‘IVY’ got a good feeling about this… After another super turnout at the recent Greenbuild EXPO in Manchester, we were delighted with the interest in our products. Our Ivy Green Screens were a big focal point again this year, they were used as area dividers and backgrounds throughout the show, which allowed attendees to get up close and see the product in its raw form.

Specialists in packaging for the Construction and Building Industry The increase in new homes being built has seen a significant demand in packaging for the building and construction industry. According to the NHBC there has been an increase of 6% in overall new home completions over the last 3 months, with government figures showing that newbuild homes, being started and finished in England are at their highest level since 2008. This surge will naturally have a direct impact on the increase in demand on suppliers to this industry. This increase in new homes being built not only benefits

home builders directly, but also on the wider supply chain, good examples being Kitchen and Bathroom manufacturers, an industry that historically requires packaging solutions for their products. Packaging in these industries is key to the transport, protection and storage of goods and materials, items which are typically high value and can see unwanted levels of damages and returns if not well protected. Kite Packaging are specialists in supplying packaging for the construction and building industry, offering a wide range of solutions

to ensure the protection of finished products and who understand the importance of innovation in the industry. Award winning Knee Pads save injury, time and money An award winning, non-foam based, pocketed safety kneepad which maintains its maximum cushioning effect throughout consecutive or prolonged use, “Can help prevent up to 6 months down time and subsequent loss of earnings through knee injury in the workplace.” The claim comes from Cliff Lockyer, CEO of Redbacks Cushioning Limited, the Daventry, Northamptonshire based manufacturers of the UK designed, ‘Redbacks’ cushioning kneepads which are winners of SATRA’s ‘Best Innovation in Occupational PPE Award’ and have been nominated as ‘top product’ contenders by leading UK trade media. “It is vital to have the correct knee protection in the workplace in order to avoid long-term pain and discomfort and prevent expensive down time loss of earnings” says Lockyer.

“Based on the fact that there are currently over 104,000 annually registered knee replacement operations in the UK alone, 50% of which are accredited to occupational hazards, in the next 10 years the total figure will exceed over a million people in the UK, many of whom will have damaged knees through inadequate protection whilst kneeling.” The kneepads feature a soft and flexible TPE (Thermo Plastic Elastomer) leafspring set within a unique honeycomb matrix. This unique ‘Redbacks Cushioning Technology’ distributes body weight evenly, elevating the knees to relieve back pain and reduce pressure on knee, leg, ankle and foot joints, whilst minimising the risk of possible injury from sharp or penetrating objects. Floodex Show Review 2016

Flood Defence, WLM and Drainage The first Floodex, held at Peterborough Arena, was a huge success with many exhibitors already committed to exhibiting again in 2017. Floodex was launched as a trade event for flood defence and the water level management (WLM) sector looking at flood defence, prevention, mitigation and drainage. But Floodex is not just about flood prevention, but covers WLM holistically, as many believe an integrated approach is needed to future proof Great Britain against the devastating effects of large scale flooding

An extraordinary 72% of our visitors, from the pre-registration questions, stated that they either influenced or made the final purchasing decisions. This underlined how good the decision has been to partner with the Association of Drainage Authorities, who made a valuable contribution in delivering an audience that was an amazing 39% Internal Drainage Boards and Local Authorities, 19% from engineering and contracting with another 11% coming from construction.

Jon Irwin, event director said “If you weren’t one of the Floodex exhibitors, you missed a very good opportunity and, as we are not planning to expand the exhibitor base, only the number of qualified visitors, our exhibitors can look forward to an even better 2017”. He went on to say “The idea behind launching Floodex, was to deliver an event that was strictly trade and a major networking opportunity for the industry” adding “In this regard, it was a major success and will improve as the word spreads; the figures speak for themselves,”. Exhibitors at Floodex capitalized on two days of networking opportunities, with Floodex bringing together leaders in the Local Authority, Internal Drainage Board (IDB), engineers, builders, designers, consultants, contractors and planners with the supply chain and service providers. Irwin said “we would like to attract more developers and facility managers, as long term flooding forecasts, thanks to the latest mapping techniques, could affect the decisions of lenders and insurers, based on flood resilience”.

to save days, weeks and possibly months of legwork, sourcing and communicating with experts and organizations, by having them all under one roof for two days. This is the most efficient use of anyone’s time and money. Some of the comments from exhibitors included Tony Green from Cemex, who said ““we found the Show extremely busy and worthwhile”. David Knapp from Mackley said “It has been a really good show, a really good two days and I like to think we will be supporting and continuing the relationship (with Floodex)”. Floodex provides visitors with the opportunity

The Water and Wastewater Specialists OnSite Central Limited recently attended the latest edition of FLOODEX, the trade show dedicated to the flood defence and water level management sectors, in a bid to expand its customer base ever further with the attainment of new leads. The South Staffordshire PLC owned company, which is widely recognised across the wastewater sector, took a stand at the established event to focus on one particular aspect: flood mitigation. “Our primary customers are water and sewage companies as our services are used extensively for the maintenance of sewer assets, so attending FLOODEX was a great opportunity for us to promote our capabilities to a different market for flood mitigation purposes,” commented Steve Ovington, ‎Head of Business Development at OnSite Central Limited. “Our main reason for exhibiting was to emphasise our strengths in this specialist area by showcasing our offering to an entirely new audience, and this is something we successfully managed to achieve.” OnSite’s core service offering encompasses; cleaning/ jetting, CCTV condition inspection, culvert/pipeline rehabilitation and flow monitoring. OnSite also supplies and installs bespoke systems for the accurate and reliable control of water courses, and it’s incredibly versatile portable temporary dam systems are being used for the safe supervision and renovation works on waterways, rivers, canals & locks, streams, channels, culverts, irrigation ditches, lakes, lochs, ponds, moats and harbours. One of the organisation’s most notable products - Portadam – proved to be of particular interest to the many engineers, builders, designers, consultants, contractors and planners in attendance at FLOODEX. The dependable water barrier systems, which are designed using metal frames and a vinyl membrane, are made specifically for marine and aquatic

environments and are used to create safe, dry working areas to undertake inspection and repair works on damaged structures within bodies of water – topical considering the flood damage caused in Yorkshire and Cumbria during winter last year. “I would say that one of our main advantages is the fact we are a longstanding business that has many years of experience working within the industry,” Steve concluded. “We pride ourselves on our professionalism and constantly try our best to develop new products, technologies and solutions designed to make life easier for those individuals dealing with the damaging aftereffects of floods.” OnSite has gone from strength to strength since its establishment in 1977 and has progressed substantially to clinch the reputable status as one of the UK’s foremost specialist wastewater management contractors. RainWater Harvesting Rain Activ is an innovative new primary SuDS solution developed for incredibly low discharge rates as well as the option to use in conjunction with Rainwater Harvesting. Designed for domestic applications, Rain Activ uses an underground harvesting tank split into two sections. The lower section provides harvested rainwater for non potable applications such as toilets, washing machines and garden use (reducing mains water consumption by up to 50%). The upper section has been designed to slowly release rainwater at an agreed maximum rate in a heavy storm Rain Activ has been designed for incredibly low run off values from 0.08L/second per property. This equates to around 50 times lower than other competitors. Usage of Rain Activ may allow highly sustainable developments on sites previously unable to gain planning consent due to drainage concerns. Using over two years of research and development, drainage figures have been academically verified by both a leading UK University and independent drainage consultancy. From conception, the system has been developed to attenuate a one in 100 year storm at any given domestic site. All systems are calibrated to site requirement using our unique

algorithm. This takes into account roof size, geographic location, peak outflow desired, and harvested water requirement to produce a system perfectly engineered for the development. By virtue of it’s primary design as part of a SuDS plan, Rain Activ can heavily reduce the requirement for expensive, and space intensive, secondary SuDS components such as swales and balancing ponds. Rain Activ provides an all in one solution to the UK’s growing water concerns. With climate change experts predicting drier summers and wetter winters, the system future proofs a development for low mains water consumption and highly effective flood management. Lee Sanitation: A lifetime in the “Business” You could be forgiven for thinking that Lee Sanitation are the new kids on the block when it comes to providing sanitation for the portable industry. The truth is the Company has a long history in supplying solutions for mobile welfare. The story started over 40 years ago when the then British Waterways Board, the custodians of the inland waterways of the UK, made it a requirement for all hire boats on their navigations to have a closed toilet system installed rather than the time honoured tradition of pumping the waste overboard and into the canals and rivers. The hire boat industry and the boat owners needed solutions and so from this point LeeSan was born.

effective removal of the waste from the boats. Hire boats had been using various methods of discharging boats with very little success costing both time and money. LeeSan took up the challenge and can now offer solutions to marinas that provide a service for all types of vessels from small sailing boats to the biggest of Superyachts. www.leesan.com

Having spent the early years providing the toilets, tanks, pumps and all the system ancillaries for the boats it became obvious to the hire boat companies that there would be a requirement for some efficient, well-engineered solutions for the

Floodcheck protects your property from flood by automatically turning off your water: TIME OUT LEAKS If there is a burst pipe or forgotten tap is letting water run continuously FREEZE PROTECTION FOR FROZEN PIPES If the air temperature where the Floodcheck is installed goes below 3 deg Celsius EXCESS FLOW MAJOR RUPTURE If there is a sudden unusual or abnormal demand on the water supply NON USE VACANT PROPERTY

According to UK insurers, the chance of people filing an escape of water claim is three times more likely to happen than a theft claim. Further research conducted last winter found that insurance companies received over 3500 claims on a daily basis, with the average damage caused to properties by burst pipes reaching £25,000 per household, so internal flooding is by no means a small matter.

The potential for the AUTO flood prevention device was soon realised and

Understanding the relentless impacts of water leakage, founder William Saint developed the original Floodcheck® products upon encountering problems with dishwashers and washing machines in his job selling and servicing white goods for a small chain of retailers. The first prototype was the MANUAL model, designed to protect against burst hoses in such appliances, and several years later saw the introduction of the AUTO variety, a more sophisticated version incorporating advanced micro-processor electronics.

the product was subsequently granted international trademarks and patents, undergoing the necessary tests organised by the UK water standards to meet stringent WRAS requirements. The intelligent valve, which has the capability to monitor the water supply around-the-clock every day of the year, made such a significant impression that it even won the Innovation Award after William entered the product into the Essex County Council Innovation Competition. Flowcrete UK Cements Partnership with Total Protection Flowcrete UK has undertaken the extensive refurbishment of a large garage and car park area owned by Cambridge Council alongside Total Protection, its exclusive applicator partner for social housing projects in the South of England. This project exemplifies the ability of resin flooring manufacturer Flowcrete UK and specialist coatings contractor Total Protection to provide clients with every product and service required for a largescale social housing flooring project. The 1,580m2 site in Newtown consists of a 45-unit garage as well as a two-storey car park and ramp. When it was reviewed a number of issues were recorded, including water migration, cracking, leaking gullies and undulations in the concrete slab. One of the main problems in the garage area was that a 100ml recess in the concrete slab’s centre was collecting water. Cambridge Council could source all of the various repair mortars, screeds, damp proof membranes, PU injection systems, corrosion protection, resin coatings and multidisciplinary knowledge

required to upgrade the site from Flowcrete UK and Total Protection. Flowcrete UK’s Managing Director, Kevin Potter, said: “Previously specifiers and developers would need to spend time assembling a variety of suppliers and contractor teams before embarking on a project such as this one, however our new partnership avoids all this hassle, streamlining the route to a high quality floor.” The combination of products used included Flowfast F1 Mortar to repair the substrate and gullies as well as infill voids and buried joints. Isocrete Isopol SBR created a waterproof screed on the car park ramp and main garage area as well as a waterproof render band and Isocrete M-Bond primer protected against rising moisture.

The authority, which was formed to promote the best interests of the country’s professional landscapers, garden designers and landscape suppliers, has successfully progressed to become the UK’s esteemed representative trade body catering specifically to the landscaping sector. Its membership base includes landscapers, landscape contractors, grounds maintenance contractors, interior landscapers, gardeners and garden designers who are prompted to operate to the best of their ability with the highest levels of quality and customer service. BALI

The members can make the most of BALI’s extensive knowledge, which comes in the form of unparalleled business, technical and promotional support. All of the organisations under the trade association share a fundamental attribute: they all have a palpable commitment to achieving Excellency by raising landscaping standards on a continual basis. BALI applicants are experts in the following areas: treework, disabled gardens, gardens designs, gardening, fencing, hard landscaping, soft landscaping, turf, lawn care, trees & shrubs, hydroseeding, interiorscapes, drainage, groundworks, roof gardens and sports grounds. How to choose the correct lawn fertiliser Finding the right fertiliser product for professional lawn maintenance can seem complicated. The amenity market offers a wealth of options but not all of these are cost effective or suitable for use on a domestic lawn. The best approach is to consider your goals and choose with these in mind. New lawns will establish faster with an application of fertiliser. Apply a high phosphorus feed before seeding or under new turf to support the new growth. Encourage customers to water new lawns until established to increase the chance of success. Spring is the time to apply high nitrogen fertiliser for lush green growth. A product with slow release nitrogen will curb excessive mowing. It should also maintain the lush green growth right up until the next treatment in the summer.

as this will cause soft growth that is susceptible to disease. Products containing iron (Fe) or magnesium oxide (MgO) can be used any time of year to quickly green up the lawn. When using iron containing products avoid applying to hard surfaces such as patios and decking as staining can occur. GreenBest Ltd has been blending high-quality lawn care fertiliser for 14 years. We specialise in manufacturing bespoke products at competitive prices. Contact T +44 (0)1963 364788 sales@greenbest.co.uk www.greenbest.co.uk

In summer you may want to apply a product with a low risk of scorching the grass so that it doesn’t need to be watered in. Organic material and biostimulants (e.g. seaweed extract) can also be applied to increase drought tolerance; keeping the lawn greener for longer and helping it recover quicker. In autumn it’s appropriate to use a product high in potassium. This will strengthen the roots and prepare the grass for better disease resistance through the winter ahead. Avoid applying high levels of nitrogen in autumn/winter

Do You Need a Tree Report from a Qualified Arborist? When developing a site, the focus is often on the buildings, access and parking, the green space outside can easily be overlooked. Trees can be regarded as a problem, something to avoid or remove at the earliest stage. However, with care, they can enhance many developments. The pre-development assessment (Tree Constraints Plan) identifies which trees are most suitable for retention, and how they can enhance the site. This includes screening and those which could provide focal points. Established trees provide maturity to a site which can otherwise seem harsh and new. Tree retention needs to be carefully considered. The design and layout of the development should reflect both the needs of the trees being retained and those of future residents. As a tree officer, I guided many applications with trees. One where I was not involved incorporated a mature oak tree in to the rear garden of a new home. It dominated the setting and did not enhance the setting, making the property a less attractive home. With care, this can be avoided.
