Have You Found the Right Personal Trainer Have you Found the Right Personal Trainer? There are many different characteristics of personal trainers in the fitness industry, from trainers who act like drill sergeants to those who act like educators or motivators, etc. Trainers have many different personalities and specialties, but the question comes down to: Which one is right for you? Shopping for a trainer should be the same as buying a car or a house. Research should be done before investing not only your time but also your money. Having a trainer can help guide you toward a goal. Whether your goal is personal, medical, or performance improvement, investing in a trainer to help you is important for your wellness and achieving your goals. Here are some things to look for when searching for the right personal trainer.

1. EXPERIENCE: Understanding that everyone has to start somewhere, finding someone who has a long tenure at a club is a great tool to use. Also, you can ask for the trainer’s qualifications because trainers can have a college degree in exercise science or physical education, but also top-tier certifications like ACSM, NCSA, or NASM.

2. PLAYING THE PART: Not all trainers need to look like a Greek god or a marathon runner, but they should look like they work out. The idea is trainers are not only expressing

expertise from what they’ve studied, but also the results of their own training.

3. KNOWLEDGE: In-depth knowledge and understanding about how the human body moves and how exercise affects the human body is a great indicator that you have found a smart trainer. The trainer should know how to work with all different types of people and also understand human anatomy, to help provide the best service for each client.

4. RELATIONSHIP: Your very first interaction with a trainer can indicate if you’ve found the right one. Like the old saying goes “First impressions are lasting impressions.” This is like a first date. Both trainer and client have to understand how each other will work with one another. You must feel confident that the trainer you choose can help you stay committed to achieving each next goal. Chemistry between each party is more than important; it’s mission-critical. By following these tips, you have a better chance of knowing which trainers would and would not be right for you. Before investing your money in a trainer, see if your gym offers a complementary fitness assessment. Such an assessment can be used to set a baseline for a new client, but it’s also an opportunity for you to get to work with — and discover — the best trainer for you. NS
