We are always looking to work with businesses to deliver innovative solutions, technology and problem-solving to help clients bring their products to market, rejuvenate maturing products and extend the lifecycle of existing products. Our capabilities help to identify, research and challenge the marketability and end-point needs of the product with
the aim of developing technological solutions that speed up time to market. A lot of our innovations stem from a desire to make processes simpler, faster, more accurate and/or less risky whilst utilising the latest technologies Our U-Level Wireless Levelling Device, which we launched at the Engineering Design Show, is just such an example. U-Level addresses the need to level items – including but not limited to caravans and motorhomes – easily and efficiently. Many operations require more than one person to make something level – the person operating the levelling equipment
and a second person to physically observe and report back on an accurate picture of the current incline. This is a time-consuming and awkward process. U-level cuts the need for that second person by making use of a radio transmitter which is placed on or in the device you wish to level, and a receiver which the operator holds to accurately observe the level as you manoeuvre it into position. The added benefit is that it doesn’t have to be in line of sight, a feature that is
of particular benefit in shop-fitting and equipment installation. T 01789 204879 nigelm@assemtron.com www.assemtron.com

MARK full feature compressor aids engineering facility
VC F series with a quad-core processor Smart cameras from Vision Component’s new VC F series are designed for use in intelligent transportation systems, e.g. for automatic license plate recognition (freeflow ALPR applications) in combination with the company’s software tool CARRIDA. They are also suitable for many other tasks, such as quality inspection and production control. VC F units are based on a quad-core processor from Freescale that provides a 4 x 1GHz computing power. Equipped with a freely programmable GPU, the systems use the VC Linux operating system. The cameras feature either one or two remote 1/1.8” CMOS sensors connected by a 30mm or 80mm cable
– the two-sensor version is also suited for stereo camera applications. Depending on the model, the sensors provide a 1,280 x 1,024 (WVGA) or 1,600 x 1,200 pixel resolution. A 1GBit Ethernet interface enables integration into automation environments. Furthermore, the VC F series includes two USB interfaces and an HDMI output – a novelty for VC smart cameras. The new series will be available in the first quarter of 2015. T +44 (0)1933 625162 sales@vision-components.com www.vision-components.com
MERU is a unique organisation producing bespoke disability equipment solutions for children. Upgrading their production facility, they required an improved compressed air set up which lead them to our MARK full feature unit. Making a difference MERU was founded as a charity by a design engineer, William Bond, and an orthopaedic surgeon, Trefor Llewelyn-Bowen, who were concerned at the lack of equipment facilities for disabled children. They saw that many disabilities were so complex that no available ‘offthe-shelf’ equipment met their needs. Working towards solutions is still the driving vision at MERU and the result has seen innovative results, among them a powered indoor chair called The Bugzi. This allows severely disabled children to move themselves around at an early age, substituting the ‘crawling’ or ‘early walking’ stages in a child’s development. Compressed air needs With an ever rising number of projects and the increasing need for a higher production output, MERU’s Epsom design offices and workshops were in need of more compressed air. Moreover, the installation of a new CNC machine entailed some specific requirements. Pure and dry air was a must, but a reliable and continuous air supply became vital since any interruptions would mean a complete re-set of the CNC machine. A charitable cause Although MERU generates revenue through the rental or sale of its items, the majority of its running costs is met through charitable donations and fund-raising, whilst the workforce is supplemented by volunteers. When MERU contacted MARK compressors, the team decided to donate the MSM DX unit and Air Line Systems of Orpington, Kent, a local MARK distributor, also helped with the installation of the unit free of charge. A very nice initiative that has MARK compressed air contributing to a remarkable cause. T 01925 817276 contact.uk@airwco.com www.mark-compressors.com www.meru.org.uk

The professional choice for Portable Dust and Fume Extraction Best Practice is extremely proud to feature VAF Air Ltd with the highly prestigious Commitment to Excellence profile. Paired with sister company Miniveyor Products Ltd, VAF Air are specialist suppliers of confined space equipment to a globally diverse industry base. They have distributed vane axial fans and ventilators to the European market since the mid 1990’s, and their Miniveyor Air range of blowers has now been established as a leading brand worldwide. The combination of dependable power and practical design makes the VAF Air and Miniveyor Air fans and ventilators the professional choice for portable dust and welding fume extraction. As they are stackable, less storage space is taken up, and large handles enable effortless manoeuvrability. Anti-skid rubber feet ensure steady operation, and the rugged build of the machines means they are durable and weather resistant. The double walls are made from high density polythene, meaning the products can absorb bangs frequently experienced with industrial use, eliminating costly
maintenance procedures. “Standard ventilators typically don’t last very long in the workplace,” Darracq Shawe, Director of VAF Air Ltd, explained. “Metal bodied fans tend to dent easily when knocked, so they will need replacing. The plastic moulded fans here at VAF Air are highly resistant so they can last a much longer time. Additionally, all of the parts are replaceable so if anything does get damaged then they can be changed easily.” The portable and reliable fans and blowers are both safe and suitable for use in confined spaces. Where fumes, smells or dust occur, the axial fans can extract contaminated air out of the building, and blow fresh, clean air into a workspace.
a testament to their prominence in the industry, and the company are set to continue with this incredible growth through the advancement of product lines and the acquirement of new associations across the globe. “We are always aiming to develop new products which will further complement our range,” Darracq said. “In terms of future plans, we are keen to increase our dealer network both in the UK and overseas.”
The VAF series range has recently been extended with the introduction of the VAF-200C Canister blower. This innovative extractor houses 7.5 metres of flexible duct in a canister which can neatly be clipped on to the fan body, and the machinery can be carried to the job site with great ease.
VAF Air will be attending the BAUMA Conexpo in South Africa this year between 15-18 September to showcase their impressive range of fans and extractors. They will also be exhibiting at the INTERMAT in Paris between 2125 April, where they will be launching the VAF-200C.
The specialist ventilator company have recently obtained a bigger presence in the USA, after the establishment of a new warehouse and office in Miami. This expansion is

getting close to the maximum, and if the total weight exceeds the vehicle’s plated maximum, the LEDS will turn red.
Based in Redditch, Red Forge are the market leaders in the field of axle load indication and on-board weighing systems. They specialise in the provision of suitable systems for fleets, whether that be in the form of simple overload protection for light commercial vehicles and heavy goods vehicles or highly accurate pay-by-weight solutions. Prioritising legal compliance in regards to fleet loading places the business firmly in the road safety industry.
The business now provides van and truck drivers with the opportunity to more easily monitor the loading status of their vehicles, subsequently informing them as to whether it is safe to drive or not. This is easily achieved with their impressive range of protection equipment made using sophisticated automotive electronics technology.
The second new product is the Axalert Excel. Aimed at the HGV market, this shows the percentage loading on each of the axles, plus an approximate weight indication figure for the front axle, rear axle (or axles) and the gross vehicle weight on one simple display.
Red Forge was established in 1976 by four entrepreneurs, one of whom became the remaining director – Mr John Freeman. After considerable growth, the company moved to a much larger facility in order to better cope with the demand. Relocating from a 5,000 sq. ft. premises to a 24,000 sq. ft. building allowed greater space to install an increasing number of axle load indicators and on-vehicle weighing systems. When the company was first formed there was a direct focus on the re-manufacturing of automotive rotating electrics. It was in the early 1980’s when John was approached by the members of the Birmingham Institute of Road Transport Engineers to look at the problem of overloading on trucks, and the inconvenience of having to
“Red Forge has always prided itself in providing products that are easy to understand by the user,” Andy Freeman, Managing Director at Red Forge, commented. “We try and keep the systems as simple to the user as possible whilst the clever stuff is handled in the electronics, and we are renowned for being a very ethical company who likes to treat customers fairly.” Red Forge currently offer loadcell on-board weighing systems, axle load indication, printers, cut-offs, USB drives, strobes and various health and safety products, and they have recently introduced two new systems to their inventory. The first, the Limitlite Tradesman, is an axle load indicator with an easy to interpret LED traffic light representation of the load condition. The visual indicators will start off green when the vehicle is loaded normally, and will change to amber when the load is
now been in existence for 39 years so next year we will be celebrating 40 years in business.
“With all of our systems, no buttons need to be pressed to operate them,” Andy explained. “We also keep buttons off the front panel by having a unique remote control key pad to access any menu items. This prevents unauthorized access to the menu settings whilst offering an easier method of entering data. All menu items and fault conditions are in plain English thus making the instruction manual virtually obsolete.”
“This achievement is a testament to the dedication Andy Freeman, Managing and continued Director at Redforge support from the staff at Red Forge, some of whom have been with the company for well over 30 years. We have some of the most knowledgeable people in this industry who are well respected for their expertise.”
Red Forge can provide its services to customers in all areas of road transport. Their clients include businesses associated with logistics, maintenance, home deliveries, jetting vehicles, scaffolding, road maintenance, civils, tree cuttings, multiple drop delivery, removals and recovery.
Red Forge will be re-attending the Commercial Vehicle Show at the NEC this year after the previous edition proved to be a great success for the company. They will make an appearance at the inspirational exhibition between 14-16 April 2015 on stand 4G02.
When discussing future plans, Andy said: “We are looking to strengthen our product line up and provide further integration with other on-board systems. Red Forge has

Product Innovation Award
The complete solution for degassing and fluidic handling – comes from Sweden Best Practice is proud to present its Laboratory Product Innovation Award to Biotech AB. Introduction Biotech AB is a Swedish company that develops and delivers innovative laboratory products to instrument manufacturers and distributors worldwide. In particular, the company is specialized in solving problems with dissolved gases and bubbles in fluidic systems. With the help of Biotech advanced Degassers laboratories can optimize the performance of their analytical instruments and chromatography equipment. It also saves the industry both time and money by avoiding production
disruptions caused by bubbles in the fluidic lines. No troubles with bubbles Oxygen, air, carbon dioxide are
some of the dissolved gases that are present in a liquid and these gases can form bubbles and disturb the pump reliability and flow rate in any fluidic system. Furthermore, if a sensitive detection method or process is involved, the result of bubble formation can be serious. The dissolved gases in the liquid can form bubbles when the temperature or the pressure is changed or when different kind of solvents are mixed. A very easy and convenient solution to avoid issues with bubble formation is to remove dissolved gas in the liquid with use of an in-line degasser. By reducing the amount of gas with an efficient membrane degasser bubble formation in the fluidic system
can be prevented. For over 10 years, the company has developed products in the field of degassing and the product line Biotech DEGASi covers a wide application range. This means possibilities to offer customers unique solutions for the analysis to be both safer and more efficient. Whether the field is chemical analysis, biotechnology or sensitive processes on the manufacturing side. Recently, the company has started to work with degassing solutions also within very high flow rate applications. Innovative solutions – from idea to finished product Through the years, Biotech AB has launched a range of innovative products. The company works closely with its clients and participates in a variety of research projects with well-known European and American companies and institutions. It allows one to take advantage of the synergy effects that occurs between research and applied technology. Biotech is an OEM business partner and is part of networks of expert partners
in both academy and industry. Availability of this accumulated knowledge and experience is an important prerequisite for developing unique and customized products. An example of this is SunShell – a new type of separation column developed in collaboration with Chromanik Technologies in Japan. The column uses core shell technology that delivers higher performance and more reliable results than conventional columns. Most of Biotech instruments and components are manufactured for the OEM market. Everything for the lab Another part of Biotech’s business is to provide laboratories with all type of equipment and the necessary components of a liquid system. Biotech also helps customers to tailor the system for laboratories specific needs of fluidic handling. The company offers a wide range of products to suit every possible flow rate and type of fluids. Within this field, Biotech offers a number of well-known brands, such as Systec, Upchurch, Rheodyne, Isolation Technologies and Ismatec. Biotech AB is an OEM business partner of IDEX Health & Science LLC. Service of all equipment Biotech is a knowledge company that works closely with its customers both in terms of developing new products and solving problems for the end customer. Ace Screeners News The Haigh Engineering Company Waste Water Experience & Innovation
ACE Screener®
The Society of British Water and Wastewater Industries (SBWWI) is recognised as the trade association for the supply chain providing goods and services to the water and wastewater industries in the UK.
Screening & Screenings Handling Haigh’s range of ACE Screeners® cover inlet flows from 0-100l/s and are designed specifically for use in waste water and sewage treatment works. Installation flexibility is a key attribute, allowing project designers to use an ACE Screener® in virtually any situation, including retrofit into existing civil structures, new build channels, or as pipeline sections.
The organisation aims to represent the opinions of the individuals who form the SBWWI membership; maintaining the interests of contractors, manufacturers, distributors, training providers and consultants, and making them known to clients and other appropriate bodies.
Zero washwater One of the great advantages of the ACE Screener® is that it requires no wash water whatsoever. Often the cost of potable or piped in water is not included in the whole life cost of an installation, when up to 70 tonnes of water are used by some competitor products per day. The capital cost of a Screener can soon be recovered. Maximum organics returned to treatment Organics removed from the flow are a problem so ACE Screeners® are designed to keep them there where they can improve downstream processes and limit residual solids to less than 5% of the original screened material. The resulting end product screenings are cleaner, with little smell and are easier to dispose of.
The society engages closely with the water industry through direct meetings with water companies and regulators. Their activities include functions such as representation to regulators, government departments, input into standards-setting, training of operatives, contractual and

When three pumps are better than one
Wanner completes Major Russian Order
Engineers at Wanner have designed a high flow rate skid that incorporates three of the Company’s Hydra-Cell G35 pumps operating in parallel.
Wanner International has completed a major order to supply its Hydra-Cell metering and dosing pumps to a leading Russian oil refinery. The order comprised some 44 ATEX approved pump & motor sets along with mechanical speed variators, pressure relief valves and pulsation dampeners.
The system can pump up to 420 litres per minute at 83 bar pressure or up to 200 litres per minute at 100 bar pressure. Installing three Hydra-Cell pumps means three times the flow as they are true positive displacement pumps. This is not the case in a centrifugal pump system. With HydraCell pumps the flow is maintained but the friction losses manifest themselves in increased system pressure. The multiple pump system where all three pumps take suction from a common manifold and discharge into a common header is reported to be ideal in situations where some flow needs to be maintained continuously and system shutdown is not an option. Minimal routine maintenance requirements can be easily accommodated while maintaining up to 60% of the rated flow and should a pump or motor go down it can be replaced while the rest of the system is still functioning. The system produces a virtually pulseless flow and is extremely accurate, exceeding the performance
requirements of API 675 in terms of flow repeatability, steady state accuracy and linearity. Some users choose the three pump option using two pumps to achieve service while keeping one for backup. In many instances, where footprint is not an issue, the three pump approach can save on acquisition costs and energy costs while improving the overall reliability and efficiency of the system. pumping a tank until its empty and guarding against operator error (emptying a supply tank by mistake does happen) are potentially disastrous for conventional pumps that depend on the pumped liquid for internal lubrication but are no problem for Hydra-Cell pumps.
In all, some seven different pump models were required for flows up to 4,600 litres per hour and pressures up to 63 bar and all are driven by GOST Certified motors. “Most of the pumps supplied meet or exceed the metering performance requirements of API 675,” said Paul Davis, Managing Director. “And the fact that HydraCell pumps showed the lowest projected Life Cycle Costs (LCC)
“Working closely with Pump Union LLC, our Russian distributor, we were also able to meet all the technical requirements,” continued Davis, “That we were able to supply literature and documentation in Russian language also gave the customer confidence.”
contributed greatly to gaining the business.” Hydra-Cell pumps have no dynamic seals and can therefore provide 100% containment of the pumped liquid, which is critical in many refinery applications. The fact that dry running does not damage Hydra-Cell pumps was also a major consideration. Dry start-up,

Hydra-Cell excels in Zero liquid discharge The addition of super duplex stainless steel to the range of liquid head materials available now enables Hydra-Cell G15 pumps to manage the tough-to-handle waste waters processed in ‘zero liquid discharge (ZLD) systems. As water becomes an ever more expensive commodity, industrial, oil, chemical and petrochemical companies are increasingly turning to ZLD systems, minimizing wastewater discharge and maximising water recovery. Frequently these wastewaters have high levels of Total Dissolved Solids (TDS) and many contain particulate matter that can cause severe wear in pumps with tight tolerances and rapidly degrade seals. Having no tight tolerances and no dynamic seals to wear, Hydra-Cell pumps are proving to be ideal for this application.
Many of these waste streams have a high chloride content, which causes rapid corrosion, even within stainless steel pumps. Because of the way the Hydra-Cell pump is designed, it has only been necessary to incorporate 2507 Super Duplex liquid ends (manifolds and valve plates) in order to overcome this potential corrosion problem. A plunger or piston pump would require substantial modification of many components in order to overcome such a corrosion threat. Hydra-Cell pumps meet the pressure requirements of membrane filtration systems and concentrators while requiring little in the way of maintenance. Leading safety upwards Over a third of all injuries reported annually are caused as a result of a slip or trip at the workplace. Skyhook GB Limited, established in 2004, has come up with a revolutionary product specifically designed to prevent these unfortunate mishaps. The Skyhook concept has been widely accepted in the construction industry due to its incredible effectiveness and convenience. The Skyhook support system has been sold to over 150 companies throughout the UK, including some of the biggest names in manufacturing. The ground-breaking product is used as a form of temporary support, as it is hooked over items such as floor joists or ceiling grids, and the fixing hole in the top enables it to be screwed upwards onto fixtures. If users are unable to get a fixing overhead, the support can be fixed through the side hole, which keeps the trailing cables away from the floor, eliminating this potential safety hazard. Also available is the Medi Hook, which serves great purpose in medical centres, because it’s designed to hang from the bed rail to hold tubing away from the floor. Skyhook GB Limited has proudly

announced two new additions to their range; the Multi Hook and Extendable Tower Stands. The Multi Hook is similar to the Skyhook but the additional loop featured has the capability to accommodate multiple cables. The Extendable Tower Stand can be raised up to 3 metres in height and is made from a steel box section. With this item, multiple cables can be carried at various heights, because of the attached nonconductible plastic head. This incredibly innovative range consists of incredibly versatile and flexible products which make work environments significantly safer. Skyhook GB Limited is consistently striving towards raising standards, and they trust that their new additions will continue to assist companies in the construction industry. Bin Handling Solutions A company based in Coventry who are a supplier of pipes and valves and have extensive recycling systems where left with a small percentage of waste to dispose of. They collect the waste using 240 litre wheelie bins which are walked outside to an external Ram Compactor. Up to now the bins have been dragged up a make shift ramp and the operator physically pick up the wheelie bin and shakes out the waste. They knew this was an issue and decided to find the solution. Landfill Alternatives have now installed a moveable 240ltr bin tipper. This sits in front of the compactor charge box, the bins are pushed into the tipper housing, and pressing two buttons the bin contents are emptied into the Ram Compactor. If they wish to dispose of waste using the forklift, then they simply pull the bin tipper out of the way, as it is on

The Energy Maxi, Major and Mastiff Diaphragm Pumps are the invaluable mainstay of many Sewage Treatment Works. They are competent in both primary and humus desludging and sledge transfer duties. Energy Pumps also have many applications in any industries which need to pump difficult sludge reliably and economically. The patented positive flow base of our Diaphragm Pumps, with patented anti-ragging, non-return Valves is designed to ensure that air quickly passes through the base, which then leads to an easier flow of contaminated materials. This, in turn offers low maintenance and ease of repair, when necessary. Energy Pumps are the obvious choice for many maintenance engineers. The range of Energy Diaphragm Pumps varies according to the application. The Energy Hydraulic Mastiff Diaphragm Pump is ideally suited for those jobs which require pumping difficult sludge to higher pressures while retaining longevity and reliability, plus ease of maintenance as with Energy Mechanical Pumps. The reliable and versatile Energy Mastiff Diaphragm Pump is based on our highly successful Major. Our Mechanical and Hydraulic Mastiffs allow for greater flow rates and delivery Head. They are capable of processing materials much quicker than the Energy Major Pump, for those tough-handling jobs which require the most robust Pumps. Being the smallest of the Energy Pumps, the Energy Maxi Diaphragm Pump was initially the first to be designed for small STW’s. This Pump has also proven itself to be popular with Abattoirs and Potteries. All Energy Diaphragm Pumps are reliable Flood-Water Pumps and are popular with Farmers for effluent, animal-feed and Agricultural purposes.
