A Lifetime in Newtown Square by Craig Whitney Photography by Dan Hall Prestige Photography

Brad and Lauren Kohlhepp first met in 2009, got engaged before the end of the year and by 2010 they were married. Though the relationship may have been a bit of a whirlwind, their hearts were grounded in the community of Newtown Square and building a family there together. Brad earned his bachelor’s degree in elementary education at the University of Delaware. He would go on to get a master’s degree at the University of Pennsylvania and is currently pursuing an Ed.D at Immaculata. Brad was a principal at St Anastasia School, and is currently the principal of Interboro Kindergarten Academy of the Interboro School District. Brad and Lauren first met when Lauren’s cousin introduced them. Lauren got her bachelor’s degree in nursing and currently works at CHOP as a nurse. She and her family have been members of the Newtown Square community her whole life. Having never left, Lauren has the opportunity to raise her children with her own parents in the same community.

The Kohlhepps currently live in the Valley View Farms section of Newtown Township, which Brad and Lauren consider a wonderful neighborhood for young families. Lauren’s parents first moved to the neighborhood in 1986, and still reside there with their children and grandchildren. “It’s a close-knit community where people of all ages co-mingle and interact positively,” Brad says. “Everyone always looks out for each other and is welcoming to the new families that move in.” The feel of the neighborhood is similar to what Brad and Lauren have always loved about Newtown Square. There is a youthful energy to the town, with children of all ages outside enjoying a nice day. “There is a great neighborhood vibe and the children of the neighborhood are always outside riding bikes, jumping on trampolines, and playing sports,” Brad explains. Sports have always been a large part of Brad’s life. Brad is a season ticket holder for the Eagles, the coach of his son’s baseball team, and a lifelong fan of Notre Dame. Though Lauren may not be an avid sports fan herself, one of her favorite things to do is to watch her children play sports. For the Kohlhepps, sports have always been great opportunities to be active, engaged, and involved. Brad and Lauren will happily trade their time to help keep their children active. “Having three young kids, our hobbies really

revolve around their activities and keeping them active.” Brad says.

The First Sign of a Good Repair is No Sign at All.

Their oldest, Kayla, is a cheerleader at Marple Newtown High School and is heading into her senior year. Brendan, at 6 years old, participates in Marple Junior Tigers Flag Football, baseball, and Marple Newtown Youth Lacrosse. At 4 years old, Maeve is already a part of Marple Newtown Soccer and dances at Fhrom the Top. Michael, 2 years old, is a handful enough as it is. Brendan and Maeve both attend St Annie’s, first grade and Pre-K respectively. Education has always been an important part of their lives. Brad has a strong appreciation for education and extracurricular involvement. Having a very long and rich history in education and currently the principal of a kindergarten academy, Brad wants his own children to grow and thrive in an educational environment.

Free time can be hard to find for parents of four, but Brad and Lauren make a consistent effort to be active and work on their physical health. Brad will go to various gyms or work out from home, and Lauren prefers kickboxing at Ellis Athletic Center. They are members of the Rose Tree Woods Swim Club, and make sure to frequent the pool as much as they can in the summer with their children. Continued on page 8

Taking several trips on the weekends and one major two-week trip later in the summer, the Kohlhepps love the small-town, family-friendly feel of Sea Isle. Whether it’s fishing with the family in the morning or grabbing some ice cream and walking along the beach at sunset, the town only demands that you relax and smile while you’re there. Having such a young family, the surrounding community is very important to ground you and make you feel welcomed. “I came to the area for the first time ten years ago and I fell in love instantly with the community,” Brad says. “Newtown Square offers everything you want when raising a family.” Brad and Lauren are planning to move to a new home for their growing family, but have every intention of staying in Newtown Square. Celebrating Life:

Creative Memorial Service Ideas by Robert L. D’Anjolell Jr. F.D., D’Anjolell Memorial Homes At the heart of a funeral ceremony, there should be a celebration of life. Regardless of where a person lives, or what culture they lived in, the end of someone’s life should be a celebration of a life well-lived. A memorial service may be a somber time, but there is still opportunity to reflect on all of the positive moments that happen in a lifetime. These creative methods for celebrating life will bring out the joy and happiness of the life your loved one has lived. Memory Boards The hobbies and passions of a person are some of the most positive defining features of a lifetime. Near the front entrance, the family can fill a large table with items and creative projects that reflect those hobbies and passions. For example, a person that loved to travel could have a map displayed on the memory board with images of their journeys around the world. Memory boards are a great opportunity to be artistic and creative in a way that celebrates the prized hobbies and passions that your loved one was the most excited about. And for all the friends and family at the service, the board is a warm reminder of the best times of this person’s life.

Guest Books Guest books encourage the family and friends at the service to write a memory of or a letter to the one who has passed. The book can be decorated with photos and memorabilia, with spaces for the guests to write in. At the end of the service, the guest book is packed with memories and kind words. Memorial Slideshow With a combination of videos, photos and text, a memorial slideshow can be played for the guests to watch as a group. The home videos and vacation photos, all combined with thoughtful words and music will make a presentation to draw laughs and tears from the room. Memorial Tree Seedlings As guests are leaving the service, hand out tree seeds to be planted in honor of the one who has passed. This is a symbolic celebration of life, and one the guests will carry for years. As their tree grows every year, each guest will look back on the memory of their dear friend or family member. Beneath the somber surface of a memorial service, there are endless opportunities to celebrate a life with creativity and warmth. NS

Business Profile

Luigi & Giovanni’s:

Italian Roots in a Modern Community by Craig Whitney Photogrpahy By Dan Hall, Prestige Photography

John (Giovanni) D’Alessandro & Lou (Luigi) Lemme

Luigi & Giovanni’s has lasted 41 years in Newtown Square by responding to customers and adapting to the culture. From its beginnings as an old-world butcher shop and deli, to the fast-paced present, Luigi & Giovanni’s has remained an important part of Newtown Square. John D’Alessandro raised his family around the store. Some current employees have worked there since the opening. Inside and out, with customers and employees, the culture of Luigi & Giovanni’s has revolved around family. John and his business partner, Lou, started working together after buying an old-world Italian butcher shop. The shop originally served as a meat supplier for the Newtown Square community. Over the years, Lou and John paid close attention to their business while it was going well, which kept them ahead of the curve. Something Lou and John learned is that convenience has become a major factor in modern shopping. A person’s time is the most valuable part of the consumer experience, and companies that know how to respond quickly are the ones which last. One of the more recent decisions is that, while holding onto traditional Italian products, convenience and speed must always be improved. Though it may have been hard to face this fact at the beginning, John and Lou knew the store had to change. They couldn’t serve only meat and produce anymore; the customer has changed. Both parents work jobs now, with children that have to be picked up or dropped off somewhere. “We do make it fresh-cooked here,” John explained, “so when you get home from work at 5 o’clock and you need to take care of your kids, we provide a home-cooked meal for you.”

Butcher Shop • Authentic Italian Market • Neighborhood Deli

The new high-value product is a well-cooked carryout meal that can be picked up from the counter and served for dinner at home. Even with this new offering, customers can still find a roast pork sandwich, chicken parmesan, stuffed Italian peppers or meatballs, all served with Abruzzese-style New York bread. The Italian roots and the modern adaptations combine to reflect the authentic ownership and a close attention to the community. The aisles of Luigi & Giovanni’s reflect this change. Customers can still get freshly-carved and packaged meats just like when the Italian-specialty shop opened in 1976. In addition to the old-fashioned butcher, Luigi & Giovanni’s now offers a wide variety of made-to-order sandwiches and entrees for individuals and families. There is a produce section with fresh modern produce and Italian offerings like olives, peppers, international cheeses and an assortment of Abruzzese-style bread. John and his wife, Teresa, have been married for 41 years, and have raised three children, all now grown. They are now also grandparents to six grandchildren, with a seventh on the way. Life is good and family is a blessing. For over 41 years, John has witnessed Newtown Square grow and change. Some people move away, others moved in. Some have been here the whole time and have no plans of leaving. From the young families moving here to the generations that have called this town home, Newtown Square is a place of tradition, family, and food. “I appreciate the people of Newtown Square,” John said. “I have been in business here for 41 years - not many people can say that. The community is good to me and supports me.” John has no plans of leaving the town he built his store in and his life around. “We eat, breathe, and fight together. Sometimes you fight with each other but we always stick together in the community.” NS

Cool Alternative:

The Pros and Cons of Ductless Air Conditioning by Len Sciulli Len Sciulli & Sons Heating & Air Conditioning

Ductless air conditioning may be a valuable alternative when it comes to keeping cool for the summer. Opposed to the standard central air conditioning unit with large ducts installed through a home, a ductless system works independently to filter the air and move cool air through the house. For those considering whether they should get a ductless air conditioning unit or central air, this pros and cons list can be a valuable guide.

PROS Easy Installation Installation of these systems are much simpler than central air conditioning. Where central air requires fitting of large ducts around the house, ductless air conditioning is installed with thin refrigerant lines and takes a fraction of the time. Long Life Ductless air conditioning can have a lifespan of 15 to 20 years with proper, regular maintenance. With the ductless design, there is a lower risk of gains in heat, air leaks or imbalance of pressure. This is the same estimated lifespan of a central air conditioning unit. Energy-Efficient As mentioned above, there is a lower risk of air leaks and pressure imbalances, which increases the energy efficiency of this system. By simply removing the large, complicated duct system, a ductless system can increase efficiency by up to 30 percent. Use of a ductless system can often include a better tax break. Every air conditioning unit comes with a Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio (SEER), which dictates the tax breaks and additional costs. A central air unit will range from 10 to 15 in SEER rating, but because of the energy advantages, ductless systems range from 20 to 30. CONS Appearance By the nature of the product, ductless systems have no duct to be framed in and are often installed onto the wall or on the ceiling. Based on personal preference, this may be seen as an intrusion to the room or out of place with the design. This may come to personal preference, and how you like the look and feel of your room. NS

Local Stars

of Newtown Township by Craig Whitney Images courtesy of Robert Humble

Bob Humble: Illustrating History Bob Humble is an illustrator in Newtown Square, having dedicated most of his career to sharing pieces of Delaware County history in the form of illustrations. Whether it’s the oldest tree in Pennsylvania or Revolutionary War battles at the Brandywine, Humble used comic-book illustration to put history in a modern context. Humble moved to Newtown Square 13 years ago with his wife after raising their children. He loves walking the beautiful landscapes and being at peace in the quiet of nature. It’s the kind of slow pace that Humble has longed for after years of working in a fast-paced environment. He and his wife moved into a cape cod in Newtown Square, where it’s easier to slow down. One of his favorite things to do in Newtown square is drive along back roads and explore the quiet farms and treecovered dirt paths.

Humble has recently released a comic book collection of short horror stories called Strange Gruel. The series has just been released on Amazon and was written by himself and two of his friends. Strange Gruel is written in the same style of horror comics from the 50s, with illustrations in strip format in full color. The retro comic combines classic horror, B movie charm and, as always for Humble, an old-fashioned story. “Strange Gruel is like a cross between The Twilight Zone and Outer Limits, and there is always a twist ending,” Bob explained. Learn more about Strange Gruel at www.strangegruel.com. If Humble could give one piece of advice to the community he has spent so many years in, it would be optimism.

Humble has created hundreds of illustrations over his career, but the ones he takes the most pride in are the historical comics he would write for the Delaware County Times. In these comics, Humble was able to tell a story about the history of his county in his own style. By crafting these stories in an interesting visual format, Humble is able to share the important pieces of the history of the community in an engaging way. Readers that are engaged by his comic-book style can now get a better understanding of the people and events that have come before them and made this area what it is today. Humble has always loved to illustrate. His initial inspiration came when he was three years old watching the 1933 film King Kong on TV. Partly due to the limitations on special effects, the visual accomplishments of the movie were used to support a story. Looking at the modern movie compared to old classics like King Kong, Humble wishes movies could focus more on the story and less on the big effects. Having dedicated his life to the visual effects, Humble still prioritizes the story in everything he does. “I love telling the story,” Humble explained. “The visuals should support the story, they should not dominate the story.”

“I would like to remind people to be grateful we live in a nice town with nice people,” Humble says. “In the stresses of daily life, we can easily forget that.” Through a unique, engaging method of storytelling, Humble was able to share the history of Delaware County with a broader base of people. Thank you, Bob, for the years of service you’ve committed to your community and sharing the stories of others. History Spotlight

Newtown Township History Spotlight by Stephen J. Edgcumbe Photos by Eric Hartline Newtown Township dates to 1681. It was incorporated as a township in 1684. In 1683, William Penn proposed building the first inland town west of Philadelphia at the intersection of Newtown Street Road (Route 252), laid out in 1683, and Goshen Road, laid out in 1687. The town was to be called “Central Square” or “New Town.” Penn’s dream town, however, never came to fruition. The main intersection of the area later became Newtown Street Road and West Chester Pike. Today, this area is known as Newtown Square. Some of the historic buildings in the Newtown Square area remain and many have found new uses, such as the Fox Chase Inn building and the Hood Octagonal School. The Fox Chase Inn building, shown here in a 2011 photograph, stands on the north side of West Chester Pike just east of Bryn Mawr Avenue. It was alternately known as the Fox Chase Inn and the Fawkes Tavern and dates to c. 1724. It remained an inn until 1870, when it became a private residence. Today, it houses law offices.

The Hood Octagonal School

The Fox Chase Inn

The Hood Octagonal School is shown here in a 2011 photograph. It stands on the south side of West Chester Pike at School House Lane and Dunwoody Drive, just east of Bryn Mawr Avenue. It is on the grounds of the Dunwoody Village property. The eight-sided schoolhouse, one of Newtown’s earliest schools, was built in 1841 and served as a local school for about 25 years before being abandoned. It was restored in the 1960s and was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2006. The information for this article is excerpted from “West Chester Pike” by Stephen J. Edgcumbe, published by Arcadia Publishing. The book can be found at area bookstores, independent retailers, and online retailers, or through Arcadia Publishing at www.ArcadiaPublishing.com. NS

Friends and Neighbors of Newtown Square, when you find yourself enjoying our new, free monthly magazine, and recognize Marple Newtown advertising on these pages, please know we don’t call them “advertisers.” We call them “sponsors” because, well, that’s just what they are. They are sponsors of Newtown Square homeowners who believe it’s important that our community has its own monthly magazine like the one you are holding. We have our local “sponsors” to thank. Our sponsors may not sponsor a NASCAR racecar or some big national charity, or even a local athlete, but they sponsor you, as a resident homeowner of Newtown Square. Some are “Expert Contributors” sharing insights from their profession in their feature articles we publish for your benefit, but all our advertising sponsors are clearly showing us they care about their customers living in Newtown Square. The businesses you see advertising on our pages have all joined the party that has all our friends and neighbors celebrating that we finally have our own monthly magazine for the benefit of residents, families, businesses and Newtown Township homeowners. Our sponsors have this in common: most live right here in our Marple Newtown Community, and like us, they “buy local” whenever possible. That’s because they know how hard it is to compete against big box stores, chains and websites selling online which never put anything back into our community. In my work to bring Newtown Square Friends & Neighbors to print, I learned something. I learned that businesses in our community are very special! They care about us. And not just because they hope to sell us their goods and services. They really do care about us and our families. Seeing them reach
