Forklift Truck Company of Choice
Improving safety, efficiency and costs Best Practice is extremely proud to present AEC Designs as its selected Forklift Truck Company of Choice. AEC Designs offers an innovative solution to a fundamental problem that forklift truck drivers encounter; from the operator’s seat they don’t have sufficient view of the forks to be fully in control their position. ForkAngles is a new mast tilt indicator that discreetly mounts in the eye-line of the operator and gives a clear and precise indication of the mast tilt angle. The new device is designed to be simply retro-fitted to Counterbalance Forklift Trucks and allows operators to be able to accurately align the forks with the load, first time, and every-time. Research has shown that on average FLT drivers have only around a 6% probability of getting the tilt angle right first time, meaning 94% of the time drivers may need to make corrections which causes unnecessary wear, increases fuel consumption, and slows down pallet handling times. Any errors in aligning the forks could lead to damage to; the forks/ attachments, the pallet/products it is carrying and racking systems. Antony Cook, inventor of ForkAngles has a great deal of experience using forklift trucks having worked for a multi-national engineering company in the past. Witnessing the difficulties colleagues were experiencing, he decided to design the simplest, most accurate and reliable solution to the problem. Research showed that Antony had actually solved a problem that has existed since fork-lift trucks were invented, and so the journey began to turn the idea into reality. Antony commented, “As a design engineer it is important to have a very inquisitive
nature, and to ask why things are the way they are. From here we can start to consider how they could be made better, simpler, easier to use and more efficient. The problem of poor vision of the forks has been around for so long that it is accepted as being normal, with companies putting up with a certain amount of damages, often unfairly attributing them to driver error. In the modern competitive business environment this is no longer acceptable. ForkAngles is of benefit to both new and experienced drivers and we have received a great deal of tremendous feedback from end users.” ForkAngles helps businesses to save time, save money, improve safety and lower their carbon footprint. Designed and built using top quality components sourced within the UK, ForkAngles dramatically increases the accuracy of forklift operation. It has been researched throughout extensive field trials and samples have been fitted to counterbalance trucks in different types of company and environments since May 2013. Antony is currently looking to expand the business into new markets and is seeking dealers and distributors in the forklift industry to promote and sell the product. For more information or to get involved, contact Antony on: +44 (0)1782 900259, email: info@forkangles.co.uk or visit the website at: www.forkangles.co.uk

The leader in model-based inspection software During its humble beginnings in 1993, Verisurf was initially set on providing an effective way to inspect complex parts solely for the aerospace sector. Continued growth has since helped the company to flourish, subsequently extending its services to the automotive, marine, defence, energy, medical and space industries. During his career in manufacturing, founder Ernie Husted realised there was a fundamental need for a system to be put into place to ensure greater ease and efficiency whilst inspecting machinery components. Determined to address this gap in the market, Ernie devised a highly specialised model-based software programme, which swiftly became the leading solution for build and analysis across the globe. This resulted in the creation of Verisurf UK LTD., an independent UK company birthed in 2009. Based in Worcestershire, Verisurf UK LTD is the master distributor of Verisurf software for the UK and Ireland. The technology, which principally focuses on inspection and metrology, is built on a robust, highly modernised CAD system, guiding users through tool building in real-time. It effectively enables clients to effortlessly

conduct the functions of design through to manufacture and streamline the quality process controls across all production stages. “There are four main benefits Verisurf has in supporting the manufacturing enterprise,” explained James Barnes, owner of Verisurf UK LTD. “First, most of our competitors are far too scientific, making them too hard to learn and use. Secondly, most software has limited CAD creation and interoperability rendering them obsolete in today’s dynamic 3D manufacturing environment. And thirdly, most other software is limited to one brand or model of CMM making them a limited point solution and barrier to CMM freedom of choice and negotiability. Finally,
“We are different in the respect that we operate in a simplified way even with advanced applications which clients can identify with. Although we serve big name companies such as Boeing, Honda, EDF Energy, GKN and Airbus, our software is easy to navigate and is designed for the average user, providing fundamental feedback and operating on a real-time basis. “Another key advantage is that as a smaller company, we can provide a very personal support system. We place a direct emphasis on providing a quality service, and we pride ourselves on our reputation for always being there for our customers.” Verisurf’s fully implemented techniques in modelbased definition have application in many areas. The comprehensive, industry-leading solutions can be used in tool building, tool periodic inspection, quality
The company has recently launched its new product module, Automate. This sophisticated module, which is based on a 3D CAD measurement platform that automates all types of coordinate measuring machines, operates CMMs faster (and at a reduced cost). This modern product has the ability to construct CMM inspection plans to STL files, with the added function of automating the inspection of 3D printed prototypes. “As a company we are always growing,” James commented. “Our aim is to continue advancing the software, increasing our coverage and taking on additional clients. We will focus on meeting the increasing industry demand, and raising awareness of our products through attendance at various trade events.” Verisurf will be attending the Make Measurement Matter roadshow in Northamptonshire on 15 October 2015 and the EPMC (European Portable Metrology Conference) in Manchester on 9-11 Nov 2015. Product Innovation Award
Four Decades of Power Factor Correction equipment cycle; from its manufacture, through its warranty period to expiry – the company recommends equipment is serviced regularly and parts upgraded where appropriate.”
Best Practice is incredibly pleased to present Power Capacitors Ltd with its Product Innovation Award. The Power Factor of a load is defined as the ratio of active power to total demand. Power Factor Correction (PFC) is the application of properly manufactured and installed equipment which will compensate for the ‘useless’ yet essential part of the demand on the supply, leaving only ‘useful’ power to be drawn from the mains. Commercial benefits of PFC include the prevention of excess reactive power charges (lower bills!) and a reduction of the overall demand on the supply. The average investment payback period is now just over 2 years. There are also many technical advantages, as not only is the power quality improved, but network reliability is also increased. Ever since its inception in 1973, Power Capacitors has concentrated firmly on PFC and related capacitor technologies. Based
in Birmingham, the company has developed a wide selection of products and services supported by possibly the largest stock of power capacitors in the UK. Capabilities include the design, manufacture, installation and maintenance of any type of low-voltage PFC equipment as well as the distribution of power electronics and motor capacitors.

With 20% of all workplace deaths still caused by vehicles, here are 10 crossindustry tips that will go some way towards making your workplace safer, streamlined and more efficient… 1) Independence Day Wherever possible vehicles and pedestrians should be segregated, with each moving in their own defined zones. 2) Vanishing Point Areas where vehicles and pedestrians crossover are critical and they should be properly managed – use floor markings, overhead walkways, control lights, gates and make sure these areas are clearly marked. 3) The Fast & the Furious Understand the potential forces of the vehicles operating in your workplace – only then can safety barriers that are fit-for-purpose be installed. Barrier specialists should have an up-todate tick sheet of vehicles with their potential kinetic energies. 4) Wings of Desire Try to create pedestrian routes that follow ‘desire lines’ – the natural route a pedestrian would take around a facility. This way, it’s less likely a pedestrian will stray from the designated path. 5) Rebel without a Cause Even the best traffic management procedures can’t prevent the wreckage caused by a rogue FLT driver. Make sure every driver is
trained, certified and kept up-to-date with best practice. 6) The Green Mile Pedestrian routes should be clearly defined and coloured differently from areas where traffic is permitted. 7) The Phantom Menace Ensure a ‘deflection zone’ or ‘pedestrian buffer zone’ is implemented as part of the pedestrian route. This considers the amount of deflection in a barrier if it happens to be impacted by a vehicle. A white floor line 1m away from the barrier should inform pedestrians not to enter this zone. 8) The Sixth Sense Blind corners are potential hazards for vehicles. Strategically placed barriers can help ‘soften’ hard angles and improve drivers’ line of sight. 9) Guardians of the Galaxy Wherever vehicles move near structures or equipment protect them with the correct, fit-for-purpose barrier system. 10) It’s a mad, mad, mad world Facilities are ever-changing and can easily become over-run and unsafe. Continually examine and revise your traffic management procedures. Contact T +44 (0)1422 344402 sales@asafe.com www.asafe.com

Product Innovation Award
Tape application made easy Best Practice is extremely proud to present its Product Innovation Award 2015 profile to Enimac Biemme Adesivi, a major tape distributor and converter in northern Italy serving clients since 1965, established Enimac in 2013. Biemme was never fully satisfied with the tape application machines offered on the market, and so began developing their own. After several years of testing and given early clients’ very positive feedback, Biemme decided to form a separate company and make their products available worldwide. Enimac designs and produces standard and custom tape application systems and manufactures both standalone systems and solutions that can be integrated into production processes. Martin Buerger, International Business
Development & Export Manager at Enimac, commented: “Our goal is to provide customers the degree of automation that makes the most sense for them. Though our standard systems are mainly sold in the printing, packaging and graphic arts industries, we have also developed solutions for the electronics, furniture and automotive industries.” “Our systems use our patented ‘paste & cut’ technology that quickly and cleanly applies tape without the need for compressed air. This reduces maintenance costs and makes our machines very mobile: our standard systems can come to the work instead of having the work come to them. Moving the applicator heads to the desired position and adjusting for product thickness is fast and hassle-free. We use only quality components to ensure there is no untimely
breakage of parts and data input is straightforward, logical and easy using a touchscreen.” “As we are part of a tape converting group, we don’t just sell our customers automation, but complete tape application solutions. Many of the problems they have we have seen before and can deal with them using our years of expertise.” With offices and production facilities based near Milan, Italy, the company has satisfied clients in Italy, Kazakhstan, Lithuania, the Netherlands, the UK, and South Korea. Enimac ships products worldwide and offers support for customers whenever and wherever needed. One of Enimac’s most innovative products is the tape application system, X-Treme Light. The automatic adhesive tape application system has a manual feed and selfcalibrating photocell for accurate reading of transparent, white, black, coloured and diecut materials. It is equipped with micrometric adjustment for product thickness of up to 10mm and can paste and cut tape up to 1mm thick at up to 35m/min.
recently attended IPEX 2014 in London and IPACK-IMA in Milan, receiving a fantastic response from both. Martin commented: “The shows gave us great international exposure reducing our dependence on one market. IPACK-IMA allowed us to introduce new extensions to our tape applicator head line, which were a major hit with visitors. In addition, we officially presented our new exclusive distributor in the UK: Newtown (www.newtowntapes.co.uk). We are also preparing for DRUPA 2016 and several others are being considered. “For more news, pictures and videos on our products, you can follow us on twitter, @EnimacSrl, and connect on Facebook.” T 0039 023287425/0039 023287433 info@enimac.it www.enimac.it/en
The X-treme PRO Wide Format Tape Application System also offers many benefits for users. With a maximum product width of 1,600mm, it easily accommodates the largest formats of offset printing and many formats of digital printing. With up to 6 independently programmable patented ‘paste and cut’ applicators, the system can accurately paste and cut tape up to 2mm thick including 3M VHB at speeds up to 50m/min to posters, floor stands, PVC, Forex and much more. When Steven Trim, a seasoned molecular biologist in drug discovery, decided to combat the complexities associated with finding new medicines back in 2010, specialist company Venomtech Ltd was born. Having worked extensively in pharmacology, biochemistry and anatomy (with a refined expertise in pain therapeutics), Steve’s credentials made him an ideal candidate for Managing Director, completely committed to resolving the problems of tough drug discovery targets. Concentrated research has suggested that over 70% of drug targets are either membrane proteins (including GPCRs, ion channels) and/or belong to families of closely related genes such as kinases, which essentially means that developing specific drugs is incredibly difficult. The business actively strives to overcome significant challenges of organic chemistry in order to find new, high value medicines using venom collections. Solutions come in the form of vast libraries comprising thousands of individual venom components; whether they are ready-to-use or custom-made, the exclusive liquids are fast becoming the international standard.

Best of Britain – Laboratory
Centenary celebrations for leading scientific instrument manufacturer Bellingham + Stanley
Lab Practice is extremely proud to feature the Best of Britain 2015 Award to Bellingham + Stanley. When Leonard Bellingham and Frank Stanley formalised their partnership on the 8th May 1915 by registering at Companies House, little did they know that their legacy would be an internationally recognised brand operating as part of a $3billion dollar business quoted on the New York stock exchange; truly representing the Best of Britain! Almost as soon as they started operations from their London basement site at No. 71 Hornsey Rise; they outgrew the space and moved to a larger facility at Markfield Road that became the home of Bellingham + Stanley up until 1976, when they moved to a purpose built manufacturing site in Tunbridge Wells from where the company still operates. Since first supplying the sugar industry with refractometers and polarimeters for the purpose of payment and process control, Bellingham + Stanley quickly moved to other markets including the lucrative food & beverage industry, where to this day, their refractometers control the Brix, or concentration of liquid products made by many of the world's most well-known brands. There have been many other
II
milestones over the past 100 years. It is believed that when Bellingham + Stanley produced the Pocket refractometer in the 1930s, they were the first to take measurement to the field and still their hand held refractometers are commonly used within so many applications; from fruit growers, jam makers, automotive and aircraftengineers to plumbers installing solar heat source collectors.
when Bellingham + Stanley introduced the world’s first commercially successful automatic refractometer in 1980, customers like Pepsi, Britvic, Heinz and Nestle picked up the advantage offered by the new RFM80 Series refractometers and purchased them for use throughout their global operations. Today, like many others, they remain as loyal customers of its successor, the RFM340 refractometer, seen by many as the world’s first choice refractometer for food, beverage, pharmaceutical and industrial applications.
In 1946, Bellingham + Stanley exhibited at British Industries Fair at Olympia in London and even the then Queen, or Queen Mother as we are more likely know her, and Princess Margaret took an interest at the show and then, following the rapid growth in technological advancement in the 1960s, Bellingham + Stanley quickly saw the need to digitise their instruments so that they could be used by unskilled operators within a factory environment. ScrubAir Pipette Washer/ Dryer Water conservation has become a topic of interest in modern lab design. And in keeping up with current market needs, Labconco researched lab water usage and discovered one major sink hole – glass pipette washing. Gallons upon gallons of tap water are poured down the drain as the common, siphon-style, pipette washers fill then drain repeatedly. When washing is complete, rinsing generally begins using deionized (DI) water – a very expensive solvent. After the time-consuming process of washing and rinsing, the pipettes must be carefully removed, sorted into drying baskets and placed in an oven overnight. Total elapsed time to wash and dry a single load of pipettes no more than 24 hours. Tapping into our experience of designing and manufacturing laboratory glassware washers, we decided to address this issue. Combining direct injection cleaning, scrubbing action of percolation and consistency of automation, we streamlined the washing process with considerably less water and substantially less time. The new ScrubAir™ Pipette Washer/ Dryer is a one-of-a-kind automated unit to wash and dry in one place. The durable, steel-constructed unit can wash, rinse and dry up to 60
pipettes with just the touch of a button. And it reduces water usage to as little as 12.5 for wash and rinse versus the 600L (at 2L/min) easily required for four hours of manual washing. At the completion of the wash and rinse cycles, forced-air drying is initiated through direct injection. Total elapsed time to wash and dry a load of pipets with the ScrubAir in just under five hours. This drops to 3.5 hours with the heated model. The user-friendly interface has three flexible and lockable program cycles including options for both wash and dry duration and number of rinse cycles. The standard model is equipped with a single water inlet and pressurized air inlet. The heated model has an additional water inlet built in, giving the user the added ability to rinse with purified water. Blackline Safety’s Loner Duo Blackline Safety’s Loner Duo is a Bluetooth® accessory that enhances its Loner Mobile safety monitoring application for popular smartphones. Together, they turn a compatible smartphone into a leading safety monitoring solution for lone workers. Features include True Fall Detection®, man-down detection, employee check-in with comments, emergency latch, silent emergency button, precise positioning, real-time safety alerting, and two-way voice communications with monitoring personnel. If an employee is in urgent need of help, most smartphone safety monitoring apps require the employee to wake the smartphone, unlock the device with a code or fingerprint, find the application within the interface, and swipe a control to request help. This process takes precious seconds that the user may not have. Further, many smartphone users do not always have their smartphone within arm’s reach at all times, increasing the risk of not triggering an alert quickly enough. The strength of Loner Duo lies in its ability to be worn by the employee. Maintaining a Bluetooth connection to his or her nearby smartphone, the user is provided with physical interface, allowing a help request to be triggered near instantly. The new Think® Chair: A sustainable pioneer
The TranScan® 2 data logging system from Seven Telematics
Steelcase, the global leader in the office furniture industry, has officially launched the new Think® chair – smarter, simpler and fully committed to sustainability.
With a refrigerated trailer fleet of approximately 280 trailers that predominantly use the TranScan® 2 data logging system from Seven Telematics, Reed Boardall has further extended its relationship with Seven Telematics by recently incorporating its Cool Track remote monitoring software within 60 of its current trailer fleet.
First launched in 2004, it was embraced as an innovation breakthrough in performance and quickly became a pioneer of sustainability. Steelcase always approaches innovation with sustainability in mind and this also drove the redesign process of Think®. For the past 10 years, the Steelcase design team have worked closely with eco-design networks to find additional improvement opportunities and suppliers who could provide appropriate recycling materials with the correct technical properties. The result is that, for the new Think® chair, a pre-consumer recycled polyamide was used on significant parts instead of the usual virgin polyamide, which helps reduce carbon emissions.
Upholstery techniques used for the back and seat on the 3D mesh versions enable effective disassembly at endof-life. Think® will be packaged in four pieces to reduce environmental impact and the chair can be disassembled in five minutes with common hand tools, making it easier to recycle at the end-of-life.
According to Marcus Boardall, group finance director at The Reed Boardall Group, “Last year, we made the decision to switch from the incumbent supplier of our trailer tracking software. We chose to trial, the Cool Track system from Seven Telematics as we had always had good reliable service from the company over the previous 10 years, with regards to the substantial number of TranScan® 2 data loggers in our fleet. The first trial Cool Track units went into service during last year and performed really well in our fleet operation. The response from the technical team at Seven was superb, as they reacted so quickly to our specific operational needs, showing first class attention to detail.” Following this rigorous evaluation exercise during 2014, Reed Boardall initially ordered 30
Cool Track systems for its fleet and, for ease of installation, these were incorporated within the existing TranScan® temperature recorders, going into service towards the end of last year. This first batch of Cool Track systems has been followed up by a second order for a further 30 Cool Track systems that are now currently being installed in the Reed Boardall trailer fleet. As part of the 60 systems deal, the Cool Track software incorporates a bespoke data feed created specifically for Reed Boardall by Seven’s technical team and this automatically collects and stores the TranScan® data on Reed Boardall’s dedicated in house computer system in their traffic office at Boroughbridge, North Yorkshire. By operating the TranScan® Temperature Monitoring with Cool Track remote monitoring,

5 Simple Steps to Pallet Racking Safety by The Rack Group Ltd
The Rack Group Ltd are a well-respected name within the pallet racking and warehousing sector. Along with their associate companies: Rack Armour Ltd and Rack Training Ltd, they are a nationwide company providing health and safety compliance and cost-effective solutions to those with storage equipment. The Rack Group state that their working mantra is the European standard EN 15635 Steel Static Storage Systems: Application and Maintenance of Storage Equipment. From this, The Rack Group have created their Rack Aid Management System which has been specifically designed to keep warehouses conforming to this standard with 5 simple steps. 1) Safety Inspections: Pallet Racking is work equipment, therefore it should be regularly inspected
by a competent person under the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998. The Rack Group’s inspection service is truly second to none. They use a data pen method when carrying out their inspections to ensure that the information gathered is properly communicated between all parties quickly and effectively. 2) Planned Maintenance: The Rack Group have four decades of experience in pallet racking safety. During this time they have devised a number of solutions and maintenance plans to ensure your racking is fit for purpose. Thus ensuring a smoother running warehouse and preventing unwanted damage and costs occurring. Their proactive and reactive methods of working ensure that they can plan to save you
money, but also react rapidly when required. 3) Specialist Repair Equipment: Sometimes damage can’t be prevented, and when it happens The Rack Group should be your first thought. They are able to offer repair methods which vastly reduce the hazard of a racking collapse. You don’t always have to completely replace damaged parts. Take for example their Front Upright Reinforcement Section, this enables damaged uprights to be repaired and strengthened when damage occurs in the bottom 600mm of the upright. The reinforced steel used will also prevent further everyday impacts rendering uprights unsafe. 4) Protection: Rack Armour, are an associate company of The Rack Group, their global product, the Rack Armour upright protector leads the way in upright
protection with its cylindrical shape, ballistics grade polymer and impact diffusing foam. Rack Armour now offer a new to the market barrier range, which has been designed around their upright protection success, offering full end of aisle defence as well as covering bespoke warehouse needs. Their in house technical department can tailor a barrier to sort your problem. 5) Training: Another associate company of The Rack Group are Rack Training. They were formed whilst assessing the requirements for full European Standard compliance in regards to providing your employees with information, instruction and training around the hazards associated with storage equipment. Rack Training offer everything your company needs to be competent around pallet racking. They have even taken this to the online format recently providing a course for employees new to the warehouse environment. This year will see Rack Training develop their online course library to match their complete range of current courses. Stocks kept high at Tower Bridge Exhibition
Over 50% of companies are not ready for major incidents, new survey reveals 54% of companies will not be ready in the event of a major IT incident according to a new poll by IT educator and consultant Sysop (www.sysop.co.uk), with respondents saying they are ‘poorly prepared’ (15%) or are ‘only prepared for some eventualities’ (39%) should a major incident occur.
City of London Corporation has recently taken delivery of a pedestrian controlled PFB500 from Bradshaw Electric Vehicles. The model is an additional vehicle for City of London Corporation, and is being used to move stock from a loading bay on the south side of the bridge, to a couple of locations. One area that stock has to be transported to is across the bridge, via pavements and up in to the main towers of the bridge in a lift. The other area is below the road, in the old Victorian Engine Rooms, which are open to the public as part of Tower Bridge Exhibition and where the shop is located. Glen Ellis, Technical Officer Tower Bridge, said, “Our main reason for ordering the additional truck is the increase in sales in our shop and indeed vending stock. This is mainly due to the recent opening of the new glass floors in the walkways, resulting in a marked increase in visitor numbers to the bridge.” A three-wheel vehicle, Bradshaw’s Pedestrian Controlled PFB500 has great maneuverability to tackle the busy site safely. A key requirement was for the truck to fit in to a small glass lift to go down to where the shop is located. With a width of just 700mm, a payload of 500kg and maximum speed of 6.4kph, it was the perfect solution to ensure the job is carried out both quickly and safely. The pedestrian controlled vehicle is easy to operate and comes with
safety features including an emergency stop button, safety cut out and body protection switch, which automatically stops the vehicle if it comes in to contact with the operator. A Bradshaw PCF6, the previous model to the Bradshaw PFB500, is still operating on the site, and will mainly be used by maintenance staff to assist with heavier loads such as bridge operating equipment and items such as souvenir guide books. Semiconductor robots lead the way High precision gearing specialist Harmonic Drive UK has today launched a new series of extremely lightweight and compact gears for the next generation of robots. Targeting the semiconductor electronics market, the new CSD Component Set is equipped with a heavy duty cross roller bearing to deliver high payload performance in environments with limited space. Wafer handling robots used in the semiconductor industry have the challenging task of stacking silicon wafers into a cassette tower by accurately detecting wafer presence and position. This is achieved by calculating the wafer centre to an accuracy of 5,000ths of an inch to reduce errors. Characterised by a very short overall length and a lightweight design, the CSD Series delivers the required high power to weight ratio, in a compact form factor and is available in two variants. The CSD-2UH range boasts the smallest outside diameter, offers a torque capacity of 12Nm to 820Nm and is available in seven sizes in ratios of 50, 100 and 160:1. The second variant, CSD-2UF, has the shortest overall length and offers a torque capacity of 12Nm to 450Nm in six sizes and the same three ratios.

■ Over a third has an IT-business alignment problem ■ 37% point to low or no IT professional development ■ 13% have no change manager.
33% of respondents say they ‘need to do more to align their IT with the business,’ with 4% admitting that their IT-business alignment is ‘poor.’ Almost two in ten also say that management has ‘no understanding’ (5%) or a ‘poor understanding’ (14%) of the importance of IT to the business.
Professional IT development is another problem highlighted by Sysop’s poll: 37% of respondents say their organisation ‘could do better’ (33%) or is ‘poor’ (4%) in the development of its IT professionals. The poll surveyed change management, a core IT service management (ITSM) discipline covering key, company-protective changes to IT infrastructure – and revealed that 13% of respondents have no change manager or change advisory board (CAB). Sysop tracked each phase of the development cycle to identify at what stage the CAB or change manager got involved. Only 17% of respondents say that they got involved ‘when change is chartered,’ so following IT service management best practice. 34% say they got involved ‘when detailed specification is designed,’ 19% ‘when build and test commences’ and 17% ‘when build and test is complete.’ Contact T +44 (0)1706 361110 www.sysop.co.uk

“We've designed the CSD range to be compatible with existing systems,” explained Graham Mackrell, Managing Director of Harmonic Drive UK. “The entire range mounts easily with any standard servo actuator. Engineers at Wanner have designed a high flow rate skid that incorporates three of the company’s Hydra-Cell G35 pumps operating in parallel. The system can pump up to 420L/min at 83 bar pressure or up to 200L/ min at 100 bar pressure. Wanner says that installing three Hydra-Cell pumps means three times the flow as they are true positive displacement pumps. Flow is maintained but friction losses manifest themselves in increased system pressure.
The multiple pump system where all three pumps take suction from a common manifold and discharge into a common header is reported to be ideal in situations where some flow needs to be maintained continuously and system shutdown is not an option. Minimal routine
maintenance requirements can be easily accommodated while maintaining up to 60% of the rated flow. Should a pump or motor go down it can be replaced while the rest of the system is still functioning. Contact T +44 (0)1252 816847
Bin Handling Solutions A company based in Coventry who are a supplier of pipes and valves and have extensive recycling systems where left with a small percentage of waste to dispose of. They collect the waste using 240 litre wheelie bins which are walked outside to an external Ram Compactor. Up to now the bins have been dragged up a make shift ramp and the operator physically pick up the wheelie bin and shakes out the waste. They knew this was an issue and decided to find the solution. Landfill Alternatives have now installed a moveable 240ltr bin tipper. This sits in front of the compactor charge box, the bins are pushed into the tipper housing, and pressing two buttons the bin contents are emptied into the Ram Compactor.
Landfill Alternatives are able to offer customers solutions for every aspect of their waste on site from, balers, compactors, wood loggers, bin tippers, conveyers, granulators and shredders.
If they wish to dispose of waste using the forklift, then they simply pull the bin tipper out of the way, as it is on castors, and then the forklift tips.

International stone specialist chills out & cuts costs – with help from 007 Knaresborough-based Lapicida, established in 1984 and now recognised as the world’s leading international stone specialist, has recently installed two Parker Hiross Hyperchill industrial process chillers from Thorite to provide precision cooling during stone cutting and shaping. Each of the two Hyperchill machines, both model number 007, have an air flow of 4,400m³/h and recirculate chilled water from tanks to cool the vacuum system which ‘sticks’ stone to a bed prior to being worked on. This process previously would generate temperatures above boiling point and use a constant flow of fresh water, but the new system ensures greater accuracy and is estimated to be saving around £3,000 per month in water usage costs. Thorite worked closely with Lapicida in developing the new system, which now enables marble, granite, limestone, sandstone and other materials from around the world to be efficiently cut into floor and wall tiles or shaped into

Positioning stages help reveal secrets of teeth Tooth decay is often revealed by an X-ray taken in the dentist’s chair. The image taken only reveals the presence of the problem, what it doesn’t show is what has led to the decay. Understanding the processes that occur during tooth decay and indeed repair involves researchers looking at concentrations of minerals such as Calcium present in the structure. X-ray microtomography is now helping researchers at Queen Mary University of London (QMUL) gain a deeper understanding of these underlying processes by generating high-resolution images that detail mineral concentrations in the tooth. The image generation involves scanning the tooth and X-ray detector with high precision over an extended time period. Physik Instrumente linear and rotary stages, chosen for their precision and long term reliability, have been successfully employed in this research work for a number of years.
X-ray microtomography uses X-rays to build up a virtual 3D model of an object from a series of two dimensional scans. The resulting model reveals details of both the structure and density of the tooth. By observing the tooth over time, changes in mineral concentration resulting from further decay can be monitored. This in turn helps a researcher understand how treatments work, what treatments are effective and how treatments can be managed. T +44 (0)1234 756360 www.physikinstrumente.co.uk
