It’s festival season, Little League season, trail season—whatever you call it
it’s summer in Vermont!
Some will say the best season. Certainly the most active. There is so much to see, do, try out, check out, chill out. We hope you take us along. Or better yet, we’ve shown you something new in this incredible state. We hope to see you in your travels throughout the state. And if we do, stop and say hi. The summer issue is looking at the Vermont Lake Monsters and baseball in Vermont. Sure, there’ve been a few changes because of the pandemic, but change is good. Kind of like the craft scene in Vermont. Local, fun, built on a long history. Say hello to breweries that are relatively new and may be new to you. Scotch Hill Brewery in Fair Haven and Whirligig Brewing in St. Johnsbury. Both are examples of doing what they love and going for it! Summer is the growing season. We ran across Common Roots in South Burlington and wanted to tell their story. Oh, and you’ve got to try their flatbreads on Friday nights. Wow! We’d say that things are getting back to normal, but what is normal these days? Be kind, and happy summer.

A New Wave of Excitement comes to Burlington
Vermont Lake Monsters 2022 season kicks off soon
W
ith summer just around the baseline, the Vermont Lake Monsters baseball team is looking full swing ahead to a festive and competitive season. Previously a Minor League team linked to the Oakland Athletics, the Monsters saw big changes in 2020. Rebounding off half-filled bleachers due to COVID-19 capacity measures and a restructuring among the Minor League that saw 42 teams dropped, the future of the Monsters was uncertain going into 2021. To save the franchise and keep the team homed in Burlington, founder of RockFence Capital and veteran baseball impresario Chris English purchased it. From there, the team joined the Futures Collegiate Baseball League
18
BREWVIEW Vermont 2022 Issue 2
(FCBL) and welcomed new head coach Pete Wilk. With just a month and a half to relaunch at the start of the ‘21 season, the team was short on players, time, and resources, yet bootstrapped their way through the ranks to solidify their talent in the FCBL with a championship win. “It was pretty magical,” says C. J. Knudsen, senior vice president of the Vermont Lake Monsters. “Everyone was really excited, and the community is ultimately the one that won.” HIGH-LEVEL PLAY The FCBL has eight teams, four in Massachusetts, two in Connecticut, and one each in New Hampshire and Vermont. Players come from around the country for a 64-game summer season
and are hosted by local families. With scouts following and watching the players, the FCBL offers the opportunity for highlevel play and the potential to get drafted to the big league. “There are a ton of scouts following and watching the players perform,” says C. J. “This season gets players used to playing pro baseball and gets the body acclimated to playing a lot of games.” The Vermont Lake Monsters 2022 team roster has close to 40 players from schools like Harvard, Columbia, and Pepperdine. The recruiting is done by head coach Wilk and Director of Baseball Operations Morgan Brown, who draw on their close relationships with schools across the country. “The most important thing we look for is the quality of people off the field first,”
says C. J. of the recruiting process. “If they can play baseball, that’s great.” C. J. noted they are having to turn players away as the caliber of play, the strength of the team, and the quality of summer life in Burlington become more widely recognized “The roster has been full and set since last September,” he says. “Word is out that Burlington is the place to be and play for the summer.” The players will take to the field with a home opener on May 27. The home field, Centennial Field, hosted its first baseball game in 1906 and today serves as the home field for the Vermont Lake Monsters. It seats up to 4,415 spectators and regularly fills up during the Monsters’ summer season with excited fans eager to support the young players. FIREWORKS AND HOT DOGS “The energy in the park is so great, you can almost taste it,” says C. J. “It’s magical, and we’re so lucky to be so supported.” Current renovations to the ballpark will see four new field box seats going in, and there is no shortage of promotions all summer long to get people out to enjoy a game. Three postgame firework shows are slated for 2022, along with three Hot Dog Hysteria nights, which feature 25 cent hot dogs and sell close to 10,000 dogs over the course of one game. On Wednesdays, kids eat free, and on Sundays, kids receive a free baseball to play catch on the field after the game. Tuesday hosts senior night with half off reserved tickets along with a free soft drink. “We really encourage people to come if they’ve never been or haven’t been in a while,” says C.J. “It’s a great, affordable night out.”

ENTERTAINMENT FOR EVERYONE With tickets starting at $6 for kids, $7 for seniors, $9 for adults, and $10 for reserve seats, the goal is to keep costs low so families can come and participate in the community baseball fun. And while many people come for the
20

baseball, they may stay for the top-notch food and beer. In addition to providing an entertaining, family-friendly night out, the administrative team for the Monsters puts focus on supporting local businesses with food and beverage purveyors
from around the area. “In Vermont, we like to think we have some of the best beer in the country,” says C. J. proudly. Giving tap presence to local breweries, beers available at the ballpark include Fiddlehead, 14th Star, Zero Gravity, Von
Trapp, Good Measure, and Citizen Cider to name a few. “People love having local beer that was maybe brewed just a mile from the ballpark, and we like to provide access to unbelievable beers,” C. J. says. “People visiting from out of state are always blown away by the selection.” And as many might agree, one of the perfect pairings for great beer is great pizza. To provide quality pizza to fans, the organization installed a custom-made fire oven for fresh, homemade-from-scratch pizzas available at every game. The other treasure of the Vermont Lake Monsters is the mascot himself—Champ, the legendary Lake Champlain monster who has been the mascot since 1994. Champ has received worldwide acclaim over the years and is just as popular as the players themselves. With high-quality food and beer, a legendary mascot, a new, exciting level of play, and events all summer long, a Vermont Lake Monsters game offers something for everyone. Adding even more is the team’s presence in the community and its importance to the state at large. “The Vermont Lake Monsters are woven into the fabric of Vermont,” says C. J. “I’m most excited to see all the fans come back and enjoy the ballpark.” U

BREWVIEW Vermont 2022 Issue 2
Cradled between the beautiful Green Mountains and stunning Lake St. Catherine, the family-owned and -operated Whaleback Vineyard is a unique and unforgettable wine-tasting experience. Owners Amy and Dennis
Brown and their two daughters have created a must-visit wine tasting destination. DECADES OF EXPERIENCE What started out as a hobby for Dennis more than 20 years ago has since become a true passion and lifeblood for him and his family. He has been growing and cultivating grapes on this family farm for decades while staying true to his Vermont roots. The name Whaleback Vineyard comes from local history books that described one of the nearby hillsides as Whaleback Hill because of the shape of the landscape. “We pride ourselves in only producing our grape wines from grapes that we can grow ourselves,” says Amy. “While some wineries import or purchase juices, we
grow all of our own grapes, which give our wines a flavor unique to this region.” Whaleback Vineyard grows grapes known as cold hardy grapes, which were developed out of the agricultural research done by the University of Minnesota. Cold hardy grapes were developed to withstand the winter temperatures of 20 to 25 degrees Fahrenheit below zero. Having these cold hardy grapes is the only way Amy and Dennis could have their own productive vineyard in Vermont. SOMETHING FOR EVERYONE They offer a variety of wines: a white wine, a rosé, two dessert wines, two fruit wines, an ice wine, and several red wine varieties. All of their wines are crafted from the highest quality grapes, grown in their very own vineyard. On nine acres of land, Whaleback Vineyard cultivates over
6,000 vines of St. Croix, Marquette, La Crescent, Frontenac, and Frontenac Gris grapes. Located on a family farm dating back to the 1700s, the vineyard’s tasting room sits within a beautiful colonial farmhouse that offers a uniquely Vermont backdrop for your wine tasting experience. Wine production takes place in a historic remodeled barn, and all wines are produced, cellared, and bottled on the Whaleback estate. During the fall harvest season, you can visit Whaleback

Vineyard and watch the completion of the winemaking process. Whaleback Winery is not only a winery but a brewing and winemaking supplies vendor, maple syrup maker, and a lovely wedding venue. They offer a little something for anyone visiting southern Vermont. PERFECT WEDDING VENUE Their charmingly rustic remodeled barn has been the perfect backdrop for many weddings. You can have your wedding ceremony inside the beautifully decorated barn or outside overlooking the vineyard. This perfect venue has received only five-star reviews. “Our historic barn event venue was initially renovated when our daughter Sadie wanted to get married on the property in 2017,” Amy says. “We have been hosting weddings and special events ever since!” Modeling the Vermont ethos of giving back to the local community, the Browns also put that picturesque barn to use by hosting high school proms and community dinners. And they wouldn’t be keeping true to their Vermont roots if they didn’t also make and sell their very own 100 percent natural maple syrup, all collected from trees on their property. The family has been sugaring on their land for over 25 years. Whaleback Vineyard offers free wine tastings Wednesday to Sunday from 11am to 5pm. Tours are available upon request. Planning an outing with friends? Group tastings are welcome. Inquire how you can schedule a large group tasting in their tasting room or in their small event room. They are also happy to accommodate bus tours. Stop by for a truly perfect Vermont experience! U

silent film star and got involved with the mob before meeting an untimely demise. Their legendary stories are part of a new brewery housed inside one of the town’s restored historic buildings. Jon and Rachel Meigs opened Scotch Hill Brewing Co. last fall inside the Calvi Building. The space was best known as a former grocery and old-fashioned ice cream parlor, and it’s now been given a makeover to become a new kind of gathering space for the community.
A FRESH START IN BREWING The Meigses met while working in healthcare and never expected to open a brewery together. Jon didn’t get hooked on brewing until after learning about the process from someone he worked with at his old job in a radiology department. “Over time, I just continued to become more interested in it and found it enjoyable,” he says. “I didn’t really think at the time that it was going to take me anywhere, but the idea to start my own
brewery just kind of grew," says Jon. Meanwhile, Rachel has a passion for the preservation of historic buildings. When they came across the brewery’s current location, they decided to take a chance and purchased the building in 2018. “It was kind of the perfect recipe,” says Rachel. “The building itself has great bones, so we restored the inside and made it the home for the brewery.” Breathing new life into a building that had been vacant for a few years came with some challenges, and the pandemic further complicated matters. In the fall of 2021, the pair decided it was time to start their new life outside of healthcare. “It was a matter of sink or swim here, and we decided that we weren’t going to let a pandemic get in our way,” says Rachel. “We’ve been doing just fine, and it’s been great, actually.”
SCOTCH HILL BREWERY’S STYLE Jon works with his assistant brewer, David Coker, to create a rotating tap of six beers. He considers their brewing style traditional but driven by giving customers what they want. “We’re not really what we consider mainstream, but we’re not really
extremists either in creating really wild beers,” says Jon. “We want to have a place where our beers are good, and they’re varied and appeal to as many people as possible.” While the tap list is constantly changing, Scotch Hill Brewery does have two flagship recipes. The Spitting Lyon Scotch www.BrewViewVT.com

Ale is named after Matthew Lyon, Fair Haven’s founder and a 1700s Congressman who started a brawl on the House floor when he spat on another politician. Jon describes the beer as having a tobacco-like, leathery aroma with flavors of caramel and chocolate with a smooth finish. The Black Betty Stout is a mild but crisp stout named after silent film actress and Fair Haven native Betty Benson, who led a wild, short, and tragic life. She died young after enduring the appalling conditions of the Los Angeles county jail for a short stint on charges of drug possession. Jon says his dark batches have even inspired some of his customers’ beer preferences to evolve. “It’s been fun to kind of see a lot of people’s taste change,” he says. “I have a lot of customers who come in who are curious to see what we have brewing next, and it’s hardly ever the same. We try to mix it up and have a balance of light beers versus dark beers and middle of the road.”

EXPERIMENTING WITH FOOD AND COFFEE The Meigses initially started their business focusing on beer but discovered that their customers were hungry for more. Although they partner with local food trucks on Fridays, they also have a food menu. “It kind of sparked us to keep pushing in a direction that we’re not really sure where we’re headed per se, but we are growing organically, and we are enjoying it as we go along the way,” says Jon. As the brewery evolves, the couple hopes to make early morning hours part of their business plan. “One of our future goals here is to actually provide coffee in the morning,” says Rachel. “We felt that our taproom very much mimicked a coffee shop in many ways, and that’s a service in our area that we’d like to provide for people.” A DIFFERENT KIND OF BREWERY While Scotch Hill Brewing has its fair share of regular customers, it also attracts visitors who travel from out-ofstate areas like New York, eager to visit as many Vermont breweries as possible. In a crowded field of competitors, the Meigses believe their brewery stands out for its beer and the historical experience people have when stepping through the doors. “The building itself is unique,” says Rachel. “There are a lot of craft breweries in Vermont, but none that look like ours. The bar inside is original, and it’s been there since the beginning of the building. We just really wanted to pay tribute not only to the history of the town but the history of the building.” U

Gathering Brews Whirligig Brewing makes beer a reflection of its community “I’VE ALWAYS WANTED TO CREATE A SPACE that gives back to the community,” says Geoffrey Sewake, head brewer and owner of Whirligig Brewing. And one could say he has successfully done just that. From a background in community development, Geoffrey has been able to turn brewing into a community practice. Upon opening in the heart of downtown St. Johnsbury, the brewery has not only served up a revolving offering of beers, it has become a meeting space for events, pop-ups, and bites to eat. HOOKED FROM THE START Geoffrey, one of the only BIPOC brewers currently in Vermont, decided to open Whirligig Brewing after years of loving all things food and beverage. “My mom bought me a home
30

brewing kit, and after that, I was hooked,” says Geoffrey. “I did everything I could to learn about the ins and outs of brewing.” With that newly found passion, Geoffrey took a chance to build something. “I really took the bull by the horns. I decided to open a brewery in St. Johnsbury, the community my wife grew up in. We wanted to give back to the area.” FREEDOM TO CREATE As a nanobrewery, Whirligig Brewing functions on a one-barrel system. “I tend not to rebrew any of my past beers,”
admits Geoffrey. “If you aren’t able to come by the brewery on a weekly basis, you might not even be able to taste a beer twice.” Geoffrey’s ever-changing roster of new brews ranges from lagers to stouts but mostly focuses on the production of sours and wild ales. Due to the nature of a one-barrel system, there is a limited supply of the beer created. While the taproom always offers nine different beers at a time, each visit to Whirligig Brewing is a new experience. “Having such a small barrel system allows me freedom for creativity,” says Geoffrey.
Named after the hyper colloquial term for the helicopter seed from maple trees, Geoffrey desired from the very beginning to make his brewery all things local. “I try to source all my ingredients locally if possible,” says Geoffrey. “It keeps the money in the area, and overall keeps with my goal of supporting my community. The brewery currently uses local grains and Vermont-grown hops in almost all of their brews and tries to get hyper-local ingredients whenever possible. The brewery also is home to various popups, board game nights, and events to keep with the ultimate goal of being a gathering place for the community. In the future, Geoffrey predicts that growth in the brewery will lead to more beers and more opportunities to bring people together. From monthly board game nights to an expanding barrel program, Whirligig Brewing has a lot on the horizon with the community always in mind. U

Common Roots Farm Nourishes Patrons and the Community Nonprofit offers produce and so much more Farmstand patrons at South Burlington’s Common Roots Farm aren’t just getting the freshest nutrient-dense organic produce around. They’re giving hungry neighbors nourishment, promoting land stewardship, and educating the community on dietary health. As if that wasn’t enough, Farmstand purchases also help secure the future of Vermont’s regional food system while respecting its past.

BREWVIEW Vermont 2022 Issue 2
“At Common Roots, community health is one of our top priorities. Our farm team considers our Farmstand patrons as ‘partners in community wellness,’ rather than merely customers,” says Common Roots Executive Director Carol McQuillen. DOWN AT THE FARMSTAND The 501(c)3 nonprofit organization aims to create a healthy and sustainable community by offering the highest quality produce and educational programs on nutrition and sustainability. To the left of their gravel road at 150 Allen Road East, you’ll find lovingly grown certified organic produce available from May through November on their idyllic 220-acre pesticide-free property, where breathing in the fresh Vermont air beats standing in a big box store checkout line. In addition to freshly harvested vegetables and herbs, the Farmstand at South Village offers breads, milk, cheeses, and frozen meats from local purveyors and artisans. Shoppers can also grab seasonal farm-grown flower bouquets and jars of healthful honey pollinated by resident bees. A variety of prepared seasonal entrées, soups, sauces, rubs, salsa, pesto, baked goods, and pickled produce crafted by Common Roots Farm’s Executive Chef Anthony Jones are available at the Farmstand.
Swinging by the Farmstand also serves as an opportunity to enjoy social interaction, learn about nutrition, connect with how food is grown, and find new recipes to prepare purchases from the farm. This year, the Farmstand has a full-time assistant on-site to answer questions and assist members using the checkout system. Those looking to get more bang for their buck at the Farmstand or assist in Common Roots Farm’s mission can purchase a Farmstand membership. Memberships help pay for up-front seasonal labor, seeds, and equipment for production. Common Roots Farm is looking to add at least 50 new members and will offer Bonus Farmstand Dollars, based
on a percentage of their membership fee, to those who sign up by June 1. HEALTHY COMMUNITIES, SUSTAINABLE PRACTICES When Common Roots Farm says they want their community to eat healthily, they mean it. Their commitment to the highest organic growing standards has led

them to be certified as one of 850 Real Organic Project (ROP) farms in the US. It’s just one of the reasons why food from the Farmstand tastes so good. Common Roots Farm uses a low-till method to amplify the nutrient density of their chemical-free soil to support better, healthier crops through the season. Nutrient-rich soil creates nutrient-rich produce that fuels bodies while tasting wildly delicious. “We love the positives of local ag[riculture] for our landscape, our farmers, our economy—and we enjoy nourishing our neighbors!” says Common Roots Land Educator JoAnne Dennee. Common Roots Farms believes that proper nourishment and healthy food are the foundation for creating a flourishing community, which is why their motto is “Nourish to Flourish.” In 2005, after a group of parents, teachers, and educators found the food being offered at local schools unsuitable for the developing minds of the great thinkers and doers of tomorrow, the Farm to School program was created. They were concerned over the impression the disconnect between talk and action was making on students when learning about nutrition. “Children who are nourished, as opposed to fed, have more sustained concentration and energy. As an adult, I have experienced this difference myself,” Carol says. Common Roots Farms’ Farm to School programs now educate children, faculty, and families on the importance of local, healthy, mindful eating through classroom instruction. Students also learn how to make healthy meals they cook and bring home to their families. FEEDING THE NEIGHBORHOOD In addition to educating their community, Common Roots Farm also feeds it. More than one-third of all the food produced by Common Roots Farm feeds local families facing
34

food insecurity through its Food Shelf programs. Common Roots Farm also offers food education, taste tests, and recipes at their Food Shelf locations. This summer, they plan to introduce Food Shelf participants to growing their own food by providing them with plants, instruction at the farm’s 40 raised beds, instructional videos, organic compost, and follow-up support to help them become self-sufficient. Interns also learn how to maintain the farm and sustainably produce crops to educate the next generation of farmers that Common
Roots Farms hopes will grow and secure the local and regional food supply. "Our aim is to do more than provide our friends with food. In teaching our neighbors everything from soil to consumption, they gain a greater sense of self-reliance overall." SHARING GOOD TIMES, GOOD FOOD Common Roots Farm does all that without school district or taxpayer dollars, though they hope that schools and municipalities will see the value in and prioritize their
programming in the future. Funding comes through donations, the Farmstand, the Farm to Fork Tuesdays and Flatbread Friday chef-prepared meal programs, and events. Common Roots Farms offer field trips, social events, and programs that pay homage to Abenaki culture. Their Historic Wheeler Homestead property can also be rented for catering events like weddings, family reunions, company retreats, and bat or bar mitzvahs. What Makes Brewfest Beverage Company So Unique? This bottle shop is one of a kind in southern Vermont it’s just turned into a powerhouse,” Mike says. “It’s really fantastic.” Brewfest is a family affair. The Baileys's daughter, Kristen Mailhiot, is the administrative manager and has led the effort behind the store's recent rebranding. Their new website, designed by Four Nine Design, will be one of the first in the state to offer online ordering.
I
n the 2,000-person resort town of Ludlow, Vermont, the main attractions tend to be waterfalls, swimming holes, and ski destinations. But since 2010, Ludlow has also been home to another special spot for locals and visitors to enjoy: Brewfest Beverage Company, a one-stopshop for craft beer, wine, and liquor. Mike and Lorraine Bailey own Brewfest Beverage. They started out in the video industry, running a small chain of rental stores for years. When that sector started dying out, they realized they needed a new business plan, “One
that isn’t going to be taken over by the internet,” Mike explained. The couple were fans of craft beer and noticed their area was in need of a good bottle shop. They decided to provide one. “We really had a game plan. We built it from scratch with all our own money, and

THE BEER GURU Kristen’s husband Jared serves as “Beer Guru” and is responsible for finding, choosing, and sourcing the beer. Jared, Mike says, has an incredible palate and memory. He combines that with a true love of craft beer and his brewing knowledge to help create a completely unique store. Brewfest dedicates a large portion of its coolers (six or seven doors’ worth, typically) to beers made locally or within the state. It also provides a huge selection of hard-tofind brews from across the country and even the world. “If there’s a brewery that’s coming out or expanding or getting press, he’s going to know about it, and he’s going to go after it,” Mike says of Jared. “We’re one of the few retailers in the southern part of the state that carries Foam. I would match our beer selection to anybody in the state.” CARE OF THE PRODUCT Brewfest takes great care to make sure it offers not only the best products but that it keeps them in the best condition. throughout its travel and storage in order to maintain its hop-heavy character. Careful ordering and constant product rotation allow them to provide the freshest beer possible to their customers. This has always been their goal, as reflected in their slogan, "Take Good Beer Home!" Lorraine Bailey handles the ancillary products, like homebrewing supplies, cigars, mixers, snacks, and Brewfest merchandise. Her brother and sister work there, too. The whole family handles the liquor section together.

SUNSHINE, HOPS, AND RAINBOWS It isn’t all sunshine, hops, and rainbows trying to keep the establishment as impressive as it is; the store does face some challenges. Vermont doesn’t allow retailers to drive to other locations to bring in alcohol that isn’t distributed, which is somewhat limiting. That hasn’t been much of a problem for them, though. “If it’s available and it’s worthy, we have it,” Mike says. Brewfest Beverage, like so many others, has
BREWVIEW Vermont 2022 Issue 2
struggled with staff shortages throughout the pandemic. Mike says it's hard work making sure the shelves stay full—both in keeping track of orders and in the physical labor of hauling boxes of bottles around. The store also faces major swings in how busy it is. During peak skiing season in the winter, Mike says that Ludlow can easily have ten times its population in tourists coming through the area on any given weekend. Things slow down majorly in transitional months like April and May, only to pick back up again in the summer. Brewfest Beverage Company is in a fantastic location, right off of Vermont’s main east-west corridor, so it gets a lot of people stopping in. Another draw for tourists and residents alike? Brewfest is one of its kind in Ludlow. “Nobody is doing what we do in this area,” Mike says. “Not the way we do it.” With craft beer, high-end spirits, and fine wines all part of an ever-expanding industry, the Bailey family doesn’t have to worry about an internet takeover this time around. U
CANNABIS CORNER BY KATHY BLUME, JESSILYN DOLAN, AND AMELIA
QUOTE OF THE SMOKE
I could do stuff.
Reviews: Dos-Mints and Strawberry Slurpee Many people think you smoke the leaves of the cannabis plant. In fact, you smoke the female plant's unpollinated flower. When processed, this flower is also known as a bud or nug. While there are many ways to partake of cannabis, a couple of the easiest, most traditional methods are to smoke pieces of the bud in a pipe or grind it up to roll a joint, which is what we do for our testing process. One of the things we look for when inspecting a mature cannabis flower is the appearance of little orange hairs called pistils. They’re the female plant's sex organs. They start out clear, and as the flower matures and approaches readiness for harvest, they turn a dark amber or reddish-purple. Another thing we look for is a white, frosting-like coating on the plant. This coating is composed of trichomes, tiny crystals that appear late in the plant's arc
of maturation. They start out clear and then turn cloudy—another sign that the plant is ready to harvest. The trichomes are also loaded with a very sticky resin that is full of THC, the psychoactive compound in cannabis. When the flower is harvested, processors remove all the leaves but try to keep the trichomes intact. Strain: Dos-Mints Genetics: Do-Si-Dos x Thin Mints Company: SinCity Seeds Grower: Bushy Beard Cultivation
Dos-Mints from SinCity Seeds presented us with a tightly packed, mature-looking bud. As we inspected our Dos-Mints bud, we noticed that the trichomes were mostly cloudy rather than clear, and the pistils were a dark reddish-purple, which means the cannabis was harvested later in the maturation process. While our sample had some of the mid-winter dryness you tend to see with
Vermont cannabis, it still had good density. However, we noticed that the trim was quite close and that some of the trichomes had been chopped off at the head. Normally, the resin from trichomes will stick to your fingers or cause your grinder to clog up with plant matter. Because many of the trichomes had been partially removed during the trimming process, we encountered no finger-stickiness or grinder-clog— something you might normally expect from quality weed. Dos-Mints gave off a lovely light-green, fruity aroma with a welcoming vibe that even the most tentative cannabis newbie would appreciate. Whether smoked with a 1-hitter (a small glass pipe) or rolled in a joint, Dos-Mints coated our mouths with a creamy, slightly sour, gently grassy taste and left us feeling upbeat, happy, energetic, and capable of doing anything from playing music to cleaning the house to going for a walk. This was a light, kind, yet long-lasting high, great for maintaining thought, speech, and function—and hanging out with friends on or off the couch. @bushy_beard_cultivation www.BrewViewVT.com

Strain: Strawberry Slurpee Genetics: XJ13 and StrawNana Company: Bred by Malek in collaboration with Breckenridge Organic Therapy Grower: Forbin's Finest Dominant terpenes: pinene and ocimene
Strawberry Slurpee, grown by Forbin's Finest from a breeding collaboration between Malech and Breckenridge, came out of the jar in a beautifully tight, closely trimmed nug. While it felt dry to the touch and didn't clog the grinder, the grind itself had a fluffy, velvety feel that was a pleasure to work with when rolling a joint. Strawberry Slurpee is also appropriately named, as it gives off an intensely berry-like scent, particularly after being ground. But with hints of balsamic as well, it had a fundamentally sophisticated aroma. In contrast, the “pear-shaped” flavor was almost unremarkably mild, with

The "creep weed” surprise came when the high ran right up the back of our heads after only a couple of hits on the glass. While the smoke was a bit mouth-numbing and cough-inducing (and funkier-smelling than the aroma coming off the nug), the overall effect was truly awesome. Anxiety abated, hatred of humanity fell away, and the only thing that would have made the experience better would have been the chance to soak in a hot tub while spooning from a big bowl of brownie batter. forbinsfinest.com
