welcome to BALLARAT The name “Ballaarat” is derived from the Wadawurrung Aboriginal name for the area, balla arat, meaning “resting place”. Built on fortunes made from the 1850s gold rush, Ballarat is known for its rich history, culture and beautifully preserved Victorian era architecture. Ballarat is still yielding treasure today, in the form of quirky shops, hidden bars and world-class cafés and restaurants... not to mention our lively music, art and performance scene. Best of Ballarat has been created to help visitors and locals make the most of what Ballarat has to offer... so start exploring!!

DAVID NOONAN: STAGECRAFT
Stagecraft brings together silkscreen collages on fabric, tapestries and film. Noonan repurposes found photographic images from his extensive personal image archive to create images which are ambiguous, often with a focus on a solitary haunting figure. Black and white images appropriated from disparate sources including magazines relating to avant-garde theatre, film, design, architecture, dance & music are combined to create new compositions. PITCHA MAKIN FELLAS: JOIN THE CLUB
A playful series of trading-card-style portraits parodies the hypermasculine world of footy and criticises power imbalances that stem from the corporatisation of the game. They also remind us that the game we know today is believed to have originated from a traditional game played by the First Australians across Victoria – ‘Marngrook’ comes from the language of the Gunditjmara people and means ‘game ball’. The Pitcha Makin Fellas are an art collective based in Ballarat, Victoria. They are Koorie artists and writers whose ancestries hail from different language groups across Victoria. MADELEINE CRUISE & RUBY PILVEN: THE GOLDEN PANTOMIME For Ballarat-based artists Madeleine Cruise and Ruby Pilven, the process of creating artworks is as important as the artworks themselves. Pilven’s porcelain and stoneware ceramic pieces are based on historical and imagined forms that act as storytellers and props from domestic and natural spaces. Cruise’s interior paintings feature tableware and decorative objects that celebrate everyday rituals. The artists have also made a series of collaborative works with the common theme of still life as spectacle. Art Gallery of Ballarat 40 Lydiard St Nth

FEDERATION UNIVERSITY 150TH ANNIVERSARY TRAIL
The story of Federation University Australia goes back to the establishment of the School of Mines and Industries Ballarat in 1870. In 1880, the School started offering classes in engineering and mechanical drawing and in 1907 the art department was further enhanced by amalgamation with the Art Gallery’s art school and the art school in Ballarat East to form the Ballarat Technical Art School. DAVID FRAZER: ANOTHER NIGHT ON EARTH
Castlemaine artist David Frazer is renowned for his wood engravings and linocuts which explore the intricacies of the human condition. His finely detailed prints, marked by wit and careful observation of human interaction, capture moments of hope, loss and connection. This exhibition features prints made over the past two decades. Also included are new wood engravings made as a tribute to his distant relative, artist and printmaker Lionel Lindsay of the famous artistic Lindsay family of Creswick. Frazer’s prints are shown alongside a small selection of engravings by Lindsay from the Gallery collection. Art Gallery of Ballarat 40 Lydiard St Nth

TRENT PARKE: BALLARAT AVENUE OF HONOUR
Ballarat’s Avenue of Honour is the longest avenue of honour in Australia and one of the earliest known memorial avenues to have been planted in Victoria during the First World War. In 2014, photographer Trent Parke created a series of images of trees in the Avenue for the international exhibition The First World War, presented in Bruges, Belgium. In selecting and photographing particular trees for his series, he explored parallels between their natural forms and the fate of the individuals they commemorate, capturing these visual forms as an act of contemporary commemoration. Art Gallery of Ballarat 40 Lydiard St Nth

TRACEY MOFFATT & GARY HILLBERG: MONTAGES: THE FULL CUT, 1999–2015
This exhibition brings together for the first time the full suite of eight montage films by artist Tracey Moffatt and her long-time collaborator
BEST OF BALLARAT SUMMER 2021
Gary Hillberg, spanning 16 years of their collaborative practice. Montages is an ode to cinema and to the cinematic form, offering unprecedented insight into the stereotypes that populate our collective cultural imagination. In this suite of montages, the artists have spliced together thousands of clips from iconic Hollywood films, telemovies and arthouse cinema to create new narratives which tap into the humour and pathos of art, revolution, love and destruction. Art Gallery of Ballarat 40 Lydiard St Nth

GLENN MORGAN: GLOBAL WARMING
In 2011–12, Warrnambool artist Glenn Morgan was prompted by his awareness of the changing environment around him to create an enormous painting exploring themes of drought, fire, flood and severe weather events. The 10-metre work documents extremes in weather and natural disasters. The painting’s four adjoining panels are packed with stories, including exhausted CFA workers fighting fires and flooding rivers full of furniture, vehicles and debris. A DOG'S BREAKFAST
Works by Geoff Bonney. This exhibition consists of new and old work never shown before, it's a real Dog's Breakfast. Canines are a common theme in my work which I find hard to explain, I believe that I use the dog form as a metaphor for the human condition, it returns time and again cocking its leg and pissing over my thoughts and imagery.

KALEIDOSCOPE OF NATURE
As we slowly come through the Covid19 pandemic and after the 2019-20 bushfires, we can see that nature can rebound. Who would have thought that while the pandemic raged, the planet was able to take a cleaner breath than it has for many decades. What we witnessed may give us hope that we can live a more sustainable existence on planet Earth, that citizens have witnessed miracles of change and will want more.

MUTUAL REALITIES: FINDING COMMON GROUND IN UNCERTAIN TIMES
Eight local artists working in a range of media have been paired up and invited to collaborate remotely to create new work responding to the COVID pandemic. The pairs of artists are songwriter Stan Woodhouse (Skyscraper Stan) with illustrator Dillon Naylor; ceramicist Neville French with visual artist Rhonda Baum; hip-hop artist Floc (Sarah Barclay) with Yorta Yorta weaver/artist Donna Blackall; and poet Nathan Curnow with visual artist Kim Anderson. These four local creative collaborations remind us of our interconnectedness during this unprecedented time of distant social contact. Art Gallery of Ballarat 40 Lydiard St Nth
Next Gen 2021 Showcases the work of school students from Ballarat and the region, who have just completed VCE studies in Art, Studio Arts, Design & Technology, Visual Communication and Design & Media. Next Gen provides industry training to its participants, acts as an inspiring introduction to the art world for students and gives Gallery visitors insights into the world of young people today. While 2020 has been a very difficult one for students, they've continued to create. This year’s exhibition will include work that challenges the standard of previous years.
