And to have elected officials whose leadership has made our community stronger. Newtown Square surely is a community of friends and neighbors: seniors, singles, moms and dads, kids and teachers and volunteers. I’ve never been as impressed with our hometown as now, when so much seemed so concerning without friends and neighbors.

The Magee Family: Proving “The Best Is Yet to Come!”

When we sat down to talk with the Magee Family, their individual and shared stories quickly made it clear that they’re the kind of Newtown Square neighbors who expect — and are doing everything they can — to prove that “the best is yet to come!”

Brendan Magee grew up in Havertown, and attended Monsignor Bonner High School and Temple University, where he enjoyed playing on both schools’ Tennis teams. After graduating from Temple, he worked for five years in the mid-’90s as a Financial Planner for a Main Line firm. He became frustrated with the substandard returns the firm’s mutual funds were producing, but what pushed Brendan over the edge was the lack of answers for why the so-called “experts” couldn’t maintain consistent performance. He got to the point where he had to find a better way to help people or find a new profession.

His prayers were answered and he found his calling in 1994, when he was fortunate enough to meet four Nobel Prize winners in the field of economics from The University of Chicago. They showed him that the world of investing worked very differently from what Wall Street tells the public. With that, he found the way to help people discover how markets really work and have the peace of mind they wanted to experience.

Now rewind a bit and meet Brendan’s wife Jennifer. She grew up in Sharon Hill. At Cardinal O’Hara High School, her experience on the track team developed her stamina and fitness, and prepared her to have a great experience as a member of the crew 6

team when she attended Washington College on Maryland’s Eastern shore. After Jennifer graduated in 1995 with a B.A. in English and a minor in History, she stayed and coached crew there for a couple years while she worked toward her Master’s in English, with a plan to someday be an English professor and teach Shakespeare. But after Jennifer discovered “a whole new world” while working at a camp for Catholic and Protestant children in northern Ireland and then also worked for a few years in the DC area, she got excited about and committed to “teaching peace.”

While Jennifer was working on her Ph.D. in Conflict Analysis and Resolution at George Mason University, she lived at home with her parents in Aldan. During a 2006 Christmas party they hosted for all their relatives, Jennifer’s aunt played matchmaker, by calling and inviting Brendan to “come to this party and meet this girl!” Brendan accepted that invitation, and he and Jennifer met and chatted that night. Two weeks later, Brendan called Jennifer and asked her out. As they planned their first date, Jennifer suggested that they go together to 5pm Saturday Mass and then go out for dinner. That’s the moment Brendan knew that Jennifer was very special and the woman he wanted to marry. When they got engaged six months later, Jennifer was teaching an Introduction to Peace and Conflict Studies course at Swarthmore College. They got married in October 2007, and waited until the following summer to honeymoon in the Grand Cayman Islands.

After their honeymoon, Jennifer and Brendan purchased her parents’ home in Aldan because her dad was ill and her parents were downsizing and moving to Newtown Square. By 2015, The Magees, now a family of four, needed more space, so they moved to their Newtown Square home in Green Country Village, which they love. They feel blessed to have had some quality time with Jennifer’s dad before he passed away. The Magees are also grateful to live in the same neighborhood as Jennifer’s mom.

“This is a community of people who look after each other and are very welcoming!” said Brendan. He and Jennifer also appreciate how much the Marple Newtown School District has helped them as parents by providing such a great educational and social experience for their sons Liam and Owen.

Brendan and Jennifer’s older son, Liam, just turned 11. One of his favorite hobbies is making Origami finger puppets. Math is his favorite subject this year as a 5th-grader at Culbertson Elementary.

This winter, Liam enjoyed playing on a Marple Newtown Recreation Youth Basketball team, which his dad Brendan coached. “Liam has a wonderful personality and is a lot of fun to be around!”

Brendan said. “He makes friends very easily, and is especially conscious of other people’s feelings.” Liam thinks he might like to work someday as a blogger and a YouTuber who creates gaming videos.

Younger son Owen is a 3rd-grader at Culbertson. His favorite school subject is also Math and his favorite TV show is Planet Earth. This well-rounded 9-year-old likes to bowl, golf, practice

jiu-jitsu, and play the recorder and ukulele. He’s looking forward to his third year playing baseball on a NELL team. Owen used to say he’d be a pilot someday, but his curiosity and interest in the world now has him planning to be a “stay-at-home scientist,” so he can be home for his kids and work on experiments in his basement! “Owen has a caring, tender heart,” Jennifer said fondly.

“Family is Owen’s top priority, especially looking out for his brother.” “Owen’s got a thousand faces he uses, to make you laugh,” added Brendan, “and to let you know how much he loves you.”

Resident Feature facilitates teaching and research that connects the campus, community, and curriculum in ways that can address significant civic and social problems. Jennifer loves being part of a talented and motivated team that helps students, staff, faculty and community partners identify opportunities to co-create knowledge, enhance collective social capital, and make forward progress for the common good.

Brendan and Jennifer serve their local communities in several ways. Brendan has volunteered as a NELL Coach, and is currently a Lector at their church, St. Anastasia. Jennifer is a volunteer with Compass, a pro bono strategic consulting firm. In the greater Philadelphia region (including Delaware County), Compass strengthens the capacity, effectiveness and sustainability of local nonprofits.

Last year, when a Labradoodle joined the Magee Family, Liam named their puppy Toby. Now a full-grown all-around good dog, Toby’s favorite things to do are run all around Sawmill Park and swim in the creek there.

Since 1998, Brendan has owned and run his own business, Inevitable Wealth Coaching (www.CoachGee.com). As an Investor Coach, Brendan lives to help families fulfill their American Dream. He does that by empowering families to discover their true purpose for life and money, and then align their investing with those two purposes. He describes his coaching as a process where people transform their experience of money and investing and become free to create the life they always wanted for themselves and their family. Brendan has just published his second book, The Investor’s Bill of Rights: Owning Your American Dream, which he hopes investors will use to tip the odds of success in their favor. A five-year Magee family tradition is summer vacations in Avalon and enjoying the delicious food at the nearby Crab House restaurant at Two Mile Landing in Wildwood. History Spotlight Widening the Pike at Boot Rd, 1954 (the trolley tracks are gone)

and in 1956, the section out to Boot Road was opened. The widened Pike was finally extended to West Chester by the end of 1961.

Lloyd Roach grew up on nearby Boot Road. He recently shared with us some slides his family took of the pike-widening work as it stood in 1955 or so. Step back in time and enjoy these scenes, which have not yet been seen outside of the Roach family!

Toll Booth on West Chester Turnpike

The West Chester Pike familiar to us was the child of an existing road out from Market Street in Philadelphia, and the need, in 1789, to have a good road for continuing the journey to the new county seat of Chester County. Back then, the eastern townships were split off to form Delaware County, which got to keep the county seat – the city of Chester. Chester County located its new county seat at the small crossroads village of Turks Head. The city fathers decided that naming the town for a swinging sign over the local tavern was perhaps not dignified enough for a county seat, and so they changed the name to West Chester. Otherwise we would be driving out there on Turks Head Pike!

In 1793, the extension from Newtown Square was laid out, a narrow dirt road winding over the hilly Chester County countryside. The road was upgraded in 1848, to a toll turnpike, and a plank road was built from Philadelphia as far as Newtown Square, The Pike circa 1920, looking but the rest of the journey was still west (the trolley is heading a rutted and muddy narrow road. toward West Chester) Through much of the 19th century, a stagecoach ran from West Philadelphia to West Chester, with a regular stop at Newtown Square. In the 1890s, the route west became easier for passengers, as a trolley line ran out from 69th Street all the way to West Chester, on the south side of the roadway. In 1918, the State of Pennsylvania took control of the road, and discontinued the hated tolls and toll booths. The trolleys continued to run until the early 1950s, when service was cut back as portions of the road were widened from 2 to 4 lanes, using the trolley’s right of way for the 2 new automobile lanes.

We’re pleased to announce that the April Sproul Lanes Student of the Month is St. Joe’s Prep Sophomore Joe McGinnis! To celebrate this recognition, Joe received a Certificate of Achievement and a gift certificate for a “Pizza Bowl” party from Sproul Lanes, our Sponsor of this award program.

The same day Joe learned he was selected as this month’s winner, he also learned he had made his school’s Varsity Baseball team!

Joe started playing baseball at age 6, with Marple Township Little League (MTLL). He plays outfield and he loves team sports. Joe also enjoys playing basketball and volleyball with St. Anastasia’s CYO recreation sports program. His teammates there also happen to be a great group of local friends with whom Joe maintains strong ties.

Five years ago, Joe learned to play the guitar. Since then, he’s written quite a few songs, which he and another good friend have performed (along with some cover songs) for some enthusiastic local audiences. Joe is also involved in several school-sponsored Girard Avenue neighborhood service projects. He also frequently and eagerly offers to help his own local neighbors, many of whom are senior citizens, with snow removal and other labor-related activities.

This fine young man is also an honor student who consistently demonstrates academic excellence. Joe hasn’t yet decided what he may study after high school, but he sees himself at a large university like Penn State or the University of Maryland.

The second most important way to care for your carpets is to get them CLEANED. Carpet shampooers and steam-cleaning machines that are affordable for consumers do an OK job. But they’re not designed to literally get to “the bottom of things.”

They don’t have the power to remove all dirt and restore your carpets to like-new condition. To protect your investment and help your carpeting look better longer, cleaning by a trained professional is not only recommended, it’s necessary.

Most carpeting comes with a manufacturer’s warranty. The warranty will not be honored if you can’t prove you’ve followed all the requirements, which are typically that every 12 to 18 months, you’ve had the carpeting professionally cleaned by a certified specialist and that you have the receipts to prove such regular deep cleaning was done.

The other more immediate and pleasing benefit of having your carpets professionally cleaned is that they’ll look brighter and feel and smell cleaner. Everything looks and feels new in Springtime. While you’re freshening up the rest of your house inside and out and letting spring breezes in your open windows, remember to fully remove winter dirt from your carpets so they can look refreshed and beautiful for another year.

TJ had met his future wife, Samantha (“Sam”), while they were both attending WCU. Sam grew up in Wyckoff, NJ, and had chosen WCU to prepare for a teaching career. Shortly after they got engaged, a horrible foot injury forced TJ to need someone he could trust to help with his business. Sam left teaching, and started handling the office duties. TJ and Sam got married in 2013, and have been parents since 2015. They’re now a family of 5 with 3 kids under age 6!

: e c n a D Where Science Meets Art Take a peek into any dance studio’s reference library and you’ll surely find books on training, technique and performance. But take a deeper look, and you’ll find the not-so-obvious neuroscience articles, physics studies and perhaps even a plastic skeleton or two.

There’s no argument that dance benefits the brain just as much as the body, but did you know that its benefits go well beyond the obvious release of endorphins and cognitive connections?

There has been a recent surge in research into how dancers’ brains process information and how the study of anatomy and physics can lead to elevated levels of performance, reduce injuries and create a state of superfluidity where the cerebrum and cerebellum are beautifully synchronized.

Recent studies by prominent universities have shown definitive proof that dancers use multiple areas of their brain. One area is the part of our brain that controls our ability to move. Another part of our brain that gets involved is where our ability to imagine movement qualities is located. Those two parts of a trained dancer’s brain work together, to make the higher-level decisions about how they will intentionally express emotion as they execute each movement. Such decisions engage a dancer’s whole brain, as they simultaneously think about the sequence, timing, focus and qualities of lightness before making each next movement.

Beyond the brain, it makes sense to educate dancers on their physical anatomy and how to visualize their muscles, joints and bones working to maintain balance, extend their arms and legs and lift themselves higher than ever before. The Franklin Method®, created by Eric N. Franklin, is a growing study that uses dynamic neuro-cognitive imagery, anatomical embodiment and educational skills to create lasting positive change in dancers’ bodies and minds.

Another effective method of physical and cognitive dance training comes from encouraging a heightened state of visualization through what is called “marking” — going through the motions of a dance in a minimized way. While this may simply be seen as a method of saving energy, this mental training actually improves overall performance because it allows dancers to commit specific movements, sequences and timing to memory before physically dancing “full out.”

For the vast majority of homeowners, it’s easy to put gas fireplaces on the back burner with all the outdoor activities lined up: the smell of fresh grass as baseball’s opening day gets underway and the barbecue cookouts there for the taking. This is because many homeowners don’t think about service or maintenance until their gas fireplace is not functioning properly. If a gas fireplace isn’t properly maintained, malfunctions often seem to happen in the middle of winter.

Preventative maintenance is the best type of maintenance, and homeowners with gas fireplaces can avoid waiting several weeks for service during winter months by being proactive and having their fireplace cleaned and serviced in the spring

or summer. A specialist will thoroughly clean the gas fireplace and return the logs to their optimal positions and alignment, to ensure the gas fireplace operates as effectively as it should.

How often a gas fireplace should be serviced depends on the manufacturer and model, as well as the type of gas fireplace.

So, enjoy the warm weather and sunny days ahead, but don’t completely forget about your gas fireplace. Getting it serviced prior to the fall and winter months will help you avoid a potential operation lapse or a long and frustrating wait for service.

Bunny Cake

This whimsical cake is perfect for any Easter meal or spring gathering. It has been a tradition in my family for over 25 years.

Here’s a tip from me to you: make sure the cake is fully cooled before you start decorating. Otherwise your bunny may crumble!

Ingredients:

• 1 box of your favorite cake mix • Large oval cake platter or cardboard square covered with foil • 1 stick unsalted butter, softened

Directions:

Preheat the oven to 350°. Make the cake batter according to package instructions. Pour the batter into two 8-inch round pans and bake (according to package instructions). Allow to cool.

Make the cream cheese frosting by beating together the butter and cream cheese with a hand mixer or stand mixer until light and fluffy. Slowly add in the sugar, beating with each addition.

Last, add the vanilla.

Start with one round cake. Cut it in half down the center (you should end up with two half-moon shapes). Use some frosting to put them together, flat side down. Then, cut a notch out of the cake about a third of the way from the end to make the bunny’s head. Use half of that wedge for the tail by attaching it to the opposite end (from which it was taken) with toothpicks.

Of course, you should eat the other half!

• 8 oz. cream cheese (room temperature) • 4 cups powdered sugar • 1 Tbsp. vanilla extract • 4 cups shredded sweetened coconut • White and pink paper • Glue stick (optional) • Jellybeans • Green food coloring • Colorful marshmallow chicks (optional)

Frost the cake with the cream cheese frosting so it’s completely covered and none of the cake is showing. Pat one cup of coconut flakes into the frosting to make the bunny’s fur.

Cut bunny ears from your paper (I like using slightly larger pieces for the white part and gluing smaller pieces of pink paper on top) and insert them into the bunny’s head. You may wish to wrap the ends that go into the cake with plastic wrap or foil if you plan to eat the cake. Make the bunny’s face using jellybeans.

To make the grass, add food coloring and the remaining coconut to a zip-top bag and shake to evenly distribute the color. Place it all around your bunny and decorate with additional jellybeans and marshmallow chicks, if desired.

Repeat the process for the second cake.

Happy 50th Anniversary, Newtown Square Petticoat League!

Newtown Square Police Sgt. Stanly Short, founding member of the Newtown Square Petticoat League, in 1970

In 1970, when Newtown Township Police Sgt. Stanly Short and Officer Steve Copeland were having lunch with friend Milt Finkle at a local deli, they got talking about the lack of recreational programs and facilities for young girls in the community. That conversation led those dads to take action and form the Newtown Square Petticoat League (NSPL; www.NSPLSoftball.com), a softball organization for girls ages 4-18.

This year marks NSPL’s 50th Anniversary! Starting with 180 girls in 1970 to 478 girls today, NSPL continues to thrive with the help of volunteer Board Members and Coaches and ongoing community support.

Sgt. Short’s daughter Jody (now Jody Short McQuaid) and her two sisters played in NSPL in the mid-’70s. “My father, Stan Short, and all the coaches taught us how to play as a team, built our confidence and most importantly always told us to go out and enjoy ourselves,” she recalled fondly. “I wasn’t the best player.

My sisters Debby and Karen were good. Most times, I would sit on the bench with our dad and help him with the scorebook. He always made me feel like I was just as important to the team as the girls out on the field.”

On NSPL’s Troop Field, which was originally a cow pasture on Bishop Hollow Road, championships were won, lifelong friendships made, and careers began. Wendy Smith, NSPL player 1970 - 1979, Coach, and NSPL Board President 1985 -1991, also has fond memories that include working together by hand, to make the fields playable. “When I think about the moments and the time that I spent at NSPL, Opening Day was always

The league provided Wendy an opportunity to experience sports with her mom, and also helped pave her way for a career as a Coach and Educator.

When asked how NSPL impacted her life, Julie said, “I’ve always hoped to be a positive influence on young girls who are learning to play softball, like so many NSPL coaches were for me.

I’m extremely grateful for the opportunity to fulfill that dream and pass along the knowledge I learned at NSPL.” Julie’s most memorable NSPL moment was when, at age 11, she pitched in the 2001 Championship game with her team, Wozniak Landscaping. They came together and won despite a nail-biting last

inning! There’s more than one reason that game is such a cherished memory for Julie: Her dad was the team Coach.

1979 - 1991 NSPL player and current Board Member Heather Dwyer vividly remembers how her coaches volunteered their time to teach the girls how to play. They taught not only softball rules and mechanics; they also taught sportsmanship and a positive work ethic, which helped Heather on her high school and college softball teams, and as a private-lessons teacher.

In the early ’80s, Al Bramley and some other Board Members started NSPL’s snack bar. Today, Al’s daughter, Nadine (Bramley) Scali, who played for NSPL for 12 years, helps run the snack bar while watching her own two daughters enjoy NSPL. Nadine remembers teams using trees as backstops and sitting on green wooden benches because there were no dugouts. But Nadine’s most cherished memories are the many hours she and her dad spent together, talking about softball.

The flu is a respiratory system infection that affects many people each year in the United States and around the world. Anyone can get the flu virus, which can cause mild to severe symptoms.

Symptoms of the flu include fever, body aches, runny nose, coughing, sore throat, and fatigue.

There are many natural things we can do to help reduce our chances of contracting the flu: Wash your hands, disinfect surfaces, avoid touching your face, build up your immune system with vitamins especially vitamin D, eat healthy, increase your veggies, exercise and get adjusted by your chiropractor!

When most people think of chiropractic care, their first thought is headaches, back pain and spinal adjustments. There are, however, a number of additional benefits to chiropractic care, including benefits to the immune system. A study done after the 1918 flu pandemic showed a .25% death rate for flu victims who had been under chiropractic care, significantly less than the 5% death rate of flu victims who had not been receiving chiropractic care.

How Chiropractic Boosts Immunity There’s a clear explanation for why chiropractic care can improve the function of the nervous system and body functions. The nervous system and immune system are hardwired to work together, to create optimal responses for the body and interact with each other more often than you may think. The nervous system relays information to the brain from the entire body and

can directly influence receptors in the immune system. The brain has the ability to use nerve cells to communicate directly with the immune system and trigger an immune response. The immune system can send signals to the brain, to let it know of any foreign and unwanted antigens. The brain can then tell the nervous system to react.

Marple Newtown Amateur Radio Club

Connecting People Over the Airwaves

World Amateur Radio Day is April 18, so this month, we’re celebrating the purpose and activities of the Marple Newtown Amateur Radio Club (MNARC). Their Field Day event at Drexel Park Lodge (June 27 & 28 ) is an annual emergency preparedness exercise for U.S. and Canadian Amateur Radio enthusiasts whose goal during the event is to improve on how quickly they can set up a reliable radio station in improvised conditions, without electricity or buildings, so they’re ready to serve in an emergency.

In the United States, the FCC allocates and monitors use of all radio airwaves. Since 1940, the FCC has considered Amateur Radio (also known as ham radio) a valuable noncommercial volunteer emergency communications service and public resource. Ham radio station operators may use FCC-approved Amateur Radio frequencies for personal education, enjoyment and satisfaction, emergency preparedness drills, and to improve electronics and communication techniques.

In the early ’90s, a group of local ham radio hobbyists formed MNARC. The club has 80 members, and the club’s ham radio station call letters are K3MN. Meetings are open to the public, and are held at 7pm on the first Thursday of each month (except

July and August) at the Newtown Township Library on Bishop Hollow Rd. MNARC connects people of all ages who are interested in staying current regarding what’s new in the science and art of Amateur Radio. Use of the Amateur Radio airwaves requires a license granted by the FCC, and the club’s classes help folks learn what they need to know to earn an entry-level license or a more privileged advanced-level license.

At MNARC meetings, hobbyists or industry professionals give presentations on topics such as electronic tinkering, equipment designs to improve transmitters and receivers, and how to troubleshoot and resolve radio signal interference problems. Some meetings offer experiential presentations by members who share what they did and learned when they took their radio equipment to a remote location. Between meetings, optional time-limited contests and personal achievement awards are offered, such as connecting with a certain number of ham radio stations in 1 state, all 50 U.S. states or in 100 or more countries globally. Some members focus on educating youth or the local community about ham radio as a hobby.

Amateur Radio in the U.S. Founded in 1914, its original purpose was to link ham radio station operators who could transmit Morse code messages between stations that were too far apart to directly connect with each other. The ARRL has 160,000+ members, and its mission is to support the awareness and growth of Amateur Radio in the U.S. and worldwide. The ARRL also advocates for meaningful ongoing access to government resources and Amateur Radio spectrum airwaves.

While some ham radio enthusiasts continue to keep the Morse code tradition alive, today’s hams are more likely to use digital signal processing (DSP) and hybrid technologies to transmit voice and data messages digitally over the airwaves and also over land networks such as the Internet.

April 18 is annual World Amateur Radio Day to commemorate when the International Amateur Radio Union ( IARU) was founded in 1925. Each century and decade has its visionaries and inventors. Serving the community while also mastering this fascinating technology is a uniquely valuable combination. Perhaps the Marple Newtown Amateur Radio Club is incubating the scientists and engineers who will make the next great leaps in communications, radio-controlled vehicles or interstellar exploration!

A Quiet Space This basement waterproofing “case study,” “The Lesson of the Forgotten Home Office,” tells how a large, damp, musty and unused basement was quickly transformed into a new moisture- and mold-controlled quiet home office.

Twenty years ago, a homeowner built a 6,000-square-foot raised ranch home with many amenities on 5+ acres. The homeowner, a Senior Sales Executive, stayed home two days each week, to make sales calls by phone. But he was frustrated because nowhere in that massive house was there a quiet and private room with no distractions.

For five years, he had been sneaking down to work in his home’s empty 2,000-square-foot (!) basement. There was nothing down there except for a small area rug, a folding card table with a desk lamp on it, a desk phone, a milk crate for his files, and one very old leather chair. That was all he needed for a busy day’s work.

The basement makeover project was simple: Give this man a dry and sanitary space where he wouldn’t be distracted from the weekly lawn crew, pool cleaners, two overly friendly Golden Retrievers who loved to run around the house, college sons home for the summers, and his wife’s friends who frequently came over for coffee and conversation. Amazingly, when he was at his card table/desk, quietly working in his basement “retreat,” everyone assumed he wasn’t home or that he was busy somewhere in the house. The basement had damp walls, a musty smell and a noisy dehumidifier. The proposed and accepted solution was twofold. On the house exterior, surface drains were added, the foundation was regraded, and rain gutters were cleaned and adjusted for proper and easy maintenance. On the inside, the basement walls and floor were washed down into the existing sump pump. Mold treatment and waterproof coatings were applied to the walls; the floor was covered with high-gloss paint; and some new window vents were installed. This makeover took less than two weeks. The basement was now just as empty as before, but it was well lit and naturally ventilated. No more musty smell, and no need for a dehumidifier.

Many homeowners are pleasantly surprised to learn that interior french drains are not required to turn their damp, musty unfinished basement into dry storage space or a place to exercise, listen to music, watch a movie, work on some home projects, or, as in this case study, have a simple and quiet home office whose only distraction is perhaps a little tweeting by the birds outside.
