Join the conversation
For those of you who enjoy social media - or would like to explore it some more – or still need persuading that it could be of any benefit - we hope that you will join the Stamford conversation on our Twitter or Facebook page. You will find it to be an interesting way to stay in touch with what’s happening in Stamford on a daily basis, following any local campaigns that are active, keeping up with the local sports scores, seeing what new shops are coming to the town or just finding out what’s on people’s minds. It will help keep you ‘in the loop’. I am the author of our Twitter account @LocalLivingUK. In the last month I have broken stories about several shop openings, been the first to publish a food review of a new restaurant and posted many updates on the flooding meadows a few weeks back. Helen Walton, our Ad Director, is the author of our Facebook page LIKE bestlocalliving. She is incredibly enthusiastic about all the different products and services that Stamford has to offer, and is also a passionate supporter of various charities including Alternatives. We look forward to your joining the conversation.

t Energy, ‘Jean Genie’ Sarah will make your jeans’ shopping experience easy, not a chore! “Under one roof we have a huge selection of all styles and colours. Coming in for spring are pastels, tie dye, neons and patterned jeans. We are experts in both men’s and ladies jeans! – We are determined to find the perfect pair of jeans for you! Our top tips are as follows: • Ignore the size on the label, all jeans are different and your shape will determine the style that’s right for you. • At least two pairs of jeans in your wardrobe will give you options – don’t wear one pair to death! • Shop locally where an alteration service will provide you with jeans at the perfect length for the footwear you intend your jeans to be worn with. • Jeans need to fit snuggly, so buy them slightly tighter and they will give a bit.” Marion, owner of Attic agrees it’s all about finding a fit that flatters.” “We chose our 3 main jeans brands with this in mind. We always try the jeans on when we are buying so we can gauge exactly how they fit. Mac jeans are ‘probably the most comfortable jeans in the world’. The denim contains a higher proportion of elastane, which means they hug the body and don't go baggy after wearing. They are cut to with a slightly higher waist and a slim or straight leg. Tommy Hilfiger’s American preppy look highlights are cotton jeans in bright red, pink, orange and blue jeans. “Esprit has a dedicated denim division and quickly responds to new trends. They deliver a new Collection in store each month and our current favourites are the floral printed slim leg jeans and the dotty denim. “

Debbie at Seaweed has found that the NYDJ American brand is becoming well known. “The jeans are best recognized for their lift and trim flattering cut, with a higher rise – more colours are coming in for Spring/ Summer.” Annabelle at Lulu stocks Hudson jeans. “The intelligent cut of these jeans ensures a perfect bottom lift – the back of the jeans is stretched before the pockets are sewn on, giving the magic lift! Look out for coloured jeans. Sarah B from Aromatica ( 07912 573859) has used Lily Lolo’s mineral make-up and T. Le Clerc’s range to create natural Spring like make-up for Harriet Crane and Harriet McBain-Alan. Many thanks for modeling for me. Snow Designs and Interiors Snow Designs, the new design & interiors shop in St Mary’s St, is a revelation. It is run by Camilla Snow, with notable support from her family – her brother restores items, her mum is a designer, and her dad is a builder who often comes across interesting stuff such as the kitchen table currently in store that came originally from an old school laboratory. “Make do and mend” has always been our philosophy as a family”.
Could your child be a ‘Face of Stamford’?
Stamford Living is collaborating with the very talented Lyndsay Ford of Shutterbox Photography, Stamford’s new, prestigious photography studio on North Street, and Bubble and Squeak, Stamford’s very popular children’s wear shop, to bring you a photo competition to find the ‘Face of Stamford’. There are four categories, 0-1y, 1-3y, 4-6y, 7-11y. The winner from each will become the Face of Bubble and Squeak for 2013 and receive two seasonal outfits to be worn at two promotional fashion photo shoots, also all images from the fashion shoots and £100 bundle from the in-store sitting. The runner-up from each category will receive a £30 Shutterbox Photography voucher and £30 Bubble and Squeak voucher. There is a £5 entrance fee for which you’ll receive a complimentary 7x5” print of the photo that you choose to enter into the ‘Face of Stamford’ competition. The Photo shoot will be hosted in Bubble and Squeak, 30 High Street over their 2nd birthday celebration week – Friday 29th (Good Friday), Saturday 30th March and Wednesday 3rd - Sat 6th April. • To pre-book a slot, you can pop into Bubble and Squeak, contact Lyndsay via her website www.shutterboxphotography.co.uk, message via Bubble & Squeak facebook pages or come along on the day!
Broad St Practice celebrates its 10,000th patient Incredibly, the 10,000th patient has recently been treated at the Broad St Practice since it was founded in 1996; and to celebrate, Perry Westbrook & Anthea Bentley decided to award a prize of a £100 of vouchers to spend at Jim’s Yard Restaurant in Stamford. The lucky winner was Iddy Jones, a resident of Stamford, an HGV driver and in his spare time also in the wedding car service business. He had pulled a ligament at work and was in agony when he called the Practice. He had walked past many times but never imagined he would need to services of an osteopath or really knew what was involved. They could squeeze him in the same day he called. He was pleasantly surprised, finding everyone to be very friendly as well as highly professional. He was soon on the mend and able to get back to work. • Broad St Practice, 20/21 Broad Street, Stamford, PE9 1PG Tel: 01780 480889 www.thebroadstreetpractice.co.uk

The Coach House has a £18.50 3 course menu for Mother’s Day on Sunday 10th March; and on Easter Sunday 2 courses at £15 per person or 3 courses at £18.50. Some might know Camilla from the Saturday market and from her other successful business which is supplying slate tableware to restaurants, including Le Manoir aux Quat Saisons and Kettlers. Camilla describes her store as an ‘interiors emporium that offers an eclectic mix of contemporary and vintage homeware and gifts’. On the ground floor is a mix of furniture, accessories and unusual items, including an old pram, porthole mirrors etc. Downstairs she shows the latest work from local British designers, including artwork, clothes from Henia, ceramics and soft furnishings (Thread & Ink cushions). I was particularly struck by the ‘Uri Geller of cutlery’ – a designer who re-shapes forks into napkin rings, creating something very characterful. • 32 St Mary’s St, Stamford Tel: 01780 751551 www.camillasnowinteriors.com
Stamford Music Shop 50th anniversary The Stamford Music Shop celebrates 50 years of being at the heart of the local music community this year. In that time it has had only two owners; first Colin Gildon, who opened it back in 1963; and then Dave Hollands, who took it over from him in 2001. In the last decade it has expanded the stock and variety of instruments, and developed the instrument rentals side of the business. Also, Dave opened the second shop in St Peter’s St dedicated entirely to pianos and keyboards. This year there are plans to sponsor live music gigs in conjunction with Mama Liz’s and Marshall amplifiers, and continue to bring the local community of musicians together. But what makes the shop stand out in Dave’s view is the staff. “I have the best staff in the world,” he told SL. “We can’t get it right all the time, but we do our best. We aim to be the community hub for musicians.” • Stamford Music Shop, 11 St Mary’s Hill, Stamford PE9 2DP Tel: 01780 751275 www.stamfordmusicshop.co.uk STAMFORD LIVING MARCH 2013

BEFORE
Hair and beauty make-over Katie Rodway from Stamford is a hard-working mum to five year-old Isobel and two year-old Jack and is approaching her 40th birthday this month. Katie has been dieting with a the support of a group of three friends and now that she has lost weight, she was also ready and willing to have a hair and beauty makeover in the expert hands of Jayne and the team at Gerards. Katie normally ties her hair back in a ponytail during the day and wears the bare minimum of make-up. Her hair had been home coloured over a number of years and had lost its lustre and shine. Nicola from Gerards who is an expert in Aveda colour and also the Gerards wedding hair specialist, coloured Katie’s hair using warm caramel tones throughout the top section, complemented with deep richer copper tones. The technique applies the highlights first and then Nicola expertly painted between the foils. Aveda colours are 96% naturally derived so they actually nourish and condition the hair. The result was a deeply glossy, rich brown shade with shimmering accents. Jayne then took over to cut Katie’s hair, taking it from long and frazzled to a grown-up, sexy style which just hits her shoulders. Jayne re-graduated the hair to give it shape and bounce and then cut a fringe, following the natural shape of Katie’s hair and leaving it just below her strongly defined eyebrows. It was then blow dried in to a sleek, but naturally tousled shape, emphasising the natural volume. Jayne used Aveda smooth infusion before blow drying to give the hair texture, gloss and extra shine. Nicola then showed Katie how to create a simple but sophisticated “up do”, pinning her hair in to a side bun, which she pulled out gently with a tail comb so that it didn’t sit too closely to her head. She also released a few tendrils at the side to make it look natural and slightly undone. This gave Katie a really pretty evening style, which was perfect for the party she was attending on the day of her makeover. The finishing touch was Aveda make-up applied by Anneli, who gently defined Katie’s brows to define their shape and then used a mineral tinted moisturiser on her face, followed by a light liquid foundation, set with translucent powder. Katie’s striking eyes were emphasised with a cacao brown illumination on the upper eyelid and lemonspice and aura on the lower part of the eyelid, complemented with lashings of black mascara. Katie’s cheekbones were emphasised using a plum touch blusher and the finishing touch was a peachy gloss in juneberry on her lips.
Katie commented: “I haven’t had this much pampering since my wedding day; it really couldn’t have come at a better time and I am going to head in to 40 feeling much more polished and glamorous; thanks to Jayne and her team.”

Homefield Grange Bridget Steele visited Homefield Grange, a natural health Spa and Retreat situated in Rushton, Northamptonshire The Retreat offers packages for people looking to lose weight, detox and generally “get away from every day life” in a relaxing and therapeutic environment. I visited on a Tuesday lunch time and was able to experience a taster of the Retreat and sample a couple of treatments on offer. My afternoon started with a tour - The Grange is built round a courtyard and includes an indoor exercise area with a yoga studio, and treatment rooms. There is a large comfortable sitting room where guests congregate in the evening for talks and films, a dining room and kitchen where guests can help themselves to herbal teas and water during the day. As well as the usual beauty treatments and relaxing massages, there are specialised treatments such as Food Intolerance Testing, Colonic Hydrotherapy, Acupuncture and Live Blood Analysis. I was asked to fill in a detailed health questionnaire and sipped on a freshly made vegetable juice and tucked in to a delicious vegetable salad - there is no caffeine, alcohol, meat, fish or dairy food on the retreat - so whilst there is a strict regime, the focus is on fresh and wholesome food, with an emphasis on freshly made juices for detoxing. My first treatment was the food intolerance testing. This was able to pinpoint exactly where I could improve my diet by eliminating certain foods to avoid discomfort and getting the most nutritional benefit. I was then given the Live Blood Analysis, where my blood cells were shown moving about on a screen and given an insight into the cells. It was fascinating to see the cells “bobbing” about on a screen and understand what the different shapes of cells mean. A stay at Homefield Grange can be just for a weekend getaway, a five day break, or a full week - it is tailor made and guests are encouraged through their stay to attend group talks, exercise sessions and support each other, which has also meant many guests have made long-lasting friendships during their stay. • For more information contact Homefield Grange, Natural Health Spa, Manor Road, Rushton, Northants, NN14 1RH Tel: 01536 712219. www.homefieldgrangeretreat.co.uk

Win The Ultimate Pampering worth over £1,000!
Fitness is as important to spinal health as it is to your general wellbeing; the two things should not be mutually exclusive. People are becoming far more aware that having a healthy diet and doing some regular exercise will not only help them lose weight but also reduce illness and promote longevity. The incidence of Type 2 diabetes and obesity is dramatically on the rise due to poor diet and inactivity. With a little education and support they are problems that can be easily avoided. Just 10 minutes of brisk walking three times a day is enough exercise to provide enormous health benefits. Sarah, who runs the practice, is passionate about exercise and has always enjoyed keeping fit. She has spent years treating patients with back problems, giving them exercises and sending them on their way. Now as a qualified personal trainer as well as a Chiropractor she is able to combine her knowledge of physical mechanical problems with an understanding of health and fitness. She is able to offer different levels of training programs, ranging from weight loss to increased fitness to specific core training. She will provide a Chiropractic assessment before training begins to rule out any problems and tailor make the exercise program to each individual. • Contact Sarah: 07531 923107 e-mail: thompsonchiropractic@live.co.uk

Easter ideas
Alysia Anderson suggests different ways to enjoy Easter with family and friends Get crafty
How to make collage cards
Fill up some of those school holiday hours with Easter crafts. Decorating hard-boiled eggs is fun and you can use them for an egg hunt afterwards around the house or garden. Other ideas to keep the kids amused include making cardboard Easter bonnets, paper daffodils, pompom chicks or collage Easter cards. Colemans Art (01780 480635) has everything you need to get creative, including poster paints from £1.99, coloured card from 20p a sheet and a range of Easter-themed stickers. To make an Easter bunny out of felt, CallyCo (01780 753409) has Sass & Belle kits for £7.99 or pick your own selection of buttons, ribbons and fabrics from this trove of a shop. Two Little Birds (www.twolittle-birds.co.uk) also has sewing craft kits, starting from £5.95, suitable for children aged nine upwards. As well as instructions with diagrams, the kits contain pre-cut fabric, stuffing, ribbon for hanging, buttons and embroidery thread, in a choice of items and colours. For example, a handmade lavender heart or pin cushion in spring hues of pink and green would make a lovely Easter gift or decoration. For grown-ups who fancy some professional instruction, there is a twoday ‘design your own appliqué cushion’ course on 13 and 20 March from 9.30am to 2.30pm. The price of £50 includes materials, home-made cakes and a light lunch.
Old bits of wrapping paper, ribbon and string can be used to create unique Easter cards. Cut an egg shape from card then stick patterned paper all over it. Trim off any ragged edges. Make a bow from a piece of ribbon and stick it across the middle of the egg, tucking the ends behind. Stick the completed egg to a folded piece of cardboard to complete your Easter card. For an alternative design, cut out a chick shape from yellow paper and stick it on to folded card of a contrasting colour. Add a wing and beak cut from material or paper, a button or sticker for the eye and two lengths of knotted string to create the chick’s legs.

Burghley House Make the most of the opportunity to see daffodils, narcissi and spring bulbs in Burghley House’s usually private South Gardens, open this year from 16 March to 7 April; admission by donation. On 31 March, an Easter Egg Hunt takes place in the Gardens of Surprise. Find the hidden chick families to claim your chocolate egg. Entry is free with a House and/or Gardens ticket (www.burghley. co.uk/events). Other stately homes with stunning spring flower displays and children’s Easter trails include Belton House near Grantham (www.nationaltrust.org/belton-house) and Grimsthorpe Castle near Bourne (www.grimsthorpe.co.uk) which opens on 31 March. If you’d like to learn how to create a beautiful Easter table decoration or bouquet, professional florist Helen Jane (www. Helen Jane helenjanefloristry.co.uk) runs courses for groups of up to six people from her home in a converted barn in Glinton. There’s an evening course on 27 March for £40 and a morning workshop on 30 March for £60, including refreshments and materials. In Stamford, Sue’s Flower House (01780 753225) and Miss Pickering (01780 482961) can create beautiful Easter arrangements to bring the scents and colours of spring into your home.

Sinclairs Nicholas Rudd-Jones met with Christian Sinclair, the third generation head of the business, and chatted over a cup of coffee in Sam’s Place upstairs about the store’s history and its plans for the future Sinclairs in St Mary’s St has a venerable history going back many years. But what strikes you first on looking around today is just how design-led and contemporary the store is. “Our Stamford store will have been here 30 years next year,” Christian told me. “My father used to drive through Stamford on his way to London and he kept an eye on the site, which had previously been a drapers. It dates back originally to the 1720s and was originally a coaching inn.” Today the store is an emporium of houshold designer goods, from tableware to chinaware, kitchenware, rugs, bags, toys and accessories; even some antique furniture pieces in the far room. This mix of stuff gives it a character and individuality that sets it apart from other shops. But where Sinclairs has really moved forward in recent years has been its focus on leading designers, who typically design a whole range of products in several different categories. So there is a range of retro kitchen utensils and mugs from Orla Kiely, who also designs bedding, towels and even handbags. Next to her is the Nigella Lawson range of kitchenware, in dark colours and smooth lines. The design world is changing more quickly than in the past, and wheareas previously a household might stick with a particular style for many years, now they change or augment every few years. What categories have been doing well? “Well, a resurgence in home baking has meant an increased interest in our kitchenwares, We have noticed people becoming more creative and more discerning in terms of getting quality products that will last and help them to get the best results.” The range is impressive, including over a dozen designer toasters. And in keeping with the times, there’s also a giant cupcake tray. Another important category is bags, to which a lot of space is devoted at the back of the store. A very popular brand is the classic Longchamp Paris range of bags, which offers price points and fabrics from £50 to £500. There is something for everyone and the range is only available in this region at Sinclairs. And the staff are vital to the overall success of the business. A couple have been there since nearly the beginning. “It’s importent to have really committed and knowledgeable staff,” Christian reflected “who can point out to a cusomer the benefits and performance of a particular product. We are very lucky in the staff we have.” “We offer premium products that will last for years, but we also want Stamford people to fully appreciate that we are always very price competitive.” Take a look in March, as there will be several March promotions launched in the second half of the month. • Sinclairs, 11-12 St Mary’s St, Stamford PE9 2DE Tel: 01780 765421

Traditional Window Restoration Traditional Restoration is a small but well established family run local business. Set up in Leicester in 2003, they moved to Oakham in 2010 as they were already being asked to do work in the area, and wanted a different way of life for their two young boys. Over the last few years they have worked alongside local builders and architects on renovation projects and can supply references if required. Traditional Restoration aims to restore original timber windows to their full working order. They do this by removing any damaged wood and rot, and combining new quality timber with Repaircare resin to completely rejuvenate the look and quality of the windows. They can also repair timber columns, porches, steps, shutters... The list goes on, and they have never seen a job yet that cannot be carried out. As modern society worries about energy efficiency, traditional windows
20
are not always considered to be good in this area. One way of improving this is through one of their main areas of work, draught proofing. They can prevent draughts and rattling, thus reducing noise and dust levels. Installing draught proofing can also improve the sliding action of sash windows, whilst enhancing performance and comfort. Traditional Restoration specialises in the conversion of single glazing to double glazing without the need for replacing original windows or doors. In doing so you can keep the architectural character of the building and improve the energy efficiency at the same time, without the need for any costly replacements. If you would like a free no obligation quotation, or would like to talk to someone in person please contact James or Sally on 01572 720524 or 07841 527855 www.traditional-restoration.co.uk

Spotlight on Madeira Discovered in 1419 by Portuguese navigators, the magnificent island of Madeira is located some 560 kilometres off the West African coast. The mild, temperate climate on Madeira makes it ideal for a break at any time of the year and offers many places of historical interest and natural beauty, from small, undiscovered villages, churches and museums to immense mountains with lush plantations, flora and fauna. Funchal, the capital, is a bustling cosmopolitan town with a lively marina and working port, offering a wide choice of shops and restaurants in attractive tree-lined streets with cobbled footpaths. The centre of town is especially busy where 16th century streets attempt to cope with 21st century traffic! Thanks to the sub-tropical climate you will find a profusion of exotic flowers including wild camellias, mimosa, agapanthus, eucalyptus and hydrangeas to name but a few. The Botanical Gardens are well worth a visit. A cable car from Funchal rises high above the city to Monte where you can visit the twin towered Church of our Lady Monte, then return to Funchal by the
infamous wicker toboggans that speed over the cobbled streets. Visit the Avenida Arriaga 28, where you may taste the delights of Madeira’s famous wine: Sercial being the driest, Verdelho medium dry, Bual, medium sweet, and Malmsey, the sweetest. The island’s amazing levada irrigation system spans 2,500 kilometres stretching from the north to the south of the island. Easy to navigate paths run beside the gently sloping water channels giving walkers the ideal opportunity to explore the stunning countryside. Hotel standards are excellent, but aim for at least an official 4* rating. Best for tradition, charm and character and a favourite is the The Quinta Da Bela Vista, this Quinta is located in an elevated position with spectacular views over Funchal; a former manor house, it has been restored to a luxurious standard with attentive and discreet staff. Prices from £883.00 pp for a 7 night stay in May. The Pestana Casino Resort boasts an unrivalled position with views across the sea and mountains and offers superb value for money from £599.00 per person for 7 nights in April. Prices from £883.00 pp for a 7 night stay in May. For something a little more contemporary, The Cliff Bay offers a luxurious
and restful holiday in a superb location with beautiful gardens and a choice of restaurants and a stunning Spa from £978.00 per person in June. • If you would like a personal recommendation on all the different hotels available on Madeira, please contact Oundle Travel 01832 273600. www.oundletravel.co.uk
Property of the Month St Peter’s Vale, Stamford This stunning Grade II listed residence at the far end of Bath Row has just come on to the market. It is soaked in history, comprising a stone and slated Water Mill dating from 1634 with 18th and 19th century additions, imaginatively converted with respect to the original structures to provide extensive modern living accommodation. The original mill machinery and water wheels are in situ creating a great atmosphere and a tribute to an earlier industrial era. The property can be occupied as one larger dwelling, but part is currently used as a separate suite. There is undeveloped space on the ground floor which could make a stunning kitchen/dining room or a games/leisure room or a gym. The property includes 7 bedrooms, 3 bathrooms, a superb open plan living/ dining/kitchen area complete with original mill wheels, a second sitting room, 2 utility rooms, a workshop and garage all with modern facilities and including gas central heating and double glazing. In addition there is a large, partially boarded loft area with a beautiful 18th century shuttered dormer window with fantastic views over the roof tops of Stamford, which could be converted to provide further living space. To the front of the house is a courtyard providing off-road parking and access to the garage and house. To the rear is a south facing paved terrace overlooking the Mill Pond and original water wheel. From here a wooden footbridge gives access to a secluded south facing garden. Steps lead down

Wine of the Month with Blake Johnston
“So this month there is a slight change of plan, and the local ‘foodie’ I have chosen for the wine matching recipe is....ME! So it’s amateur month, but I have selected some fabulous produce from the good people at the Stamford Cheese Cellar and decided to tackle a recipe that always strikes fear into my heart, along with countless other culinary mortals out there; the Cheese Soufflé. ! To be precise, ‘Three Cheese Soufflé with Chives’, using Goat’s Cheese, Comte and Parmesan, all artisan cheeses from the aforementioned cheese HQ of Stamford. “Cracking through the golden crust (which rose proudly thank heavens!) you find a light, airy mousse-like consistency inside with a moist gooey centre that cries out for warm locally (or home...) baked bread – sourdough in this instance. “I am choosing a white wine with high acidity to cut through the creamy, cheesy body of this dish, and whenever goat’s cheese is in town I am immediately drawn to the Sauvignon Blanc grape, in this case, 2011 Sancerre Blanc, Les Epsailles £13.99. Sancerre is an appellation in The Loire, which is world famous for the production of its Sauvignon Blanc. This grape gives clean, crisp elegant flavours of gooseberry fruit, and grassy notes that sit beautifully alongside the herbs in this dish. Lovely and mineral with herbaceous flavours lingering on the finish. As usual, the recipe is available in store and the wine is reduced by 15%. • The Stamford Wine Company Ltd, St Mary’s St, Stamford. Stamford Beauty Stamford Beauty is about to move into wonderful new premises in St Mary’s Hill
Sarah Taylor says that in the last couple of years, since Stamford Beauty was founded in Silver Lane, the number of customers has grown and repeat business has flourished. So now it’s time for more space and more services. Sarah, who specialises in treatments, and Aga, who specialises in nails and has established a strong reputation for quality and creativity, are being joined by Claire, Louise and Annie to create a five-strong team. “We are really excited about our move,” Sarah told SL. “We will have so much more space, including a treatment room on the ground floor for easy access, a spray tanning room and a ‘couples’ room called the Welland Suite that will enable friends or partners to get treated at the same time and share their experiences. But above all we want to retain the personal service and passion that has made us stand out in the market.” The opening day will be Friday March 8th 10am-6pm, and everyone is very welcome to join them for a glass of wine and nibbles, and take a good look around. • Stamford Beauty, 15 St Mary’s Hill, Stamford, PE9 2DP Tel: 01780 757108
St Martins Antiques’ Caption Competition Winner This year’s St. Martins Antiques Christmas caption competition winner was Liz Dixon of North Luffenham. Her winning entry to fill Rudolf’s speech bubble was “My nose glows bright to reveal red hot deals.” Lucinda Silcock presented Liz with her £75 St. Martin’s Antiques gift voucher prize and Liz, with husband Eddie having already looked round the centre, spent it immediately on a ring and a hand coloured engraving of Normanton Hall.

Marram Gardens
“Gardening requires lots of water – most of it in the form of perspiration.” - Anon Good garden design relies on a well-balanced combination of flair, knowledge and experience of horticulture, landscape architecture and at times engineering. Then there’s straight forward personal taste. Antonia Scott met with some very green fingered people to find out what can be done to your own patch Bunny Guinness www.bunnyguinness.com As probably one of the most well known Gardeners in the area, Bunny is a font of knowledge on every aspect of Landscape Design. She specialises in creating gardens that exploit the potential of the space and are then tailored to the clients’ needs. Bunny’s numerous projects range from revamping hard-to-let housing spaces to private consultancy work, “I’m always looking to exploit the existing gems of the site and make sure it works with clients’ needs, budget and level of maintenance.” Much of her inspiration comes from travelling and seeing exciting and different structures and spaces to then adapt in her design work. “My advice would be to avoid the predictable and seek out unorthodox things – go to a Reclaimers’ Yard to search for one-off items or use one of the many good local craftsmen to make a bespoke shed or fencing. These things can make a huge difference to the framework of your garden before planting has even taken place. There are also some fantastic gardens locally to visit – Bas Clarke’s Garden at Geeston and Holywell are two of my favourite.”
28
Ken Rawson www.kenrawsongarden designs.co.uk Ken Rawson is a traditional gardener based in Easton-on-the-Hill; and perhaps one of the best examples of his design work is his own amazing back garden. With a specialisation for small spaces, Ken showcases the best of what he does for his own enjoyment. “In a small garden, everything counts, there’s no room for frippery. You have to work hard to create a pleasing space that’s not too cramped. There’s a misconception that every plant must be small, but this is not so – you should play around with height and larger dimensions to avoid creating a miniature village effect.” Ken’s inspiration comes largely from the landscape around him, in particular his love of woodlands. By studying Japanese gardens, he learnt how best to arrange plants and interpret shade gardening, understanding the positive and negative shapes. “Often it’s the simplicity of appreciating the surrounding green fields, blue skies and white clouds that can inspire a colour scheme.” Ken’s advice when designing your own garden is always, “think maintenance – if the client only has basic abilities, then keep things relatively simple and straightforward. I have been known to ask, ‘Can I see your gardening shoes?’ to get an idea of how keen a gardener they really are!” “Overall, a garden should be a retreat, to shut out the world’s worries and escape to. It’s your very own piece of land, so get out there and have some fun!”

MARRAM GARDENS www.marramltd.co.uk Marram Gardens are based in Stamford and have worked with numerous clients wanting to revamp their garden to complement both modern and heritage houses. Owner James Owens works in conjunction with Edmund Colville, an expert in contemporary design who is renowned for his natural swimming pools and water gardens. “My inspiration often comes from the simplicity of Japanese gardens and the natural order of climatic eco systems such as natural woodlands and meadows.” Planning for the year ahead, he predicts that the trend for pared down, contemporary landscaped gardens will continue, along with a move to favour indigenous plants and trees grown in Britain, as a response to the dangers of Ash Die Back imported here by foreign stock. Managing clients’ expectations is paramount and often making them aware that it takes 4-5 years for trees, shrubs and large perennials to look at their best. Instant gardens can be created with hard landscaping and using mature plants, but they obviously cost more. Good local gardens to see in the area are Abbots Ripton, Barnsdale Gardens and Burghley House.
ALISON HUTCHINSON www.alisonhutchinsondesign.co.uk
ADAM FROST www.adamfrost.co.uk Based at Barnsdale Gardens, Adam Frost brings ‘quirky cool’ to gardening. He appears to buck the trend for convention, mixing modern, minimalist form with the more traditional to inject a gust of fresh air into his projects. Simply put, Adam says, “What I love most about gardening is being outside and watching the seasons unfold. Each time I get involved with a new garden design or planting scheme, my number one hope is that it will make people want to get out and garden. For me, that is a mark of real success.” With regards design, Adam strongly believes that “form should always follow function” and takes great inspiration from the American Architect, Frank Lloyd Wright who was at the forefront of designing structures which were in harmony with humanity and its environment. “Your garden should be practical and individual and reflect your personality.” Adam’s predictions for key trends this year are inter-planting, using vegetables and fruit amongst flowering plants. He believes people are beginning to connect more with nature as they want more from their garden by planting edibles in smaller spaces. As a four times Chelsea Flower Show Gold Medal winner, Adam’s expertise is becoming increasingly in demand. He is running a couple of one day courses on “Garden Design” and “Planting Design” at his HQ in Barnsdale Gardens on the 16th and 17th March from 9.304.30pm. Each one day course costs £120 or £220 for both days. The course is limited to 20 participants and includes lunch. For booking please contact Amanda Pearson at Adam Frost Design on 01572 812186 or email info@adamfrost.co.uk Adam’s biggest ambition is to transform the way that horticulture is perceived so that we start to attract more young people to the sector. See next month’s issue for an in depth feature on Adam.
Alison’s enthusiasm for her profession is infectious. Whether you need her expertise on garden design or perhaps some help to revamp a particular problem area, Alison’s experience in the field of Interior and Exterior Design make her perfect to help you realise the potential of your home environment. She aims to complement her client’s individual style within their house and carry it out into the structures and plants chosen outside. With a high flying corporate background, Alison and her husband left the city stress when their daughter arrived and moved to Lincolnshire where they successfully ran a thriving 10 acre Garden Centre next to Belton House. With a delightful onsite Gardener’s Cottage, Alison decided instead of living there it would be better placed to showcase her talent by turning it into an Interiors Store where you could buy everything it housed. It was this attention to detail that made Alison so good at putting into practice her clients’ wishes and an ability to turn their dreams into reality, all within budget! Having sold the Garden Centre in 2007, Alison now lives in Morcott and concentrates on working on both commercial and private client projects. Her inspiration for Garden Design comes mainly from the landscape, choosing structural items and planting schemes that echo the colour of the surrounding stone. “The simplicity of the American architect, Thomas Church’s work, is breathtaking, the way he borrows forms from the landscape within his designs is beautiful and something I aspire to.” Although Alison has done some minimalist design work, she is happiest working on projects that are predominantly traditional styled English Country gardens, with box hedges, shrubs and colour contrasting herbaceous borders. Alison’s advice to readers starting out would be to concentrate on getting the winter structure right in their garden - paths, walls, key trees and shrubs which you will look at year round. “You can then add colour and impose your own style and taste with strong planting combinations of things you love.”

Great art in a ‘lived-in’ house
ART & CULTURE
Kettle’s Yard (www. kettlesyard.co.uk ) is a beautiful and unique house with a distinctive collection of 20th century art, and a gallery exhibiting contemporary and modern art. We particularly love the fact that the house still has a lived-in feel about it with books and furnishings. The Fitzwilliam Museum (www. fitzmuseum.cam.ac.uk) in Trumpington St houses world-class collections of works of art and antiquities spanning centuries and civilisations. We enjoyed the Impressionist and Modern galleries.
PL T
A day with a friend or family, this month we begin a new series ‘getting under the skin’ of our local towns and cities. Nicholas RuddJones starts with Cambridge, a fabulous city for walking, sightseeing or just browsing. Around every corner there is something of interest WHAT TO SEE AND DO
The Colleges. If you have to pick a couple of colleges to look at, then we suggest Trinity & King’s.
Cambridge Botanical Gardens (www.botanic.cam.ac.uk) are a little way out of the centre (near the train station) but are a complete delight.
© TRINITY COLLEGE CAMBRIDGE
Grantchester. If you’re fed up with parking in Cambridge, try walking from Grantchester; it takes about an hour. Drop in at the Orchard Tea Garden, where Rupert Brooke composed his works (www.orchard-grantchester.com) and sit in green deckchairs under stunted apple trees.

Punting. It has to be tried. Set off from Scudamores in Bridge St (www. scudamores.com) or Trinity Boat House (01223 338483). I was taught as a lad that the technique is push/pull….grind’ to keep the punt on a straight course. If it’s very hot bring a picnic and punt up to Grantchester. Bring swimming cozzie for teenagers who don’t mind the muddy water, as there are tempting to punt ropes tied onto It’s never too cold trees. apparently!

GETTING THERE AND PARKING
The getting there bit is fairly easy (less than an hour on the A14); it’s the parking bit that’s difficult. Some suggestions:
Cambridge Market in the Market Square, every day, offers a wide range of produce, goods and services, from fruit, vegetables, meat and fish, to books, clothing, sweets, a tailoring service, flowers, crafts, refreshments and bike repairs! Quirky Gifts. Ark (2 St Mary’s Passage) is a fabulous find. Art. We love the little art galleries from the Round Church to Fitzwilliam College and along King’s Parade. Fashion. The area around the Corn Exchange has lots of chains and boutiques in which a woman can get lost for several hours (men: see bookshops, above)
ES C A L P T TO EA
Hate to mention chains, but they are mostly all here; Jamie’s Italian (2 Wheeler St) stands out for its unique setting in the listed old municipal library.
For vegetarian, try the characterful basement Rainbow Café at 9a King’s Parade (www.rainbowcafe.co.uk). Service can be a bit rough and ready, but the food is good and the ambience authentic. For absolute splurge time, try Midsummer House (Michelin 2*) on Midsummer Common. A lovely walk across in good weather. Our favourite restaurant in Cambridge is Alimentum (Michelin 1*) in Hills Rd. Central Parking in Park St – only if you’re feeling rich and really know your way around the road system. But very handy. Focus on Alimentum
Alimentum has been a favourite of mine since it opened six or so years ago. The sleek modern interior is not what you expect to find in Cambridge, and you will be disappointed if you are hoping for views of dreaming spires out the window, as it’s some way from the historic centre. But Cambridge is supposed to be about originality and invention and, if that’s what you are looking for in your food, then it’s certainly worth the trek to Alimentum (if you want to persuade yourself that it’s not really out of the way, it’s very handy for the train station, or better still a postprandial walk in the Botanical Gardens) Head chef Mark Poynton cooks with flair and distinction and the establishment recently received its first Michelin star. The fixed price lunch menu at £24.50 (also available from 6pm till 7pm) is very good value indeed, but there is also an à la carte option and a 10 course ‘surprise’ if you are a gourmand or having something big to celebrate. We started with mackerel, apple, horseradish & turnip; and smoked eel, apple, horseradish and truffle which I found duty bound to try as we were in eel country. Both dishes were exquisite. For the main course, my companion moved into comfort food mode, with the indulgent and delicious butternut squash; and I feasted on venison loin, potato, celeriac and plum. The visual appeal of the dish was strong, and the fabulous contrast of flavour and textures worked very well together. A stand-out dish. I pushed on manfully to desserts (someone has to try them!) and chose a de-constructed Battenberg with apricot and amaretto, which brought back youthful tea-time pleasures. An espresso to wash everything down, and it was time to continue our Cambridge Day Out. • Alimentum, 152-154 Hills Rd, Cambridge, CB2 8PB Tel: 01223 413000 www.restaurantalimentum.co.uk Parking in the multi-storey opposite, see website, or a 5-min walk from the station STAMFORD STAMFORD LIVING LIVING MARCH MARCH 2013 2013

FOOD & DR INK
A Fresh and Contemporary Approach from the Cambridge Cookery School Invest in a cookery course; invest in your future and well-being writes Sarah Lyon
W
ith Mother’s Day, half term holidays, the Easter break and summer holidays stretching out ahead of us, it is worth considering the exciting cookery courses that help to create a sense of joy and confidence at the Cambridge Cookery School. “Our sessions create warm emotional bonds and leave attendees feeling elated, content and emotionally connected.” Cooking and eating together is a perfect way to bond. Using state of the art equipment, in stunning surroundings under the guidance of professional chefs, the outcome never fails to succeed. From the moment you walk through the doors, it is Tine and her team’s focus that give you, your friends and family members the most memorable of times. Tine trained as a chef at Leith’s School of Food and Wine and has had years of experience in the food industry, working not only as a caterer but also in international food and promotion and research. Her aim is to help inspire people to have the skills they need to cook great food for themselves, friends and families in a way that can transform the quality of life. MOT OR ING
Great time to buy! Consumer confidence may be fragile, but unusual car trading conditions mean that now may be a great time to acquire a new model, according to Ashley Martin
U
sed car values have reached record levels due to a continuing major imbalance in the supply and demand equation that critically underpins all second hand vehicle market place activity. Meanwhile, although the new car market remains massively below prerecession levels, UK showroom demand is buoyant in comparison with sales in continental Europe. As a result, in a bid to keep new car sales relatively strong and where possible to avoid reducing factory production and laying off workers, many manufacturers are looking to the UK to absorb ‘spare’ volume, which means that there are potentially value-for-money deals to be secured by consumers in the market for a new car. Critically the cost to change - the key factor when consumers are making their calculations as to whether they buy a new car or opt to run one via an increasingly popular personal lease scheme - is further improved from the motorist’s perspective by the fact that used car values have never been so good. Therefore, consumers looking to part exchange may be in for a pleasant surprise when they seek a valuation on their existing motor. So-called residual values are always relative to a car’s condition, age and mileage, but there is exceptionally strong demand among dealers for what’s known in the trade as ‘retail ready’ models. In other words cars that apart from a bit of polish, a valet and maybe a new tyre can be displayed on forecourts and do not require bodyshop attention. It all means that with the March arrival of the new ‘13’ number plate the month is typically the largest for new car registrations, averaging 18% of a full year’s volume - now could be a good time to change. Figures from BCA, the UK’s largest vehicle auction company which has a complex in Peterborough, reveal that the average value of a used car in 2012 was £6,199 - the highest annual figure on record and a rise of £280 compared to 2011 (up 4.7%), and by £358 (6.1%) compared to 2010. That increase comes against a backdrop of rising average age and mileage over the past three years to 62.07 months and 58,969 miles respectively in 2012. BCA managing director Spencer Lock said: “These latest figures provide further proof that the stock shortage resulting from depressed new car sales since 2008 is having a significant effect on used car values three and four years down the line.
36
“Used car retailers will continue to be faced with increasing competition when sourcing the most attractive and retail-ready used cars, because these are the cars everyone wants and they are in such short supply.” Evidence that private buyers are increasingly in the market for a new car purchase comes from 2012 sales figures compiled by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT). They reveal that in a total new car market up 5.3%, private registrations increased 12.9% to take a 45.5% market share with the remaining volume going into a slightly depressed corporate sector. Commenting on the year-on-year increase in private sales which numbered more than 106,000 new registrations, a trade association spokesman said: “Offers and incentives and some buyers shifting from buying used to new cars could have contributed to the upturn.” The SMMT said that it expected the 2013 new car market to hold firm with the spokesman adding that motor manufacturers and dealers would be “working hard to deliver quality and value to motorists”. In seeking to buy a new car there are a plethora of websites that highlight discounts that some dealers are prepared to offer on certain new models. For example, I recently spotted 23% off a Citroen C3 1.4 HDI VTR+ 5dr and 21% off a Nissan Qashqai 1.6 N-Tec+ 5dr both at Cars2buy. co.uk, while a 24% discount was available on an Audi A6 2.0 TDI SE at Drive the Deal. Using that information, consumers looking to part-exchange their current motor could find their way to a solid deal, while strong finance offers are also reportedly winning over consumers, particularly in the form of personal contract purchase plans. As the National Franchised Dealers’ Association, which represents franchised car and commercial vehicle retailers across the UK, says, the 2012 market indicated that competitive offers by manufacturers will persuade retail buyers into the showrooms. Against a background of economic uncertainty, rising domestic bills and job uncertainty all conspiring to undermine consumer confidence to a degree, dealers will have to continue to offer strong encouragement through competitive pricing and incentives to convince motorists to commit to big ticket purchases such as cars. Allied to the strength of used car values, consumers in the market for a new car may just be able to grab themselves a bargain.

L ocal sport
A passion for Sport Bob Feetham, previously Chairman of Stamford AFC and owner of the Rutland Times, takes a look at the power of amateur endeavour in our local sports scene
Cottesmore Amateurs Football Club Footballing veterans Alan Westray and Gordon McNeill have spent a combined 112 years serving Cottesmore Amateurs Football Club. During that quite remarkable period, they have met fire, flood, success and disaster in equal measure - and emerged unscathed! Alan, worthy recipient of Rutland County Council’s 2012 lifetime sports achiever award, has totted up 57 years, Gordon McNeil (L) and Alan Westray (R) while Gordon can boast just two years fewer. Visit the Amateurs’ Rogues Park ground, tucked away at the back of the Sun Inn and village hall, and you will suddenly find yourself looking at a delightful little football ground. Floodlight pylons look down on a quality pitch surrounded by stands and established conifers. It is certainly a long call from the days when they played on Greetham Road, Rogues Lane and enjoyed a ‘tenant’ spell at RAF Cottesmore. The new facilities cost over £33,000 and, while they received grants, Amateurs had to raise half the cash themselves. They did that and produced an outstanding ground. With that achieved, Alan, supported by three excellent managers in Chris Duggan, Simon Dawes and Darren Munton, moved the club smoothly up through a number of leagues. Having spent their early competitive years in the Rutland, Melton and Bourne competitions, they joined the Leicester and District League in 1983, before progressing on to the Leicestershire Senior League seven years later. Both Alan and Gordon have wonderful memories, particularly of 1996 when Croatia, in England for the European Championships, stayed at Barnsdale Lodge and chose Rogues Park as their training base. As a result, big name stars from such huge clubs as Real Madrid and Inter Milan came to train on Cottesmore’s humble patch. “Without doubt, it has been a huge highlight of our 70-year history,” said Alan proudly. Villagers still recall how excited youngsters rushed to the ground after school to see their newly-adopted heroes. Training often ended with players seeing who could put a football against the crossbar from the halfway line. It never took long! Flood has been a minor problem for Amateurs, heavy rain causing problems at the Oakham end of Rogues Park. But it is fire that has cast the most sinister shadow. Last year, vandals struck when they torched an old cricket pavilion which stood next to a metal container housing all Cottesmore’s worldly possessions. Incredibly, the heat melted that container and everything in it. “Mowers, electrical equipment, corner flags, nets, even the tea hut boiler! Up it all went in flames at a cost of around £70, 000,” said Alan. “I thought we were finished.” But then came the miracle. Local farmer and former Rutland County Agricultural Show president David Hollius turned up with tractor and trailer to haul off all the metal to a Somerby scrap yard and came back with a cheque. Cottesmore WI gave a generous donation - and Amateurs started the fight back. Reserve and youth teams were abandoned at that time but plans are afoot to bring them back. The future looks rosy again. • To find out more contact Tel: 01572 724275
Stamford Amateur Boxing Club It may go unnoticed by many people, but Stamford can boast a high quality amateur boxing club run by highly skilled coaches and dedicated helpers. The last boxing club folded in Stamford some 50 years ago but thanks to husband and wife team Catherine and Rick Green the sport is enjoying a renaissance in the town. Initially introduced as a boxing fitness gym in 2006, it gained affiliation to the ABA (Amateur Boxing Association) as a competitive amateur club for the sport four years later. It was based originally in the room above the Stamford Fire Station before moving across the yard to the old mess hall. The club provides a gym for talented young boxers and, for the past six years it has run training nights on Tuesdays and Thursdays evenings when it caters for ages from seven to 50. • For more details call 07854 729 234 or 07966 302 757

L o N DO N walk
Regent’s Canal, Limehouse Basin and the Thames
THE ROUTE
1
Walk across from King’s Cross through St Pancras (where the old station gives way to the modern extension), and turn right onto Pancras Rd; follow this road, swinging slightly to the left, until you reach St Pancras Gardens
It’s remarkable how much of London you can see on foot in a day, and this walk will amaze you; passing through the salubrious and not so salubrious parts of London, taking you through the ‘new London’ of the Docklands and ending up with the Thames and all ‘the classics’ – Tower Bridge, St Paul’s and ‘The Shard’, now ever present on the skyline
2
Walk through the gardens and exit at the NE corner into Camley Street. (If you are in to your urban nature, take a short detour right at this point to Camley Street Natural Park, which was created from an old coal yard). Head left and you will soon reach the canal, which you join on the N bank
POINTS OF INTEREST WALK DATA Distance 6 miles Typical time 4 hours (including an hour for sightseeing) Map A-Z of London or Google Start King’s Cross Finish St Paul’s; or Limehouse Basin Terrain Flat, easy going; the constant hard surface can be tough on the feet though How to get there Day return to King’s Cross; keep cost down by taking Capital Connect or travelling off-peak
Above: A view of Tower Bridge…with the Shard in the background as always Below: Limehouse Basin
St Pancras Gardens There is so much of interest to be found in the gardens, including the extravagant BurdettCoutts memorial sundial, the Hardy tree encircled by tombstones, an ancient church and the famous memorial to Sir John Soane’s wife, the design of which inspired the classic ‘K2’ Gilbert Scott red telephone box (right). The Regent’s Canal The Regent’s Canal was completed in 1820 to link the Paddington arm of the Grand Junction Canal with the River Thames at Limehouse.

the Limehouse Basin; a great place to stop for a snack is Broadway Market in Hackney

From Broadway Market, keep on the canal, passing Victoria Park (public toilets) on your left and eventually reaching Limehouse (if you have had enough at this stage you can hop on the Light Docklands Railway here)

7
Skirt round the right hand side of the Limehouse Basin, until you reach the River Thames and the Thames Path; follow this path west now, keeping a careful eye out for the signs as it’s not always straightforward.

3
Walk along the canal path, under the Eurostar track taking trains to Paris, passing by the Guardian building on your right at York Way, and then a sign up to the Canal Museum on your left. On reaching the long Islington Tunnel (968 yards), you have to head up onto the roads as there is no footpath at this point.
London Canal Museum, 12 New Wharf Rd www.canalmuseum.org.uk If you want to find out more about the history of the canal, then the canal museum, just south of the canal alongside Battlebridge Basin is worth a look. It is clearly signposted from the canal and is a five minute walk. Open every day except Monday. Victoria Park The city’s first public park, it was opened in the East End in 1845 after a local MP presented Queen Victoria with a petition of 30,000 signatures. The aim was to make it a kind of Regent’s Park for the east and it originally had its own Speakers’ Corner. Although any one could set up their own soapbox, the biggest crowds were usually drawn to ‘star’ socialist speakers such as William Morris and Annie Besant. Limehouse Basin The Basin was used by seagoing vessels and lighters to offload cargoes to canal barges, for onward transport along the Regent’s Canal. It was closed to commercial traffic in 1969, with one quay at the Basin retained for the use of pleasure craft. There are several information boards around the basin that will tell you more.
7
4
Our suggested route would be to cross the tunnel mouth along Muriel St, turn left into Wynford Rd, right into Chapel Market, right at Liverpool Rd and then across Upper St and over Camden Passage, taking Duncan Rd on the other side to re-join the canal on the N side where it comes out of the tunnel at the bottom of this street.
8
At Tower Bridge, head across to the south side and walk past the new City Hall to the New Tate; cross back over the Millennium Footbridge and then catch the tube back from St Paul’s. • A highly recommended book is The Regent’s Canal by David Fathers (Francis Lincoln Publishers). Beautifully illustrated and stuffed full of interesting observations. £9.99 RSP
PITSTOPS Towpath Café, 42 De Beauvoir Crescent, just after Whitmore Rd Highly recommended for its ambience, quirkiness and interesting food. A great place to watch the world of the canal go by. The café isn’t open during the winter months but opens ‘when the weather improves’. Broadway Market: Café Villa D’Aversa, 15 Broadway Market We loved this café; bustling Café Villa D’Aversa with intense and convivial is everything a café conversations and people don’t should be mind if you squeeze in and slowly expand. On a Saturday enjoy the bustling Broadway Market (www.broadwaymarket.co.uk) Prospect of Whitby, 57 Wapping Wall The food is ‘average’, but the setting, history and beer are all notable. Try and get a seat overlooking the Thames, or in the summer the balcony. Henry VIII used to drink & eat here, whether he ate the fish and chips as we did is not recorded. Town of Ramsgate, 62 Wapping High St Most diners seem to rate the food here as better than the Prospect of Whitby; it also is very historic and has a terrace out the back overlooking the river; so maybe have a drink in the Prospect, but eat here. Unusual Vegetables Have you noticed the increasing number of unusual vegetables available in our supermarkets? Sue Lee & Jean Orpin have been discovering where and how some have been grown
V
egetable growers and seed producers have a commercial interest in providing something unusual for the consumer. During the 19th and 20th centuries the vegetables we are familiar with were developed by selection and cross-breeding – what we consider normal would have seemed unusual on a 16th century plate! Did you realise that carrots were originally purple? The modern orange colour was cultivated by Dutch growers in tribute to their royal family, the House of Orange. Purple carrots have been revived but recent attempts to persuade us to buy them from the supermarket were not successful. On the other hand the revival of Romanesco broccoli has proved appealing. Only time will tell whether the new crop of unusual and healthy vegetables stand the test of time.
Flower Sprouts This healthy addition to our diet has been nominated for an outstanding innovation award at Fruit Logistica (the leading international trade fair in the fresh produce trade). It is the result of 15 years work at Tozer Seeds, the largest independent vegetable breeding company in the UK. Brussels sprouts and kale were crossed to produce Flower Sprouts ® which look like a miniature cabbage with frilly leaves and purple streaks. Tozer Seeds have trial fields in Lincolnshire where the Flower Sprout ® was developed and they are being grown by Staples, also in Lincolnshire. Staples are large farmers based at Wrangle near Boston who specialise in growing brassicas (including Romanesco) and are keen to experiment with new varieties. This is the third season they have been available in Marks and Spencer. Flower Sprouts ® contain far more vitamins than usual sprouts and are easy to cook. They have their very own website (www. flower-sprout.com) where you can find cooking methods and recipes. If you don’t try them this month, you will have to wait until next November because they are only grown in winter and only in this country.
Exotic Mushrooms ‘The taste of the Orient direct from Leicestershire’ – a strong selling point for Livesey Bros who are
the UK’s leading grower of unusual mushrooms including enoki, maitake and shiro shimeji. They have developed a wide range over a number of years and nowadays their products can be found in supermarkets such as Morrisons and Waitrose in Stamford, where they sell well. These mushrooms have a relatively short shelf life so Livesey’s are able to provide better quality, with a much lower carbon footprint, than imported ones. Tim and Simon Livesey have about 45 growing rooms in operation on their farm in north-west Leicestershire and a number of others set aside for research and development. All of these can be individually controlled to provide the right conditions for different mushrooms - no pesticides, chemicals or fertilisers are needed. The spores are grown on miniature tree stumps or logs and can take from 3 weeks to 6 months to mature. It is still a labour-intensive product as all the mushrooms are picked by hand. They are constantly experimenting to produce more varieties, the latest being eryngii, a type of oyster mushroom. These are also called the Emperor mushroom because they have the best flavour of the oyster type and they are large mushrooms. For recipe ideas from the Liveseys visit www.mushroommeals.co.uk.
Purple Majesty The latest variety of purple potato was bred in America, grown in Scotland and is for sale in Morrisons. It is the purplest of the purple potatoes having purple flesh as well as purple skin! Like other purple foods it is high in antioxidants which protect against cancer and heart disease and, according to the producers, it retains its healthy properties when it is cooked. It can be mashed, baked, roasted or microwaved and undoubtedly makes a colourful addition to a dish so why not try them? It would be pity if such a healthy potato suffered the same fate as purple carrots just because we are not adventurous enough to try something unusual. Who knows; by the 22nd century people may wonder what a white potato tastes like.

FOOD & DR INK
SEAN’S KITCHEN CONFIDENTIAL MAGNIFICENT MUTTON
Feet up after a wintry walk, coffee on, the smell of slow-cooked food drifting in from the kitchen, family members chatting idly in the dining room. Sound good?
W
ell, mutton (or hogget) is a great choice for a relaxed Sunday feast like this, and it may well be something you haven’t tried before. Hogget is the meat from a sheep that’s between one and two years old, while mutton comes from animals that are older still – generally between two and five years old. Both hogget and mutton have a greater depth of flavour than lamb, and if you haven’t tried them, you really should give
A BEER WITH YOUR CASSEROLE? A good local ale to go with this casserole would be Grainstore of Oakham’s Rutland Panther. It’s known as a dark mild, and has lovely bitter chocolate flavours.
them a go. One local farmer who produces hogget and mutton is Annie Wright of Saltby Pasture (saltbypasture@btinternet.com or 01664 430444), who looks after a flock of rare-breed Lincoln Longwool sheep near Melton Mowbray. She describes hogget and mutton as having a more mature but not a stronger flavour, which is a good way of putting it. “It loses the sweetness of lamb,” she says, “and we find that people who don’t like lamb, actually love mutton.” Here’s a wonderfully warming recipe for that perfect Sunday. You’ll see that I recommend serving the casserole with sourdough bread. And the best place to get your sourdough is undoubtedly Hambleton Bakery on Ironmonger Street – officially ‘Britain’s Best Bakery.’

demonstration at The Olive Branch on March 12. Come along, meet me, and learn some great techniques and recipes. You also get to eat what you watch being cooked! • Call 01780 410355 for more details.
MUTTON CASSEROLE SERVES 4-6 • 1.5kg diced mutton (or hogget) leg or shoulder • 3 large carrots, peeled and cut in half • 2 cloves garlic, crushed • 2 medium onions, peeled and chopped • 1 bay leaf • 1 sprig rosemary • 1 sprig thyme • Chopped parsley • 1 lamb stock cube • 3 peeled Maris Pipers (waxy) and 3 King Edwards (floury), cut into large chunks 1. Place all ingredients, except parsley and potatoes, into a large pot or pan and barely cover with water. 2. Bring to the boil, skim, then reduce to a simmer. 3. Cover, then cook slowly for at least four hours. 4. Around half an hour before serving, add the potato chunks and cook out. 5. Serve in large bowls topped with sprinkled chopped parsley and chunks of sourdough bread.

EATING OUT
The Lighthouse, Kibworth
Nicholas Rudd-Jones went down to Kibworth to try out the brand new Lighthouse from a tried and trusted ‘old’ crew Take one of the very best chefs in the region (Lino Poli), the warmest, most enthusiastic front of house person you will ever meet (Sarah, his wife) and a completely re-launched restaurant (the classic Italian Firenze morphing into the informal sea blue Lighthouse) and you have a culinary experience that absolutely has to be tried out. We arrived to the same lovely warm welcome from Sarah, but a much more informal ambience themed around the Lighthouse blue and a very different bill of fare. The menu is printed on brown wrapping-style paper and comes on a clipboard, a big clue to the informality of the menu; starting with ‘nibbles’, progressing through mains that can be ordered ‘small’ or ‘large’ and finally to ‘puddings’. Supper is served from 6pm Tuesday to Saturday, and we were sat next to a couple who were just finishing up who came regularly and saw it as a ‘pit stop’ rather than a special occasion. We shared three starters that got us off to a classic start – Bruschetta; a glass of prawns; and spiced whitebait. Delicious hunger breakers. But it is the mains that were the real stand-outs, dishes that you would be hard put to beat anywhere in the region: a lobster spaghetti, with an incredibly generous and fresh helping of lobster fins and a rich lobster sauce; and griddled tiger prawns with cannellini beans in cream and garlic sauce – what a fabulous contrast between the shellfish and the beans, original and different from a standard pasta base. There’s an emphasis on fish, but plenty to please the meat lovers and vegetarians too. Desserts are all classic crowd pleasers. I picked the panna cotta with caramelised pineapple, which works really well together. The Lighthouse is a neighbourhood restaurant which hits all the right spots - delicious food, a strong wine list, a warm, relaxed welcome and complete menu flexibility. Heartily recommended. • No 9 Station Street, Kibworth Beauchamp, Leicestershire, LE8 OLN Tel: 01162 796260 www.lighthousekibworth.co.uk

usiness partners Marcus Welford and Tim Luff are on a mission: to restore the onetime beating heart of the English village - the village pub - to rude health. My great fortune and others in Ketton is that they chose the Northwick Arms for their campaign. Marcus, a founder of the Olive Branch, and Tim, a chef there for 8 years, certainly know the ingredients of a successful ‘pub that does food’. (Marcus dislikes the term ‘gastro pub’.) We took along friends from Stamford who remember the pub as a popular ‘boozer’ worth the trip from town. It is now much changed, both in looks and ambition. We sat in front of a crackling log fire while we dithered about what to eat from the varied and tempting menu and blackboard regulars. Gary eventually went for the Roasted Ratatouille and Goat’s Cheese Tart on the basis that this would be a real test of the chef’s skill.
50
(He passed with flying colours.) Candy and I had the Wild Mushrooms with Madeira and Tarragon and Jo the Thai Spiced Fishcakes - a particular success, fluffy and flaky fish working well with a piquant Chilli Salsa. The mains were equally as impressive. Roast Chicken and Fondant Potato was beautifully offset by a robust mushroom and bacon sauce and Gary’s Chicken and slow-cooked Ham pie from the blackboard was ‘exquisite’ in its richness. A delicate Creme Brûlée, rich Brownies and generous cheese selection completed the piece. Service was attentive without being fussy. Our meal came to £30 a head with wine, so good value too. Chatting to Marcus the next day there was an obvious sense that he has a real zeal to re-create the pub as a hub of the community summer events are planned in the large garden,
children and dogs are welcome (there’s a great children’s menu) and next-door neighbour Adam will soon be creating an allotment for the pub - the villagers are getting behind the movement. • The Northwick Arms, High Street, Ketton, PE9 3TA Tel: 01780 720238.

B R I N G I N G L OCA L FOOD T O LIFE
Your local organic farm In the first in a new series of features designed to shine a light on local food and drink, Matt Wright visits Riverford at Sacrewell Farm…
K
issing the A1 near Wansford sits one of the UK’s leading organic farms. You might know Sacrewell Farm & Country Centre as a great place to take the kids, but next door to this popular family attraction is a completely separate working farm whose produce ends up in some of Stamford’s most discerning stomachs. Since 2008, 500-acre Sacrewell Farm has been run by multiaward-winning Riverford Organic – a farming and food delivery business launched in Devon in 1987. The man behind Riverford is Guy Watson, recently named BBC Farmer of the Year 2012, who started out delivering food grown over three West Country acres to 30 friends. Guy’s business now delivers 40,000 organic boxes a week across the UK, and around 7,000 of these are packed at Sacrewell. This entire quantity – between one and two tonnes of veg – is picked by just four workers at Sacrewell. Everything here is harvested by hand. Nigel Venni from Peterborough is the farmer on the ground at Sacrewell and spending a little time with him and his team quickly highlights just how hard organic farming is. It is unforgiving, especially when the weather is against you as it was for much of 2012. Being organic means Nigel can’t use any chemicals or pesticides and, as a result, he has to contend with lower yields and pests such as white fly. However, Riverford is not a company to take the easy route for a quick buck, and that is why it has won so many awards. In addition to sticking to its organic philosphy like glue, the Devon-based producer has kept its food miles as low as possible and its farming as small scale as market forces allow by linking up with sister farms across England – in Hampshire, Yorkshire, and here, at Sacrewell. So, a Riverford cabbage delivered to a home in, say, Easton on the Hill, is now grown at Sacrewell rather than Devon. • Contact: www.riverford.co.uk/sacrewell 01780 789700
A chat with the farmer… About the writer Matt Wright founded and runs Greatfoodmag.co.uk and Greatfoodclub.co.uk, two Leicestershirebased websites that celebrate and promote local food and drink.
“We grow Megaton, Belton, Darwin, Kenton and Galvani varieties,” says Nigel Venni, head farmer at Sacrewell Farm, pointing to his leeks. “There’s the purple sprouting broccoli, there’s the wet garlic we planted at the end of October just poking through, and next door are cabbages – January King, Tundra Green and Wintessa Savoy. We grow lots of varieties of the same vegetable for a couple of reasons. First, the soil at Sacrewell varies dramatically, even within individual fields, so we try to match vegetable variety to soil type. Second, it means we haven’t got all our eggs in one basket – if Darwin doesn’t do too well, then Belton can come to the rescue.” Join Great Food Club – free of charge – and discover the very best local food and drink Members can enjoy special offers at over 60 handpicked independent pubs, restaurants, producers and farm shops www.greatfooodclub.co.uk/join

NGI Design expands its offering Nicholas Rudd-Jones met with Darren Cherry and Neil Partridge, co-owners of NGI Design, to discuss their expansion plans for this year and beyond
D
arren and Neil have established NGI as a national force in modern design with commissions stretching across the country and much repeat business. Their combined skills enable them both to inspire & design and also to fit out and complete all the work required. This year, 2013, their aim is to ‘re-introduce’ themselves to the local market, demonstrate that they have a range of value points throughout the price range as well as at the top end and to launch a fabulous new tile showroom. ‘Interior Architecture’ “More and more we get involved in whole house design projects,” Darren told me. “We like to use the term ‘Interior Architecture’ to describe our process of intense collaboration with the client, reviewing design choices, specifying and then installation.” NGI will look after your house project from start to finish, be it one room or the whole house - fitting a kitchen, a bathroom or creating and designing an overall look throughout the house. “Our emphasis is on contemporary and high quality, but we are also very relevant to kitchens in the midrange price-wise. We are much more approachable than sometimes people think, and they are pleasantly surprised when they discover we are very competitive with other kitchen suppliers!”
Darren (L) and Neil (R)
New Tile Showroom The big news this year is that the back of the existing showroom will be turned over to an exciting new display of tiles from Italy and Spain, including the Marazzi, Ragno and Grespania brands. There will be innovative finishes, even some 3-D tiles. “It was a natural development for us,” Neil told me, “as clients are often asking us to specify tiles and want to take a proper look at them; so it will be very useful to have them to hand!” Bathroom offering At the same time Darren & Neil will also be expanding their bathroom offering, and creating a display in store to further whet the appetite (or should that be wet?!). Their styles are typically simple and luxurious, often with a decorative ‘flourish’ – a big chandelier perhaps or a gold tap or 3-D tiles. Accessories and lighting The shop will continue to offer a range of affordable accessories and lighting, as well as ‘signature’ modern furniture. So in a nutshell: Quality and design inspiration combined with approachability and implementation. • NGI Design, 4 - 6 High Street, St Martin’s, Stamford, PE9 2LF Tel: 01780 766899 www.ngidesign.co.uk
