by Expert Contributor Dr. Heather Sefried, D.C, Owner of The Joint Chiropractic - Newtown Square
It’s highly likely you’ve heard one of the latest health buzzwords: “Autoimmune Disease.” Conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis, Crohn’s disease, lupus, multiple sclerosis, thyroid disease, and more are caused by an autoimmune reaction in the body. Occurrences are skyrocketing: It’s estimated that approximately 22 million people are affected by this classification of disease, and the numbers are escalating very quickly.
What Is Autoimmune Disease?
These conditions are diseases of very severe and chronic inflammation. When the body is inflamed over a long period of time, it sends off an immune response. If left go, it ends up attacking your body’s healthy tissues and cells. In the US, autoimmune disease has become an epidemic. Autoimmune disorders now fall in the top 10 leading causes of death in women, and costs around $120 billion/year in health care.
What Causes Autoimmune Disorders?
There is really no known explanation as to why patients have these diseases; however, possible explanations given include any bacteria or virus left untreated, chemical irritants, decreased exit pathways, environmental pollutants, or overuse of prescription drugs. Profound and debilitating fatigue is the most common complaint reported among individuals with autoimmune disease. People who suffer from these conditions are affected in almost any area of the body, including muscles, skin, glands, arteries, brain, nerves, lungs, the digestive tract, joints and eyes. Sometimes, there is swelling, redness and pain throughout the body, with increased inflammation in these areas. There can also be loss of function in some body parts as well.
How Can Chiropractic Help?
Chiropractic and autoimmune diseases are connected in that spinal misalignments can put pressure on your nervous system, and interfere with your brain's ability to tell your body to fight illness. Correcting such issues can improve your immune function. When a chiropractor locates, analyzes and corrects the misalignments that are putting pressure on your nerves, it allows your body to work at its highest potential, thus improving immune function. Also, a qualified chiropractor will be able to remove stiffness and pain you may be feeling in your joints as a result of your autoimmune disease.
