Lynvale
As the UK’s number one converter and distributor of adhesive tapes, Lynvale has over 35 years of experience in producing, processing and distributing technical adhesive tapes, foam tapes, flexible materials and gaskets for a range of industries, both nationally and internationally. The company was established in 2006 by husband and wife team January and Simon Baxendale. With over 20 years’ experience in the adhesive tape industry, Simon left a position of director to start up his own company, which has since gone from strength to strength. They now operate from a purpose built 8,500 ft² manufactory based in Haverhill, Suffolk, which is home to an impressive selection of the worlds most advanced converting machinery.

January Baxendale with team at Lynvale Adhesive Tapes functions of a normal sealing tape but expands on contact with heat (200°C), dramatically reducing the fire from spreading. In one independent test it even extinguished the fire by reducing oxygen flow to levels where the fire could not be sustained. The one stop, unique solution, was developed as technology before the application. However, this changes day by day as FS1000® is constantly moving into new markets driven by those in requirement of an all in one sealing solution.

Building worldwide on our strength Soil improvement specialist Cofra has recently developed a new GPS based logging system for vertical drain installation. PVD, also known as wick drains, are one of the most commonly used techniques to make soft compressible subsoil with a low bearing capacity constructible by accelerating the dissipation of excess pore pressure. The system registers, amongst others, the drain coordinates, push forces at selected intervals and maximum depth of the vertical drains. The system has proven itself to be of added value for both the contractor as well as the client/engineer and can be used on projects upon the clients request. Ben Fanner, Managing Director at Cofra
or levels of installation, limitations on height and other restrictions. It can also be used to install highly optimized vertical drain areas with complex geometries. The processed data can be used to:
As the GPS system is capable to load AutoCAD drawings and make these visible to the excavator operator, valuable information can be provided to them. These include the installation grid, locations of underground infrastructure, obstructions
Generate a depth map of the installation data. This can be used to map the bedrock or refusal layer at a 1 to 2m horizontal interval Map intersecting layers with a higher or lower required push force by generating a cross section of push force Check if the design is followed and where deviations from the design occur Evaluate the positions of the settlement markers Map obstructions Plot the push force at specific depths. As the GPS system is capable to load
AutoCAD drawings and make these visible to the excavator operator, valuable information can be provided to them. With this pre-marking of installation points at site is no longer needed. Furthermore site restrictions are always available for the excavator operator at his computer screen, thus contributing to limitation of operational risks on wick drain installation. The use of GPS based logging can provide additional information to the geotechnical engineer and the client, especially when stiff clay layers or sand layers are present. With the use of this system, push force profiles can be constructed which can be used to map geological features. It can also be used to generate an overview of the installation depths over the installation area. Both can help during the monitoring phase in the assessment of the lateral variations within the site, placement of the settlement markers, piezometers and ultimately limiting differential settlements by adjusting fill heights. This makes monitoring
more specific and reliable, thus optimizing operations and limiting operational risks in the consolidation phase In the building process the subsoil is always a factor of risk, no matter the number of soil investigation that has been done. Working with the GPS system in the critical wick drain installation phase contributes to limitation of risks as well as optimization of design. Introducing GPS is for Cofra one of many steps they have made over years in transforming wick drain installation worldwide to a professional level. Cofra is European market leader when it comes to the installation of vertical drainage and is continuously working on the development of new ground improvement techniques. As a contracting company, they operate in specific segments of civil engineering, namely ground improvement techniques and (environmentally protective) liner construction. The company’s priority is clearly on ground improvement solutions. For more information, visit the website at www.cofra.com

Rain Activ-Sustainable Drainage Solution Innovative new storm attenuation device promises more effective, better value source control for new build or retrofit
Rainwater Harvesting Ltd has developed an innovative SuDS device, providing an exciting new method for flood prevention. Rain Activ, provides ultra-low discharge source control for domestic homes with full auditability and minimal maintenance. The system uses a storage vessel between 800L and 15,000L, a selfcleaning filter and low discharge SuDS outlet. Water from the roof area is filtered using a 1,000 micron screen, discarding any leaves or debris into the overflow. If configured, once the clean, filtered water has entered the tank a proportion can be used for rainwater harvesting. During a storm event, the water level in the tank rises above the SuDS outlet which has an orifice 5-15mm depending on specification. Using such a small orifice provides low
discharge rates. For a typical domestic dwelling peak discharge can be as low as 0.05 L/sec. Rain Activ really provides drainage professionals with a powerful tool to reduce discharge rates from roof water to an absolute minimum. The product can cost-effectively, with low maintenance and full auditability deal with run off for smaller developments, greenfield sites and sites where low discharge values has been stipulated by planners. Rain Activ has been rigorously tested over the last 18 months with discharge data academically verified though theoretical, lab and real world data analysis. By using data alongside hydraulic modelling software MicroDrainage™ the system is designed bespoke to the client’s requirements.
Rain Activ sets to reduce costs to developers by heavily reducing or even eliminating secondary SuDS infrastructure such as balancing ponds and geocellular storage. In many cases this will provide additional land for the developer. From inception the system has been developed with a reduction of on-site costs as a critical factor. Above ground or shallow dig underground tanks with an installation depth of around 1m are used reducing spoil removal. Tanks arrives fully assembled ready to install. Crucially, maintenance is extremely low (typically one visual check of the filter per year) and normally the responsibility of the home owner. The system therefore also provides considerable year on year cost savings in comparison with traditional SuDS technologies. Utilising knowledge from a decade of market leadership in the sector, Rain Activ can also be specified as a dual purpose system to combine with rainwater harvesting.
4
As the filtration and tank are already in situ, creating a full domestic rainwater harvesting system is as simple as adding a pump and management unit. In the UK, a future integrated water management strategy should consider rainwater harvesting as an addition to new build properties. Rain Activ can collect 98% of roof run off so is an effective SuDS solution but as a dual system it provides developers with the ability to reduce mains water consumption by around 50%. As most of the infrastructure is already in place, the additional cost to add rainwater harvesting tends to be only a few hundred pounds. At the main site in Peterborough there is a functioning Rain Activ system with test facilities. If you would like a demonstration of the effectiveness of the new technology please call or email. Contact T +44 (0)1733 405111 info@suds-solutions.co.uk www.suds-solutions.co.uk

Product Innovation Award
Ideas, Engineers, Innovations Building Solutions UK is extremely proud to present HUESKER with its Product Innovation Award for their dedication to provide advanced Flood Protection Systems with their groundbreaking AQUABURG product. Established for over 150 years, HUESKER is a German company specialising in the manufacture of specialist textiles. Since the beginning, the company has continued to broaden its portfolio by making their own products using the advanced materials it produces. The UK office was opened in 1996, dealing primarily with geosynthetics and has recently acquired the agricultural and industrial range, which includes AQUABURG. Offering products to adapt to the inevitable climate change, the AQUABURG company has released this innovative product which is the latest development in re-usable, modular flood protection products. AQUABERG is a flexible, reusable, flood protection wall. It’s stored permanently at the required location, hidden in a concrete channel flush with the existing ground surface. It can be used as a stand-alone defence system or as part of another dyke or flood defence system. When there is a risk of flooding, the protective wall can be set up very rapidly by hand with no mechanical aides required. After use, it is stowed again in the concrete channel.
“AQUABURG is delivering a new dimension of mobile flood protection which sets new standards with new layout and numerous innovations,” commented Ross Murray, Business Area Manager at Huesker. “Speed, safety and economy all combine to form a true safeguard against floods. “Manual deployment of the system eliminates risk of ‘out of sight, out of mind’ whilst still being easy and rapid enough to be carried out in short notice with a non-critical amount of time and labour – unlike other systems that involve logistics and specialised personnel availability to erect. Unlike others, it is a very forgiving system. Should one of the supporting struts not be locked in correctly, or a couple of the hooks missed; then no problem. These little mistakes will not cause failure of the system as there is a large degree of redundancy designed into the product; its fool proof really.” As well as flood protection systems for the Aquaburg, HUESKER are also involved in agriculture, biogas, manure storage and many specialist textiles as well as being widely known for its quality range of geosynthetic products. “We are committed to offering viable and proven alternatives to conventional construction

methods by providing ingenious and sustainable solutions and applying state of the art and highly effective technical textiles,” Ross concluded. “As a global player, we aim to be the recognised market leader in all areas of our operations. At the same time we strive to continually improve the value of the company and what we offer to our customers. “HUESKER is the reliable and attractive partner for its customers, business friends and employees. Our top-class engineering solutions and more than 150 years of expertise in
manufacturing, coating and tailoring of technical textiles, along with our innovative power are the key to our success and the foundation of our long-standing customer relations. Product Innovation Award
Asbestos locating equipment in real time in every day and the lack of a portable, affordable solution so began researching the life-saving product. Following the successful completion of an EU funded R&D project, two ALERT models are now ready for rapid commercialization. A ‘Handheld’ model to provide a simple ‘yes/no’ indication of whether airborne asbestos fibres are present in the vicinity and a PRO version which provides the user a more detailed data set. The PRO model will be the first to market with plans for BETA testing sample units in early 2017 prior to commercial launch later that year.
Building Solutions UK is extremely proud to present Alert Technology Ltd with its highly prestigious and richly deserved Product Innovation Award for their Asbestos Locating Equipment. Asbestos is the biggest occupational killer in the world and according to HSE, causes 107,000 deaths a year worldwide with 5,000 in the UK alone – that’s one person every 5 minutes. Prior to the ban in the UK in 1999 and in many European companies in the early 2000s, asbestos was used in a great deal of buildings including homes and schools. When disturbed or degraded, asbestos will release toxic fibres into the air and unknowingly put all exposed to it at risk.
A category one human carcinogen, asbestos fibres when inhaled can lead to terminal illness such as Methothelioma, asbestosis and other related cancers, which can take up to 20 to 30 years to develop from initial exposure. To help reduce this risk, Alert Technology
Alan Archer, Managing Director (Middle) & Loretta King, Marketing Director (Right)
Ltd has developed the ground-breaking Asbestos ALERT technology, which monitors and warns in real time if asbestos fibres are airborne. The advanced solution offers users an invaluable first line of defence helping to prevent prolonged, inadvertent exposure to asbestos and is relevant to over 30 industry sectors including construction, demolition and hazardous waste industries. “There are other fibre monitors available but none that have the ability to distinguish between asbestos and non-asbestos fibres,” commented Director Loretta King. “ALERT offers the world’s first portable and affordable warning device that can actually distinguish between airborne asbestos and non-asbestos fibres in real-time.” “Providing an early warning reduces the risk and could help save lives as it allows people to instantly leave, reducing exposure and preventing cross contamination. ALERT can offer peace of mind and improved safety for workers and building occupants. An additional benefit is that can help save time and costs for the construction trades as once asbestos is suspected, works must stop and it can take a number of days to send samples to labs for analysis before the presence or absence of suspected asbestos can be confirmed,” says MD of Alert Technology, Alan Archer. The Asbestos ALERT works by measuring both the laser light scattering and magnetic
8
properties of individual respirable particles in the air at rates of hundreds of particles per second. From the light scattering it determines whether or not the particle is a respirable fibre, and then assesses how that fibre behaves in a strong magnetic field. Asbestos fibres are paramagnetic, meaning they are not normally magnetic but become so in a magnetic field and can therefore be rotated by that field. “We use this technique of light scattering to analyse single airborne fibres that are far too small to be seen with the naked eye,” explained Loretta. “After identifying the fibres, the device carries them in an airflow through a magnetic field, and uses light scattering again on the other side to tell if the fibres have aligned with the field. If they have, they are highly likely to be asbestos.
Alert Technology Ltd are planning to raise £2.5m over the next 2 years to help accelerate market launch of the two initial models, for global market expansion, R&D on new industry specific models and a fixed perimeter model capable of working at higher flow rates down to clearance levels. The company have a VC investor in place and are also currently running a crowdfunding campaign via Crowdcube – so you too could become a part of Alert Technology Ltd’s future. Details can be found on Alert Technology’s pitch which is now live until mid-November 2016: www.crowdcube/alert-tech.com For more information contact Alert Technology on +44 (0)1803 540154, email: info@asbestos-alert.com or visit the website at: www.asbestos-alert.com
“ALERT records this behaviour and uses it to make an assessment of the probability of asbestos being present, to a confidence level of 99%. It then warns the user of the risk of inadvertent exposure to airborne asbestos, allowing them to take immediate action to leave the vicinity or wear a suitable protective breathing mask. In back to back field trials with traditional testing methods ALERT performed 100% successfully detecting the presence, or lack of, as traditional filter testing.” Alert Technology Ltd is the spin off company of the Select Group which was established in 1988, specialising in the supply of products for the construction and plumbing trades. The company identified the danger that workers were unknowingly put

Product Innovation Award
Proven, secure, reliable Building Solutions UK is extremely pleased to present Geodesign Barriers with its highly prestigious Product Innovation Award for their outstanding flood protection systems. 20 years of flood fighting experience is what has led Geodesign Barriers to become renowned for their flexible and efficient flood barrier systems. The innovative and impressive company is well known for their temporary, mobile flood barrier system which is used by the Environment Agency, Local Authorities, Utility companies and private businesses to prevent the devastation of flooding. The company’s story began back in 1995, when the designer of the barrier and owner of the company, Sten-Magnus Kullberg started manufacturing a temporary flood barrier using metal frames and wooden EUR pallets, covered with plastic membrane, following his previous attempts to use air inflated tubes and water-filled tubes.
many times in real flood emergencies in the UK and globally, never failing in its duty. Our barriers have not just been tested in a testing facility – they have been out there, been used – in horrendous floods, saving people’s properties and businesses from being devastated.” This extensive flood barrier is a perfect option where a permanent solution is not possible due to economical or aesthetical reasons – or where it might take a long time before a permanent solution can materialise. Once the customer has purchased the barrier, Geodesign Barriers provide training on how to deploy the barrier for best practice as well as carrying out surveys for vulnerable sites and producing temporary barrier plans that the customers can use. Customer staff are trained to be able to improvise when using the barrier, in order for it to be deployed on an unknown site, in the middle of the night or on a wet and windy day. The company also help with audits of barrier material if needed.
Britt Warg, UK Manager at Geo Design Barriers have now become a framework partner with them. They have recently won a contract to provide temporary flood barriers for a scheme protecting the harbour area of Lowestoft. “We believe it is of vital importance to keep the flood water away from buildings wherever possible, by using a free standing flood barrier – thus not allowing the flood water to reach the walls,” Britt explained. “We also think the UK needs a national flood brigade – with local volunteers who could be trained in how to deploy temporary barriers and form an important part of the local resilience fora. More hands on deck – another body to count on in a flood emergency.”
Interestingly, the idea of using pallets came about when Sten-Magnus saw his children playing in the garden and wanting to build a little hut. They asked him for something they could use as a wall and he gave them a pallet that was lying around. He then realised that a pallet is a very strong element, utilised to take head loads across the world. He combined this with a strong metal structure and this is how it all started. Since then, the company began using aluminium sheets instead of pallets and later marine plywood boards. It is quite rare to see pallets used with the barrier today but this option is still available, should the customer require it. Today, operating from its HQ in Linköping Sweden with many agents around the world, Geodesign Barriers is well recognised for its world leading flood fighting system. “Simplicity, flexibility and the ability to adapt to local conditions is what attracts most customers to our advanced solution,” commented UK Manager, Britt Warg. “Not only this, the barrier can also be deployed in water, is very easy to understand and extremely quick to deploy due to it being flat-packed and in stackable crates, also allowing for easy storage.” Britt continues: “We have a very long and successful track record behind us as our system has been used
“Local knowledge is vital, and we need to make the most of it. Local people know where vulnerable people live, they know which roads to avoid and where it usually starts to flood in a village. If these local volunteers could drop their ‘day job’ and function as retained firemen or as RNLI do – and also have access to local depots with temporary products, a lot more could be achieved – a lot quicker. The technique is here – but we still keep using sandbags. Why not make use of temporary barriers instead and channel this local workforce into doing something more productive and effective?” The intelligent system has a long life span of over 50 years, allowing it to be used again and again and saving on life cost. The strong metal structure underneath the plastic also helps towards this – if there is a puncture on the plastic membrane, the whole barrier system won’t collapse.
“At Geodesign Barriers we work hard to provide customers with a complete package of services.
We don’t just deliver the barrier, we also help our customers to plan, do surveys and we take care of them afterwards, with training, audits and – whenever possible – assistance during real flood emergencies.” To promote these innovative flood systems, Geodesign Barriers attend many trade shows throughout the UK including Flood and Coast in Telford, Floodex in Peterborough, The Emergency Services Show in Birmingham and Flood Expo in London. “The recent shows have been very successful and busy,” Britt commented. “There was lots of good networking and we have met and discussed with many interested visitors to our stand.” “At the recent FloodExpo I was also speaking about the need for a national, voluntary Flood Brigade to an interested audience. We were awarded two awards during FloodExpo – Building Solutions’ ‘Best Company at Show review 2016’ and also ’10 years of BSI Kitemark’ – awarded by BSI. We have actually held the Kitemark since its launch, on 22 may 2003, so 13 years.” For more information contact Geodesign Barriers on: +44 (0)1793 538565, email: britt. warg@palletbarrier.com or visit the website at: www.geodesignbarriers.com
Recently introduced to the range is the new, lightweight and simplified barrier – EUR101 Steel Barrier. Designed to meet the need of large scale flooding operations, the system consists of a metal support, a metal sheet and a plastic membrane. The metal supports are held together by the steel sheet that is locked onto the supports. This makes the system quicker, lighter and more economical. The EUR101 has recently been purchased by the EA as part of their 12.5 M investment in temporary barriers to be used across the UK. Having worked closely with the EA since 2001, Geodesign Barriers

Japanese Knotweed Ltd: Removal & Eradication
Flood defence experts as there were thousands of people devastated with the floods. One of the first companies to be ISO 9001 and 14001 accredited, Crocodile’s team of dedicated professionals can help with paperwork for grants and explain what products are available to protect their homes and businesses and simply explain what help is available if they need it.
Over the two days, the event was well attended, with a wide range of delegates from the contamination industry. Japanese Knotweed Ltd received a good level of attendance at their stand, with most visitors aware of Japanese knotweed, but wanting to find out more about it. The origin and history of the plant was discussed, along with the problems that the plant can cause; loss of amenity use, contaminated ground, and structural damage. Of course the greatest interest was in how Japanese knotweed is controlled and eradicated. Herbicide treatments can be effective, but they don’t remove the rhizome from the ground, which remains contaminated. This means that if any disturbance to the site is planned (i.e. development) the knotweed will require excavation. There were quite a few questions raised about incineration of knotweed waste to avoid landfill disposal. Certainly knotweed stems can be incinerated (on site), but commercial eradication of knotweed still mainly relies on on-site burial or landfill burial of knotweed waste. Research and development is on-going into soil burning, and also into effective extraction of knotweed material from soils to allow for incineration (on site). As landfill resources become scarcer there will be greater pressure to use sustainable

The ‘Understanding and Remediating Japanese Knotweed’ CPD seminar was fully attended, with many standing at the back to get a place. The seminar provided an insight into knotweed and how to deal with it, including some case studies. There were a number of questions at the end from delegates in various fields of work, showing that knotweed has a wide impact. T +44 (0)333 2414 413 info@knotweed.co.uk www.japaneseknotweed.co.uk

Vikoma International The Flood Expo show 2016 was highly successful for Vikoma International. Launching the new range of flood barriers at the show created a large amount of interest in our Flood Control Solutions with a high footfall of visitors to our stand.
Amari Austria has participated for the first time as exhibitor at the Flood Expo. The show was very interesting: in two days we were able to make promising contacts and gained invaluable insights into the trends in this particular market. Suppliers and visitors not only from the UK, but also from other countries were present at the show.
Thanks to our internal optimised processes we are able to guarantee the delivery of our systems within one week.
At the exhibition it was evident that there are only few suppliers of massive flood protection systems which can bridge big wingspread and are applicable for an effective landscape protection. We are confident that there are excellent opportunities for our flood protection systems in this market.
Another requirement that emerged as particularly important to customers is the ability to offer and sell certified products. Our flood protection systems have been tested by the European Flood Protection Organisation in matters of static, tightness, mounting time and storage: all systems have been awarded the Seal of Quality.
We experienced overwhelmingly positive reactions from all visitors at our stand towards our products in matter of quality, reliability and innovation. In conversations with people in different positions and business area, one factor stood out as most essential and decisive: short delivery time.
Our target is to find new distributors and sales partners for our flood protection systems in the UK and other countries. flood-defence@amari.at www.amari-hochwasser.at
Generating further interest was the live demo of our Flood Guardian Barrier which attracted a wide range of visitors. Visitors were able to see the life size barrier and gain further understanding in its technical specifications including its ability to be used in both short with a unique anchoring system or long lengths with versatility to deflect water from a multitude of areas. Furthermore they could see how quick it is to assemble and feel the durability of the material. In addition to the Flood Guardian there was a demonstration of our unique, portable wet and dry Minivac systems which is ideal to reach isolated and difficult to reach areas and used for post flood clean-up including debris, sludge as well as spills. This gave visitors a great insight
into the variety of uses for the system and its functionality as well as the opportunity to try the system and see how easy it is to dismantle and hand carry to locations. Vikoma were also very pleased to be short listed as a finalist for the Flood Innovation Award 2016, a huge credit to the company. T +44 (0)1983 200560 sales@vikoma.com www.vikoma.com

Understanding how the latest advances in dealing with water damaged properties can reduce recovery times, and greatly improve the customer experience, is important for everyone involved in the process and of particular value to builders and tradespeople providing reinstatement services. For a property owner, awareness of what they can expect from professional contractors assists them in coming to terms with the potential disruption and also makes it easier to question and fend off rogue traders. The BDMA works in collaboration with many different sectors to ensure
better understanding between the various parties responding to property damage, and provides education and qualifications in recovery and restoration procedures. In addition to training for practitioners, builders, claims handlers, insurers and loss adjusters, we also provide courses related to specific issues that on-site

The latest addition to our training programme, for example, deals with Supporting Children & Young People after Flooding. Anyone with children will understand that their way of dealing with a difficult situation is very different to an adult’s response, and the trauma they experience after being flooded is now known to be particularly severe. This new course, based on research by Lancaster University and Save the Children, allows participants to hear children’s views for themselves and explore how they can adapt their procedures to reduce the impact on affected young people. The devastating storms and floods that hit the North during Christmas 2015 are what sparked the National Flood Resilience Review. With the aim to see what lessons could be learnt, the review established the importance of installing temporary flood barriers across the UK. The government, through the Environment Agency, has now significantly increased their stock of temporary barriers.
The Floodex exhibition captured a broad spectrum of exhibitors, thus bringing in an equally diverse selection of visitors. This effect was strengthened by the presence of the Contamination Expo and Marine & Coastal Engineering Expo within the same hall which also provided interesting opportunities for networking with exhibitors from other industries.
Having worked closely with the EA since 2001, Geodesign Barriers have now officially become an EA framework partner and are supplying more temporary barriers for national deployment. Using water to control flooding
The system consists of two PVC tubes laid side by side which are permanently joined together to form a flood barrier that can hold back up to 1,900mm of water. It is initially inflated, easily moved into the desired position and subsequently filled with water from a nearby water source or flood water – via a water pump.
In addition, Adler & Allan provides a range of services that may be required following a flooding incident; spill response and clean-up, site decontamination, water and ground remediation, fuel testing and fuel polishing.
Geodesign Barriers become an EA framework partner
This was the first time NETZSCH Pumps & Systems have exhibited at Floodex and we came well prepared with our stand featuring products from each of our three flood-related ranges.
The Beaver Barrier Protection System from Geoline has frequently proven its worth in many emergency situations. Benefitting from fast assembly, easy installation and flexibility, the innovative flood barrier helps to prevent or at least reduce storm and flood damage and economic costs.

Flood Expo Review 2016
Environmental Innovations success at The Flood Expo 2016 The Flood Expo 2016 was hailed a success for Environmental Innovations Ltd after engaging with Local Authorities, Environmental Agencies, Community Flood Groups and Industry Delegates. Offering remote and wireless sensors and critical communication systems for Flooding, Water Levels, Sewer Levels, and Environmental Monitoring, the exhibition enabled gave the opportunity to display some of the sensor we manufacture and how we integrate these into systems utilising our low powered radio links. Local authorities sought solutions for Highways Flooding which is obviously a safety issue. Real-time monitoring means reaction times to the issues can be cut, reducing road traffic incidents, and maintaining a healthy drainage network. Environmental Agencies were keen to review their borehole monitoring, for groundwater level changes, along with general river level monitoring, and rainfall modelling by way of rain gauges. Both types of client need wide area or regional solutions, all of which can be achieve using our
OFCOM licenced radio solutions. This will deliver a dedicated method of communication, rather than relying on the GSM network, provided by third party companies, who will refuse to provide service level agreements. Industry was looking for sewer level monitoring, and blocked sewer detection sensors, to avoid and mitigate flood risk, whether this was from internal issues like a blocked sewer, or external issues like rivers running parallel to their site. Again, monitoring these issues can provide business continuity, or reactive response measures appropriate to the situation. T +44 (0)1279 600440 www.environmental-innovations. co.uk

Expert Solutions for decontamination The two days of the Contamination Expo flew by for the team from SMH as they introduced visitors to our expert solutions for decontamination across a range of hazards and industries, from asbestos to wood dust, construction to demolition. The range of products we had on display – air and water movement and filtration units, H-type wet/dry vacuum cleaners, and air pressure monitors – although far from our full offering, proved of real interest to showgoers of all kinds, while representatives from our training and consultancy business, SMH Services, were kept busy fielding enquiries about our expert training, including UKATA, IATP and BOHS approved asbestos courses, and the technical support they can offer, such as site audits and consultancy.
However, the real star of the show was the Fibrecheck FC6, named winner of the Asbestos Innovation Award 2016. The judges were unanimous in their praise of the FC6, which delivers effective realtime measurement of respirable dust and fibres in a robust, compact and – critically – affordable unit. The Revolutionary Energy Saving Product that saves up to 35% on Heating Costs S.O.R Technologies have brought to the market the revolutionary energy saving product the Vortex Energy Saver. With 2 years of independent testing, the Vortex Energy Saver has proven to reduce energy consumption of a heating system by up to 35%! This is achieved by removing the dissolved Oxygen in a heating system down below an inert level which no other deaerator on the market is able to achieve. This improves the properties of the water in the heating system causing it to heat up quicker using less energy. In addition to substantial energy savings, removing the dissolved Oxygen to an inert level will also help prevent future corrosion and extend the life of the heating system. Through its patented design the Vortex Energy Saver is unique in the market being the only product that removes the dissolved Oxygen down to an inert level. The Vortex Energy Saver is now widely used by many Housing Associations, Universities and consumers with a range of case studies available on the product website: www.vortexenergysaver.com. than a much heavier oxy acetylene set, and the cable tray we ran the pipework on was already populated with cables so we were at no risk of damaging existing works.
But that’s what is happening with ZoomLock, the new braze-free fittings system for copper tubes, recently introduced into the UK by air conditioning and ventilation distributor Greenmill. Installers are clamouring to try the product, which uses a specially-designed crimping tool to join copper tubes together, leaving clean joints which have been proven under rigorous testing to be leak proof. “It’s such a simple system that when installers get their hands on it and try it out, they have no hesitation in buying. It’s so cost-effective, it quickly pays for itself,” said Bruce Miller, Managing Director of suppliers Greenmill. With ZoomLock, no welding, gas, nitrogen purging, fire spotters or hot work permits are needed. It gives you more flexibility in terms of where and when you can work. Tests have shown it cuts time and labour required for a job by up to half, improving productivity and profitability. It’s the time-saving element which appeals to Simon Boley, from DAQS Air Conditioning, “And time is money! If we don’t have to spend an

You don’t have to wait for anything to heat up or cool down with ZoomLock you’re ready to start straight away.” “I’d go so far as saying that ZoomLock is revolutionary,” said Paul Dougan from Independent Air Conditioning. “We’ve recently done a job in eight days using ZoomLock which previously would have taken 12 using the traditional brazing method. “The pipework was four metres off the floor so it was safer to work with the ZoomLock tool

Pulsar lights the way for Bowman Chilled Stores

Bowman Chilled Stores in Spalding is a family run business which has been established for over 50 years. Over the years Mr and Mrs Bowman had a strong influence in large scale horticulture ranging from daffodils and vegetables to cereals. The short lifespan of the existing 100 Metal Halide fittings were costing £1.200 a year to maintain and led to reduced light levels and production stoppages when light servicing and replacement were taking place. Pulsar’s maintenance free LED lighting upgrade eradicated all of these issues and their associated costs.
The final scheme consisted of 104 x UniBay130W fittings with 80 CRI at 5,000K including G90 glare control optics. The UniBay130 has multiple fixing options. Pulsar’s lights reduced energy consumption by 70% and delivered a saving of £29,757 per year.

The Ultimate Space-Saver New homes in England are the smallest in Europe. As families have to squeeze themselves into a house or apartment they can afford to live in, compromises have to be made. Often these are in the bedrooms. UK Housing Standards state that the minimum size of a single bedroom has to have a floor area of at least 7.5m2 and is at least 2.15m wide. Whilst that provides ample room for young children who spend little time awake in their bedroom, the problem really comes when the children become teenagers. With no space for a desk or adequate storage they are forced to study and socialise elsewhere in the already cramped home. A similar problem faces mature couples who have decided to downsize, perhaps to help their children progress up the housing ladder. They want a private room such as a study or hobby room, yet they also need an occasional guest room for visiting family. Space-saving products are therefore inevitably in increasing demand. One of the most unique and ingenious of these is the StudyBed. As seen on many UK TV Programmes, including George Clarke’s Amazing Spaces, it can transform a small room. The StudyBed incorporates a bed and a
desk in the same footprint and, because everything stays in place, thanks to a patented mechanism, it can be converted from one to the other in a few seconds. So, a standard single bed AND a very large desk fit into a space of only 2.13m2. The standard double StudyBed fits into an area of just 3.17m2. Declaration of performance is key to making the right Ironmongery Choice Every CE marked product under the Construction Products Regulation must have a Declaration of Performance (DoP) and relevant test data behind it. But, says Luke Piper, Managing Director at architectural ironmongers BJ Waller, not everyone in the industry is aware of the importance of DoPs. “We have had conversations with many architects where they don’t have much knowledge about DoPs, if any at all. Yet it’s impossible for an architect to have confidence in the hardware package specified for a project without this information. DoPs are a goldmine of information that provides the details to ensure each product will achieve the performance criteria required, making each product fit for purpose for your project.” “It’s vital that architects make the right choices when choosing their ironmongery partners and specifying architectural ironmongery. There can be a number of products, sometimes from various manufacturers, that make up a complete ironmongery package for a project. The test data and DoPs give architects the right information to specify the right
combination of components with confidence.” “Finding this information can be time consuming for architects. BJ Waller is familiar with the DoP and test data for every product in its portfolio, in order to best assist its customers.” “This is why our knowledge of products and their DoPs is a real benefit to architects and specifiers. We can advise exactly what hardware is best for the specification. We guide architects through the options, to make sure each product is right for your project.” T +44 (0)1353 647111 sales@bjwaller.co.uk www.bjwaller.co.uk

Save floor space, go vertical! Vertical storage (toast racks) in manufacturing and distribution can be a valuable asset in creating space efficient work-areas. High volumes of inventory can be stored efficiently, even in sensitive environments where it is important to meet rigorous standards. For example in the pharmaceutical, health and beauty care sectors. Toast Racks are an innovative storage solution that can recover up to 80% of the available floor space currently occupied by horizontal storage. Delicate items designed for vertical positioning are most effectively stored and transported using mobile toast racks. Vertical storage will not only reduce damage and eliminate wasted space, but with the addition of roller tracks at the base; provide easy mobility, reduce over-reaching and give staff access to products with minimal effort. Toast racks can be assembled

Helios takes Shape in the Cotswolds Alumen, the leading SMART and Schueco aluminium fabricator, is getting creative with its recently launched range of rooflights by manufacturing a unique octagon rooflight from its Helios range. Alan Robinson, Alumen’s Managing Director says, “We have enjoyed great success with the new rooflight range. Our standard sizes are moving well through the website and we are getting a lot of enquiries for something a bit different and unique. As an experienced aluminium fabricator, with a heritage in manufacturing a wide range of products, we love a challenge and this bespoke request gave us the perfect chance to test the capabilities of the Helios design. “The Helios is the contemporary square rooflight with a raised chamfered edge. Available as fixed or with a smooth chain operated manual or electric opener, the options on size and shape are endless – as demonstrated in this unique project. This project required us to fabricate the rooflight into an octagon shape to form the centre of
the roof in a garden pavilion. The pavilion, part of a hand carved Cotswold stone building in a courtyard of outbuildings, will be used to hold chamber music concerts amongst other events. “The rooflight itself was large spanning 2,387mm and weighing nearly 200kg. It had to be lifted into place using glass lifters and a crane, and despite the unpredictable weather we have been experiencing, was installed according to plan.” For more information on this project and the full range of rooflight products please visit: www.alumen.co.uk
Raising the roof on industry standards Run by the National Federation of Roofing Contractors Limited (NFRC), is the Competent Person Scheme dedicated to compliant roof refurbishment. Their quality services allow professional roofing contractors to selfcertify that their roof refurbishment work complies with Building Regulations within England and Wales. The scheme encompasses all roofing types for domestic, industrial and commercial properties and is open to all roofing contractors to apply. All those that work in the roofing sector from a one man band to large construction organisations can become a member as well as those who are already registered to a main contractor. The main benefit to roofers of being a member of CompetentRoofer is that there is no need to wait for a surveyor from the Local Authority to inspect the work before it can be signed off as complete. All the work can be done there and then as full training is provided on the selfcertifying system. “Many people do not understand what the Building Regulations are or what they mean, and some believe they are optional,” commented Marketing Co-ordinator Gary Plahe. “But those who do not abide by the requirements of the Building Regulations face the possibility of a hefty fine and also the cost of having
the work put right if it does not meet requirements. “We work with customers to ensure they fully understand these regulations as well as advise them on how to comply with them. Once an application has been received a series of checks are carried out followed by an audit of site and quality management procedures, technical competence and health and safety practices, and an on-site inspection of work in progress. Members are then fully vetted and inspected a minimum of twice per year. “Customers who choose to work with one of our members are guaranteed to be getting a trusted, reliable and quality service. A ten year insurancebacked guarantee is included with notification of roof refurbishment works up to a value of £50,000 where the building height is four storeys or less. It is also available for commercial and insurance works.” CompetentRoofer now offers free training for all registered members under the British standard BSW5534 and provides a copy of standards. They are currently developing a Basic Competence Programme (BDP) which is due to be launched later this year as well as a British Building Cladding programme. Plug and Play LED lighting Timeguard is proud to introduce the NIGHTeye Plus range which takes the design and fuctionality of slimline driverless LED lighting to unprecedented new levels.
Electraflow Plus is available in two models: the Electraflow Plus Cartridge and the Electraflow Plus Combi, which can be easily configured to accommodate cartridges and sachets, allowing for quick and efficient dispensing.
Choose your floodlight, match it to the plug in wiring block with your choice of manual or integrated automatic photocell or PIR switching and you’re good to go. Thin and beautiful – and tough Maximising the field of illumination is important when using LEDs for flood lights and, Timeguard’s prismatic lenses do just that. The reflector plates on these new lights are made of tough polycarbonate (the type of material you could throw a brick at) and you’ll notice that there is no clear glass window: the recessed reflector and diode lens are used to create new beautiful sleek lines. There will be no rusting with the polycarbonate plate front lenses and reflector plates: they’ll look good for years. The all-white models, with white casing and matching white reflector plates will hardly be seen when mounted on a white soffit board. Reliability Branded quality is an assurance that
Cox Electraflow Plus The Cox Electraflow, already one of the industry’s most successful, professional applicators, moves on to the next level with the Electraflow Plus. Now, with a lighter 18V lithium-ion battery, the Electraflow Plus has even more power. Its ergonomic design ensures that the Electraflow Plus provides the professional user with a perfectly balanced tool, capable of smoothly dispensing controlled beads of urethanes and other high-viscosity sealants and adhesives.
The new, more powerful Cox Electraflow Plus provides: 3.5kN of force for higher viscosity materials 18V Li-Ion battery for greater power and short recharge time (30 minutes for full charge) Speed rack of maximum 8mm/sec for higher material output Speed sensitive trigger to assist less experienced operators to bead into and around corners New soft touch rubber grips to improve operator comfort and tool support on inclined surfaces Variable 9 speed power dial to set application speed and control the rate of material output Designed and manufactured in the UK for guaranteed excellent quality Bespoke control board programmes
corners have not been cut on the circuitry. Driverless or not, LEDs generate a lot of heat on start-up with the inrush current. The 30,000+ hour life expectancies we all have of LED lighting these days are unlikely to be met if the circuitry is consistently overheating. So any design needs to incorporate a cooling mechanism. If the back’s smooth, with no cooling fins, then are you totally sure the product is designed to eliminate heat build-up. Perhaps it’s a case of buyer beware! Yu can be sure that Timeguard’s PIRs have been tested and rated specifically for use with the LED – they too have to cope with inrush currents. Easy installation Timeguard seems to have this covered. Full size wiring terminals that are easy to terminate your cables into and a ‘loop out’ to other luminaires on the circuit. The cover has captive screws and there are two self-locking glands (supplied) designed specifically to maintain weather proofing for UK twin-and-earth cable. Even the wall brackets help with their easy hang design. It all adds up to simplicity for the installer, Flexibility and extendibility NIGHTeye plus is offered in black or white designs, with outputs of 10W (650L), 20W (1,400L), 30W (2,050L) and 50W (3,600L). The plug-in PIR sensor and Photocell units

COX Dose Control Cordless Dispenser Technology from Sulzer Mixpac (UK) Ltd
With over 50 years’ experience in manufacturing dispensers for single and dual component materials, the COX brand has stayed at the forefront of the industry by responding to changes in sealing and adhesive technology. Collaboration with major chemical suppliers has enabled us as a manufacturer to develop innovative dispensing systems to meet changing demands. Dual component chemical anchoring systems are now well established in the construction industry with multiple choices for architects and builders to select from; most of these systems rely on standard dispensing tools developed to suit the common packaging systems. With increasing use of these expensive materials, it is important to ensure the correct volume of material is used for each fixing. An insufficient amount and the anchor may not meet the design specification, ultimately compromising the installation with possible safety consequences. On the other hand, over application is wasteful and increases the

installation cost for the contractor. Recent developments in batterypowered single and dual component dispensers from Sulzer Mixpac (UK) Ltd include optional dose control embedded in the dispensing software. This new COX brand system delivers a consistent volume of chemical anchor each time the trigger is activated whilst still providing full speed control for precise application. A dose dial provides a range of adjustment to meet the application requirements. These powerful battery applicators give the user full portability onsite, enabling high productivity improvements with up to 80 cartridges possible between battery charges. www.sulzer.com/en

APC Architectural Mouldings: When reliability matters
IMI Hydronic Engineering has created a brand new solution to the problems caused by inaccurate control technology in heating or cooling systems. Uncomfortable temperature oscillations, noisy systems, and expensive and unsustainable energy bills are all a thing of the past with the new TA-Modulator – a highly precise pressure independent balancing and control valve – in conjunction with a range of fully digitally configurable actuators TA-Slider. Together, their revolutionary technology delivers the exact amount of energy to ensure perfect comfort and reduced energy costs. Temperature fluctuations and high energy consumption are often caused by oversized or undersized control valves, overflows or underflows, incorrectly set up pumps, and inadequate control valves that only deliver the necessary flow to reach the desired temperature and keep it stable. The results can have alarming effects on energy consumption – overheating by just one degree Celsius in winter increases the annual energy consumption by 6% to 11%. The figures for cooling systems are even more dramatic: one degree lower than necessary equates to a 12% to 18% increase in energy costs. Energy demand and flow rate bear no linear relationship for cooling and heating coils. A flow rate of just 20% is required for an output of around
50%. Most air-conditioning systems are oversized to withstand a few peak days in the year – a flow rate of 100% is therefore only required in rare cases and so HVAC coils operate at a flow of just 25% for the majority of the year. The TA Modulator from IMI has been designed using a valve with a uniquely shaped, patent-pending EQM characteristic. This allows it to accurately make the minimal corrections to the flow to keep the desired temperature stable. The valve provides a 600% larger working stroke than linear valves at the same flow rate, giving it an outstanding ability to control the flow almost to zero value. The TA-Modulator from IMI is a Pressure Independent Balancing and Control Valve (PIBCV). The built-in pressure controller protects the valve against pressure fluctuations in the installation, keeps the temperature control highly stable, and minimises the number of actuator movements, prolonging its longevity. It also protects the installation against overflows, provides automatic hydronic balancing, simplifies commissioning and saves pumping costs up to 40%. In contrast to most competitor products the TA-Modulator is able to measure both the pressure and the true flow through the valve. It is therefore easier to correctly adjust the pumps in order to minimize energy costs or to locate and rectify any errors or malfunctions in the entire system.
