Do You Need a Tree Report from a Qualified Arborist? When developing a site, the focus is often on the buildings, access and parking, the green space outside can easily be overlooked. Trees can be regarded as a problem, something to avoid or remove at the earliest stage. However, with care, they can enhance many developments. The pre-development assessment (Tree Constraints Plan) identifies which trees are most suitable for retention, and how they can enhance the site. This includes screening and those which could provide focal points. Established trees provide maturity to a site which can otherwise seem harsh and new. Tree retention needs to be carefully considered. The design and layout of the development should reflect both the needs of the trees being retained and those of future residents. As a tree officer, I guided many applications with trees. One where I was not involved incorporated a mature oak tree in to the rear garden of a new home. It dominated the setting and did not enhance the setting, making the property a less attractive home. With care, this can be avoided.

Bespoke Joinery from Edinburgh to Aberdeen Building Solutions UK is incredibly proud to present Bill Pitt Manufacturing Joinery Ltd with its richly deserved Commitment to Excellence profile. The expert in customisable and cost-effective joinery, which is based in Kirriemuir, Scotland, has been facilitating the requirements of homes and businesses ever since its establishment in 1998. The company was founded by Bill Pitt, who with 35 years of industry experience was the most ideal candidate to start up such a specialist woodworking organisation. It was Bill’s background as an employee at a joiner’s workshop and a timber sales representative that inspired the entrepreneurial individual to pursue his dream of setting up his own business. The knowledge he had gained during this time – and feedback from customers who noticed his potential – encouraged Bill to take the necessary steps to form Bill Pitt Joinery in response to the gap in the market he had discovered. Following market research it became apparent that there was a growing need for bespoke joinery services, so Bill began to build the business, which started out as just himself and an apprentice. After moving workshops three times the group – which now

Commitment to Excellence

Quality, advanced brickmaking Building Solutions UK is proud to present its highly prestigious and richly deserved Commitment to Excellence profile to The Bulmer Brick and Tile Company. Sitting as it does on deep deposits of London Bed clay, our site has been a source for brick and tile making since at least the fifteenth century. By the nineteenth century it was making and supplying its wares to quality buildings and by way of the River Stour, finding outlets to London. Today our work is closely associated with the restoration and conservation of buildings countrywide; the emphasis being on producing bricks to match the original in all aspects, each brick and special being hand made from purpose made moulds, fired in one of our coal fired, down draught kilns that can create a myriad of colours and textures so necessary when matching early examples of brick. Our significant

collection of purpose made moulds have all been made on site, from drawings, samples or just a photograph and measurements; some copings turning the scales at over fifty kilograms, requiring at least two makers to fill the mould before then turning out the piece.

embellishments not seen before that demonstrated their wealth and power. The revival of this technique in the early nineteenth century with the coming of the ‘Gothic’ age saw its use over wide areas, particularly in civic buildings, banks, schools churches, smart town houses and shops. Amongst our moulds

Our clay seams offer a number of differing clays able to cater for the widening range we provide. We are able to dig clay that once ‘washed’ produces the highest quality red ‘Rubbers’ that match originals made within three miles of our site and supplied to St Pancras Station for its erection between 1868 – 1874. We were proud and delighted not only to make the Rubbers, but cut and rub them, supplying them to site ready to lay when St Pancras Station underwent it’s facelift in order to become the terminal for the Eurostar train service.

today, we still number many originals made and carved in the 1880’s expressly for this market and now coming out of retirement to restore and repair examples suffering the ravages of time. The clays fulfill less well known roles as pozzulans when mixed in lime mortar,

as clay lump and as daub when creating wattle & daub, reinforcing the ties with our past and their importance to our world today. T +44 (0)1787 269232 bbt@bulmerbrickandtile.co.uk www.bulmerbrickandtile.co.uk

Bulmer Brick and Tile Company is a long established family business on the site of a brick making yard dating back centuries. Bulmer bricks are made from the finest London Clays, dug continually from our own clay seams since Tudor times. All our bricks are entirely hand made using traditional methods. We specialise in restoration and conservation of old buildings; working closely with architects and contractors to produce our facing brick to the specification required for your particular building. Although we aim to have a stock of the more common sizes, dimensions and texture are made to order, so that each building receives the correct brick for the work. The kilns are unique coal fired down-draught kilns, loaded, unloaded and fired by hand in a long and labourious process, ensuring each and every brick has had our personal attention. No artificial colours, tints or dyes are used in our process. The beautiful range of colours from orange to dark red and purple comes purely from the firing process, just as it would have been over the centuries. We make a huge variety of brick specials, including terracotta, plinths, squints, decorative chimney bricks, string course bricks and over 500 different types of coping which increases on a weekly basis. All the specials are moulded from wooden moulds, which are made in our own carpentry workshop.

By contrast, we have continued to supply a wide range of sizes and types to restore and conserve Henry VIII’s grand Palace at Hampton Court, a floor at Greenwich and bricks to numerous of his ‘houses’ around the countryside. His courtiers were to take up his love of building, and for a brief moment decorated their splendid buildings with the ‘new’ material, ‘Terracotta.’ For this they required the assistance of foreign craftsmen, believed to be either Italian or French, whose skills gave brickwork

We also have a range of garden edging and decorative plaques depicting floral patterns, some of which are made from original moulds over 100 years old. We have our own brick cutting workshop where we can create cut and rubbed arches, either loose or on steel lintels ready to lift into position, and can cut specials or cut and bond from customer supplied material. Our own clay is prepared by a variety of methods to produce a BBT Fully Washed Rubber for use in fine Georgian Rubbed work and in other grades that can be easily cut and rubbed on site if required.
