Honor Flight Philadelphia Seeking Women Veterans of WWII, The Korean War and The Vietnam War by Bob Blaisse The Philadelphia Chapter of Honor Flight is part of a national nonprofit organization dedicated to helping American veterans visit the World War II, Korean War and Vietnam War memorials without cost. The Chapter is looking to celebrate local women for service to their country during WW II, the Korean War or the Vietnam War, by inviting female veterans on an all-expense paid, full-day excursion to Washington, D.C. You can never be repaid for your service and sacrifice to your country, but your community wants to show you its great appreciation. The All-Women Honor Flight Tour of Honor to Washington, D.C., will launch on September 21st to view those war memorials dedicated to your military service and sacrifice. Transportation, meals and memorabilia will be provided to veterans at NO COST. If you are a female veteran who served during World War II, The Korean War or The Vietnam War, or you know one, and would like to learn more about this All-Female Honor Flight Philadelphia trip, contact Honor Flight Philadelphia President Andrew Schiavello at: 610-662-1812, or email: Andrew@HonorFlightPhiladelphia.org.

ON THE COVER The Tulskie Family at St. Albans Swim & Tennis Club in Newtown Square
I’ve been told by many readers that when our first edition arrived in the mail, they knew something very different was under way. The combination of our very local and friendly magazine name, quality design, and of course having a Newtown Township family on the cover, made it understandable immediately that Newtown Square hometown pride was taking a big leap forward. As we begin our second year, we do so with twice the page count and three times as many advertisers than when we launched. We call our advertisers “Sponsors” because the financial commitment these local business leaders make to our magazine makes it possible for our hometown magazine to be mailed for free each month, and to also be available online at: www.NewtownSqaureMag.com. In this anniversary edition we also welcome two new Sponsors and Expert Contributors to Newtown Square Friends & Neighbors, and both also have their first Expert Contributor Feature articles in our magazine this month along with their first ads. We welcome from Bryn Mawr Glass, brothers Dave Gura and Lew Gura. They are bona fide Experts, for sure. Bryn Mawr Glass (located now in Havertown) has been the local leader in custom glass and mirror for any kind of residential or commercial project for over 70 years! And Dave and Lew are not wasting time in sharing their expertise with us. Check out their very first Expert Contributor feature article this month on page 18. Our other new Sponsor and Expert Contributor is our new Financial Advisor in Residence, Ryan Gray of Oppenheimer & Co. Ryan has impressed me with his integrity, and his knowledge of financial markets. I highly recommend Ryan Gray. Thank you, Ryan, for agreeing to serve Newtown Square Friends & Neighbors as our go-to guy for answers to our financial investment questions. Check out Ryan’s first Expert Contributor feature article this month on page 29. Thanks for a great first year. If possible, reach out to our new Sponsors, Dave and Lew of Bryn Mawr Glass, and Ryan Gray at Oppenheimer & Co., to thank them for their sponsorship of our Newtown Square community. And whenever possible, Shop Local.

Don’t Be shocked When Buying a Home
Buying a home can be an exciting time in your life. When looking for your family’s next home, it can be easy to just select based on the feel of the house or its amenities. Although that’s important, to avoid further unknown costs, it’s just as important to have the house inspected for the major systems before you dive in. The different major systems in the house can be large expenses to fix. Here are some things to look for on the electrical side to ensure a smooth transition into your new home.
Grounding in electrical systems allows for a “backup,” or safety plan, for an electrical current to go into the ground in case of a circuit malfunction. It is a safety hazard if the electrical system is functioning without grounding. A professional electrician will be able to test a system’s grounding and health on inspection. It’s also important to have a professional check into your systems in the kitchen or in other areas such as the bathrooms and basement. Kitchens require specific outlets that have GFCI (ground fault circuit interrupters) installed. The absence of GFCI outlets in rooms with sinks or water pipes is something you definitely should get checked out.
Martella Electric Company is a team of courteous, professional, and highly trained electricians. Our priority is to deliver superior customer service backed by a 100% satisfaction guarantee.
You will also want to take a good look at the circuit breaker panel. Most houses today have an electrical service of 100 - 200 Amps. If the house you're considering buying was built in the 1960s or before and hasn’t had much updating, it’s a good idea to have someone look into the electrical system to see if it needs to be updated.

While you walk through the house, notice the location and condition of the electrical outlets (also known as receptacles). Notice whether there's any physical cracks or rust, and whether they have a two-prong or three-prong slot. Many homes built before the 1960s still have two-prong outlets, which are not grounded and may not handle power surges safely. If an outlet looks old, it could be a sign of outdated wiring or a lack of grounding.
August 2019
Although it can be daunting, it’s important to know the value of your next home. If there are electrical problems in the property, it is going to cost you a large expense in the future. Knowing the condition of the house you’re thinking of buying can be a great negotiating tool and will save you money in the long run. You can still get the house of your dreams without any nightmares to surprise you later. NS

Resident Feature
Team Tulskie: A Family Unit in Newtown Square Ed and Patti Tulskie
Ed and Patti both grew up in Springfield but were from different parishes. They met when they both attended Cardinal O’Hara High School. They dated for several years but would go their separate ways after Ed’s second year of college. Their paths would cross again years later. “We were always friends, kept in touch,” Patti explained.
by Craig Whitney Photography by Shannon Lynn Photography www.ShannonLynnPhotography.com We would like to thank
for sponsoring this month’s Family Feature.
Patti received her undergraduate at West Chester University, then graduated from Widener University with a master’s degree in elementary education and a reading specialist certificate. After attending Lehigh University, Ed went into financial services. He always had a passion for acting, though, and decided to move to New York City to pursue his goal. He had some success in a commercial and a music video, including a lead role in Bon Jovi’s first-ever music video, Silent Night. He eventually returned to the Newtown Square area and to his career in the financial services industry. When the two reconnected, it was like no time had passed. Within a matter of months, Ed and Patti eloped to Elkton, Maryland. “It was the kind of thing where we had so much history, and once we were back together we knew we were going to spend our lives together,” Ed said. The marriage was then blessed by Ed’s cousin, Fr. Bob Chapman at St. Anastasia Church, where Patti had been a parishioner for some time. This gave the entire family and a few close friends the chance to celebrate the marriage. In the coming years, they would have three children: Grace, Rose (nicknamed Muffy by Grace before birth), and Jack. When Patti and Ed got married, she was living in a Newtown Square apartment. Soon thereafter, they moved to their first house in Newtown Square. As their family grew to five, they looked for their next home, Ed asked Patti where she would like to live. Ed said her reply was, “We can live wherever you want, as long as it’s in Newtown Square.” “I had been living here since 1986 and loved it,” Patti raved. “This was home to me, simple as that.” Patti is employed by the Chester County Intermediate Unit as a Reading Specialist. Ed has his own food ingredients distribution company in Newtown Square.

Grace, now age 23, attended St. Anastasia, then Archbishop John Carroll High School. She ran track and cross country all through grade school and track all four years in high school. She still has a passion for running. Grace graduated from the University of Delaware with a degree in accounting and finance. “Grace is a hard worker and always has been,” Patti explained. “She would babysit after school and on weekends, and has had her own money for a long time now.”
1977!
Grace currently works in the Investment Manager Services department at SEI Investments. Having recently graduated from college, she is happy to be working full-time. Grace has rented a house in Sea Isle City with her friends for the summer, and heads down the shore every weekend. Ed and Patti are very proud that she is independent enough one year out of college to manage her life so well. Muffy, who is excited for her 21st birthday this fall, has been planning the celebration for months. She attended Newtown Square Presbyterian Church Nursery School, as did her brother and sister. She is currently in her last year at St. Katherine’s Day School, which is a special education school housed within Archbishop Carroll where she and her brother could go to school together. Muffy works in Newtown Square at From the Top Studio of Dance with her friend, Sheila Turner, the dance studio’s Owner. She is a greeter and an assistant social media content creator. Muffy also recently began interning at Creative Financial Group, a local financial planning company. Continued on page 10

Everybody’s friend: Muffy Tulskie
“Muffy likes to say, ‘We’re Team Tulskie!’” Patti added. “When Ed and I were in Pre-Cana, we heard the phrase ‘You’re both pulling the same wagon.’ They’re both the same idea, how it’s important to work together and stay together through life’s ups and downs.” Team Tulskie has stayed together through it all, and they owe it partially to the Newtown Square community around them. Newtown Square was a commitment they made decades ago, and one they continue to cherish today. NS
“Muffy is personable, never had a bad day in her life,” said Ed. “That’s right,” Muffy added. “Muffy is a planner,” Patti joined in. “She loves to fill her time with fun activities with family and friends.” Muffy has played Challenger baseball at NELL for years. She is also part of the Unified Bocce team at Carroll, which pairs Carroll students with St. Katherine students. This year was their first year as a team, and they won districts. Muffy and the team got to travel to Hershey, PA for the state competition. Patti and Ed’s son Jack attended St. Anastasia Elementary School, and recently graduated from Archbishop Carroll High School. He attended St. Anastasia Elementary School before that. Jack was a member of the National Honor Society and the Best Buddies program, and has played many sports through the years. In addition to Varsity baseball and golf at Carroll, Jack was a member of the 13-year old Broomall Newtown Babe Ruth team that won the World Series in 2014, an accomplishment still celebrated today. He continues to play Legion baseball at Broomall Newtown for his last year. Jack is heading to Virginia Tech to pursue a degree in engineering.

Tucker is a popular member of the neighborhood. With the electric fence, Tucker is outside most days saying hello to the dogs in the neighborhood. Key Benefits of Martial Arts
Level Up Black Belt Academy
Training for Children
The Martial Arts provide children with many outstanding benefits. When you think of Martial Arts you may envision the action scenes from television and movies, the violence of the UFC or maybe you see it as a means of self-protection. While these are a part of Martial Arts that are popularized through the media, the true benefits are what lie under the surface. By learning Martial Arts from a reputable instructor and studio that specializes in children’s instruction, the following benefits will permeate all areas of a child’s life:
Teach Them the 3 Rules of Concentration: 1. Focus Your Eyes – When someone is speaking, maintain eye contact with them to show you are listening. 2. Focus Your Mind – Think about what is being said and how it applies to you and how you are going to use the information. 3. Focus Your Body – Keep your body still and under control. These same principles can be applied to every area of life. For example, a child playing baseball needs to keep their eyes on the ball, think about what they are going to do with the ball and then have their body execute the catch, throw or swing with accuracy. Martial Arts training is one of the most beneficial things you will ever do for your child. Make sure they reach their black belt. This is a highly revered accomplishment on a college application or a job resume. Check out the schools in your area, speak with the instructor, and speak with parents at the school. If a school will not allow you to do those things, move on. NS
Self-Confidence – This is a character trait that is gained by accomplishing small goals that lead towards a long-term goal. Children need to experience the powerful feeling of success, like attaining goals to take on bigger challenges. These small successes serve as stepping stones that eventually develop into massive self-confidence. The curriculum is broken down to allow beginner students the ability to experience success and increase the challenge each time a new rank is earned. Martial Arts will provide a student with 12 belt advancements, from white belt through black belt, that serve as these successes. Fitness – Getting kids up and moving is an important part of keeping them healthy and fit. Martial Arts classes provide physical training that will increase the student’s strength, endurance and flexibility. These are important aspects that will improve a child’s performance in other sports as well. Martial Arts promotes heart-healthy children and is a fantastic way to get them off the couch and their electronic devices. Concentration – This is a key part of Martial Arts training that is beneficial to every aspect of a child’s life. Kids are told they need to focus or concentrate at school and home but many times have never learned how to make the improvement.

Facts You Didn’t Know
about Firepoint Grill by Jillian Fligge Photos courtesy of Firepoint Grill
With its spacious outdoor patio, Saturday & Sunday Brunch menu and wood-fired rotisserie and pizza oven, Firepoint Grill is making a splash in Newtown Square this summer. Firepoint delivers a dining experience unlike anything else in the area. The restaurant’s core goal, to deliver quality meals with great service in a unique and enjoyable atmosphere, is what keeps local diners returning. But such a goal is only achieved through endless planning and a talented team. How did it all come together? Here are four key elements behind what truly makes this Newtown Square gem a can’t-miss restaurant.
1.
12
Why “Firepoint”? The origin of the restaurant’s name is actually a very simple one. “Firepoint” is a reference to the point at which a substance reaches a high enough temperature for combustion – aka the point at which it bursts into flames. With Firepoint’s expansive wood-fired menu (you can smell the oak and cherry wood right when you enter their parking lot!) the name truly speaks to the meticulous preparation of some of their top menu items – like pizza prepared in a custom wood-fired pizza oven that was made in Italy.
Newtown Square Friends & Neighbors

Firepoint's Outdoor Bar Area
2.
The family ties. Firepoint is part of a larger family of restaurants that got its start a bit north of Newtown Square. Restaurateur George Paxos, owner of Paxos Restaurants, opened his first restaurant in Bethlehem, PA in 1980. That property, now known as Blue Grillhouse and Event Center, quickly established itself as the forefront of fine dining trends, and is still welcoming guests through its doors today. Firepoint is the newest of the Paxos Restaurants, which also includes Italian, Mexican, and Steakhouse concepts in Center Valley, PA. Every Paxos Restaurant offers a truly unique menu, design, and style, but all with the same commitment to quality food, atmosphere, and service.
3.
Healthy and sustainable ingredients are a priority. Tasty meals might be the end goal, but what goes into each dish is always top of mind at Firepoint. Signature dishes, like wood-fired rotisserie chicken, are prepared using locally sourced, free-range organic chicken from Bell & Evans. A customizable Fresh Fish entrée section states on their menu that all fish is sustainably sourced for a minimal environmental impact. And when it comes to produce, Firepoint looks no further than Primo – the produce company also founded by George Paxos. Paxos started Primo in 1991 with a single truck in order to seek out quality produce good enough to serve in his very first restaurant. Now, Primo delivers fresh produce daily throughout the entire mid-Atlantic, and sources the very best ingredients from all over the country.
5040 West Chester Pike, Edgemont
Firepoint’s Indoor Space
Camino Commons Shopping Center, adjacent to the Edgemont Post Office
4.
Meaningful Décor From its modern industrial interior to the covered outdoor patio, Firepoint makes a state- ment from every angle. But if you look closely, there is more to the ambiance than just style. Paxos worked with the design team at Jeffrey Beers International out of NYC to turn Firepoint into an intentional showstopper. The standout glass vase display surrounding the restaurant’s private dining room, for example, is arranged to mimic the range of colors inside a flame. Wood elements throughout add a welcoming warmth to the modern interior. And the artfully-placed numbers on that wall-length mural? They are the restaurant’s latitude and longitude location!
Feeling armed with appreciation for the ins and outs of Firepoint? Take your new knowledge to their patio for happy hour, or bring the family to enjoy an outdoor weekend brunch. With so many fresh menu options to choose from, you just might find your new favorite seasonal dish, enhanced by signature service and that well-designed atmosphere. NS

We Did It!
Thanks to Readers and our Business Leader Heroes We did it! Our magazine readers, advertising Sponsors and our staff; we made it to this first anniversary edition of Newtown Square Friends & Neighbors. We surely have a hometown magazine everyone loves and wants to see grow in page count to add more features about Newtown Township families, local organizations, youth, seniors and Newtown Square history. Thank you for your hometown pride. It drove us towards Bringing People Together. While our staff pulls our new edition together each month, and readers like you offer nominations for our Family Feature and ideas for other new feature stories in our magazine each month, we all know by now that it’s our hometown Sponsors who make it possible for our hometown magazine to be mailed out each month to Newtown Square residents and available online at: www.NewtownSquareMag.com. As we head into our second year, I’m asking in earnest that everyone fully realize how we got here, and to act on knowing that the businesses seen advertising on the pages of Newtown Square Friends & Neighbors are not merely advertisers who wanted us to know about their business. It’s much bigger than that. The businesses you see promoted in our magazine are all forward-thinking, community-minded businesses led by business owners who honor us. And thankfully we’ve taken to honoring them for having dedicated a portion of their limited marketing budgets to bring us our monthly hometown magazine. Consider the names of our advertising Sponsors. Simply knowing their names tells us a lot about them, even before we read their ads in our magazine. It tells us that they consider Newtown Square to be very important to them. It tells us that
the residents of Newtown Township really matter to our magazine Sponsors who operate local business in our community. Our advertising Sponsors are clearly interested in us. They have invested in us and in our community. Their investment is not cluttering our mailboxes with junk mail, or used to buy online ads that annoy us. Instead, our Sponsors are investing in Bringing People Together in Newtown Square, by making it possible for us to have a hometown magazine mailed to you for free every month. And now we're better for it, after just one year, thanks to these hometown business leaders. While certainly not in service to us at the level of our hometown police, fire and EMTs who risk their safety for us, I have to suggest that over the past year our magazine’s advertising Sponsors have also become our hometown heroes for getting out in front with Newtown Square Friends & Neighbors by their investment in our hometown magazine. We need to regularly thank them too for their service to our community. It’s easy to do by calling them, emailing and most importantly, by choosing to shop local with them first when we can. Thank them for their service to our community by making our Newtown Square magazine possible. And please, always invite any other businesses you patronize to become a hometown Sponsor. As we enter our second year with hope to grow your hometown magazine in page count, and to mail Newtown Square Friends & Neighbors to even more homes each month, I need to seriously call on your help while also making a few reasonable requests. • Tell me what local businesses you patronize seem to be missing from our magazine? • Which Newtown Foot Doctor should step up to be our next hometown Sponsor? • Which local veterinarian do you recommend to be our Expert Contributor of feature articles? • What bank might invest in the residents of Newtown Square as we’ve invested in them?

Let’s invite every local business to the party that’s Bringing People Together through Newtown Square Friends & Neighbors magazine. Thanks to all our Sponsors, and all you readers who reward our Sponsors with your business in gratitude for their hometown sponsorship. There really is something wonderful happening after just one year, and the party is only getting started.

August marks one year since Newtown Square Friends & Neighbors magazine first reached the people of Newtown Township. It has been an incredible year serving as Content Coordinators for this magazine. There have been so many amazing families we’ve come to know, each month we feel closer to the community. Looking back, there are some truly inspiring and heartwarming stories we were lucky enough to bring to the people of Newtown Square this year. Our first family, Brad and Lauren Kohlhepp, shared the challenges of raising three young children and still trying to stay healthy. A hard task for anyone, but they made it possible by supporting their childrens’ activities and making the time for their own. September came along, and with it a new family. Brian and Joanie Quinn told us about their family, also passionate about sports. Brian works in the Athletic Development department at La Salle, Joanie played basketball at Boston College, her sister played at La Salle, and her brother is currently the head coach for the University of Hartford. The leaves began to change in October, and our experience with the community grew. Debbie and Scott Rivers shared the story of their family, how they met at Penn State and continue to foster a love for the university. Fingers crossed their children will follow in their footsteps! 2019 February

With November came the cold, but things were just heating up with the magazine. Scott and Mimi Avellino shared their story of perseverance through hardship, providing wonderful playgrounds all over the surrounding community in remembrance of their son Andrew. The holiday season began in December, and things were just as festive for Newtown Square Friends & Neighbors. Caroline and Steve Durkee met in a chance encounter at the wedding of a mutual friend, despite living in entirely different places in the country. They are now happily raising a wonderful family in Newtown Square. The January magazine rang in 2019 by featuring the Milligans. Marty and Collette Milligan have dedicated their personal time and professions to helping the community, volunteering to clean up Darby Creek and working with a company to promote the events and amenities of Delaware County. February brought Valentine’s Day, and with it a loving couple and their family. Tom and Shannon Locher are a fun-loving duo who are always eager to do something active, whether it’s

fishing at the shore or hosting friends in the winter. Thinking of the Lochers’ summer activities helped get us all through the mid-winter months. March was creeping closer to the warm weather, and the magazine was going strong. Nick and Dana Altobelli were an unexpected family feature, Nick being a quiet, reserved man who prefers the laid-back summers at Sea Isle City and Dana being an outgoing person who prefers adventures in the Poconos. The old saying about opposites attracting fit very well with this young, happy family. April brought the first hints of spring, and we were happy to speak with the Cunningham-Hills, a local family with global roots. Mark and Jackie Cunningham-Hill first met in England, and travelled the world together before finding themselves raising a family in Newtown Square. Their adventurous spirit lives on today with their own children. May was full of fresh flowers and a new warmth in the air. Michael and Christine McAleer told us how the travel bug took them from the east coast to San Diego, and continues to take them around the country with their children.

And just like that, another beautiful, if a little hot, June had set upon Newtown Square. Matt and Mary DeAngelo told us the story of their family, and how they chose Newtown Square to raise their two sons. In July we celebrated summer with fireworks and a line of cars down West Chester Pike headed to the beach. The Albertis have always loved the beach, currently spending the whole summer in Ocean City. Considering they are very active in the community and for their kids’ schools, these months are a very important time for them to unwind and relax. The families of Newtown Township have been very gracious to share their stories with their Newtown Square friends and neighbors through our hometown magazine. It’s no small thing to feature your family on the cover of a magazine, and to share the details of your life in a multi-page feature. But in doing so, we feel that the whole community has gotten to know each other better in the process. We look forward to sharing more stories in the coming year. Glass Additions That Bring Your Bathroom to Life
Redoing a bathroom can be an exciting part of making a house your own, but it can be hard to know what style and finishes would look best in a space to give it a modern or stylish feel. Whether you’re looking for a full renovation or just some touchups to update, there are some great ideas featuring glass that will really bring the room to life. An interesting option to upgrade a bathroom is to install a frameless shower enclosure. The style is timeless and adds an upscale look to the space. The glass shower enclosure usually features a large glass door and panel(s) with very little hardware. This chic design gives the illusion of a more spacious room. It looks

very sleek and there are many benefits to this type of shower enclosure. The glass holds up well over time in function as well as style. The glass enclosures have fewer grooves and crevices, which will save buildup from happening over time. It is also very easy to take care of and clean. Real glass will really shine for a long time and is easy to maintain. If you have a smaller bathroom, glass enclosures and mirrors can help to make the space seem larger. The transparent glass in the shower allows for the space to extend beyond a typical shower curtain or door. You can get creative with beautiful tiling to really upgrade the shower. Mirrors are also a great way to enhance the space without having to knock out a wall. Consider installing a mirror with integrated lights for a modern look. Large mirrors with a backsplash are also stylish and will help to open up a smaller room. There are many updates you could do to a bathroom in your home. A sleek glass enclosure and enhancing the space in the room will give a lasting boost to the value of your house. Contacting a professional to get a quote is the perfect first step in getting the bathroom you’ll love for years to come. NS
Requiem for the Joseph Lewis House
History Spotlight

Lewis House being demolished
Joseph Lewis House in happier days
300 years of history into a dumpster
the Township such an attractive place to live and work. So when you see our community leaders – our Township Manager, our Supervisors, let them know what you think about the continued loss of our historic homes and barns. Our neighbors in Marple lost their historic Pond House, on the 11th fairway of Paxon Hollow Golf Course, to a recent storm. We can sympathize as we have had our own losses. If you have driven Rt. 252 north and exited to follow Newtown Road, you used to see an old house on the right with a historic marker. The owner died in 2007; her heirs took no interest in the house and did no maintenance or repairs. These old stone homes did not have 21st-century mortars to hold the stones in place - but mud and clay and what was available in the 18th century.
For more history on Newtown Square, Delaware County, and membership information, please visit the web site of the Newtown Square Historical Society at www.HistoricNewtownSquare.org. NS
And so when the roof began to leak and give way, water entered the house and began the slow demolition of the structure – demolition by neglect. The estate finally sold the house in 2014, and the new owner took action to clean it out - it was the home of a hoarder and filled knee-deep with trash. He secured the property with the idea of eventually restoring it. But the damage that had occurred during the years of neglect had impaired the integrity of the stone walls. His engineer advised that he would need to largely re-build it, and that was cost prohibitive to him. And so on New Year’s Eve of 2015, the house built somewhere between 1730 and 1780 was reduced to rubble to be carted off to a landfill. Several generations of the Lewis family had lived at that house, and for close to 300 years, various other Newtown residents had taken good care of the house. But from 2007, we had to sit by and watch as the house was allowed to fall down. Unlike Marple, we have no preservation ordinance in Newtown. We had proposed a very good ordinance that would have given the Township the tools to address a situation like this. The ordinance was “tabled” by a 3 - 2 vote in 2003, and has never seen the light of day since. Until we have an ordinance that contains those powers, we will continue to lose our historic resources, the structures and landscapes of the past that made

Different Flooring for Different Needs
There are many things to consider when selecting flooring for your home or office. You should consider your needs, your personal taste, and the specific function of the room when deciding on the right flooring. Hard-surface flooring can include wood, vinyl, or some type of composite. These products look so amazing, you would think it is wood or ceramic tile. With better technology comes betterlooking and longer-lasting products. And with better sizing and easier installing, these products can be a great alternative to real wood or tile. Most products can even be installed over existing flooring, often resulting in reduced installation labor costs. You may also want to consider the desired function of your floor. If you will be moving heavy furniture across the floor, you may want a floor built for dent resistance. If your room has a large amount of natural light, especially something like a sunroom, look for floors that are made for heat resistance. And if you have pets running around the house, you may need scratch-resistant flooring.
A good waterproof option is luxury vinyl tile (LVT). LVT is manufactured in planks or larger tile form, as well as veneer hardwood planks. Almost all the vinyl products are waterproof, offering a wider variety of areas in which they can be used in your home. For instance, basements have a tendency of getting a wet spot or two, and vinyl may be the best option to last long and clean easily. LVT comes in many qualities, some with thicker vinyl. The thicker option feels more like real wood and generally tends to be better underfoot. The best dent-resistant or scratch-resistant flooring option is laminate, a composite type material with a dense backing and a layer on top with an extremely tough surface. If this room will have heavy traffic of either large machinery or pets and small children, laminate flooring may be the best option for you. With all hard-surface flooring, ware layer can be different, some with urethane and some with aluminum oxide finishes. Both finishes are excellent. The preferred ware layer is about 20 mil urethane finish and aluminum oxide has a very high density making it one of the best. There is also a wide variety of plank size, from 3" up to 9" in width and lengths up to 80" plus. For larger rooms and that larger plank look, that would be costprohibitive with real wood. With new products coming all the time, it can be a challenge to stay on top of them all. When looking for a new flooring for your home or business, make sure to learn about the different options and consider which floor is best for your needs. NS

10 Steps to A NEW YOU Step 1: Eat Right Forget the fad or trending diets. Simply follow the food pyramid eating the proper balance of Fat, Carbs and Protein. Select organic natural non-processed food whenever possible. Let’s face it, everyone is different and has different goals. What works for someone else may not work for you. You must balance your intake of the number of calories you need vs. the number of calories you burn.
Step 2: Sleep Generally speaking, most people need to get 8 hours of sleep. Go to bed at the same time and wake up at the same time every day. Just like eating, the amount of needed sleep varies from person to person. So, adjust your sleeping habits to fit your routine. It is important to note that you cannot catch up your sleep on weekends or downtime, so find a routine that makes you feel rested and stick to it.
Step 3: Breathe
Visit the Retro Fitness Preview Center today to see everything we have to offer. EXCLUSIVE OFFER: The first 250 members get VIP membership for LIFE! Rates starting at $19.99/month.
You should develop a habit of breathing exercises and/or meditation throughout the day. For logistics and consistency, it is especially helpful to do these types of exercises first thing in the morning and just before you go to bed. Sit or lie in a comfortable quiet place and breathe in through your nose and breathe out through your mouth. You can find plenty of breathing exercise routines on the Internet.
Step 4: Routine Establish a routine and stick to it. Most people fail because they give up. It takes less than 10 seconds to get distracted and pass on your routine and do something else. It is best to plan your week in advance and find a routine that works best for you.
Step 5: Goals Set fitness goals that are manageable and attainable. Setting unrealistic goals will only lead to failure. Likewise, setting goals too low will lead to boredom and lack of results. So, it is important to set your goal higher than you think you can achieve and you will be amazed at what you can accomplish. Work up to your ideal goal then surpass it.
Step 6: Reflection 4847 West Chester Pike, Newtown Square In the Marville Shopping Center at Edgmont Square

Be honest with yourself. Continually reflect back on the past week as you plan your upcoming routines. Do not dwell on the past or beat yourself up if you have not met your target goals for both diet and exercise. Life is never static. Refocus and move forward.
Step 7: Consistency In order to be successful, the best way is to establish a routine and stick to it. You will find that once you get started with your routine, it is easy to be consistent. Do not be discouraged if you miss a day or even a week. This is a lifelong commitment.
Step 8: Progress It is important to track your progress, whether your goal is weight loss/weight gain or building muscle/trimming down. One way is to keep a journal or a spiral notepad. Log your daily routine and track your progress. If you stick to it, you will be amazed when you look back on where you were a year ago or longer.
From the Air Answer (pg. 15): “A spire” at this site, seen from a great distance with a “silver lining” is the steeple of St. Anastasia Church at West Chester Pike in Newtown Square.
We’ve Got Special Gifts for All Occasions!
Step 9: Accountability Let’s face it, if you are a beginner or even a seasoned fitness fanatic it is always easier to have someone who will hold you accountable like a partner, friend or coach. Sharing your exercise and diet routines only makes it easier to accomplish your goals.
Fine Gifts & Collectibles
Step 10: Affirmations Practice affirmations every day as part of your routine. Typical affirmations include: I am strong, I am blessed, I am beautiful. You can do these as part of your meditation and breathing exercises, on a treadmill or bike. You can also find programs to follow on the Internet. Search “I AM” Affirmations. They can help you build your confidence and also change your life. These really work! NS

COMMON MYTHS about your on-site septic system
There are several common myths about your on-site septic system. By getting a better understanding of your system, you will be able to better maintain the system and detect issues over time.
Pumping your tank is an overall inspection of the system. Most homeowners think that pumping your septic tank will give you an overall view on how your on-site septic system is performing. This is not true. There are many components that make up a septic system and the most important part is the drain field. When you hire a company to come and pump your septic tank, they are not locating the drain field and checking effluent levels. The only way to check the whole system is to perform an inspection before the pumping. Once the inspection is performed, the septic company can better assist you in keeping your system running correctly.
My alarm is going off, so my tank must be full. If your septic system contains a pump tank, then you will have an alarm in your house to alert you when something is not right.
When you hear that alarm sound, some homeowners think it is telling them that it’s time to have your tank pumped. This is incorrect. When your alarm sounds, it can mean a myriad of things. Your pump could have shorted out from a storm; a float could have failed or fallen down into the tank; or the wiring could have been compromised. Whatever the case may be, you need to call your septic provider right away so that the problem can be resolved before sewage goes where it shouldn’t.
I don’t need to pump my septic tank if everything is flowing fine. Homeowners should generally have their tank pumped every one to three years, depending on the number of occupants. It is important to note that this timeframe should be shorter for those who have a lot of family members living at home. If you don’t pump your septic tank, then the solids and debris will build up and make their way into the drain field of the septic system, which can cause damage. Pumping your septic tank is the best thing you can do to maintain your system and it is much cheaper than a yearly sewer bill.
I have never had a problem, so my system is fine. Most homeowners don’t find out they have a problem until they put their house on the market and the buyers perform an inspection. Just because you don’t see any issues on the surface doesn’t mean there isn’t one below the surface. The best way to keep up with your septic system is to have it inspected every few years. By avoiding these misconceptions, you can stay prepared and detect issues as they come up. NS

Saving for College? Many of Newtown Square’s recent high school graduates are preparing to enter college in the fall. They are about to experience four years that many of us look back on as some of the best years of our lives. Unfortunately, it is going to cost them a lot more for the privilege. According to the National Center of Education Statistics, between 2005 – 06 and 2015 – 16, prices for undergraduate tuition, fees, room, and board at public institutions rose 34 percent, and prices at private nonprofit institutions rose 26 percent, after adjustment for inflation. One of the ways to save for college is with a 529 plan.
Newtown Square’s Resident Real Estate Expert
A 529 plan is a tax-advantaged account designed specifically for education savings. Withdrawals can be made for qualified education expenses that include tuition at elementary or secondary schools. Qualified expenses for college or graduate school include fees, books and room and board. Earnings in a 529 grow federal income tax deferred and withdrawals for qualified educational expenses are exempt from federal income taxes. 529 plans are particularly beneficial for Pennsylvania residents. The state allows you, as a resident filing married/joint, to deduct a maximum of $30,000 per beneficiary from your annual taxable income for state income tax purposes when you make a contribution to any 529 savings plan (including those offered by other states). Not all 529 plans offer the same investment choices and cost structure, but as a resident of Pennsylvania, you are free to enjoy the state tax benefit regardless of which plan you select. Owners of the 529 plan, typically parents or grandparents, make the investment and spending decisions. Owners also have the ability to change the beneficiary of the account.

Pros: • Pennsylvania residents receive a state income tax deduction. • Pennsylvania residents have flexibility to choose any 529 program and still receive full state tax benefit. • Earnings grow tax-free. • Flexibility to change the beneficiary annually. This allows unused funds to be used by siblings or other loved ones. The account can end up being used for generations. • Almost anyone can contribute to the plan.

Newtown Square Homeowner’s Solution For Sewer Tie-In Savings There are TWO OPTIONS for Sewer Tie-Ins with Township Approval 1. Traditional 4" Gravity System
2. Directional Drilling System
Digging Down to The Sewer Main
Underground Horizontal Drilling
Pros • A Gravity System with a clean out, relies on gradually sloping pipelines for downhill sewage flow. • The sewage flows away from the property and into a sewer main, offering peace of mind for many years. Con • Installing a Gravity System will significantly disturb the homeowner’s landscaping.
Pros • A Directional Drilling System is installed by tunneling underground horizontally, under gardens, driveways and other man-made obstacles. • Installation requires far less disturbance of landscaping. Cons • A Directional Drilling System requires a duplex grinder pump with battery backup (in the event of power loss). • Directional Drilling Systems require bi-annual servicing and owner monitoring.
