Through the Lens with photographer Nick Sulzer
BEST OF JACKSON HOLE 2021
Nick Sulzer spent his summers and school breaks skiing in Jackson while attending The University of Wisconsin Stout. After buying a camera that first summer, he slowly taught himself the basics of photography and began documenting his time in the Valley. From then on, he knew photography would be his career. The first few years were spent shooting landscapes and lifestyle photos. It wasn’t until he found a used telephoto lens on Facebook, that he began to explore the world of wildlife photography.
With a strong passion for the outdoors and living in one the most wildlife rich areas in the U.S., Nick has dedicated his free time trying to capture animals in their environment. He has mastered patience and being in the right place at the right time, thus he has been able to photograph a variety of animals in Grand Teton National Park and the surrounding areas. When he’s not out taking photos, Nick enjoys snowboarding, dirt biking, camping, and being on the water.

It started in the back of the Thai Me Up restaurant. Melvin Brewing has been serving up award-winning beers with a side of hip-hop and kung fu. The idea for Melvin originally developed on the coast of California with a desire to bring a West Coast-style IPA to the “west coast” of Wyoming, aka Jackson. As Melvin has started to grow more and more, they now have a production facility south of town in Alpine producing more deliciously creative brews.
Bringing the worlds of food and beer under one roof, restaurateur Gavin Fine and homebrewer Colby Cox created Roadhouse Brewing Co. It just recently expanded into two locations, a taproom and a pub/eatery. Roadhouse aims to minimize its carbon footprint through its brewing process while producing delicious beers crafted in the Tetons.

Camp Cooking 101 By Tory Cameron
Photo: Cole Buckhart
Heading into the outdoors can be fun and also intimidating, especially when it comes to food. Often, cooking outside of your kitchen is daunting! Your space is smaller, the utensils are lighter, and you’re likely working with a tiny, portable burner. Not ideal! However, it is easy to cook delicious and nutritious meals on the road or in the backcountry with a bit of planning. These recipes will fuel your body with nutrient-dense foods, giving you more energy to explore the great outdoors.
SNACKS:
When camping or hiking, it is essential to eat enough calories to sustain your energy needs. Keeping up with those needs means snacking on healthy foods throughout the day. Try making your own energy balls or trail mix for a grab-and-go snack on the move. Our favorite recipe for easy energy balls is to the right.
PUMPKIN SPICED ENERGY BITES (PREPARE AT HOME—MAKES 15 BITES) 1 1/2 - 2 cups old-fashioned oats 1/2 cup all-natural peanut butter 1/2 cup pumpkin puree 1/4 cup honey 1 tsp vanilla extract 1/2 tsp cinnamon 1/2 cup dried cranberries 1/4 cup pumpkin seeds or chia DIRECTIONS Combine all ingredients in a large bowl (starting with 1 1/2 cups of oats). Mix well with a rubber spatula. If the mixture seems too wet, add an additional 1/2 cup of oats. Using hands, shape into 15 balls. Place on a cookie sheet with wax paper and refrigerate for at least 1 hour.
TETON WINING & DINING
DINNER: Dinner tends to be the most stressful meal of camping. After a long day of exploring, no one wants to cook. Luckily, there are easy ways to take the stress out of cooking. Utilizing preprepped veggies is the best way to save time. No time to prep ahead of time? That’s okay, too! Canned goods will be your best friend. Check out the recipe below for an easy, mostly prepfree, dinner option. FOUR-CAN CHILI (SERVES 4) 1 medium onion, chopped 1 tbsp olive oil 1 14 oz. can black beans, drained 1 14 oz. can red kidney beans, drained 1 14 oz. can diced tomatoes 1 can chipotle peppers in adobo sauce, seeds removed 2 cups vegetable stock 2 tsp salt 1 tsp garlic powder 1 tsp cumin DIRECTIONS Start by scraping the seeds out of the chipotle peppers. (Most of the spice is in the seeds!) Roughly chop the peppers and keep the adobo sauce. In a large pot, heat the olive oil over medium/high heat. Add the onions and sauté until they begin to soften. Add the drained kidney and black beans, tomatoes, chopped chipotles, leftover adobo sauce, vegetable stock, salt, and spices. Stir to combine. Cook for about 20 mins. until the chili is thickened. Serve immediately with your choice of toppings such as cheese, avocado, and green onions. *adapted from FreshOffTheGrid.com

DESSERT: You don’t want to sleep on this! There is nothing better than ending a long day in the mountains with a sweet treat. Try our stafffavorite banana boat recipe for an interactive and delicious way to make the most out of your campfire. CAMPFIRE BANANA BOATS Bananas Peanut butter or other nut butter Dark chocolate Mini marshmallows Crumbled graham crackers Aluminum foil DIRECTIONS Take a banana with the peel still on and cut down the middle (along the concave side). Cut until the knife grazes the other side without cutting all the way through. Stuff the banana with peanut butter, dark chocolate, and mini marshmallows. Wrap the banana in foil and place on the edge of your campfire. Carefully remove the banana with tongs after 5 min. or until the banana feels soft. Unwrap and top with crumbled graham crackers. Now that you have the tools for fueling your body, it is time to get out and explore! Spending time outdoors is beneficial for mind, body, and soul and provides a reset from daily life stressors. Be sure to pack enough water, layers of clothing, and sunscreen in addition to nutritious food. Happy trails!

In the last year, the Town of Jackson has allowed several restaurants to set up outdoor dining areas on sidewalks and in parking spaces, known as “parklets.” The idea aims to provide a safer option for “dining-in.” Downtown Jackson has a new look, with dining areas spilling onto the sidewalks and taking over parking spaces. That being said, outdoor dining is not a new concept in Jackson Hole. The beautiful summer weather and awe-inspiring views lend the town to a lovely al fresco Inspired by the small wine dining experience. Here are shops found throughout Italy, some of our favorites:

Mountains on Your Mind
By Ryan Burke Photo: Elise Sterck
A clear mind, a respite from stress, a heightened state of contentment are just a few of the side effects one can expect from a healthy dose of nature. Doctors may not prescribe a trip down the Snake River or an ascent of the Grand Teton, but nature has always been the original therapist’s office. Locals and visitors alike understand this draw to nature, which is why they spend time in
this region. But have you ever sat and wondered why being in nature makes you feel better? Unplugging from daily life and attuning to the trail in front of you is a meditation in motion. Whether you are feeling the pull of gravity during a climb or leaning your bike into a sharp corner, nature often demands your full attention. During these visceral experiences, the mind maintains focus on the present moment and your brain’s circuitry shifts away from the default mode network, which is the system responsible for rumination and self-doubt. Prioritizing problems over progress is the brain’s way
of trying to conserve energy. Time in nature helps override this negative “autopilot” by giving your mind something more engaging to concentrate on. We shift into manual control during an adventure because our ancestors’ survival depended on staying sharp in outdoor spaces. The pleasure chemical dopamine helps accomplish this goal of total absorption by making time in wilderness fun, thus motivating you to wander through the woods, and search out new places more often. Your genetic instincts pull you towards jagged summits and wide valleys in search of prime real estate to help you identify food sources or forecast potential threats. These big open spaces can also be accompanied by a feeling of transcendence,
HIGH ALTITUDE HEALTH & WELLNESS
where it can be difficult to distinguish where your body ends and the world begins. These feelings of awe deactivate your superior parietal lobe, which indicates where your body is located in space, making you feel more connected to the world around you. Many people would describe these peak experiences as spiritual, mainly because they result in an awareness of your surroundings that is very difficult to replicate in everyday life. To your modern-day self, it doesn’t matter that these positive associations are an evolutionary by-product of a long gone era. What matters is that nature is a gateway that shows you how good life can be. In fact, neuroscience research indicates that exercising in nature reduces stress, improves your mood, and heightens self-control at a much higher rate than
working out indoors. This isn’t surprising news to anyone who has spent a few days hiking the Teton Crest Trail or fly fishing in the Hoback River. There truly is no substitute for the silence and stillness that nature provides. Mountains and rivers will always be a conduit for transformation because this is when your brain is changing the most. Through a process called neurogenesis new brain cells are constantly created when we exercise and navigate novel terrain. The brain does this in order to promote growth in the hippocampus, the learning center of the brain. Every time you take the kayak out for a spin or wander around a new corner in your backyard, your brain is growing literally and figuratively. Your brain needs challenges to become your optimal self. Even on a cellular level, your brain will atrophy if it doesn’t get stimulated with physical and mental stress. This good
49
kind of stress is voluntary by design, like choosing to go for a run on a summer day. If you consciously make a choice to push yourself, the synapses going to the problem-solving center of your brain are strengthened. If the stress is involuntary, like getting cut off in traffic, the circuitry going to your fear center increases in power. Your brain knows the difference, and nature is the perfect training ground to make your brain work for you instead of against you. With the health benefits outlined above, it’s no wonder that Jackson Hole’s parks, forests, mountains, rivers, and lakes are teeming with recreationists. Embracing time in nature is not only beautiful and enjoyable, but results in an upward trajectory of self-growth and wisdom. Adventures outside are proven to have healing benefits for your mind, body, and soul. Therefore, make an effort to treat your mind like a valuable resource, working to preserve your mental health the same way you would the forest and waters of Jackson Hole.

Shayne and Hansen Earthworks did an incredible job on our property and I cannot recommend them highly enough. We have a large site with steep slopes and unstable soils perched high on a butte. They took apart and rebuilt the hillside, stabilizing the terrain and creating a solid base for our home and large yard. Their work was excellent and impresses everyone who visits. — Andy Salter

NCLUDED) (CARTOONISTS I
ff ly Grei By Emi For local cartoonist, entrepreneur, mountaineer, and creative-thinker Ryan Stolp, visual language has become his way of understanding—and communicating to—the world around him. Stolp, Co-Founder and CCO of Orijin Media, first began using cartoons as a means of communication on a semesterlong break from college. “I took a gap semester to learn Spanish by traveling around Argentina and Chile,” shared Stolp. “Though I had taken Spanish for years, the language hadn’t yet stuck, and I
wanted the opportunity to learn through immersion.” During this time, Stolp captured his memories through a visual journal. Heavy on pictures and light on words, excerpts from the journal depict Stolp meeting new friends, climbing and mountaineering, and sleeping under the stars. He used the journal as a way to keep up with his interests in illustration and storytelling. The journal was a challenge to himself, a way to pass time in his tent, and oftentimes, a way to communicate when the language barrier proved too much.
Though his travels eventually came to an end, his love for illustrating and storytelling did not. These days, Stolp is most well-known locally for his comic series in the Jackson Hole Daily called Lift Lines. A satirical depiction of life in Jackson Hole, Lift Lines originated from a desire to grow Orijin’s business. “We wanted to run advertising in the Daily, and I thought, ‘How do we make this fun? Why not try and drum up some business through a comic?’” It worked. After three and a half years, Stolp has created over 700 Lift Lines comics, and Orijin has worked with over 150 partners

in Jackson Hole. So how does Stolp come up with a joke featured in each drawing? “I have a running list of ideas,” he says. “They usually come to me one or two beers in when I’m talking with friends, or from overhearing conversations around town.” He admits this has been a bit harder during quarantine with limited social interaction. “I’m especially interested in current events. If you can make a current event fit a unique mountain town, that’s a perspective that you won’t get anywhere else.” Stolp says it’s Jackson’s close-knit community that make these drawings especially relatable and thus, humorous. “It’s easy to be a cartoonist in a small “The town because everyone has shared mentality and

context.” Many of his drawings feature wildlife, ski jargon, and weather-related themes that many who live in Jackson, or have visited, can relate to. “I draw inspiration from the why and the what. I ask myself, ‘Why is this funny to people?’ or ‘What makes Jackson unique?’ I try to capture that in the humor of Lift Lines.” Stolp takes pride in his work and notes that having a comic in the paper is an opportunity that he may not have had living in a larger city. But that’s not the only reason he finds living in Jackson unique. Stolp views everyone who lives here as an entrepreneur-of-sorts. “You have to have a passion and vision to live here because it’s not the standard path. If your passion is getting outdoors, you hustle like an entrepreneur to get your work done and enjoy time outside … the whole ‘work hard, play hard’ mentality. If you’re an artist, you hustle to spend time outside in order to find your inspiration. Everyone here is hustling,

Read more on instagram @liftlines_comics and they see that in each other … and it makes Jackson what it is. Jackson is a really vibrant, connected, and genuine community. And sometimes, just like an entrepreneur, there are risks involved with your pursuits that you might not encounter with a more traditional life path. Like injury, for example. The mentality and philosophy in Jackson allows for people to really live their life on their own terms. And this mentality is what makes it such a unique art community, and community in general.” So what are Stolp’s favorite things to do in Jackson? “I love that I can go mountaineering during the day, but sleep in my bed at night. The access to the mountains cannot be beat.” In addition to mountaineering, Stolp is an avid climber and skier. He also enjoys an evening out at The Bird (GoldBest Burger, Gold-Best Wings, Silver-Best Bar). “The Bird will always have a special place in my heart as my first apartment in Jackson was directly above it. It’s the best place for vibes, food, and meeting people in the community that make Jackson special.” Another favorite

When I go out to eat I want something that I can’t cook myself with a variety of flavors. Gather’s menu has so much diversity, fusion, and depth—I love it.”
outside, working hard for clients, or pursuing his artistic endeavors, Stolp can be found at a Moose Hockey game (GoldBest Local Sports Team). “I love watching hockey, drinking beers, hanging with friends, and dancing. Moose games And when he isn’t getting have it all!”
