welcome to BALLARAT
The name “Ballaarat” is derived from the Wathaurung Aboriginal name for the area, balla arat, meaning “resting place”. Built on fortunes made from the 1850s gold rush, Ballarat is known for its rich history, culture and beautifully preserved Victorian era architecture.
Ballarat is still yielding treasure today, in the form of quirky shops, hidden bars and worldclass cafés and restaurants... not to mention our lively music, art and performance scene.
Best of Ballarat has been created to help visitors and locals make the most of what Ballarat has to offer... so start exploring!!

PICASSO: THE VOLLARD SUITE
Pablo Picasso's Vollard Suite is a set of 100 etchings, engravings and aquatints created by the artist in the 1930s and named after Ambroise Vollard, his sometime art dealer and publisher. It contains several themes that were close to Picasso's heart – principally the classically derived subjects of the Minotaur (the man–beast) and Pygmalion (the artist obsessed with his model). The Art Gallery of Ballarat is the only Victorian venue for this National Gallery of Australia touring exhibition. Picasso once said of the role of an artist, 'it's not what the artist does that counts, but what he is'. He identified himself, along with his own sense of artistic creativity and sexuality, with the mythical figure of the Minotaur. Nowhere is the link between the artist and 'the untamable beast', to use Picasso's words, more apparent than in the Vollard Suite. The major emphasis in the prints was the transformation of the artist into his alter-ego, the Minotaur.

LOUISEANN KING: SOLIS
Louiseann King is a maker and a collector of time and place; her practice is one where she works with nuance, subtlety, the liminal, the forgotten and the lost. A woman artist working in bronze in a field dominated by men, with a practice which is inherently feminine and ‘other’. In her practice, bronze is both inherently monumental and heroic, and also deeply seductive and sensual in its potential to enable transformation.

ELIZA-JANE GILCHRIST: STRANGE GARDEN
Eliza-Jane Gilchrist creates sculptural installations out of cardboard. Gilchrist imagines that cardboard retains a cellular memory of being a plant which wants to reform itself into organic shapes. She draws inspiration from shapes and patterns found in the natural world, to highlight the strangeness of the microscopic and minute. By working with packaging material, Gilchrist invites a reappraisal of the value of the discarded and re-invests the mundane with significance.

HAPPENINGS HAPPENINGS
Commissioned by the Ballarat International Foto Biennale, Melbourne-based interdisciplinary artist Robbie Rowlands — best known for his sculptural interventions into pre-demolition buildings — has commenced an artist residency at the historically significant former Union Bank on Lydiard Street. His work there will result in a sculptural site intervention intricately woven from the building’s internal walls and remnant furnishings. The building will soon transition into its new life as the National Centre For Photography, Australia’s only regional gallery dedicated exclusively to photography. We caught up with Robbie on site to find out more.
What were your initial impressions of the building?
I try not to do too much research before I get to a site. Nothing beats walking into a site for the first time and just letting your peripheral vision and all your awareness open everything up. Outside presents very different to inside, so you go 'yeah wow!' then you get inside and go 'whoa … '. It’s like an inverted Tardis, it’s huge outside and you come inside and it has pockets of rooms and stairways that go off to wherever … I was just getting lost, I had no idea which way I was facing. It’s such a strange layout. Because it's not a demolition situation, it’s a part demolition/renovation, there are limitations here and I really like that. I like that there are heritage limitations, there are practical limitations because the gallery needs to retain certain features, so everything was starting to be brought down to some basics, but then it all opens up again.
Talk us through your creative process. You visit a site for the first time, what are the next steps? Sitting in rooms, leaning against walls, spending time looking at light, how light enters a room, picking up on all those beautiful moments of the day where the light changes. And not trying to jump too quickly into 'OK, I can do this', you know, sculpturally. Those things enter your mind pretty quick but you have to put them at bay and say 'no, just relax' and you won’t lose those ideas, they come back. Allow all the subtleties to come through. If I get down to that layer, they're the things I bring to the fore, then when people come to experience the exhibition they start to pick up on those energies too. So, really just spending time, getting the camera out. The first day I got here I went into one of the two walk-in safes. I pulled the drawers out and was documenting inside the space ... they look like rooms! These cavernous spaces, and it is cavernous in the sense of history. The amount of wealth that has passed through those drawers. It's a space that’s never really looked at because it's a utilitarian set up that's just there to put something into and close off, it's not celebrated as a space that should be commemorated for its support.
There’s a lot of symbolism in a building like this, a gold rush bank, isn’t there?
If I was to look at a socio-political context which started to enter my thinking, pre-determining the space, it was thinking about the history and politics of gold. The reality that Ballarat internationally was just so wealthy, it’s led me to think about how much wealth was generated and how it was dispersed evenly or unevenly. Whilst only a portion of it was fed through this place, it's implicated in that conversation. It’s got a grand exterior — the facade loves to tell the story — but you get inside and it's almost symbolic. You think 'yeah, there’s not a lot left behind the scenes is there?' It’s all just been taken. The safe’s probably the bling of the whole site. The rest is veneer, some paint and maybe some ornate features. It’s not hard to go down that track and start to question the way we
memorialise that whole period. How that feeds into the work and what I do with the gestures, I suppose they’re not literal. The works I do don’t just suddenly say 'hey, you’re talking about this'. But the thing of carving into spaces, and pushing surfaces forwards or backwards, and dropping things to floors and realising gravity — you start to open up history. And in just doing that action, you're positioning people in a situation where they are open to history. And so whatever way they think about it when they stand in that space and in front of that surface and it’s opened up in that way, and fairly visceral, history is something that comes into play and their perspective comes into play. So the context is delivered to them partly, being that it was a bank, but whether or not that’s the path they track down or it’s something else, that’s kind of open. You photograph your sculptural works and you’re very active on Instagram too. How important is photography to your practice and what is your history with photography? It’s pretty interesting to have the Ballarat International Foto Biennale welcome me to do a major work and … I’m a sculptor! I’m sure there’ll be people saying 'wait a second, he’s not a photographer!' I studied photography at TAFE way back and I really had trouble with it. I think I had trouble primarily from a context point of view, of 'what am I shooting? why am I shooting it?' I took up photography more when I was getting back into sculpture, making sure that I get the photo I need of the work that I've done, in multiple ways. It’s a memory of a situation and I suppose you’d call it a document, it’s seen as a document. People still say 'oh that’s a document of your artwork', and I go 'well no … wait a second, the artwork doesn’t exist anymore, that’s actually the work now'. So that’s another conversation. I had to transition out of analogue and digital was way too expensive, so I hired photographers to document early works. I found it really hard, particularly at sites because they could be there for an hour whereas I could be there for 12 hours and it just so happened to look way better every other hour. They knew their tools and they’d get a particular shot but I’d get a shot on a lesser quality camera and go 'whoa, it’s way better'. Luckily, digital caught up as far as price and also my art career caught up and I could buy the weapon I needed. There's probably a whole area of discussion about how my photos are photos as works, compared to the sculptural work. I see my photographs as both photographs and sculptural works.
This will be the inaugural exhibition at the National Centre For Photography — how do you feel about that?
There are two exhibitions really. There’s this one — the physical site intervention — then the photo exhibition during the Ballarat International Foto Biennale. The beauty of this site is that it has an energy already, 95% of the work for me is done. So the works I do don't have to be huge undertakings, they could be just small gestural works scaled to the room, picking up on certain things. At the moment I’m trying not to jump to the end but to enjoy the experience of the space and the time I have, and to find ways to draw out the creative potential of the site. I see the overall experience of this residency and exhibition as a kind of process of consecrating the space. Celebrating its transformation from the utilitarian space it was, to one that has a sacredness in terms of the art that will now be part of its future history.
Robbie Rowland's exhibition Incremental Loss runs from 23 Feb - 10 Mar at the National Centre For Photography, 4 Lydiard St South. Official opening on Sat 23 Feb 4pm.

Presented by Tash York
If you've ever been engaged at 19 or have parking tickets worth a house deposit, then, like Tash, you've probably not mastered 'Adulting' - the process of doing 'grown-up' things. Things like holding down a job, paying your bills on time, cooking dinner (that doesn't involve Maccas drivethru) and even doing your taxes. Known for her ballsy voice and witty repartee, award-winning cabaret artist Tash York (The Desperettes, After Hours Cabaret Club) explores why growing up is so hard! Tix: ballarattickets.com.au

28 FEB - 10 MAR JEKYLL & HYDE
Presented by Ballarat Lyric Theatre
The epic struggle between good and evil comes to life on stage in the musical phenomenon, Jekyll & Hyde. Based on the classic story by Robert Louis Stevenson and featuring a thrilling score of pop rock hits from Frank Wildhorn and Leslie Bricusse, Jekyll & Hyde has mesmerised audiences the world over. An evocative tale of two men - one, a doctor, passionate and romantic; the other, a terrifying madman - and two women: one, beautiful and trusting; the other, beautiful and trusting only herself. Both women in love with the same man and both unaware of his dark secret. A devoted man of science, Dr. Henry Jekyll is driven to find a chemical breakthrough that can solve some of mankind's most challenging medical dilemmas. Rebuffed by the powers that be, he decides to make himself the subject of his own experimental treatments, accidentally unleashing his inner demons along with the man that the world would come to know as Mr. Hyde. Suitable ages 16+.
