Ski jumper Eddie the Eagle, famous for his exploits at the 1988 Winter Olympic Games in Calgary, and the Mayor of Trafford Councillor John Holden, were among a host of invited guests and PHS directors for the formal launch of the new £800,000 plant. The site, located at Trafford Park, is expected to handle almost8,000 tonnes of confidential paper a year. The new shredding centre, which services the Manchester, North West England and North Wales regions, marks a significant increase in the company’s capacity to cope with the growing demand for its shredding services, and also has the potential for further significant employment opportunities in the next 12 months.

In his welcoming address, PHS Data Solutions Managing Director, Anthony Pearlgood, explained that investing in shredding facilities – the company also opened a new centre in West Yorkshire just last year – is confirmation that
more businesses are turning to PHS as their trusted third party provider to handle their confidential material safely and securely. He said: “The facility in Manchester represents another significant investment by PHS Data Solutions in destruction sites, providing our customers with the best service possible. Our business has outgrown our existing confidential shredding centre in the area. This facility gives us the extra capacity and the room for future expansion that we need.” www.phs.co.uk

Best Practice is extremely proud to present its richly deserved Product Innovation profile to UNISIG – the leading manufacturer of deep hole drilling systems and technologies. Continuously developing their products and services to offer the most up to date solutions, the worldleading manufacturer provides its ever-growing customer base with the tooling, accessories and automation necessary for work process optimisation. The most recent innovation is the introduction of B700 Drop Bed Machine. Designed to effectively generate the critical, high-precision features on large and irregularly shaped aerospace components such as landing gear struts, the new drilling system gives a new lift to Aerospace Landing Gear Production. One
of its many benefits is its extreme flexibility which allows the machine to process medium sized, more uniform shaped workpieces with minimal changeover time from one to another. In addition, the B700 offers an expansive working range with its servo programmable workpiece headstock capability, yet it sports a streamlined overall footprint that makes for spacesaving installations and enhanced ergonomics. The advanced machine rivals other comparable deep hole drilling machines which are often inflexible dedicated systems as well as oversized and cumbersome. The B700 machine expands UNISIG’s extensive B-series line designed for on-center drilling of cylindrical workpieces in applications such as aerospace, defense and
oil & gas. In addition to standard BTA drilling methods, these machines are also capable of counterboring, trepanning and skiving and roller burnishing processes, achieving the extremely strict tolerances required by manufacturers in these and other industries. UNISIG engineers and manufactures all of its equipment in the United States with highperformance components. The company provides machines with all necessary durable tooling and machine accessories. Upon installation, UNISIG provides comprehensive training on machine operation and application support to help customers achieve www.unisig.com

Metallisation and SciTeeX Deliver Successful Turnkey HVOF Project Metallisation Ltd and SciTeeX S.p. z.o.o., have recently completed a major HVOF turnkey project with B&B Coatings. Metallisation has been providing thermal spray solutions around the globe for over 90 years. B&B Coatings, based in Huddersfield, is a specialist in the application of thermal spray coatings. The company has extensive in-house manufacturing, analysis and test facilities, backed by an on-site Metallurgical Laboratory. B&B Coatings offers engineered coating solutions for a wide range of industrial applications and has extensive experience in thermal spray solutions. The new blasting and HVOF spraying facility, delivered as a result of an engineering collaboration between Metallisation and SciTeeX, has enabled B&B Coatings to expand its service offering and increase the range of thermal spray solutions to its customers. There is already an established market for HVOF coatings, which they can now tap into and offer their quality service and coating analysis facilities. With their technical background and expertise they are also able to expand and develop previously undiscovered or underdeveloped applications to offer even more quality coatings and save clients’ money. Components metal sprayed by the company include, pump shafts, hydraulic pistons for agricultural machines and presses, pump rams for slurry pumps, chutes and guides for the aluminium casting industry, wire drawing blocks and guides and pump sleeves. The unique aspect that Metallisation offer is the involvement of the customer, in this case, B&B Coatings, from the initial specification, design and installation through to the thorough after sales service and technical support. B&B Coatings chose Metallisation following extensive discussion and comparison with a number of suppliers. The attraction to Metallisation was its ability to offer the complete design, project management, installation and commissioning of the project. Together, SciTeeX and Metallisation came out on top across the whole process. The complete project included an Optiblast blast booth, spray room and extractor, as well as the Met-PCC (HVOF-L) liquid fuel spray system, an MK74 powder flame spray system and a Kuka robot. Another key attraction for B&B Coatings was the Met-PCC (HVOF-L) system due to the easy operator interface providing a reliable, repeatable mass flow control in the background. The control of the HVOF unit is via an intuitive touchscreen interface that runs on Windows OS, which was easy to integrate into the existing factory network. The system provides

full process SPC data that enables the operator to produce a ‘birth certificate’ for every job showing the parameters used at every stage of the coating. The simplicity of the METJET-4L HVOF pistol was also appealing to B&B Coatings and has since proven itself to be reliable, easy to operate and maintain. An MK74 hand held or robot mounted powder flame spray system was also supplied to enable the company to cost effectively market a good quality ceramic coating for a relatively small investment. A mass-flow powder feeder was also supplied that can feed either the HVOF or the MK74 powder flame spray pistol. Initially B&B Coatings had considered project managing and sourcing each of the items separately. However, following a detailed discussion with Metallisation it was felt that it would be more cost effective and efficient to proceed with the turnkey facility. The Optiblast blasting room has in-floor grit recovery but sits on a flat floor at the B&B Coatings site, which meant that no civil excavations were required prior to the installation, saving both time and money. The grit is recovered, cleaned and recycled automatically back to the integrated blast pot. Dust is extracted via the integrated extraction system, which combined with the high quality in-booth lighting, significantly increases the operator viewing experience. SciTeeX and Metallisation engineered the standalone spray booth and extraction system, which are produced in the factory in Poland. The acoustic spray room is 4.5m wide, 3.5m deep and 2.9m high. Particular consideration was given to the acoustic performance of the room, which is designed to reduce noise levels. This is a specific area of expertise offered by SciTeeX and it means that hearing protection is not required outside the spray room. This is an important aspect of the installation, as the HVOF process produces around 130dBa of noise. Similar high quality lighting, used in the blast room, was included in the spray booth to ensure a bright working environment. The extraction system supplied, complete with integral extraction hood, takes away virtually all of the process dust from the spray area resulting in a clean working environment but, more importantly, incredibly clean and uncontaminated coatings. A packaged water chiller was also supplied as part of the HVOF system. The chiller is a pre-assembled, self-contained, integral unit that pumps cooling demineralised water to the pistol via a water/water heat exchanger. Over 40 Years of Printing Excellence disc publishing & printing robotics, label printers & label accessories and medical slide & cassette printers. Its exceptional range of first-class label printers includes the Digital Color Label Press and Finishers (CX/FX-series), Inkjet Label Printers (LX-series) and Label Applicators (AP-series).
Best Practice is incredibly pleased to present Primera Technology, Inc. as its duly deserved Print Equipment Developer of the Year. As a spin-off from ID card printing company Fargo Electronics Inc., which was founded in 1975, Primera is a reputable manufacturer of disc publishing and printing systems boasting over four decades of refined industry experience. As the world’s leading supplier of its kind, the organisation is a global hub of activity specialising in the provision of CD, DVD and Blu-ray Disc publishing equipment, colour label printers and medical solutions. Primera’s product offering can be split into three core areas:
Because of its great flexibility and high performance promise, Primera’s trusted label printing equipment is popular with manufacturers and private labellers across different sectors. The printers and accessories have been widely utilised by those within the food & beverage, health, security, medical, commercial and industrial markets (to name a few examples). As the most recent variety, the LX2000e represents a new generation of inkjet label printer with its cost-effective separate ink cartridges and remarkable printing speeds (up to six inches per second). Suitable for desktop and heavy duty applications, the printer features BS5609 Section 3 certified pigment inks that have the ability to produce UV, chemicals and water resistant labels with great efficiency. The seamless integration of this machine was greatly

appreciated by Glashoff’s Bestes, an individual marmalade manufacturer who utilised the LX2000e to redesign the branding on its jams with the implentation of images, logos and ingredient lists of a striking print quality. Company founder Hans-Uwe Glashoff was most pleased with the result: “We are very happy with the solution Primera products give us and the price-performance ratio is really good,”
Other important clients include Bim’s Kitchen, a small family business which creates award-winning handmade African-inspired curries, hot sauces, marinades and condiments, The Chiltern Valley Winery, Brewery & B&B and Slovakian thermo-regulation specialist Planet of Health. Another notably successful case study regards Forno Bottaro, Italian bakers of sweet and savory bread, as Graphic Designer Manuela Codognotto said: “I’m surprised how quickly I can now implement my ideas with the LX900e Color Label Printer and by the many benefits of being flexible and independent.” Other testimonials can be provided in relation to Primera’s unrivalled range of disc publishing products. Key examples include the usage of the DP-4102 Disc Publisher at the Social Security Centre Thurgau in Switzerland, who was
delighted with the versatility of the product, and German photographer Ingo Schoppmann, who said: “Customers are always excited to get a CD with their photo printed on. Especially for kindergarten and schools it’s a lot easier to allocate each CD to the right child.” Primera is constantly updating its range with the introduction of new products. The company’s latest offering is its innovative Winder series, which eliminates the need for the manual un- and rewinding of labels, tags and paper. This saves a substantial amount of time for users, who can ably wind large quantities of labels across different roll core diameters. The industrial-grade winder machines offer (depending on the model) two winding modes (“label inside“ and “label outside”), heavy-duty torque engine and enhanced full-metal mandrel. If you would like any information about Primera and its equipment, all of which comes with an extended warranty of 24 months after product registration, then please get in touch with the group today. STI (Europe) at Firex International
Baldwin Boxall at Firex 2016
Safety Technology International (STI) have seen another successful year at Firex International, London Excel. STI manufacture an extensive and unique range of fire, safety and security products, many of which were on display at Firex.
Baldwin Boxall is showing several new products at Firex 2016 and so are expecting even more interest than usual. New products include the VIGIL Eclipse4, VIGIL3 transformerless amplifiers, touchscreen control microphone and a four-way toilet alarm control unit.
The exhibition is renowned for its wide variety of fire and security companies, targeting end users, installers, manufactures and distributors, and the STI stand saw this wide spectrum of visitors present this year. The stand itself, was a large extension on what has previously been seen, enabling STI to
showcase more of their unique fire, safety and security products. The most visited products on display were the range of false fire alarm protective covers, which proved to be the star of the show. The audible polycarbonate protective covers are designed to retrofit over manual call points, and provide a range of protection from minor to severe use. They are globally recognised by authorities as an essential fire system component on sites where the risk of false alarms is high, for example education, health care and housing. The polycarbonate range also includes weatherproof enclosures, an ideal solution to extend the life and reliability of call points and switches exposed to harsh conditions such as factory wash down areas and improving the fire safety of buildings and their occupants 24/7 was also on display. www.sti-europe.com

VIGIL Eclipse4, in common with its predecessors, is a wall mountable, voice alarm / public address system in a single enclosure. Excitingly, the new VIGIL Eclipse4 will use Baldwin Boxall’s latest transformerless voice evacuation amplifiers. In common with its predecessors, the VIGIL Eclipse4 will be a wall mountable, standalone voice evacuation system, providing a highly-efficient solution to the voice evacuation market.

The shallow profile of the Eclipse4 will make it ideal for mounting within a building’s risers – thus eliminating the need to take up valuable floor space elsewhere in the building. Add to this the fact that the system has outstanding networking capabilities, means that the VIGIL Eclipse4 will be the perfect solution for large, multifloor installations. Accuracy is much greater and uncertainty is much lower than was previously achievable using volumetric calibration. All the associated tanks, pumps, ultrasonic sensors, pressure gauges and temperature probes are housed in a compact and manoeuvrable temperature-controlled cabinet. Now commercially available from Litre Meter, the new volumetric low-flow calibration rig can measure any fluid type within reason and features a reverse flow testing facility.

Charles Wemyss, CEO of Litre Meter, said: “We recently introduced our LF03 low-flow VFF rotary piston meter taking the capability of our VFF flow meter range down to lower flows than ever before – for example, on a fluid with a viscosity of 10 cSt the LF03 will measure down to 0.06 litres/hour at pressures of 1 bar right up to 4,000 bar.
“As a result of this innovation the next logical step was to develop a calibration rig capable of accurately measuring ultra-low flow rates. We were so happy with the results that the decision was made to make the volumetric low flow calibration rig available on the open market.” www.litremeter.com

Saving the defence industry from What will happen to your power failure business in an hour without power? Due to worldwide defence budget cuts, the defence industry equipment suppliers are now supplying commercial grade products rather than bespoke military standard products. However, these products will still need to meet more stringent standards when operated in defence environments.
All equipment has to meet with the secure communications specifications that the military needs. For example, radio and communication systems can’t be mechanically or electrically noisy and must have low EMC levels to avoid information such as location being found. It’s therefore vital that it is high tech and very reliable, but at low cost.
in a vehicle or dropped out of an aeroplane, the military and the UPS provider have to consider all of these points.
www.hsups.co.uk
Unique conditions, such as the salty atmosphere for applications in the sea, remote power on a ship or extremely hot boiler rooms, must also be taken into account. So, for example, on a ship there are half a dozen different parameters that the UPS will need to comply with so investing in a modified solution that allows it to be fit into where it needs to go is ideal. The army gets equipment either installed in big vehicles or it’s deployed out into the field, so shock and vibration, as well as sand, rain, and other environmental issues and the environment in which the UPS is being placed are all key. Whether it’s
UPS systems can provide continuous power in the event of disruption until power is restored or generators started, protect sensitive electronic equipment against the main power issues and allow the safe shutdown of control equipment preventing damage and loss of data. What’s more, the right UPS system in place can supply power for emergency operations, ensuring processes can be halted, and provide background power for environmental monitoring, emergency lighting, voice and data communications services to allow staff to work safely within the plant. In today’s modern manufacturing environment automation and high availability production lines are commonplace. These production lines, in operating efficiently and returning the maximum output, are required to operate on a continuous basis with limited periods allowed for shut down for maintenance.

The investment in a UPS system can be offset against the costs of power failures and the effects on the manufacturing processes. Costs, including lost production time whilst power is unavailable, wasted expensive materials and damage to machines or control systems can all be alleviated.
The key resource in ensuring a constant production environment is a stable and reliable power supply. This power source provides power for motors and production line equipment, and power to support the complex control systems managing and controlling the production line.
When the stakes are high and there are tight targets to meet, there really is no question as to the importance of having a customised and ruggedized UPS in place. Businesses today can no longer afford to take the risk, and those that fail to safeguard their machinery and processes will face the consequences.

New product for meter reading and energy management ‘LOCK-ON’ optical meter reading probes from METMOTEC enable ‘off-line’ energy meters to be easily connected to energy management systems for continuous monitoring of metered values. Traditionally probes have been attached magnetically to meter optical communication ports to enable hand held computers to obtain occasional readings. The unique push/twist/lock/ unlock mechanical fixing method of the LOCKON probes provides permanent connection to the meter while also allowing probe removal if required; the port/head locating disc also permits normal magnetic attachment of other users’ probes. The probe complies with the meter reading standard IEC 62056-21 (also known as ‘1107’ and ‘FLAG’). This product also eliminates the alternative complex task of connecting to the electrical communication ports of many modern meters. Probes can be supplied with a USB, Micro-USB, RS232 or custom host connectors.

A precise sawing solution for Parker Precision Parker Precision, a highly respected West Midlands-based precision engineering company, has invested in a new automatic shuttle vice bandsaw from Addison Saws. The saw, an Everising S-250 HB-NC model, is bringing efficiencies of 60% to Parker’s sawing line and is being used to feed no fewer than 20 CNC milling machines. Originally renowned for manufacturing parts for Concorde in the late 1960s and early 1970s, long-established Parker is today best known for the development and manufacture of ultra-precise components for industries spanning the aerospace, oil, defence, electronics and medical sectors. Need to enhance sawing capability “With a growing order book, we identified the need to further enhance our ability to precision-cut heat-treated lengths of aircraft-grade stainless steels as well as aerospace alloys,” comments Parker Precision’s marketing director, Marc Corns. Speed, efficiency and exceptionally clean cuts “A senior member of our team then suggested we contacted Addison Saws. Before joining Parker he had been responsible for the purchase of two Everising machines from Addison’s and was impressed with the speed, efficiency and extremely clean cuts – all key requirements for our business – that the saws were able to provide.” Addison Saws Ltd, Attwood Street, Lye, Stourbridge, West Midlands, DY9 8RU 01384 264950 – news@addisonsaws.co.uk – co registration 4109103
A trip to see an Everising S-250 HB-NC bandsaw at the site of a local Addison Saws’ customer was enough to convince Parker Precision that the saw would more than fulfil their cutting requirements. “Having seen the S-250 saw in action, we were happy to forgo cutting trials, as we were more than convinced it would meet our needs,” adds Marc Corns. “In view of the fact that we work with a wide range of exotic materials however, Addison Saws suggested that we specified variable clamping pressure as an optional feature, in order to protect the integrity of even the most delicate tube that we cut.” Bringing considerable benefits to production Installed earlier this year, the Everising S-250 HB-NC automatic shuttle vice bandsaw is already bringing considerable benefits to production strategies at Parker Precision’s Bilston site. Significantly quicker than the saw it replaces, the Everising machine has more than halved the time it takes the precision engineering company to cut steel and aluminium into typical bar sizes of 50mm in diameter and 180mm in length. More components per billet length Accuracy, of course, is just as important as speed and here too, the Everising bandsaw is delivering advantages. “The amount of scrap material we generate has been minimised and the saw’s precise cutting action has reduced the need for deburring,” says Marc Corns. “Overall,” he concludes, “the accuracy of the Everising saw means we are achieving more components per billet and tube length – and that’s significant as it helps us to remain competitive – delivering both value and quality to our customers.”
At-a-glance, the Everising S-250 HB-NC automatic shuttle vice bandsaw with NC control: ■■ Two-year parts warranty (12 month’s on site labour) ■■ NC control of the cutting length with colour touch screen ■■ Nine programs for different cut lengths ■■ Multiple indexing with auto kerf compensation for long lengths ■■ Detachable hydraulic bundle vices ■■ Hydraulic centreless swarf remover ■■ Full stroke hydraulic vices for quick setting up ■■ Material height sensor with rapid approach ■■ 34mm wide sawblade for precise rapid cutting ■■ 2000mm roller in-feed table with vertical containment rollers ■■ Variable blade speed with inverter and digital display Addison Saws. Leading the way in sawing technology since 1956 This year Addison Saws celebrates 60 years at the forefront of sawing technology. Established in 1956, Addison Saws brought a new breed of metal cutting solutions to the UK and, in doing so, created a whole new market for bandsaws and circular saws. Today, 60 years on, Addison Saws continues to lead the way in metal cutting technologies and offers an extensive range of full CNC machine tools, from the world’s premier industrial machine manufacturers – all supported by uncompromising levels of customer care. The Addison Saws product range includes everything from simple, manually operated machines to highly sophisticated, fully automated sawing lines and has recently been increased with the addition of heavy duty 3, 3+1, 4 & 5-axis long-bed multi-piece machining centres. Addison Saws is part of the Addison Group, an organisation that also includes sawblade re-manufacturing specialist Dynashape, and tube-bending technology specialist, Tubefab. www.addisonsaws.co.uk

Union Industries has returned to its long-standing client, Tate & Lyle Sugars to install a further four high speed doors and carry out a full refurbishment of another two, at its Silvertown-based facility, which already boasts 26 Union doors.
I.T. educator sysop beta-tests the allnew ‘itil practitioner’ course
The latest order includes four Ramdoors Plus 2s, which will be used to prevent the ingress of birds, vermin, and dust, as well as keeping the cold weather at bay. All four of Union’s doors have been specially manufactured to meet the needs of Tate & Lyle Sugars. Activated by a combination of signal lights, manual controls and radar motion sensors, the extremely robust Ramdoors are made from heavy-duty materials and components, which have earned it a Class 5 certification for wind resistance. To ensure the safety of employees gaining access to the building via the Ramdoors, Union’s motion sensors come with a builtin active infra-red safety cloak feature to ensure the doors will not close
even if a static obstruction is detected in the immediate vicinity of the door openings. Complimented by Union’s highlyregarded ‘Crash-Out’ damage protection facility, which ensures the door remains operable if the heavy duty steel composite bottom beam is hit by a vehicle, the robust nature of the Ramdoor, along with its ability to withstand high wind loads, makes it the clear winner on the market for large external, high traffic use openings. The Ramdoor also comes with free entry into Union’s Lifetime Warranty Scheme, which was introduced several years ago. This cover not only provides an extensive guarantee but also includes service visits from Union’s highly trained technicians as required. www.unionindustries.co.uk

Transparent Supply Chain Management for Logistics Centers The growing quantity of transported goods keeps causing traffic jams at many transshipment points of the logistical chain. With the logistics platform AX4 which links ports, traffic and logistics centers with incoming traffic the software company AXIT has an IT solution in their portfolio which defuses the situation. In order for logistic centers and their surrounding traffic infrastructure not to become a bottleneck for incoming and outgoing flows of goods it makes sense to optimize their utilization using predictable supply control. This becomes possible by making upstream transport processes visible for a logistics center’s operations at an early stage.

Our staff are challenged to look at their own roles on a daily basis to see if any improvements can be made no matter how small the improvement may seem. It could be anything from moving tools closer to their working area through to replacing outdated or inefficient equipment. We have seen that sometimes the small changes can have the biggest impact in people’s daily roles.

Royal Mail takes a step forward in ergonomics and efficiency New equipment supplied by the Tube and Bracket Company has been introduced at Royal Mail to save workspace and reduce staff injury. Conveyors now enable operators to tip loads at a lower level. Mail is automatically dropped onto the conveyor and rolls down in front of the operators who are waiting to sort it. Bundles are picked, banding removed and mail placed into containers at the correct position to push mail away, allowing operators on the other side to pick it up and move on to the next process. Trays are returned from the back by a logistics operator to keep staff fed with containers. This has eliminated bending, twisting and lifting. Both Directors have many years’ experience working in NDT service positions, and so the business was started to further the competition in this market. At Euroteck we decided, right from the beginning, that a high quality after-sales capability would be critical to winning new business. Consequently, our prime directive has always been that we will not sell what we cannot support. By locating our factory in Tamworth, in the Midlands, we are based centrally within the UK, and close to the motorway network and two international airports ensuring that our wellequipped Field Service Engineers are able to reach the majority of our clients within a few hours, responding to emergency breakdowns in the shortest possible time. Before we agree to act as an agent or to represent a company in the UK, we carry out market research on its products and its track record in other countries. If we are happy in terms of build quality, performance and reliability, we then proceed to send our engineers for in-depth product training at the manufacturing centre. We then invest in any specialist test equipment should we not already have it within our well-equipped workshops. Only then do we begin to offer that company's products to our clients. No More Manual Rewinding of Labels For many label applications it is simply unavoidable: Labels can only be processed properly, if they are on a core – in the best possible quality and with required firmness. All manufacturers, who are printing their labels in-house and not outsourcing them to a printing house, save a lot of time when using Primera’s new RW-7 Label Rewinder as it automatically rewinds large quantities of labels.
Additionally, the RW-7 now supports three roll core diameters: 25.4mm (1”), 50.8 mm (2“) and 76.2 mm (3“), offering the flexibility to produce label rolls that fit the requirements of the finishing machine used afterwards. The maximum rewind capacity is 152.4mm (6”) by a maximum roll width of 177.8mm (7”).
The RW-7 is perfect for use with any thermal, thermal transfer and inkjet-based desktop label printer, including Primera’s popular LXseries label printers. The RW-7 is the successor to Primera’s LX-Rewinder and comes with new features. Now customers can choose between two winding directions: “label inside“ and “label outside“. Depending on the chosen direction the LED indicator on the dancer arm changes its colour.
