The ‘three generation’ test I have recently discovered a new way of finding out whether something meets with universal approval – does it meet the three generation test? In other words, do my mother, I and my children all have the same view on something. In my experience, full ‘three generational approval’ is relatively unusual, but for what’s it’s worth here are some of the ones we agree on: • Boris Johnson cheers one up and is therefore a good thing, regardless of his background or politics • The Olympics and Paralympics were an uplifting triumph • You always find what you are looking for in Harrison & Dunn • Stamford is the perfect town to live in, because it has something for everyone (and not forgetting Rutland Water) I hope that everything is going well with your autumnal plans; the next thing you know you glance up and it’s half-term.

here are so many diverse looks around for Autumn / Winter and I hate to say ‘Anything goes!’ but clearly as long you layer up and choose good Autumnal colours you can’t go far wrong. So, with my six key style directions, pick and choose from Animal prints, Aztec, coloured jeans, chunky knits and wraps, The Shirt and Russian style.
6 key style directions Animal and reptile prints are still on trend with large scale representations and prints onto sheer fabrics. Aztec is the main design / motif for sweaters as seen in Energy - chalky colours, think native and bold. Coloured and coated skinny jeans are still the style of choice, tucked into short boots or worn with socks showing. It’s all about the knit this season, so if you buy one item, think Aran, Fair Isle, cowl necks – just make it big! Shirts are everywhere, buttoned up and preppy, loose and flowy, with studded collars, without collars. Russian style follows hot on the heels of Kiera Knightley – in Anna Karenina. We will all fall in love with her look for sure!

UPDATES Head for the Norfolk coast to exercise mind and body!
If the changing seasons make you feel like a change of scene with a difference, then look no further. Whether you want to exercise the body or the mind, Briarfields Hotel in the beautiful coastal village of Titchwell, North Norfolk has got it covered this autumn with two exciting events planned. First up, on Saturday 20th October at 2.30pm, is the inaugural ‘Bookfest’, supported by Waterstones of King’s Lynn. Local crime writer Jim Kelly will address the audience, including discussing his recent novels, Death’s Door, set just along the coast, and Nightrise, followed by signing copies of his books and Briarfields’ Posh Afternoon Tea. Hot on the heels of Bookfest comes Briarfields’ second ‘Iyengar Yoga’ Weekend Retreat with Hannah Lovegrove. Running from 9th to 11th November, guests will also be able to enjoy optional treatments including a range of massages, a cookery demonstration and a walk along the beautiful coastline. “I think people really do enjoy the combination of going away for a short break, knowing they have the benefit of practising yoga but also they are able to really relax here with good food, good wine and good company. The North Norfolk coastline is seen in so many films, but to be able to visit here is superb,” says Hannah Lovegrove. Jim Kelly agrees. “ The coast plays a pivotal role in my Shaw and Valentine books and one of the Dryden novels. My hero, Peter Shaw, lives on the beach just north of Old Hunstanton where his wife runs a café. In Death’s Door, the original crime takes place on a mythical island near Wells-next-theSea.” Tickets for Bookfest are £15 per person including a £3 voucher towards the cost of any of Jim’s books. The Yoga Retreat is £250 per person, all inclusive, based on two sharing a double room with single participant and non-participating partner. Non-resident rates available on request. • Contact Briarfields for more information: 01485 210742; info@briarfieldshotelnorfolk.co.uk; www.briarfieldshotelnorfolk.co.uk
Queensgate’s got Sundays all wrapped up Queensgate is the perfect spot for shopping on a Sunday
Packed full of the latest fashion from high-street favourites such as Fat Face, Superdry, Republic and H&M, there is plenty to keep budding fashionistas happy. In flagship store John Lewis, visitors can find stylish homeware and gorgeous garden accessories, alongside designer fashion for both men and women. After a browse around the shops, visitors can stop for a sweet treat or delicious sandwich at one of Queensgate’s cafés and restaurants, including the newly revamped Costa Coffee, Muffin Break, Reflections Coffee Shop and the John Lewis Place to Eat café; and shortly Carluccio’s. Shoppers can park at Queensgate all day on a Sunday for just £1, so there really is no reason not to come and enjoy a full day out in Peterborough city centre. • For further information go to www.queensgate.co.uk.
Autumn food and crafts
If you love good food and crafts, visit the Living Heritage Craft and Food Fair at Burghley House on the weekend of October 13th and 14th. There will be 90 of the country’s most talented crafts people exhibiting, working and selling their wares in the pavilions, including Roy Clarke, with his potter’s wheel and David Spencer, who makes leather moccasins. Ed and Margaret Burke from E&M Glass in Cheshire will be demonstrating the fascinating art of glass blowing. Visitors are encouraged to try crafts for themselves in various areas. Expect to see lots of artisan cheeses and meet their makers, as well as all kinds of delicious foods. • The Burghley Craft and Food Fair is open from 10am-6pm. ew legislation has recently been passed which aims to put an end to “Botox parties” and effectively means that all patients visiting a clinic or salon for the first time for a Botox treatment must have an initial consultation with a doctor or nurse prescriber. As the skill and experience of the practitioner is fundamentally what impacts the end result, this can only be a positive move in increasing understanding of the procedure, vigilance and safety for the consumer. If you feel that nature could use a helping hand, Genevieve Potter takes a look at some of the options available in the field of aesthetic beauty, including an exciting new clinic in Tinwell.

Throw away your eyebrow pencil for good! Permanent make-up solutions are now offered at Stamford’s ToeTally clinic. Eyebrows are the most popular treatment offered by skilled practitioner Carolyn Claypole and the results come close to natural perfection. This is extremely beneficial for people who have medical conditions such as alopecia and other conditions which cause the thinning or loss of hair, as well as those who have simply over-plucked their brows over a long period of time. This type of permanent make-up can also be used on other areas of the body and is even utilised to recreate the areola following breast surgery. Fiona Hood at Renaissance launched Advanced Skin Technologies’ Meso-Botox this spring and it’s already proving popular with those who aren’t quite ready to commit to more invasive treatments. The four-stage treatment starts with thermotherapy which prepares the skin for treatment, opening the pores and increasing circulation. This is followed by diamond tip microdermabrasion, increasing cell turnover and the skin’s ability to absorb the special serums. The next stage is mesotherapy, where clinical-grade serums are infused into the dermal layers of the skin using ultrasound. This enables a more natural way of the skin absorbing the product effectively. Different areas of the face can be treated at the same time, enabling relaxation of expression lines instead of freezing the muscle, giving a very natural look. It also helps to lift, firm and plump expression lines, as well as reduction of pigmentation (it even helps protect the skin from harmful UV rays). The final stage is cryotherapy which closes the pores and stabilises the treatment. Each treatment is tailor-made for the client’s skin type and lasts an hour. A course of ten (one per week) costs £595 with monthly maintenance recommended (£65 per single treatment). Renaissance, 2 Mallory Lane, Stamford, PE9 2FW Tel: 01780 763768 www.renaissancebeauty.co.uk

Why use an
Interior
Designer? Sara Norman-Smith, one of the four design partners at Hunters Interiors, guides you through the benefits of calling in an interior designer
H
ave you ever chosen a fabric for some curtains that you have never been happy with – they just don’t do what you had in mind? If you have, you’ll appreciate that it’s more difficult than you first thought as well as being a costly mistake. Creating a room where everything ‘just seems to work’ doesn’t happen by chance for most people; only the lucky few have the ability to make it come about with seemingly little effort. Several have a go, whilst others call on an Interior Designer. If you want your home to reflect you and your style of living, so that it not only functions how you need it to – but looks wonderful too, an Interior Designer will help create just that. You may have ideas yourself but just not feel brave enough to put it all together. Relax and enjoy the experience, with the worry of achieving the look you are after off your shoulders. Even the small details that a designer comes up with will really make a difference. You don’t have to be rich and famous to consult an Interior Designer – good design and happy living are available to everyone. The cost of employing an Interior Designer is less than you might imagine. For example a colour mood board for a specific room, including fabric samples, paint colours, wallpapers, lighting and furniture choices, designed and put together specifically for you, starts from as little as £150. Another alternative is a two hour consultation at your home giving you advice and ideas. Perhaps you simply need help with placing the furniture and lighting in your room or a few rooms. It’s amazing what a pair of trained ‘fresh eyes’ can do! Why call an Interior Designer in? A designer will have access to an infinite choice of fabrics, wallpapers, paints and everything else you need to complete your home. The secret however is letting them choose an appropriate selection for you. This saves your valuable time and energy. For achieving your desired look, with the budget you have, a designer will save you money by choosing the best value items to suit your budget. If you are working or have a busy family life, employing a designer who can provide you with tried and tested craftsmen and oversee the
1
work to be undertaken removes the burden of arranging this and liaising with many different trades. You solely deal with your designer. Designers hold a wealth of information, ideas and experience which they will be happy to share with you to make your home work for you, both for relaxing in and also one that functions on a day to day basis. Ideally you would like what you do to increase the value of your home whilst enjoying living in it. A designer will be able to offer advice on spending in areas that will increase its appeal if you are planning on selling too. If you need to be persuaded that Interior Designers are a friendly bunch then take some time out to visit Hunters Interiors Showroom just outside Uffington on the way to Tallington. You will find the converted farm dairy full of inspiration, fresh coffee and a friendly welcome. • Hunters Interiors, The Dairy, Deeping Road, Uffington, PE9 4TD www.huntersinteriorsofstamford.co.uk

Walking in BB’s footsteps
Denys Watkins-Pitchford, one of Britain’s greatest naturalists and children’s writers, was local to this area, living in a village close to Fermyn Woods. Dave Phillips reports
E
ntering the sleepy village of Sudborough from the A6116, the first house you see is a distinctive former toll house, known as the Round House. It was once the home of one of Britain’s greatest children’s authors, who wrote under the pen-name ‘BB’. His best-known book was The Little Grey Men, published in 1942, which won him the prestigious Carnegie Medal for children’s literature in the same year. It was about the last gnomes in England and was among 20 children’s books he wrote and illustrated, although he signed his illustrations with his real name, Denys Watkins-Pitchford. His other children’s books included Brendon Chase (1944), about two young brothers who run away from home to live in the woods – a cracking adventure story that has delighted generations of youngsters, myself included. That alone would be enough of a legacy for most writers, yet ‘BB’’s list of achievements goes way beyond writing books for children. He was also a talented artist, inspirational fisherman, one of the country’s best-loved wildfowlers and a spearhead of the butterfly conservation movement. And, better still, he was a local man – and you can visit many of the places that inspired his writings. Denys Watkins-Pitchford was born in 1905 at Lamport, near Northampton, the son of the local rector. As a boy he loved to wander the fields and brooks, and it was during his early years that he insists he once came across real gnomes by a local stream. They would later be his inspiration for The Little Grey Men. As ‘BB’ grew older, he began to draw and write about what he saw. He eventually studied at the Royal College of Art and in 1930 became an art master at Rugby School. His first book, Wild Lone, the story of a fox, was published in 1938. At the same time, he penned a weekly column in the Shooting Times, which he was to continue writing for half a century (his pen name ‘BB’ came from a size of lead shot). Also a keen angler, in 1950 he wrote Confessions of a Carp Fisher, which was the catalyst for a new movement in the world of angling. Before his book, nobody fished for carp because they were considered “uncatchable”; today the carp is Britain’s most popular fish. ‘BB’ married his wife Angela in 1939 and the couple had two children. Angela died in 1974, but ‘BB’ carried on living at the Round
22
House, which was just a short walk from Fermyn Woods. Dismayed at the decline in butterflies due to the use of pesticides, ‘BB’ made it his personal mission to reintroduce the magnificent Purple Emperor butterfly to Fermyn, by collecting the eggs and hatching them at home in special breeding cages. His efforts were so successful that Fermyn Woods became the Purple Emperor’s greatest stronghold in the UK and every June butterfly fans from all over the country flock there to see these remarkable insects. The local countryside was always his inspiration. In 1967 he wrote A Summer on the Nene about a boat trip on his local river and
his 1961 book The Badgers of Bearshanks was based upon the real wood of the same name, near Lyveden New Bield. Close to his cottage runs a tributary of the Nene, Harper’s Brook, about which he wrote: “Standing on the old stone bridge the other day and looking over at the brown stream where the minnow shoals were spawning, I began to think about this little stream, how it has run down the centuries way back into the mists of time. Trees die, as does all life, but this bright water runs eternally, truly as old as the hills.” ‘BB’ was awarded the MBE for his services to children’s literature in 1990. He died the same year, aged 85, but his legacy lives on, including 59 books illustrated with his distinctive scraperboard images… and those Purple Emperor butterflies, of course.
From ‘BB’’s former home the Round House at Sudborough (OS map reference SP 971821) there is a public footpath that crosses the A6116 to Fermyn Woods. The best time to spot Purple Emperor butterflies is late June and the best places are at SP 966855 and SP975840. Bearshank Wood (SP 998858) is best approached from Pilton, or by foot from Lyveden New Bield (SP983854). To stand where ‘BB’ stood to watch Harper’s Brook flow under the stone bridge, go to Sudborough (SP 965820).

Alysia Anderson canvasses opinions from local mums on fun, hassle-free parties for both kids and parents Mission possible
Let’s face it, who wouldn’t want to be a spy for the day? At Si5 Spymissions in Cambridge (08444 515515; www.spymissions.co.uk) children ride a zip-wire into the building to begin their mission. “Although it’s quite far to go, Andrew and his friends thought the party was amazing,” said Marion, mother of two boys. Girls like it too, as 11-year old Evie from Stamford attested. A two-hour party for kids aged eight and above starts at around £10 per child, with hot meal and drink an extra £4. Hourlong sessions can be arranged for six-to eight-year-olds at £8 per head. Party packages, including food and party bags, are also available. The Matthews brothers from Bainton rate Delta Force Paintball (0844 477 5050; www.paintballgames.co.uk) as their number one suggestion for a party, says their mum Beth. “It’s the real thing and only for the tough and energetic!” The closest place is Corby although the minimum age there is 12. Kegworth, near Nottingham, allows ten-year-olds. It’s a full day out, with ‘missions’ including storming a castle or locating treasure in the Amazon. Prices start at £14.99 per child and include protective gear, ammo, target practice and a dozen games in themed woodland zones such as Fort, Jungle or Zombie’s Crypt. Meals are available for around £2.50 per head. Alternatively, Paintball Nation (0844 745 5005; www.paintballnation.co.uk) has a centre in Kettering and offers half days from £7.50 per child or full days, including lunch, from £9.99, plus £6 for 100 paintballs. Kids can also have fun zapping their friends with Phaser guns at Laserforce in Peterborough (01733 894549; www.laserforceuk.co.uk). Prices start from £9.20 per child including games, drink and ice cream.
In the saddle
If your youngsters liked the Burghley Horse Trials, they might enjoy an equestrian outing. Uffington Riding Stables (01780 754044) and Somerby Equestrian Centre (01664 454838, www. somerbyequestriancentre.co.uk) both offer riding parties for children. At Somerby, it costs £20.50 per child for a group of four to eight children aged four and above, including rosettes and pony club games. Party food can be brought to the centre if wished. Eight-year-old Issie thoroughly enjoyed her party at the Uffington stables, where she and her friends got to groom and put glitter stencils on the ponies as well as riding them. Her mum said: “It was brilliant and the children had plenty of time with the ponies, who were all really patient.” An hour’s party costs £15 per child, with a minimum of seven and maximum of 12 children.
Ready, steady, cook!
Stamford Cookery School (01780 752172; www.stamfordcookeryschool.co.uk) holds parties for children aged five and upwards in its dedicated kitchen. Under Thierry Daugeron’s expert tuition they’ll create delicious dishes to take home, such as chicken roulade and raspberry chocolate pud. The cost is £190 for up to nine children, then £20 per extra child, including ingredients, chef’s hat and apron. If that’s beyond your budget, why not have a cookery party at home? Cupcakes or biscuits are easy to make and fun to decorate. Harrison & Dunn or Lambs in Stamford sell cheerful culinary ware such as novelty cookie cutters and kids’ chef hats.

is the venue. Local company Activ8 (07843 109792) offers multi-sport parties which can be held at a venue of your choice or at Copthill School in Uffington at weekends. The price of £5 per child (minimum spend £100) includes 90 minutes of sports such as relay races, croquet, Frisbee, lacrosse and dodgeball. Tables and chairs are available if you want to bring a party lunch or tea. Organiser Deb Brice says: “We can also theme the activities to the birthday child’s choice, for example Harry Potter or Ben 10, and we can take children as young as three.” Over at Rutland Water, the RockBlok (01780 460060; www.rockblok.com) offers climbing parties for kids aged five and above. They’ll enjoy games and instruction on the traverse wall and, if aged over eight, can also tackle the high ropes and abseiling. A party package costs £99.99 for six children then £12 per additional child. A room is available for catering use and party bags, including mini carabiner, friendship bracelet and knot card, are offered at £2 each.
A touch of glamour
Indoor excitement
If the weather’s looking dodgy or, like me, you have kids with winter birthdays, there are plenty of indoor activities available in a party format. Bowling in Peterborough is fun for both boys and girls and costs from £7.95 per child, including party food (0844 826 3027; www.amfbowling.co.uk). Swim parties are always popular and are available at Stamford, Bourne or Market Deeping Leisure Pools (www. harpersfitness.co.uk). Prices vary between centres but in Stamford start at £55 for an hour’s swim for 20 children, with hire of a poolside table for your own party tea an extra £11. Exclusive use of the pool for up to 60 children is £131. Adults are required to be in the pool with children under eight years old. The Market Deeping centre also offers rollerskating parties at £67 for up to 45 children including invitations, party bags, instruction and skate hire. My daughter thoroughly enjoyed the party she went to, even though she was an inexperienced skater, so why not give it a whirl?
A sporting chance
Keep the Olympic spirit alive with an active party. Premier Sport (01953 499040; www. premiersport.org) offers multi-sport, tag rugby, football, high-energy dance and even cheerleading in a party format. Join the free membership club and the price is £119 instead of £140 for 20 children. This includes a trained coach for 90 minutes, equipment, invitations, drawstring goody bags and a trophy for the birthday child. One pleased parent was Bec, who had a tag rugby party for her son Sam. She said: “The party was excellent. It was all handled for me and very stress-free. The children loved it, even those who were not crazy about rugby.” All parents need to provide
Sarah Taylor of Stamford Beauty (01780 757108; www.stamfordbeauty.com) offers pamper parties for groups of up to eight, aged eight and above, at her salon in Silver Lane. “The party lasts two hours and we do a mini-cleanse, tone and moisturise plus a file and polish with gems on their nails”. The price of £22.50 per child includes party food, decorations and sweetie bags. Mini makeovers and glitter tattoos from £1 per child are just some of the extras offered at Popstar Parties (07739 360370; www.dance-days.co.uk). Run by qualified dance teacher Lisa Tee, parties cost £75 for up to 15 children at home, plus £30 if held at the Stamford or Spalding dance studios. Children learn a dance routine to a pop song of the birthday girl’s (or boy’s!) choice, which they perform to parents at the end, and also enjoy games during the two-hour party.
Go for a spin
Boys, and no doubt Dads as well, will love the parties at Scalextric Racing in Spalding (01775 752415; www.scalextric-racing.co.uk) where featured tracks include Silverstone and Brands Hatch. A two-hour party costs £10.95 per child including food, with a maximum of 16 during weekend slots. Or get them behind the wheel of the Krazy Karts at Tallington Lakes (01778 347000; www.tallingtonlakes.com). Kids can enjoy a mini Grand Prix for £30 per child (minimum height four feet) with heats taking place over two to three hours. Also available here are tobogganing parties on the dry ski slopes. Party games and an hour’s tobogganing on the nursery slope with an instructor costs £6.75 per child, for a minimum of eight kids. Older children can enjoy the thrills and spills of the main ski slope for £8 a head. STAMFORD LIVING october 2012

UPDATES Spotlight on the Caribbean
A
s the days shorten and the dark evenings begin, it’s time to think about Winter Sunshine. One of the best destinations in the winter months are the fabulous Caribbean Islands offering guaranteed sunshine and only an eight hour flight from the UK. One million square miles of indescribably idyllic islands, powder white beaches, crystal clear seas, perpetual sunshine and friendly faces, make the Caribbean perfect for a break during the winter months. The Caribbean island nations continue to be considered among the world’s most perfect destinations, ripe with palm fringed beaches and some of the best diving reefs in the world, lush rainforests and dramatic volcanic landscapes. Rich with adventurous tales, mixed cultures and astonishing natural diversity, the island’s history is still felt today, not least in the cuisine, a heady mix of French, Spanish, Dutch and British influences, and a glorious colonial architecture which seems to highlight the simple charm of traditional Caribbean pastel coloured homes. Antigua is one of the sunniest islands in the Eastern Caribbean, literally blessed with hundreds of sandy beaches; it’s also the region’s top yachting destination. A highly recommended hotel is Blue Waters in Soldiers Bay, a particular favourite of Oundle Travel, with many repeat guests returning every year. Of all the Caribbean islands Barbados is the one that remained British throughout its colonial history, it still displays an endearing set of British quirks and traditions from afternoon tea to horse racing and of course the cricket! Coral Reef is family owned and remains a firm favourite for 5* Deluxe accommodation. Forming part of the northern constellation of the Caribbean Islands the British Virgin Islands offer some of the world’s most exclusive hideaways and playgrounds with superb hotels and villas. • Oundle Travel have considerable personal experience of all the Caribbean islands and have stayed in many of the islands’ hotels. For honest, unbiased personal recommendations, prices and availability please contact them on 01832 273600. www.oundletravel.co.uk
Orangehouse Selected For National Award Energy prices seem to be continually rising and many people are looking at other energy sources to reduce their costs and carbon emissions. Local company Orangehouse Renewables has been working hard helping homes and businesses achieve these aims. This effort was recognised by finishing in the Top 5 nationally for the prestigious national Renewable Energy Awards. The Stamfordbased company specialise in supplying heat pump systems. Heat pumps collect energy from the air or ground to provide efficient heating and hot water for new or existing buildings. Orangehouse gained the important Government-backed Microgeneration Certification Scheme (MCS) standard earlier this year. This means systems comply with safety and installation standards; will perform efficiently for years to come and gives the

Stamford Hidden Article Competition
Primary school children from the Stamford and Rutland area will have the chance to win £100 during the October half term, by seeking out hidden articles in some of Stamford’s best shop windows. From Saturday 20th October until Saturday 3rd November, many of the town’s retailers will be displaying an object that they don’t usually sell – it might be a dice in a shoe shop, or an Oxo cube in a clothes shop. Children simply have to spot the out of place objects, and the top three eagle eyed youngsters will win cash prizes of £100, £50 and £25. The competition is being organised by Hannah Warner, who used to take part in Hidden Article competitions in her Shropshire hometown as a child. She says “As a mum of four I am always looking for ways to entertain the children during the school holidays. Thanks to Stamford’s brilliant and supportive retailers, I am hoping that The Hidden Article Competition will be a really fun activity for all primary school children in the area to take part in, with the chance to win a large amount of money!” Competition entry forms cost £2 and will be available from the Tourist Information Centre in Stamford Arts Centre, and children’s clothes shop Bubble and Squeak, from Saturday 13th October. All profits will go to the St Gilbert’s School Jubilee Sanctuary Garden project.

Cane able PE R SPE CT IVES
and
Split-cane rod builder Richard Holman is keeping a traditional craft alive – and building exquisite fishing rods, says Dave Phillips
T
here was a time when all good fishing rods were made from bamboo. Not just any old bamboo, mind – I’m not talking about the improvised garden cane fishing poles deployed by small boys – but split-cane rods created by skilled craftsmen from the very finest materials. Only one type of bamboo – the giant Tonkin cane from the Kwantung region of China – could be used. And that would then be carefully aged for at least a decade before being painstakingly split into triangular sections. These in turn would then be planed with microscopic precision before being glued together to form a rod with a hexagonal cross section. When created by a skilled rod builder, the end result would be a fishing rod of extraordinary power and lightness. But such workmanship didn’t come cheap and, with the advent of new materials like fibreglass in the 1960s, the split cane rod quietly faded from the scene. It seemed that another traditional skill would be lost forever. But not quite. A handful of split-cane aficionados believed that no synthetic, man-made alternative could replace the unique action of a fishing rod made from natural fibres – and they kept the old technology alive. Among them was school teacher Richard Holman, a keen angler who, when away from the classroom, loved to wander the banks of small trout streams tempting his spotted quarry with well-aimed artificial flies, cast with his favourite lightweight split-cane rod. But his life changed forever 25 years ago when he moved from Dorset to Uppingham – and found himself living in the same street as Marcus Warwick, one of the UK’s leading split-cane rod builders. “It was always my ambition to make my own rod from scratch,” says Richard. “I got to know Mr Warwick and he was very open about the way he did things. He was generous with his knowledge and became my mentor. From deciding to do it to building my first rod took me two years. It then became a hobby and I started building rods for friends.” The hobby became a business a year ago when he retired from teaching at Tresham College, Kettering. He calls his business John French, Rodmaker. “John French was my father’s name,” explains Richard. “He taught me woodwork when I was a boy. He passed away a few years ago so I thought it would be nice to build the rods in his name.” These days, John French rods are sold all over Europe – but not in great

numbers. Because every one is hand-built by Richard himself, he only produces about ten a year. There’s a waiting list for them, but they are well worth waiting for. They are exquisite. Customers can choose form a range of five rods, ranging from a two-piece 6ft 3in rod suitable for casting light lines (AFTM 4) in small brooks through to an 8ft (AFTM 5) for heavier lines on larger streams. All are designed for intimate river fishing – Richard explains that the longer, more powerful rods required for still water trout fishing on lakes like Rutland Water would be too heavy if made from split-cane. He recommends modern carbon fibre rods for such Herculean tasks. Modern rods and the composite materials used in their construction change at an alarming rate. Today’s rods made from carbon fibre become obsolete tomorrow as new developments arrive, but split-cane rods remain timeless. “A cane rod is for life,” says Richard. “It is an investment for the rest of your fishing career. You only ever buy one and it’s for a lifetime’s companionship. People often buy them for a
loved one for their 40th or 60th birthday, or as a retirement present. But there’s no reason why you shouldn’t indulge yourself, of course!” When you do buy a rod from Richard, it is a bespoke creation. He likes to meet the prospective owner, ascertain what sort of fishing he enjoys and how he would like the rod finished, including the types of fittings used and even the colour of the gossamer silk thread used to whip on the rod rings. Richard also likes to see the size of the owner’s hand, so he can create the most comfortable grip (made from the finest Portugese cork). Each rod is supplied with two identical tip sections, so that the owner can alternate them and even out the wear. Like all natural materials, bamboo subtly changes over the years and will even adapt to the owner’s casting style, according to Richard. To protect them from knocks, they come with a cloth partitioned bag and a tough aluminium tube. Richard’s rods are not cheap, at £750 each. But that is a bargain for a hand-crafted fishing rod, built to last a lifetime. Although they look flimsy, these rods are capable performers. Richard is a mustard-keen angler and his biggest-ever trout – a mighty 4lb 2oz specimen from the upper reaches of the River Welland – was tamed using one of his own rods. • Contact Richard at 68A High Street, Uppingham LE15 9PZ. illoughby House and The Grey House, two prominent buildings in Broad St in Stamford opposite Barclays Bank, have for the last six years or so been converted into very flexible office accommodation. The Grey House has 12 offices ranging from 150-550 sq ft and Willoughby has 16 offices ranging from 160-500 sq ft, some of which have linking doors and can be offered as suites. FLEXIBLE AND WELL SERVICED SPACE The appeal of renting in either of these two houses is the flexibility they offer for growth. As a first step out of working from home, or beginning to expand with a full office infrastructure, there is an office or set of offices that can meet your needs. And getting started is simplicity itself. The rental cost covers office furniture, electricity and cleaning; all you need provide for is telephony. There is a ‘fibre optic’ broadband available to both buildings. There are also parking spaces available. GREAT LOCATION The location is one of the great appeals of the buildings, right in the heart of Stamford, a big plus when hiring people or receiving clients. COMPREHENSIVE SUPPORT SERVICES A company called Miss Moneypenny PA Services is located on site. Penny Toulson, who runs it, can offer all forms of secretarial services, executive personal assistance or even lifestyle management. So if you suddenly need some extra help or if you are away, she’s there to help you. PART OF A BROADER BUSINESS COMMUNITY Finally there’s the intangible benefit of being one amongst several expanding, vibrant businesses. Across the two properties you will find, amongst others, recruitment, marketing, events, travel, accountants, haulage and finance companies. During the day there are many chances for a friendly chat with a business neighbour, and numerous bits of business get initiated. FEEDBACK FROM TENANTS Bruce Dodworth, owner of Sea Glass PR, which specialises in reputation

management for major global companies, has been based at Willoughby House for nearly a year. Bruce uses it as a base (most Sea Glass clients are located in London). Bruce told SL: “I like the business ‘incubator’ element of the property with many small businesses located in the same place - all looking to grow and all with similar challenges. The building is very well maintained, it’s centrally located (with parking) and there’s fabulous natural light. It’s a great place to work” Wendy Shand Bruce Dodworth, Sea Glass PR Ltd Tel: 01780 769069 www.seaglasspr.com Fay Brooks, the owner of Stamford Bookkeeping (Tel: 01780 756387) www.stamfordbookkeeping.co.uk), which specialises in bookkeeping and accounting for local businesses and sole traders, likes a number of things about the place: “The beautiful character of the building and professional environment created by all the tenants provides a good place to conduct business. The building is well maintained and tastefully decorated which gives a great impression to visiting clients. The central location and parking facilities also makes it easily accessible to staff and customers.” Wendy Shand, owner of Tots to travel (www.totstotravel.co.uk), which specialises in offering family friendly holiday villas across Europe, likes a number of things about the place: “The whole Tots team love being in Stamford and the building is a lovely place to work; it is light and airy with its big period windows and high ceilings and we particularly enjoy the views over Broad Street. The other benefit is that the space is so flexible so that as we grow our team we can continue to stay in the building.” • To enquire about renting offices in either house, contact Penny Toulson. Community Orchard Day Stamford Arts Centre - 6th October Stamford hosts one of the country’s largest Apple Day events, attracting over a thousand visitors on the day. This year is set to be bigger and better than ever! As always, the East of England Apples and Orchards Project will be bringing along many different varieties of English apple. And their experts will be on-hand to identify the apples that people bring along on the day - hoping to find some of the long-lost Stamford apple varieties. Cog’s own gurus will be dispensing invaluable advice to people on how to sort out problems and look after the apple trees in their gardens. As well as the apple identification there will be a tombola and lots of stalls selling apple related gifts and produce, including food from New College Stamford; Watch group, Bourne Wildlife group, Lyveden New Bield and Country Markets; Beekeeping and Honey; cider from Jollydale Cyder and many more. There will also be fun and games such as pin the maggot on the apple and apple bobbing, for children big & small. • For more details contact info@scog-web.org.uk or visit www.scog-web.org.uk STAMFORD LIVING OCTOBER 2012

Car Maintenance Ashley Martin investigates what is happening to car maintenance during these difficult economic times
H
ousehold budgets remain under pressure and anecdotal evidence suggests that car maintenance expenditure is being deferred to cut costs. However, such a strategy is likely to be short-sighted in terms of future maintenance costs, and both the value of the vehicle at sale time and, perhaps even more importantly, road safety. The annual RAC Cost of Motoring Index reveals that vehicle maintenance costs increased by an average 8.8% last year to £472 per vehicle (2010: £434). Data from the organisation highlights that it costs an average £367 a year to maintain a small car, rising to £499 for large family cars. The expectation is that that just as night follows day maintenance costs will continue to rise, particularly with owners keeping their cars longer and the introduction of a tougher MoT in January this year. Figures from Britain’s largest vehicle auction company, BCA, which has a centre in Peterborough, highlight that the age and mileage of the average car going under the hammer has now reached 64 months/60,100 miles compared with 62.5 months/59,200 miles 12 months ago. MoTs are mandatory when a car reaches three years old in Great Britain and European legislation means that more elements of a vehicle are now subjected to testing. Elements added to the MoT from this year are: airbags, brake fluid warning light, catalytic converter, condition of all visible wiring, condition of battery, electronic seat adjustment motor, electronic parking brake, electronic stability control, high intensity discharge (HID) lamps, power steering, seatbelt pre-tensioners, trailer/caravan electrical socket and tyre
pressure monitoring system. A survey by consumer magazine Auto Express suggested that the repair bill for an electronic stability control system could top £2,000, while repairing an electric seat adjustment motor could cost more than £1,500 and replacing a tyre pressure monitoring system more than £500. Industry organisations suggest that among deferred items of car maintenance are tyre replacement, routine servicing, body work repair and maintenance of ancillary functions such as air conditioning. However, ensuring vehicles are serviced in accordance with manufacturer recommendations is essential. Late servicing can trigger higher maintenance bills and can also invalidate warranty cover. Meanwhile, new research from oil company Mobil suggest that 75% of drivers don’t know how to check car oil levels; almost half of the drivers questioned were oblivious as to why oil was used in their vehicle’s engine and 94% of motorists were unaware that using the correct oil could significantly prolong the life of their engine, as well as potentially improve fuel economy. Ignorance means that costs can quickly mount with a failure to keep oil levels at manufacturer recommended levels potentially leading to a blown engine and a very expensive bill, while a failure to replace worn out tyres can be lethal. The current fine for driving on illegal tyres - 1.6mm of tread across the central threequarters of the breadth of the tyre and around the entire circumference - is £2,500 per tyre and three points per tyre on a driving licence. However, tyre performance is compromised as tread levels reduce and, with tyres the only part
of a car in contact with the road surface their failure can cause a crash. Meanwhile, research from Kwik-Fit highlights the dangers of driving with under-inflated tyres. Its latest nationwide survey shows that over two thirds (69%) of cars in the UK are being driven on tyres that are at least 3psi under the manufacturer’s recommendation. Under-inflated tyres produce poor handling and braking and can lead to tread damage, blowouts and potentially carnage on the roads. Additionally, a failure to maintain correct tyre pressure levels compromises fuel economy at a time when pump prices are at record levels. Under-inflation can raise fuel consumption by 10%. Finally, selling a car in good condition with a full service history will not only attract a higher price, but will almost certainly be of more interest to a prospective buyer than a car with a gap in its history and in poor condition. Skipping routine servicing, as well as cutting into a car’s resale value, has a massive impact on the general condition and reliability of a car over the long term. Without regular oil changes, oil filter changes and routine checks of the safety features, wear and tear can turn a previously reliable car into a nightmare. Indeed research commissioned by Kwik Fit shows that a full service history on a car could increase its value by 26%. With the average used car selling for £5,500, the findings indicate that a fully stamped service book could be worth up to £1,500. All of which means that at a time when British car owners are feeling the pinch like never before, they could be driving blindly towards expensive vehicle bills in the future if they fail to look after their cars in line with manufacturers’ recommendations. Barnsdale…
Live it…love it…own it…
Nicholas Rudd-Jones was amazed to discover just how flexible and good value Barnsdale Hall’s timeshare scheme is
I
have always loved Barnsdale Hall for its stunning location and grand panoramas across Rutland Water. Just arriving on site takes your breath away, as the driveway gives way to a rolling lawn going down to the water, with spectacular views as far as the eye can see. And this always puts me in a relaxed yet active frame of mind; and Barnsdale never disappoints, with its fabulous array of leisure activities and catering. But today I am meeting Russell Waters, General Manager, to learn more about the timeshare. “We have 49 units,” Russell tells me, “and occupancy is over 90%, which we are really pleased with. Over the last few years, as we have invested more and household budgets have become more stretched, so local families have really come to appreciate the flexibility and value of our timeshares.” A Barnsdale timeshare amounts to an incredible four-in-one package The start point for a timeshare is to choose a property on the site – there is a choice of properties by type and size, sleeping from 2 to 8 people, all set in the beautiful grounds with views over the water. Prices begin from £1,200 for a specific week, lasting 16 years. INCLUDED IN YOUR SEASONAL OWNERSHIP YOU HAVE THE FOLLOWING: Use of all the resort facilities during your holiday

THE FACILITIES AND SURROUNDINGS: At Barnsdale • Fully Air-Conditioned Gymnasium, with Personal Trainers • 22 Metre Pool • Sauna and Steam Room • 2 Spa Pools • 6 Tennis Courts • Crazy Golf • 9 Hole Pitch’n Putt • 2 Squash Courts • Fitness Studio • Football Pitch • Artificial Bowls Lawn • Snooker Table • Boules Court • The Spa Experience In the area: • Sailing • Falconry • Birdwatching • Fly Fishing • Golf • Cycle Hire • Gardens • Museums • Stately Homes • Art Galleries •

Your lodge kept in top condition: a) Preparation of the lodge for your arrival b) The lodge is cleaned and closed upon your departure c) There is an annual maintenance fee, which covers all maintenance needs for your property The ability to exchange your timeshare week/s for properties overseas (and Barnsdale is a Gold Crown Resort, so very desirable to others). So if one year you fancy a trip to Spain or the USA or anywhere else. Or you can rent out your own property for cash if you prefer.
4
There are also excellent catering facilities, with a choice of the Brasserie Restaurant or the Lounge-Bar. • You can be a part of this fabulous lifestyle too. Just contact us, details below. The timeshare represents excellent value in its own right but, with the benefits of all year round concessionary membership of the leisure facilities and the flexibility on timeshare locations abroad, it is truly unbeatable.
Concessionary use of the Leisure facilities all year round
FEEDBACK FROM A TIMESHARE OWNER: “Owning a timeshare at Barnsdale has been one of the most cost-effective decisions we have made as a family. We bought our week over 10 years ago and have subsequently enjoyed access to all of the leisure facilities. I use the gym and the children love the pool, the mini golf and my husband is now teaching my 6 year old to play tennis as well. All this for a one off payment of £1, 000 and an annual maintenance fee, which is less expensive than a family gym membership. Our week is for February half term and we have invited friends to join us in Rutland in the comfort of a lake side facility, but more frequently we exchange with www. dialanexchange.com, where there is no membership fee and offers an excellent service ask for Wendy if thinking of joining! This summer we spent 2 weeks in the Costa Del Sol banking our weeks and then swapping our timeshare.”

A Deeper Green – Woodlands Farm Biodynamic Borlotti Beans Biodynamic farming is the most natural way of raising livestock and crops writes Sarah Lyon
B
iodynamic farming strives to heal the Earth by prohibiting the use of chemicals, hormones or antibiotics. I make an annual visit to my sister’s farm on Vancouver Island, Canada to experience this unique method of farming and have recently visited Woodlands Farm (Boston, Lincolnshire) where Andrew Dennis has been busy harvesting the farms first crop of Biodynamic Borlotti Beans. Biodynamic farming started in 1924, in what is now Poland, when a group of discerning farmers began to notice the negative effects of farming from the use of chemical fertilisation – crops were not yielding the sort of harvest that pre-industrial farmers had become used to. So Rudolf Steiner came up with a solution to this question and set out his answers in a series of lectures promoting a purer, more holistic method of farming. “The extra-special quality of care implicit in the biodynamic approach is a quality I’ve often felt when visiting biodynamic farms across Europe,” says Andrew Dennis. “In April 2009 we set up a 300 acre biodynamic farming pilot project here at Woodlands, our idea being to try to deepen and build upon the organic farming approach being practiced on the farm. We have since harvested our certified biodynamic crops (vegetable and cereals) with turkeys, pork and eggs too.” Biodynamic produce carries the Demeter symbol and meets Full Organic Standards. “I guess Biodynamic is the ‘deepest green’ of all the eco-farming approaches, so from Woodlands’ point of view we continue to move forward in terms of commitment to qualitative values and on another level it is
42
fascinating and fun,” says Andrew. “The sweet flavour and creamy texture of the pink and white Borlotti Bean is of Italian origin and is the perfect ingredient for salads and home cooked casseroles.” • Join up to the Woodlands Farm Vegetable & Fruit Box Scheme, pre-order: organic Lincoln Red Beef, Organic Lincoln Longwool Lamb, Organic Rare Breed Turkeys, Lincolnshire Buff eggs. FRESH BORLOTTI BEANS WITH THYME (serves 4) HEALTHY EATING CAN BE THE KEY TO TRANSFORMING YOUR LIFE: it will give you the energy to think more clearly, to lead a more focused life and thereby to achieve your dreams, writes Jane Clarke. Jane has created this recipe and many others in her book Bodyfoods, to help bridge the gap between eating the foods that you love, purely because they taste good, and those that will help you gain and maintain health and vitality. • 1kg/2lb 3oz fresh Borlotti beans, podded • 1 bunch fresh thyme • 6 ripe medium-sized vine tomatoes • 115ml/fl oz extra-virgin olive oil • 2 small garlic clove, whole Preheat the oven to 200C/400f/Gas mark 6. Place the beans in a terracotta casserole dish large enough for the beans to take up half of it depth. Add the tomatoes, garlic and thyme. Pour in cold water (or cold chicken or vegetable stock) until there is about 5mm/1/4in water between the top of the beans and the water level. Drizzle over the extra-virgin olive oil. Place a piece of kitchen foil over the dish, tucking in the edges to seal. Make a small hole in the middle of the foil to allow the steam to escape as the beans cook. Place in the oven and cook for approximately 1 hour, during which time the liquid will be absorbed by the beans, which will
soak up the flavours of the olive oil, tomatoes and thyme. Remove from the oven and gently stir the beans, which should now look delicious and creamy. Season with lots of freshly ground black pepper and a little sea salt and drizzle a dash of extra-virgin olive oil over the top. This recipe comes from Jane Clarke. She is a very successful food writer and skilled Cordon Bleu cook and has written the bestseller series of books, Bodyfoods and most recently Nourish (Collins & Brown, £25). Jane was the Nutritional Consultant working alongside Jamie Oliver on his TV series ‘Jamie’s School Dinners’. She runs her own private practice in London and also has a practice at the Spires Hospital in Leicester. She lives in Rutland with her daughter Maya. They have an acre of garden where they love growing their own vegetables and harvesting apples and plums from the fruit trees in the orchard.

The Fine Food Store steps up another gear The Fine Food Store’s lunch menu has recently expanded and it has now truly entered the league of ‘gastro cafés’
“T
he Fine Food Store has moved Velvet pork belly, forward so much over the past puy lentils year, but we have never really and chard put the message out there,” owner, Jenny Fitzpatrick, commented. ”I am so proud of Hannah our chef. She has been with us for two years now as an apprentice and has worked incredibly hard to develop the menu with me. It is great to have found someone that is so passionate about seasonal, local produce. She is extremely gifted!” Jenny invited the Local Living team to try out a number of the new dishes that will regularly be available on the specials board. In every case we found that the dish went beyond what you might reasonably expect in a competent café and was much more akin to what you would find in the new breed of ‘gastro cafés’ - the food quality of a restaurant but the informality,
flexibility and buzz of a café. The Fine F lunch time menu has expanded significantly over the past year to include many more seasonal variations. There is a daily changing specials board, which we were invited to taste. These were just some of the positive comments from our team: “This is the type of food I would eat every day if I could”; “So often the vegetarian offering is predictable, safe and bland… but not here”; “Such interesting flavour and texture combinations”; “Absolutely yummy”. • The tapas evenings are drawing to a close, as Jenny and Peter are expecting a baby in January; but the bistro is still available for private hire, and the menu can be designed around your requirements. 37 St. Mary’s Street, Stamford PE9 2DS Tel: 01780 754222

hen it comes to top-class beef, I reckon the English Longhorn is probably the best breed in Britain. It has provided some of the tastiest cuts I have ever eaten. The Longhorn breed was originally native to Leicestershire and is renowned for the quality of its meat. To get this quality takes time and effort – Longhorns don’t suit modern, intensive farming techniques, and rearing them successfully requires careful breeding and handling. Local Longhorn farmers include The Longhorn Beef Company of Whatton-in-the-Vale, Nottinghamshire; Quenby Hall of Leicestershire; and Tori and Ben’s Farm of Diseworth, Derbyshire. Raw Longhorn beef has regular marbling (the white strands of fat you see in uncooked steak), which is exactly what I’m looking for. During cooking, this marbling melts into the beef, enhancing taste and texture.
FIRST-CLASS STEAK When selecting your steak, look for a cut with a rich, deep-red colour with even marbling. Stay away from bright red cuts. Before cooking, sprinkle with black pepper and sea salt flakes, then place onto a very hot pan, not before the oil or butter’s sizzling. To take a 170g (6oz) steak to medium rare, cook for two to three minutes each side, then remove and rest for the same amount of time each side. The resting is crucial. Serve with English Mustard Béarnaise …
RECIPE Sean Hope’s English Mustard Béarnaise SERVES 4-6
• 2 egg yolks • 1 shallot, finely diced • 200g fresh, unsalted, melted butter • 1 tbsp sherry vinegar or white wine vinegar • 1 tbsp fresh tarragon, chopped • 1 level tsp English mustard 1. Combine shallot, egg yolks, tarragon and vinegar into a round-bottom bowl. 2. Whisk over a bain-marie (hot-water bath), so the heat from the steam causes egg yolk to go fluffy. 3. Take melted butter and very gradually pour into bowl, whisking ingredients all the time until mixture starts to thicken up. If it gets too thick, dilute with hot water. 4. At last minute, add the mustard and season to taste. Serve with your steak.

Blackberry and apple cocktail Autumn is well and truly here so you need to take advantage of the seasonal fruit while you still can. In October you can still find good, fresh blackberries and apples. You could combine them in a crumble or, alternatively, this drink is a great way to put them to good use. • 2 ladles blackberry rum • 2 tsp blackberry purée • 50ml apple juice • 1 tsp lime juice To make blackberry rum, put equal amounts of washed blackberries and caster sugar into a sterilised Mason jar and cover with a bottle of white rum. Leave in a cool, dark place from anything between two weeks and two months, shaking every so often. Strain through muslin before bottling. Alternatively, you could use readymade blackberry vodka. Blackberry purée is simply blackberries put through a food processor, with sugar added to taste. Serve in a highball glass.

It has become a firm favourite with locals, offering a two and three course set menu at lunch for £14.95 and a set 3-course dinner menu for £19.50, offering hard to beat value. The restaurant was recently voted by the Sunday Telegraph as one of the Top 150 restaurants in the UK. In some ways it is Stamford’s hidden gem, there are still some people that don’t know about it. Jim’s Yard was founded by Jim and Sharon Trevor and for the last several years they have been ably supported by Jimmy Ramsay, Head Chef; and Marc Smith, Restaurant Manager. In the last year these two have become co-owners of the business alongside Jim and Sharon. This has enabled Jim and Sharon to give greater focus to their other establishment, the burgeoning Beehive in Peterborough. So Jimmy and Marc are very much in charge now, passionate about every detail and determined to go on offering great value and service. Both have strong backgrounds, Jimmy having cooked at the Olive Branch and Marc having worked front of house at The George Hotel. They bring these skills and have added an air of

Hambleton Hall introduces its autumn menu from October 1st, with a still greater emphasis on the exploration of different ingredients, flavours and textures. The purpose of the changes, according to Aaron Patterson, the Head Chef, “is to offer a wider range of our favourite dishes at a fixed price.” The taster menu, priced at £72, takes you through a 7-course gastronomic journey and is a source of much discussion as each course arrives. The three-course menu of the day, priced at £65 (approx. six choices for each course), allows you to explore a whole range of delicious recipes without having to worry whether one or other items is more expensive than another – simpler to understand and changing on a regular basis during the season. In addition there is a Gourmet Corner, which will add a few dishes to which a supplement will apply, including luxury ingredients such as Foie Gras, Lobster etc. At lunch time a similar menu is available, with the addition of the ever popular Lunch for Less, priced at £24 for two courses and £6 for the third course. • Hambleton Hall, Hambleton Peninsula, LE15 8TH. Stamford and Rutland Hospital
H
Jean Orpin & Sue Lee visited Stamford Hospital to find out about its history and its place in the community today
enry Fryer, born in 1762 and a wealthy surgeon in the town, was a friend of the poor all his life. When he died in 1823 he left £21,000. Twenty institutions benefited from his will. The residue, £7,477, was earmarked to build an infirmary as long as it was built within 5 years. (A wise move in Stamford?) A committee was established with the Marquess of Exeter as Chairman and the Exeter family continued to chair it until 1948. The family were influential and it is probably due to them that the infirmary was completed within the required time. The Marquess provided the land. The infirmary, which was deigned for 20 in-patients, was built on the site of the Grey Friary. Since it opened in 1828 the hospital (as the infirmary is now known) has been extended a number of times, most recently 1991. Henry Fryer was not the only benefactor. Mr Rowles of Stilton left £11,285 in 1847 and Mrs Hodson left £200 for a porter’s lodge, which was built just inside the Grey Friars’ gatehouse. Edward Brown of Barn Hill House, the first house surgeon and apothecary, died in 1838, leaving £5,000 for a fever ward and £6,000 for maintenance. The hospital was originally funded by subscriptions and fundraising events. Eventually voluntary hospitals, became less dependent on legacies and donations with new income after 1870 coming from public collections, insurance and Friendly Societies. Since the NHS was established in 1948 the hospital has been the government’s responsibility but it still benefits from local fundraising.
Friends of the Hospital The Friends of Stamford Hospital celebrate their 50th birthday in October. In 1962 the NHS was in its infancy and it was realised there were gaps a charity could fill, and this still remains the case. Through the years the Friends have sought to encourage new services at the Hospital and have helped provide valuable equipment and continue to do so. Some funds are used to purchase the latest high tech equipment, and others for more simple but important items that can make the patients’ experience so much better, for example comfortable chairs, pictures and televisions. They also support the volunteers who work in the out-patient department, assisting staff by welcoming patients and visitors and running a bookstall. The Friends provide an important link with the community by promoting the interests of local people and over the years have been influential in ensuring that Stamford retains a hospital with up-
to-date services. They work closely with the Matron of the Hospital and the Peterborough and Stamford NHS Hospitals Foundation Trust. They also have met local politicians to help them keep abreast of the Hospital’s current needs. Members pay a minimum of £5 a year, receive two newsletters and have the opportunity to get together at events. They can also get more actively involved in this very worthwhile local charity. The larger the membership the more influence the Friends will have, and they are very keen to recruit new members You can find out more about the Friends and download a Membership form on www. friendsofstamfordhospital.org.uk or contact them at the Hospital.
Stamford & Rutland Hospital Museum When Sue Brooks arrived at Stamford Hospital as Matron, she found that there was an interest in the hospital’s history and scattered around the buildings a collection of odds and ends belonging to the hospital’s past. With an interest in history herself, she was pleased to encourage a small team of volunteers to meet and start gathering, cleaning and cataloguing these items. The Stamford & Rutland Hospital Heritage Group began work in earnest in 2009, soon finding that they had far more than they had realised. Plans to display the collection followed. An old ward was made available to them and with the help of the Friends, other benefactors and the Harry Skells Trust they were able to refurbish it and fit it out as a museum. The Heritage Group is still at work cataloguing the documents and new additions are continually being found or donated. As well as telling the story of Stamford’s Hospital, this small museum has packed in a tremendous amount of general medical history. Every wall, shelf and corner is of interest – nurse’s training manuals, hospital regulations, box of amputation instruments, Henry Fryer’s student notes, 1950s anaesthetic kit, plans of the hospital and much more. The ward itself is interesting as it is part of the 1870s extension and has Minton tile pictures inserted in the walls. • It may be small but do visit and be prepared to be fascinated – look out for opening times or contact Sue Brooks to arrange a visit. Grenville Crawford Grenville Crawford is a modern day legend from a past era, famed for his nonchalant perambulations around town. You will of course know exactly who I mean, if I tell you he carries a satchel, wears his hair long and has a penchant for loud wool trousers and a Great coat. Tracking him down in the William Cecil bar, Harjit Gammon caught up with the man behind the eccentric look
A
side from his strolling around Stamford, Grenville, who hails from Castle Bytham, is also prone to wandering the forests and fields of the surrounding countryside, though his natural habitat is Castle Farm, on the site of Bytham Castle, and the adjoining parkland, both of which are owned by his parents. Rather fittingly this larger than life character emanates from a place with an equally astonishing history. Mary Magdalene Chapel and dungeons lie concealed below the Castle mound, while elsewhere on the site was a Great Lake (now dry), medieval windmill foundations and those of a Roman Villa. Crawford reminisces that his childhood could not have been better, living as he did a somewhat Utopian existence, playing knights and working, as he puts it, in the Elysian Fields. The old farmhouse where he grew up was, however, rather cold in winter; the bedrooms were unheated and, as he says, very spooky. He recounts that there were 20 rooms, with 3 staircases rising from the ground floor, together with a locked attic staircase letting onto 5 rooms stuffed to the eaves with relics from a bygone age. The farmhouse was sold some time ago now, and the barns and stables converted to provide a home; which Grenville now inhabits. He describes himself as something of a “Knight Errant”, with deep spiritual conviction. He tells me, “I have learnt to understand the spirit world, interpret dreams and coincidences. The power of faith is remarkable. I spend much time locked in spiritual warfare with those intent on trying to discredit the reality of the Crucifixion. This can lead me into all sorts of unusual situations and trials, whilst allowing myself to be trained along the journey of life”. Though now a firm fixture in the Stamford/ Castle Bytham firmament, he has travelled and adventured widely and memorably, once living in the Pyrenees mountains for over two years with just a small cat for company, as he walked over 6000 miles on paths following in the footsteps of the ancient Troubadours. His love of the outdoors and history has also led to the exploration of castles here in Britain and along the Rhine in Germany, together with the climbing of mountains in Britain and Europe. Indeed he has hitchhiked across much of Europe, including sleeping in Swiss forests in temperatures of minus 18C, without a tent and, panning for gold at an opencast Roman goldmine in Spain. He attributes his wanderlust to his mother, something of an authority on the geography of Pakistan apparently, and the cultivator of
early interests in travel amongst her children. From somewhat tame childhood holidays in the Alps, Greece, Spain and the like Grenville has progressed to living in caves on the Canary Islands and several near misses in freakish accidents and disasters in Europe. Currently recovering from a deep vein thrombosis, and travels circumscribed, he is taking the opportunity to publicise and promote the history of Castle Bytham, internationally important as the ancestral home of George Washington, the 1st US president. Castle Bytham was also the main seat of the Mallory
family; Sir Thomas Mallory wrote the Arthurian legends, ‘Le Morte d’Arthur’, and was home to Henry IV’s children for some 4 years. Philippa went on to become the queen of Norway, Denmark and Sweden, while Blanche became princess of the Holy Roman Empire. Grenville opens the site for one day a year and hopes to hold events there in the future. In the meantime, however, he is happy wandering the site like King Arthur, in his very own Camelot, keeping one eye open in case Guinevere should pass by!
