We have all had a chance to be proud now of Stamford being anointed as the ‘Best Place to Live in Britain’ by The Sunday Times But what of the future? What of the next generation? Well, just in the last month there have been several announcements that bode well for the future and show the commitment of voluntary groups to making things happen: • The Skate park has finally jumped its final hurdle and construction should commence soon, thanks to the tireless work of the Skate park Committee over the last five years • Plans for the new Stamford AFC ground are progressing well, with the inspired idea of linking up with Stamford College to make the whole adventure part of a learning as well as sporting endeavour • A group of St Gilbert’s parents is exploring the possibility of setting up a free school in Stamford to add to the thriving mix of secondary education that already exists. Find out more at www. stamfordfreeschool.org.uk • Stamford College goes from strength to strength and is full of vigour and creativity – I took a trip around a few weeks ago and was deeply impressed • The Stamford Endowed Schools have one of the biggest six forms in the country offering one of the broadest range of subjects – 28 in total. On a lighter note, we celebrate the winners of the Young Faces of Stamford this month. So many things look bright for the future.

The competition was hosted in Bubble and Squeak, the popular children’s shop on the High Street over their 2nd birthday weekend. You can see the photos of all this year’s entries via ‘ShutterBox Photography’s’ Facebook page. Arch Label Agency celebrates its 10th anniversary…and a second shop! “It’s all in the mix – the mix of top designers which is important,” says Susie Archer who is celebrating 10 years of Arch Label Agency, which stocks pre-owned luxurious designer clothes, shoes and accessories. “I am just as excited now as I was ten years ago starting out – I love doing what I do, it doesn’t feel like a job and I never know what little sartorial gem is going to hit the shop floor next. For instance, I have just picked up a new client, based in Monaco, who sent over pieces from Christian Dior, Oscar de la Renta, Chanel and Valentino. These top designers use the most beautiful fabrics which feel and look wonderful; the finish and attention to detail is a joy to behold. It is a pleasure and privilege to be surrounded by such creativity. Miu Miu sits alongside Isabel Marant, Yves Saint Laurent, Mulberry, Gucci, Balenciaga, Lanvin, Marni, Burberry, Alexander McQueen, Alberta Ferretti, Pucci, Alice Temperley, Prada, Givenchy, Michael Kors, Hermès, Loro Piano – it is fabulous to have so many prestigious designers under one roof and at a fraction of the original retail price. “I haven’t lost sight of my aim, which has always been to stock the very best quality pieces at affordable prices. A pair of classic new, unworn Christian Louboutin heels (those with the seductive red soles) can be snapped up for £250 which is less than half the original price – quite a saving. “I have lovely loyal customers coming in on a very regular basis so it is important to keep the shop looking fresh and current. We have a great turnover so I am constantly replenishing stock.” It is a simple formula which works well for Arch Label Agency, so much so that the business is thrilled to announce another shop. “I have found wonderful larger premises which will show off the clothes and bags beautifully and the Maiden Lane premises will become a shoe temple - it is an exciting time for Arch Label Agency and a great way to celebrate 10 years!” • Maiden Lane, Stamford. Two Little Birds It’s three years since Two Little Birds started offering sewing classes in Stamford, and the business goes from strength to strength. Owner Vicky Palmer holds weekly classes in her Stamford home, including Saturday classes, teaching everything from decorative appliqué techniques to how to make a Roman blind for your home. The classes are competitively priced and small class sizes enable Vicky to be easily on hand to offer tips and advice on achieving a professional finish. Most popular are the ‘Make It Friday!’ Sessions, which take place every Friday during term time from 9.30-12.30. Ideal if you wish to start a project or need help finishing one! Sewing machines are available as well as expert help and of course, delicious homemade refreshments. A great opportunity to sew, chat and eat cake! When she is not teaching other people to sew, Vicky is busy creating exquisite cushions and home accessories, which are for sale exclusively in Stamford at H-Works; a shop dedicated to bespoke upholstery and beautiful fabrics. Courses available this term include Decorative Doorstops and beautiful Bolster Cushions. • For more details and for times and prices see the website www.two-little-birds.co.uk or call Vicky on 07906 804085

A Stamford project
Harris McCormack Architects celebrate their 3rd anniversary Harris McCormack Architects celebrate three years since their formation in Stamford. Now a team of four, Directors Simon Harris and William McCormack (both previously partners in an established local practice) have a wealth and diversity of experience in many architectural disciplines. Their vision in founding Harris McCormack was to create a practice that thought out of the box, that was not afraid to do things differently and that looked at every project/site on its individual merits. What they have been very successfully doing since is mixing the contemporary with the traditional, remaining within the aesthetics of a listed building whilst creating fabulous new lifestyle spaces. They work principally on individual projects, are experts at listed buildings and are entirely flexible in the degree of support they give a client; from drawing up plans to managing an entire project through to completion. They have taken on many interesting commissions in Stamford, but also have a national reach to their practice. They are also interested in ECO projects and have recently begun a commission to design an ECO house with as turf roof in Yorkshire. “Once people have lived in a house for a while, they often lose track of what’s possible…we can get the creative juices flowing again, and come up with ideas that will truly surprise you but still be in harmony with what you have.” So if you want something refreshingly different but still in keeping, why not give them a call. Live a little! • 3 Wellington Lane , Stamford, PE9 1QB Tel: 01780 767707 www.harrismccormack.co.uk

Genevieve Potter explores some brand new, results-driven beauty treatments and products for you to try out this spring
The Stress-Fix at Gerards
When is a pedicure so much more than a pedicure? When it’s a Stress-Fix pedicure at Gerards. The Stress-Fix range from Aveda has launched this month and I was excited to sample it for myself; having just moved house I was definitely ready to see if it lived up to its promise of clinically reducing feelings of stress. Anneli carried out the treatment and I instantly felt cocooned in Gerards’ warm and cosy treatment room. The Stress Fix products are made from organic pure plant oils extracted from farms in the French Alps and they smell divine; with a potent blend of Lavender, which is well-known for its relaxing properties, as well as Lavandin and Clary-Sage. When combined, these plants have been clinically shown to reduce cortisol, the body’s stress hormone and they have healing, relaxing and balancing properties (nature can be incredibly powerful!). I was left to relax, sipping Aveda herbal tea, whilst my feet were soaked in a warm bath. Anneli then used Stress Fix soaking salts, containing mineral rich salts and organic sugar to gently exfoliate my feet and legs (this product is perfect to add to your bath for an athome treat). She then massaged my feet, soles and calves using firm reflexology-based techniques, with the Stress Fix lotion. My feet were then wrapped in hot towels prior to the finishing touches; a thorough cuticle tidy and perfectly-applied Jessica polish. The pedicure costs £35 and lasts 75 minutes (a manicure version is available for overworked hands, costing £31 for 60 minutes). It was one of the most relaxing treatments that I have ever experienced and I reluctantly went back to reality feeling pampered, but more importantly, centred and calm. • Gerards, George Hotel Mews, Stamford PE9 2LB Tel 01780 753002

The Callus Peel at Stamford Beauty & Nail Boutique With sandal season fast approaching, smooth feet are a must. Stamford Beauty & Nail Boutique have just launched a great summer treatment called the Callus Peel, using natural fruit acids to achieve baby-soft feet in double quick time. I recently enjoyed trying the Callus Peel for myself; therapist Lisa placed cooling pads on to the problem areas of my feet, then they were gently wrapped in cling film for the fruit acid to activate. After around 15 minutes, dead skin is gently scraped away, followed by a quick file with a foot rasp. Finally softening callus peel cream was applied, leaving my feet wonderfully soft and smooth. The treatment is combined with expert nail colour and costs £25 including a cuticle tidy, file and polish, or £40 as part of a full pedicure (which includes a foot soak and exfoliation, mask, hot boots, file and polish). • Stamford Beauty & Nail Boutique, 15 St Mary’s Hill, Stamford, PE9 2DP Tel: 01780 757108 www.stamfordbeauty.com
The Environ Ionzyme facial at the Advanced Beauty Clinic
Fusion SLR (Sonic Laser Rejuvenation) at Essence of Beauty Lauren at Essence of Beauty is the proud owner of the area’s first Fusion SLR system. It incorporates three essential principles to rejuvenate the skin; exfoliation, hydration and tissue regeneration. It promises to deliver results in just one hour; something I needed to experience for myself! After a thorough cleanse, Lauren used a smooth, diamond-tip wand to exfoliate, including a unique small attachment for the delicate eye area. Next Hyaluron Serum, a plumping ingredient, was gently infused in to the skin using an Acoustic Wave attachment; this made a high frequency noise and felt warm, but it wasn’t in any way unpleasant. Finally low level lasers were applied to my face to activate the Hyaluron Serum and stimulate the production of collagen and elastin, giving a tightening effect. Results can be seen after just one treatment; I particularly noticed that my jawline and neck looked tighter and smoother; like a thorough microdermabrasion, but with added sculpting. It would make an excellent treatment ahead of a special occasion where you wanted to look your radiant best. The SLR facial normally costs £80, but you can try an introductory treatment for £70, or book a course of six for £400. • Essence of Beauty 15 St Mary’s Street, Stamford PE9 2DF Tel: 01780 763564 www.essenceofbeauty.co.uk
The Advanced Beauty Clinic has recently moved premises to just a few doors along on St Martin’s, which coincided with the launch of the widely-acclaimed Ionzyme facial. Environ is a South-African skincare brand which is impressively scientific; the cornerstone of the products and treatments is Vitamin A, which has a corrective effect on skin, normalising its function and promoting the production of healthy collagen and elastin. I was treated to a taster of the pioneering Ionzyme facial by visiting Environ expert Lindsey. After a gentle cleanse and non-abrasive exfoliation (interestingly, Environ’s philosophy is based around strengthening of the facial skin, so they do not employ peels or scrubs); a highly concentrated vitamin serum was applied. Then a cooling mask was applied right over my face; including my eyes and mouth, (I talked myself in to feeling “cocooned” rather than claustrophobic!). Whilst the mask was on, a slightly tingly electrical sensation began. This was the Ionzyme machine doing its work, with a two-pronged system which transports the vitamin molecules in to the skin. After around ten minutes the mask was removed before moisturiser, eye cream and SPF were all applied. I can now fully appreciate why Environ is widely regarded as the pioneering brand in anti-ageing skin care, because the results of just one facial were exceptionally good; my skin felt plumped and glowing; good enough, in fact, to leave the salon without a scrap of makeup (although I didn’t have to, because I was treated to a demonstration of sister brand Jane Iredale’s fantastic mineral make up). The 90 minute Ionzyme facial costs £75. • The Advanced Skin Clinic 8, High Street, St Martin’s Stamford, PE9 2LF Tel: 01780 481155
Spin Repair Spin Repair employs advanced science to successfully treat patients requiring intensive physiotherapy to help repair and rebuild cartilage and muscle (the clinic is currently treating sports professionals from Peterborough United F.C. and Leicester Tigers R.U.F.C.). It can also restore facial and body tissue by gently activating water within the skin’s tissues to help significantly improve collagen quality, improve skin tone and reduce wrinkles and cellulite (one of the major benefits is that you can treat face and body simultaneously). “RELAX, UNWIND, REGAIN YOUR SENSE OF WELLBEING” 8am – Samantha Hiseman, Owner of Equilibrium, Stamford’s Beauty Salon hideaway, arrives to open up and prepare for the long day ahead. Now in her 8th year, with a team of six, Samantha has extended her opening hours to accommodate the high demand her clients require. Every Thursday, Equilibrium welcomes clients from 9am – 9pm offering a wide range of treatments and products to suit all beauty needs. 8.30am – The merry team arrives, ready to set up their individual treatment rooms and see what’s in the diary for one of their busiest days of the week. Samantha runs through the calendar of events with a quick morning meeting and then it’s off to man all stations, ready for the day ahead. She reminds the Receptionist to leave space in the diary for the increasingly popular Express Nail service, where clients can ring that day and book last minute appointments for File and Paints and Manicures at their Nail Station in Reception, whilst enjoying a catch up and coffee. Samantha says, “What I love about my day is the variety it brings. No two clients are ever the same, each requiring specific attention to detail and a kind, holistic approach. It’s very rewarding seeing busy stressful clients enter Equilibrium, only to seemingly ‘float’ out a while later, feeling renewed, refreshed and invigorated. That for
me, is total job satisfaction and something I impart to all the Therapists that join our team.” 9am – First through the door is a regular client who always requests an Indian Head Massage on her day off from her busy job. She quotes the benefits as being long lasting and a saviour to maintain her work/life balance. “I leave Equilibrium feeling a far calmer person, ready to cope with what life has to throw at me!” 9:45am – Next is a body conscious bride-to-be who has come in for her first treatment in a course of three of the Universal Contour Wrap – a “scientifically proven” inch loss treatment, using a natural sea clay body wrapping process to exfoliate and cleanse the skin, as well as detoxifying the system. “My skin feels tauter, more contoured and I’ve lost 8.5 inches! I can’t wait for my next session.” 10am – Samantha, who specialises in Reflexology very often treats pregnant ladies keen to induce overdue babies, or those trying to conceive both naturally and those undergoing the stress of IVF. Today she will be offering her services to one of her regular clients who is 39 weeks. “With my first, I found Samantha once I was already one week overdue, however, the day after my reflexology treatment I went into labour so I was determined to be more organised this time!” In 2005, Equilibrium opened the ‘Meadows Suite,’ a dual treatment room where couples, friends, mothers and daughters can enjoy treatments together to celebrate an anniversary, birthday or just some quality time together. 11am – Two stressed mums arrive to enjoy a Pedicure, coffee and a gossip together in the Meadows Suite having been recommended by another friend and within a few minutes of choosing nail colours and enjoying bubbling foot spas the sound of relaxed laughter fills the room. On leaving an hour later, both friends are confirmed fans and have made bookings for future catch ups together. “We’re aiming to work our way through the treatment menu together!” It’s a busy time between midday and 1.30pm when most people take a lunch break. With the team usually inundated with clients, both male and female, requesting waxing – from the usual brows, lip, chin, legs, underarm and of course bikini line, with all Therapists specially trained in ‘Advanced Waxing Techniques.’

1:15pm - Another bride to be comes in to collect an HD brows patch test kit before having their treatment on Saturday. Samantha stresses, “It’s essential we’re rigorous in testing that a client doesn’t have an allergic reaction to certain procedures – especially before their big day!” 1.30pm – A long standing client arrives for their Hot Stone Back Massage, a procedure that uses specially heated volcanic stones combined with Swedish style massage movements to uplift and relax the body. “I feel a million dollars after pampering both my skin and muscles. I alternate between the Lava Shells massage which uses naturally self heating Tiger clam shells from the Philippines which are also heated for an amazing deeper massage helping to release my muscle tension.” 2.15pm – Relatively new to Equilibrium’s menu of treatments is CACI, a computer aided face toning treatment to improve skin texture. A client arrives for her fifth treatment from her course of ten. “My friends and family have all remarked on how noticeable it is – the wrinkles and lines on my face have softened and my skin feels and looks more radiant and youthful, just the outcome I was looking for!” 3.45pm – The next client to arrive has been given an Equilibrium gift voucher by her husband as a birthday treat and she’s so excited to have chosen The Ultimate Stress Buster Aromatherapy Massage – a full body, face and scalp massage, using specific aromatherapy oils to suit the client’s needs ensuring the ultimate in relaxation. “I feel like a coiled spring – juggling a job with three small children is tough so I just can’t wait! I only hope I don’t snore on the bed!” 4pm – One of their youngest clients, a 3 year old suffering from blocked ears and slight hearing problems arrives with his mother for their weekly Hopi Ear Candling session. “I’m so pleased with Oliver’s progress, he even asked me to turn the radio down this morning!” 4.15pm – OPI GelColor Nails are requested at the next appointment - this new system allows the nail to stay healthy, strong and shiny. It goes on like polish, dries in 30 seconds, and lasts for a couple of weeks with no chipping or peeling. With Gelcolor you are sure to fall in love with your nails all over again. The client requests a funky pink colour for her girls’ weekend away! 4.45pm – Spray Tan for the next client who is hosting a big Friday night party for her friends and family so wants to look her best. She chooses to have an exfoliation first so the spray tan is applied
evenly, looks authentic and lasts longer. 5:15pm – One of their many male customers arrives for his regular 60 minute Stress Reduction Massage and comments that many other Beauty Salons he’s experienced are predominantly geared towards female clientele with their rather “girly” decor, which can make guys feel intimidated and out of place. “I love Equilibrium’s atmosphere – it’s professional yet friendly. Samantha immediately put me at my ease and I’ve recommended Equilibrium to loads of my work colleagues and mates who are all now regulars.” 6:45pm – As the last daytime client leaves, Samantha gathers her Beauty Therapists for a quick run through of the evening ahead: 10 girls are arriving for a 2 hour Luxury Pamper Party to celebrate the beginning of their Hen Weekend in Stamford. 7pm - A PAMPER EVENING BEGINS A whirlwind of hair and handbags arrive through Equilibrium’s doors and the girls all immediately comment on the beautiful chocolate and cream decor and peaceful atmosphere. Many have rushed up from London and can’t wait to leave the city stress at the door and enjoy the ambient calm. Everyone is given a glass of bubbly each and a box of delicious Belgian chocolates to share and led upstairs to where the scene is set for their pampering. The bride-to-be and her guests
were all given an extensive menu of treatments to choose from prior to the party with the “Hen” opting for the Thalgo Facial as her extra 30 minute hostess treat - a deep cleanse, exfoliation, moisture quenching mask and nourishing moisturise so she really can ‘glow’ on her special day. Whilst this is taking place, the other girls all enjoy their mini treatments: File and Paint, Fish Pedicure, Hot Stone Therapy, Reflexology, Aqua Detox to name but a few. The evening is a huge success and at 9pm the girls leave with goodie bags thanking Samantha and her team for kicking off their special weekend so perfectly. Many of the girls book further prewedding treatments and the bride has already booked Equilibrium’s services at her hotel on the big day so she knows she’s in safe hands. 9.15pm – Samantha and her supportive team tidy up their Treatment rooms, and prepare everything for the following day, ready to start it all again tomorrow at 9am for the weekend rush. An exhausting, but fulfilling day meeting the needs of Stamford’s bold and beautiful. “OUR AIM WITH EVERY TREATMENT IS TO NOURISH YOUR MIND, BODY & SOUL” • Equilibrium. 7 St Pauls Street, Stamford. Drama queens and kings will love NB Music’s (www.nbmusiccourses. org) theatre and orchestra courses at Oakham School on 12-16 August and St John’s College School in Cambridge from 29 July to 2 August. Rachel Branston, the course organiser, said, “We bring in first-class performers to coach youngsters to make the most of their instruments and singing. It’s all about building confidence, whatever their musical ability.” The assistant musical director of The Jersey Boys in London’s West End is one of the professionals teaching this year, so it’s quality stuff. The courses are £195 per child, with discounts for siblings. Stamford’s own Welland School of Dancing is running its usual fantastic summer schools. The junior one takes place every morning from July 29 to 2 August or 5-9 August under the expert eye of Anne Desbruslais (01780 765383; thedingle@talktalk.net). Children aged six and above rehearse for a costumed performance on the final day. The cost is £60 for the week with a £10 sibling discount. The school’s Principal, Maggie Purr, then leads the Senior School, accompanied by special guest teachers, from 12-16 August for those with Grade 4 Ballet or higher (07921 213024; www.wellandschoolofdancing. co.uk). “Each day has different classes on offer; modern, ballet repertoire, pointework, stretch and conditioning, character workshops and choreography, culminating in a mini performance,” said Maggie. The cost is £7 per class, £20 per day or £95 for the week. Wildcats (01780 762000; www. wildcatstheatreschool.co.uk) runs music theatre workshops during half term, July and August for 5-13 year olds. These include a gymnastics week on 29 July at Copthill School and themed days, e.g. Harry Potter, at the Wildcats Academy in Stamford, from £20.

Make a splash Raft-building, sailing, windsurfing, kayaking and snowboarding fill the action-packed weeks at Tallington Lakes (01778 347000; www.tallington. com) this summer. The £185 price tag includes the chance to gain an RYA sailing qualification. The clue is in the name for Captain Splosh’s Summer Fun Days at Rutland Water’s Whitwell Centre during August (01780 460154; www. anglianwater.co.uk). Kids aged 7-14 enjoy land and water-based team building activities, such as canoeing and board balancing, at £55 per day or £210 for the week. RYA sailing or windsurfing courses start from £125 for two days. Younger children can also take the plunge, with two-hour fun sessions for 5-7 year olds at £16.50. More sailing activity hails at Rutland Sailing School (01780 720292; rutlandsc.co.uk). Throughout July and August the school runs beginner and RYA courses for kids aged 7 to 15, at £290 for five days. There’s also a four-day course at half term and a two-day August refresher. Or dig out your ‘Gone fishing’ sign and try fly or coarse fishing with expert Rob Waddington (www. rutlandwaterflyfishing.co.uk). “For 11-15 year olds I offer a half-day fly fishing for parent and child at £180 which includes tackle, boat hire, permits and the services of an expert guide. It gives families fond memories as they catch their first fish together and a trout each can be taken home for a delicious meal!” For children aged 4-10, Rob offers family coarse fishing at £50 per hour, plus £10 per extra child.

In the saddle “Most of the local riding stables offer pony days where children can spend a day helping out plus riding; a lot cheaper than owning your own pony!” says local mum Katy. Acupuncture and Irritable Bowel Syndrome
Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) affects 10-20%* of the UK population at any one time causing embarrassment and discomfort to sufferers. Up to 12 million people in the UK are affected by IBS at some time in their lives. More women seek help but it is just as common in both sexes and commonly starts between 15-40 years old. Acupuncture has been found to be very effective in relieving the symptoms of IBS. IBS is a long-term and often debilitating condition that causes re-occurring pain or discomfort in the abdomen. Bloating, swelling, bouts of diarrhoea and/or constipation and feeling sick are just some of the symptoms which can cause misery for sufferers. The exact cause of IBS is unknown; so many sufferers remain undiagnosed or struggle to manage their symptoms. Traditional acupuncture is a branch of Chinese medicine that recognises the importance of healthy bowels for overall physical and emotional health. Acupuncture treatments for IBS have been researched, refined and developed in China for thousands of years and understands how emotional stress can combine with physical factors to stagnate the body’s vital energy, known as Qi, and result in the symptoms of IBS. Acupuncture moves stagnation and regulates the flow of Qi in order to restore normal bowel function so that your body can properly digest food and eliminate waste products. By alleviating energy blockages in the body, acupuncture relieves IBS symptoms by reducing pain, regulating muscular movement and strengthening of the digestive tract, reducing anxiety and depression as well as decreasing stress. Acupuncturists look at the body as a whole and also provide dietary advice to ensure patients are well nourished and improve digestion. Duncan Ford, acupuncturist and British Acupuncture Council member says; “I’ve seen many patients who have struggled to get a diagnosis for IBS and so look to Traditional Chinese Medicine to help. Many of them who have suffered with IBS for years have found acupuncture to be a great relief. Acupuncture can relieve stress, one of the main causes of IBS as well as reduce pain, bloating and nausea. By treating the underlying cause of the problem rather than just the symptoms, acupuncture can provide longer term relief for sufferers. • To talk to Duncan about acupuncture, he can be contacted on 07714 575720 or email at dfordacupuncture@gmail.com. Or to book an appointment with him, contact the Broad Street Practice on 01780 480889.

A Handful of Harmonies
Alysia Anderson writes: Calling all ladies who love to sing! A Handful of Harmonies is an all-women choir formed in Langtoft in July 2011 by musical director Andrew Clingo. Andrew explained: “We started as a six-week block of singing workshops that just grew and grew: it’s incredible!” Under Andrew’s encouraging guidance, the choir has grown to almost 300 members singing in seven locations: Langtoft, Bourne, Stamford, Peterborough, Oundle, Spalding and Market Deeping. There is even a youth choir in Langtoft, the nattily-named A Handful of Harmonies, for 7-15 year olds. There are no auditions and it is all very light-hearted. The emphasis is on liberating the voice and spirit rather than perfecting technique. Andrew is a registered British Voice Association teacher and a Natural Voice Practitioner, whereby the natural voice, rather than one trained to excellence, is celebrated. He says: “The group provides a relaxed and sociable way for women to do something purely for their own enjoyment”. Certainly the ladies at the Stamford session, which takes place at the Arts Centre on Wednesdays at 6.30pm, were having a wonderful time when I joined them for a taster. Viv, a local florist, welcomed me into the alto section as Andrew led us through some rousing warm-up exercises to the accompaniment of his keyboard. Viv summed up the experience: “We’re ladies of all ages and backgrounds: retired, nurses, teachers, solicitors, florists; who get together to sing our hearts out. We’ve been steadily growing in numbers and confidence and have performed locally and twice at Her Majesty’s Theatre in the West End. We like a challenge and we all support each other. It’s a lovely atmosphere”. The group sings everything from Coldplay to Adiemus and songs from Les Misérables. On 8 June the group is performing a concert at Stamford Arts Centre to raise funds for St Barnabas Hospice at Home. Andrew plans to introduce a Wednesday afternoon session at the Arts Centre in September and to expand to Oakham/Uppingham next year, so the group really is hitting the right note. • To join them, email via www.handfulofharmonies.co.uk or call 01778 345857

Rachel Beecroft writes: A coach trip removes the stress of driving to your destination, allowing you to relax while someone else does the hard work. With this in mind my mother and I decided to book seats on a Shaws trip to the Ideal Home Exhibition at Earls Court in London. Now we have travelled many times to London, via train, where you have to get to the station first (usually Peterborough and park) and then the underground (which is such a drag when returning from a tiring day). Or we have taken our own vehicle, paid the congestion charge, suffered parking stress and the underground again! So we decided on Shaws Coaches, which provides convenient local departure points from the Deepings, Bourne, Stamford and Peterborough, and settled down for a good old natter as Steve our driver cruised down the A1 in his spotless, well looked after coach. During the journey down there was a stop at South Mimms services for a comfort break and to allow Steve his 45 min driver’s break, which gave us time to enjoy a coffee and snack before we were off again. Drinks were also available on the coach if required and there are toilet facilities on board too. As we wound through the London traffic, the knowledgeable Steve pointed out places of interest and hey presto before we knew it we had arrived at Earls Court. Five hours later the coach was waiting in exactly the same place, with plenty of room for shopping in the boot! Sitting down was a welcome relief for our tired feet as we were confidently driven home through the London rush hour. There was a short comfort break on the returning journey and Steve was able to give an estimated arrival time home so calls could be made to arrange any lifts. As the days are getting longer, a short break or day out is all the more attractive, and looking through the brochure, there is a Shaws coach trip to suit everyone; they make great presents too with gift vouchers available. From superb value London theatre trips, concerts and shows including Rod Stewart, Alfie Boe, the Chelsea Flower Show and Thursford Christmas Show to door 2 door holidays in Britain or Europe, the family-owned and managed Shaws have something for everyone. With their credentials as winners and finalists of the UK Coach Tourism Awards, you can be sure of a relaxing, stress-free way to travel. The new brochures are out now so call to receive your copy and start planning. • Shaws Coaches, Tel: 01778 342224, Email: enquiries@shawscoaches.co.uk, www.shawscoaches.co.uk

LOST COUNTRY HOUSES More than 1000 country houses have been lost since 1900. Sue Lee and Jean Orpin have investigated some local examples
FIRE UFFINGTON HOUSE Charles Bertie, the 5th son of the 2nd Earl of Lindsey, built Uffington House about 1681 in a style similar to Belton House. It was famous for the staircase painted by Verrio. In 1904 the house was totally destroyed by a fire which was discovered in the evening of 19th of December. The ground floor panelled rooms quickly caught fire and within two hours the roof had collapsed. The fire engines from Stamford had little chance of saving the building but some of the contents were rescued by local people. EXTON OLD HALL This Elizabethan house was also destroyed by fire. It was probably built by Sir James Harrington and became the property of the Noels. It is believed that a fire started accidentally when a candle lit some papers in a library. After the fire in 1810 the family built another house nearby until the hall was repaired but decided to enlarge the new house and used the old hall as a carpenter’s shop. Another fire in 1915 caused further damage.
WARTIME DAMAGE EASTON HALL This house had been the home of the Cholmeley family since the 16th century. It was partly rebuilt in 1805 and enlarged later in the 19th century creating a large imposing residence. In World War II it was requisitioned and occupied by the army and the Parachute Regiment. During the occupation there was a considerable amount of damage and the house was really too large for the family after the war. It was pulled down in 1951. The gardens have now been restored by the Cholmeley family and are well worth a visit.

THE GROUND FLOOR PANEL L E D R O O M S QUICKLY CAUGHT FIRE AN D W I T H I N T WO HOURS T HE ROOF HAD COL L A P SE D TICKENCOTE HALL Tickencote Hall was the Wingfield family home for over three centuries. The original manor house was acquired in 1602, but this was demolished to make way for a new house in the William & Mary style in 1706. In the early 19thC due to financial difficulties the house was rented and the family moved to Bath. John Wingfield fortuitously married an heiress and the house was enlarged in 1872 to 20 bedrooms and 5 reception rooms. Sadly, the family ran out of heirs to fill it and the last family occupant was a bachelor, who left in 1920. After WW II his heir found the house far too large and expensive to repair and occupy. Moreover it was an impossible time to find a suitable buyer and in 1947 the house was sold and demolished for the materials.
SURPLUS TO REQUIREMENTS KETTON HALL There have been three halls on this site. The first hall was built for the Noels when they were lords of the manor. Stephen Eaton who established a bank in Stamford lived here up to 1834. This house was rebuilt in 1873 probably by John Hopwood, a magistrate, who lived there with his five children and fifteen servants. He had a special room built to house his valuable French organ. The house was demolished in 1926 and replaced with a smaller, more convenient house. NORMANTON PARK Gilbert Heathcote, Merchant Adventurer, Director of the East India Company Governor of the Bank of England and former Mayor of London, retired aged 70 and bought the Normanton Estate in Rutland in 1722. He built a house for show to be a symbol of social and economic power, engaging an architect who was Clerk of Works at Blenheim. Heathcote was granted a baronetcy a year before he died in 1732. The 5th baron was created Baron Aveland in 1856. His wife inherited the Willoughby estate including Grimsthorpe and she preferred to live there. The Normanton estate was finally sold in 1924 and the house was demolished as it was no longer required.

Cricket Legends coming to Stamford
On Friday 26th July, Stamford School will host the Stamford Cinders 20/20 cricket match between the England Masters’ XI and Australian Masters’ XI on their cricket ground. Both teams, made up of former international cricketers, are currently being assembled by DCR Events Limited, organisers of this year’s event, with the guidance of ex-England player, Dean Headley, and the Professional Cricketers’ Association. They have already secured the services of Gladstone Small, Phil DeFreitas, Paul Nixon, Devon Malcolm and Neil Fairbrother, with further big names and details of the Australian Masters’ XI to follow. The day will start with the Chesterton Humberts Under 10s Cup, which will involve twelve local teams in a Kwik Cricket competition. Mr Will Phelan, Head of Stamford School, commented: “I am excited that Stamford School will be hosting the Stamford Cinders match. This is a community event and a day for all cricket lovers and their families from Stamford and the surrounding area.” • Tickets will be on sale online from May 1st at www.dcrevents.co.uk
Volunteers needed for Ratrace Dirty Weekend The Ratrace Dirty Weekend is taking place at Burghley Park on Sat 11 May There are already over 5,000 runners registered! It is a really tough run and is being produced on the grandest possible scale which will make it an amazing sporting day out. It is the world’s largest 20 mile assault course with 200 obstacles; some of which are colossal and truly punishing and all this will be run on our doorstep! However, if you would rather not run the race but would like to be part of the action, they are still recruiting volunteer marshals. There’s an attractive package lined up for those who fancy doing a solid shift of event marshalling on the obstacles including £118
Blake Johnston, of the Stamford Wine Company in St Mary’s St, finds a full-bodied wine for a heart-warming dish This month we Tim Luff have a mouthwatering recipe for you from Tim Luff at the Northwick Arms in Tinwell. A beautiful Blade of Beef with horseradish mash, the kind of heart fare that might just see you through another hideous winter like the one we have just had. Served lovely and pink with a wonderfully rich port and red wine gravy, and a healthy kick from the horseradish in the mash. I have paired this recipe with a nice full bodied Malbec from Mendoza (in my book the only place Malbec should come from!). This Argentinean wine is deep, dark and plummy, perfectly poised to tango with this red meat dish, and will not be lost under the Horseradish. There are some good spicy, smokey notes here too, which when coupled with the herbs running through Tim’s recipe provide instant enjoyment. Wine from Argentina represents very good value, and due to the high altitude of the vines, yields are typically lower than others, giving very intense fruit flavours. Highly recommended. • Pulenta Estate Malbec 2010, Mendoza, Argentina. 16.99 reduced to 14.99 for one month. And the recipe is available at www.thestamfordwinecompany.com
worth of goodies and benefits for all those who volunteer. This includes a party & camping ticket, food & beer vouchers, T-Shirt, Goody Bag etc! The after party will be amazing, featuring a great band line up including Ocean Colour Scene and local favourites The Harrington Blues. This is going to be a great day. The marshals play a really important role by cheering on the runners, motivating them to go on and keeping a close eye on anyone who needs support. Great for all ages, ideally 16yrs+ (please note that anyone under 18yrs must be accompanied by an adult) individuals, families, friends, team building - ticks every box for a really great time! Cancer Research UK is the official charity of Rat Race Events. Many of the runners opt to take a Rat Race challenge for Cancer Research helping more people to beat cancer. • If you would like to be a volunteer marshal call Rosie Maclennan on 07793 655673. NORTON RICKETT ESTATE AGENTS & GRANGE FARM LEISURE CONTINUE TO EXPAND Nicholas Rudd-Jones spent a morning at Grange Farm, catching up with Norton Rickett as well as taking a look at the leisure activities offered on the farm, where their office is located Norton Rickett Estate Agents, located at Wittering Grange Cottage on Grange Farm, have had a very successful first six months of business. Their three strong team - Paul Norton, Nick Rickett and Louise Fox – has now established the business firmly in the town, country & equestrian market. I caught up with Nick Rickett to find out how the business is progressing. “Very well,” he told me. “We have taken instructions and sold properties throughout the region, including Helpston, Ketton, Water Newton and Wansford. We have classic rural Georgian properties, equestrian properties, barn conversions, properties offering value & charm to the north and east of Stamford and much else besides.” “We tailor our marketing approach to every property – sometimes a ‘for sale’ sign is appropriate, sometimes it’s not (a recent ‘for sale’ sign was spotted by a local person
whilst out riding; she had always dreamt of owning the property and now it is hers). We always create top quality brochures and photos that give a strong visual impression. And where appropriate, we shoot a video tour that can really bring a house to life before you have visited it. All these things maximise the chances of finding the right buyer for the right home and creating a good sale.” The team is experienced, confident and diligent; and this is reflected in many favourable vendor comments. Here’s one: “We have been very impressed right from the start with the friendly, honest service you have given us. No empty promises but professional, prompt attention to detail. Your knowledge of the local market while handling the transaction proved invaluable to us throughout the buying and selling process. In a difficult economic climate, you negotiated a good price for our home
The office and we would, and are, highly recommending Norton Rickett to any future home seller or buyer. Many thanks. ” There is also a new, revised website, that can be found at www.nortonrickett.co.uk . It is crisp, clear, professional and easy to navigate. • Norton Rickett Ltd, Wittering Grange Cottage, Old Oundle Rd, Wansford, PE8 6NR. Tel: 01780 782999. www.nortonrickett.co.uk
GRANGE FARM LEISURE After visiting the Norton Rickett team, I met with Charlotte Hollis, who manages Grange Farm Leisure. She showed me round all the activities at the farm and talked about their plans for the future. Be it business or pleasure, Grange Farm is the perfect venue for your corporate day or leisure activities. It is a versatile site with an extensive range of motorised, target sport and team building activities. Combine this with over 14 years of successful event experience and you are promised an exhilarating day out. Grange Farm Leisure offers team building days for groups of any size and can offer a huge range of country pursuits including clay pigeon-shooting, archery, falconry, off-road driving, raft-building, blindfold driving and many other team-building activities. Their recent expansion includes a semipermanent marquee that will provide a welcome reception area for the team-building days, but is also a fabulous location for a wedding, holding up to 250 people. Grange Farm offers a lovely environment for a day out or an event, and it is a very organised outfit, which means you can let them do all the planning for the day and just get on and enjoy it!

The St Mary’s Quarter gets a fresh burst of energy
The St Mary’s Quarter – St Mary’s St, St Mary’s Hill and the adjoining streets and lanes – is a hotspot for independent shops and very much one of the reasons that Stamford was recently adjudged by the Sunday Times to be ‘The Best Place to Live in Britain’. And in the last year in particular, the area has surged forward. Many new shops and services have opened, and Nicholas Rudd-Jones went out to find out more about them. Riverside upstairs
G
avin Hynes, Director of Budworth Hardcastle Property Consultants, responsible for letting many of the properties in the Quarter, is very optimistic about the economic picture: “The old Meander Shop has been let. Demand is as strong now for shops as it has been at any point in the past five years. The landlords have never simply accepted the first (or highest) offer and try and have a feel for what will work. Vacancy rates are much lower than the UK average.”

Stamford Beauty is delighted with its recent move to wonderful new premises in St Mary’s Hill. Sarah Taylor enthuses: “We have so much more space, beautiful new state of the art treatment rooms, many more walk-in customers, and our existing customers saying how ‘at ease’ they feel here. Snow Design & Interiors Camilla opened the doors at Snow Design & Interiors in February when the weather was at its worst, but was amazed by the response and support that she has had right from the start, from Stamfordians and visitors alike. Her vision was to create a vintage emporium offering eclectic gifts and home accessories; and to ‘always have something new’ so that there is a reason to come in every week. When I visited she had just taken stock of a new range of Voluspa Candles, exclusive in the region and
incredibly luxurious. There is also a stunning range of Lush lamps. You can expect to find anything; there are no rules, just beautiful products with sensible prices. The focus is on local designers, artists, photographers, potters, upholsterers, textile printers, anyone who has a natural flare for being creative. There are now 11 local designers showing their products in the shop. Snow Design & Interiors, 32 St Mary’s St, Stamford, PE9 2DS Tel: 01780 751551 www.camillasnowinteriors.com
Paradise Found Paradise Found celebrates its first anniversary this month. Owner Jackie is delighted with the way that things have gone, particularly the jewellery. She stocks the Alex Monroe, Daisy Knights, Davina Combe and Rodgers & Rodgers ranges, all of which have been very successful. She has been delighted by the response to her shop; she feels that “people in Stamford really support local businesses.” Paradise Found, 34 St Mary’s St, Stamford, PE9 2DS Tel: 01780 764439 www.facebook.com/ paradisefound34

Essence of Beauty has sailed through its first anniversary and is thriving as a health & beauty business with an enviable location. Dawson of Stamford John Dawson opened his second shop in Stamford last November, designed to have a younger feel and to be very accessible. It offers silver, vintage, engagement rings, bracelets, watches at prices starting from £40, but still offering the same quality as the ‘mother store’. It’s also a reflection of confidence on the part of an established retailer in further investment in the Quarter. Dawson of Stamford, 42 St Mary’s St, Stamford Tel: 01780 764353
Morello Ristorante & Deli Katarina and Attilio are a charming Italian couple who were drawn to Stamford by its beauty. “We were looking for a restaurant business to start,” Katarina explained, “and as soon as we took a look at this property in Barn Passage we knew it was for us. We love Stamford, and our little boy is starting here at primary school in the autumn.” Even more excitingly, a deli opens underneath the restaurant this month. Katarina enthused: “The bread will all be home made, and we will source Italian products direct from
Not to forget the ‘stalwarts’… So, all in all, a massive fresh burst of energy in the Quarter over the last year. But we mustn’t of course forget the ‘stalwarts’, the businesses that have committed to the area through thick and thin over many years – The ‘500 years + club’ - The George Hotel; the ‘20 years + club - T&C Robinson, The Stamford Music Shop, The Vac Centre, Sinclair’s, Lamb’s, Sue’s Flower House; the ‘10 years plus’ club - Sly Fashion, Arch Label Agency amongst others – without whose vision and tenacity the shopping & lifestyle experience we enjoy today would never have been possible.
Stamford Wine Company Blake Johnston is having a ball at the Stamford Wine Company shop that he opened last November; and when I went to see him he was planning a two-week chateaux trip to source his own label. It’s a tough life for some! At his shop you will find an exquisite selection of personally-selected wines, with the common theme that they are good honest wines that are not mass-produced. ith the increasing popularity of Conservatories, Orangeries and Summer Houses, people are trying to blend the beauty of their garden with the comfort of the inside. However, now that summer is finally making its appearance, there are plenty of luxury outside goodies waiting to tempt us to make that step across the threshold and go al fresco.
Sit Back and Relax
John Lewis has a large range of outdoor beanbags, hammocks, deck chairs and swing seats which are suitable for all the family; along with more permanent fixtures such as Gazebos, Summer Houses and the very cool looking Garden Pods!
Outdoor Heating
If you want to warm up on those chilly evenings, traditional, Mexican clay ‘Chiminea’ is perfect to keep you just as toasty as an electric heater and can even be used to grill foods over open flames for that authentic smoky taste! They come in a range of designs and colours to blend into your existing garden surroundings. Similarly, a ‘Firepit’ can be another attractive source of heat as the evenings cool down to keep your guests warm outside. Vale Garden Houses in Grantham (www. valegardenhouses.co.uk) are experts in the field of luxury looking, comfortable and durable home products. Their range of outdoor conservatory furniture is a collection of weather resistant synthetic weaves over aluminium frames. They offer classic brand names including Bridgman & Vincent Sheppard – each has a reputation for superior quality and great design. Daytime Picnics
There is also now an abundance of outdoor eating accessories from the traditional to the fun, so head out with your picnic baskets packed and enjoy your feast.
Bounce or Climb? Outdoor Arty Fun Outdoor Cooking
There is nothing that officially marks the beginning of the summer more than the smell of firing up your BBQ for the first time. The whole outdoor eating experience never fails to fascinate and often sees a complete role reversal to kitchen duties, with the men reverting to ‘hunter/gatherer’ status and getting competitive over how best to cook sausages over a naked flame! At John Lewis there is a BBQ to suit all budgets from the economical £29 ‘House Portable Kettle Barbecue’ to top of the range £5,999 ‘Weber Summit S670 Grill Centre with Social Area’ for those optimistic souls wanting to dine outside with friends for the entire summer! But the majority of John Lewis BBQs slotting somewhere in between these two price points! Lamb’s in St Peter’s St also has an excellent range of BBQs.
More quirky outdoor products are some of the mirrors you can mount in your garden to create a Trompe l’oeil illusion of space. These ‘Window Ajar Mirrors’ are designed to give the appearance of an open timber window and makes a blank wall appear as if it’s just the beginning of something further to explore, resulting in even the smallest of gardens appearing larger than they actually are. Outdoor art is also an excellent method for creating a space that demonstrates your own personal style. Whether you have a large sprawling lawn or a simple roof terrace, garden art will create a spectacular focal point in your garden, allowing you to brighten dark corners or add interest to your lawn. Watercolour Fish Outdoor Canvas Print - £99 Available from: www.greensquares.co.uk
Need some entertainment for the little ones while the adults enjoy dining al fresco? From croquet, boules, giant jenga and chess, there’s plenty of healthy outdoor pursuits to keep little minds alert and away from the all too addictive indoor gaming consoles. For more rigorous exercise a trampoline is great fun for the whole family.

STA M FOR D PE OPLE
Thank you, Mr Skells
Richard Barry learns about the admirable Harry Skells, whose Trust Fund continues to do so much for Stamford, most recently providing much of the money for the splendid new sundial overlooking Red Lion Square
T
o mark two important anniversaries in 2012 – the Queen’s Jubilee and the 50th anniversary of the founding of the Stamford Civic Society – it seemed like a good idea to replace the illegible old sundial on the south parapet of All Saints’ Church with a new one. Sundials don’t come cheap – top quality stone, technical design expertise, exquisite handcarving, decoration including plenty of gold leaf, and there’s no change out of £8,000.
Enter Mr Skells In his Will, Harry Skells bequeathed a capital sum to Stamford and stipulated that the income it generated should be spent on the “appearance, utility and amenity” of public places noting, in particular, parks and recreation grounds and what today would be termed “street-scene improvement”. He entrusted the spending duty to “the Mayor, Aldermen and Burgesses of the Borough of Stamford”. It’s a pity that these lovely titles are no longer in use here. Instead, the spending duties are discharged by the Skells Trustees comprising the Mayor and the Town Councillors. The Stamford Civic Society – which took on the task of managing the sundial project – recently received a generous grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund to conserve the old sundial (and for much else besides). But the HLF was less than enthusiastic about paying for a modern replacement sundial. Fortunately the Civic Society had already been promised donations of £3,000 towards the £8,000 cost of a new sundial. For the additional balance of £5,000 the Civic Society applied, successfully, to the Skells Trustees, to whom it is very grateful.
Who was Harry Skells? Sugar beet executive; labour manager; land agent; international consultant; National Savings vice chairman and medal-winner; founder of the local Young Farmers’ Club; member of the All Saints’ PCC and Stamford Town Councillor. A man of formidable drive and energy, these weren’t jobs he did one after the other; he did most of them at the same time. One other thing -- during the First World War he served in the Royal Army Medical Corps. Born in 1880, Harry Skells married Margaret Perkins in 1916. She was 42, which probably explains why they had no children. They lived the last 14 years of his life at Bancroft Lodge in King’s Road, where he died on the evening of 14th September 1955, just as he got home from a Town Council committee meeting (one currently serving Council wit said “Not surprising, we all feel like that after committee meetings”).
The Will His Will shows that Harry Skells owned two properties – Bancroft Lodge and Seaton Grange Farm in Rutland. He left Bancroft to his wife. The farm was tenanted, the tenant paying about £1,000 a year and this income went to his wife during her lifetime. On her death, Skells stipulated that the farm would pass to Stamford. Margaret Skells died on 24th January 1962, at which point the town became the owner of Seaton Grange Farm with 356 acres, a farm house and two cottages. The farm needed many costly improvements so the town received little net benefit from the rental income. Since Harry Skells’s intention was clearly charitable, the
Charity Commissioners agreed that the farm could be auctioned providing the proceeds were placed in a registered charity account (239573 – you can see its detail on the CC website). Richardson’s auctioned the farm and land for £51,500 in March 1965, a much better price than had been expected -- the Charity Commissioners had set a (confidential) reserve of £35,000. The buyer was the Rockingham Castle estate.
The Trust The £51,500 from the sale was placed in the Charities Official Investment Fund (COIF). This is run by the fund-manager CCLA with the instruction to manage it in a balanced way, seeking capital and income growth. In the 47 years since then, CCLA has achieved a compound growth of capital plus income of 10.3% per annum. A shade more than half of this (5.3%) has been capital growth -- over 47 years increasing the capital from £51,500 to £576,000 today. Roughly 5% is received as annual income: in 2012, for example, this amounted to £27,000. Over the last decade the Skells Trustees have made 37 grants totalling £200,000 -- an average of £5,400 each. The largest grant was £25,900 in 2008 for the lift in the Corn Exchange theatre. When Heather Lamont, who runs CCLA, mentioned that she expects to visit Stamford next year I suggested she take a look at the new sundial to see the good work done by the Skells Trust and its Trustees.
Epigram on a lonely airfield Richard Barry writes: Take the lane west from Aslackby until you come to the gate on the perimeter of the abandoned Folkingham airfield. The right-hand concrete gatepost carries this fine epigram. The epigram reads: “Time wastes our bodies and our wits But we waste time so we’re quits” Who wrote it and when? The airfield was built in
1943, and this gatepost is probably original. As to the author – he or she may owe something to Shakespeare. Our neighbour David Lankester points out that Richard II said something slightly similar (Act V Scene V) “I wasted time and now doth time waste me”. Perhaps the author was a conscripted Eng Lit graduate with too little to do. Our thanks to Mr P K McCarthy, who drew this to our attention.

A passion for Sport Bob Feetham, former Chairman of Stamford AFC and owner of the Rutland Times, takes a look at what’s going on locally in the sporting world
Stamford Indoor Bowls Club
Pictured from the left are (back row), Louise Harris, Jon Bailey, sponsor Ian Lee, Jay TravisJenner, Katie Bailey, Front: Nathan Rigby, Jonathan Chambers, Stephen Harris. Stamford Indoor Bowls Club has made massive progress in many areas of the sport – and one aspect currently attracting widespread attention is the blossoming talent among their junior members. There have been a number of tournament successes, 15-year-old Queen Eleanor School pupils Stephen Harris and Jon Bailey both chalking up notable successes in key events and handling considerable pressure to do so. Stephen won a thrilling junior championship final against Spalding’s Jordan Philpott, also reaching the club’s singles final; while Jon Bailey truly excelled as he beat defending champion Jon Randall in the Northants Federation under-25 tournament. Bob Warters, Stamford IBC’s publicity officer, commented : “The club is thrilled by the
progress and the good impressions the juniors are making among the members and within the local counties. “They are showing a growing maturity and starting to develop as quality performers under pressure, underlined by Jon Bailey and Stephen Harris.” He continued: “The club also has great hopes for Nathan Rigby, Jay Travis Jenner, both members of the championship-winning B team, as well as the improving Jonathan Chambers and our two girl juniors Louise Harris and Katie Bailey.” Impressed by their dedication, sportsmanship and respect for the game, the club’s junior team have been sponsored by local businessman Ian Lee for their smart navy and white kit. • Find out more at www.stamfordindoorbowls.co.uk
Rutland Cricket League There are 46 teams competing in the Rutland Cricket League this season across seven divisions. Fixtures started last month, running through to October, and include such teams as Long Sutton, St Ives, Rothwell and Eaton Socon. That’s a far cry from 1982 when nine teams founded the competition. They were Barnack, Ketton, Market Deeping, Market Overton, Oundle Town, Stamford, Ufford Park, Uppingham and Brotherhoods, the latter folding in 1985. All credit to the remaining eight who have been an important part of the competition, while also looking to develop their own youth cricket.
Rutland County Golf Club
Rutland County Golf Club is waving goodbye to one of its favourite sons – Ollie Freckingham has just signed professional terms with Leicestershire County Cricket. Leaving after a 15 year association with the Rutland Club, both as employee and member, the 23 year-old Freckingham has spearheaded the A team for eight years, been club champion for six years and holds the course amateur record of 65. He has been a valued green keeper at the club for five years but is naturally looking forward to his new career as a right-arm ‘quickie’. Club manager, Steve Lowe said: “Ollie will be sorely missed by us all – you couldn’t meet a nicer lad. We are all very proud of him at the club and wish him all the best with his cricketing career. We’ll be watching out for him on the telly!”
The Daniels Stadium Approved Stamford AFC’s new ground and sports educational facility moved a massive step nearer when South Kesteven District Council’s Development Control Committee granted detailed planning consent. Innovative Partnership plans, brought together by the football club, Burghley House Preservation Trust/Burghley Estate Leisure Limited and New College Stamford secured permission subject to planning conditions. Stamford AFC director of football Guy Walton said: “The club is committed to the partnership’s vision of an education and sporting facility. This particular project will deliver an innovative solution to the sporting demands of our community”. New College Stamford Principal, Andrew Patience, commented: “We will have a fantastic facility which will greatly benefit the whole town.” David Pennell, Burghley House Preservation Trust, added: “We think this project presents the town with an exciting opportunity.” The club hopes to move into the new stadium for the 2014/15 season..

A Day Out In…
Northampton
ART & CULTURE
The recent creation of a ‘Cultural Quarter’ in the Guildhall Rd and Derngate reflects the city’s growing appeal to visitors. The jewel in the crown is undoubtedly 78 Derngate, which is the only Mackintoshdesigned house in the UK. This is reason enough on its own for a visit to Northampton. See our focus article. Also of considerable interest is the Northampton Museum & Art Gallery on Guildhall Rd. In recognition of the town’s heritage, the museum houses the largest collection of objects charting the history of shoes in the world. The ground floor is dedicated to the display of footwear from ancient Egyptian times through to the present, which gets everyone talking (‘how did they stand on those?!’ or, ‘Oh my, I remember wearing shoes like those…’) The Shoe Lounge showcases current designers and manufacturers. Entry is free, Tue-Sat 10am - 5pm, Sun 2pm5pm
Northampton Market
Not many people we know would consider Northampton as a destination for a ‘day out’. But with its impressive Victorian & Edwardian architecture and a history as the UK’s shoe-making industry centre in the 19th and early 20th century, there’s lots to see and do in Northampton, as Nicholas Rudd-Jones discovered WHAT TO SEE AND DO
The town centre is based around St Giles St, The Ridings, The Guildhall and The Market Square with an array of independent shops and cafés and impressive architecture. The most impressive Victorian building of all is The Guildhall, Built in 1864 by Edward Godwin in the ‘Ruskinian Gothic’ style, it’s now the offices of the Northampton All Saints’ Borough Council and is also Church available for events/weddings. All Saints’ Church, George Row. There’s been a church on this spot for the past 1000 years, but the one you see now only came into existence after the great fire of 1675. Charles II contributed 1000 tons of timber from the Royal forests of Salcey and Rockingham for its re-building. To the rear of the church is Northampton’s War Memorial, designed by Sir Edward Lutyens, who also designed the Cenotaph. Find out more at www. allsaintsnorthampton.co.uk

Heading west on foot towards the station, you will come to St Peter’s, described as one of ‘the most outstanding Norman churches in the country’. The east end was rebuilt by Sir George Gilbert Scott in the 1850s and the whole church was re-roofed at that time (see www.fostp.org.uk for more info). It is no longer used as a place of worship but is open for visitors and is well worth visiting. The most distinctive feature of the church is the original Norman intricately carved stone column capital heads, each unique and hand-carved in the 12th century by artisan stone masons. 78 Derngate is a Grade II* listed Georgian house, originally built in the 1820s. It was re-modelled in 1916 and 1917 by Charles Rennie Mackintosh for its forward-looking owner Mr. WJ Bassett-Lowke, a wellknown local businessman, model maker and advocate of functional modern design. It is Mackintosh’s only significant work in England. Pamela Robertson, Professor of Mackintosh Studies at the Hunterian Art Gallery, University of Glasgow, says: “78 Derngate is of major importance in Mackintosh’s career. In terms of creative content, it is his most significant piece of design work after leaving Glasgow. The interiors strikingly and successfully combine visual impact with, for its day, high-tech infrastructure and the efficient and hygienic use of space.” We went on a tour, lasting just over an hour, which was a delight from start to finish. The house, although small, has something of interest in every room, and the guide has many quirky stories to tell. It is the Dining Room and Guest Bedroom that will take your breath away, not least for their sheer feel of modernity. Next to the house there is now a visitors’ centre, comprising art gallery and café/restaurant, also both recommended. Tue-Sun 10.00am 5.00pm. Last entry 4.30 pm. Closed Mondays, (except Bank Holidays). Guided tours are recommended but not mandatory. Call ahead to book 82 Derngate Northampton NN1 1UH Tel: 01604 603407 www.78derngate.org.uk

S
tanding in the reception area of Oundle Mill, it’s hard to believe that the boutique hotel and restaurant was engulfed by four feet of river water last November. The renovations are complete: the stone flagged floor and luxurious squashy sofas are immaculate, and the river, now well behaved, is only visible flowing under the glass floor. We went upstairs to the chic restaurant: sleek black tables, chairs and napkins which contrast with the rustic beams and walls. We had been offered a tasting menu, showcasing head chef Gavin Austin’s many talents, and it was exciting to be taken on a gastronomic journey. First, we shared duck egg with wild garlic custard, St George’s mushrooms and a tarragon hollandaise. The egg was rich and savoury, with a sunny orange yolk, and sat on top of a disc of custard, with the hollandaise around the edges. It was the perfect spring dish of pretty greens and yellows. Wild garlic has a more subtle taste than the standard kind, and I loved the way the dish was garnished with tiny scraps of the leaves. A squid ink risotto with fried squid and squid crackers followed. This was a beautiful and original dish: the dark bluish risotto was creamy, the richness cut through with a hint of basil oil. The crisp crackers, a gourmet take on prawn crackers, were made with tapioca, and represented a brilliant touch. A lovely contrast to the risotto was the Elton rabbit (yes, sourced from the village of Elton, just down the road) with carrot purée, pickled vegetables and crispy shallots, which combined sweet and sour tastes. Slivers of tender rabbit, which tasted almost smoked, came with zesty pickled veg, all contrasting with the sweetness of the carrot purée. The Var salmon with broccoli, Brancaster mussels and korma foam was an interesting combination. Chef Gavin chooses Var salmon from the Faroe Islands, because, although farmed, it is the closest taste to wild salmon that can be found.
Our final dish tied for first place as my favourite along with the rabbit: this was corn fed Goosnargh chicken, bacon dumplings, spring vegetables with a lightly truffled chicken broth. There were so many skills involved in this seemingly straightforward plateful, right down to the single triangle of crispy skin which melted in the mouth. The tiny bacon dumplings added just the right richness to the chicken, and it was served with baby carrots which tasted as if they’d just been pulled out of the ground. Our shared dessert was a kind of deconstructed lemon meringue pie. There was a lemon sherbet jelly, with lemon curd, shards of meringue and a homemade lemon meringue ice cream, finished with tarragon syrup. Again, a perfect spring dessert, tangy, light and fresh with a sensationally pretty colour palette. Presentation is immaculate, service is exemplary, but the flavours rule, which is just as it should be. You can dine for £14.95 for three courses on Thursdays in April and May, which represents superb value for money. Or, try the set menu, from £12.50, available daily excluding Thursdays, Saturday evening and Sunday lunch times. A four course ‘tasting menu’ is £37.50. • Oundle Mill, Barnwell Road, Oundle, Northants. PE8 5PB www.oundlemill.co.uk Tel: 01832 272621

W
hen you go to The Crown you really do feel that you are in the heart of the town; and with two huge bay windows overlooking the square and the church, it’s tempting to buy a drink and linger awhile before your meal. In fact we liked the view and the ambience in the bar so much that we decided to have our dinner there too. And that speaks to one of the great strengths of the service, its flexibility, no raised eyebrows, just an efficient re-placing of our places. Mind you, after the meal, we took a look at the main dining room and rather regretted that we hadn’t given that a try; a very different atmosphere, a more formal party feel. And what of the food? Well, first of all, an excellent new spring menu. My walking companion Oliver picked the Baked Mushrooms for starters and declared himself very pleased with them. I enjoyed the Goat’s Cheese and sun dried tomato, both neatly presented on slates. For mains we both had something very substantial – after all, we had a big walking
trip planned for the following day. Oliver went for the Pot Roasted Lamb Shank with redcurrants and rosemary on mash; I chose the Slow Braised local partridge with root vegetables, lentils and barley, mash potato. Both dishes were tasty and filling. For dessert we shared an apple filo parcel coated with cinnamon sugar, with berry compote and Calvados ice cream. Perfect. The British cheese selection also looked very good, but we didn’t quite make it to that. Good food, great ambience and outstanding beer in the heart of Stamford, Britain’s Best Place to Live. How much better could it get?! • The Crown Hotel, 6 All Saints’ Place, Stamford, PE9 2AG 01780 763136. www.thecrownhotelstamford.co.uk

FOOD & DR INK
A Taste of Culinary Heritage Norfolk Saffron
Sally Francis is growing the world’s most precious spice within sight and sound of the sea at the family’s Norfolk smallholding near Burnham Market. Sarah Lyon is surprised to learn that historically, home grown saffron was indispensable in English cookery. A cook herself, she is fascinated to find out more about this unique spice that gives a wonderful golden colour and a flowery, honey-like, yet slightly bitter, flavour to food “Our saffron cultivation started with a birthday present from my mother Jill of just 20 corms in 1997,” explains Sally, an agricultural botanist and freelance consultant with a long-standing interest in alternative crops. “Multiplying up our stock of plants and gaining more experience of the crop, we began selling our saffron in 2009.” “We grow our saffron using traditional methods where minimising our impact on the environment is extremely important to us. The saffron does not receive chemical sprays and is grown in proper crop rotation to ensure sustainability,” enthuses Sally. And adds, “The crop is painstakingly harvested by hand where 150-200 flowers must be gathered then trimmed to yield each single gram of dried saffron. It consists of the rich, deep red stigmas from the season’s flower crop. Saffron is a perennial plant and so occupies the land for several years. In autumn, short leaves emerge from the bare ground of the saffron beds, and the mauve flowers quickly follow. Harvest happens in October and lasts a few weeks where flowers are picked daily before they fully open. The red parts of the saffron threads are carefully taken out of each single flower, all by hand. We then carefully dry the saffron, which also develops the flavour.” “None of this was planned by design,” says Sally. “The climate and soil were just right for growing saffron but none of us knew this at the time.” Sally’s research unearthed a forgotten story and revealed that many villages around the area were famous for saffron growing in the day when England had a reputation for excellent quality saffron, a little known fact when they started their cultivation of this astonishing spice. The area around Walsingham, a nearby village, was famous for its saffron from the Middle Ages to the Georgian period where knowledge on growing and harvesting it would have been common place, a knowledge that Sally and her family have discovered all over again. SALLY SAYS: Saffron – A Female Crop Three saffron strands in each flower is normal, a flower with 4 strands is called a princess, 5 strands a queen and 6 becomes an empress

Cookery Note – Wonderfully rich and potent, Sally advises crumbling a few strands of saffron by hand or use a pestle and mortar to break up before using to allow the vibrant colour and flavour to come through fully. Some recipes will call for a pinch of saffron. Because of the vitality and intensity of Sally’s Grade 1 saffron, gauge and replicate a recipe with counted strands. Meet the Brewster

I
f you ever go to the Olive Branch in Clipsham, or maybe the Jolly Brewer, Tobie Norris or Green Man in Stamford, you may well have enjoyed a beer brewed by Sara Barton. Sara is the founder of Grantham’s Brewster’s Brewing Company and she’s become one of our local region’s food and drink stars. Sara’s had a simply amazing 12 months: not long ago she received a mystery phone call that turned out to be from Jamie Oliver’s TV people. One of her beers – Brewster’s Pale Ale – had been chosen by Mr Oliver to represent Britain in his Food Fight TV show. Then, just a few weeks later, Sara was named Guild of British Beer Writers’ Brewer of the Year at a glittering award ceremony in London. Sara founded Brewster’s Brewing Company in 1998 and at the time was one of only a small handful of female brewers in the UK. Here’s a bit of social history that might surprise you: before the industrial revolution, most brewers were actually women (then known as ‘brewsters’), but then men, sniffing huge beery profits after the birth of the steam engine, decided that this brewing lark was their cup of tea after all. “Going back to medieval times, both bread making and brewing were female roles,” says Sara. “Many widows brewed beer as a way of making ends meet. But after industrialisation, the large breweries took over.” Now, led by Sara from her Grantham base, the brewster is back. All over the UK, female beer producers are fermenting and mashing again, with Sara helping to blaze the trail. She has set up Project Venus – an initiative to bring female brewers together and promote drinking beer to women in general. The project has resulted in a collaboration between 14 brewsters from up and down the country who have pooled knowledge to produce several beers. But Sara is keen to point out that it’s not who brews the beer that counts, but rather the taste of the final product. And in addition to the TV fame received for her hoppy and refreshing Pale Ale – now available behind the bar in the Olive Branch – Brewster’s beers have picked up several gold medals over the years. One recent winner was its German-style lager called Helles. And a cask ale, Hophead – a regular at the Jolly Brewer in Stamford and Ship Inn in Oundle – is another Brewster’s award winner. Sara founded Brewsters 15 years ago and spent the first eight brewing in an outbuilding behind her parents’ house in Stathern, Leicestershire. In 2006 she moved to an industrial unit in Grantham and in February 2012 added two gleaming ‘cylindroconical’ vessels to her 10-barrel (1600-litre) set-up. “You can both brew and condition in them,” says Sara. But despite the technical appearance of the various vats and pipes, it’s worth remembering that all that goes into her beers are local water, Brewster’s own yeast, barley grown in Lincolnshire About the writer and malted in Grantham, and hops from around the Matt Wright world. founded and runs It’s tribute to Sara’s knowledge and her passion Greatfoodmag.co.uk and Greatfoodclub.co.uk, for brewing that Brewster’s is thriving and two Leicestershireproducing award-winning beers. It’s great that the based websites that area has such a success story, so why not track celebrate and promote down some of her excellent brews? local food and drink.
Marquis The second beer that Brewster’s produced – Marquis – was brewed specially for a TV programme about John Manners, Marquis of Granby (1721 to 1770). Son of the 3rd Duke of Rutland, the Marquis commanded an army in Germany during the Seven Years’ War. He returned to England a hero and improved his stock further by giving pensions to his soldiers. Many of them set up pubs with the cash, which is why there are so many called The Marquis of Granby. Sara’s Marquis of Granby pub is in Granby village near Bingham, Notts, and thought to be the original.

STAM FOR D PE OPLE
ORCHARD:
TRANSFORMING YOUR SPACE Antonia Scott spoke to Mark Atkinson and Mark Bush to hear how their business, Orchard grew from humble beginnings to the success it is today.
The Early Days Orchard began business in 2001 as a modest ‘two men and a van’ set-up, simply fitting PVC windows. In the ensuing 12 years, they have grown into a high-end home improvement service that provides a complete design and installation package for all your Kitchen, Bathroom and Conservatory requirements. There are now two showrooms in Stamford, one dedicated to Kitchens, Bedrooms and Bathrooms, which Maxine Couch the Head Designer oversees, and the other showcasing various styles of Orangeries, Conservatories, energy efficient windows and doors, along with the latest ‘Ultraframe Glass Roofing’ systems. Now with a fleet of 12 vans employing 20 people, Orchard predominantly works locally, but are also able to travel nationwide for larger projects. GROWING EXPERTISE Matthew Rudkin joined Orchard 2 years ago to head up a new division: Orchard Building Contractors Ltd. He brought a wealth of knowledge and understanding of how to manage and deliver large scale construction projects across the country. With his skilled team of Tradesmen, Matthew ensures projects are seen though from planning to completion. This side of the business now has its own dedicated estimating department which will shortly be expanding into new offices. Entire Projects Orchard grew largely because so many of their
62
clients wanted a company that could manage their whole renovation project, from installing the latest A rated windows throughout the house, or installing bi-folding door systems, to complete kitchen installations that require removing external walls to form large living spaces, or carrying out full house renovations. So Mark decided to create a business that would be able to look after the entire project, including seeking all relevant building regulations, all necessary electrical and gas installations and flooring requirements. He wanted his clients to get complete peace of mind that every aspect was taken care of. Things you didn’t know about Orchard Orchard are Stamford’s largest supplier and installer of the ‘Rock’ door range – the most energy efficient and secure door available today. They are all made in the UK and come in various styles and colours, including the best seller, the “Stable Door.” Orchard is the only local supplier and installer of the ‘Evolution Storm 2 Timber Alternative Windows.’ Orchard’s showroom has the latest design software to bring your kitchen to life. All quotes, advice and designs are entirely free of charge, with no obligation.
In a Nutshell Orchard are proud to offer a complete project management service so their clients have nothing to worry about from start to finish. With a superb range of kitchen, bedroom and bathrooms designs to suit all tastes and budgets, from high-end glass contemporary finishes to the more traditional bespoke handpainted items. Also, windows, Conservatories and Orangeries, backed up by a full building service. With an experienced, dedicated team behind them, the two Marks really have branched out to make Orchard deserve its huge popularity and many positive testimonials from satisfied customers. • Contact details: www.orchardstamford. co.uk.
