his is the year that we need to fight harder than ever for our town centre. Many people are fighting its corner now, including the Stamford Chamber of Commerce and the Stamford Mercury. And, the change in parking enforcement (providing that the residents’ parking is satisfactorily sorted) is also a big plus. I know many people who now drive into town from the villages knowing that they have a good chance of finding a 2-hour free parking space, especially in the west end of Bath Row. This makes shopping or having a meal that much cheaper and more convenient, and undoubtedly is starting to bring in extra people. We can all do our bit by voting with our feet, as so many of you already do. Walk into town, admire its beauty, bump into friends, enjoy some banter, have a cup of coffee and support your local shops.

The all new Kersty!
Sometimes a story falls into your lap, a lovely lady who deserves a fresh start. Sally Stillingfleet finds out some tricks from Browns, Aromatica, Energy and Cavells to help to transform Kersty and give her the boost she deserves!
Kersty before
K
ersty was one of Browns’ first customers back in September 2011, in need of her hair re-doing after life-altering surgery. With her hair long, straggly and partially shaved, the ravages of her post-op brain tumour left Tahli with the task of re-building Kersty’s confidence in her appearance. Tahli is responsible for Kersty’s hair for this makeover and ever since they first met at Browns she has coaxed her hair back from the brink. “Tahli’s transformation on my first visit to Browns has forced me to style my hair, put on my make-up and make more of an effort!” Kersty explained. “It’s important to look as if you are coping, even if you’re not!” Today her colour has gone slightly deeper, with multi-tonal highlights to give the cut more depth. Cutting the hair slightly higher at the back has created more volume. Earlier in the day Sarah, owner of Aromatica, applied false lashes and using Lily Lolo (mineral make-up) and T. LeClerc, she created a cool new make-up look to complement the clothes. Sarah can be contacted for any special occasion make-up for weddings/special nights out. Having a professional apply your make-up really makes a difference and here Kersty has been pushed out of her comfort zone, for the better. Sarah and Claire from Energy found the perfect pair of Levis jeans for Kersty, who decided she needed to invest! Knowing at a glance the style which was right for her, at Energy you are always sure to come out with great jeans. The vital hooks on which so many outfits can be hung – casual longer line top (seen here, worn with a scarf) or glam up for evening with a chiffon top? At Cavells, Rosie also suggested a longer top to skim over Kersty’s ‘apple’ shape and elongate. The cuffed trousers flatter and make a change from her usual “leggings and dress combo.” Kersty explained that for work at Marcia May Shoes she has to be comfortable and practical and these outfits offer up two options, whilst keeping to the trends for Spring/Summer. • A big thank you to everyone for making this such a special day for Kersty, for investing time and effort into making her look and feel amazing.

Sam and the whole team at Browns have been so helpful, wanting to treat Kersty, who has become a valuable client at the salon, which has been open for just over a year now. hen owners Alan and Veronica Rouse first opened their workrooms in All Saints’ Street all those years ago, their aim was to offer a quality bespoke personal service to their customers, and that’s the basis of their success today. Since then they’ve extended their mindboggling range of services to include everything from elaborate Georgian and Jacobeanstyle pelmets to simple roller blinds; from contemporary headboards to beautiful four poster bed hangings; from minimalist chrome tracks to extravagantly carved wooden poles and from loose covers to full re-upholstery. They also supply the full range of Lloyd Loom furniture and a superb selection of sofas and
chairs from Whitehead Designs. Their showroom is stuffed with designer fabric books, not to mention a huge range of wallpapers and paints from companies such as Zoffany, Osborne & Little, Harlequin, Sanderson, Colefax & Fowler, Coles and Farrow & Ball. Fact sheet: • Owner Alan trained as a pattern maker with former local business Blackstones, so everything is precisely and carefully fitted • The four employees in the workrooms have served the company for over 60 years combined, and the 2 showroom ladies for over 20 years • Most of the company’s business is from former satisfied customers who keep coming back…. they have refurbished 6 houses for one of their clients!

Zombie Nation Research out recently has revealed that we’re a nation of zombies with 1 in 5 of us claiming to feel like one after a disturbed night’s sleep. Results show that over two thirds of people in the UK are getting less than the recommended eight hours of sleep a night with money worries (53%), work (35%) and needing the toilet (30%) causing the most unrest. Acupuncture Awareness Week (25th February to 3rd March 2013) aims to educate people about how traditional acupuncture can help improve sleep and aid relaxation. Among the 82% of us who admit to sleeping troubles or insomnia, many of us are missing the point when it comes to this ancient Chinese medicine. With 2.3 million acupuncture treatments carried out each year, traditional acupuncture is one of the most popular complementary therapies practised in the UK today. Yet statistics show that 1 in 5 of us would only consider acupuncture for sleep as a last resort. Almost a quarter of people admit they didn’t realise acupuncture could benefit them despite its widely recognised health benefits. Duncan Ford, a member of the British Acupuncture Council comments: “Traditional acupuncture is known to be enormously beneficial for helping to correct sleep problems. Most people find treatment wonderfully relaxing, as acupuncture is known to calm the nervous system and also increase endorphin production. “At some point in our lives, we all experience periods of disturbed sleep and even insomnia. Many patients find a course of traditional acupuncture can be extremely beneficial to ease them through these times, helping to identify the root cause of the sleeping problem. When looking for a practitioner, make sure you find a qualified acupuncturist registered with the British Acupuncture Council to ensure a high standard of care and safety.” • To contact Duncan about acupuncture he can be reached at the Broad Street Practice in Stamford on 01780 480889, or directly on 07714 575720, or visit his website at www.dfordacupuncture.co.uk. BUS INES S AWAR DS
Stamford & Rutland Business Awards Entry Deadline Extended Due to High Demand!
A
s a result of the high numbers of requests to extend the allowed entry time we are delighted to announce that the final deadline for the business awards has been extended to Thursday 14th February 2013. Competition in several of these categories is already hotting up and so we are delighted to be able to help additional businesses showcase their talents. So why should your business be entering? Well, Anna Rogers a PR consultant based in the region says: “Entering business awards is a great way to promote your business. For the best results the awards should reflect the core values of your company, so if your company prides itself on having the best customer service then it makes sense to encourage your clients or customers to enter you for the Customer Focus Award. If you like to champion your excellent staff then Employee of the Year award is the obvious choice, if you value cutting edge product design then Innovation award would be the best for you. Winning business awards will enhance your company’s profile with customers and suppliers and will give a boost to employee morale. Local Living sponsors these Business Awards, so an award win means positive coverage reaching an ABC1 readership of 96,000. Don’t forget that you can promote your success too and the easiest and best way to do this is through social media like your Twitter account, Facebook page or company blog. Simply announce your win, let people know how delighted you are and upload photos from the awards dinner and remember to celebrate with staff so they know how important they were in achieving the award. “I have successfully put clients forward for awards including a property developer who won an Insider Yorkshire Property Industry Award for a mixed-use development alongside the canal in Leeds city centre, a previously underdeveloped area at the time. This gained regional, local and trade media coverage helping to promote the development among potential buyers and commercial investors. A successful female business client supplying ready meals to the supermarkets won
Categories There are 12 different categories available so there is ample opportunity for all our local businesses to share their successes with the community. The categories are as follows: • The Employer of the Year • The Employee of the Year • The Entrepreneur of the Year • The Outstanding Personal Achievement Award • The SME of the Year Award • The Best New Business Award • The E-commerce Award • The Sustainability Award • The Innovation Award • The Marketing Initiative Award • The Creative Design Award

numerous national awards for her entrepreneurial achievements, gaining coverage in business sections of national newspapers like The Times and The Daily Telegraph and trade publications such as The Grocer. These award wins boosted the company’s image with its customers and potential customers and the presentation evenings proved excellent networking opportunities.” Ever seen companies winning awards and thought ‘we do it better than that’? If so then you need to be putting yourself in for awards too. As the saying goes ‘you have to be in it to win it’ and if you don’t feel comfortable doing it yourself then employ someone from outside to look at your businesses attributes and help write entries for you. Anna has kindly agreed to provide an entry writing service for businesses who feel that they might need a little extra help. To book please call 01778 421420. For those of you not entering the awards then please do nominate your favourite businesses. This could be a shop, restaurant or pub that has provided you with amazing service, a professional firm who has gone above and beyond to help you out or a local tradesman that has truly delivered what you needed. Remember the best way to help these companies and ensure the market continues to flourish in the region is to help them by telling other people how wonderful they are! Details of the awards and how to enter can be found at www.local-living-business-awards.co.uk • Entries should be submitted by post to: Local Living Business Awards, 13 Cherry Holt Road, Bourne, Lincs, PE10 9LA or at nominations@local-living-business-awards.co.uk Good Luck!

MANTON TO BROOKE AND BACK This is an easy and delightful walk that has just about everything – ridges, grand views, tranquil villages, rivers, even a deserted village Martinsthorpe Martinsthorpe is a deserted village. Only one building remains on the site amidst what appears to be a jumble of earthworks, but was once home to a hamlet of about 70. There is an interpretation board as you leave the site on the far side just over the cattle crossing, which is worth looking at.

Park in the road leading down to the Horse & Jockey at Manton, on the west end of the village; walk along the road to the main Oakham/ Uppingham Rd. Cross carefully and join a bridleway on the other side that heads due west, through the deserted village of Martinsthorpe and thence to the main Brooke Rd. You will know that you have come to the deserted village when you spot a recently renovated stable block and significant earthworks On reaching the main Brooke Rd, turn right, enter the village and bear right at the junction, with the church then in front of you; continue on down the road to the left of the church; over the River Gwash and then take a right turn along a bridleway This path then takes you almost due east towards Gunthorpe; as it approaches Gunthorpe, it turns in to a metalled track; do not go through the farmyard, the track goes through a gate 30 yards to the right, and then behind Gunthorpe Hall, with their stables The path takes off west across the field on the other side of the Hall, leaving the Hall directly behind you; you pass through a wood and reach the railway line; cross carefully via a pedestrian level crossing On reaching the main (busy) road turn right; stay on the left verge, until in a few minutes you join up with the main Rutland Water cycle circuit; stay on this back to Manton and the pub.

Lighting Styles – suppliers of specialist lighting products and designs Lighting is an essential part of any interior design scheme. If a lighting scheme is well designed it can transform the mood of a space turning dull and dreary into a warm and welcoming atmosphere. You do not need a huge budget to obtain results but you will require some assistance to undertake what can be a complicated technical task. Lighting Styles provides different types of lighting for use throughout the home and garden. They are an independent lighting specialist who learnt the art of lighting design through hands on experience in museums, galleries and public spaces. All the staff at Lighting Styles share the belief that every space can be lit effectively, within a budget, and without compromising on style and performance. Advice is given on how to choose the right design of light fittings to reflect and enhance the style of your home, be it traditional or contemporary. Much of the mood and atmosphere of good lighting is determined not so much by the fixture but by the light source itself. Guidance is given on where to position lighting and which type of light provides the best solution, whether it is tungsten, fluorescent, LED or low-voltage halogen. If you have plans to undertake a building project or refurbishment, Lighting Styles can work with you. They will help create a lighting design that reflects your needs and provides the necessary information for your electrician or designer from first fix through to completion. What’s new in Pensions
Oven Fairy
Kerry Hilliard of Stephenson Smart & Co answers questions about the recent changes in pensions’ legislation which is aimed at encouraging people to save for retirement.
Did your oven get heavily used over the Christmas holiday period? Great food but the odd spill in the oven and on the surfaces that is proving very stubborn? Well Oven Fairy is here to give your oven a thorough deep clean. They can bring it back to a level of sparkliness that you haven’t seen since the day it first arrived in the house. One contented customer commented: “When I came back into the kitchen, and saw how much better my Aga was looking I grinned with pleasure – it was like an old friend had suddenly got twenty years younger.” They also do lots of other kitchen appliances, including microwaves, hobs, fridges, extractors and BBQs. • Visit www.ovenfairy.co.uk to find out more, or call Nick Robins on 01572 767678 or email him at nick@ovenfairy.co.uk
What is the change to workplace pensions? For the first time, employers will be required to enrol eligible employees automatically into a workplace pension scheme. The changes came into force in October 2012 and will initially affect only the largest employers. Over time more employers will be phased in to the scheme with all expected to join by 2018. Who is eligible? Employees working in the UK will automatically be enrolled if they are aged between 22 and the state pension age, and earn more than £8,105 per year. Initially, a minimum contribution of 1% (including tax relief) of the employees pay will be automatically invested into the scheme and employers must contribute an additional 1%. These contributions are gradually set to rise to 5% from the employee and 3% from the employer. Can I opt out? Employees will have the right to opt out, but if they haven’t done this within one month of enrolment then the contributions already paid will not be refunded. Employers must not encourage employees to opt out of the scheme and any employees that have left will automatically be enrolled again after 3 years. What do I need to do if I am an employer? If you are an employer who already provides a workplace pension scheme, you will need to check that the scheme meets the new requirements. Those employers who do not already have a qualifying scheme will need to find a suitable pension provider or use the governments NEST (National Employment Savings Trust) scheme. • For more information and help contact Stephenson Smart & Co Tel: 01733 343275 or visit www.stephensonsmart.com
Orangehouse Wins National Award
Local company Orangehouse Renewables recently won the Best Home Energy Efficiency Solution at the prestigious National Home Improvement Council Awards 2012. The award was presented at a ceremony in London by Lord Dykes. The Stamford-based company specialises in supplying heat pumps and home energy efficiency systems. Heat pumps collect energy from the air or ground to provide efficient heating and hot water for new or existing buildings that usually have not got mains gas. Alex Driver said, “We’re all really delighted to have won. The prize-winning installation was a ground source heat pump that heats the house, hot water and hydrotherapy pool for our disabled client. We’ve had a busy year and next year is getting booked up with heat pumps, solar systems, and a range of energy efficiency solutions for homes and businesses.” • For further information please call 01780 490095 or visit www.orangehouse.co.uk STAMFORD LIVING FEBRUARY 2013

To Glass, or not to Glass, that is the question? A Conservatory, an Orangery, a Garden Room, call them what you will, the appeal of adding another room to your house that is seemingly half inside, half out is proving more popular than ever. Antonia Scott takes a look at the latest trends
J and L Ball Interiors J and L Ball Interiors (tel: 01780 481416 www.jandlball.co.uk) have been based in Stamford for the past six years and have a wide range of blinds and shutters suitable for all styles of conservatories. Blinds help keep your conservatory cool by reflecting heat and reducing glare in summer whilst maintaining warmth and comfort in winter and giving your conservatory an air of elegance. What trends are we going to see in 2013? “We have just launched a stylish new conservatory shading solution called ‘ InShade sails’ which are made from an exclusive solar control fabric. They are low maintenance as they can be washed in a washing machine and the lightweight stretch fabric doesn’t require any ironing and the sails can be replaced immediately when still damp. We have recently installed them at Stamford Garden Centre’s café in Great Casterton where they are greatly admired.” What changes have you seen over the last 5 years? “It’s not just country houses where the addition of a conservatory is becoming ever popular, but more frequently town houses and flats are making the most of their ‘bijou’ outside space by utilising every inch and creating light airy premium living spaces that are then made cosy, yet contemporary by adding blinds.”
18
Orchard Conservatories Orchard Conservatories (tel: 01780 753 343 www.orchardwindows.co.uk) have been trading for over 10 years and are one of the leading suppliers of Conservatories in Stamford. What trends are we going to see in 2013? “Solar controlled, self-cleaning glass roofs in various colours make up about 90% of our current conservatory installations, as they give the best of both worlds, they keep the heat locked into the conservatory during the colder months and help keep them cool in the warmer months, along with A rated Frames and Glass for maximum energy efficiency. “Many of our clients are choosing our Aluminium Bi folding door systems to really open up the whole space and link the conservatory with the garden. Under floor heating is also really popular with its fully controllable thermostatic control system. We are also the only local suppliers and installers of the IX250 Aluminium Orangery roof system that enables us to get away from the conventional steel and timber construction methods and meets all current building regulations.” What changes have you seen over the last 5 years? “There has been a big shift towards our Orangeries over the last few years, although they are a more costly project, they offer more of a complete usable space, with our Glass Lantern roofing systems and Bi folding doors, they make great family and entertaining spaces.” QKS Home QKS Home (tel: 01780 756 666 www.qks-ltd.co.uk) are based in Stamford and have been established for over 32 years gaining extensive experience in dealing with Heritage sites and Grade 1 & 2 listed buildings, where architectural sensitivity is paramount. Design flexibility is a crucial feature of their service and in addition to the traditional styling associated with older buildings they can also offer exciting possibilities for more contemporary projects. One of their newest Orangery designs is being installed in their Cherryholt Lane showroom, plus a beautiful example of an Oak Hardwood Conservatory.

What trends are we going to see in 2013? Nick Clipston, owner of QKS says, “An uptake in using different materials and a move away from the more traditional colours is definitely happening. Dark grey is now one of our most popular colour requests. Also, oak hardwood has become increasingly more popular and a trend that I believe will continue as it’s a natural material that suits older properties as it weathers well over the years to age with the rest of the house. What changes have you seen over the last 5 years? “More people are choosing to add a Conservatory to upgrade their house by giving them more room, as opposed to moving to a bigger property. Our Fine Hardwood and PVCu Conservatories not only offer a solution to that much longed for extra space, but will also improve the exterior, bringing worthwhile benefits in terms of the investment made in your property. About 75% of the Conservatories and Orangeries we are now building are to extend the existing kitchen to create a larger year round open plan living aspect.” Vale Garden Houses Vale Garden Houses (tel: 01476 564 433 www.valegardenhouses.com) are based in Grantham and with over 30 years experience, are experts in designing traditional Conservatories and Orangeries, sympathetic to the age and aesthetics of the house it is adjoining. They are proud to be the only conservatory company to be working in partnership with the National Trust and since 2003 have created three special designs each inspired by a different architectural period and style. What trends are we going to see in 2013? “People seem to be opting for more comfort to their Conservatories and our new “Interiors by Vale” collection has proved very popular, in particular our own modern paint range that complements traditional buildings. We’re also installing more Bi-folding doors as clients are wanting a large linking room to the garden, so the larger the aperture, the better.” What changes have you seen over the last 5 years? “Over the years, we have discovered clients
want to marry the traditional with a modern twist. People are experimenting more to personalise what was formerly a simple glass structure to create an extension of their home’s personality. Under floor heating has also revolutionised the ability to have an all year round room.” Natural Structures Natural Structures (tel: 01858 545 518 www.naturalstructures.co.uk) based in Tur Langton, on the way to Market Harborough, have been hand making bespoke oak buildings for over 20 years and have helped lead the revival of oak framing throughout the UK. What trends are we going to see in 2013? Simon Lewington, predicted this year’s trend would continue as previous years: “The most common thing that we are asked to do is to extend an existing property using natural materials and to maximise the natural light to form a functioning kitchen, dining and day room. The kitchen is now more than ever the heart of the house, and with the added room every one can eat, drink, relax and cook in one area of the home.
Alan Hooker, Owner of Heritage Conservatories (Tel: 01480 437774 www.heritageconservatories.com) What trends are we going to see in 2013? “I believe the move we have seen towards more sophisticated glass buildings using modern insulation techniques will continue as people look for more than a glorified greenhouse for their Leisure rooms.” What changes have you seen over the last 5 years? “At Heritage we realised around 15 years ago that the desire for light and airy living space permanently open to the main building was not always best served by the use of a pure conservatory due to the seasonal extremes that affected their usage. To address this we started designing buildings with lots of glass but that complied with building regulations thus enabling them to become part of the main living area rather than a separated outer building. This has become a general trend at the higher end of the market and these buildings have been given the name tag of an ‘Orangery’.”
What changes have you seen over the last 5 years? “It’s an evolution of the kitchen, going from a one function room to a 3 function room. As you add the functions you need more space, and that’s where we come in.” STAMFORD LIVING february 2013

MOT OR ING
Fuel Economy One of the key criteria for motorists when deciding which car to buy - new or used - is fuel economy. Ashley Martin considers what to watch out for
I
t is hardly surprising that fuel economy is such an important factor with pump prices close to record levels - and likely to increase further in 2013 - and the RAC’s Cost of Motoring Index highlighting that fuel accounts for almost 22% of average annual new car expenditure and almost a third of used car costs. It is therefore extremely relevant for potential buyers, when researching which vehicle to buy, to compare manufacturers’ claimed MPG performance. After all, not only should a car with good fuel economy deliver more wallet-friendly motoring than one with inferior MPG, but the key figure correlates to a model’s carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions, a number that is directly relevant to how much road tax (Vehicle Excise Duty) is paid – and, if a company car driver, benefit-inkind tax. So the key question is just how accurate are the manufacturers’ figures? The answer would appear to be in many cases ‘not very’ from research by consumer publication What Car? and website Honestjohn. Manufacturers calculate MPG - urban, extra urban and combined - figures for their cars by running them in a laboratory at an ambient temperature of 20-30 degrees Celsius on a rolling road from a cold start. The cars tested, in accordance with European Union regulations,

The urban cycle test is carried out first and consists of a series of accelerations, steady speeds, decelerating and idling. Maximum speed is 31 mph, average speed 12 mph and the distance covered is 2.5 miles. It is followed by the extra urban test and consists of roughly half steady-speed driving and the remainder accelerations, decelerations, and some idling. Maximum speed is 75 mph, average speed is 39 mph and the distance covered is 4.3 miles. The combined MPG figure, which is the one most commonly quoted by dealers and in publications, is the average of the two parts of the test, weighted by the distances covered in each part. Given the scientific nature of the testing it is therefore hardly surprising that in real world motoring it is difficult, and virtually impossible, for drivers to replicate manufacturers’ claimed MPG. What Car? says that ‘good’ fuel economy is achieved if in real world motoring a driver gets to within 15% of the published combined cycle figure, while a car achieving below that percentage would be considered ‘poor’ in the MPG stakes. Meanwhile, HonestJohn (www.honestjohn. co.uk) has calculated that the discrepancy between official laboratory quoted fuel economy figures and real world motoring - taking
MPG Official MPG 58.9 62.8 54.3 65.7 54.8 61.4 70.3 83.1 44.3 58.9 42.3 50.4 42.1 52.0 30.9 31.7 46.3 54.3 44.5 47.9 36.5 39.7 53.1 56.5 36.7 39.2 56.6 65.7 account of individual driving styles, vehicle load, traffic conditions, wind resistance etc. - is collectively costing UK drivers £4.45 billion a year. The figure is based on MPG data supplied by more than 30,000 drivers at the wheel of a wide cross-section of makes and models. On average, HonestJohn calculated that a car only achieved 88% of its official MPG figure, forcing drivers to spend around an extra 2p per litre every time they filled their fuel tanks. Improving fuel economy not only makes financial sense, but it makes environmental sense. All drivers can do their bit by training themselves to drive smarter and by ensuring their vehicle is in tip-top condition (see top tips panel). Meanwhile, examples of MPG figures obtained by What Car? in road testing cars on a 50-mile route using specialist fuel economy measuring equipment are shown in the chart above. Top tips to save fuel • Ensure tyres are inflated to the correct manufacturer recommended pressure • Ensure the vehicle is serviced at recommended intervals • Remove unnecessary vehicle weight (such as unused roof boxes and roof bars) • Stay at or within the speed limit. Driving at 80 mph uses 25% more fuel than at 70 mph, driving at 70 mph uses 9% more fuel than at 60 mph and up to 15% more fuel than at 50 mph • Drive smoothly - avoid harsh accelerating and braking • Change gear at 2,500 rpm in petrol cars and 2,000 rpm in diesel cars • Use ‘block gear changing’ - for example move from third to fifth as soon as possible • If likely to be at a standstill for more than three minutes switch off the engine • Many of today’s cars have stop-start - don’t sit with your foot on the clutch

Sports Update We introduce a new regular sports column this month, with the aim of raising awareness of sports and sportspeople locally. Our correspondent is Bob Feetham, previously Chairman of Stamford AFC and owner of the Rutland Times. He has had a lifelong passion for sport
New men’s captain at Greetham Golf New Year brought a flurry of new captains around the golf courses - and it was good to see popular Trevor Smith taking over the men's role at Greetham. Stamford-born, the 44-year-old is well known for his prowess both as a golfer and footballer. The right-sided midfielder enjoyed 37 years in local football and made around 550 appearances for Blackstones across several spells. He was also with Alan Day's Spalding United when they won the UCL Premier Division title; St Neot's, where he was part of the team which reached the FA Vase quarter final; and Southern League
Rushden and Diamonds in the mid 90s. As a golfer, he became a Greetham member 15 years ago and has made steady progress to a handicap of 2. He holds the course record of 67, set last summer. He has taken the club title four times and was a member of Greetham's South Lincs League winning team. Snooker is another favourite and Trevor has a top break of 75. He works as a regional sales manager with heating specialists, the GDC Group. Trevor and ladies’ captain, Sheila Douty, have named the neo-natal baby care unit at Peterborough Hospital as their chosen charity.
Sporting snippets Much activity for Stamford AFC at the end of 2012, chairman Chris Rivett successfully leading the search for a high profile non-league personality as manager. Wayne Hatswell is the new man and he takes up his first managerial appointment with a 21-year-playing career behind him. He made 488 league appearances with 11 senior non league clubs, including Forest Green Rovers, Oxford United, Kidderminster Harriers, Rushden and Diamonds, Cambridge United and Newport County. Oxford and Cambridge were among those to bring him in on transfer, Oxford said to have paid as much as £42,000. “This is a fantastic opportunity,” he commented. Stamford and District Indoor Bowls Club continues to go from strength to strength. A record entry of nearly 100 bowlers took part in their recent Mick Owens Trophy Tournament held at the club’s impressive Exeter Gardens headquarters. Christine and Alan Barnes and Carol and Bob Warters won the competition. Founded in 1991, the club now has 500 members, is open every day - and new members are welcome to sample the excellent facilities. Contact: 01780 756452.
You’ve heard the fisherman’s tale about the one that got away! Well here’s one that didn’t. Stamford angler Russ Green has taken a monster 78lb 8oz mirror carp from his favourite French water, Rainbow Lake, just south of Bordeaux. A huge fish, yes, but dwarfed when fishing pal Mark Adams took a world record common carp of 92lb! Another friend, William Bordley, had fish of 73lb, 67lb, 56lb, 44lb and three thirties! “We had a wonderful fortnight’s fishing,” enthused Russ, a 38-year-old electrical project manager. “It’s a round trip of 1,600 miles but worth every minute of the journey”. “We go twice a year,” added Russ.

WET WEATHER We’ve had an excess of it, so Sue Lee and Jean Orpin have been exploring this subject with people working in the countryside Farmers and the Countryside
“… about Nov 6 came much the wettest season I ever knew … vast and almost continual floods, the Fens & other low countries drown’d, much stock, grain & hay destroy’d in such places, and wheat seed time hinder’d in most places, and it continued wet … to the beginning of January.” Except for the spelling, this could describe the end of 2012. It is actually an account of the winter of 1770-71 from the Journal of Thomas Barker whose home throughout his life (1722-1809) was Lyndon Hall in Rutland. His earliest observations of the weather were made when he was just 11yrs old and from his teenage years onwards he made daily records of barometric pressure, temperature, wind and rainfall. From 1777 to 1798 his figures were regularly reported to the Royal Society and are still used by climatologists.
With classic understatement, one farmer told us, “The farm doesn’t look at all pretty” – nor does the countryside. Our area fared better than some parts of England but still the countryside around Stamford was much affected by the weather at the end of 2012. Farmers along the Welland have been used to flooding but waterlogged land is worse and this is what everyone has had to contend with. Standing water is not conducive to planting or growth. Some farmers have abandoned their usual winter planting and those who did plant have seen crops damaged or stunted, then targeted by pests like pigeons, whose own food sources are scarce. For spring sowing, seed is going to be expensive. The rhyme says it all: The conditions last year meant a poor potato Whether the weather be fine, crop which was compounded by the difficulties of Or whether the weather be wet, harvesting and storing such that some farmers National Trends We’ll weather the weather, may stop growing potatoes. At least one local farm Barker’s work in the 18thC was valuable to those Whatever the weather, has a big hole in their animal feed stocks from the who began to compile long term data to study Whether we like it or not. failure of the maize crop. The dark, wet conditions also climatic patterns. Colder and warmer trends have meant hay and silage production was down so fodder been identified, however extremes of weather are more random. The wettest November recorded was is in short supply. Parasites thrive in wet weather which 1852, the wettest December 1876; however it may be no is another potential problem for livestock farmers however they anticipate that hugely increased feed bills will be the biggest surprise that both months have several entries in the top problem in 2013. 10 of the 21stC. The probable explanation is that there has been a There will of course be a knock-on effect for everyone as produce slight increase in temperature overall and warmer air can absorb more becomes scarce and prices rise. As farming costs go up so does the cost moisture. When we think there can’t be any more up there to come down, of food. there is! Climatologists have also identified an increasing number of days of ‘extreme rain’ over the last 50 years.
Last Year It was so dry at the beginning of 2012 that we had hose-pipe bans and locally there were concerns that trees were unstable due to lack of moisture. This was followed by virtually every month recording above average rainfall. In Leicestershire, twice as much rain fell as in the previous year. June was phenomenally wet, the silage and harvest months were badly affected and the year concluded with rain, rain, rain. Stamford Meadows flooded 3 times and 2012 achieved the title of Wettest Year in England.
The Future
Amidst all this gloom, remember that we have recovered from wet weather before. At the end of 1771, Thomas Barker was writing in his Journal: “… the wheat seed time was very fine, and the end of October, November and part of December were chiefly fair fine and mild, and the ground drier than usual at the time of year, and saved the fodder … .” Alison Pratt, at our local NFU, optimistically told us, “Farmers … keep farming as they know that nature usually evens things out and they’re hoping that 2013 is a better year than last year. Fingers are firmly crossed.”

EATING OUT
Food & Drink
Blake Johnston’s monthly wine and food column This month I have teamed up with Hannah Catt, the exceptional talent at The Fine Food Store, and the recipe is ‘Moroccan spiced mackerel with heritage beetroots and orange salsa’. The colours on the plate are sensational. Bright reds, yellows, pinks, oranges and greens, draped with crispy skinned mackerel and a shimmering salsa drizzled over the top. Hannah has gone to town on flavour with spices, black olives, and the rich sweetness of the beets all adding to the challenge of matching a wine. All the flavours are beautifully balanced, everything complementing the fish as the main star of the show, but with a lovely warm spicy bite at the end that lasts for ages. I straight away chose 2009 Domaine Ostertag, Gewürztraminer, Alsace, France £21.99. An old favourite that I was confident would deal with the spices in the dish perfectly and have enough acidity to cut through the rich, meaty, oily fish. My only worry was that the light aromatics of this variety would be overshadowed. On trying the wine before my meeting with Hannah, I was surprised that the wine was slightly more off-dry than I remembered and this surely would help to liven up to the beets. The match was perfect, completely coming into its own when matched with the fish. The acidity dealt with the oiliness of the fish perfectly, and the Gewürztraminer spice took the spices in Hannah’s recipe head on, leaving a beautiful balance on the palate. This wine (discounted by 15%) and recipe cards and tasting notes will be available at The Stamford Wine Company throughout February. • The Stamford Wine Company Ltd Tel: 01780 489269 / Mob: 07538 228 337 blake@thestamfordwinecompany.com

FOOD & DR INK
Good Lifers Justine and Jonathan Forbes Sarah Lyon meets an inspiring couple from Swaton who are creating converts to a community way of living Homegrown produce
J
ustine Forbes emits a radiant and healthy glow; a true reflection of the life style choices she and her husband Jonathan have made. After years of stressful city living with careers in banking, the couple chose to move to the very rural village of Swaton in Lincolnshire. Shortly after the migration north, almost 12 years ago, Justine was reading an article in Easy Living Magazine when she was inspired to organise and run a community project of her own. “I love the outdoors. I grew up in the country and there is something very relaxing about it. We live simply with what we produce ourselves,” says Justine. A few minutes’ conversation with Justine was enough to know that there was just something about her and her ethos for living that was worth making the journey to Swaton one Saturday morning to visit the community Hut where local producers bring their produce and baked goods to sell and barter over good conversation and home grown bacon butties. The Hut, more like a wooden cabin, was rebuilt ten years ago by money raised by the community and stands adjacent to the village church. Set against the backdrop of the splendid rural grounds of the neighbouring property, The Hut was built on land that was bought from the Church and is now run as a charitable trust. Neighbours, Susan and Colin, impressed by the shop and village ethos, moved from Dyke to discover that Justine and Jonathan were the ethos. Justine and Jonathan live a short walk from The Hut where they live and work their small holding. Here they raise sheep – Gloucester Old Spot cross Berkshire pigs, 40-60 exbattery hens – and grow all their own fruit and vegetables. “We put the pigs on the land to clear and plough while fertilising as they work. Hens are then put on the land before we seed and grow,” explains Justine. Justine has made a success of making her own Chirizo, salamis and air dried ‘Farmer’s Ham’ and smoked pheasant breasts. Daughter Bee has been raising bees and now oversees 9 colonies. Her honey is extracted from the honeycomb and only sold at The Hut on a Saturday morning. She has been creating beeswax candles and experimenting with producing her own lip salves and creams
Bee and Justine Forbes outside The Hut
outside of studying for A Levels. “The Hut was the catalyst for our venture into bread baking,” says community baker Martin. Martin and partner Jeff were originally home bakers providing wonderfully crusty artisan breads made with flour from Maud Foster Mill in Boston for The Hut on a Saturday morning. Their bread making, says Martin, “has gone up a notch” since selling at The Hut where business has morphed into supplying bread to Woodlands Farm in Boston for their box scheme. Justine makes sausage rolls using only the best ingredients (sausage meat from her own pigs) and home grown and cured bacon for the crusty bread rolls made by Martin for the Hut’s Saturday morning breakfast option. Martin’s crusty loaves of bread, almond croissants, Danish pastries and pain au raisin are freshly baked and prepared for the busy flow of
Martin’s breads
community supporters who meander their way through the Hut for a bit of bartering or buying. Liz, another village resident, produces Peppers Lane pure virgin cold pressed rapeseed oil. The Hut is where ideas are formed and there is talk about acquiring a community goat. There has already been a spot in the village pinpointed for a dairy whereby the community will be involved in the making of goat’s cheese. The ideas keep flowing and growing and moving out into the wider community. “Creating converts takes time,” say Justine. “Turning up to things takes time but it gradually starts to work and we have over the years seen a positive shift towards community living.” “The Hut is used to the max,” says baker Martin. There is a bar on a Friday night and sales from this and the Saturday café and shop are going to fund an extension to The Hut next year. There is a book group who meet monthly, a cinema club for children with a drop down cine screen affixed to the ceiling of the hut, plant sales in spring time and celebration lunches and suppers at special times throughout the year. • Justine gives talks on Living the Small Holders Life to local groups. One of Stamford’s best kept secrets Dining out at a training restaurant may not be everyone’s first choice for a culinary treat - images of clumsy waiters, basic dishes and the sound of plates clattering to the floor perhaps more like it. But in fact, it is one of Stamford’s best kept secrets by locals in the know and an opportunity to sample the delights from the next generation of top chefs. The gallery Restaurant at new college Stamford has been creating chefs of the highest calibre for many years. Supervised by chefs holding craft guild of chefs membership and whose experience includes catering for the Queen and Olympics, it is little wonder our graduates have gone onto achieve great things; catering for William and Kate’s wedding, working at claridge’s and a place in the semi-finals of BBc2’s masterchef the professionals, last year. Open to the public and offering the finest gourmet dining in the evening and delightful lunchtime
offerings, dishes are all freshly prepared using local and seasonal produce. Restaurant manager marie-pierre will be on-hand, giving waiting staff a gentle steer on the intricacies of fine dining to ensure an unforgettable dining experience. There might be a lingering moment of hesitation as your student waiter gathers their thoughts but really, that’s the added pleasure. it’s the opportunity to be part of the students’ journey - and one that might require a dip into the savings to enjoy again in the future.

STA M FOR D PE OPLE
Rufus Schoon: The Alpaca Man
Harjit Gammon takes a trip down the road to a strange, other world reality (a corner of Peru or Chile in Belmesthorpe), to get up close and personal with Rufus Schoon’s alpaca herd
M
any may think alpaca and llama farming unusual. Certainly these lovely yet strange creatures (imaginatively described as something of a cross between a sheep and a goat with a touch of giraffe, by a child) are still relatively alien in the English countryside. Though I’m sure, welcome over the endless fields of rape seed which might otherwise cover this area of our immediate countryside. To this promising mix Rufus adds a uniquely unconventional way of living. He and his wife, Rachel, share their ‘farm’ with no fewer than five dogs, four cats, several roosters and a brood of free roaming hens. So far so ordinary, you might think. So it was that I approached their homestead one cold, damp grey morning, a fine drizzle dismally descending. Arriving at the farm gate, I proceeded up an unmade dirt track as instructed. Approaching a second bolted gate a Rhodesian Ridgeback hurtled towards me. What to do? I wasn’t expecting this. And, no evidence of a farmhouse to boot! Will he savage me? Might he run away? Make decision to bolt out of the car, unbolt the gate and dash back to safety in a nanosecond. Of course have to repeat the whole thing to bolt the gate again once on the other side! Mission accomplished I drive up towards what appear to be a series of ramshackle sheds, concluding this must be a working area only, dreading the repeat performance if I’m in the wrong place. Pat self on back for wearing gumboots and a big warm coat – mud everywhere, freezing cold. I head towards one of the sheds shouting hallo, to be met by a striding, hand extended, Rufus; looking
46
every inch the South American gaucho. My eyes travel up from his Dubarry boots, taking in the leather trousers and a fur lined jerkin, to a swarthy face topped by a shock of curly black hair and, alight with a wide beaming smile. I follow as he leads me to a shed, through a makeshift entrance into a narrow passage. It turns and, past a blanket door we emerge into what can only be described as something akin to a Bedouin tent, affixed to a caravan. A huge raised platform dominates the space (I note it is constructed with pallets out of the corner of my eye). Positioned opposite a wood burner and draped in various rugs and blankets it soon emerges this is the preserve of the dogs. Astonishingly the room is deliciously warm. A pot warms on the burner, and in a corner I notice two spinning wheels. Returning to the alpacas and Rufus, it is clear from our conversation that he is a complex man with wide ranging interests and talents. At once a part of the modern world, yet also powerfully drawn to an altogether simpler and more unconventional existence devoid of the unnecessary clutter and accoutrements of modern life. Coupled with a humble, simple ( many might say almost punitively spartan), back to the earth, self-sufficient manner of living and an alternative farming passion, raising alpacas and Llamas, he proficiently embraces an altogether different world shipping vending and catering systems worldwide from his Barnack based electronics company, Ram Systems. He owns, together with his wife Rachel, around 20 acres of land, a home, now let, in Peterborough and is in the process
of acquiring premises to house the team of hand knitters who will complete his ambition to produce hand knitted, Made in England garments and accessories from his alpaca herd fibre. A natural product whose qualities he enthusiastically espouses - soft, warm, hypoallergenic and lanolin free and thus ideally suited to asthmatics and skin allergy sufferers as well as appealing to a wider market for its supreme softness. The herd consists of three llamas, distinguished from alpacas by their larger size and a straighter fibre typically suited to matting, and 25 alpacas. The alpaca is a much smaller animal he tells me, with a finer fibre, considered to be on a par with cashmere. Rufus’s interest in farming originated in his early childhood; he was raised in Trinidad until the age of 11 by an aunt, when he joined his parents and a younger brother in England. Looking for an animal he could farm without slaughter he alighted upon alpacas. Not bred for market, an alpaca can live for 20-25 years so, like his alternative way of life, are more than just a job. An intrinsic part of the appeal of these animals for Rufus is their calm and peaceful yet energising qualities. They have a presence he tells me. They all have names and are distinguishable herd animals capable of a range of emotions from pining if alone, to spitting and arguing in a group; though generally well behaved. Started in 2009, Rufus’s alpaca venture has a nice symmetry and continuity with the wool trading past of Stamford. I wish him every success.
