Stamford Living celebrates its 10th anniversary this month; and we aim to do today exactly what we said on the front cover of the first issue: “Helping you to get the most out of Stamford.” The biggest change to our life as publishers over that period has undoubtedly been the internet, both as an opportunity and a threat. We were only able to set up the magazine in the way that we did because of the internet – mostly working from home and communicating by email. And now nearly every bit of our business depends upon it: researching articles, receiving photos and copy from contributors, communicating internally, downloading photos, sending the pages to the printer, paying distributors, receiving money from advertisers, selling booklets online etc. etc. And of course at the same time the internet has been a threat to our business as more and more people go online and fewer read printed matter. Only this month the Peterborough Evening Telegraph has had to switch from being a daily to a weekly. We have responded to the internet by having a strong website and being very active users of social networking. But we also believe that so long as we produce a visually strong, good read - and get it into your hands - then there will continue to be a demand for the printed product – that’s our plan anyway, and thank you for all your support over the years! Fingers crossed for another ten years.

s an established company, Steve Rudkin Electrical Contractors have also been installing solar PV panels domestically and commercially since April 11, and would like to reassure anyone who might be interested in having solar panels fitted that the new Feed in Tariff rates, (21p for up to a 4kW system), are and should still be considered a worthwhile investment. Due to reductions in costs of solar materials these new tariff rates still provide a reasonable rate of return of 8-12%, along with reducing energy bills and in lowering your carbon emissions. As further tariff rate changes are expected in July they would advise getting a quote as soon as possible. Registered with the NICEIC as an Approved Electrical Contractor and the Microgeneration Certification Scheme (MCS) Solar Photovoltaic (PV) installer, Steve Rudkin Electrical Contractors have always been pro-active
with the integration and use of energy saving technologies. They provide a no-obligation survey and design through to the final installation test and commissioning of the solar system. Full technical and administrative support is provided throughout the process and

IT REALLY ISN’T. ROCKET SCIENCE.
Geoff Chamberlain used to be our. traffic warden – and most people . were happy about it most of the time,. because he used his common sense. and a good dose of humour.
PARTY TIME.
St George’s Square folk love to party. They last had a. street party in the Golden Jubilee year, and another is. planned for the Diamond Jubilee.
STOPPING AT. NOTHING.
There was a shipyard (of sorts). in Hudd’s Mill Lane – a cunning. ploy to escape the east-west. bypass proposed at the time. In. the shipbuilder Graham Morgan’s. words: “We thought we’d build. ourselves a ship and sail off to a. new life as water-gypsies.”.
PUB NAMES. Ask Leo was getting to the bottom of important local. issues, such as why the Drum and Monkey pub was so. called. “A one-legged knife sharpener used to travel. along the old Great North Road with his drum and a. monkey entertaining pub regulars in return for a pint.. Unfortunately he was run over outside by a cart and. killed. In his memory the pub was renamed the Drum. and Monkey.”.
THE ‘PULL’ OF. STAMFORD.
We asked people how they. first discovered Stamford.. Mr B Edwards arrived in. 1954 by a caravan built. by her Dad, and lived in. Empingham Rd on the. POW site until they bought. a house in Ryhall in 1958..

Feel Better Today S
tress is a part of life, but when lots of little stresses and some big ones happen in a relatively short period of time, we may feel overwhelmed and lose our ability to cope well. Severe stress can lead to disturbed sleep and physical symptoms such as frequent migraines, back ache or stomach cramps. Sadly for some people, life can become dominated by fears, anxieties, panic attacks or depression. Therapists and counsellors working from the ‘Human Givens’ approach view these symptoms as signs that important emotional needs are not being met – (maybe our lives feel lonely, too demanding or meaningless). ‘Human Givens’ therapists use a range of proven, effective techniques to help people make the necessary changes in their lives, and to learn healthy coping strategies which enable them to move on with their lives as quickly as possible. Francesca Farino is a chartered psychologist and ‘Human Givens’ therapist working locally, with consulting rooms in King’s Cliffe and Peterborough. She has experience in helping people suffering from all kinds of emotional distress. • For more information, or to make an appointment, contact Francesca on 07746 835153 or by email at: francesca@hgee.org.uk
Every home is different
It used to be that you just bought a ‘Hoover’ or a ‘Henry’ and you were done with it. But vacuum cleaner technology has moved on apace and now there is a solution for every type of house and floor covering. And who better to help you to the best solution than Nick who runs the Vac Centre. Here are his recommendations: • ‘Traditional House’ - stone floors, wood floors, but also carpet. Go for the AEG Ultraone, with superior suck quality • ‘Contemporary family home’ – kids’ mess and pets. Go for Dyson Animal upright. Best on carpets and stairs, and very robust • ‘Smaller house’ – convenience, storage & lightness is a priority. Go for a Vax Mach Air. It’s the lightest, full-size vacuum on the market. The Vac Centre has the biggest selection of new cleaners at the best prices in the region. Don’t be fooled by the expensive national advertising, support your local • The Vac Centre, 18 St. Mary’s Street, Stamford PE9 2DG. Tel: 01780 482935
Limetree Emma Cannings and James Clipston have launched a unique business at the Stamford Garden Centre. Their new company Limetree has converted one of the wooden buildings into a shop with a separate workshop. Limetree produces a range of beautiful handmade furniture which can be purchased in the shop. However, you are also welcome to customise the furniture to suit your exact needs. Perhaps you would love their dining room table but would prefer it a little longer. Maybe the dresser and wine racks inspire you but wish they were a little wider or used a different type of wood. Your unique piece will be hand built and marked with the Limetree logo. Any of the furniture can be finished using the luxury Fired Earth paint range. Limetree have also partnered with a number of national and local suppliers to offer a unique range of homewares. From stunning clocks, to coasters and bookends, or the full range of Fired Earth paints and wallpapers. Whether you buy straight from the shop or choose to ask Limetree to help create a bespoke piece you can be sure to come away with something very unique. • There are more details on their website (http://limetree.uk.com) or visit the shop and the workshop at the Stamford Garden Centre.
Paradise Found A charming new jewellery and gift shop has recently opened in St Mary’s St. Jackie Seago, the owner, was drawn to the area by the strength of the independent shops all around. The shop has lots of interesting things in it. In Jackie’s words “We are trying to offer something different to everybody else.” I was drawn to the printing stamps (featuring many different motifs, including butterflies and botany) and the gorgeous wrapping paper. But the ‘tour de force’ of the shop is jewellery; with Alex Munroe and Daisy Knights being two of the key brands. There are also pieces of furniture to buy. Pop by – you are bound to find something you like. • Paradise Found, 34 St Mary’s St., Stamford, PE9 Tel: 01780 764439

FASHION – TEN YEARS ON
PERFECT
10 Sally Stillingfleet gets the low down from Stamford’s independent retailers looking back on the past ten years, in fashion and beyond
T
he last 10 years of fashion in Stamford – crikey I really cannot remember! My eldest daughter Hannah was seven and Ellie just four. It probably felt like a blur but I can remember being really into Gap colourful three quarter length trousers and brightly coloured T-shirts! But what has really happened on Stamford’s streets over the years? I have enlisted the help of fashion’s finest – independent retailers who have been in business for ten years or more – Happy Birthday Black Orchid - 26 this year!
What has been the most significant fashion shift in the past 10 years? Retailers agreed that ‘casualisation’ of clothing has had the biggest impact. Uschi Veitch, owner of Georgi Collection described it so: “The structured tailored look has almost gone – work and play are almost the same.” Genevieve Potter (SL Fashion Editor 2005 – 2010) described it as a “blurring of fashion boundaries”. I certainly agree that when Aunty Mary wore a cardigan to our wedding almost twenty years ago she was way ahead of her time, a fashion choice my Mother has never forgiven her for! I bet weddings are now awash with cardigans. Sandra from ‘So’ cites the rise of the skirt length and body-conscious clothing. Belinda Sly sees the rise of internet use as the biggest competition and the ability to see whole outfits from the comfort of an armchair. Sarah, owner of Energy is well aware that even the guys are getting into fashion. She has seen an increase in men wearing coloured trousers, which have become better tailored. “I think 10 years ago our customers were more ‘surfy’.”
Can you pinpoint a specific look or item of clothing, which became 8
Local fashion owners in 2009
‘big’ or a style of clothing that has evolved over the last 10 years, which has become significant? Belinda’s shop has lots of lovely Pumps – “years ago flat shoes were not very exciting or fashionable!” Sandra describes how skinny jeans and leggings have become ‘de rigeur’ in the wardrobes of ladies young and old. Giselle Brannan, owner of Chameleon has seen a more body-conscious customer with specific requirements for ‘Shapewear’. “Nowadays fashion styles require cleverly designed underwear to be able to wear different necklines and low cut styles. More sophisticated and better fitting underwear makes all the difference to an outfit and to confidence,” she told me. Sarah from Energy observed: “Men were only interested in wearing a logo T shirt and jeans, now they want better fitting jeans and less boot-cut jeans.”
Can you remember what you were wearing in 2002, or what you were selling lots of? Uschi was wearing and selling classic James Lakeland tailored trouser suits and Giselle also said she loved tailoring by Helen Sorrel
(probably bought from Sly!). Suits are probably not worn by many now but fashion has a funny habit of re-inventing itself! Belinda wore “exciting shoes and still is and handbags in wonderful colours and shapes and then more shoes!!” Sandra was wearing “Arrogant Cat skinny jeans,” still a favourite for her. Claire from Energy said she was already an Energy shopper, whilst still at college; and bought all her ‘hoodies’ and loose fitting jeans from Sarah! “I also think my style has not changed a great deal!”
What did you ‘love’ about clothes during that time (favourite outfits?) Sandra from ‘So’ has always been ahead in her buying and she told me that what was good about fashion was that celebrities did not influence fashion as much as today. Uschi told me “I hated the logo T shirt but Ioved the colour, which thankfully seems to be back now!” “I loved the fun, beautiful and exquisite shoes – people had more disposable income and therefore had so much fun treating themselves to a few pairs of delicious shoes!” Belinda enthused.

and influenced a lot of fantastic shapewear to become a part of our wardrobe. At Energy ‘Fast Fashion’ means that Sarah can adapt quickly to trends. “Energy customers are influenced by celebrity culture and we can quickly pick-up on a trend, buying in-season, as well as forward buying.”
What do you think the future holds for fashion in our area? All our retailers agree they have adapted to change, probably more so in straitened economic times. I think Kate sums it up best of all: “If Stamford can retain a good mix of independent shops it will continue to pull in ‘destination shoppers’ who are often more prepared to spend freely than our cash strapped locals.” I think Stamford has so many fantastic independent retailers that it will become a more and more pre-eminent shopping destination. This in turn will give it fabulous publicity and bring more visitors and new retailers and restaurateurs to the town!
What will be the next ‘big thing’ or trend which you can predict? Or style choice, which is evolving?

What have been the most significant developments in the past 10 years – fabric innovation, design, speed of manufacture, ability to translate looks from catwalk to high street? For Giselle “fabric innovation has enabled underwear and swimwear to do things it couldn’t do 10 years ago. As busts and shapes have got bigger, technology has adapted to make garments lighter, more stretchy and stronger. Fabrics are so clever now, they can be used in better engineering these garments and they last so much longer.” In terms of the skinny jean, lycra has also helped to allow slimmer shapes to be designed with far greater comfort. Sarah from Energy has noticed that innovation has had a positive impact on the way jeans fabric has improved. “A greater variety of fits are possible – we can find a pair of jeans for 9 out of 10 customers! Comfort is now key in everything.” For Belinda, footwear manufacturing has developed. “This has seen non-leather materials develop to the highest standards, bringing the retail price of shoes to an affordable level whilst maintaining the highest quality.” Kate, owner of
Black Orchid also commented that “The growth of the internet with its knock on effects has had both a positive and a negative impact on the fashion industry.”
What has influenced fashion for you / your customer the most – celebrity, culture, magazines? “I think the influence of magazines is huge and I think a retailer who does not keep up with trends does suffer these days – people’s appetite for clothes and change has become part of our culture,” Sandra explained “I love to look in Vogue and Elle for next season’s ideas; I like to try and be first off the block!” All my retailers agree that building up a relationship with customers has become so important for repeat business and building a brand. “Customer care has become paramount in this economic climate.“ ”To know your customer and give them what they are looking for!” “To keep evolving and to do this you have to love, live and breathe your business!” Belinda told me. At Georgi, “the classic dresser is not led by celebrities but loves to see the latest styles in magazines.” Giselle explained that TV shows such as Gok and Trinny and Susannah have driven
They say creativity comes out of adversity, times of hardship and recession, so perhaps Belinda can sense something on the horizon? “I want to give my customers the confidence to try new things and not be afraid! Try mixing colours, let their fun, creative side emerge and not feel guilty about looking good! I have a wide age range of customers who shop at Sly and fashion now is not so bracketed into age groups making it easy for us all to try new fashion trends!” “The waist is back and belts – cinch it all in! – Watch out.” ‘So’. “Better fabrics – like silk, cashmere. More expensive but they will have longevity,” Uschi predicts. For Giselle it’s TV influence – “hopefully it will encourage people to come in and get measured properly in the future.” “One trend that is quite clear is that we have to cater for an older, more discerning clientele as many women are refusing to give up an interest in fashion/style just because they happen to be the ‘wrong side’ of fifty or no longer a standard size 12,” Kate explained.

BEAUTY 10 A DECADE OF
th
Genevieve Potter considers the great extent to which beauty treatments have progressed over the last ten years
T
HERE have been some huge advances in beauty treatments over the last decade. Skin issues like wrinkles and hyper-pigmentation, which in 2002 were felt to be ‘facts of life’ are now seen as correctable, with science (and the skin care brands) making huge strides in introducing scientific solutions. For those who choose to take the invasive path, treatments such as Botox and fillers can be highly effective when administered skilfully and with a light hand. But over the last decade there has also been a growing movement towards ‘modern naturals’; products and treatments that deliver exceptional, visible results through the use of naturally derived ingredients. When it comes to skin care, it seems that nature has never been so powerful.

Here are some of the best, most advanced treatments and products (natural and otherwise), to give you sensational skin this year:
CAUDALÍE AT CHAMELEON
Giselle Branan started her core lingerie business in a basement location on the corner of St Mary’s a whole decade ago, but soon saw an opportunity to offer high quality skin care and fragrances. Fast forward to 2012 and Chameleon has a range of beauty brands that you’d generally have to travel to a city to source; Serges Luten, Becca, Aromatherapy Associates, Ruth Mastenbroek and Caudalíe. Giselle is passionate about natural beauty and her own glowing skin is a great advertisement for Caudalíe; which tellingly, is the best-selling beauty range in French pharmacies. The Caudalíe brand is based on the powerful antioxidant ingredients of grapes and their vines. The range looks and smells divine and many of the natural ingredients are fiercely guarded and patented because of the exceptional results they deliver. Star products are the beautifully light Fleur de Vigne foaming cleanser (£14.50), which can be combined with the gentle buffing cream to provide the ultimate cleanse and the Vino Perfect Radiance Serum, (£44), which is rapidly absorbed and acts to even out skin tone and prevent and improve the appearance of dark spots – a must as we head in to summer. f you love the idea of totally natural products, Lisa Armitage is another highly recommended skin care brand based in Barnack. Lisa has just launched her white tea and orange blossom facial wash, priced at £13.50 for 100ml. See www.lisaarmitage.com for more details.

THE NON-INVASIVE ALTERNATIVE TO BOTOX AT RENAISSANCE For those who want instant results but aren’t keen on the idea of Botox or fillers, Renaissance are introducing Advanced Skin Technolgies’ MesoBtox, which is the ‘no needles’ alternative. Advanced Skin Technologies have a long track record in high-tech beauty solutions, including diamond tip abrasion, one of the gentlest and most advanced methods of microdermabrasion. Meso-Btox uses ultra-sound to deliver active skin plumping ingredients such as hyaluronic acid, (a naturally occurring protein that exists naturally in the skin, but diminishes as we age), through the dermal layers of the skin, allowing the skin cells to absorb vital nutrients, which allows a relaxing facial that delivers instantly visible results.
The one-hour treatments cost £65, but for the month of May Fiona has a limited number of introductory special treatments for just £35 when you mention STAMFORD LIVING at the time of booking.

QUALITY FACIAL AESTHETICS AT EQUILIBRIUM
Maintaining a youthful face is not just about the management of facial lines and wrinkles, but also good skin quality and texture. Smooth skin is an indicator of youth and becomes more difficult to attain as the years go by. Victoria Cain, Aesthetic Nurse Practitioner at Equilibrium offers expertly administered solutions including dermal fillers. These are injectable products used to smooth out facial lines and wrinkles. Once injected they boost the skin’s hydration system and restore volume by supporting the skin’s structure to delay the signs of ageing. Restylane is the substance that Victoria advocates for dermal fillers because it is produced using a patented process that involves minimal chemical interference, resulting in safe, long-lasting results. As well as adding volume to the treated area, it stimulates the production of collagen and improves skin elasticity. Restylane Vital is a more recent, lighter version of Restylane that can be used for areas that can become ‘crepey’, typically sun-damaged areas like the back of the hands, neck, or décolleté. Equilibrium also offer Genuine Dermaroller Therapy with Victoria, which is becoming widely used as one of the most effective but non-surgical routes to significantly improve the appearance of acne scars, sun damage, facial and décolleté lines and even stretch marks. The procedure is advanced skin ‘needling’, using tiny medical grade needles on an individual roller, stimulating the skin to regenerate and repair itself naturally and safely, to create smoother and brighter skin. Most patients look slightly sun-burned for a short period after the treatment and it takes up to six weeks before visible signs of regeneration occur. Since the late 1980s, anti-wrinkle injections using Botox have become the world’s most popular non-surgical skin treatment and are commonly used to treat areas in the upper part of the face, softening frown lines and crow’s feet. Victoria is a trained nurse and an incredibly experienced Botox practitioner. The injections go to work by relaxing the muscles that create active frown lines on the forehead or crow’s feet around the eyes, leaving the overlying skin smooth and crease-free. The full benefits are visible after ten days and typically last for between three and five months. Botox can also be used to control excessive underarm sweating (hyper-hydrosis), by blocking the chemical signals to the nerves that stimulate the sweat glands, though the treatment only works topically so will not stop sweat production elsewhere in the body. Results last for approximately six months. Equilibrium, 7 St Paul’s Street, Stamford Tel: 01780 757579 www.equilibriumstamford.co.uk www.facebook.com/equilibriumstamford
MD FORMULATIONS’ MEDICAL GRADE SKIN CARE AT EMMA CANNINGS The Emma Cannings team are now offering the full range of MD Formulations treatments and products. The treatment is completely personalised to each client, following a free, 15-minute consultation at the salon. The basis of this high-performance treatment is the MediSpa prescription facial, (£50 for 75 minutes) followed by one of six specific peels to suit the skin-type, including a glycolic peel for instant brightening and smoothing or the Alpha Beta Rosacea for more sensitive skin (peels from £35. When you book a course of six, the seventh is free). MD Formulation products contain alpha hydroxy acid to effectively but gently exfoliate dead skin cells and increase cell turn-over resulting in cleaner, more vital looking skin. When treatments are combined with an athome regimen, the dry, dull outer layer of the skin is effectively exfoliated, fine lines and wrinkles also become much less noticeable, skin tone becomes more even and healthier, smooth-looking skin is revealed. One’s first cover is ‘always remembered’. This footbridge across the Welland is one of my favourite spots. Middlemarch took over the town for several weeks. This shot was taken from the top of the St George’s Church Tower. The doors front cover was our most famous ever. It was a competition to find out where all the doors were and for many weeks we saw people strolling round town with magazine clutched in hand peering at doors. THE CHANGING FACE OF STAMFORD PROPERTY:
A TEN YEAR PERSPECTIVE
10
Harjit Gammon reflects on some key changes in the Stamford region’s property market over the past 10 years
th
T
alking to the many estate and lettings agents in the town it is quite obvious that the star of Stamford is still high in the firmament. As many of them affirmed, the fundamentals of the region still stand: excellent communications, location, schools and beautiful countryside. As Paul Johnson of the eponymously named estate agency put it, ‘Because Stamford is such a nice place and so attractive, as well as being close to the A1 and Peterborough, where people can still commute to London from, it is a bit of a niche market. When the property market is going up it does well but it doesn’t suffer as much in the downturns as other places. It has a little microclimate of its own. The shopping centre has diversity and appeal with many independent shops, there is a proliferation of good coffee shops and shops in general, the longstanding Friday market is still holding up and the Endowed Schools are going from strength to strength’. Darren Christie, associate at Fine & Country commented, ‘the draw of Stamford is the schooling, beauty and for London buyers the commutability. And Middlemarch and other films brought it to the notice of different tourist buyers’. So what, if anything has changed locally in the past decade?
1
ANNIVE
EXETER GARDENS BEFORE & AFTER
Dramatic rise in renting/Buy-to-Let Consensus on the rise of the Buy-to-Let market was universally acknowledged to be the greatest change of the past decade locally as evidenced by the growth of letting agents in the town. Changes to the Rent Act, which redistributed rights more equitably between tenants and landlords heralded a surge in novice private landlords investing in rented property for an immediate return or as retirement income. One effect of this was to exclude many first time buyers from the property market, with a concomitant rise in renting, a shift in the way renting is perceived (now seen as a home rather than a stop gap), and a change in young people’s ambitions with respect to property ownership. According to Richard Watson of local lettings agent Watson Mitchell, home ownership is no longer seen as life’s Holy Grail. Renting is helping young people in Stamford and the region to chase job opportunities by allowing them to remain flexible. A study found that people no longer put owning a home above all other priorities and renting is becoming the norm, with two thirds of people aged between 20 and 45 believing they’ll never own their own home. Robert Goodwin, Goodwin property services, adds the trend is also due to the quality of rented accommodation being so much better than it was a generation ago. Trend to Demolition of existing building to erect new/contemporary buildings ‘With the increase in land values, explains Robert Goodwin, many people have sought out dilapidated and outdated property on prime sites and chosen to rebuild the home of their choice instead’. The Lawson’s house in Exeter Gardens, which previously featured in Stamford Living, is an excellent example of reconfiguring a space to maximise its full potential. Originally a 1960s bungalow, it was demolished to erect a state of the art architect designed contemporary property which literally caused local residents to stop and stare. Similarly The Box near Bulwick involved the demolition of a rundown old cottage to construct a striking structure which maximises the outstanding views of the surrounding countryside and satisfies the current desire for open plan living. The advent of the gated/period facsimile development Built just over a decade ago, in 2001, Danegeld Place on the site of the former auction rooms in St George’s Street brought this national phenomenon to the streets of Stamford. Offering security and a central location, this development also satisfied the desire to live in a period style property but with all the benefits of a new build.

Period town centre residential property increasingly sought after As might be expected of the ‘finest stone town in England’ and first conservation town in the country, boasting the greatest concentration of Grade II* listed buildings anywhere in the nation, demand for characterful, period Stamford town centre property within the overall heritage area (embracing all the properties within the boundaries of the old medieval walls together with those flanking High Street, St Martin’s, whether listed or not) is still very strong. The prestige factor of owning and preserving a listed building that is a part of Stamford’s heritage still outweighs the expense and hassle of maintaining these buildings for many buyers. The agents report a massive desire to live in the town centre and to restore the town’s beautiful buildings. Not only is it an enduring aspiration to live in an older characterful property but town centre living has considerable benefits with regard to convenience and accessibility to goods and services. Buyers are a broad group encompassing retirees moving in from the villages and cities as well as families seeking easy access to the regions excellent schools. The most notable example of restoration in this category must surely be Barn Hill House. For many years after it ceased to be The Clinic, it languished neglected and unloved until it
STAMFORD LIVING MAY 2012

Glebe House, King West
was restored and reverted back to a family home in the last decade. The transformation of its garden has also made a magnificent contribution to the greening effect on the vista along Scotgate. There has also been some success in the occupancy of the upper storeys of shops, much success in former shops and offices, once converted from town houses, reverting back again. As is widely acknowledged, it is very important to have people living in a town centre and caring for it, to maintain the long-term vibrancy of these environments. Fortunately for Stamford, as the past decade has demonstrated, it has a wealth of residents willing to undertake this responsibility of care in the wider long-term interests of the town. The rise of garden grabbing developments For a period in the past decade this was an increasingly prevalent feature, for example in the Empingham Road / Roman Bank areas of Stamford. Whilst recent planning directives have curbed such development, which inevitably led to the loss of green garden space and altered the footprint of many properties detrimentally, there have also been positive developments such as the eco house at Barnsdale, which has been constructed sympathetically within its protected garden surroundings.
5
‘City Living’, The Maltings, Goodwins Property Services.
6
Significant growth of townhouse developments offering ‘city living’ in a small market town The past decade has seen a substantial increase in the population of Stamford, from 17, 492 in 2002 to 21,200 in 2012 according to SKDC; an increase of approximately 21%. There is however a great pressure on land in Stamford. ‘It is a small town, with a fast growing population, hemmed in by Burghley Park to the south and the green fields of Rutland and Northamptonshire. The great pressure for more houses has had the consequence of town houses crammed onto expensive sites,’ as John Plumb, former Chairman of the Civic Society noted at the time of the town’s 40 year anniversary as a conservation town in 2007. Notable examples of these developments include Blashfields and The Maltings near the river Welland.
7
The Country House market gets picky Whilst the large country house will always be sought after for its prestige appeal, the past decade has seen buyers become increasingly particular. Factors such as the proximity to a busy road, the facade/street presence of a property, its position on the plot have all assumed greater significance in purchasers’ consideration. Village property - proliferation of building The outstanding example of development here has to be Wothorpe, which has seen and continues to spawn massive growth. Commencing with the development of the former Priory College site and the introduction of a range of new period style properties in a park setting, building has grown apace in the form of large executive-style modern homes. Commercial Property thriving New independent and national businesses have been attracted into shop premises at a time when many High Streets and town centres up and down the country have suffered from declining occupancy. A remarkable selection of restaurants and coffee houses reflect the importance of catering for not only visitors coming to the town but also local residents, ensuring Stamford continues to remain an attractive and distinct shopping and leisure destination.

CeramiCs Market
Last year, as part of National Ceramic week, potters from the Stamford area put on a Ceramic Market at Stamford Arts Centre. They enjoyed it so much that they’ve decided to do it all again and even expand a little to include a few more potters. Please come to Stamford Arts Centre’s Georgian Ballroom to see the work of over 20 potters, watch the rolling film show of ceramic themed films and catch a few demonstrations. The market will be open 11am – 5pm, Sunday 6th and Bank Holiday Monday 7th May. Entry is free and there is free parking throughout the town. There will be a tombola of bowls made by the participating potters with proceeds going to a local charity. Enquires to Katherine Winfrey at www.katherinewinfrey.co.uk

The Fitzwillam (Milton) Hunt on the move to Dingley The Peterborough-based hunt has announced that they will be holding their point-topoint for the first time at Dingley Racecourse on Saturday 19th May. The setting at Dingley is almost unrivalled in the country, with the racecourse laid-out in the plain at the foot of the car parks to provide the very best viewing. But there is much else besides top quality amateur horseracing at all of these meetings with children’s entertainment, trade stands, food and drink stalls, licensed betting including a stand of bookies and the Tote – and of course the craic that that you enjoy when you come racing at Dingley! George Bowyer from the Fitzwilliam commented “We are very excited to be bringing our Point-to-Point to Dingley on May 19th, giving our supporters the opportunity to enjoy racing at one of the country’s premiere venues. We are all confident that adding the supporters, friends and followers of a third Hunt into the already successful Dingley ‘community’ will be to the benefit of all the meetings held there.” Visit www.dingleyraces.co.uk for more information about any Dingley meetings.

PV Solar Installations 1 Year On With a successful year behind him, in which he established PV Solar Installations as the leading Solar Panel installer in the Stamford area, Phil Auciello looks to the future and explains why Solar Panels remain such a good investment for homes and businesses.
I
t’s been quite a year for the company since first appearing in Stamford Living back in February 2011, “I could never have imagined the company would develop so quickly” explained Director, Phil Auciello, “the Feed in Tariff legislation makes solar technology a compelling investment. Customers have recognised the attractive financial benefits and appreciate my ‘no hard sell’ approach and good workmanship.” Customers include many local home-owners, Queen Eleanor School and Cummins who had a huge, energy saving 207 panel system installed. “I am very proud of my 100% positive customer feedback record” said Phil. With the cost of the technology reducing all the time solar has become an affordable and viable investment for many more property owners than ever. The current rate of FITs pays 21p per kilowatt hour of solar energy produced delivering returns of around 8-10% on capital investment. “It’s an environmentally friendly investment but of course it really helps to protect you from the further steep rises coming from the big utility companies,” Phil explained. Unfortunately the rate for the Feed in Tariff
is due to be cut on July 1st to below 17p, therefore if you are considering investing in solar then now is the time to speak to Phil and his team. Phil is introducing a new Solar iBoost product which uses the free energy to directly heat water and later this year he will also become a local provider for the Government’s new Green Deal. • To find out how PV Solar Installations can benefit your property, contact Phil Auciello on 01780 762 937, email info@pvsi.co.uk or visit www.pvsi.co.uk
Phil Auciello completes commissioning of the 50kW system at Cummins Generator Technologies in Stamford.
This residential solar pv system typically saves around £250 per year on top of the Government Feed in Tariff payments.

TURNING TEN IN 2012 Alysia Anderson gets the low-down on local life from children who, like Stamford Living, reach double digits this year William Larter has grown up in Stamford and went to the St George’s Square Nursery, now the Ark (see our article on Page 53). He says, “I enjoy playing rugby on Sundays at Stamford Rugby Club, especially as my Dad is a coach there. It also means I have lots of Stamford friends, even though I go to school at Witham Hall now. I like taking my terrier Toby into Burghley for a walk as it’s just round the corner from our house. I enjoy making Lego robots at the Arts Centre and I like Martins the newsagents because Jean always saves me my Beano magazine and I love going down on a Saturday to pick it up. I love the Fair and especially the Magic Mouse dodgems and anything with water that gets my grandfather wet! What I like about my age: “Being able to earn more pocket money by doing jobs like clearing leaves in the garden. I don’t like having to wait years to get a driving licence and to be able to go to the pub!”

place. I like being outside and going exploring. The best thing about being ten: “Being double digits. This gives me a sense of responsibility and also my mum might give me an i-pod touch now! The worst thing about being my age is that soon I will be leaving Stamford Junior School.” Fellow SJS pupil Barnaby Shand is a keen sportsman. “I like playing rugby and hockey at school and also enjoy my lessons at Stamford Tennis Club. For food I like the Cosy Club, Pizza Express and Cook! The good thing about my age: “I’m allowed to stay up later and go to the park by myself with a friend. I also get to run errands for my mum. The bad thing is getting more, and harder, homework!”

Tom Crick, who attends Malcolm Sargent, is a keen connoisseur of Stamford’s eateries. “My favourite places are Ask for the pasta and desserts or OK Diner because I like the American-style food and atmosphere, especially the Elvis posters. I also like Beans for their fantastic bacon sandwiches and milkshakes. I like Burghley House for its nature and also hanging around in the High Street as there is always something going on! On my tenth birthday I did my swimming lesson and drama at the Arts Centre then went to WH Smiths to use some of my book tokens. Later I went to Stamford School to watch my brother Ben in Les Misérables. What’s good about being ten? I like being in double figures.”
Tom
“It’s great living in Stamford because we can walk everywhere and I love the old buildings,” says Arabella Watson, a pupil at Malcolm Sargent school. “I like visiting Burghley House and especially love the panelled rooms. In summer we take a picnic to the Garden of Surprises. I also enjoy walking on the Meadows with our dog Hugo; we chat to lots of people, and the Fair is the highlight of the year! My favourite place for supper is Cloisters, and for hot chocolate and ice cream, Café Black. My favourite shop is Mousetrap for cuddly toys. What’s good about my age: “On Saturdays I’m allowed to help in my mum’s clothes shop.” Sophie Piggott agrees that the Meadows are great for walking dogs. “It’s beautiful by the river and our dog loves to go for a swim there. I love doing drama workshops at the Arts Centre and I like the library because reading is one of my favourite hobbies. I also like Pizza Express because they do really nice pizzas. Living here is great because it’s a really beautiful

Holly Holly Firkins sees the positive side of being in Year Four: “The good thing about being my age is you get to do more at school. I love St Gilbert’s and my friends. The teachers are really nice.” Holly makes the most of Stamford’s artistic scene. “I like going to the Arts Centre, eating there and watching films and shows with my family. I enjoy dancing modern and tap at the Welland and going to Music Explorers, where I like playing new instruments, doing quizzes and singing. I also like the ladies in the hairdressers Beyond the Fringe, where you get a lollipop!”

Children in Stamford are being invited to participate in a Jubilee Art Competition. Six local primary schools are also taking part in the event run by the local committee of The Children’s Society, which will culminate in an exhibition in the town centre over the Jubilee weekend. The competition is open to all children aged 5 to 11 in Stamford and its environs and is free to enter. The theme Being British is taken from the art event of the same name, taking place on June 29th at The Stamford Arts’ Centre Ballroom to raise funds for The Children’s Society. The ticketed evening event will showcase contemporary and conceptual works from 10 artists, including portraits of Ricky Gervais as Charlie Chaplin by renowned photographer Jay Brooks. Tickets are £10, on sale now from The Arts Centre Box Office. The children’s competition theme has no restriction as to what Being British includes. The selection committee is particularly interested in how the British culture and identity is explored and what makes us different to other nations and special. Rob Dulieu is a Stamfordbased Boot Camp Instructor, Personal Trainer, Guinness World Record Holder of an exercise called ‘The Plank’; and now an Online Fat Loss Guru. In the summer of 2010 he launched Stamford Boot Camp which gave him the opportunity to explore his creativity by employing fresh and unique exercise programs. ‘I wanted my group sessions to be distinctive: this was my chance to bring fun to fitness so I filled my programs with variety and humour to lift my client’s spirits, boost their self esteem, and improve their overall health’. Judging by the testimonials on his website it seems to be working. On the back of this success Rob has now opened Stamford Personal Fitness Studio in the former Language Centre on St Peter’s Hill and plans to recruit staff to help him expand his range of services. ‘I always wanted to have my own staff and nurture them to thrive through encouragement. Launching my new Studio will allow me to fulfil another lifelong ambition as I plan to build an excellent team around me. Based on the phenomenal success of his Boot Camps, Rob will soon be launching more fitness classes especially for mums and dads after school drop off so make sure to get your name down quickly. Not one to rest on his laurels, Rob has also just launched a revolutionary new 28 day Accelerated Fat Loss Program which helps clients shed a lot of fat quickly and safely, and avoid the dreaded ‘rebound’ by following a world class nutritional plan whilst being mentored online with weekly educational webinars. ‘Last year I met a world-renowned fitness instructor who has helped me to learn more about fat loss in 6 months than I have a in a lifetime. My Accelerated Fat Loss clients have not only achieved dramatic fat loss but they have also changed their lifestyles to facilitate lasting weight management – boy does it work!’ The program features a detox pack, nutritional booklet, 4 online educational webinars, and private online group support. The research behind this program was conducted by some of the world’s leading nutritionists, some of whom advise Olympic athletes, but what they have uncovered works for the masses too. Design Solutions
Garden Notes With summer approaching, it’s time to think about your outdoor space. Charlotte Newby gathers some practical ideas to prepare for the season ahead Starting from scratch If your garden is in need of a complete overhaul and you don’t consider yourself a Charlie Dimmock or Alan Tichmarsh, you may wish to find someone else to do the groundwork. Stamford-based Marram Ltd is a garden design and construction company who pride themselves on being able to deliver the whole package. Whether you have some ideas of your own, or if you need advice and suggestions, Marram can design your garden layout, source the raw materials, bring in the skilled manpower required and create a garden you want, with minimum disruption. They also take on individual projects like paving and drives, water features, terraces, tree surgery, planting and maintenance. Ken Rawson Garden Designs, based in Easton-on-the-Hill, is also able to help with garden dilemmas, whether you want a complete design and build, or just advice on planting, weeding, layout, special features or even gardening lessons. Ken has been in the garden design business for more than 25 years and offers a very comprehensive service for gardens of any size. Visit their websites for details; in both cases, there is a gallery of completed projects so you can see for yourself the type of work they regularly undertake. A lawn to lie on You may have neglected your lawn over winter, so if you are hoping to sit on it, lie on it, roll on it or simply admire it from the kitchen window this summer, now is the time to take action. Bring in an expert who can deal with all those tricky issues like fertilisation, scarification, aeration and treating moss and weeds. You can arrange year-round treatment with the Countrywide Lawn Doctor who’s based in Stamford. First of all, Andy will visit you to assess your lawn’s condition, take samples of turf, measure it and work out the steps required to treat it. He’ll then put together a report and quotation and a planned care programme. This normally means four to seven visits over a year and the promise of a lush and deep green lawn that’s healthy all year round.

Turn your waste into delicious, nutritious food for your plants
Save the rain before it runs away Mulch your borders With an early hosepipe ban in place, it’s worth thinking about how best to prevent your beds and borders from drying out. Using a bed of garden mulch can help with this and at the same time prevent weeds from growing where they’re not welcome. Mulching can also provide nutrients for your plants. The best time to mulch entire beds or borders is in late-winter or early spring – and now would be fine - when you can trap in moisture. Spread a two-inch layer around plants or across the soil with a spade or your hands and leave a little gap around the plant stems. Then level it off. You can use well-rotted manure from garden centres, bark which also looks good, cocoa shells, gravel and grit, and grass clippings (while not very attractive, this is useful around the back of the border). For next year, make your own mulch by collecting autumn leaves and storing them in sealed bin bags. Create compost A compost heap offers so many benefits to your garden. Not only a good way of disposing of kitchen and garden waste to provide nutrient-rich food for your plants, it’s also a source of food and shelter for many creatures, from insects and invertebrates to hedgehogs and slow worms. If space is limited, you can opt for a compact plastic compost bin from a DIY store. If you prefer a homemade approach, then
a compost bay can be simply constructed out of four pallets bolted together, or spare chicken wire and some posts. Ideally the sides should be insulated with something like cardboard or straw, and it needs a cover – cardboard or polythene work well. Around 40 per cent of the average dustbin contents are suitable for composting – basically anything that was once living, with the exception of meat, dairy and cooked food. You can include paper products too. There’s a useful gardening website with plenty of information on composting at www. gardenorganic.org.uk Collect rainwater It’s easy to collect rain. All you need is a rain diverter and a water butt, propped up on blocks or on a stand so you can get a watering can underneath. Water is already in desperately short supply this year, so if you want to save your garden it would be well worth dashing out now to get a water butt. David at Harrison and Dunn says they had already sold their usual seasonal supply of them before the end of March and have now ordered dozens of extra ones to keep up with demand. If you have plenty of space, then the Sankey 210-litre water butt is the one to get. It’s £31.99, plus £11.99 for a stand. The space saving 100-litre one is £22.99; add a stand and diverting kit for a further £10.00.

Simple to grow and truly delicious
Hanging tomatoes If you like the idea of growing something organic and delicious, nothing can beat the taste of home-grown tomatoes straight off the plant. But if you haven’t got a greenhouse, or if ground space is an issue, consider growing them in a hanging basket. If you can suspend them somewhere near your kitchen door, they will not only be decorative with juicy clusters of colourful fruit trailing and cascading over the sides, but they will also be conveniently placed for watering as well as picking. Varieties considered suitable for baskets, in terms of appearance, aroma and texture are ‘Hundreds and Thousands’, ‘Tumbler’, ‘Maskotka’, ‘Garden Pearl’, ‘Tumbling Tom Yellow and Red’ amongst others. Plant up young tomato plants in May or June for picking during mid to late summer. The Telegraph website (www.telegraph.co.uk) has some helpful advice on tomatoes in its Lifestyle/Gardening section.

FAMILY MATTERS Rachel Barnes Photography Book for a spring sitting and save £91
When was the last time you updated your photographs? We all know that time flies and family members grow up fast. This time of year is a fantastic time to update your photographs as the warmer weather brings the flowers into bloom and some lovely outdoor portraits can be taken. Rachel is an experienced Master Photographers Association award-winning photographer, specialising in portraits of families and children. Rachel believes the secret to a successful portrait shoot is to make sure everyone enjoys themselves. Her refreshing and relaxed style allows her to capture beautiful, natural, flattering images - see for yourself by visiting www. rachelbarnes.co.uk . Many people like to have a photographic record of their loved ones on a special occasion, such as a big birthday or anniversary when the extended family gets together, and some families enjoy marking watershed moments, such as children leaving home for university, as it may be their last chance to photograph them in the final stages of childhood. Rachel has a fully equipped studio for inside sittings and an attractive walled garden for outside portraits; some people prefer to have their sitting at their own homes and Rachel is quite happy to arrange this. Stamford Living readers can benefit from a special offer of a portrait sitting, in Rachel’s studio or garden, and a mounted 9”x 6” image for just £39, saving £91 off her normal prices. This limited offer is only available until May 30th 2012 call 01832 720154 or email enquiries@rachelbarnes.co.uk for an appointment.
Dickinson & Co
Can you make a positive impact on a child’s life?
Robin Dickinson, solicitor, has recently secured membership of the Law Society’s Conveyancing Quality Scheme – the mark of excellence for the home buying process. Buying a home is one of the largest purchases anyone will make in their lifetime, so it is essential that it is done to the highest standards by a solicitor. There are many different conveyancing service providers out there making it difficult for home buyers to identify those who can ensure a safe and efficient level of service. Membership is recognition of the high standards that the firm provides to its residential property clients and is a signal to future home buyers of the excellent service level provided at what is often a stressful time for many people. The overall beneficiary will be clients who use a professional service when buying a home. They will receive a reliable efficient service as recognised by the CQS standard. There are over 300 children in care in Peterborough but not enough foster families to help care for them whilst they are unable to live at home. Peterborough City Council needs 40 new foster carers and is issuing an urgent call to action to the people of Peterborough to come forward and help make a positive impact to these children’s lives. People from all walks of life are needed - you can be single or married, young or old, male or female, gay or straight, have no children or a house full, be in perfect health or have a disability. The only thing you need is a spare room, an interest in helping local children and their families and a clean criminal record. Becoming a foster carer is a fantastic career opportunity as you will become a childcare professional, which means you’ll receive free training and ongoing support, a fee and a weekly allowance per child that you foster. But most of all it can be enormously rewarding and a lot of fun. As one foster carer said: “The biggest kick I
Do you have the qualities to help care for someone else’s child and to give them a loving and supportive home? get from fostering is seeing the young person come on in leaps and bounds; just seeing him smile is enough to make anyone’s day. Like with anything there are good days and bad days, but the good days so far outweigh the bad that it’s a massively rewarding thing to do. The level of personal, financial and practical support we get means that I wouldn’t swap it for the world.” For more details about fostering, please contact them or visit one of the recruitment stands. “ST MARTINS IS AS MUCH A THERAPY CENTRE AS AN ANTIQUES CENTRE.” Jane Vaughan has recently moved house in Stamford so it’s no surprise to find her measuring up potential kitchen tables in St. Martins Antique Centre. Next year is St. Martins Antiques 20th Anniversary and it’s thanks to regular customers like Jane that the Centre has a history of success. Down the years, since we first opened, Jane has been popping in regularly. She’s not a collector of anything specific. “I just like old things around me. I’ve bought everything from an iron bed to small occasional tables, vintage dresses and countless nick-knacks. I never could resist a bargain and often find that items here are cheaper than Ebay.” All this time Jane has worked in the NHS at both Stamford Hospital and Peterborough. After a stressful week she likes nothing better than to visit the Centre. “As soon as I walk through the door I start to relax. I love the nostalgic music. Peter Light has even lent me CDs in the past. Now that’s customer service! In fact this is as much a therapy centre as an antiques centre.” We’d like to thank Jane and all our regular customers for making the years simply fly by and if you read this and decide to visit us for the first time, then here’s to the next 20 years. FOOD & DRINK
FROM FIELD TO PLATE
TEN YEARS ON Sarah Lyon shares her experiences of writing for the magazine over the last decade
T
hrough the use of personal interviews, I began in 2003 to use my writing as an analytical lens with which to explore and provide insight into the provenance of food and the deeper issues concerning the drive to provide sustainable, traceable food. This conviction and a real love of food has been shared and in time developed into friendships and a working relationship with those I have written about.
New Lodge Farm was the first of many such feature articles. Simon and Sarah Singlehurst sell their lamb, beef and pork on the Farmers’ Markets, and direct from the farm; meat that is guaranteed antibiotic and hormone free. A POINT OF VIEW, Local producers - Sarah Sean Hope and Simon Singlehurst “We started the idea of selling to the public 11 years ago, because we truly believe in the concept of eating high quality, locally produced seasonal food, which has low food miles. So many of our customers rely on us to bring the meat to their towns and markets, and although some of the markets have had problems in a similar way to the High Streets that they are situated in, the markets are still a social hub of the town where we are always genuinely pleased to catch up with our customers every month and share news just like friends. At the Farm Shop (nine miles SW down the A43, just short of Bulwick) there is delicious food to eat and buy, our monthly bulletin is fun, and educational too, and of course connects the customers with the farming experience that links what we do to the food on their plates. Shelves in the shop are packed full of other local produce too.” I have worked alongside New Lodge Farm hog, beef and lamb roasts; catering canapés, salads and puddings. As a caterer the provenance of the food provided is all important and it has been a privilege to recommend the Singlehursts roasts to my clients. • New Lodge Farm, Bulwick, Northamptonshire NN17 3DU, Tel: 01780 450493, www. newlodgefarm.com. Sean Hope is owner and chef of The Olive Branch since 1999, when he and Ben Jones bought the property with the aim of revitalising a village pub. In 2005 Sean Hope wrote “The Olive Branch, Full English and other pub recipes.” Sean invited me to be involved in the project and as the booklet featured a few chosen local producers I went out to their farms, with a professional photographer, Richard Faulks, to do my research. It was a fantastic experience. A POINT OF VIEW, Local chef – Having maintained a Michelin Star for the 10th year running, Sean Hope at The Olive Branch “Since 1999 our focus has been on revitalising the hub of the pub within the community offering a menu and dishes created around locally sourced ingredients prepared with the minimum of fuss. We are blessed with a close proximity to wonderful growing soil, rare breeds and other fabulous produce.” • The Olive Branch and Beech House, Main Street, Clipsham, Rutland LE15 7SH, Tel: 01780 410355, www. rutlandinncompany. co.uk, www. theolivebranchpub.com In 2004 I became leader of Slow Food Rutland & Lincolnshire food convivium (group). Fourth generation farmer, Andrew Dennis was one of our first supporters and members and hosted one of our first events at Woodlands Farm in Kirton near Boston in Lincolnshire. When I
Sarah Lyon accompanied Andrew to London in November 2009 to accept the BBC Food & Farming Award for Farmer of the Year, Sheila Dillon asked him what it was he wanted people to leave the farm with. Andrew’s reply was, “A sense of wonder for the growing capacity of the miracle of the land”. Sheila Dillon described Woodlands Farm as “mixed farming on a grand scale with a social purpose,” and this is what the farm provides, with its demonstrations for school children, guided walks as well as the farming of the land. A POINT OF VIEW, Organic and Biodynamic Farmer – Andrew Dennis of Woodlands Farm “Since the inception of Farmers’ Markets in the late 1990s there has been an increased awareness of the provenance of food and the way in which it’s produced. With the work that Hugh Fernley Whittingstall has done on animal welfare there’s also been a marked increase in the public’s understanding of animal husbandry, in my view not before time. Such developments are very welcome and they kind of chime with what we are trying to do here at Woodlands: to provide our animals and poultry with dignity all along the way.” • Join up to Woodlands Vegetable & Fruit box Scheme. THE OLIVE BRANCH GREAT BRITISH TASTING MENU
Nicholas Rudd-Jones was invited to the ‘trial’ night of the Olive Branch’s newly introduced 6-course tasting menu
S
ean Hope and his team invited a lucky group of Olive Branch aficionados along to try out their new tasting menu, inspired by the wish to experiment with new flavours and textures and push further the boundaries of the kitchen’s cooking skills. We met in the Barn, a delightful private room alongside the main restaurant area that can seat up to 20, ideal for parties, celebrations and meetings, and chatted over a rhubarb cocktail (with a choice of non-alcoholic or alcoholic) before the meal. What followed was a gastronomic sensation. We kicked off with Olive Branch crab cake, with mango and mint salsa and a vanilla bisque, that worked exceptionally well with the shellfish; then cold pressed salt beef with bone marrow and a ‘deconstructed’ Waldorf salad, which as well as being delicious added great visual interest to the plate; then hot smoked salmon, with carpaccio of beetroot and horseradish, using three types of beetroot – the familiar deep red, a golden and a crisped one. Then we moved on to the course many voted their favourite – a chicken & leek pie with Chantenay carrot purée and roast shallot. As Sean modestly said when he introduced this dish, great quality ingredients are the key to the end result, and the chicken was stand out for its flavour, in a delicious sauce with a hint of sherry and tarragon. Wherever possible, Sean
40
has sourced his ingredients locally, and the chicken is from Fosse Meadows near Lutterworth. And then we moved on to savoury, with an ingenious cheese and ham toastie accompanied by a prune purée (a personal favourite); and then to finish everyone’s favourite, a truly yummy dessert – passion fruit & raspberry Eton Mess with White Chocolate Mousse. That was quickly demolished, and by the end of the meal I felt replete but not over-full and I had experienced a taste and texture sensation in every course. The tasting menu is terrific value at £45, or £65 if you have the accompanying drinks, which naturally we did. The wine for each course is designed to complement the dish, and we found much to like in the selection, especially the Devil’s Corner 2008 Riesling from the Tamar Valley in Tasmania which accompanied the salmon course. Two of the courses are accompanied by beers, my favourite being the Innis & Gunn Original, brewed in whisky kegs in Scotland, which we had with the savoury course – rich and delicious. The tasting menu is now available throughout the week in the Barn for between 10 and 20 people, and we heartily recommend it. In the coming weeks many of the dishes will also be available on the pub menu. • The Olive Branch Pub, Main Street, Clipsham, LE15 7SH tel: 01780 410355 www.theolivebranchpub.com

MOTORING
The impact of the Budget on motoring The cost of driving is rising and it is not going to get any cheaper as a result of a number of Budget 2012 measures. Ashley Martin takes a look over the details
W
hether you drive your own car or a company car you will experience a rise in motoring costs in 2012/13 thanks to Chancellor of the Exchequer George Osborne. The Chancellor ignored the requests of motoring groups and industry to delay, or even axe, the scheduled August 1, 2012 3.02p per litre rise in fuel duty. With pump prices already at record levels 140.02p per litre for unleaded petrol and 146.7p per litre for diesel - the duty rise will add further pressure to stretched household and business budgets That is before taking into account the socalled ‘perfect storm’ of adverse factors that have helped drive up wholesale prices of both petrol and diesel to the extent that they are hitting new highs almost daily. Those adverse factors include: • The stand-off between the Western powers and Iran over their nuclear programme tightening global supply with the European Union agreeing to an embargo on oil supplies from Iran starting this summer. • The Pound remaining weak against the US Dollar, the global petro-currency. • Financial problems at some of Europe’s ageing refineries may affect local UK supply. • The continuing strong crude oil demand in Asia and other emerging economies. Meanwhile, on April 1 most standard and first year rates of Vehicle Excise Duty increased in line with inflation. However, in a bid to encourage further demand for low emission vehicles, standard VED rates for cars with up to 120 g/km CO2 were frozen. Additionally, first year rates for cars emitting up to 130 g/km remain at £0. Elsewhere, across the 13-band system (A-M), there were increases in standard and first year ranging from £5 for most categories to £30 in the first year rate for vehicles emitting more
than 255 g/km (band M). Additionally, increases in company car tax rates for 2012/13 and 2013/14 were already known, but the Chancellor announced further rises for 2014/15, 2015/16 and 2016/17. There will be a further tightening of company car tax thresholds by one percentage point for cars emitting more than 75 g/km of CO2, to a maximum of 35% in 2014/15, and by two percentage points, to a maximum of 37% in both 2015/16 and 2016/17. From April 2015, the current five-year exemption for zero carbon and ultra low carbon emission vehicles will end. The appropriate percentage for zero emission electric cars and low carbon vehicles will be 13% from April 2015 and will increase by two percentage points to 15% in 2016/17. The surprise decision not to offer any benefit-in-kind tax incentive from April 2015 to company car drivers to choose an electric car could render demand for the breakthrough technology redundant before it has truly taken off unless manufacturers bring list prices into line with those for petrol and diesel models. From April 2016, the Government will remove the 3% diesel supplement differential so that diesel cars will be subject to the same level of tax as other cars. HM Revenue & Customs has calculated that the increase in newly announced company car tax rates will on average result in an employee driving a petrol-engined car paying an additional £70 in 2014/15, £165 in 2015/16 and
£165 in 2016/17. Meanwhile, an employee driving a diesel company car will see average increases of £85 in 2014/15 and £190 in 2015/16, followed by a reduction of £85 in 2016/17 when the existing 3% supplement is removed. The RAC has calculated the soaring annual cost of owning and running a car privately up 14% (£819) to £6,689 per annum (£5,231 excluding average fuel use) last year. Drivers can do little directly about the high cost of fuel, although surveys highlight that many motorists can cut back on distances travelled. The RAC’s top tips for saving fuel include: • Drive smoothly and plan ahead anticipating the road ahead avoiding sharp braking and accelerating • Stick to the speed limits • Don’t rev - the more you rev the more it will cost in fuel. • Check tyre pressures regularly • Shop around for fuel But company car drivers can keep increases in benefit-in-kind tax bills in check by choosing low emission vehicles. Many motor manufacturers specially badge the lowest emission most fuel efficient models in their ranges. For example, Volvo’s ‘DRIVe’ nomenclature cars across its model range includes vehicles such as the C30 1.6, S40 1.6 and V50 (emissions of 99 g/km), the S60 1.6 (114 g/km) and the V60, V70, S80 1.6 (119 g/km).

LEARNING
NURSERIES AND CHILDMINDERS Alysia Anderson looks at the childcare options available locally for those key early years
I
n our first issue ten years ago we ran an article on new businesses in Stamford, including the St George’s Square Nursery, set up by Jo O’Bryan Tear. Since then the nursery, like the children in Jo’s care, has had a growth spurt, which you can read more about on our profile on page 53. And the overall pre-school provision in the town has also developed substantially over that period All the nurseries below offer Early Years Funding for 3-5 year-olds, which is 15 hours a week of government-funded care for 38 weeks annually. Some offer the ‘stretched’ option of 12.5 hours weekly over a longer period to help working parents. For full Ofsted reports, visit www.ofsted.gov.uk
ABC Nursery Barholm Road, Tallington PE9 4RJ Tel: 01778 343111; www.abc-daynursery.com Open: 8am-6pm, Mon-Fri, 51 weeks a year, for 0-4 year olds Cost: Under-2s £4.20 per hour; over-2s £4 per hour One of the area’s longest-standing nurseries, ABC gains satisfactory Ofsted reports and offers flexible care. The nursery is set in a purpose-built building in several acres of land, with three age-related play areas. The Ark Nursery Foundry Road, Stamford PE9 2PP Tel: 01780 482113; www.thearkstamford.co.uk Open: 8am-6pm, Mon-Fri, 51 weeks a year, for 0-4 year olds Cost: under-2s £45.50 per day; 2-3s £44.50; over-3s £45.50. Half-days available plus discounts for full-time attendance and siblings. Ofsted rated the Ark outstanding with its setting in a bright, specially-designed log cabin. A highlight is the inventive, freshly cooked food, sometimes using vegetables grown at the nursery. The outdoor play area is enhanced by use of the adjoining field at St Gilbert’s Primary School. The Ark at St George’s St George’s School, Kesteven Road PE9 1SX Tel: 07527 806136; www. thearkstamford.co.uk Open: 9.15am-3.15pm in term time for 2 1/2 - 4 year olds Cost: £12 per 3-hour session The Ark took over the nursery last September and has introduced the same high standards of care and a similarly colourful and well-equipped interior. Located in a cabin beside St George’s Primary School, children enjoy access to the school’s playing fields as well as their own enclosed garden. Bluecoat School Nursery Unit Green Lane, Stamford PE9 1HE Tel: 01780 764202; www.bluecoatprimaryschool.com Open: 8.30-11.30am and 12.15-3.15pm in term time for 3-5 year olds Cost: Fully funded with no extra sessions available Housed in a bright, spacious room at the heart

Stamford Childminding Group Ofsted-registered childminders are professionals who work in their homes, providing high quality childcare that meets the guidelines provided by Ofsted and the Early Years Foundation Stage. Typical charges are £3.50 to £4.50 an hour. Childminders offer structured learning, a mix of adult-led and child-initiated activities and the flexibility that comes from home-based settings. Through open communication with families, childminders endeavour to create a stimulating environment in which each child can learn and grow. Benefits include: Consistent care: the child is cared for by the same childminder each day, often over a number of years Flexibility: a childminder can offer early mornings and late evenings, some providing overnight and weekend care. Childminders can take children to playgroups and sessions at the local Sure Start Children’s centre. They can also drop off and pick up from schools providing after school care. Inclusive: childminders care for children of different ages and abilities together in the same group. Adaptable: childminders can offer spontaneity. An unexpected sunny or snowy day is a great opportunity for outdoor learning and play. If a child is tired or under the weather they can rest in a homely environment. How to find a childminder: Stamford Childminding Group is a pro-active group of 18 registered childminders. CELEBRATING 10 YEARS OF RUNNING CHILDREN’S NURSERIES We look back at the story behind one of Stamford Living’s very first editorials: a small nursery that took root ten years ago in a Stamford garden and has now grown into two thriving children’s nurseries

s Jo O’Bryan-Tear looked out over her sunny walled garden in the centre of Stamford she had an idea. As a nursery nurse Jo had a very clear vision of what she would like in a nursery and was looking for one for her own three year-old son Teddy. “We had this beautiful walled garden right in the middle of Stamford and two sunny garden rooms – probably the ‘downstairs’ of a once very smart ‘upstairs downstairs’ house,” says Jo, “and it was obvious: I was staring at – or rather living above – my ideal nursery.” The rooms were converted, the garden given over to outdoor play, and St George’s Square Nursery opened its doors in October 2002 with just ten children. It outgrew its first home and now, ten years on, the original has turned into something very different: a purpose-built, Scandinavian designed full day care nursery for 52 children called The Ark on the site of St Gilbert’s School in Stamford. It has already been awarded ‘Outstanding’ status. Meanwhile, another, smaller pre-school nursery, The Ark at St George’s, opened in September of last year in the grounds of St George’s Primary School in Stamford and has already been praised by OFSTED for its “home from home learning environment” and the “warm relationships between children and staff”. And the principles and the ethos of the original remain very much at the heart of both nurseries for Jo and her business partner Claire Kenyon. “We see outdoor play as a key contributor
in the physical and emotional development of all young children and ultimately would love to be able to offer a ‘Forest School’ experience in the area.” Jo and the nursery manager Helen Watson have recently completed Outdoor Learning courses in Scotland and Lincolnshire. Ironically, Jo could once again be staring this new opportunity in the face. “My family and I moved to Ketton about two years ago and are lucky enough to own a small piece of land, which I think would make an ideal setting for just such an offering. There’s a small wood and a paddock and even a little stream. There’s plenty of room for small farm animals, chickens, a kitchen garden and fishing for tiddlers. But more importantly, there’s room for children to roam and learn.” The sort of life, in fact, that Jo herself remembers fondly from her own childhood growing up on a farm in Lincolnshire. “We plan to start taking children on trips from our two nurseries very soon. “It is funny to think I would be ‘living above the shop’ again,” says Jo, “but it’s a wonderful chance to share what we have with others. My children are now in their teens so it will be lovely to see the delight on children’s faces as they explore the countryside.”
