Why I Love Newtown Square
by Paul Seligson
Relocating to the Philadelphia area from Miami 30 years ago, what my wife Suzanne and I desired most was a town with a sense of history and old-fashioned feel, located within easy reach of all conveniences. We envisioned a place with rolling hills, majestic trees, period houses, unique businesses, and kind neighbors. Newtown Square fit the bill then as it does now.
We thank our lucky stars to wake up surrounded by the sights and sounds of nature in our period mill cottage along the meandering Crum Creek. Never in our wildest dreams did we believe such a bucolic ideal could be found so close to a dynamic town. We enjoy almost-daily workouts at the Ellis Athletic Center. I’m in several tennis leagues, and I also enjoy being head tennis coach for DELCO Special Olympics.
Then, there are the people of Newtown Square: Suzanne and I cherish the warmth and generosity of residents across Newtown Square. I appreciate that the Town has accepted many of my and Newtown Square in Bloom committee ideas to help beautify and connect the community together. I’m on three committees in Newtown Square, and I feel an exhilaration from witnessing the community knitting together at events such as the Arbor Day tree planting, Tree Lighting at St. Albans Circle, and Concert in the Park at Drexel Lodge Park.
As Newtown Square continues to grow, I believe there are exciting opportunities to continue to enhance and strengthen the vibrancy of our town and community. I want to help be a part of the process. Currently, I am proposing the addition of tree-lined streets and landscaped medians to our downtown, to make visiting Newtown Square an inviting experience that will benefit all. This would complement the existing welllandscaped residential neighborhoods, and it would help draw attention to our local businesses.
