Home (Cooking) for the Holidays

by Expert Contributor Christopher Heath, Corporate Chef at Firepoint Grill

This holiday season will be undeniably different than past years. With pandemic precautions top of mind, a lot of the group gatherings that typically bring joy to our holidays will not be possible this year. But just because you may not be able to share a meal in the typical way, that doesn’t mean you can’t share a meal at all. A little planning and creativity can help bring your loved ones “together” over a holiday dinner.

Plan a Recipe Exchange

Are you the one friend who always brings your signature meatballs to a holiday party? You might not be attending the party this year, but you can share your secrets so friends can recreate the party flavors at home. Ask interested friends to share their favorite holiday recipes in an email exchange, or create a shared recipes document online for family members to add to. Get cooking, and remember to later share with the group how much you enjoyed making their recipes!

Special Delivery

You might not be able to indulge your inner party host this year, but you can still spread some cheer from doorstep to doorstep. Surprise friends and family by dropping off a tin of homemade cookies, or send them a box of postal-friendly desserts in the mail. Losing yourself in an afternoon of baking will bring cheer to your own kitchen, too.

Ingredient Challenge

Feeling uninspired to cook for a smaller-than-normal group? Get your would-be holiday dinner guests into a text chain and ask each person to choose a random ingredient for you to cook with. See how you can creatively combine the ingredients, or choose one to spotlight every night for dinner one week.

Need a Gift Idea?

Gift cards might seem like an easy present, but this year, they are more relevant than ever. A gift card to a local market or restaurant can make dinner at home feel more like a treat than a challenge. Gift the gift of a nice night out…to enjoy right at home.

However you are celebrating the holidays this year, you can still create happy memories by staying safely connected, and enjoying some hearty holiday meals.
