In this season I’m reminded of how thankful I am for my family, my wife Jean, and our four sons. And I am grateful for you, our readers of Newtown Square Friends & Neighbors in print and online at www.NewtownSquareMag.com. My gratitude for your support of our hometown magazine grows every year with the increased support of more Sponsors of our community who make it possible for this magazine to be Bringing People Together by our features about people in our community. This year, in this month we look to be thankful for all our blessings, I am particularly thankful for several things, but certainly for my family and friends all remaining healthy during this year of world pandemic, which has made this year so different. One friend I am thankful for having continued good health is Mr. Vickers, who will be 105 years old on Veterans Day, Wednesday November 11th. He is likely Delaware County’s oldest World War II veteran. In this issue, you’ll read an update about Mr. Vickers on page 24. You’ll learn how you can send him a birthday card for his 105th birthday and how to join the drive-by parade to honor him: 1:30pm Weds the 11th! Another friend for whom I am also particularly grateful is the person responsible for the eye candy that is this free magazine, which comes into your home each month. While it could not happen without our advertising Sponsors, what you’re holding must be created, and that creation comes through the talents of our magazine’s Graphic Designer Kim Cesati. She puts it all together each month with artful design that makes Newtown Square shine. Kim, on behalf of all our readers and advertising Sponsors, thank you for all your dedication to your craft. You inspire hometown pride. We are all grateful for your service to Newtown Square. As November passes and Thanksgiving follows up with Black Friday, please remember with gratitude our advertising Sponsors who finance our hometown magazine. When shopping this holiday season or preparing your home for holiday season guests, please purposefully choose to buy from a hometown Sponsor as your gift back for their support of our Newtown Square community. I know you’ll enjoy this November issue and hope you’ll look closely at all those beautiful Sponsor ads, which Kim has so carefully created for your consideration to Buy Local this holiday season. Happy Thanksgiving, Everyone!
Bob Blaisse Publisher Dear Residents, In times like these, we need to remember what is most important in life: family and friends. We hope you are enjoying the beautiful fall weather with your loved ones. This issue features the Kellys, who are dedicated to serving others in the community. They are a loving example to engaged and married couples. In addition to useful information and advice from our Expert Contributors, our Business Profile about Robert Kleinberg Landscape Construction & Design acquaints you with a Newtown Square resident Bob Kleinberg whose company can brighten up anyone’s home! And be sure to read about the exciting addition coming to the Newtown Square Presbyterian Church later this year. This month, you will also hear from past featured families, about what they are thankful for this year. Happy Thanksgiving to all of our Newtown Square residents! We hope your heart is as full as your plate. Stay safe and healthy!

Resident Feature
The Kellys: Family and Faith Over Everything by Christina Manning Photos courtesy of Marie & John Kelly
We would like to thank
for sponsoring this month’s Resident Feature.
Marie and John Kelly Photo by Sierra Clark Photography,
We are pleased to introduce you to The Kelly Family, devoted and wonderful Newtown Square residents since 1991. John D. Kelly IV was born and raised in Wilmington, Delaware, and attended Tower Hill High School where he was the Captain for the football, wrestling and track teams, breaking both school and county records in field events. He continued his education at Columbia College in New York City, graduating in 1979 with a BA in English. While attending college, he played football, track and boxing. After college, John attended the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine, where he graduated with Honors and served as the graduation speaker. In 1984, he won the Swain Award for Easing the Drudgery of Fellow Students. He went on to start his residency at the University of Pennsylvania from 1984–1989. In 1990, he went on to Temple University for a Sports Fellowship. Marie Kelly was born in Glenolden and attended Archbishop Prendergast High School in Drexel Hill, where she was a member of the Junior Achievement Club for two years. Being the President of a student-run company and having a very successful year, Marie attended the National JA Convention as a regional representative for the Upper Darby Chapter. She was also a member of the Chess Club, Science, French and Latin Clubs. Marie was one of four students chosen to participate in a pilot study and attend Widener University for college science credits throughout her senior year. She graduated with honors in 1976 and continued her education at Thomas Jefferson University, graduating in 1979 with a Nursing Degree. Marie and John met in 1984 while both were working at the University of Pennsylvania. Marie was working in the Surgical Intensive Care Unit and John was on his surgical rotation 6

as part of his internship. “It was our shared work ethic and faith that drew us together,” recalled Marie. The couple got married in October 1987, at Immaculate Heart of Mary Church in Roxborough. “Our wedding day was rainy and cold, so that limited outdoor pictures, but it was a beautiful wedding service and fun reception,” recalled Marie. The couple had an adventurous honeymoon, to say the least. They had planned to go to Yugoslavia to see Medjugorje and Dubrovnik. Unfortunately, their flight from Germany to Yugoslavia was cancelled without warning. They got a standby flight to Zagreb, but ended up getting stranded there with no hotel reservations. “Our luggage got lost, so no change of clothes for eight days!” said John. “We survived with only muddy, wet sneakers and dirty travel clothes,” added Marie. Luckily, the couple can look back and laugh at it now, 33 years later! They started their married life in the Andorra area of Roxborough. “There was a cute little health food store and deli restaurant that was our favorite date night spot,” said Marie. Because John was a resident and was on call every other night for three years, they enjoyed being home together. “We used to drive to work together at 6am, to maximize seeing each other,” said John. In 1992, the couple welcomed twin girls. Ann Marie, outgoing and determined, graduated from the University of Notre Dame in 2014. She was All-State Track, competing in the hurdle and relay events. She continued Pre-Med studies at Temple University and University of Penn. She then completed her Masters of Science in Global Health at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) in 2018. Ann Marie is currently in her third year of medical school at Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia. In her spare time,
she enjoys running, biking, surfing and yoga. She traveled to Kenya during her UCSF studies, to do research for her Global Health degree by studying the effects of physician burnout on the quality of care provided, as well as maternal-child outcomes in Migori County, Kenya. She hopes to pursue a career in medicine that involves work in global health.

Mary, quite the athlete (three school records in track), is artistic and cerebral. She spent one semester abroad studying Mary and Ann Marie Kelly (age 3½) in Sevilla, Spain, she became fluent in Spanish. After college, Mary joined Teach for America and started teaching at a middle school in Houston. While living in Texas, she met her now-fiancé Chris, and decided to move out to Colorado. She is currently the Manager of Enrollment and Community Engagement for a charter school network in the Denver metro area. Depending on the season, Mary and Chris spend their weekends either skiing, camping or taking their dog, Tucker, on long hikes. Their newest hobby includes hiking some of the 14,000-foot mountains in Colorado, for the majestic views and fitness challenge. The couple also enjoys traveling and learning culinary skills of Asian culture. Mary and Chris are planning to get married next fall. Continued on page 8

Resident Feature Dr. John Kelly is an Orthopedic Surgeon at the Hospital of University of Pennsylvania, specializing in Sports/Shoulder Surgery. A severe injury in college brought John to a fine surgeon who demonstrated the importance of compassionate and competent care. “I always liked sports and working with my hands,” said John. “Taking care of athletes was a natural good fit for me, and the many injuries I sustained enabled me to relate exceptionally well. I think the most enjoyable or rewarding part of my job would be easing the pain of others,” explained Dr. Kelly, “as well as preserving joints and people’s lifestyle.” With his hospital patients and also outside of the hospital, John loves making people laugh. “My father was a comedian,” he explained, “and I love making people laugh. Laughter is the best medicine!” John has appeared on Oprah Radio and Dr. Oz, and has also performed at the Keswick Theatre and at a comedy club in Wildwood. John is also a Eucharistic minister at St. Anastasia Church, where he and Marie also teach Pre-Cana classes. John is the President of the Philadelphia Chapter of the Lumen Institute. “I love people and I love to teach them,“ he explained. John plans to do more comedy, write and travel more with Marie. Marie has been a Board-certified RN since 1979, and worked at The Hospital of University of Pennsylvania until 1992, with RN work experience in Orthopedics, General Surgery, Surgical Intensive Care Unit, Clinical Research and NIH grants and Managing the Vascular Lab Department, until pregnancy with

the twins led to early retirement. As a homemaker, Marie provides hands-on and prayerful support daily to her husband and daughters. She also acts as a Home Health Care coordinator for family members and friends. “Prayerful daily offerings for them gives me a sense of support from afar, and trusting that God will protect and guide them on their journey,” said Marie. “This especially applies to our daughters.” Marie is also a facilitator for marriage prep couples for an organization called FOCCUS – Facilitating Open Couple Communication, Understanding and Study. Marie also assists with Pre-Cana prep for couples registered with the Living in Love Program, and since 2013, has been a Co-Leader & Facilitator of a local Women’s Catholic Bible Study – WWP (Walking with Purpose). Marie hopes to bring WWP to their local parish, and the return of in-person meetings, as COVID-19 allows.
“Working jointly with John allows us to share in the premarital journey of engaged couples, with candid, loving support, in hopes of helping them form a solid foundation in faith for their married life,” said Marie. Since 2000, John and Marie have conducted Medical Marriage talks together at medical conferences. “This allows Marie and I to speak candidly and informatively with other couples who juggle the rigors of intrusive medical demands on their marriages,” explained John. “It has been a blessing to us as well as those present in our audiences.” John and Marie have lived in Newtown Square since 1991, in the Saw Mill Park area, after wanting to be closer to both sides of the family. Even with their busy schedules, the couple makes time to enjoy Newtown Square’s natural beauty and peaceful environment. “We love walking, biking and exploring the nature trails together,” said John. “It’s also close to everything we need and love,” added Marie. John and Marie feel very connected to the community and their neighbors. “Our neighbors are the best,” said Marie, “and we consider them our extended family!” “Family is what is most important,” said Marie. “Sometimes when John had to travel to a conference, we would take the girls out of school, so we could all be together.” “It was a great way to offset the demands of my work and allow for some unique family time,” added John. The Kelly family lives by two mottos: “Fight for Justice, Love and Pray” and “Faith, Family and Forgiveness.” Together, they cover everything needed in this life.

Electric Vehicle Charging
Do You Have the Power? Electric vehicles are here to stay. There are now more varieties, styles and manufacturers than ever before, including small compact cars to walk-in vans to tractor trailer-size vehicles. The advances in lithium batteries and electric motors combined with the cost of gasoline have all contributed to the economic viability of manufacturing, purchasing, maintaining and driving these vehicles. Not to mention that they can be fun to drive with amenities such as large touch screens, advanced navigation and even autonomous driving. On a full charge and depending on road conditions, these vehicles can drive for hundreds of miles before needing to be recharged. Driving the speed limit, using accessories like heat or air conditioning, number of passengers, etc., can all affect the driving mileage between charging stops (filling ups). As an essential business, Martella Electric is OPEN & AVAILABLE!
Charging up can be accessed in many public locations, as mandated by the Federal government. Such places can be found along all major interstates, in gasoline stations, hotels and even in restaurant parking lots. One of the most popular locations for the average driver to charge the vehicle is at their home. There are several considerations that require investigation and inspection before charging can take place. The electrical service panel must have adequate space for additional power circuits to be installed. The size of the electrical service must be enough to accommodate the additional load of the vehicle being charged. The location of the electrical panel in relation to the desired location of the charging location is also an issue to consider. Charging equipment can be installed inside the garage or outside in weatherproof enclosures. There are a few methods used to charge electric vehicles. One is a charging unit purchased at the dealer* specific to the vehicle being charged. Another method is to install a power receptacle or outlet. Most vehicles come with cords of sufficient length and plugs to adapt to any of the charging methods. *Tesla Motors requires that a Tesla-certified installer and licensed electrician install the charging equipment and/or outlet. They also require an electrical inspection. To activate the manufacturer’s warranty, a report must be submitted along with proof of the work, permit and pictures of the installation. Martella Electric is a Teslacertified installer. N S

The November Sproul Lanes Student of the Month is Sacred Heart Academy Bryn Mawr senior Erin Corcoran! Erin received a Certificate of Achievement, and looks forward to enjoying her award: a “Pizza Bowl” party courtesy of Sproul Lanes, our Sponsor of this program. Erin, “a model of service, leadership, and friendship,” joined her school’s Community Service Corps (CSC) in her freshman year, to serve others, to lead and to motivate others to serve by example. After the pandemic ended their CSC’s outreach to help feed the homeless in Kensington, Erin decided to continue that service project on her own. As Co-Leader of her school’s Social Justice Book Club, Erin makes the most of the club’s meetings and activities, to help herself and all club members become educated about the world’s many problems, and be ready to help solve some of those problems in the future. This year, Erin is serving as Editor of her school’s monthly newspaper, The Beat, for which she has written all types of articles for 4 years. She is also a Senior Mathlete, and she helped co-found her school’s Reading Olympics team last year. Both of those activities are opportunities for Erin to serve on teams that compete against other schools. Erin loves volleyball and looks forward to her 4th year on SHA’s Varsity Volleyball Team. Last year, she served as the team’s Co-Captain, and this year, she’ll be Captain. Her skill earned her being named last year to the All-DELCO and All-Pennsylvania Volleyball Teams. She loves the great friendships and opportunities to mentor new players to be successful on and off the court. Erin appreciates that she was “raised to look out for others,” and is considering a career in Nursing as a way to combine her love of science with her love of helping and interacting with people. All your Friends & Neighbors in the Marple Newtown community congratulate you on this award, Erin, and we wish you well in your last year at Sacred Heart Academy Bryn Mawr and wherever life takes you after that!

TIPS
for Decorating with Mirrors
Mirrors are a great decorating tool because they reflect light, open up spaces and they just make rooms look better overall. There are many designs today that offer function and add style. Here are five tips on how to decorate with mirrors.
1. Consider the Reflection It’s important to look at what will be across from a mirror after you hang it. Instead of hanging a mirror based on your available wall space, take into consideration what will be reflected in it. Hanging it opposite an important piece of furniture or artwork will make that item stand out by bringing out that object’s pattern, shape and color. Also, hanging a mirror across from a window will increase the amount of light in the room.
2. Placement Matters In addition to placing a mirror across from something visually appealing, always make sure you hang it at the appropriate height. Mirror placement doesn’t have to be at eye level like a piece of art. If it’s too high, the room may feel disconnected. Lowering the mirror will make the space feel more intimate. Its placement will be based on what you want reflected, so higher or lower than eye level often works better.
3. Size Is Important Large mirrors work well even in small spaces. They create the illusion of depth and space; they can make a small room seem larger. A full-length mirror leaning against the wall is a great decorative element to use in a tiny room. Mirrors are also great for narrow spots such as hallways. Ask about OUR NEW Cleaning & Surface Protection!
4. Choose a Focal Point Mirrors make great focal points, especially above mantels and dining room buffets. A custom frame that matches the style of the mantle itself can make it more cohesive. Gallery walls covered entirely in mirrors can also create a focal point. Similar to a photo wall, treat the mirrors as one unit when deciding on placement. Because multiple frames can be visually busy, a gallery wall is best in an uncluttered larger space.
5. Style Depending on what type of frame you choose, mirrors can be modern or traditional. An antique mirror will have a totally different effect on a room than a simple wood frame will. You can also use custom-cut mirrors to create modern art on a blank wall. For example, have a glass company cut a series of uniform blocks for you to hang in a unique pattern. Try introducing other shapes to your mirror wall art such as a round mirror, which has a calming, eye-catching shape. They also provide balance if a room is full of other geometric elements. Now you can get creative in how you decorate with mirrors. Whether it’s antique, contemporary or a custom-cut mirror and frame, you can enhance the style of any room in your home. NS

Bringing People Together

From Pee-Wee to Pro: Bringing People Together Have You Visited Our BVMSports.com? It can’t be done. That’s what people said when our parent company, Best Version Media, launched its first few hometown magazines in the U.S. in 2007. It can’t be done. Print magazines are not popular. Digital is the future. Not now anyway, the Great Recession is underway. Well, after more than 13 years, and after launching hundreds more new magazines in the United States and Canada, some would say that Best Version Media is once again aiming at a target that can’t be hit, at a time that seems totally wrong for likely success. But here we go again, this time around with BVMSports.com. Ever heard of ESPN? That sports network birthed the market for sports on cable TV. Today, ESPN can boast its sports website as one of the most visited websites on the Internet. Now, here comes the future, only now possible by long local roots having been planted 13 years ago through local new print also known as “social media in print,” which is local hometown magazines like ours, with our mission to be Bringing People Together. Move over ESPN. There’s a new future star that has now launched. And that future is being launched right here in Newtown Square. And in Broomall. And in Media, West Chester and Radnor, and all over Delaware County, and in every county in Pennsylvania. And in every county and every hometown across the U.S. and beyond. BVMSports.com has launched with the boldest of missions: To cover sports from the ground up, through citizen journalism thriving in every hometown, whether professional, aspiring student writer or just a proud parent who wants to tell the world about their son or daughter’s achievements in their hometown. BVMSports.com is the new national voice of all things sports. And YOU can be a part of this Bringing People Together.

I am immensely proud of Best Version Media. With its hundreds of hometown magazines like your Newtown Square Friends & Neighbors, BVM will now break new barriers in Sports coverage and fandom with web-based democratization of sports information through BVMSports.com. Likely the world’s first major web destination for all things Sports and Sports Activities, BVM Sports is not only for fans of pro, college, or even high school sports, but also for proud parent fans of Little Leaguers, Pop Warner football players, karate kids, lacrosse and soccer players and kids who like to fish or who swim like a fish. And not only for kids and teens, but also to extol the sport activities of local adults, including senior citizens who continue to break barriers in sports in their retirement. Now, one website, one app, covers it all — Pee Wee to Pro: BVMSports.com. Take a bow Newtown Square! You are at ground zero for the explosive growth and new beginning made possible by your interest in sports and in Bringing People Together. Visit the BVMSports.com website or download the BVM Sports app today, to create your personal profile of sports you like to follow. Consider submitting through the BVMSports.com website (for online publication only) your own local feature stories, photos or videos about someone you know who is passionate about their sport and who you believe should become known by all of us in Newtown Square, and known to the world! Business Profile
Making Your Yard a Joy to Come Home to! by Christina Manning Photos by Sierra Clark Photography “Make your yard a joy to come home to!” is the motto of Robert J. Kleinberg Landscape Design, and they deliver on that. Bob Kleinberg grew up in eastern Delaware County and attended Monsignor Bonner High School. He continued his education at Villanova University, majoring in Psychology. He then decided to pursue his passion for horticulture, so he went on to get his degree in Plant Science at the University of Delaware. After he graduated, he started working for a landscaping business where he worked for five years. In 1986, Bob decided to start his own company, Robert J. Kleinberg Landscape Design. “I had always wanted to be my own boss,” he explained. Located at 114 Ashley Rd in Newtown Square, his company offers a wide variety of services including landscaping, low-voltage landscape lighting, hardscaping and Christmas Trees. Bob’s company offers their landscape lighting customers something unique. “We set up a lighting demonstration at their house so they can see what their house would look like if they were to install lights,” said Bob. The best part of this demonstration: It’s free. “I’ve always had an aptitude for electrical work,” explained Bob. “My father and brothers were all electrical engineers.”
Robert Kleinberg enjoying his handiwork
What Bob finds most enjoyable is seeing the finished product, especially on a lighting project. “There’s nothing better than seeing the customer’s reaction for the first time when everything is lit up!” Bob and his team consider lighting not just as an aesthetic feature but also as a safety and security feature. “Night lighting highlights some of the best views of your property but it’s also for safety. Lights can make steps and walkways easier for you, your family and visitors.” Another service Bob offers is installing trees, shrubs and seasonal planting of perennials for small and large backyards. “I am very hands-on,” said Bob. “This is a small company and that means I work closely with the customers and I get their input.” For example, the lighting installation requires Bob to come back when it gets dark out, to adjust the lights. “Sometimes that means that I’m returning to their house anywhere between 5 and 9pm, depending on the season, but I want to make sure everything looks good and the customer is satisfied. My wife says I pay too much attention to detail,” he said, laughing.

Bob and his wife, Mary Kate, have lived in Newtown Square since 2009 after living in East Lansdowne for 20 years while they raised their four children. “It was getting a bit congested there,” said Bob. “Now I can look out my window from my office and see all green lawns.” In his spare time, Bob tends to his vegetable garden and beekeeping. “I’ve always liked plants and the natural part of my work. I definitely have come full circle in my career. I can see myself being able to do planting and the lighting for years to come.”
“As a Newtown Square resident,” said Bob, “I have a vested interest in improving the community and making houses more beautiful.” For folks who want their home to have more curb appeal and/or safety features, Robert J. Kleinberg Landscape Design is the company for you. And Bob will be selling beautiful Christmas trees starting Friday Nov. 27 and going through Dec. 24. We are very thankful for our family, friends, faith and good health. This year we have had the opportunity to step out of our normal routine, to enjoy hikes and long bike rides in some of our state parks, and are grateful for the gift of time together and the calming beauty of nature. And we are thankful for our first responders — police, firefighters, and health care workers — who throughout the year have worked tirelessly to keep us safe.
We are thankful that we were able to have the wedding we initially planned, surrounded by all of our family and friends, without the additional stress and restrictions imposed by COVID-19. Although we had hoped to travel more as newlyweds, we did enjoy an awesome honeymoon in January, and have completed a lot of home projects since then!

During this crazy year we have a lot to be thankful for. One of the biggest blessings for us right now is the school our children attend. The teachers there have been patient, kind and enthusiastic. Although learning looks a little different, the Culbertson staff have been wonderful! Hang in there teachers, you are all doing a great job.
This past year brought surprising blessings for our family. We received unexpected, uninterrupted time together as a family, which is something we will always cherish as our girls grow. Regards, Colin, Megan, Cassidy and Cailyn Smith

2020 has been a very difficult and challenging year for everyone in every corner of the world. We have been very blessed to be safe and healthy among good friends, neighbors and family in our little corner here in Newtown Square. We are extremely grateful to have stayed healthy while working in the hospital. We are also grateful to our parents, all our neighbors, friends and frontline workers. Please continue to live life while respecting the dangers of COVID-19 by wearing face masks and practicing social distancing. Regards, Kevin, Roschi, Jasmin, Ella and Darius Sowti

Expert Contributor by Tom Rafferty Rafferty Painting & General Contracting
How to Choose the RIGHT CONTRACTOR Finding a good contractor requires more than common sense; you should also be aware of the real risks that come with choosing poorly. Unfortunately, many people do more research when buying a car than they do when choosing a contractor. Choosing the right contractor to build, remodel or paint your home can make the difference between a relatively stress-free project and many sleepless nights. Here are some simple steps you can take to ensure that your contractor is capable enough to get the job done. There are many horror stories of homeowners who were conned into paying for renovations that either never happened or were completely botched due to gross negligence. Over the past few years, consumer complaints against home construction and renovation contractors have been on the rise. Even if a contractor seems sincere and is offering you a “great deal,” if you can't verify references or you are being asked to pay upfront without first taking care of the legal formalities, watch out! Probably the most important question you need to ask any contractor is if they have Workers’ Compensation insurance. If they do not and one of their employees injures himself while working on your property, then you are liable and will be sued. Here are some quick upfront questions to ask a contractor, to get a good sense of their credibility:
• Should a construction error or problem arise, how much liability coverage do you have? (Around $1 million is usually considered sufficient.) • Can you provide several references and can we see the work you’ve done for them? • How many people are on your crew and how long have they been with your company? (If there’s no employees, it’s likely to be subcontract work. You should research the reputation of those subcontractors, but remember the contractor could switch them out at any time.) • Will there be a full-time foreman on the project? • Is there someone in your office to promptly answer questions we may have? • Do you have a state license? Local licenses? • Do you belong to any professional organizations related to your business? (This will speak to their reputation, local credi bility and the level of commitment they have in their business.) Contractors have a busy season when they are turning away work. The best time for you to get the most economical prices is in the winter months. When getting estimates, remember to compare apples to apples. When an estimate price is too good to be true, it usually is. Most importantly remember this: Quality is remembered long after the price is forgotten. NS

number of people regularly living in the home. You should also have the entire septic system inspected every few years, to make sure everything is still functioning as intended. Following these two maintenance tips alone can significantly increase your septic system’s life, perhaps by decades.
How to Avoid Potential Septic, Sewer and Stormwater Issues Maintaining your investment in your home requires a lot of maintenance, much of which is seasonal. Fall leaves are beautiful but must eventually be cleaned up. Your home’s exterior must be winterized and prepared to withstand freezing temperatures, snow and ice. Spring’s pleasant weather makes doing outside maintenance, lawn care and gardening enjoyable again. And summer’s blistering heat and humidity require regular maintenance of your home’s air-conditioning system. While we all live in our homes, “Out of sight, out of mind” can easily become the approach we take to what’s going on outside underground. It’s important to realize that over time, everything requires some sort of maintenance and care, including your home’s septic, sewer and stormwater management systems. The best way to treat your septic system is to have it pumped out every one to three years. That interval depends on the
For homes with sewer lines, keep in mind that all waste water and liquids from the home travels out and down a 4-inch diameter pipe. That includes cooking grease, soap products, and other liquids and semi-solids that can, over time, build up on the interior of that pipe. If your sewer line is located near trees, tree roots can and often do grow into sewer lines. In our area, most homes (except newer homes) have cast iron or terracotta piping underground. Over time, debris can build up inside sewer line piping, significantly reducing its flow-through diameter. Many homeowners assume that throwing some drain-clearing product down the pipe will keep it clear. The fact is that conditions inside the pipe require something more powerful and thorough: Water-jetting, which removes all the build-up inside the pipe, clears out the debris, and restores the pipe’s full diameter so everything can flow as it should. Your home’s stormwater management systems — gutters and downspouts — may go underground and also be out of sight and out of mind. Those downspouts can lead to or have sediment traps underground, with inverts, culverts or inlets blocked or packed with debris. If regular maintenance is not done, those systems can build up with sediment, leaves and other things that find their way down a drain or gutter. Your stormwater management drains will serve you well over the years if they’re regularly cleaned out and all the piping is water-jetted. NS

Mr. Vickers and his family at the Navy’s ceremonies to honor him at the Navy War Memorial and Museum November 11, 2019
This Veterans Day (Wednesday November 11), Newtown Square resident H. Eugene (“Gene”) Vickers will celebrate his 105th birthday. He is Marple Newtown’s oldest Veteran, so this is an event our entire community can celebrate! Mr. Vickers was born on November 11, 1915 (Armistice Day then; Veterans Day now), at his family’s farmhouse in Oakmont, PA. The youngest of seven children, his family moved to Havertown when he was quite young. After graduating from Haverford High School, he attended Wheaton College in Illinois. He also attended Philadelphia School of the Bible (now Cairn University), where he was employed for almost 45 years after World War II.

Last November 11, to celebrate Mr. Vickers’ 104th birthday, the Navy held ceremonies at the U.S. Navy War Memorial and Museum in Washington, DC. They presented him with a plaque honoring his service in World War II. And Newtown Township celebrated Mr. Vickers by passing a Resolution honoring him for his long life, his 65 years of residency in Newtown Township, and his many years of service to his country, his family and his community. Mr. Vickers greatly misses his dear wife Betty of 66 years since her passing almost 13 years ago. He is blessed with a large extended family that includes 11 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and one more on the way. He says his secret to such

Once There Was a Railroad by Doug Humes Once you could ride a railroad from Philadelphia to Marple and Newtown. The line was laid in 1893, connecting the Pennsylvania Railroad at Fernwood (Yeadon) to Newtown, with 10 stops along the way. The Marple stop was “Foxcroft,” located just east of where Sproul Road crosses Darby Creek. The line then bridged the road, following the creek into Radnor, then made a left turn at The Hunt station (south side of Hunt Road — the Radnor Hunt!). It continued parallel to Bryn Mawr Avenue, which it crossed on a high bridge near Malin Road, and then through farm properties to its end, a lumber yard along Rte 252 in Newtown Square, across the street from TD Bank. A freight station and a passenger station were erected at the terminus. By 1895, four daily trains ran each way, with limited weekend service. But clouds were on the horizon: In 1896, the Philadelphia & West Chester Traction Company built a trolley

line from 69th Street out West Chester Pike, through Marple, Newtown and on to West Chester. The trolley offered more frequent service, delivering passengers directly to the center of each community, unlike the railroad. The railroad’s passenger business suffered, with reduced service over the next few years, ceasing altogether in 1908. The freight line continued to run, taking milk and farm products from the Pennsylvania Hospital farm in Newtown through Marple, past the Swell bubble gum factory in Haverford, crossing West Chester Pike near Burger King, and making its way through Upper Darby to the connection with the Pennsylvania Railroad, where its contents were off-loaded and delivered to the Pennsylvania Hospital for the Insane (now Kirkbride Center) in West Philadelphia. But by 1951, the farm had been sold, the train ran just once a day; and in 1963 service from Grassland to Newtown Square ceased. Remnants remain: concrete bridge abutments along Bryn Mawr Avenue, stone bridge pillars in Ithan Creek near the Blue Route, and the freight station that was moved to Drexel Lodge, where it is the centerpiece of a railroad museum. Haverford has reclaimed part of the right-of-way for a walking trail. And

Newtown Square Presbyterian Church is GROWING! by Christina Manning Photos courtesy of Newtown Square Presbyterian Church
On Sunday, September 13th, you could feel the enthusiasm at Newtown Square Presbyterian Church! The parking lot was full of congregation members wearing masks and maintaining social distancing protocols, there to witness a groundbreaking ceremony for the church’s new addition that’s being built by Horst Construction. Plans for this expansion project began over five years ago, led by the Reverend Dr. Jeanne Thomas, the church’s “Growing Our Future” committee and the Capital Campaign Team. During the ceremony, Pastor Jeanne prayed: “As we break ground today, we take the first step in the construction of a new space for worship, study, and fellowship.”

The artist rendering of the new addition
As members of all ages came together, several church leaders expressed their excitement on this momentous occasion. James Kucera, co-chair of the project, said, “We are passionate about the vision God has laid out for us. Our church will be relevant for decades to come.” Lynne Corle added, “Our young families will have opportunities to become an even more vibrant community of faith.” And Ginny Berman summarized the strong feelings of God’s faithfulness even in the midst of COVID-19: “This is a time when we need our faith and want to expand our ministries to our entire community.” This space will welcome and accommodate NSPC’s growing membership, and ensure they can provide safe access for all ages. The addition’s exterior is expected to be completed in December, and the interior in February.
Leadership Team for the building project (L-R): Project Manager Dwayne Hoover (Horst Construction), Allen Corle, Rich Digby, Dot Gauntlett, Jim Shea, Buff Biddle, Pastor Jeanne Thomas and James Kucera
The enhancements to the church will include: • A well-equipped nursery adjacent to the sanctuary • A large multi-purpose room with a movable stage that provides first-floor convenience for activities and programs • A gathering space for social events • Enlarged ADA-compliant bathrooms and ramp that allows access to rooms on the main level • A music room for the choirs and an updated youth room with easy access to the multi-purpose room The first cornerstone for NSPC was laid in 1957, and now, over 60 years later, it is thrilling to see the church expand once again! Throughout the years of planning its addition, NSPC relied on this quote from the prophet Jeremiah 29:11: For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. Newtown Square Presbyterian Church invites the local community to join them on this journey of transformation, where they hope to provide ministry and mission for many years to come! The church is located at 3600 Goshen Road. Visit their website, www.NewtownSquarePres.org, for information about worship services, ministries and programs offered. NS
Prayers for the new addition submitted by members of the congregation and preserved in a time capsule beneath its foundation
From the Air Answer (pg. 13): The open space is the northern side of the land in Marple Township, formerly owned by the Archdiocese of Philadelphia, along Reed Road at the entrance to the Lawrence Park Industrial Park. The tall landmarks in the distance are antenna towers, one being the all-brick chimney of a formerly used waste incinerator inside the Industrial Park.

The B enefits of P erformance B ased M usic E ducation If you, your children or your grandkids are considering learning how to play a musical instrument, consider the many benefits of a performance-based music education program compared to traditional music education. Traditional weekly music lessons have students learning music theory and concepts with no specific “end game.” There’s just the repetitive short-term goal of going home, practicing, and having the instructor check on the student’s progress from week to week. Performance-based music instruction also teaches students music theory and concepts, of course, but it also gives students weekly opportunities to immediately demonstrate what they’ve learned about “how music works.” Take, for example, a minor pentatonic scale: Instead of an instructor just talking about and showing a few scale patterns that students then play a few times, students instead learn to play songs that use those blues scale patterns, songs made popular by actual bands. A perfect example is “Black Dog” by Led Zeppelin. As students experience first-hand how and why music theory and concepts are actually used, the fun that can come from performing such real music can significantly speed up the learning curve. And team sports is alive and well with performance-based music instruction! Throughout the year, groups of about 25 students work as a team on many songs that they perform frequently in live shows. This gives each student opportunities
to play the musical instrument they’re learning in small bands made up of different combinations of students. So, over the course of the season, each student is likely to play in at least one band with all other students. Additional benefits for students — life skills — from this type of learning and performance-based environment are cooperation, teamwork, communication and public speaking skills, and goal-setting. As students achieve their goals for performing all the songs for each new show (every three months), their self-confidence grows exponentially. Students who started out too shy to go on the stage are, within a few seasons, “rock stars” in their regular lives as well as with their music instructors and fellow students. Songs aren’t learned for simply the instructor’s satisfaction; they’re learned to entertain large live audiences (in-person or on streaming video). Performance-based music instruction may seem revolutionary compared to traditional music instruction. But it’s not really if you think about why people invented musical instruments and music theory and concepts: To create and share the joy that music adds to life!

CandyCare 2020 Update by Liz Burnett Photo courtesy of Patti Bruno
CandyCare is a happy Newtown Square-based ministry that has been bringing tons of comfort, joy and CANDY to our less fortunate neighbors for the past 21 years. Started by Patti and Gabrielle Bruno, a dynamic mother/daughter duo, they successfully developed and coordinated a huge team of volunteers, schools, stores and businesses throughout Delaware County and beyond, all of whom collect Halloween candy to donate to children, men and women who call the streets or a shelter their home. The Brunos’ Halloween tradition began in 1998, when Gabrielle was a first-grader at St. Anastasia’s School in Newtown Square. That first year, the Brunos collected 200 pounds of candy at their school. Over the past 21 years, countless children smilingly gave up their treats and stores donated unsold sweets, as CandyCare grew to include over 45 schools and businesses collecting THOUSANDS of pounds of candy! Last year, CandyCare collected a whopping 5,475 POUNDS of candy!
This year, sadly, there will be no candy collection due to the COVID-19 pandemic. So we’re taking this opportunity to give a huge shout-out to St. Luke’s Greek Orthodox Church in Broomall for kindly opening their doors each year as the collection site for all this candy! Pastor Christ Kontos there loves kids and candy and serving the community in this way. Our community has been blessed by this service opportunity, which easily teaches service through giving to the youth who give up their Halloween candy to help those less fortunate. The Brunos sincerely thank every single person, school and business who made past years’ drives so successful. You all are the heart that has made CandyCare so vibrant and love-based all these years! Let’s all pray that this time next year, we can resume CandyCare’s mission of sharing our blessings and making life sweeter for those less fortunate. NS

Mask and Zoom Face Your face is more important than ever! Movement around the eyes and eyebrows is the only area that most of us have to express ourselves these days. Mask-wearing, today’s new norm, is wreaking havoc on our skin and causing women and men of all ages to suffer from “maskne.” The humid and sticky environment your masks create around your nose, mouth and chin impose friction and occlusion on the skin, and causes skin oils to proliferate and bacteria to become trapped, thus clogging pores and causing acne cysts. Botox and other face-numbing agents have moved out of style, replaced by the holistic approach to clearer, healthy skin, which

People working from home and using Zoom and Skype are often seeing themselves through a screen for the first time, and their facial appearance is at an all-time high on their priority list. So, how can you maintain a healthy firm skin and treat “maskne” through COVID-19? 1. Start a new skin care regimen that targets all areas of your facial concerns at any age. 2. Schedule a consultation to see which treatments will best suit your needs, and then commit to a consistent routine. 3. Maintain a healthy diet with antioxidant-rich foods.

Patented technology (a medical-grade device) is now available to cleanse, extract and hydrate skin, clear dead skin cells, loosen pores and prep them for extraction using a mix of glycolic acid, salicylic acid and botanical extracts. Then the device uses a unique vacuum-powered extraction method to remove all build-up from the skin in a virtually painless procedure. While the double-treatment wand sucks up dead skin in one chamber, the other chamber releases and pumps the skin full of soothing nutrients such as hyaluronic acid, oxygen, vitamin C, and peptide growth factors. The most effective treatments also combine LED light therapy, to help combat aging and bacteria build-up. The bottom line is in just 30 minutes, you can have clearer, more radiant skin with little to no irritation or downtime. No special preparations are needed, and you can immediately return to normal activities, including applying makeup.

A whole-house water filter system would filter the public water through a bed of granulated activated carbon. This improves the taste of your city water by removing the chlorine or chloramine added to protect water in the distribution system. Also, the system will remove from city water the cloudiness, turbidity, foul taste and odor that the miles of distribution piping and fittings may impart. This system basically provides bottle-quality water at every faucet and showerhead. Having all the water treated can extend the life of appliances such as dishwashers, washing machines, and hot water tanks from premature failure.
What’s In Your Water? Water quality is becoming more of a priority for homeowners these days. Most homes either have “city water” or a private well system. We recommend having a water sample taken, to determine the water quality and how to treat it. You will need to think about whether you want to have a pointof-use system or whole-house treatment. We recommend both, to ensure you're getting the best water quality for your home. A reverse osmosis (RO) system is perfect for providing your drinking water at the kitchen sink. It requires a separate faucet and the equipment is neatly stored below the sink. The RO system removes just about everything, to provide the purest and cleanest drinking water. It protects against lead, arsenic, pesticides and bacteria, and also removes the fluoride from the water. An RO system typically would not be able to keep up with the water flow for an entire house, so it’s basically used only as a point-of-use solution.
Some homes may need a water softener if it's determined hard water exists. It is recommended that if your water hardness is greater than 7 grains per gallon, then you may want to consider a water softener. Homes in this area often have an average of 10 grains or more. Hard water contains dissolved minerals and metals, which can create ugly stains on sinks, toilets and bathtubs. Mineral deposits known as scale or lime can build up on showerheads, pots, glassware, etc. Hard water makes soap and laundry detergent less effective, and causes linens and clothing to fade and appear dull. Washing clothes and linens in hard water can also cause premature wear on the fabrics. Minerals in hard water can also have negative effects on your hair and skin. Most of the human body is made up of water. Quality drinking water is important to our health and well-being. Water is critical to most items we purchase and consume in one way or another. It’s definitely a smart idea to have your home’s water tested to make sure you and your family are getting the best available. NS
