This month, I am happy to share news of an acquaintance of mine, nationally respected bestselling author, Patrick Lencioni, has kindly agreed to write a feature article for our Newtown Square Friends & Neighbors magazine in print and online at www.NewtownSquareMag.com. How cool is that! Patrick Lencioni is the founder of The Table Group, a firm dedicated to providing organizations with ideas, products and services that improve teamwork, clarity and employee engagement. Patrick’s trademark expertise and insights in the personal development and growth arena are world-renowned. And I can assure you, Patrick Lencioni’s sense of humor and relatable storytelling will resonate with you. It did with me again when I read “Imagine a Community Without Frantic Families,” which Patrick wrote for us as you’ll see on page 18. Thank you, Patrick! You’re the first bestselling author with over six million books sold to share your wit and wisdom with us in our magazine. I know our Newtown Square community will enjoy your insights. I know you’ll enjoy Patrick’s article, and I am sure you will enjoy reading this first issue of Newtown Square Friends & Neighbors of 2021. But before we fully let 2020 slip into history, I have to share how proud I am of our hometown. Not just our hometown heroes, first responders and front-line workers who have served us so well during this pandemic, and not just our hometown Sponsors who kept our magazine coming into your homes each month through their loyal advertising support. I’m also proud of you, our Readers. Thank you for all your kind words and emails about our hometown magazine during 2020. It kept us going through hard times and got us through to this new year, which I honestly believe will be a new year of resolve and refreshment like none other. Start that refreshment now. Take in a little Newtown Square hometown pride with some friends and neighbors found on the pages of our first issue of 2021, which I know you’ll enjoy.
Bob Blaisse Publisher Dear Residents, Happy New Year! Here’s hoping your holiday season was filled with much warmth and joy, and that the months to come will be the start of bringing us all back together as we are meant to be. January traditionally has us setting goals and looking ahead, so we asked a few local residents and business owners to share their hopes and vision for 2021. We are also pleased to introduce you to the Kim Family. They fully embrace values, family and hard work, all mixed with fun! Our Business Profile features Martella Electric, a family owned and operated team of electricians who’ve been reliably and proudly serving our area since 1955. We are looking for more Newtown Square families, individuals and organizations to feature in our magazine. If you’d like to nominate someone, please email me at STurnerHilliard@BestVersionMedia.com.

Resident Feature
The Kim Family:
The Perfect Blend of Family, Values and Fun! by Sheila Turner-Hilliard Photos by Sierra Clark Photography www.SierraClarkPhoto.com
We would like to thank
for sponsoring this month’s Resident Feature.
We are delighted to introduce you to The Kim Family, whose strong commitment to family, values, and heritage mixed with fun is the foundation for their success. Philip and Claire Kim moved to Newtown Square 15 years ago. Their paths first crossed in Philadelphia while they were both working in the medical field. After getting married, they decided to start searching for their forever home. Knowing they wanted to raise their children in the suburbs, Claire and Philip chose Newtown Square for its beauty, mature trees, friendly faces and quality educational opportunities. They’re pleased to share their story here because they love that the Newtown Square Friends & Neighbors magazine celebrates families in our closeknit community, and flipping through the pages reminds them of the many activities, restaurants and walking paths Newtown Square has to offer. Philip grew up in Potomac, Maryland, after his parents emigrated from South Korea. For high school, he attended Landon School for Boys, and then graduated from Vassar College with a major in Cognitive Science. He subsequently did a neuroscientist research fellowship at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) before entering Loyola University’s medical school, where he developed an interest in anesthesiology and pain medicine. This led him to the University of Pennsylvania, where he stayed on staff as an Assistant Professor after his residency and fellowship. 6

In 2002, Dr. Kim entered private practice with a focus on pain medicine primarily on interventional spine and pain techniques. He is the CEO and the founding member of the Center for Interventional Pain and Spine. He also serves on the editorial staff for numerous medical journals including Regional Anesthesiology and Neuromodulation. He has received a Master of Science degree in Functional and Metabolic Medicine, and is board-certified in Integrative Medicine. Dr. Kim, who is recognized for his specialty in neuromodulation therapies and intrathecal drug delivery systems, is passionate about increasing the overall quality of life for his patients, many of whom come to him when all other pain management methods have been exhausted. His passion for helping others beyond their physical ailments stems from watching his father, a gastroenterologist in private practice for over 50 years. “I grew up watching my father treat his patients with genuine care and concern,” he said. “He always stressed to me how important it was to give his patients his time and sincere attention.” Dr. Kim believes that while relieving his patients’ pain is important, equally so is helping them heal from the physical and mental stress brought on by their condition. He passionately believes that to effectively lend his advice, he must not only educate, he must also lead by example. This comprehensive approach has earned him numerous awards and praise from his patients and their families.
Although Philip often finds himself Alex Kim, recent Temple University Graduate in the spotlight for his accomplishments, he wants to give credit where the real credit is due. “My wife Claire is the one who deserves the accolades,” he said. “She’s the one who allows me to do what I need to do to succeed.” Claire grew up in the Lehigh Valley, with her parents and one sister. When she attended Lehighton Area High School, she was a majorette captain and was also on the debate team. Claire later attended La Salle University, earning her BSN with a focus in cardiac surgery. While she enjoyed and excelled at her work as an open-heart surgery nurse, she now serves as the Kim household’s CEO, a role that Philip feels Keira and Grant Kim isn’t as appreciated and celebrated as it should be these days. “Too much value is placed on the one working outside the home, when in reality, having a loving and meals. “I also love to bake,” she said. “A few of my favorites are banana bread, flourless chocolate cake and brownies with a supportive family is often the secret to success,” he says. little bit of spinach mixed in.” Don’t worry, Claire, we won’t tell In addition to managing a busy household, Claire is a certified the kids about the spinach! She credits her cooking and baking yoga instructor and enjoys working out and cooking healthy Continued on page 8

Resident Feature Keira is a quiet yet competitive 13-year-old who loves real estate, interior design, dogs and the beach. Her parents say she has an inner strength that is quite remarkable. In fact, she took them all by surprise two years ago by being the first in line to jump off a 50-foot cliff into the water while on an excursion in Mexico! Their son Grant is 11 years old and loves all things sports, especially running, soccer and karate. And although he has an easy-going and empathetic personality, Grant thrives on competition, and recently earned his black belt in karate. Last but certainly not least is the Kim Family’s loyal friend and protector, Leah, an 8-year-old chocolate lab who is adored by all.

abilities to her wonderful parents. “Growing up, we always had healthy home-cooked meals, and their continued love, support and positive influence continues to be present in our lives. They are proud grandparents who not only love spending time with the kids, they tell the best bedtime stories!” Claire and Philip have three children: Alex, Keira and Grant. Alex is a recent graduate of Temple University who majored in Graphic Design. Although he missed out on a traditional graduation last spring due to COVID-19, Alex now lives with some friends and works in Philadelphia. In his spare time, he enjoys running, fencing and advocating for causes he finds meaningful.
The Kim's commitment to each other and their family is admirable and inspiring. While Claire and Philip both respect and appreciate the daily work they each put into the household, they make sure they prioritize family fun and fitness! On weekends, you’ll find the Kims taking walks and riding bikes around the neighborhood. Philip is an avid runner who has competed in four Philadelphia Triathlons. And just like Grant, he also has his black belt in karate. They all love the beach as much as Keira, and Avalon is their favorite Jersey shore vacation spot. Water skiing? Tubing? No problem! Claire’s parents live in the Poconos and they own a boat, so any type of water sport is right up their alley, too.

Along with staying physically active, the Kim Family places a lot of emphasis on blending their diverse backgrounds and teaching their children to value their roots. Claire’s family hails from Czechoslovakia, and Philip’s is from Korea. Two vastly different cultures, for sure, but each has beliefs and traditions well worth passing on and celebrating. Their children are taught to speak up for themselves because their voice matters (they get that from their mom). They’re also taught to always be respectful of their elders, as is expected in their Korean culture. “We are grateful to live in a country where we are able to mix and blend our cultures and celebrate our differences,” says Philip. The Kim Family really does have the perfect recipe for living life to the fullest: Add a little hard work, determination and mutual respect, then sprinkle in some family, fun, fitness and a little spinach. Mix it all together and Voila! Life is a lot more delicious — and fulfilling! Do you know a Newtown Square Resident or Family who should become known by our community? Long Live the Performing Arts! The performing arts — including music, drama and dance — are at everyone’s fingertips these days. It’s not just the work of performing arts professionals that consumes us. On TikTok, Instagram and YouTube, we watch anything from babies to grandparents and everyone in between as they move their bodies as well as they can to the beat of the music; they sing a famous tune; or act out a false scenario to trick a loved one. We watch them all, the great ones and the amateurs, as we get pulled into a world of feel-good emotions. We laugh and cry with them. That is the world of the performing arts. It includes everyone and excludes no one! What’s great about participating in the performing arts? In many sports, there’s a wait-your-turn approach: wait to bat, tumble or make the starting line-up. In the performing arts, everyone

performs together. Multiple disciplines of the arts can be combined into a singular compelling performance. Singers, dancers, and actors can all share the stage at the same time. We love to see a stage play or a movie musical. Expression through the performing arts has never been as powerful and easily accessible as it is today. Even during the pandemic, artists still find a way to practice and showcase their respective art forms. In Gia Kourlas’ New York Times article, “Best Dance of 2020,” she writes: “While there’s no denying that this is an incredibly difficult time for dance and dance artists, it’s also been a privilege to witness such imagination and resilience.” Performers do what performers have always done: Perform, regardless of a pandemic! The arts continue to create unity, friendships and a chance to step away from the pressure of regular life. Additionally, the arts also provide long-lasting effects of emotional well-being for participants and observers. Let’s be honest: We are all performers, even if it’s just in the mirror when no one else is watching. We have always relied on the performing arts to connect with each other. The earliest recorded writings of early humans on cave walls depict celebrations of dance. Past, present and future, we are no different! We sing happy birthday on a loved one’s special day. We do a little happy dance to celebrate something good. We all get up and dance at weddings. And we act out stories, trying to retell that funny thing that happened to us yesterday. The technology changes, styles evolve and the public taste shifts. What doesn’t change? All of it brings people joy. So let’s never ever stop! NS

The January Sproul Lanes Student of the Month is Billy Beggs, a Junior at Archbishop John Carroll High School! Billy received a Certificate of Achievement, and looks forward to enjoying his award: a “Pizza Bowl” party courtesy of Sproul Lanes, our Sponsor of this program. During his three years at Carroll, Billy has been a member of his school’s Community Service Corps (CSC), a service organization whose projects include food and clothing drives. This year, Billy helped package up Thanksgiving meals for several dozen local families. He and other CSC members helped wrap donated Christmas gifts and package Christmas dinners for those same families. Billy has also participated in Carroll’s annual PatrioTHON, an annual marathon dance event that raises funds to benefit Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP). He hopes it will be held again this spring not only because it’s fun but because funds raised help such a good cause. Another good cause Billy has supported is The Lustgarten Foundation’s pancreatic cancer research. In memory of his maternal grandmother who passed away in 2015 from that disease, Billy has participated in Lustgarten’s annual fundraiser walk. Billy also serves as a team member on his school’s soccer team (two years) and lacrosse teams (three years). His favorite sport is lacrosse because it’s so fast-paced and requires constant interaction with his teammates and the opponent’s team. Billy gives back to younger kids who also love lacrosse by volunteering at Native Lacrosse, a Marple area camp and club where he teaches and coaches kids in grades K-8 lacrosse rules and techniques. Billy says he plans on studying Aerospace Engineering in college, to prepare him for a career working for NASA. All your Friends & Neighbors in the Marple Newtown community congratulate you on this award and wish you well, Billy, in all your future endeavors!

Winter Comfort System
HEALTH TIPS
In addition to a healthy diet and regular exercise, your environment affects your health. Your HVAC system is a critical component of your home’s environment. Here are five ways to optimize it for better health. 1. CONTROL HUMIDITY During winter, low humidity causes more than cracked skin. Your dried nose and throat can make you susceptible to colds. Installing a humidifier will address this, but you need to ensure that you don’t over-humidify your home and end up in an environment that’s perfect for mold and pathogens to grow. Talk to a professional about the right humidity control for your home.

2. KEEP THE TEMPERATURE RIGHT In your attempts to save energy, lowering your home’s setpoint may seem like a viable option. Just be careful not to lower it too much. Conversely, keeping the temperature too high affects your health as well as your pocketbook. Your ideal temperature varies from daytime (with ongoing activity at home) to nighttime (lower temperatures improve sleep quality). A programmable thermostat will keep your temperature just right throughout the day and night. And a well-balanced air system will keep the temperature consistent throughout your home. 3. ADEQUATE VENTILATION Don’t underestimate the importance of replacing stale, moist indoor air with fresh air from outside. Exhausting moist bathroom and kitchen air will reduce humidity issues, not only in those areas but throughout your house. Introducing fresh air prevents the buildup of carbon dioxide and other gases, some of which can cause long-term health issues and are downright toxic. Installing an energy recovery ventilation system gives you the benefit of healthy, fresh air without the cost of higher energy consumption. 4. REMOVE ALLERGENS Ventilation is a first step in reducing the allergens in your home. The right filtration for your furnace is another way to further limit the growth and buildup of mites, dust and other allergens. An air purifier will take your air quality to the next level as you further remove pathogens and other invisible enemies to your health. 5. ELIMINATE DRAFTS As part of maintaining your home’s temperature, keeping it consistent throughout requires eliminating cold spots. This could involve upgrading your furnace to produce even more heat, sealing windows and doors or balancing air distribution. Consult a professional about the best option for your situation to keep your home’s heat exactly where it needs to be. NS

Can You Spot It From the Air? Hint: Driving in one direction enters Newtown Township. Another road quickly arrives in Marple Township. But drive the wrong way and you're no longer driving in either Marple Township or Newtown Township. Can you spot this intersection from the air?

New Year’s Resolutions for Bringing People Together In this first issue of Newtown Square Friends & Neighbors for this new year, my welcome letter on page 3 wishes everyone a Happier New Year in 2021. Owner Andrew Martella, Sr., had wanted to be an electrician since as far back as he can remember. His father Carmen started Carmen Martella Electrical service in 1955, and Andrew was tagging along on his jobs by the age of nine. By 8th grade, he knew he would eventually follow in his dad’s footsteps. When asked to write his future vision in his school’s yearbook that year, he wrote: “Become an electrical contractor with my dad.” Back in Philadelphia in 1955, Carmen Martella was one of the first electricians in his area with his name painted on his truck. Simply by advertising with his truck and word of mouth, Carmen grew a business that served South Philadelphia and Lower Merion. Living through the depression influenced Carmen’s strong work ethic, which he passed on to his son. “While some kids were playing at the park, I was making money helping my dad on electrical jobs,” said Andrew. “Electrical work was really in my blood. The family business was all I knew.” A Delaware County resident since 1961, Andrew graduated from Monsignor Bonner High School, where he enrolled in their electrical Vo-Tech program. During high school, he also took courses outside of school in blueprint reading and house wiring. He went on to earn a Science in Technology Bachelor’s Degree at Spring Garden College in Chestnut Hill. As an electrician, Andrew found the hands-on work very rewarding. “There’s a real satisfaction in solving electrical issues and making a customer feel happy and safe in their home.” In 1989, Andrew Sr. and his brother Richard went into a threeway partnership with their father, to form Martella Electric Company, in which they worked together for 17 years. Andrew and Richard eventually purchased the business from their dad. In 2015, Richard retired, so Andrew runs the business now. His team includes his son, Andrew Jr., who learned and mastered his electrical expertise by helping his dad while growing up. After he graduated from Penn College with a degree in Automotive Technologies in 2012, he joined his dad’s team of electricians. Andrew Sr.’s wife of 37 years, Susan, is also an integral part of the success of Martella Electric. “I wouldn’t be here without her knowledge and contributions to the company,” Andrew said, fondly.

The Martella Team also includes Administrative Assistant Kathy Strahan and five service technicians. “We’re always encouraging our team members to keep learning, and we offer on-going training in the latest technologies,” said Andrew. “I really enjoy watching my employees become better at their trade and be the best versions of themselves that they can be.” At Martella Electric, safety is a top priority. “Not only are we in the customer service business, we are in the safety business,” Andrew said. “We make sure our professionally trained technicians are drug-tested and background-checked before they join our team.” What sets Martella’s team apart from other companies are their values: Service, Integrity and Excellence. “Our customers and their homes are very important to us,” explained Andrew, “and so we always treat them with the utmost respect.” The team at Martella Electric supports the local community through several organizations. For more than 10 years, they’ve been helping a family through the Vincent DePaul Society, by
providing them with Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners. And last month, the Martella team delivered and installed a new stove for that family. They also donate to the Providence Animal Shelter, and often run promotions where a percentage of invoices goes toward that shelter. A former Boy Scout, Andrew Sr. is also proud to support the Boy Scouts of America through the Wood Badge Program that trains adults. “My brothers and I and my son were all Boy Scouts, so I really enjoy giving back to them,” said Andrew. Whether you’re having an electrical emergency or are looking to make electrical upgrades and improvements to your home, these Marple Newtown-area electricians are truly concerned with your safety and comfort. Martella Electric (www. MartellaElectric.com) always listens to their customers’ unique needs to solve electrical issues, and are dedicated to providing 100% satisfaction. Our Community
Imagine a Community
Without Frantic Families By Patrick Lencioni Founder and President, The Table Group
Parents are the CEOs of their families, and families are more important than companies. Yes, I am confident that both of those statements are true. And so, it stands to reason that parents should go about planning and organizing their home life with at least as much strategic clarity as a CEO runs his or her business. Unfortunately, most of them don’t. I certainly didn’t. And the cost of this is greater than we know, for our families, our children, our marriages, and even our communities. Fortunately, it doesn’t have to be that way. Imagine you, your family, and your community, being calmer, more intentional and more peaceful. Imagine not having to worry about whether your son makes the travel squad of the underwater lacrosse team, or whether your daughter takes advanced placement

astrophysics during her junior year of high school, or whether you should have bought that lake house while interest rates were low like your neighbors did. Theodore Roosevelt once said that “comparison is the thief of joy,” and it is so easy for parents and families to lose their joy when they are tempted to compare their lives to the people next door, down the street or in the next pew over at church. The key to avoiding this is to get clear—really clear—about who you are and what matters most to you, and then making decisions with confidence, knowing that you’re living true to yourselves regardless of what others are doing. That is the purpose of my book, The Three Big Questions for a Frantic Family.

I discovered the model for the book years ago. By day I was, and still am, a consultant to CEOs. By night I’m a husband and father. One evening I came home, and innocuously said to Laura, my wife: “If my clients ran their companies the way we run this family, they’d go out of business.” Feeling like I was criticizing her, Laura objected, and I reminded her that it was as much my fault as hers. In fact, I was more at fault because I spent my days helping others create clarity and strategy, and I did virtually nothing in that area at home. So I adapted the work I did for corporations for families and came up with The Three Big Questions.

24-HOUR STORM RESPONSE
What this entails is actually simple. In just an hour over dinner, parents can have a discussion that provides a basic but critical level of family clarity. By asking and discussing a few key questions, they can identify the values that guide the behavior of the family, the basic principles that create the strategy for the family, and the single greatest priority for the family over the next few months. By carving out just 15 minutes each week, they can review those things and make whatever decisions and adjustments are necessary to keep things smooth and on track. The book provides real-life examples from different kinds of families, from those with young kids to empty-nesters. It’s a fictional story about a husband and wife who discover the model, but the most important thing about the book is this: it really works. A New Year… A NEW YOU! If you’d like to feel and look better in 2021, here’s some advice to accomplish that! Affirmations Practice affirmations every day as part of your routine. Typical affirmations include I am strong, I am blessed, I am beautiful. You can do these as part of your meditation and breathing exercises, on a treadmill or bike. You can also find programs to follow on the Internet. Search “I AM” Affirmations. They can help you build your confidence and also change your life. These really work! Accountability It is always easier to have someone who will hold you accountable like a partner, friend or coach. Sharing your exercise and diet routines only makes it easier to accomplish your goals. Progress It is important to track your progress, whether your goal is weight loss/weight gain or building muscle/trimming down. Log your daily routine and track your progress. You will be amazed when you look back on where you were a year ago or longer. Consistency In order to be successful, the best way is to establish a routine and stick to it. You will find that once you get started with your routine, it is easy to be consistent. Reflection Be honest with yourself. Do not dwell on the past or beat yourself up if you have not met your target goals for both diet and exercise.
$0
Goals Set fitness goals that are manageable and attainable. Setting unrealistic goals will only lead to failure. Likewise, setting goals too low will lead to boredom and lack of results. Routine Establish a routine and stick to it. Most people fail because they give up. It takes less than 10 seconds to get distracted and pass on your routine and do something else. Breathe You should develop a habit of breathing exercises and/or meditation throughout the day. For logistics and consistency, it is especially helpful to do these types of exercises first thing in the morning and just before you go to bed. Sit or lie in a comfortable quiet place and breathe in through your nose and breathe out through your mouth. Sleep Generally speaking, most people need to get 8 hours of sleep. Go to bed at the same time and wake up at the same time every day. Just like eating, the amount of needed sleep varies from person to person. So, adjust your sleeping habits to fit your routine. Eat Right Forget the fad or trending diets. Simply follow the food pyramid eating the proper balance of Fat, Carbs and Protein. Select organic natural non-processed food whenever possible. What works for someone else may not work for you. You must balance your intake of the number of calories you need vs. the number of calories you burn. NS

Humidity’s Effect on Air Control Maintaining great air quality in your home is possible in ever y season if you keep in mind two key strategies: simple home maintenance and a waterproofed basement. A recent TV report stated that Americans spend at least 90% of their time indoors. Yet, indoor air quality is typically 3 to 4 times more polluted than outdoor air, due to insufficient ventilation and excessive moisture content throughout the house. Two areas in your home that absolutely require ventilation are the attic and the basement (or crawlspace). Other recommended areas are the kitchen and bathroom, by using exhaust fans. If your kitchen and bathroom have windows, open and close them as often as possible (something homeowners seem to rarely do these days). Maintaining moderate moisture levels in your home is primarily accomplished by rainwater and melted snow and ice running off your roof and down the rain gutters and siding. We have three seasons for humidity control: 4 months of the heating season (Nov, Dec, Jan, Feb); 4 months cooling season (May, Jun, Jul, Aug); and 4 months venting season (Mar, Apr, Sep, Oct), when little heat or A/C is used. During heating season, the best way to maintain comfortable relative humidity is Passive Moisture Generation through showers, dishes, laundry, houseplants, etc. Setting a central heating system’s mechanical humidifier above +25% ambient can cause excessive condensation (dew drops) in pre-1970s empty side walls and under-insulated attics. To control humidity in the spring and fall venting months, keep windows open, and ensure your rain gutters aren’t clogged. Portable basement dehumidifiers are ineffective, according to the manufacturer, unless the exterior temperature is above 65° and the unit is set in the center of the room. Moisture is only an issue at above 60% relative. Dehumidifiers set lower than 50% use excessive energy and may run continuously, causing heat build up or even a fire. Most basement air ducts are not foil-taped and mastic-sealed. This causes, on average, 20% to 35% of the duct air to leak into the basement. During the heating and A/C seasons, this actually helps control humidity.
Foundation leaks that cause a wet basement make the humidity go off the scale in any season. French drains and sump pumps only work when they are mud-free and flowing. So what’s the best way to have great air quality? By keeping basements dry and vented, using kitchen and bathroom fans, and fully functioning rain gutters. Hey! Grandma was right when she insisted on emptying kitchen trash before sleep-time and getting a fresh start every day by pulling open the drapes and cracking open the windows! NS

History Spotlight
The Business Block in Old Newtown Square by Doug Humes Downtown Newtown Square was originally the Goshen Road corner where the Square Tavern was built. Through the 18th century, several other businesses grew up nearby, but that all changed in 1789 when Delaware County was created from the eastern townships of Chester County. We got to keep the county seat, the city of Chester. Chester County had to select a new county seat – and chose Turks Head, but changed its name from the tavern of that name to something more formal: West Chester. And the new road that was laid out from Newtown Square to that new county seat was named the West Chester turnpike. The new road, when completed, drew all of the traffic off the old east-west road (Goshen Road). Robert Mendenhall saw an opportunity, and in 1788, built a hotel and general store at the corner of the West Chester Pike and the old Chester Road (now Rte 252). A later owner renamed it Beaumont’s Tavern, and years later, it was known as simply the Newtown Square Hotel. In 1903, the ancient hotel building was replaced with a new hotel, but the bar area was maintained through construction, after which it was relocated to the new hotel. In 1909, Edward Summeril built a two-bay brick building in between the hotel and the Lewis Brothers general store, and it housed the barber shop and Summeril’s meat and grocery store. The children flocked there for its penny candy. The 1920 photo shows the business block at the time: the hotel with its porch and 2nd-floor patio; the Summeril store with its barber’s pole to

Keeping Your Vehicles READY TO ROLL Every year has its ups and downs, but 2020 is in a league of its own. Every January brings a feeling of closure and a fresh new start, an expectation that, with some effort on our part (aka keeping our New Year’s Resolutions), life as we know it will get better. The challenges and lifestyle changes we all endured in 2020 have increased our usual hope that 2021 will be a much easier, healthier and happier year for all. Before 2020, the daily routine was to wake up, drive to work, then drive to shopping or to dine out or to a movie. In 2020, that routine did a 180: For many people, working from home is their new normal; food is delivered instead of dining in
restaurants; and movie theaters are closed due to social distancing concerns. Life is so different! And now, cold winter weather is often a good excuse for not getting outside to stretch our legs and get some exercise. Just as people need to “keep the juices flowing,” the same goes for your vehicles. As personal schedules have changed, vehicle service duties and service schedules have also changed. If a vehicle sits for an extended period of time, it will fall out of good running shape. Its joints get stiff, rust builds up, lubricants settle and leave critical components unprotected, batteries may discharge and tires may deflate. Here are some suggestions for keeping your vehicles ready to roll:
Trus te
d Experts in Auto Repa
1. Go for a drive once a week. Just starting the engine and letting it idle for 15 minutes is not enough. To keep tires from drying and cracking, they need to roll and flex. The battery needs to recharge. And the fluids need to reach the proper temperature to coat and protect those important mechanical components. A weekly drive will help ensure a vehicle will be ready when you need it.

2. If a weekly drive isn’t feasible, consider installing a trickle charger or a solar charger to keep the battery up to snuff because starting it is most important. Then, head straight on over to your local service center for a tire pressure and fluid levels check. 3. The synthetic oils being used more often in newer engines have lengthened the traditional time interval between recommended oil changes. A stay-at-home lifestyle can extend that time even further. For maximum engine protection, change the oil about once a year, with your safety inspection. Filters can be visibly checked more frequently. Most other maintenance items can wait for their respective intervals. 4. One last winter-driving tip: Always turn the windshield wipers off before turning off the engine. Forgetting to turn things off in this order can cause a big problem the next time you go to start the engine: If the wipers try to start while they’re frozen on the windshield, that can break your wiper transmission. Newtown Square Sports by Bob Blaisse Publisher
Should We Develop a Sports Section? In the November 2020 edition of Newtown Square Friends & Neighbors, I shared how proud I am of our publishing company, Best Version Media (BVM). I’m proud not only because BVM publishes hundreds of hometown magazines like our own, but also because BVM has just recently launched an incredible sports destination website for sports fandom: BVMSports.com. With big intentions to democratize sports information from the local level up, Pee Wee to Pro, all within one website for fans of professional sports, college team sports and even local high school sports — all different sports — BVM Sports will even serve the local level: kids team sports managed by proud parents of Little Leaguers, Pop Warner football players, karate kids, lacrosse and soccer players and kids who like to fish or like to swim like a fish. BVMSports.com has launched with local citizen journalists all over the U.S. getting involved by uploading their written sports features about local players and local sports organizations and activities of all kinds, including the activities of senior citizens who continue to break barriers in their retirement.
With the benefit of our BVM Sports website now supporting us, Newtown Square Friends & Neighbors is considering adding a few pages of local sports features to our pages every month. How cool would that be to see local team sports photos and features from writers within our hometown community? If you like sports, or just like to write about sports or sports activities, or if you would just like your daughter or son’s accomplishments or their sports teams to get promoted as they should online, consider becoming a citizen journalist yourself. To submit your written features and photos or videos you’ve taken, go online to BVMSports.com or submit through the BVM Sports app, which covers Pee Wee to Pro sports for hometowns like ours. Visit BVMSports.com or visit your phone’s app store to download the free BVM Sports app today, and get ready to play citizen journalist for our local Newtown Square community. NS

Keep Your Home Warmer This Winter with Carpet It’s cold outside! Not surprising: It’s January! As we strive to keep our homes warm and our energy bills low, carpeting is a great way to achieve those goals! It’s not a myth that carpeting in your home can retain heat lost by hardwood flooring. In fact, well-fitting and well-made carpets can contribute to retaining heat in a room, which is one way to save on heating costs over the winter months. So how do carpets and area rugs keep your floor warm? Rugs provide warmth because they act as insulation between the floor and your feet. They keep the surface from losing heat at a rapid rate.
Marple Newtown’s Carpeting & Floor Covering Expert
Something that can make a difference in warmth is the carpet’s stitch count (aka needle count). The higher the stitch count, the denser the rug and the more insulation it offers. A thick rug with a low stitch count won’t block out the cold as well as one with a high stitch count. So, when looking for a rug to keep your room warm, look for one that’s thick with a high stitch count. A rug’s material will also affect its ability to provide insulation against the cold. Wool, well known for its warmth, is one of the best insulators and is also soft on your feet. Because wool rugs can be expensive, consider acrylic or nylon rugs, which also provide insulation but are more affordable. To achieve maximum warmth in a room, size matters. A rug that covers almost the entire floor surface or wall-to-wall carpeting keeps the room warmer. But if one large rug isn’t practical, coordinating matching rugs will do the trick. In addition to adding color and style, area rugs can also keep your room cozy.

The carpet pad underneath your rug also influences the quality of your carpet and can add insulation to your carpet or area rug. Look for dense carpet padding, which is usually listed as the weight of one cubic foot of carpet padding. The greater the number, the more dense the padding. Residential carpeting is typically between 5 and 8 pounds per cubic foot. Thickness is also important because the thicker the pad, the better it is at insulating. Always check with the manufacturer or your flooring expert to make sure you’re purchasing the right padding for your particular carpeting. As the winter months have us spending more time indoors, don’t forget these “winter coats” for your floors. By using carpeting and the right padding, you’ll be able to save money on heating and keep your feet warm. Talk with your flooring professional, to determine the right combination of carpet and padding to warm up your home. NS

Flu season is on the horizon! Are you ready? My readiness routine includes getting a flu shot and freezing some easy-to-prepare dinners. I also buy and freeze chicken parts to make chicken soup later. When you’re sick or you feel like you’re “coming down with something,” the last thing you want is to brave bad weather to go grocery shopping! Chicken soup is uncommonly easy to make. Remove the skin from a couple of packages of chicken necks and backs. These parts have lots of bones, necessary to make a broth that “gels” when it’s cold (which signals high-protein content). Chop up a carrot, onion, some garlic, and celery (including leaves). Because you’re going to throw away the bones, meat and vegetables, you don’t need to peel the carrot or onion. Place it all in a pot with the chicken parts. Cover with water, adding about a quart for each pound of chicken. Add salt and pepper, then simmer for up to an hour. Strain the broth, let it settle and skim the fat. If you’re making a big batch, you can freeze some. As your kids recover from being sick, you’ll want to take it easy on their diet. Our pediatrician provided a four-day diet to give the kids’ insides a rest. My daughter gave her children something called the BRAT diet: banana-rice-applesauce-toast.
The following diet was for an intestinal flu that was going around during the 1979-80 winter. I’ve used it for intestinal flu recovery ever since. Check with your child’s pediatrician for recommendations on treating your child with diet or OTC medications.

Gas Log Fireplaces Offer Comfort and Convenience What’s better than a roaring fire on a cold, wintry night? A roaring fire that needs no tending, requires minimal cleanup and turns on with the flip of a switch, that’s what! When you have a gas fireplace, you can snuggle up for the evening without worrying about kindling or needing to add wood to maintain a consistent level of heat. So go ahead, grab your hot chocolate, a good book and settle in. Originally, gas fireplaces were invented as an alternative to wood-burning fireplaces, not to replace them. Over the years, however, they have grown in popularity because they’re so convenient, efficient, versatile and clean. Unlike wood-burning fireplaces, they don’t give off smoke, require an annual chimney cleaning or leave ashes behind. Sure, a gas fireplace can’t mimic the natural crackling and popping you hear with a wood-burning fireplace, but there is no argument that a gas fireplace is a safer, cleaner and easier way to enjoy a cozy fire. Long gone are the days of splitting, stacking, seasoning and hauling wood. Imagine not having to take the time to kindle the wood, wait for it to catch fire and clean it all up afterwards. Sounds nice, doesn’t it? The truth is that most of us don’t have
the time or interest to put in that level of work, which is why so many wood-burning fireplaces rarely or never get used. When it comes to choosing a gas fireplace, the options are limitless and can be installed just about anywhere in your home. Gas fireplaces come in three types: 1. Inserts for folks who want to retrofit a wood-burning firebox with something more convenient and efficient; 2. Built-ins for those who want a fireplace where there isn’t one now; and 3. Log sets, which are basic burners that sit in existing open fireplaces. Both inserts and built-in fireplaces are reliable heat producers, filling your room with a mix of warm air and radiant heat. Log sets are usually more for looks than warmth. No matter what type of gas fireplace is best for your needs, you’ll also be able to choose from many styles to match decor and your budget. Modern versions burn much more realistically, with glowing red embers and tall orange-yellow flames that dance and flicker around ceramic logs molded from the real thing. Don’t be surprised if your guests mistake it for a wood-burning fireplace! And the best part? When you’re ready to turn in for the night, all you have to do is push a button and the fire instantly extinguishes. Sweet Dreams! NS

Practicing Proper Posture:
Tips on Reducing the Aches and Pains These days, as our kitchen counters double as classroom desks and spare bedrooms become makeshift offices, the importance of setting ourselves up for success is paramount. But let’s be real here: Kids are zooming from under the covers, and that comfy couch is a tempting reprieve from the dining room chair. After only a few weeks of sitting in the wrong position, you can start feeling aches in your back and neck. The aches are warning you about potential long-term problems. Good posture means that the key parts of your neck and spine are correctly aligned and supported by the right amount of muscle tension. Here are 4 ways you can maintain good posture to keep your back and neck feeling happy and healthy.
Check Your Chair A quality chair is key. Get one that’s easily adjustable so you can change the height, back position and tilt. Reduce your risk of back pain by adjusting the chair so your lower back is properly supported. Your knees should be the same height or slightly lower than your hips, and your feet should be flat on the floor. Adjust your chair height so you can use your keyboard with your wrists and forearms straight and level with the floor.

Screen Placement Matters Yes, where you place your screen has a lot to do with your posture! Your screen should be directly in front of you, about an arm's length away, with the top of the screen roughly at eye level. If the screen is too high or too low, you’re bending your neck. That’s not only uncomfortable, it can cause long-term damage. Invest in a monitor stand if needed or get creative and make one yourself. Your Phone Is a Pain in Your Neck! Did you know that the average smartphone user spends two to four hours a day staring at their device? Looking at your phone for extended periods puts a great deal of strain on your neck, shoulders and back. If you spend a lot of time talking, try exchanging your handset for a headset. If you’re texting too much, your neck and shoulders will pay the price. To avoid what is commonly referred to as “text neck,” hold your phone at eye level and sit up straight with your shoulders back. Get Moving Because we’re no longer walking down hallways to conference rooms or running to our next class, it’s important that we get up and move regularly. Change your position and location as often as is practicable. Frequent short breaks are better for your back than fewer long breaks because they give some muscles a chance to relax while others take the strain. These small changes require little investment but have the potential to greatly improve not just your health but also your well-being and productivity. NS
