Jacob was born and raised in Cheyenne, the capital city of Wyoming. His first experiences in Jackson Hole were when he was a young child traveling on summer family road trips through Wyoming. In college, he spent a summer living in the heart of Grand Teton National Park working for a lodge. That is when he decided he wanted to permanently move there, where he combines his two passions of adventure and storytelling through photo, video, and writing. The Story Behind the Snake River Rapids By Jacob Gore

It’s 6 a.m. You wake up to the sound of your alarm met with a small adrenaline rush once you remember why you are up so early. Outside the window you see the Tetons glowing pink from a phenomena called alpenglow as the sun inches its way above the horizon. You look at your attire and debate which layers are best for the adventure ahead. It’s a cold, wet summer morning, and doubts storm your mind for what you are about to get yourself into. A picture of the Snake River taken by Ansel Adams hanging from your wall catches your eye, and you decide to leave the comfort and warmth of your room. On your drive you see views of Snow King Mountain towering over the town of Jackson. A steaming cup of coffee paired with a huckleberry scone from Persephone Bakery (Gold-Best Bakery, Silver-Best Coffee Shop, BronzeBest Breakfast) gives you the confidence and energy to face what is up ahead.
experience on the Snake and is your raft guide for the day. You are given a safety speech about how to keep yourself in the raft and the proper way to sit while you put on your life vest. A scenic shuttle drive provides views of the Teton Range towering over the valley of Jackson Hole. Soon you enter the Snake River Canyon.
Soon you arrive at the office and are greeted by Bud Chatham, owner of Dave Hansen Whitewater (Gold-Rafting Company, GoldBest Family-friendly Activity), who has 15 years of

Your attention is quickly drawn to the river as you approach the West Table boat ramp and see where your adventure will begin. The water is running fast, much faster than you imagined. Once you dip your hand in you are fully awakened by the sensation of 65-degree water. Your crew loads up and the raft is pushed off from the shore as you begin slowly floating down the Snake. Bud starts explaining the history and geography behind the mighty Snake River.

Idaho, meeting up with the Columbia River after a 1,078-mile journey and eventually flowing into the Pacific Ocean. Providing habitat for many different animals such as trout, bald eagles, osprey, moose, otters, and beavers (just to name a few), the river is an essential part of the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem. The Snake also provides many recreational opportunities to fly fishermen and rafters seeking adventure on the water. Drift boats from outfitters like Jackson Hole Fly Fishing School (Gold-Best Fishing Outfitter) and Westbank Anglers (Silver-Best Fishing Outfitter) can be seen along the mellow parts of the river. Fly fishermen focus their attention on pockets in the river containing Yellowstone cutthroat trout, a unique subspecies of trout only found in the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem. Along with the fishermen, large boats are seen (you might see river guide Alex Carr) floating slowly down the mellow parts of the river that extend through the valley. These comforting float trips are offered by companies like Triangle X Ranch for those who enjoy calm water and scenic views that include a variety of wildlife. Some might recognize the river from the wellknown “Tetons And The Snake River” photograph captured by Ansel Adams in 1942. The image shows the Grand Teton towering over a windy Snake River. The History of the river goes back even further. In July 1925, river runner Amos Burg began a canoe trip on the Snake River from its source to Portland, Oregon. Although he capsized near the mouth of Bailey Creek in the Snake River Canyon south of Jackson Hole, he continued on his adventure and became the first person to run the Snake River from its source to its confluence with the Columbia River.
gash into the highway, which had to close for two weeks for repairs. More importantly, though, the landslide has permanently changed the river. With the debris acting like a natural dam, the landslide washed out the legendary Taco Hole and other playful waves in the S turns that were just upstream of the slide. Thankfully though, it did create a fantastically fun stretch of new Class III rapids named Double Draw.” Once your first true Class III is conquered, you notice an interesting set of waves ahead. Bud continues his story about the second Class III in the canyon.
HAIRCUT ROCK (GUIDE HANDLE) “With the river narrowing and forming some sharp turns, Haircut Rock had always been a tricky maneuver, but after Double Draw was formed, causing the downstream currents to pick up dramatically along this area, the move to avoid Haircut Rock became especially hot. Upstream of Haircut, there is a nice wave train river right along some dramatic rock ledges. The current picks up up significantly, especially during lower water levels, and cuts hard river right. The swift current often grabs unsuspecting rafts and sweeps them into the overhanging rock ledge known as Haircut Rock. A lot of river runners miss the rock, just by a hair.” Shortly after Haircut Rock is a dangerous hydraulic that can reach a Class IV during high water. A hydraulic is where water drops over an obstruction, like a rock ledge or a rock, into deeper water on the downstream side. This causes water on the surface to be drawn back toward the rock or ledge.
After decades of exploration and finding ways to conquer the treacherous Snake River Canyon, the first commercial tour was given on June 9, 1940, by Clyde Smith and sons Jacks and Don from Idaho.
DOUBLE DRAW “Double Draw was created by the most significant geological movement to affect the Snake River Canyon,” Bud explains. “In 2011, after a record year of snowfall, a massive landslide occurred in the area called Double Draw, that piled over 200,000 cubic yards of debris across US-89 and into the Snake River. This slide cut a 7-foot

three o’clock …in the morning. They floated in the moonlight, with Henry rowing and Dave holding a spare oar to push off any logjams that Henry did not see. They floated to Gros Ventre Island, where they all camped out for the night under the Wyoming sky.

THREE OAR DEAL “Up ahead is the most dangerous hydraulic on the river that was famously named after the founders of Barker-Ewing Whitewater (Silver-Best Rafting Outfitter),” Bud explains as he navigates the river. “Dick Barker, Frank Ewing and their wives floated into the Class V hydraulic in one of their massive center oar frames and got stuck in a recirculator. They broke three of their four wooden oars trying to get out of the two currents that were stopping them in place … hence the name Three Oar Deal. After eight minutes of holding on for dear life on top of their raft, the hydraulic finally spit them out.”
“That next morning, they got up, cooked up some breakfast, and floated down to Wilson. As they were loading the raft back on the rig, Dave WEST TABLE turned to Mike and Henry and said, ‘Let’s go boat ramp float the canyon.’

Now the sun is high in the sky and the water feels nice. Off in the distance you see something that strikes fear in you once again. You think “How is this possible?” and prepare for your raft to flip into the fast-flowing rapids, only to open your eyes and see that you have made it through. With a smile on his face, Bud goes into the history behind one of the largest rapids in the Snake River Canyon that you and your rafting peers just conquered.

“Now, neither had floated the Snake River Canyon much recently because Henry and Dave were guiding trips that mostly started at Moose. But there was no hesitation … with their 12-foot navy assault raft loaded on the trailer, they drove down to Elbow to run the canyon.
“Having not run the canyon since the spring runoff had subsided, they were a tad unfamiliar with the waves. Coming around the corner at Blind Canyon, they were preparing themselves for what they thought was the biggest rapid on the river, Lunch Counter. To their surprise though, their 12-foot raft was climbing up a wave and then headed straight down Big Kahuna into a wall of water that stopped the raft Lunch Counter in its tracks. No one on the raft knew what had just hit them and just before Ropes Rapid their raft flipped over, Mike Douglas famously yelled, ‘Here comes the Big Kahuna!’ referencing the waves Champaign Rapids they had seen in Hawaii.” Cottonwood Rapid

BIG KAHUNA “It was mid-July in 1967, and The Diamonds were playing to a packed house inside the Silver Dollar Bar (Silver-Best Bar) at the Wort Hotel (Silver-Best Hotel), singing their hit songs ‘Lil Darling’ and ‘The Stroll’ and bragging to the crowd about the ‘Kahuna’ waves they surfed on tour while they were in Hawaii. The show was over about 2 a.m. and Mike Douglas, lead singer for The Diamonds and good friend of Dave Hansen’s, turned to Dave and said ‘Let’s go float the river.’ “So Dave, Henry Tomingas, Mike and a few others hopped in Henry’s van and headed up to Moose, putting in on the river at

Although many rafts flip here, Bud’s extensive experience of the river helps navigate your raft through the rushing water. Only a few hundred feet ahead you see what looks like surfers carving up and ver down 10-foot ’s Ri Grey walls of water in a treacherous looking section. Bud explains that the Lunch Counter ALPINE rapid is one of the boat ramp most well-known rapids in the Snake River, and attracts surfers from all over with its endless waves.

LUNCH COUNTER The surfers see your raft and quickly swim back onto the shore where they watch everybody in the boat scream with excitement, joy, and fear as the raft crashes down through the waves. Once you have made it out with adrenaline still pumping through your body, Bud tells you the interesting history behind this rapid. “One day in 1967, Dave Hansen and his friend, Henry Tomingas, decided to raft the Snake River

CHAMPAGNE “Champagne was named by one of the original outfitters in the Snake River Canyon, Denny Becker. The rapid is a massive underwater waterfall, going from 2-3 feet deep to 50-60 feet deep, pulling anything down that floats over it … including air. The result is millions of tiny little air bubbles that surface again at the end of the rapid … just like pouring a

Canyon. Even though both of them had been guiding float trips upstream, neither young man had ever rafted the section, but they both looked right at one another and feigned expertise, ‘Of course, I’ve rafted this section. No problem.’ “Putting in around the ramp called Elbow now, about 6 miles into the trip, they looked down the river and saw the cresting, pulsing waves of a large rapid. Silence fell over the pair as they observed the series of waves ahead of them, pulsing with 8-10 foot walls. “Uncertainly, Dave asked, ‘Henry, what the hell is that?’ “Henry, equally amazed and ready to come clean, said ‘Hell, I don’t know. I’ve never been here either!’ “Realizing there was no going back, Dave laughed and said, ‘Well, if we’re ever going to get our lunch handed to us, we’re going to get it right now.’ ” After making it past Lunch Counter, you begin to reminisce about yesterday’s sloshie, a frozen Greyhound made with vodka and fresh-squeezed grapefruit juice, from Creekside Market & Deli (Gold-Best Sloshie, Gold-Best Locally Owned Store). Bud continues to talk about the remaining rapids as your raft eases closer.
ROPES “Legendary local outdoorsman and early outfitter John Simms named this section of river for the vision of the wave trains on each side of the river, both developing off the steep canyon walls, funneling together like a braided rope. During normal water flows, the top of this section of river

COTTONWOOD “The last section of waves, and also the longest section of waves, has had a few names throughout the river community. Denny Becker named the section Cottonwood because Cottonwood Creek enters during the middle of the rapid. John Simms and Charlie Sands called the section Holy City for the number of “holes” throughout the rapid … especially during higher water levels. The rapid though is generally known through the river community as Cottonwood.” After Cottonwood, Bud tells you that the trip is close to an end. You reach down and feel your hand drag through the water as the raft pulls into shore. On the drive back to Jackson you stop at Hoback Market (Silver-Best Sloshie) for snacks and decide to try one of their 13 sloshie flavors. This time it’s a Gros Ventre Slide, made from Kahlúa, Baileys and vodka. Once back at the office you hand Bud a sizeable tip and say your goodbyes. One of your fellow rafters recommends a bar that’s off the beaten path, the historical Stagecoach Bar (Gold-Best Bar, Gold-Best Place to Boogie) at the base of Teton Pass. You show up only to see a crowd of seasonal workers wearing getups straight out of the 70s. The bartender tells you it’s Disco Night as you take a sip from your Melvin Brewing (Silver-Best Brewery, Silver-Best Local Food & Drink Producer) 2x4 Double IPA. You begin to recollect your successful day on the river, and can’t help but end the night with a warm cheers and a huge smile.

Beer-Braised Flavor Fiesta
Use Local Ingredients to Make the Best Tacos in the Valley By Tory Cameron
Although Jackson is a relatively small town, the food and drink scene rivals that of many big cities. The flavors that come out of this valley are truly mind-blowing. From hand-baked bread to liquors, beers, honey, and cheese, Jackson is an epicenter of local production.
Utilizing the crockpot ensures that the meat will be extremely tender and flavorful. It makes a substantial amount of food that can feed up to 10 people. The Mexican lager and citrus add a slightly tangy flavor, while the chili powder and smoked paprika help to kick up the spice level.
This recipe utilizes the diverse flavors that can be found around the valley. Feel free to sub out any of the ingredients listed below or utilize fresh produce from the People’s Market (Gold-Best Summer Activity).
Don’t have any elk? These tacos can be made with just about any meat that lends itself to slow cooking. Head to Sweet Cheeks Meats (GoldBest Local Food or Drink Producer) and ask what they recommend!
INGREDIENTS •
2 tablespoons olive oil
•
salt and pepper
•
2-3 lbs. elk roast, bonein pork shoulder, or beef shoulder
•
1 white onion, diced
•
5 cloves garlic, diced
•
1/2 cup orange juice
•
1 can Heyzeus Mexican lager from Melvin Brewing
•
32 oz. chicken stock
•
juice of 1 lime
•
1 cinnamon stick
•
2 tablespoons cumin
•
2 tablespoons dried oregano
•
1 tablespoon chili powder
•
2 teaspoons smoked paprika
•
pinch of cayenne pepper

INSTRUCTIONS 1. Heat olive oil in a large cast-iron pan over medium-high heat. 2. Combine spices and a few large pinches of salt and pepper. 3. Rub the spice mixture all over the surface of the meat. Sear the roast in the cast iron for about 1-2 minutes on each side. Make sure the entire outside of the roast is a nice golden-brown color. This will help to lock in the flavor. 4. Transfer the meat to a large slow cooker and cover with any extra spices or oil that is left in the cast iron or on the plate after rubbing the roast. 5. Add onion, garlic, orange juice, beer, chicken stock, lime juice, cinnamon, and cloves to the slow cooker. 6. Cover and cook on high for 4-5 hours or low for 8-10 hours. You’ll know the meat is done when it falls off the bone and shreds easily with two forks. 7. Carefully transfer meat to a large sheet pan. 8. Shred and discard any bones, gristle, and veggies. Discard all but 1 cup of the cooking liquid. 9. Spread shredded meat in an even layer and drizzle it with the cooking liquid. 10. Broil meat on high for 3-5 minutes. The end result should be juicy shredded meat with charred and crispy ends. Seriously, don’t skip this step! It is so worth it! 11. Serve in Pica’s Mexican Taqueria (BronzeBest Mexican) homemade tortillas, and add toppings of your choice! E.g.: Vertical Harvest microgreens (Gold-Best Eco-Friendly Business), queso fresco, red onion, fresh cilantro, avocado and a squeeze of lime juice. Finish with tomatillo salsa. 12. Be sure to serve with plenty of local Mexicanstyle lagers like Heyzeus from Melvin Brewing (Silver-Best Brewery) or La Cerveza by Snake River Brewing (Bronze-Local Food or Drink Producer).

On Two Feet: Running Your Way Through Teton Trails By Shannon Sollitt

Trail running is one of the more grueling and rewarding activities you can do on two feet. The destinations are gratifying, yes, but they are just the cherry on top of a beautiful, blooming relationship with distance running. Whether you’re training for a race or just trying to go further in the mountains, the process is demanding, it is painful, but it is oh-so-satisfying. And there’s no better place to explore it than Jackson Hole. Its abundant alpine trails offer endless options for scenery, elevation gain, and distance. Of course, you’ll need the right shoes. Skinny Skis (Silver-Best Gear Shop) in downtown Jackson carries some of the top brands in the industry, from Hoka One One to Brooks to Asics and more. Once you’re appropriately laced up, the options for trail runs are limitless. Here are some local favorite trail runs to work into your schedule:

FOR SHORTER RUNS TAGGART LAKE
This is the perfect run to get your legs back under you after a long, snowy winter. The 3.8-mile round-trip trail takes you to an alpine lake with stunning views of the Teton Range. Climb 413 feet on the way up and run through lush forest and alpine meadows until you reach the lake, then cruise back to the trailhead after a

quick dip (if you’re brave), photo-op and snack.

FERRINS
The Cache Creek (Silver-Best Biking) trail system offers plenty of choose-your-ownadventure routes, but Ferrins is the most bang for your buck. It’s a 2.2-mile out-and-back with roughly 800 feet of elevation gain, or you can continue on into Wilson Canyon or to the Snow King summit via Skyline Trail. We recommend starting at Sink or Swim to add a little more distance and a fun, rolling traverse. It is a shared trail, so while hikers and runners technically have the right of way, always be aware of your surroundings and keep an eye out for mountain bikers.

MUNGER MOUNTAIN
Munger Mountain is one of the valley’s most colorful spots if you time it right! In spring and early summer, wildflowers dominate the landscape. Fall colors are equally as aweinspiring. But it’s a great run no matter when you do it. Be sure to stop and take in the views at the top of Wally’s World.

Hard work with a high reward. The Wildflower Trail at Jackson Hole Mountain Resort climbs from the base of JHMR to the top of the Bridger Gondola. It’s only 4 miles if you do

it one way, but climbs roughly 2,700 feet. You can, of course, run back down, or you could grab a beverage at Piste at the top of the gondola and enjoy a leisurely ride back down.

PHILLIP’S RIDGE
Most people do this trail from the Ski Lake trailhead on Teton Pass, and for good reason. But we’re training for toughness here! Start at the Phillips Canyon trailhead on Fish Creek Road and climb roughly 3,100 feet over 6 miles through lush forest and wildflowers. If you can coordinate, leave a car at the Ski Lake trailhead and shuttle back down. Or turn around and run it the other way!

JOSIE’S RIDGE
Just south of the Snow King summit sits Josie’s Ridge. Get to the top and back down in just 3.4 miles, or continue on to the Snow King summit for some cool ridgeline running. What the trail lacks in distance it makes up for in elevation. You’ll climb just over 1,200 feet and feel it every step of the way.
FOR DISTANCE CACHE TO GAME This route hosts a popular local trail race in the summer, SK so it’s no surprise that it also makes a perfect training run. As with most trails in this system, you’ll be sharing with mountain bikers, so be mindful. It’s also a pretty popular predator hangout, so bear spray is advised. Start at the Cache Creek trailhead and take your pick of Sidewalk or Hagen’s Trail, or just follow the double-track about 5 miles up to a little wooden bridge. From there, head right toward Game Creek and follow the beautiful, flowy singletrack down the ridgeline between Cache Creek and Game Creek drainages. You’ll come out at Game Creek south of town, so coordinate a shuttle. Toast your 10-mile run with a drink and burger at The Bird (Gold-Best Burger, Gold-Best Wings)! HERMITAGE POINT This run is perfect for days when you need to put in the miles, but could also use a rest. The approximate 10-mile loop carries you along Jackson Lake past swan ponds, waterfalls, and likely abundant wildlife in the heart of Grand Teton National Park. Take your time, enjoy the scenery, and cool down with a dip in the lake. This is one of the park’s more underrated trails.

DEATH CANYON TO TETON CANYON If you’re ready to truly push your running abilities in the mountains, Death Canyon to Teton Canyon is a classic Teton through-trail. It’s burly — 20 miles, 4,000-foot ascent and descent — but there are countless rewards to keep you going. Start at Death Canyon trailhead, ascend through Death Canyon, climb to Static Peak Divide (take a detour fo Static Peak summit for an extra peak bag), take Buck Mountain Pass and finally take Teton Trail 027 all the way down to the Teton Canyon trailhead. Prepare for high-alpine exposure, weather, and potential wildlife encounters. Leave a car at the Teton Canyon trailhead, and leave a celebratory beer or treat in it!

10 Must-Haves for Every Adventure By Rachel Levin
Whether you’re a visitor or a local, a novice or an outdoor aficionado, as you head out for a day hike, your backpack calls for the same staples. During summer months in Jackson, the weather makes no guarantees, and it’s incredibly important to be prepared for drastic changes in both temperature and weather. Along with appropriate layering and weather-appropriate gear, you want to be prepared with the emergency items you should never enter the backcountry without. On your way to the trailhead, grab a coffee and treat at Cowboy Coffee (Gold-Best Coffee Shop). Or, if you’re looking for the best breakfast sando in town, head to Sweet Cheeks Meats (Gold-Best Local Food or Drink Producer, Silver-Best Food Truck/Vendor, Gold-Best Caterer). BEFORE YOU HIT THE TRAIL, TRIPLE CHECK THAT YOU HAVE THE FOLLOWING TEN ITEMS IN YOUR DAYPACK.

SUN PROTECTION Another peril of hiking at altitude (remember: the elevation of the town of Jackson is over 6,200 feet), is the unforgiving strength of the sun. Whether the forecast predicts sun or not, load up on SPF. Face, ears, lips, neck, arms, hands … the sun doesn’t discriminate. Not only should you put on sunscreen before your hike, but throw it in your pack, along with a lip balm with SPF. In addition to your sunscreen, bring a hat with sun protection and sunglasses.

HEADLAMP Small but mighty, never enter the backcountry without a headlamp. Give it a test before you head out to make sure the batteries are fresh, and always bring extras! Even if you only plan to hike during daylight, bring a headlamp — just do it.

FIRST-AID KIT While you’re at Teton Mountaineering, stock up on an emergency first-aid kit. Buying a pre-assembled kit will save you some regrettable moments on the trail. Consider the size of your group and make sure the kit is sufficient. Along with your first-aid kit, pack moleskin for any blister problems you may encounter. Insect repellent is a must in the Tetons. Remember, anytime you remove anything from your first-aid kit make sure you write a note and refill provisions when you get home.

BEAR SPRAY Unique to hiking in the West, bear spray is a must. You can buy bear spray at most outdoor stores in town, like Teton Mountaineering or Skinny Skis (Silver-Best Gear Shop, BronzeBest Locally Owned Store), or you can rent it at Teton Backcountry Rentals. Make sure you read the instructions and carry the bear spray where it is readily accessible.
Jackson Whole Grocer has your back with snacks. Between the bulk section, the extensive choice of bars, and apples and nut butter packets, you can’t go wrong. Look for Kate’s Real Food snack bites or bars; you won’t regret it. Jerky and dried fruit pack a punch and weigh very little, which is key.
By now you know that weather in Jackson is unpredictable. So how do you dress appropriately? One word: layers. Stio (Gold-Best Clothing Store) is locally owned and locally inspired so their layers are sure to pass the JH test. The Pinion Down Pullover packs into itself and is a perfect layer to throw on for your summit sandwich. Every piece of clothing you’re wearing has the potential to impact your day, and your future self will thank you for avoiding cotton at all costs (down to your underwear). Opt for all moisture- wicking base layers.

LUNCH If you’re heading to Grand Teton National Park, a stop at Creekside Market & Deli (GoldBest Sloshie, Silver-Best Locally Owned Store) is much needed. With a solid sandwich menu and an above-average snack selection, everyone in your group will be happy. You can create your own deli sandwich or choose a local favorite: the turkey club. Note: On your way back to town post-hike, stop here for a sloshie (must be 21+ to partake).

WATER-PROOF GEAR Waterproof gear is a must. For starters, a waterproof shell will protect you from the elements, including wind. Make sure you have properly fitted water-repellent shoes. This hike shouldn’t be day one in your new kicks. Mud season is basically a year-round thing in Jackson, so grab some merino wool socks at Skinny Skis to keep your paws dry and happy!
You’re ready to hit the trails! Pack your daypack so you know where everything lives. That way you can quickly grab and go without unpacking your entire pack on the trail. Have fun and be safe!

Why I Don’t Ski By Andrew Munz

I DON’T SKI. I JUST DON’T. Normally, people don’t go around announcing what they don’t do. What a pointless, interminable endeavor. I literally don’t do so many things every single day. As humans, it’s challenging enough to tell our friends how we actually spend our days. Narrowing our hobbies down by a process of elimination, in turn, seems maddening. Near psychotic, even. Yet, having grown up in Jackson Hole, a town of self-proclaimed ski gods living atop their Mount Olympus, I find myself in an infinite wormhole of interactions that force me to sheepishly admit that I don’t do the thing that everyone is doing. For many folks, skiing is the very reason they live in Jackson Hole. It’s what brought them here and it’s what keeps them here. Therefore, once I confess that I both live in Jackson Hole and am completely uninterested in the practice of going up and down hills from Christmas to Easter, well, it tends to rile up the base. It’s not that I’ve never skied. My parents put me on skis early, and I got pretty good at it. When I was six, I was the top NASTAR racer in America in my age group and have the medals to show for it. Somewhere, anyway. But for some reason, the passion never stuck. No ski posters ever graced my bedroom walls. I couldn’t name more than a handful of professional skiers if you paid me. After high school, I even switched over to snowboarding for a couple of winters before losing interest altogether. In 2014, I sold my snowboard and never looked back. So the question arises: If I’m not taking advantage of Jackson Hole’s world-famous skiing culture, why am I here? The answer is complicated — a tangled bramble of reasons rooted in family, comfort, simplicity, beauty, pride, etc. As an actor and comedian, I’ve managed to carve out a bit of relevance in the community through my satirical play series, “I Can Ski Forever.” Over the course of four full-length
productions, complete with musical numbers, slapstick humor, and biting satire, I skewered Jackson Hole culture under the guise of comedy. I allowed locals to poke fun at themselves, while also commenting on things like alcoholism, income inequality, dog ownership responsibilities, etc. Studying improv at the iO Theatre and The Second City in Chicago, I learned the crucial lesson that good comedy is rooted in truth. The audience is an organism, an everevolving collective seeking a reason to connect, to laugh, to belong. The “Ski Forever” shows are full of characters unaware they are in a satire. Every decision they make, every word out of their mouth, is earnest. They are (or were) convinced their lives are genuinely better by simply existing in Jackson Hole, and are constantly searching for validation. As the production begins, the audience laughs at these strange caricatures of Jackson folk, but as these characters unapologetically maneuver through their individual motions, the audience begins to sympathize, and then (“hey, wait a second …”) relate to them. A man singing about having too much plaid in his closet rips open his plaid shirt to reveal yet another plaid shirt. A wealthy divorcee and her hench-cougars, all of whom live in log mansions, get roped into solving Jackson’s housing crisis for its poorest citizens. A dog-owning barista, who, in a previous scene, was tossing drinks back with a GoPro bro, is now lamenting about her endless

unexpected expenses. Not skiing allows me a lot more time for observation. My winters are spent creating work, oftentimes spending hours at my favorite table at Pearl Street Bagels, watching my “characters” walk into the shop. They clunk up to the counter in their ski or snowboard boots, many a carbon copy of those who came before and all those who would come after. Being one of only a few local comedians is both a blessing and a curse. While I’d enjoy collaborating with more artists, in true Wyoming spirit, I love being a pioneer. I’m addicted to pushing boundaries and jolting some sardonic energy into my less-than-
humble hometown. Thankfully, I have the backing of a supportive community to help me make that happen. I am now the first independent artist to ever rent and sell out the Center for the Arts, our largest venue in town. I am proud of that fact, but even more proud that it was achieved by someone local — a nerdy, overweight kid who pushed back and never gave up. Everyone in Jackson is looking for a reason to belong, to stay forever, to find some semblance of security and permanence. Much like a live audience, Jackson Hole’s populace is also an organism — splitting and morphing, absorbing free radicals, fighting off harmful bacteria, etc. As a result, I’ve felt a bit like a white blood cell flowing through Jackson’s veins, battling invasive ideas that threaten our quaint utopia. I’m desperate to help file down Jackson’s rough edges. I want it to live up to its potential. I want it to be utterly perfect. It’s ambitious, I know. But, if you’ll remember, my winter months are pretty open. Maybe if folks paired down their outdoor adventuring and dedicated more time to cultivating the community, we could really establish Jackson as a regional beacon of creativity and expression. It’ll never happen, but that’s totally OK. My passion is art. For others, it’s skiing, hiking, skijoring with their Malamutes, whatever else. It’s all valid. I want us to celebrate big ideas and throw tons of money at select projects that have the opportunity to change the course of the town’s trajectory, regardless of the medium. I want visitors’ jaws to drop as we show them what’s actually possible when a community empowers and funds its local creatives instead of spending local dollars on flying in “professionals” who collect their paycheck and fly back home. No, I don’t ski, but I am not anti-skiing. I pivoted my attention to an endeavor that made more sense to me. It doesn’t have to be an ultimatum, though. It is undeniably possible to create local art while simultaneously earning your abs in the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem. Thanks to Jackson’s loving and hungry audiences, I have been able to do so. Even if I don’t have the six pack to show for it.
