Today’s advanced, targeted cyberattacks use weaponized files in attachments with a huge success rate. File-based threats involve hiding malware or malicious code within a common file-types, such as Word, Excel or PDF files. Conventional security controls such as firewalls, AV, and more advanced dynamic network sandboxes are ineffective in dealing with these types of threats as they only identify known threats or are unsuccessful in identifying structural exploits in the files. The security industry’s attempt to defend organisations by classifying known bad e.g. signatures or heuristics, is not succeeding, and the industry has turned its focus from prevention to post infection detection and breach mitigation. Glasswall is different and reverses the paradigm of current malware security instead of looking for signatures, Glasswall ‘looks for good’ and validates files by conducting 1,000’s of conformance checks at byte level against the manufacturers design specification.

Earlier this year, the EU issued the New PPE Regulation (EU) 2016/425 designed to help improve health and safety work practices. While existing legislation ensures the highest level of safety protection, the new European PPE Directive 2016/425 will see the re-categorisation of some products over the course of the next two years. Sangeeta Aeri, Technical Manager at Supertouch explains. In March 2016, the new European PPE Regulation (EU) 2016/425 was approved by the European Parliament, meaning that the PPE Directive 89/686/ EEC is repealed on 21st April 2018 – resulting in a number of significant changes for the PPE market.

Touch-less Disinfection Services Sanondaf is the only decontamination franchise in the UK specialising in the disinfection and decontamination markets using revolutionary and completely touch-less disinfection technologies. Their extremely advanced touch-less disinfection system actively kills 99.99% of harmful bacteria, viruses, fungi and mould. Although the company is just 2 years old in the UK, they have achieved national coverage with 30 operational territories covering all parts of the UK and Ireland. As well as this, their international growth is also substantial, as they have now commenced operations in Central and South America, Singapore and Thailand, and are due to launch in South Africa in December. “The Sanondaf method is completely universal and can be used by any customer as emergency treatment dealing with an outbreak or an infection but also as a preventative treatment,” commented Director Stuart White. “We have positioned ourselves in the market as specialist disinfection and decontamination providers with a system that is affordable, cost-effective and readily accessible through our UK wide team of technicians.”
The eco-friendly, touch-less disinfection solution from Sanondaf involves the application of a dry disinfectant mist which has been utilised in many different environments such as care homes, hospitals, nurseries, veterinary centres, funeral parlours, laboratories, food production facilities, operating theatres, offices, restaurants and kitchens. Disinfectant fogging provides certainty that an entire environment, room or space has been treated and this includes all surfaces,
difficult to reach areas and of course the air itself which can contain airborne pathogens, this is the gold standard of disinfectant techniques and eliminates manual error from this vital task of protecting people’s health. Unsurprisingly, the great functionality of the group’s touch-less disinfection solutions hasn’t gone unnoticed. Over the past 18 months Sanondaf has been credited with 4 important business awards: a Company of the Year title and the Industrial Excellence 2015 award from Best Practice, Best
Company at Show from Solutions UK and selected Best New Business at the Lanarkshire Business Excellence Awards. “Interest in touch less disinfection is at an alltime high as more evidence emerges from the hospital sector about the inefficiency of manual cleaning when trying to combat the ever increasing threat of infections and in particular antibiotic resistant infections which ultimately can result in the loss of life,” Stuart explained. “Only this week the United Nations produced a declaration signed by 193 countries to specifically formulate an action plan for dealing with drug resistant infections and super bugs. In the UK a target has been set to reduce the incidence of high risk bacterial infections in hospitals by 50% by 2020 and this will not be achieved using traditional manual cleaning techniques.
Sanondaf touchless disinfecting solutions
“Viruses, bacteria, mould and fungi can be
harmful to human health and Sanondaf would challenge any UK business to review any plans they have in place for dealing with infections and outbreaks which can cause a danger to clients, staff and suppliers. Emergency plans can go out of date very quickly and I would ask any business to consider Sanondaf as an emergency response or maintenance provider to deal with bio-burden.” The company is pleased to run ‘The Sanondaf Challenge,’ a free-of –charge service involving the collation of environmental swabs to identify hygiene levels in different settings. Cleanroom, Hygiene & Sanitation News
Lee Sanitation: A lifetime in the ‘Business’ toilet system installed rather than the time honoured tradition of pumping the waste overboard and into the canals and rivers. The hire boat industry and the boat owners needed solutions and so from this point LeeSan was born.
You could be forgiven for thinking that Lee Sanitation are the new kids on the block when it comes to providing sanitation for the portable industry. The truth is the Company has a long history in supplying solutions for mobile welfare. The story started over 40 years ago when the then British Waterways Board, the custodians of the inland waterways of the UK, made it a requirement for all hire boats on their navigations to have a closed
Having spent the early years providing the toilets, tanks, pumps and all the system ancillaries for the boats it became obvious to the hire boat companies that there would be a requirement for some efficient, well-engineered solutions for the effective removal of the waste from the boats. Hire boats had been using various methods of discharging boats with very little success costing both time and money. LeeSan took up the challenge and can now offer solutions to marinas that provide a service for all types of vessels from small sailing boats to the biggest of Superyachts. www.leesan.com

50 Years of Excellence
Safer, Stronger, Smarter Networks for 50 Years We are delighted to announce here at Best Practice that EA Technology has been commended for its great worth and longevity in the trade, having deservedly achieved our prestigious 50 Years of Excellence award. We are therefore presenting our readership with a devoted company profile detailing the company’s previous movements and upcoming ventures. The recognised asset management solution supplier recently marked this impressive milestone with a dedicated open day, which took place on the 16th September. Held in Capenhurst from 9.30am – 1pm, the event was arranged to reflect upon the company’s hugely productive history, celebrating its journey from its humble start-up to its current position as an internationally renowned developer of technological innovations for the electricity industry. The important corporate gathering included a tour of EA Technology’s facilities and an informed presentation which brought to light many solutions and concepts introduced to the market (either recently or confirmed for release shortly). These essential industry updates included the organisation’s ‘LuCIUS’ concept, which intends to create ‘state aware’ electricity networks around the globe, its vision of ‘self-healing’ LV networks (designed to eliminate unplanned supply interruptions with its intelligent technologies) and its smart AM Visual development of a leading CBRM approach, which revolutionises network asset management by quantifying, optimising and visualising asset management interventions. Group CEO Robert Davis was keen to tell us more about the day’s proceedings, “The event enabled us to promote and celebrate our evolving range of safety and reliability focused services and products, whether lightning location, UltraTEV products, or substation surveys (all of which are designed to help our customers reduce service interruptions and achieve a reliable and safe HV electricity network). “We also discussed our competency based multi-media training packages developed and delivered by our Power Skills Centre, and effectively shared our vision for ‘Pre-emptive’ asset management of HV networks, which is based upon a strategic approach to condition monitoring and intelligent interventions focused on delivering corporate objectives.” “Our 50th anniversary provided us with the opportunity to show off what we do best, and where we are heading across all of our business,” added Director Dave A Roberts. “As ever, the changes we make are to restructure, refocus and refine – we believe that our future is bright and likely to be characterised by continued innovation (whether in geographic development or in the solutions we develop and deliver).

“Without question, the energy sector is one of the most exciting areas for innovators in the world right now. The challenge of reducing energy costs, increasing reliability of supply and reducing carbon emissions, combine to create a fertile landscape for the amazingly creative and motivated people of EA Technology. Our vision, based on our rich heritage, is ambitious and will continue to embrace the challenges ahead.” The company, which was previously known as the Electricity Council Research Centre (ECRC) during its establishment in 1966, is today regarded a successful independent employeeowned organisation dedicated to activities surrounding electricity distribution networks. Striving purposefully to assist industrial and commercial customers, EA Technology optimises the performance, reliability, safety and cost-efficiency of power assets for businesses across the world with its comprehensive suite of services, products, software and consultancy services.
as a network equivalent of a smartphone (operating openly to allow a range of apps to function) as a means of preventing significant infrastructure costs whilst linking the electricity customers and citizens with the energy system. One of EA Technology’s most recent additions is its revolutionary UltraTEV Plus², which comes with a whole host of benefits. As well as being user-friendly, the latest variation to the awardwinning UltraTEVT range integrates additional sensing capabilities and real-time advances analytical features determining distinctions between true PD, noise and other interferences
for clarification. The portable system simplifies the asset inspection process as its survey mode captures and transfers results direct to computers or company networks via Wi-Fi synchronisation or USB/SD card usage for the purposes of trend identification and maintenance cycle/asset life optimisation. EA Technology strongly encourages industry compliance whilst simultaneously bettering functionality and safety in relation to power asset setup and control. With its 40-strong distribution network – operational with satellite offices situated in the USA, Australia, China, Europe, Singapore and the
Assisting operators with the process of making more cost-effective and reliable investment decisions in regards to utility scale and private networks, the team combines innovation and flexibility with technical excellence, as Dave explained, “The secret to our success is our adaptability; spotting changes in the market and then focusing on what we can do to better position ourselves whilst providing value to our customers. We also take integrity seriously as we are passionate about doing the ‘right’ thing and are strong believers in a work-hard ethic.” The company has been through many exciting developments as of late. As well as expanding significantly ever since its move from a government R&D provider to a commercial entity, EA Technology has ensured to adjust to industry changes with the revamp of its globally leading Condition Based Risk Management approach. Another area of interest involves the group’s pivotal position in making the connection between the needs of local electricity networks and electric vehicles as nations make the shift towards transport electrification and its subsequent arrangement of the innovative My Electric Avenue scheme, which is soon to be followed up with Electric Nation, a project set to be the world’s largest of its kind (EV/network related). Now moving towards the decarbonisation of heat and transport, it seems inevitable that lower voltage networks will become a fundamental factor going forward. He added, “In what has been another difficult year for manufacturing in the UK, we are delighted to have a record order book for the past 12 months. We have worked with some of the best in the business and established some great connections which we will build on moving forward.
“We have exceeded our expectations for the past year, moved forward with some great projects and received excellent feedback on all the contracts we have been involved in. “We will now use this experience in order to move on to bigger and better things as we cannot afford to rest on our laurels as we aim to repeat or even better these results in 2017 in an increasingly competitive marketplace.” Over the past year KP Industries have worked with global manufacturing giants Eaton Hydraulics, Benteler Automotives and C&F Automotives, providing them with bespoke conveying systems for their products and helping them overcome unique challenges. Closer to home, the business has been involved in promoting and organising the Rochdale Skills Event which saw more than 2,000 school children from the local area taking part in a number of skill-based manufacturing activities. Commitment to Excellence
More from Wood Here at Best Practice, we are delighted to commend EGGER for achieving our highly coveted Commitment to Excellence profile. We are therefore keen to tell our readership more about the capabilities of this outstanding company whilst promoting its leading line of proven products. The family run company was founded in 1961 and has enjoyed steady growth ever since. The EGGER Group, which is headquartered in Austria, is now a globally recognised name best known for its reputation as a manufacturer of structural flooring products and decorative interior products, supplying laminates, contemporary materials for furniture and ecologically conscious wood construction components. The full range – which incorporates building products, decorative interior products and flooring – includes everything from laminate, edging, compact laminate, timber, MFC and MDF to lightweight boards, fire door cores, rawboards, worktops, laminate flooring and flooring with cork+ technology. The exclusive EGGER line of building materials comprises of EGGER P5, EGGER Peel Clean Xtra and EGGER Protect. When used in conjunction with EGGER Joint & Joist D4 Adhesive and fitted correctly using the EGGER Advanced Structural Flooring System method, qualifies the installer for the unique Structural Lifetime Guarantee.
“This can allow businesses to make the most out of their current premises with the potential of doubling the area for a one-off cost as opposed to either moving entirely or increasing rental costs. EGGER OSB HDX is ideal for this application as it provides the strength and stiffness required for a mezzanine floor, plus a whole host of additional benefits to the installer – it truly is an innovation in mezzanine flooring.” EGGER OSB HDX is essentially a lighter and stronger alternative to the standard 38mm chipboard, which means it is particularly advantageous for the user, who can employ 11% more coverage per panel whilst experiencing a more efficient fitting process. As well as withstanding higher loads, the product has a stronger and firmer structure with low swelling properties which ensures that the board can be effortlessly applied in humid environments. With 17 plants across Europe, EGGER have impressively established themselves as a prominent presence in their markets throughout the world. The company philosophy has
remained an important constant throughout its development, as the group keenly reinforce their environmental approach to work, operating by means of sustainable forestry, recycling and renewable energy processes. For more information on either the company or any of the products mentioned, please do not hesitate to get in touch with the team today – an informed business representative will be more than happy to answer any questions you may have. One of the company’s most recent additions is its new 30mm OSB HDX, a 2,400 x 675 structural flooring board featuring a tongue and groove on the two long edges. Aimed at the industrial, commercial and warehouse flooring markets, this unique product is suitable for mezzanine flooring, racking, shelving, working platforms and decking, as it is made using a special panel formula with heavy duty, load bearing capabilities. “As businesses grow they will often look to relocate premises in order to expand their operations,” Daniel Soulsby, EGGER Marketing Category Manager (Building), told us. “This can be very costly and time consuming, never mind the upheaval involved in moving a business to a new location. Often a more economical and efficient answer can be to consider installing a mezzanine floor in the existing premises.

Warehouse, Logistics, Handling & Storage News Howard Tenens The Used Forklift Specialists Herchenbach delivers further extends semi-permanent building Warehouse Footprint into the North West solution for Waste water
management system
Howard Tenens has just purchased a new site in Heywood, Manchester. The site includes 175,000 square feet of warehouse space and significant yard and outside area. This increases Howard Tenens’ total warehouse footprint to over 3,500,000 square feet in the UK. The unit has been bought by the Group as a result of the growing demand for logistics warehouse space from their customer base. Jamie Hartles, Logistics Director at Howard Tenens, comments, “Manchester represents an important purchase from a strategic standpoint. As a national logistics business Manchester further supports our continued growth. The added advantage of owning the sites means we can provide our customers with enhanced service options.” “This is part of a significant investment package to create capacity in the business, enabling us to grow,” Hartles continues. “This includes a warehouse build at our Sharpness site of 169,000 square feet, new market leading warehouse and transport management software and investment in people development.” The site sits within the Stakehill Industrial Estate which is widely acknowledged to be one of the finest industrial estates in the North West of England. The site benefits from direct links to the A627(M) and M62 ( junction 20) and is in close proximity to Rochdale, Oldham and Manchester city centre. As part of the purchase the Manchester site will undergo significant refurbishment to ensure that the finished facility is of the usual Howard Tenens standard.
One of the UK’s largest waste water service providers had a specific, technically challenging request and turned to Herchenbach for its tailored expert solutions. The company needed housing for a slow sand filtration pilot plant where stable conditions and minimal outside influence were key to the success of the pilot. The site was used to collate data for analysis and the semi-permanent building needed to house testing equipment and support a metal mezzanine structure. Challenging terrain, demanding construction conditions and specific requirements for a seamless fit around the pilot plant meant that no regular off-the-shelf structure would be suitable. Herchenbach’s expert team visited the site to ensure it completely understood the specifics that characterised this uncommon request. Analysing the particular
requirements for the pilot plant area and mezzanine, the technical team carefully worked out a tailored solution for the building and the construction procedure. Stuart Rathbone, Managing Director of Herchenbach UK, says, “The limited size of the designated working area and both the position and size of the previously built pilot plant made this a difficult job for our team.” The temporary warehouse needed to be installed around preinstalled equipment, which meant that Herchenbach had to rethink its traditional construction methods and lift-in the preassembled frames with a crane. While adhering to strict Health and Safety policies, a new procedure and a custom technical construction plan including new RAMS was developed.

Spectrum Healthcare source Redbacks Pocket Knee Pads and develop equipment to help reduce health issues Anyone who spends any amount of time kneeling in their work will know the stress it can put on the knee – often developing pain, stiffness and swelling in the joint due to the compression forces. What you may not be aware of is the serious wear and tear being caused to the soft tissue which protects the knee.
Spectrum Healthcare (UK) Ltd are one company who understand the problems faced by workers who undertake tasks at low levels or in a static position for prolonged amounts of time – often adopting awkward postures which can cause back and joint problems and ultimately lead to absence from work. Over the last few years, Spectrum Healthcare have been working with healthcare professionals and organisations to source and develop equipment to help reduce cumulative strain and promote musculoskeletal health. This includes their own innovation the Ergokneeler, a low level stool and kneeling system integrated into a single piece of equipment. Designed to provide comfort, support and ease of movement and to assist the user in managing the postural stressing associated with kneeling and squatting. A popular low height seating solution among their range is the OneLeg Stool, with its unique curved base, which allows the user to rock and turn around, whilst offering stability, giving the user a wide
radius to work within and eliminating the need for overreaching and stretching. New to Spectrum are RedBacks Knee Pads. Unlike standard foam or gel knee pads, Redbacks® unique, patented ‘Leaf-Spring’ Cushioning Technology, provides support to the user’s knees by suspension rather than compression. The combination of the flexible leaf spring and geometric matrix, works to absorb and distribute the users body weight evenly, alleviating pressure on the knees and help to radically reduce discomfort in the back, legs, and ankle joints.
The knee has very little protection of its own with only a very thin layer of skin and muscle over the kneecap. Even during normal every day activities, over a lifetime the knees wear down. So when you spend any length of time kneeling in your day to day work this deterioration process is accelerated. This rapid decline of the soft tissue in the knee significantly increases the risk of injuries such as meniscal cartilage lesions and tears and can lead to long-term degenerative conditions such as osteoarthritis. To reduce the risk of damage and to help slow down the wearing down process, it is imperative to ensure that the knee is fully protected. The best way to do this is to wear some form of knee pad.
There are two main types of knee pads available for workers, strapped or slide in pocketed knee pads. The most popular pocketed pads are generally made from foam or gel, which compress when pressure is applied and generally lose shape and mass over time – decreasing the amount of protection offered so will need to be replaced frequently. Many strapped pads have a hard plastic outer cover which can be very bulky and limit knee movement. There is a cost-effective solution……… Redbacks® Knee Pads.

The combination of a flexible leaf spring and geometric matrix, work to absorb and distribute the users body weight evenly, alleviating pressure on the knees and help to reduce discomfort in the back, legs, and ankle joints. At-Line Near-Infrared Analyzer NDC Technologies, a leading global provider of precision measurement and control solutions, offers the InfraLab e-Series at-line analyzer for the accurate and reliable measurement of Degree of Bake (DOB) or Brownness in biscuits, crackers, cookies and snack foods. Taste, texture and appearance are all key quality attributes that determine the success of a food product in the market. Testing of the product during the manufacturing process for moisture and colour is important to ensure final product consistency and ‘freshness,’ but testing typically requires the use of multiple analytical technologies which are often located in a laboratory remote from the production line. NDC Technologies has integrated

it’s proven DOB or Brownness measurements into the InfraLab AtLine Analyzer to provide simultaneous measurements of Moisture, Oil and DOB in five seconds. With no special skill required to operate, the InfraLab delivers process vision far beyond that of conventional testing. This provides unprecedented feedback to the process controller, for improved control of Moisture, Oil and DOB which offers financial benefits such as: ■■ Reduced start-up times and scrap ■■ Production of more consistent, within specification product (minimise ‘checking’) ■■ Improved operating efficiency ■■ Acrylamide mitigation. Food & Beverage Traceability Weber Packaging Solutions looks at how automation in food and beverage production can help to deliver increased quality assurance and traceability. What is Traceability? ‘Traceability’ is the ability to trace and follow a food, feed, food-producing animal or substance intended to be incorporated into a food or feed, through all stages of production, processing and distribution. This means that every Food Business Operator (FBO) must be able to identify from whom and to whom a product has been supplied and have systems and procedures in place that allow for this information to be made available to the FSAI. Standardisation Providing a sell by or use by date on your product is no longer sufficient. Consumers, manufacturers and distributors require more information on where and when the product was produced and/or processed, where it originated, what it contains and how to use it. Today there is legislation that requires information on allergens, nutritional value, producer details and country of origin, for example.
To help meet the requirements of all stakeholders within the supply chain there has been a move towards standardisation in the way information on food and drink packaging is presented, supplemented by legislation to ensure absolute traceability through the supply chain.
inspection, labelling or data capture, so the printed alphanumeric codes need to be reliably machine readable, to enable automated inspection systems to check that the mark is present and correct.
EU Regulations The European Food Information to Consumers Regulation No 1169/2011 (FIC) brings together EU rules on general food labelling and nutrition labelling into a single piece of legislation. New rules on country of origin information for meat from sheep, pigs, goats and poultry have applied from April 2015. Topics covered by these regulations include dates of freezing of meat, compositional standards for minced meat, water content, caffeine content and font sizes for labelling.
them uniquely positioned to facilitate the search for an appropriate response to the traceability challenge at local and international levels.

Production Process Integrating process controllers, barcode reading, product labellers and vision equipment directly into the real-time network can help to automate inspection tasks which, currently, are carried out by human operators. Modern production processes cannot rely on manual product
Weber’s Alpha Compact Easing Confusion on takes the pressure out of Food Labelling Labelling The Food Standards Agency and DEFRA recently published new guidance on the use of ‘Use By’ and ‘Best Before’ dates, to avoid confusion on which date is appropriate for any specific food product. Under these new voluntary guidelines, packaging should contain either a ‘Use By’ or a ‘Best Before’ date label to assist shoppers in deciding when food is at its best and how long it can be kept and still be safe to eat.
Weber’s Alpha Compact label applicator is a cost-effective solution to fast, reliable pressure-sensitive labelling. This system features a small footprint, yet employs a highly-accurate wipe-on method of application to affix pressure sensitive labels in a production environment. The Alpha Compact label dispenser not only boasts a new design with increased performance and higher application rates (up to 600 labels per minute) but is even simpler to operate than its field proven proven predecessors. The Alpha Compact system quickly and accurately applies pre-printed labels onto products and packaging in conjunction with various applicator units. The new integrated controller further reduces the space required for this already compact unit. The Alpha Compact unit automatically
unwinds the supply roll and peels the labels from their liner, then wipes them on to products, cartons and other packages as they travel past the system on a conveyor line. This system applies labels up to 120mm (4.7”) wide and 300mm (11.8”) long at speeds up to 50.0 Metres per Minute (164 feet per minute) to a tolerance of ±0.75mm (0.03”). Research has shown that the ‘best before’ date currently used on prepacked foods leads to food being unduly wasted, as consumers are often confused by its true meaning, even although the food is still safe to eat beyond this date. The clear benefit of the ‘Use By’ date is that consumers will definitely know that the product is no longer safe and therefore does need to be thrown away. These new guidelines are aimed not just at easing confusion, but reducing unnecessary food waste.

We all know one beer is pretty easy to handle but what about 20 or 30 or even a 100 a minute? Weber can label virtually any product, while meeting with all regulatory guidelines, regardless of shape and size.
As your production line gets busier and the volumes increase, we recommend a machine that uses pressure-sensitive label application that is applied automatically. Pre-printed labels pulled away from liners reduce the need for human input, applying the label accurately, reducing human error, time and cost. The Geset 100 Series is a simple and flexible piece of equipment as it is both technically optimal and economically justifiable. The Geset 100 Series may be integrated into existing production processes or operate as a manually charged stand-alone solution. The Geset 300 Series offers even more flexibility for higher volume (250 beers per minute). The basic concept of this system is based on two-sided labelling of

Easing the Transition to the Latest Food Labelling Regulations
For food manufacturing and packing companies, adopting new guidelines and standards for marking, coding and labelling needs to be achieved in a timely manner with the minimum of disruption to the production process. With over 75 years experience within the industry, Weber Marking Systems has helped thousands of customers adopt the countless changes to labelling and marking legislation during this time.
From the Craft to the Cure! Beer Manufacturing to Pharmaceutical Manufacturing
For low volume labelling, we recommend the Bottle-Matic (applies labels to 20 to 30 bottles per minute). The Bottle-Matic is very economic and can label bottles front and back or with one single wrap around as a table top printer that works in cooperation with a production assistant placing each individual bottle onto the label applicator.
Total cost of ownership Food and beverage producers are under constant pressure to reduce costs however this reduction in cost cannot be at the expense of product quality. Automation of production, labelling, data capture and traceability systems are proven to reduce errors, reduce product recalls, reduce wastage and increase productivity. This when compared to the existing, perhaps manual processes and procedures should be factored in when evaluating the Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) of any system under consideration.
The new law introduced at the end of 2014 relates to labelling on foodstuffs and how ingredients and allergens are displayed. Adhering to the new directives may be a potential minefield for some companies. With a history in Labels and Labelling dating back to the 1930’s with experience helping manufacturers implement changes to labelling regulations, Weber Packaging Solutions has the expertise and technology to ensure a smooth transition for UK food manufacturers, as Weber UK’s Patrick Hughes outlines the implications. The new law, EU regulation 1169/2011, encompasses 2 separate directives relating to labelling, presentation and advertising of foodstuffs plus nutrition labelling for foodstuffs, into one piece of legislation.
moulded bottles without the use of runaround text blocks, meaning set up costs are low and product specific adjustments are easy to do. If you product is in high demand and volume, then the Geset 700 series is for you, as it is synonymous with individual customized labelling solutions and is highly effective across all industries. To aid a greener environment, we offer a Multi-cycle label which allows the bottle to be returned, recycled, rewashed and ready to go many times before the label needs replacing. Weber also caters for many different styles of custom labels, such as the no-look label, this label shows off the contents of your bottle. Whatever the label, Weber has you covered. Food producers and sales outlets must now ensure that allergens (cereals containing gluten, crustaceans, eggs, fish, peanuts, soya bean, milk, nuts, celery, mustard, sesame, sulphur dioxide, lupin and molluscs) must be highlighted within the ingredients list and not separately. The objective is to make any allergens included within foodstuffs more prominent; reducing the number of instances of allergic reactions suffered by consumers. The logistics of managing and implementing the changes demanded by the new legislation will require considerable effort on the part of manufacturers. The first step for many will be to review the current methods and technologies used for printing and labelling. This will extend to the label media, printing systems, application systems and software. T +44 (0)1875 611111 sales@weber.co.uk www.weber.co.uk

Waste & Recycling Solutions News
‘The AutoLoadBaler works fantastically well in our business: It’s a great concept!’ Harvey & Brockless Leading luxury food supplier Harvey & Brockless were looking to improve operational efficiency, reduce waste disposal costs and turn their waste into money. ‘Our staff were spending at least two and half hours a day taking waste cardboard in bins to the compactor outside. We needed to find a better solution to our waste system’ says Warren Kruger, their Business Improvement Manager.
concluded that if Strautmann’s unique AutoLoadBaler was located within the factory, they could bale cardboard quickly and efficiently, reduce labour costs, generate income and divert resourceful material away from landfill. The unique fully automated design allows operators to prioritise their work day in a more productive manner, allowing them to concentrate on their core business.
After meeting Compact & Bale at an exhibition Warren wanted to re-evaluate their waste management process so that the staff could spend more time on their core business and less time on waste handling.
The machine has been such a success that Harvey & Brockless are looking to replace their other standard vertical baler with a second AutoLoadBaler. Warren says, “The staff now have time to do other cleaning jobs rather than spending all their time walking to and from a compactor to fill it. The AutoLoadBaler works fantastically well in our business: it’s a great concept.”
Prior to installation of the AutoLoadBaler, staff at the food manufacturer were filling a 35 yard portable compactor full of cardboard and general waste, going to landfill every week. Their operatives were making 15 ten minute journeys a day taking bins outside to the compactor.

to be a successful product.” Design resources include the latest Solidworks 3D modelling software for system design and advanced Altium PCB layout and design software capable of handling the latest high speed PCIe signals with impedance matched tracks. All design work comes under BVM's ISO-9001 Quality Management System. Key considerations for any project are power and thermal management, manufacturability and testability, production life expectancy and obsolescence planning. Once a design specification has been developed and agreed, a ‘proof of concept’ to verify the software, overall functionality and cost is produced. Once accepted, the project then moves into prototype production before volume manufacturing. T +44 (0)1489 780144 info@bvmltd.co.uk www.bvm.co.uk
Your Ideas Realised
• Custom design • Proof of concept • Prototypes • Production When customers approach us with their design and manufacturing requests, the question is more or less the same: “Can you manufacture this system for us?” The answer is a qualified, ‘Yes.’ Whether still at the initial idea or partly designed stage. Qualified because we’re typically being asked to manufacture a product that’s still really at ‘proof of concept’ and still has some way to go in enjoying the practicalities of good manufacturability, reliability and good life time availability of components. Plain bearings – plain by name but not by nature
The problem often starts when a designer relies on the same bearing even though the application has evolved – the loads get bigger, the speeds get faster or another variable is introduced such as a change in chemical or the withdrawal of adequate lubrication or maintenance access. A bearing is a small part with a big responsibility and like all components, it has a limit; so the key is to respecify, rather than push the boundaries of the bearing you are used to using. Specifying the right plain bearing The guiding principal for an engineer is that the bearing is the wear element and therefore the shaft must be made of a harder material than the bearing. Knowing the shaft material and its performance properties before commencing bearing selection is crucial and combined with that all important consideration of cost, your manufacturer or distributor of choice will be able to assist you in making the right choice for each project. One of the main parameters used in correct bearing specification is the Pressure Velocity Ratio (PVR), the relationship between load and speed, which can give an indication of the wear that is likely. Like all lifetime calculations though, it doesn’t offer a complete picture, so further investigation into the load and speed is essential. The type of load, whether intermittent or continuous, and whether there is a shock load to consider are all important factors,
“In that time, we have also grown steadily and the number of our staff has increased. The business is definitely going in the right direction. We are one of only a few winch manufacturers in the UK and my aspiration is for the company to continue to grow and develop a global presence.” Contact T +44 (0)1723 584080 sales@nswinches.co.uk www.nswinches.co.uk
New Technology cleans up Water Problems in Spray Booth Air Supply
Paul Mitchell, managing director for Bowman International, explores the importance of correct bearing specification when it comes to optimising performance and reducing both planned and emergency maintenance. With many more material and design options to choose from that one might expect, it could be said that plain bearings are plain by name but not by nature. For design engineers who work in a closed field specifying component parts for a specific environment, specifying plain bearings can become a tick-box exercise. However the same can’t be said for aggressive or unusual applications, where it is far more important to select your bearings on a project-byproject basis.
in new plant and equipment, such as the very latest CNC machinery, so we can meet demands for more powerful, more sophisticated systems and even shorter lead-times.
In spray paint environments water, oil and particulates in the compressed air supply can be an expensive and time-consuming problem. But now Dropout® provides a new, patented, technologically advanced, low cost, maintenance-free solution with guaranteed results.
as well as the coefficient of friction and the lubrication within the system. Bearing manufacturers have invested heavily in research and development in recent years and we are really starting to see the benefit as an industry. New alloys have been introduced, along with new techniques for manufacturing, testing and fault analysis. Two market leading solutions For many demanding applications, choosing a self-lubricating bearing or one which has been created from a load-resistance alloy could provide optimised performance where many bearings would fail. Let us look at these two potential solutions in more detail: Self-lubricating bearings Self-lubricating bearings, like Bowman’s Oilite® range, are also referred to as graphite plug bearings, because they are lubricated for life with solid graphite plugs. With lubricating graphite mechanically forced into holes throughout the entire bearing, a film of lubrication is transferred onto the shaft when operation begins, offering continuous lubrication over long periods without maintenance. With the capability to withstand high temperatures up to 425°C (800°F) and cryogenic temperatures down to -200°C (-400°F), they are ideally suited for applications where no external lubrication can be provided, for high temperature applications where oil or grease would carbonise, and for bearings which will be immersed in water. This includes high temperature applications
Unlike traditional filters the super-efficient oil, water and particulate remover has no cartridge to clog, requires no costly servicing or the ongoing expense of consumable filter replacements.
such as ovens, kilns, dryers and injection moulding machines. Wet application would include submersed pumps, textile finishing, chemical processing, water turbines and lock gates – all of which are hostile environments and difficult to access for servicing, which clearly makes a maintenance-free solution hugely appealing. Higher load capacity bearings Manufacturers worldwide are investing in the creation of higher load capacity bearings. When it comes to product development of this nature the BowMet® range from Bowman has been hailed as the biggest advancement in plain bearings in 70 years, offering a higher load capacity and longer life than comparable bearings, together with outstanding heat, speed and corrosion capabilities. Its static load of 820N/mm2 is incomparable for plain rolled bearings. All of this means with BowMet®, for the first time, rolled bearings can deliver the load capacity required for the heaviest of applications and harshest of conditions, from agricultural machinery, construction plant and large marine vessels, to motorsport vehicles, cranes and many more. Manufactured from the ToughMet® alloy, developed by Materion, it can deliver increased reliability, reduced downtime, fewer warranty claims and lower maintenance costs for a host of applications across many sectors. All with the increased flexibility, reduced wastage and no minimum order quantities that comes with standard rolled bearings. T +44 (1)235 462500 info@bowman.co.uk www.bowman.co.uk

The problem of moisture and particulates in the air supply is well known and manifests itself as fisheyes in the paint finish. When present the usual remedy for fisheyes, also known as saucers, pits of craters, is to start again by rubbing down
and refinishing the area. However, Dropout now guarantees to remove 99.9999% of liquid and 99% of particulates down to one micron. The payback of the simple to fit unit, is said to be less than the price of just one body shop rework. Dropout reacts instantly to air flow, which makes it perfect for the stop-start action of hand spraying, by delivering clean dry air at a constant flow and pressure. Unlike cyclonic filters, another common alternative, which rely on a constant and stable air flow to perform properly. T +44 (0)333 405 1060 sales@drop-out.co.uk www.drop-out.co.uk
Reduce staff injuries with process driven conveyor solutions Conveyors make all the difference when moving heavy or difficult loads. Gravity conveyors include those with rollers, wheels or chutes where objects move by gravity or momentum, typically mounted on a slightly declined angle, using gravity to assist product movement. Staff no longer need to handle parts manually eliminating the risk of injury as product either slide into position (If horizontal) or gravity is left to do the work. The journey is mapped out, so that parts never go astray and assembly is always done in the right order. This eliminates the risk of items being picked up and replaced in the wrong destination. Workstations connected by conveyors make the process very easy to understand and designates a clear order for staff to follow. Mistakes will be identified quickly, saving valuable production time and increasing productivity.

Union Industries eliminates contamination with bespoke static curtain Union Industries has helped a Scottish manufacturer keep its state-of-the-art facility free from contamination with a bespoke static curtain, which was designed and produced at its Leeds headquarters. The Static Dividing Curtain, which is suspended by using Union’s own unique proven suspension system, is approximately 40m long with a drop of 7.3m. It’s been designed specifically to help segregate Don and Low Ltd’s manufacturing area from its warehouse, eliminating heat and dust ingress, thus allowing its specialist non-woven products to be created in an optimal environment.
In addition to the heat retention and contamination protection already mentioned, the curtain has helped to contain the noise of the machinery in the area, maintaining enjoyable working conditions in the adjacent warehouse area where polyolefin technical textiles are stored. Union’s bespoke Industrial Curtain system features a translucent upper section of fabric which helps to improve the light transfer efficiency in the manufacturing area – an important feature for Don and Low Ltd. The Dividing Curtain also has two PVC Strip Curtain access points for forklift trucks and pedestrian traffic.
Established in 1792, Don and Low Ltd, which has been part of Thrace Group since 1999, has experienced a great deal of international success due to its reputation for quality, technology and customer service. T +44 (0)113 244 8393 www.unionindustries.co.uk

Phoenix Mecano Bopla & ROSE products at Southern Manufacturing Phoenix Mecano recently exhibited at Southern Manufacturing in Farnborough showing a range of products from our brands Bopla & ROSE. High winds on Monday 8th February forced the organisers to delay stand build-up until 10:00pm. A late night was had by all yet we still appeared chirpy & happy, always managing a smile on Tuesday morning as the show opened to visitors. On the stand are Barry Ming, Technical Sales Engineer, Vic Shah, Business Development Manager & Norbert Tinz representing Bopla Germany. We met lots of our existing customers plus many potential customers looking for quality enclosures, sound advice & good customer service. The show was very successful & we have decided to exhibit again at Southern Manufacturing which will be March 21st – 23rd 2017. We will also be exhibiting at Northern Manufacturing in Manchester, September 28th & 29th 2016. Phoenix Mecano Ltd is part of Phoenix Mecano AG group (Switzerland) which is a globally orientated technology Company with lean structure and the brand leader in the enclosures market. The company’s brands of Bopla & ROSE mainly focus within the manufacturing of niche products. This can be roughly divided within three divisions: Enclosure technology, Mechanical Components and ELCOM/EMS.
An individual enclosure requires decisions to be taken. For a long time, the market has experienced various processing, improvement and completion opportunities for enclosures. The demand for standard enclosures without any individualisation is decreasing, and specific variants are now popular. At Southern Manufacturing Phoenix Mecano Ltd exhibited their two enclosure brands Bopla and ROSE exhibiting a range of product & the processing scenarios which are available. Phoenix Mecano’s philosophy is that content matters. But why? Because…
■■ content matters ■■ your products (content) are important to us ■■ customer satisfaction takes priority ■■ know-how is a precondition ■■ Bopla & ROSE only make promises that can be kept ■■ it's all about capability and Bopla & ROSE only act in sustainable ways. When designing and developing a product, every engineer asks about the possibilities of packing a product in a way that is suitable for its later uses, and of ensuring that it has a special, individual touch. The best way to achieve this is to make use of a comprehensive consultation service during the development phase, because this minimises the amount of time needed for selection of the mechanical components. For this purpose, both brands offer its standard and special enclosures, with a wide range of services. This is where enclosures can be extensively processed, improved and
Developed and perfected over the last 20 years, today Renner compressors represent the most modern and cost-effective method of generating compressed air. With the launch of these compressors in the West Midlands the region's manufacturing, automotive and processing industries can now benefit from the extreme reliability and competitive pricing that all Renner machines are renowned for. The Renner range features outputs from 2.2 to 335kW with oil-free and water cooled options. Oil-free Scroll compressors have outputs from 1.5 to 30kW, each model having compact dimensions, solid reliability, exceptionally low operating noise levels and maintenancefriendly designs. Variable speed options vary motor speeds to cope with demand – if the air
requirement increases the motor speeds up and the delivery rate grows, but if the air requirement falls both motor speed and air delivery decreases, eliminating wasteful and costly ‘Offload’ running.

Sometimes not using a baseplate of any sort can seem like the easiest option to go with…. Why not just use the concrete floor? To be honest, a baseplate is almost always the best option for mounting your pump. It provides you with a sturdy, reliable and level platform on which to mount your pump giving you a solid foundation and minimises vibration and shifting keeping everything lined up perfectly whilst the pump is in use. A strong foundation will help you maintain uninterrupted and reliable service and should significantly reduce the need for repeated re-alignment.
LL Fluid Power can not only supply any model in the range on very short lead times, they can also supply spares (many direct from stock), provide a fully inclusive 5 year warranty available with fixed price servicing covering the duration of the warranty, plus the expertise of a fully trained Service Engineer. Speaking of this exciting new venture Ross Gowler, Thorite’s Marketing and Engineering Services Director said, “I am delighted to announce that Thorite is now the Premier Distribution Partner for Renner in the West Midlands. The decision to offer a new range of compressors from LL Fluid Power comes after exhaustive research into the best available machinery from manufacturers throughout Europe and further afield. Renner has proved to be the ideal choice – like Thorite it is a family company which specialises in providing high quality products coupled with very competitive pricing. For a limited period however, Thorite is offering some exclusive offers as part of their

Zanite® which combines epoxy resins with quartz aggregate so they are much stronger and more resistant to corrosion. The advantages of using a polymer concrete baseplate are: ■■ Provides a flatter mounting surface to 0.002”/foot significantly improved vibration Reduction Easier to install, saving time and money ■■ Improved resistance to corrosion and diaphragming ■■ Last longer ■■ ASME/ANSI-1991 compliant.
