Why I Love Newtown Square, by Leonard Altieri
'Our Community' feature written by Leonard B. Altieri, III, Esq.
First and foremost, return on investment! Newtown Township continues to have the lowest tax rate of any municipality in the County with a full-time police force. Additionally, the Marple Newtown School District consistently performs well above the Commonwealth average on state exams in English & Language Arts; Math, and, Science. Even with that success, the average tax increase for the School District over the past five (5) years has only been .90%!
Another reason why I love Newtown Square: community. Newtown Square has always been and will remain being the best place to raise a family and grow old. Sure, we have the traditional organizations for children as any other municipality, such as the Newtown-Edgmont Little League, the Newtown Square Petticoat League, Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts. As well as service-oriented organizations: the Rotary Club of Newtown Square, Newtown Square Railroad Museum and Newtown Square Historical Society, to name a few.
But we also have the Newtown Square Business and Professional Association, an organization that is still dominated by local small businesses who line West Chester Pike, Saint Alban’s Circle and elsewhere in our community. In Newtown Square we have everyday residents who give back to their community on a daily basis. To use just one example, a group of citizens created Newtown Square in Bloom, a few years back. It is this organization that is responsible for having the hanging flower baskets line West Chester Pike in the spring and summer.
Even with the controlled growth the Township has experienced, Newtown Township has not lost its touch, or feel as a small, interwoven community. Yes, traffic has increased, but so has the number of individuals who continue to volunteer to coach our youth, serve our community on Township Boards/Commissions and look out for our neighbors.
For these reasons and more, that is why I love Newtown Square!
