered goat’s cheese, portobello mushrooms with garlic and rosemary brioche crumbs, skewers of new potato, halloumi and sage, barbecue marinated tofu, whole corn with chilli butter, asparagus on toasted ciabatta with parmesan aioli, and abundant quantities of Mediterranean vegetables. And quite honestly, they are all easy to prepare and as delicious to eat as they sound. TIP: Cook fish on a very high heat and oil the fish prior to cooking so the skin doesn’t tear.
Fish and Shellfish
One of my favourite summer suppers is barbecued sardines with a home-grown tomato salad, a big pile of lettuce leaves littered with fresh herbs, a hunk of sourdough and a simple salad dressing. Most fish can be cooked on the barbecue, it is the way you cook it that matters. Meaty fish such as tuna, snapper, mackerel, salmon and swordfish all hold their own. And some shellfish are perfect, marinated and placed on skewers directly over the coals, or cooked in their shells ready to be peeled and dunked in delicious sauces. With lighter fish such as cod, or similar, wrap in parchment parcels and place on tin foil; this avoids overcooking, and the fish falling apart.
Marinades and Rubs
The right marinade can elevate even the cheapest cuts of meat from barbecue hell to alfresco feast. Rubs add flavour and result in a delicious outside crust on your meat or fish. Over the years, I have taken ideas from several recipes and developed my own favourite ones:
Jerk Marinade The word ‘Jerk’ describes a style of cooking originating from Jamaica. The meat/fish is marinated for hours in a spicy mix, then cooked over an outdoor pit lined with pimento wood. Serves: 2-4 • 6 spring onions, greens only, thinly sliced • 2 large shallots • 2 large garlic cloves • 1 tblsp fresh ginger • 1 tblsp scotch bonnet pepper, seeded and ribbed • 1 tblsp ground allspice (use whole allspice berries, lightly toasted in a hot pan, then ground fine) • 1 tsp ground black pepper • 1/4 tsp cayenne pepper • 1 tsp ground cinnamon • 1/2 tsp ground nutmeg • 1 tblsp fresh thyme leaves • 1 tblsp dark brown sugar • 1/2 cup fresh orange juice • Juice of 1 lime • 1/4 cup red wine vinegar • 1/4 cup soy sauce • 1/4 cup olive oil • Put all the ingredients except for the spring onions, orange and lime juice, wine vinegar, soy sauce and olive oil in a food processor and
blend until semi-smooth. Transfer to a bowl and slowly whisk in the remaining ingredients leaving the spring onions until last. Check for seasoning. Mix in the spring onions and leave to sit for one hour so the flavours develop. • Place your meat or fish in a bowl or plastic bag and add the marinade. Massage the marinade into the meat or fish until it coats the food. Refrigerate, and leave for a minimum of 30 minutes up to 4 hours, or even overnight if you are using a great big joint of meat. TIPS: The heat in this marinade is created by the scotch bonnet pepper. Increase or decrease this ingredient depending on your heat preference. Add water-soaked allspice berries to the barbecue coals for smoke and additional flavour. I had to include this recipe, as it’s a real winner….
Barbecue Sauce for Beer lovers • 1 cup good quality tomato ketchup • 1 cup cider vinegar • 325ml bottle of Guinness • 11/2 cups soft dark brown sugar • 1/2 tsp sea salt • 1/2 tsp freshly ground black pepper • 1/2 tsp garlic powder • 1/2 tsp onion powder • 1/2 tsp chipotle paste
BBQ sides
We all love a boiled new potato smothered in butter and a big green salad, but can I persuade you to try something slightly different? Finish off your plate with interesting sides such as sweet potato fries, broad bean guacamole, Asian slaw, new potatoes with chilli and lime butter, harissa mayo; the list could go on and on.
And don’t forget pudding…. Roasted bananas with dulce de leche, s’mores, griddled peaches, barbecued pineapple with spiced rum and toasted coconut. Again, experiment and see what works.
• Pour all the ingredients into a medium sized pan and bring to the boil • Reduce heat and simmer for 30-40 minutes • Serve immediately, or store in a jar in the fridge for up to one week. Five top tips for better barbecuing: • Thaw out frozen meat thoroughly before cooking • Do not use leftover marinade for food • Take meat out of the fridge and allow it to come up to room temperature before cooking • With large cuts of barbecued meat, leave them to rest (in the same way you would a roasting joint) • Turn food regularly to avoid getting a charred outside and uncooked inside Let’s hope this month brings long hot sunny days and al fresco eating. Fire up the barbecue, experiment with new flavours and enjoy the experience. CHEF PROFILE
Prem Kharel Head Chef of The 8848 Nepalese & Indian Restaurant This month Deborah Pennell goes behind the scenes of one of Stamford‘s most popular Asian restaurants
T
HE 8848 is part of a family-run business, who established their Stamford restaurant back in 2012. From the tiniest of kitchens Prem Kharel and his team produce exquisite, light, fresh authentic Nepalese and Indian food of the highest calibre. Where are you originally from? I am originally from Western Nepal. I moved to the UK in 2007 to work as a Chef. How long have you worked at 8848? I’ve been working at the 8848 for four years now, initially I worked as a Tandoori Chef for one year and then moved up to Head Chef in 2013. Where did you train to become a chef? I didn’t really train to be a Chef. I became interested in cooking when I was about 19 years old and my parents taught me to cook and encouraged me to pursue a career as a Chef. I eventually set up and owned my own restaurant in Western Nepal. Have you worked anywhere else in the UK as a Chef? When I first arrived in the UK I worked in a small restaurant in Warwickshire followed by a stint in Glasgow before coming to work in Stamford. How many people work in the kitchens here? On average five to six people depending on the day of the week, we have more chefs working during the busy weekend times. How would you describe your food at The 8848? It is a mixture of authentic Nepalese and Indian food, plus a mix of fusion dishes. All the recipes are freshly prepared using only the highest quality ingredients.
What is the most popular dish on the menu? I can safely say there is not one dish on the menu that I cook more than the others. The Chef’s Platter part of the menu is very popular, especially the Sichuan Inspired Lamb and the Malabar Prawn Special. In addition to the extensive daily menu, we also offer a monthly special. Is it difficult to locally source the ingredients you need to execute your dishes? No. We live so close to Leicester, so the traditional authentic ingredients we need are readily available nearby. All our meat, fish and vegetables come from local suppliers. We buy a few specialist ingredients directly from Nepal, some of the spices, and these we source from an importer in London who supplies the Nepalese community in the city. What is your personal favourite dish? All the ones I cook! What ingredients could you not do without? The five core ingredients to Nepalese and Indian cookery – ginger, garlic, cumin, coriander and a range of chillies. Give me one or two interesting food facts about The 8848. We use 18kg of high quality large king prawns a week and around 40kg of rice per week, which equates to 2,080kg each year!
I understand you cater for parties. Yes. We are regularly asked to cater for parties, and provide a buffet style menu, which seems to be very much enjoyed by our clients. What are your interests outside of work? I enjoy spending time with my family because I am always very busy in the restaurant. • To preview the extensive selection of authentic Nepalese and Indian dishes offered by The 8848, visit their website on www.the8848.co.uk • The 8848 comes highly recommended, and caters generously for all tastes, including vegetarians, providing a wide range of innovative dishes to choose from.

EATING OUT
Stamford hotspots Victoria Magnall enjoys a couple of Stamford’s favourite outdoor spots in this great weather
The Mad Turk T
HE perfect place to escape this summer is right on our doorstep…The Mad Turk garden is the most idyllic setting which emulates the holiday experience of al fresco dining on warm balmy evenings. Claudia Bayley and I dined here midweek and discovered why the garden is so highly rated. On arrival, you feel instantly relaxed as you take the pretty walk up stone steps to the courtyard with a stunning pergola. Beautiful flowers, fairy lights and traditional glass lanterns adorn the patio, and dividing tall shrubs create privacy for diners whilst not losing the lively atmosphere of happy customers. We opted for the popular mixed mezze for two plus our favourite; halloumi chips – which deserve a special mention as they are out of this world and come highly recommended! The mezze consists of a varying selection of ten dishes (which includes humous, cacik, tabboulah borek, domla, chargrilled hellim, tarama, patlican biber kabak, arnavut cigeri, calamari, smoked aubergine salad, chickpea salsa, beetroot and potato salad). It is as delicious as it sounds and is the perfect selection to indulge in some of The Mad Turk’s mouth-watering dishes. The menu of authentic Turkish Cypriot food offers such a wide selection including a host of vegetarian

dishes that it can take some time to make your selection. We loved that we were not rushed and were able to savour a glass of wine and some olives and bread whilst we made our choice. Owners Kaz and Shelly have created a very special place at The Mad Turk. Celebrated for the welcoming ambiance, friendly service and consistently outstanding food, it is no wonder that booking is essential! Having always enjoyed eating inside at The Mad Turk, (which is a terrific evening, particularly with a great group of friends) I was
OCATED close to the picturesque Barn Hill, The Crown heads up one of the prime locations in Stamford, purveying the comings and goings of All Saints’ Place and Red Lion Square. It is the obvious meeting place for those new to Stamford as it is known by all locals, is easy to find and has parking for residents! The Crown is now in the summer season where the pretty beer garden is bustling from lunch until lights out. The perfect garden for all who enjoy an afternoon meet up or business meeting al fresco; with more than adequate shade and seating means it is ideal for families too. For locals, the main bar is like the ‘Cheers’ theme tune, ‘where everybody knows your name’, for visitors it is a place where you are made welcome on arrival. The team are as delightful and eclectic as the décor, utterly charming and true one offs. With enough seating and tables, customers are rarely left searching for a place to settle for the evening. Food is served throughout, but for a more special occasion the main restaurant is superb. It goes without saying that a Knead menu is bursting with variety, imagination and local produce - there really is something for every taste and palate. The added extra for me is the working jukebox, where diners can select, free of charge, their favourite tunes from past eras. On a recent work event, we couldn’t get our selections in quick enough, reliving our childhood chart days! Guests visiting Stamford often stay at The Crown as it has always been, and still is, a

hugely impressed by the garden experience. Reading reviews of other diners, it seems I am not alone. Comments such as ‘my most favourite restaurant to go to’ and ‘best food in Stamford’ reiterate the thoughts of the converted. The Mad Turk is one of those special restaurants that you get excited about introducing someone to as you know that it will instantly become their favourite restaurant as well! • The Mad Turk, 8-9 St Paul’s St, Stamford, PE9 2BE 01780 238001 www.themadturk.co.uk
thriving hotel. Competing against famous local names, The Crown holds its own on price and facilities. Residents adore the locality, and rave about the interiors, particularly the luxurious bathrooms and tasteful bedrooms. For those staying with their beloved and well-behaved dogs, an adorable doggy bag of goodies awaits…there is even a huge jar of dog treats on the bar! A room that often goes unseen, is the Daniel Lambert room, located above the snug. I adore this room for so many reasons, not only because it is adorned with an abundance of portraits of the impressive Leicestershire gaol keeper, but because it is the perfect setting for business meetings and small gatherings. There is a wonderful atmosphere in the Daniel Lambert room and for those wanting a couple of quiet hours on a laptop, there really is no better place. As the ‘Head Girl’ of Knead Pubs, The Crown is a truly sublime venue and is a must visit to anyone living in or visiting Stamford. • The Crown Hotel, 6 All Saints’ Pl, Stamford PE9 2AG 01780 763136 www.kneadpubs.co.uk

OUT & ABOUT
Into the Vale The Vale of Belvoir (pronounced ‘beaver’, but you knew that) is only a 30 minutes dawdle up the A1. The area, which stretches west from Grantham towards Nottingham and south to Melton Mowbray, is famous for Belvoir Castle and the local production of Stilton cheese. Rebecca Chatterton discovers that the area is more than just a foodie’s paradise, although most of her trip does involve eating.
G
RAB your bike, walking boots or a child as cover and head north to the Vale of Belvoir. Named in Norman times for its pretty views, the villages, woods and sheep fields on its ridge still feel sleepy and unspoilt – the sort of place where perfecting cheese, pies and cordials has been the work of centuries. Dominated as it is by Belvoir Castle, the countryside provides lots of opportunity for unexpectedly diverse walks and some beautiful cycle routes whether up on the crest around the Castle or down in the Vale itself along the Grantham Canal. THE CAKE HOLE Surely one of the focuses of any day out is the pit stop? Between walking, cycling or general touring it’s a comfort to know that you’re never far from somewhere to loll about with a drink in hand as you scrutinise a menu. With this sensible approach in mind and to fortify myself before my adventure, I nip into The Cake Hole in Barrowby, a village conveniently situated as I turn off the A1. The place is busy from the moment it opens in the morning and everyone is welcomed like a local. Owned by Kirk Stubbs for the last three and a half years it’s a café and deli by day and a Bistro on Friday and Saturday nights. While I’m there good things, steaming and smelling delicious just keep on emerging from the kitchen - the Red Velvet cake is the most popular treat although I buy some brownies to take away. Kirk trained in the RAF cooking for VIPs and his Friday and Saturday Bistro nights are booked up months in advance and highly recommended.

STAMFORD LIVING JULY 2017
THE JUBILEE WAY, THE CASTLE AND CANAL From Barrowby I wind my way through the back lanes to Woolsthorpe-by-Belvoir, a little village in the shadow of the Castle and a perfect spot for exploring the Jubilee Way. The walk starts 20 miles off to the west but is at its prettiest here at its finish. This section of the Jubilee Way provides sweeping views and a wonderful contrast - the family seat of the Duke of Rutland dominates the landscape on one side of your path through woods and parkland where time stands still. But look north as you walk and time fast forwards. The panorama of the vale below reaches towards Newark and even on a dull day reveals the distant chimneystacks and meandering of industry along the Trent. All around the castle the chocolate-box villages have pubs to explore such as The Wheel at Branston or the Manners Arms in Knipton. At Woolsthorpe you can retreat to the Chequers Inn for a civilised pint or if you have children to amuse, the spruced up Dirty Duck is just the place for a fizzy pop before exploring the Grantham Canal. This once essential waterway which winds its way between Grantham and Nottingham is now impassable by boat but is a busy place for moorhens, coots and swans and makes a perfect walk or leisurely cycle for all ages of the family. Travelling beside the canal down in the Vale you look up to Belvoir Castle. The castle and gardens are open to the public on selected days throughout the summer and the pyromaniacs among you should consider taking an evening picnic to the annual Fireworks Championships held in August.
DICKIES BUTCHERY Explaining to a child how a canal lock works is bound to make you hungry so set off for Plungar where Dickies Butchery, open for barely a year is becoming famous around the Vale. I bought steaks for the bbq and can confirm they were delicious. Dickie’s is open from Thursday to Sunday with a wonderfully eccentric cattle ranch vibe. At the weekend the pop-up Cowshed Coffee Bar means you can taste the home-reared products. As customers try to choose their Sunday roast at the butcher’s counter, they’re rendered helpless with temptation by the smells of meat cooking in the open kitchen. Before they know it, they find themselves ordering something for Saturday Brunch too before plonking themselves on one of the long wooden benches under canvas to drink coffee from enamel mugs. DOVE COTTAGE HOSPICE Dove Cottage Hospice in the next village of Stathern (just wander over the bridge from the Canal) has situated itself here to make the most of the area’s tranquillity. To help raise funds it’s built a separate country tearoom with a great playground for children and the place is always buzzing. They’ve thought of every convenience for passing visitors– there’s even a place to tie up your horse if you’ve arrived on four legs. After you’ve tried one of their homemade scones in the tea room, upstairs the charity shop is a well stocked little gem and it seems rude not to have a mooch and make a purchase.
OTHER ACTIVITIES All this and more in a day out in the Vale of Belvoir. I haven’t mentioned activities such as the Ski Diving at Langar or the Gokarting Centre – it really wasn’t the day for those sorts of activities. I plan to visit again but this time with an occasion in mind and to treat myself to supper at Langar Hall the timeless country house hotel known for its delectable menu and often delightfully idiosyncratic dining experience. CHEESE! The Vale is famous for the Long Clawson, Colston Basset and Cropwell Bishop dairies all of which produce Stilton within miles of each other and have shops onsite. There are, however, other great cheeses being produced in the area. Go up the hill to the Eastwell crossroads and you’ll discover the Belvoir Ridge Creamery making Colwick Cheese from their Poll cows. In these days when consumers demand to know the provenance of the things they buy, what could be more ingenious than an on farm fresh milk dispenser? Just park up in the yard at the Creamery, take out your clean litre bottle, follow the instructions for filling up and taste fresh milk as it should be!

A day is all it takes Rachael Bull recharges her batteries at a one-day kickstarter at Homefield Grange, Northamptonshire’s detox, weight loss and medispa retreat
“G
ET back in control, fast.” After an over-indulgent holiday that included far too much food and drink, the promise of Homefield Grange’s kickstarter day came at just the right time. The day package is a relatively new addition to Homefield, which has already made a name for itself as a top residential retreat. Designed to help you eat well, think well, move well and feel well, I was curious to find out what a difference a day makes… After my 9.30am check in, I was shown to my own gorgeous en-suite room overlooking the fields. Homefield is based in a converted farmhouse, with a fabulous kitchen where guests can watch food demonstrations, an oakpanelled living room with huge sink-in sofas and a roaring fire. The rooms are beautifully designed and overlook the pretty courtyard to one side or rolling Northamptonshire countryside to the other. It’s a relaxed, informal atmosphere – you can spend the whole day in your dressing gown if you so wish, the ethos being ‘Do as much or as little as you want to…’. The residential guests were lovely and welcoming, sharing what they’d learnt… some had come back many times, which bodes well. I started with a relaxing 30-minute stretch class followed by a private session with personal trainer Andy. I was surprised at how much I learnt about my own biomechanics, discovering the sources of various niggles that had baffled me for years. Next up was my nutritional and lifestyle consultation with Judy. A chat about my lifestyle, eating and drinking habits uncovered more home truths, including the cause of my
68
afternoon energy slumps. I came away with print-outs full of tips and healthy meal and snack suggestions which, over a month on, I still rely on for inspiration. Lunch was a delicious and colourful salad with a surprisingly large helping of guacamole, along with a shot glass of green juice – much more pleasant than I’d anticipated. Residential guests can choose between juice fasting or Homefield’s sugar-balancing diet, dependant on their goals and any underlying health issues. The afternoon brought a divine and muchneeded G5 lymphatic massage to break down stubborn fatty deposits (yay) and reduce the appearance of cellulite (double yay). This followed a fascinating dietary intolerance test, which instantly and painlessly tested my reaction to 200 different foods. A few of the most common intolerances cropped up, including gluten and cane sugar, and the print outs I took away provided oodles of useful information about how I could gradually eliminate the biggest offenders. I was astounded about how much I’d learnt in just one day. And I left feeling excited and motivated rather than overwhelmed – there was no draconian command that I must never touch a donut again (god forbid), just honest, expert personalised advice. The results? One month on, I’ve cut out caffeine, wheat and sugar and have been surprised at how easy it’s been, the caffeine withdrawal headaches aside. I’ve lost weight, despite
eating more than I did before. More of the good stuff, less of the bad! The kickstarter day includes a stretch class, a PT session, a nutritional consultation, two treatments of your choice, lunch and snacks, a practical food demonstration, and free use of all the facilities including the gym and infra-red sauna. • Find out more at www.homefieldgrangeretreat.co.uk or call 01536 712219.
NUGGETS OF ADVICE FROM THE HOMEFIELD EXPERTS • Always have breakfast but avoid sugary cereals. Eggs are good. • Stick to savoury snacks (veg crudites are best). If you have fruit, eat some nuts first to avoid a blood sugar crash. • Read ingredient labels. Be wary of healthy-looking packaged or vacuumed stuff, they tend to sneak sugar in, even if it doesn’t show up on nutritional labels. Avoid anything ‘low-fat’, they’re usually pumped full of baddies. • Don’t calorie count, it won’t help you lose weight. Focus on making sure that everything you eat brings some nutrition.

ASK LEO
HARRY BURTON Photographer of Tutankhamen’s Tomb Born Stamford, St Martin’s 1879; died Asyut, Egypt 1940: Harry Burton’s name is not well known in the town of his birth. Jean Orpin and Sue Lee have been looking at his extraordinary life and achievements.
Family & Childhood Harry’s father, William Burton, was born and lived all his life in the St Martin’s area of Stamford. For most of Harry’s youth his Uncle John, a printing compositor, lived no more than a few doors away. Harry born on 13th Sept 1879 at 18 Burghley Lane, St Martin’s, was the 5th of 11 children born to William and his wife Annie between 1873 and 1891. William’s employment through the years was given as cabinet maker, carpenter, joiner and upholsterer. All the children attended St Martin’s School (now the SHS Music School), generally starting before their 4th birthdays. When Harry was about 10yrs old they moved across High St, St Martin’s to 5 Church Lane, sometimes known as Back Lane where his parents lived for the rest of their lives. It has been difficult to identify as house numbers changed. This photograph of William and Annie, taken before WW1, was in front of what is now No 21, probably their home.
Left: William and Annie, Above: 21 Church Lane
The First Step In 1890s John Henry (Harry) Cust, heir to the Belton estate, served as MP for Stamford and during this time his cousin (Robert Henry) Hobart Cust was also based in or near Stamford. Hobart was involved in various artistic and philanthropic capacities in the town and, somehow, came in contact with the Burton family. Later it was claimed he sponsored Harry’s education but it is not clear in what way. Cust was involved in Eversley School, Stamford, which prepared boys for ‘a commercial life’ so maybe Harry went there or maybe Cust enabled him to attend courses at the Technical School. Hobart Cust can certainly be credited with recognising potential as when he left Stamford, Harry went with him as his Secretary.
The Burton Family Harry probably left Stamford in the late 1890s. Several of his siblings also left Stamford for some or all their lives and possibly it was not only Harry who benefited from Hobart Cust’s patronage. His brother Fred worked in London and his eldest son was named Eric Hobart Burton. By the time of Eric’s birth in 1912, Fred was back in Stamford running his own boot-making business at 16 Rock Rd for many years. Joseph, a couple of years older than Harry, left Stamford to work on the railways settling eventually in Little Bowden near Market Harborough with his family. Other members of the family remained in Stamford or returned to the town at some stage. Two of Harry’s sisters married and stayed while Harry’s eldest brother, John Robert, a painter, gilder and house decorator lived at 5 Belton Street for over 30 years until his death in 1949. This was the address that Harry used when he was travelling and was required to give an address in England. His mother died in 1917 and his father in 1923; of their 11 children, 6 died in Stamford and the last, Walter, died in Corby in 1976 aged 90yrs. Ask Leo would be delighted to hear from any descendants still living in the area. The family must have followed Harry’s career with interest and hopefully his father saw the first photographs in the London Illustrated News. Despite his adventurous life, Harry kept in touch with his family, visited Stamford regularly and sent them sumptuous presents. Just as he had been sponsored in his youth, he provided education at Stamford School for at least one of the next generation.

With Hobart Cust in Italy As Secretary to Hobart Cust, Harry went to Italy living on the Via dei Bardi in Florence. In the early 20thC Cust became a highly regarded Art Historian of the Italian Renaissance paying tribute to Harry, “… I have to thank, with all due appreciation and gratitude, my patient painstaking secretary and companion, Mr Henry [sic] Burton, whose share of the labour, physical, mental and mechanical, entailed in collecting material and preparing it for the press, has been no light one.” Harry continued to work for Cust and live with him and his wife at least until they returned to England about 1910 when he embarked on the next stage of his career.

Conserving a Chariot Inside the Tomb
Tutankhamun’s Mask
With Theodore Davis in Egypt
The New York Met
Photographer Par Excellence
Davis, an American, sponsored excavations in Egypt from 1902, a time when major finds were discovered in the Valley of the Kings. In his last two years, his Director of Excavations was Harry Burton. How did Harry qualify for this job? It is thought it was in Italy he developed his photographic skills and met Davis. Perhaps he also discovered an interest in archaeology and Egypt? Or maybe it was just a fortuitous meeting with someone else who saw his potential? By 1914, Davis felt “the valley was exhausted” so withdrew. Harry stayed. Later he expressed the view that Davis had only been about 6 feet away from Tutankhamun’s tomb.
When Davis left, Harry secured a position working on the staff of the New York Metropolitan Museum Egyptian Expedition that had a permanent base in Cairo. His talents were already apparent to everyone working in the area. The concession to excavate the Valley of the Kings had passed to Lord Carnarvon who employed Howard Carter to supervise the work. When a new tomb was discovered by Carter in 1922 and subsequently opened in 1923, Carter asked The Met for the loan of Harry’s services. Harry then divided his time between the Egyptian Expedition and Tutankhamun’s tomb, spending the rest of his working life in Egypt. Carter undoubtedly held him in high esteem professionally and personally making him one of the executors of his Will.
Although he continued to describe himself as an archaeologist, it is his fame as a photographer that lives on. The first pictures with his name attached appeared in The Illustrated London News in 1921 and although it was by no means his only work, it is the amazing portrayal of unveiling Tutankhamun’s tomb that sets him apart. His dark room was a tomb excavated in Davis’ time, he used electric arc lights, experimented with colour and taught himself to shoot ‘movies’. In 1924 Harry went to Hollywood to learn more although studio conditions were so different they had little to teach him. It has been said that he painted in light and this description from The Met summarises his work. “His masterful use of natural and artificial light, as well as his experience and high standards, make the photographs not only valuable scientific records but also works of art”.
Harry and Minnie In 1914 Harry married Minnie Duckett who became his constant travelling companion at work and play. Excavation took place between November and April, the rest of the year was usually spent in Europe - at their apartment in Florence, in England and travelling. They went to Vienna and Salzburg; to Naples, Genoa and Pisa; to Interlaken, Grindelwald and on the train up the Jungfraujoch: they also travelled on the Orient Express. In London they went to the theatre, the opera and to art galleries. Everywhere they met or made friends from all classes and nationalities. The most extensive trip of all was the one to America in 1924. They travelled First Class: the Mauretania on the way out (“Beautiful, luxurious boat”, says Minnie) and the Berengaria on the way back. In New York they went, of course, to the Met; in Chicago they went to the Art Institute; they visited the Grand Canyon, Santa Barbara, Seattle, Vancouver, Banff, Lake Louise, Boston, Harvard and didn’t omit Niagara!
• Photographers interested in Harry’s methods can find details in The Yorkshire Post Feb 16th 1923 available on the British Newspapers Archive in Stamford Library. • Ask Leo would like to thank Barbara Midgley who by contacting stamfordboys.uk inspired this article and provided much of the research. STAMFORD PEOPLE PHOTO: ELLI DEAN
The Day My Daughter Becomes a Woman by Stamford’s Poet Laureate, Emma Cuddeford The day my daughter becomes a woman, I will give her all my best plans. Plans I couldn’t fulfil, plans I forgot and plans I let slip through my hands. I will tell her that nothing can stop her from doing what needs to be done and Nothing can stop her from winning what seems to have been won And Nothing Can Stop Her…
The power of poetry There’s a new force in town ready to ‘wow’ you with words and stir you with stanzas. Kate Cadman meets master of the meter, Emma Cuddeford, Stamford’s sparkling new Poet Laureate.
W
RITING poetry has had an enormous impact on the life of Stamford’s new Poet Laureate, Emma Cuddeford. Emma fell for Stamford after visiting the town on ‘date nights’ with her partner, Adam. Originally from North London, Emma moved to Stamford to settle and raise her
family here. “I fell in love with the place; it’s a beautiful, quaint town,” she says. Since her arrival, Emma and Adam have been blessed with a daughter, Liberty. “When I first had Liberty, I went to every single baby group – music classes, baby massage etc but found these quite lonely places. I felt insecure and self-conscious because you couldn’t help but compare your child to those next to you. I found trying to make ‘mum friends’ could be nerve-wracking and uncomfortable.” “I knew everyone else was probably feeling the same but that didn’t seem to make it any better. I was probably feeling very lonely because of the move up here and was going through an adjustment period to a different life. What I felt I needed was a safe, non-judgemental place to make friends without the kids. I wanted somewhere to go that I could talk about being a mum without the sugar coating on it. Post baby blues is real and yet it can be very hard to recognise whilst you are going through it.” “What really helped me was writing poetry - it’s a form of therapy. Expressing my feelings in words down on paper felt good,” explains Emma. “It’s important for women to write - it can help to keep things in perspective.” Taking on the role of the town’s Poet Laureate will allow Emma to put her pen to extra good use. “I am completely honoured and extremely excited to be given this title. I am looking forward to building on the work of outgoing Poet Laureate, Camilla McLean, and will be working alongside the Mayor, Councillor Tony Story, carrying out civic duties as well as working closely with Stamford Arts Centre. “I have been given a licence to do what I want with the role, so watch this space for details,” Emma enthuses. In order to take the title, Emma had to submit a poem and perform it in front of a panel of judges. She describes her poem as “a love letter to my daughter. It is very passionate with some light relief in it too. It was lovely to be able to share it - I found the whole process of performing this personal piece very touching.”

STAMFORD LIVING JULY 2017
The day my daughter becomes a woman, I will tell her to write me a list. Then if she’s bruised and lonely and nothing is what it seems We will have in our hands a list of her dreams. And we will tick if off One By One I will tell her that yes, we all screw up, get cut, lose battles, fall way down. But darling I know you You can get up again, fix up again and re-adjust your crown. Always remember I taught you to breathe fire. And when you remember that, it won’t all seem so dire… For a girl that breathes fire is never left in the cold. The day my daughter becomes a woman, I will tell her to leave. To explore every country and find a love to believe. Or not. Stay by your mama’s side and we’ll conquer mountains right here. You can do what you want, I won’t interfere. Well I might interfere …but only because I once was standing in your shoes And the thing is with mothers, you don’t get to choose. Trust me I know. The day my daughter becomes a woman, I will look up to the sky And if I find her there with her head in the clouds, I won’t bat an eye. I know when you’re up there you have a much better view… And I’ll tell her “Darling, I never wanted you to just grow up… I wanted you to grow out too.” The day my daughter becomes a woman, I will ask her “Who are you?” And I will smile at any answer she gives me as long as it’s true If she tells me I’m crazy and sticks her nose up like some daughters do, I will smile even more and laugh just like my mother used to. She’ll get the joke eventually. I did. The day my daughter becomes a woman I won’t make a fuss, I’ll present her with this poem which I wrote just for us, It’s messy and clumsy a little like you But you can’t help it darling, you are only Two.
