The smarter way to interpret Partial Discharge measurements By Neil Davies, Managing Director, EA Technology Pty Ltd Measuring Partial Discharge (PD) activity online is nowadays widely accepted by electrical engineers worldwide as an effective means of assessing the condition of live MV and HV assets. Its importance is particularly acute in an era of capital constraint and growing pressure to ensure the safety, reliability and performance of ageing assets. The interpretation of PD readings has traditionally relied on experienced engineers and technicians. They alone have been able to judge if a PD measurement indicates real problems. EA Technology has embraced these concerns to develop what we believe is the first truly smart handheld PD instrument – the UltraTEV Plus2. Like our previous UltraTEV instruments, it measures PD in the ultrasonic

and TEV ranges. However, it can now interpret PD measurements automatically and tells the user clearly what they mean. The implications are far reaching. Personnel with limited experience can be up-skilled instantly. Senior engineers and technicians – the power users – will find their jobs much easier. Everyone will be able to add value by covering more assets, more quickly and more accurately. One of the most important features of the new UltraTEV is its ability to discriminate between meaningful PD activity and a variety of noise, interference and environmental effects, which are clearly displayed as phase resolved and waveform plots. This is indeed a skill that has been developed by engineers over years. The

difference now is that anyone using the instrument can see it immediately on screen. Similarly, the UltraTEV’s ability to discriminate between various causes of PD activity. For example, the instrument will indicate if internal PD is the result of factors such as floating metalwork, or voids in insulation, because it recognises and interprets specific signals in each case. The HSE booklet HSG76 states, “Where racking is likely to be hit by lift trucks, or other vehicles, it should be protected.” Whereas the HSE do not specify to what standard the protection should meet it makes sense that the protection system installed meets a recognised standard. Home is where the market is by Robin Buxton DK Fulfilment It is clearly sensible for fulfilment warehouses to be located where the biggest online retail markets are. In the case of Europe, that is the UK and Germany, says Robin Buxton of DK Fulfilment (pictured). Given that the ability to provide the shortest order delivery time is now seen by most online retailers as being as important as the quality and price of the goods they’re

selling, it is clearly sensible for fulfilment warehouses to be located where the biggest markets are. UK consumers are Europe’s biggest internet shoppers. 13% of total UK retail sales come via online channels and this figure is forecast to rise significantly and quickly as more and more UK consumers choose to avoid what, for many, is becoming an increasingly low grade experience

Handling & Storage News

Quality new and used racking Secondhandracking.com supplies, delivers and installs second hand/ used racking and shelving at extremely competitive prices. From its head office in Leeds, the company provides exceptional services throughout the whole of the UK. Having been involved in racking for over 20 years, owner Peter Gobbi set up the company in 2010. After the credit crunch revealed a need for large, blue chip companies to reduce budgets and save money, second hand racking became a sought after product. Therefore, the company was set up to offer these companies quality racking along with an exceptional service to benefit their profit. “The perception of second hand racking is that is it not as good as new racking or is faulty, which is simply not the case,” commented Peter. “The racking we supply is taken from warehouses meaning it has already been tried and tested and does its job as it should. New racking is designed to minimize the amount of material used often this is theoretically designed. On occasions this can cause issues. Attached is an image of a beam that rotated in practice thus making the rack unsafe. Theoretically this beam was ok but in practice the product failed. The manufacturer ultimately swapped all the beams and compensated the customer but this is proof that what is important is the quality of the supplier and this is the case whether the racking is new or used.” The recognized industry body for the storage equipment industry is the Storage Equipment Manufacturers’ Association (SEMA). To be a member

8

of this body it is forbidden to promote the use of used equipment. Yet most if not all members will happily relocate a customer’s existing racking and even buy their old racking from them and subsequently sell it into used dealers. There can be no rational reason for this other than a commercial reason i.e. the members want to sell new product. Peter states, “We recently quoted an airline company for some used equipment when it was explained to the customer SEMA’s position the client found this amusing saying that they often bought second hand aircraft and within the store that they were looking to have racking installed was a quarantine area for used parts to be stored prior to being sent back for refurbishment. If aircraft can be used second hand then racking can be.” Secondhandracking.com has launched a quality assurance system known as USED Assured which gives buyers confidence that the racking is fit for purpose. The company buys equipment from warehouses that are either relocating or have gone bust, and reworks it to suit

companies requirements. Due to this, the company’s stock changes regularly, if they don’t have exactly what you need they are continuously buying stock and will keep you updated as soon as something suitable arrives. A member of the experienced sales team with a wide range of knowledge will be able to find a solution to suit your warehouse needs. The company also provides a unique plan and design service to utilise space efficiently and increase warehouse productivity. The team will visit your warehouse, measure space and decide on a design that suits you and your property. Second Hand Racking also offers rack inspections and surveys to ensure you meet industry safety standards as well as racking protection for your warehouse. “We think outside the box to suit your needs,” concluded Peter. “We have large excellent quality stock, including Link, Planned Storage, Dexion, Stow and Apex and can manage large projects and install your racking to a high standard sticking to tight deadlines. The rise in B2B mobile optimisation

For the first time ever the UK saw smartphones and tablets account for over half of online sales (51%) during the period November 2015 to January 2016 according to IMRG, demonstrating how smartphones and tablets are becoming a major component in e-commerce sales – this figure is up 40% on the previous year. Not only have mobile phones become more secure, but payment processes on mobile devices have become slicker. In turn this is encouraging companies to give serious consideration to improving the customer experience on smartphones and other devices by optimising their websites to be fully functional and user friendly on mobile devices. Mobile phones have fundamentally changed the way people shop and manage their lives, and with the increase in mobile optimisation and the arrival of larger screens, the increase in mobile usage (for purchases) shot up in 2015 after a slow down in 2014 according to IMRG. This trend has redefined marketing strategies for B2B companies, as it becomes more common for a business to conduct research into their ultimate purchasing decisions on their phones. Mobile phones and tablets are undoubtedly becoming the fastest growing sales channels, and with immediate access to company information, ratings and reviews, customers are using these devices to their advantage. Companies need to understand more than ever the power that customers now have and therefore ensure they are engaging online with them. Being able to access supplier’s product information at any time is a huge advantage to many companies, allowing them to make crucial decisions at a moment’s notice. No longer do decision makers need to be sat at a desk or making decisions during office hours, the freedom of mobile phones and tablets mean they can make these purchases as long as they have a phone or tablet to hand.

drop down menu allowing content to be placed into sub-categories that are easy to navigate, allowing customers to find the products/information more efficiently. Kites most popular products are still featured in the main body of the homepage so that users can quickly click through to purchase. Kite has also changed images throughout so that users can get a better view of the products. Mobile friendly websites clearly lead to increased mobile purchases and the Centre for Retail Research published that the UK retail industry is missing out on £6.6 billion per year due to lack of investment into its mobile offering and it is suggested that B2B mobile sales are heading in the same direction. Excentra stated that mobile optimisation for B2B businesses is now an essential update as opposed to ‘a good idea,’ however despite figures showing increases are starting to happen, there is still room for growth and improvement in mobile B2B sales. According to data from Google’s Think Insights, 29% of users cite the inability to see detailed product information on a smartphone as one of the main barriers to purchasing and without mobile optimisation customers will be very unlikely to receive a satisfactory browsing or shopping experience. In its simplest terms, a responsive design shifts the layout of your website, improving usability on a mobile so users will not have to pinch and zoom to view the information they require, it ensures it is laid out and clear for them to use and navigate to ensuring it is clear and simple to navigate. Any company with a poorly configured site for smartphones users or without a mobile optimised site, are likely to see a drop in their Google organic rankings on mobile devices. In 2015, Google announced that they were expanding their use of ‘mobile friendliness’ as a ranking signal, for sites that were not mobile optimised. This change could potentially lead to companies losing Google mobile search ranking due to their websites not being mobile optimised.

The website has been given a complete makeover, boasting a slicker design with fresh looking pages to give a more modern appeal. Kites signature green is visible throughout the site, complimented by grey and white for a clean and simplified look. Mobile optimisation and functionality have been the key considerations in this impressive re-design, managed and implemented by Kites in house team. The new feature will now see customer’s comfortably shop on a smartphone, tablet or desktop and receive the same positive user experience. As part of the re-design, the text size has been increased, and the team have developed a left navigation tab which incorporates a

‘Related product’ is another area which has been developed to improve the customer shopping experience, saving customer’s time when shopping on the site, along with the re-development of the product pages. This will support customers in finding product information, guides and demonstration videos they need more effectively. Integrated throughout, the functionality has been improved, particularly in areas such as the basket which incorporates a better layout and information on how other customers complimented the product with an ‘other customers also bought’ feature, allowing customers to see other items they may truly be interested in or require. As well as the existing product search tab and searching by size feature which can be found above the navigation bar, Kite have now incorporated a conversion tool on the top right of the homepage, this allows customers to enter any dimension in to the box which will automatically calculate the conversions. Kite have also worked on improving customers size search in the product tables, selected tables now incorporate the option for customers to view particular products in a range of different dimensions. Kite has incorporated an express checkout, allowing users a fast and easy way to purchase without having to register beforehand. P.J Hare Ltd is a leading manufacturer of hydraulic and hydro-pneumatic presses in the 1 Ton to 250 Tons force range. Based in the UK, they are a significant supplier to the automotive industry, supplying presses for everything from pushing clinch nuts and clinch studs into body panels to assembling bushes and bearings into suspension arms and wheel hubs respectively. Their strength is the ability to design and manufacture complete tooling solutions with the press that can guarantee 100% pass rates. This is achieved by intelligent tooling incorporating features and sensors to ensure part presence and correct part loading, transducers to ensure forces and positions are correct and bespoke software to bring all the control together. They have even incorporated multi-camera vision systems for full product validation. However, you would be wrong to think that P.J Hare is just about the automotive sector. They supply presses and tooling solutions into the aerospace, defence and general engineering sectors, and even the food industry. Applications include pressing, stamping, drawing and compression moulding, all of which need controlled delivery of force and bespoke intelligent tooling. Compression moulding is a particularly interesting area requiring accurate temperature control of the platens in order to cure composite resins or form thermosetting plastics. P.J Hare have already supplied a number of presses into this area and see it as a key growth potential.

MACH Show Review 2016

Banner Chemicals Group Ltd, Precision Cleaning Solutions Since Samuel Banner invented and patented White Spirits over 150 years ago, Banner Chemicals Group Ltd (www. bannerchemicals.com) has been the UK’s leading distributor and developer of industrial cleaning technologies. The MACH 2016 show was a timely event as many UK factories were looking for drop-in replacements for trichloroethylene (TCE) solvent. Fortunately Banner was on hand offering the widest variety drop-in trichloroethylene replacements for vapor degreasing. Perklone® MD solvent which is the highest quality perchloroethylene was Banner’s most popular alternative to trichloroethylene. The high boiling point reduces solvent consumption and the low per litre cost make it economical. It is excellent for removing high melting point residues such as buffing compounds and waxes. Solvex® HD is a unique, patented environmentally and operator friendly fluorinated vapor degreasing solvent that is currently being used for high-end precision cleaning applications in medical, electronics, aerospace and automotive manufacturing applications.

UNISIG Drilling System gives new Lift to Aerospace Landing Gear Production UNISIG, the leading manufacturer of deep hole drilling systems and technologies, engineered its new B700 Drop Bed machine to effectively generate the critical, high-precision features on large and irregularly shaped aerospace components such as landing gear struts. systems courtesy of highly skilled engineers and the subsequent build, commission and aftersales support (in the form of designated maintenance services) of said structures.

Based in Crowborough, East Sussex, Baldwin Boxall is a UK manufacturer of life safety sound systems; namely, voice alarm systems (otherwise known as voice evacuation, VACIE), public address systems, microphones, disabled toilet alarm products and Emergency Voice Communication (EVC) systems (fire telephones, disabled refuge and roaming telephones).

“Our products are designed and built to a very high standard with longevity in mind, always,” Alison Cousins, Marketing Manager at Baldwin Boxall, explained when asked about the company’s core strengths. “Our innovations do have unique features when compared with the prototypes available from our competitors, but above all, we stand by our reputation as one who really cares. In fact, our support and technical backup is renowned throughout the industry.

The company was established in 1982 by its four founding directors Terry Baldwin, Patricia Baldwin and Dave & Dawn Boxall. In the decades that passed the team of knowledgeable experts have successfully managed to build an enterprise with great longevity and reputability, working from one site to deliver a vast range of specialist solutions to a multitude of clients. The dedicated R&D, sales, projects, specials, assembly, test, quality, packing and despatch teams strive to provide a comprehensive service, catering to the demanding needs of customers from the original consultation to the project completion. “A recent customer survey has confirmed that this is so with quotes like ‘As good as it gets,’ and ‘To Baldwin Boxall the customer matters.’ We have performed consistently well and are seeing a very healthy growth pattern at the moment, having employed three new staff over the last six months with two more in the pipeline. Our expansion is set to continue with the company following a clear five year plan; we are currently developing the next generation of voice alarm products – this will be known as VIGIL3 – because we never stand still and are continually looking for ways to enhance our product ranges.” The company’s latest addition is its disabled

The organisation impressed industry specialists in abundance whilst attending FIREX, as Alison told us here at Best Practice: “This year’s exhibition was very successful for us. Our new stand, which included a meeting room and a separate hospitality area, received some very favourable comments from visitors. The showcase provided us with the chance to meet with existing customers whilst networking with some very interesting people with potential new projects for the future. “As the main show for us to attend (given the industry that we are in) we attend FIREX annually, and this year we had a lot to talk about. The stand showed some of our new products – the DTA4 toilet alarm control panel, Eclipse4 wall mountable voice alarm/public address system and VIGIL3 transformerless amplifiers. We also used the meeting room to discuss our plans for the future with clients, which evoked real interest. Overall we received positive feedback from end users, installers and customers alike.”

Best Company at Firex Expo – Fire Safety Products

Changing the Face of the Building Surveying Industry Bolster Systems Limited has been listed as the Best Company specialising in Fire Safety Products to attend Firex 2016, we are delighted to inform our readers at Best Practice.

and for its nomination for the Passive Fire Innovation of the Year 2016 award (Product or Service). The most recent success for the team, however, was their presence at FIREX 2016, as Wesley told us, “Since attending this particular convention uptake has been steady for us here at Bolster Systems. A number of prospective customers – in the form of large organisations – have already looked to subscribe, along with several passive fire installation companies. The exhibition was incredibly useful for us in terms of getting our name out there and showing existing subscribers just how serious we are about what we are doing.

In July 2014, co-founders David Hickson, Wesley Donlon and Christopher Goodison joined forces to establish Bolster Systems, a specialist software company based in Manchester’s Trafford Park. Focusing specifically on surveying technology and apps for the passive fire protection and asbestos sectors, the organisation encourages absolute construction compliance and optimised asset management. “We develop and provide software to assist in the maintenance, installation and management of life safety systems (passive fire protection) whilst offering solutions related to the surveying and sustainment of building fabric for facilities management companies, surveyors and builders owners,” explained Company Director Wesley Donlon. “This ensures that these individuals and companies remain fully compliant with current legislation. With a philosophy that revolves around support, reinforcement and strength, we are pleased to stand out from our competitors by providing the complete surveying, installation and management solution.” With his background in programming – as a computer science (MIT) graduate from Salford University – and his great expertise in construction (courtesy of his career), Wesley was well positioned to successfully develop the Bolster system, which incorporates both technical intelligence and building-based health & safety protocol. The simple yet functional applications provided by Bolster Systems ensure trade professionals can optimise and automate everyday tasks with great efficiency, driving all data to an online, Cloud-based data storage platform.

“Our main reason for attending was to promote our products and brand awareness, although offering support to current clients was also important. We got lots of great feedback from fire professionals and existing customers whilst showcasing our passive fire protection and fire door app; most were shocked by the capabilities of the system! We are happy with how FIREX went for us and are looking forward to attending again – we have already booked our space at the next edition.”

L-R: Chris Goodison (Director), David Hickson (Director), Debbie Hamnett (Financial Director), Brian Good (Technical Director), Lydia Morris (Admin) & Wesley Donlan (Director) receiving the Best Company at Firex Expo Award This means fire-stopping documentation processes are simplified and information collation is streamlined with real-time work surveying, providing clear insight into onsite conditions so any necessary actions can be taken for immediate effect. Glad Hand Lockout Device helps immobilize trailers When loading and unloading articulated trucks and semi-trailers, drivers of loading vehicles and fork lifts are at risk of injury if the truck they are loading pulls the trailer unit away from the loading dock before the loading/unloading is finished. In such instances, the fork lift truck can crash down into the gap between the loading dock and the trailer unit. This hazard can be readily avoided by immobilizing the trailer unit during loading and unloading. Disconnection of the air line between truck unit and trailer causes the trailer brakes to lock on. The brakes won’t release until air pressure is restored by reconnecting the air line. This can be

When is a particle not a particle? In the following article, Jim Mills from Air Monitors explains his answer to this intriguing question. Particulate matter (PM), like beauty, is in the eye of the beholder, and by that I mean that the measurement of PM often depends on how you measure it. A wide range of PM monitors are available, so it is important that the monitor fits the task. For this reason, Air Monitors offers a monitor for almost every PM monitoring application, each of which will be discussed briefly below.

expensive, so there is a need to supplement national networks with a higher density of monitors which may be less accurate but still meet the requirements of the specific application. Consequently, lower cost monitors such as AQMesh and TSI’s Environmental Dust Trak have been developed that offer the ability to measure ambient particulates without the capital and operational costs of reference stations.

Reference/Equivalent Monitoring of PM10/PM2.5 The TEOM/FDMS continuous ambient particulate monitor measures either PM10 or PM2.5. Both have MCERTS designation and DEFRA approval for both fractions.

Black Carbon Most PM measurements provide a mass concentration output and thereby assume that all particles are of equal significance. In reality this is not the case because some of the particles are relatively benign from a human health perspective or are not anthropogenic so are of less interest from an air quality management perspective.

Nikuni VDF Hydrocyclone Separators A&M is the exclusively authorised EU distributor of Nikuni VDF hydrocyclones, which provide the proven element-free method of removing metallic contamination in machining, cutting and forming cooling liquids used in machine tools. Nikuni VDF hydrocyclones will remove as much as 95% of aluminium particles at 10μm and above in one pass, and the product comes with a whole host of operational pluses; increased equipment life, eliminating filter element replacement, reduced machining costs and a better surface finish often in a reduced cycle time being the main examples. One major benefit of the Nikuni VDF hydrocyclone is that it can act as either a standalone product or a component for integration within an existing system. This simple product, which uses centrifugal force to separate metallic contaminants from fluids, is well established across the Far East and the USA and is currently experiencing a demand in Europe as it is of great interest to many companies involved in CNC machining and precision grinding who wish to reduce this element of their operational costs. Nikuni’s VDF hydrocyclones ensure coolants fed to machine tools are cleaner whilst avoiding the frustrations surrounding downtime from blocked filter elements. It is normal for a Nikuni VDF to achieve payback for its installation in a short space of time, because the need for conventional filter maintenance is removed along with the cost of repeated filter element replacements. Furthermore, the optimisation of performance and improvements in productivity are within the reach of all sizes of organisations spanning multi-nationals to single unit installations. © Aeration & Mixing Ltd 2016

Bowers Group has announced the release of a new range of micro hardness testing machines from Innovatest. The Nova 130/240 series of Micro Vickers and Knoop hardness testing machines offers a versatile and userfriendly solution for a wide range of micro-hardness testing applications.

Even highly complex workpieces can be machined highly productive and comfortable in one setting. The drilling and milling can be carried out on all four sides of the workpiece. Thanks to the thoughtful design features, also the tight tolerance requirements of complex shape profiles can meet. For example, the machine does feature a stiff B-axis table, especially designed for high weight and moment load. This supports high accuracy and rigidity for machining of different sides of workpieces at different sizes and shapes at any angle. Since the respective workpiece has to be clamped only once, time-consuming set-up times for configurations and setups are eliminated.

The Nova 130 features a three position turret which includes one indenter position as well as a 10x and 40x objective. The Nova 240 is well equipped for more demanding applications, featuring a four position turret including one indenter position, as well as 5x, 10x and 40x objectives.

So far the production process in mold making consisted of the interaction of many demanding individual machining steps that had to be laboriously prepared, precisely matched and configured. Many different machine and tool settings that often caused human error did cost time and money. The key to increasing productivity was therefore in the use of machines specifically designed to reduce the time-consuming production steps, with a simultaneous increase in the quality and accuracy and substantial avoidance of operator errors. To be able to provide users with an optimal solution, UNISIG developed the multifunctional processing centers of the USC-M series. Equipped with the latest technology, the new machines meet the specific requirements of large molds in terms of materials, dimensions, complexity and tolerances. They allow the mold maker to perform quality precision machining, precise 5-axis positioning, deep drilling and milling on a single machine.

Hard facts

Both units include USB output, up to nine dial selectable test forces and a full colour touchscreen with interaction dialog support which informs the user about the current status of the device, including instructions on performing one or more tests. The user is lead step by step through the handling of the tester by the intelligent dialog system, and the bright colours on the display clearly inform the user of the test results.

To optimize production processes in mold making, the American manufacturer UNISIG has developed the USC-M drilling and milling centers. A single machine carries out multiple processes in one workpiece clamping, thus reducing the time-consuming individual setup steps. When combined with the efficiency of the BTA deep hole drilling system, it considerably shortens the production time in mold making. Simultaneously, the machine increases the quality and precision of the workpieces in dynamic processes and contributes to an overall higher competitiveness of the user.

Bowers Group represents Innovatest’s range of hardness testers in the UK and Ireland, and the Nova 130/240 series is the latest addition to the wide selection of hardness testing machine offered by the Group. Contact www.bowersgroup.co.uk

For high efficiency in processing, the roughed workpiece is clamped on the table with modular clamping elements. The workpiece is the machined on all four sides and drilled at very high feed rates with high-performance gundrills and BTA-tools with up to 7-times tool feed. And within the same setup and clamping, is also possible to perform multiple angles, holes, cross holes and distinctive complex pocket and surface milling, accurately

and effectively. A probe can verify critical dimensions. The mold maker saves valuable production time by days. The preferred use of the USC-M series deep hole drilling and milling centers is the production of large steel molds. Here highly reliable, precise working machines are required, which in addition to the deep drilling, allow for further processing operations. Currently, two machine sizes are available: The USC-M38 can machine and deep drill work pieces of up to two meter length in a single setup. The larger USC-M50 can machine up to three meter long workpieces. Both machines are designed for the use of

single flute gundrill tools and the more efficient BTA high performance deep hole drilling tools for waterline holes. In combination with the second independent CAT50 machining quill this allows the execution of all drilling and processing functions within the operating range of the machine. The machines feature a 360o workpiece table and independent programmable drilling and machining spindles. The spindles can pivot with 30o downward and 15o upward. They allow high processing speeds of up to 10m/min. All manufacturing processes of CNC machines are continuously monitored and automatically interrupted in critical situations. The machines can be upgraded for unattended operation with an automatic tool changer with up to 120 tool positions, a laser tool pre-setter, a workpiece probe and an automatic pallet changer. For highest accuracy, glass scales for direct position feedback and volumetric compensation are available. Contact T +49 (0)7125 9687590 info@unisig.de www.unisig.de

Switch to CEJN to save energy

SPP Pumps chosen for world’s biggest refinery project

In today’s energy conscious market CEJN is becoming the smart choice for those companies looking for savings in the production of compressed air.

SPP Pumps, a leading designer and manufacturer of centrifugal pumps and systems is providing 24 pumps for the largest refinery in the world, under current construction in Jazan, Saudi Arabia.

Compressed air is a very expensive but important resource and there is an increasing awareness that there are big opportunities to save time and money in its delivery to tools and machines. 1) It is a fact that every 1 bar in pressure drop across a pneumatic system that you AVOID saves 10% running cost at the compressor 2) Pressure drops are everywhere and from experience mostly in the order of 2 to 4 bar from the outlet pipe to the tool, particularly if the fittings are old 3) Compressor costs are huge and we have seen bills running into millions. Multiply points 1, 2 and 3 and you can see huge potential savings if you can reduce pressure drop. Typical Example: Assume a pressure drop of 3 bar and compressor bill of £200,000 in the current installation. If using CEJN you could reduce the pressure drop to 0.3 bar this would

result in big savings i.e. 10% x 2.7 bar x £200,000 = £54,000 saving every year! The test is free and you get a scientific report. Contact: grant.chaplain@cejn.com to take the test. T +44 (0)1885 485999 info.uk@cejn.com www.cejnuk.com

The pumps have been specified by Air Products, one of two joint owners of the giant complex that will supply 75,000 metric tons per day of oxygen and nitrogen to the Saudi Aramco refinery. The other joint owner company is Acwa Holdings. The 12km2 Jazan refinery site will eventually produce 80 million barrels per day of petroleum, 250 million barrels per day of diesel and over one

The story started over 40 years ago when the then British Waterways Board, the custodians of the inland waterways of the UK, made it a requirement for all hire boats on their navigations to have a closed toilet system installed rather than

24

Having spent the early years providing the toilets, tanks, pumps and all the system ancillaries for the boats it became obvious to the hire boat companies that there would be a requirement for some efficient, wellengineered solutions for the effective removal of the waste from the boats. Hire boats had been using various methods of discharging boats with very little success costing both time and money. LeeSan took up the challenge and can now offer solutions to marinas that provide a service for all types of vessels from small sailing boats to the biggest of Superyachts. Contact www.leesan.com

Guardian24 – the UK and Ireland’s leading lone worker protection provider have been entrusted to protect Gateway Family Services’ outreach staff via Smartphone apps.

New equipment supplied by the Tube and Bracket Company has been introduced at Royal Mail to save workspace and reduce staff injury. Conveyors now enable operators to tip loads at a lower level. Mail is automatically dropped onto the conveyor and rolls down in front of the operators who are waiting to sort it. Bundles are picked, banding removed and mail placed into containers at the correct position to push mail away, allowing operators on the other side to pick it up and move on to the next process.

When a joint can cost the same as up to 40m of PE pipe surely a new, cleaner and more easily monitored and accessible system that is readily available makes perfect environmentally efficient and cost-effective sense.

As a Community Interest Company, Gateway Family Services works with the NHS and Local Authorities to provide health and well-being services to communities in Birmingham and the West Midlands. These services are delivered by Pregnancy Outreach Workers and Health Trainers, who give one-to-one advice to clients in the community; often working alone which puts them at greater risk should an incident occur.

A new model of the AZM300-AS alongside the AS-i-Power will be launched in autumn 2016. The AUXPower version enables a safe unlocking function at the highest safety level, PL e. The world-leading AS-i fieldbus standard allows both non-safe and safe switches, sensors and interlocks to be wired safely and cost-effectively. This means connecting to the AS-i safety network has many benefits for users of safety switchgear: quick installation and commissioning, comprehensive diagnostics functions and high levels of flexibility when it comes to adapting safety functions to the application. The RSS260 from Schmersal is one of the smallest RFID safety sensors on the market with a wide range of applications thanks to its compact design and different targets. With its two approach directions and it’s very small dimensions (40 x 18 x 30mm) and with the right combination of sensors and targets, the RSS260-AS is suitable for fitting in aluminium profiles and for use in a

Sysop to help Aintree University Hospital improve its IT People and Processes IT educator and consultant Sysop is to help Aintree University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust (‘Aintree Hospital’) improve its major incident response as well as running accredited SDI Service Desk Institute and ITIL service management courses for its IT people. Aintree Hospital provides all the acute services for the region and employs around 4,000 staff including seventy IT and telecoms people. “This investment is all about improving what we do here and Sysop’s services are something of a one-stop shop for us, providing everything we need,” says Aintree Hospital Head of IT John Speight. “Sysop are one of the few companies that are prepared to deliver training on-site, which in my view makes best use of staff time. They are also very price-competitive. “A Sysop consultant ran a major incident workshop for our senior managers, which helped us to review what we have in place for any major incident response in the event of core system failure, looking

at improvements we could make in key areas such as systems recovery and communication with others across the organisation. We are now making the process and procedural changes we need to be more responsive, 24/7.” Sysop’s work for Aintree Hospital follows its recent appointment by the North West Skills Development Network which facilitates professional development for 4,500 NHS informatics staff across Lancashire, Greater Manchester, Cheshire and Merseyside. ‘ITIL Practitioner’ course put to the test IT educator Sysop has beta-tested standards organisation Axelos’ new hands-on ‘ITIL Practitioner’ (2016) course with a group of seasoned IT professionals, to make pre-launch classroom adjustments and to ensure that the course and its examination are fit for purpose. As a result Sysop believes that it is ideally placed to set the best-in-class ITIL Practitioner (2016) education standard. “We firmly believe this new, highly practical course is the missing piece of the ITIL jigsaw,” Sysop MD and consulting lead Stuart Sawle said, “The other ITIL courses all focus on IT Services Management theory, whereas this one concentrates on the practical – how to do ITSM. The whole thrust of the course is to allow its students to learn from each other. Less than a third of the course timetable is made up of lectures – the bulk of the course consists of practical exercises, case studies and discussions.”

28

With an 83% pass rate, Sysop’s beta-course was well received by its participants according to the company, though it has also made a number of improvements as a result. Sysop has taken a decision to run its ITIL Practitioner (2016) course over three rather than the guideline two days “to allow practical learnings to be fully absorbed.” Contact T +44 (0)1706 361110 www.sysop.co.uk

Transparent Supply Chain Management for Logistics Centers The growing quantity of transported goods keeps causing traffic jams at many transshipment points of the logistical chain. With the logistics platform AX4 which links ports, traffic and logistics centers with incoming traffic the software company AXIT has an IT solution in their portfolio which defuses the situation. In order for logistic centers and their surrounding traffic infrastructure not to become a bottleneck for incoming and outgoing flows of goods it makes sense to optimize their utilization using predictable supply control. This becomes possible by making upstream transport processes visible for a logistics center’s operations at an early stage. “Information in advance on expected shipment volumes makes it easier to dispatch available resources at the logistics location and to best utilize transshipment capacities,” Holger Schmitt, AXIT’s CEO, describes the IT solution’s principle. “Movements of goods within and outside the transshipment location become transparent and can thus be managed better – without traffic jams

Mate’s new SuperMax tool coating answers today’s requirements for high performance, longer lasting punch press tooling. Providing a hard, wear resistant and lubricious coating, SuperMax acts as a barrier between the punch and sheet metal, greatly improving stripping and extending tool life. TM

A propriety coating, SuperMax provides more hits between sharpening, which reduces machine downtime. SuperMax also reduces galling, slug pulling and corner breakdown enhancing the quality and efficiency of the punching process. Outperforming currently available premium coating by 2 to 8 times, SuperMax is applied using the very latest nano-layer technology. It is a harder, denser film that greatly increases wear resistance and a much lower friction co-efficient of approximately 20%. This lower friction

means less heat build-up, less galling (adhesion) and much longer tool life. For more information on what SuperMax tool coating can do for your punching operations, in USA and Canada call: 1800 328 4492. Outside USA and Canada: 1763 421 0230. Visit: www.mate.com

The winch will be used to moor the turbine to the seabed via a four-line mooring system. In tests, the CWB-800 pulled 75t on core layer and withstood an 80t brake test. This month North Sea Winches is delivering a range of winches, including an Active Heave Compensation Winch, a Constant Tension Winch and numerous capstan winches along with controls and power units to be utilized in the offshore wind farms and cable laying installations.

“Over the last five years, we have invested heavily in new plant and equipment, such as the very latest CNC machinery, so we can meet demands for more powerful, more sophisticated systems and even shorter lead-times. “In that time, we have also grown steadily and the number of our staff has increased. The business is definitely going in the right direction. We are one of only a few winch manufacturers in the UK and my aspiration is for the company to continue to grow and develop a global presence.” T +44 (0)1723 584080 sales@nswinches.co.uk www.nswinches.co.uk

Vacuum packed cheese blocks needed to be transported downwards at a rate of 40 per hour without damaging the plastic and losing any product lifetime. However, because of the enormous de-elevation required, traditional conveyors were not an option. Platform elevators could also not be used because of their low throughput capacity. A spiral conveyor was be the ideal solution for throughput and gentle product handling, but the challenge for a spiral conveyor was the minimum space that was available between the construction beams in the various floors.

This was found to be too narrow for conventional spirals. However the AmbaFlex SpiralVeyor® SVs platform, which was chosen, has a 140mm wide belt and only requires a diameter of 1,240mm, and so fitted in. This machine comes from the Spiralveyor SlimLine programme and is especially designed with a small footprint to overcome space issues in packing areas. The total elevation required 19.5 spiral windings and that is at the higher end of what is possible, even for AmbaFlex. Fortunately, the patented Triple-E conveyor belt technology with 100% rolling friction makes such a number of windings possible in one go with one belt.
