Recyc-Oil, which has been operating since 1980, processes around eight million litres of oily liquid waste a year, mainly from the marine sector, generating one and a half million litres of Recovered Fuel Oil (RFO). Among the assets taken over by CSG is the waste barge Erimus Star which collects MARPOL Annex I wastes including bilge water and engine sludges from vessels berthed on the River Tees.

The Recyc-Oil facility joins CSG’s two existing waste treatment facilities – CSG Middlesbrough & CSG Wilton – to expand the company’s range of services offered in the North East. 2 Years of Excellence

Touch-less Disinfection Services have positioned ourselves in the market as specialist disinfection and decontamination providers with a system that is affordable, cost-effective and readily accessible through our UK wide team of technicians.”

Best Practice is pleased to present Sanondaf UK with its duly deserved 2 Years of Excellence profile and tell you more about the contemporary company’s successful journey as it approaches its 2nd year anniversary this June. The established organisation boasts 22 franchise areas in operation across the South East, South West, North East, North West, Scotland and Northern Ireland, and its UK Head Office (situated in Lanarkshire) was officially formed in 2014 by Stuart White. Despite being a relatively new business Sanondaf has made a significant impression across a wide sweep of industries with its touch-less disinfection solution; an eco-friendly concept which can effectively eliminate 99.99% of bacteria, viruses, mould, fungus and hazardous germs without posing a risk to humans, animals or plants. The popular process, which involves the application of a dry disinfectant mist, has been utilised in many

different environments such as care homes, hospitals, nurseries, veterinary centres, funeral parlours, laboratories, food production facilities, operating theatres, offices, restaurants and kitchens. “The Sanondaf method is completely universal and can be used by any customer as emergency treatment dealing with an outbreak or an infection but also as a preventative treatment,” Stuart explained. “We

Sanondaf’s most recent service – Sanovac – was devised in response to the reoccurring problems involving infestations (typically bed bugs and dust mites) in the leisure and hospitality sectors. As opposed to using the potentially corrosive and crude chemicals found in other solutions that aren’t wholly effective in stopping re-infestation, the Sanovac incorporates a high performance vacuum fitted with a Hepa filter for the complete removal of organic debris. Unsurprisingly, the great functionality of the group’s touch-less disinfection solutions hasn’t gone unnoticed. Over the past 18 months, Sanondaf has been credited with 4 important business awards: a Company of the Year title and the Industrial Excellence 2015 award from Best Practice, Best Company at Show from Solutions UK and selected Best New Business at

the Lanarkshire Business Excellence Awards. “Viruses, bacteria, mould and fungi can be harmful to human health and Sanondaf would challenge any UK business to review any plans they have in place for dealing with infections and outbreaks which can cause a danger to clients, staff and suppliers,” Stuart concluded. “Emergency plans can go out of date very quickly and I would ask any business to consider Sanondaf as an emergency response or maintenance provider to deal with bio-burden.” The company is pleased to run ‘The Sanondaf Challenge,’ a free-of-charge service involving the collation of environmental swabs to identify hygiene levels in different settings. Best Company at the Engineering Design Show 2015

Moulding Britain since 1972 Pentagon Plastics has been listed as the Best Company to attend the Engineering Design Show 2015.

The services, which are available to both new and existing customers looking to conceptualise and create bespoke plastic products, are fully supported by the company’s fully accredited ISO9001 quality management system, which helps to control raw materials and finished items to the necessary standards. Detailed BOM’s, dedicated routings and full stock control, meanwhile, ensure that all projects can be completed within the timescale set by the client.

In the early days, the West Sussex based business was merely a humble provider offering product development services and low volume production from basic tooling. Over four decades in the trade has enabled the brand to become a reputable technical moulder renowned in the polymer industry for its diverse range of specialised capabilities, receiving significant recognition for its attendance at one of the largest engineering shows in the UK. Operating from its freehold facility in Horsham, the plastic manufacturer of bespoke thermoplastic products offers mould tooling solutions and the repeat production of injection moulded components to a wide cross-section of customers. The group’s depth of knowledge means they can capably serve those in the medical, aerospace, construction and security sectors (to name a few examples), and this flexibility was one of the key factors drawing visitors to the stand at the Engineering Design Show last October. “This important event was definitely the right market for us to target,” Business Development’s Gabby Day told us. “Whilst at the stand we wanted to bring to the forefront our development tooling options,

2

explaining to visitors that they can test certain features of moulded products without the cost of manufacturing moulded tools. We can make sure existing components work; effectively accomplishing what each client was intending to achieve.” Pentagon Plastics’ core areas of activity – which include design assistance (material selection, tooling guidance & costings), development (prototyping & testing), toolmaking (quality manufacture), injection moulding (from single figure orders to high volume batches) and post moulding (insert fitting, drilling, milling, trimming, light assembly etc.) – also impressed the attendees who passed through the doors during the course of the two day event.

Despite appearing at the country’s most recognised engineering, electronics and embedded design event for the first time, Pentagon Plastics managed to stand out at the Ricoh Arena in Coventry as a highly memorable exhibitor. This is a massive achievement for the family ran plastic injection moulding business, especially considering the 2015 edition drew the show’s largest footfall to date. The team were looking forward to networking with industry professionals and generating further interest in their plastic moulding competencies and this was certainly possible due to the record-breaking popularity of the specialist engineering convention, as Managing Director Paul Edwards concluded, “The show was successful for us as it enabled us to secure leads with quality customers – which we have since followed up – so we would definitely return to Engineering Design Show in the future.

How secure are your contactless payment cards? A lot of false information has been published by companies that use RFID technology. Credit card companies, wanting the speed of a wireless transaction, claim it is so safe that a pin code is not needed. They have expanded RFID use into hundreds of millions of credit cards and debit cards worldwide. This has increased transaction speed and reduced transaction time, but has left cards vulnerable to electronic pickpocketing.

Lighting without Limits Here at Best Practice, we are incredibly pleased to present Pulsar Light with our highly coveted and duly deserved Commitment to Excellence profile. Located in the heart of Cambridge, Pulsar Light is a UK manufacturer specialising in the supply of premium quality LED lighting solutions. The electronic control and lighting systems – which are made for entertainment venues, commercial buildings and architectural environments – have enabled the team to complete many notable hi-tech installations around the globe. The Pulsar story began in 1966, when founder Paul Mardon built his first Sound to Light machine using valves and relays; the company itself was officially established in 1970. During the subsequent decades the team expanded, refining its product and service offering significantly whilst swiftly becoming a widely recognised market leader in the field of hightechnology lighting and control equipment. Throughout the course of its existence Pulsar has retained its prestigious position at the forefront of the industry by successfully

incorporating the latest technology into its innovative line of lighting products. This is made apparent with the company’s focus on integrated LED luminaires, which have been stringently designed for longevity, aesthetic quality and Pulsar’s legendary dependability and durability. In response to this ever-growing trend and the demand for such products, Pulsar launched its EcoRange series of products in 2013. This new line, which concentrates explicitly on high efficiency white light applications, features the increasingly popular UniBay and EcoFlood lights; specialist LED lighting fixtures with 100lm/W efficacies, a 70,000 hour L70 life and a 10 year guarantee. The Chroma range, meanwhile, comprises an array of colour-changing and single colour LED lighting solutions with outstanding colour mixing and consistency, combined with the added bonus of reducing an organisation’s carbon footprint. Because custom-fabricated LEDs are used, clients can choose from an infinite colour palette which offers soft pastels, dark hues and intensely saturated lighting effects. Pulsar’s products are meticulously developed, manufactured and tested in the company’s UK factory in accordance with the tightest international standards to ensure that they achieve the effects desired and the functionality expected of first-rate light sources. The easy to install and robust systems are then delivered with great efficiency to customers around the world; installed via Pulsar’s trusted network of outstanding distribution partners.

The company has worked on many exciting projects; installing systems at many coveted locations such as the Holy Trinity Church in Blythburgh, Cheltenham Swimming Pool, Stansted Airport and both the Millenia Tower and Centennial Tower in Singapore. Excitingly, the group even worked with Jay Z for his Magna Carter World Tour, which took place in the late 2013 through early 2014. This commission saw the delivery of 452 ChromaPanel fixtures in the short space of a month, and every unit was customised. These ChromaPanels were front and centre stage, forming a large part of the concert’s set. The order was successfully processed and fulfilled before the deadline, and what followed was a storming success: 51 sold-out shows conducted in two legs which were strongly supported by a

highly effective, robust lighting structure which performed perfectly after every tear-down and set-up. For more information about Pulsar and its impressive inventory of state-of-the-art lighting and control solutions, please get in touch with the company today. Industrial Spotlight

The Power to Transform with IPG Photonics Corporation: The Systems Division Here at Best Practice, we are incredibly pleased to introduce IPG Photonics Corporation and tell you more about the company whilst placing a heavy focus on its concentrated Systems Division. Worldwide brand, IPG Photonics is predominantly renowned for being a leading developer and manufacturer of strong performance fiber lasers and amplifiers. These contemporary and flexible products are popular across a multitude of industries – including the materials processing, communications and medical sectors – and are making waves across the globe as they effectively overrule traditional applications (as new and more operational prototypes). This significant prominence and ongoing success is supported with the company’s solid network of manufacturing facilities (located in the U.S., Germany, Russia and Italy), and regional sales offices (situated in Japan, Korea, India and the UK). These strategically placed centres enable the group to efficiently deliver solutions across the world to OEMs, system integrators and end users; since its establishment in 1990, IPG Photonics has managed to dispatch over 40,000 units to over a staggering 500 international customers. IPG’s Systems Division, located in Oxford Massachusetts, designs and manufactures complete workstations for industrial laser processing applications. By integrating the company’s fiber lasers, beam delivery and laser processing heads with precision motion and automation systems, the company provides both standard and customdesigned solutions for customers’ cutting, welding cladding and ablation applications. The mission of the IPG Systems Division is to enable users to achieve the best possible laser processing results through ensuring the availability of workstations that fully

6

embodies in a ‘standard’ workstation. One example of this is the product known as the LaserCube, a 2-D flatbed laser cutter that is optimised for small parts, and designed with a 1.25m machine bed for those customers that want a smaller or lower cost solution than the 3m or 4m bed machines that are typically available.

address the customers’ part handling and processing needs. Most frequently, the company responds to a request to assist in implementation of a new production capability by using the company’s extensive applications experience and unique portfolio of lasers to develop a robust, cost-effective laser process. Having 13 applications and process development centres worldwide, IPG usually has expertise close to the customer’s location, and is additionally able to draw on knowledge from the extended team to accelerate the development time. While the process is being developed, IPG’s automation engineers work with the customer to identify the types of parts to be machined, and the most appropriate part-handling and part motion systems to allow seamless integration into the existing production lines. The result is a combined process, hardware and automation solution that optimally meets the customers’ needs.

In a similar manner, the company has a standardised multi-axis machine that is used across the automotive component, medical device and electronics industries for welding, cutting and drilling applications. Again, responding to customer requests, the company offers the multi axis tool in both a standard and ‘mini’ configurations, allowing matching of the tool capabilities to the application. Frequently, this workstation

will be used by a customer for development purposes, with IPG providing conveyor, pallet loading or pick-and-place interfaces for the production units. In all cases, the customers of IPG’s Systems Division benefit from having a laser manufacturing solution that has the process, the laser equipment and automation systems designed and supported by IPG. If you are interested in finding out more about this single-vendor solution from the world leader in fiber lasers, then please don’t hesitate to get in touch with the team today. Product Innovation Award

Deep hole drilling systems Best Practice is extremely proud to present its richly deserved Product Innovation profile to UNISIG – the leading manufacturer of deep hole drilling systems and technologies. Continuously developing their products and services to offer the most up to date solutions, the world-leading manufacturer provides its ever-growing customer base with the tooling, accessories and automation necessary for work process optimisation. The most recent innovation is the introduction of B700 Drop Bed Machine. Designed to effectively generate the critical, high-precision features on large and irregularly shaped aerospace components such as landing gear struts, the new drilling system gives a new lift to Aerospace Landing Gear Production. One of its many benefits is its extreme flexibility which allows the

machine to process medium sized, more uniform shaped workpieces with minimal changeover time from one to another. In addition, the B700 offers an expansive working range with its servo programmable workpiece headstock capability, yet it sports a streamlined overall footprint that makes for spacesaving installations and enhanced ergonomics. The advanced machine rivals other comparable deep hole drilling machines which

are often inflexible dedicated systems as well as oversized and cumbersome. The B700 machine expands UNISIG’s extensive B-series line designed for on-center drilling of cylindrical workpieces in applications such as aerospace, defense and oil & gas. In addition to standard BTA drilling methods, these machines are also capable of counterboring, trepanning and skiving and roller burnishing processes, achieving the extremely strict tolerances required by manufacturers in these and other industries. UNISIG engineers and manufactures all of its equipment in the United States with highperformance components. The company provides machines with all necessary durable tooling and machine accessories. Upon installation, UNISIG provides comprehensive training on machine operation and application support to help customers achieve production goals. Having been founded by Entrust Manufacturing in 1995, UNISIG has since grown to become a significant name in the machining industry. Their products and services benefit a wide range of companies in the aerospace, automotive, energy and medical industries. A state-of-theart production facility and reliable network of local suppliers allow the company to design and manufacture its BTA, gundrilling, trepanning and skiving machines as well as its tooling solutions and automation. “We are continuously upgrading

our range in order to offer the most up to date technology to our customers,” commented Philipp Steimle, Managing Director of the European Sales Department. “UNISIG machines are designed with purpose for a full range of deep hole drilling applications. They are developed based on years of experience with drilling applications, customer challenges and production environments. “We are committed to continuously improving our business through investment, the use of technology and promoting a highly trained workforce.” Contact T +49 (0)7125 9687590 info@unisig.de www.unisig.de

Kite Packaging has a dedication to continuous adaption and expansion of its impressive range which includes boxes, pallets, wrapping, film, bags, envelopes, sealing, taping, pouches and much more.

their commitment to a philosophy of continuous improvement. The BRC (British Retail Consortium) accreditation is a global standard that promotes continuous improvement in operating practices. Designed to ensure best practice in handling storage and distribution of products, it provides an essential certification link between the range of BRC manufacturing standards and the end user, the retailer and the food service company. Becoming free from chemical, biological and physical contamination through identifying hazards that could take place and then following up with necessary measurements is part of the criteria Kite had to follow for this accreditation. Completion of the recent audit led to Kite successfully receiving BRC accreditation for storage.

Kite take pride in their industry with a key focus on being a truly dynamic company, they invest heavily in research and development and constantly look to innovate around improved pack performance, improved operating time and limiting environmental impact. As one of the UK’s leading suppliers of packaging, Kite also believe in taking a serious approach to industry standards and have demonstrated their on-going commitment to improving the service they provide by focusing on these standards. Having recently gained the Golden Triangle of Quality within the packaging industry through their recent BRC accreditation and having already achieved their ISO 14001: 2004 and ISO 9001:2008 Kite are showing

14

The accreditation opens up a range of benefits for Kite and their customers, it gives confidence in Kites storage and handling processes, supply chain management and is accepted as part of supplier’s approval process. The objective of the standard is to ensure that the quality and safety of products during the storage and distribution are maintained, therefore, customer confidence is upheld through audit and certification. Existing customers who require BRC certification of their suppliers no longer have to carry out an individual audit on Kite. Kite Packaging are experts in developing industry specific technical solutions for a range of sectors and work hard on developing the correct range of packaging products, tailored to the requirements of their customer base, particularly in the food and drink sector. Kite offer one of the most extensive ranges of stretch

film on the market and with the addition of new films, such as high performance and ventilated pallet wrap, Kite can provide solutions to an even more diverse range of companies. Kites High performance stretch film shows large savings if used correctly and are costeffective against traditional stretch films, manufactured using nano-technology Kites high performance films offer superior quality and protection when wrapping pallets as opposed to other films, however the cost per wrapping of a pallet is less. Kites new range of ventilated stretch film is one of the more specialist films Kite offer and suits a variety of specific industries and applications thanks to its unique properties. Kites ventilated films provide excellent airflow around wrapped pallets, eliminating the build-up of condensation and preventing the development of bacteria that can occur when using regular stretch film. Kites new range consists of 4 types of ventilated stretch film 2 for hand application and 2 for machine application. Typically used to wrap products such as fresh produce, cardboard, fresh food, paper and environments where contents are warm, Kites ventilated films have unique qualities making them ideal for a range of products. Innovative protection in the Food and Drinks industry has grown in popularity in recent years, particularly with users who are sensitive to the need for good quality, reliable protective packaging at very competitive prices. Innovation is a key focus of Kites with the recent re-launch of their boxes for bottles, taking an existing solution and innovating, the new range offers integrated internal dividers as opposed to separate ones, increasing strength and durability. The new design allows the box to be made up quicker

than traditional alternatives so is particularly suited to packing departments where speed and volume throughput is important. The new easy to assemble cardboard boxes for 70cl bottles are delivered flat packed and simply fold up, quickly and easily into their 3 dimensional shape. The integrated design of the internal divider cells mean they pop fully into place and prevents the bottles from rattling and knocking together, reducing the likelihood of damage in transit. Made from heavy duty corrugated cardboard, Kites one-piece wine boxes with integrated dividers are useful for wine retailers, home enthusiast or caterers who either store or regularly transport quantities of wine and are available with 6 or 12 dividers. Specifically designed for protecting glass, Kite Packaging’s range of Air Shock bottle packs are particularly ideal for those transporting valuable and fragile goods where there is a high risk of damage during transit. Protected by an armoured air, this lightweight solution will significantly reduce pack weight and is also available with a single outer wall box for added security and protection. Delivered uninflated, Kites Air Shock is easy to store, minimising the amount of space required. Quick and easy inflation can be done simply with compressed air for high volume users, or if you require a low volume a hand pump is ideal. DRUPA Review

Tape Application Made Easy Enimac, a leader in tape application technology, wowed its audience with its range of exceptional products and services at Drupa 2016. The world’s leading trade show for graphic and industrial print took place in Düsseldorf, Germany on the 31st May – 10th June showcasing the latest and most advanced products in the market. Joining the best in the industry, Enimac displayed some of its most groundbreaking solutions allowing visitors to test out products and see for themselves their high efficiency and unrivalled quality. The phenomenal response from existing and potential customers led to many leads for the company who predicts an exciting future ahead. With over 40 years’ experience in the tape marketplace, it is no wonder Enimac has

witnessed great success since its establishment in 2013. The Italian based company specialises in the design and production of both standard and custom tape application systems as well as standalone systems and solutions that can easily be integrated into production processes. Their standard machine line offers two revolutionary machines to eliminate the production bottleneck of applying self-adhesive tapes by hand for companies in the print and point of sale industry – the X-Treme Light and X-Treme Pro. These advanced machines automate selfadhesive tape application and provide a cost effective solution to increase productivity by up to 400%. The X-Treme light is designed for small/medium format products and can tape materials up to 1,000mm wide while its bigger brother, the

X-Treme Pro, can tape materials up to 1,600mm wide. Both machines can apply all types of selfadhesive tapes to a wide range of materials and setup times are less than 5 minutes. A new innovation for Enimac is the automatic adhesive tape application system MP41. The system’s automatic feeding is provided by BDT’s TPF-750 LT, which makes for easy feeding of diverse substrates. Two 50mm tape applicator heads with ‘e-dancer’ pre-tensioning technology apply tape where desired with great accuracy. Applicator bar height and head positioning along x-y axis are fully automated as well. Enimac was founded by Biemme Adesivi, a major tape distributor and converter who has been serving a whole host of clients since 1965. Based in northern Italy, Enimac has satisfied clients in Italy, Kazakhstan, Lithuania, Netherlands, UK, France, and

South Korea with several new countries added during DRUPA. “DRUPA has allowed us to diversity our client base even more,” commented Martin Buerger, International Business Development Manager at Enimac. “We have many customers in various industries across many different countries because we have the capability to offer individual clients the amount of automation they need. “As we are part of a tape converting group, we don’t just sell our customers automation, but complete tape application solutions. Many of the problems we have seen before and can deal with them using our years of expertise.” Contact T 0039 23287425 info@enimac.it www.enimac.it

Cable Management News

Leading Safety Upwards Skyhook GB Limited is proud to announce that in addition to its incredibly popular Skyhook and Medi Hook, it has now released three new products in the form of the Multi Hook, Extendable Tower Stands and its Skyhook Wall Cable Support.

The Skyhook GB Cable Support is

The first innovation, the Multi Hook, is very similar to the original Skyhook in the respect that its design is heavily based on this effective and convenient support system. It differs with its incorporated additional loop which allows for the accommodation of multiple cables for even greater efficiency. The fact it has another fixing point in the smaller loop enables the user to rotate it, which in turn ensures the hook can be successfully fixed to an overhead point (leaving the larger loop free to hold the larger cables in place). Meanwhile, the Extendable Tower Stand can be raised up to 3 metres in height and is made from a steel box section. With this item, multiple cables can be carried at various heights, because of the attached non-conductible plastic head. The stand is delivered in three separate parts: the base, the extendable pole with two levers and the head, all of which can be assembled

The new Skyhook Wall Cable Support available from the British company – which has been classed as a superior cable support for temporary protection purposes in the construction industry and refurb environments – effectively diminishes damage to power leads and prevents incidents of tripping over cables onsite. The ability to attach itself to a wall is particularly useful for workers, who can clearly see the bright yellow cable supports fastened in position above. Safety Management News

Safer, Stronger, Smarter Networks EA Technology has come a long way after its establishment as the UK Electricity Council’s Research and Development Centre in 1966. As a pioneer of different innovations that have contributed to the development of modern power systems across the world, the company started in a strong position and has enjoyed significant levels of progression ever since.

an internationally recognised leader of high performance edge power asset management solutions. These specialist products and end-to-end services are put into place to optimise the performance, reliability, safety and costefficiency of power assets whilst encouraging better functionality (fewer failures), greater safety and lower costs.

It was in 1966 when EA Technology became an independent commercial enterprise, yet it wasn’t a good 14 years later until the firm was fully acquired by staff. Today the brand is globally operational with its extensive network of strategically spread offices and distribution centres, serving customers in 90 countries.

Through continued innovation and investment, the market frontrunners have successfully met the requirements of owners and operators of electricity networks across the world. This varied customer base comprises organisations working within the electricity, mining, petrochemical, process engineering, manufacturing, utilities, health, defence, and infrastructure sectors. The demands of government bodies and commercial organisations are also responded to accordingly, enabling the application of smart grids and new low carbon technologies.

50 years in the trade has enabled the group to become

The asset management solution provider is an exceptional organisation in the respect that it understands there is a need for more than just compliancy with the necessary standards; it is fundamental that the management of the assets are controlled in an organised and competent manner with the stability of a designated support tool. It seems that Common Network Asset Indices are a new requirement for GB electricity network operators, and this is a factor that is readily acknowledged by EA Technology. The introduction of Common Network Asset Indices Methodology (CNAIM), the agreed methodology which helps to compose asset health and risk reports, and the influence of the RIIO regulation are key developments that need

to be considered if deliveries are set to be completed efficiently and targets are to be exceeded. Supported by EA Technology, the GB Distribution Network Operators (DNOs) submitted CNAIM for approval in 2015 in a bid to help individuals to track the management of asset health, criticality and risk for 25 separate electrical asset classes. This reporting results in a valuable dataset that rewards outperformance and penalises underperformance, shaping DNO behaviour and delivering better value to customers. The core problem with these incentives and freedoms revolves around difficulty in generating the best outcome; as each asset class is treated separately, there is no cohesive roll-up into the overall network performance across the groups, and this is where asset management

is of particular significance. Investment plans need to be risk-based with reasoning and rationale, but with hundreds of thousands of assets to monitor this is an increasingly difficult task. EA Technology’s solution is to incorporate a risk-based asset investment decision support tool, such as their Condition-Based Risk Management (CBRM), a proven platform that systematically analyses asset health, criticality and risk, while using risk to prioritise and optimise investment plans, both within and across asset classes. Managing risk and performance of electrical assets just got easier! Data Capture and Management: The UltraTEV Plus2 can capture and transfer measurements via Wi-Fi, meaning inspection staff can record data and move on to the next job. Information is then available for PD and Asset Management experts to analyse; make comparisons, look for trends and integrate into corporate Asset Management systems.

The UltraTEV Plus2 simplifies the interpretation of electrical Partial Discharge Measurements. A big step forward has been taken to understand and interpret the measurement of Partial Discharge (PD), a major cause of failure in High Voltage (HV) Electrical Assets with the development of the UltraTEV Plus2. Partial Discharge occurs in and around the insulation material on HV equipment such as cables and switchgear. The discharge is caused by gaps, voids, contamination and defects in the insulation and this is where small ‘arcs’ take place. Once this process starts, it only increases and can lead flashover and failures, so being able to detect partial discharge as early as possible has major safety, financial and security of supply benefits. PD measurements can be difficult due to the sensitivity of the measurement and environmental conditions out in the field. The UltraTEV Plus2 has been designed based on feedback

from global electrical engineers and the result is a major break-through for the use of hand-held PD instruments: Interpretation: The UltraTEV Plus2 tells the operator if the measurements are real PD or if it’s noise or interference: it sounds simple but it takes lots of experience to have the confidence to make these decisions

Industry UK

Functionality: PD measurement on cables is now possible with the UltraTEV Plus2 Brian Matthews, senior asset engineer and member of the Partial Discharge User Group, said, “The new instrument has proved very helpful in identifying genuine Partial Discharge.” T +44 (0)151 339 4181 www.eatechnology.com

New Product for Meter Reading and Energy Management The LOCK-ON Data Probe complies with the meter reading standard of IEC 62056-21 (also known as ‘1107’ and ‘FLAG’). It can be supplied with a USB, MicroUSB, RS232 or custom host connectors. This product also eliminates the alternative complex task of connecting to the electrical communication ports of many modern meters.

METMOTEC announces ‘LOCK-ON’ optical meter reading probes that enable ‘off-line’ energy meters to be easily connected to energy management systems for continuous monitoring of metered values. Traditionally probes have been attached magnetically to meter optical communication ports to enable hand held computers to obtain single readings. The unique push/twist/lock/unlock mechanical fixing method of the LOCK-ON probes provides permanent connection to the meter while also allowing probe removal if required; the port/head locating disc also permits normal magnetic attachment of other probes. There are two LOCK-ON models, the bi-directional ‘data’ version and single directional ‘pulse capture’ version.

The LOCK-ON Pulse Probe is for meters that output visible-light metering pulses; the probe connects to data loggers and pulse counters of energy management systems. The probe head is mechanically the same form as in IEC 62556-21, but there is otherwise no standard for this type of probe. T + 44 (0)1223 581571 metmotec@metmotec.com www.metmotec.com

Licence Bureau hits two million licence checks as the leading independent driving licence validation provider Bureau’s driving licence checking feature can show driver data as soon as the consent form or eConsent request is signed and received from the employee.

■■ Licence Bureau achieves milestone

two millionth licence check since being founded in 2003 ■■ Enhanced ADD service enables checks to be available on a client’s portal within sixty seconds ■■ Compliance and fleet management provider remains the leading independent supplier.

Furthermore, requested driving licence re-checks are available through the portal just three minutes after they are requested, giving customers’ a flexible and efficient service whenever they need it.

Licence Bureau has checked its two millionth driving licence following a hugely successful period of growth for the compliance and fleet management provider. Founded in 2003, the Hemel Hempstead-based company has provided a complete end-to-end compliance service for a variety of blue-chip clients including Network Rail, Severn Trent Water, Scottish Enterprise and Arriva London South. Continuous improvements to IT infrastructure and security has enabled Licence Bureau to check the same number of licences in the last 35 months, as it did in the previous 10 years. The internal investments has also enabled Licence Bureau to consolidate itself as the leading independent licence checking provider. According to the latest DVLA data, Licence Bureau checked over 400,000

licences in the 2015/16 financial year, a 29% increase, year-on-year. March also saw Licence Bureau check over 22,000 licences solely through the Access to Driver Data (ADD), the most of any independent provider prior to the Electronic Driver Entitlement Checking Service (EDECS) system being turned off. This is due to the launch of new and innovative compliance tools such as its Compliance Managed Services (CMS) portal that features everything from Driving Licence Checking to Owner Driver Management, Employee Audit, Permit to Drive, Risk Excellence, eConsent, Right to Work and Employee Screening. With eConsent now widely used throughout the industry, Licence

The milestone follows an extremely prosperous quarter for Licence Bureau, starting at the Commercial Vehicle Show in April for Licence Bureau, where they exhibited their revamped CMS portal. Malcolm Maycock, Managing Director of Licence Bureau, said, “Reaching two million checks is an extremely impressive achievement for everyone at Licence Bureau. The driver to receive the two millionth check will shortly receive a free half-day in-car training session, while the client will be offered a free driver training seminar for up to 16 drivers. “Our award-winning compliance management portal has been introduced to an ever-growing list of clients, which will allow us to strengthen our position as we target further growth.” T +44 (0)1442 430980 www.licencebureau.co.uk

Take the Sanondaf Challenge

Unexpected benefits from improved patient note security

Sanondaf, specialists in disinfection and decontamination, is urging all business owners and employers in the UK to take action now to avoid nasty surprises later. It is challenging all UK businesses to take a free swab test so everyone can see exactly what is ‘lurking’ around their desk or keyboard. Most of the time, businesses will not know they are under threat until it is too late. As an example, we have all read in the news recently about norovirus – often referred to as the vomiting bug – spreading though public places such as hotels, restaurants and even football clubs, where countless people have been struck down with sickness and diarrhoea like symptoms. Norovirus can be in the air therefore standard cleaning and disinfecting will not remove this. Why not contact Sanondaf to find out how you can stop these infections spreading? Having supplied innovative storage into medical environments, for the past 5 years, a discussion with a medical professional during a delivery highlighted a current problem. It is a common problem found in many medical environments. Our team worked jointly with a panel of medical professionals to aid our research, development and subsequent prototype testing. Our quest started, to design a workable solution with the initial aim of keeping patient notes secure, whilst having them easily accessible when required, by multiple professionals. Our trolley was to be specifically designed with the balance of security and availability of patient notes. The results have produced the

current range of UK made and designed Pro-Stak Secure Note Trolleys. One of the immediate benefits to the NHS is due to increased presence of nurses in the bays, there is a marked reduction of unwitnessed falls. As expected, a newly developed product evolves with testing in the work space it is designed to be used in. Our history of storage solutions ensures different internal storage options, suitable for the variable medical environments in which our trolleys are used. Safety matters: Providing critical power to the rail industry A large proportion of the UK’s rail infrastructure is reliant upon clean, uninterruptible power supply, yet many of the technologies available continue to be overlooked. In addition to the main power sources that must be accessible to the trains at all times, other components such as signalling systems and critical lighting in rural locations must also be reviewed. What happens if a power outage occurs and a traffic warning system fails to signal an oncoming train? As well as fundamental business implications, the safety of the general public would be greatly compromised. When less than a minute without power at a critical railway junction poses the possibility of immeasurable loss and damage, it’s clearly time for action. As a UK manufacturer, it is key that we look to continuously improve in all areas of the business so that we can compete against our competitors both home and abroad. Our staff are challenged to look at their own roles on a daily basis to see if any improvements can be made no matter how small the improvement may seem. It could be anything from moving tools closer to their working area through to replacing outdated or

Industrial Excellence

The Gas Engine Specialists relevance of CHP engines in the food sector; highlighting how the machinery can drastically decrease costs for both big brands and sizable companies by aiding waste reduction. The team are currently looking forward to attending their annual event of choice – the Anaerobic Digestion & Bioresources Association (ADBA) – at the NEC Birmingham on 6-7 July, as this showcase provides the opportunity to network with both existing and potential customers.

Here at Best Practice, we are incredibly proud to reveal that the team at CooperÖstlund has been commended with our highly coveted Commitment to Industrial Excellence profile. The Northamptonshire-based business, which focuses on the provision of dynamic and cost-effective gas engine and CHP (Combined Heat & Power) solutions for the UK’s green energy sector, was established in 2006 by Stuart Cooper and Johan Östlund. Now the country’s contractor of choice for steadfast engine equipment, the company is renowned for its aptitudes in natural and specialist gas engine sales, installation, servicing, overhauls, operations, maintenance and fault-finding. Specialising in engines, generator units and associated parts and services for CHP and the biogas market, CooperÖstlund can proficiently facilitate the needs of

any individual operating an anaerobic digestion plant. The flexible machinery provider strives tirelessly to serve its varied portfolio of customers, which includes landfill sites, food processors, hotels, leisure centres, hospitals, universities, schools, colleges and agricultural organisations across the country and beyond. “We pride ourselves on talking to our clients and offering them solutions that are the most advantageous to them,” Tony Howe, Finance Manager at CooperÖstlund, told us. “We have a faster response time than most – carrying out works in half the time it takes our competitors – because we are committed to providing quality services. Our engines are also more efficient, operating above 90% whilst traditional generation at power stations loses 40% of heat, and the use of gas ensures savings are made right away as gas is cheaper than electricity. “We stand out for our combination of knowledge, experience and application. There is no fault we can’t identify and rectify, as all of our staff undergo ongoing training and development processes in order to maintain

a strong level of technical confidence and diagnostic capability. We are also distinguishable from our competitors in the respect that we are not tied to a particular engine manufacturer (unlike many of the big players in the industry), so we are well positioned to offer truly impartial advice and support as well as supplying different machinery parts for a wide selection of engine types.”

“It is very flattering that we are frequently invited to conferences and exhibitions to talk about the importance of choosing the right engine and correct maintenance regime,” Tony concluded. “We want people to understand that choice of engine should not just be about initial cost, you also need to take into account gas quality and running costs over the long term.

In December, CooperÖstlund will be celebrating their 10th anniversary in the trade; a significant milestone which emphasises just how far the organisation has come since its establishment. The last few months have been a particularly exciting period for the Company, with the successful acquirement of a number of operations & maintenance contracts and the increase of its regional presence (with operational teams based in Scotland, the South West and Teesside in the North East).

“We are honoured to be featured in Best Practice and to be presented with this award, which we believe is a true testament to our continued hard work and efforts. We have experienced ongoing growth every year, improving on the turnover every time, which we see as a stamp of customer confidence, as it is apparent that more and more clients are reassured in their decision to invest in plant and renewable energy. We are keen to get the message out there that if anyone has a biogas or green energy problem that they can’t solve, we are only a phone call away to provide the necessary solution.”

CooperÖstlund recently attended Hotelympia at ExCel London, where they were selected to talk about the

Making decisions simpler Best Practice UK is extremely proud to dedicate its highly prestigious and industry acclaimed Commitment to Excellence profile to Leading Energy. As the need to reduce energy usage becomes greater, companies are under increasing pressure to become more energy efficient. However, many don’t have the time to access their energy usage and put reduction plans in place. Leading Energy, a renowned company in the energy saving business, was established to provide renewable energy advice to design and deliver buildings with lower carbon emissions. Owner, Cathie Eberlin, has a wealth of experience in the industry and set up the company in 2008 to share her unrivalled knowledge with those in need. “Our aim at Leading Energy is to simplify the decision making process by providing our clients with a clear road map to optimise their energy usage,” commented Cathie. “Our independent flexible approach is based on not being tied to any particular suppliers or technology. We can adapt our services easily and tailor a technical support package to suit your project. “As I have a combination of industrial and renewable energy experience, I am able to understand your business or building aspirations and deliver effective energy reduction projects. My goal is to encourage people and companies to start the conversation about energy saving and motivate them to feel enthusiastic about this topic.”

As it is critical to understand your energy consumption profile before installing a new system – Leading Energy provides renewable energy feasibility studies, conducts heat loss calculations, carries out site surveys including hydro-power feasibility studies, obtaining PV and wind energy potential, and providing project management to ensure you receive the right renewable energy technology. Offering consultancy for both commercial and domestic projects, Leading Energy’s services benefit a range of customers in affordable housing, low carbon buildings, schools, country estates, commercial offices, manufacturing and leisure facilities for renewable energy projects or energy auditing. In addition, the energy specialists works with developers, planning consultants and architects to deliver energy efficient designs that aspire to meet energy and sustainability targets. They provide help at the early stages of design to enable architects to deliver low energy buildings with integrated renewable energy technology without costly late stage changes. Leading Energy also supports BREEAM projects by optimising designs for new and existing buildings. By conducting ESOS audits for larger organisations and customising energy audits for smaller organisations seeking energy savings, Cathie ensures companies deliver results. “Our aim is to encourage people to come and talk to us and see for themselves the potential of our work,” concluded Cathie. “Just a small cost can provide big savings for your company and enable you to be in charge of your own destiny. If your company is not yet engaging in energy efficiency, we encourage you to get in touch and within the hour we could be advising you on the first steps to take to create a more energy efficient environment.” T +44 (0)1299 890185 cathie.eberlin@leadingenergy.co.uk www.leadingenergy.co.uk
