Gosh, what a summer What an incredible summer it has been – outpourings of patriotism, and patriotism of a most positive sort. First the Diamond Jubilee, really a celebration of great public service, first and foremost of the Queen but also for all the many thousands of people up and down the country that work tirelessly for their communities. Then the cheering on of our athletes at the Olympics, men and women, black and white, excelling both in heroism and teamwork, supported by an enthusiastic band of volunteers (several of whom came from Stamford). Now the Paralympics, again astonishing feats of skill and endurance. So, as we re-commit ourselves to the world of work, of school, of new challenges, hopefully some of this can rub off on each of us and we can go about our day with just that extra bit of spring in our step and determination to do our bit for the world. We can all become winning heptathletes at our own disciplines! And as the dust settles on a fabulous London 2012 Olympic Games the attention of the eventing world now turns to The Land Rover Burghley Horse Trials (Aug 30 - Sept 2).

A Gentleman needs the right Time

In sleepy Stamford a firm of extraordinary watchmakers has crafted an entirely English-made, hand-wound, mechanical wristwatch. The 39mm case is hewn from Sheffield stainless steel and turned on English lathes. The traditional English movement is engraved with acanthus leaf and flowers, where the head of each flower contains a sparkling jewel. The movement is the same design that Sir Edmund Hillary wore to conquer Everest.

EXTRAORDINARY WATCHMAKERS

Robin is a limited edition of one hundred signed and numbered watches. Elegance and discretion combine to tell no more than an Englishman’s watch should do – the right time.

Sam

Samantha Drewery is the owner of Marcia May Shoes, so has never had any problem putting the right shoes with any outfit, but when it comes to herself she finds dressing for her shape hard work. Rosie introduced her to the pleasure of shopping at Cavells.

osie came up with some perfect wardrobe staples, with a nod to all the forthcoming trends, designed to minimise Sam’s bust and accentuate her size 10 figure. Rosie chose metallic coated denim to emphasise Sam’s slim legs. “I have never even tried on a pair of skinny jeans!” Sam exclaimed when she saw herself. A Rosamunde layering piece with deep lace trim elongates, when worn underneath a gauzy shirt in this case, but would equally work underneath a V-neck sweater or cardigan. “Nothing too thick around the waist,” Rosie explained. “When you move we still want to see your shape.”

Sam is the perfect Cavells customer, she enjoys help and assistance is always on hand. “Getting the right outfit is what it’s all about; don’t be intimidated by the choice!” Rosie’s style rules for Sam: Avoid crew and roll necks – go for V-necks and chiffon shirts, prints are great, nothing too solid or boxy. Emphasise slim legs with skinny jeans, especially if you are petit, and avoid flares.

wanted to keep hold of her long hair, so that it could be swept back for work. James was aware that Sarah has no time for maintenance so interwove various lowlights to achieve an overall cohesive head of colour aimed to create more movement with a contemporary natural-looking cut, enhanced by the lovely L’Oreal colours. James really took time in the initial consultation, getting to know Sarah’s concerns and has really achieved a funkier looking Sarah, especially when seen with the outfits for the photo-shoot. Mel worked wonders on our initial visit to Arch Label Agency and encouraged Sarah to try things on she never would have dared. Arch is always brimming with new pre-owned stock, so is the perfect shop to visit if you want a wardrobe update or a new to you complete outfit. Susie, the owner is passionate about clothes and with Sarah’s slim figure she particularly suited the chic Biker jacket and amazing VB slim jeans. “I felt cared for and pampered,” Sarah told me, just as it should be! We love the Reveal!

Her professional little salon, which is attached to her home, has been up and running for 16 months and with stylish patterned wallpaper and comfortable treatment chairs the salon has been finished to a first class standard. As an experienced stylist of over 20 years, the salon is an extension to her established mobile hairdressing business and Sandra offers a range of cutting, colouring and perms. As Sandra explained, “I appreciate how busy our lives are, so like to offer flexible appointments both in the salon and with mobile hairdressing and these include evening appointments.” With so much talent and enthusiasm, she has a strong following with lots of customers visiting via word of mouth, and with so much going for this friendly little salon, we just can’t wait to see what the future holds! • S & S Hair Design, 41 Caithness Road, Stamford, Lincs, PE9 2TF Tel: 01780 481873 or 07591 335551

Chalk Interiors

Emma Cannings has recently opened a new business at the top of the Stamford Garden Centre site restoring and re-painting old furniture. Emma told SL: “Here at Chalk, we love that pieces of furniture have a history all of their own, and we often imagine if they could talk what tales they may tell. Help! I need a new hairdresser Bad hair day? Or perhaps the wrong style altogether? If you’re feeling in need of a revamp, Genevieve Potter has an in-depth guide to some of the best-known salons in Stamford

You will also find one of the best ranges of hair care products available locally; current salon favourites are Paul Mitchell (including their products for coloured hair), Moroccan Oil, TIGI, Evo and Unite, America’s number one,

Gerards

The Gerard’s salon is something of an institution in Stamford, situated in the beautiful surroundings of The George Hotel Mews. Gerard’s is an Aveda salon, a brand famous for its passion for all things natural (even the hair colours are up to 95% plant derived) and the team echo this philosophy; combining high-performance hair and beauty services with the well-being of their clients. The environment is wonderfully light and airy and as one loyal customer puts it: “The whole Gerard’s team really care passionately about what they are doing and it really comes across. I used to walk out of my previous hairdressers’ feeling slightly fraught and self-conscious about my hair looking too ‘done’, but since I have been coming to Gerards I leave feeling a million dollars.” Jayne Chandler is the salon owner, with a hard-earned reputation as one of the region’s best hair technicians, ably supported by her experienced creative team Nicola (Salon Director and wedding hair specialist), Hollie (an accomplished Aveda colourist and make-up/beauty specialist, Stef, who specialises in the very latest techniques and styles and Anneli who is a firm favourite with clients with her calm, considered approach as well as being a trained Aveda make-up and beauty artist. If you fancy a spot of lunch or afternoon tea, refreshments can be provided by the famous George Hotel and you can also get a luxury Jessica manicure during your visit (the salon also offers waxing and Aveda make-up application and lessons).

Maples

Maples is the team behind the gorgeous hair styles in this month’s fashion makeovers. The Maples salon is situated in an impressive Georgian building right in the heart of Stamford and is a modern, buzzing business that contrasts beautifully with its grand surroundings. The emphasis of the salon is to provide exceptional customer service, using top quality products for optimum results, including Kerastase hair care products and L’Oreal colour (L’Oreal have an extensive range of colour ranging from natural tones to bright, vibrant hues). The Maples hair team are also exceptionally experienced; James is the senior member of the team, Charlotte is a men’s hair and colour expert and Jade is the wedding and hair extension specialist.

What’s new to the salon?

Maples have just launched Great Lengths Hair extensions; this is a premium brand of hair extensions sported by many high profile celebrities. They are ideal for anyone who wants to add not just length, but body and volume to their hair. The salon will be offering free consultations and special offers for Great Lengths during the month of September.

What’s new to the salon?

The Aveda Pure Abundance range is now in stock and is heavensent for fine, limp hair. The product range includes a Style Prep treatment, packed full of botanical ingredients such as passion fruit, acai oil and organic aloe which literally grab on to the hair roots and strands to noticeably volumise and thicken.

Extras and costs

The salon has become a destination for the region’s discerning brides, with Nicola leading this service and using her extensive experience in wedding hair and fashion shoots to offer a personal service during the lead up to the wedding and on the big day itself. Aveda colour starts from a value-conscious £30, with a cut and finish from £35. The team encourage free consultations prior to a new client’s first appointment, so that they can get to know them and understand their requirements (for wedding hair costs and services; please enquire or call in). • Gerard’s, George Hotel Mews, Stamford, PE9 2LB Tel: 01780 753002 www.gerardhair-beauty.co.uk

Garie Nigel Hairwork

Extras and costs

Maples is also home to a thriving beauty business and this is evident in the service you can expect to receive in the salon. For example, customers are offered Clarins Hyrda Quench serum to apply over their make-up, to stop dehydration whilst having their hair done and hot flannels (rather than prickly brushes!) are offered to clients to wipe away hair trimmings. There’s also a refreshments menu if you fancy a cup of tea or even a cold beer or glass of wine. Look out too for a new loyalty scheme which starts this September. Despite the opulent surroundings, prices are very reasonable; a blow dry starts from £16 and a re-style and blow-dry from £35. • Maples of Stamford, 24 St Mary’s Street, Stamford, PE9 2DJ Tel: 01780 752725 www.maplesofstamford.co.uk

Garie Nigel Hairwork was established back in 1986 and the salon now has the status of being a Wella Premier Salon. The salon has a cool, relaxed feel and it has maintained a strong identity and a sense of real friendliness over the years. The salon stocks a wide range of TIGI products and working alongside Garie himself are Senior Designers Natalie and Michelle, plus three other Designers, who between them, have clients who have been loyal to the salon since it opened, which speaks volumes for the service that is on offer.

What’s new to the salon?

Garie has just introduced the Kebelo smoothing system, which gives you 100 days of luxurious frizz-free hair. The process takes about one and a half hours and starts at £99 for short hair or £139 on medium to long. Included in the price of

the smoothing treatment is a special take-home box, comprising Kebelo shampoo, conditioner, plus a hair masque to keep your hair feeling glossy and frizz-free for even longer.

Extras and costs

If you’re maximising your time in the salon, lunch can be provided from Beans Coffee Stop and there is and wi-fi access available should you need to stay in touch with the outside world. The salon is open until 8 pm on Thursdays and Fridays and for early-birds, from 8 am on a Saturday. Ride On! This summer we’ve been inspired by the outstanding Olympics Equestrian medals and the return of the spectacular Burghley Horse Trials right on our doorstep. So if that’s got you motivated to give riding a go yourself, here’s the local guide to getting involved. By Charlotte Newby

Riding Lessons & Livery

I

f you are considering riding lessons for the first time, it’s worth knowing that there are two organisations that set the standards for riding schools: the Association of British Riding Schools (ABRS) and the British Horse Society (BHS). Riding schools are inspected every year, so annual approval by one or both of these organisations ensures that a riding school meets the standards required by them. Both bodies also set riding instruction examinations. Here are three local stables to explore: Grasslands Equestrian Centre is a well-equipped stables set in the peaceful village of Helpston. They are BHS and ABRS approved and RDA (Riding for the Disabled Association) members. Lessons are offered daily, weekly and at weekends on either a private or group basis, catering for all ages and abilities. There are two outdoor floodlit all-weather rubber and silica sand surface schools. Hacking is available for competent riders. Full livery facilities are also offered.

Set in the beautiful Leicestershire countryside, Somerby Equestrian Centre has been established for over 20 years and is a busy and friendly equestrian centre. Approved by both the ABRS and the BHS, it has an indoor and outdoor school and welcomes complete beginners and experienced competition riders alike. The centre offers a range of services including lessons, a quality livery facility in peaceful surroundings, hacking and corporate events. During the school holidays they run children’s courses, from pony days to five-day residential summer camps. There’s a pony club for youngsters wishing to get involved in looking after horses and you can even hold children’s parties there with various exciting riding-based activities for children of four years and above. Close to Stamford, Uffington Riding Stables is a welcoming and unpretentious stables. They specialise in group and private lessons for children, giving them the opportunity to ride and enjoy the company of horses in a safe and friendly environment. All the staff there are experienced and work hard to make lessons both fun and educational using safe ponies and one-to-one assistance when required. Kate Burton who works at the stables explains that they strive to improve confidence in even the most nervous of beginners. With their crew of experienced schoolmasters, they cater for a wide range of riders from young children to Grade A show jumpers. During holidays they offer activity days for children of mixed ages and abilities. They learn how to wash and groom their horses, play games and improve their riding technique. Speaking to parents of children who have attended the sessions, it’s clear that the children have tons of fun and get a lot out of their day. Activity days cost around £33 for a 10am-3pm day; there’s also a two-day course that’s a bit more technical and competitive. Call Lisa or Kate for more information.

Clothing

If you are starting out, it is not necessary to dash to the shops to buy the whole kit straight away. A good riding school will have a variety of riding hats in different sizes for beginners to hire for lessons. Comfy trousers are a must – trousers that are too tight will restrict movement and baggy trousers could flap around. Boots or shoes should have a small heel and a not-too-chunky grip. If you – or your child – decide to continue with riding, then it’s worth investing in some proper equestrian clothing for the sake of safety and comfort. T&C Robinson on St Mary’s Street is a family run firm that’s been in the business of saddlery and bridle work

16

since 1905. The shop in Stamford stocks a whole range of riding wear, ranging from velvet and skull hats, jackets and body protectors, jodhpurs, breeches and boots. The staff are knowledgeable and will help kit you out with the items you need and can source saddles/tack etc from their Billinghay store. You’ll also find equestrian wear at Chandlers country store in Barnack. They stock the complete range from casual and competition clothing, hats, body protection, boots and boot bags, gloves and hairnets, plus equestrian tack and rugs, and feed supplements. If you’re looking for outdoor clothing and gear that’ll keep you warm through the autumn and winter months, whether

you’re mucking out stables or watching your children learn how to ride, Barnack Country Clothes stocks everything from jackets and coats, fleeces, leather boots, wellies and socks. Finally, if you thought that CWG on Uffington Road (near Morrison’s) was just for farmers, think again. They stock a great line in equestrian clothing and horse-ware. There are jodhpurs, jackets, gilets and hats, plus lined turnout rugs, horse feed and horse-care products. The products are well priced and staff are always helpful. You might be interested to know that they also sell loads of pet products, useful items for chicken keeping, plus outdoor clothes, a range of wellies and even power tools.

Cross Country Trails

ant to take your horse on an adventure? Try this! Ketton Park Cross Country Course has been run by Janet Mills for more than 30 years. It’s set within the picturesque Chater Valley, a quarter mile west of Ketton village. It’s a 1.6 mile cross country course for riders of all skills, mainly over old turf and woodland, and comprises thirty obstacles – a water complex, coffin, trakhener, ditches, banks, steps, corner and fences of 2’9” and 3’3”. Call Janet for details on 01780 460226.

Take Back The Reigns

Y

ou may have enjoyed riding as a youngster but now feel too daunted by the prospect to get back in the saddle. In which case a new initiative supported by Sport England and the British Equestrian Federation (BEF) to encourage new and returner adult riders back into the sport might be just the incentive you need. It’s a series of riding lessons specifically designed to develop your skill and confidence, improve fitness and make sure you have fun in the process. Take Back The Reigns offers special places in specific approved riding schools, and Somerby Equestrian Centre is one of those. Call them direct for more information or see the BEF’s ‘Hoof’ website for details: www.hoofride.co.uk.

Rick Hall

Victoria Bullimore met with Rick Hall, a very special sort of car dealer with a classic racing pedigree of his own could talk for hours with people who have a real love and understanding of racing cars.” “Like who? Anyone I should know?” I ask, hoping to catch some names as they drop. “We sold a Ferrari 250 Lussso to Jay Kay, and recently we were working on a clutch job for Chris Evans, and have worked on several projects with Sir Stirling Moss.” “And a little bird told me you’re running a car for Mark Knopfler?” “Yes, and we know Chris Rea, as well as Nick Mason and Dave Gilmour of Pink Floyd.” What is it about ageing rockers and racing cars? I am pondering this as I scribble my notes, when Rick starts to tell the story of how he sold an ERA to the King of Thailand. Wow! I ask him if he had to walk out of the room backwards (Rick, not the King of Thailand) but His Majesty did business via three of his delegates, who wanted to call the AA for a second opinion because it had no mudguards. The car is now in the Imperial Palace in Bangkok. Rick Hall

I

magine, if you can, that you have several million US dollars to spend. Hmmm…what to buy? Well if you wander on down to Hall & Hall in Bourne you could treat yourself to a 1939 Auto Union D-Type racing car. When I ask Rick Hall, talented racing driver, specialist mechanic and car dealer extraordinaire, what makes the Auto Union so valuable he explains that only five of them were ever made and now only three remain. He describes all the cars he deals with as “works of art”, and as such their value can go up or down depending on a number of factors that influence the market. I managed to catch the incredibly busy and ubiquitous Rick Hall on his return from a motor show in Paris and just before whizzing off again to Switzerland. He has the charming, unassuming manner of a man whose head can’t be turned by all the money and famous names that come in and out of his family run business, and although he tries humbly to deny it, there’s no doubt the world of historic racing cars is coloured by glamour. In the workshop I get the whiff of tyre rubber, engine oil and by-gone thrills from an era when motor racing was truly dangerous and no one had ever heard of onboard computers and wings were just for birds. Rick was born in 1948 in Bourne, and as a teenager began working as a mechanic in his father’s garage in the village of Morton in Lincolnshire. He then moved to BRM, who were based in Bourne, where he started as an engine

20

shop engineer, progressing in the 70s onto race mechanic with the works BRM team. Rick always had a burning desire to race, and started karting when he was 14. I could fill this whole page with a list of his racing achievements, but here’s just a few – in 1989, driving a pre71 McLaren M10B F5000, he broke five lap records, won seven races and ultimately the championship, and in 1990 he raced a pre-71 Surtees TS8 F5000 to win the same championship for the second year running. In 2006 he raced a Ferrari 750 to victory in the Le Mans Classic, and over the years has taken first place at Silverstone, Melbourne, Monterey, Donington Park amongst many others, driving a variety of cars including AC Cobras, Aston Martins, Lotuses and BRMs (not glamorous, eh Rick?). Rick founded the business in 1977 with ex-BRM worker Rob Fowler, calling it Hall & Fowler and then Hall & Hall as he moved into partnership with his son Rob, who has inherited all of his skills as mechanic and driver. Now the company has a respected international reputation in historic single seater and sports racing car restoration and sales. Hall & Hall employ several skilled mechanics who have been trained on the job. “They come here knowing all about traction control and ABS, which is completely useless here.” Rick says it’s not all just about the cars; he also loves meeting the people who share his passion. “I love enthusiasm,” he says, “and I

I ask Rob to answer the quick fire round on Rick’s behalf. Does he like Marmite? Yes. Cats or dogs? Dogs. What’s his favourite tipple? Red Wine. Any particular sort or any old plonk? Something expensive, with someone else paying for it. What’s he reading right now? Bernie Ecclestone’s autobiography. Can he sing? Yes. But really badly. What was the last film he saw? “Senna”. Who is his hero? David Attenborough. Many years ago Rick wrote to him and asked him for a job. Really? What happened? He never replied. Thank goodness he didn’t. The world of historic motor racing would have been robbed.

The forthcoming BRM Day in Bourne Damon Hill will be coming to the town to drive his father’s racing car through the streets as part of the celebrations marking the 50th anniversary of BRM’s World Grand Prix Championship win, and Rick is one of the organisers. It takes place on the Sunday 7th October and more information can be found on the following link: www.brmday.co.uk

Norwich Get to know

Just a train ride or a short drive away, Norwich, the ‘Fine City’ has much to offer the day tripper. Words and illustrations by Alanna Richardson

W

ith its bustling promenades and excellent shopping malls with some 200 well loved high street names, it would be very easy to spend the whole day dosing-up on retail therapy in Norwich. However, a day here deserves a slightly more enquiring eye if one is to really make the most of this spritely and warm hearted city. The market place marks the centre point of Norwich, from which streets, lanes and alleys meander away in haphazard webs. This makes the market, a permanent fixture of coloured awnings outside the grand City Hall, an ideal first port of call. The stalls, many open five days a week, are well worth exploring, with traders selling everything from pints of winkles and bunches of anemones to beeswax candles. The Cheeseman (stand 63C), Herbs & Spice (stand 43B) and Norwich Fudge Company (stand 51B) are well worth investigation. And to any meat-eaters: don’t leave Norwich without purchasing from Pickerings Gourmet Sausages (stand 103E). Truly a superb sausage. Opposite the market is the Royal Arcade, a late Victorian mall with elegant Art Deco features which makes for wonderful browsing time. This is the home of the Colman’s Mustard Shop; an eccentric little place recounting the 200 year story of the brand and selling a bounty of preserves, pickles and of course the hot yellow stuff. The Royal Arcade also houses pretty fashion boutiques Tangerine and Poppy Valentine, while tweeds, garters and wellingtons can be found in Gallyons City & Country Clothing. Digby’s Fine Chocolates is a must for those with a sweet tooth, while children or those young at heart will enjoy Langleys Toys. The Royal Arcade is just a stone’s throw from Norwich Castle Museum. With its collections of Saxon gold, the Twining teapot collection and the 12th Century Castle Keep it offers vibrant interactive learning for all the family. On a clear day, a tour of the castle battlements offers a superb vantage point from which to appreciate a 360 degree view of the Norwich sky line. Back at the market place, you’ll find the regal Guild Hall with its ornate

26

facade of checkerboard limestone and flint from the early 1400s. The building stands magnificently among its twentieth century fellows. Visit Caley’s Cocoa Cafe for no other reason than to buy Florentines or cherry liqueur chocolates and to view the splendid interior of the old court room, now the café premises. From here, Dove Street, Lower Goat Lane, Bedford Street and St Giles Street offer a wealth of independent retailers: boutiques, mens’ outfitters, cafés, bars, jewellers and home accessories. While in this area keep an eye out for Ronaldo’s ice cream wagons. There is often one outside St Gregory’s church or on London Street. Their clotted cream and gooseberry or damson ice cream domed onto a waffle cone is a necessity on any summer’s day. A CITY OF CHURCHES While exploring the lanes of Norwich it is near impossible to disregard the number of churches you pass. There is pretty much one on every street corner! At Norfolk’s

STAMFORD LIVING SEPTEMBER 2012

medieval height there were around 60 in Norwich and half a dozen monastic houses. Thirty-six churches remain, not including the two spectacular cathedrals which flank the east and west of the city. Many of the church buildings have since been deconsecrated and are now used as culture, arts and music venues. Nonetheless each church, from the neat but dumpy St Peter Hungate at the top of Elm Hill to the extrovert St Peter Mancroft opposite the Forum, provides an impressive archaic presence and a constant reminder of Norwich’s prestigious social history. The jewel in the crown of the Norwich lanes has to be Elm Hill. This cobbled street, running adjacent to the river Wensum, is the most famous of the city’s

medieval streets. The shops are delightful. There are treasure troves of antique and collectors shops and a handful of wonderful cafés. From Elm Hill, the Norman Cathedral is only a five minute walk. Take a look inside the cathedral with your eyes raised to the ceiling: you’ll see an abundance of medieval roof bosses found in the cloisters, and the soaring heights and exquisite light of the transept. The Cathedral Close is another treat. The Cathedral Herb Garden and the picturesque Ferry Lane, framed by the ancient river gate of Pull’s Ferry is a pleasant stroll. No day in this Fine City would be complete without frequent café stops. Within the streets of Norwich nestle some of the most delectably delicious and cheery little cafés you may ever encounter. Here are my top five places: The Bicycle Shop, St Benedict’s Street Formerly a push-bike shop, this café-bar has a dark wooden interior and mismatched furniture. Enjoy a seasonal menu often including Beetroot and Feta Oat Crepes and Potted Norfolk Shrimp on Toast, while reclining on spindle chairs with pots of tea or perhaps a cheeky malt whiskey! Atmosphere: 4/5 Tastiness: 4/5 Space for shopping bags: 5/5 Mustard Coffee Bar, Bridewell Alley Freshly roast and ground coffee and a warm welcome await you at the pint-sized Mustard. I recommend brunching on the scotch eggs and sausage rolls, accompanying a well-made latte. Daily specials, such as Zanzibar Chicken and Sri Lankan Fish Curry are on offer. Atmosphere: 3/5 Tastiness: 5/5 Space for shopping bags: 2/5

The Britons Arms, Elm Hill Placed in the heart of cobbled Tudor streets, the Britons Arms is beloved by all Norwich folk. Go here for tea and cake and when the sun shines sit out on their tiny terrace garden over looked by passion flowers, slate roof tops and black headed gulls. Alpha Course

UPDATES

Keep Searching …. That’s the theme for this autumn’s Alpha Course. If you’re searching, then churches in Stamford could be the place you find the answer

S

t George’s and a number of other churches will be hosting a 10 week Alpha course, and there will also be a Youth Alpha course. The course covers the basics of the Christian faith. 17 million people worldwide have done the course. Here are just a few words from local people about their experience …. Tom: “Before Alpha I knew there was a God, but really didn’t understand all the stuff and jargon; after Alpha I stopped worrying about the words and who said what. I realised that there is a God, but his son Jesus is how we get into a relationship with him.” He uses the words from the hymn Amazing Grace “I once was lost but now am found, was blind but now I see!” James: “I’d been struggling with a cannabis addiction for 7-8 years. It affected my relationships with friends and family, my work, I was in debt. I decided that Alpha would give me an introduction to Christianity and answer some of the questions I had. The main question I had was why had God left it so long to let me know the good that he could bring to my life and take me away from my destructive lifestyle? The answer – He was always there just waiting for me! It’s a great way to discover more about Christianity and meet new people.” Nicola: “I was a non-Christian all my 60+ years, I retired and 3 years ago moved to Stamford. I had a growing curiosity about Christianity. 6 months later I came down with ME. I was very ill for some months, and hit the bottom of the pit. I had been thinking about going to Alpha. The closer the course came the easier the symptoms became. Part of my experience was letting people help me. During the course I had prayer to heal me of the ME and the last of the ME symptoms left me.” Nicola now heads up the new Stamford Foodbank charity. So many questions in life …. Why keep searching? Come to St George’s Church on the 25th September at 7:30pm for an invitation party. Singer/song writer Bryn Haworth will be playing some of his songs and sharing his story. Ring St George’s Church office for your free ticket telephone 01780 481800.

L’Oliveto Tre Nicholas Rudd-Jones tries out Stamford’s latest Italian eatery with his two boys

L

’Olivetos has the feeling of a very well-established restaurant, tucked away down Old Barn Passage between St Mary’s St and Bath Row, but surprisingly it is still in its first year. Perhaps it’s because it’s the third in a well established trio of restaurants, or perhaps because of the friendliness and general bonhomie of the welcome. The large dining room is on the first floor with views over the meadows; style-wise it is a very inviting space, combining tones of informality with more formal table settings. And this really sets the tone of the place and the food – formal elements, all the classic Italian dishes with rich sauces, but also all the ‘Italian comfort food’ favourites. After a hard day’s canoeing we were looking for food that was both delicious and filling, and this we certainly found. We shared a Bruschetta Rustica to start (very substantial) and then moved on to the mains: Sammy had the Suprema di Pollo Principessa, which was soon wolfed down; David had the Tagliatelli Montecarlo, pasta ribbons served with monkish – he thought the fish was excellent; and I had Spaghetti carbonara, which was the ultimate comfort food that I was craving for. As well as the set menu, there are a large number of specials, notably all types of fish and seafood which is a real strength of the establishment. Desserts were of course inevitable, and they proved as substantial and sweet as we would have wished for; a Tiramisu, Chocolate Profiteroles and a trio of Sorbet; and no there was absolutely no sharing! So, the place hit all the right spots for us and is definitely recommended. Value will depend on whether you stick with the main menu (good value) or go for the more expensive specials. • L’Oliveto Tre, Old Barn Passage, St Mary’s St, Stamford, PE9 2HG

L OCA L WALK

POLEBROOK AND BARNWELL Two picture postcard villages, two delightful pubs and lots of rolling countryside make this a splendid walk POINTS OF INTEREST Polebrook: Polebrook is an ancient village mentioned in the Domesday Book. The church dates back to the 12th century and has a clock of particular note. 2 miles E is the disused Polebrook Airfield, which was a US base in WWII. For some time Clark Gable was based there as an air gunner, and he made morale-boosting visits to the neighbourhood. Barnwell: The remains of Barnwell Castle can be seen in the distance beside Barnwell Manor on the walk. It is believed to have been built around 1266, and was described by Pevsner as 'the first example in Britain of the most monumental type of castle architecture’. The site is private property.

Park outside the King’s Head in Polebrook and proceed south along a small road, then a footpath which crosses a footbridge and then reaches a dirt track. Take this track, which soon becomes tarmac-ed, south, which then swings west into Armston, just a farm and a couple of houses Just opposite the last house the path takes off left across a field in a SW direction, hugging the edge of Armston Grove, going past a house in the wood, and soon coming out on a field and meadow with lovely views towards Barnwell Manor and the ruined castle When the path reaches the road, turn right into Barnwell and then left alongside the stream, marked the Nene Way. It is simplest then to stay on the road, which becomes a track, all the way out of the village, until it reaches a footbridge over a little stream where you re-connect with the footpath Follow this well-marked path upwards across a field, until you reach a metalled track. Turn left (SE) and follow this until you reach the far end of Bull Nose Coppice. Here, where you will see two paths, take the one turning sharp left and head north. A good point on the horizon that you will start to see at this stage is a water tower and the path continues to head towards it, first past South Lodge Farm and then across a road, and circling to the east of North Lodge Farm (when we did the walk, this part of the path was very indistinct across the field and we had to follow the tractor tracks) As you draw almost level with the water tower a few hundred yards to your right, you cross another road; keep heading N and then W at the next field boundary (the path is not too clear at this stage). At the next field boundary you turn right again (N) and soon you will see a well-marked path cutting diagonally across a field into a wood, which you take Coming out of the wood, you have a stile in a locked gate to cross, and then straight down across a field back towards Polebrook and the pub.

Chronicler of the

Countryside Artist Carry Akroyd’s striking work captures the changes and challenges facing the English countryside. Fiona Cumberpatch met her at home in Northamptonshire. Photos: Lesley Anne Churchill

F

inding artist Carry Akroyd’s Victorian cottage involves an intricate hand drawn map and a drive through a labrynth of country lanes. Fittingly for a printmaker and painter whose work is both a testament to, and a requiem for, a vanishing rural English landscape, she lives in a tiny hamlet amongst the Northamptonshire fields, streams and meadows that inspire her. “I grew up in nearby Barnwell, and I never really thought that the area was so beautiful, I must always live here,” explains Carry. “Then I went away, to teach in London, and to travel, and it was while I was in India that I missed the greyness and ordinariness of it all. It has no tourist falseness about it.” Carry’s work often depicts native species, the hare, the fox, herons, in a stylised, almost emblematic depiction of the countryside. She works with various media: screen prints, lino cuts, and watercolours. “I’m primarily a printmaker, but some ideas will demand to be a painting. I like to do different things,” she

32

says. “What I am always trying to create is the sensation of being somewhere, so I’m collecting the information that contributes to my initial feeling of what I saw and felt when I first saw that place.” To help evoke that response, she uses colour unexpectedly – a pink infused stark winter landscape, for example. “I’ve always had a very instinctive use of colour. I know when a colour is wrong, but it’s wrong in my terms, not in terms of accuracy,” she suggests. The cottage which she shares with partner Gordon Monk and their dog, Mephistopheles, reflects Carry’s affinity with colour. But there is nothing contrived about her surroundings. “I’ve lived here for 28 years, but I’ve had hardly anything new for the house, apart from the chairs which Gordon has made,” says Carry. They are beautiful, organic structures, made from cherry wood, ash and an oak piece which has been treated with vinegar and wire wool, to turn it a deep, inky black. Originally two cottages, dating to 1870, Carry’s house was knocked into one during the 1950s, creating a

higgledy piggledy layout of rooms. “Everything slopes in this house,” she says. A small kitchen leads off a snug dining area, heated by a Rayburn which Carry and Gordon use to provide hot water, heat the radiators, do the cooking and, in winter, dry the washing. “During the colder months, I work in this room if I haven’t lit the wood burner in my studio,” says Carry. She works constantly, on commissions (currently a set of book covers) as well as regular national and local exhibitions, and writing and illustrating her own books. She recently completed a set of 16 lithographs, using some of the words of the Helpston poet John Clare (1793-1864). Her connection to Clare remains a strong and pivotal part of her work. Although the poet is enjoying a revival, with an

annual Festival in Helpston, the village of his birth(once in Northamptonshire, but now in Cambridgeshire) an active society celebrating his work, and several recent novels inspired by his life, Carry Akroyd came to him long before he was fashionable. “It was during the 1980s when wheat subsidies were at an all time high, and we lost ponds, hedges, trees and every little scrappy corner of wilderness to intensive arable farming,” she explains. “These agricultural changes were so intense, it felt like the front line. John Clare was outraged by the high wheat prices and Enclosures Acts of his day, which changed the landscape around him and prompted his outpourings. I had not turned to him before, but developments in farming made me read his work and ultimately, it lead to me writing my book, Nature’s Powers & Spells, Landscape Change, John Clare and Me. He still inspires me, as he is such a visual poet, and he has an unsentimental, knowledgeable way of looking at the world, and finding just the right expression.” Carry often sketches in the field, and her home and garden are full of objects which she’s found on her travels. In the garden, she has made a path using round pebbles which she has gathered over the years. “They are glacially rounded and they’re here because of the Ice Age,” she says. “I’ve also found medieval pottery, which made me very interested in archaeology.” Beachcombing is another passion, and she has a huge collection of coloured fishing floats outside, and inside, a large bleached chunk of bone from a sperm whale. She has experimented with ironwork, and has made a small and rather wonderful sculpture of a fox (a recurrent image in her work) which she cut out using an oxyacetylene torch. Success has been a slow burn for Carry Akroyd, but her work has never been more relevant, as humankind and the natural world intensify their painful dance. “Things have improved since the 1980s, but any recovery will not last if wheat prices rise again,” says Carry. The trend towards large, intensive indoor dairy farms disturbs her: “we will lose grassland and grazing and that will have a tremendous impact on our flora and fauna,” she says. “Economics will always win out.” In the meantime, she will continue to document the fields and the skies, and the creatures and plants that thrive there. “People always believe they have to go somewhere else to see beauty rather than understanding what is right under their nose,” she says. It’s that capacity to make the ordinary seem extraordinary which makes her work so captivating. www.carryakroyd.co.uk STAMFORD LIVING SEPTEMBER 2012

Spiegl Press

UPDATES

Nicholas Rudd-Jones visited Spiegl Press in the Ryhall Rd and discovered a specialist printer with national reach and a set of traditional printing techniques that are now coming back into vogue

S

piegl Press is a revelation, using artisan craft techniques to create a wow factor in your printed material or invitations that will wow potential clients or guests and set your business or event apart from the rest. It’s a tight-knit team, run by Hugo Spiegl, with a big focus on customer service. No job is too small and in some ways the more challenging the better. If you need work that really stands out and says something unique about you then these are the people to come to. Jo Spiegl, a Director of the business, showed me some of their work: an exquisite visitors’ book for the Royal Artillery 16th regiment, a brochure for Robert Loomes’ handmade watches, a launch prospectus for Matthew Cox’s new antique emporium; and all sorts of wedding stationery from the classic to the very personal and one-off. Whilst Spiegl Press has all the lithographic capability in-house that you might need for leaflets or basic stationery, it is their specialist capabilities that enable them to create such unique work: • A Heidelberg letterpress for old-fashioned printing • A Thermographer that allows for raised print, giving a real quality feel • Hot Foil Blocking, which creates a shiny metal effect print Spiegl Press also publish a number of books (one on Rutland churches is due out soon) and print books on behalf of customers (the history of Copthill School is being worked on at the moment). They also have several areas of specialist printing with a national reach, including printing for auctioneers and salesrooms and livestock shows. • Spiegl Press Limited, 42 Guash Way, Ryhall Road, Stamford, PE9 1XH Tel: 01780 762550 www.spieglpress.com

Making a positive impact on children’s lives

W

ith Peterborough running a campaign to recruit 40 more foster carers to help care for the 300+ children in care in the city, we find what it is really like to provide a safe and happy home to these children while they are unable to live with their own families. Vivien Garside, along with her husband, has been fostering for eight years and they have two children of their own. Here Vivien tells us about her fostering experience. How many children have you cared for? “We have cared for more than 30 children from varying ages, each one having their own individual challenges. We have experienced some children with behavioural difficulties, some with concerning health conditions, some who have settled within hours of being introduced to us, and others that have taken months to get to know us and gain a trust in the care they will receive.” What made you decide to become a foster carer? “Before having my own children and becoming a

foster carer I was an operations director for an investment bank. I gave up my career when I became pregnant with my son, who is now ten years old, and devoted my time to my family and to those foster children who are entrusted into our care. I believe that every child should have a loving home and happy memories that go along with that, and that’s part of the reason why we became foster carers. The satisfaction of seeing the child develop, thrive and flourish is why we have continued to foster for the last several years.”

What would you say to anyone considering fostering? “If you are considering becoming a foster parent, or if you are curious what fostering is about, or what you could offer a child, then give Peterborough City Council a call. This is what I did several years ago and have not looked back since. Make investigations, because if you don’t ask, you don’t know, and then you’ll always wonder. It may well change your life like it has mine.”

What qualities do you need to be a foster carer? “You don’t have to be a perfect parent, those just don’t exist. But you do need to have an open mind when you foster, you can’t be judgemental and you have to be very flexible, enthusiastic, and patient, have a sense of humour and be prepared to give the children your time. If you have gaps in your knowledge or experience these can be explored and appropriate training can be put in place. Don’t be put off enquiring just because you think you’re not this, or you’re not that – leave that to the professionals to work through with you.”

Mary Benzies, Stamford Senior Youth Theatre

Mary Benzies abandoned a promising career as an actress when she discovered a passion for Youth Theatre. Now working all around the region as a freelance drama teacher and as part of the Tolethorpe youth drama team, Amander Meade meets her to find out what motivates this inspirational director

T

he theatre is in Mary’s blood as her father was a professional actor and her uncle a great patron of the arts. She admits however, it could have gone either way as her earliest theatrical memory is of being taken, aged eight, to see Macbeth… performed in German! “Somehow it was all the more powerful as I couldn’t understand the speech and I was hooked.” Her family were in the audience for almost everything performed in their native Dublin and at fifteen, Mary spent the summer sweeping floors and making coffee at the Project Arts Centre in the city, the start of many holiday jobs in theatres – “I worked for next to nothing but learned theatre craft from the ground up. Eventually I became involved with the Dublin Youth Theatre – the first of its kind in Ireland and home to the finest directorial, writing and performing talent in the country.” Mary gained a place to study drama at the prestigious Trinity College and likens the experience to an army training camp – “The course was so very intense; we were forced to learn all about ourselves and the reality of our talent – something I use still in my work today and which is in complete contrast to how TV talent shows work.” Studies complete, Mary was much in demand for theatre and television roles but whilst running a one off workshop found she loved theatre in education which culminated in her launching a successful Youth Theatre in Dublin which continues to thrive.”

38

Moving to England in 2005 with husband Mike meant Mary had to search for a new home and a new project; she found both in this region. “I discovered Stamford Arts Centre where the team are just fantastic and have been nothing but supportive.” Impressed by the wealth of talent among the older teens performing there, Mary and a group of sixteen to eighteen year olds wrote and performed a piece to huge acclaim, going on to form their own company aspiring to devise and create original plays. “Young people love their opinions to be heard and theatre is a great way to encourage dialogue not only with their peers but their parents too.” The Stamford Senior Youth Theatre hold auditions in September and by Christmas have created a script. Their work is performed over three nights at Stamford Arts Centre before touring the region’s secondary schools where the cast facilitate and run workshops. “It is incredible to watch the younger students responding to both the play and the follow up work with the cast and such an empowering and valuable experience for the members of the company too. This year’s

tour has been a phenomenal success and a testament to the talent and hard work of those involved.” Lots of Mary’s students do go on to study theatre and often the tour is the clincher that makes up their mind either way. “Just as I found during my own training, this business is real hard graft – the company help set up and remove the sets as well as performing and so the starts are early and the days are long - they find out that commitment is every bit as important as talent.” Despite economic challenges, Mary still has a fierce passion for Youth Theatre and plans to develop her group still further. “I think we can publish some of our work for other groups to use and we would like to perform at festivals around the UK as well as locally. It would be great to take the company back to the Youth Theatre in Dublin where it all began for me – that would be a fantastic full circle.” • A final chance to audition takes place on Monday 17 September from 5.30pm – group workshop followed by individual interview. EATING OUT

EATING A LITTLE FURTHER AFIELD New Menu at The Pavilion, Stapleford Park Abigail Richardson tests the Pavilion to its extremes!

T

he Pavilion at Stapleford Park has recently launched an exciting new menu, offering a relaxing dining experience in an informal and comfortable environment overlooking the 18th hole of the Stapleford Park Championship golf course. David Ellams, Stapleford Park’s Head Chef, has created a very appealing menu which consists of cooked breakfast, homemade soups, sandwiches, salads, noodle and pasta dishes as well as weekly chef’s specials. There were seven of us so we sampled a broad range – from Spaghetti Bolognese and Lasagne with garlic bread for the kids (half portions, which were huge and half price and devoured) to an enormous chicken, bacon and avocado Ciabatta with fries and salad (£7.50) for Pete, a succulent 8oz homemade beef burger, tomatoes, toasted bun, chips (£8.50) for James (“You don’t get this quality in New York”), Singapore egg noodles (£12) for Michelle (“Nice and spicy”) and a light and divine salad, specially made for me (well an extended starter), - Goat’s cheese roulade, celeriac salad, black pepper oil. Dessert for those who can afford the calories – half size ice creams with choky sauce and a chocolate brownie with vanilla ice cream (£5) big enough to feed the table. We were impressed. The value for money was incredible. • For more information and to view the Pavilion menu visit www.staplefordpark.com/dining/ pavilion-dining or to reserve a table call Tel: 01572 787044. The Pavilion Menu is available from 12.00 - 17.00 daily. Breakfast is available from 08.00 - 12.00 and Ciabattas are available from 10.00 onwards.

The Pheasant at Keyston Fiona Cumberpatch travelled a little further afield to re-visit an old favourite

M

y spirits rose as soon as I set eyes on the menu at this pretty village pub. It was an unseasonably cold and damp summer’s day, the computer was on the blink, the car was in the garage and I needed cheering up. Contemplating dishes such as char-grilled asparagus with wild garlic, lemon and chive butter sauce, grilled sardines with salsa verde, potato and onion salad, jersey royals, and elderflower pannacotta with blueberry compote was an instant pick me up. My colleague Bridget and I sipped drinks in the beamed bar while we made our choices. The Pheasant has a clubby interior, with sporting prints on the walls, a padded leather bar and a mix of masculine coloured carpet and flagstones on the floor. Huge jars of nuts and home made crisps stand on the bar. Under new ownership since January, The Pheasant now once again belongs to the Hoskins family, who also run the acclaimed Old Bridge at Huntingdon. We ate in the Old Bar, but if the day had been

sunnier, we could have gone into the lighter Garden Room or, indeed, the pretty garden itself. There is also the Long Room, which seats 16, for large parties. For my starter, I chose asparagus soup with crème fraiche and lemon oil (£5.95). Bridget had the home cured bresaola with beetroot, fennel and horseradish (£7.95). Both were absolutely superb. My soup was velvety and savoury and needed just a single grind of salt and pepper to make the seasoning perfect. Bridget’s salad looked like a work of art, and she raved about the delicate flavours, with paper thin slices of bresaola and slivers of radish, and a punchy horseradish cream. The dishes came with complementary home made bread and unsalted butter. Service was attentive but not intrusive. For our mains, Bridget chose fish and chips (£13.95): in this case, fillet of Pollock with chunky chips, smashed broad beans and home made tartare sauce. Her fish was meaty and shiny-fresh, and she said she could have eaten a plateful of the beans on their own, they were so delicious. I picked Potted Portland crab with pickled cucumber and fennel salad (£8.95), and

a side of Jersey Royals with butter and parsley. The crab came in a little glass jar and was chunky, rich and savoury. I particularly enjoyed the pickled cucumber, thinly pared with a sweet, tangy taste that cut through the richness of the crab. As we were driving, we were unable to take advantage of The Pheasant’s extensive and noteworthy wine list. Proprieter John Hoskins is a Master of Wine, and sister establishment, The Old Bridge at Huntingdon, has twice won the AA award for best wine list in the UK. There is no formal sommelier at The Pheasant, but the team, headed by Chef Patron Simon Cadge and his partner Gerda, are very well informed, and customers are encouraged to ask if they need any advice. We couldn’t leave without pudding. I rounded off my meal with another summer classic: Eton Mess, while Bridget chose apricot sorbet. My dessert was excellent: sweet strawberries, nuggets of home made meringue and lashings of thick cream. Chef Patron Simon Cadge popped out to see us, and explained that “seasonal food is key.” The menu changes regularly, and he is keen to offer “something for everyone. We do a casual offering, as well as a foodie menu.” We certainly liked the flexibility of the food: sandwiches are on offer, or if you want to order two starters, that is fine, too. We came out of the pub replete and very impressed. My spirits were fully restored, it’s amazing what a really good lunch can do! • The Pheasant, Keyston, Huntingdon, Cambs PE28 ORE. Stamford Garden Centre wins Great Taste awards A number of products produced by Stamford Garden Centre will be displaying the coveted Great Taste 2012 logo after being recognised by a panel of 350 of the nation’s most discerning food experts

T

o achieve Gold in Great Taste is a significant achievement for any food or drink producer and results are eagerly awaited. The scheme, run by the Guild of Fine Food, has been described as the epicurean equivalent of the Booker Prize and in 2012 a total of 8,807 different food and drink products were entered. The Garden Farm Shop, which is a part of the family run business Stamford Garden Centre, has won the highest accolade for it traditional Haslet (Gold Award 3 stars). Their butchers focus on producing the finest products from the best quality, locally sourced ingredients. They also won a Gold 2 star award for their Lincolnshire sausages and a Gold 1 star award for their Speciality Beef & cracked black pepper. “This the 2nd year we have entered and the fifth time we have won a gold award for our products, and we were delighted that our Haslet has won the highest marks within such a competitive field,” said James Lamb, the owner. “This provides recognition for the hard word and skill of our butchers and also the quality of our local farm suppliers. It shows that a small farming family business can compete with the big names on quality and taste.”

So that you can enjoy these award-winning products, Head Chef Andrew West of The Garden Kitchen has devised some recipes that show the products off to the best.

Haslet recipe Toad in the Hole (serves 4) • 8 X Gold 3 star Award Winning Lincolnshire sausages • 1 cup of flour • 1 cup of eggs (whole) • 1 cup of milk • Salt & pepper • Chopped fresh sage • Sunflower oil Preheat oven to 200C/ Gas 6 Heat frying pan, add the sausages and gently brown all over. Mix the flour, eggs and milk into a smooth batter. Add the chopped sage, season with salt & pepper. In a large dish add a splash of sunflower oil, heat in the oven for 5 minutes. Add the sausages, pour in the batter and place in the oven for 25-30 minutes until the batter has risen and is well coloured. Serve with mash, seasonal vegetables and a nice rich onion gravy.

Use Haslet as part of an Autumn ploughman’s, with warmed pork pie, crusty bread, pickles, apples and chutney Pear & Tomato Chutney to go with Haslet ploughman’s • 6 x pears, quartered, covered and chopped into 1 inch cubes • 6 x vine tomatoes, quartered and roughly chopped • 1 x white onion, peeled and diced • 100ml white wine vinegar • 100g sugar • 1 x each of cinnamon stick, star anise & a few black peppercorns Using a heavy based pan, tie in the cinnamon, star anise & black peppercorns in a piece of muslin cloth, add all the ingredients to the pan and give it a good stir. Place over a medium heat. Cook for 1-2 hours, the tomatoes will break down and the chutney should begin to become sticky. Remove the muslin, jar, cool and store.

Beef & Cracked Black Pepper Cassoulet (serves 4) • 1 large onion, diced • 2 sticks of celery, peeled and diced • 2 cloves of garlic, crushed • 2 large carrots, peeled and diced • 8 award winning Beef & Cracked Black Pepper sausages • 1 tin of chopped tomatoes • 2 glasses of red wine • 1 chicken stock cube made with hot water to a pint • 1tbsp chopped fresh thyme, rosemary, parsley • 1 tin cannellini beans Pre heat oven to 180c / Gas 5 In a heavy based casserole dish heat a little olive oil. Fry the onion, celery, garlic & carrots gently for 5-10 mins over a gentle heat until softened. Add the tomatoes, wine and stock, bring to the boil and simmer whilst cooking the sausages in a separate pan until coloured all over but not fully cooked. Slice sausages into chunks, add the herbs and beans to the casserole. Place in the oven for at least an hour to thicken the sauce and let the flavours develop. Serve with crusty bread and crisp salad. Stamford Garden Centre, Casterton Rd, Stamford, PE9 4BB Tel: 01780 765656 www.stamfordgardencentre.co.uk STAMFORD LIVING SEPTEMBER 2012

SNACK ATTACK

Fruit to Suit healthy snacks are quickly becoming a delicious and nutritious choice at break times in schools across the region. Sarah Lyon met with Ann Knott to find out how educating school children about healthy food choices, combined with an opportunity to run and create their own business, is having a positive impact Ann Knott with daughters Ciara and Katie

F

ruit to Suit is changing children’s perceptions about what break time snacks can be. The idea began to take shape in 2005 when teacher Terrie Johnson from the Wirral (single mum of two with a passion for healthy eating) began to trial healthy snacks at break time in the inner city school she was teaching in. With strict Government regulations and guidelines (not allowing added sugar and salt in snack food) Terrie saw an opportunity, and seven years later she and her team of franchisees are on track to transform school Tuck Shops across the country. Ann Knott, based in Stamford, has established a Fruit to Suit franchise business in our area. Two Stamford schools, Malcolm Sargent Primary School and St Gilbert’s C of E Primary School, are stocking the fruit to Suit range of healthy snacks and drinks in their tuck shops. “For me Fruit to Suit ticks all the boxes,” says Ann. “It involves promoting healthy eating, which as a mum is something I really care about.” Ann’s professional background is in marketing and PR in the food sector, initially in London and then in Peterborough. She has lived in Stamford for 20 years. For Ann, the most exciting aspect of the Fruit

to Suit Tuck Shop Challenge and Company Trading is it provides a fun and exciting enterprise opportunity for children. The Tuck Shop Manager program trains approximately 22 children to set up and run a sustainable healthy tuck shop business. The pupils apply and are interviewed for tuck shop managerial roles. The elected managers are trained to set up and run the tuck shop independently. They develop skills in project management, marketing and selling a product, managing resources and communication. “The skills are transferable,” says Ann. “I use my business skills to help the students learn how to set up and run their own business. This in turn helps to develop important life skills that include problem solving, self-motivation, negotiation skills and team work while using their own initiative.” “The best bit for me is the chance to do all this with children in schools. The Fruit to Suit program provides a fantastic real life learning opportunity for the children. Through it they get to experience what it feels like to set up and run their very own business. It is such fun to work with them, it really is a privilege,” enthuses Ann. As well as encouraging important life skills, the training programmes provide opportunities

for children to apply their maths and literacy skills. A simple spread sheet will help them track sales and there are numerous advertising opportunities for them to demonstrate literacy and creative skills. “Being a social enterprise business means that it is recognised for doing good things in the community which is important to me too,” says Ann. Ann goes onto explain, “When I asked one group at St Thomas More School in Peterborough to think about their profits and where they would go, they immediately replied that they would be sharing profits with St Mary’s Meals, a nominated charity that the school has been working with for years in Africa. “It is lovely to see the students take on the challenge and rise to the opportunity. I can see that the scheme is a confidence booster for children because it supports them to take on responsibility. “I feel that our Tuck Shop kids may well go on to have the confidence to be young entrepreneurs in the future.” Fruit to Suit supplies healthy, tasty snacks and drinks for staff rooms, nurseries, sports centres and offices too. SEAN’S KITCHEN CONFIDENTIAL Olympic fuel

It was hard not to be inspired by the London Olympics – there were some amazing performances. As a chef, I always wonder what the medal winners had for breakfast A bit of web research revealed that Michael Phelps gets through 12,000 calories a day, while Jamaican sprinter Yohan Blake eats 16 bananas every 24 hours. Outstanding eating! If you’ve been inspired to start training for Rio 2016, it’s important you eat well, and that includes the most important meal of the day – breakfast. At The Red Lion at Stathern, Leicestershire – sister pub The Olive Branch – we’ve been serving a mini Olympic Breakfast Salad. It contains all the components of a full English but in smaller size: Lincolnshire sausage from David Cox, pan-seared black pudding from Grasmere Farm, roasted organic chesnut mushrooms deglazed with Worcestershire sauce, a pan-fried quail’s egg on sourdough from Hambleton Bakery, and a slice of crispy smoked bacon for extra texture. These are served with homemade fruity brown sauce, and garnished with salad leaves to make it a little lighter – we use wild rocket, frisée (French curly endive), little gem and radicchio. Bradley Wiggins swears by it!

Red Lion Olympic Breakfast Salad - Serves 6 • 1 Lincolnshire sausage – cooked in frying pan for seven minutes until golden brown • 1 Grasmere Farm black pudding – sliced into six pieces, then pan-seared in frying pan for one minute each side • 3 thin rashers of smoked bacon, grilled until crispy (around four minutes) • 6 cherry vine tomatoes, roasted in a hot oven for two minutes, then glazed with balsamic vinegar • 6 chestnut mushrooms – roasted in a pan with a knob of butter until golden brown, then deglazed with a splash of Worcester sauce • 6 quail eggs – fried in a non stick pan for 1 minute • 6 thin slices of fried sour dough bread (Hambleton Bakery) • 1 handful of mixed washed salad leaves (lightly dressed with rapeseed oil and lemon juice) JOIN GREAT FOOD CLUB

Fruity brown sauce

• 4 plum tomatoes, roughly chopped • 3 Braeburn apples, peeled, cored and roughly chopped • 1 white onion, peeled and roughly chopped • 5 Victoria plums, stoned and roughly chopped • 200g soft dark brown sugar • 50g malt extract (or you can use treacle) • 200ml Worcester sauce • 200ml white wine vinegar • 1 small pinch cayenne pepper 1. Place all prepared ingredients into a large saucepan and bring to the boil. 2. Turn down to a gentle simmer and cook slowly until it resembles a chutney. 3. Remove from heat and allow to cool slightly, before blending to a smooth sauce like consistency 4. Place into sterilised jars or bottles and seal. 5. Keep refrigerated. It will last up to one month.

A word about Lincolnshire sausages

One of the ingredients of our Olympic Breakfast Salad – and in our Toad in the Hole pictured above – is the Lincolnshire sausage. In June the Government rejected a campaign to protect Lincolnshire sausages in the same way Melton Mowbray Pork Pies are protected. As a result, it remains the case that virtually any sausage, made anywhere, can be labelled a Lincolnshire Sausage. At The Olive Branch and Red Lion we buy our bangers from either Grasmere Farm in Market Deeping, or family butcher David Cox of Stathern. Both make Lincs sausages in the traditional way, using sage, at least 70% pork – coarsely ground to produce an open texture – plus breadcrumbs and seasoning, all wrapped up in natural casings.

Did you know?

Lincolnshire sausages have their own free festival, which this year takes place in the grounds of Lincoln Castle and Castle Square on Saturday, October 27, 10am to 4pm. For more information, see www.tastesoflincolnshire.com

MOT OR ING

New Range Rover: leaner and meaner Land Rover has unveiled the latest incarnation of its best-selling luxury 4x4 – and it’s the best so far, says Dave Phillips

W

hen Land Rover launched the original Range Rover back in June 1970, the British company little realised what a monster it had unleashed on the world. The original model was aimed at the British farmer and came with vinyl seats, hose-down interiors and rubber mats. But its popularity extended beyond mere class and geographical boundaries: the world couldn’t get enough of the new luxury 4x4 and, as the years passed, the Range Rover got more and more luxurious. Soon the rubber mats were replaced by plush carpet and the vinyl seats with leather. By the time the third-generation Range Rover was launched in 2002, each electronically-controlled seat contained more miles of wiring than the original vehicle had in 1970. Today it is sold in over 100 countries worldwide. It is particularly popular in China, which is now the Range Rover’s second-biggest market – after the UK, of course. Four decades on, we love the luxurious Range Rover as much as ever. But all that luxury came at a cost. The Range Rover grew ever bigger and heavier. The current model weighs in at over 3,000 kg. And big, heavy cars tend to be thirsty and produce too much CO2. Could the Range Rover’s days be numbered in these austere times? Not a bit of it! Land Rover’s engineers and designers have reinvented the brand and have just unveiled the fourth-generation Range Rover, which is much leaner and meaner than

48

any of its illustrious predecessors. The all-new model has been developed from the ground up, capturing the innovative spirit and iconic design of the original model which changed the world of motoring when it was launched 42 years ago. It boasts a revolutionary lightweight all-aluminium monocoque body structure that is 39 per cent lighter than the steel body in the outgoing model – 420 kg lighter, in fact. The lightweight aluminium platform has delivered significant enhancements in performance and agility, along with a transformation in fuel economy and CO2 emissions. The stiff aluminium chassis architecture and four-corner air suspension make the Range Rover’s legendary ride qualities better than ever, on and off-road. For although the majority of Range Rovers won’t see too much action off the beaten track, the capability is there if you want it. That gleaming 4x4 standing on your drive could transport you across deserts, through jungles and up mountains, if you felt so inclined. All Land Rovers are designed to be best in class off-road, and this is no exception. The new model has been subjected to Land Rover’s punishing test and development regime, with a fleet of development vehicles covering millions of miles over 18 months of arduous tests in more than 20 countries with extremes of climate and road surfaces. Within the cabin, the all-new Range Rover

provides occupants with a sensation of serene isolation, meeting the highest luxury car standards for refinement. The optimised body structure and acoustic lamination of the windscreen and side door glass have significantly reduced noise levels. The sumptuous interior enjoys a very contemporary treatment, with clean, elegant surfaces flawlessly presented using the finest leathers and veneers. With over 118mm more legroom than its predecessor, the new model ensures that rear passengers benefit from increased space and comfort. To deliver the model’s characteristic effortless performance, customers have the choice of a refined supercharged V8 petrol engine, TDV6 and SDV8 diesel engines combining responsive performance with outstanding CO2 emissions. The all-new Range Rover has been engineered with the latest developments in vehicle technologies, from interior luxury features such as exclusive Meridian surround sound music systems and power upper and lower tailgates, to advanced chassis and driver assistance technologies. Land Rover has confirmed that the new Range Rover will be officially launched at the Paris Motor Show, which opens its doors on September 29. Franchise dealers will be taking orders this month, with deliveries scheduled to start from early 2013. • For more information about the allnew Range Rover – including pricing and specification – visit Marshall Land Rover at Mallory Road, Boongate, Peterborough PE1 5AU. Open Evenings As a new academic year begins, many parents and pupils start thinking about the next step. Alysia Anderson studies the local options for secondary education

O

ne of the biggest decisions parents and children make is their choice of secondary school. Which one will best allow your child to flourish, both in and out of the classroom? If possible, try to visit schools in term time when you can see pupils and staff in action; either by attending an open day, for which you may need to book, or by arranging a private tour. Arthur Mellows Village College Helpston Road, Glinton PE6 7JX Tel: 01733 252235; www.arthurmellows.peterborough.sch.uk In September 2010 this co-ed comprehensive became an academy, freeing it from direct government control. The college holds Specialist Status in Technology and gained an Outstanding report from Ofsted. A range of academic and vocational courses is offered and standards are significantly above the national average. Recent additions to the campus include a purpose-built science block, new ICT and media classrooms, a music technology suite, an auditorium and a sixth-form coffee lounge and quiet study area. Music, performing arts and sports are encouraged and many students take part in Duke of Edinburgh’s Awards. The open evening is on 3 October at 6.30pm, with a separate sixth form evening on 14 November. Bourne Grammar School South Road, Bourne PE10 9JE Tel: 01778 422288; www.bournegrammar.lincs.sch.uk Another graduate to academy status, this popular co-ed grammar school recently won a £762,000 grant to allow it to expand facilities and cater for a greater number of pupils. It currently has almost a thousand students, selected using Lincolnshire 11+ exam results from the top quarter of students in and around Bourne. The expansion brings four new classrooms, an enlarged English and science suite and a new systems and control (part of design and technology) block. The Year 7 intake will increase to six forms, welcoming an extra 150 children over five years and growing the sixth form considerably. Sixth-formers study in a purpose-built Independent Learning Centre and the school as a whole is active in the fields of sports, music and the arts. The sixth form open evening is on 15 November at 6.30pm. For other ages, information evenings are held in June.

There are around 1,150 pupils, 340 of them in the sixth form, for which there is a minimum qualification requirement for entry. Last year a 60-place Junior Department opened for Years 3 to 6, principally to educate young choristers. King’s enjoys good academic results and encourages take-up of a wide range of extra-curricular activities including sport and, in particular, music. The open evening for Year 7 entry is on 19 September at 7pm, and for sixth form on 7 November at 6.45pm. Oakham School Tel: 01572 758758; www.oakham.rutland.sch.uk An independent school with excellent facilities, including a £2 million design and technology centre, Oakham offers the choice of day attendance, part or full boarding. Pupils are accepted from the age of 10. At sixth form the school offers the choice of AS/A2 levels or the International Baccalaureate. The latter provides a wider range of subject study, ideal for students who prefer not to specialise so early. Various scholarships are available as well as some bursaries. Reflecting the three divisions of the school, open mornings including lunch are held from 9.30am to 1.30pm on Saturdays as follows: sixth form: 8 September; Lower School ‘Jerwoods’ for 10-12+ entry: 15 September or 6 October; Middle School for 13+ entry: 29 September. Call to book a place. Oundle School Great Hall, New St, Oundle PE8 4GH Tel: 01832 277122; www.oundleschool.org.uk This historic co-ed independent school dominates the small town of Oundle. Pupils enter at 11+, 13+ or in the sixth form and all applicants are required to sit an entrance exam. Various scholarships and bursaries are available. The school enjoys excellent academic results and encourages a broad spectrum of creative, cultural and sporting activities, including rowing on the River Nene. Oundle is one of England’s three largest boarding schools, although it also welcomes day pupils. Open days take place each quarter, with the next one on 15 September; attendance by arrangement only. Stamford School, St Paul’s St, Stamford PE9 2BQ Tel: 01780 750300; www.ses.lincs.sch.uk The Stamford Endowed Schools are a trio of independent schools with a ‘diamond’ structure. The co-ed Junior School leads to single-sex education at Stamford School (boys) and High School (girls) from 11-16 then, at sixth form, the schools become co-ed again. Junior pupils automatically gain a secondary place; otherwise entrance exams are held in January. A range of scholarships and means-tested bursaries are offered for entry at any point from Year 7 to 13 at both schools. Stamford School educates around 700 boys, a small proportion of them boarders, with high sporting and academic achievements. This year a brand-new pool and sports centre opened, for use by all three schools, and funds are being raised to transform the old gymnasium into a performing arts centre. Numerous extra-curricular activities include one of the UK’s largest Combined Cadet Force divisions. The open day is from 10am-3pm on 6 October.

Stamford High School High St St Martin’s, Stamford PE9 2LL Tel: 01780 484200; www.ses.lincs.sch.uk Founded in 1877, the High School shows excellent academic results and, like the other schools, offers day or weekly boarding. Girls are involved in more than 80 extra-curricular activities, including drama, music, CCF and Duke of Edinburgh’s Awards. Specialist rooms at the school include a dedicated drama studio for the teaching of performing arts, a technology workshop and facilities for modern languages and ICT. The open day is on 6 October between 10am and 3pm. Stamford Queen Eleanor School Green Lane, Stamford PE9 1HE Tel: 01780 751011; www. queeneleanor.org.uk Head Wendy Hamilton has worked diligently over the last three years to bring about numerous improvements at this co-ed comprehensive. The school now offers accelerated learning, allowing higher-achieving students to take GCSEs a year early, and a Junior Baccalaureate curriculum leading to the English Baccalaureate. It also works with local primary schools to offer Saturday classes for promising Year 5 and 6 pupils. Children enjoy a wide range of after-school activities, from debating and drama to engineering and gardening. Eco-funding for solar panels and a wind turbine at the school were part of an investment programme that also brought improved tennis courts, additional laptops and refurbished food technology and drama rooms. Parents of primary children in Years 4, 5 and 6 can attend open mornings at 9.30am on 24, 25 and 26 September or an open evening at 6pm on 26 September.

The Pony Club at Burghley We have celebrated the success of our equestrian team at the Olympic Games and this month it is the Burghley Horse Trials, but it’s often as members of the Pony Club that riders learn their horsemanship. Jean Orpin and Sue Lee are grateful to Robbie Reed for describing our local branch activities

T

he Pony Club is a charitable organisation that draws members from all walks of life, children learn the basic skills in riding and looking after their ponies and lasting friendships are forged. Everyone is encouraged to meet their personal goals whatever they may be. The Burghley Pony Club is very fortunate to have use of such a beautiful setting for its activities which run alongside all the other charitable events which are held in the Park.

Burghley Park Founded in 1958 by David Cecil the 6th Marquis of Exeter, the Burghley Branch has maintained close links with the family with his grand-daughter, Miranda Rock, being its current President. Like most branches, it started life as an offshoot of the local hunt. When the Burghley Hunt disbanded, the branch maintained good links with other local packs. Thanks to the generosity of the Burghley House Preservation Trust, the branch holds a number of events in the Park throughout the year. These events are all run by volunteers, with members enjoying a variety of activities from rallies and mounted games to the week long summer camps. In the early years the Summer Camp was held alongside the golf course with a small cross country course running through the trees near the road. Loose ponies frequently caused havoc on the greens and fairways much to the annoyance of local golfers! Nowadays the majority of Branch activities are held in the fields near the Pilsgate Lodge entrance and are regularly watched and enjoyed by the public visiting the House and gardens.

park attendants with their neat rows of horseboxes to the fence judges, scorers, stewards and tack checkers and Pony Club members acting as the Show Jumping Arena Party. Without these helpers and the sponsorship of local companies the event would not have been such a success. The main sponsors, CWG Ltd of Uffington Road, provided wonderful prizes for each section which were greatly appreciated by the competitors. Not to be overlooked winning horses were presented with a bale of haylage supplied by Top Crop Haylage of Louth

Successes This year has been a very successful one for the Branch with teams being well placed in Area competitions. Members have qualified for the Pony Club Championships in the disciplines of Dressage, Show Jumping, Mounted Games and Eventing (Horse Trials). Last year the show jumping team created a nail-biting finish to the Pony Club Show Jumping competition at Burghley Horse Trials finishing is 2nd place – could they go one better this year?

‘Mini Burghley’ 2012 This year the Branch hosted the Area 6 Horse Trials – a qualifying competition for the Pony Club Championships. This event was a ‘Mini Burghley’ with competitors competing in dressage, cross country and show jumping. The cross country course was designed and built by Philip and Guy Herbert. Philip is probably better known for his role as Clerk to the Course at Burghley Horse Trials and his involvement in course building started back in the 1980s. The show jumping phase took place on the superb all-weather arena which was purpose built as a warm up arena for the main Horse Trials. They are indebted to Burghley Horse Trials for its use. In a summer of continuous rain they were lucky to pick a dry weekend for the event and in spite of torrential rain on Friday the limestone parkland drained quickly to provide excellent footing on the cross country course. Over the weekend around 350 riders took part in the event coming from as far afield as Yorkshire, Derbyshire and Oxfordshire. A lively commentary kept spectators well informed and the event, along with its small area of trade stands drew great interest from members of the public walking through the Park. The whole event was run by an army of volunteers, from the car STAMFORD Living SEPTEMBER 2012

Stamford Poet Laureate: Darren Rawnsley Rather fittingly for a poet laureate charged with the mission of bringing poetry within the grasp of everyday folk Darren Rawnsley (aka Dazza Coolman) is an ordinary man, with an extraordinary passion for writing poetry reports Harjit Gammon

H

e lives inconspicuously, humbly even, in an unremarkable house like many others in Stamford without pretension or affectation and teaches at a specialist school for young boys with anger management issues. So far so ordinary. What you wouldn’t guess about him in a chance encounter is that he loves writing poetry. In April this year however he became Stamford’s first poet laureate, following in the footsteps of poet laureates in Lincolnshire and Peterborough. He was selected from a group of six finalists, by a panel comprising the Mayor of Stamford, the poet laureate of Lincolnshire and a representative of Book a Poet. It soon becomes apparent when one meets him, that Darren is likeable, unselfconscious and generously community minded. He runs a number of children’s theatre groups in the town and is Youth and Schools representative for the British Legion in Stamford. But what of his poetry you ask? His winning entry, The Runner, can be seen on the Arts Centre website. A piece, I suspect like much of Darren’s poetry best appreciated when seen and heard. He enthuses about a Bradford poet, David Green, who has been the key influence for his own current style of performance poetry. The titles of Green’s works; ‘A Spanner in Your Works’ and ‘A Bag of All Sorts’ provide something of a clue. Darren has a refreshing approach, combining ‘theatrical ‘performance rather than merely recital with poetry. He belongs instinctively, it seems to me, to a school of thought that holds that the variety of ways in which poems can be read and thereby enjoyed stretch beyond conventional analysis and presentation. Indeed the very things which are frequently argued to account for inhibiting rather than encouraging interest in the medium. To date, in his new role, he has been commissioned to write a poem for the Town Mayor (‘I got the job’), for Armed Forces Week, and the passing of the Olympic torch through the town in July. He has performed a work about the dungeons in situ at a Town Hall Open Day, holds a monthly poetry session, ‘A Pint of Poetry’ in the Cellar Bar adjoining the Arts Centre and a Poetry Forum/Clinic once a month at the Arts Centre. An unlikely candidate some might say for the post, Darren spent 22 years in the RAF (Supply & Logistics) having left school without any qualifications. But what intrigues me is the trigger and source of his fondness for and fascination with poetry. So I ask him. Casting back to his childhood, he recounts the experience of being adopted when his

mother remarried. “I didn’t have a good time, so I started writing. Just odd words, on an Etch-a-Sketch, to begin with. I liked writing them and wiping them clean. Later, when I was sent out to play, I used to go and lie in the buttercup fields near our house and write words on scraps of paper”. Around the age of 16 he got into listening to Leonard Cohen and Bob Dylan’s songs and poetry, before taking the next step to writing his own. About this time he also joined Bradford Youth Players, who were to have a profound influence on him. “I threw myself into it. They became my new family, and they all seemed to write poems, stories and play music”. A school days’ interest in English, led to him beginning to write stories, and in the

1970s his first poem, ‘Nightclub Blues’, inspired by his own experience on a ‘grab a granny night’ outing. He progressed from this to war poems inspired by the First World War and love poems to his wife of 26 years, Sharon. “Nowadays I’m inspired to write about all sorts.” He reflects, “It’s been quite a journey for me, from where I was at 15/16 to where I am now at 52. I don’t think how well I’ve done, I think about the journey. Some of them (children) don’t have a journey nowadays”. • Inspired?
